I've been accustomed to 16 \ 32TB SSDs for close to a decade now

I'm broken in terms of realism

clear ferry
#

I finally got the link up between my 100 and 800 G switches, and then I saw I needed to update them

#

now the link is down

#

so I've sent a mail to nvidia asking wtf

desert cave
#

ooops

clear ferry
#

"this worked on cumulus 5.6 but after upgrading to 5.11 it does not work"

#

"please show us a switch where it works"

#

"the switch... is already upgraded?"

#

grrrrr

desert cave
#

we got a good test of the new toronto DC a few days ago, too. New customer there dumped 22PB at us @ 350Gbit :D It's always nice to have new hardware not fall over for once

clear ferry
#

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

#

I work on a 10x10Gbit connection across the atlantic ocean, fun to troubleshoot performance and tune for the data transfer

ocean oar
#

22PB is a good effort

clear ferry
#

It's a cute splunk datastore

desert cave
#

it's enough of a test to get past caching :D

clear ferry
#

I rolled out a splunk datastore with 60PB a few years ago, that was fun heh

desert cave
#

a few years back we were interviewing an external security consultant, and they wanted us to "port mirror all our traffic to them" so they could monitor it. They also wanted copies of all our system logs. It was pretty apparent they were used to dealing with corporate servers, not a cloud provider. Like, you want a copy of all our traffic? Okay, we're averaging north of 1Tbps currently. You want all our logs? Okay, we generate 6TB of them a day

clear ferry
#

LOL

desert cave
#

they also asked how we'd handle it if we got DDoSed. My boss's answer was great "Well first, I'd be impressed, then I'd try to hire them."

ocean oar
#

A terabit of anything is a hell of an effort in any circumstances. We've managed it very briefly from compute to storage in our datacentre, and it's one of those situations where it really feels like the wheels are about to fall off.

#

Have had a few storage upgrades since then and I think we'd survive closer to 1.5Tbps but the steady-state throughput of 500-600Gbps is much more pleasant for all

desert cave
#

yeah.. that 1Tbps is across 6 datacenters around the world, so it's definitely not through a single pipe, haha

ocean oar
#

Ours is just from one end of the datacentre to the other πŸ˜›

#

One site, single tenant, just a bunch of our stuff

desert cave
#

nice!

stuck anchor
#

working on the bleeding edge of technology is something quite different from what most people think of πŸ˜„ like @clear ferry hints at - there are lots of bugs and tweaks when you push the envelope of tech that is way out there for most people. because when you start pushing the boundaries of even that tech you start discovering all those little(?) things that no lab testing brought out. like when we were running multi-PB file systems back in the nineties. Or when pushing the limits of 100 and 800Gb links today, and seeing how weird bits of aggregation, link balancing etc fall over.

#

we have just discovered that we have a problem with the default cooling setting on our HP servers... the SFPs are in the hot zone in the data center, and when the fans in a server are allowed to ease down because the server isn't under much load the sfp's get hit by the hot air from the rack across the aisle, leading to overheating and failure. πŸ˜• so we have to crank up that default.

desert cave
#

hah! amazing

ocean oar
#

Had one of those recently too, but it was the server fans overpowering the fans in the in-row coolers and flooding the cold side of the rack with hot air blown through from the hot side.
This caused the servers' inlet temperature to be too hot, which made them keep their fan speed at 100%

desert cave
#

was the airflow backwards?

ocean oar
#

Nope, just ~2.45mΒ³/s of server fans pushing one way and ~2.2mΒ³/s of the cooler's fans pushing the other

#

Pressurised the hot side

#

The great news is with their cooling set to the "efficiency" option instead of "performance", wind up using ~6% less power (~29kW/rack vs ~31kW) but achieve exactly the same performance

clear ferry
#

these days cooling fins have really evolved

#

like the 800G SFPs are 90% cooling fins and 10% electronics

#

I installed a 800G SM the other day, think the guy said it was 35w power draw

desert cave
#

laptop CPU there

clear ferry
#

low powered one yes

#

now add 64 of those to each switch

primal laurel
last cedar
clear ferry
#

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

clear ferry
#

Heck, a single 4U node these days pulls 12-14kW easily

primal laurel
#

but if you compare a 10G switch today to one from a couple of years ago the power draw should be less

loud pike
#

Meanwhile me over here with my little 500w PSU running my little 4u frankenbox that Probably isn't happy with me for running 16 bays and will probably explode if i populate all of them...

