Yeah, they look great, it is a shame tbh
Unfortunately every other brand is also 2-4x in price
Maybe there is a firmware update but zha never shows any so I guess not

oh the glare is so bright!
Aqara ftw
Chasing damn gremlins in my tuya zigbee contact sensors for months and I think it boiled down to shitty Amazon AAA batteries.
They would lose connection every so often, but re-pairing them to the network would be fine for a bit (days or weeks) with the same batteries. Replaced them with different brand and they all popped up on the network without repairing.
Do you turn off their parents by chance? Some devices don't like changing parents
Nope, plugged in devices that are never removed. Even then, all but 1 connect direct to the router.
On the flip side, the aqara contacts I bought nearly 7 years ago still have the original batteries
But they are literally 3-5x the price of other offerings now
I finally gave in this morning. I’ve purchased a year of YouTube premium. I’m both annoyed that I felt like I had to get it because of the amount of ads getting shoved at me and also that I waited so long. I think I’ll break even in like 2 months 😂😭
what are these ads you speak of?
The things you see every 5 minutes if you don’t have a pihole or premium
ublock origin works fine on every device I own
I don’t watch it on a computer. Almost exclusively my phone or tv
phone blocks it too
just have to use the browser and not the app
havent checked the TV
I have neither of those and don't see anything every 5 minutes cept the content itself
What are you doing to block the ads
just what stefan said
Oh. Yeah. That’s not a solution that will work for me.
why not?
Because it won’t work on the tv
casting always works. I've done that. Haven't tried using the webbrowser on android tv yet
there are other things like vanced but why not just run something like pihole of adblocker?
Got my epg working in home assistant again
Something something YouTube mod app
Don’t work on YouTube ads but just run vanced
But then again if you use and can pay for YouTube then do
like how you changed that lol
Yeah I’m not gonna do any of that. It makes the experience worse for everyone else in the house, I have to deal with updating and maintaining it. 100 bucks a year is well worth what I’m saving in time and frustration.
Family pack is worth it 100% if you don’t use Spotify
I don't regret a single day of paying for youtube family, no ads for kids whenever we are, and I used to watch YouTube for 4-5h per day when they were babies
there is uYou+ I seen mentioned in reddit threads. not sure how that works
Any Indian or Turkish person here?
see, just make you all pay so we here don't have to lol
that should be the standard
Enjoy your raised taxes though Sonoma 😤

You don't make above $361k a year I reckon
don't pay taxes for youtube..
Indirectly
not sure we pay in any way at all
californians may
well obviously they do since tax credits etc lol
Tax is always so infuriating when I'm in the states
"Oh that's cheap"
suddenly adds state tax, then adds city tax
Rest of the world
_this is the price _
you pay it too, just in a diffrent way
well, yea. But we know the price when we look at products
He’s saying tax inclusive pricing is superior, which it is
if it's all the same at the end. does it really matter?
yes
Yes
one system provides consumers with all information
the other doesn't
It is like 300kr a month! Iirc
It is super nice to walk into a store and see exactly how much something will cost.
Is it? It was 179 when I got it
you can do that here with a bit of knowledge and math skills
you mean, it's annoying when price tags lie 😂
But it’s also hard in the states because the amount taxed can change in the space of a quarter mile.
279 it seems
So both the right of employment and the right of taxation, got it
Although saying that, you get youtube music too iirc, is it really a spotify replacement though?
what if im traveling? should I remember it for every state?
So it’s really something that would be possible with electronic shelf tags, but stores don’t want to pay for them
Like if Americans travel
hah
lol I have three Targets in my city. The tax assessed is different at all 3.
nothing prevents someone from asking what something cost in total prior to purchase
HOW
What the actual fuck
Yes, it fucking sucks
but WHY
why a lot of things in the world
sigh
😂
Why don't I have a pet raccoon, for example?
we know why
imagine you have to take every item to a PoS to figure out the price
You keep turning them all into filament
I agree, the employees are piece of shit
imagine having to worry about the cost of tax in order to buy something
thats how we look at it
That's exactly what we avoid

we don't worry about it, thus it's a none issue
Exactly, you already know the government is taking 25%!
yea, you just live in a default of misinformation 🤷
how so?
Sonoma, pretend you’re at the poverty line shopping. 5-13% could make or break you.
just dont be poor, problem solved
And having to validate every purchase just adds unnecessary stress and stigma to what is already a hard situation
not sure what to make of this perception you have.. as we already established.. everyone pays taxes one way or the other.. soo what diffrence does it make?
Yes
I don’t understand how you’re making this controversial
less of a problem these days, but when cash was more common it wasn't even poverty
just immediately accessible funds in general
if tax is a concern.. it's something you shouldn't even be looking at...

it's impressive right
yea, if you ignore reality it's not a problem
disagreeing with the big deal of how taxes are applied makes it controversial?
everyone is suppose to just agree with otyher countries logic?
I’ve literally paid for a mother trying to buy fever meds for their baby because she was short 32 cents. Like that’s so fucking avoidable.
thinking that not including it isn't striclty worse
whether it's by a lot is a different matter
You are a good person
Can we rename ender - beginner instead
Much more positive
He didn't end that mother right there
🤔
Ended her 32 cent debt though
he did end the (immediate) money troubles
Hahaha

You all will be shocked when you find out ender isn’t my irl name
you play minecraft?
is it Steve?
Negative
His name is Eduard Newton Der
Jorg you win!
Who doesn't know you from TV?
I always use my full given name as a nick, helps me avoid taxes, atxbyea DROP DATABASE

I miss being able to do TTS when you join teamspeak, you could call yourself {}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}
@tidal bronze isn't that right?
Hillarious

