other than that HA seems pretty nice, automations are intuitive enough things have been fairly solid since I tuned the presence sensors and positioned them, good stuff
I begin to see how things could get outta hand with all this gadetry 🙂
I can feel this. 2 weeks in at a new house, so it's still dumb.
But adding smarts can wait a bit. First, we need to get the heating working 😂
I have retired most of my smart bulbs, I had 140 bulbs and sensors in my old house
because the new house has downlights in most rooms
so I need to buy new stuff
Smart bulbs 🤢
I controlled all my lights every 5 minutes with circadian lighting 😄
I need to get there again, just need to buy 28 zigbee downlights at some point
and get motion \ mmwave in most rooms running
all doors have sensors already
downlights use lightbulbs...
if you got those all one led pucks.. throw those away and get you so real cans
downlights can use GU10, but GU10 models are too big for the ceiling here
So I'm going for integrated downlights which are not as tall
what kind of fucked up downlight is that lol
my over the sink fixture uses something like that GU10 and I hate it
all my cans use normal bulbs
what is your definition of "normal" bulb is probably the question here
E26 or E27 whichever that base is
I've never seen a downlight with E27 in it
Atx has a massive warehouse but small ceilings? That's not been on my bingo card
that just sounds like a ceiling light from the 80s
then what is a downlight in your definition? lol
that is the same thing
no
how not?
whatever you posted is a weird 80s thing
yeah, I have only ever seen the ones you posted in bingo halls that haven't been renovated in 30 years
This is what has been "downlights" for the last 30+ years
yea well they are future proof
and these are the ones I'm currently looking at, low profile
nothing beats being able to use a normal bulb
they even make frosted covers for weirdos like you that prefer the look of what you posted while still having a normal bulb behind them lol
your just a glutten for punishment
I've dealt with all styles of cans both this new shit and I hate it. give me classic
any day of the week
you may as well be using halogen lol
Are filament bulbs still allowed over there too then ?
you never heard of an led normal bulb?
your just jealous cause you know deep down your fancy new lights will cause you to have to break out a ladder more times then you will ever admit lol
only if I buy hue, because boy is hue shit
I'll probably go gledopto
zigbee brrrrr
gledopto.. on amazon that brand generally carries that label at the bottom, "frequently returned item"
I will say they were much cheaper lol
don't worry, I won't infringe on your new import taxes
what is shit about hue? the only thing i can think about is price.
most failed hardware I have ever installed, in terms of percentage of failure compared to other brands
being overpriced doesn't help
okay, i must be lucky then, i've been using hue for 6~7+ years and have had none fail.
primarily bulbs and motion sensors.
I have had 6 hue bulbs, 2 have died, looks like my in wall hue button also died now, so far 80+ tradfri bulbs, and 50+ aqara sensors haven't died
i also have experience with gledopto, works well
yeah, I have had four gledopto devices, no issues there either
Though the implemented 'execute if off' functionality in the controller doesn't work, so its just there for show.
and no issues with wiz either, had two of those
I finally solved an issue i had with home assistant for more than a month now.. my journey started when i switched to an smlight slzb-06m, i started noticing lag when controlling lights. i figured this must be because of the zigbee network being unstable.. weeks of tuning, troubleshooting, different adapters, channels and much much re-pairing. i just didnt understand why it barely happened during the day and mostly laggy at night or early mornings.
installed glances and noticed that refreshing the data sometimes took a while (like 7 seconds) turns out home assistant was intermittently hanging and being unresponsive every x seconds.. an integration was pinging my solar inverter which caused this (which is off at night, obv), such relief when finding this - caused so much frustration.
running home assistant on a potato ?
nope, it is a known issue for this integration (see https://github.com/davidrapan/ha-solarman/issues/344)
but also depends on your definition of a potato
Proxmox vm, here
lel, okay its running on a small proxmox node with 16gb ram and a xeon e3-1265L v3
I'd call that a potato yes
it has 2 pinned cores and 6gb ram for the vm.
What kind of resources does your HA instance have?
No limits on a 24 core system with 384GB RAM enough storage to satisfy a small african country
old system though, but goes brrrr
yeah i dont see that being a good solution for me :P, i do have a HP EliteDesk 800 G5 mini on the way to replace this node though :)
that "brrr" is the electricity arcing trying to maintain power
thats nice
its free here when the sun is shining, otherwise its a tad more expensive than that.
0,2706 per kWh to be exact.
yikes
yep big yikes.
I spend about 4000kwh per month in winter
probably closer to 2500 in summer, not sure yet since this is the first year in new house
Same, i do have plans to get a small portable butane stove.
$0.40 kw/h here
Energy prices are mad these days
Got a bios update yesterday and now it uses like 2w more which I absolutely noticed
Meanwhile germany is closing nuclear power plants becaus coal is great.
Coal is easy
closing? are they outdated?
They are all shut down by now
I mean if you already have it in place..
It's not something you just go pickup some fuel at the gas station to power up again
But that's what happens if you don't invest into your infrastructure for decades
I'm investing in my mesh infrastructure 🙂
It better not be tuya stocks
Or at least I thought I was till I discovered a couple of switches that don't route
I got tuya stuff, cheap but most seems ok so far
im looking forward to shelly gen4 for more zigbee routers.
tuya can destabilize zigbee networks due to spamming
yeah big brain move to support multiple protocols
They also tap into zwave, there may be no reason to buy somewhere else
don't think they are making plugs.. just the pucks
isn't zwave certification very expensive?
They did in the past
At least up to 16A
I mean for zigbee
shelly is making plugs, just not zigbee ones -yet.
Let them cook sono
well maybe they are
https://us.shelly.com/blogs/media-kit/shelly-group-introduces-multiprotocol-connectivity-at-ces-2025
January 6, 2025 - Shelly Group, a global leader in smart home innovation known for its affordable and scalable solutions, is set to redefine home automation and interoperability at CES 2025, unveiling its Gen4 Series - the most advanced iteration of its popular smart home product lineup. Featuring multi-protocol su
for us anyway
rest of you are boned
lol
eu will surely follow :p (copium)
They did make two versions of the x2 display, the eu one doesn't have the ugly speaker bar. does the us market like speaker bars?
that the wall tablet?
ye
i didn't think they made a us version of that
i might be mixing up ces news here though so could be wrong
I would imagine a speaker bar would make playing music sound better
do you really want to play music from your wall panels?
well if you didn't have an intergrated whole house speaker system. it could be an option for some to incorperate one
my godamn farm drive is a damn racoon highway.. driving me nuts being notified of these basards traversing back and forth
racoons would seem intelligent, agile and dexterous == a real pain in the ass 🙂
i guess i am old fashioned that way. when i want music, i want music from a real speaker setup. not from speakers scattered around the rooms at random places. if i want music while moving around i have a perfectly good wireless headset for that.
I have Symfonisk speakers all around the house, plus a few google home minis, plus tvs with integrated chromecast
audio can come wherever it wants
oh we talking about energy prices?
australia should have some of the cheapest energu in the world, but because of the energy industry lobbying and donating to our politicians, it is in the mid-range instead
LNG, Coal, and Oil companies sell Australian resources overseas at cheap
and then australians have to buy it back from overseas at a premium
its kinda fucked
luckily, a lot of households have rooftop solar, so its not too bad
So... I'm suddenly in the need for a new dishwasher. I already have Samsung Smartthings dryer and washing machine. Would you get an offline dishwasher, a Samsung Smartthings dishwasher or a different brand online dishwasher?
I've been happy with the dryer and washing machine but a Samsung dishwasher?? I don't think I've ever seen one IRL.
offline, bc who needs a "smart" dishwasher
also I heard samsung appliance products have a habit of breaking quickly
would recommend bosch or asko for dishwashers
had a samsung dryer, that was fine, and smart home integrated too
I have a bosch accent dishwasher and oven, great and also in HA
getting a new siemens induction top now, will also be integrated
so you can turn on the stove and heat the soup on your approach?
rather for monitoring and notifications than remote usage
I don't leave the house anyway
home office baby

