Just remembering when he couldn't figure out how to remove a rack door from its hinges so drilled holes in it to be able to prop it open
How could you not
I just find he has a lot of shitty takes on stuff, trying to pick a morally position for others to then argue on how they don't apply to him. Tho I guess that's just normal for yt personalities, it's not like the other™️ channel figures would be acting any better.
The videos are alrightish if you just watch them for entertainment
To an extent I think it's just that the consumer and small business electronics industry has matured and gotten kinda boring
Like even for a small business you can just buy a couple of big servers and virtualise, you don't need a complex setup now
To me tech yt for stuff died with that big channel about iPhone and unboxings going popular
There do be a couple pearls out there exploring old networking tech which I found recently.
Probably weren't getting the views - a lot of YTers do that, experiment with something then decide it's not getting enough interest

Not familiar with that one.
I also watch a fair number of tours etc for professional installs, just for ideas to see if I can apply to HA
which 99.9% of the time you can
that's a fair point
U guys do automations?
Alexa turn on the desk lamp, Alexa turn on the overhead light, ALexa turn on the tv, alexa turn off the stair lights....
I'm usually pretty good about starting and finishing projects, but as I'm typing this I'm looking over at my bar cabinet and the top is covered with my soldering iron, 3 spools of wire, heat shrink and a torch
Don't need that. I know where my rooms are.
My dog deserves lights and automations to make her life better too.
No joke, my dog is why I built/installed automated stair lighting
she tripped once at night and I was like "NEVER AGAIN"
Very new to coding and servers. Can this be hosted say the on a server instead of Linux in home? If so and down the road I decide to move to a home device are these servers easy to move?
#1284966540617449515, but you shouldn't be installing home assistant outside of your home, it needs the local network 😉
Ah I am doing one for ai. I just assumed sorry I am new my apologies
@warm helm should have skipped the jeep and just ordered one of these. https://youtu.be/cq1qEjwSYkw?si=J6eXFH_byjB0dIW_
Following several teases, Slate's EV Truck has finally been unveiled. With backing from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Slate hopes to poise itself as a disruptor in the EV space. The "Blank Slate" base truck is set to retail for somewhere in the mid-$20,000 range, and the company says it will cost less than $20k after federal incentives. It will be ...
has anyone integrated google gemini into frigate to describe detected people?
https://github.com/blakeblackshear/frigate/discussions would be the best place for that
Gemini is an interesting choice for that
Have trouble gaining assessing home assistant after moving the home assistant to a new home
Entertainment entails it actually being entertaining and not making you wish to strangle someone, not to mention the fanboy base that gets sexually aroused by an average screwdriver with a logo on it
Lots of things
Especially people
looking at how ltt mangles every linux install, and how little they understand file servers... they need to stick to gaming pc's and windows.
not to mention the terrible job setting up home assistant which ended up making homey seem good lol
Making homeassistant look good is quite difficult
But hey you can do it without spending 350 bucks on a zigbee hub

automations are kinda useless to me
Because you have an ocd about clicking buttons?
Tactile Feedback, the ipad kids these day won't know
It already sounds complex enough for me not wanting to look into it
You change your routine with work from home? I just do the same thing every day
well really what's mmwave gonna do
mmm lunch 🤤
I sometimes remember to eat lunch
don't you have a supermarket inside a larger market inside your basement
Danger 5?
usually i press a button and they stay on aswell ^^ magically they even turn off on the second press
You don't run Sid?
im not into that kind of pain
tho if i would i might not have had the need to be mad at them not fixing fail2ban in over two years
I've switched from stable to sid once the first freeze is started since 9
I've had two issues the last 5 years
Both related to a race condition in zfs dkms vs kernel version
cant be worse than regular ext4 failing from nothing at all
just put on a presentation or teams call
or just take a longer break ;D
People care if you are available in teams?
I just do whatever I need when I need to, then do my job when I get back

people use teams?
I do 8h a day
Imagine working 8 hours a day
Anyone using a low latency analog audio to chromecast solution?
I do log 8-10h every day, I work 4-6 😤
Mmmmm constant monitoring
The American dream