Played a lot of Americas Army and then CS Source with teamspeak
And then Ventrillo
I understand people's right to protest but gosh this is frustrating to come across when trying to solve things lol

It's like the old forum thread's where you'd just get a "nvm solved" from 3 years ago
cheater game of the world
I hosted teamspeak servers on a dual premium pro system in 2004
I tried AA once or so
The worst.
I was awful at it, but I had a lot of fun
Especially for really obscure things
is that how your habit of hosting half of norway started?
Already earlier, I started hosting online in 98
And then I just did the entire country
The only thing I was remotely okay at was Unreal Tournament 2004 playing Onslaught, I got ranked fairly well in that for a few months
I didn't like UT 2004 as much as UT99
Then I got into World of Warcraft (TBC) and we still used Ventrillo
The only online games I played to the point of being ranked/good at were Jedi outcast and Jedi academy.
paying for an MMO just never sat quite right with me
Come think of it, I started playing online games in 1992
I wasted 17 hours a day on WoW
I can't ever play it again
do tell what games in 92
Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD) is a text-based online role-playing video game, released in 1989 by Robinson Technologies. LORD is one of the best known door games. The player's goal is to improve their skills in order to defeat the Red Dragon which has been attacking the village. The software is compatible with DOS, Microsoft Windows, and OS/2....
I was so addicted
that's really stretching what can be considered multipler lol
welcome to reddit.
also there are probably waybacks of that maybe? 🤷♂️
I hate posts like that omg
its what happens when reddit is shitty
"games" like zork etc.. I just have trouble with actually calling a game

even oregon trail had images
@weak musk now he is making it controversial again for no reason, what should we do
lulz
Hard to say
I think the power went out at the barn
The original 1971 oregon trail was text based and written in BASIC. You're thinking of the 1980 remake.
Can we have any sneakpeak for 2025.3 :)

yea. computers weren't really mainstream in the 70's
Says you. I was there.
so was i
and who brought "mainstream" into the conversation?
but don't remember them being everywhere
Computers were a solitary experience back then, before the internet and before modems. How would you even expect to know what people were doing with them?
it's not like people were throwing lan parties in the 70s
really only saw them for data entry. don't think I knew a single person who had a home computer in the 70's
Most homes had computers from the mid 80s in Norway, and everyone had internet from the early 90s, became quite commonplace quickly here
And fun fact, Norway was the first country that connected to arpanet outside the us
that's pretty cool, I had no idea Norway was so progressive with connectivity like that
Yeah, we got FTTH in 2004
stick around in this channel and you'll be taught..
||lmao||
europoors, always so far behind the US
I was the Fidonet echo link between the US and Netherlands for a while in the 80s
when 9600 baud hit the market with the USR HST
I could only afford the courier modems through their sysop purchase program
I actively try and forget the phone modem days
It was a fun time
damnit now I just remembered aol. you guys suck
Thankfully dialup was dead by 98
Or tbf,95
I'm not sure if I would say isdn was dial up
There were still lots of areas in the US stuck with dialup into the early 2000s. I wouldn't say ISDN was dial up just because it was 24/7 always on and not hourly metered
There was no brrrrr kzt kzt brrrr
even if the speeds weren't a huge leap, always on is a huge difference in service and how you used the internet
128k baby, dual lines
still places in 2025. but thankfully 4g covers more ground as an alternative
4g is starting to die out already with 5g and even more so private 5g
private 5g lmao
I worked with NetZero a bit and that had to be 2002 maybe? They were one of the places trying to work out free dialup in exchange for serving ads and stuff to customers. Horrible experience, kinda like the bargain bin mobile carriers these days
WWAN broadband 😂
yea, DECT is out 😮
Yes, we are selling tons of it
That was a name I hadn't heard in over a decade
🤷 old people here still like ti for landlines
to who? factories?
Yes, lots of industrial, but also to supermarkets and small companies
The places I've heard the most about using it around here are ports (sea, not air)
I'm surprised super markets don't use some 802.11 based comms
They have done that for decades already
or maybe 802.15 family
TBH most hospitals I've been into desperately need something just to have reception deep inside the building at all
Not really been a problem here tbh, I've rolled out some of the biggest hospitals in the country, and even though the telephone coverage is good enough by far even in the basements the fully covered wifi + voice over wifi helps a lot
I don't see how it helps in product placement
Each hospital will be around 1400 APs
and for tracking, 802.11 or BLE should work fine 🤷
It seems like WiFi calling on phones has gotten a lot more reliable and well-supported, which is really nice
I.e
Sensors on shelves, if an item is picked up, then returned and another item picked up next to it (weight sensor or camera or both) they can redo their products placement
And if they track the carts with BLE they can see if someone who picked up chips goes backwards in the store to pickup something else often they can place those two items together
Yeah it has been for close to a decade good now
You mean, far apart. not together, right? because they want you to walk through the entire store to spontaneously buy something you see
No, they want the items closer
Bigger chance of purchasing together based on other people patterns
oh yeah well we got FTTH like 10 years later for 20x the cost! /s
For much of the US, internet is a wasteland of high prices and CGNAT, or Nazi satellites

Back to groups of animals, I was amused to see a 'bloat of hippos' used in the wild today: https://www.threads.net/@abcnews/post/DGYgVARNtHd?xmt=AQGz2CKf41aCaisKTBOU8HyOKNNENFe04jdxuefw9lcoGQ
A bloat of hippos was spotted taking a stroll down a main street in Saint Lucia, South Africa, in late January.
According to Heritage Tours and Safari, a local tour company, there are approximately 800 hippos in the nearby nature reserve.
https://trib.al/iBPZwY4
A journalist checked an item off the bucket list today
good thing he stayed way the fuck back
hippos are.. like.. fairly close to game-like monsters, things that fat looking should not fucking be moving as fast as they can move..
You kinda think that they spend so much time in the water because they need it to support their weight, but then one starts chasing you on land...
hippos in water.. hippos on land
them legs. 😛
all regular hippos are bastards.

any retail worker or service worker has had this thought more than once
I thankfully haven't worked in retail in 22 years
I think retail or former retail workers should just band together and take a state. 😛
Now I don't even have to mingle with people, I still want to trample them

And you can't get tested that early or know you've got the flu then so..
its basically only proper useful if you're using it prophylactically
so insurances will do like.. 100$ copays on that with deductibles.

