that isn't hard to get
yes but.. its a marginal extra step beyond the "kiddys first car ride" that is most usual license tests..
so is motorcycles yet.. doesn't deter people lol
The least serious-seeming license test I've ever sat was definitely the one that allows me to drive a forklift on the road.
(separate and distinct from the 3-yearly certification to drive the forklift at all)
I'm reminded of that german safety video I think?
Considering it allows me to drive a vehicle that weighs 35 tons (~77,000lb) with sharp prongs on the front of it, you'd think there'd be a bit more rigor
and I know an uncle who got nearly killed by a forklift driver so.. yeah
here it's legal to drive marked tractors even without any license on roads
They race those things
I think it may be the canadian version of nascar actually. /s
Forklifts here have to be specifically road registered (has a license plate and everything), and have to have indicators which a standard one doesn't
Tell you what though it isn't all that fun. Roads aren't all that smooth, and the only suspension is in the seat
Also only does about 16km/h going flat out
which is why they allow it
Drunk jousting?
Which is drinking while cycling
Need one of the single prong attachments for lifting rolls of carpet
That's a mechanized narwhal
That's a temp probe a a big steak
Too much free time
Anyone play with remote control dampers?
Would love to send most my air, in the morning, to the bedrooms, and then throttle them down for the rest of the day
And I fixed the automations I have for notifications because I had an amazing User Experience. I found out all day calendar events makes it so the calendar doesn’t turn to its Off state if you have sequential but differing all day items.
least it wasn't a racoon furby amirite
Hi people. Not sure if the channel is correct. Correct me if required. Thank you.
I'm thinking of a using a pc with 24x7 operation. Apps I'm running are plex, home assistant, adguard, (some backup app) etc, nothing power extensive. Currently I have a PC running i5-11400 with Corsair SF600 80 Plus Platinum PSU with Truenas scale.
I want to know if I can run this PSU 24x7 safely or should I get some mini PC like Beelink S12 Pro etc which have barrel plug adapter? Power consumption is not an issue for me.
What I mean from safely is a Platinum PSU would be safer bet than an external powered barrel jack adapter came with a mini pc?
Thank you
That would be great
Anyone else have issues with Flightradar24 custom thingy? The log is telling me to create a bug report on the github.
In that case you should create a bug report on that GitHub repo.
Well it would be a bit unnecessary if someone else already did, so I'm asking around first. But I'll try to report it when I get back.
You would have to check that GitHub repo yourself, if someone already has reported that.
And this is not a support channel.

/rant - Writing an integration for HA is an exercise in self harm. I create a light.. perfect, then I created a socket client to connect to my lighting controller... fine - it works. Now merge the code together and hell breaks loose. "Blocking call detected", "This API is deprecated" "Cant do threads outside main loop" . My python is not that great, but having the need for a University Masters degree in Astrophysics is beyond me just to control and ON/OFF. I am 12hrs away from giving up and going back to MQTT
/rant over... breathing again
Thanks.. wasnt asking for support - just a vent, breath and continue
you can get help in #developers
also I would just copy some other integration and modify that until it does what you want
MQTT it is
if it saves you from the plight that is python, alwasy go MQTT
native integrations are far superior than anything you can glue together with mqtt
in what way?
every way
oh no, you don't know one
I suspect there's some around services
but so far I have not had a need to worry about that
mqtt > any native integration
oh, I thought Stefan is gone. But he actually just doesn't have a point
around here they have a pretty efficient (but there are idiots thicker than the regular ones) way to deal with it. 100-200m before the overpass you set up a beam across the road and hang a quite heavy and solid steel sign at the max height using solid chains. when a truck hits that sign they will really notice. and they still have time to stop.
They do also really notice and stop with the other design
Shell command to foobar script over ssh enters the chat
they do, but i do think it affects the traffic a bit more, and costs a bit more to maintain. nice to catch those idiots who do not stop after hitting the first warning though
They should just mandate being able to read and understand street signs as a qualification to operate heavy vehicles
can't do notification based
Not to mention that checking your vehicle isn't exactly forbidden before driving it
didn't think I would really have to argue the benefits of having a native integration but oh well...
you've now twice not managed to provide a single argument in favor
essentially thrice
im not interested in arguing with you
you mean qualified?
Stop being shitheads guys, it’s too early for that
u guys should really get of your low horse and embrace modbus
more of an Ethercat guy
though I don't usually deal with it directly. Just part of our tech stack at work
<--- me opening discord to ask a question to the Home Assistant community and then remembering the discord channel is a hot mess
Always blows my mind when I see people talking about how they're not sure a PSU can run 24/7 on a thing, and meanwhile I'm over here like "wait, you guys turn your PCs off ever?"
...and I think in the entire history of my PC nerd life that is presently rapidly approaching 40.... I have lost one PSU to failure.
this is more of a mild mess right now
Which honestly makes sense if you think about it. Electronic devices wear less from being on steady than they do from being turned on and off a lot. Especially cap-heavy stuff like power supplies.
with the number of fans and other cooling in modern pcs, especially gaming pcs, I dont think I'd want to keep those running 24/7
My present desktop has killed one fan. And that one was my fault.
(I didn't clean the dust screen for a long time and it got choked up)
fan murderer
people simply dont know because its not what they thought about
Also to be fair, it was a corsair stock fan, they're not known for being reliable. or good.
yeah but that fan had a family.. a wife.. kids.. one just starting high school
monster
(I'm the dork who sees discarded PCs at the curbside/dumpsters and comes out with a screwdriver to pick them clean of parts. The fans almost always still work just fine. Same with the PSUs, the RAM is usually pretty reliable, SSDs are usually pretty low on write cycles, etc.
Seriously, the parts I end up killing are almost always mobos and CPUs. And the cpus usually die because they've been in constant operation for about 4 years longer than their listed lifespan. XD
Today I’m going to try to fix up my e-paper display.
I have the basics, now to fuck it up with my amateur skills.

e paper.... eep paper.... that's now in my head forever.
It's not broken, it's just eepy.
EEPY SCREEN
Fun fact: if you set a calendar date in HA to 12:00am - 11:59pm, most times it will set itself as 12:00am - 12:00am the next day as if it’s set to all day.
It’s also inconsistently doing that.
Fun bug. 😂
No, Home Assistant, I want that 1 minute of Off time!!!
😂 😂 😂
I just recently had a PSU die on me after using it for 10 years
I think that's decent
is that a bug or a feature?
Real talk, the only time I get rid of PSUs is when I upgrade a board and it's got connectors my present unit doesn't have.
Hell, my server's running off a 500 watt PSU I found in a goodwill.
set it from 00:01 to 23:59:59 then. (or 00:01 to 00:00 next day)
I set it for 5 minutes at midnight instead lol.
Reminds me that I need to change my backup schedule because I set it at midnight Fridays and that could interrupt getting the notifications at midnight...
o.0 does the backup take HA offline for a moment?
Actually, I don't know now.
I am so used to backing up when I update instead of the automatic backups that I didn't think about maybe it doesn't actually shut down the instance.