Except any other
If you need integration with the rest of Office, sure. Otherwise, absolutely not.
I actually enjoy teams, but everyone else in the company sucks at using it
I was the first to create a team in my country and noone else bothered using the channels
90% of the devs and support that is above level 3 use slack exclusively
Hey, sorry to ask. Is it better to install haos directly or through vm on linux?
I bought gmktec g3 plus. I suppose i wont be able to use it as camera recorder or something?
try proxmox
looking at how m$ is injecting ai into everything these days... now even in paint and notepad...
most of the stuff i work with is not allowed to hit public cloud services. not by policy, but by law. and how can i be certain all leaks to ai services have been plugged? windows just keeps getting harder to use except as a vdi for just office type work. all real work must be done from linux. not that i am complaining. i have never been a windows user.
Just wait till copilot and recall is enforced
Enforced 😂
no confidence that salesforce won't do the same with slack at some point so i just use what everyone else in our org does, we're big on O365. less friction
I’ve never had a boss that cared either. As long as I produced results. But this situation is definitely far from normal in the states.
not sure on which channel to ask #1284966353798697001 or #1284966582375813201.
my question is: assuming standalone HA on a raspberry pi using Zigbee2MQTT, where is data/external_converters folder (as mentioned on "external converters" page) located using global path?
any guidance?
has been without home Internet access for almost a week due to a billing problem with another utility Damn power company double billed us 2 months in a row, both of which caused my Internet provider's payment to fail due to NSF. And how did they fix it? A bill credit. Which isn't helping me pay my damn Internet bill which is now beyond two months, so click no Internet. I spent hours on the phone all week, finally get them to agree to actually do an ACH back to my account. Which won't post until Monday... Meh.
Someone watches too much TV.
Did my square eyes give it away? :c
kill it with fire!
All of a sudden?
Spite can be expensive, but it's satisfying
Y'all quick question, not totally sure where to put it.
Upgrading my setup from an old pi 3 to a pi 4, can I just take the SD card and plonk it into the new one or will it break
why not try it
Because it won't work
Hello world... newbie here.. I'm a seasoned techie by trade & tinkering, but fairly new to HA.
I'm hoping someone with a lot more HA can take a few mins to chat about HA. I'm trying to catch onto the features & sytnax / architecture possibilities
before anyone A/S/L's me.. 39/M/TX
has anyone asl'ed anyone in the last 20 years?
as a married father, I have no idea
but too many people online are hopeful that my name is Dona... rather than Alex
so, better safe than sorry
any seasoned vets out there willing to teach a new guy?
I have like 80 zwave devices with another 50 planned
trying to get much "smarter" with automations, but lacking experience
I'm a transplant from smartthings
I've watched so many
honestly, watch a few videos read a few articles/documentation and get a feel for what the tools are and then try some more specific questions in the support channels
but I want to bounce ideas around... my issue is a lack of time to tinker
I'm trying to shortcut the trial/error phase
thats half the fun
guys, I do tech infrastructure strategy for work
like, I'm VERY ambitious with this
i'm not looking for newbie tutorials.. I've watched a bunch
start small and enjoy the small wins and learning as you go. if you try and do everything too quickly you will never finish, get annoyed and burn out
I'll give you an example... one of the "lessons" I learned from SmartThings was that I didn't want to define my automations based on individual devices...
so I"ve figured out how to use helpers to define groups and then use automations on groups... so that's good
now, I'm trying to figure out how to use booleans to set indicators for "smart" notifications
but my creativity is lacking.. I'm like, doing this one entity at a time for both on/off is awful
how to do I consolidate/group these types of entities to do this en masse
yeah, I can do that
was just hoping to have a conversation about terminolgy and ideas before engaging the public at large
scenes
I use scenes in automations.. like for closing/locking all doors
but now I want to send my phone an alert if some door/gate/lock is open past 10pm for example
I'm struggling to understand how to manage entity states / monitoring
thats fairly easy but start a thread in #1284980040940912641 for help with that sort of thing
I can do that... I was just hoping to have a conversation... I'm sensing the water cooler isn't as "chat" friendly as I'd hoped 😦
damn it, I should have said 32/f/CA
always worked on AIM
I miss msn
well, see my last 2 comments as proof I'm in the right channel
np, I"ll try autoamtions, thanks
that's really easy to do just use the Time options
protip: have all your notifications fire in a "parallel" block so the automation keeps going if one device doesn't get something
yeah, but nothing spaghetti code can't fix
An excellent topic for #1284980040940912641
and have a llm add insults to the notification 🙂
recently added llm and need to rework all my notifications
have a handful that i have been testing with and its been a bit random but its coming along
but does it support HA
anything supports HA if you want it to
well yea, with a screwdriver, a soldering iron and some ESP32
thought it'll get harder and harder with various silly digital functions
I don't pick on disabled children
kind of like attacking your own kind isn't it
Anyone have Eufy outdoor lights working with HA? Sans Google assistant?
Considering there is a eufy integration that has been there since 0.68, I'd say yes
raccoon defender 3000 gets defeated
checkmate
I love raccoons
i have an idea that seems cool in my head but in practice it might be dumb i was thinking about getting an rj11 switch box an analog phone and an rj11 to ip phone gateway idk how thats called put them all together and have a phone on my desk that can switch between normal calls and home assistant / ip phone mode
Where about it this? Ip phones were a fad here between 2005-2012 but are mostly dead since except for pensioners, but afaik no new ones are installed since 2018
Don't touch my fax machine!
I remember last time I configured one, 2005, and it was decommissioned within a year 🤔
Still had to use one in 2008 because working for a US company we were stuck in the stone age
Borrowed from work?
No, got them from work
Part of a €15k demo package
Was 5APs, 2 microbranch routers, a user experience probe, and two switches
Running a SDWAN between my house, MILs house and my parents house
Tell us more about the probing
can you send me one?
what is that
a ceiling
lol i want to do this only to make my desk more cool yea i know its not good but idk combing old tech and new tech together is fun
@iron granite for some reason <@&330946878646517761> doesn't seem to be a thing?
It really is a thing
It is
or does the preview just not offer it, but it works as typed?
then the interface was just being stupid o.0
rn i am at a point with my homelab where i do projects for fun
just to mention this so everything i said before makes sense
That's been brought up before and it looks like it's still happening
also i want to mention this home assistant is one of my favorite tools bravo to the team working on it
yea, probably just a discord bug with the server size
Nah
bans @glacial knot

