Depends on your WiFi, right? 😉 We're in a big house and the router is in a weird spot. And I didn't want to mess around with repeaters, so we have ethernet for the backhaul and a couple of APs in good spots.

But even with the APs, we have enough wireless devices that I'd rather keep the airwaves clear when we're streaming.

that file is typically hidden too

primal laurel

it's not in use

fathom sparrow

it is, by windows explorer, which is the folder button on the windows bar

#

which runs 24/7 on windows machines

unless it crashes, in which it immediately restarts

primal laurel

yeah okay, not in use by me. Windows explorer preventing file deletion is just stupid

You can also restart it easily enough

well, there's really no reason to delete the file tbh

im not deleting the file. Im deleting the folder it's in

NOOOOO

#

dear god

#

I delete folder. Folder gone. Simple

fuck your cmd

restarting will also remove the hold on the file too if windows explorer messed up and kept looking at the file

#

which happens sometimes

primal laurel
fathom sparrow
#

right click, delete

#

without opening it

primal laurel
#

that's what I did

#

then it gave this

#

opening the folder is what fixed it lol

fathom sparrow
#

then you likely have to restart because something is using the file, windows explorer or something else

#

or if you find the process using it, youc an kill the process via task manager

#

things mess up sometimes

primal laurel
#

I know all of that, wasn't my point

fathom sparrow
#

your point was to bitch about windows, when all os's have stupidness like that

primal laurel
#

it's a file windows creates and windows manages. Which then prevents me from doing something useful. It wasn't one folder either, it was like 20 of them

primal laurel
fathom sparrow
#

eh, i disagree

#

I've had all sorts of problems with both mac and linux with random ass shit that's dead simple on windows

#

all os's are the same, they all suck in their own way and we must navigate around the suck

primal laurel
#

linux will do what you tell it to, even if it fucks you up. Im okay with that, that's user error. This is windows actively working against me and that pisses me off 1000x more

fathom sparrow
#

I'd rather have these minor issues with that then trying to get a random peice of obscure hardware to work on linux.

primal laurel
#

completely unrelated

static schooner
#

I can usually use lsof in Mac and Linux to figure out what's going on there

#

austere anchor
fathom sparrow
#

get my external portable monitor to work then 🤣

primal laurel
#

im also fine with that, done it plenty of times. I'm not saying linux has no pain points or less pain points even. Just that it will never do stuff like this

fathom sparrow
#

I've had really good luck with built in widnows drivers or the hardware typically comes with appropriate drivers

austere anchor
#

Generally, I am wary of hardware that ships with its own driver or requires it. There is a very little reason for anybody to reinvent a standard. Like there are plenty of standards for monitors, why would this third-party not utilize one of them? Seems suspicious to me.

fathom sparrow
#

Well, you'd be wary of all camera manufactures then

austere anchor
#

The exception would be if something is truly novel hardware, which doesn’t have an established standard.

fathom sparrow
#

expensive cameras*

austere anchor
fathom sparrow
#

camera cameras

#

like, the literal ccd camera

#

they typically come with drivers for all 3 os's

#

the joys of manufacturing

austere anchor
#

Interesting! I had never seen nor heard of that. I’m not that into cameras or photography though.

fathom sparrow
#

oh, it's not for that, it's for inspection typically

forest edge
#

looks like one of those old spy cameras

fathom sparrow
#

I'm not into either, unless you pay me to integrate it into your assembly line 😉

austere anchor
#

I do wonder why though. Probably something to do with the controls that the camera offers being more robust than what a generic WebCam driver would provide.

#

My assembly line is fine thank you.

fathom sparrow
#

Yes, if you want to run image processing and/or measurements, you need direct access to each pixel from a raw image

primal laurel
fathom sparrow
#

highspeed

#

measurements

austere anchor
#

So this definitely sounds like it falls into my “exceptions” category. Probably most enterprise. I’m sure there’s a whole slew of bespoke industrial products that fall into this category. Super specific needs and they also probably don’t want to release their drivers into an open source kernel because they think it’s some sort of competitive edge for them.

fathom sparrow
#

it's 100% enterprise

austere anchor
#

I’m also just some dude and my philosophy and criteria are not really meaningful to anybody.

fathom sparrow
#

but that's the only time I've needed drivers in windows is my point

austere anchor
#

Maybe Windows has gotten better since I last was using it! It’s admittedly been a while.

fathom sparrow
#

that and dongles, I can't forget dongles

#

cause they are dumb

fathom sparrow
#

I believe you do need a driver for esp devices

#

that's the other thing that pops into my head

#

like, in order to flash to them

austere anchor
#

Printers just work now? That used to be the most annoying one.

