To an extent I think it's just that the consumer and small business electronics industry has matured and gotten kinda boring

#

hopefully i can figure out the HA device node in NodeRed before it gets completely dark 😅 🤣

clear ferry
#

Just drop node red smart

mild canopy

i got roped into it by a friend who got me into HA in the first place. now with more experience, I think I might be able to replicate all my NR crap in regular HA automations.

You should

#

I still haven't found a single thing I've needed node red for in 7 years of HA

mild canopy
#

you're right. i'm doing it.

#

i'll start with on/off tonight and worry about brightness and color later.

#

one less thing to maintain.

mild canopy
#

I've got one (esp32C6) and I love it. but I have to wait for electrical measurement cluster to be implemented to fully use it in the project i bought it for.

glacial knot
#

I wouldn't mind some node based editor for automations and potentially templates though

runic cape
#

I want code-based automations and templates 😦

#

I only just realized a door sensor would not just be good for automations but also for tracking like what time you came home. in case you care

mild canopy
#

ok, i've hit a first snag...

#

the increase <device> brightness does not work like I expected.

#

it just increased it by 1.

#

the bulb has brightness_move with a positive or negative value. but i don't see that on the list when crating the automation.

#

i was using this extensively in NodeRed. i wonder how to access this functionality from normal HA automations?

primal laurel
glacial knot
#

Neither are Haskell though

runic cape
#

I thought Nodered was some kind of visual coding thing

mild canopy
#

it is.

runic cape
#

I meant like normal code. made of letters

#

and punctuation characters

mild canopy
#

the main selling point of nodered is it's visual and you can see what's happening with your automation and where it gets stuck if things don't work 😛

glacial knot
#

the traces in HA are ok~ish to see what's going on in the automation

mild canopy
mild canopy
#

NodeRed has it's pros and cons.

glacial knot
#

it shouldn't be too hard to do something like starlark instead of the yaml. or even a bijective conversion

runic cape
#

I want automations to be like listener functions you register or something

#

this isn't happening any time soon I know

#

oh and same for templates

#

I don't have mobile internet

mild canopy

well. i'm stumped.

glacial knot

I have the app and VPN, but still use the phone tracker via my AP for detecting if I'm home 😮

mild canopy
#

i might have ditched NodeRed a bit prematurely.

#

glacial knot
#

colour/temperature/dimmable here. Various brands. All on zigbee

runic cape

mild canopy
#

glacial knot

Automations 🙂 I essentially just have a couple scenes set up

mild canopy
#

i was using hold functions of my buttons.

#

i can access the hold functions of my buttons, but I have no idea how to put the bulb in any of the dimmer states

#

in nodered i was sending a payload with {"brightness_move_onoff": 60} or {"brightness_move_onoff": -60} and {"brightness_move": 0} when i wanted to stop. but there's no such things in the standard automations creator.

Bram Diederik’s Yet Another Project to Save the World is an honest, raw, and deeply personal presentation that outlines a broad philosophical

From what I read, it was a widespread but seconds short outage. The cause isn't fully known, yet. They suspect a power grid sync issue to be the cause.

deft pewter
#

lol... someone's already added it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_major_power_outages

This is a list of notable wide-scale power outages. To be included, the power outage must conform to all of the following criteria:

The outage must not be planned by the service provider.
The outage must affect at least 1,000 people.
The outage must last at least one hour.
There must be at least 1,000,000 person-hours of disruption.
For example...

tawdry stirrup
deft pewter
#

So it's not even been an hour yet?

tawdry stirrup
iron granite
#

Most of the time of the outage is likely due to the time needed to restart a power grid in a controlled manner.

Uk powercuts are super rare and when they happen they're at max 2-3 minutes.

I'd expect a system that complicated and that critical to be have elaborate extensive monitoring that could at the very least immediately identify the failure. Moreover, I'd expect it automatically isolate faults and reconfigure before a complete grid failure. The implications are that someone with knowledge of the grid system could sabotage it during start of a war or large scale terrorist attack completely neutering a response. If it was an attack them there's no question the grid operators failed. Attacks must be presumed as possible and all attack surfaces designed to self defend.

solar zealot

Well it somewhat did isolate the fault

That's how the rest of the EU is still enjoying the wall juices

Politicians know that ONLY social spending get votes .. spending on infrastructure ... people think that's free and just expect it to always work. I guarantee with 100% certainty, there are documented warnings from engineers that this will happen someday, and what should be done to prevent it. Exactly none of those guys are surprised at all. But they'll be blamed for the failure by the politicians who ignred their warnings.

Maybe people will end up giving matrix a chance... biggest flaw imo is that they push (pushed? dunno, haven't looked at matrix for a few years now) for E2E so hard. E2E is cool and all, but frankly useless when the sole purpose of having the tool is leading public discussions about stuff. Add to that how their particular E2E implementation just gets in the way constantly and the average user is already done with the platform before they've written the first message

deft pewter

Maybe people will end up giving matrix a chance

deft pewter
primal laurel

It's not a big list

summer depot
#

Failures do happen. That's why you design for them and montor for them. Cost? I wonder if anybody died or was seriously injured due this power collapse? How much sales revenue and VAT was lost? What is the cost of the food and other material like drugs that must be maintained at low temperatures?

primal laurel
summer depot
deft pewter

Sure. So just about everything can stay out of here.

summer depot

summer depot

That's why engineers exist ... they do the mostly unappreciated hard work of keeping civilization operating. I'm sure a large amount of the grid infrastrure is old and hasn't been upgraded to keep pace with increased electrification . And, I'm sure engineers told the politicians it was needed but as I said previously infrastructure maintenance spending doesn't get votes .

deft pewter
#

There's not an unlimited amount of resources (time, money, talent) to throw at every issue. Nothing is perfect, nor will it ever be. Not sure why you're up in arms about it.

