mini pc's generate more of it
havent had an emmc die on me
Me neither
Not always true, especily when the Pi5 enters the chat.
and have bad cooling, even active
lol that thing would die in my barn as well
lmao whats the power draw of that?
ngl considering this the rk3588 should keep itself warm in the winter
"up to" 25w with enough USB accessories connected.
Intel has NUCs with 9w power envelopes now, so that's kinda interesting
hmm i was able to draw 20-25W hogging npu, gpu and cpu at 100% on the rk3588 with 1 nvme
HA green does like 2W or something
rock 5b idles at that
the fydetab duo with its 500nit screen 4.5-5w
thats damn bright btw
quite a good screen 1440p almost 1 to 1 with the mbp
So the Magic Box I am looking for with 4G via M2, onboard storage, nice case, decent compute and memory doesn't exist? Maybe I'll just build it myself then
price?
@primal laurel look at this
magic black box
What is it
if it weren't so damn expensive
Mekotronics R58X-4G
Uhh I am still debating. Maybe 200?
has emmc
250USD for 4GB ram 32GB emmc with the 4g module
why does it start at 32GB? lol
ur asking the wrong person, i can ask them tho
Interesting
Let me guess, also sold out
Pretty standard size
not for that application
32GB is solid
8GB would be perfectly fine
It's 32gb storage, not memory
No it's fine if I can buy one via the shop
you should be able to
they are really good ngl
tho one issue, your only OS option is armbian or bredos
take a look at the r58x-pro too btw
Mekotronics
it has the mini pcie, sold without the 4g module but it has aslot for the hdd
so u can upgrade
What do you think of minisforum?
good but expensive, dpeneds on your needs
r58x is also expensive dont get me wrong
Holy crap that's expensive for what you get.
true
My Proxmox nodes (each has a 6 core i5, 64GB RAM, 2TB NVMe storage, and quad-port PCIe NIC) cost about that much to assemble.
Granted, that's with the base system being a used mini PC
Also super glad to have all those redundant network links. We got a new kitten recently, and she found her way into the server rack and chewed up a bunch of ethernet cables. Nothing went down in spite of several cables being severed.
lmfao
Chaos Monkey? Nah, we got Chaos Kitten.
got like 5 pcs of that kind
each one with its personality
tho all sharing the same quirks
The PCs or the cats? lol
This is the troublemaker that chewed up all my cables
She also likes to chew up cardboard boxes
aww
sounds like these girl's mom
kittens and young cats can be very destructive
Doesn't help that she's too smart for her own good, and gets bored easily...
thats why you get more than one
We have a second cat. Unfortunately, one gets 3:00 AM zoomies, and the other sleeps through the night.
Kitten mischief hour
here its zoomies 24/7
theres atleast one cat with batteries to keep the others awake
Oof, that sounds like a lot to handle. lol
strays that hang out?
not really but kinda
most of them just hang out they dont live with us
but are "ours" cus they come and cuddle
the all white one just comes to eat black one comes to cuddle
well its good they found themselves a slave. too many cats out there without any slaves
may wanna think about getting them fixed lol
13 will turn into 40 thousand in no time
dw working on that
females are all neutered
Is there any way to make my desktop audio stream to all of my hass media players?
do you want to stream everything or a particular thing?
honestly any audio at all would be awesome
like for example say I was watching a football game on my desktop, I could have all my media players playing the game audio throughout the house so if I run to the bathroom I can still hear
that's what I am kinda going for
if you could create a stream you could add it as a radio station in music assistant which could then push it out to the devices
maybe icecast and some virtual sound devices or something. no idea what kind of delay you would get though
I know HA users often over-index in Australia, but how many of us here are preparing for Tropical Cyclone Alfred? My UPS' only last about 45 minutes for all my stack, so pray for @thick dragon. Will be interesting to see if my outdoor cameras survive.
小猫
Doesn't look all that 子
Is that the Chinese equivalent of www?
Hahaha
I know a bit of Japanese, but no Chiense
Hhh is the pinyin
Oh yea right the characters are similar
Some are the same right
人
Person human?
For 漢字 Japan just lifted the Chiense ones. So for the most part they are still equivalent
There's some deviation, but for the most part Japanese uses the Chinese letters (for one of the 3 writing systems that are mixed in any real text)
Wdym by lifted? Removed?
copied
I remember watching a video on how Chinese/Japanese were trying to guess the meaning of some texts/sentences between the 2 languages
diugital signage machines with rs485 built in tend to do taht 😄
its "enterprise" thus price multiplier

In this video I see how well native speakers of Chinese can read Japanese without ever having studied it. The results are incredibly interesting!
Special thanks to: Alfred,...
yea, I'm still in the process of learning all of those funky letters
but the syllables ones are easy
Looks quite difficult
Time to bite the mods and give them rabies if the motion goes through
It's less that it's difficult, and more that there's a lot
Don't they reckon you should be able to read about 2000 of them to be proficient? And many can have different readings depending on how they're combined. It's a nutty language, at least the written side.
The grammar and phonetics are about the easiest though, so listening/speaking isn't too bad. It's the reading/writing that sucks.
2.8k is the expected number, yea
The grammer gets composed quite a bit. It's not that easy to hear either
though that's also partially due to me not being used to having to pay attention to pitch accent
Pitch? In Japanese? I thought it was pretty similar to English where they just have intonation for questions and emphasis. As I remember (from many, many years ago), they don't even stress syllables, which is maybe the hardest part of listening - the words all seem to run together when they speak fast 🫠
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_pitch_accent though it has some dialect component to it
Japanese pitch accent is a feature of the Japanese language that distinguishes words by accenting particular morae in most Japanese dialects. The nature and location of the accent for a given word may vary between dialects. For instance, the word for "river" is [ka.waꜜ] in the Tokyo dialect, with the accent on the second mora, but in the Kansai...
I'd also say the short/normal/long timing for vowels is more prevalent than in at least German and English
Ah, I didn't study for long enough to pick up on dialects 😄 The timing thing though... it's all literal. They spell things with short or long vowels, and that's how you say them.
oh yea, that's spelled out properly
but it's not something I'm used to having to pay attention to as much
Fair enough. Yeah, it's another element to listen out for
Stuff like 禁煙 (kinen) is fun too. I think most non-native speakers would pronounce that as two syllables based on the romaji. It's 4 😅
Is that a map of all Japanese dialects. That are not many
It's a specific feature that's different depending on dialect. So not trying to map out dialects themselves
One per settlement?
you would be suprized
Two per settlement?
Today I found out you can use emojis as wifi name
The world will never be the same again
did all the tuya devices just explode?
I hope so
Which causes issues for PS5s, or at least it used to, probably patched out. I've dealt with too many bad UIs to use anything but alnum in SSIDs now
where does that come up?
What's wrong with QR?
other than people figuring out how to get it to run malicious shit?