Well, I got a notification last night for 1 of the items, but not the other - I have 2 items on the calendar I should have been alerted to today.
Now I have to accommodate for THAT.
🙈
Rip antec bp550, I ran it for 10 years straight before it went kaput, but it didn't take out any hardware when it died

But this is the no support channel, you should really post in the right channel 😉
Powered on my shield, only hissing from the HDMI, no audio at all.
Updating to 9.2 fixed it, 100% conspiracy to get me to update, clearly
Emotional support perhaps
You will have to let the devs know and hope they fix it 😄
I would be curious if it's even fixable. It seems like a fairly easy thing to adjust All Day items but then I think about the fact that I am not sure if other calendars behave the same.
Anyway, if anyone remembers that one time I was trying to get a cute weather button that tells me things like what I should wear instead of the actual weather I am attempting that again.
By 1200am to 1159pm you mean what google would refer to as the whole day?
Yeah. Like, does Google or Apple Calendars do the same thing? Also, is it a unique thing to us since triggers are on states and messages? It's an interesting bug.
Or rather, behavior. I think it's a bug because it's inconsistent.
Google has a button to press to make it the whole day
Yeah so do we.
But if I intentionally set it to 12a - 11:59p some of the items were moving them up a minute.
So it would be 12a - 12a.
Google makes things magic - we don't.
It removes the time and just uses date to date
If only you worked for the same company as the devs that made it and could ask them directly
Like this
It's the weekend. I'd rather speculate.
I am mostly interested by bugs that only happen sometimes
Also, IMO having a whole day option, then asking what day/s would be more elegant
But that doesn't mean your method shouldn't work
I ran into it because the calendar doesn't turn Off if you have sequential but differing items.
So using it as a trigger with a message condition doesn't work.
One of those cases where my automations didn't work the way I wanted them to the first time. 😂
I understand
And then today I caught the if there are 2 or more items on the same day at the same time, you only get whatever message goes On first. 🤣
When you find out what the bug was, let us all know so we can laugh

I am assuming a line of code has a full stop instead of a comma
I bet JLo would randomly dig into this for me. He finds all the weird shit.
Or maybe you make it all in yaml
In that case, someone missed once spacebar press somewhere
Nice. My voice PE are finally in their way
I'm still waiting for my CM5 to upgrade my Yellow.
Lulz upgrading a yellow
FLUFF!!!
I thought it had no face. Took me a moment.
Was bored so i printed this

Anyone have the Watergate Sonic?
Can't remember if I shared this, I got custom engraved tags a while back 🙂
Like just regular tags or NFC tags?
looks to be airtag?
a raccoon tag
I took mine for a walk outside yesterday (harness and leash, for the indoor-only cat). Weirdly he's never been a fan of the outdoors any previous time we'd tried, but had a great time sniffing flowers and chewing on grass.
Taps into the global raccoon network to track things
Look at this big doofus
this may be a cat
My cats like to look outside, but I don't know what they'd do if they actually went out. They don't really show much interest
He's escaped once, when we left the sliding door open a bit too long. He made it along the deck, down the stairs, then stopped right about where he's standing in that picture.
I don't think his plans extended that far. Paws hit lawn, and any notion of what he was there for just evaporated
Keeping indoor cats is cruel. But so is keeping outdoor cats.
Solution; get a dog
Keeping indoor cats is not cruel at all. They are safe, they are well fed. What's cruel is people getting a cat and not understanding that their head is like 60% ear, and doing a lot of stuff like yelling or bashing things or loud music, etc.
It's why the cats who are the most chill cats you'll ever meet are usually the ones who live in a home where people don't tend to keep things very loud.
(Seriously, you ever notice how older folks with predictable schedules always have cats who are super chill and crawl into laps and love everyone? That's why.)
Also cats like predictable schedules. XD
Mine really wants to go out on the porch(I don't let him because he's clumsy and I live on the second floor), but he doesn't really care about the front door, only that I come in from it and he's always happy when I come home.
Indoor cats also live on average about twice as long. Between getting into fights, hit by cars, or if you have larger wild predators in your area.
Hugest thing is just avoiding infections.
The birds and chipmunks also live longer with indoor cats
I swear my partner is telling me about a new "lost cat" post on the facebook page for our suburb at least every other week
Outside has scratches and bites and bugs and other scrapes, and cats have a habit of licking wounds. Which creates granulomas, which can go septic real fast.
"Lost cat: Doesn't really know where his career is going, doesn't really know how to socially interact anymore, isn't into bars and doesn't go to churches so he really doesn't know how to make friends or new relationships anymore, spends most of the day just staring out the window not sure where his place is in life..."
Considering too that birds are the vast majority of what NZ has by way of native wildlife, we like to protect them.
lol my goofy dork cat would grab a bird..... and give it a bath. Seriously. EVERYTHING is his kitten.
Though he did almost catch a sparrow once. Mind you, the sparrow was inside the apartment because it'd crawled all the way into the vent line... and had stopped the vent fan with his foot...
So I opened the vent door... and there's about a three second comedy timing of "Oh that's a BIRD. Wait why is the bird holding the fan blade.... Oh shit the bird is in the apartment now."
Thankfully my ex's kid was a little hellion and had cut holes in her window screen and I was able to chase the bird into her room, close the door behind us both with the cat outside of the door, and open the window and chase the bird out of the hole.
There's an outdoor cat in our neighborhood that has a tracker on its collar. I find it bizarre to have an outdoor cat out where there are mountain lions, but uh they aren't me.
For sure, but we specifically live in an area where there are signs just a couple blocks away saying there are mountain lions and bears.
I am pretty sure the raccoons would fuck up a cat, too.
This cat is still alive, to be clear. It shows up on my patio and teases our cats.
I just find it bizarre to willingly have an outdoor cat with large predators in the area.
What is the point, indeed. 😄
Barn cats...
You don't have your own mountain lions?
had two german shepherds some years back who were experts at chasing cats up trees.
when they saw a cat they exchanged a glance, then one sneaked around while the other caught the cats attention. then the trap was closed and the cat fled screaming up a tree. and two content dogs continued whatever they were doing.
german shepherds are the funniest animals
one of them had found a sand filled spot in the garden that was cool in the summer so she loved laying down there. but it was also a favorite spot for sparrows. it didn't take them long to discover that it was perfectly safe to continue their sandbathing between the legs of the dog. guaranteed safe from cats.
Our neighbours have chickens, which occasionally roam into our garden. The cats stare at them, but don't think they have any concept on what a chicken really is
Maybe they'd recognize it as part of their food 🙂
Mine (she's half GSD and half Aussie) freaked out about a funnel someone left in their front lawn the other day
Yes i got iodine working. feeling myself a leet hack0r
The cat we had long time ago was the boss of the German Shepherds.
good for riding around
If the cat wanted to be alone on a dog bed, the dog had to find another place to sleep.
My credit card is expiring and I cannot renew the existing one.
I have to order a new one and that would cancel the old one - and I cannot use the new one until it physically arrives and it's activated.