#

I haven't owned a printer in 15 years though.

fathom sparrow
#

yep, they just work. There's a huge driver repo that ships with windows and it goes to the web otherwise

#

it's pretty good at fixing network adapter issues too now

fathom sparrow
#

windows has its fair share of bullshit, so I'm not surprised

forest edge
#

not gonna lie, it has gotten worse too

fathom sparrow
#

but it's not a bad os, it's just another os

forest edge
#

but windows has always gone back and forth

fathom sparrow
#

I'm afraid of windows 11

forest edge
#

still better than win 8

fathom sparrow
#

1 because it moves the menu bar, and 2 because it deprecates 32 bit

fathom sparrow
forest edge
#

lol

fathom sparrow
#

the lack of 32 bit thing really kills a ton of hardware that's been in use for 30+ years

#

My company just started rolling out win 11 this year

#

and I"m resisting with the hardware I manage

forest edge
#

yea all the os's are doign that

#

#

64 bit has been out for a very long time tho

static schooner
#

Back when I did some factory tours for memory vendors about a decade ago, they were all using Windows 95

#

there's definitely a line where high-tech ends and "don't freakin' touch it" begins

forest edge
#

I think that's a combination of getting use to a system and NOT wanting to pay for updated software

#

automotive places are still doing that

#

running on ancient machines cause reality is, what they need from computers hasn't really changed lol

static schooner

they just treat these systems like appliances

static schooner
#

I'd also suggest that nobody should be caught by surprise that 32-bit is going away. Plenty of time to plan

fathom sparrow
#

not if the hardware is no longer made, and it was the only company that made anything like it

static schooner
#

Mac has made complete arch changes several times like this

fathom sparrow
#

Yes, but my point is, sometimes we have no choice but to support things from 80 years ago

#

firewire was deprecated in 2010 (windows 10), yet I have a ton of machines still on win7 to support them still

forest edge
#

what are these machines being used for that you still have to retian support on?

fathom sparrow
#

In the medical industry, when things are validated, it takes a mountain to make changes. Also, if these validated process still work and still produce product, then there's no reason to change anything.

#

So, 30 years later, you're still maintaining these production lines...

forest edge
#

the most richest industry to ever exists...

#

you just made me picture those pharmaceutical companies countries paid billions too during covid using those old ass machines lol

fathom sparrow
#

well, usually new lines get new hardware

#

we don't create new lines using old hardware, that would be crazy. So we do source out new machinery that gets us what we want. But we aren't going to upgrade old lines when it costs the same price as making a new line. The no brainer there is to have 2 lines to make twice the product

#

keeps me busy too, and I know way too much about every version of windows and how to get around stupid problems

#

I'm trying to get them to let me put linux on the lines too so IT can't put their stupid shit on it

TBH unless the Zigbee was the defining feature for you, their buy-4-get-1-free deal recently on gen3s was pretty hard to pass up. Came out about 35% cheaper each than a gen4 for the equivalent device

forest edge
#

the zigbee part is the part that interests me but also curious how the addon hat works with it

#

according to the docs the addon fits the gen 4 but says nothing about rather it works in zigbee mode etc

Why on earth would you use zigbee or zw mmwave

forest edge
#

don't get me wrong, you can find way more wifi stuff than zigbee but still

I only have zw decora motion sensors. All else is esphome mmwave

forest edge
tidal bronze

solar zealot

everything has its place inside those categorized forums

#

that way nothing gets lost or spammed away and if you give it a proper title you can expect it to findable

mild canopy

@solar zealot please don't take it the wrong way, I just think some of us prefer a less strict place for discussion. sometimes a question is so simple it does not require a whole forum post. sometimes discussions change the subject organically, from one question to another, with a stupid meme in between 😛

solar zealot

mild canopy
#

the most confusing thing is there's nothing like a #general-discussion channel where asking support questions is NOT frowned uppon.

#

it's normal that people joining a server will flock to some sort of a main channel

i myself tried to ask here at first

mild canopy
#

yea, you'd think that 😆

solar zealot
#

could mark it with a sharpy gatogiggle

mild canopy
#

lol, i can CNC it, even better

#

but i'm not going to build an LED lol

#

i have my red-dot sights for my ASG with a single dot and I want to "upgrade" it 😛

#

but normal LEDs won't cut it cause the size of the light source is super minuscule!

#

the whole package is 3mm x 4mm, so imagine the size of the LEDs

solar zealot
#

does it just illuminate a glass defect?