That it's not a clickable link?
qr code are lickable
Everything is lickable - at least once.
qr is dumb
QR is fab. The error tolerance is massive, so it doesn't matter if half the image is destroyed.
this is crazy https://youtu.be/5i3Y14TNqCI?si=eqHYIrVzhhqH5lZa
For the first time in more than two decades Mexico overtook China as the largest importer of goods to the U.S.
Mexican goods imported to the U.S. totaled $475 billion in 2023 about $20 billion higher than the previous year. Feuling that trend are simmering trade tensions between Beijing and Washington, an effort to bring U.S. imports closer to ...
Ah, the image started on a computer screen. My bad.
I don't know about underused. I see them everywhere.
So many restaurants use them now post-lockdown as a way to bring up digital menus (and even order online to your table). You just scan the QR on your table.
yea, but if you insist on some bullcrap digital menu, just give me something to tap. preferably with a data:// URL
yea? they can hunger
I love them. The less interaction with people, the better 😂
This might be a cultural thing. In the UK, there aren't many complaints about them. But we don't like talking to each other.
"Perimeter guns arming in 5... 4... 3..."
nah, add a motorized spray bottle with cold water
There's a restaurant I no longer eat at because they didn't support the analogue way of covid tracking
What was the analogue way?
Fill out contact form
It gets stored for 2 weeks
If anyone got the 'rona and mentions the place as a location they visited in the last week they go through the stash and call everyone
For one place we just said they should call us either way
Since there was barely a day where no colleagues went there 😂
That sounds like an awful process, sorry 😁 The bluetooth stuff was way better, once it was implemented. Automations all the way.
Hi. I had some Yeelight lightbulbs in the past and now I got Tapo lightbulbs. I highly dislike being forced into closed ecosystem and proprietary apps. I just found out that home assistant exists and I'll be trying it soon.
I have an idea for a paint-like interface for controling a big amount of lightbulbs in a home - using home assistant as a backend will make a lot of sense imo. Does that sound like something that has beed tried before?
Because if this already exist then great. I wouldn't need to work on this 😁
a paint-like interface
What does this mean?
Something that allows me to build a floor plan of my house - where the light are.
Then you would pick light color and brightness - this would be simillar to picking color in paint.
Then you swipe with brush on the floor plan and apply light change to all lights that were touched
🤷
that exists: https://experiencelovelace.github.io/ha-floorplan/
Isnt there a tool to just scan the floor with a iphone or something?
It's 3D! Looks nice. I'll be testing this for sure. Thanks
Lidar mapping stuff? Probably... but I think fda0 is asking more about how they'd then interact with it.
For more info... #1284965988642590891 is the place to ask
there's some genAI stuff that can do it from pictures only. No clue how you would get that into HA though
this winter storm has caused my electricity to be unable to decide whether to stay on or off.. currently its going with "off"
it's been 5 or so years since we last lost power here
All the other places I've lived, rarely a power outage. South KC, however, not so much
infrastructure built in and around grandview is ancient. surprised the homes there still aren't knob and tube
Dang, I think my power outages never make it to the months between
And if you include blips and such, it doesn't make it to weeks either, more like days
You guys lose power?
I remember when I was young, my mum having a stash of candles ready for power cuts because they were fairly common (maybe a few a year, lasting no more than a couple of hours).
I can't remember the last one I experienced as an adult.
Lol my entire state almost went dark
I had friends without power for over a week
last time some HV AC cable fell onto the train overhead lines so there was an AC->DC short circuit and the transformer station blew up
Oof
Friends don't let friends deregulate power companies
When it happens here, it seems to just be isolated houses with shitty electrics. Which means I still have to work but I have to work while listening to their frigging house alarms going off.
We have a few stop lights in my neighborhood that short out every time it rains
And go into stop sign blinking red mode
That means no-one has to stop, right?
Lolol if you sat by the light during those times, you would realize that no one stops
Though I guess they run reds even when the light works
(freaking thing changes nice and fast Even, it's not like the light a half mile down the road that'll sit on red for 5 minutes with no cross traffic)
what state?
there are some stoplights here that will prioritize cyclists when it's raining lol
Lol Texas, grid here is the worst in the nation
well i wouldn't say worst...
Also because of idiots in charge, it can't hook up to the national grid for backup
but yea you all had your fair share
How many other states came within a hair of the entire state going dark
Like the cold start generators were down
don't worry your grid is tied into ours. we supported you through that lol
which caused the coal plants to fail lol. And then people blame it on freezing wind turbines, idiots
They didn't winterize despite Texas having a real winter every year
Winterizing costs money though and they wanted to save a buck
Hey, now! Don't call people idiots! ||That's my thing||
I had no idea TX got that cold. Figured it was always cowboying weather.
ps. for those in EU, day ahead market will move to 15 minutes from june onwards. So if you're on a dynamic contract you will get a price per 15 minutes instead of per hour.
Texas is huge.. it's like it's own country spanning between north and south
And people would go out skating on it
Like totally living memory, just everyone forgetting it happens because climate change stopped it
Can you provide a banana for scale
The contrast is incredible
just picture France.. that's the size of Texas lol
a lot is changing on electricity markets because of reneweables. Super interesting (for me)
Houston Texas is a city so large it takes multiple hours on the highway to go from end to end
Lol
me and buddy drove from KC to Houston in a day, then drove down to Galveston
talk about flattening your ass
I actually liked texas when I went. Great street racing scene down there back then
Ugh I'm so glad I didn't live on that street anymore, idiots went racing down it basically nightly
Police still don't care how fast you go on a highway as long as you're not stupid
I think the average speed on some of those is 15-20 over the limit
That sounds like the main road through my residential estate at school dropoff time... 😬
in houston there are all those long ass highways that just circle around the city
610 or something I think was one of them we did some racing on
Average speed, lol, not top speed
Ah not surface streets, that's way more sane to go on the highways
Yeah I've seen people racing on 610 a few times, it is just a giant loop that has fustercluck traffic
buddy went to a vocational school for racing mechanics so we were in deep while down there
can't remember where his apartment was
Texas was the first time I ate at a Jack in the Box as well
remember that being popular down there
That sounds like the main road through my residential estate at school dropoff time... 😬
Is that like a subdivision? 🙂
I wish 😄 Nah... some places in the UK are referred to as an 'estate', usually when they're a wealthier part of a bigger town/village. It's not an estate in the feudal/regal sense.
For context, the properties on this estate probably have grounds at least 4-5x larger than the village it adjoins.
I'm often thrown off by people calling a station wagon an "estate"
"estate on wheels"
well you could live in it
I'ma go figure out how big the largest plot on the estate is. Some are mahooooosive. Like footballer mansion size.
aka I live in my car
Picked a random big one from Google Maps... it gives the area as 14k m2 (or 151k ft2 if you prefer freedom units).
that's like half the netherlands
I was going to say, that garden looked like half the netherlands. Flat, featureless, boring 😄
god tier infrastructure?
