Unless you've got an EV with no battery minder(at which point... why...), they can keep the battery warm in the cold and keep it functional. Though my favorite battery fuckup is, again, a tesla...
See, EVs still need a 12v battery because all of the off the shelf components for cars like the lights, dash equipment, etc, is made for a 12 v system.
Tesla in their infinite stupid decided that not having a battery minder for the 12v is a good idea. Which means it can't trickle charge the 12v from the main battery while the car is offline.
Which means not only does the 12v battery die if left off for a month or so...
it's also located in the front trunk... which can only be accessed by an electric lock. Powered by the 12v.
They thought "hey, we can get around that problem by putting jump leads on the fender"...
Trouble is, if you drop a 12v lead acid battery below 50% state of charge? It's dead. It will almost never take a charge ever again.
thats not covered by warranty
Seriously, every single little thing you find out about the "disruptor engineering" of a tesla is like... why. Just... why.
why is it draining the battery so fast in the first place
it's hard to compete with non lemon ICE vehicles. my biggest expense on my 2004 truck is 1600 for a fuel line replacement.. second biggest is replacing all 4 tires at same time
Keeping the radios online for the electric doors, sentry mode, dash stuff, about 100 other energy vampire things. Which are kinda just a thing with all cars these days sadly.
(LOOKING AT YOU, HONDA.)
maintaining a car costs money who would have guessed that
EV batteries like over 16K and "have" to be replaced every 8 or so years
I mean, they really don't, unless you buy a really bad one. XD
(cough tesla cough)
But yeah, that honda thing was especially dumb. The Android system stayed on standby at all times in the dash.
they really don't? what does that mean? no battery packs last forever lol
So did the radio receiver for the proximity detection for the keyfob. And the USB charging. With a stock battery, you can kill a 10th gen Civic battery by leaving your phone charging.
lithium has a shelf life of about 10 years
Heh. So lots to unpack there.
its kinda sad to not see more hydrogen/cng in development so you arent driving around a ton of weight
For starts, it's not that batteries last forever, it's the construction, for one. For two, lithium is lithium no matter how old it is. What you have to worry about is it oxidizing. Which is prevented by the adhesives used in making the cells.
we're talking about products placed in vehicles.. not theoritical applications lol
Electric cars make sense when you can fit it all - monthly cost, electric cost, charging and so on. fuel here is like 18sek/l divide by 10-11 to get euro/usd and then if you drive like 100km a day with kids to school - work - shopping so on.
Really cheap battery cells(envelope style, used in phones and laptops), the adhesive tends to fail due to thermal stress within about 4 years, give or take.
EVs don't use envelope style cells though. They use cans, which are much more stable in their construction.
Note for you guys: the chemical reaction is way different now than it used to be
So batterys last very long
they make sense for someone who drives a whole lot
and can charge at home ๐
it's the only way to stay ahead of the degredation
That's the other cool thing about Evs... if your battery fails in 10 years... the battery you replace it with will invariably be better than stock.
But the sad part is that batteries cost more than a new car sometimes
Tech will advance, so whatever new cell they build will be better than whatever came before.
Battery + labour
i think to remember seeing a company make fast chargers with energy storage for low capacity grid placements
Depends. For ref, a fully new Ioniq 5 battery will set you back about 2.5 grand.
that seems to become interesting
Oh only ๐ฎ
Which is a tiny cost compared to the entire car XD
Like I said earlier though, with that battery block, you don't HAVE to replace the whole thing. You can take it apart and replace individual cells.
And people go all FUD over the battery potentially failing... while forgetting that almost nothing else can fail. Electric motors are solid.
ICE cars... engines fuck up all the time.
all in all
Most people dont have 30k$-60k$ to buy a new car
Also car loans can be sketchy AF
companies havent noticed that
So buy used ๐คฏ
Yeah, that's the tricky part.
Bargain
25k$
But honestly, for most EV batteries, the most expensive part of working on them is gonna be the labor surprisingly.
why would you pay for it to spy on you
(since it needs the lift and someone with the proper certs for electrical)
Electric car 2nd hand market really needs to go way lower for it to be worth, insurance companies fuck you over
i guess people pay for yt with ads aswell so i could see them doing that
As soon as it leave warranty insurance can be 1-2k$ a year
if you know how to drive rear wheel drive is actually better in winter than front wheel...
front wheel drive is just cheaper to make and gives more space inside the car
Better how? The moment your rear wheels are off centre, you're fighting against the movement of the car.
Also one of my favorite thing is talking to EV mechanics with experience. Once they know what they're doing, they love working on EVs because you basically Can't get your hands dirty other than the occasional rats nest XD
Pulling the car along behind the wheels that do the steering is 100% better in winter.
We all know the best steering in the winter is two massive steel helical drills.
your wheels have a given friction budget. turning and traction eat from the same budget on a front wheel drive.
Not every car does, you're right.
I do have AWD.
lol the most driven car in my state is the Subaru Outback. We've got four wheel drive covered. XD
with rear wheel drive, when your rear comes out a little the rear wheels are actually cooperating with your steering
And if they come out more than a little?
(I'm thinking of the hundreds of BMW drivers I've watched struggle in the snow)
better than a front wheel drive just plowing straight ahead when it loses traction
you just need to go fast, the faster you go the less physics apply
I can't say I've ever struggled to get a FWD car back under control from a skid.
(Also the general rule in the snow and the mud is as follows. Don't make ANY change quickly. Don't Stop fast, don't speed up fast. Do either and you're gonna take a ride.)
if you struggle to get it back you are skidding wrong
Glad I'm skidding right then ๐
of course front heavy rear wheel drives have a problem
I mean, skid right enough and you'll make a left eventually so you're set.
they need bags of sand in the rear during winter
We used to put litter in the back of the lincoln my folks had.
thats just what old people who lost the fun of ruining a car in a parking lot would say
Great big bags of cat litter.

"if you smell bacon then stop holding the hot end"
works for me lol
just now updated Z2M and was sweating the whole time lol
where can i find the rules
what for
this discord
#rules ?
like no spamming or smt
This is interesting
found it
Where was it?
