throughput as measured by iperf is only 32 Mbps but that's enough for my use case

#

interesting... why would that happen? last time I had internet service over phone lines was dialup way back in the day lol

iron granite
#

The frequencies used by both seem to be similar. And if the powerline is too close to a badly shielded telephone line the DSL signal is impacted.

#

There are some impact reduction strategies (which impact the bandwidth available), but those weren't enough in my case.

scenic radish
#

ah that makes sense

iron granite
#

I switched to a Wifi bridge instead.

I have thoughts on how running a proper wired backhaul would be possible but there's no way our landlord would be cool with it

shy plinth
#

if your place is wired for cable TV MoCA might be an option

clear ferry
#

This is nfs3 for simplicity

shy plinth
#

similar concept for powerline adapters but over coax

clear ferry
#

Moca is such a weird thing, never seen it in Norway

#

But most coax stuff died in the early 00s

shy plinth
#

yeah unfortunately this house was built in 99 so coax runs in every room.... and zero ethernet

clear ferry
#

My fathers house was built in 64, but I ran ethernet everywhere in 2004 when they got FTTH installed

shy plinth
#

it's on The List for sure. moca's been working well enough that it keeps getting pushed down for more important stuff, as it goes

clear ferry
#

I did try powerline in my old house, but since Norwegian houses are three phase input that works randomly well

#

Some rooms are L1+L2, some are L2+L3 and some are L1+L3

#

Or rather, phase plus N I guess

Ironically I could actually get better internet in the countryside than downtown major city

#

Could get 10g where I lived before with 4000 people, now I can only get 1g in the middle of a 40k city

primal laurel
#

I don't have anything that could even use 10g

I've had 40G core switches since 2015, but I only use 10G still

primal laurel

robust flicker
#

Meanwhile, I could get up to 2G down with 50M up.. If they didn't think I owed them $350 bucks for unreturned equipment, which was returned almost 10 years ago, and so of course I no longer that receipt.... My other options: Starlink, or 3Mbps DSL...

clear ferry
#

I've never returned any equipment in in 28 years of broadband

primal laurel
#

American ISPs will cap the data on your broadband lol

clear ferry
#

They tried that for 6 months here, didn't work out

#

Sometime in 1999

robust flicker
#

@clear ferry what's crazy is that I worked for this company for 5 years, from 2008-2013. So I KNEW how anal they were about their equipment being returned.. so I kept the receipts until I got a bill saying a 0 balance...

clear ferry
primal laurel
#

They gonna come after you only if you become their customer again? How does that work

robust flicker
#

I verified they had everything. In person. I got a receipt for it. Again, in person. And got a bill saying I owed for equipment, at which point I took the bill and the receipt back into the office. "I'll handle it." And a month later, I got an adjusted bill. No balance due. So I stuck the receipt in a box. Problem? After a few years, it's a blank piece of paper.

#

So they started advertising that they now had 2gig service in my area for like 60 a month with no data caps.. I signed up. Had an appointment scheduled for Friday. They called me yesterday about an old account... With unreturned equipment. "we need you to bring this account current before we can connect you.." oh what the f...

#

Went to my box of old receipts. Most of which have completely faded... And I can't find the receipt showing I turned everything in.. because it's one of the faded ones.. ugh.

clear ferry

robust flicker
#

And this morning, my 73yr old dad, who has had an account with them for decades, gets a call. Why? Because I'm a junior....

#

Luckily, he's not your typical "I'll believe anything someone official-sounding tells me" senior citizen.... And he told them to pound sand, and that if they disconnect him, he'll sue.

dawn badge
#

they contacted someone not on your account and give them them infomation

robust flicker
#

@dawn badge Standard skip-tracing...

#

They called him looking for me. But didn't include "junior" when they asked for my name. And since his name and mine are basically the same...

dawn badge
#

it wouldnt matter, if they gave the reason for the call being "outstanding balance" or something then thats your info they gave to not you.

#

but in any case all this is insane.

#

there are some ways to recover thermal receipts but i dont know how reliable they are

robust flicker
#

it absolutely does matter. They asked for me by name. He said it was him, because he has the same name as me

#

It was only after they started talking about an overdue balance that he realized it wasn't him, and it was me. And then informed them of that..

dawn badge
robust flicker
#

I am *literally† named after my dad. Same first name, same middle name same last name.

robust flicker

Nah, what's fun is they are keeping my deposit, saying they're applying it to my "old balance" but they are sending me new equipment via FedEx despite having cancelled the install....

