I really wanna swap my bedroom lightswitch for a dimmer switch. Problem is, it's a no neutral switch, and my only option is kinda expensive for my broke butt ...

Yeah. I guess.

As an aside, I've found that my cheap sengled wifi bulbs actually can get super dim if you set the brightness using 0-255 instead of 1%-100% .. my sengled porch lights seem to work all the way down to 4/255....

Whereas with percentages, at 1% it could've been set from anywhere around 10 to 30, depending how it felt. 🀣

Except relays don't fit behind all my switches. This house is a converted mobile home. Some added on parts are standard thickness walls, but not the master bedroom.

#

It was originally just an old single wide trailer, but has had several walls knocked out and additions added, plus a roof over the entire thing, so the crawlspace between the ceiling and the roof is basically inaccessible as well. It really limits what one can do to the interior. :/

deft pewter
robust flicker

Nah, it was cheap because the people selling it had no clue what it was worth, and didn't use an agent. The place just 3 or 4 houses down from us is listed for 200k.

Ours is admittedly, a slightly smaller lot, but not by that much. Theirs** is 1.6ac and ours is 1.4ac (ugh, autocorrect is a @#$# sometimes)

deft pewter
#

Yeah, sometimes a bit of market knowledge and a good agent can make a huge difference.

Not quite the same difference in price but another property on the same street as us sold at almost the same time for about 15% more than the one we bought.

Same plot size. Same overall building style (ours had some remodelling done). Ours was probably done up a bit nicer overall (new kitchen, well-decorated, etc).

#

We couldn't have afforded more, so we're really lucky that whoever bought the other one missed out on this. Otherwise, we probably would've been outbid.

It seems like for Frigate, cat on furniture == person detected, and I'm afraid that it's making me complacent when I get a notification that there's a person in my family room while I'm away

cat on chair, cat on back of couch, all people

forest edge

why you have multiple sensors that all have to be active in order to be notifed, "someone is eating your food in your family room"

yes

dawn badge

lunar remnant
lunar remnant
dawn badge
#

yeah these are great points. unless your in very specific circumstances having it now is not good

lunar remnant
#

The real problem IMO is when people discover it and decide the best course of action is to just board/skim over it with plaster and leave it. In the short term that minimises exposure, but the result is that it's even less obvious in future for someone else

#

You see that advice ALL the time in DIY and home renovation communities - it's vaguely sensible in the short term but SO selfish and dangerous long term

#

I really hate how selfish those people are, they're literally hiding a death trap to save themself a few bucks today

dawn badge
#

yeah, the "make it someone elses problem" crowd

#

you see that alot in high turn over jobs. "looks good for a while then crashes" means "i look good and by the time it crashes its someone elses fault"

lunar remnant
#

Yup exactly. I'd have more sympathy if they at least left it more visible where at least someone in future has a chance of noticing eg the artex walls or the texture ceiling and thinking "Oh, that could be asbestos, I better check"

But when they skim over it to make it look like fresh plaster and physically hide the problem.... wtf is wrong with these people?

dawn badge
#

do you blame the person that asked the workmen to do it or the workmen that did it because they wanted to get paid

sage cedar
#

Both

dawn badge
#

yeah definetly an arguement for that

lunar remnant
#

Agreed, definitely both. Although if you held a gun to my head and said I had to pin it on one then I'd say the owner since they're the one who's responsible for the property

sage cedar
#

One was an asshole enough to ask for it to be done, the other was a shithead enough not to care as long they got paid for it.

lunar remnant
#

There should be some legal requirement to report it at the time when it's discovered, so that it shows up in the paperwork when you buy the house, with a huge penalty for failure to disclose when made aware

#

Again, I really can't stress this enough: Mesothelioma is a truly HORRIBLE way to die

#

I'd probably take it over rabies, ebola, or radiation poisoning but that's about it and at least those are fairly quick... days or weeks rather than slow agonising months or years

dawn badge
#

I guess the issue becomes "were you trained to recognise it?"

sage cedar
#

We have asbestos based chips in our attic floor for insulation. It was disclosed and no one tried to cover it up (not my house, I rent... roommate is the home owner). Research says just don't disturb it, ok. But I'd like to wire in ethernet and power to the main living area from above.... pfft.

