unborn merlin
unborn merlin
#

and haven't pulled a google yet either with "lol old ones not gonna work now eat shit buy new ones."

#

tho i'm also working on a board set for someones house to.. plug into their air handler and then remotely use sensors via HA to do thermostats/multizone heating/cooling control because.. the nests they have in their house can't use the nest remote sensors (because fuck you I suppose?) and thus.. act odd πŸ˜„

#

... oh and because they only have 5 wires at the thermostats and 2 of those are blind-spliced in the walls (because fuck you too from the hvac folks?) so can't use them properly to control even semi-complicated systems..

scenic radish

alright yeah, thingino is super cool

Or fuck knows maybe not even pros considering how shady some stuff with houses can be these days

dawn badge
unborn merlin
#

hey look a heat pump control line.

Why is it sliced open and spliced? Who knows fuckoff. πŸ™ƒ

#

that is just one of the many splices in that abomination

#

and here's a before-and-after of an air handler after I had to rewire to support a heat pump..

#

Gasp.

I fucking labelled things.

#

(and wrote on the panel outside what each wire's colors are...)

#

very much feels like the "pros" that put this thing together have a fucking decoder ring somewhere to figure out what sort of abomination they setup

forest edge
#

especially if the house is older than 40 years

unborn merlin
#

rc and w1

#

because having all the wires be in the single con-- oh right its not a single control wire at the thermostat either those are just bare wires (and reusing the same color of course) inside the wall.

#

and no excuse; because the basement where all this stuff was run was much newer to have been finished so.. πŸ˜„

#

all of the thermostats seem to be (for some unholy fucking reason)

#

bare wire conductors (bare as in not a thermostat control wire with 5/7 whatever conductors inside)

forest edge
#

you gotta remember hvacs started with just 2 wire then climbed 1+ wire over the years

unborn merlin
#

that are then.. spliced somewhere into a regular 5/7 control wire

forest edge
#

that one that looks bare is questionable tho

unborn merlin
#

thats not the only one that was bare.

#

one was thankfully fully accessible from in the basement so I ripped that bullshit out and replaced it with some cat6..

#

(yes I know technically not the spec of gauge it wants but it works fine its a smart thermostat..)

forest edge
#

lol cat6?

#

that was a waste

unborn merlin
#

Shrug it was what I had

#

and I was annoyed finding that bullshit

#

they also used.. 5/7 conductor wire for places where 2 conductor was called for

#

(like between air handler and boiler 'heat call' signal)

#

its just like.. what the fuck were they smoking?

forest edge
#

as systems get replaced in a home the installers have to sometimes pull of "tricks" to get more modern systems to work with older wiring

unborn merlin
#

it wasn't tricks. it was just moronic use of wires.

forest edge
#

well tricks as in jumping wires etc

#

the hvac systems try and be backward compatiable so you can do things like that

unborn merlin
#

in this hellhole country..

I hear over in the EU they have like.. modbus and shit.. I think.. πŸ€”

#

must be nice...

#

(these air handlers are from 2013.. they arent that old.)

forest edge
#

yea well they went from logs and fire to something that pumps out conditioned air over a short time frame

#

we didn't have that luxury

unborn merlin
#

boomer.

2013 is not new it uses R410a

glacial knot
unborn merlin
#

its somehow cheaper for me to develop an esp32 based smart control interface to throw in the handlers rather than replace the nests. πŸ˜›

#

because there' like 5 or 6 thermostats.

#

plus some minisplits in some places too.

forest edge
#

you have controled ducts?

unborn merlin
#

not yet.. there's a 3d printed smart-duct project prepping to do as well some

forest edge
#

then why do you have 5-6 thermostats?>

unborn merlin
#

not my house

#

someone I workl for πŸ˜„

#

and its a big fucking house.. that's why

#

... at least the boiler area is nice to work in.

I can just stand at full height in it.

forest edge
#

so is what you posted your shit or thiers?

unborn merlin
#

theirs.

#

which I deal with..

#

πŸ™ƒ

forest edge
#

well if it's a big house the splices make even more sense lol

unborn merlin
#

no. it really doesn't...