Hey this cat in my backyard looks pretty strange
Do you know what breed it is?
(amusingly there were like 3 strays there just watching it or ignoring it)
I had a daytime possum (the other kind of possum, though) recently. It looks like (from the doorbell camera) it fell out of a tree and dazed itself.
Kinda flopped about on the deck for a bit, eventually perked up and buggered off
The possum who wandered in for cat food was limping on one of its back feet
@forest edge still number 2
(gets sent some eufy solar cams. Sees eufy integration in HA. Gets excited. Turns out the integration only works with lights and switches and does nothing with the camera system at all.)
(aggressive head-desking ensues)
That is a cat who is deeply confused and does not know if the weird dinosaur is Friend, Dinner, or Evil.
did they actually secure them and stop lieing about them being secure yet?
I have no idea. XD
These are made entirely for outdoor use so I have very little give-a-damn about if someone can see the feed of the street. But yeah.
like some smart lock vendor who got caught having the traffic between the lock and their cloud service unencrypted? so they issued a "fix" and claimed it was now encrypted. turned out their "encryption" was base64...
yeah i remember that one
I mean, it could be worse. Could be tplink or yi. Which are both required to report back to the CCP with any data demanded and keep NOTHING hidden.... and most of the cameras they sell are indoor...
Which creates a BIT more of a privacy concern, what with the "indoors is where the pants come off" thing.
Outdoors can be where the pants come off too, you just have to believe in yourself
sounds a lot like american... as seen from europe...
Pretty sure my pants coming off outdoors is a violation of the geneva convention. XD
with eufy its not so much the security issue. its the fact they outright lied and said it wasnt a thing and didnt fix it. although they may have done further down the line after it blow up
Heh. Sounds like Jeep. XD
Some white hats found an exploit in the tire pressure sensors that gave them full control over every system in the vehicle. They brought it to Jeep. Jeep yelled at them for daring to publish it and expose the flaw and said they'd "Consider addressing it at the next quarterly meeting".
chaos
bmw had encrypted the traffic on some internal bus. probably the canbus the critical systems live on? but if you patched in something that used wrong encryption key some node on the bus would send the correct one back... probable some dev feature that should not be in the prod build?
For comparison...
Some guy with an Ioniq 5 mentioned that the brake lights, which were entirely within what regulatory bodies require, didn't illuminate under certain one-pedal driving conditions.
He didn't even try to contact Hyundai directly. Just made a video.
Hyundai got in touch with him, said they understood the problem and one over-the-air update later, the problem was gone.
LMAO Sounds like how wep keys used to be. XD
there was the thing in Missouri a while back where they had the 100k govenment employees infomation exposed on a webpage and when they were informed the governer went mad and tried to have the "hacker who read the html" arrested
(For those not in the know.... old WEP secured(ha!) wifi would send the key over the air CONSTANTLY.
So anyone with a basic packet sniffer could check for the same length and composition, and within about 20 packets, they'd have your wep access key for your wifi.
remember f12 might be illegal
wep cracking days were good, wifi almsot anywhere before mobile internet was good
I remember seeing a show on the web where they talked about that that streamed over a VERY early shoutcast station(Imagine Twitch but anything goes, and only about 50 people could watch a stream at a time. Maybe less.).... The same show also showed how to mod a PSP to increase the wifi range using a drill, a new port, and an antenna extension...... and the guy doing the tutorial did it all live. And ground a hole into the screen cover of his PSP.
Same show also had an anonymous guy who had gotten a hold of a traffic light remote... but refused to show it in use and ran away halfway into the interview.
Early web2.0 was a weird time. XD
was the crossover of new tech being available but lots of places still using old tech
well that still happens but not to the extreme it was at the time
heh.... heh heh...
(thinks of state offices that still use dummy terminals. Or how a pizza hut call center I worked at used full physical dummy terminals. Green text and all.)
The lovely combination of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "The only people who knew how to migrate this old system off retired 20 years ago"
a company delivering some software listed a load of x resources that had to be loaded into the x server. that's not the right way to do it. you usually tell the window system about a file containing resources for the running application and the libraries you use will hide all this. loading a ton of resources into the x server itself makes it grow big and need more memory.
so i guessed the application could use a resource file, traced execution to find the names of files it tried to open and bingo. put resources into that file and problem solved
sent email to the company asking them to amend their documentation so customers could use that resource file - and got a threat of legal action for reverse engineering their software...
yup, but if stuff is easily explotable it evently ends up costing more money then the upgrade too
Stupider thing than that. If no one makes the parts, you now have a ticking liability time bomb on your shelf as mission-critical hardware.
yup definetly
Exploits are bad. A board blowing that hasn't been manufactured since 1982 is so much worse. XD
And when you're talking big iron, those boards aren't even cheap new. XD
When I was at intel, we had tester boards in four stacks of test heads.... They all had to be manufactured to spec to each socket...
Engineering did not tell us there was a change between two socket types in pinout. Literally everything else from pin count to the shape was the same.
Four stacks of 12 boards fried. 16 grand each.
absolute chaos, but things like this are a bit less common these days because comapnioes reaised they sort of want to know what people are doing to mess with their stuff instead of people hiding it
Each Board. Not stack.
ouch
yeeeeeeah. Dark day for verification lab.
lots of magic smoke leak?
run a critical part of banking infrastructure for all banks in the country on a really old high availability cluster consisting of 2 big nodes. so old the vendor offers no support and no way to buy a third node.
run both at near 100% capacity
one crashes. the other one tries to take over and freezes up as it tries to climb to 200% of capacity
all payment terminals, atm's etc stop working nationwide
on the last day people can buy alcohol before easter holiday...
when system finally comes up buy a third node used from a broker rather than start migration to a new platform
was cheaper short term and the person who decides claims its having money to do it that way. and by the time its a long term problem they have moved on somewhere else and its no longer their problem
sounds about right, yeah.
<replaces both with a single epyc system taht just does all of it without problems ever. /s >
🤣
or hey maybe a pi5 might handle it fine too.
That Caroline Gold hot sauce or BBQ?
how come you cant middle click open new tabs like in /config/devices/dashboard
am i doing something wrong
did we just turn over 2 pages at once?
Won't somebody think of the children corporations!
How will poor IBM hope to carry on without the tens of millions of dollars of licensing revenue that maintaining the old-ass mainframe system costs.
So selfish
surprised it hasn't just been emulated.
😛
until a day in the future
when the hardware finally breaks and they cant get replacements.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE CAN'T REPLACE IT IMMEDIATELY?!"
"Yeah, we brought this up several times it was always too much for you."
🤷♂️
We're at that point with a few things at work. The kicking-the-can-down-the-road worked for too long, but now inflated support costs are starting to bite.
Getting cheaper to replace things (with hardware that's better in every way) than keep what we have
It's nice when the vendor can't put the screws on at least to force the issue. But either way, not (currently) my problem
make sure to install any new small computers inside of the mainframes. /s
🤣
just open it up and its a NUC sitting inside.
NUCs and a single ubiquity switch
NUCS on POE. 😛
Single wire to each.
sitting on top of the old battery backup units.
Slight cooling deficit aside, I've been quite impressed with these
https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-s100
One cable, PoE powered
I've seen Minisforum a lot recently
they're fairly popular for minipc/NUC types
Their products seem to be a mixed bag. Their homelab-darling "MS-01" apparently has issues with the 10G network ports dropping randomly that people are super angry about (mine has been absolutely fine though).
Considering their products aren't absurdly expensive, you do get a pretty decent feature set
For me, being able to have a mini PC with 10G Ethernet and stuff an HBA in it was a big draw
One thing I will say, having to figure out how to update the BIOS manually from the EFI shell using a flash drive suuuuucked.
Have been spoiled by machines with EFI capsule updates where it just... happens
I mean.. hopefully my new nas thing is stable nuff I dont expect much bios updates from random china company 😄
though I have also considered ripping the bios and taking a look at it.
out of curiosity.
Yea, being able to use fwupd for updates is really nice
judging by that.. I think thats doable if the board is understood or something?
Or somethn.. 🤔
i should get a 2.5g switch.. only recently learned my weird ali board has 2.5g standard NIC instead of gigabit.. may not even ened to go full 10g.
dumping a BIOS? You juts need to find the flash that stores it. They are fairly standard
yeaha I know I even got a dumper for it
The update has to be packaged in a certain way (and I expect there's some sort of signing mechanism to ensure you're flashing the right thing). Doesn't use the same update files as hand-flashing
🤷♂️
was already tempted somewhat to see if I could.. manage to find and enable pcie bifurcation
so I can properly use that 16x slot 😛
I suspect that's harder than just flipping some bits
I do want to look into coreboot at some point though
https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/guide-how-to-bifurcate-a-pci-e-slot/32279/61?page=4
Its not actually too terrible
Just to give you an idea, apparently the Nvidia card, which sits in PCI slot 1, turns out being Root port 3a IOU1 and Root port 2a says it has full x16 bandwidth, but all sub-PCI’s only state x8. Weird design. I’m afraid it’s not going to offer x4x4x4x4 anywhere in this case (especially in this case). (ignore all currently connected devices, the...
I had a laptop back in 2009 that I had to flip some bits in the BIOS just to get virtualisation. Did not enjoy
its annoying that.. active PCIe switches
are so goddamned expensive
(broadcoms fault, actually)
There are some cheap shitty ones from ASMedia, but their biggest one is this:
https://www.asmedia.com.tw/product/249yq0aSx7zRFGJ9/7c5YQ79xz8urEGr1
x8 upstream, x16 downstream
PCIe Gen3 Packet Switching Chips, 24 Lane,12 Port PCI Express Switch, Packet Switching Chip
When you compare that to Broadcom's 48 lane PCIe 4.0 offerings though
its dumb. 😐
its not needed
I just sorta wanted to have all that access
its got 3 NVME slots, 16x and 4x
(the 4x is also 16x sized at least)
obnoxiously I"m pretty sure that 16x is pcie-5
so like.. thats even more bandwidth just wasted on my 9300 SAS HBA
but I did at least (before my ram showed to be bad) manage to get the intel iGPU into virtualization mode so.. I can at least do small VM's with transcoding and etc no problem.
if only nvidia wasn't such an absolute asshole about letting people do that with their cards. 🙃
If only they weren't such an absolute asshole about... name a thing
but iGPU will be more than sufficient for what I want.
especially for my other goal of removing my old dual xeon and moving to this
reducing the godsdamned power usage. 😄
- a tesla m40 and two old ass xeons..
laughs in $0.005 per kwh

