For the average person? Yes
Everything is in the cloud. They’re streaming all their media
The storage space is from programs

Most in this discord won’t be the average person though

#

Why I went with 512gb instead

primal laurel
#

What a joke

deft pewter
#

If you're not hoarding all your personal media, you don't really need much disk space. I've lost track of how many repos I have checked out on this machine and I've barely made a dent. Then there's all the non-code files I have to go with them, some of which are hefty.

umbral cliff
#

I offload all my stuff to my nas or to the cloud. Even with vms and programs I hover around 150-200gb used
512 is the sweet spot for me

Someone like my partner? Their gaming desktop is 256gb and they only just recently filled it, their laptop was at 100gb before we replaced it

umbral cliff
forest edge

I seriously doubt it had improved since I last tried it

clear ferry

after moving north my latency has increased by 30ms due to the ISP routing to oslo and back again for some idiotic reason

clear ferry

I have never had non symmetrical fiber since 2004

forest edge

realistically symmetrical gigabit let alone anything faster is way overkill for most people

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

We had 10\10 in 2004

#

got to 50\50 in 2006

and it was 100\100 from 2008

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I see one of the largest US Fiber providers (xfinity) has datacap of 1.2TB per month, and their largest plan is 1300\40

umbral cliff
#

Ew

#

Data caps are insane thing to have

clear ferry
forest edge
#

comcast started that datacap bs

clear ferry
#

we had data caps for 6 months of 1999, was very much not accepted by the public

forest edge
#

glad only a few companies actually followed suit

deft pewter
#

Traffic shaping during peak hours is the only acceptable limit. Data caps are gross.

forest edge
#

now cell on the other hand

#

data caps all over the place

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

Never seen traffic shaping in use here either

umbral cliff
#

I think the budget providers here may shape some
But given plans are over provisioned by 10% you probably just lose the 10%

#

I’ve never experienced it though

deft pewter
deft pewter
#

lol? Limitless bandwidth then?

umbral cliff
#

No just provision the infrastructure to be well above the usual loads

deft pewter
#

They do, where they consider 'usual' being some % of households being online at a given time. But when there are big events (sports finals, etc), there are often massive spikes in traffic.

umbral cliff
#

This is the graph of my local infrastructure
Blue is the max amount, black is download

#

Well over provisioned

deft pewter
#

10Gbps max download for your neighbourhood? Good job they aren't all online at the same time then.

umbral cliff
#

Think it might just be per isp too. So just for my isp

#

The slowest I’ve ever gone on my gigabit plan is 900mbps
Barely a blip

clear ferry
#

yeah, most distribution racks are 10G or more per provider here

#

for my old neighbourhood that covered about 200 houses per distribution afaik

#

40G has been quite common from what I've seen too

#

also QoS will handle the traffic as needed without the end user noticing anything

umbral cliff
#

And we’re not a big city here

clear ferry
#

I was discussing with a friend of mine who designs distribution for the northern region, and they are swapping to 100G links to distribution now

#

yeah I see my current ISP had a discussion from 2015, and then the links were either 10 or 40G

deft pewter
#

Shared infra is common here in the UK. So it doesn't matter if you go with a different provider, you're still going to suffer from contention.

forest edge
#

50/50 here

#

companies like at&t don't share

#

others do

clear ferry
#

some of it is shared here, for rural areas, but they have to let their competitiors lease lines from them by law

#

unlike the US where the companies just rat together and divide the areas between them

deft pewter
clear ferry
#

to up the prices

forest edge
#

isn't 90% of norway considered rural tho?

deft pewter
#

Some people hate on them but I really rate Virgin Media. They're a little pricy but they waaaaay overprovision to the point that I've never experienced throttling at peak times. Unlike anything that runs over OpenReach.

clear ferry
#

if you think norway is rural you should see Australia

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I remember slowdowns on DOCSIS in the late 90s

#

but then again, at the time any user on the same node could see all the other users, so we opened SMB shares across the neighbourhood

umbral cliff
#

More likely to get slowdowns on docsis vs something like fibre though

clear ferry
#

docsis is slowly dying here, if you docsis line gets broken they tell you to order ftth since about 2019

forest edge
deft pewter
#

Ah, even worse... it was Netflix.

umbral cliff
deft pewter
#

Maybe a once off event
That's literally my point. Unprecented demands are... well, unprecedented.

forest edge
#

that boxing thing is not the same thing

deft pewter
#

Sure it is. Just like everyone turning their kettles on at the same time back when soaps were popular affected the grid.