And a typical plot in the village... 87m2 😅
It's a yin-yang thing, they were originally a wagon for going from the train station to your country estate
holy crap the asus rtx 5090 is 3k
And worse than the 4090
Fucking AI has gotten to GPUs now too. Don't make them work stuff out, just ask them to guess.
thankfully there isn't anything on the horizon yet gaming wise to even remotely consider buying anything above a 3000 series
Yup. I only upgraded from 2060 to 3080 because I had too many pixels to power on my new monitor, else I'd probably still be rocking that.
The 2060 really didn't like the ultrawide 😂
Oh, no. Brother used to be the good guys... https://www.techspot.com/news/107022-brother-printers-quietly-sabotaging-third-party-toner-firmware.html
people still buy printers?
Some people, yeah. Not everything is digital yet.
We just moved house and it was crazy how much stuff they wanted printed and signed in ink, when you can sign electronically
Had to get family to print for us.
just buy an old laser printer and keep it for life lol
I just had to get a document notarized, which required that I print it
Kitty can barely see over his fur
I mean... that's what people thought they were doing with Brother printers. It's the firmware update that borked it, and a lot of people will just apply any update they're told to.
just get a letterpress and make your own documents https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hV5FfqdZubM
What kind of exercise do you get?
Oh, I print about 100 pages a day
Also a very satisfying youtube channel to watch
I would definitely put too much ink on that thing
And it'd probably brick up if you didn't use the manufacturer's ink too
Gutenberg's Own
I had my sister print out my passport application paperwork at her work (a hospital) instead of going to like the UPS Store or something. 🤣
Oh, I don't feel bad.
I need to print things like once a year at most.

I print almost daily. Kids asks for a robot dinosaur for colouring so I ask Gemini to create and then I print. Love having a laser printer and so do the kids.
every time i have a new cozy life device to add to home assistant i forget how to add it... i'm getting mad 😄
and every time i post here my brain got illuminated and i remember the solution
so sorry about the spam 😄 love you all
need to refresh cozy devices in google home app
Write it down
i mean i can use through home assistant via sdk command to google
cannot properly integrate on Home Assistant
i do not see any device or entity from cozy life. I just contol through Google home integration
so very bad, but still something
is their a way to outright exclude local IPs from getting banned? It happends very often my device gets banned when switching to or from the local network
if somone have better ideas i'm open ❤️
Post over in #1284966540617449515
327 for a full dog seems low
its a pomeranian.. its 80% hair, 19% yipyipyip, and 1% dog
The beauty of a laser printer is toner doesn't really dry out or clog and it's always just ready to print when you need it
Good thing we spent all that time developing flying cars

Fold it in half and eat it like a taco
It's how you eat a NY slice.
meh..
sure you like drinking grease
best pizza I ever had was a chicago style deepdish shrimp pizza
Park behind the police station.
I work at a law firm... the number old school attorneys who want paper is insane as is the amount that is produced. 🌲 📰 😭
this is the states.. not some poor country.. I been almost everywhere here
even made the mistake of seeing canada... shudder
Want a hug?
therapy after visting there
I'm never gonna believe you have left Missouri
Can't you hand them a stack of iPads :D
I was thinking Alabama
That would explain alot, alas it is not the correct state
that's ok. I believe norwegians and the dutch are actually the same people
they wish!!!
It would actually be the most polarized countries, one is below sea level, the other is mostly mountains
Smiffwille
i bet you wished you lived in smithville
wonder if canada is better or worse than 25+ years ago
I dunno, they went from being nice to being mean
like a kicked dog
when i visited pot wasn't rampant everywhere
you went to being a friend to being a traitor
oh wait, no politics
LOL you weren't looking then, been surrounded by it all my life. Hell now I can walk down the street smoking one and it's all good. Not that I would, kids and all.
well back then it was in the rural areas but not as much in the cities
Canada is great, it's like the best bits of America without the.. y'know: Americans
thats what everyone says about everyone else
That's still true
didn't use to be
Haha when I was there it was in the middle of a drought and there was barely any water
I didn't care too much from what I saw there eons ago but I liked the people I played games with from there but I wasn't lying.. went from nice to mean.. like the pot was sour or something lol
But was a bit of a flying visit as I went straight from there to the airport to head home, didn't experience the town
Maybe they just got tired of your shit @forest edge
Wouldn't be the only ones
not towards me
Big country though, not all cities are created equal. I avoid cities as a rule though, too busy for my tastes.
I've heard nightmare stories about shipping costs to Canada, which sounds like a pain in the neck
similar to complaints from Australians
Oddly only from the US (esp. now), HA Green and Voice PE cost me double the list price by the time they reached my door.
If not more... f'n customs.
buy with an importer
Never tried that
Can't cross the border unfortunately, feds say I'm a bad person for smoking weed. Well getting caught for it anyways. I have sent friends over for me though, just not always an option.
just be glad not everything is treated as if each state was an actual seperate country
It kinda seems like it
to a point
but would be one hell of a headache if it actually was
decoy would probably get deported lol
Utah is likely where
although kansas would take you
Salt Lake City itself is suprisingly liberal
it is.. I enjoyed visiting last year
the rest of the state I just drive through as quickly as possible (mostly because you don't go slow on the salt flats)
@peak slate here you go lol https://youtu.be/RIPoAvA2XJ0?si=QUoRltnyayVA3KN9
The company's silent and orderless batteries turn on instantly when the electricity goes down, powering your home for up to four days depending on usage.
Is there a voice assistant setup that works on something like an old mini pc?
oh this is fun.. there's a single customer at $work that's pulling 340Gbps from us right now :D
Which channel for monthly livestream chat?
This is atx doing updates
YouTube.
So which feature can we complain about this time
Lol it'll be a bit before I can watch something today, but I assume it's kinda dumb and makes fun of the Texas grid
no it's about a much cheaper way to handle the power outs
Maybe there will be an afterstream talk in https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284965764759027883 - but no promises.
I wouldn't be surprised if the state dosen't do some kind of program with tat company
Whole home battery backups back feeding the grid?
It's funny to me how extremely Dutch all this is. Like, a lot of the YouTubers talking about this have clear Dutch accents, Frenck is apparently Dutch. We're just a country of mildly moist nerds, aren't we?
Not going to happen
... Nah okay, we're good at building dykes. Not that mildly-moist.
it charges during the night and back feeds during the peak but they say it will keep a home powered for 4 days during an outage
I've done the math for my house, it would take a significant investment in batteries just to keep my fridge going for a few days
Let alone my whole home
And my fridge is decently efficient
What does your fridge consume
so stop leaving the door open
Well most of that is just extreme battery prices
if mo had a decent solar or whole home battery program that stacked with the federal thing I would have jumped on that
Minus it's highly explosive nature
We looked into solar at one point for backup and one of the wife's requests was enough battery for a week of the fridge assuming we turned off the rest of the house and it was cloudy af for the solar
we haven't lost power here in awhile but still
I haven't lost power in about 24 months or so
It was gone for 3h that time though
Seriously long
American infrastructure moment
Total power outages the last 20 years are probably somewhere around 8h total
So the 3h was a large chunk of it
and yet you talk so much shit...