Zigbee2mqtt container -> webui doesnt work from time to time but the logs says nothing
not had that issue
I run both the addon on one HA and z2m as it's own container on another machine.. going to be updating that one next
the stand alone container should be a breeze i'm hoping
the addon however threw me a curve ball
third reality is confusing me with all these updates they keep pushing for thier zigbee stuff. just going to update one plug and see what happens before updating anything else cause I haven't had any issues so not sure what the updates are even doing lol
if it works why update
exactly

but why all the updates
i wish they provided decent ones
well I guess they do somewhat
who needs support for hubitat
their stuff looks super tuya like
third reality?
yep
they kind of reminded me on linkind when I first got them but they have actually been pretty solid
only issue so far is the tilt sensor in the mailbox but I think that is an alkaline battery in sub temps issue not anything with the device itself
like
ah they even sell on amazon
Anyone got some recommendation on termostats?
they do however absolutely look like tuya plugs
pref cheap ones
the people in #1284966353798697001 for sure
yea if your looking for something HA friendly there are tons of posts and even forum threads about them
cant wait for shelly to make zigbee plugs
then all the the crap gear can go away thank you very much
shelly has been pretty solid too
also they dont make bulky ones
so far of all the "smart home" stuff I connect with HA shelly and third reality have been the best. My tuya zigbee stuff hasn't been bad but it's tuya so bleh lol
I did order one of those usb sonoff adapaters out of curisoity so I guess i'll see how that goes
i had a couple of nous plugs with a 2/5 failures, aquara with 1/1 and shelly with 2/16
@clear ferry that you?
who else?
just not really a fan of aqura. I love how small the door sensors are but the whole contectivity with them (at least the ones i have) just sucks
this isnt atx, you easily be misstaken but those racks contain no gpus for 500kw per tower
the temp sensors i enjoy

I have some of the newer zigbee 3.0 versions to try out when I get home next week. The 1.0 versions are going in the trash.
cool, thanks for that. somehow my google-fu was failing me today. couldn't even get the novelty ones with lighting coming up. 170 yoyos for a shower head though - I guess you get what you pay for
completly random that i saw one recently when looking for something else
hey - you get polar bear animation! totally worth โฌ170
ah typical! interesting stuff always comes up when you're looking for something else.

65 quid instead
but why
and works with any shower head. and you can see the display while showering
but that's cold water, right?
interesting

It would be cool if you could set a range to the map view like you can with the History tab
yes, I was more thinking about being able to see your route around a city on a specific day for example
like "oh i was in that place on august 13th, let's see what I did there"
that just crashes java script
and pins my servers cpu for a good minute while it tries to load the data
oh I store data for 3 years
so that causes problems for doing that
wdum
Careful, you might summon Jorg's grump
interesting
that still isn't what I'm after though, I'd basically like to be able to filter the map view
I just told it to load a months worth of location data
It responded with this
and has locked up my browser
shall I Just tell it to show me three years and see what dies first, my server or my chromium derived ram vaccum

its temperamental as hell but its cool!
Fine I guess this is memes now lol

You bought a new AMD duron II system you say
I asked for the forums to be upgraded and now they are and the font changed and I hate that I asked for this now.
...okay but actually this would be useful in medical offices. XD
Fun fact, first gen duron didn't have thermal throttling at all, I removed the cpu cooler during load and the cpu split in two 5s afterwards
Seriously, my favorite example of the issue of quantum results being altered by observation is "Let me count the number of breaths you take in the next minute".
I have always hated that, because yeah, manual breathing happens Immediately when they say that XD

I agree fellow human, it is apologetic
Could be worse. You could be running Arch

chromebook
yeah, i am not sure my setup is quite up to medical office standards but the concept could be used probably
But, why?
Part of me would love to get some NUCs for purpose built stuff like an emubox or something, but like.... clutter... also money, but clutter...
then again, my colleagues actually like the chromebooks
especially the family integration / parental controls
(like, a semi-decent NUC might be great for making an arcade cabinet. But also I can't be arsed.)
I like having a local environment when I'm on shitty internet trains
though the crosvm on the more powerful chromebooks could mostly work
chrome docker..?
hm, the one (well, second) time I want to use the support section, it seems like it's currently undergowing a rework
has anyone noticed their dashboard is slower since the latest graph card UI chance / update?
pretty much
I haven't started reworks yet.
Hm, then I'll have to convince discord to not hide everything from me
ahh, unselecting and reselecting the thingy in id:customize helped. odd
Yeah, some people need to do this thing.
It's stupid, because I definitely have the support channels set up in the onboarding settings.
Yes! I have been wondering the same. Rebooting HA helps for a moment. Also migrated away from raspberry as thought my SD-card is going to die but didn't speed up anything.
I've got it running on a xeon with a SSD, sooo it's definitely not hardware ๐
I've done zero troubleshooting / debugging, but I've noticed that the graph cards are much slower to load when reloading the tab or when switching between dashboards
it's like it has to re-draw all of the points for each line
Yeah I have it now also on pretty fast hardware. Also wasn't sure if it is wifi or something, but haven't found the reason other than it feels slow.
Sometimes feels that even loading the lamp icons on my lamp control dashboard is slow
I noticed the graph cards now have "pages", switching between the pages is real slow, like 1-2 seconds after clicking the arrow
yea, I used to be able to see them before as well
ohh, Community also has more channels
Just in time for me to mess with them on you.
๐คท just move my thread to the proper destination
I wish Discord would build that in.
D:
Curious if there are any HA/NC events planned for SXSW this year.
O yeah. And you cant make a cut past bot because you cant temper the user name
I feel like a HA event at SXSW would be weird. Wouldn't the event be at home?
I mean, it's called Home assistant, not Convention/Music Festival/Hipster Hell assistant...
(sorry, I was born in austin, SXSW is my personal HELL.)
Austin: "We're the live music capitol of the world!"
Event runners: "Cool, we'll run a huge music event in your town!"
Austin: "Neat, to showcase all the live artists we have local in Austin, right?"
Event runners: (smug grin)
Austin: "...right?"
We found out that there are a surprising amount of A/V professionals who use HA for controlling venues.
It's not designed for commercial installations like this, but people get it working.
The idea of trying to use HA to run everything makes my teeth itch.
i guess if your alternate is scripting something together that talks to various things then HA makes alot f sense
Some are using it for hotels, for running nuclear reactors,... all kind of stuff.
Seriously. Running the board was a trial all on its own full of stupid issues. One of the theaters I worked had a board that didn't reset switch states if you turned it off, i.e. if you moved a slide while it was off, it wouldn't be in the new position in power when you turned it on. Which caused all SORTS of hell.
But I would still prefer it over HA.
I suspect nuclear reactors is a stretch goal
DGMW I love what HA is trying to do, but holy shit, imagine trying to coordinate a show reliably on HA is.... no. NO. BAD.
And I didn't even do music shows. XD Imagine trying to run a timing board of a few dozen lights and three battons on a HA system...
There can be some weird setups, but for most of the world, yes
Seriously that thought TERRIFIES me.
(Fun behind the scenes thing for everyone here, music shows have a metronome and count-off playing in the Drummer's ear the entire time. That count-off is synced to the lights, pyrotechnics, and basically Everything else on a program.
Imagine all of those things trying to keep in sync on a HA pi.)
Just use the power dashboard
It'll take care of things ๐
Can it send the roomba out to clean up once things go a little bit explody?
No it'll close the giant lead doors
Then send out the roomba
Safety first
...okay but that for some reason made me wonder if there's a smart geiger counter that can sync to HA...
"3.6 roentgen. Not great, not terrible."
Heh.
I've wanted to set up air quality monitoring and moisture monitoring, but then I remember that my signal density is a BIT high. Also money. XD
(Airthings makes one, but it's like 110 bucks.)
Also I have no idea if HA has airthings integration.
My next purchase is (list overflow, list too long, money too short)
Dumb jokes aside, my primary purchase need right now is a 4u case for the main PC, a 12u rack for the PC and server, and maybe some drives.
As for smart home things Specifically.... An air quality monitor would be nice.
You assume they are holding these on Pi devices lol.