Cobwebs vacuumed from ceiling
I need to do this. Have been putting it off.
That gets done much more often
Have a few of these ones https://www.mi.com/global/product/xiaomi-smart-standing-fan-2-pro/
Mildly annoying that there's one tiny (and probably easily lost) screw, but once you take that out it's all hand-disassembly. Gets vacuumed and reassembled
Actually not quite that one, have the non-battery model. But looks the same
I spent all day writing CSS for a fucking blog post. Am I a web dev now
I can’t find my angled vacuum brush for this otherwise I’d have done that, too.
Another thing to 3d print
How would I print the bristles?
https://www.printables.com/model/119009-the-hairy-lion
Like this, but with flexible filament?
😂
I own 2 vacuums and neither is 100% ideal for dusting the fans.
Usually gets done with the ESD-safe vacuum because its flexi hose and nozzle are a bit easier than the Dyson stick (for which the brushes are quite short)
Ooh found it in my bedroom! Thought it was in my office lol.
Or a wand (printed or otherwise) that can hold a microfiber cloth works
just make sure you give the web developers time to move aside before vacuuming away their old deployments
anyone noticed wether funkwhale just shut down?

folks, does anyone know of any good wifi receiver I can use for my TV?
i think I could use a decent AP/Router for this
i just have a samsung tv which has a pretty terrible wifi card. wifi in my living room is great (AP is right next) but the TV disconnects constantly
ideally I’d run a cable but it’s too complicated
so I’m thinking I put in a router set to “AP” mode

Pretty impressive to bork 25 year old protocol in a single update, but unRAID tries to be as shit as truenas I guess
man, I wish there was someone smarter than me that could convert my NodeRED flow for an A/C vent control to a HA plugin / integration.
the hacks required in nodered is pretty...... special lol
don't you mean automation?
nodered was pretty complicated when I messed around with it but not sure that there isn't anything you can do in it that you can't do in normal HA automations at this point
Node red was always ha automations with extra steps for me, I saw no actual value in it
stand alone it's pretty neat
this nodered flow does raw TCP stuff to the device
so its a lot more than a basic automation
it also abuses the hell out of the homeassistant-nodered addon to create entities lol
it also has to talk to HA via websockets
hmm ... Scenes is full of scenes I didn't create and which can't be deleted. I wonder where these all come from.

Anyone using and controlling any Bluetooth only Light Bulb by Aliexpress from Home Assistant?
i got it added to device list using tuya (non local), but can't control it since there are no controls available.
If i try using tuya local it only finds the wifi-bluetooth gateways and no other bluetooth only device.
Any ideo on how to control light bulbs from smart home? (Tuya or local tuya wil be both fine).
Thanks in advance

wireless handset for old analog phone? i had something similar
Best tip I was ever given about that was to set the brush down approximately in the middle of the nail and then first push inwards (go a little left, go a little right) before pulling it outwards off the nail. With a few hours of practice, you very quickly get very pretty nails that way.
Aye, that is the technique I'm trying at least
You'll get better quickly 🙂
2nd best tip I was ever given was to put the nails into ice water for a few minutes. Polish gets hard so much faster.
I’m in need of a fill, but that’s next weekend.
Still have to polish them.
What does a fill refer to here, in English?
No, these are what’s called builder gel. It’s a thinner alternative to acrylic nails.
It means I need to get the nail growth “filled in”. If you look at my nails close to the cuticle, you can see a small amount of real nail. That needs to be filled with new material. This is 2 weeks of nail growth, I get them filled every 3 weeks.
I'm too scared to ask how expensive that is
In the grand scheme of things, it’s not that expensive for my set aside “self care”. It’s $55 to get these either new or filled, and I tip $10-15 depending on if it’s around the weekend I get paid. It can easily get up to $100 at some salons - the technicians I see do amazing work for their price, I’ve been seeing them for 3 years now.
well- my ha has been stuck on updating core for almost 30 min
😅
of course it finishes not long after I sent that message :p
must’ve been a huge upgrade huh?
What a weird coincidence... was just going to search YT for nail polish tips 💅 when I open my laptop to see some at HA water cooler 🤣 #the-water-cooler message
Are you using one of the Google integrations?

wait, getting them new is the same price as getting them filled o_O
For this type of material, yes. Acrylic is about $15 cheaper, but I also break those very easily. Haven’t broken any nails using builder gel yet!
Did you see the guy with the solid metal nails?
@BilletLabs on YT ... these look sick, and no breaking them ever. I just wish I had the skills to build some like them.
Seems base coat is really worth the hassle 😄
That's him
Any tips on best flat nail polish?
dont drink it
The cheaper it is, the worse quality it has. OPI is what professionals use and it’s easy to access as a regular consumer.
I love getting chrome glitter done!
This was the last time I got that done.