are norwats in the south feeling the same way?
No, but screw them
rather unscrew them
Are the norwats anything like the goblins?
goblins can be norwats. not all norwats are goblins
goblin deez nuts OOOOOOOOOOH GOTTEM.
Remind me to find a way to hijack google/alexa's system in HA so that it detects new people and gets them with deez nuts jokes on first meeting...
by a slime domansticated goblins do not count
I could have posted another gif from that show but it's a bit bouncy. So instead... they did the Salt Bae thing. XD
Guys I'm looking for a sensor that measures the outside sun light. So I can automate my lights turning off or on on a sunny day any recommendations ?

Use the correct channels or threads for your messages. If there's a better place for the current conversation then use it, and don't post or link to the same thing in multiple places. Also check the description in each channel before posting, as extended rules may exist for that channel.
Good God, I apologize! 🤯
I'm literally asking where "a better place" might be, or a different phrasing, or a different anything.
And I'm asking here, at the "water cooler", because there is NO generic channel on this server.
Imagine a situation where you and I would literally be meeting at a water cooler in an office, and you're hanging out there, instead of just dropping in, getting your cup of water, and heading back to your desk. Would that not be the place for me to ask where the proper place and way for asking a specific kind of question might be?
But no, instead I'm being shot down as some kind of villain and the question about where and how to ask is immediately deleted.
It was deleted, because it was against the server rules.
JR you can ask those sort of questions here in the future. https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284976732428046461
Without providing the kind of answer that Ender just provided, this is petty behaviour on your part, Jörg. And might I add, very German behaviour, as well. I feel ashamed for you.
Thank you kindly, Ender.
As a moderator it's our jobs to make sure the right posts are in the right place. Hence deleting things in the wrong places.
It's also extraordinarily unhelpful to have things left in the wrong place from a "help" side. People answer in 2 places, and it also encourages people to post in the wrong channels because "they did it!"
Without throwing a tantrum you might have gotten that info earlier.
I agree with you that this server layout doesn't work. This kind of thing happens all the time. But the personal attacks are also uncessary and will probably get you banned
In fact, it's explicitly part of the server rules you agreed to when you joined 😉
I agree, Rosemary, although that's a very harsh interpretation of those rules. I stand by what I said. And if telling someone how I feel about the way they handled something is "a personal attack and gets me banned, Stefan, then, wow, that'd be a toxic culture of all-rules, no-explanations, that I would not want to be around that culture any further.
That was literally what i thought when I joined, that this server setup is totally making it impossible for people to actually exchange, but its such a common setup now, that I just gave up. The good old IRC times are just over, people do not wanna chitchat anymore 😉
It's entirely understandable people wish to keep on-topic and off-topic things separate, as it can get very dense otherwise. But at the same time ... without a certain amount of tolerance for spill-over, that usually goes wrong the otehr way, though.
This has been discussed about a 100 times by now in here. Just search for 'dead horse'
It is also about the attraction of the server
if i can only talk ontopic on a server and have no allowance to drift offtopic on the ontopic, then i will not have much motivation to often look at the chat. I will only look at the discord in the moment where i need to talk about something Home Assistant, so you got 17000 people here, 50 channels and no activity.
(and i am actually already demotivated to ask my most simple question, i put it on the support channel and dont have an answer, cause people do not look at it at all, why should they? checking all the time every thread in the threads channel? People just dont do that)
lol activity is up across the entire server, less stuff is lost in a flurry of messages, and user count is growing month over month
You posted your question on a support channel for developers.
yeah sorry cause i dont know WHICH ONE IS THE RIGHT ONE
Meaning: to an even more limited set of people
so we already get into the first example of problems that exist cause of this situation
what i do with that? i cant post there
You can read it.
and what should i read there?
The text.
oh god, so i need an instruction manual for using the discord?
The first rule of getting help is trying to help yourself 😉

yeah ok, you are right, that is how it supposed to should be 😄
yeah sure 😄
all good
<facepalm>
Think of a shopping mall. If you walk into Sephora and ask for sushi they'll tell you you're in the wrong place. So you need to figure out where to go first.
This helped me a lot earlier, when you posted it, Ender (also @hidden rune!) Because before that I hadn't noticed it, and then I began to understand that (unlike IRC), these sub-threads are an important way of how Discord works.
In general I'm noticing that a lot of older folks like me, who are used to IRC, are sometimes getting in trouble with Discord because of how things work, which can be very different from IRC.
no its actually a concept problem
because of the threads, but i am unwilling to discuss this, because the Discord mods never care for actually caring for the reality. Yeah, so I better leave, cause I don't see anything growing here or of value. I will probably just make github issues. Bye bye!
What if the sushi wants to go out for a night on the town?
You need to get the sushi first and take it to Sephora
You’re thinking of the parasites in the fish rob
you literally just joined, so 🤷
He’s gone