#

smd leds do come in tiny sizes ^^

mild canopy
#

the red dot is 25µm

#

the circle is 400µm

solar zealot
#

an 0402 should be a fit then

mild canopy
#

lol

solar zealot
#

just good luck not breathing them by accident

mild canopy
#

yea, if you want a huge blob of light in your sights 😄

solar zealot
#

rgb for more accuracy

mild canopy
#

i know you're joking but do you actualy realize how small the reticle is?

#

the whole thing optically is smaller than the smallest comercially available in retail SMD LED package

#

and the package just glows as a one huge blob of light

solar zealot
#

the circle itself wouldnt be that tiny

#

the dot yea

mild canopy
#

yea, the circle is substantial, but the light emiting segments it consists of are still smaller than anything available.

solar zealot
#

i would imagine the real way would be to use optical fibers to connect the thing to the light source

#

if even needed

mild canopy
#

if one was to manufcature it, it would be simpler to use a mask on the die.

#

i'm not gonna build one.

#

it's not possible, even with all my fancy tools.

#

i would just buy it, even if not cheap. but where?

solar zealot
#

im not sure a mask would help a lot, the actual led on the package is quite some smaller

mild canopy
#

the thing i posted the PDF of is an IC die with several LEDs

solar zealot
#

im actually surprised this is done by putting the pattern into the chip and not into the glass

mild canopy
#

glass?

#

what do you mean?

solar zealot
#

how else would the thing appear in optics

solar zealot
#

yea

#

i would have thought this pattern to be a feature of the lense instead of the source

#

learned something new ^^

mild canopy
#

it's a transparent mirror that superimposes the shape of the LED onto what you're looking at

#

it's really that simple.

#

anything you put on the glass, you lose the colimator effect.

#

the whole trick of red-dot sights is the dot (mostly) stays on target when your head moves a little

#

what you're thinking is like a scope sights.

#

then yes, the pattern IS on the glass

#

because the POV does not change that much with a scope.

solar zealot
#

yea that makes sense

mild canopy
#

not the case with red-dot sights as you're looking at them from an arms lenght

#

it's basicaly the same technology as fighters HUD.

#

the HUD stays in the relatively same place in your view even when you move your head side to side.

#

cheap red-dot sights have single mirror. more expensive ones have many internal mirrors before it's send towards the eye, improving the targeting acuracy.

#

technically the longer the distance between the LED and the final mirror the less the dot deviates off-target when you change your POV relative to the gun.

solar zealot
#

i suppose those are battery powered?

mild canopy
#

Yup

#

the dangling part is the LED lol

#

but mine is of the ultra cheap variety 😅

#

which also makes it super light

#

one lense, all aluminium construction.

#

i'm using it on a blow-back ASG

solar zealot
#

Oh it's airsoft?

mild canopy
mild canopy
#

the "dot" appears larger on camera than in reality.

#

it's a laser LED so it kinda screws with the camera sensor.

#

this cheap red-dot sights is adequate for my ASG, it's more accurate than the gun itself 🤣

#

plastic BBs aren't really known for their precise flight path lol

#

but a circle and a cross reticle would be cool.

#

more stuff in view helps finding the middle.

#

I live in Poland. We don't need real guns much. 😛

#

while ASG is fun.

#

but i use my own simplfied scripts. not turn on the ventilator in the living room.

solar zealot
#

It can be a bit rough if you don't just want to talk to it in commands

crisp oriole
#

google AI only costs 40 cents a month or something. is even a free option

mild canopy
solar zealot
#

But to get more lenient matching comes with it potentially triggering on sentences no one would ask

#

That's for debugging

#

Kinda tells you what it would do with the thing you put in

#

the sentence template is the secret sauce

mild canopy
#

so there's something built-in that i can feed the voice-to-text to out of the box?

solar zealot
#

The assistant yes

crisp oriole
#

If you want local voice to work proper you need a i3 for english or a i5 rizen5 for other languages.
for local AI you really need to get some serious pc power with video card

#

and then it isnt as fast as the nabu casa cloud service

solar zealot
#

If you consider doing some AI stuff on there, consider hand picking exposed entities

#

Tho really it shouldn't be needed for many things

#

You can just write appropriately matching sentence templates

mild canopy
#

i don't think i'll be doing any AI on a raspberry Pi any time soon 😅

solar zealot
mild canopy
#

i don't even know if it can handle the voice to text part

#

but it costs me nothing but some time to play with it.

I assume so (not really a zigbee expert)

I have a contact sensor on a gate and it can't hold a connection even to a wired device on the other side of the same wall. I figure I'll try putting a wired repeater in my outdoor socket (directly outside an indoor socket), and use the two adjacent sockets to try to push the signal through the wall

Blue = plug sockets (indoor and outdoor), green = contact sensor