They just couldn't recover from you powering down your servers for maintenance
Took the whole country offline smh
I made the country phase distribution lop sided you say
Government probably paying for a diesel generator in his backyard
Not in Texas at least
sure hope this was the last snow we get till next winter
After stream talk in https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284965764759027883

the party in the alley has the cocaine
Missed the party coding my new ai selected images of all my stuff. And use a random image as screensaver for my tabelt
stuff? as in he-man collectables?
just don't say "junk"
Just wanted to pop in, say hi, 👋
And let everyone know I'm happily crunching along, grinding my teeth and throwing parties at every little success and failure I've been having since starting this journey a few days ago.
Thank you for coming to my Ted talk of longest sentences evaaar.
I finished a nice project. Let ollama browse trough all my nextcloud pictures and copy pritty ones to a share i can use as screensaver for my tablet and i gona set my random image camera to that
HomeAssistant and Frigate on a J5005 CPU (with a Coral TPU for Frigate).... think the J5005 has enough power for both?
I'm currently running HA on a Pi 3B but it's really struggling to keep up
probably depends on your camera count, a 3b is gunna start to struggle these days yeah
if you want to ask anything further then probably best move over to #1284966353798697001 though
Thanks, I don't need tons of info was just looking for some thoughts for people familiar with that kind of machine to see whether it was worth trying. Worst case scenario if it doesn't work I'll grab a second mini PC, but it's always nice to see if anyone says "I've tried that, it didn't work"
i set up an n150 mini pc with a coral tpu running proxmox to run HA and frigate recently. only 1 camera currently but that works. the J5005 is limited to less ram though i think
How much RAM are you using with HA + 1 camera?
I'm only expecting to have 4, maybe 5 cameras max
hello gang, I just upgraded to 2025.3 and was trying to test HomeAssist Voice Assistant streaming responses from my local Ollama instance and I don't think it is working?
Is there something I need to do to enable streaming responses?
streaming responces is only in text currently not as voice output
right on, that is how I am testing it.
maybe it is kicking out the reply really fast? I am using phi4-mini on a 4090?
feels like "wait a bit.... total response"
the frigate lxc is using 2gb
the ha VM usually drifts between 2-3 unless i am up to something.
J5005 is limited to 8gb i think (at least on paper) so you might struggle with a few cameras
it might just be quick after the first bit. i am not sure though. you probably want to start a thread in #1284966582375813201 for more info though
How about CPU usage?
Seems manageable then as long as I just don't go above 8GB RAM with the cameras, thanks
if you already have the hardware then its worth a go. if you are going to buy then i would consider something with more ram
Yeah I already have it, picked it up for £30 to learn how to use Proxmox so may as well put it to some actual use when it's sitting there with Proxmox already setup
I could use my home server (lots of RAM, VERY old CPU) or a more powerful PC I have lying around (24GB RAM, 5th or 6th gen i5) but the home server isn't currently 24/7 to reduce power consumption and obviously my old PC wouldn't be any less power hungry
give it a go and see how it turns out
Is migrating as simple as "create backup, download backup, move sonoff zigbee USB dongle, upload backup"?
homelabbers - what distro do you run your homelab on?
I use Proxmox
it’s based on Debian but has a nice web UI and plenty of community scripts to make managing it easy
proxmox
the stuff on top of proxmox is various things but i do use ubuntu quite often
thats how i have my HA mini pc set up. vm for haos and debian lxc for docker (for frigate)
my other proxmox servers are a bit different. have various vms in strange setups.
proxmox is perfect for homelab though as allows you to quickly spin up a new machine with any OS you want
Yeah Proxmox is great
I use unRAID for NAS + Docker, sometimes a VM or two for tinkering - but most VMs are Proxmox for me now
If Proxmox handled Docker containers like unRAID does it would be perfect - the community store and way unRAID deals with Docker is fantastic for people who don't want to get too stuck into the technical side of Docker
Look into CasaOS in a VM or LXC
Runtipi and UmbrelOS are other options
Im aware but Proxmox allows you to the flexibility to run docker inside an LXC or VM and other stuff aswell
i dislike unraid (havent actually used it... but in concept)
ZimaOS is basically CasaOS but as a whole OS but it feels very incomplete
unraid to me is basically "i kinda like the idea of having a server but don't actually want to do server stuff so ill pay to not do it instead of learning"
this is just my opinion and to be fair I am sure its a great product to use
lol, i was on unraid docker before all the nicities were really in place
so it was just a UI to setup the arguments into the docker run commands, and i kinda always stuck with that method
still enjoy the nice things it adds around that, tying it to storage for apps that need STORAGE and having auto start settings
CasaOS is great but has some bugs that made me switch to Dockge for docker. Main issue I had (not really a bug) was that the App Store apps have to manually be updated whenever the dev releases a new version
meaning if the App Store GitHub repo maintainer doesn’t maintain updates the app is out of date
Wish it would pull from the devs repos directly. UmbrelOS also does that 😦
unraid imo just makes a good appliance OS
i also have a proxmox server for running all my VMs and have PBS on unraid to store the backups 😄
The only thing I dislike about unRAID is there's no easy way to do something like "take everything off this specific drive so I can change it to ZFS". It's possibe but not simple
yeah, you have to use unbalance for that
which isn't a built in utility (though i do like it, have used it to replace disks in my array a few times, then to move data around for my big ZFS transition)
But yeah unRAID is a great appliance OS, perfect way to phrase it. Less attractive now that it's subscription though - I wish I'd picked up a second license before they switched models
I upgraded my basic license to the top one for "unlimited" drives (IIRC there's still a technical limit but I'll never hit it) but should've bought a second basic one when it was sensibly priced
yeah, i considered doing that too, but i also don't mind throwing some money their way next time i need to
i've certainly gotten my moneys worth out of it in the past..... 12 years since i got my license
way more updates than windows ever has done
my main array is currently just a raid6 mdraid on a ubuntu vm which has the HBA passed through to it.
