I'm feeling so old, my favorite time for music is like 30 years ago now lol It seems like the 90's were yesterday
Can anyone help me with poe? Not sure if the plug is wired wrong, but loads of smoke just came out
Yea, you need 8 pins, not 5 on the plug
POE has enough amp/voltage to let the magic smoke out?
This is the old 100Mb/s at best
Yes
but its low amperage though
Not with that big red boi on the end though ๐
Ehhh, that's only marginally more power
The fire people took out one of the main switchboard fuses (programmable 3200A fuses) with a ground fault, not quite sure how but absolutely hilarious
Bus bar is rated to 3200A
i guess usually programmed down to something safer
Won't fit a little emporia vue clamp meter around it ๐
If it's up to 3.2k, the saver value is still char coal ๐ฆ
Who would have thought the international billing support couldn't handle this shit.
sooo ummm listening to Toby Keith.....

Could be worth seeing!
I know!
You think he'll make it to the show?
Weekend at Bernieโs style
He shoulda learned to rope and ride.
I think he died of stomach cancer? Snuff?
That can't have been fun, poor soul
I also realized the other day I'm 2/3 my way through my work career.... 30 years down, 15 years left, I can see it(60) lol
Can you tell I had a boring drive
The thing I had ordered last october which was the first of two things that usps initially lost actually showed up last week lmao. box was a little crushed but it made it
I'm retiring at 60, my house will be paid for, kids will be gone(or paying rent) and I will have 30 years of pension
Most will probably be jealous of that
20 years of which will go to waste when you die at 70 ๐ซ
I'm going to try being born rich in a few years, I'll let you know if it works out
May you outlive your pension - Confucius (probably)
30 years of pension means I have 30 years in the pension, its not how much I have afterwards
people who continue to work after retirement generally live longer. they did studies on that
Ah. 30 years saved?
work = continue to learn and use their brains
The longer you are in a pension job, the higher your monthly payments are
But is it the working or the staying active? I'd be willing to bet it's the latter. You don't have to continue to be someone's employee to live well.
So if I do 30 years I'll get like 65% of my pretax income for the rest of my life I think
it's definitely the latter
Keeping your mind sharp, your body fit, and your social skills intact all work wonders for longevity.
I think it's a combo of it all. most people don't regret working lol
i just got this reply from a customer:
A delivery has never felt so good ```
a lot of cops get to pension age in one department, then they go to another and get to the minimum pension age there and collect 2x.
Also my wife gets 100% of my retirement if I die
so usps... gud?
I wonder what your circle is like .Most people really fucking don't like working.
I think this is a generational thing
eh, I like working. I just wish I could work way less.
If it makes you feel better my 4 tree's got in on time and in 1 piece(well 4)
I will always being doing something, I just don't want to be forced to do something
I'd rather tinker on something and learn new stuff
And yes generational, Really young Gen-X here
well if you pay attention to many retires you'll notice they maintain the same sleep schedule, they usually still try and leave the house around the same time.. the whole routine but with diffrent destinations
those are the ones you generally see the most active
<<-- Xennial
My dad died at the Casino, playing slots after driving his Harley there
those cows can be dangerous
Had a CVA which caused a MI, never felt it coming, went out doing what he loved
Some of the best riders I ever met were motorcylce cops, heavy bikes, complete control
well this got grim quick
Abolishing ohsa will speed this up ๐
And whilst on this grim subject, I will probably go to a rabid raccoon that I try and hug ๐
you would confuse foaming at the mouth with just after eating marshmallows
Very easy to do
sweet finished aiming all nginx at internal names. Reckon it should be faster ๐
Hello all! Anyone know if there's a HA plugin / whatever for Blue Iris? I have a Blue Iris machine, and I don't really want to have 2 streams connecting to my camera, plus, some of the cameras are chinese-based, BI connects to them fine (because it's awesome) but I worry about HA attaching to them. It's not really necessary, but I was just wondering if such a thing existed.
#1284966353798697001 with the "Cameras" tag might be able to help

Whatโs a good use for a raspberry pi 4 model b after migrating HA off of it?
Lots of uses. "Good" is a subjective term
octopi
golf ball.. lowsy at being a ball, but still rather satisfying
It's the best part of HA
That weather card I was working on would have made a terrible card so JLo walked me through using the Actions in DevTools to get the data I need to create a template in DevTools and then helped me write the YAML configuration.
Now I have a binary sensor that will tell me if the precipitation probability goes over 50% over the course of the next 6 hours.
now we just need to wean you off the potty chair and you'll be good to go!
Howdy folks, ordering a few bits to get going. Quick question, is PoE only available in Home Assistant Yellow or will it work on Green too?
Only the PoE version of the Yellow has it.
The standard Yellow and the Green have no PoE included.
I more mean, if I order a seperate PoE adapter would it work on the Green?
If it delivers 12V, enough power and has the proper barrel plug, yes.
Awesome! Thanks! Green it is
that's literally my job
i have a friend who has survived quite a few crashes on motorcycle. but always on racetracks and full protection gear. still quite a few damaged joints and such that start reminding him of his youth now that he is in the late fifties.
what doeasn't kill you will come back to haunt you when you get old
i'm 60 now and have no desire to stop working. i like my job. retirement would be doing the same stuff but with less money.
There's always the option to do the same things, but call yourself a "consultant" and charge many, many hundreds of dollars per hour for your expertise
Seems to be a common semi-retirement option
Thatโs super useful. Lots of good data is hidden in weather entitiesโe.g.: https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1328101753719226488
Anyone here using Aqara P1 sensors with ZHA?
Ugh, maybe it's time to switch to zwave
Likely many do.
they would be in #1284966617670881350 -> Zigbee
Are there not channels for this kind of thing? I'm not really a fan of the topic based stuff on discord
I'll head to reddit I think, I prefer discord for freeform discussion
๐
post and you get your own "free form" dicussion
but whatever
posting a topic in reddit is exactly the same ๐
definitely go where you're most comfortable
So... I am new to HA.
I have a lot of stuff set up, and a couple very basic automations.
Right now everything is dumped in the Overview.
I would like to build some dashboards, like a layout of the house with rooms with basic info (temp, if lights are on, minisplit is heating/cooling, occupied). Then one for each room with more detailed info.
I would like a reusable weather widget that changes background based on the temp.
Where should I start for tutorials on how to build stuff?
There's also the forums ๐
I looked in there, a lot of specific questions. I'm looking for basic tutorials so I can try stuff before I start asking the stupid questions ๐
Then the forums
there's a whole forum of community guides
You might find some examples in #1284960456880029707, too.