Seems like my region moved from Little Brownie Bakers to ABC for Girl Scout cookies and it seems like a downgrade
I concur with this assessment, at least for Samoas and Thin Mints: https://www.thedailymeal.com/eat/girl-scout-cookie-taste-comparison-abc-little-brownie-bakers/
The ABC Thin Mints leave a weirdly bitter aftertaste. Not a fan
sounds worth a crusade to me
This year, Girl Scouts San Diego will be partnering with ABC Bakers.
Pfft
"partnering"
On the plus side, I won't feel as tempted when exiting the supermarket
After selling cookies made by Little Brownie Bakers for many years, the council changed to ABC Bakers, which makes many of the same varieties, but some under other names. The exceptions are Thin Mints, Trefoils and Adventurefuls, which go by the same name at both bakeries. There are also some new flavors.
I feel like this is a SUPER noob question. What can I use to define a static number? ie I want to enter the electrical cost in a single place, and then refer to that entity in the energy panels (vs entering the same number 50 times). Our prices change twice a year and I'd prefer to just edit one variable.
I thought I could use a number type helper, but that lets me define a range, but it still needs to be set somehow/where
helpers.
Mine changes a lot more often (peak/off peak, plus a daily free window, and different for weekday/weekend) so I made a template helper.
{% set O = 0.2908 %}
{% set P = 0.5816 %}
{% set WD = [ O, O, O, O, O, O, O, P, P, O, O, O, 0, O, O, O, O, P, P, P, P, O, O, O ] %}
{% set WE = [ O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, 0, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O, O ] %}
{{ [ WD, WD, WD, WD, WD, WE, WE ][now().weekday()][now().hour] }}
(O, P in $/kWh for off peak, peak)
(WD has morning and evening peak, WE is all off-peak, and 12:00-13:00 free hence one of those O replaced by a 0)
You could do something similar with months/days, I guess.
But it does the trick:
I think we will be moving to a similar setup in 2026
I'm actually watching a video on template helpers right now 🙂
around here the price changes hourly based on spot prices on NordPool, luckily there is an integration for that. my meter reader also pulls the prices from nordpool, so i could get the info through that entity, but the ready made integration is easier.
maybe useful
Trying to find out why HA does not show any artwork from kodi and failing miserably. When I do a separate API request to Kodi, the correct artwork is provided. So, is it a HA Kodi integration thing or something else.
This is not a support channel
True, just looking guidance as to were to go for support.
Probably #1284966582375813201
Already added a post 17 days ago. I am under the impression that it is to technical.
Maybe not, but there is a MUCH better chance of getting responses to questions in an open chat vs the ticket channels.
yes, many people are complaining, but this is the way it is
And a much better chance to be reminded by a mod about the channel topic.
English only!
No typing in any other language than English; we cannot moderate different languages.
lol this channel
I'm not sure where the right place to ask this is but are the tarrifs in effect right now? I want to order something from aliexpress since its much cheaper than Amazon
yes.. went into effect earlier this month
Well dident they put a temporaily pause on it?
oh.. maybe. not seen anything
Honestly? It changes daily. Google would be a better source than here.
True, ill see what i can find
Mexico and Canada are on hold. I thought China went into effect
Well, what I see is that the majority of the questions in the support channels are highly technical...
Which means...
Only advanced users are asking them
Non-advanced users think they can't or shouldn't ask questions (ie too scared to)
I know I've asked 5 or 6 questions over the last two months and only gotten one answer that wasn't very helpful.
Yeah id figured someone would possibly know in here from buying cheap sensors from Ali, as i never ordered from aliexpress before
you live west coast, middle or east?
East
then it may not take 2 years in delivery for you
Yeah i see the ETA is like March 01-05 i think
No one is paid to be here, everyone volunteers. So if you’re not getting answers your question or title may need more details or clarity OR no one knows the answer.
Thats if i were to buy it
I wouldn't put a lot of faith in the estimation date regardless lol
Their delivery has been 2 weeks or less to the flyover states since December.
but if your on a coast you may get it before you grow old and die
oh? wonder what changed?
cause the mail delievery has gotten worse not better and it's generally what many ali stuff ships through
If i did go aliexpress i would only save like $30 i think for what im buying (multiple items)
It goes to a warehouse and doordash drivers or equiv deliver to the nouses. Temu also.
no joke?