i am thinking ill go truenas vm + zfs when i next overhaul
i considered truenas scale + zfs, but then kept reducing the complexity of my move until it was just new mobo + cpu + disks for ZFS
i had basically one day of downtime just to get the entire hardware swap done (and a few problems with my install conflicting with UEFI mode
one of my current servers was built with a move to truenas in mind
has lots of ram which i can dedicate to it
I like how easy unRAID is for rebuilds and upgrading drives. One of my 2TB drives just started throwing errors so I pulled it, bought a used 6TB, shoved it in the box and hit the "Data Rebuild" button. Nothing else seems to be able to do that
Like it's literally running right now
truenas can do that but its probably a little less friendly
i went to zfs because i had a disk just silently start corrupting data on unraid
then the monthly parity check would be like "oh thats fine let me just update the parity disk" and wipe away any chance at finding the corruption
also no way to isolate it to a specific disk
Can TrueNAS mix and match drive sizes? But yeah it's the friendliness that does it for me - I like tinkering, but for my main NAS I just want it to work
My other primary NAS is a Synology for the same reason (that just backs up Documents and photos etc for an extra copy)
that was fun
yeah zfs proects against bit rot
nah, thats basically solely the realm of unraid or snapraid + mergerfs
it would limit all drives to the smallest
Yeah that's the problem with XFS on unRAID and why I want to move to per-disk ZFS
Not sure if it's even possible with an existing array though
you can add multiple vdevs to a zfs pool with different drive sizes in the vdevs, but they basically are all separate arrays with their own mirrors/parities
per disk zfs misses the parity though thats used for bitrot protection
though i guess as long as it says "hey this is wrong" and gives you the disk
you can rebuild from parity
Yeah that would be an issue for me
I started out with 2+1+1 , then 2+2+1+1, then I've slowly upgraded to 2+2+6+6 and now 2+6+6+6
I thought per-disk ZFS used ZFS for bitrot protection on each disk, then did parity cross-disk?
AKA Hybrid
little baby drives 😛
bitrot uses the parity iirc
i may be a bit rusty on my zfs knowledge though pun totally intended
i don't know it very well in depth yet
Ah okay, yeah you get snapshots and data compression from ZFS but NOT bitrot protection
That sucks, was hoping I could slowly move the disks across to ZFS and get the best of both worlds
I’m not really sold on Proxmox - why would I need VM management if I never spin up VMs as it is? I don’t have a need for that feature
the flexibility is worth the overhead
Yeah once you go VM it's hard to go back. Being able to just move a VM to another machine is SO convenient
Or snapshot then upgrade then rollback as needed
Saved my butt a few times
Your hardware gets a bit overloaded, just offload a VM. Your server needs more power, just move the VM to a more powerful hardware
etc
haha isn't their pricing "Call our sales team"?
I unfortunately made the mistake of not being born rich and have regretted it ever since
yup, i moved to it last homelab rebuild and dont think i would ever go back unless for a specific reason on a specific machine
Is it not harder to manage your data though if everything lives in a VM?
Say for example I put all of my self hosted services in a docker compose, aren’t there some hurdles to networking I’m gonna be fighting
my main storage arraay is on a HBA which is conected directly to VM via pcie passthrough
network is easy. you can have it set up in many different ways but for the most part you willprobably just have the vm cconnect to your network as if it were a real system
i run my router (OPNSense) on one of my proxmox servers 🙂
Networking nowadays is one of the things I think about least with a VM, bridges Just Work^tm
Oh and being able to just connect to Proxmox in the browser then VNC/SSH direct from there without having to remember addresses etc is NICE
DNS goes janky when you're Tailscale'ing in
Aight time to try my first migration
USB Passthrough of my Sonoff went smoothly I hope
Speaking of which, my poor Raspberry Pi 3B can go back to being a low power VPN server
I assume restoring a backup imports my old user+password?
should do yeah
Okay yeah this is way snappier on the J5005 than the RPi3B
Hopefully it gets rid of my "The interface completely stops responding" issue :p
Yeah seems to have gone pretty smoothly - the Bluetooth integration has thrown a hissy fit because the bluetooth device isn't there now but I wasn't using it anyway
yeah you will have a couple of little things like that moving hardware but its a pretty smooth process
i have some rpi3b+ knocking about with no purpose. too good to chuck but too useless to use
Stick DietPi on it, surprisingly useful as a TailScale/Wireguard target that uses almost no power
I normally leave mine at my mother in law's so I can VPN in for tech support or so Netflix thinks we're on her network every 30 days...
was thinking i could make wyoming sattalites with them but by the time i get the bits to complete them i might as well buy more VPE's
Ah I spoke too soon, Zigbee isn't happy
Any ideas which I should be going for?
Same USB stick, but now being passed through Proxmox on a NUC rather than directly into the RPi3
dont really have purpose but yeah if something like this was to come up i would probably use one
Reboot seemed to fix Zigbee... but now my IKEA hub has changed because I forgot to give it a fixed IP and I can't for the life of me remember how I figured out it's IP last time 😂 FML
Yeah I've tried that, it doesn't advertise its hostname. IIRC I found it via MAC last time
i have a spreadsheet of all my device mac addresses and what ip they should be at 😛
I have ADHD and would never be organised enough to keep up with that 😂 I'd do it once very thoroughly and then ignore it forever
I've found HA is pretty good at discovering things when their IPs change. I've not had to care about any of the IPs in my IoT network in a very long time
Yeah I should probably at least screenshot the fixed IP table occasionall
Ooooh I've updated and suddenly this has a proper integration rather than needing a script! Amazing
Unfortunately this thing is still shit - although I should probably try it direct in Zigbee rather than via SmartLife
Instead of crossposting a bunch, there is a dedicated spot to share this sort of thing: #1284960456880029707
now if only it didn't require yet another dumb ass different service! 🙃
dune series is kind of interesting so far. really long episodes lol
I hadn't considered losing a device and how much the fact that it's missing but still on the zigbee network would drive us insane. I can't decide if I'll be glad or sad when the battery dies in the thing. 🤔
You know you can forcefully remove a Zigbee device?
Yeah, I'd rather find it.
It's taunting me with its data... telling me it's present in this house... but we cannot seem to find it, hah.
what is it? contact sensor?
Aeotec button with temp sensor
between the couch cushions
I might try to narrow down what room it's in with a space heater
you can somewhat use the map to find out what device it's closets too
I'm mostly zwave so I only have a few zigbee devices
we deserve extinction 😄
Hi Gilbert, I'm searching for a similar solution with energi data service. Did you find a solution?
but for a heat pump the best hours are not necessarily the cheapest. And 8 hours may also not be enough. Ideally you let optimization calculate that for you
Thanks!
My aim is to create an automation to heat the water in my heatpump boiler at the best moment. Either when I have overcapacity on my solar system, of then the price of the net is lowest.
Not sure if theres a better place to post this, but Im experiencing an annoying bug in the new update. Was just wondering if anyone else have noticed the same? If I have a vertical stack and go into Code Editor Mode in any of the cards inside the vertical stack it jumps strait back to UI mode as soon as I type anything. I have a screen recording of the problem as well, but not sure if its ok to upload here?
#1284965988642590891 would be the right place for UI questions. If it is a bug indeed, you should report it to the frontend GitHub.