Because almost everyone has a pi, it's easy to setup and it always works because it's only 1 platform
It's not so hard to guess
Because almost everyone has a pi
Out of the people that have a Pi, they all have a Pi. Out of the general population, almost no-one has one.
Yeah, mini PCs all the way. So much more processing power, and for such little power supply.
I think that's their business model working as expected, iirc. They prioritise educational schemes, and what's left for general availability is just what's left and intentionally priced higher to subsidise the former.
All the more reason for people to get a mini PC... unless they want to knowingly buy overpriced, underpowered equipment to support a good cause.
cries in 12u... at least its deep and i use front and back on some of it
They're literally set up as a registered charity with the primary goal of promoting STEM. https://www.raspberrypi.org/about/
I have 12U and the back isn't accessible ๐ข
(the rack had to go in the crawl space under the house so it's an IP45 rated outdoor weatherproof rack)
But it fits all the things I really need; a short-depth server, UPS, switch, and more than enough patch panel space for our relatively small house
mine is on wheels and i can pull it out of its cupboard to work on it
Giant heavy steel box: https://dynamix.co.nz/rodw12-600fk
mines a startech. cant remember the model. sec ill find a photo
Please, please, please write. I fucking hate that so much stuff is clickbaity YouTube videos now. It's so hard to find good written stuff.
Those seem to be pretty popular. Unfortunately our house comes from an era of tiny wardrobes and basically zero other cupboard space (aside from the one with the hot water cylinder in it), nowhere I could have put anything like that (and certainly not anywhere that I wouldn't have to listen to it)
yeah i got lucky someone local was getting rid of one cheap. and it fit under the stairs nicely
I'm sure what you're already doing is interesting to someone.
i also have a rack on wheels. about the same height as my washing machine and dryer. so it fits nicely under the bench in my laundry room. ๐
A 12u would be fine for what I need. I'm setting it up under my desk to be honest, if I set up a full height, it'd involve a bit more fiddling and a LOT more wire silliness. Yay crappy apartment living.
Crappy pictures due to lack of lighting under the house when I installed it.
Six compression glands drilled through the bottom; three 16mm for power cables (1 in, 2 out; there's an outlet upstairs connected to the UPS in the rack and another spare for later), 10mm which has the microduct for the FTTH connection (ONT is inside the cabinet) and two 25mm (fit 7x Cat6 each)
(if there are any high priced millionaires in the chat who want to buy me a nice custom built house, I would not say no. ๐ XD )
< is a viner.
It's a fun little program. Mind you, 90% of what you get is hot garbo, but hey. I got my server case from it. XD
That said, it's invite only, so it's not really something you can "try" without that.
As low as 90% garbage? You must be lucky
I mean, one of the things they sent me was literally a 16 bay hot swap 4u case. XD
And another was a smart air conditioner XD
"air conditioner" because absolutely just a swamp cooler, ja?
Nope, Proper compressor loop heat exchanger portable AC with the hose and all.
Shit, now that I didn't expect
Single or double hose?
(don't make me link the Technology Connections video ๐คฃ )
Though I will say it has some... silly... features.
My other AC(a delonghi) turns on instantly. The dreo? Slowly turns on one system at a time. And has a 12 second countdown to turn off.
Also the louvres are carbon fiber patterned.
Which.... I mean.... sure, why not. XD
It's obvious. It makes it... cooler.
For reference though, if you're thinking about getting on vine, the first six months is basically probationary, so you can't get anything over 100 in value to review, so you won't get the big cool stuff.
Also it's FCFS and there are a LOT of people on the program, so the chance of getting the good things is surprisingly low. There was an NVME I was gonna use to fix something in the server up on it and in the time it took me to see it posted and click on the button, it'd already gotten scooped up by too many people and was no longer available.
heh.
I mean, you do get to keep them forever(or throw them away). XD
Yeah, that's been a bit of back and forth for sure. Lots of Tuya stuff. Which DOES work with HA(waiting for missy to come running, I said the word)... XD
well, I say "lots", but it's more "It shows up a bunch"
That said, I now have what can charitably be described as way too many camera batteries and knockoff airtags...
I don't think I've ever seen a robot vac. But I DID completely repair my roomba with parts only obtained by vine stuff. XD
(new battery, new brushes, etc)
Also if you're a car guy, vine could be useful. Seriously. My front page is inundated with car parts every single day and I hate it. XD
Just at a glance, there're posts for brake pad for like 12 different model-years of car...
heh. You say motorcycles.... Today they tried to get me to review motorcycle helmets twice. I do not ride. Or drive.
I don't know that I'd trust amazon for a helmet ๐
Though speaking of that, they also have "DOT Approved" stickers for helmets. So you can basically do a fraud...
Oh amazon. ๐
Rainbow ๐ and sunshine my dude!
All humor aside, I will say that most of what vine would offer is not even remotely good. And not even "Fun to tinker with" type bad. Lots and lots of keyboard cases for ipads, obscure batteries, KVM switches that fail within 24 hours every single times, new earpieces for headsets of very specific makes and models... That sort, in the electrical side of things.
also a Skibidi Toilet faux-lego set. Which should be enough to dissuade anyone, really.
What do you do with obscure batteries?
I went with a 12U rack wall-mounted in a closet. Works well and with custom 3d prints, it's easy to get some good density of devices.
You either have something that takes them, or you don't ๐
The thought of wallmounting a server gives me that pre-panic feel. XD
Less dust!
Luck into having a few things that take them. XD
The nas on the shelf below the rack sits on those anti-vibration washing machine pads. We've had a ~5M earthquake and it didn't move, but I've considered putting a strap around it to really boost the warm and fuzzy factor.
Oh, yeah, full depth ruins it. This is only a half depth rack, so it takes some creativity to stick to that form factor.
Seriously, just thinking of having to try and anchor that much weight is just... oh god. XD
yeah, I'm with ya on that.
I searched high and low for a half-depth rack-mount case that would fit in my rack and hold six 3.5" drives and just kept coming up short (well, long, in reality).
Definitely recommend it. Best thing is that file servers really don't need top end hardware. Get the old ATX board from your last PC rebuild and throw it in.
Good thing about it is you don't have to worry about manufacturers not making updates for their NAS systems anymore.
that 4u?
so, that's where the Silverstone CS351 won over... compact enough to sit on that metal shelf under the rack. That's lagged into the studs, so it's not going anywhere.
Yeppers.
Mine's on a 7th gen I7 with some... problems. Half the PCI-E lanes are dead, the GPU's hard locked because of a bad core, and it really really doesn't like me.
But since I don't ask it to do anything other than run files and occasionally transcode, it's fine with it XD
with big gpus i would love to find good 5u cases
tall cards with power connectors on top can get tight in 4u
It's got an old 970. Glitchy but it runs. And the plus side is, horizontal case, so sag is not a problem anymore.
My rack I posted pictures of up there is close to 50kg empty, has two UPS in it that weigh about 20kg each, plus switch/server/misc. Gotta be ~110kg total.