It doesn't make a bit of difference, guys.

Aside from one having a uniboot plug and the other having two separate fibres (which means if you need to swap the pair for some reason), and one being 3mm and the other 5mm, pretty similar
Are you planning to actually bury it, or put it in conduit?
Because if you're burying it buy the thicker one, and if you're running conduit buy the thinner one
im wanting the flypro cable, and yes i plan to direct bury it
i ordered the rambo cable because everyone i talked to said it and a pair of converters i got would work for what im needing
but amazon promptly lost that cable for 2 weeks
refunded it and im looking for similar so i dont have to return the converters
if you're going to buy fiber cables i'd suggest going to an actual vendor site instead of amazon
and also.. direct burial? how deep are you gonna go?
Because you are gonna want that shit deep; because suffering awaits if it ever is severed ๐
otherwise.. throw that shit in a conduit unless you're doing like.. 1+ ft deep..

@clear ferry Can I commision your new basement UPS yet?

So I been thinking about installing an inhouse termostat is there a way to make it wireless so it basically sends the temp signal wirelessly to a module I then install into my heating system?
Just get a wireless thermostat
Hive are great. You don't even need to use their hub - just connect it up to your existing Zigbee network. But... you want to be over in #1284966353798697001 for recommendations, not in here where there's no support.
aqara sensors are great
Yeah nah its further down the line now im just looking at options and sucess stories
Aqara Radiator Thermostat E1 for the heating elements yeah but I was thinking to controll my whole heating system.
Those 'options and success stories' are over in #1284966353798697001
In my opinion those kinda systems can operate fully by themselves without any additional sensors that they don't already have
and electric floor heating in the basement
Weird way to describe an entire datacenter region
you jest, but I installed a HPC environment 18 years ago that did water cooled racks, and the water heat was used to keep the sidewalks free of snow in winter
Yeah its hooked onto outside temperature which is great when I got shit windows but im swapping them out tommorow and a week forward.
After that inside temperature makes more sense
This tends to already be covered by return temp sensors
Besides them being a bit battery munchy that sounds a lot more sensible than trying to get another % out of optimizing the boiler
Well as the weater is changing outside temperature can wary alot with humidity and wind. The sensor says 2C but inside its actually 20C and so on. Or 22C feels like 19C due to humidity and the wind.
Older 60ยดs house but I hope it changes with new windows
oh boy 60s
Wonder they didn't make the windows out of asbestos;D
It's good for smoking cigarettes as well hehe
Yeah I would never buy one of those houses if I didnt know the history
10-40ยดs was basically build with whatever we got
fuck I'm old, I need new glasses soon, doesn't help that I have 4x 4k monitor
The general idea is right, better isolated buildings loose less heat which makes heating them less costly
Windows go a long way
Then summer comes and fuck you over

Not at all, it keeps heat out in the same way it keeps heat in
True but people walk in and out, open doors and so on ๐
And then you have 10-40ยดs house where the materials make the air quality ๐คข
I'm on the lookout for some smokealarms and i found the Bosch Twinguard to have a lot of exposed sensors, but as I ideally need 3-4ish the price suddenly becomes a bit of an issue, so do yall know of any other good smokealarms/multisensors that has a lot of different sensors?
Would be nice to combine and replace Hue motion and Aqara multi-sensors with a single one
Bosch Twinguard exposes: smoke, temperature, humidity, voc, co2, aqi, illuminance, battery, siren_state, alarm, self_test, sensitivity, pre_alarm, heartbeat
https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/8750001213.html
Integrate your Bosch 8750001213 via Zigbee2MQTT with whatever smart home infrastructure you are using without the vendor's bridge or gateway.
PS: I had to downgrade my firmware to a 2022-version because i got a lot of BUFFER_FULL errors with this dongle, just a heads-up ๐ migrated from a conbee ii a week-or two ago, so that was new to me

Saving money on safety is t exactly a great thing
But there is no support in here #1284966353798697001 may be able to help
Everything is timber, timber windows, roof, chimney everything
Eternit cladding, ceiling in the furnace room and the old ventillation channels were all eternit
MMMMMMMMMM
And then some toxic material as insulation
Or metal net holding the insulation
There is no insulation ๐คฃ
Something something mesothelioma
I thought you all just built with packed snow..
20 cm of sawdust in the attic
We just added 30cm more celulose blown in
I put 45mm insulation around the old cladding, after taking the asbestos panels off
A story in 7 pictures
My paws melt the snow ๐ฆ
Pretty much!
How is the floor plan?
should have left the asbestos underneith
Well tought out or alot of small rooms?
Soffits and drains for the roof etc too
Less point doing that, no proper barrier for the wind
what do you mean? you covered where it was
I know literally everything in my house since original owners lived here
Lots of works getting shit up to speed but some paint, love n maintenance has helped alot
Still need to renovate bathrooms after the windows are swapped but other than that I got about 5-10years for the roof
Im contemplating repainting my drains but hey the good looking greenish is nice
The insulation sits flush to the wood, with the asbestos it was overlapping, would be veey little in contact with anything else
You renovate it yourself n everything?
howdy I once again start my HA journey, this time I opted for HA green
Else I would consider if that house is "worth"
well you would have had to plan for it to remain accordingly lol
I only had to pay 15kโฌ for my new windows but that is because I know a guy that knows a guy
Totally didnt just pay under the table

I don't do plumbing myself, but basically everything else.
We did windows and doors and the whole cladding
Using a nail gun is really fun though!!
True
But for that you gotta own a nail gun

Basically my childhood friends dad is a carpenter and works for a good sum so if I need anything its pretty cheap
Plumber guy is a friend of my brother and does shit basically for free
I got contacts
I rather have people who know what they do do their shit since I want stuff well done. I just do the basic things and help with carrying
I struggle to find good workers, hence doing most of it myself
My friends dad and his granddad basically built lots of houses around here so I know they can do quality work