#

Also my little 1u gigabit switch that I got for free that for some reason has no SFP socks...

#

...and 3 ports populated out of 24.

#

One of them being the uplink. XD

#

(Yes, I do have an SFP capable switch, but it's a DIN rail mount and I have neither the power infrastructure nor the rail for that.)

primal laurel
#

like a while back I read an article about AMS-IX where they replaced all the network switches purely because the new models had such lower power consumption that they could downgrade their electrical connection, and they would recover their investment within a few years

clear ferry
clear ferry
#

All 40g since 2011, all 100g since 2018, end ports all 25g since 2018 perhaps

loud pike
#

Though sometimes the efficiency comes in other forms. Like, the fans that came with my server case? Loud as HELL. Loud fans equal Inefficient fans.

clear ferry
#

And heck, it is all 800g going forward now for all the AI installs

primal laurel
loud pike
#

And since thoe fans were running off of standard mobo 4pin hookups, they were not providing any additional power/air pressure over a quieter SP fan.

clear ferry
loud pike
primal laurel
#

dont know what that means

ocean oar
primal laurel
loud pike
#

< is being a bit of a dweeb.

#

And yes. Loud fans = Lower efficiency. Noise means your bearings aren't as good and/or your fan is fighting its own turbulence. In either case, the motor works harder and consumes more power to produce the same air movement. Get quieter fans.

clear ferry
#

Don't worry @loud pike Stefan has no sense of humor

primal laurel
loud pike
#

Oh, you guys will probably find this worthy of a chuckle.

#

Thrift shop near me the other week had a stack of AC Ubiquiti APs.

#

They smelled a bit like something had gone very wrong wherever they were last used, and I'm not downgrading from AX(also that level of power is MASSIVE overkill for my little apartment) but it's amusing they were there.

ocean oar
#

They're probably still quite usable - or at least the Qualcomm-based ones are, the Mediatek models were always turds - if AC is all you needed

clear ferry
#

Yuck, ubiquiti

stuck anchor

posts are basically threads

Weather Update: The snow is light and fluffy, but nature snuck in a little bit of ice, making the leafblower method not very effective in snow removal

I remember when that doofus tried to use water to cool a room full of PCs on a single loop.... and completely failed to understand that the only way using a coolant loop works is if it can compress and expand that liquid.

grizzled gull
#

liquids can't be compressed...

loud pike
#

Water can't be compressed. Plenty of other liquids can.

#

The stuff that your AC uses to cool your room works on that exact principle. It's also the same stuff in canned air.

grizzled gull
#

AC is a gas at normal atmospheric temps

loud pike
#

Kind of not the point. The point is that it should only be a gas in a very specific part of the machine.

grizzled gull
#

to be fair water can be compressed as a gas πŸ˜›

#

I know what you're saying,

#

2 different types of cooling though evaproative vs conductive

loud pike
#

And yeah, the world of refrigerants is fun. Like how smaller stuff like small fridges and window unit ACs can explode in a fireball because the refrigerant they use is literally propane. XD

grizzled gull
#

When I was 18 in college I worked at a turkey processing place, they had an ammonia leak, my god that stuff is horrible

#

I thought ammonia cleaner was bad, it doesn't even compare

loud pike
#

Meanwhile, TFE refrigerants(which are dope by the way) are so ridiculously stable that you can use them to clean dust off of electronics because they don't conduct and can't catch fire, and they're so gentle that they use them as a propellant in asthma inhalers. XD

#

Oh lord, I do not miss ammonia refrigerants. Some portable ACs still use that and it's nasty stuff.