But it's hanging from a double 150x50 floor joist with two M14x75 coach bolts, so definitely ain't going anywhere
The thing I had to replace was actually the CPU cooler. Had one of those tallboi coolers with a vertically mounted 120mm. Was too tall for the case. XD
server currently has a 1650 which does transcodes just fine. want to do ai stuff. and also considering having a rack at my desk with my main desktop in it
Vine had sent me a water cooler but I didn't wanna chance that, so I got a cheap low profile cooler instead and it works fine.
aren't even 1060s fine for transcodes?
sure, but a more modern intel CPU with igpu will do it better/lower power.. ๐
i imagine so. they might not do 265 though.
Typically - for most brands of GPUs - the video encoder doesn't substantially differ between the low-end and high-end models of any given generation
having a card with an av1 encoser on it might be nice too
The high-end one in Nvidia's case often has more encoders, but the basic unit of the thing doesn't change
I only recently have found a need to transcode at all... so I'm considering putting a GPU in the nas for that.
and I was eyeballing the 1060 because $cheap
its even better if you can just use a semi-modern intel board..
I'll be honest, I don't bother with transcoding 99% of the time so at some point I might just pull the GPU out of the server and make it run solely on the integrated. Even though that makes me cringe a little.
I think people like the Intel A310 (if you can find one) for that sort of thing these days.
But the Intel iGPUs do a great job
my new builds on a I7-14650HX mobile cpu.. that thing can do virtualized gpus with proxmox and fly. ๐
my nas has a xeon e-2144g
I'm sorry.
2 would be all i need... i only share my library with 2 folks and they're the only ones needing transcoding
That has an iGPU with QSV, unless you've got a situation where you can't pass it through to a VM because it's the machine's only video output, should be able to use it for transcoding
thanks! i'll add that to the comparison spreadsheet :)
Oh you'll love this by the way.
One of the things on the vine stack right now... a UPS for a wifi router.
Because famously, when the power goes out, you really, REALLY want your wifi to stay on. Even though nothing else can.'
ah wait thats coffee lake.. not even that terribly old.. ๐
๐ค i need to dig in more, then... i only hit this issue this week where there were 2 transcodes going on and the machine was practically crippled
I love how they advertise it too.
yeah that should do some transcodes. Intelยฎ UHD Graphics P630
"Seamless switching so you can continue to enjoy streaming media when the power goes out"...
is that the eaton one with li-ion batteries?
Streaming from WHERE, ya silly gooses!?
It's a generic letter-jumble. XD
Per wikipedia
Version 6 (Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Whiskey Lake, Comet Lake)
The Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake, Whiskey Lake and Comet Lake microarchitectures implementation adds full fixed-function H.265/HEVC 10-bit 4:2:0 decoding and encoding acceleration, and full fixed-function VP9 8-bit and 10-bit decoding acceleration and 8-bit encoding acceleration.[16][17]
So no AV1, but h.265 at least
ah, the ol' 5 letter brand
i am wondering if they will do a high vram model in their new range
Usually 8, but yes. XD
thanks! appreciate that. i'll have to review the tautulli logs and look at the specifics of what was being done.
I was using my Ecoflow battery to run my laser printer last time we had a power outage.
My partner had D&D that afternoon, and I had two dozen pages of character sheets and other BS to print for it ๐
I don't know if it's specific to number of reviews or how many people find the reviews helpful tbh.
that'd be such a comically easy way for them to grab some market share from nvidia. ๐คฃ
"yeah here's a 64 gb model for like a grand."
XD One of these days I need to tell you about the 16/600 that would not run out of toner no matter how hard I tried. XD
exactly this, would become home llm running default option
although i think 32 is more likely
I am excited that more smaller and smaller UPSs are coming to market, to be honest. I have a standby generator (mountain living with frequent outages), so I only need about 10-30 seconds of UPS life. We have a handful of 425VA UPSs laying around.... would love for them to be smaller.
but 64 would be tasty
I printed SO many character sheets. And entire source books(in a time when there were like 1000 homebrew sourcebooks out there every week). And so many other stupid things. All on a printer made in the early 90s that somehow still ran just fine even though the lights dimmed every time it started a print job. XD
(until we finally get whole house batteries going)
๐
I'd love to get some of those big block batteries like that, but mostly because the wiring in my house is faulty and really REALLY does not like my strobes in the studio XD
my new server's battery backup system. ๐
(DC-ATX power supply + DC UPS)
skip the double-conversion mess that is most normal ups's.. hook up whatever lithium cells I want.. etc. ๐
and about.. 50ah of LifePo4 cells.. Waiting on aliexpress delivery for the BMS modules.
Good chem for stability. May be a bit lower for power density, but those things'll keep a charge on the shelf forever.
done the math.. at low-ish power draw it should run for 10hrs
https://batteryhookup.com/products/12-8v-50ah-640wh-lifepo4-battery-4s-12v
" They can handle 50a discharge and 25a charge."
These batteries are balanced and every battery we tested was above 50ah. They were overstock from a large project and come with the balance leads. Very easy to add a BMS. You can series as many of these as you want then you can add a BMS. Before series connecting you should top balance each module first. Each battery c
considering my DC UPS and supply is limited to 20a..
I think I'll survive. ๐
When you're not putting it in a vehicle, the energy density should always be second place concern imho
when its not mobile*
I mean I'm building my entire case setup 3d printed right now.. ๐
Yeah, it should work fine XD
NAS/server will be the upper portion
UPS/power the lower portion
this is the DC-ATX power supply
12-48v input, steps it down for PC usage. ๐
LTO (lithium titanate) is an even cooler chemistry if you need something with massive discharge capability, but they're super weird (2.3V nominal) and even worse density
(If you ever feel like looking into battery silliness, Aging Wheels/Under Dunn on youtube does incredibly silly things with batteries basically always.)
and suffers for it
as we saw in his recent update video
whomp whomp. ๐
Oh he does. But it's delightful. XD
As it is, someone local was selling a Citicar and part of me really wished I had the money so I could buy it for him and deliver it all the way to his place just so I could see him suffer with it XD
I see you got a 5090 too
not been looking at any of that stuff.. those drop yet?
hell if i know .. i can't afford that stuff
i was actually going to use my bonus check that I was going to get this year to buy a new PC .. but instead they fired me
ouch
well if you do ever get enough and looking for prebuilt. i been pretty happy with my microcenter one for about4-5 years now
i'll never buy something like a dell again
dells used to be coveted, even before that "dude you're getting a dell!" guy
wish they would build a microcenter up here north
hate having to make that long drive down there lol
and they tease me with those free 128gb mem card emails all the time
i actually need to swing in there tonight to pick up a couple of SD cards
the weather is going to be crap for the next week, so I might as well line up some projects
you two should meet up and duke it out
no garage to lock them in?
they wont go inthere
well you have to build them up to wanting to go in there like putting food in there lol
i dont need the mice in there, because mice in there means mice in the rest of the house, and I dont feel like replacing my stove again
or I could just keep doing what i've been doing.. these two little shits have survived all the polar vortexes since 2021
they have a shelter somewhere else ..they have to because they dont shelter at my place all the time
strays will have several places
i have like three within range. ๐
well then give us one
just put one on the missouri side so I dont have to deal with KS traffic
they idiots ๐ฆ
? where you are.. you shouldn't be able to tell a diffrence lol
new york/jersey ones. lul
my drive to work involves Red Bridge Rd crossing into KS which becomes College Blvd
lol my girl used to work at that red bridge ymca
I can't wait for the new microcenter to open here. We have a local chain that carries a lot of great stuff, but it's just not the same as microcenter.
the drive Red Bridge Rd drive .. easy.. beautiful... as soon as I cross into KS it becomes a nightmare of self-important wholly-impatient, and dangerous driving, combined with a terrible set of badly timed lights that just aggravates the drivers even more
I use to think like that then I drove past the Iowa state line one day
like if you dont redline your engine coming from a dead stop after waiting for the light to turn green, the guy behind you is swooping around you
Is filtering legal there yet?
