thows exception to be more correct, found something on Github so the dev may be working on it

#

other than that HA seems pretty nice, automations are intuitive enough things have been fairly solid since I tuned the presence sensors and positioned them, good stuff

#

I begin to see how things could get outta hand with all this gadetry 🙂

deft pewter
#

I can feel this. 2 weeks in at a new house, so it's still dumb.

#

But adding smarts can wait a bit. First, we need to get the heating working 😂

clear ferry
#

I have retired most of my smart bulbs, I had 140 bulbs and sensors in my old house

#

because the new house has downlights in most rooms

#

so I need to buy new stuff

deft pewter
#

Smart bulbs 🤢

clear ferry
#

I controlled all my lights every 5 minutes with circadian lighting 😄

#

I need to get there again, just need to buy 28 zigbee downlights at some point

#

and get motion \ mmwave in most rooms running

#

all doors have sensors already

forest edge
#

downlights use lightbulbs...

#

if you got those all one led pucks.. throw those away and get you so real cans

clear ferry
#

downlights can use GU10, but GU10 models are too big for the ceiling here

#

So I'm going for integrated downlights which are not as tall

forest edge
#

what kind of fucked up downlight is that lol

#

my over the sink fixture uses something like that GU10 and I hate it

#

all my cans use normal bulbs

clear ferry
#

what is your definition of "normal" bulb is probably the question here

forest edge
#

E26 or E27 whichever that base is

clear ferry
#

I've never seen a downlight with E27 in it

solar zealot
#

Atx has a massive warehouse but small ceilings? That's not been on my bingo card

clear ferry
#

that just sounds like a ceiling light from the 80s

clear ferry
#

yeah that's not a downlight

#

LOL

forest edge
#

then what is a downlight in your definition? lol

clear ferry
forest edge
#

that is the same thing

clear ferry
#

no

forest edge
#

how not?

clear ferry
#

whatever you posted is a weird 80s thing

forest edge

cans

#

all words for the same thing

clear ferry
#

yeah, I have only ever seen the ones you posted in bingo halls that haven't been renovated in 30 years

#

This is what has been "downlights" for the last 30+ years

forest edge
#

yea well they are future proof

clear ferry
#

and these are the ones I'm currently looking at, low profile

forest edge
#

that shit you just posted are nightmares

#

even these suck

clear ferry
#

what the heck is that

#

you americans have so weird stuff

forest edge
#

nothing beats being able to use a normal bulb

#

they even make frosted covers for weirdos like you that prefer the look of what you posted while still having a normal bulb behind them lol

clear ferry
#

I see missouri still is stuck in the age of Reagan 😄

forest edge
#

your just a glutten for punishment

#

I've dealt with all styles of cans both this new shit and I hate it. give me classic

#

any day of the week

#

you may as well be using halogen lol

clear ferry
#

Are filament bulbs still allowed over there too then ?

forest edge
#

you never heard of an led normal bulb?

clear ferry
#

sure, I have tons

#

I just wanted to know if you actually evolved in any area

forest edge
#

your just jealous cause you know deep down your fancy new lights will cause you to have to break out a ladder more times then you will ever admit lol

clear ferry
#

only if I buy hue, because boy is hue shit

#

I'll probably go gledopto

#

zigbee brrrrr

forest edge
#

gledopto.. on amazon that brand generally carries that label at the bottom, "frequently returned item"

#

I will say they were much cheaper lol

don't worry, I won't infringe on your new import taxes

smoky inlet
clear ferry
#

most failed hardware I have ever installed, in terms of percentage of failure compared to other brands

#

being overpriced doesn't help

smoky inlet
#

okay, i must be lucky then, i've been using hue for 6~7+ years and have had none fail.

#

primarily bulbs and motion sensors.

clear ferry
#

I have had 6 hue bulbs, 2 have died, looks like my in wall hue button also died now, so far 80+ tradfri bulbs, and 50+ aqara sensors haven't died

smoky inlet
#

i also have experience with gledopto, works well

clear ferry
#

yeah, I have had four gledopto devices, no issues there either

smoky inlet
#

Though the implemented 'execute if off' functionality in the controller doesn't work, so its just there for show.

clear ferry
#

and no issues with wiz either, had two of those

smoky inlet
#

I finally solved an issue i had with home assistant for more than a month now.. my journey started when i switched to an smlight slzb-06m, i started noticing lag when controlling lights. i figured this must be because of the zigbee network being unstable.. weeks of tuning, troubleshooting, different adapters, channels and much much re-pairing. i just didnt understand why it barely happened during the day and mostly laggy at night or early mornings.
installed glances and noticed that refreshing the data sometimes took a while (like 7 seconds) turns out home assistant was intermittently hanging and being unresponsive every x seconds.. an integration was pinging my solar inverter which caused this (which is off at night, obv), such relief when finding this - caused so much frustration.

clear ferry

I'd call that a potato yes

smoky inlet

it has 2 pinned cores and 6gb ram for the vm.

then again, I work on systems with 64TB RAM and 896 cores

I'm outside the norm

that "brrr" is the electricity arcing trying to maintain power

clear ferry

well, electricity is free so

its free here when the sun is shining, otherwise its a tad more expensive than that.