#

Had a small home-depot portable AC up until recently, it sprung a leak a few years ago and I thought the cat'd done a mischief.

grizzled gull
#

lol

loud pike
#

(If anyone wants to spend WAY too much time learning about refrigerants and cooling and all that other stuff, there's a channel on youtube called Technology Connections which I feel like would absolutely be the speed of the average user here. Seriously, if he's NOT running HA, I will be shocked.)

grizzled gull
#

oh that guy is addictive..... the dishwasher episodes are great

simple gazelle
#

Fun fact, the ISS's thermal management system is ammonia-based. And yeah if Alec isn't using HA he should πŸ˜„

primal laurel
#

propane has much lower GHG potential than refrigerants such as R32

loud pike
#

Basically it's just an air conditioner.... in a tube... with a speaker.

static schooner
#

does it repeat "be cool, man" over and over?

#

"chill out"

loud pike
#

I'm massively oversimplifying, but yeah, standing wave transducer in a closed chamber, compresses all the hot on one end, makes the trough of the wave very cold, place an evaporator and a compressor for two different loops in specific places in there and Boom, you've got supercooling.

primal laurel
#

they have low vibration requirements. So they sacrifice efficiency instead

young sigil
loud pike
#

I haven't, but that sounds like basically the same idea.

#

And Japan uses the method to make a supercooling loop that lets a train run at roughly 500 kliks and hour cruising speed, so it seems to work XD

#

(Meanwhile, China's like "WE HAVE ONE TOO, WE'RE BETTER", and every picture they've shown is for the wrong type of maglev(active control), and has never actually been shown moving. And most of the clips they HAVE shown have been ai generated. XD )

#

ah and multi stream works fine aswell

#

did nbot mention that

#

it's just single stream connection

when I use iperf with anything >= -R 3 all is fine with 280 mb/s

what's the other end of the iperf?

#

here is also a realtek 2.5G card

odd hill
#

i would definitely not rely on wsl under windows for reliable results.

gloomy canyon
#

yeah thats why I test from the NUC

#

but NUC to WSL gives full bandwith

odd hill
#

so...are you using the truenas for VM storage?

gloomy canyon
#

nah it's just for cold storage

#

the VMs run on a second nuc right now

odd hill
#

oooooh

#

nm. for a second i thought it might be a layer 2 vs layer 3 thing with it having to work its way up to the...are they on the same VLAN?

gloomy canyon
#

yeah, I have no vlans set so far

odd hill
#

😐

#

y u do this

#

vlan your shit, bro.

gloomy canyon
#

before the new ubiquiti switches my whole home network was running with gbit unmanaged 8 port switches

odd hill
#

default, clients, servers, guest.

#

do you have a security appliance of some sort?

#

sitting above the flex?

#

or is that the only piece of ubiquiti gear you got so far?

gloomy canyon
#

nah bought last week 2 switches and 1 ap

odd hill
#

...but no security gateway or dream machine?

gloomy canyon
#

nope I can't switch my cable modem sadly

odd hill
#

...says who

#

security gateway/dream machine sits behind modem. don't need to replace it. and if it's a modem/router combo, just put that shit in bridge mode.

gloomy canyon
#

yeah that sounds like a plan, read a lot about pfsense etc.

odd hill
#

you're getting like...a fraction of Ubiquiti's utility.

#

you have like a leg and an arm, and no brain.

gloomy canyon
#

yeah but the upgrade from 1 old nano hd ap to 2 aps and some switches is big progress πŸ˜‰

odd hill
#

i mean sure. but that's like saying you got a chassis, and four wheels, but no engine.

gloomy canyon
#

all true, got your point, but starting a new journey when I can't fix the switching problem sounds not that good

odd hill
#

yeah. but. your gear isn't optimized and working in sync with a control node.

#

you're basically yoloing a blind setup without any of the gear working together.

gloomy canyon
#

see what? I did a million iperf runs πŸ˜‰

odd hill
#

so trying to fix this issue without being able to see how your gear is configured on a more advanced level is kinda pointless at the moment.

gloomy canyon
#

yeah got you, maybe I have to invest

odd hill
#

it's $129.