Are people generally obliging to it at least? After a decade of lane splitting in CA, I had to do 2 yrs in NYC/NJ for work and was lane splitting there and it seemed people trying to murder me for it was not uncommon, heh
Filtering is obviously less prone to that
Yeah, that's a bonus.
My cat just scared the shit out of me.
In CA, drivers will part the sea of traffic for you if they see you coming. We're very spoiled.
I have on noise cancelling headphones and was turned around typing on my iPad at my desk, my cat comes up behind me, stretches up and taps his paw on my back.
I definitely yelped and jumped a little. ๐
Shithead cat.
"hey. human. I need pets. hey. you."
That's exactly what he wanted.
But I scared him when I jumped and yelled. ๐คฃ
I don't even know if I scared my son or husband yelling because I can't hear them.
I have a crappy "Gaming chair". It has holes right where the shoulders are.
My cat LOVES tappy-tapping my shoulder through the holes.
Also his usual want is "Can you put on pants so I can get in your lap please?"
here lane splitting isn't legal but almost nobody minds. you just have to be very careful with those very few jerks who actually try to block you.
funny thing is, police would take them down way harder for endangerment than they would with the lane splitting biker.
Which is very cute... except he's a hair shy of like 20 pounds. He's not particularly Fat, he's just very tall and long. Like someone took the free transform tool and just set everything to 200%.
most cars actually make room for lane splitters here
i had an nypd cop act as if i had just murdered a school bus full of children as i lane split past him. dude was screaming on the loudspeaker that he was going to hunt me down and find me.
lane splitting is safer than motorcyclists sitting in traffic
there's science to that
Explain your thoughts here
out of curiosity, where is "here"?
it's simple. you are riding between multiple two vehicles at close proximity. all it takes is one wrong move between 3 objects to cause an accident
I mean sure, but it should only be happening at low speeds
not to mention when riders "lane split" coming up on an intersection view is heavily restricted
yea well, when you make something legal people stretch that
every time
norway
besides it varies by state on lane splitting allowances
having the other vehicle next to you is one of the things that makes it more safe. if a motorcycle is in between lanes 1 and 2, the lane 1 driver sees the lane 2 driver more readily than the motorcyclist.
also, when a motorcycle is stopped behind a car in traffic, it's very common that the person coming up to the stop gauges their stopping distance against the car in front of the motorcycle and not the motorcycle, thereby rear ending the motorcycle
it has only really reduced rear end collisions for obvious reasons but that is just one statistic
they use to argue not wearing a helmet increased visibility and awareness so some states allowed riding without a helmet and it took years to revert that lol
ok 3 states still allow helmetless riding
what?
18?
there are only 18 states that have universal helmet laws
(this is one of the reasons i refuse to have an AMA membership... they lobby against helmet laws way too much)
you should definitely always protect your cpu
well a good chunk of those states you wouldn't ride amotorcycle in anyways
such as?
alaska..
alaska has some fantastic riding
I would 1000% ride Alaska
some of my best riding memories are in alaska!!
it's a huge destination to ride to the arctic circle
Have you been? Itโs pretty damn nice in the summer
i had a bad accident on pedal bike and the way that helmet looked afterwards... my head would definitely not be in a good way afterwards without it
so many motorcyclists make bucket list trips up through the yukon and all the way up across the "ice road truckers" road and into the arctic circle
not to mention alot of those states according to that list restrict it to mopeds
Yeah alwaaaays wear a helmet. Zero exceptions.
that's my point. they don't require helmets on motorcycles.
seriously, helmet laws in the US are severely lacking
yea well we got lane splitting too
and our helmet certification standards are even lower
DOT tests are useless for real world safety
if it's not going to make sense on some aspects, why should it on others i suppose
Gotta get dot/snell/and ec certain
Certs
snell has been neutered, too :( they caved to the US market
I didnโt know that, damnit
so, some snell certs are still good
but you have to have a spreadsheet to cross ref with as you shop
Iโm in the market now and itโsโฆ. A pain in the butt
I hear ya... I loathe shopping for a new lid every 5 yrs. especially with them changing the head shapes more frequently now.
ece 22.06 i think is the certification required here
For my street helmet, I'll usually buy 2 at a time and let one sit in the closet so I can get 10 yrs between shopping. but track orgs check manufacture dates, so you need a fresh one for tech inspection.
Thatโs mainly what Iโm looking at/for, seems to be the most complete standard
This isnโt a bad idea at all
Especially if you find something you really like
i seem to have a head that fits classic arai shape
helmets expire cause the foam inside breaks down. dosen't matter if you wear it or not
and whatever that coating some helmets have degrades and turns sticky
Not my experience with Arai unfortunately ๐
my biggest (literally) problem is finding one that is large enough for my thick head
get a half helmet
Yes. Love how quiet their stuff is but I can never get a good enough fit
Perfect to hold your brain in when you crash!
depending how fast you normally go they would work just fine
no, i ride a motorcycle, not a harley ๐
well see
if I was still riding i'd probably get one of those full frontal lift helmets even if they do look too british to me
The modular ones Sonoma?
what do you guys ride? honda vf1000r here
yea
my icon is my current bike i'm going to be selling
I had a bmw k75s then a bmw 1150rt and just ordered a Honda nx500 because I want something for commuting thatโs easier (and cheaper) to work on.
Heaaavy!
putting normal full facials on your head especially when you wear glasses suck
context
Youโre not wrong!
i was thinking something in the 350 to 500 range for commuting, but then home office became a thing after covid
hardly been to the office since
kind of feel bad. i bought a new icon helmet and only got to wear it twice before I stopped riding lol
The vf1000r is a cool bike, but I canโt handle being bent over like that for more than an hour
And Iโm going back to in office for the first time in 6 years, so I better have some fun on the way to and from
its more than just your back too.. you feel it it in your legs and even your hands start to cramp up likely from the restricted blood flow from being in the cradle position too long
For sure
it's also a heavy bike. and not nearly rigid enough for its power and weight. but i do love that engine. it has so much low end grunt.
When I test drove the Honda I was reminded how much fun smaller engines can be
The 500 not yours lol
i've had a triumph tt600. fun bike. exceptional handling. but that constant gearing... i don't want to always feel like i am racing
600cc is pretty much the min. anything lower is like a childs toy lol
i had an F4i once.. I outgrew that thing so fast it wasn't even funny
the smaller bikes are awesome for taking your test on tho
shows up on a 50cc minibike
that feeling of accelerating up through the gears to 120km/h on that 600. then i got the vf1000r and a flick of the wrist - and you are doing 120 with no drama.