You, we'ss see a person delivering them in a car that is full to the windows with little white bags.
I have found buying from a manufacturer website or something close is cheaper than amaon, and faster than Temu/Ali.
interesting and slightly distruburbing lol
Oh ok, i'm pretty much buying all the hardware for this project: https://github.com/yanshay/SpoolEase
I bought a lot from https://us.itead.cc/
The temp sensors were almost 1/2 the price as Amazon! Took two days to prep/ship, and 3 days to get here. Ordered on Sunday, had everything on Friday.
That's a cool project 🙂
Yeah, he finnaly released the source code today i think, and it seems better than OpenSpool as it has no custom boards
Over the last 4 months I have determine that I'm good at the technical stuff, but can't build a dashboard to save my life!
its always going to be cheaper
on aliexpress.
I tried an ESP32 screen for a simple control panel, but then just went to a Fire Tab and i have no regrets
remember, amazon is basically just an aliexpress reseller after all. 😛
Yeah with Markups, like the screen i need for that project is $22 on Ali and $40 on Amazon
I would love to just checkout but im concerned about all those tarrifs
I bought 50 3' tall skeletons from Temu for about $10 each. They were $30-50 on Amazon. It just took a month to get here 😛
i haven't hit any issues. 🤷♂️
they tried to drop the 800$ or whatever
but the 10% tarrif remains in effect
but then realized (by having literally anyone with a fucking functional brainstem) say
"Hey, you need to give us like.. a fuckton more staffing and hours to actually be able to do this."
Probably.
IIRC there is still a minimum amount before the tariff hits. So a $200 order isn't going to trigger it. It's how/why Temu/Ali exists, they live in that minimum order area.
and also none of the pakcages (even on 900$+ total orders) i've ever made have had more than like 200-400$ in them
because of how repackaging works and grouping/etc
isn't temu about to get banned from the US?
who knows, the USA is a very stupid country and they can try all they want but temu will just..
.... move to another app name
And IIRC the shipper pays the tarrif, so they would increase the prices on the website.
The US is a f'ing disaster right now (yes I live in the US)
ah yes the typical circumventing ban tactics
play stupid games; win stupid prizes.
Would AliExpress live chat be able to answer any questions about the tarrifs?
doubtful; its not their problem
wasn't that part of the whole ban thing to begin with?
i need to relook that back up
no that was literally about israel, that guy came out and admitted it.. 🙃
too much stuff has been going on to fully absorb all the shit that flys across the news anymore lol
oh ok so nothing stuck as of yet
this thing is a complete waste if money but was curious so ordered one
whats the issue with it?
not really practical because a smart plug would achieve the same result. thing dosen't even save on sticking out from outlet space
so just a "solution in search of a problem" type deal then?
there might be some intances where it would be better than a smart plug. least thing dosen't require a ground plug etc
it might be more useful if it was designed to go on the device end instead of the source end
thats another thing, it could technically go "in-line"
If you just made it this but electronic (and preferably USB-C), I think it'd be more useful for a lot of things
i feel it probably has some edge cases of usefulness, but in alot of cases... yeah a smartplug is probably easier and better
second sonoff thing I ever bought lol
I have a couple of power strips with always-on USB power supplies built in. Could see using it with that, although I don't really have anything using those which doesn't just get unplugged when not in use.
i havent tried any sonoff stuff but from what people have said. they seem to be decent enough value
my first thing was their rf bridge which I still use. reflashed with something else but the hardwareisstillin use
damn space bar
don't buy razer keyboard
yeah... i have heard razer stuff doesnt last very long
mice seem fine but the headsets and keyboards have really gone down hill
I use them with 6" extensions on multi USB bricks. Great for decorative lights when the same switch is also powering a raspberry pi or similar.
yea I could see the in line use
plugging directly into the power brick is going to suck which is really the only use atm I have for it. I knew that before buying too but wanted to try it lol
brick is one of those wyze bricks too and those things stick out a good chunk as is
I've seen a lot of UK ones over the years that are this kind of form factor, very few with other styles of mains plugs
yeah this type of thing
I was about to ask "why have you plugged a flash drive into a power supply", but that's probably a Zigbee repeater or something isn't it?
its an esp32, I use a few like this for espresence
Fun form factor
how does those work with those outlet that set in?