tbh I find having "smart" features packed everywhere a bit ridiculous
lots of stupid smart stuff, but also lots of great stuff
oh right, that's why you ain't charging the Volvo
yes
I need to get an electrician around and install outdoor lighting anyway, so should get him to install a new EV Charger on the wall anyway
will get a polestar eventually
11kW wallbox?
I actually have 400v input here, so I can get 22kw
my old house was only 3 phase 230
huh? 400V is just the 230V phase to phase
yes
a friend just got a miele that is smart. she doesn't do automation yet, but getting there. so it was not bought because of the smart thing. just added bonus.
wasn't it samsung that had a credential leak in their smart washer/dryer in the beginning?
I really like the notification for the Samsung washer. It's much more accurate than measuring power with a plug. But it doesn't have a sensor for the door so I have to use a door sensor.
the miele dishwasher actually opens the door itself at the end of the cycle
most newer dishwashers have done that for 10+ years now
I haven't seen one that didn't
SmartThings show energy (kWh) for my washer and dryer but not power (watt) for some reason. A bit annoying.
i have not had such fancy new stuff 😄
A lot of dishwasher do that now fortunately
neither did her old miele. but i guess that one was 10+ years old.
But I was hoping to avoid a new cloud based integration for ONE product, hehe
I bought 5x sun shades for my upper floor windows and door last year, they were 50% off, and I'm currently integrating them in HA
the difference between vendors there is extreme, first one that came around wanted 35.000 NOK for one window
now I got 4 windows and 1 door for 48.000 NOK
the new shelly pm2 gen4 should hopefully be able to switch the floor heating in my bathroom? no tech specs yet. but they would be a company i would trust for that kind of load... and now that they are finally announcing zigbee versions...
@clear ferry What Siemens did you get? And is the integration solid? I read on the forum some stability issue and I think that was Siemens
I have a 6 year old siemens one, let me check the model
it's always good to shop around. a neighbor just had 5 large window panes replaced. the difference in price between vendors was immense. and the cheapest one also offered to do the whole job at a fraction of the price the others wanted. very nice, polite and efficient guys turned up and did the job in no time.
WMH6W649DN/09 is my washer
I meant dishwasher
That dishwasher was a pricy one it seems
getting one more of those ovens, just in 45cm instead of 60cm
it was half off after christmas, I paid €700 for it
Aye, I'll pull them up, just gotta configure some switches
microsoft just updated the terms and conditions on ms office. by default they can now train their ai on your documents. nice. not. glad i use libreoffice.
i just get the pro+ key and it works ^^
i guess a new gpo will be rolled out by our windows admins to block it within minutes 😄
Huawei Sun 2000 Modbus
Nice. No energy or power?
It's snowing here and they said that school for my son is a 2 hour late start last night and this morning. Except now it's just big fluffy flakes falling - I suspect my son's school day may be cancelled.
Our neighborhood streets are all ice and his school is a block away. 😂
Okay the snow building up on the top frame is actually a really nice touch.
They don't do remote learning for that anymore.
Anyone know if there's a way you can get the last changed value for an attribute of a sensor? Or is it just stored on sensor level?
You can go in to edit the ....shit there's a word for it when you do it..
Sensor options, that's it.
Helpers > tap the one you want to adjust > Settings gear > (my example) Threshold sensor options under the Add Label box.
I know {{ states.media_player.homepod_mini_left.last_changed }} will give me the players last change but it doesn't seem to update when the volume changes.
Huh. Yeah, I dunno. Maybe an #1284966582375813201 question now.
The only thing that American has that I would like here
Well that was more about no school
It's only an issue if you aren't dressed for it :P
My husband slid into one of the curbs on his way to work this morning, broke off part of our bumper and now the side of our battery is exposed.
x.x
Ours are, too, but they don't stop you on ice.
Which is what our roads are.
Ice, not snow.
Lasagna
It's the only cure for Mondays
Yes
School indeed did start only 2 hours late.
My son is excited for recess because he's gonna have a snowball fight.
He'll sleep well tonight.
back in my childhood in the seventies i lived in spain for a while. one morning there was a thin layer of snow outside, so i ran out, collected enough snow for one snowball, ran back inside and threw it at my brother. he could not believe he had just been hit by a snowball. 😄
Surprise sneak attack indoor snowball!
In Spain the snowballs fall mainly on the brother?
There is quite a bit of snow in inland Spain afaik @last cedar
Almost as much as your house? @clear ferry
Probably not
Even near the coast. The Sierra Nevada is snowtopped all year round, iirc, and that's almost on the south coast.
Decent amount of snow there in the winter: https://sierranevada.es/en/invierno/the-station/live/webcams/
We don't get snow here, just occasional marble-size hail
Sounds real good on the steel roof at work
Meh. That's a con.
I'm not disagreeing
It would have been easy to implement
Especially since the app appears to know it, or guess it based on some data
deafening ain't it
It's pretty deafening even when it's just rain
lol yea. i take it your work building has no internal insulation or anything?
Datcentre has ridiculous amounts (but lets face it, that's about sound not getting out).
The office spaces are generally fine, can hear it, not distracting.
Cafeteria is marginal.
The dockway... none whatsoever.
have troubles hearing someone else even talk in the barn during a rainstorm
side of a battery? damn
I am definitely going to gaffer tape the shit out of it, rofl.
spray on conformal coating.. problem solve!

