They should have put a phone in the dude's hand for the second one, not a laptop. Only rich people have laptops.

#

Yep, same. Anything you can get on your phone's plan, that should be in that man's hands.

#

Allow me to bust out some Research Knowledge I have here.

#

The cap for desktop/laptop users has been reached (years ago, in fact) - this is largely due to the increasing cost of computer devices and the convenience of being able to order a mobile device from your phone provider and pay monthly payments on it. Add on that computer classes in public education just aren't a thing anymore (there is an assumption that everyone has these devices now), you have a huge lack of PC access.

While internet and mobile savvy Gen Z and below are, they are nearly universally "device illiterate", which means they have no clue how to use a PC device nor its functions because they have literally no experience in it at home.

static schooner
#

I often have up fall back to a laptop when stuff just doesn't work right on my phone or tablet. Or is just annoying having to switch back and forth between apps

forest edge
#

Most people have no need for all the things that come with a laptop/PC.

LET ME TELL YOU HOW MY 10 YEAR OLD FOUND OUT HE COULD CREATE A GITHUB PROFILE LAST WEEK

forest edge
#

lol work pc's using "apps"

lone dagger
#

We're from a different era of device access, though. Gaming is heavily done on consoles by younger generations because of the increasing cost of customizing a PC to be able to game on.

forest edge
#

that cost isn't so bad anymore

#

literally just checked out the latest ad from microcenter lol

#

my pc cost less now than when i bought it

lone dagger
#

It still costs at least a thousand to have a gaming rig right now, though.

#

It's $500 for a console.

forest edge
#

i wish consoles would die

lone dagger
#

Why?

forest edge
#

its a money sink

lone dagger
#

Disagree, I never have to update my hardware to have game support.

For digital privacy and ownership, the consoles should stay.

The Internet infrastructure 11 years ago wasn’t ready for what they were testing.

austere anchor
#

I do wonder. Right now they are the ones driving the "at home PC" industry vs the "thin client" industry that Google pushes (Chromcast, Chromebooks, etc).

#

Since Microsoft divested in web browsers, it seems risky to pin their future on the success of a competitor (Google maintains Chromium, which underpins their web client).

primal laurel
#

in my experience the number of people running plex (or better, jellyfin) is only a small portion of the number of people dat download movies

As a representative of a company that values privacy, merging accounts from different social media platforms is very risky because then people ask how I merged their accounts. There are tools out there that do this in an effort to monitor user activity across multiplatforms.

It's a very delicate thing I would have to do. And we have turned down products that do that because they couldn't explain the implications of merging the data.

But all the smart home gear I've seen doesn't do this properly, which is really annoying if you switch the lights off after they automatically turn on, or adjust their scene/brightness after they automatically turned on.

desert cave

well, stop trying to use Arch :)

forest edge

yea I wouldn't even want to try and deal with that lol

desert cave

but yeah.. for windows, it was make an up to date USB installer, reboot into that, go through the install process, then spend 2 hours running windows updates and rebooting a dozen times, then start installing apps. For linux, making the USB installer was basically the same, though didn't take nearly as long, then the install itself took maybe 10 mins, and then another 10 mins to update to Debian 13 (I could have grabbed a 13 installer, but lazy).

forest edge

some of of that is cause you are not accounting for dealing with device drivers

#

while I haven't done it myself, I've read the win11 built in reinstall (factory reset) is actually pretty good. it takes care of all the updating including updating device drivers etc in a rather short amount of time

#

I do see it get recommended on some of the window's support tickets because it's like a fresh wipe retianing the stuff you actually want to keep

I'm not sure you could pay me to go back to Windows these days lol

they're normally last resort as "this should never get hotter than X"

#

unless I guess it was just age.

#

ie I have 150c thermal fuses on my 3D printers hotbed - that should never go above 100c

shell basalt
#

i do this too.. "I paid for this heat, I'm damn sure gonna keep using it!"

#

even ABS, for every type I've seen they normally say 80-100c as the bed temp

#

ironically, my CF nylon that I use occasionally says to use a cold bed

unborn merlin
#

sounds like.. not real abs to me if its saying anything less than 100c. 🙃

I mean if you get no ally support and you get putined universal healthcare would go down the drain lol

glacial knot
#

Because the US is the only ally they have 😂

forest edge
#

well it didn't seem zelensky was rest assured under the thought of just having europe at his back lol

deft pewter
#

No shit. The more allies, the better. But the US isn't the world's saviour.

#

US-centrism is such a dumb world view.

firefox sucked

#

I tried it

#

and if you really love the experience of slamming your head against the wall brave and opera got you covered

clear ferry

I'm probably moving off Firefox after 12 years due to recent privacy concerns

#

Need to figure out what to

#

I've already moved to soul on Android and it is quite nice actually

man, I still surprise people with this, but Edge on linux is a decent browser.

#

and ublock origin still works fine.

#

and the only use of Copilot that's embedded into it is to make AI generated memes on the fly 😄

#

but it doesn't always get em right hahahahaha

#

LOL

#

well played AI, well played 😄

is it really encryption, or is it just upping the data rate?

mighty rose
#

by "encrypt" you mean "switch to Gibberlink"?

#

oh, LOL - it even says Gibberlink on the damn video

#

yet people still get it wrong

primal laurel
#

do they really have to use such annoying frequencies. Use piano tones or something, much more pleasant

You know Brave is still just a Chromium browser, right? You don't get away from all the Google stuff.

#

FF is about the only 'mainstream' browser that Google don't influence. And it's barely mainsream with its 1% market share.

primal laurel
#

librewolf then

deft pewter
#

Does this mean that you can't use the web version of Netflix in librewolf?

as well as disabling anti-freedom features like DRM.

Recently got some ikea smart home products like plugs, lamps, dimmers etc.... and it's incredible that they like offer the same products as hue does and sometimes the ikea ones are even more versatile, yet cost 1/5 of the price.

All without using their stupid bridge thing but just regular home assistant with the zigbee dongle
