#

Chasing damn gremlins in my tuya zigbee contact sensors for months and I think it boiled down to shitty Amazon AAA batteries.

#

They would lose connection every so often, but re-pairing them to the network would be fine for a bit (days or weeks) with the same batteries. Replaced them with different brand and they all popped up on the network without repairing.

clear ferry
#

Do you turn off their parents by chance? Some devices don't like changing parents

strong sierra
#

Nope, plugged in devices that are never removed. Even then, all but 1 connect direct to the router.

#

On the flip side, the aqara contacts I bought nearly 7 years ago still have the original batteries

#

But they are literally 3-5x the price of other offerings now

I finally gave in this morning. I’ve purchased a year of YouTube premium. I’m both annoyed that I felt like I had to get it because of the amount of ads getting shoved at me and also that I waited so long. I think I’ll break even in like 2 months 😂😭

I.e
Sensors on shelves, if an item is picked up, then returned and another item picked up next to it (weight sensor or camera or both) they can redo their products placement

In the grand scheme of things, it’s not that expensive for my set aside “self care”. It’s $55 to get these either new or filled, and I tip $10-15 depending on if it’s around the weekend I get paid. It can easily get up to $100 at some salons - the technicians I see do amazing work for their price, I’ve been seeing them for 3 years now.

What can I use to define a static number? ie I want to enter the electrical cost in a single place, and then refer to that entity in the energy panels (vs entering the same number 50 times). Our prices change twice a year and I'd prefer to just edit one variable.
I thought I could use a number type helper, but that lets me define a range, but it still needs to be set somehow/where

ocean oar
#

Mine changes a lot more often (peak/off peak, plus a daily free window, and different for weekday/weekend) so I made a template helper.

{% set O = 0.2908 %}
{% set P = 0.5816 %}
{% set WD = [ O, O, O, O, O, O, O, P, P, O, O, O, 0, O, O, O, O, P, P, P, P, O, O, O ] %}
{% set WE = [ O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, 0, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O ] %}
{{ [ WD, WD, WD, WD, WD, WE, WE ][now().weekday()][now().hour] }}

(O, P in $/kWh for off peak, peak)
(WD has morning and evening peak, WE is all off-peak, and 12:00-13:00 free hence one of those O replaced by a 0)
You could do something similar with months/days, I guess.

#

But it does the trick:

I'm actually watching a video on template helpers right now 🙂

On my router I’ve been able to block all data coming into my TV, but now that I want to whitelist an IP/domain that isn’t going to work.

Any suggestions on how to do a whitelist like this? My thought was maybe a local proxy server that blocks everything except the one domain I let through

kind of an off topic question that I dont see a channel for.

Ive recently got into HA, bought a couple tapo c210s that as I understood would be able to be used completely locally after initial setup the only caveat was that you needed a firewall rule to block the cameras from phoning home.

Well aftger reading into that a bit I ended up setting up opnsense on an old small pc I've got but I dont get any internet to any of my devices.

I have a CAT5 fiber line into my house that was hooked up to a Deco Xe5300 then to a switch. I plugged the fiber line into my opnsense router then into my switch, which went to the DECO but none of my devices get discovered and I cant even access the opnsense dashboard.

if I instead go from "Fiber Liner -> DECO -> Opnsense -> Switch" I get internet access again, not sure if the firewall is even active (never dont this before still not sure how to check or how im meant to block tplink yet lol). but this seems wrong to me? (double nat?)

anyway if anyone has relavent info for this I'd appreciate it, or direct me to where i could ask this if this isnt an appropriate place and I'll delete. Thanks!

Hey all! Fellow Hue users: Anyone ever hit the limit of the number of devices you can add to the newer gen 2 hue bridge? I have 49 bulbs, and apparently the official limit is 50, but the real world limit is 63. Curious how far people have pushed this and what happens.