I do have difficulties with these things, as well, Rosemary. On IRC, I might have joined a channel called "homeassistant" and asked there. One single channel. Here, there's so much going on, just alone visually, that it really conflicts with my ADHD (and age, a little bit, as mentioned, because of being used to something else). It's getting better, but oftentimes, only through the kind of conflict you see above. Discord does have a very different culture, and seems not very aware of that.
Also, what's "Sephora"?
Makeup
Ah, probably the latter, then, above.
Pretty similar to me kicking out Lenovo on customer sites 🎉
I have ADHD too. But if you tried to condense this server down into a few channels (which we previously had, in a non forum style) then you have 63 conversations happening at once and no-one gets answer and no-one knows if they did either.
Love seeing people say they dislike the forum channels and will go make posts on something that’s essentially a forum. 😂 😂 😂
GitHub Issues posts are basically a forum thread.
Sub issues soon though
Kinky
ADHD on its own doesn't tell a lot, I think it's the combo of ADHD (and I know similar things from friends with ASD) and things being very different from how you're used to ... that's what let's it quickly get more emotional.
That said, with either concept/style/layout/setup of communication, wherever there's rules that a community has set for it self, it's usually a good thing when that community also develops a culture of easing newcomers into those rules, instead of just handing them a contract and saying "here, read that, sign it, stick to it".
For what it’s worth the admin of the discord ( @lone dagger ) does listen to the feedback and is actively trying to adjust things now
You are more than welcome to review the changes I’m bringing to improve the server. #1285154411114532935 message
But forums also solved so many issues we had before they were implemented
What a lot of people don’t think about is I’m making a pizza for 130k people. I cannot please everyone. I can make it easier for most.
Pepperoni and mushroom for mine, BTW
But #Pineapples go on Pizza doesn't exist
Please, cheese on the crust and no bananas, fuck the swedes
Pineapple belongs on pizza
Excellence
SEE I LISTEN
Wait, what? Swedes put bananas on pizza?!?
... I have questions.
Mostly "why did you think to do that in the first place?‽ ‽ ‽ !"
Have you ever met a Swede?
Yes. A few. I even work with one!
I don't know how I feel about this, I'm going back to the pineapple on pizza thread... it's safer in there.
I read over it, Missy. https://imgur.com/a/best-posting-practices-5u0ps8w looks like it might help me to rework my question and perhaps get a helpful answer then.
Regarding your changes, I think it would have helped me if "find-a-channel" would have had a different name, such as "start-here" ... the reason being, the word "channel" confused me, because (aside from "beta") there's not actually any channels underneath "SUPPORT". They're all forums. So perhaps "find-a-forum" would also work, I just find something like "start-here" a little more inviting.
I am imported though
I’ll consider that, thank you!
No, she's a raccoon
Or even #where-to-ask-a-question
How many kids I've seen the last few years on tech discords that go "I've tried putting it into chatgpt and having it do it for me, but it couldn't, help please"
I hear there's also going to be dolled up sushi
Yes, everything has its use, but I've seen so many tech kids that have fundamental understanding lately
There should be a "where to ask the where to ask channel is, channel" 😛
Heard a story about a development company that hired a young guy who didn't know how a physical keyboard worked, he had just programmed on the ipad
LOL
Like my wife, she has started working with power bi 6 months ago, now the company hired an external power bi consultant, and my wife has to teach him

I’ll call out that those best practices are hidden here: https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284978161402253474
that’s why I’m moving them, to be way more helpful.
I think that’s going to become more and more normal.
what's everyone using for their ultimate note taking app and is it integrated with AI? TriliumNext and Obsidian come to mind
My job is definitely safe then
Is there an easy way of finding my last threads which have no response? Except for searching from: username which can show a lot.
Oh... Was just about to suggest that.
The threads are obviously shown below the channels but they are removed after a while of inactivity/no response.
They are closed, not removed.
Yeah, meant removed from the list on the left
Ah, yes. They disappear from that list when closed.
How fast are they closed?
After more than 7 days of inactivity we close them or when they are marked as solved.
But there's no way of seeing that it's closed except for it not showing on the left?
In the list of topics they show up as "older posts".
But Discord has no search filter for that.
Ok. Is one allowed to bump unanswered thread? I assume that's preferred over creating a new thread?
In this case it would be okay. It should just not be bumped daily to stay on top of the list for example.
This is something I want to solve with a bot. That’s a lot of work though.
How would that work with a bot?
bots can do messages only you can see (as channel) or could fork out to DMs
And provide some more advanced query capabilities. Mostly with links to messages / threads
Rather than starting a whole support thread... simple question... .do I have to have a MATTER hub to control matter devices? Or does it work over wifi? Does the matter plugin simulate a matter hub?
There’s no support here - only chill. Come in, grab a drink, chat with your fellow community members! This is a space to talk to other smart home enthusiasts. If you’re looking for support and unsure where to go, check out https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284968640189304913 - it should help you find where you are going. I'm really impressed with the voice preview capture quality
Even from across the room it totally understands me. The wakeword and my question (using faster-whisper medium)
I thought 2 mikes might not be enough but it works great
Depends on the device. Some matter devices use wifi. Others (especially battery powered ones) use Thread. For the latter you do need a hub. The idea of matter though is that one hub controls everything. So you don't need a box and app for each brand. We have this for zigbee too but with matter it's more official. With zigbee this is more hacky.
mine shoudl arrive soon
my secret weapon is really bad memory. whenever i have not worked on some tech for a while it is wiped from my mind. so i have to keep relearning. which means i learn really fast. still at my age. and with a solid academic and technical background i often end up as a mentor for colleagues even if we start simultaneously on new tech. so my message is; never stop learning. it's never enough.
by relearning all the time i don't get stuck in old ways either. big win for bad memory. 😛
Yeah I'm even thinking to buy a second one for the other side of the flat
I was originally planning to wait for the consumer version
I mean I assume that will come because this is a 'preview' so there must also be a real thing right? 😁 Otherwise what is it previewing
I ordered 2 to begin with
yea, Nabu Casa messaging was that they don't currently plan for a V2 / Non-Preview
Previewing the future of voice assistants. 😊
We don’t plan to release another version at this time. But that’s why we open sourced it - so others can take what we started and take it to new places. Some people have, they share projects in the ESPHome server.
Ah ok clear then I'll order a second one
I like the iPod wheel too
The first gen ipod had a mechanical wheel like that too
I still have mine.
Hey, I'm not sure where to post this and if people are already aware, but I just saw a failed connection attempt from what I presume to be a DigitalOcean droplet in India. My server is exposed through Nabu Casa and through a public CloudFlare tunnel.
I don't know if Home Assistant already requires everyone having a password, but if not, it should probably become a requirement, at-least when exposing through Nabu Casa.
well what do you want to tell us with this
one would expect that login attempts fail if the authentication is invalid
basically, I'm just trying to warn that there's bots out there looking for Home Assistant servers they can connect to. I do expect that for something like an SSH server, but I find it very weird that some would look for Home Assistant...
do you know which protcol those are trying to connect to? are they trying to connect to Home Assistant?
whatever "they" are doing is nothing that people need to worry about
the message just lets you know
I was warning at all about it because I don't know whether Home Assistant requires users to set passwords. If it doesn't, then these may be able to authenticate on people's passwordless servers. Otherwise, I agree, nothing to worry about.
i mean you could literally check to add a user and login without credentials ^^
in case you want to feel extra secure you have the ability to enable 2fa access
weeiird, I should setup something like you to get more insight 😅 I don't know if that connection attempt came through my cloudflare tunnel or through nabu casa
one passive/invisible kind of captcha: have input fields in the html code that are hidden from view. if a bot fills them out during attempts then you know it's a bot attempt.
that would be rather weird for a bot to do
there is usually no need to fill out forms if they can send the request directly
they often fill every field they see, especially if they are trying to create a new user
which they can not with ha i think
it would be very non targeted if that were to happen
which most bots are for most users
having ssh on port 23 already removes most of the noise
i wouldnt even bother with that can easily block those away and use key auth
i see a lot of attempts on a few joomla sites i manage, and invisible measures like that really work
if they are up to using exploits in your software, your passwords dont matter
the web is even more fun because they just grab your locations from the certs you are issuing
and those bots are quite stupid. even if they always fail in creating a new user they still try logging in as that user afterwards
Yea, any login that's not asymmetric high entropy is clearly wrong
What?
yes
try enforcing 2fa in a yacht club with average age above 60
do you mean location=hostname and CT logs?
Otherwise you gotta expand on that
sorry, not rich enough to care about yacht clubs
both as in hostname and as in guess about the software you might be running
old wooden sailing yachts. not modern expensive
which field in the cert allows to deduce the software? 🤔
I know plenty of servers tell you when you ask them, unless explicilty configured not to
you literally give out a name
that's not what I asked
thats literally what you dont seem to understand
how does the name tell you about the software?
because stuff more often than not gets named after what it is
oh, you mean if it's ha.$domain and done via a specific CT logged cert
Yea, don't do that
yes this, or even worse using the free ones you get at like wordpress n stuff
in my case, my domain is home.*****.
tho the actual bad thing about it is that they know an endpoint where things are even if they cant assume directly what it would be
I get a wildcard for *.local.$domain via LE's DNS01 challenge
And the ones we have for work are code/product names, not underlying software names
wildcard solve some of it at least for home systems
just dont use them anywhere real ;D
Why wouldn't you?
potential damage of loss
being able to validly be anyone isnt great if that were to appear in multiple places
Ehh. Though I want to change work to the 6 day certs once LE offers them
id prefer simply getting specific certs grouped by their host location
for access from outside to my homelab my dns records are just cnames to a duckdns ddns, and hits the same nginx instance that handles the le cert. and then uses self signed on the back end.
makes me wonder whether the ingress proxy in GKE supports pkcs12 so we could push the private key for the certs into KMS
self signed
I think I only have some of those for the intra-cluster communication
i could see this being available through kms somehow
id be too lazy for that ^^
if it cant automagically be done with le over caddy/cert.sh im not interested
^^ I just have 0 interest in distributing that trust
at some point i wanted to switch to traefik for better monitoring but their stuff is just buggy as shite
also they dont allow you to do minor scripting
hurr durr write go middleware to fix request ips from proxies
I own one domain for my internal stuff, one for my external stuff and one for my lab
u sure that you dont have your own tld for your basement?
Need to get time to spin up that metallb and Kubernetes, but I'll wait till I get my four new nodes
.fritzl