this shit.
Oh yeah, that's awful too
This started right before I left to get my son.
that bush on the left looks like a small buffalo in a ghillie suit
at this point i have either proven myself insane or i have ruined that bush for you
🙂
Well that’s a neighbor’s front yard, they’re meticulous so it’ll probably be kept like that. 😂
Makes me think of a The Shining reboot
I am now not ceratin my house contains zero cats
Edward Scissorhands reboot.
yes, or that
(sees adhesive in mentions for a 3d print..)
Oh.
So if you're printing ABS? Use MEK.
Methyl Ethyl Ketone. It basically temporarily melts ABS just a little bit. So you use it on two printed pieces, stick them together, and they basically chem-weld together.
It's what the lego museums and play spaces use to fuse lego pieces.
Also "Build your own substation" makes me wonder why it doesn't have enough D-rings and..... you know what, nevermind, that's.... something else.
Now that you've built a home fission reactor, add on a personal substation to power your town!
Frequently bought together on Amazon
"I didn't get divorced, I just engaged in a volatile fission reaction."
(welcome to the dumbest joke I tell all day. Maybe. There's still a lot of hours left.)
It’s still snowing. I think this is the snow we were originally promised for this past Saturday. 😂
anyone have any suggestions for an outdoor rated motion sensor?
perferably something that works with alexa as the core (want to interface it with hub and security)
#1284966353798697001 -> Recommendations
I have a smart landscape lighting system. want to setup auto on
Person detection would be best. You can use outdoor PIR for triggers but keeping them on, person would be ideal.
i mean if its like a bracelet or keyfob thing that can be detected at some range that would be perfect
Still 2025, good luck with your search
Frigate
i can always setup exclusion times
If you want a production level outdoor lighting control:
Break beam sensors for perimeter
Door sensors for exit/entry
Outdoor PIR for camera blind spots
Frigate to keep everything in check including speech and bark detection.
Should do everything until you find your wand 😀
im surprised we cant use some way to create a barrier that if a wristband or fob passes over it it transmits
like a shock collar but with more friendly use
they usually work via guidewires underground
Case of DI-Why, again I like your optimism
time to get my combat engineer friends to figure this out
might be a market
hey who doesnt want the proximity detection for barn lights, but without a stupid racoon turning them on
I don't think you really thought this true. 😀 Existing systems are there, tried and tested for years. There are many holes in your human collar logic but I bet you will find them out. Good luck!
ill offer the marines unlimited kegs if they pull it off...
they built me a car for a 48 pack of bud so
I think Bill Gates has this in his house (seriously).
What are you using for break beam sensors? I have some esp time of flight sensors in place (which are sweet) but the downside is they are only effective for around 4 ft.
Yea, the general idea can be implemented with RFID gates.
Available at your trusted installer for business tech thingies
Dakota alert
Thanks!
This might be the first use case for rfid that actually might make sense
so turns out ecobee scrubbed api access. I didn't know that when I bought my thermostat but it's not too late to return it.
What's the most compatible brand now? Preferably I do not want to link it through a cloud account. If I can use it purely local (and possibly also with Homekit) i'll be happy.
Just use HomeKit
As the docs say:
In the meantime, you can use the HomeKit Device integration as a fully functional alternative.
huh, did they not yank legacy users? it seems to be working fine for me still
reads docs
ah
No new users
that's lame
Meh. Local is better
prolly
Definitely
inertia is strongk
yea, I looked at what it would take a while ago. Wanted to track some things essentially by room I have them in.
it's a bit $$$, but there's somewhat normal looking door frames with RFID gates built in
or you could use something less toxic like acetone
Ventilation exists.
.. or just sand shit and use regular superglue.. 🤷♂️
Not as strong of a bond. Also if you're using CA glue in a non-ventilated space, it's just as toxic. So yeah.
if you're using that much CA glue, you have a goddamn problem 😄
solvent welds are piss-poor for actual strength; however. 🙃
They're good enough to permanently fuse the pieces together in museums, my dood.
At least in 3d prints.
Pinning or meshing of parts better..
Seriously, if they're good enough for the Lego folks to use it to fuse parts that children regularly try to break, then they're good enough as far as hold goes.
I’ve used/built solutions around some of the commercial systems and they’ve definitely gotten better and more streamlined over time, but really cost prohibitive at scale for most. Would be interesting to see if it ever becomes viable for private/home use.
this year I’m spinning up so much software that I almost immediately take for granted
proxmox and headscale are “where has this been my whole life” tier
^^
Though I did consider spending a couple hundreds in near~ish range and tracking whether I got everything in my sports bag 😂