That would be very useful ๐
I basically pay my hourly wage anyway
So its just
Pay someone else for the time it would had taken me
Mmm
(I earn around 50k sek a month) before tax
You don't happen to know people in Sรถrmland would you?
Nope in รrebro area
Thats probably where you should had started btw
Ventilation
Before anything else
I have put in FTX but I need the flow rates etc setting up ๐
Also I mean if you have the time renovating yourself is pretty neat
I got a recommended person in to install it, but have no support
I got a 8h work + gf + simracing need and helping my family at the farm so
Oh, sim racing ๐
Iracing?
Yupp
Lost 400IR in formula due to people being fucking a$$ at T1 hit from behind x4
Haha that sounds about normal ๐
We got a swedish iracing discord
Mostly men
xD
Mmm, 23 and 15 ๐
Oh god ๐คฃ
It is bad enough in the summer
I noticed a big difference. We had those crappy 1+1 old style ones
Went with 3 glass wood/ aluminium ones, low transmission edges etc
is there any alternative to nabu casa/home assistant cloud?
I don't mean port forwarding the google home integration yourself I mean commercial competitors that offer a similar service
I am not at Michelles renovating skills, but I do renovate my houses and build houses
And do all electrical work myself
would you consider using a Shelly 1 for a constant ~5A load?
why on earth would anyone, it takes 5s to spin it up yourself
Arent allowed to do electrical
I am more interested in looking at how they would respond to competition, as far as I can tell they have a pretty tight grip on the platform
except intake and new stuff
what a weird take
Then house burn down and insurance doesnt cover it ๐
no house has burned down in the 27 years I've been doing it, so I'll take my chances
Nah but I gotta replace all my outlets, considering grounding
are you a renter?
in what way is it weird?
By 'tight grip', you mean 'they built it'? ๐คฏ
DAMNIT WHY DOES THIS CORP THAT MADE SOMETHING OFFER A SERVICE FOR IT
THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS
where I live changing electrical stuff is reason enough to evict
It's open source. Do what you want with it. But of course the team that built the thing integrated with their own service.
how dare they
if you depend on redis you can migrate to and from many service providers, same with postgres. I would like the same freedoms for my smart home and was wondering if homeassistant supported this
you can do whatever you want
that is total freedom
๐ง
locked in vendor with added cost #2 and #3 is not freedom
it is just choices
I still use redis everywhere I can't be bothered to switch to valkey or all the others that suddenly appeared when they changed the license
No-one is stopping you looking at the code to see how you might implement a similar service. And I'm pretty sure the license allows for it too. But... that's a lot of effort for something that's already cheap and, more importantly, supported by the most qualified team to support it
The people that pay a few bucks per month for Nabu Casa make sure that the devs' children don't starve.
The market value of children is highly volatile.
Children have a negative value... like a car
The odler they get the more expensive to maintain
ugg its -8F here today, last year it was like 40's all winter
Nonono. You're thinking about it all wrong. It has to be about money and competition!
I wonder if it's possible to make an elgato work with HA...
..... no one is forcing anyone to pay for HA, paying is 2 fold, supports the project but also convience, I can tell you my time is worth more then 5 dollars a month
Also hubitat makes money on their crappy hardware(that is required)
(DGMW I like the idea of getting an old crappy tablet out of storage to turn into a wall unit for HA, but also... tactile buttons.)
Lol I made custom esphome devices for that tactile button feel
Mechanical keyboard switches ftw
You want 2 Pulmonary Emboli?
The tricky part is having multiple "screens" but all the same buttons be useful. Which is my big reason for the streamdeck part of things.
I wonder whatever happened to that one keyboard from absolute yonks ago that had OLED screens in every key and was like 1500 bucks...)
The good thing in my opinion is, that it is optional and you can also get the functionality your way.
I up the sub literally to throw money at them because I didn't want the service they provided at the time (now using the backup destination though) but I wanted to give them money because HA is awesome
I remember this, Optimus I think it was called?
(For those unaware who AREN'T taking meds for your back right now because you're old.... There was a site called ThinkGeek that, before they got bought by Gamestop and ruined, used to have cool geeky things in it all the time. And one of the things they sold was a full 108 key keyboard.... with an OLED in every single key. And yeah. it was 1 and a half grand. For a KEYBOARD.)
Not Quite the same board, this one had full height keys, but it's very close.
Also rip think geek
Neat idea but has a fatal flaw... the keycaps will be shit to type on. I had one of the Razer ones with similar keys (for some caps, not all) and it was a PITA.
Oh it's the gimmickiest nonsense in existence, I guarantee you. XD
This was around the time I got my hands on an MSI case from thinkgeek that was ALSO incredibly gimmicky... it was a mini-PC using a weird board standard and proprietary heat sink that never worked, but the PC was also a media center, with a full faceplate for audio that looked like a very weird cabinet media player.
Also it was silver and Orange.
Had an LCD on the front that would tell you what your media was. In the earliest version, you had to turn the PC completely OFF to use the Media center part. MSI eventually patched it so you could use the media player features with windows.
That sounds like amazing jank tech
Oh it was Hilariously stupid.
It came with a remote control for the media center. Which could later be used for windows media player too.
And the LCD would scroll what MP3 you were watching, along with an EQ display.
Reminds me winamp, its kicks the llama's ass
Don't get me wrong, I loved that stupid little box of dumb, but EVERYTHING was proprietary.
Hack an esp to the display and inputs today, have it feed back to the PC in the case to control it
Funny story... the media center features didn't work with winamp. XD
Also it came with an antenna. Because it had a Radio mode. XD
For over the air analog radio.
The early 2000s were a WEIRD time.
I have so many MCE remotes....
Like these classic cup holder cigarette lighter PC trays
XD I love that those started as a joke.
I used to run 4 VM's for our TV's for LibreELEC(Although I don't know if it was called that at the time)
Entirely at their beginning, "Hey, the CD tray isn't a cup holder. So here, have a real one!"
i had one of those!
I think the cigarette lighter is the funnier thing
I can imagine what that PC smelled like too
It was one of those that stunk up a room when you're trying to fix it
I can hear the whine of the older hard drives and the really REALLY loud PC fans. Including one single 80mm fan in the side wall of the case, which was the style at the time...
i remember having a cig lighter power adapter for a laptop and used one of those to charger the laptop from the pc.
Peak performance
probably not great for the psu but whatever... it worked
Hell, this was around when Creative was still selling sound cards with ridiculously over the top front faceplates that never ever worked right XD
The story I heard is they were for internet cafes, give people lighters at each station, especially in parts of the world where smoking rates are higher.
considering it ran on the 12 volt rail, I think cars have a 15 amp fuse so it probably wasn't TOO bad
Also this happened.
LGR has done vids on both, naturally.
Because every PC needs.... an audio casette deck. XD
Had a xeon machine in the basement and a bunch of gt710s
this was probably before psu's had insane 12v rails to support insane gpus though
I have 4 wire homeruns to all the TV's so I'd do HDMI on 2 USB on 1 and then standard network on the 4th
Also because I could.... ๐
"Dedicated rails? Pff. We don't need those. We need more weird chrome accents, and also ridiculously bright blue LEDs! And dragons! The PC needs more dragons!!!!"
Back when graphics cards were just powered by the pcie or agp slot
No external power needed
yeah, i think it was probably early pcie but agp was definetly still a thing
Ahh the days of my first GeForce 2Ti... took that PC to a lan party and everyone else there got mad at me because apparently they'd never seen halflife have the proper overlays on items...
I remember when bought a voodoo 2 with 12 megs of ram and OMG quake looked so much different in glide.....