#

As they say: shit happens.

#

Yeah, that's dumb 🫠

solar zealot
#

That's enough ego to fuel probably four times as many countries as there are now

clear ferry
primal laurel
summer depot
#

Why? The most critical underpinning of modern civilization is electricity. You just saw what happens when it fails. Without a reliable constant supply of electricity, a lot of us will die. Electricity is no longer luxury, it's an absolute necessity. I'm sure somebody, an engineer, has done a simulation of what happens if electricity is down for various lengths of time. I'll bet it's not pretty.

primal laurel
#

that said, failures of this magnitude at the transport level are never supposed to happen. The fact that this morning everything was back up already says a lot about how well prepared they were, those investment paid off

summer depot
#

You just saw a 100% electrical failure for about 60 Million people, That is unacceptable Q.E.D.

It clearly is acceptable

summer depot

solar zealot

summer depot
#

The simulations have been done and the results so devasting that they are classified. If wide spread power failure persisted for one week people will begin looting killing each other. Beyond that, it becomes apocalyptic.

robust flicker
#

As someone in "Hurricane Alley" losing power for even an entire day is not the big deal you are making it out to be. A mostly full chest freezer will keep everything frozen for almost a full 24 hours.

primal laurel
#

a very interesting case happened recently which caused power to go out at my parents house. Maintenance workers activated an earthing switch, normal procedure. For reasons that would take too long to explain that caused a short circuit. Short circuits happen all the time, that's why you have breakers. However the breaker failed because of earlier maintenance work, which caused the overhanging cable to expand due to thermal stress, which caused an AC -> DC short circuit with the overhead line of the train below. Which then blew up the transformer station 😅

robust flicker
#

Yeah, after bad thunderstorms, which are basically a daily occurrence here, our area may have as many as 25k people without power. Just in my area. You just deal with it. It isn't fun, but it's not the apocalypse, either.

They can't forbid generations in school tho :P

One way to protect your frozen food is to use CO2 discharge to cool the freezer. That's what labs use to keep even their -70C freezers cold during a power failure if they don't have generators for 48 hours or longer depending on the size of the CO2 tank, Liquid N2 discharge can get even colder

Phone usage? No. Phones have been commonplace in the home for almost a hundred years.

#

Exactly. Unlimited access to endless streams of nonsense, and all the ill effects of social media. And all in their formative years when their health (both physical and mental) needs particular care.

I was curious if anyone here has two locations they manage with Home Assistant. I have another property I'd like to control through Home Assistant for basic access control (remote gate opening), lighting automation, and similar tasks. I'm considering setting up a separate VLAN for all the IoT devices and linking them via a VPN to my main IoT network.

However, I'd also like to add users to the Home Assistant server who shouldn't have access to any of the devices.

Is this even possible with Home Assistant?

*Not looking for support on how, just wondering if this possible.

You can bike there

Yeah, location matters. I grew up in a fairly small town with great access to lots of small villages/rivers/canals.

The more interesting thing is whether they replaced something or lead to entirely new phenomena
Though social networks likely did the latter

What do you mean by replacing something?

Oh. You can see that clearly in restaurants. Families don't talk to each other over meals now because the kids have their iPads out instead.

Random longshot. My local non-profit hacker space could use a new events calendar system. We have a bunch of volunteers that need to create events with RSVP support, and have some of the events get posted on an internal accessible page, while some of them should get exposed on our public website with pretty pictures and a map. Anyone know of a good open source tool that can do this at a minimum.

Just because they stopped making the Accord coupe in 2017 doesn't mean they don't still exist! cries in coupe

I looked for weeks before finding one.. and I had to settle for the auto V6, because the manual v6 is crazy rare to be found for sale. Everyone who has one is keeping it!

static schooner

#

It's basically the same thing as the old school muscle cars having a bigger camshaft... Without the drawbacks of having poor performance in regular driving. That "lope" that is so desirable? Yeah, that's the car struggling to stay running at an idle....

#

VTEC and all its clones, basically give you a bigger camshaft, but only when it can actually be useful, such as at higher RPMs and when more fuel is available for combustion.

#

A straight camshaft has problems at both extremes, either running rich at low power, and just throwing unburned gasoline out the exhaust, or running lean at the top end, which could cause engine knocking.

#

That's what Honda engineers were looking to mitigate when they came up with VTEC.

#

Sorry if I went too into the weeds, but I find the whole thing fascinating. 😂

Anyone else using powerline ethernet adapters for anything? I absolutely hate that I am, but I guess I'm impressed that it's been working as well as it has. I wanted to put an AP in our garage for some cameras and an ESPHome garage door opener and it's been working great. Because of the layout (and because we rent), there's no way to run a proper wired backhaul and a wireless bridge also wouldn't work

#

We're on the second floor and the (detached) garage is, of course, on the first floor. Between the interior of our place and the garage is 3 block walls and a metal staircase lol