#

It's not that the grid sucks. It's that human behaviours are weird and you can't account for everything.

forest edge
#

yea but your talking about a private company with it's own backbone that chocked. it wasn't the isp

clear ferry
#

Here comes the german

glacial knot
#

Oh yeah, the Netflix live stream boxing event was an amusing disaster

clear ferry
#

watch out

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

For VoD they also have their servers in ISP DCs
But that doesn't scale as well for live

deft pewter
#

The Netflix boxing stream was a problem because of massive distributed demand. Contention on your ISP would usually be down to massive local demand. It's still contention.

forest edge
clear ferry
#

doesn't help probably that some countries like the US doesn't have proper net neutrality

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

Did they actually have many more peers than usually?

umbral cliff
#

Still this whole point came around from forced shaping. Not from a once in a decade slowdown

forest edge
glacial knot
#

What's their run rate?

deft pewter
glacial knot
#

Hm, 182M MAU. Sadly that's not super indicative

#

What makes you think Netflix is serverless?

deft pewter
deft pewter
umbral cliff
#

And I wouldn’t be giving that isp money if they did that

deft pewter
#

If you lived in the UK, you wouldn't have the choice. You'd either accept it or have no internet.

#

So again... good for you, and I'm glad it doesn't affect you.

forest edge
#

ironically I think the last big hiccup was a PPV event too, and might even been a tyson fight (I know it was a boxing thing) but that was the PPV over cable and the transaction service they had in place choked

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

yes

umbral cliff
#

I ask since I’ve never done that myself. Either it’s included with whatever streaming service or it’s free

forest edge
#

I never paid for those either but eons ago internet services didn't exists but you could do it through cable tv

#

services like netflix etc

umbral cliff
forest edge

was OTA tv there actualy comparable?

cause here it certianly was not lol

umbral cliff
#

Just too expensive

forest edge
#

5? as in 5 channels?

umbral cliff
#

Never bothered with pay tv

forest edge
#

OTA here before cable started killing it would have like 60+ channels but when cable came out it shot to like over 100 then 200 channels etc

#

now OTA here might have 40ish channels.. and most of those are just absolute trash

umbral cliff
#

Was that 60 nationally available anywhere?

#

How did that work in the days when tvs only had like 10 channels themselves lol

forest edge
#

I think maybe 75%ish of those was national, rest was local filled

#

well back in b&w days there was far fewer

#

even now with OTA being all fancy with atsc 3.0 and the whole 4k blah blah.. OTA in general is shit

#

great if all you cared about was like local news and watching reruns

#

but other than that

umbral cliff
#

Free to air here was just better value than pay tv in the 2000s lol
Didn’t know anyone who actually paid for it

forest edge
#

cable tv here "was" cheap

umbral cliff
#

Yeah it wasn’t here

#

Foxtel made use of their monopoly and ripped people off

forest edge
#

not cheap these days but it was dirt cheap back then

#

yea

#

cable companies couldn't just swallow everything up here

#

at&t back in the days of old phone kind of did us a favor in that

#

cause they tried to monopolize phone service and actually forced a supreme court ruling monopolies were illegal on a big scale

Shower thought: muscle memory is hardware acceleration for humans

deft pewter
#

Muscle memory is one of those terms that drives me nuts. Muscles don't remember anything.

clear ferry
#

In relation to my music playing it is really just playback

#

when I know a song I just play it without thinking

#

I'm pulling up soundfile.wav and let it play and my fingers are the speakers

deft pewter
#

Yeah, it becomes something you do subconsciously. But your brain is very much controlling things.

peak slate
#

You remember how to move all the muscles though

deft pewter
#

Yes. Your brain's memory remembers how.

peak slate
#

If you go into a coma for a few months and your muscles stop working the right way, you have to relearn how to make them all work again

#

So your muscles are as much a part of that equation as your brain

primal laurel
#

Because it's all electrically connected

deft pewter
#

That's like saying my computer monitor has memory because the PC that's connected to it does. After all, it's electrically connected.

peak slate
#

If you install different hardware in the PC, you need to install different software to drive it

#

Muscles are just another piece of hardware your body uses

deft pewter
#

Yes. Controlled by your brain.

The heart is about the only exception.