heh.... gotta get that physX card tho. XD
AGP was prior to PCIE...
S3 Verge, Bay-Beeeeeeeeee
I always thought they were around the same time and could even be found on the same board
it was a step up from PCI 33mhz
I never owned a machine with agp, kinda skipped in there
There were a few boards that had both for a short period of time
Had an agp card though that I gave to a friend for his machine (got it free)
One of the last full boards I owned with AGP had 1 AGP slot, 5 PCI slots, and 2 E-ISA slots.
omg ISA the the slots were white if I remember right
PCI was white, ISA was black, usually.
ISA were the slots that were ridiculously long.
well, E-ISA, but yeah
Is that what it was, ISA was used for sound cards weren't they?
ISA was anything you wanted it to be, just like PCI, it was just an expansion standard. But it was one of the earliest and it suuuuucked XD
(That said, I DID have an e-isa sound card... until it became impossible to get drivers for it.)
I thinking what I used ISA for though, I think it was for like a sound blaster 8 bit card or something...
Behold. My first sound card. XD
its been 20 years since I even read anythign about ISA
okay not QUITE the one I had, but close. Same basic shape. The Gravis Ultrasound.
With a joystick port?
Back when, if you wanted to play Soundblaster or Adlib(that used to be a thing), you had to run SBOS in DOS to get it to work properly. XD
Remember having to make bootdisk to ensure you have enough ram, the first 640k or whatever?
And Yup. Gamepads ran on midi ports. When they ran. XD
heh. I had an entire box of just boot disks as a kid. XD
"This one is for tie fighter, this one is for this other game, this one is for this one..." XD
I stuck on the Amiga for too long, you sometimes had to disable extra floppy drives (or the HD) to get a game to boot, as the buffers the BIOS allocated would eat juuuuuuust enough memory
PFffffff that reminds me of IRQ fuckery XD
"Your system can recognize a total of 16 devices on IRQ channels. And no more. If you have more, it will make them both stop working."
That alone is why I laugh when people say they miss the retro days of PCs. Just that was enough to make me scream. And some viruses worked by duplicating drivers just to flood out the IRQ channels.
oh I miss Tiefigher,
It's on steam. XD
its NOT the same on modern hardware
I don't miss teh game persay I miss the age I played the game
hehe.
I miss playing it on the best joystick I ever had. A Saitek Cyborg 3D.
Which I'm pretty sure was the first USB joy stick. But it had four axes, and I STILL have mine.... it does not work properly anymore. It drifts like Hell. XD
I want to say I played tie figher with a mouse
GLORIOUS. XD
Xwing vs Tiefighter required a joystick though
(Not gonna lie, half the reason I keep it is because I'm trying to find the old EGM or Game Informer mag that reviewed it where the reviewer called it "C3P0's Strap-on" XD)
I remember thinking in highschool, wow things are so realisitc, how could they get better....
heh.
Though to be fair, they really haven't done a space fighter like tie fighter since. ๐
Full in-cockpit with dozens and dozens of things on the playing field. Now we get Starfield where the most enemies you can ever face in space is.... 3.
Squadrons?
Did they ever finish that one? I remember hearing about it during development, then never hearing anything else again.
Seeing it on steam. The reviews are..... well, exactly what I expect from an EA title. XD
its not bad.... campaign isn't long enough
Star field is such a joke of a game. Why did I even buy that on release, I'm stupid
ugg I really want to like PopOS cause I'm lazy and it games great, but their package manager sucks
I bought the special addition 100 dollar version if that makes tyou feel better....
Beccause I really loved Skyrim
I wanted SF to be good. But I knew enough about bethesda to know it was gonna be a shitshow.
I was not expecting it to be THAT rough XD
"Hello. We are two people who have been trying to murder each other across the literal multiverse. We will now stand shoulder to shoulder not even giving each other dirty looks while we wait around for you to make a decision."
I mean, it was basically the same game, just your character is different is basically an author-insert for the leadup to the movie's events. XD
yeah, it was still fun!
These days I play valheim a lot. Really love that game, especially with friends
"He's just a humble worker with his family and Oh hey now he's super important ot the entire rebellion and also best friends with all the main characters" XD It was fun, for sure, but yeah, it was definitely weird fanfic writing XD
Man, all this talk of expansive space sims with ridiculous stories that go on for hours on end makes me miss Freelancer.
I remember when Elite Dangerous was supposed to be new thing...
A game where you KNEW it was the future because someone's cigarettes were Blue. XD
it was TOO realistic...
By the way, one of my favorite stupid glitches ever in a game in Freelancer XD
Too bad they dropped Xbox.
It locked the actor progression to sound files. Which makes sense, you want a speech line to finish playing before the thing they're saying is about to happen happens.
Trouble is... some files were encoded in different codecs for... some reason.
So if you had certain codec files? The sound would never play.
So you'd warp in, there'd be three ships there that are supposed to go hostile and get mad at you... but they just..... stay there.
And at that point the game is basically locked XD
it was marketed as being ultra realistic especially physics, I can definitely believe people have made it ultra realistic
VPE arrived
Now to get it to work in my silly network
It was pretty realistic if you turned off the assist modes. Like trying to dock into a rotating space station without the rotate assist ๐
I'm all in on my VPEs ๐
heh... heh heh...
I might have another one hiding somewhere. they're like rabbits
IS now where I point to the pile of speakers in a drawer that DON'T include the ones I'm presently using? XD
but yea, I have my wifi on another subnet than HA/ESPHome, so I'll have to figure out how to not have to use the discovery to set it up...
I really REALLY wish HA would create some sort of hijack system that could fully take over Google/Alexa devices...
i am weaning family off alexa. slowly. cant distrupt things too much and ruin the good will automations are building
Those Google Home Minis there have had their guts replaced with the Onju boards
not the same thing, I know
the speakers in those are so much better than the one in the VPE. that's the part I miss
I think I've ranted about this before, but letting the server have a simple reroute-what-would-go-to-that-smart-devices'-server-to-a-virtual-version-running-on-HA thing would make forcing integration for so many smart devices(googles included) so much better...
Also might be nice for making the Alexa screens not so bloody intrusive and obnoxious.
Mind you, the tricky part would be maintaining other features like drop-in, package tracking in real time, etc.
speakers is going to be a sticking point for me too. i have a few solutions in mind but havent worked out how to implement yet
I wonder if there's a way to just hijack the bluetooth speaker part itself.
As a lefty I appreciated the reversible grip and throttle, though I only got one in time for Alliance. God those games got hard.
With Google's stuff, you can use it for outbound things with play-to, but I wonder if you couldn't be set up to play the "response" audio to the speaker while just using the VPE as a microphone.... or if there's a way to set up the play-to to be able to both play to And listen from...
And I know Alexa's speakers are all bt capable. I wonder if a bluetooth adapter could be used to let a server or a device on the server take control of that speaker and turn it into a semi-smart speaker.
I would be happy if I could just use the GHM as a wired speaker for the VPE. I could use it as a separate media_player, but that's too complicated
Huh. Brain's doing that thing where it has too many ideas. I clearly need coffee.
(bluetooth controller for HA would open up some smart devices that use BT for... some reason... and also let you take control over all those non-smart bluetooth speakers you have lying around collecting dust for smart home things...)
That first bit is not a joke by the way. I was sent a box of smart bulbs to review. They aren't wifi. They aren't zigbee. They're Bluetooth.
And apparently echo devices can link to bluetooth things. So there's that.
Bluetooth is a PITA because everything uses proprietary protocols. That's not something easily solved by a 'controller for HA'
ESPHome can be good with stuff that's been reverse engineered though.
You guys are getting paid?
Thank Dog
woof

