No, raising the decibel will just make it louder, you want to raise the pitch a semi-tone so that the keyboard plays in C# rather than C. Better get on that, you've only got an hour and 20 minutes before your captors kill you.

it doesn't have to be that fancy to attract state level threat actors. sometimes being a cell phone and internet service provider is enough.
i have even seen a newspaper attacked by someone with that kind of resources. an attack that should have gone completely unnoticed if not for a very suspicious journalist who was the target.

Yeah, I've fixed military grade stuff across the internet multiple times, but usually if it is military it is airgapped anyway, only reason to leave the house tbh

that journalist got attacked because he was one of the people working on wikileaks content before it went public. back when wikileaks actually had real journalists combing through everything and redacting information that could endanger people. someone with really deep pockets wanted to know what was in there before it got released. the base was kept physically airgapped so they could not have succeeded with our copy at least

  1. cost - the food scrap bin gets fetched biweekly, and the unsorted weekly. but only once per month is included in the monthly renovation fee. if you have your bins out more than that it costs extra. rfid tags on the bins automatically register each time they are hooked on the truck.
  2. optics - if every house were to have 4 bins outside.
  3. space - some side streets don't get serviced and have to bring their bins to a common spot. and that would become quite unwieldy
  4. laziness - walking out to the street with every garbage bag? nope.

red rock
unreal crystal
#

I just figured out today that a bunch of automations that I was making are mostly pointless.

#

I was trying to minimize how much power I pulled from the grid. I pay 21 cents per kWh and they give me 9 cents per kWh.

#

However, what I realized today is that they don't settle until the end of the month.

#

Which means until then, it's a 1:1 ratio.

#

Which means that it doesn't really matter what my gross grid use is at all, only net at the end of the month.

#

Which means just charge my car whenver i *(& want, instead of waiting for sunlight.

robust flicker
#

Maybe it's a different plan?

#

My power provider has several different plans, including flat rate billing, time advantage, energy advantage, etc. They have different rates and different surcharge fees for usage types.

unreal crystal
#

I'm in Ohio

primal laurel
#

So you lose 21-9=12 cents per kWh

unreal crystal
#

Only at the end of the month

ocean oar
#

I think what they're describing is they just realised it's net billing.
So it's only the difference in imports/exports at the end of the month they're paying.

#

Basically using the power grid as a battery; borrow theirs now, and return it later.

unreal crystal
#

If it settled instantly or every hour you'd want to minimize use. But it's more like a credit card. As long as you pay off the energy by the end of the month you don't pay any extra interest or fees.

primal laurel

@static schoonerdidn't you say at one point you disassemble your LR3 at one point and had to figure out how the magnets went back in?

#

Greetings friends. Can I do automated operations with the assistant with Prowlarr or Radarr etc. What is their actual function on the home assistant as an add-on?

static schooner

I set up a camera there to prove that the other cat is going

static schooner

It just gets stuck and doesn't move freely

forest edge

whats crazy is the ammonia the urine produces will rust metal anywhere on the units and yet they don't account for that with nothing lol

static schooner
#

I took the whole sensor apart and I think the legs on the foot are splayed out and getting stuck

#

I don't know for sure that hats what's causing the weight issues, it I've also had this unit report that the weight sensors were active for too long and I need to reset the robot

forest edge
#

didn't see anything weird when you took apart the sensor?

#

I haven't had to mess with mine yet. not sure whats involved. only looked at them while installed

#

yea but refering to the sensor itself, not the foot

static schooner
#

Nothing out there of the ordinary. Some of the epoxy where the wires are attached was worn away

#

It's just a white load cell and the foot has some legs that clip onto it from behind and a post that presses on it

#

Pretty simple. The other three feet move freely

forest edge
#

well as I stated above the ammonia fumes from the urine wreck havic on all kinds of crap on those units. I would suggest taking the weight out of the liner and rustoleum that the next time you deep clean lol

Well, I bit the bullet, moved my HA instance to a VM hosted on proxmox. Generally the directions worked, there's a helper script that makes it pretty easy. The biggest issue I found was the USB passthrough / permissions. There's no one way/solution, but find the right device and pass it through as the USB port itself, then be sure to find the permissions and set them to allow the world to write to it the device file.
lsusb will tell you which USB device. and in proxmox you will see the device name detected .

I was able to make more of the servics I wanted to collapse on to this system be done in LXC containers, rather than add-ons in HA for things like Plex.

So, I now have 2 machines collapsed onto one, and a LOT of breathing room. I probably could put the whole workload on that N100 with 16GB of RAM. I don't think I'm up for another build right now though.

stuck anchor
#

for the rest - get a domain name you like. then decide if you want to host other services at cloud companies or at home. if at home, check if your isp offers static ip address for your router.

if you cannot get a static ip then use something like duckdns. then set up the services you want to access at home as CNAME records in your own domain that point to the duckdns name. set up port forwarding in your home router redirecting ports 80 and 443 to a proxy that uses the hostname in the url to redirect internally.

that's pretty much it

solar zealot

I had it running in Kubernetes for a few years, then found Fastmail and decided to pay them to do the thing.

