updated backup system in general is so yeah 😄

regal schooner
#

what channel should i ask for advice/ideas?

static schooner
#

About what?

regal schooner
#

I want to install an exhaust fan in my bathroom. Doesn't necessarily have to be smart, but if that's possible sure i'm open to it

#

Currently it's a hole that has a square frame screwed in. there are 2 outlets abt 5 feet away, under the mirror which is about 30 inches from the ground

#

my uninformed brain is thinking I unscrew this plate, install some sort of fan, wire the cable from the ceiling to the wall, and plug it in to a power strip/extension cord that routes from the outlet to above the mirror

static schooner

#

ok cool I'll head over there. thank you

I'd rather have a few (sometimes funny) false positives than any false negatives.

Huh. Weird. I've not noticed it happen.

I'm using Reolink (4k, even though people claim it doesn't work with Frigate) and a Coral USB and things are working swimmingly.

Never seen this happen 😳

#

Similar to my setup.

Then I guess we can blame the users instead of the platform

🤷‍♂️ try the trained models sometime maybe

which is to say..

once a year.. and then you keep the model indefinitely if you save it. 😉

unless they decide the product is bunk and decide to stop updating it.. 🤷‍♂️

also because you aren't made of money*?

but yeah.. trained models off frigate are much better on false positives.

unborn merlin

been tinkering with using.. old phone line boxes on walls for mmwave sensors actually.. attaching sensors to the back of a blank wallplate and having a screw to tilt the sensor best and etc

fathom sparrow
unborn merlin
#

then just fire 24VDC over the phone wires and use step-down power.

#

because who actually uses the wires in their boxes for phones anymore? 😄

#

but tinkering with shoving multiple sensors on an ESP in a blank wallplate..

#

PIR+mmwave+temp/humidity maybe.. etc

#

good way to have a sensor more.. centralized to a room rather than relying on whatever direction a light switch faces

#

I mean.. its gonna be attached to an ESP32 as well.. so it can also do BLE tracking?

#

in my case of reusing phone wires in walls for power and using the blank-ish wallplate.. doesnt have to be entirely completely hidden

#

yeah.. so many things in retrospect..

#

low voltage wires and hidden boxes in walls..

#

I also do wonder if there's any.. semi easy way to use multiple mmwave sensors together to make a map.

#

i meant esphome ones mostly.. because aqara ones are.. yikes price? 😛

#

RD03/LD2450 stuff

#

also expensive ish.. 😛

and tbh I can probably copy their esphome files for the most part/cut it down to make my thing..

#

expensive for a reason obviously

custom pcbs dont make themselves and all

lol, already did that

😛

#

tho its imperfect.. I need to fix the sonar sensors that detect the door position

unborn merlin

i mean.. the handle is disconnected from anything when its not unlocked so 😛

last cedar

One handle is mechanical and the outside has a solenoid which jumps out when you give it (or remove) power

fathom sparrow
unborn merlin
#

its a solenoid yes.. but uses a clever latching mechanism with a spring.

#

so it can hold in either state without taking more battery power

last cedar
#

Beyond the realms of batteries 🙂

#

Did a power requirement calculation today for the hospital, we have 2 main boards running about 30 doors.

Needs 73Ah of batteries to run those 2 boards for 6 hours 🤣

Self opening doors?

last cedar

We have 67 of those boards

unborn merlin

static schooner

So locks then?

last cedar
static schooner
#

Just curious what takes all that power

#

My locks run on 4 AA batteries for like a year

last cedar
#

The locks your are talking about, they run 300mA each for strike plate locks, 30 of those all at the same time are 10A. So 60Ah. Locks pull most of all

static schooner
#

Mine are deadbolts and they do struggle sometimes

crisp oriole

The fire was a fairly minor one in the laundry room. One of the dryers caught fire, and burned up the others. weak musk
# fathom sparrow did you wire your house?

When I replaced the light over my kitchen sink and found painters tape wrapped around bare wires it seemed like a good idea to go through everything in the house. Found two other instances of that.

Yeah I started after the first full week, but ours was not a new build. 2001… but after growing up in 2 houses 180-250 years old it was positively modern comparatively.

In other news, I'll be relocating/reinstalling my HA again soon. 🤣

New hardware or new home?

robust flicker
#

I just bought an old supermicro server board w a 2014 era xeon and 32G of ram, and plan to throw proxmox on it.

#

New-to-me hardware at any rate. 🤣

tacit sonnet
#

There's a new pope you gotta get new hardware

robust flicker
#

Right now, it's running fine in a pi5. But I also have an old dell Optiplex 790 (2013 era i3 2100) w 16G that is my NAS and Plex server.

Don't wanna have guests over and your light switches are a pope out of date

I plan to put the supermicro ATX board into that Optiplex case, along with a new psu.

#

And since the board in question is also dual gigabit, I'll be running opnsense on the proxmox server, and probably adguard home as well.

#

So I figured, hell, I might as well move the HA into it as well, and use the pi5 for other things.

#

But if probably won't be until closer to the end of the month. That's when the PSU is expected

This will be like the 4th install of HAOS. First was on the laptop. 2nd was on the pi5 on an SDcard because the SSD hat was delayed in shipment. Then installed it on the pi again, because I could not get it to copy off the SDcard to the SSD.

I have used linux since 94. Started with slackware 2.something. Linux kernel 1.2.something.

I have also used Solaris and opensolaris before it was nuked, and I've also used illumos and open Indiana

But where it the port of HA to TempleOS?

robust flicker

First "real" ISP provided a shell and it was Solaris.

Zebra.net. I had a static IP on dialup with them. I don't remember the actual IP address, but the name was stealth.zebra.net. God that brings back memories.

I was the "author" of the old mirc script named Stealth Advanced....

My ISP charges 300$ a month for a static IP but my IP changes about once a year when a hurricane takes out the network. I think they keep everyone static so the remote modem support is easier