#

So they're either gonna refund that deposit, or I'll sell this crap on Craigslist and get my money back that way. 🤣😂

Uhm. I've been toying with upgrading at least part of my home's gigabit wiring to 2.5 or even 10G for a while now. I've had gigabit wiring in my home since about 2012. At a minimum, I'd like to upgrade the connection between the master bedroom switch and the living room switch.

#

Now that used 2.5 and 10G network equipment is practically everywhere, I may pull that trigger soon. Master Bedroom is where the Internet connection is, and there's my desktop, an AP, my PS4, the Home Assistant Pi, and 2 cat5e lines running from there. One to the garage, to another AP, and the other to the living room. Where the Plex server is, along with the kid's PS3, another AP, and a short jaunt from there to the kid's bedroom. Where she has her PC connected. The original reason for it all was a wired TiVo setup, but we don't use TiVo anymore.

peak slate

robust flicker
#

Yeah... Even if I did 4k kWh a month COMPLETELY off-peak, that's a $400 a month power bill here..

#

We have two different peak pricing. Summer peak pricing is $0.30255/kWh, and winter peak is $0.12255/kWh. Off peak is $0.10255/kWh.

clear ferry

clear ferry

primal laurel

From June onwards it will be one price per 15 minutes btw, instead of once per hour

robust flicker

Peak, for us, is also at different times. Summer peak is 1300-1900 from June through September, winter peak is 0500-0900 November-March. But, weekends are all considered off peak, as well as any months not mentioned.

I have a few Hue dimmer swithes and once in particular is SO inconsistent it's insane. I just cannot get consistent behaviour from it... it's the closest device to my coordinator too! one moment the zha event is triggered just fine.... then it stops working entirely for hours.

robust flicker
deft pewter
#

What doesn't work and why?

robust flicker
#

Because, in the case of most ISPs using CGnat, they absolutely are using IPv6 as their primary transport mode, and use ipv4-over-ipv6.

deft pewter
deft pewter
robust flicker
#

Think of it like rails on a railroad track. You can adapt a train to fit a specific gauge, but if the rails don't go where you want them to, then adapting them to fit won't help.

deft pewter
#

Does Soulseek support IPv6?
No, only IPv4 is currently supported. If you only have an IPv6 Adress, you can still use Soulseek but you will have disadvantages without a public IPv4 such as fewer results and not being able to properly share content.
My reading of that is that as an IPv6 user, you can only connect to other IPv6 users. If everyone switched ,everyone could connect.

deft pewter
#

Sure, not all carriages can go everywhere (today) but that's because all ISPs need to fix their tracks.

robust flicker
#

The isp is only responsible for what THEY OWN.

#

If they turned off IPv4, their customers would lose access to everyone that hasn't embraced IPv6. And then they would lose customers.

deft pewter
#

So we should give all ISPs a few years' notice to prepare. Oh, wait...

simple gazelle
#

Embarassingly I've never touched IPv6, inside my network I have plenty of IPs, and outside of that isn't something I have much control over

deft pewter
#

deft pewter
robust flicker
#

Yes, because government has fixed every other problem in the world.. gimme a break.

deft pewter
#

No need to be so cynical. The EU government has pushed plenty of legislature through recently that's essentially strongarmed other nations into cooperating.

#

A well-known one would be the USB-C move. US government wasn't involved but US businesses had to follow suit to make it economical to produce their goods without making two versions.

#

The EU as a whole has enough collective clout to get the rest of the world to move along with it.

robust flicker
#

You mean the standard that isn't really a standard? USB-C kinda sucks

deft pewter

If all EU ISPs were forced to switch to IPv6 by the end of the year, you can bet the rest of the world would follow because they wouldn't want to be cut off.

Even if USB-C isn't perfect you can just plug stuff in, I've been on a retro computing binge recently and I feel sorry for the US never having SCART (or similar). Sure it was a bit clunky but you could plug stuff together and it'd usually give you the best thing supported.

robust flicker
#

What's the point of a universal connection if it's not really universal, when something with that connection can easily cause a fire when it has something plugged into it that ostensibly supports the standard?

#

It's a HORRIBLE design choice. Dangerous even.