We've been saying that for years
I realized... thrift stores, consignment shops etc are leveraging survivorship bias to your advantage. Cheap poorly made clothing got tossed long ago; to make it onto the sales floor at all, it needs to be built to last
It doesn't work for retirement homes ^^
I run HA as a docker container. To update HA, can I just pull the latest image? Or do I have to pay attention to anything else too (apart from creating a backup first)?
can’t they be used with the RTSP native firmware?
may be hard tracking the files down tho
there’s also a Wyze Bridge GitHub repo that works locally afaik
But do they then turn around and sell it? Usually the crappy stuff gets passed on to homeless charities or recycled/trashed
Hi guys, quick question about the wake on lan + RPC Shutdown switch combo, can you only have one switch configured like this (using wake on lan + RPC)?
Is there a way to automatically parse the automations file and find references to devices and entities that don't exist anymore:?
Thanks. And holy smokes, what a great url www.spook.boo
I may or may not get flamed for this but
-# I like Disturbed's version better.

But what's the best version of sound of silence?
too much hair

Also Disturbed's.
That's just because Dave's voice is magical
Get out of my brain, I was thinking of following that up with "nothing beats his voice".

Korn's version of Another Brick in the Wall
Queensryche did a cover of Welcome To The Machine and made it creepier
Heads up if you have HIKVISION cameras to check your devices.
And as always, a reminder to DISCONNECT THAT SHIT FROM THE INTERNET, no matter what brand it is
great a other google AI bug in the lastest release.
It always sounds like playing a LP record with a warbling motor
Hello everyone. Does anyone know if there is anything like adaptive lighting but for ACs? Where the ac temp changes based on the room temperatures?
Airco is thermostat based. It goes on when the temperature is to high. You can change the value of the thermostat. For more info make a post
But that’s using an external device to do it. I’m looking for something like an automation. I already con control my ACs and have temperature sensors
I’m looking for something like an automation
Then head on over to #1284980040940912641
wooo! my home assistant voices came in!
You will be hearing voices in your home shortly but done be alarmed
I hate the ikea motion sensor
Strange. A new linux panwan of mine picks it up fast. (Still no cli) she is bipolair.
Is having mental issues a linux requirement?
for daily driving it is
Also a requirement to be a US citizen
On a scale of 1 to 5 how angry are your voices?
What does the microphone icon supposed to do in the Home Assistant iOS app? On mine it just toggles to show the text field
Are you talking about the Assist screen? It’s there pulsing blue because it’s listening. When you tap it, it brings up the text box with my icon next to it. If you tap that it goes back to listening.
Interesting, there is no indication it is listening
And then where does that go? How does it process it?
Holy crosspost!
They need to bring back the chat format
The forum post format on discord makes zero sense
No they don't. And please stop crossposting. This channel is not for support.
Oh no!
No idea how it works. Is there some documentation? Google did not explain.
It's funny how you're busy looking at all the posts in all the sections to scold people, but won't actually join the conversation.
Throwing a tantrum will not get you very far.
Well, that’s kind of what a mod is supposed to do.
for being a kernel contributor? I THink so. /s
considering I have to do this to be allowed access to change the font set on my phone, I'm happier without the patches. In cases like this I deliberately block all security updates until the version I'm on not only has a vulnerability found but also publicly exploited
Also on the note of my W10, like 3 days after sending those msgs my BCD file got messed up somehow and I ended up having to spend over a day rebuilding it from scratch to recover my system
so like
you win some you lose a lot
got a gnarly photo of my computer trying and failing to boot tho, managed to mess it up so bad that even flashing a USB with a windows ISO and trying to use it as recovery media wouldn't boot https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/798497447784742923/1346216021253554176/IMG20250303152120.jpg?ex=67cb555e&is=67ca03de&hm=027e89a98b30607bf515b483ea047f93a4be20a27292fd3890447e85ee6b0930&
Windows 10 still has support until October, to be fair
I don't like to stay on old OS's once they stop getting security updates, but it's fine to do so while they still do get updates
Also, to be fair I did mention that I use windows exclusively for occasional gaming - version compatibility issues are really the absolute worst I have to watch out for
My daily driver is kept up to date, it's just not a windows machine
and I finally got a new laptop at work today after the request pending for over 5 months so I don't need to use windows there either anymore, everything's amazing and beautiful
I just use Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC now. Basically all the bloat is stripped out
Linux is more trouble than it’s worth IMO. For servers it’s great though.
I've never managed to daily Linux as a desktop machine, although I can get by with it
I'm most comfortable in Windows but I really hate the BS Microsoft are doing with eg insisting on cloud accounts etc so I find myself using my Macs more and more
All my servers are Linux, though. And weirdly when I use a Mac desktop I have to use a trackpad 😂 spent 15 years using a MacBook and just can't get use to Apple's pointer acceleration with a mouse
hello everyone im a little new to discord and home assistant. but im trying to find some yaml code to get my esp32 cam to write to the sdcard.how would i search all the channels or what channel should i ask my question?
the esphome discord is probably the best place to go
dont see that as an option
has anyone seen any projects of turning google home stuff into something like home assistant voice
More trouble? It just works, best regards part time linux desktop user for 27 years, full time for 10 years
Should 2025.3.0 be available already for HA in docker installations?
Yes
And if it has not popped up in the available updates yet? Just wait? 😄
There's a "check for updates" button in the menu
It prints some weird stuff in the notification box below (6, 7... whatever) and ends up just showing info No updates available
All the other updates coming through, like frigate card updates every day
Docker doesn't auto update
You need to do that manually
Oh really? Just created a post.. https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1347496190530420768
Never thought that it is actual image which changes... moved to docker quite recently, but didn't realize that I haven't had any core updates since 🤔
Would be nice to have some notification in HA anyway that there is now new version available
Okay, updated successfully, only one integration didn't work. 🙂
I guess it was just previous, 2024.2.3
thanks
This is one of the best things about Docker. It gives you a lot of control without assuming you always want the latest version.
One of the many reasons why Docker HA > HAOS 😄
I use regexp:^[0-9]+\.[0-9]+\.[1-9][0-9]*$ for my auto updating 🙂
RegEx is awesome but as they say: if you solve a problem with RegEx, now you have two problems 😄
One of my favourites is the official email RegEx (for RFC5322).
(?:[a-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+(?:\.[a-z0-9!#$%&'*+/=?^_`{|}~-]+)*|"(?:[\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x21\x23-\x5b\x5d-\x7f]|\\[\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x7f])*")@(?:(?:[a-z0-9](?:[a-z0-9-]*[a-z0-9])?\.)+[a-z0-9](?:[a-z0-9-]*[a-z0-9])?|\[(?:(?:(2(5[0-5]|[0-4][0-9])|1[0-9][0-9]|[1-9]?[0-9]))\.){3}(?:(2(5[0-5]|[0-4][0-9])|1[0-9][0-9]|[1-9]?[0-9])|[a-z0-9-]*[a-z0-9]:(?:[\x01-\x08\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x1f\x21-\x5a\x53-\x7f]|\\[\x01-\x09\x0b\x0c\x0e-\x7f])+)\])
I'm calling the police
regex generation, the perfect task for AI. Aint nobody got time for that
lol... as if AI would get it right.