#

Hit knee. Send signal to brain. Brain reacts. Sends signal to muscle. Muscle contracts.

glacial knot

No

deft pewter
#

Either way... muscles don't have memory. That's how this started.

glacial knot

Depends on how you define memory^^ They do restrucutre based on various stimuli
They don't have a memory in the neurological sense, but there are things that won't be possible with the same brain signals in different bodies based on previous use of the muscle

my wiring or the thermostat's wiring? 😛

ocean oar
#

Yeah, that. Some fans blow up if you make both the high and low speed hot at the same time

iron granite
#

Bit of both

ocean oar
#

So you need to be confident that you're applying power correctly to its inputs

opaque swift
#

oh yeah, absolutely. that would be something that i would have to figure out

#

i'm assuming it's probably either-or on the relay contacts for fan speed

static schooner
#

unless there's a microcontroller involved, it's often two different insertion points in the winding

#

that's how my whole house fan works

#

and yes, it's easy to kill it if you energize both at once

ocean oar
#

This is giving me flashbacks to building an intermittent wiper circuit for one of my father's cars (with an arduino and a couple of solid state relays). Similar deal, motor had two inputs for high and low speed

opaque swift
#

if i kill it, i'm using that as an excuse to just get that freaking room wired up to central hvac. it's a later addition to the house so it has this obnoxious PTAC unit, like you see in motels

static schooner
#

I tried to automate it and ended up tripping its thermal shutoff

# static schooner that's weird. I wonder what constitutes a "large furniture order'

It's something to do with the way they carry stock - small orders are shipped direct from store via courier, but their warehouses also hold stock. You can only order from a warehouse for a truck delivery, meaning you have to spend a certain amount (I'm not sure what the number is). The warehouses don't ship via courier, so once the stores are sold out you can't buy the items by themselves

#

It probably makes sense when you're buying £20 worth of bowls, but when I'm buying £430 worth of speakers I figure that should probably be a "large order", personally...

#

But yeah you have to order actual furniture over a certain value, basically, in order for them to bother shipping it from their warehouse rather than pick it from the store and courier it

crisp oriole
lunar remnant
#

I'm not sad enough to know that off the top of my head btw, I looked it up when I noticed some of the Symfonisk were out of stock entirely, some were in stock for delivery, and some had that "larger orders only"

#

order a couch with your speakers and refuse delivery 🙂

ocean oar

I wonder if they'd actually ship together, you might reasonably expect a package service for the speakers but a freight service for the couch. Might give you the opportunity to cancel the couch before it ships (but after the speakers ship). You'd need to be watching it like a hawk

My home battery dreams have been shattered. I never even clocked that avg grid export = potential battery capacity. Talked to an electrician today who made me realise that, and realised that I don't have anywhere near enough panels for it to be worthwhile.

I mean, the neighbour (duplex) isn't using their roof... could chuck up another 15+ panels on his side 😛

forest edge
#

wait you installed solar on a duplex?

thick dragon
#

Yeah, Australia - so still worth it. 5kW panels, avg generation 16-25kWh a day.

forest edge
#

are duplex's normal there? here it's like the step up from an apartment but still nothing you really invest in

thick dragon
#

Yeah, very common. Lots of regulations/restrictions and body corporate costs. But the housing market is so fucked that you need to be earning $150k+ to afford a standalone house in a metro area.

umbral cliff
#

Solar increases its value too anyway

forest edge
#

is what you call a duplex? townhouse?

#

generally when I think of "townhouses" I think of a bunch of narrow homes built in a row.. duplex is always just a house split down the middle

umbral cliff
#

I would say they're a subset of townhouses, duplex is just two together
Townhouses can be multiple together though for exmaple

#

Yeah personally I would call a duplex a subset of a townhouse

That sounds stupid

midnight adder
#

Very anti solar anti wind etc

#

But they do it in a way where they don't directly ban solar so you can't really go after them legally

#

To get anything installed you have to have a license electrician by the state, but our city also requires a second license. and they only give that license to 2 companies that both won't touch solar

#

They don't approve licenses for anyone else because the owner of those two companies is on the council

midnight adder
#

Don't want to dox myself, but you can find it with some googling

forest edge
#

so oil in the US comes from many places..

midnight adder
#

Yup, but the vast majority goes through one town in the country at some point in its journey.

forest edge
#

i've heard of banning solar farms but never banning solar on residential homes

midnight adder
#

If you ask em it's not banned. It's just not legally possible to install

#

Sure if I wanted to build a 48v system with an inverter that works, but I can't put in a transfer switch, wire it into my panel, etc

#

Which makes it functionally useless unless I want to have a fully off grid setup and that's illegal in town too, you have to have city electric service for your house to be considered habitable

forest edge
#

lol

#

I would find a lawyer that wants to make some money