#

Funny enough, I have 2 more bulbs, but no sockets to plug them into to test what happens when I try to pair the 51st bulb. 😂

I bought them as backups, because it seems the newer bulbs like to fail every 5 or so years. 🤨

forest edge

49 hue bulbs in one house? wtf

crimson nacelle

My original bulbs from, what, 2012 was it? When they first came out and were Apple Store only… those are still going strong with easily 16 hours a day for the last 13 years. But the new ones with like 4-6 hours a day use have only lasted the afformetioned 5 or so years.

crimson nacelle
#

Yeah, those look promising!

forest edge

crimson nacelle

Well, the system works pretty well right now. It's pretty reliable, and I'm happy with it… but getting close to that "50" bulb limit (that apparently is actually 63), has me curious about what will happen if I go over… (not that I have anywhere else I can put bulbs, unless I start changing fixtures… which there's only one room where that might be worth while.

#

I'm mainly just curious.

I'm fairly sure I can just add another Hue Bridge to HA, and add more bulbs to it.

but yes, I deploy a lot of 32\64G FC

crimson nacelle
#

Yeah… but I remember the 2003 PowerMac G5 super computer cluster that hit, what was it, number 3? Was interconnected with fiberchannel.

#

so I've always wanted to mess with it…

#

But corporate IT doesn't need me to mess with fiber channel, unfortunately.

clear ferry
#

This was the first HPC I installed

#

Which is a child compared to the stuff today

crimson nacelle
#

Oh yeah, for sure.

#

Still probably more powerful than your smartphone, I'd imagine… but no where near as powerful as modern clusters.

clear ferry
#

Especially considering I install systems with 6TB RAM these days

#

so would only take 4 of those to surpass it in memory

crimson nacelle
#

bruh, you need to drop an NSFW tag before you mention 8TB of RAM. 😂

forest edge
clear ferry

crimson nacelle
#

I think they have 512 DIMMs now, don't they?

#

Oh wow…

clear ferry
#

yes

crimson nacelle
#

But more DIMMs probably means better memory bandwidth?

clear ferry
#

yes

#

xeon scalable platinum go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

crimson nacelle
#

fuck, the last time I talked about a 512 DIMM, it was 512 Megs…

clear ferry
#

It's a shame Persistant memory got scrapped though

crimson nacelle
#

yeahhhh….

clear ferry
#

but now we have SCM instead

crimson nacelle
#

Optane counted as SCM right?

clear ferry
#

Ish

crimson nacelle
#

I'm a bit out of date with all this stuff, because my last job (and my current one) was a startup that, while we scaled, we never really did the big servers ourselves… cloud this and cloud that… even though that's more expensive… 🙄 but whatever...

clear ferry
#

You should see the storage systems we roll out these days, 192 controllers and 384 disk shelves

#

AI go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

crimson nacelle
#

Shit… I need to change careers.

glacial knot
#

I enjoy the cloud. Nobody asks me to submit a purchase request. I just create instances 🙂

clear ferry
#

"this API call is my official purchase request"

crimson nacelle
#

Hahaha, it is convenient… but $/performance isn't great.

glacial knot
#

I'll put it into terraform once I'm done testing. I promise

forest edge
#

better to keep nerds like atx locked in server rooms

#

bitching about his red stapler

clear ferry
#

I haven't been in a server room in months now

#

I prefer my office

#

Then I tell other people to rack stuff for me

glacial knot
crimson nacelle
clear ferry
#

I do sometimes, but since I moved 1400km away from most of my customers, eh

crimson nacelle
#

When we'd set up a new office, racking the switches and patching the network was like a celebration… a painful one… but one none the less. 😂

clear ferry
#

But these days I work across the globe

#

been doing some installs in the UK, some in germany ,luxemburg and singapore recently

#

from home

crimson nacelle
#

alrighty, as much as I'm enjoying this conversation, it's 3:30 here, and I should get to bed. 😂

clear ferry
#

Yuck americans

crimson nacelle
#

Hey! I'm not American!

#

I spell colour with a "u".

clear ferry
#

CANOODIAN ?

crimson nacelle
#

damn straight! 😂

clear ferry
#

Going to my hoose

#

to goo to bed

crimson nacelle
#

and I have no clue what a mile, inch, furlong, or Fahrenheit is.

clear ferry
#

hey there friend

#

I'm not your buddy

crimson nacelle
#

I'm not your pall, buddy!

glacial knot
#

Furlong? Is that talkinga bout animals that need a barber?

clear ferry
#

fun fact for you, I had a collegue in Canada

#

that had his own plane, covered by the main office

#

because he needed to get onsite to remote locations in canada fast

crimson nacelle
crimson nacelle
#

It's like 5000km across.

crimson nacelle
#

Have you looked at the US customary system? It's a mess!