Can't even get the right number of r's in 'strawberry'
iirc the best part about that regex is that it's not quite valid
There's a bug in the 'official' one. The one I posted includes the fix.
it does actually. Just have to give it a set of test cases
Ah. A complete set of test cases that accurately depict all valid and invalid emails. That won't take long to write.
oh right, yours doesn't describe a regular language
Quicker to write a regex by hand than to write the test cases for an AI to do it.
write? Just take it from a database
you're not going to be the first one that needs to parse email adresses...
How do you know that what's in your DB is accurate unless you already have a working regex?
And even assuming that what's in your DB is all valid, you don't know what the pattern ought to reject.
also what even is that suggestion?
just test to make sure your regex is correct?
how are you going to check whether your regex works without proper test cases?
it's the exact same problem
Not even close. You only have positives in your DB. Good test suites include negative tests too.
because the nice part about regex is that it's provable
evidently you use tools like Isabelle/HOL or coq
especially for something funky like that mail regex (and by your construction of your argument why there need to be test cases) you can only do regressin testing, never actually show correctness by testing
AI can generate those for you as well
Based on what? It's just gonna hallucinate unless you give it guard rails.
Given a solid set of test cases, I don't mind letting an agentic LLM flow write code. But if you ask it to write the tests and the code, it's gonna bullshit aaaaaaall the way.
just feed it all possible byte sequences between 0 and 64 bytes and (Client side) limit your input field
yeah you probably want to write the test cases yourself. Which you are going to have to do regardless whether you use an LLM or not. But regex is a perfect use case for an LLM to do. Easy to check whether the output is correct or wrong
And how many test cases do you reckon you need to safely get an LLM to write the RFC5322 pattern?
easy to check whether the generated regex is correct for examples that are easy to come up with 😂
Any time saving you might get from having the LLM write the pattern is going to be insignificant compared to writing the tests by hand.
did you skip your formal methods class?
proving and testing statisfy different goals
But testing a regex (that doesn't have very strict length limits) inherently only tests a tiny bit of the problem space
the simplicity of regular languages is useful exactly because it allows to apply formal methods
how many do you need if you write it by hand? The same amount
it's not so much about the amount of tests, its about your coverage
Holy crap. You're missing the point. Of course the amount of tests doesn't change, because that's the important part that a human needs to do. But you could spend dozens of hours crafting the perfect test suite and only save 5 minutes of writing code by using the LLM for that last part.
If writing the code is already such a small part of development, saving 50% of that time is a tiny time saving across my week.
you think writing the RFC5322 regex took 5 minutes? lol
it wasn't correct, so it really doesn't matter 🤷
So obviously there weren't enough test cases to constrain a generator enough to make that viable
Where did I say it would take 5 minutes? In my (somewhat flippant) example, I mentioned a time saving.
how much time you save is a personal thing. I assume you are quite competent writing regex so for you it will take a lot less time than it would for me. Writing the test cases is no problem however
I'm not competent at all. Which is why I want good tests first.
And being as crap as I am at writing them, I'm surprised how little time LLMs save 😂
That I think is a cat
A hep cat with a soul patch. Probably plays bass in a jazz band
i'm having a heck of a time finding a docker version of https://github.com/hassio-addons/addon-ssh
can anyone point me in the right direction?
container install does not support addons
And you don't need an SSH docker, if you run that service locally on the host.
sshd
true, guess i do'nt know how to plug it in
think they like the web terminal most of that addon
just trying to accomplish this: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/lg-webos-change-picture-setting-mode-with-scripts/262915/23
want to automatically change picture mode on my LG TVs depending on device that's active on my AVR that's plugged into the TV
Seems like you should be using HAOS
the superior install method according to @clear ferry

There's a container where it makes sense to containerise. Doesn't seem to in this case - you can SSH in to whatever you want via the host.
I need that on a t-shirt
You mean honour
I fell for a scam
"works locally with shelly3em pro" does not include the 3em
Guess who just ordered a pro one

what doesn't work?
Totally random question, does anyone know if anyone does anything interesting with AM/FM radios, shortwave, etc and Home Assistant?
I don't know how I'd use the two together .. but .. my head is just thinking weird stuff 😛
The battery storage supports local and cloud connection with shellys
But it only does cloud on this one
So I gotta replace
And somehow convince homeassistant to carry over the statistics
Start broadcasting random numbers - Lost-style
4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. Still taking space in my brain after that finale…
eh, been running it this way for years, it's completely fine
i'm sure there's a way to do it, just have to figure it all out
changing architecture of my install is a bit drastic
It's like saying one of my closets doesn't have a shelf so let's burn the house down and rebuild one with an extra shelf 😁
Luckily they have em on store here
Or well, not luckily for my wallet

What does the pro do different from the 3em?
It's just that asking how to install an ssh addon when you're running a container install is a little weird. You kinda have to have ssh or the ability to use it if you're running a container install
it's weird if you don't understand containers i guess?
not saying you do or you don't really
I start my container from ssh 🤷
it's having somewehre to install run the python install that home assistant knows about
which can't get destroyed when the container updates
the addon is a tool for the actual thing i need to figure out
i do'nt just randomly need ssh
seemed like i need HA itself to run the ssh, not the host
But...how did you crate your HA container in the first place?
that's not the point, that's outside of the container
Alright
Ur askinge things I can't answer
I could see the ASA functionality of DAB+ to be an interesting thing to integrate in HA for official warnings. But we don't have any radios with ASA available yet - and then the question would be how to get that information in HA.
can you get radio stations with tvheadend perhaps. then pull the streams from there into music assistant
This is a weird request, I’m working in a new org and they only allow mice that don’t require extra drivers (so no Logitech 😭) Anyone have suggestions for something close to the Logitech mx3?
Windows pc.
It’s a dumb rule but I don’t want to die on this hill.
speaking of which pyscript isn't being updated.. that is running me into a corner
pretty sure I can accomplish everything using just HA but ugh that's going to be complex and messy
@forest edge i think i just need to figure out how to get this to install on container start https://github.com/chros73/bscpylgtv
which i'm sure is possible, just don't know how yet!
can install it manually no problem, but it'll get destroyed on container update
It was just updated 2 months ago
It's not updated often, but it's still maintained
it seems to be lagging more and more
2 months?
which gives the impression.. it will go poof
well prior to that it was longer tyhan 2 months lol
for the longest time there was something it uses that HA complained about being discontinued
if it's still being maintained then great but the updates haven't exactly inspired confidence for me for the past 6 months or so
I would be sad if it was no longer maintained, but I see no reason to believe that's the case
He just queues up changes and releases when needed, like a lot of custom components
I'd feel differently if something was obviously broken
It's a quality integration, IMO
it's been solid.. had to make a few changes here or there due to some changes with HA but other than that it's been the backbone of me linking my HA instances together
The maintainer has a solid pedigree
I just don't want to be caught off guard and have to rush to swap stuff over.. and it has made me feel that might be a possibility with the updates being as they were
Dang, y'all guessed my wifi password.