Is that the fritzlbox integration?
would be rather locked down

Hi im relatively new to HA and im trying to get started and i need some targeted help to get a few things going.
I'd like to post my questions but i cant seem to post in any room here besides this one, Can somone help me redirect the following questions the right way.
- i've done a HAOS virtualbox install on top of fedora server, but, i cant seem to ssh into the VM, despite HA working
- the side effect of this is I cant seem to install several things, like HACS, as well as the esphome-influxdb plugin, so i can use influxdb with my shiny new esphome device. Not sure if there is a workaround for this.
Please help.
Both of these are os related and are pretty common there are lots of guides out there just by googling that, that said, no support in here
I have searched the installation help section and despite the assertion this is common in dont see it there. Should I post in "installation" ? It would be great to find a community where this is an opportuntiy for real time feedback.
Installation would be the correct place probably yes
Is duck dns working for you. I had troubles with some old dns to my laptop with duckdns i use dynu. Free global domain!
never had a problem with duckdns. i have only that one ddns there. my own domain is at 101domains i think as they took over the tld i am at.
Cloudflare Tunnels + a real DNS record is way better than that DDNS nonsense. And if you happen to have CGNAT, it also defeats that.
I dunno... I have 2 ISP providers at home, and using DDNS, with a script on my router that updates as necessary. Been doing that for a while now. 🙂
... but, that being said, I also have a real DNS.....
if you have a domain you can just use those records directly
no need for a third party service if they dont also tunnel the traffic
yea, only reason I use something weird is becasue namecheap doesn't provide a proper api :/
they do have their dyn a records but no aaaa tho
Namecheap 😅
do they now? When I last checked that wasn't easy to automate
though it also fell through for dns01 challenges, so unless they fixed that^^
Was free with some github student offer way back when and so far I've been to lazy to switch 🤷
they have for a while but they actively have a terrible api and ui
id just move my domains to cf or others ^^
I was using Route 53 for everything until recently. Only switched to CF because I'm behind CGNAT at my new digs.
for cf if anyone asks
#!/bin/bash
function update_dns_entry() {
echo "Updating DNS Record $3 $4 $5 --> $6 (proxied=$7, ttl=$8)"
curl -s --request PATCH \
--url "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/zones/$3/dns_records/$4" \
--header "Content-Type: application/json" \
--header "X-Auth-Email: $1" \
--header "Authorization: Bearer $2" \
--data '{
"content": "'$6'",
"name": "'$5'",
"proxied": '$7',
"ttl": '$8'
}' > /dev/null
}
echo "Updating DNS A Records On Cloudflare"
ip=$(curl -s http://whatismyip.akamai.com/)
ipv6=$(curl -s http://ipv6.whatismyip.akamai.com/)
echo "My IP is $ip / $ipv6"
# update_dns_entry "email@domain.tld" "auth key" "zone_id" "record_id" "name" $ip "proxied" "ttl"
oof.
not sure where my other scripts for netcup and namecheap went but well i dont need those anymore ^^
Eh, it's fine. Didn't take long to solve. At least I knew what it was as soon as it happened 😄
Must be rough for people that don't know and fight it for longer than they have to
which is probably the vast majority of the poor end users to that trash.. 😦
Well... there are a ton of people behind them, but how many of them are trying to self-host from home? Can't be a huge proportion, right?
Luckily most dont in those kinda ways
Like with how many applications offer remote access through company services they may very well never notice
Exactly. If you don't need an incoming connection to initiate the comms, you're golden.
Are there any channels/servers/resources that discuss other things you can do with proxmox? I'm comfortable with my HA setup and now I'm looking for other things I can do with my NUC
Depending on the form factor, you can rest a hot drink on top to keep it warm for longer.
And if you're just interested in seeing the kinds of things people selfhost, I'd probably say have a scroll through /r/selfhosted
I think imma try a locally hosted AI model that only references my notes and ebook collection. Seems like a cool idea.
Especially if it can dig through my Obsidian stuff
I'm still in the inspo phase
I'm about a month behind where I thought I'd be with my setup. Hard lesson learned: I thought I had some massive flaw because I couldn't set up proxmox. Turns out my NUC and laptop keyboards treated a special character in my password differently. Everything was fine when I reinstalled and used a diff password. I had no idea that was a thing.
Aha. I wonder if they were expecting different keyboard layouts 😅
But that's one of the (many) reasons I hate 'modern' password requirements. No-one listens to the advice from NIST
are they still recommending the sentence-type passwords?
Longer is generally better, yes. But it doesn't have to be a passphrase.
yeah, passphrases are good.. length is the only thing that matters
But they have this to say on special characters:
Users also express frustration when attempts to create complex passwords are rejected by online services. Many services reject passwords with spaces and various special characters. In some cases, the special characters that are not accepted might be an effort to avoid attacks like SQL injection that depend on those characters. But a properly hashed password would not be sent intact to a database in any case, so such precautions are unnecessary. Users should also be able to include space characters to allow the use of phrases. Spaces themselves, however, add little to the complexity of passwords and may introduce usability issues (e.g., the undetected use of two spaces rather than one), so it may be beneficial to remove repeated spaces in typed passwords prior to verification.
Giggidy 😊
ive used stuff like the-blue-cat-jumped-over-the-purple-d0g
hey, that's my go-to password!
i thought it was hunter5
Perfect. Easy for you to remember, hard to an attacker to guess. High entropy = win.
rip my blue cat and purple d0g
my favorite was a bank that had a password maximum length of 8 characters
The - character is what proxmox got messed up on. It was treated differently between my NUC and laptop
I used a password with no special characters for setup and changed it to something better from my laptop
Been thinking about grabbing a yubikey too
I'm just worried about losing it
That is seven if you end with a ! Like many
I keep mine with my house key. Means I take extra good care of it (and that I'm doubly fucked if I lose it 😂 )
But if you're going to get one... get two. Set them both up with the same credentials, then keep your backup one somewhere safe.
Does your house key have a bluetooth tracker?
I'm sure I've heard stories of places where the password worked even if you added extra characters beyond the allowed limit. Which means that either they trimmed the input when it's longer or that they stored the password in plaintext on the backend. I really hope it was the former 🫠
It seems like you can leave it at home unless you need it for work. I don't think any services would require reauthentication while you're on the move
The yubikey*
Traveling seems like the only precarious situation
is this channel strictly for non-specific discussion, or can i ask a few obscure hardware-related questions in this channel?
not entirely sure precisely what i'm looking for so i'm hoping to throw a few random questions out and see what comes up
It's for non-support discussion. Sounds like you're after support, so should be looking at the other channels/forums.
wish it was actually a channel and not a bunch of threads but i guess we'll see how it goes
But it isn't.
it's post/forum style - as in forum threads.
Oh damn, I can use proxmox/HA to run utilities for my seedbox
I can even self-publish my obsidian stuff
Selfhosting is pretty cool
||the rabbit hole has opened||
I'll start with a LLM/Reasoning model that only references my personal data. That way I can get quick and specific results from my research, like "What are commonly used preparations for medication X in small parrot species"
General AI stuff has too much noise to do that correctly
in case you weren't already aware, https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted
This is 1000% what I was looking for. Thank you!
Mods can I link a server for Nate, since it seems they're getting into selfhosted/homelab territory?
or do you want a DM? @jagged lodge
We do have #machine-learning
DM is cool, thanks for asking!
im heading in there too lol
cries in itanium devs counting from 0 on sockets and hpux devs counting from 1 on cpus
replace cpu 1