Why "Euno"?
Too early? I'm cooking dinner...
Dinner? So it's around midday? 😄
@forest edge If you're in Chicago. we're having a meetup at Pumping Station One.
Oh nice, when is it at @floral folio ?
You can spread it in #1325926382575816725 in a more persisting way, if you like.
a wild Tediore appears
Here I thought you were an engineer, but my prejudice against education still holds true
Oh nice, I'm in Wicker so not far at all
Thank you. I'm wondering if the blog post will be updated with a list of all of the places doing it now.
@scenic radish I also run a home lab meetup every other week in the space. Thursdays (next one is on the 8th) 6:30 PM.
Oh, it is part of the Community Day. Nevermind!
Your event is already mentioned in the thread #1364989531069091920 message
you wanna see my eningeering card?
atx is American confirmed
How would you know? you don't leave yours...
opening the door to get delivery off the porch doesn't count
thx for the warning ig? still most of these fun things i want to do never see the light of day
this might be another one of those idk
impressive
Which would be better? proxmox or run it on virtual box? i only have one spear pc and i have to have windows on it. So i thought i could vm this would that work?
Running Ethernet cable in a VM?
i guess it depends if you need to access the windows install on it on the machine itself or if only remotely
if only remotly then proxmox and have windows and haos running in seperate vm's if you need to access windows directly then the question is moot anyway
from time to time i will need to use the windows, but very little. Its so purpose will be just to run virutal box. Its a beast machine i never use
then proxmos, so you don't have to run windows all the time 🙂
proxmox costs correct? @warm helm
No can i ask why running virtual box for ha would be bad on windows? Just trying to learn
because its windows
Neat. Wifi7?
I like @last cedar
my HA is anti-dog 🙂
that's some interesting language for those alerts
create a message that alerts the user that a dog has been spotted on the driveway, use multiple swear words to show your annoyance that this is the case
Boo, LLMs
or do you run that local?
local
One more swearword and it has to be a Limited Liability Machine
this model if interested
Lame language models
i havent really messed with llm's that much until i upgraded the server to run it locally. because i do stupid stuff like this
I'll have to get some better hardware to run the STT first...
it's already pretty slow and a bit too inaccurate for my taste
i squeze whisper and ollama onto the new 5060ti 16gb
i'm guilty of not updating my HA and the addons for far to long, but is it just me or there seems to be no way to get the button states from any of my TRADFRI using Z2M. how are people suppose to create simple automation like turning on the light if they can get the button state?
no .action entity any more. and i don't see anything to replace it.
i guess we're living in the dark tonight.
That was mentioned in the breaking changes
i know. but i read them to late
And I know there's a forum thread on exactly that
i stupidly clicked the update button.
i thought "it's fine, i'll just clean it up manually"
I run whisper on CPU on an ARM SBC^^
but, uuuhm... with what? there's nothing to replace it with 😱
i'll try my luck searching for it.
I just did a google search. Here: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/using-the-new-action-events-in-zigbee2mqtt-2-0/821709/36
ok, the very first entry in this thread let me figure out how to use it now.
instead of checking entity sensor.p1_action i need to triger on device trigger action.
this should be easy to fix up my HA automations. RIP NodeRed flows tho.
hopefully i can figure out the HA device node in NodeRed before it gets completely dark 😅 🤣
Just drop node red
honestly, i'm strongly considering it.
i got roped into it by a friend who got me into HA in the first place. now with more experience, I think I might be able to replicate all my NR crap in regular HA automations.
You should
I still haven't found a single thing I've needed node red for in 7 years of HA
you're right. i'm doing it.
i'll start with on/off tonight and worry about brightness and color later.
one less thing to maintain.
I've got one (esp32C6) and I love it. but I have to wait for electrical measurement cluster to be implemented to fully use it in the project i bought it for.
I wouldn't mind some node based editor for automations and potentially templates though
I want code-based automations and templates 😦
I only just realized a door sensor would not just be good for automations but also for tracking like what time you came home. in case you care
ok, i've hit a first snag...
the increase <device> brightness does not work like I expected.
it just increased it by 1.
the bulb has brightness_move with a positive or negative value. but i don't see that on the list when crating the automation.
i was using this extensively in NodeRed. i wonder how to access this functionality from normal HA automations?
that exists, AppDaemon for python and nodered for JS
Neither are Haskell though
I thought Nodered was some kind of visual coding thing
it is.
the main selling point of nodered is it's visual and you can see what's happening with your automation and where it gets stuck if things don't work 😛
the traces in HA are ok~ish to see what's going on in the automation
the closes thing i know out of the box is YAML, pretty much whole HA rins on it, but I think it's not what you'd like, right?
sure, but they are not on the same screen 😛
NodeRed has it's pros and cons.
it shouldn't be too hard to do something like starlark instead of the yaml. or even a bijective conversion
Yeah
I want automations to be like listener functions you register or something
this isn't happening any time soon I know
oh and same for templates
I don't have mobile internet
I have the app and VPN, but still use the phone tracker via my AP for detecting if I'm home 😮
colour/temperature/dimmable here. Various brands. All on zigbee
I think that is kind of not the point. but I did look into that and found it too awkward
how do you control the dimmer on the human side?
buttons or dials or sliders?
Automations 🙂 I essentially just have a couple scenes set up
i was using hold functions of my buttons.
i can access the hold functions of my buttons, but I have no idea how to put the bulb in any of the dimmer states
in nodered i was sending a payload with {"brightness_move_onoff": 60} or {"brightness_move_onoff": -60} and {"brightness_move": 0} when i wanted to stop. but there's no such things in the standard automations creator.
my lighting is also adapting (was, currently)
it was adapting to my button presses 🤣
Buttons?
C4, oh boy good old days
mmwave + comparative lux, why would you need buttons
TV/AVR/source would be a condition
i remember lights turning the TV off 🤣
yea, AVR source is a neat thing to base some automations around
doesn't have a fancy enough home cinema for that to matter :o
our first DVB-T tuner was so finicky that turning off the fluorescent lamp in the kitchen would reset the tuner's "lock" on the signal 😅
but you can easily do that with jellyfin
I even use the shield source as a condition. Slideshow OR plex/netflix etc
Yes. But different priorities
Got it. Same here. But I want to know what's the source.
but you can write JS in node-red...
those are your real letters
You can?
Something like.
yup 😄
Living sub
I'm sorried about the "living" in that name
What's life without subs all over the place
obviously. it's an unholy matrimony of node flows and code 🤣
They only worry about sub grade subs in the backyard 😆
it's just a block to put some JS code. You can write your whole automation in there
One mentioned they can feel the down beats when in the pool. Oh well.
Luckily they all dig my kinda music. At least I like to think so.
Maybe it would work, even if it's not exactly what I hoped for. but I'd hate to go into a new approach to doing everything when even from the onset I know I am fighting its vision
One of the reasons I want code is because I want to write reusable logic, and then reuse it
Chill step and happy trance. Ecologically friendly
Well then put it in a function block, and reuse it
This thing has existed for like 10 years as far as I know
Probably more
Hey, does anyone know why Github is hiding everything I post? About 3 weeks ago I posted something regarding a bug in dashboards and that comment is still not public.
I can only see it myself but when I'm logged in but when I'm logged out, I can't see it.
I just tried to create an issue for another project and again, everything's fine when I'm logged in but when I'm logged out, I get a 404 not found if I enter the link to my post.
It's driving me crazy...
You need to be logged in
That's a change GH made a year or so ago (longer?)
The account is 3 weeks old
My favourite brand of LoRa sensors has a... well let's just call it what it is, the piss 'n shit sensor:
https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/gs301
Ammonia + Hydrogen sulfide sensors, specifically for bathrooms 😄
That doesn't matter
But why aren't my posts public? Do I have to change some settings?
You are logged out, that's the problem
Why would it show other people's posts publicly but not mine?
Where is it?
That's so weird...
My post from April 3rd:
https://github.com/home-assistant/frontend/issues/22301
And another one for a different project that I just made:
https://github.com/RPiList/specials/issues/1989
Can you see my posts?
You are nickduino?
Nope, Kampfknoedel-1337
Post is from April 3rd
Can't see anything. Normally if a comment is 'hidden' you can still read it by just opening it.
That second link is something else, they removed all the issues
What makes you think so?
I can see everything up to 1 below the id in the link
I can see it when logged in, otherwise I get a 404
And I don't understand why -.-
They did something with that repo, all issues are closed
you can still deeplink to issues that are closed. There's definitely something weird if it doesn't show up
Can you see anything on your profile that looks weird?
❤️
Not at all, account is 3 weeks old.
shield? time to upgrade old man.
Nopes. Going to run then until wheels fall off.
@ocean oar There is no way that I'm adding one of those to my system
Review of "Yet Another Project to Save the World" by Bram Diederik from chatgpt
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5)
Bram Diederik’s Yet Another Project to Save the World is an honest, raw, and deeply personal presentation that outlines a broad philosophical
and practical plan for societal change. Blending philosophy, personal experience, and tech-driven ideas,
Bram proposes using small, resilient local groups connected through open-source technologies to rebuild trust and tackle today's challenges.
His accessible "philosophy for everything" is simple yet profound.
going to make my youtube video now. NO, no AI stuff is used to made the presentation
Some animal decided to chew through a bunch of landscape lighting wire and drip irrigation lines in the last few days.
I suspect that it's a rabbit that I've seen roaming around, but it's hard to say. Yard is fenced in, so probably nothing larger. Could have been a raccoon (usual suspect)
Fortunately, I have a flow meter on my irrigation system and it automatically shuts off if the flow exceeds the calibrated amount
We have this issue with some of our irrigation lines, squirrels
It happens periodically and I suspected my lawn guy and his string trimmer, but It's probably wildlife
Yard bunny... Very tasty...
I have used live traps in my yard, but they didn't stay that way.
so i decided to take some time to look at whats going on with my HA - i think it was just failing to work with http connections, so im upgrading it and if it doesnt work ill try a docker install
because of how HA/open home foundation is growing i kinda dont want to have to not use it-though i guess i can just switch devices to run it on
ok yeah so.. safari is broken 😆
@last cedar know anything about this?