are any of you running proxmox in cluster? have they fixed the old problem with a node in the cluster hard crashing and not coming up again (hardware fault)? that node still owned the vm's and you could not restart them on another node, even if you used shared storage. when i prodded proxmox about how to force release the vm's from the node they said it was impossible. i had to delete them and restore from backup. that was 10 years ago and put me off looking any more at proxmox for serious use. i hope it has been fixed by now.
Hm. "Ok Nabu" triggers my Google Assistant devices. That's inconvenient.
Darn, this has ruined my morning
Mine has auto updated 😠
Can't control my blinds with HA using the local API anymore, have to use tahoma app and internet required
updating is nothing but a gamble. something that should only be done if you are already experincing issues, not something you do when everything is currently working as you like
mine auto updated, didn't know it would, never thought to check
now you do lol
You've mentioned both threshold triggers and proximity triggers. For proximity, wouldn't UWB work well? I know some phones are starting to ship with it but otherwise not sure how mature the tech is.
Why is it always crypto scams, why can't we get a good ol classic Nigerian prince scam
someone finally helped him so he doesnt need to reach out anymore
Can't it at least be an OF bot? Then I'd get to look at an attractive lady for a few moments before the hammer falls. Everyone wants money, not sex, capitalism sucks.

I'm so mad
I just be watching top gear and the new episodes started

There goes my soft evening entertainment
New episodes? There haven't been any since 2015.
I think my spouse is over my HA addiction. 4 months in to a rebuild (for a new house).
eventually the stockholm syndrome will solve that
I thought so as well but autoplay switched to something of an alternative reality
What camera doorbell do you use + any subscriptions?
I guess thats a question for everyone
UniFi. Works fine, although you have to buy one of their (somewhat overpriced) NVRs.
There'll be lots of threads in #1284966353798697001 about it though
newbie shame me later, but if you dont mind, what does NVR stand for
do you need the NVR if you don't care about recording? Meaning will live streams work without it?
Only on really old firmware versions, so nothing you can go out and buy today will likely support it directly
You can get an RTSP stream out of the NVR, just not straight from the camera
got it, thanks!
Wife basically got Ring, and I'm in the process of getting HA set up.. got the Ecobee thermostat as the 1st gadget, and wondering what other must products to have?

Also whats a good product to have on your slider door?
yup, already got my Phillips

why does every ethernet splitter need additional power?
i have only found 1 that doesnt
As in the things that bodge two network connections over one cable by splicing? Or like, a proper hub?
like as in this
I want to split the ethernet output in my garage. 1 going to the Access point, the other continuing to the fiber converter and out to my secondary structure
the ideal is:
well you either need a powered switch (poe or other)
you can use splitters but in an odd way where you use them on both ends with 2/4 pairs
not suggested. I would use a poe switch most likely
I currently have POE on the source side
but the end side is currently the AP router
Im wanting to add the fiber converter
hopefully without needing yet another plug in item
I would get a poe switch that can do poe out so you can continue to power your ap
the AP came with one
but i havent needed it because the source has it cause distance >40 feet from termination
switch, not injector
so another one of these? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A128S24
or something similar at least?
it depends on the ideal spot for you to power such but you can get a switch like above but the power goes through the ethernet just like your ap
yeah
then it can continue the power out of the switch's ethernet and power your ap
you need to make sure the poe stuff matches whatever you own though
you can get a switch that is powered by poe and can distribute poe to further devices. assuming the inital poe injectio has the power to do so
ubiquiti make some smaller ones that do it i think
https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Splitter-1000Mbps-0-55inch-Integrally/dp/B0DCMBFKQR/
would this work?
space at the split is kinda limited
aditional power is just a new rewire of the technical box
that looks like an awful device. just the way its labled
I thought your limitation was power. If you can just power a switch then the first one you provided is fine.
holy crap these things are real
the tp-link one but it's barrel connector not usb or poe
its more that adding another powered thing means drywall work
I've got 25+ years of networking under my belt, and never have I ever believed an "ethernet splitter" was a real thing .. we would just get a small 4-port switch if we needed to expand port capacity in a location
yeah, using a splitter is some crazy use-case that I have never needed. switches are so cheap
alot of things labled "splitter" are just switches with strange form factor for people who dont know what they are looking for to buy
they're just 3 port switches in a small form factor and using PoE .. I see that.. I just never.. I dunno, maybe i'm just too old school
the 2 way splitters to put 2x100m down 1 cable is actually a "splitter"
yeah cuz fast ethernet only needs 2 pairs, whereas gig needs all 4 pairs
yup
since i already have the POE on the source side, this might be what i need: https://www.amazon.com/Linovision-Passive-Port-Extender-Splitter/dp/B07HSN5YSK/
well i've been fortunate enough to work for companies that don't allow such chicanery
the distance from the splitter to the termination point is less than 1 meter
on one port its 3 inches
you'd have to split both ends tho
is something going on with HA. half my integrations are not loading. failing to initialize
how would i have to split both ends?
has the most recent update been problematic?
that has a very low power output (says 8w) depending on the AP it may not work
Unifi also makes ones that are 4 port switches AND Wireless APs
or they used to.. i dunno if they still do.. i have a couple and they're awesome
yeah i would look at them, if you buy something cheap and nasty its going to either not work or fail quickly
i mean i can always use the AP's original POE splitter to power the AP.
those commie bastards
then just get a decent switch to wire everything together and put the injector in to power the ap
would that TP link switch work or would i need to get a specific POE switch
this is the current POE i have https://www.amazon.com/BV-Tech-Single-Gigabit-Ethernet-Injector/dp/B005BQUNEG/
I'll just stand outside MIcrocenter with a bat and deny you entry
me?
that tplink would work fine if your using the injector. but if you got a switch with poe output you wouldnt have to have the injector
the POE is because its a 100 foot cable from ethernet source to its end and theres signifigant signal drop otherwise
nice
I still gotta dust off the 10G I got from work .. I know this thing is going to be stupid loud
I need a cabinet rack
i still remember 10-15 years ago "I'd never need 10Gbit at home...."
what? standardard network cable is good for 100 meters. poe is for adding power only
weirdly, when i added the POE the network drop went from 45% to 12%
@quasi peak also we should probably move this to another channel. start something in #1284966617670881350
sure