dont they count itanium systems in multiple of 0

I mean.. you can with cloudflare tunnels.
now you're speaking my language
what do you guys think about https://www.amazon.com/Cync-Undercabinet-Fixtures-Changing-Christmas/dp/B0D4ZT54VG
Use GE Cync Color Changing Smart LED Undercabinet Puck Lights to change the vibe of any space in seconds. Designed for modern living, these sleek, compact lights provide bright, adjustable illumination wherever you need it. Use for smart task lighting in the kitchen, home office, or bar to provid...
Those look nifty
And it seems Cync works okay with HA so yeah
I just can't find anything that is good for undercabinet lighting lol
Can you link it? I can't seem to find it
led strips and wled.. or just smart-relays.. 😛
I didn't buy them with my washer/dryer, but decided I needed them after a day or so
Big difference in usability + a useful drawer
Washing machines are frickin' heavy, BTW
I thought I could get it up there myself and there was just no way
SO heavy. I had to move mine today and it was not fun.
I think they literally have weights in the top to dampen vibration
For front loaders
Yeah
I got the dryer up there myself
I started to try to move it while running and that was a mistake. Water is also heavy.
I assembled on the floor and levered it up
yeah.. they should come with em
we had to replace the washer most recently with a new one.. doesnt have one.. i should just make a simple thing with 2x4's and some wood to fix that.
gotta find a 2x4 wood integration.. 😛
thats what my gf is for
triggered by sunset? 🙂
meh just add a cross-brace.. 🤷♂️
squares weak shit.
triangle strong.
or hexagons.. But I am not doing that with dead tree carcass.. 😛
hexagons are the bestagons
the vent holes in my custom printed case are.. yes
you printed the IO shield into a larger structure?
yeah, why not? 🤷♂️
also coincidentally.. the board has a heatsink that sorta.. juts out?
over the IO shield.. and it would've forced that heatsink to bend back hard against the board if I had used the shield they sent.
seems like an odd choice, since the IO shield might need to be replaced with a MB, everything else about a case is mostly static
OTOH, actually replacing parts isn't that common
see that part there that has a notch for it?
thats the heatsink that juts out; I test-fit the IO shield without a case and it did hit the shield fairly hard
if I ever change this in the future sure.. But I don't see that happening anytime soon.. 🤷♂️
its one of those fully integrated mainboards with soldered mobile CPU thing
so if the board goes it all will probably go.. and I do ahve a way to just hit "cut" and slice out a normal-io-panel for anything in the future if I want.
reprint one part that takes an hr and a half.. and move on 😛
Well, yeah. This conversation started when I mentioned CF Tunnels 😂
\o/ my new little.. homeserver/nas is.. slowly coming together..
slooowly.
mmm.
comical amounts of cores.
minecraft server
nah.. I'm past that point.. 😛
but waiting for some parts to show up to.. continue further.
also free time to continue building my 3d printed body.. 😄
48 cores?
why 14650hx? that's a mobile CPU?
because thats what the weird chinese mfr put on it for a decently low price?
What are you planning to run on that?
truenas, plex, my general home server stuff.. etc
probably a small vm or two
its wild that.. I have an easier time getting virtualized GPU going with a damn mobile GPU than I can with nvidia without taking it up the ass from nvidia. 🙃
all while being.. rather power efficient
as for why not truenas at metal?
Because its not new enough kernel to have the easy ability to virtualize the intel GPU.
I keep thinking I should build a NAS so I don't have to leave my main PC running just to watch media. Then I start pricing it up and decide I'll just pay for the extra electricity 😅
currently have a big old nas that is..
I was a moron and built it with dual xeons off ebay + a tesla M40
.... so thats probably 150-200w at idle.. before HDD's?
this thing tho.. dumb amount of cores
and even at max turbo (which I will probably never actually need) it'll come in under less..
sonoff has a switchable usb plug hehe
I just run Proxmox on metal. I get VM support, zfs management, and more up to date kernels than Debian
yeah.. proxmox's ZFS is very... basic and etc
so I'm gonna just give truenas its own VM..
and toss some stuff into it alongside itself
probably databases and etc are going directly alongside it.. proxmox containers will get backed up to its network share.. and etc
that is pretty much what not to do ^^
yeah yeah.. yeah.. so you say 🤷♂️
yea those recommendations are made because there surely are no issues with it at all
https://www.truenas.com/blog/yes-you-can-virtualize-freenas/
Yet it can be done..
I deal with zfs at work though, so most of my management is command line. And the installer did a good job of setting up my pools for me, including the root pool.
on a scale of things that "can be done" vs things that shouldnt be done, reusing storage allocated on a vm back on the host system is far up the chain of no go
but go ahead ^^
tbh its probably not going to directly loop that much.. databases may be inside of it..
and backups from proxmox to it
Just don't use truenas hardware. At enterprise scale it's hot garbage
thats excellent then.
I can't afford that shit anyways. 😛
Or I can toss most database/hot stuff on the proxmox root (and the NVME drive its installed to) and just backup-target stuff into the truenas vm.
if stuff fails.. just replace the nvme and pull things back up from an externally stored proxmox backup..
I should check if we're going to still throw the old hw off work's roof

"And how does that make you feel.."
One of the favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies (1999) Office Space.
like this? 🙃
osha people couldnt even see it comming ^^
A bit higher up but basically
the hard parts getting it up tot he roof probably
Also you don't need to ping me every message lol
too bad. 😛
tho not for long.. since imma sleep now
do have to decide how i'm gonna do my reverse proxy tho.. I could keep my current little SOC thing (odroid h2+) maybe.. but.. hm 🤔
have a jetKVM coming soon to give this weird motherboard remote acess as well.
and planning the power supply of it to be DC-ATX with a DC-UPS +LifePO4 cells instead of consumer grade thing.. 🤔
no double conversion.
probably stupid levels of runtime as well
I mean.. ping me too much and I'll just block you :p
wtf is even that name color? 😛
It tells you when you click their name
Weird chick club!
purple
yes but more curious about the.. why.. and what even
why not
Blame Missy
the swag is there
I'm waiting for someone to have an octarine coloured name
Oh I missed out on confusion of Missys
we dont talk about that
Hehehe
nothing happend that day on town square
there is no war in ba sing se
Sometimes I see people getting really into this discord business and all of these things, and wish I could bring myself to give a shit 🤷♂️
never.
got your cold fusion power plant working yet?
Who needs that with free power
how did you get free power anyway?
Abstraction
Abstracting electricity is a statutory offence of dishonestly using, wasting, or diverting electricity, covered by different legislation in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The law applies, for instance, in cases of bypassing an electricity meter, reconnecting a disconnected meter, plugging an electronic device in...
yea, don't build solar, build antennas 😂
great the lastest update broke my voicemail system. and the backup it to long back. just great
As a function of? 🤓
Do you all have cute DNS names for your external HA systems or is it just homeassitant.example.org?
wdym external HA?
I don't expose my instance outside VPN because it doesn't easily beyondcorp with the app 😦
norway hydro go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
aren't you in sweden?
I like how it's not uncommon to see the UK importing hydro from Norway, and exporting the same amount to Benelux, thus turning Great Britain into a gigantic bus bar.
electricity trading is wild
How would he run half of Norway's internet from there?
vpn? onsite monkeys? idk
yuck no
That said, I run half of the worlds infrastructure @glacial knot
get your facts straight