So... I'm suddenly in the need for a new dishwasher. I already have Samsung Smartthings dryer and washing machine. Would you get an offline dishwasher, a Samsung Smartthings dishwasher or a different brand online dishwasher?

I've been happy with the dryer and washing machine but a Samsung dishwasher?? I don't think I've ever seen one IRL.

quasi peak
#

why does every ethernet splitter need additional power?

#

i have only found 1 that doesnt

simple gazelle
#

As in the things that bodge two network connections over one cable by splicing? Or like, a proper hub?

quasi peak
#

like as in this

#

I want to split the ethernet output in my garage. 1 going to the Access point, the other continuing to the fiber converter and out to my secondary structure

#

the ideal is:

night zodiac
#

well you either need a powered switch (poe or other)

#

you can use splitters but in an odd way where you use them on both ends with 2/4 pairs

#

not suggested. I would use a poe switch most likely

quasi peak
#

I currently have POE on the source side

#

but the end side is currently the AP router

#

Im wanting to add the fiber converter

#

hopefully without needing yet another plug in item

night zodiac
#

I would get a poe switch that can do poe out so you can continue to power your ap

quasi peak
#

the AP came with one

#

but i havent needed it because the source has it cause distance >40 feet from termination

night zodiac
#

switch, not injector

quasi peak
#

or something similar at least?

night zodiac
#

it depends on the ideal spot for you to power such but you can get a switch like above but the power goes through the ethernet just like your ap

quasi peak
#

yeah

night zodiac
#

then it can continue the power out of the switch's ethernet and power your ap

#

you need to make sure the poe stuff matches whatever you own though

dawn badge
#

you can get a switch that is powered by poe and can distribute poe to further devices. assuming the inital poe injectio has the power to do so

#

ubiquiti make some smaller ones that do it i think

quasi peak
#

space at the split is kinda limited

#

aditional power is just a new rewire of the technical box

dawn badge
night zodiac
#

I thought your limitation was power. If you can just power a switch then the first one you provided is fine.

shell basalt
#

holy crap these things are real

night zodiac
#

the tp-link one but it's barrel connector not usb or poe

quasi peak
#

its more that adding another powered thing means drywall work

shell basalt
#

I've got 25+ years of networking under my belt, and never have I ever believed an "ethernet splitter" was a real thing .. we would just get a small 4-port switch if we needed to expand port capacity in a location

night zodiac
#

yeah, using a splitter is some crazy use-case that I have never needed. switches are so cheap

dawn badge
#

alot of things labled "splitter" are just switches with strange form factor for people who dont know what they are looking for to buy

shell basalt
#

they're just 3 port switches in a small form factor and using PoE .. I see that.. I just never.. I dunno, maybe i'm just too old school

dawn badge
#

the 2 way splitters to put 2x100m down 1 cable is actually a "splitter"

shell basalt
#

yeah cuz fast ethernet only needs 2 pairs, whereas gig needs all 4 pairs

dawn badge
#

yup

quasi peak
shell basalt
#

well i've been fortunate enough to work for companies that don't allow such chicanery

quasi peak
#

the distance from the splitter to the termination point is less than 1 meter

#

on one port its 3 inches

shell basalt
#

you'd have to split both ends tho

umbral fulcrum
#

is something going on with HA. half my integrations are not loading. failing to initialize

quasi peak
#

how would i have to split both ends?

umbral fulcrum
#

has the most recent update been problematic?

dawn badge
shell basalt
#

Unifi also makes ones that are 4 port switches AND Wireless APs

#

or they used to.. i dunno if they still do.. i have a couple and they're awesome

dawn badge
#

yeah i would look at them, if you buy something cheap and nasty its going to either not work or fail quickly

quasi peak
shell basalt
#

those commie bastards

dawn badge
quasi peak
#

would that TP link switch work or would i need to get a specific POE switch

shell basalt
#

I'll just stand outside MIcrocenter with a bat and deny you entry

quasi peak
#

me?

dawn badge
#

that tplink would work fine if your using the injector. but if you got a switch with poe output you wouldnt have to have the injector

shell basalt
#

sure you too if you use the one in overland park

#

did you not get a 5090?

quasi peak
#

the POE is because its a 100 foot cable from ethernet source to its end and theres signifigant signal drop otherwise

shell basalt
#

nice

#

I still gotta dust off the 10G I got from work .. I know this thing is going to be stupid loud

#

Hey anyone with ESPhome skills know if I set the assumed_state to True in Template Cover, does it assume closed or open?

two ports sounds more like an injector

solar zealot

realistically you should have no issue powering properly sized ones instead

#

especially as those 2ports arent cheap either

stuck anchor
#

given the figure above I would go with a switch with at least 4 2.5Gb ports and a sfp+ cage for future proofing the uplink. can plug in all the 3 needed ports for now and still have at least one spare. and in the future the "ethernet in" can be upgraded to 2.5Gb ethernet on the existing cable or to 10Gb by replacing the cable with dac or fiber. but - yeah - related tech.