#

you run a single 7-conductor wire from the thermostat to the handler

#

then the handler can talk to the boiler over whatever other wire it wants

forest edge
#

rerunning lines for 5-6 thermostats through walls..

unborn merlin
#

because they're on opposite sides of the house

forest edge
#

just how much you think these people make?

#

mot of the time those lines are stapled or simply unreplacable

unborn merlin
#

no, they didn't staple the lines either.

#

the only way any of the wires are constrained

#

is with fucking gorilla tape here and there.

#

me? cable stapler go brr.

forest edge
#

gorilla tape? you saying the lines that were spliced into was new enough they used tape?

unborn merlin
#

no; but a lot of pissant wire nuts and also splices that were covered with electrical tape too

#

I've been ripping it out as I can when I can to replace with single goddamn wires that go where they are labelled.

forest edge
#

welcome to installers lol

unborn merlin
#

yeah; I have their fucking names ebcause they put stickers on the handlers.

#

no excuse.

forest edge
#

they probably don't even work for whatever company anymore

unborn merlin
#

I argue that this coding saying should apply to all trades.

#

Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live.

forest edge
#

yea that won't ever happen

unborn merlin
#

also.. some air handlers..

#

have contactors.. for no reason

forest edge

thi country takes pride in laziness

unborn merlin

Yeah, it can bullshit on way more topics than just that.

primal laurel

I can come up with lots of things but that was not the point. I just wanted to emphasize that the 'vision' part of a multi-modal LLM like GPT is the same thing people build vision models with

Here's a thought

#

Don't park in the bike lane

forest edge
#

thats funny cause that car wasn't parked

#

it had it's turn signal on pulling out from infront of a house lol

scenic radish
#

And look before turning

forest edge
#

i especially liked the part where he thought he had some entitlement coming into an intersection that already had stopped vehicles in it

#

not sure what the "barrier" he was referring to but boy I could see something that would damage a car that had to get into an empty bike lane really infuriating people lol

#

glad that "fad" was kind of short lived here

static schooner
#

honking, cursing, going around

#

if you're blocking lanes of traffic, you're the bad guy

scenic radish
#

Exactly lol

forest edge
#

parking is kind of an exception

#

what else would you expect? the vehicle to just rush plow in?

#

lol

static schooner
#

they just started enforcing a law where you can't park within x ft of an intersection to avoid exactly that nonsense

#

in part

forest edge
#

so that would solve the issue

static schooner
#

regardless, sticking your ass into lanes of traffic is gonna get you in trouble

scenic radish
forest edge
#

well if someone had hit them, it would be the person who hit them that would get the citation

#

common sense plays it's role

static schooner
#

nobody hit anyone there, but he shouldn't have been there

forest edge
#

again, parking is it's own expection. IF there was a parking spot there

static schooner
#

it's like somebody double-parked

forest edge
#

thats like saying someone shouldn't stop if a kid ran out infront of them

#

because thier ass was in an intersection

static schooner
#

pretty much all traffic laws imply "if safe to do so"

forest edge
#

well here to my knowledge that person parking was within their right

#

impatience isn't a right to those behind them

HiLink 2450 i think. can't track sleeping or sitting humans if they are still

I'm not the kinda nerd to be doing sweeping lighting that follows the person down the stairs or anything so I don't know what value it has to me anymore

wheat rover
#

I was gonna use it to tell me when my child gets out of bed at night and even when I set it at the right height to not get tripped by the very short dog it loses track of her when she's asleep so if someone comes to check on her it'll just fire off the automation because you can't use the logic "IF TARGETS IN BED =0 and TARGETS IN ZONE 2 > 0" anymore

#

so you'd have to get something like the 2410, but then you lose the function of zones

which just means there's a better solution that's not based on mmwave

it's the wrong use case for it, obviously. I've moved on.

Thanks for your support but sorry to hear about the trouble. We have dedicated support to help if you would like to jump to our Discord (dsc.gg/apolloautomation) or email us at support@apolloautomation.com

The LD2450 is known to struggle with still detection. Our MSR-2 uses the LD2410B which is better suited for still/static detection. We added 3 distance based zones that are user configurable which should help alert you if your child gets out of bed.