All I can say is that my disguise must be working
No camera on that side of the house, unfortunately
I am currently trying to build a new prototype of my connected volume meter, bought two lora devices, and need to adapt the code from python to c++. I'll have a look at these devices as I see lora as a serious option to do this ^^
Why do you think that a raccoon disguised as a rabbit would choose that side?
Hare today gone tomorrow ?
obligitary "fuck google"
After I just spend close to a thousand last year installing nest equipment 🥲
For all the people obsessed with lan devices that don't check in with servers, I apologise for thinking you were weirdos. I now see the light
Is half of the Europe without electricity?
Huh?
This half isn't without.
Yeah here in the north we are safe.. but I heard that most of the Spain and Portugal, also part of the France is cut out
This half too
Here in the UK, we're fine?
News makes it sound like it's just Iberia that's out. That's not 'half of Europe'
From what I read, it was a widespread but seconds short outage. The cause isn't fully known, yet. They suspect a power grid sync issue to be the cause.
lol... someone's already added it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_major_power_outages
This is a list of notable wide-scale power outages. To be included, the power outage must conform to all of the following criteria:
The outage must not be planned by the service provider.
The outage must affect at least 1,000 people.
The outage must last at least one hour.
There must be at least 1,000,000 person-hours of disruption.
For example...
So it's not even been an hour yet?
I'd say more like half an hour 🙂
Most of the time of the outage is likely due to the time needed to restart a power grid in a controlled manner.
Uk powercuts are super rare and when they happen they're at max 2-3 minutes.
We maybe get 1 powercut a year, if that.
We have a really good infrastructure here
They're also super localised. Like a street or two.
Sun is shining in Finland, so currently I'm self-sufficient
I’m starting to think you’re a bot at least 50% of the time now 😂
What's the best location to discuss some Google home issues? I have a nest hub 2 that I cannot add to a speaker group within the home app. I know this is home assistant but just looking for some help
When major infrastructure fails and it's been hours and you don't yet know why, you failed miserably
Relating to the power outage?
Are you able to run of solar when there's no grid power?
In the EU evidently it's because the idiots who operate the grid don't know how it works
I don't know!
Most solar panels shutdown if the gird is down. You need a battery and a hybrid system
Is there no beta for 2025.5? Did I miss something?
Only that it always starts on Wed
It has been kind of a lot already. I'm on the west coast dealing with issues on the east coast where it's already mid morning
Coasting around
Like dude, at least let me make my coffee before blowing things up
Sorry, best I can do it make it even worse
Grid outages at this level are extremely rare, last time this happened was 2003. Could be some kind of attack
I'd expect a system that complicated and that critical to be have elaborate extensive monitoring that could at the very least immediately identify the failure. Moreover, I'd expect it automatically isolate faults and reconfigure before a complete grid failure. The implications are that someone with knowledge of the grid system could sabotage it during start of a war or large scale terrorist attack completely neutering a response. If it was an attack them there's no question the grid operators failed. Attacks must be presumed as possible and all attack surfaces designed to self defend.
Well it somewhat did isolate the fault
That's how the rest of the EU is still enjoying the wall juices
Realistically those points of failures are public knowledge because it's cheaper not to resolve them.
or the cost would be on a party that doesn't have to deal with the fallout
"what spending money on infrastructure that's not broken??? what are they doing with my tax monies!!!11111" yea pretty much
Unfortunately we don't have a uscbs kinda yt channel to analyze such things all day long.
Probably one of the best things to find on accident
precious fluids

