Hi people. Not sure if the channel is correct. Correct me if required. Thank you.
I'm thinking of a using a pc with 24x7 operation. Apps I'm running are plex, home assistant, adguard, (some backup app) etc, nothing power extensive. Currently I have a PC running i5-11400 with Corsair SF600 80 Plus Platinum PSU with Truenas scale.
I want to know if I can run this PSU 24x7 safely or should I get some mini PC like Beelink S12 Pro etc which have barrel plug adapter? Power consumption is not an issue for me.
What I mean from safely is a Platinum PSU would be safer bet than an external powered barrel jack adapter came with a mini pc?

In that case you should create a bug report on that GitHub repo.

Keeping indoor cats is cruel. But so is keeping outdoor cats.

Solution; get a dog

loud pike
#

Keeping indoor cats is not cruel at all. They are safe, they are well fed. What's cruel is people getting a cat and not understanding that their head is like 60% ear, and doing a lot of stuff like yelling or bashing things or loud music, etc.

#

It's why the cats who are the most chill cats you'll ever meet are usually the ones who live in a home where people don't tend to keep things very loud.

#

(Seriously, you ever notice how older folks with predictable schedules always have cats who are super chill and crawl into laps and love everyone? That's why.)

Though he did almost catch a sparrow once. Mind you, the sparrow was inside the apartment because it'd crawled all the way into the vent line... and had stopped the vent fan with his foot...

#

So I opened the vent door... and there's about a three second comedy timing of "Oh that's a BIRD. Wait why is the bird holding the fan blade.... Oh shit the bird is in the apartment now."

#

Thankfully my ex's kid was a little hellion and had cut holes in her window screen and I was able to chase the bird into her room, close the door behind us both with the cat outside of the door, and open the window and chase the bird out of the hole.

Their products seem to be a mixed bag. Their homelab-darling "MS-01" apparently has issues with the 10G network ports dropping randomly that people are super angry about (mine has been absolutely fine though).
Considering their products aren't absurdly expensive, you do get a pretty decent feature set

Rule 7

Use the correct channels or threads for your messages. If there's a better place for the current conversation then use it, and don't post or link to the same thing in multiple places. Also check the description in each channel before posting, as extended rules may exist for that channel.

warm arrow
#

Good God, I apologize! 🤯

#

I'm literally asking where "a better place" might be, or a different phrasing, or a different anything.

#

And I'm asking here, at the "water cooler", because there is NO generic channel on this server.

#

Imagine a situation where you and I would literally be meeting at a water cooler in an office, and you're hanging out there, instead of just dropping in, getting your cup of water, and heading back to your desk. Would that not be the place for me to ask where the proper place and way for asking a specific kind of question might be?

#

But no, instead I'm being shot down as some kind of villain and the question about where and how to ask is immediately deleted.

iron granite
#

It was deleted, because it was against the server rules.

warm arrow
keen bridge
#

As a moderator it's our jobs to make sure the right posts are in the right place. Hence deleting things in the wrong places.

#

It's also extraordinarily unhelpful to have things left in the wrong place from a "help" side. People answer in 2 places, and it also encourages people to post in the wrong channels because "they did it!"

That said, with either concept/style/layout/setup of communication, wherever there's rules that a community has set for it self, it's usually a good thing when that community also develops a culture of easing newcomers into those rules, instead of just handing them a contract and saying "here, read that, sign it, stick to it".

Turns out my NUC and laptop keyboards treated a special character in my password differently. Everything was fine when I reinstalled and used a diff password. I had no idea that was a thing.

deft pewter
#

Aha. I wonder if they were expecting different keyboard layouts 😅

#

But that's one of the (many) reasons I hate 'modern' password requirements. No-one listens to the advice from NIST shrugR

jagged lodge
deft pewter
#

Longer is generally better, yes. But it doesn't have to be a passphrase.

desert cave
#

yeah, passphrases are good.. length is the only thing that matters

deft pewter
#

But they have this to say on special characters:

Users also express frustration when attempts to create complex passwords are rejected by online services. Many services reject passwords with spaces and various special characters. In some cases, the special characters that are not accepted might be an effort to avoid attacks like SQL injection that depend on those characters. But a properly hashed password would not be sent intact to a database in any case, so such precautions are unnecessary. Users should also be able to include space characters to allow the use of phrases. Spaces themselves, however, add little to the complexity of passwords and may introduce usability issues (e.g., the undetected use of two spaces rather than one), so it may be beneficial to remove repeated spaces in typed passwords prior to verification.

The - character is what proxmox got messed up on. It was treated differently between my NUC and laptop

I used a password with no special characters for setup and changed it to something better from my laptop

you printed the IO shield into a larger structure? rooThink

unborn merlin

also coincidentally.. the board has a heatsink that sorta.. juts out?

#

over the IO shield.. and it would've forced that heatsink to bend back hard against the board if I had used the shield they sent.

glacial knot
#

seems like an odd choice, since the IO shield might need to be replaced with a MB, everything else about a case is mostly static
OTOH, actually replacing parts isn't that common

unborn merlin
#

see that part there that has a notch for it?

#

thats the heatsink that juts out; I test-fit the IO shield without a case and it did hit the shield fairly hard

unborn merlin

its one of those fully integrated mainboards with soldered mobile CPU thing

so if the board goes it all will probably go.. and I do ahve a way to just hit "cut" and slice out a normal-io-panel for anything in the future if I want.

deft pewter
#

What are you planning to run on that?

unborn merlin
#

truenas, plex, my general home server stuff.. etc

#

probably a small vm or two

#

its wild that.. I have an easier time getting virtualized GPU going with a damn mobile GPU than I can with nvidia without taking it up the ass from nvidia. 🙃

#

all while being.. rather power efficient

#

as for why not truenas at metal?

Because its not new enough kernel to have the easy ability to virtualize the intel GPU.

deft pewter
#

I keep thinking I should build a NAS so I don't have to leave my main PC running just to watch media. Then I start pricing it up and decide I'll just pay for the extra electricity 😅

unborn merlin
#

currently have a big old nas that is..

#

I was a moron and built it with dual xeons off ebay + a tesla M40

#

solar zealot

desert cave
#

I just run Proxmox on metal. I get VM support, zfs management, and more up to date kernels than Debian

unborn merlin
#

yeah.. proxmox's ZFS is very... basic and etc

#

so I'm gonna just give truenas its own VM..

#

and toss some stuff into it alongside itself

#

probably databases and etc are going directly alongside it.. proxmox containers will get backed up to its network share.. and etc

solar zealot
#

that is pretty much what not to do ^^

unborn merlin
#

yeah yeah.. yeah.. so you say 🤷‍♂️

solar zealot

unborn merlin
desert cave
#

I deal with zfs at work though, so most of my management is command line. And the installer did a good job of setting up my pools for me, including the root pool.

solar zealot
#

on a scale of things that "can be done" vs things that shouldnt be done, reusing storage allocated on a vm back on the host system is far up the chain of no go

#

but go ahead ^^

unborn merlin
#

tbh its probably not going to directly loop that much.. databases may be inside of it..

#

and backups from proxmox to it

desert cave
#

Just don't use truenas hardware. At enterprise scale it's hot garbage

unborn merlin
#

Or I can toss most database/hot stuff on the proxmox root (and the NVME drive its installed to) and just backup-target stuff into the truenas vm.

#

if stuff fails.. just replace the nvme and pull things back up from an externally stored proxmox backup..
