i bought a garage door sensor not knowing it was zigbee related. what do I need to get to get that sensor online?

A Zigbee coordinator

#

And a Zigbee software stack

glacial knot
#

discord is such a dumb application
cannot be arsed to actually hide people you ignore
but cannot be arsed to keep some record that something was deleted to avoid confusion

clear ferry
#

Also, a single battery operated device is a poor usecase for Zigbee

#

You want lots of devices

#

And a huge mesh

weary bone
#

Well, one has to start somewhere, right?

clear ferry
#

Yes, but unless you are right next to it, your experience will be horrid probably

weary bone
#

I can't quite buy up a bunch of sensors right now, but I've recognized that I'm avoiding zigbee products because I don't have that hub/coordinator set up.

primal laurel
#

buy 1 zigbee device, buy 10. This is how it starts

clear ferry
#

You want a big mesh, with multiple mains powered devices

weary bone

weary bone
#

oh wow... I didn't realize this, but I purchased it in nov 2024. I don't know if I can return it now.

forest edge
#

either way, unless you are planning to invest more into additional zigbee sensors.. buying and dealing with a zigbee coordinator for a single device is costly and impractical

#

compared to just eating the 10 bucks or so you spent and spending another 10 bucks for a wifi sensor

primal laurel
weary bone
#

ok. Well since it seems like I am unworthy of entry into the world of zigbee ( ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), then what brands should I drift towards, or away from, for a wifi contact sensor.

forest edge
#

they are saying you don't actually learn much from just watching a video

forest edge
primal laurel
forest edge
#

not everyone is the same

primal laurel
weary bone
#

lol. sorry. I just don't have a grid for this stuff to land on at the moment.

glacial knot
#

you don't need to get a ton of devices to use it
but it works best when you do

primal laurel
#

zigbee uses a mesh topology. So instead of wifi, which is peer to peer, zigbee hops messages between devices to get it to the coordinator. Depending on how far your coordinator is you might need a few switches or light bulbs in between to make the hops possible. But you wont really know until you set it up. Most people who are into zigbee start with a few light bulbs and then you start with a decent network

weary bone
#

so it's kinda like that/

#

?

forest edge
#

cause you can buy lora versions of these sensors lol

weary bone
forest edge
#

you mean you have a system and just did not intergrate it?

weary bone
#

No, I have two radios (think amateur radio stuff, but texting) that use LoRa to run a software called Meshtastic, but I don't have any lora home assistant/smart home devices.

forest edge
#

oh

#

well yes zigbee is kind of like that providing they pass on data between devices back to a single source

weary bone
#

ok. I understand that setup then

forest edge
#

but again, if you plan to ONLY ever have 1 zigbee device, it is not cost effective to keep it and try and make it work ||unless you don't care about money and want to tinker||

@forest edge Man, those LR4 load cells are vexing. I swapped out the whole harness and no matter what I did to recalibrate the system, it wouldn't register over 9.9lbs. I then tried putting the old harness back in the old unit and swapped out the foot that wasn't moving freely and it could still get stuck pretty easily. Then I swapped out the plastic bracket that holds the foot in place and now it seems to be working properly. So I guess they changed the load cells in the 3 years since I bought my original LR4 and they're no longer compatible with my older unit. In the end, swapping out the plastic bracket will be better because it will be less obvious that I'm swapping parts between units...

forest edge
#

the LR3 was the same way. I actually own 3 of 4 different tray IR sensor things and each of them was diffrent in how they looked and how they clipped on

static schooner
#

Yeah, those were prone to failure and they kept redesigning them

#

forest edge

but for soem reasons it doesnt work, i exposed it to alexa but when i say the name of it, nothing happens

okok sorry

anyway i got it, i understood why it wasnt working

its just that alexa is kinda bad person

a script will be recognized as a scene in alexa app, and to use scenses in alexa u have to say "alexa, turn on" and then u say the name of the scene

and i was just trying to say "alexa," turn off pc which also would be the name of the scene.
so in this case to work it would have been: "alexa, turn on turn off pc."

Hello - I've got a side project where I have a pico2w - amongst other things I want to be able to have it communicate with HA, issue commands/trigger automations, and read some values on it to display on an connected screen - a bit like a remote control/remote display in the home (it will essentially be an LED clock and show some info/graphs and maybe trigger some lighting scenes or temperature changes on devices and security settings - (home/away mode via arlo hass etc) without using an app or tablet... is this a sensible idea of a project and if so... am I best using REST or some other method to communicate with HA... also happy to hear if this sounds like a waste of time and im missing something fundamental about what i want to do... the pico is running micropython so most of the codebase will end up in that.

For excel? a n100 sounds wrong.
You are going to pay more for a office license than the hardware it runs on

I mean I need to buy like 8 minipcs

#

Because I have cave age pcs and people is asking me for a change

a high-availability excel cluster

light trout

The lenovo mini PCs looks great

solar zealot
#

well if you can buy something with a ryzen cpu from minisforum

#

they apply somewhat largeish mobile coolers to them so they go a lot

#

their HX line is good, their UM line is good

#

if you need even more than that they have an ms-01 available with great io

#

and the latest is even a tower solution and mainboards to tho that is a bit of a stretch purchase for something of a minipc replacement

itunes, he should have gotten a mac mini to not have to deal with that anymore ^^

tired quarry

itunes still exists?

solar zealot

TBH the 16GB probably makes a big difference. A freshly booted Win11 machine seems to have used about 6.5GB

solar zealot
#

you can abuse it heavily as a database and if you scripted the shit out of it you have access :^)

I would love to use tape at home for historical storage, but the price of that system is a little steep ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

dawn badge
solar zealot

used tape drives starting at the price of a used car

pearl lagoon
#

Ha yeah

dawn badge
#

previous system was a i3-2100+8gb ram. so it was an upgrade

pearl lagoon
#

Overall though, hitting up the used market for enterprise equipment is the bomb.

I probably have 10k worth of parts in my home server atm. But I only paid about 1k for it all

#

not including my unifi stuff

solar zealot
#

unless you end up buying a decade old gear

#

then its pretty much ewaste performance for 300w idle ;D

#

lots of rawwrrr out of the fans for little math

pearl lagoon
#

I have some stuff that is older, but it is PDUs and a surge protector

I did get a usb hub that can mirror multiple devices for pretty cheap, and that is newer

#

it is a ThunderSync3-16 - I got it for about 250

#

The main thing though - always buy your racks used... holy cow the price difference

I haven't used an office desktop app in almost 7 years now

solar zealot

clear ferry

Haven't missed anything in the web tbh

And I have 146000 unread emails

solar zealot

reminded of the time someone pushed a bad cron config out to all of production, so everyone on ops was getting an e-mail from all 10k servers every 5 min

solar zealot
#

why did you even bother to delete 706

#

or was that the point where you just gave up

clear ferry
#

They are auto deleted

#

Aka meeting invites

#

When you accept/decline one it deletes the invite

desert cave
#

yah, I think that's the same on google hosted stuff, too

Rant no help needed, sending message to incoming caller like im already on a call with out a conformation and sending a sms always with conformation kinda colide with AI logic.

finally made the system it does not need a phone number but uses the given asterisk channel. now i regression test my sms system and it sends with out conformation.

solar zealot
#

i have no idea what this is about

crisp oriole
#

if someone calls me on my voip. (multi trunk) i now can say send message to (caller) and my phone assistant takes over the call sends the message and then relays to the main unavailable menu

#

its multi trunk so i can be on the phone already. and i dont have multple phones around everywhere in my house.

solar zealot
#

do you get that many calls? :D

I feel like this is some weird quest to make use of 90s tech