The shape is already there
Just needs a sticker for the plug to look like an HA logo
its a cheap AE one i got a while back. and they are not great because the built in antenna is crap
this is the adapter - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004577931066.html
lol says it right in the name ch343p.. cheap
they are cheap and nasty but for the job its fine. if they blow up then i don't lose much
i have used a couple of them for other sensors too. they do the job fine as long as your not trying to max them out
How are people handling things like temporarily delaying/disabling notifications? I have done a couple things but haven’t found something that seems to scale well. think this could be a good option to include in the service calls ideally
oh I was thinking of AU outlets with the inset
Is this a good place to ask for advice on a networking problem I want to solve? Don’t see any other channel just trying to solicit feedback
Not HA networking ^ more of just a home network configuration I’d like to do
if you are referring to automations then #1284980040940912641 is what you want
as long as it's not related to HA then sure
the #the-workshop is another place probably better suited for more in-depth responses to ideas etc but general questions might land you a response in here
So… I’m trying to prevent Google Ads/Google Services from showing up on my Android TV - ideally I want specific IPs/domains (WAN) to be allowed to send data to the device but nothing else.
On my router I’ve been able to block all data coming into my TV, but now that I want to whitelist an IP/domain that isn’t going to work.
Any suggestions on how to do a whitelist like this? My thought was maybe a local proxy server that blocks everything except the one domain I let through
I’ll repost in Workshop if nobody’s got ideas here
pihole
So.. I’ve got AdGuard Home - aka pihole - problem though is that Google likely cycles IPs and Domains so they’re subject to change. I’d have to constantly maintain a blocklist where I manually add all of their domains constantly
That seems like a ton of maintenance - unless there’s some block all feature idk about
well isn't what what the lists are for you subscribe too?
Maybe I should be asking this in the Adguard server if they have one
its going to be a bit of a moving target. usually the adlists update though?
Yeah… the moving target is what I want to avoid. I have a fixed IP/domain that I want to let through that won’t change - idk - to me, it seems like there should be a trivial way w/o a list
in chrome once in a awhile the ads on youtube do manage to sneak in but rarely lasts longer than half an hour or so
Blocking everything except something.com
Have you considered just changing the launcher to block most of them?
i havent used adguard but on pihole you could set the client to a whitelist instead of a blacklist
Projectivy Launcher is great on Android TV/Google TV
I haven’t used a custom launcher - didn’t know they exist for atvs - but I’ll give it a look.
I’ll have to look- I think it blocks for everything on the network - which is problematic because I do want google services on my desktop - just not the tracking through the TV
curious how well those work since tv's with built in android generally have shit hardware with bare min ram
way better
made my tv buttery smooth
This TV I have is pretty garbage, the default launcher is laggy
you should be able to specify different rules per client
I’ll dive in and see and report back
Fingers crossed
I looked at the launcher - it doesn’t look very pretty 😔
you can customize it
tons of customizability
ill send a picture in a second here.
Might do both if I can - custom launcher that doesn’t constantly tell me my internet is disconnected would be nice
screensaver is the aerial views app (pulled from Apple TV screensavers)
Where can I get this exact theme
You have to customize it
the wallpaper is shuffled from the Projectivy Unsplash
I can screenshot my settings whenever you get it fully setup
Progress update - was able to get a custom filtering rule in AGH to block everything on the device, except my attempts at whitelisting seem to fail :/
Got it!
||*^$client='Android TV'
@@||domain1.com^$client='Android TV'^$important
@@||domain2.com^$client='Android TV'^$important
Blocks everything for the 'Android TV' client I set up and then unblocked the two custom domains 🤘
I'll have to sideload the custom launcher on there, but I'll work on that soon
Appreciate the help here @hoary canyon @dawn badge
Projectivity launcher uses location though... I mean, no match for the block, but it's also not OSS :/
FLauncher might be the best OSS alternative so far
So many dead repos, and the closed source ones seem... questionable
is a static launcher really something that should cost money - the premise is simple and there's many phone launchers that are free
Might be something of value https://github.com/nielsvanvelzen/tv-launcher
kind of an off topic question that I dont see a channel for.
Ive recently got into HA, bought a couple tapo c210s that as I understood would be able to be used completely locally after initial setup the only caveat was that you needed a firewall rule to block the cameras from phoning home.
Well aftger reading into that a bit I ended up setting up opnsense on an old small pc I've got but I dont get any internet to any of my devices.
I have a CAT5 fiber line into my house that was hooked up to a Deco Xe5300 then to a switch. I plugged the fiber line into my opnsense router then into my switch, which went to the DECO but none of my devices get discovered and I cant even access the opnsense dashboard.
if I instead go from "Fiber Liner -> DECO -> Opnsense -> Switch" I get internet access again, not sure if the firewall is even active (never dont this before still not sure how to check or how im meant to block tplink yet lol). but this seems wrong to me? (double nat?)
anyway if anyone has relavent info for this I'd appreciate it, or direct me to where i could ask this if this isnt an appropriate place and I'll delete. Thanks!
I've got a couple noob questions in the Dashboard areas 😛
well this is not really related to HA. its more network config
I already put my questions in there
No, but I did now... I don't see how that's an issue
Questions are dashboard related, so they are in the correct place.
I didn't post the questions here, so again, in the right place.
Rule 7
Use the correct channels or threads for your messages. If there's a better place for the current conversation then use it, and **don't post or link to the same thing in multiple places. **
you’re posting about your post.
🙄
I look forward to the day when rules will be put in video form for those who can't read literally. /s
new rule then: Rule 1 - Lern two reed gud
There's a web-based RPG out there that before you can enter the chat, your character must enter the Alter of Literacy and go thru a "trial" to prove that you can read and basically prove that you've read the "rules"
Go through some basic moderator training
I liked - back in the IRC days - the channel created by Randall Munroe (XKCD)
https://blog.xkcd.com/2008/01/14/robot9000-and-xkcd-signal-attacking-noise-in-chat/
It kept a hashset of everything that's ever been said in the channel, and hands out increasingly long mute periods if you repeat something
the comment section for this post is amazingly low signal
Ironic, certainly. Yay for bot spam
weren't those ordered to be shut down?
Just json files for configuration
eh I’m all for open source but on a TV it seems a little unnecessary
for important stuff though definitely
I don’t think you HAVE to enable location either
even if you do, I bet it’s for some functionality of the launcher rather than actually tracking you
lots of systems like to bundle stuff under the location privacy setting
I've had smart tv for 9 years now, yet to use the features outside of controlling it with HA for on / off
should look into notification popups.. quite nice
Yeah, I used that for a while actually, but then I just moved all notification to telegram
unglue the phone from the palm of your hand already
hello people, can anyone pitch in with an idea - I'm on vacation, HA on proxmox shat the bed at home... not entirely sure which VM is to blame, but HA is kinda still running, only without disk access. I can't restart from HA and I can't login into pve, can't ssh, can't do anything I can think of
I'll probably get in the car and pull the plug, but it's a couple hours drive and I'd love it if I could try to hard reset the HA machine somehow