No
are you talking in the 3rd person again
if the person is the kind of person that watches Storage Wars, do you really care if you upset them by shutting it down?
are you married to this person?
is this person in your house?
PCIe can be hotplugged ๐
"internet glitched"
done setting up the VPE. That was a slight adventure
I had to change something in my firwall to allow the back channel (boo!, have we not learend from FTP), and had to setup whisper/piper locally
though the 2nd one will be that easy
How many people are you sharing it with
dunno yet how strict I want to be about the exposed entities though
oh yea, how do I add my own prompts?
it understands "what's the time" but not "how late is it"
It simple. Pull the graphics card and when you get the complaint text reply, "Oh! Really? Let me get right on fixing that, thanks for reporting".
Lolol "just a few"
You have not lived until you used an Elite controller. It's a tragedy how expensive they are.
I enjoy my 50% off discount.
If it's not sold by Microsoft, no.
why do you need a 1080 to watch live TV anyway?
People still watch live TV these days?
people above a certain age
Gotta pay extra to watch those commercials!
If it's cable at least
Antenna I'll allow because free other than the antenna itself
watched 30 minutes at my parents house a while ago. Had to zap 4 times to avoid commercials, then got so annoyed I turned it off
Live TV is strictly a news and sports thing these days
If you can call the stuff that airs news anymore. So that just leaves sports.
Most local news is now owned by one corporation
It's one big monopoly selling the same crap to all the stations
Sinclair, Inc., doing business as Sinclair Broadcast Group, is a publicly traded American telecommunications conglomerate that is controlled by the descendants of company founder Julian Sinclair Smith. Headquartered in the Baltimore suburb of Cockeysville, Maryland, the company is the second-largest television station operator in the United Stat...
Oh it was creepy af
Just think, since they all say the same thing, a deep fake AI could run back at Sinclair HQ replacing all the local talent
Sinclair HQ could just be a well paid CEO, CFO, and a server farm for the AI
Maybe a sysadmin too
elite controller? you mean these that i used to play elite on my bbc b back in the eighties?
now watch it. this old guy quit linear tv long ago.
I am coming down with something today, but I wanted to share this one more time before I log off my laptop. I should be able to start moving things around this week. ๐
I have incoming server improvements posted here ready for feedback: #1285154411114532935 message
Is there a way for discord to ask a question when someone joins a channel"
Like can we do like if user has been around less then 30 days, then when joining "blah" channel have a statement stating"this channel is not for support and make them acknowledge it
I know nothing about discord btw, hope you feel better Missy
ONly show this channel after they posted ๐ฆ at least once
Well people post in another channel and then when they don't get an answer in 5 minutes ask in here
But yes thats an option too
I'll have to play around with the voice intents now
also need to add a way to use it as alarm, so I can finally ban the phone from my bedroom ๐ฎ
There seems to be a new Discord feature where when you go into a forums channel for the first time it will push the Posting Guidelines directly into your face.
Which so far should be super useful for this case.
ohhhh I like that!
- the changes to the find a channel.
Which...oh yeah, need to note that a change to that name should be done.
I don't know if I just happen to be in their A/B testing for this or if it's fully released, though.
Well even if its a future update though
And I think it only happens on mobile.
Right now, brand new people have to wait 5 minutes to post (I think).
Like brand new to the server? or Brand new to the channel?
Definitely the server
Server, yeah.
I will say working from home has made my PTO explode, I feel sick, I sitll work
Since I have a combined sick/vacation, I just get more vacation
depends on how sick for me
Just wondering, will the Google Drive backup integration be much seamless/simplified, currently it's very tedious to setup?
The third-party addon is much more easier in comparison
If someone makes it be better / creates a request for it
We get chastised if we donโt take time off when weโre sick.
It's not really that much easier besides the integration offering to take over the auth to their app instead of yours
Rightfully so
I'd argue it is, with the Google Drive integration you have to fiddle with the Google Developers Console, oauth option would me much better imo (if possible)
The current way keeps you in control of your auth while handing it over to a different persons app doesn't
Maybe they could offer to have it through NC like for onedrive
Either way that's a feature request best put onto the forums
It was contributed by a community member. A request on their repo is the best path for this.
it's not that easy to offer oauth without a centralized service ๐ฆ
is home assistant green or yellow best for a technical user?
neither? ๐
(I'm about to purchase one in Aus)
I don't have the time to buy all the parts seperate
Buying in one ready to use solution works best
Yellow is good if youโre okay with tinkering a little.
You can also just use an existing computer you have, like an old laptop. Or a second hand PC. You don't have to buy specific hardware (though it's very nice)
I somewhat want to migrate my hue stuff to zha but I like, don't want to do the work
Send help
Or raccoons in trench coats
Can someone talk me out of inwall speakers for a home theatre ..... ๐ There's so little information on the web on them because they are all proffessionally installed :/
3 raccoons and a possum on the way