Suspension of Inbound Parcels from China and Hong Kong
Hey anyone with ESPhome skills know if I set the assumed_state to True in Template Cover, does it assume closed or open?
assumed_state (Optional, boolean): Whether the true state/position of the cover is not known. This will make the Home Assistant frontend show buttons for both OPEN and CLOSE actions, instead of hiding one of them. Defaults to false.
Leopards ate my face moment 😄
Hey anyone with ESPhome skills know if I
it's probably for the best. that stuff just ultimatly disappoints us anyways lol
isn't that just a regular ethernet switch, but with only 2 ports + uplink?
Me seeing people having to buy these splitters when I can just pickup POE+ switches from work
(Also hi im new)
I've gotten sent a few of them, but they're all USB powered. They're basically just super tiny two port switches for.... I mean, I guess they might have a purpose? Maybe? Maybe they're built for stuff like shoving behind a TV that takes a wired connection and a game console that does too if ported into single wall port.
two ports sounds more like an injector
realistically you should have no issue powering properly sized ones instead
especially as those 2ports arent cheap either
given the figure above I would go with a switch with at least 4 2.5Gb ports and a sfp+ cage for future proofing the uplink. can plug in all the 3 needed ports for now and still have at least one spare. and in the future the "ethernet in" can be upgraded to 2.5Gb ethernet on the existing cable or to 10Gb by replacing the cable with dac or fiber. but - yeah - related tech.
if that fiber converter has non-firewalled internet i would definitely use managed switches and vlans to isolate it from other networks until reaches a firewall/router though
That probably couldn't be further beyond the scope of something that a two port switch is supposed to cover
Kind of surprised that I'm not running into any mains powered smart temperature/humidity sensors, it seems like a perfect opportunity to make a device like the way smart plugs work but without interacting with the plug at all (beyond siphoning a teensy tiny bit of energy)
that way they also work as relays and it's easy to get a good mesh in your home if you intend to measure every room
like the form factor of smart plugs I mean
(assuming zigbee or whatever)
Are smart plugs the right place to add these sensors? At least here in the UK, power sockets are almost at floor level, while we position thermostats at something like shoulder/head height.
"TSMC Successfully Collaborates with Suppliers to Create Eco-friendly Hydrofluoric Acid" I don't think HF and eco-friendly should be in the same sentence
I could do with some help with unifiprotect intergration, where can I post for help please? 🙂
I don't think esphome will accept my assumed_state to be Colorado will it
Hmm maybe that's why, though my plugs are not at the floor, I suppose many people's are
I meant specifically with that form factor. I guess you're referring to Ikea's air quality monitor? does too much
It's a bit expensive if you don't value the air quality measurement or the display
Netatmo do them, but you don't want it on the plug, electricity generates heat which will affect temperature and humidity readings.
But also, battery powered devices tend to work for years without needing new batteries.
Yeah but they won't function as zigbee relays, and due to their spread nature, probably will need relays
if you already happen to have those it's fine
4 years on the sonoff pucks it says
although some not so great reviews on their reliability
The Aqara sensors typically get 1-3 years out of batteries
kind of like mayo light? yes, it has 30% less calories than regular mayo. it's still very very fattening
Also like Mayo it's something you never want to consume
i have had lots of problems with the metal parts that connect the button cell batteries on my sonoffs. having to open them 3-4 times a year to bend those parts is a pain
The contacts? Or the things that are meant to push them into the contacts?
mostly the curved metal part that presses on the rim
now the pine store has temporarily stopped all shipments to the us. yay tariffs
Imagine thinking that tariffs punish the sellers 🫠
Btw I might have missed it but if I want recommendations for devices should I ask in #1284966353798697001 ?
@warm helm @tidal bronze
Not just USPS either. I'm sure I saw that DHL have followed suit. It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out.
yes 😐
@forest edge no more Temu for you.
Raining down here as well. Strange.
The stoppage has already been cancelled 😂
you still can! its just going to end differently this time
yeah most of the people you see rammed into the walls and squished under semi trucks and salt trucks thought the same thing
i'll deal with snow, my ass is staying home when its ice
technically i'm suppose to be in the office today
young retirement life
I got a certain bit of anatomy they can kiss if they expect me in the office today
is it somewhere nice?
You have offices?
They're now accepting all shipments from China now
While deciding how to handle the new taxes
Okay im laughing my ass off, Trump tariff taxes actually work
'work' in what sense? If you mean they'll put up prices for consumers, sure they work.
"Inflation will continue to rise until morale improves"
Oh. They're one of those? Cheers
Mod reminder: Politics is out of scope for this server 😉