What was once the world’s largest solar plant of its kind may soon shut down more than a decade earlier than planned. This potential closure comes as the facility has struggled to compete with newer, cheaper solar technologies and faced accusations of causing thousands of wildlife deaths.

I'm just waiting for Yellowstone to do it's thing @forest edge
you would like that wouldn't you
Yes
@warm helm would probably like it too. can already see his shit eating grin while also coughing up ash
pretty sure russia would jump on the chance to attack europe once the US was too busydealing with something like that
I've been looking everywhere in my shelves for an LCD module I know I have, to display a gauge of how much power I'm generating from solar
Couldn't find it, but I dug so greedily I found these
They're way older than me!
how the hell does fall detection work on the aqara fp2? lol

Soonish i have troubles installing home assistant on my android phone. https://www.androidpolice.com/android-15-linux-terminal-app/?fbclid=IwY2xjawI4FTpleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHf3jcfPP_KVbpeJ1z_grdEvPs7JB6otT0WJACTey4Uc7jXZngyYAu8amtg_aem_qhTBOhKngsgxheOBeFBebw
i looked ever so slightly closer, seems to be a different hardware revision at least as it running a different software would suggest
they still havent figured out how to draw the arrows on their clamps
put them in the same direction as the em3 ones, its inverted

SDR stuff looks super interesting in general .. no idea how I would use this in a meaningful way .. but ... tickling my geek brain
You would still have to intercept, decode and process the ASA message. It is a pretty new standard and special hardware might be needed.
SDR's are fun to play with. Not too many uses in HA sense IMO
its what I currently use it for
sorry which?
Yea, could be fun to go down that rabbit hole
pulling from 433/315Mhz sensors, gas meter
updated to latest, now all the Device icons/images are broken ( config/integrations/dashboard, etc) known issue or just me?
refresh? that sounds like frontend cache.
i even restarted HA
restarting HA won't fix frontend cache .. its a cache on the device you're viewing HA with (your phone, your browser)
Guys I got a question for y'all, is there a way to get ANY media playing on my tablet into my dashboard? (I put a speaker system in my room but it's being controlled by my tablet)
it's a Galaxy tab a8
anyone using the pi-hole intergration having issues with it recently?
cheers ty . figured it was likely something along those lines but couldnt find anything ^.^
theres a custom integration that you can use for now, i linked it in the linked thread
Proxmox, HomeAssistant VM on top. Frigate add-on running go2RTC
How do I access Go2RTC's web interface (port 1984) - I assume I need to forward the port somewhere, but where?
I assume proxmox is fine because it's a VM so any ports are available on the homeassistant IP/hostname
Can I tell HomeAssistant "forward port 1984 to the Frigate addon's container"?
Go2RTC seems to think it has a separate IP, but <that ip>:1984 doesnt' work either
... that IP address appears on my router's connected devices, so presumably it's a separate IP for it, huh. Still doesn't work though
Ok
fml now I've managed to break Frigate entirely
Why does everything have to be YAML and logfiles 😂
Fixed it, was right to blame YAML.... something wasn't intended enough because apparently this is sensible syntax
Give me JSON anyday
YAML > JSON. Although if you want to know a secret... ||JSON is valid inside YAML||
It is? That might be a lifesaver
Time for BRACKETS
I grew up learning JS, PHP, Java - my brain works best with brackets rather than nesting
Personally, I'd use braces. Brackets don't work well 😄
I'm British, we use different naming :p
( = bracket
[ = square bracket
{ = curly braces/brackets
How old are you (ish)? I find we're adopting the American approach lately for them because of so much programming
But when I was younger it was definitely as above
Braces ({}), brackets ([]), parentheses (())
I'm old enough that PHP was popular when I was young 🫠
Yeah you've definitely adopted the American versions then. Parenthesis is 100% American English
Tbf I think the US version is mostly better except () for brackets is still better
I'll accept {} = braces, but never "parenthesis"
It's contextual. We're talking about programming 😄 If I were talking to a layperson, I'd just say brackets for () because they don't even know what a brace or bracket is in the other sense.
this is correct... at least for code/markup
Indeed. Domain-specific language
Yeah to be clear I'd understand that version, it's very common in programming in general (I've been a full time developer for 15 years, hobbyist for another 10 before that). I just don't default to using it myself
as long as you get the point across when you need to it doesnt overally matter 😛
Like when you're talking a junior dev through something and tell them to wrap something with brackets.
No, the other brackets.
No, you idiot. The other other brackets.
lol, its funny because its true
Even when there are terms that I don't particularly like myself, it's usually better to use them for precision of language.
You know what's really controversial? Indentation. I hate it
Spaces > tabs
Yeah, it's just ambiguous in the UK because even if you used the US version, you'd still have
- "enter brackets"
- they type
() - "no the other brackets"
haha that's what started this conversation, me complaining about YAML
i am in the UK too and i know what you mean
sorry but no, tabs are king
Yeah. I'm just so used to seeing things set up with spaces. I know the argument for tabs for indentation and I actually agree with it.
But... every repo at work has the linter set up for spaces already, so I can't change it 😂
It is super hard to write yaml without an ide. Really need vscode for that
One problem with indentation is that it REQUIRES syntax highlighting for longer code IMO. Sure, you can try to keep code/config concise, but at some point you're gonna need a longer stretch
Eh? It's easy to write. Aligning things isn't tough
Yup. Luckily I just migrated to Proxmox on an NUC so can use VSCode direct now
Yuck 😄 Docker containers all the way, then just use the VS Code remote extensions to SSH into the host.
For you maybe
Have you tried using a monospaced font?
Helps a ton with seeing that columns are in line
So tell me at a glance what's wrong here
This has an indentation error?
Syntax wise? Nothing wrong with it. Whether or not the object you're describing is valid Frigate config is another matter.
But back to my earlier suggestion - write it as JSON if you prefer. Unless Frigate doesn't follow the YAML spec, it should accept it
YAML does more than JSON, which is why I prefer it where possible.
Yup
Wrong, there's an indentation error
Where?
Error: YAMLException: bad indentation of a mapping entry at line 9, column 9:
roles:
It's in line
Did you mix tabs and spaces?
Nope
That's the correct syntax
Still stand by this? 😉
I stand by the first screenshot being valid YAML.
Syntax wise? Nothing wrong with it. Whether or not the object you're describing is valid Frigate config is another matter.
I promise you it isn't
Paste the plaintext here
Just up to and including the roles is enough if that's where it claims the problem is
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
@deft pewter I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
Try the whole example...
Yes... that one is invalid. You have the roles at the same level as a list item.
That's not what you shared first
The first character on a line has to either be a non-list item that's in line with other non-list items, or a list item in line with other list items. You can't mix them.
Chatgpt found it as well 😛