Oh hi blobwave

We’re proposing to stop supporting two installation methods officially:

  • Home Assistant Core (running directly in a Python environment)
  • Home Assistant Supervised (running the full stack on your own operating system)

Additionally, we’re planning to discontinue official support for two older architectures:

  • i386 (32-bit x86)
  • armhf (32-bit ARM hard float)

Want to share thoughts before it’s official? Read more about it and let us know 👇

But I like supervised! Though I guess I can just go haos

I don't like it
I like it even less in containers

Makes them behave in messy ways

S6 is kinda ok, but also has some corner cases

Oh nvm don't mind if it's not officially supported, I wouldn't want to inflict my supervised setup on someone to get help

I'd just nuke and pave (like I've done in the past)

holy hell taking apart the LR3 globe fully and putting it back together is a pain

static schooner
#

it really is. the liner is a pain in the neck to seat properly

forest edge
#

well I had thought it coming apart in 4 quadrants would make it easier to deal with. boy was i wrong lol

#

safe to say this will be the last time that thing ever gets taken apart

static schooner
#

the seam between the two halves causes me trouble. It tends to get caught on the sliding standoffs and cause an over torque error

forest edge
#

ea it has one gliding tab, it needs more on both sides

#

to align them and keep them level

static schooner
#

I've been trying to fix it in various different ways by applying zipper lube to the textured track and putting packing tape over the seams

#

it sorta works, but it's not a great design

forest edge
#

could epoxy your own added guide on both halfs if you ever have to take apart again

#

the thing is has is just a a tab that slides between two pieces of plastic

static schooner
#

Plus, the bonnet can get deformed if you don't get all the tabs into the right slots, which can also cause the globe to bind up because two of the sliding posts are on the bonnet

#

took me forever to figure out why it was sometimes binding up and stopping mid-cycle

#

I have none of those issues with the LR4

forest edge
#

yea that globe is easy

static schooner
#

I really like the handle they added to pull it out

forest edge
#

i can get gross

static schooner
#

it's a bit more important on the 4 because the round portal in the front prevents you from just grabbing the globe from there

#

it would be more awkward

#

the LR4 with the dodgy weight sensors has stopped recording any weight at all after I removed and reinstalled the sensors, so I guess it's time to call support

forest edge
#

thats weird

#

wonder if there is some kind of code to hard reset those sensors

Hey guys!

I have a quick question for zigbee users -

I have a sonoff usb dongle as a coordinator and a bunch of sonoff sensors connected to it. All works fine, couple sensors are outside so the LQI and RSSI aren't great.

Today I added a sonoff smart zigbee socket and it acts as a router. The thing is, that the socket is right next to the actual main coordinator. I see in ZHA some path of some sensors have switched from the coordinator to the socket router and the LQI and RSSI became almost perfect (255 and -35 dBm) on the ones that connected to the socket router including the sensors that are outdoors

Is it really possible that the socket router somehow extends the signal so much more than the dongle coordinator?

Question for people using Z2M... is there a way to "freeze" the map? I switched to a Sonoff dongle from deCONZ and the Z2M map is essentially unusable. With deCONZ you could move nodes around and they would stay where you left 'em. Z2M's map is constantly bouncing all over...
Or... am I using it wrong? User error? If so, how are you using it?

Hi all - sorry if this has been asked ad nauseum. Is there a bot/way to search the channels? I'm trying to work out if anyone has some good guides on setting up a Waveshare 7" touchscreen ESP32-S3 - want to use LCARS eventually but for now I'm just looking for initial setup/connection to HASSIO etc. Currently it just boots into LVGL v8 Demo dashboard and unsure if I should reflash it with something like I have my house light switches with Tasmota... or where to begin really.

# swift prism it is only 2gb but wont running it in a container lower performance

are you running from sd card? if so, swapping/paging will really kill performance. sd cards are really bad at random i/o and anything not using their preferred block size. a2 class cards are better than others, but not good.

i have been running my haos on a pi 4b 24/7 for years. it's a 4gb model and with a bunch of addons i see it hovering around 2gb used. i can imagine a 2gb model getting to be problematic.

back when i also ran node red i migrated my os from sd card to a good memory stick first, and got a huge performance boost. then i bought a cheap usb to sata cable and migrated to a 128gb ssd and saw even better performance. now i have deleted node red as ha has gotten good enough on its own over the years but i will keep it running from ssd.

i like having my home automation running completely standalone. i plug it directly into my isp router to make sure no errors elsewhere in my home network affect automations.

just make sure that if you run from sd card you never need to use it 😄

swift prism

well later I will disable swap then ig

And everything else that reads/writes from your SD card. Then you'll be safe.

Or just do the sane thing... use an NUC.

a pi is a perfectly fine nuc as long as you get it off that sd card. sd cards suck as boot drives