Of course
I'm a newbie, what time is 2025.2 launching? When it's ready or at a planned time?
I'm pretty sure it's the next 24 hours.
Got it. Thanks.
i step away and come back to seeing a user with the name of "turdburglar"

The only thing that should bring anyone joy in this picture is your keyboard cable
I’ve never been able to type on those either
But a split keyboard is still pretty regular unless they move around the keys or don't have legends
I use a fake split keyboard, Ms sculpt
I had a friend growing up that had cerebral palsy and as a result had limited mobility in one hand. So he used a custom one handed keyboard. THAT really broke my mind.
I don’t know what it is, I can’t touch type on either.
Hi all, not sure what channel to put this on.
I was wondering if, beit via add-on, integration or something else, there is a way to see what other users are currently looking at a dashboard or other part of home assistant
My custom purple and teal cord is awesome.
I agree
#find-support , the "Unsure where to start?" thread is for this kind of questions.
I think though #1284966582375813201 is your spot, and "browser-mod" is your integration. It has the currently displayed URL for each registered browser 🙂
Ah, excellent. Thanks man!
Hello, if I am looking for advice about the home assistant installation best for me for a given list of end goals, would that still go in the installation support channel despite not being an actual issue?
yeah its probably best in there
great, thank you. trying not to have to re-do things.
there is that yeah
lol, but I am hoping whether I keep it on a PI as I have now (barely set up) or run it on the system I have running ollama, whisper and so forth will not change. I am also not sure if running it on a windows pc in a VM is the one called supervised
I have a habit of diving in the deep end, so trying to restrain that, while also making sure my install can do my end goals
chord keyboards were a fad back in the early eighties. 6 keys. one under each finger but two under the thumb iirc. i met a guy at a conference in 1999 who had one one a pull out mechanism strapped to his arm
just was not sure if it would be easier running it on the same computer handling all of the requests for assist/AI
people always seem to have issues running ha on a vm in windows. and also thats not what supervised is.
ideally you want to run haos on dedicated hardware
running it on a seperate system to ollama wont be an issue
yeah keeping it stable is important so bare metal or with a dedicated hypervisor like proxmox
bare metal go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
bare metal usually sounds like KLENGELENG
I boot my primary system once every two weeks for patching, wife has to live with the 7 minute outage
i run ha on a pi 4 connected directly to my router, and from the same power outlet. with access through nabu casa cloud and the ssh add on. it should be up if the router is up and i can get in from the outside and troubleshoot if my other services are down
i try and patch when it doesn't impact others
HA runs on the same system as all my other containers

that is just my prod containers though, I have a couple of dozen more in the labs
i have a vm running docker that only runs things that don't want to run in podman. currently only one container i think
I should find a use for these 1.92TB SSDs though
❯ lsscsi | grep 1920 | wc -l

currently doing nothing
that lives fine in zfs arc

[1:0:43:0] disk SanDisk DDYE1920S5xnNMRI 3P03 /dev/sday
Nice to have 4 letter drive names
I should add another diskshelf soon though, I only have 24x 2.5 slots and 24x 3.5 slots and 16 2.5 internal ones
you kids and your parity
next you are gonna tell me you have cold spares and hot spares
😛
my main sorage array has 4 x 16tb drives in raid6. although it needs upgrading soon as i am running out of space. and the drives are starting to age
A bit beside the current point though, but keep in mind that if you're doing this for integrity and a drive fails, the parity recalculation at SATA/spinning rust speeds can take hours/days, in which time all drives are used to the max, increasing chances a second would fail.
More but smaller HDDs go through this easier than fewer bigger ones.
I'll just let my comment be drive-by trivia for others interested in the subject.
This is one of those xkcd comics, "At my scale"...
"What are you researching?"
"All the ways things can fail..."
My 20 drives ZFS pool takes about 12h to rebuild a failed drive
spinning rust
oh lawd 10GBaseT trancievers, lord have mercy
get that away from me
ok, thanks. sounds like I will leave it on the PI, it is wired directly to my router, and have it communicate with my computer running ollama/whisper/ and such. I do not need HA cloud running it this way, correct?
correct, but something to keep in mind is that you should be using a ssd on the pi, if its using an SD card then it may not last as long as you would like
wow, catching up on the conversation, I am realizing I am not nearly into computers as I used to be
I deploy tens of thousands of switchports per year, I've thankfully only seen about two dozen 10GBase-T Trancievers
ok, that is good to know, I did not know you could use SSD with PI
you will need to get a hat
I deployed some DR4 800 G Trancs the other day, apparently they were 35w per tranc
brrrrrrr
hat? really realizing I might not know enough to do what I want
Doesn't a USB<->SATA cable work good enough though? That's what I used when I was young.
this is why people are moving to mini pc's. its because by the time you buy a pi/hat/case/ssd you might as well use a mini pc
anything is an upgrade from a pi
a pi is a great toy for secondary school for kids to learn coding on
yeah probably fine too to be fair
LOL
so the NUC is just a regular computer that is tiny, and I assume you just install the HA OS onto that instead of windows?
yeah
yes, I finally put one of the dusted down pis to use this year as a mainsailos host
and that is only because I want the printer in my office
that is grat. thank you. Have to go back to doing work (working from home) but I will check back later
the beelink ones are quite popular with either n100 or n150
yes it has klipper, but I still need a frontend
PLA-CF looks really nice and is very strong, def gonna buy more of that
You guys would be proud of me...I've got HAS running on Ubuntu and it's telling me that it's cloudy where I live.
😄 What would be some good thing for me to start with?
I don't know anything yet about wireless controllers, etc...
see what it can see by default and mess with it a bit 🙂
alright....'mess with' sounds 'doable' at least... lol
It has a message saying I have to updated SQLite to 3.40.1....but I've no idea how to do that..if I click on the arrow, it only give me an option to 'ignore.'
what type of install do you have?
although should probably move to #1284966540617449515 if looking to get help on that specifically
I have Ubuntu, and I installed HAS with snap
I think...
It's installed....now wondering what I should do with it.
Front porch light stopped working, worrying that I had a wiring problem, or I'd messed up the relay install... nope, bulb dead after six months. I imagine a 14W LED in a boob fixture in freezing temps probably cooked itself. 😄
the snap install is a "core" install i think. you need to update the stuff yourself
i think this is the first time i have heard of someone installing via snap
I don't know if I did with snap...idk...I just followed the instructions on the website
Point is...it's up and running.....now what would be a good task to start with....that's what I'm wondering about.
and also the message about updating sqlite...no idea what that means.
yes, last command was sudo snap install home-assisant-snap
*t
there are multiple installation types with slightly different feature sets. i dont think a snap install is an officially supported installation type
you may have some strange behavior but i imagine most things should work
Well I want to 'automate' things turning on and off, using temperature sensors, timers, etc...but I don't know even what to get to get started...hw, let alone learning how to make that stuff work.
Is there a 'learning' chat room for newbies?
installing anything with snap is a crime
but hey, ubuntu even installs firefox with snap if you do apt
so screw ubuntu
I'm an angry guy who tell people to fuck off all day thank you very much
and I get paid for it