#

And I say this as someone who avoids Apple products like the plague they are.

simple gazelle
#

I've only ever seen it with frayed and dodgy cables, but by that logic all electircal systems are bad

deft pewter
#

USB cables with power delivery have integrated chips to negotiate said power delivery. They don't just unwittingly force hundreds of watts down to the connected device.

robust flicker
#

Negotiate what? There's no standard way to communicate according to you. So how can they negotiate if they can't talk using some standard way of talking...

deft pewter
#

Are you being deliberately obtuse? The connector is a fucking standard shape with a standard pinout. What you choose to do over said cable is another matter.

robust flicker
#

Oh, so NOW it's a standard?

deft pewter
#

🤡

#

Something like "USB-3.2" is a transfer standard. USB-C is just the shape of the frigging plug.

#

It's not difficult.

simple gazelle
#

I've not used it other than cams or APs which are pretty low current. Are there standards for troubling wattage then?

deft pewter
#

PoE also negotiates, right?

forest edge
deft pewter
#

But you only send what it can handle. And the cables are rated to handle it.

forest edge
#

don't crack on whats installed in my house

#

wait you said 5e.. i don't have the e part

solar zealot
#

That's not a lot of shielding but a lot of cats

deft pewter
#

I would've assumed the negotiation also cares about the cable. If the devices at either end can tell whether they're 10/100/1000, why not the power rating?

#

Like, UTP is going to be new, so why wouldn't it carry a few tens of watts?

simple gazelle
#

I am somewhat tempted to get network cabling put in, as I just got the electrics done and so the walls need replastering anyway

deft pewter
#

Do it. 100%

#

It was the first thing we did in this new house, knowing that we'd be decorating anyway.

forest edge

#

But luckily here this isn't an issue

simple gazelle

I'm glad we don't have US tipping culture here yet, though lord knows they're trying. Anecdotally I see bar staff hit 0 for the customer before turning the machine over

solar zealot
#

At my regular places I always pick 5% just because I like the people and the food even tho there is no service besides making it

But it's not a good idea to allow that either, since linux filesystem implementations are famously not secure

I sure hope sudo doesn't hear about this

He'll be upset

glacial knot
#

well, you can do some things to get access to the block device as user
but it's not something you'd do by default in most setups

clear ferry
#

Not to mention the users who mount their devices in their home directories

#

(they are sick btw)

i used fedora in corporate windows environments back when realmd and sssd first appeared. they made it easier to use fedora than macos in a windows environment. at home i use freeipa instead of ad.

670 is a rebranded Gigabyte server

I'm apparently the only one crazy enough to reverse engineer the api of the 670, because we have no documentation of it

i'll check if i need to do any more work on it. i just booted rhcos from iso, set up network bonding and trunking and installed openshift

Anyone else noticed a change in the datetime, timezone with HAOS ion the last few weeks? If I check at the termin my date is set correctly to local date time and timezone, and in the UI it is also set correctly to my local timezone. but using {{ now()|as_local }} provides a date time that is way wrong. I picked this up as my morning briefings have been telling me it bin day when it not and that my next meeting happened last night :D. Not a great wake up, I can tell you :).

solar zealot
#

now() already is time zone specific, as_local on it does nothing

#

if the return is way wrong that means that your system time is set up wrong

What is @clear ferry 's opinion about windows server I wonder

blissful zodiac
stuck anchor
#

my opinion about windows is that it actually is a solid os as long as you don't install any microsoft applications that have kernel hooks deep into the os. like ms office. all that ms crap destabilizes the whole os by giving ux oriented programmers access to mess up deep inside the kernel.

and why would you run a windows os without ms crap applications? almost everything else runs just as well or better on linux.

#

and now that ms is pushing ads, ai and cloud into everything on your desktop... i want to know where my data is.

Quick Question: If I install HAOS through USB, does it install to the drive or does it stay on the USB?

stuck anchor

i have one vm running windows because i need a browser with activex for my old blade server. and one pc i can boot windows on if i should want to fly my cobra with vr glasses. those are my only 2 windows installs.

everything i do at work is redhat based so at hume it is centos for servers and fedora for desktops/laptops

Well I'm doing it over USB because of how weird eMMC is on the laptop.

And also because I thought the named "USB Installer" would make it an installer

Not just put HA onto the USB drive.