i or NI?
I think there's some HPE hardware that flies over that area every 90 minutes or so, do you handle that too?
that is outside your security clearance
Not all of it 😉 https://www.hpe.com/us/en/newsroom/press-release/2024/01/hpe-spaceborne-computer-2-returns-to-the-international-space-station.html
HP? dont you mean DY?
VPE delivery announcement for tomorrow
** and live under distribution lines.
Oke my voicemail system works a bit somehow.
Need to recode my functions to make an appointment or send a message to pickup.

heh yeah they reinvented the wheel
Hardware
Networking interface Bluetooth 5.0, BLE
Max. TX power 5 dBm
Max. power consumption 77mW
Power method Lithium battery CR123A
... the fuck? 😖
Ubiquito sure like adjectives
long range BLE? That's the BT satellites for HA, right?
they're the apple of networking
.... who reelased a door access control for enterprise that was so fucking poorly made that it broke by being outdoors
and that they replaced with no questions asked because of that
Sounds very secure
but does it have AI? and RGB?
I'll make it a subscription!
I use nginx manager add on. I have it create a certificate and that lands in addon_config. I want to use it in another addon so i want the files in /ssl, what is best way to do that?
I'll just leave the door unlocked so I don't run over my monthly unlock limit...
Yeah i asked there, i just updated it with my better worded question
I can say at least it is.. configurable locally
that is at least a benefit.. for now at least
finally got my proxmox server setup and HAOS vm setup, time to start my first setup 🤞
Please just don't be 2.4ghz
2.4ghz protocols are a dime a dozen and all just slow down the rest with cluttered airwaves
I got the impression they had both their own new protocol and BLE
Yet another dumb protocol then, I'll stick with 900mhz zwave over all of these other 2.4ghz protocols (I can just use Wi-Fi if I want 2.4ghz)
im looking to get the SLZB-06, and Zooz 800, and get rid of my Smart things hub. That is all I will really need right?
yep i just got HAOS setup on my little server 👍
I guess one other quick thing before i start looking at more zigbee products.
I can get the Ikea Zigbee stuff and use it without their Dirigera hub and integrate it directly with HA correct?
<@&330946878646517761> ^ seems like a scam to me
well, yea. It points at a short link, not the actual visible link
Thx. Gone.
still unsure whether it was an overall win or fail of discord to allow markdown link styling :/
Now decoy is next.
Slzb-06 units are a SCAM!

We clearly need to have fewer chat channels, since those are only ones that spammers seem to target
I am calling UPS today for a receipt and this number I called said my wait time and...now there's nothing. No hold music, no marketing messaging, just deadass silence.

I would literally prefer that
the music is a test in maintaining sanity
This is what I get for not printing it...
Sooo the truth comes out!
Regret!
Perosnally I think all package delivery companies suck, I wish you the best of luck
Although, you could try a UPS store?
Negative. It's an international package.
In fact, the person I finally got said that he can't help because of that. Now the new line I am on says there is a wait time of over 35 minutes.

Just gonna have my phone in front of me on mute while I work I guess, lmao.
In every larger super market
now I wonder
will we have to pay additional duties for importing from the UK to the EU?
I did customs clearances in my last job. Still have an own customs account. But most parcel services don't let you do it yourself.
Rude.
yea, they want those sweet 15€ fee
I may have about 10 more minutes of waiting. Let's see how true that ends up being...
are you completely outside? norway is in the eec (not full eu member), and afaik we don't pay any import taxes from eu?
@lone dagger I only thought UPS was trash in Sweden
Good to know it is like that in the US too
They are the most inflexible company I have ever dealt with
in my opinion it's FedEx>USPS>UPS>DHL bad to worst
I have never had a good experience with UPS. They lost my wedding ring that I sent back to the designer to get resized, I bought a new one while we were filing the claim to get the insurance we put on it, and then they miraculously found it weeks after I bought the new one - putting us out a couple thousand dollars.
I was circled 4 times while trying to get this package to Rosemary in the first place because we fucked up the post code.
We only have dhl and ups of those, dhl have been pretty solid for me. Best I ever had was the guy who brought my windows, 14 windows on an oversize pallet, 490kg worth, helped me to push it into the garage. I NEVER tip, but I can say I paid for his lunch that day, absolute champion
I am so sorry 😦
i ordered a bunch of electronics parts from the netherlands. i do not remember but i think it was with dhl. got delivered on my doorstep less than 24 hours after i paid for my order in the web shop. that was kind of impressive.
Hard to resist, but the name litterly is "ups", probably for a good reason
they may suck, but I've never had an issue with them.
Had a FedEx guy drop off a pallet in our garage, 11/10 (though he used a pallet jack to do it)
I also think DHL is genuinely different in the rest of the world to the US
DHL is awful here for sure.
I had them deliver to the wrong address when I lived in Kirkland all the time.
The lad that drove them out was a contractor that dhl hired iirc, it was oversize and overweight
They would swap the NE to the end of the street instead of before. There is a 120th PL NE and a NE 120th PL.
There are still some good ones about:)
I've honestly had pretty mixed good and bad luck with all of them, not sure who I'd put at the top
Yes, street names in the Seattle metro area are this awful.
Indeed, all of the shippers have the people who care and those who don't and that colors experiences greatly
Want a real laugh? Saint Paul,MN was laid out by a drunken Irishman
https://www.reddit.com/r/usps_complaints/ there's a subreddit on it, i am considering running for mod
-# oh no, what have I done
the way they treat small businesses is ridiculous regardless
@hollow glacier What movie is that meme from?
i give the employees slack individually not usps as a whole
big daddy you heathen
Also, happy customers rarely share that, unhappy customers usually complain!
has anyone ever seen the movie Rubber? Cause THAT"S a movie
I don't know why! It's one of the movies of all time
Still on hold.
Are you sure? Do you have hold music now?
I love how I can call a mom and pop store and get "Would you like us to call you back when you're next in the queue? Press 1" but fucking UPS doesn't have that
I am 100% convinced they make their customer support as frustrating as possible to have people not reach out.
Which results in understaffing.
Which results in longer wait times.
Probably
I also think at one point they outsourced some of their support (primarily for shipping losses) to a 3rd party
I remember when Xbox started phasing out phone support and hid their phone number deep on the support page.
Intentionally hiding it.
Knowing who plays Xbox online, I'd probably hide my phone number too
I had 100% CSAT there for the 2 years I worked there, I am not scared of those shitheads.
hahaha
I can just picture you dishing it right back "Do you want help or do you want me to go back to having sex with your mom?"
"Fuck you I am going to PlayStation."
"That's fine, if that's what you want. I am not here to sell you anything."
and to be fair, so is MS
tbf the end of my time spent in that call center was supporting Games for Windows Live and Media Center.
So, I got very little shitheads calling at that point.
I'm in Germany
But the UK is out
Guys guys guys guys guys
So, almost an hour on hold.
To be told to reach out to the UK offices.