This is what vacuous gibberish looks like. Global warming did it.
That is impenetrable gibberish
Sounds like something out of Star Trek
Maybe they can use the deflector shield? Reverse the ion flux?
did they ask ChatGPT?
they mean the lines were wobbling at frequencies that unsettled the magical french electrons at which point they went on strike
Agitating for a 30 hour work week
Work?
Duty Free
looks at QF
well yea, where else would he shop?
Kinda makes TUMI sense
That's not how any of this works sorry
1k for a suitcase o.0
Obviously
Whale is cheaper right?
Politicians know that ONLY social spending get votes .. spending on infrastructure ... people think that's free and just expect it to always work. I guarantee with 100% certainty, there are documented warnings from engineers that this will happen someday, and what should be done to prevent it. Exactly none of those guys are surprised at all. But they'll be blamed for the failure by the politicians who ignred their warnings.
Maybe wait for a post mortem before pointing fingers
I've seen this over and over throughout my life. Large scale infrastructure failure are always preventable but prevention costs and politics drives spending Q.E.D.
should do away with currency
If everything is free, we will have nothing
We treated a bunch of these failures in EE. It is always a combination of several things going wrong simultaneously
Preventable... Depends. With hindsight everything is preventable
Hindsight isn't necessary ... the engineers tasked with keeping old crap running will tell you exactly the conditions to cause a failure, where it's likely to fail, and what the failure cascade will look like.
you will have only what you need
From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs...
Has kind of a ring to it
Who decides what I need? You? Who decide what you need? You? Communism has never worked and never will because humans are inherently greedy and self serving. It's a survival skill. Its why as physically frail species we've survived and dominated the planet
Sounds good on paper ... never worked
in a system as complex as this the failure cascade has more possible combinations than there are atoms in the universe
someone never watched star trek
And you have a proof of that conjecture?
that would require some math, but let's say you have 10 components and each can fail in a unique way leading to a blackout. That's 10! = 3628800 different ways already.
you implying the same pole gets hit and broken every few years and is just simply rebuilt? that sounds sus
our grids are underground so we never have these issues lol
thats not every few years
they actually did tests to see what the average speed a vehicle has to be at to even snap a wooden power pole.. think it was like 40-50mph lol
yea but something that keeps happening dosen't get simply rebuilt
they would have changed it after the second or 3rd time
yes, when I did community service when I was younger having to relocate one of those poles because of common issues was one of the jobs lol
for us everything except HV is under ground. So only those big distribution towers
Less than 5% of the High Voltage grid (>200kV) is underground
underground is not an option in many places as well
not going to go blasting through solid rock just to run cables
Those big towers are the main arteries for power transmission. At Very High voltages underground transmission becomes very expensive and technically challenging
The EU Transmission grid (>220kV)
you guys have any experience with combining a light bulb with a switch to create single light entity?
What's the colours?
can't right now. need to replace the switch with a dimmer switch and smart bulb with dumb bulb 🤦
but until then I need to combine it so i can control it with the same widget button.
yea, but doesn't that limit me to one brightness per scene?
not gonna lie, never used groups nor scenes
that's for #1284966582375813201
the switch is the button for the bulb.
it's kinda backwards.
i know i should have started with a dimmer on the wall XD
nah. i'll figure it out.
right now the switch isn't happy. i think i was messing arround with something to much to the point z2m starter throwing errors related to the switch 😅
the switch IS one of the controls 😛
i'm disapointed with the resin prints i did recently
i've borrowed anycubic resin printer from a frined and printed a bottle cap for my soda stream bottles...
the printed cap snapped instantly.
i did not expect the resin to be so brittle.
back to my prusa a guess 😅
don't have cf, but pla go brrrr as we speak 😏
i only hope the initial layers in the middle will be watertight
if not, i'll have to bump the extrusion multiplier a bit and try again
maybe play with the temps some.
ok, HAOS rebooted, back to figuring out the groups thing.
why not print proper petg for drinking things
gets the advantage off being much more stable to the real world
I'm not sure. I opened brand new, never used spool of PETG and it printer much more britle than this PLA for some reason.
sounds like its not dry enough but even then it should print fine if you dont mind the non glossy finish
it wont die within weeks when exposed to uv outdoors
i need a tutor but i don't know anyone who's printing among my friends other than the resin guy.
there is this great 3d printing discord which has a ton of 3d printing people and they know stuff somewhat well
it's possible it's not dry enough, but the bag was still "vacuum sealed" with a desican inside.
as in it was tightly wrapped on the spool before i cut it open and let the air in.
it should be alright then unless the seal somehow wasnt sealing
on the other hand, this PLA is awesome. it's one of the marble colored ones.
i print everything with it and the prints come out strong and tough.
pla looks great but its not really stable to warm or sunny environments unfortunately
the silk ones even less but those also arent as stable
Thingiverse
The holder / wall mount for RODRET smart switch/remote from Ikea for better stability. The original magnetic holder is great for horizontal surfaces but is not strong enough for vertical ones. An accidental bump from a side causes the whole remote to fall off the wall and hit the ground hard.I designed this holder to improve the stability of the ...
many cool things to print ^^
i printed this and the first iteration was a bit lose so i re-printed. the left over print was on my desk for weeks and every time i was fidgeting i was trying to break it. failed every time 😛
the original magnetic mount is a bit weak, the whole thing was falling of the wall if you slap it the wrong way.
couldn't find any decent one for the 2 button version do i designed one for myself.
Wasn't me this time

hm... i think i need to visit #1284966582375813201 . when i group the things i get errors
It was Rob actually lol.
I already miss my NodeRed 😢
nodered
If I learn how to do everything I was doing in it, but using the built in functionality of HA, then I won't miss it. But until then, I feel like my hands are tied.
I completely do not fit into the definition of regular HA user. I do to much weird stuff.
i dont see you missing the poor implementation of message based programming flows any time soon over the template capable automations homeassistant offers
the ui just isnt yet optimal for visibility but its being worked on
What about talking to ZigBee stuff using functionality that's not implemented in HA?
Now that I think about it, i might use the Z2M to send commands manually.
Not sure if i can create a button for that anywhere tho.
ofc you can

@lone dagger the crazy chicks are hard to control.
Gotta start cooping them up.

I have no response to this that isn't bordering on political.
Like this ?
why latency so bad
....satellite?
Wow! Such speed! All that to download all that content from Norway!
the bits have to be thawed at the end
Yep the 2 shows currently running.
Surprisingly list of big movies filmed in Norway, didn't know about a few of these
Anything is cheaper than LA I guess
I know plenty of movies with a short clip of amsterdam are made in a studio
Hamsterdam is very close to duckstad. In the dutch donald duck.
Yep Virtual Wall with Unreal engine. That's the goto now.
hey no picking on norway till i am present
Pick what?
it's a year-round sport
Pick a card
Sir, you have to specify MMDDYYYY when it comes to Norway specific things.
Mmddyyyy in norway?
wut? they prefer DD/MM/YYYY
or sometimes they just base day off if they are offered orange soda in school
What a Monday, HA VM stopped responding for the very 1st time. Sucks to delay the wine.
have you considered turning it off and on again
for more helpful it tricks and daily update follow my linkedin
New hardware old USB Stick LOL.
That's the kind of advice I'd expect from somebody who already started on the wine. Or just a smartass. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference 🙂
Scary to find out how helpless you get without HA. I need to document where the damn switches are.

why not both
Im sure we can give wine support in this channel?
All day
we need to watch out for qf, sometimes he confused sauce and shrimps for a drink
send us the recorded clips of you freaking out please
Plenty of whine to go around
I honestly didn't know what to do.
i believe it lol
why lites no work?
Next time freak out and make the damn video
are you rambling?
Need mental support rob?
Nothing works. I have no clue what light switch does what. Eye opener for me. Fully automating is kinda scary
let that be a good lesson for you
Took me awhile to figure out my master bath lights 🙂
@tidal bronze is not restorint a backup. So i guess The next . Release ha will have a fail over mechanics.