yeah... i use ubuntu on servers but dont use snap
fair enough
I just tell them they just got put at the end of the list when they do that
I'll get around to you in two weeks
actually my current waitlist is about 3 weeks come think of it
just want to verify, this the one you are talking about? https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-mini-pc-computer-n150/dp/B0CH81C4K3/

that's a reasonable price
you could also get this for $20

even comes with 384GB RAM
and a big power bill
I fucking wish holy shit
I dare you to say that to the faces of the Snap Gods.
drowns in high income area
I used to have 6 of those in my garage, but I moved five of them to the office instead so I can run them 24\7
I always laugh when I read reddit and see people who "work in it in high cost of living areas"
"am I earning enough, I only earn $500k a year doing basic helpdesk"
I used to run a dual xeon 2780v2 server it wasn't THAT bad on power given all it did(3 VM's with dedicated graphics, including 2 gaming machines) I think it idled at like 250-300
My primary system is a DL380 Gen9, it sips about 130w on average with 24\48 c\t
tbf the cost of living is atrocious.
guys...I have no position...I don't even know what's good or bad about anything. I used some instructions to install it...I don't know if it's 'frowned upon,'
but what about eggs!
I love the Intel 0000
Eggs are $9/dozen for me at my Kroger store. Costco is like $7 for 2 dozen.
12900KF ES ^^
yikes, even by our norms that is excessive @lone dagger dozen eggs is about $4, and has been for the last decade
thank you
When you need 20 E14 lamps
Yeah but in general I would love like a 5$ a pop bulb
Spent 20k$ upgrading my house windows
I bought at least half of mye tradfri bulbs at $3-4 each, just stopped by the local ikea once a week and went to the returns
My new house has mostly downlights, so I'm doing zigbee downlights and zigbee buttons
I have a box of tradfri laying around from my old house
used to have 80 bulbs
😮
I got 20 bulbs E27 Tuya wifi ones from a friend
With some sensors
- one thermostat
also got 8 Yeelight ones RGB
Everything is E27 so maybe I should just convert my lamps to E27 sockets instead 🤣
tuya... your about to find out why they gave them away. and maybe realise they are not such a good friend...
Been working fine for 3months

until they don’t 😂
Separate Vlan and everything
if it works for you then thats all that matters 🙂
His own designed bulbs n everything
So im just a beta tester
But yeah im just wondering what to get
13600k
my 83 watts is with transcoding take place with the igpu

Yeah I have a A380 in there
I dont even transcode on the server
I let peoples units handle that
Straight file send
For what i do the 13600k is great, the whole machine spun down idles at 50 watts
it runs 21 containers, I would have done something less powerful but I wanted teh single core speeds for modded minecraft servers
did you apply the bios patches?
yes unfortunately
13600k wasn't affect as much as the i7's it has a lower power envelope
This is new a new cheap CPU from black friday thats always had upto date bios
Do you want me to talk about the water cooled HPC systems I've been installing for 18 years?
-# pst. We do have #the-workshop.
We made a joke missy
Calm down

you could be sending some of those our way

That's why I used the markdown. 😛
When the system has 2x 450w CPUs brrrrrr
Is this just a general chat channel?
Yes
The name is so misleading 😂
Your face is misleading
......
True, but it's not online
The description is pretty clear, though.
There’s no support here - only chill. Come in, grab a drink, chat with your fellow community members! This is a space to talk to other smart home enthusiasts. If you’re looking for support and unsure where to go, check out find-a-channel - it should help you find where you are going. No politics, religion, or any other obviously contentious topics! Please ensure you've read the Code of Conduct (https://www.home-assistant.io/code_of_conduct/), and rules.
There is 1 exception I believe, we are allowed to discourage use of Tuya wifi devices in this channel
Is that other smart home enthusiasts or smart home enthusiasts??????????
Thankfully watercoolers is mostly a us thing, but we've seen the concept
Yes.
Yes, but when looking through the channel list, you have to get that idea. And no, I never worked in the office. And in my country, there are no water cooler. The tap water is fresh, clean and cold enough 😅
Oh no the one exception is that only Mental Health Support is allowed.
It's in the community section, not the support section.