#

And having it replaced via "qualified" options is financially/logistically non optional, so we won't.

dawn badge
#

yeah maybe that kind of work should be subsidised to encourage its removal.

umbral cliff

Hey everyone, I assume the answer will be HA, and that there are support channels, but this is more about a recommendation based on experience, I think HA has gotten good enough for me to be able to configure it either way πŸ˜‰

Are there general recommendatiosn for what to use as a border gateway router in my situation given my existing hardware:

I have an existing Google Smart Display (and a few Google smart speakers) over which I have currently set up my matter network, consisting of: Tado thermostats (currently their own matter network with the tado router/bridge), wild assortment of Matter-over-thread light bulbs, hue lights with their matter integration over their bridge and a lot of random other bits and pieces that don't play into it as they are just for playhing around, but stuff from Aqara, Bosch, etc.etc. Similar number of things on Matter-over-wifi (sonoff switches, motion sensors, ...), and lastly some zigbee sensors.

I recently moved and got myself a ZBT-1 after I got annoyed with my first and second gen Sonoff Zigbee stick, and am running HAOS on a Pi5 right now. But given the move, I'm open to setting everything up from scratch.

my recipe for testing drives is to first overwrite the whole drive using dd from /dev/zero. blocks that have been partially written because of a power outage or similar will give s.m.a.r.t errors even if the disk is physically ok. then run a long smart check. and then look at the smart logs.

if a modern-ish s-ata drive starts reporting block errors back to the os instead of remapping it internally it is definitely time to retire it

i pasted that for the mosquitto_passwd line and for the python script and for the home assistant mqtt integration

ocean oar
#

(for non-ambiguity, I meant when you ran mosquito_passwd, if you used single quotes rather than double it wouldn't have expanded the $)

astral slate
#

the python script was the one that didn't work until i removed the $2 from the password in my config

#

so i know the working password does NOT include the $2

#

i have moved on to check if i can get a discord ping when my hob is nearly done OR doesn't have a time set and is going for more than 5 minutes xD

i like fiddling in shell but i also like automating

have you gotten the arc working with conjunction to the Coral on anything, or using each for their own purposes? I'd like to get my arc A750 working to decode / encode for frigate, while the Coral handles inferences. Also wondering if that same split principle can be applied to immich, openwebui, etc. Any advice?

runic cape
#

Heating/climate control has got to be the least gimmicky smart feature out there, right

solar zealot
#

Don't think so

runic cape
#

I do smart home things for fun, but I realize that very little of this is actually meaningfully improving my life

solar zealot
#

You may be doing it wrong then

static schooner
#

I used to have a pattern of walking around the house turning lights on and off that seems insane to me now

solar zealot
#

Things giving you insights into usage or taking over mundane tasks are a great investment into smart devices

#

The toaster writing you AI messages on the other hand probably isnt

dawn badge
runic cape
#

I liked getting insights into temp and humidity, but other than that?

solar zealot
#

Consumable insights are of great use to me

runic cape
#

What are consumable insights

solar zealot
#

Electricity, Gas, Water... Those kinda things

#

It's the easiest way to become aware of what you are doing, seeing patterns visual, being able to optimize them as wanted

#

With the addition to rather easily spot faults

dawn badge
#

being able to see problems before they are catastrophic is good

solar zealot
#

It's really not about having app control over your lights, at least in my mind

runic cape
#

I will say, detecting one leak will quickly pay for the whole set-up

primal laurel
#

Still too much human in the loop if you ask me. The real future is fully automated of all the big consumers

solar zealot
#

Most if them already are

#

Like heating has been pretty much solved for at least three decades

primal laurel
#

Not solved πŸ˜…

#

Optimization of that part is my day job lol

solar zealot
#

I'm really not sure what there would be to optimize

primal laurel
#

We've had this conversation already

#

I remember it

solar zealot
#

Yes

runic cape
#

Heating up when you're coming home, surely?

solar zealot
#

It's much more complicated like that and involves many details about the house on which strategy may work best