That was quite funny when I went to Barcelona in December
We had -15c and snowstorm at the time
So I was wearing shorts and tshirt
Meanwhile it was 19c in Barcelona and locals were wearing Canada goose and mittens
Some ladies of the night came up to me in three layers of insulation clothing and a woolen hat asking if I was lonely

They are all inside in the netherlands. Unless you want low quality.
Apparently the dedicated LPR camera is pretty good too. Friend of mine showed me a picture from one of his sites, zoomed right in, middle of the night, perfect recognition at >30m
It's completely blind to anything else though (tuned for shining IR at highly reflective things, license plates here are retroreflective), so you need another camera if you want visible-light capture
any ideas for an easy way for my partner to open and close the blinds via a device in the middle of the night w/o turning the phone screen on?
thinking..vibration sensor on window so we can knock..but afraid that if someone upstairs bangs the floor it will inadvertantly trigger.
a button of some sort
Why's no-one else thought of that? 😮
i have two curtains, though.
Two buttons... 🤯
in the middle of the night fumbling between two buttons or a remote with 4 buttons isn't ideal.
But knocking on the window is 😂

Button controlling both blinds?
could have 1 button but have different press modes. single press vs double press for example
stuff like that never passes the wife approval factor. then you have to remember which cardinal direction hits which window with how many taps, etc.
and a button controlling both blinds introduces logic question, like what if one curtain is open and one is closed.
is there a zigbee mind reader yet?
No but we do have support channels.
you could go voice control too
not ideal for bedtime in a shared space.
you need to narrow down exactly what functionality you need and what limitations you have then probably start a thread in #1284966353798697001 with recommendation tag
anyone install roller shades?
Seems like my shades take too much force to roll up
But also these big balls throughout the chain
you could make a gearing system to get some mechanical advantage
No not really
Already invested 100$ for two of these
Probably better to just yank it manually
welp, sadly my pi just cant handle ha - or honestly, maybe python apps in general bc i notice some lag with glances too
Which one do you have
4b with 2 gb ram
Probably too little yes
@gritty linden Please do not cross post. Read the channel description, post it and wait for folks to respond. Crossposting wastes people's time as they're unaware of the help you're getting elsewhere.
right now i remember why i wanted HA - bc it let me put apple tv in google home 😆
welp, all good
not like its really that important to control
anyone know where i can find the default homekit bridge yaml file?
likely in #1284966582375813201
What's everyone's plan once discord forces facial scanning?
to not do it
No.
What's everyone's plan once <company> does <completely unlikely thing>?
Yep. I'm seeing all sorts of wild claims since the latest rumours of Discord going public.
People are dumb. Sooooo dumb.
Well, yea
Nobody in their right mind expected discord to be a permanent home
It's a company
Maybe people will end up giving matrix a chance... biggest flaw imo is that they push (pushed? dunno, haven't looked at matrix for a few years now) for E2E so hard. E2E is cool and all, but frankly useless when the sole purpose of having the tool is leading public discussions about stuff. Add to that how their particular E2E implementation just gets in the way constantly and the average user is already done with the platform before they've written the first message
Maybe people will end up giving matrix a chance
People are. Those people who are tech-savvy enough to do so. Which is a tiny minority of the overall online community.
Even in here, where we all like to tinker with our smart homes, most people aren't actually that savvy.
But how many people would really use another platform? It is like WhatsApp - many will keep using it, as long as the majority of their contacts do as well.
Discord is weird. it was never advertise to host the shit that it does today
like this server.. support? in discord?
discord started off aiming soly for gaming
Good Day all. I am quite new to HA.. but I have a strange question.. I can get to the HA screen using my mobile browser on adnroid , but when I use Chrome I het "400: Bad Request" - have tried it in Opera and Edge too..
For me it depends on the larger communities
I have 0 ties to discord outside 2-3 communities to : 💩 post in
Does this make you angry? @clear ferry
Every time I see something interesting and it's on some matrix solution I just close the tab and go somewhere else. It's worse enough that it wants me to have an account but it's terrible that it offers a million options on which clients to use
Remember web forums where you could just read the content without anything on your passing through. Guess that's too easy
As easy as clicking a single link to join a new server?
Even with signing up you just sign up to discord. No need to decide on which origin you are most likely to loose your account to
oh hey, Bsky is down.. good thing it's distributed.. OH WAIT
Yeah, it turns out that this distributed malarkey is just overcomplicating stuff without providing tangible benefits.
that's the joke.. all of Bsky is on one site :P
Oh. so it's just Twitter?
litterally.. it was originally started as an engine replacement within Twitter
Ah
they split off when the sale was happening. In theory, you can actually run your own instance and have things be federated, but it's not something you can run on a Pi
In theory, you can actually run your own instance and have things be federated
Yeah, I thought the big selling point was supposed to be the federation... but that's always going to fall down. There have already been issues with people getting cut off from the wider network with these federated platforms, right?
Like when they try to cut off rogue admins or toxic communities.
there's a bit of that. It's not a huge deal, but there are some more popular instances on Fedi that have gotten themselves blacklisted, or their admins are overly agressive in blacklisting everyone else
sound whale moment hehe
It took me way too long to figure out you couldn't set it up from the web, but you needed to from an app
Only place to create an account, the app, who does that?
You need an account these days ? :0
Did someone here automate a robotic lawn mower using HA? Curious to see how the automations are set up
Feet are now mowed. What next?
I have one of those. 🤣
Power is mostly restored in Spain but they still don't know what happened. That almost guarantees it will happen again. How much refrigeranted or frozen food was lost. I'd avoid eating out for a while in case some restaurants decided to use food that was not keep at proper storage temperature
you don't know what you're talking about. Full post mortem of a more recent large failure took months https://eepublicdownloads.blob.core.windows.net/public-cdn-container/clean-documents/Publications/2024/entso-e_incident_report_240621_250225_02.pdf
My fridge/freezer can hold things at a good temperature for over a day without power
Mostly I've only had power go out for a day or so before, so no longer tests
Whst kind of fridge/freezer do you have ?
Though my area hits over 100 for a good part of the year
It's still in an ac building that'll at least start at a cooler temperature inside
LG with the dual doors and freezer drawers
Kinda middle of the road, not the cheapest but really not close to the most expensive
Bzzzzzt not true. I had the compressor fail in a 2 year old high-end LG fail and in hours the freezer was soggy mess.
I lost power for 12 hours due to a hurricane, it was fine
We had ice cubes with pennies on them and everything to make sure it was all frozen through
modern fridges will last considerably longer because they have much better insulation
that's also why they so little power consumption
I now monitor my freezers and had short power outage of about an hour and watched the temperature climb. There is no way your freezer food was below safe temperature for 12 hours. The USDA says 4 hours
Unless we have the exact same fridge or freezer, your data won't mean anything for my hardware
So that's nice, but cool I Guess, my freezer and chest freezer blow the USDA out of the water
That's pretty sweet
I doubt there much difference. ALL appliances must now meet energy standards and insulation is the most effective way to do that
Post-mortem of something more recent than... yesterday?
Maybe my aging eyes deceive me but the report you linked to says it's months old.
that was my point
it could be as simple as 'branch fell on line', but that doesn't explain what caused the blackout that followed
The summary of that failure ... ALL preventable
that's not what I said
Back to my earlier statement ... spending is driven by politics, not best practice . How often do you hear politicians promise more spending to maintain existing infrastructure? Only after major failures and after they blame someday else.
I'm literally quoting your words:
of a more recent large failure
We don't do politics here...
More recent, in the context of failures that have a post mortem
It's not a big list
Failures do happen. That's why you design for them and montor for them. Cost? I wonder if anybody died or was seriously injured due this power collapse? How much sales revenue and VAT was lost? What is the cost of the food and other material like drugs that must be maintained at low temperatures?
You don't design for failures. You design for failure rate. It is impossible to avoid failure entirely, but you can use probabilistic calculations to ensure the chance of total failure like this is small. Clearly something happened that was unaccounted for
Just about everything in life is politics at some level
Sure. So just about everything can stay out of here.
My statements are apolitical as they don't advocate for or against any specific philosophy
Yes you do design for failure. Some designs are very simple., like fuses
It's funny how many people think systems design is easy... until they have to design a system.
Just MOAR electrons
That's why engineers exist ... they do the mostly unappreciated hard work of keeping civilization operating. I'm sure a large amount of the grid infrastrure is old and hasn't been upgraded to keep pace with increased electrification . And, I'm sure engineers told the politicians it was needed but as I said previously infrastructure maintenance spending doesn't get votes .
There's not an unlimited amount of resources (time, money, talent) to throw at every issue. Nothing is perfect, nor will it ever be. Not sure why you're up in arms about it.
As they say: shit happens.
Yeah, that's dumb 🫠
You should have a look at <absolutely useless 163649 standard development> open source project for untapped resources ;P
That's enough ego to fuel probably four times as many countries as there are now