#

And all defined in SI units too.

clear ferry
#

Norway and canada are quite similar in many regards, indiginous people, snow, some midnight sun, lots of trees

crimson nacelle
#

Not many people know that the US is legally a metric country… but they use the Customary system to convert everything from metric to garbage.

clear ferry
#

There is a reason why NASA uses metric smart

glacial knot
crimson nacelle
forest edge
clear ferry
#

precision matters

#

brb just gonna fix this 4 and 32\8 + 16\5s bolt

crimson nacelle
#

I HATE it when people give me garbage units.

clear ferry
#

Took me a lot of mental gymnastics when I rented a car in Dublin and drove to Belfast, and the dash didn't have dual units

crimson nacelle
#

When we were building out our office (for some reason in Canada we use the imperial system in construction, even though it doesn't get taught in school), I demanded they give me all the units in metric.

#

The construction guys hated it… but I'm not spending time learning useless shit.

forest edge
#

gross

crimson nacelle
#

it really is gross.

#

construction and baking are imperial here…

#

Not by law… but by custom…

forest edge
#

no construction using metric sounds insane

crimson nacelle
#

wait why?

forest edge
#

because fractions it way easier to deal with

crimson nacelle
#

10ths are a fraction.

#

13.439cm is a fraction.

forest edge
#

can't even imagine using numbers like 2.4 studs lol

crimson nacelle
#

plus, let's be real: two by fours haven't been two inches by four inches in like 60 years.

forest edge
#

still

crimson nacelle
#

at best they are an inch and a half or something disgusting.

forest edge
#

its a standard and the term applies

crimson nacelle
#

a wrong term…

#

standard or not…

#

IDK, I favour accuracy above convenience 9/10 times.

forest edge
#

you also don't do it on the daily

#

if your own construction crews up there prefer imperial.. there's a reason lol

crimson nacelle
glacial knot
forest edge
#

I prefer metric when dealing with small stuff.. but anything an inch and larger.. no thanks

crimson nacelle
#

but they switched everything over in like the 70s or something. well before I was born.

forest edge
#

and even at that half an inch, 1/8th 1/16.. 3/4.. etc is way easier to throw around

clear ferry
forest edge
#

our tape measures have both so it's njot like metric is just not there.. just not preferred for a whole lot of stuff

crimson nacelle
#

Well, listen, I've got the kind of tism that makes me want to use metric and SI units as much as possible.

forest edge
#

non-american's don't understand that

clear ferry
#

How to spot sane people

crimson nacelle
crimson nacelle
#

but then again, in all sincerity, I'm the kind of person who would rather write 0.333… instead of 1/3.

#

and would rather do math with .333… over 1/3 too.

forest edge
#

over time you wouldn't lol

#

likely end up with you writing something noone else would understand lol

glacial knot
#

shrug before I write 1/3rd cm or 0.3cm I'll write 3mm

clear ferry
#

something the rest of the world would understand

glacial knot
#

Fractions are just not an issue when your measures align with your numbers rooD

crimson nacelle
#

😂

clear ferry
#

Classic canadian

#

Even more so french canadian

#

LE WHAT THE FUCK

crimson nacelle
#

They just made the bolts align to the metric units.

forest edge
#

the biggest issue is that other countries really don't have to look at imperial in every day stuff.. a side by side compare constantly. american's have had to do that with literally every measuring device we have lol

crimson nacelle
#

shit it's 4:00, what happened. 😂😂😂

#

OK, I really do need to go. 😂😂😂

#

Night night all!

#

thanks for the good info and the fun conversation!

clear ferry
forest edge
#

this is going to be a rather interesting 4 years lol

#

this is a good watch

Hello guys. I installed the home assistant on the orbstack program (docker) of Mac. Then I installed xiaomi home in HA and added xiaomi devices. I can control the xiaomi device in HA. But I want to connect to apple homekit. I installed homekit bridge, but there was no response when I scanned the code to add it on the iPhone. Can't add

#

Anyone can help me?