#

if that fiber converter has non-firewalled internet i would definitely use managed switches and vlans to isolate it from other networks until reaches a firewall/router though

solar zealot

That probably couldn't be further beyond the scope of something that a two port switch is supposed to cover

There is 1 exception I believe, we are allowed to discourage use of Tuya wifi devices in this channel

But we are such a minor part of their business dealings I have no faith that they will make a new switch

2017 was a refresh

as was 2019

solar zealot

the nv shield?

grizzled gull

yes

I have 2 2015 pro's and 1 2017 and 2 2019 tube ones

solar zealot

oh god

grizzled gull

tube ones suck honestly, I think they get to hot

solar zealot
#

it is really telling how nvidia keeps making trashy chips and sells them for decades

grizzled gull
#

No its telling how far a head of everything else it was that nobody has replaced it yet

solar zealot
#

well yes but they went from "Surface RT" to "Nintendo Switch" in the time i went through school and university

weak musk
#

Which is a great box.

grizzled gull
#

To bad its apple

solar zealot
#

its a bit silly considering there are a lot of arm chips out there which they kinda could just take

#

but they want their 800 series M gpu chips on them i guess ^^

vernal hornet
#

i wonder if consoles will survive. MS threw in the towel, ps5 hardly has exclusives and they get ported to pc, and even stuff that isn't ported like bloodborne are fan ported. nintendo wants to do more movies and media than games now too

solar zealot
#

tbh i dont see why they wouldnt

#

with gpus being more expensive than two consoles

vernal hornet
#

i believe they will all be mobile and pc games

solar zealot
#

i think there may be a very good market for games on standard hardware

#

like gaming is about the experience and not about how good the hardware is at crunching numbers

vernal hornet
#

gpus aren't more expensive than consoles anymore, nintendo has to beat the steam deck and more open hardware

solar zealot
#

im not sure you saw what nvidia put on for price tags for years...

vernal hornet
#

ryzen with the APUs take care of graphics for casual gamers, nintendo has to beat old hardware and new hardware

solar zealot
#

this is something you can argue about a lot. personally i dont see twice or even four times the price being also twice or four times the fun

grizzled gull
#

Honestly my kid's only console is a switch, we have 2 steam decks and 3 gaming computers

plucky sparrow
grizzled gull
#

I'll gladly pay for GPU's that give so much more flexibility

vernal hornet
#

i'd say you can be a hardcore vintage gamer or someone who plays games on hardwarre thye have

solar zealot
#

you can pay for flexibility if thats what you want but wether or not consoles will have a market that kinda doesnt demand flexibility

grizzled gull
#

We travel a lot and I have battery packs for the steam decks, I flew to Paris playing Cyberpunk 2077

vernal hornet
solar zealot
#

this isnt something that just works for a lot of people

vernal hornet
#

a lot of people can't buy older graphics cards?

solar zealot
#

if no one buys new cards there are no old ones people will sell

grizzled gull
#

and I will argue you could build a PC for similar costs for a ps5, b580 and and AMD 6 core chip and 32 gb of ram you wouldn't be far off

solar zealot
#

unless you want actually old stuff at which point the question would be about why even try

intel released a cheap gpu and nvidia has cheaper ones too

solar zealot
#

intel released something most people wont buy

grizzled gull
#

intel needs top release a b770

solar zealot
#

nvidia has basically no cheap models really

#

the 60s series are about the price of a console

clear ferry
#

What do you mean, the H100 is pretty cheap now

#

Only €35k used

solar zealot
#

a beast

grizzled gull

#

The most expensive 5090s here in NZ cost more than I paid for an entire PC with basically top of the line everything back in 2015

solar zealot
grizzled gull
#

Nvidia has basically said price is going to go up everytime if performance goes up 30% so will the costs

solar zealot
#

we dont need to argue about products that exist that arent mainstream in use really. there is no gold to dig

deft pewter
vernal hornet
# solar zealot intel released something most people wont buy

you can say that about all products. the point is that console gaming is dying, MS puts no efforrt into their xbox so its all games on windows, nintendo killed their console so its just a handheld again, and playstation has no moat, they can't even charrrge people to play forrtnite so they are losing money too

grizzled gull
#

Hmm I was going to upgrade to a 5080, but seeing the performance compared to my 7900xtx I don't see a point at all

solar zealot
#

the way console gaming is dying is the same way that pc has been dying since the smartphones came out the first time

dawn badge
#

consoles are in a strange place.
nintendo are not fighting anyone they are doing their own thing
microsoft are not fighting and just want you to have gamepass no matter what hardware you have
sony are still trying to fight everyone in a war that's over

solar zealot
#

just because we repeat this wont make it happen

vernal hornet
#

sony is the only one that still has a console, nintendo even gave up after the wii u

grizzled gull
#

I really want to see what the 9070xt is going to sell for I think AMD got surprised with the nvidia's pricing for the 70 series

solar zealot
#

the people want affordable devices which the market will provide, one way or the other

clear ferry
#

Hey, our switch is docked, it's kinda a console

vernal hornet
solar zealot
#

the good thing we got is that integrated graphics dont suck that much anymore these days