open source electricity grid, why didn't anybody think about this?
Why? The most critical underpinning of modern civilization is electricity. You just saw what happens when it fails. Without a reliable constant supply of electricity, a lot of us will die. Electricity is no longer luxury, it's an absolute necessity. I'm sure somebody, an engineer, has done a simulation of what happens if electricity is down for various lengths of time. I'll bet it's not pretty.
the investment vs reliability curve is not linear. I am just talking about the NL situation, because that's my expertise. We have a reliability of about 99.995%, the average yearly uptime on any given location. Let's say you can get that to 100%. What does that require? Well, a whole lot more redundancy. Which is extremely expensive, while the gain is very little
that said, failures of this magnitude at the transport level are never supposed to happen. The fact that this morning everything was back up already says a lot about how well prepared they were, those investment paid off
You just saw a 100% electrical failure for about 60 Million people, That is unacceptable Q.E.D.
It clearly is acceptable
great analysis, you should become an engineer too
It happend and reality didn't stop, no people of influence are being tortured. An inconvenience
I'm guessing you weren't one of the 60 million
The lack of torches and pitchforks is a giveaway
The simulations have been done and the results so devasting that they are classified. If wide spread power failure persisted for one week people will begin looting killing each other. Beyond that, it becomes apocalyptic.
As someone in "Hurricane Alley" losing power for even an entire day is not the big deal you are making it out to be. A mostly full chest freezer will keep everything frozen for almost a full 24 hours.
a very interesting case happened recently which caused power to go out at my parents house. Maintenance workers activated an earthing switch, normal procedure. For reasons that would take too long to explain that caused a short circuit. Short circuits happen all the time, that's why you have breakers. However the breaker failed because of earlier maintenance work, which caused the overhanging cable to expand due to thermal stress, which caused an AC -> DC short circuit with the overhead line of the train below. Which then blew up the transformer station 😅
Yeah, after bad thunderstorms, which are basically a daily occurrence here, our area may have as many as 25k people without power. Just in my area. You just deal with it. It isn't fun, but it's not the apocalypse, either.
Just get a straw, AND SUCK IT THE F UP. 🤣
Chest freezers are better than what most people have in their homes. You are prepared
There's a big difference of losing power for a day every month
And losing power for a day or two after not having such an event for years
I can thankfully count the number of hours roughly I've lost power the last 30 years
My dad has a small 25year old gas powered generator, but it's only really big enough to keep their fridge running. We don't have one. We just make do. The worst part about losing power where I live is the fact that it usually is a summertime thing. And when it happens, it's followed by a severely hot humid few days. Whee still nothing to go burn down the neighborhood for...
Oi, I use YT shorts

I always hear this crap from the same generation that willingly plants themselves in front of a box of pretty pictures called a TV and sits there crosseyed and drooling for several hours a day. At least the ones on their phones are interacting with somethingz instead of just sitting there vegetating.
Doesn't make it less true
At least the ones on their phones are interacting with something
I don't think the ADHD swiping through an endless stream of 3-second clips counts as 'interaction'.
Smartphones are damaging. We're seeing people lose the ability to focus for long periods.
im glad we banned phones in class rooms so we can at least undo some of the damage tiktok and YT shorts have done
That would assume that schools still work adequately but well, it's something at least
The interesting part is that the bans have had no demonstrable effect. Banning them for just a few hours a day doesn't help when they can use them for the other 18-20 hours.
It's a generational thing, not a 'don't allow phones in school' thing.
They can't forbid generations in school tho :P
One way to protect your frozen food is to use CO2 discharge to cool the freezer. That's what labs use to keep even their -70C freezers cold during a power failure if they don't have generators for 48 hours or longer depending on the size of the CO2 tank, Liquid N2 discharge can get even colder
what do you mean by generational thing?
That's a shame 😄
Which part is unclear? It's a problem that relates to a generation.
are you saying phone usage relates to a specific generation?
Phone usage? No. Phones have been commonplace in the home for almost a hundred years.
Exactly. Unlimited access to endless streams of nonsense, and all the ill effects of social media. And all in their formative years when their health (both physical and mental) needs particular care.
Come here Watson, you need to see this new dance on TikTok...
At that age, I was out exploring the countryside on my bike with friends. Not TikToking.
(not that I turned out much better...)
people of all generations have access to that stuff now. It is not a generational problem
Eh the kids I know are sending it down a mountain on double black diamonds
in fact the people around me have have phone consumption issues are all 50+ lol
Are you deliberately ignoring half of my post?
And all in their formative years
Teenagers are going through all kinds of physical and neurological changes. Fucking around with their minds and discouraging them from sports isn't clever.
Then you know some of the better ones. They still exist.
I was curious if anyone here has two locations they manage with Home Assistant. I have another property I'd like to control through Home Assistant for basic access control (remote gate opening), lighting automation, and similar tasks. I'm considering setting up a separate VLAN for all the IoT devices and linking them via a VPN to my main IoT network.
However, I'd also like to add users to the Home Assistant server who shouldn't have access to any of the devices.
Is this even possible with Home Assistant?
*Not looking for support on how, just wondering if this possible.
Yeah, location matters. I grew up in a fairly small town with great access to lots of small villages/rivers/canals.
what is the problem you are referring to then? the addiction, or the consequences? Clearly the addiction is not limited to a single generation. I don't think the consquences are clear enough
Access control is limited and I haven't heard of any plans to change that. If it matters to you, HA probably isn't the tool you're after. For more detail... start a support thread.
No. Users have access to devices. Just not to system settings.
does tiktok or YT shorts shorten your attention span to the point you can't sit in a classroom anymore?
The consequences are really fucking clear. Kids are performing worse than ever in school, and have higher rates of ADHD and depression. There are a ton of studies showing high correlation between phones and those things.
You've gotta really bury your head deep in the sand to pretend that's not an issue.
There are thoughts about more granular permissions. But no promises or timeframe set.
I'm not aware of any study that can exclusively relate that to a particular generation.
I don't know what kind of logic happens (or doesn't) in your mind but smartphones affecting school performance can only be a recent thing. They didn't exist for older generations.
Hell, there will be folk in here that didn't even have a computer lab in their school.
you make vague statements, I ask for clarification, then you get mad. Hilarious
No-one's mad here.
The more interesting thing is whether they replaced something or lead to entirely new phenomena
Though social networks likely did the latter
What do you mean by replacing something?
This
Oh. You can see that clearly in restaurants. Families don't talk to each other over meals now because the kids have their iPads out instead.
Random longshot. My local non-profit hacker space could use a new events calendar system. We have a bunch of volunteers that need to create events with RSVP support, and have some of the events get posted on an internal accessible page, while some of them should get exposed on our public website with pretty pictures and a map. Anyone know of a good open source tool that can do this at a minimum.
Of course. You can set up multiple servers, and access them remotely, and set up different users for each of them. But this is really a #1284966540617449515 question, tbh
Or just do mqtt sattelite servers per site