I think that is what we were allowed when I got licensed in New England
Iโm the kind of person that figures out how to have the same amount of fun on a 1200 as a class 3 e-bike ๐คฃ
if ebikes didn't look so bad and sit so weird I think one of those might be fun
They are a blast
even harley can't get the bike to look and sit right with eletric lol
the triumph tiger 900 looks nice. the 1200 is just too heavy for offroading
I have a cargo version and I made a custom trailer mount for it that lets me tow one of these: https://gorillamade.com/product/gcg-7/
you know lawnmowers work too
Yeah, I use this to tow my nieces and nephews around town (or help with town cleanups). Itโs ridiculous, but fun.
Lots of bmw people get the 900 tiger over the 800 gs from bmw for touring
Theyโre nice bikes
i used to ride one of these too
that looks ancient
i've only ever rode one of those once in my life. always wondered how it felt hitting a hidden log lol
the hidden bushes are the problem. where you sink.
that thing was a workhorse, but it was heavy
and a hell to dig out
I bet
it was made from actual metal.. not this crap they refer to as metal these days
we used it to pull each other up the nearby mountains on alpine skis .
2 or 3 kids on a long rope. one sitting on the rear seat holding his skis.
Sounds like a blast
๐โโ๏ธ
I can't be the first one to google this right? I love that color
you gotta consider adjacent searches
hexcode colors can also be translated into Pantone colors
which will lead you to: https://pioneerworks.org/broadcast/club-med-adderall
I wish each one of those colors had a wiki page explaining the subtext behind the name choice hahaha
those arent real pantone colors
they should be
that 2nd link actually includes the story as to why Joshua picked that named and color code
What naming convention do most people use for devices/entities?
I name things mostly as their location and the device type.
Kitchen extender
Garage exit
Chris closet light
what_where_descriptor
switch_diningroom_pendant
remote_battery_guestroom_scenecontroller
shade_livingroom_frontyard
Yamaha fj-09, KTM 390 Duke, Suzuki dr650 here. The fj replaced my '93 vfr flyin fridge.
I just name things the way the voices tell me
Great my entire zigbee network just up and died.
Hopefully you practice Buddhism...
The new Elden Ring is awesome
Played the network test beta tonight
Itโs a multiplayer co op roguelike dark souls game
lmao this is fascinating
anyone play the new civ yet? I tried 5 when it came out and didn't like it, I always just boot up 3 or 4 if I'm feeling like that sort of game
I don't know why but for some reason, my brain flashed that line as being in some sort of nonsense game journo posting.
It's like all the most annoying buzzwords of the lazy buzzfeed article writer at once XD
Now you just have to say "It's the dark souls of dark souls"
same basic concept, except i remove the underscores and use camelCase
How? CamelCase is not supported by objetc ids in Home Assistant. The slugify filter changes upper case letters to lower case and replaces everything excpt letters and numbers with an underscore.
that's for my names, especially in z2m where the vast majority of my devices are. in the id it gets all lowercased, yes.
It can do all that, but it still can't tell why kids love the great taste of cinnamon toast crunch...
Or figure out how they cram all that graham into golden grahams...
Or why Americans think 'grahams' has only one syllable ๐
Or why Brits think it has a Y in it. XD
It's our language, we make the rules
I prefer to take a global approach. Like understanding that the Norwegian pronunciation of a G as a hard G would be a Y. And the Old French/Proto-germanic pronuncuation of a J sound would also be a Y.
Which means the proper pronunciation of Gif is "Yiff".
Or why "solder" doesn't have an L in it
This! I was watching a YT vid on soldering once and thought I was going deaf/crazy.
we fix stupid mistakes
I could provide soooooo many counterpoints to that but politics is banned here ๐ซ
We're not thrilled about it either. XD
thats ok, we'll let you continue to say gray'em crackers waaaaay over there out of our sight
Can I set up a HA integration to put in the milk second like it's supposed to be done? XD
I think Americans just need things to be made really simple ๐ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCo0hSFAWOc
They tried 'pavement' but they kept getting hit by cars so they had to specify where they had to walk.

There are some things that will always stand out about certain british comedians...
Johnathan Woss's speech impediment, Jimmy Carr's goose-interfering laugh... XD
a ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaa
Also the fact that if Phil Jupitus ever pulled a Penn Gilette and lost a ton of weight, it'd be like living in the twilight zone.
Also the fact that susan calman makes herself laugh probably more than anyone else I know sheerly out of abject self-embarrassment XD
You can use capital letters and spaces for names. That way you don't have to bother customising them in dashboards.
having systematic naming i can remember saves me more time when searching in device and entity lists than i spend editing card titles in dashboards. ๐
I have no issue searching.
why are no developers online?
you should probably post in the right place and actually include information.
My gf is always nagging I should turn off my rack when I don't use it (for her, not actively working on it = not using it), but now I have another good reason for having it on (besides heating up the basement where I work): rising dough!
I have one of those HPs as my plex server and mine is pretty great. Not that toasty though unless it's encoding
where are we to go for questions/remarks on the community forum? seems after the update, the posts take a lot more space, and especially the New & Unread section is affected by that
They're running a bit hot in idle for me. Probably a culmination of the facts that they need a repaste, sit on top of a hot switch, and on top of each-other.
Probably best to post in the forum, if you leave it as uncategorised for now we can move it later if we need to ๐
ok let me do that. just remembered there even is a thread inside this channel, but tht is only for Discord is it?
That is for discord indeed
Any time ๐
just wait until you forget that dough, and it rises over the rim and oozes down on your servers. if they were not hot before then they will be...
It's a low water dough, I don't think it'll rise a lot.
However, I was thinking of putting my seeds on top of the rack to harnest the heat. Probably not a good idea...
i would then consider another shelf to the side of your existing one for the seeds, and a fan to push the hot air over. and it would still be dangerous. no, nothing that requires handling water near servers.
How powerful do you suppose the fan in an air fryer is? How much power does it draw
Ikea smart plugs say they support "motor 300W", the air fryer as a whole is 1550W, but no way more than 300W of that goes to the fan, right?
a 300W fan would be insane, right?
yeah i imagine it will be fine. also its not so much monitoring thats the issue but if you try and switch the load
The non-monitoring one has the same limitation so I never imagined it was monitoring
and yeah a 300 watt fan in a airfryer would be insane ๐
May I ask quickly here.. I moved to HA in docker environment and realized that I lost the file editor (addon) in companion app. Is there other a way to edit files through the companion app?
I like to imagine an air fryer which a fan so powerful all the heat is just the waste heat of the fan
other than blasting your food into dust is there a reason why this would not work ๐ค
and noise I guess
container install doesnt support addons. you could just edit the files on your host system though i imagine
if you try and switch a high inductive load like a motor with a relay you get alot of arcing and damage things
Yeah that's how far I ended. So no integrations to be used with some separate file editor service, for example?