You're losing audio quality by doing that. Unless you're buying really high end equipment anyway
Was looking at some Klipisch(can't spell) R 5502's
Thank you
I'm also debating building these https://www.parts-express.com/AviaTrix-RST-Sealed-MTM-Speaker-Kit-Pair-with-Knock-Down-Cabinets-300-7134?quantity=1

for LCR
Yes am aware I have done this before (using home assistant on a rpi) thanks for the assistance.
My room setup is difficult because of having an ultra short throw projector
The yellow is pretty much a pi cm for that matter
Yes
I like those speakers listed as they are sealed, so I can put them right against wall no port noise to deal with and I have plenty good subs
Or maybe I'll just be real lazy and get some polk ES 20 bookshelf speakers
I dunno what I'm going to do
I have some 18 year old JBL Stage Venue(or Venue Stage) towers and a matched center channel but they aren't doing it for me anymore, they were budget speakers 18 years ago lol
Tranistioning to a 5.2.4 setup
I also considered some Swan 3.1a's but not sure what I'd use for a center channel
These aren't amazing speakers, they were the low low end of theirs
I will not talk you out of this. Sorry.
Iโll egg you on
lol
That would be expensive
Wonder if I used a swan as center channel but then turned the ribbon tweeter 90 degrees
cabinet would need modification, but not a big deal
in-walls get rid of reflections from edges of the enclosure, but you really need a pretty "clean wall" to not just make it a ton worse with reflectio0ns from anything else.
when you say "clean" wall the only thing on my wall currently is ALR screen
but unfortunately not sound tranparent screen
Now I will say I'm THAT worried about sound quality as its in our living room not a dedicated theatre room with hardwood floors and a white ceiling ๐
i saw a room with sound transparent screen and a big recess in the wall almost as big as the screen housing stage pa speakers...
plenty of stuff to absorb sound though, curtains leather couches etc
I told my wife after we spent so much $$ on the projector/couch setup I really want to complete the room with some decent(not highend) stuff
in-walls should have good WAF. that is one point in their favor
Well Swans are out, I don't want 4ohm speakers
did you tell her you'll need at least 80k for a good mid range setup?
No, because I already have 2 moneypits sitting outside (built jeeps) and 2 money pitts inside(kids)
yeah....... but still not spending 80k, lol I'm cheap
well no not cheap, frugal, I iwll spend money
Decoy I do my own work
I have about 80k into my JLU with parts
yeah I don't drove stupid
to be clear, you don't need to spend 80k to get a baller system
I have a rubi axles front and rear regeared to 513's with chromoly shafts in the rear and RCV's in the front
but 80k will get you a baller system and some extra jeep parts ๐
I wish PCIe doorbells were more common
Well, for those of you that don't work with mission critical systems, we have been able to hot add CPUs, memory, and PCIe card for decades
You said doorbell!
And PCIe slots have doorbells
You press the button, and the PCIe slot powers down
Then you replace the card
And press the doorbell again
We had this on pcix before that
Thats not what I pictured when you said doorbell and PCIe
No kink shame
has anybody else change from a sonoff Dongle-e to a SMlight 06 and experienced that the LQI has dropped alot?
Are your devices dropping off th enetwork?
If they aren't, and your purely chasing numbers don't worry about LQI
I have litterally just changed. I actually thought that perhaps the sonoff was not showing the real LQI.. I have not experienced any problems..
just wondering.
Tell me more.
cheers I will. Its the 06mg24 i have.. Its a nice product. And I am looking forward to using it ๐
That too, I'm debating how much I trust the documentation for the Smlight 06, I need to switch from a non POE to POE one, internal instructions say I just need to switch them out and the network will find itself... not sure I trust that
I can send you something else.
we actually had a fire in a sun e10000. those are late 1990's servers. it was running 4 or 5 physically separate servers that it could move around resources to. like virtual machines, but the centerplane switch actually reconfigured at hardware level.
so this server just reconfigured around the board with the fire, and nothing went down...
that's what real enterprise class servers used to do. not the cheap stuff today ๐
the aggregate throughput of the centerplane of the e10000 was jaw-dropping back then. now you see the same numbers in memtest86+ on ordinary desktops. so performance has gotten quite a bit better. but some resiliency features have been lost.
Gotta switch from scale-up to scale-out
Kramer decided to use Kubernetes for his website. Jerry tries to explain what that entails. Kramer is adamant to do it all himself.
banks loved the e10000 as for the quarterly reporting they could "borrow" cpu/memory from other "domains". The dev server would be limping through those times.
and we actually installed one of them on a boat...
Lol
we started preparing how to take the massive server apart and rebuild it aboard, but the customer said that took too long. dry dock, cut hole, forklift it in, weld, boat back to sea.
it was one of the seismic ships used to find oil in the north sea. they also had the biggest cisco router available at the time
does anyone here run a gameserver that they've been able to integrate into homeassistant? - in this case, i'm using LinuxGSM for Valheim.
i'd love to see active players, uptime, etc
If those metrics can be collected that can be done
Usually that is a bit of a hack I individual to the game
Its a steam server so if there is a way to poll information from a steam server you shoudl be able too
well, i'm running it through LinuxGSM which i'm not sure how to pull that info into homeassistant. i can query console commands on my linux vm that will show me connections, etc
just struggling to bridge the gap to HA
you aparently need to clone the IEEE from the old device to the new device and it needs to be the same stack (ember to ember or zstack to zstack)
Yes I knwo however I'll paste to you waht the vender says
i was reading about linux2mqtt or something similar, but not super familiar in that area and figured i'd ask before diving super deep into it
If you get that you could do ssh query sensors but that belongs into a forum post instead of here
It's fun
It's cringe
It's a no attention needed show for the background
If you are switching from another CC26xx Zigbee adapter, in most cases, you do not need to repair your Zigbee devices if you follow these steps:
- Shut down Zigbee2MQTT/ZHA and power off your previous Zigbee coordinator.
- Power off all your Zigbee routers for at least 15 seconds. You can do this at once by turning off the electricity in the whole building.
- Power on back all your Zigbee routers.
- Power on your new SLZB-06/06p7 or 06p10 adapter.
- Start your Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA.
- It may take some time (e.g., 5-10 minutes) for your Zigbee devices to come back online again with the new Zigbee coordinator.
If this does not work, please change the IEEE address of this Coordinator to match your previous Coordinator and repeat steps 1 to 5.
so i know about the ratgdo and setups like it but im looking for something that isnt wifi. Would zigbee or zwave. Doesn't necessarily need to interface with the door sensors or know the position of open or closed etc.
could some simple relay or something just work with the garage door button to trigger open/close?
or if there is anything else youd recommend i would love to hear it.
Not the right channel to ask, however you could start a conversation in related-tech, I'm to lazy to go see your new post, but I'd look into https://www.getzooz.com/zooz-zen16-multirelay/
got it thanks!
I did read that, but could not get the Zigbee2MQTT to work in HAOS.. I have for a long time had the idea of switching to LXC on proxmox, and then having MQTT, Zigbee2mqtt and Home assistant on seperate LCX. So I just set up all LXC. Downloaded a backup of my HAOS, loaded that into the HA on LCX. and removed each of my Zigbee device one at the time, where i added it in the new one Zigbee2mqtt. It took about 20 min. for 30 units.
The only thing I cannot get to work right now is my Frient 2 power meter.
Can't be of much help with that, I run all my stuff in containers(Re the HAOS issue)
no need for help. It's all done ๐ except the Frient, but I am looking into that now.
I think I've decided on my new garden automation for the year, camera with frigate that opens up a valve to spray deer
I ate some food and I guess just digesting is using up all my energy because Iโm even more exhausted.