learn from your mistake. don't run HA on proxmox
the reliability of my pi's was the sole reason I decided against moving HA to my server using docker. Dosen't appear anything else is as reliable lol
It's not wrong, as a musician with 35 years experience I can confirm
that's when you start investing into networked KVMs 😂
This is why proper servers have ipmi
I've fixed my systems in the middle of the night from Atlanta
(that is about 7800km)
Earth circumference is a weird thing, I've moved 1400km north from where I lived, but even if Atlanta is south I'm actually 800km closer to it
ipmi or simalar is definetly the way to go. saves trips to the rack
Yas
the 2 main servers in my rack:
1 has ipmi
the other has a pikvm inside
that would require getting "real" hardware 😂
I just have relays to power cycle them and pray
thought you had said Atlantic so I pictured this.
I like the setup, I would love to try that keyboard
I've been a Microsoft natural user for 27 years
split keebs
Hey all! Fellow Hue users: Anyone ever hit the limit of the number of devices you can add to the newer gen 2 hue bridge? I have 49 bulbs, and apparently the official limit is 50, but the real world limit is 63. Curious how far people have pushed this and what happens.
Funny enough, I have 2 more bulbs, but no sockets to plug them into to test what happens when I try to pair the 51st bulb. 😂
I bought them as backups, because it seems the newer bulbs like to fail every 5 or so years. 🤨
49 hue bulbs in one house? wtf
My original bulbs from, what, 2012 was it? When they first came out and were Apple Store only… those are still going strong with easily 16 hours a day for the last 13 years. But the new ones with like 4-6 hours a day use have only lasted the afformetioned 5 or so years.
Yup. The whole house. Every lightbulb is a hue bulb.
And pretty much each room is motion activated.
Light switches suck.
bunch of multi bulb fixtures?
(also my house has no neutral in the gangbox, so smart switches are not an option).
Yeah.
6 in the kitchen, 10 in the basement, 3 in my office and the spare bedroom, two in my bedroom, 6 in the living room, 2 in the den, 4 in the carport, 2 on the back porch, 1 on the front porch, 3 in the foyer, 2 in the hallway, three in the bathroom… I think that's it?
I'm forgetting some clearly.
these all rgb? or just replaced with smart bulb for control of on/off?
Oh god no. I'm stupid, not rich. 😂
Those colour ones are like 80 bucks a pop.
I only have 6 of those from the two original kits I bought in 2012. One for me, and one for my dad, but he decided he didn't like them and gave them back to me.
My tuya RGBW where like 3-4€ a piece
back then they only had the multi colour ones.
Yeah, there are a lot cheaper options. I stuck with hue because of their API.
there are no neutral smart switches
Which doesn't matter that much now that I run HA.
Yeah, for like 200 dollars. each.
I just got the cheap ones because a local store had them for dirt cheap. Also had some multi outlets that are smart home enabled (normal + 2 USB)
where do you live? companies like MOES and GE sell them for around 20 bucks
Canada.
so yea.. not 200 lol
yea
check amazon, there are even more options
oh, those are wifi…
what do you need?
well they are bluetooth as well..
what's their API like?
Does it require internet access? Local interrogation is a must for any smart device on the network, with no internet access.
shellies are to be releasing zigbee pucks. those won't require a neutral either i believe
Yeah, those look promising!
think sonoff currently has something as well
Well, the system works pretty well right now. It's pretty reliable, and I'm happy with it… but getting close to that "50" bulb limit (that apparently is actually 63), has me curious about what will happen if I go over… (not that I have anywhere else I can put bulbs, unless I start changing fixtures… which there's only one room where that might be worth while.
I'm mainly just curious.
I'm fairly sure I can just add another Hue Bridge to HA, and add more bulbs to it.
that sounds about right.
if it becomes an issue maybe ditch the hub and get a cordinator lol
I doubt it will become an issue. I'm largely just curious.
Hey, I had 80 tradfri in my old house
but yes, ditch hubs always
zigbee2mqtt is lyfe
yea and you should probably get an MRI
I could use an education on this. enlighten me. other than a mash of letters i somewhat recognize, what is zigbee2mqtt?
Ahh.
Yeah I had some GE floods on my Hue Bridge for a bit, and they worked… but needed to be "rebooted" every few days…
it sucked. I junked th em.
what is mqtt?
is that some form of SDR that's used for talking to zigbee devices?
mqtt == message broker
its just a communication protocol
a wireless communication protocol? or like an API?
but you can do so much more with it
Ahh ok.
I use mqtt to tie in 2 other HA instances at remote locations
dont bother with it and just get ZHA, doesnt need mqtt
What's the coordinator in this chain?
I put everything I can in mqtt
esp goes into mqtt
zigbee goes into mqtt
my old car went into mqtt
if I create any custom containers they send via mqtt
USB stick with zigbee chip, aka a hub
if you do decide to go that route I would certainly look into going this route https://smlight.tech/
Oh, it's got an ethernet jack on it?
they can be wifi or lan and even connect through usb
"jack" because ethernet is not a physical standard… but ykwim
That's great because I can't currently connect anything to my HA server on anything other than via ethernet.
We have a local guy here who makes zigbee coordinators with PoE
I can recommend that
omg that would be amazing.
that's like 3 birds with one stone.
It's what I use
4 even.
mine died on me and he sent me a new one for just shipping, so great customer service
what's the unit with serial for? Is it for flashing the device? or debugging the firmware?
yea supporting "local" I guess is what we would call it is always a solid choice too. it's what I use as well here
yes, debug \ flash
just firmware debug, or also debugging the zigbee traffic too?
Just firmware
I've always wanted more of a window into the zigbee traffic.
You can debug the zigbee traffic in mqtt
ahh cool.
What's the diff between the P2 and the P7
you trying to scare them?
p7 has more umph
but it shouldn't matter in most environments
I've had 180ish devices on P2 and still no issues
Nice, that's cool.
Hahaha, that doesn't scare me. Wireshark is my idea of a fun time, so things like this are just like a new video game drop to me. 😂😂😂
I mean, how can you not?!
Then again, I probably work on networks that 2% of people touch
😏 tell me more…
I didn't know you guys talk dirty in here. 😏 😂😂😂
Infiniband, Slingshot, Spectrum 800G I can keep going but you'll get bored
I appear to currently be the NWE expert on Cumulus Linux too
oh fuck off… bruh... you didn't need to flex so hard. 😭 😂
works on the apollo as well
Just wait till I tell you about the 1024 nodes with 8GPUs each I've deployed across 5 sites
…this went from fun to depressing. 😭