#

that's like a couple lap dances and a beer.

gloomy canyon
#

yeah right now I run the unifi controller as docker container

oh. so you have a controller.

#

is that the switch you got?

#

yep

gloomy canyon
odd hill

shoot me your switch config so i can take a peek.

erm, just need to figure out how to download the config

just screenshot it in controller.

#

small form factor PC isn't a bad idea, though, hmm

clever mortar
#

Performs better. More stable. More reliable. Doesn't have to draw much more power.

stuck anchor
#

i personally like to run my ha on a pi 4 4GB. it boots from usb attached sata ssd to avoid any file system bottleneck, and compared to sd card it is nigth and day. it has been rock solid for years.

it is totally quiet, so i can have it in my living room attached directly into the fiber router. also on the same power circuit. so if the router is up the ha instance should be up as well. no dependencies on my other network gear. with the nabu casa cloud connection i don't rely on any nat setup in my router for access in, and with grafana and ssh add-ons i can use it as an emergency gateway in to fix other stuff, and i can monitor that other stuff and alert me on the companion app. for me there are valid reasons to run haos completely standalone. and the pi definitely doesn't have any performance issues for me since i got it off the sd card

dawn badge
#

i think the main arguement for mini pc now is that. once you buy a pi/case/ssd you are already basically at cost equivilent of a mini pc that has better performence

stuck anchor
#

yes. i am not saying a pi is better than a mini pc today. but that there are good reasons to not build a mini pc that is equipped to run proxmox and loads of other stuff. consider running your ha standalone. there are valid reasons.

dawn badge
#

yeah, a rpi is fine but if your buying hardware today its maybe not worth it

stuck anchor
#

also, a very experienced linux admin i know migrated from other ways of running ha to haos bare metal on a nuc because matter connectivity was a nightmare otherwise.

#

i agree that a nuc could be better bang for your buck today. just go cheap. 4GB RAM is minimum, but since a NUC style PC probably can pull more add-ons i would get more ram on a pc than on the pi. just don't over-spec it, and keep haos on bare metal. also get something that can run really quiet, aka very power efficient

primal laurel
#

we having this discussion again lol?

dawn badge
#

i think its over for now πŸ˜›

primal laurel
#

a mini pc is better bang for your buck. A pi is way more versatile. That's really all there is to it

solar zealot
#

instead of supporting evil minipc corp your support evil raspi corp

stuck anchor
#

and if you want to run on a pi, be kind to yourself and make sure it has enough ram and that you boot it from a memory stick or ssd. do not run haos from sd-card. you will regret.

stuck anchor
#

i think that is really all there is to all the people having trouble on a pi. either reading the minimum supported spec for ram and thinking that is enough, or running from sd card. a2 class sd cards are better, yes, but better does not mean good. they are still lousy for running your os and worse for running a database. and as soon as a pi runs out of ram and starts paging from sd card - game over. there are lots of pi's out there that can do a wonderful job. do not discourage people from using them. don't tell them they should migrate to a pc if all they need is to migrate their os to a memory stick to boost it

#

but buying new? yeah. buy a nuc pc

primal laurel
stuck anchor
#

yes. 4GB is plenty. I rarely see more than 50% usage on mine, and i do have a few add-ons. back when i ran node-red it was really suffering, even if the ram usage was not a problem. that was when i went from sd card to memory stick, and the performance gain was incredible

Another 30 bucks would give you a u7 pro with 6ghz for wifi 6e and 7
They are mostly stable now on 8.0.x
For the cameras id personally not buy them, they aren't that good for the $ you spend on em but if the ecosystem is for you then that's alright

Switching from h.264 to h.265 on my UniFi cameras made a dent in the storage use. More so on the 4k camera than the 1080p/2.5k though

(I joke, but I'm picky about sushi. I live in America, where like 90% of sushi is.... not good. They forget that the word actually means something.)