is that the alpha project for switching out the garden hose with a full automatic gun like in aliens2?
maybe....
didn't think I would ever be writing C again. But here we are. Gonna be an adventure after 5 years of python haha
Surprised it hasn't evolved to D....
Oh. @lone dagger i think my facebook post got deleted. Of an update of a cli interface to the assist pipeline.
I think they got up to F before they moved on to 'cool' names like Rust and Elixir.
I havenโt done any moderation actions today in the FB group, so it might have been someone else.
HA has a FB group?
Unfortunately.
๐คฃ
what did a tantalum capacitor explode?
hopefully its behind a few different VLAns and firewalls don't want that crazy leaking over..
actually it was one of the memory chips on one dimm that started it. that dimm was quite charred
probably.
it was a thing of beauty
each of the 64 main boards was a kind of aluminium briefcase with handle on top that you slid in
when you powered up that thing it did the same as many pc's still do. fans to full speed during first steps of POST. and when that thing did it you heard it across the server room no matter how noisy it was in there
Hmmm haven't looked at frigate for a while, when can replace Compreface and double-take ๐
Really.........
more stuff to tinker(break)
ponders if it would be worth going the AI route
As much as I want to keep stuff local, for tertiary stuff(AI for camera's) I think I will just go the webroute
oh how $ is it though?
And that works with Frigate?
But you need one per camera, right? It's a passthrough enhancement thingamabob?
It's not passthrough (it can be though), but it currently only supports 1 camera per port
Yuck. Frigate and a Coral it is then.
Paying the Unifi tax once would be bad enough. Paying it per camera is ridiculous.
They claim they're working on adding support for 5 cameras per AI port but...Still haven't released it ๐ฆ
Native LPR is coming to Frigate soon, right? v1.16 or something?
Depends on the age of your kids.....
I mainly use to track when our 9 year old gets home from the bus stop
He has no electronics on him
I'm considering buying a gps tracker with a sim to sew into my daughter's backpack
And she has an Xplora that she will start using eventually when she leaves the house
Tell me mora about this thin lora
Well, she doesn't eat much...
Airtags and the Android equivalent are basically interoperable now. Each phone type supports the other's network now.
The issue iwth tile for people to track it you have to have the software installed, but what you're saying is I could just use my bluetooth adaptor thats only turning on 1 switch bot for something more useful
hmmmm that Lora looks interesting
Lorawan not Lora, lost me there
does that integrate with HA for notifications(I know I should just look)
Lora + mqtt is great in ha
Sometimes's it worth it to pay a bit to not waste my time.....
those things need recharging. i used one on a dog that would sometimes go roaming.
sounds like there is tech you can recommend ๐
I played around with a Lora board earlier yes
Even in dense population, antenna indoor, sender inside rf shielded car I got 800m
About $30 if I remember correctly
YuRuiCheng ah yes the trusted store ;D
For those that don't dabble
Lora = point to point
Lorawan = distributed paid network that might exist somewhere
I thought Lorawan also had 4g
oh thats not helpful for me, darn it
None that I've seen, might have come
good enough to connect iot on a field or something
awesome techology though
I will probably be deploying a lot of private 5g forward now
That'll kill a lot of those kinds of techs
Just stick your receiver on a really tall tower and you'll get great range
i just see the lora esp stuff cost 20ish bucks and the gateways being hundreds
I bought a gateway for Arduino for $40 I think it was

wonder what the others do that they thing makes it special
lol wago makes that stuff aswell i cant
private 5g is hella expensive. Lorawan is for when you're on a shoe string budget
its atx
I worked on a product that has lorawan
his basement accounts for 73% of the 5g coverage in the country
they're not really competing I mean
Why not a bt tracker?
Airtag is now possible with HA
https://www.philips.nl/healthcare/middelen/landing/experience-catalog/healthdot <<< this has lorawan
Sure. They say it's been stable though. https://github.com/malmeloo/hass-FindMy
Some LoRa is for when you're on a budget.
I have the expensive commercially-produced kind. It's a very nice system and all plays very well together
But $$$$
A nice write-up here: https://musings.martyn.berlin/3-or-less-location-tracking-without-a-mac
I have been using the generic camera integration to stream an rtsp feed from my nvr. I have an automation set to take snapshots every 30 minutes to create a time lapse. It misses allot of shots and the trace says connection timed out. Is there a better rtsp integration i should use. My cams are h265
aha thereโs the fever I was waiting forโฆ.
I well. Make a post here then. To bad i had a conversation about llm and news running
I think they're reducing the snow fall to about 3-4" here .. which is fine, but the bitter cold coming after it is what sucks
I think this snow is my fault-- I suggested to my wife that it would be no problem to commute year round on a motorcycle ๐
NAM and NAMST are starting to "agree" .. looks like my areas will be getting about 5" of snow
i need to get my snowblower back
I literally test drove one last week-- it was 68F. I don't think it will be above 10F this week. Lows of -8*
not ideal
I wish we still had snow
I miss the days of youth when we'd get pummeled with 2.5ft overnight
don't worry its been swapped for the fun of heat strokes in the summer! /s
Some people do. I think it's crazy.. slippery roads aside feeling that cold air force it's way through your clothes is not pleasant in anyway
mmm wet bulb temperature.
Such a fun thing to have to get to know about!
it's honestly pretty comfortable temp-wise 99% of the year here (and we might get 5 days of slippery roads), so most of the time I really do think it would be ok. I have a car for the 1%.
The people that do it where you get real snow are nuts though
lol snow wheel
This dude's a true one. As you can tell by most comments, most are giving him mad respect!
I've seen people take the 2 wheel drive (urals) out with a sidecar, but this is new lol
I've ridden twice when the temps were near freezing but the roads were fine. never again. chest, hands and feet were fine but that cold gets around the helmet and pressure forces it's way through even multiple layers on your legs.. not fun at all
(people had reported it) I removed it because I didn't immediately see the relationship to Home Assistant, given your short description that went with it.
Just give me a moment to make your message magically reappear ๐ช
well that snow good.
was that... was that a .. pun?
It snowed here most of last week. My son had 3 snow days and 2 late start days. I did the normal thing and took pictures of my crows while they ate in the snow.
Thanks a lot.
My gui editor walked sollid on a big card....
Titled "Dog & Cat meet up for early morning hijinks"
you can certialy tell those two have a bond
wish I knew who they belonged too
so I could rip thier ass for letting them get out like that
@forest edge
it's good you are digging up archives of days past. memories is one thing that cannot be burned away.
See you at the Olympics!
yea we can try Texas BBQ together!
why?
why do i have a compulsion to make things jankier
Hi guys! I have a question about connecting speakers to home asisstant. I have an old Echo hooked up, and I am running automations on it, and it works to say things like "KIDS DINNER" when the wife presses a button. NOW THE WIFE WANTS ONE IN EVERY ROOM, but I can't afford $200 a room to get these sounds setup. Any cheap options?
thinkcentre micro pc? why not add an m.2->eSATA card? just slide that case off. an external enclosure for two HDDs sounds brilliant sure
@static burrow does the bluetooth integration support speakers? idk that'd be my first cheap suggestion
have you considered sending alert to mobile devices? (phones/tablets)
can the alert be baby shark in fullscreen mode
it depends on how valuable you consider sanity
Can someone please help me with installing Frigate? The videos i found online all seem to reference an older method
Everytime I try to start zigbee2mqtt homeassistant restarts trying to fix my door and window sensors the one day I didnโt know they werenโt working someone broke into my house.
What channel should I put this in