Will smell be the first tell?
sometimes, or the relay gets fused and cant switch
It's a shame that the metering one is unlikely to be able to use its metering to determine the nature of the load and report on that
if it tracks power factor you could probably work it out
AFAIK it literally just reports an ever-increasing total
but I don't have one yet, just googled about it
you could start a thread in #1284966582375813201 with what you want to do and see if any suggestions
it depends on the plug some have more info than others
Feels weird to have to care about the specifics of the magical sources of endless power in my walls
though I figure it's good for anyone to know a little bit about them
data is great!
Not-so-endless when you check where it's coming from ๐
My whole house ventillation system uses 90W (2 fans and a rotating heat exchanger), you will be fine!
I'm thinking of getting a smart plug for the sole purpose of telling when my air fryer is done cooking (while I am away from it)
Quick question: Is a shorter domain more desirable? Trying to find a good one for me and I have quite some options. The shortest is 7 characters total
i have a similar thing.
personal preference i guess. something easy to remember and easy to read to someone who doesnt understand domains over the phone
https://www.amazon.de/COSORI-Heiรluftfritteuse-APP-Steuerung-LED-Touchscreen-Shake-Modus/dp/B085Y464MR
I have this one but I'm still waiting for it to get added to VeSync in HA
You may have sanitized the link too much, it's 404
I already have the air fryer though, and I wasn't going to pay the extra money for a smart one when a smart plug is like 20 euro
obviously a smart plug will do much less but I'm not really interested in setting the temp remotely
and activating it remotely is probably not possible even with smart stuff because of safety concerns
making stuff semi smart by getting the status from devices by the power they use is cool ๐
I'm having a strangely difficult time finding out the actual power of refrigerators I'm browsing
They seem reluctant to say anything but yearly energy consumption
or things like that
it depends on the temp variance between what they are set at and ambient
But what is it capable of drawing, that's what I want to know
oh like the peak compressor consumption?
It does say 10 amps but surely it's not 2.2 to 2.4 kW?
Yeah
I looked at the info plate on the inside of my fridge but the only wattage on there was 90 which seems unrealistically low
also it was very awkward to read it where it was so I stopped trying after reading the 90 xD
its probably in datasheets somewhere but its hidden because its a number people would misunderstand
people would start saying running a 2kw fridge is like running a 2kw heater constantly. because they dont understand how they work
Can't find these data sheets though
best off monitoring it with something to get a real figure
my garage spikes up to 1500w and the only thing spiking in power out there is a fridge freezer. so thats about 6.5A so i could definetly beleive some could go up to (or at least be rated at) 10A
fixed
Maybe amusingly it's actually the text part you're allowed to remove https://www.amazon.de/dp/B085Y464MR
Firefox sanitised link option can learn from you for sure
They did that?
I mean, they broke the link?
I don't think it's weird that they left the text part, it's a referral sanitizer not a shortener
No I have broken it and the version with the name was by Firefox
ok that's a relief
Also I just bought the domain but the integration in HA doesn't seem to work for it. Would have felt wrong if it would just work I guess xD
They do seem to say you can turn it on remotely, or they say you can schedule up to 4 hours in advance. why only 4 hours? maybe because not fully remote after all
@raw flax You have one of these, right? Can you turn it on fully remotely?
You can even change the temperature remotly. But not via HA because it is still not supported in the VeSync integration sadly
Yes
See I thought that was illegal or something, but I guess not
On/Off
Temperature
Time
Apparently not but I also thought so ๐คท
Not asking for help. Just saying that a 3 line config is something that I'm able to mess up apparently
it happens to all of us, if you cant get it working then support would be the place to go though ๐
Turned out fine
And I'm in Germany so that's extra wild
for some devices theres a ccertain aspect of... do i really want it to be able to be turned on remotely
Yeah
"Hey Google, add 1h to my air fryer"
"hey Google, turn the air fryer to 205ยฐC"
Words of power in the 20th century
Some people store things in their ovens... don't do that
(unless they are oven racks)
Comes scarily close to Smart Home bomb
Home automation enthusiast when they discover smart bombs don't support Matter ๐
I wonder, is there anything like... a smart button actuator
it feels like a forbidden technology
Like I am picturing a little device you attach to the surface around a button
a finger bot is what you are looking for
Mixed feelings on the name lol
switchbot do one without the name ๐ https://uk.switch-bot.com/products/switchbot-bot
imagine spending like 300 euro on a gimmicky set-up with 'fingerbots' and cameras to make a 100 euro air fryer smart
i think they are more designed for switched in awkward or hard to reach places.
people use them for turning heat on before getting home too
specially in places where they cant do heavy modifications e.g. renting
I figured light switches when they don't wanna replace the actual switch
my issue with using it on a light switch is that if you are going to use the lightswitch "normally" too. it becomes awkward. specially if feeling in the dark etc...
oh, I thought they would account for that by moving out of the way after actuating
More bookmarked black magic
some are better then others but its still stuck on your switch
I liked when in Mr. Robot they hacked into a smart home
I liked the way they combined the realistic idea of vulnerability, with the realistically very limited actual harm done
They just made the house uncomfy so the (rich) owners would leave (to some other house they own I guess) and they could squat it
I don't really remember what was the point of that but you know. nobody hacking a coffee machine to make it explode to assassinate someone
and actual tinkerers aren't even usually at risk of the uncomfy cause we'd just shut it down
there are lots of theoretical bad outcomes but very little of it can ever be done on purpose
some idiot is doing something stupid with the appliance so we all gotta walk at the pace of the slowest in society
My modern Bosch upright uses 250W per day and freezer about 500W per day
I want the usage when it's pumping, not the average usage over time
average? or do you mean wh instead of w?
but W is measurement of power not energy consumption
How many raccoons does that equate to
Yeah W/day would be something like power acceleration or something
it depends on your latitude
My solar farm is growing by 300W/day
watt day is a horrible idea for measuring energy
1 panel a day keeps the oil companies away?
What I mean is, over the course of last year, my solar farm has grown by an average of 300 W average production per day
I kinda see the appeal in kWh/year in the sense that it conveys you're talking about sustained and not peak or anything
but at the same time, it doesn't really say that you're doing that, people will just assume, which also seems like a bad thing
kWh / year is just yearly yield
same for wattage and assuming it means peak
well yeah the main reason is that kWh, days and years are easier to reason about
1Wh = 3600 Ws = 3600 Joule. so 1kWh = 3.6MJ
those are the units for energy
for making quotes we used TMY data to produce those numbers, thats pretty common
although, I do feel like at the very least, our power bill could be per GW or something
er. GJ
or MJ
I just think there is a risk in a unit coming to mean something that it doesn't formally mean
yes. and W/h is definitely not energy even if people often mean Wh when writing it
Relevant xkcd https://xkcd.com/3038/
Lol I accidentally found the explainxkcd first, while looking for this
and they point out that "miles per gallon" has uncancelled units xD can you imagine?
1 mile per gallon is technically 425144 m^-2
over here we also turn that upside down. we measure gas guzzlers in l/metric mile (10km) or l/100km depending on country. so for us lowerer is betterer
so to think about this, you'd have to consider that for a box-shaped gas tank, every square meter of footprint lets you travel 1000000 times the height of the gas tank?