We also have mmWave tuning videos on our Wiki. https://wiki.apolloautomation.com/products/general/calibrating-and-updating/mmwave-videos/?h=tuni

We hope this helps and don't hesitate to reach out to support. We will make it right. Thanks again!

our alarms use 4 wires. our normal L/N/E then the Interconnect line. during an alarm the battery is used to put 9v onto that line with reference to neutral. i dont want to reference anything custom to AC if I can help it

Ideal design would be a decora plate model with mmwave on the plate and a shelly like module with esp going behind the switch/receptacle. Just my 2c

forest edge
#

thats what they are releasing

#

for the wall

#

the pictures even show a flat plate cover

tidal bronze
#

For existing switches?

forest edge
#

well didn't zooz make a switch with mmwave built in it?

#

think that's the only one I ever seen

tidal bronze
#

No idea. I did all my diy ones ages ago. If they did it. Perfect!

tidal bronze
#

Excellent!

forest edge
#

you are so slow to the punch lol

tidal bronze
#

Hmm running 28 mmwave sensors for few years. I might be slow.

forest edge
#

28

#

wtf

#

"The target has moved 0.3mm to the east, 0.5 to the west.."

tidal bronze
#

Lmao. Something like that.

forest edge
#

if the house detects no movement at all does it auto dial 911? lol

It's not bad for a quality switch + mmWave

I got like 20 lutron caseta dimmers for $30 new on ebay

Each

static schooner
#

Ok

#

Do they have built in mmWave?

forest edge
#

they already make sealed smoke detectors where the battery lasts as long as they are good for

umbral cliff
# forest edge thats silly

its what I prefer
I'm not retrofitting wired smoke alarms, but I'm not going to replace a wired one with battery

forest edge
#

aren't the wired ones more expensive now?

#

and it's not like you can't wouldn't put a battery only in the same location

That's for an in-vehicle dash? It's awfully... busy...

Minimalistic and touch-free should be the goals for anything you're going to use while driving.

Sigh, i posted my AI linux analyser on a linux discord. Whole server attacked me for using AI.

#

Just because i said AI is refreshing because now we must adapt as humans where humanity was under pressure for years before ai. In terms of art and stuff.

''AI linux analyser" wow you got balls πŸ˜‚

AI linux analyser? probsS

What does it do that a non-LLM tool can't? I have the feeling that's why you're being ridiculed. Linux users are power users. They already have one-line snippets that can do magic. They don't need a fucking AI.

deft pewter
#

Trigger it using voice if you wish... but an LLM for that is fucking dumb.

primal laurel
#

ok, it's doing reporting, not analysis

deft pewter
#

Yeah. And you can get a report without LLM πŸ˜„

can your AI do convex analysis? Now that would help me greatly

deft pewter

Holy fuck. You don't read, do you? I said you'd write these bash scripts in advance, and that you're welcome to come up with your way of executing them by voice.

glacial knot
deft pewter
#

You didn't create your shitty LLM-based solution whilst on the bike either, right? You did that in advance.

#

🀯

No-one is criticising your voice-activated routines that suit your needs. They're criticising the dumb LLM part that should've been a bash script πŸ˜‚

Show me your linux home assistant gui now.

Linux... and GUI... in the same sentence? Post that on /r/linux too, I dare you πŸ˜‚

why do you think I spent all that time making it work? probsLUL

ok, I only made parts of sway work celrShrug

crisp oriole
deft pewter

The fuck? That doesn't even follow.

#

You've gone from 'how do I get a report of system issues?' to 'you only access HA using cURL'?

crisp oriole
#

Your home assistant runs on docker inside linux. So no gui is needed

deft pewter
#

That's a complete non-sequitur.

deft pewter
#

For the admin, yes. Unironically.

crisp oriole
#

Anyway im not a developer. I made a feature that did not exist. And works for my demands. I dont care what developers think. I did enough scrum poker rounds i can estimate how much effort is required.

Yeah, 16 hours of testing πŸ˜‚