I can give some mental health support, but no mental health support
Your face is the community section
Are you just doing what I said I wasn't doing yesterday. 🤣
-# yes, I’ve been doing it here and IRL constantly since yesterday
meet the medic
I do get it now. I just wanted to say, I had trouble finding it (so likely others will too).
arguably it is titled support
ohhhh should I bring up the percentage of non neurotypical folks in here 😛
I look away 1 second
all of them
You mean 0%?

Well obviously
we're all mad here
Is the 2024.2 delayed or is there a change in release cycle?
We haven't even done the live stream yet!
its a whole year behind!
hahaha
come on 25.2 hurry
switchbot to refresh system updates
Update to the beta if you're in a hurry 🙂
haven't read the notes, whats the change? I know my switchbot is super slow to wake up,but I figure thats just the nature of the beast, I use it to turn on a UST projector
ah yeah, I found the release party, starts in 45min https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rflpsHsEE5s
Home Assistant 2025.2 is launching, so it's time to party. Join our live stream and discuss the new features with some of the dev team.
time to get pre stream drunk at missy
Watching the https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/427516175237382144 channel gives a good idea on when things are published.
button has been pushed
we need some meows
Gonna show of shiny stickers. And never meow.
my shield turns it off just fine, but I have a specific order I start stuff up with because if I don't the wrong input gets selected 50% of the tiume
You know what i want more then anything.... a shield 2025 or 26
I know
missy just ruined my investment into ordering fourteen hundred dollars worth of bingo cards
But we are such a minor part of their business dealings I have no faith that they will make a new switch
If they charged 250 a pop for them they''d make 750 dollars instantly from me
All the android TV boxes suck compared to a 10 year piece of hardware...
nope
2017 was a refresh
as was 2019
the nv shield?
oh god
tube ones suck honestly, I think they get to hot
it is really telling how nvidia keeps making trashy chips and sells them for decades
No its telling how far a head of everything else it was that nobody has replaced it yet
well yes but they went from "Surface RT" to "Nintendo Switch" in the time i went through school and university
Which is a great box.
To bad its apple
its a bit silly considering there are a lot of arm chips out there which they kinda could just take
but they want their 800 series M gpu chips on them i guess ^^
i wonder if consoles will survive. MS threw in the towel, ps5 hardly has exclusives and they get ported to pc, and even stuff that isn't ported like bloodborne are fan ported. nintendo wants to do more movies and media than games now too
i believe they will all be mobile and pc games
i think there may be a very good market for games on standard hardware
like gaming is about the experience and not about how good the hardware is at crunching numbers
gpus aren't more expensive than consoles anymore, nintendo has to beat the steam deck and more open hardware
im not sure you saw what nvidia put on for price tags for years...
ryzen with the APUs take care of graphics for casual gamers, nintendo has to beat old hardware and new hardware
this is something you can argue about a lot. personally i dont see twice or even four times the price being also twice or four times the fun
Honestly my kid's only console is a switch, we have 2 steam decks and 3 gaming computers
6 days after Nvidia released a 2000$ and a 1000$ card 😂 and the last gen didn't even get cheaper too
I'll gladly pay for GPU's that give so much more flexibility
i'd say you can be a hardcore vintage gamer or someone who plays games on hardwarre thye have
you can pay for flexibility if thats what you want but wether or not consoles will have a market that kinda doesnt demand flexibility
We travel a lot and I have battery packs for the steam decks, I flew to Paris playing Cyberpunk 2077
if you can't buy old graphics cards and MUST buy the new one
who is buying the to be old stock for the future?
this isnt something that just works for a lot of people
a lot of people can't buy older graphics cards?
if no one buys new cards there are no old ones people will sell
and I will argue you could build a PC for similar costs for a ps5, b580 and and AMD 6 core chip and 32 gb of ram you wouldn't be far off
unless you want actually old stuff at which point the question would be about why even try
yeah way cheaper ones are still better than console. It was just about the quote in general 😅
Given how small it sounds like the available stock was at the 5xxx launch, probably be a while before the 'ol trickle-down starts to take effect
intel released a cheap gpu and nvidia has cheaper ones too
intel released something most people wont buy
intel needs top release a b770
nvidia has basically no cheap models really
the 60s series are about the price of a console
a beast
Says who? do you know what the most popular GPU on steam is? Its like a 3060
The most expensive 5090s here in NZ cost more than I paid for an entire PC with basically top of the line everything back in 2015
says the market who isnt even mentioning intel existing at the current time
Nvidia has basically said price is going to go up everytime if performance goes up 30% so will the costs
we dont need to argue about products that exist that arent mainstream in use really. there is no gold to dig
And, this year, prices go up even when performance doesn't 🤣
you can say that about all products. the point is that console gaming is dying, MS puts no efforrt into their xbox so its all games on windows, nintendo killed their console so its just a handheld again, and playstation has no moat, they can't even charrrge people to play forrtnite so they are losing money too
Hmm I was going to upgrade to a 5080, but seeing the performance compared to my 7900xtx I don't see a point at all
the way console gaming is dying is the same way that pc has been dying since the smartphones came out the first time
consoles are in a strange place.
nintendo are not fighting anyone they are doing their own thing
microsoft are not fighting and just want you to have gamepass no matter what hardware you have
sony are still trying to fight everyone in a war that's over
just because we repeat this wont make it happen
sony is the only one that still has a console, nintendo even gave up after the wii u
I really want to see what the 9070xt is going to sell for I think AMD got surprised with the nvidia's pricing for the 70 series
the people want affordable devices which the market will provide, one way or the other
Hey, our switch is docked, it's kinda a console
the hackable switch reminds me of the psp, from the capabilities of emulation to the video out
the good thing we got is that integrated graphics dont suck that much anymore these days