Wanna trade lives? 😂
legitimately jealous.
NWE? Nordic Western Europe?
North Western Europe
Well… I always say you should surround yourself with people better than you… I'm just bummed that my symmetrical 8gbps home fiber connection won't impress anyone in here. 😂😭
I've always wanted to mess around with fiberchannel.
Yeah… but I remember the 2003 PowerMac G5 super computer cluster that hit, what was it, number 3? Was interconnected with fiberchannel.
so I've always wanted to mess with it…
But corporate IT doesn't need me to mess with fiber channel, unfortunately.
Oh yeah, for sure.
Still probably more powerful than your smartphone, I'd imagine… but no where near as powerful as modern clusters.
Especially considering I install systems with 6TB RAM these days
so would only take 4 of those to surpass it in memory
bruh, you need to drop an NSFW tag before you mention 8TB of RAM. 😂
how many slots is that?
48x8
yes
But more DIMMs probably means better memory bandwidth?
fuck, the last time I talked about a 512 DIMM, it was 512 Megs…
It's a shame Persistant memory got scrapped though
yeahhhh….
but now we have SCM instead
FYI https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/scm-nvme-ssd-understanding-key-differences-optimal-data-zafar-irfan/
Optane counted as SCM right?
Ish
I'm a bit out of date with all this stuff, because my last job (and my current one) was a startup that, while we scaled, we never really did the big servers ourselves… cloud this and cloud that… even though that's more expensive… 🙄 but whatever...
You should see the storage systems we roll out these days, 192 controllers and 384 disk shelves
AI go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Shit… I need to change careers.
I enjoy the cloud. Nobody asks me to submit a purchase request. I just create instances 🙂
"this API call is my official purchase request"
Hahaha, it is convenient… but $/performance isn't great.
I'll put it into terraform once I'm done testing. I promise
I haven't been in a server room in months now
I prefer my office
Then I tell other people to rack stuff for me
🤷 it's not that expensive. Since we get some special conditions. For reasons
Man, I'd want to rack it myself.
I do sometimes, but since I moved 1400km away from most of my customers, eh
When we'd set up a new office, racking the switches and patching the network was like a celebration… a painful one… but one none the less. 😂
ahhh, fair.
But these days I work across the globe
been doing some installs in the UK, some in germany ,luxemburg and singapore recently
from home
alrighty, as much as I'm enjoying this conversation, it's 3:30 here, and I should get to bed. 😂
CANOODIAN ?
damn straight! 😂
and I have no clue what a mile, inch, furlong, or Fahrenheit is.
I'm not your pall, buddy!
Furlong? Is that talkinga bout animals that need a barber?
fun fact for you, I had a collegue in Canada
that had his own plane, covered by the main office
because he needed to get onsite to remote locations in canada fast
I guess? They must use the hairs as a form of measurement down there in the states. 😂
It is INSANELY big out here…
It's like 5000km across.
news to me
Have you looked at the US customary system? It's a mess!
And all defined in SI units too.
Norway and canada are quite similar in many regards, indiginous people, snow, some midnight sun, lots of trees
Not many people know that the US is legally a metric country… but they use the Customary system to convert everything from metric to garbage.
There is a reason why NASA uses metric
Smaller than it looks though. Thanks Mercator
and the aurora borealis!
True.
because it makes it easier to collab with international institutions...
legit triggered.
I HATE it when people give me garbage units.
Took me a lot of mental gymnastics when I rented a car in Dublin and drove to Belfast, and the dash didn't have dual units
When we were building out our office (for some reason in Canada we use the imperial system in construction, even though it doesn't get taught in school), I demanded they give me all the units in metric.
The construction guys hated it… but I'm not spending time learning useless shit.
gross
it really is gross.
construction and baking are imperial here…
Not by law… but by custom…
no construction using metric sounds insane
wait why?
because fractions it way easier to deal with
can't even imagine using numbers like 2.4 studs lol
plus, let's be real: two by fours haven't been two inches by four inches in like 60 years.
still
at best they are an inch and a half or something disgusting.
its a standard and the term applies
a wrong term…
standard or not…
IDK, I favour accuracy above convenience 9/10 times.
you also don't do it on the daily
if your own construction crews up there prefer imperial.. there's a reason lol
That's fair I guess…
Yea, we don't 😂
I prefer metric when dealing with small stuff.. but anything an inch and larger.. no thanks
well, like legally in canada, everything has to be metric, but they carved out an exception for construction for some reason.
but they switched everything over in like the 70s or something. well before I was born.
and even at that half an inch, 1/8th 1/16.. 3/4.. etc is way easier to throw around
our tape measures have both so it's njot like metric is just not there.. just not preferred for a whole lot of stuff
Well, listen, I've got the kind of tism that makes me want to use metric and SI units as much as possible.
non-american's don't understand that
How to spot sane people
You mean .125, .0625, and .75? 😂
joking aside, I actually do prefer this ^^ I agree it looks a bit more messy and overwhelming, but in practice, I don't feel like it is.
but then again, in all sincerity, I'm the kind of person who would rather write 0.333… instead of 1/3.
and would rather do math with .333… over 1/3 too.
over time you wouldn't lol
likely end up with you writing something noone else would understand lol
shrug before I write 1/3rd cm or 0.3cm I'll write 3mm
something the rest of the world would understand
Fractions are just not an issue when your measures align with your numbers
Ha! Jokes on you. No one understands anything I say or do already!
😂
yeah, it's true like SAE vs metric bolts.
They just made the bolts align to the metric units.
the biggest issue is that other countries really don't have to look at imperial in every day stuff.. a side by side compare constantly. american's have had to do that with literally every measuring device we have lol
tabarnak!
shit it's 4:00, what happened. 😂😂😂
OK, I really do need to go. 😂😂😂
Night night all!
thanks for the good info and the fun conversation!

this is going to be a rather interesting 4 years lol
this is a good watch

Hello guys. I installed the home assistant on the orbstack program (docker) of Mac. Then I installed xiaomi home in HA and added xiaomi devices. I can control the xiaomi device in HA. But I want to connect to apple homekit. I installed homekit bridge, but there was no response when I scanned the code to add it on the iPhone. Can't add
Anyone can help me?