Because range
You are aware that I'm rolling out hundreds of servers that are โฌ500k each?
Send one to me please
We just have about 50-100 x2 sites and I only have Vsphere admin not physical acess

we are actively planning how to reduce our vmware footprint dramatically after their licensing shenanigans now that broadcom is in the drivers seat. we actually had to go the legal route to fight the new prices they tried to slap on us.
i did have a lorawan gateway up and running for a while. i'll have to see if i can get it up and running again.
it was a ttn node
i thought it could be nice to offer a ttn gateway here that could cover the local wooden yacht club. enable lorawan based sensors aboard the boats
since for some reason the board decided they did not want to build out wifi coverage
but i think they may be rethinking that decision now. so maybe we can get wifi with a outdoor antenna pointing in the direction of the boats
What sort of distance do you need?
if they do go for wifi subscription in the club house (would make life easier for presenters at meetings, etc) they would need 50-250m (so those furthest away may need a repeater mounted in one of the boxes for electrical outlets)
for lorawan i think it would be just 700m from my house
700m is cake easy for lora, 250m is pushing it for wifi
exactly
but wifi may be easier to get to grips with for a club where the mean age of the members is above 60
i am 60, and i am one of the young ones
I have an outdoor WiFi AP with a directional antenna (rated 8dBi@2.4GHz, 10dBi@5GHz), it provides perfect signal at 30-50m, and just about usable at 100m.
Given a ludicrous amount of gain you might be able to push those kind of numbers, but WiFi starts to get pretty unreliable (hidden node problem, and all that) at distance
i was thinking pull a poe ethernet cable along the electrical cables out to a box 150m out and set up a mesh node there
ethernet limit is 100m
find one 100m out then ๐
we have a handful of those boxes along the shore to offer power out to the boats. but they are metal, so might need mesh nodes for outdoor use and/or with support for external antennas
better running fiber and power instead of poe if your talking 100m+
you could use point to point directional atennas to get the range and then mesh on other side i guess
Canโt get out of the-water-cooler
that is a good option. power is, after all, available in those boxes, but they are connected to power measurement so that we can charge the users. i don't know if there are any non-measured ones in those boxes
first they have to decide to get that wifi anyway. i think it's a no-brainer
then start with a directional antenna in the general direction of the boats on the club house wall
put in another tracker in for your equipment and then just credit that back to them?
that's what i thought could be a workaround
pick the person thats easiest to work with and explain it to them over lunch ๐
would make our meeting room/kitchen area more attractive to hire out as well
if there is internet available without using your own phone
as long as you make it easy most people are amenable to helping improve stuff
No matter what channel I pick done reading check out water cooler covers the bottom so canโt post to other channels
the support channels are forum style. you create a new post in them
You should migrate to our solution
openshift is the new mantra here. the problem is that the big telco software providers say "sure, openshift is what we support. but it must be our openshift"
Openshift is great
but Hypershift is greater
๐
but if you want a stopgap proper hypervisor that supports cloud orchestration and can manage your existing vmware platform while you migrate
and costs a fraction of vmware licenses
imagine paying for hypervisors
uptime means you're not applying security patches :3
or you have rolling updates
(kubevirt is fun though, yes)
we have some ancient systems at $work that don't fail over easily.. and we're going for StateRAMP, which says everything gets patched quarterly at minimum. It's going to be fuuun :D
haha.. thankfully not that bad, but definitely problematic SPOFs
at least we're getting Eng time this year to move away from them
nothing is quite a good a SPOF as a SPOF in critical infrastructure
I know an airport that has a french system for landinglights, it cannot run in HA, so they have two servers, one is on, the other is off, and I'm pretty sure they have never tested the second server

hahaha
or like when I was working with a railroad system and they had a firmware bug that was failing HDDs randomly, without reason, and I told them "you need to patch these systems, because we can't replace two drives a week, and you are running unsupported versions"
"we cannot patch, we cannot afford downtime"
So I gave them 3 months, and they still refused to patch, so I told management to cancel their support contract, no more drives for you, enjoy your downtime
yeaah.. we have a single server in each datacenter, that if it goes offline, no customers can write data to that datacenter, because one of the founders 15 years ago hated databases, and insisted on using flat files instead. (that's the thing we're moving away from, thankfully)
What are a collection of files though, if not a database by another name
or.. the "uniqueness" server, which handles all new accounts, and all S3 bucket creation company wide :D
(sooo much tech debt)
don't come here with your logic @ocean oar next you'll tell me that we had cloud before 2012 and data lakes are just fileservers without any structure
in our case, flat file database means 100-200TB of text files sitting on a ZFS pool >.>
well, they are on pure SSD, but yeah.. it's a single disk shelf each basically
Even on SSD, I bet that's fun for performance