#

Yet once set up you don't really need to adjust anything

static schooner
primal laurel
#

Most systems nowadays use weather compensation with PID control

runic cape
#

I don't really need insights into my gas and water usage and such, if there is a leak yes that's great to know, but it doesn't really change my life otherwise

primal laurel
#

This part is too low level for home assistant anyway

#

It's not fit for the job

runic cape
#

If leak, flash bedroom lights

solar zealot
#

It's good to know but probably not critical if you do maintenance

runic cape
#

For warnings of inefficient heating I can just check my bill, splurging habits I would know if I had them

primal laurel
#

Hard to read from your bill. Depends strongly on the weather

solar zealot
#

Sounds just like the gambling meme ;D

primal laurel
#

Need an installer who knows what they're doing

shy plinth
#

wouldn't it be nice to know before it hits your bill? especially if it's something accidental or broken

primal laurel
#

In the UK you now have heat geek who teach / train based on the science

#

It's working very well

runic cape
#

Maybe, but the chances seem so low and the damages of not knowing also

solar zealot
#

It's not a question about if but when it will happen

runic cape
#

Also, my new (smart) radiator valves warn when a window is detected to be open

primal laurel
#

Is it? Could be thousands of euros over a few years. I NL gas for heating is 70% of your total energy consumption. A lot to gain there

shy plinth
#

this conversation did remind me i had a monitoring plug doing nothing so i swapped it onto my garage fridge. so it helped me at least

solar zealot
#

Wohooo

runic cape
#

Over a few years, but the smart stuff only protects from having to wait for the bill

primal laurel
runic cape
#

Inefficient how?

primal laurel
#

It's a bit much to explain, heat geek made a video on it. Basically the cold rooms get heat from the hotter rooms and so the heating system has to work much harder to keep the temp up in that single room

runic cape
#

How could that possibly be worse than wasting my heat on the cold rooms directly

primal laurel
#

Because it has to run at higher flow temp which is generally inefficient

runic cape
#

already watching B)

primal laurel
#

It's true for boilers but it's magnitudes worse for heat pumps

runic cape
#

Too bad I can't take 2 identical months and try both approaches

#

and compare

At the moment I’m in the stage with home assistant where the basics are set up, but I don’t know what I don’t know which messes with my usual strategy of β€˜google it until I’ve found some instructions’. Anyone got a favourite resource (site, YouTube series, etc.) for increasing my familiarity and understanding, giving examples, demoing the YAML stuff, and generally giving me a launching off point so I can do the things myself?

#

I don’t want to put a support request in for every little thing I don’t know how to do yet, when learning some more first would probably fix most of my problems.

It also applies to boilers in some degree

More so if you have condensing

Well I really have no easy way to find out, smart features or no, so I will stick with my gamble

To me 21 seems ridiculously warm btw

#

Well maybe not ridiculous but. try wearing clothes instead

primal laurel
#

One of the houses I monitor is at 25 all day long

runic cape

I think though, unironically, my main room is being heated mainly by my PC 😬 which is not ideal

#

Is it one of those sweat lodges?

primal laurel

Probably old people

runic cape

or are they just growing tomatoes in there

primal laurel

Old people homes have crazy high temperatures

the room i am in most of the time is pretty toasty by most peoples standards really

yes

That's high

runic cape

primal laurel

runic cape

Do you have floor heating?

primal laurel

Nope. I rent on the second floor and the landlord is a cheapskate

That is by the way the second least gimmicky thing that my smart home does: monitoring PC power usage

primal laurel

I got 5950x

runic cape
#

I've ALWAYS wanted to know and now I finally do

#

I can also confirm that the PC I built to be very power efficient indeed is

#

I feel like my heating system should be in the loop on this somehow lol

primal laurel
#

PCs should consume no power at all. Just stupid inefficiency

runic cape
#

it's a lot like changing weather

eh even our brains use power and heat up when we think harder

I feel like we're not escaping that one

runic cape

I prefer to refer to it as performing computationally expensive tasks

dawn badge
#

πŸ™‚

runic cape
#

Actually, I should check to see how compiling compares

#

that should be interesting, but no graphics card involved so probably still less

dawn badge
#

yeah probably depends on your cpu

#

i have been thinking about adding some more tracking to my rack to monitor equipment seperatly

#

could split this up a bit πŸ˜›

#

torn between a bunch of smart plugs or to get/make a PDU with monitoring built in

unborn merlin
dawn badge
#

yeah there's various options. i was thinking about it as a project but then got a bit decision stunlocked and shelved it for now

#

currently no UPS either. so if/when redoing the power setup i would probably want to add UPS at the same time too

runic cape
#

It would be nice to have a monitor on the strip and a monitor on the PC plug and get the peripherals by subtracting

runic cape
#

Oh yeah, I had this thought: what if I just overspecced the radiators in the heated zones

I say "just" but I realize that would be a bit of an investment