This is specifically for 1 km/litre, I am not a car person and I don't know if that is outrageously high or low
So what is that in barleycorns?
nothing wrong with that
10km/l is more realistic
for guzzlers
Oh so you've met my ex then? XD
Also to whoever it was who was talking about the amazon vine thing... literally 99% of the entertainment is the "Wait you're offering me THAT!?" you get every day.
For instance, on my stack today.... a coupler bracket for an excavator.
Why that needs to be Reviewed, I don't know,, but also why in the hell would I need one of those!?
seems like something you would want to know if it has bad reviews ๐
I mean, yeah, but it feels like the kind of thing where if it was that bad, there'd be lawsuits involved XD
do you research open court cases, or reviews before you buy?
I have really bad ADHD, so that research starts and ends with "Oh hey what's that" XD
Do the maths youself then, if you don't like my units
And someone will ask if that is a constant load, and because it cycles it won't be
for a fridge, it is completely insignificant how much power it uses whilst in use, as it uses so little in total. it would be like working out the instantanious usage of a PWM fan which might be microwatts but over a day may be say 36W
If it was a giant 3 phase motor you were running from an inverter it may have some significance
I guess I will just shitpost instead of trying to be serious
i felt it was ambigious
"500w a day" to me means 500w constantly for a day so therefore 12kwh a day which seems high
discussing energy and power often gets confusing.
You always run into resistance.
if you use an average of 300W the whole day then that becomes 300W * 24h = 7.2kWh
Yea no fridges use a ton of energy
It's probably the single largest consumer in regular households besides hvac
nah, modern fridges consume very little energy. If yours uses a lot then it's probably worth it to replace it
Modern fridges have decent sealing... sort of.
You should measure it, they don't
Unless you have an expensive fridge. French door fridges SUCK for energy consumption.
Your looking ~300kwh a year
Also if you want to save even More money, get a chest freezer. The top loaders. They're Very good at keeping things cheap.
100kWh - 200kWh per year here
That may be what their tags state but with how those duty cycles are being measured that's not gonna happen in my experience
i think i am at 100-200 here too. i guess it depends on the differential between inside and ambiant. i can see 300kwh in a hot climate
Or it's just small that can also be the case
Having an AC helps keep your fridge's bill down a bit too.
You're displacing a bit, sure, but it does help.
Having an ac just offloads the cooling
Granted, you're making your water heater work a little harder if it's in a conditioned space, but separate issue.
a heat pump in my climate will do 3000-5000 kWh / year. Resistive heating would do 10.000 kWh/year +. An electric car does somewhere around 2400 kWh/year depending on how much you drive ofcourse
An EV gives you the side benefit of a battery(get a generac cutoff) you can power your home with in an emergency though. Also you save money by not spending that much more on gas.
Beginner here - please be gentle!
that tech doesn't really exist yet, but it would be cool to have
It... very very much does though?
there are some larger scale V2G experiments running but that's it
A cutoff plate for a generator hookup for a breaker box is very cheap...
And if your car can backfeed(surprisingly a lot can, check your manual), plug car into generator port, use mains cutoff switch plate to make sure the generator port is closed and the mains is open, and boom.
only a few EV models have it. And in general you can't use it for emergency power
A question. is there any version of HA that would vrun on an Arduino UNo (that I have) rather than a RP? (which I dont have!)
no
Basically any EV that does bidirectional charging can support it.
Oh. Better start saving the pennies then!
in some rural areas of the world electric bikes have become popular because of employers offering free charging. people then pedal the bike home without assist and rig the battery to power household items, tablets for childrens school homework etc
(Specificallyt V2H, but yeah)
Also the supported list is surprisingly long. Basically everything Hyundai makes since last year(I've seen some people who've found ways to get earlier models to do it, but separate issue), the Leaf, the Lightning, the Fisker Ocean(which is surprising that that exists), the cyber(vomit noises), that weird thing VW put out, that stupid one Jeep made...
How much energy can those possibly store for people to even bother
What is the oldest version of Windows that will run HA? I have a Win7 Netbook! (but also a Win11 desktop)
Windows doesn't run homeassistant at all
Windows doesn't technically run HA. So any version of windows that can run VMWare.
this channel is not for support, make a thread in#1284966540617449515
Believe me, I've been wanting them to make a windows native version of HA for a long time. ๐
Yuck
windows ๐คข
when you never know if the power grid will be up then it's better than nothing, evidently
Seriously, just... startup time alone makes it a better option XD
Sounds like a terrible place to live in tbh
They do give instructions for installig HA on WIN, but only mention 10 and 11
My winserver starts up basically instantly. Meanwhile, the VM for HA is.... noticeably slow. Hell, the non-VM linux box I made for an emustation a few years back was in the "Go get a cup of coffee" territory.
Skill Deez Nuts.
Also back to the car thing, that's one of the reasons I chuckle a little when people talk about the grid not being enough to support EVs... Not only Can the grid handle it, but it's actually better if more evs with more V2H capability get put out there. Hell, could even be used with a comms protocol that could tell the house "Switch to stored power, whether it's the EV or house batteries, because the grid's overloaded, so help take some load off"
Would be a hell of an alternative to rolling brownouts, that's for sure
They are in the process of figuring out fast charging on low capacity grids which is quite the right choice
I mean...
Fast charging should be the last thing people focus on. Most people shouldn't be fast charging.
the grid can't handle it if everyone starts charging at the same time ๐
Chances are if you can afford a modern EV, you're not living in an apartment with no garages.
You don't need mwh connections for one car coming by every now and then so it may just buffer energy in between
So you don't need to buy as expensive infrastructure (today)
The biggest PITA with EVs isn't the grid, it's the drivers.
So many folks are like "Yea, I TOTALLY need to charge at a charging station", nevermind the fact that they have L2 in their garage.
I don't really get that as an argument if your car isn't in your garage for prolonged periods of time
I live in a very weird neighborhood, low-ish income apartments where I am, upper middle class suburban cookie cutter houses a block away. Three car garages, all new cars, etc.
Local horse forgets that sometimes, people sleep at night.
Not for as long as you may need to charge a car with the infrastructure available to you
But yeah, lotta EVs in that neighborhood. Where do they all charge? At the Target down the damn road ๐
Yes, for that long or less.
https://github.com/evcc-io/evcc if you have an EV you may like this
it has a beautiful UI
and it has a home assistant addon
the UK has a unique power problem. after big live tv programs there is a huge surge as everyone puts on the electric kettle to make tea
we have to have a hydro system ready for it. it pumps water up in the background and when the kettles go on its put through a turbine
Of course you can bribe someone to install you your personal 25kw plug but why bother
Overnight is usually more than plenty to get most EVs up to 80% SoC and most commuters won't even need to do it every night.
stole this picture from our dutch HA server
...So literally every pumped storage hydroelectric system. XD
my german friend calls it drunk german
I can see why
Yes yes that's true
There's a great video on YT where some guy is going into how stupid that "Store power by stacking concrete blocks" nonsense thing was and it basically just ends with him reinventing that system XD
Same guy did a whole video about how tesla's hyperloop tunnel nonsense was dumb, talks about all the ways to fix it, and by the end he's just reinvented the subway.