give computers the ability to have opinions and sarcasm is the immediate, expected result
I'd start using AI more if it was more sarcastic
I used AI to make comparisons with my plan to save the world and lots of religions. Very handy so you dont read every religious book.
Laugh what you want i know religion is as real as fire burns
Oke anyway i got a plan where it does not matter if you believe or not. (Well it does matter but not in what "we" see as reality)
How can I make it so that information is saved forever?

ITS A COUPE, FFS! rages incoherently
Just because they stopped making the Accord coupe in 2017 doesn't mean they don't still exist! cries in coupe
I looked for weeks before finding one.. and I had to settle for the auto V6, because the manual v6 is crazy rare to be found for sale. Everyone who has one is keeping it!
Mopar crap would be on the 3rd transmission by now...
Everyone loves to hate the Accord...
Hey now my first car was an accord with pop up headlights that my grandparents gave me. Thing was sweet.
We had two Accords when I was in HS and college
The 6th gen was the best, but this 7th gen 2006 is comfortable, has 240hp, which ain't bad for its time.
I thought my 85 Accord was awesome at the time
I'm sure it was. The 85 Honda I had was a FourTraxx 125. 🙂
Ha mine was an 85 too
99.9% sure we’ve talked about this at length haha
Yes, but it bears repeating
This is a 95 Honda, how dare you!
Excuse you?!
I just couldn't help referencing a really dumb movie
Where a characters Honda gets hit by a golf ball off a roof and he yells that out at them
Oh I got the year wrong, dangit
Also surprised it was in giphy form
Still is
Well, the engine blew up, so perhaps an equivalent 85 Accord is still awesome
@static schooner back in the day
I think my 95 Accord was the first one I got with VTEC
Back then, everyone laughed at the "Honda bros" talking up VTEC. Now, every manufacturer has their own version of it.
Toyota and GM both call it VVT. Variable Valve Timing. Ford calls it VCT. Variable Cam(shaft) Timing, Subaru calls it AVCS.
Nissan: N-VTC
"This automation would look bad out of context"
When I bought my 1995 Accord, the sales people were just calling it an emissions feature, not really perf
It is kinda both. So at idle and low power requirements, it only opens the valves so far. But when you exceed a certain RPM and speed, it switches lobes on the camshaft(s) to give you more power. This saving fuel, and having fewer emissions when just driving normally, while still having more power available.
It's basically the same thing as the old school muscle cars having a bigger camshaft... Without the drawbacks of having poor performance in regular driving. That "lope" that is so desirable? Yeah, that's the car struggling to stay running at an idle....
VTEC and all its clones, basically give you a bigger camshaft, but only when it can actually be useful, such as at higher RPMs and when more fuel is available for combustion.
A straight camshaft has problems at both extremes, either running rich at low power, and just throwing unburned gasoline out the exhaust, or running lean at the top end, which could cause engine knocking.
That's what Honda engineers were looking to mitigate when they came up with VTEC.
Sorry if I went too into the weeds, but I find the whole thing fascinating. 😂
thanks for the background!
all of my automations enabled themselves after updating, interesting
definitely wasn't expecting an old alarm to fire like that
speaking of driving nobody understands this hand signal
swear to god you pull one of these there's a 10% chance someone randomly stops because they think you're hailing them
I used hand signals riding a bike earlier today
That one?
I just extend my arm right instead of that signal

well that is the weirdest thing I've seen in a while
mounting a NFS share from one of my systems to the other
I can read inside one folder, but none of the others
so the share is fine, but the permissions are weird, all other directories just appear empty

nfs 3 or 4? with nfs 4 you suddenly get kerberos authentications and far better granularity on permissions. and that can bite in unexpected ways 😄
ftp is the real deal
I do like a simple protocol, but both FTP Active and Passive are a bit 😒
NFS: Most Wanted is the best
Underground 2
Then there's ftps and SFTP which are completely different protocols
SFTP I am happy to manage, FTPS is the worst of all worlds
Anyone else using powerline ethernet adapters for anything? I absolutely hate that I am, but I guess I'm impressed that it's been working as well as it has. I wanted to put an AP in our garage for some cameras and an ESPHome garage door opener and it's been working great. Because of the layout (and because we rent), there's no way to run a proper wired backhaul and a wireless bridge also wouldn't work
We're on the second floor and the (detached) garage is, of course, on the first floor. Between the interior of our place and the garage is 3 block walls and a metal staircase lol
I have been, but they severely impacted my VDSL connection.
I had to throttle the powerline speed to 100 MBit/s and still had frequent VDSL desyncs.