If you're making your sushi with plain rice, you're doin it wrong.

fair ermine
#

There's an old security box in a hall closet with lines going all over the house, I'm using that to house the switch and run the cables to the cameras. This obviously has a few bonuses.

I've done the in-house server rack. I'm not about that life anymore. I could maybe do a wall hanger with a few Us in it, which was the original plan with the UDMSE, but I a. Can't be bothered with it these days, and b. There's no one good central place to put it in the new place accept an un-air conditioned garage which is terrible for a rack.

loud pike
#

In other news, I was offered to review an outdoor wifi AP.... the brand seems entirely generic, the supposed range is 500m(no I do not need that), and it has an SFP terminal sock, which.... I mean, sure.... I turned them down because I have literally no use for this ridiculousness.

#

(Also the company astroturfs like nobody's business and I have no desire to contribute to that in any way)

#

Also I live in a 1200 sq ft apartment. I have literally no purpose for that much range. XD

#

Hell, my deco kit came with three routers.

I use one.

ocean oar
loud pike
#

Yeah, considering how poorly reviewed the company's other gear is, I'm definitely calling BS.

ocean oar
#

Even PTP at that distance is stretching things

#

But no matter how much antenna gain you apply, there are too many issues with devices being that far away from the AP

loud pike

hehe stretching. Aaaand we're back to the t'ain't. XD

I mean, what? XD

Exactly. The weather doesn't get as bad here but you still see all the RWD cars struggle with the tiniest bit of ice. If you live somewhere with regular, deep snow, you go AWD and keep a set of chains.

#

Although it is funny watching the BMW drivers fail

clever mortar

Winter tyres (or at least all-seasons) also make a hell of a difference

forest edge

not many american's bother with swapping out tires

clever mortar

Not many brits do either, sadly

forest edge
#

we just buy all terrain and call it a day

clever mortar
#

Most drive around with summer tyres and wonder why grip in the winter is bad

deft pewter
#

I've never switched tyres. But unlike most drivers, I know to drive in a lower gear for less torque when traction sucks πŸ˜„

#

Even now that we have an EV, it has a low-power launch thing to pull away on ice.

clever mortar
#

I fit all seasons, it's just easier given that we're out in all weathers

forest edge
#

ev's are much heavier. imagine that alone would help

running theme here that tire companies love EV's lol

loud pike
#

I did see an immortality treatment on mice.

In a television show.

Mice, as it turns out, are not human beings.

loud pike
#

As for EVs weighing more, they do weigh a little more, but here's the thing. You put significantly less wear on your brakes by using regen braking more(letting the motor do the braking), you never have to pay for an oil change, and like 100 other maintenance faults that don't need to be done make up the cost as well.

#

Even the battery being "OMG YOU HAVE TO REPLACE IT EVERY X YEARS" is largely nonsense. Unless you buy a tesla, those are notoriously crap.

forest edge
#

but when something does break you are sol

loud pike
#

Most other EV makers use separated cells for the batteries, so if a single cell breaks down, the battery can be serviced with a replacement cell rather than a replacement full battery.

#

And yeah, if a Tesla breaks, you're DEFINITELY SOL because their service centers are arse and never have parts. Most others? Not really an issue.

#

For reference, this is a battery with the shell off from an Ioniq 5.

#

Every one of those black blocks can be disconnected and swapped. So if one of those cell blocks fails? Swap it individually, problem solved.

#

For comparison... this is a Tesla.

forest edge
#

good luck finding a mobile mechanic for that

loud pike
#

All those huge cell groups? Are fused together.

#

In some of them they're fused in place as well.

#

The only thing a mechanic needs to drop a battery in an EV is a cart, a lift, and an electric driver.

#

Lift car, cart under car, drop car until it rests on the cart, disconnect the mains plug and the cooling loop, unscrew, lift car off battery, donezo.

forest edge
#

EV's are kind of losing traction here

loud pike
#

Seriously, getting an EV battery out is stupidly easy compared to, say, getting an engine out. XD

forest edge
#

the news stories of them stuck in parking lots during cold weather did not help lol
