I use the sun elevation for a couple of things; have infrared floodlights to help the security cameras which go on at -3 degrees elevation (experimentally detemined to be "dark enough")

Hello,

Just got the home assistant green and am enjoying it a lot!

I am in the process of setting up actions for all my hue switches (on, dim up, dim down, off) and am wondering if there is any simple way to put all triggers and actions in the same automation (per switch)?

They are all tightly related since they are triggered by the same device and will control the same lights.

Also, I believe this will simplify eventual future copies for the other switches for the other rooms.

I am very new to HA, so this is probably some newbie questions 😄

mint summit
#

quick question for the people with a lot of IoT and automations: how do you feel comfortable using IoT in mission critical places in your house like door locks and garage doors, even with the threat of a vulnerability coming along making it extremely easy to bypass. Even the most reputable IoT companies can have huge gaping vulnerabilities that would have been found with even a basic pentest (cough cough looking at you simplisafe), and manufacturers will often put convenience over security. As the saying goes, "The s in IoT stands for security". Just looking for thoughts

#

to add to the conversation, this was one person's perspective online: "For me, the risk of physical keys being lost is far more likely than the overlap in the Venn diagram of domestic burglars with corporate-grade IT penetration skills. "

dawn badge
#

i dont currently use smart door locks. but from what i have seen alot of the time the weakest part of the security is the backup lock cylinder. company spends loads on electronics then puts the cheapest cylinder they can find on the backup.

for now: phyical lock bypass attacks are probably more common than electronic bypass attacks

solar zealot
#

considering how insecure the principles of a "lock" are in general, its not really and up or downgrade to have this more smart

Well that's a fun idea. I actually have a bunch that I use with OpenEpaperLink project. I don't have that many spares though. And these are running on batteries connected wirelessly to a hub, which isn't really needed for this use case. Did you think of a specific eink display?

midnight adder
# mint summit quick question for the people with a lot of IoT and automations: how do you feel...

I think best security practices start with the person, for instance the Apple iCloud leak, this was bad security practices by the user, the ring problem with people hacking into them this was people reusing passwords across different websites, people need to be more self aware of basic security I.e not reusing passwords and 2fa, this would stop majority of attacks, I also aware there is devices out there that make it easier to hack smart things(flipper zero) or even someone making there own device, so companies have major responsibility in keeping there servers up to date and treating there security more serious.

#

But like people have said up here they just use a brick if they really want in anyway

#

That’s my ten cents 🙂

i have looked inside a yale doorman, and it seemed to do things right. keypad, rfid reader and auxiliary power from the outdoor part go to a board on the inside. no way to get access to the wires that power the motor from the outside even if you smash off the whole outdoor cover.

mint summit

also another weird thing: I just enabled proxmox firewall now, and I can access everything fine, except portainer

#

a few other people have also had the same issue

what is going on

ocean oar

mint summit
ocean oar
#

Computers are supposed to be deterministic, damnit!

mint summit
#

damnit it was IPtables/nftables shenanigans

#

to hell with this I'm deleting all firewalls on my IoT box and moving that stuff to proxmox (which I probably should have done from the beginning)

#

this is such goofiness

austere anchor
#

I just do all firewalls on my router. Too much trouble to debug when there are three places doing the same thing.

mint summit
#

did some more research and found out that by default, docker doesn't allow bridges to be accessed from outside the host

#

people were saying that for these kinds of tasks, a person should use host networking

#

weird because custom bridges don't work, but docker's default bridge does work

#

when creating the bridge, docker does the rules correctly, however, when I restart, those temporary rules get flushed, and docker goes back to its normal rules

#

after docker starts, setting an iptables rule to accept all forward makes it work fine. However, if it is created beforehand, that rule will be overridden

#

according to the docs, Docker should automatically be adding iptables rules for my custom bridge. However, it is not, or at least, not correctly

#

if ports are mapped for a bridged container, those ports are only accessible from the host, not outside the host

#

I've checked the rules that docker adds for iptables, and it only adds forwarding rules for the default "docker0" bridge.

#

hmmm

#

docker with its iptables-nft by default updates the ip table, instead of the inet table

#

I think that is the main problem right now

#

I deleted nftables, but I kept iptables-nft. I wonder how that will change things

#

bridged containers from outside host are still broken

#

why is this even happening

#

everything was working perfectly fine until last night/this morning

#

I have come to the realisation that I have no clue what is happening, and that enabling forwarding for everything in iptables-nft fixes it

mint summit
#

huh

#

stopped being able to access portainer on the default network as well after adding nginx and mqtt to that network

mint summit
#

I attached a bandaid to make it work by enabling ufw again and putting a routing rule between the LAN interface and the docker bridge interface

#

holy shit I just wasted 4 hours

last cedar
last cedar
austere jay
#

Anyone has smlight tech products here? Apparently the SLZB-06* group of products will be able to work as a hub, meaning no need of z2m and mqtt anymore to add devices and link to HA. But this means that the hub needs to be supported directly by the integration I guess? I have so many questions 😄

clear ferry
mint summit
clear ferry
#

Said every ufw user

mint summit
#

everyday I question why I didn't use podman for my IoT setup

clear ferry
#

Yeah, any host I run docker on will have ufw disabled

mint summit
#

and messing up my entire day

#

after upgrading to docker version 27.3.1-r1

#

on alpine linux

#

oh the irony:
"Fix an issue that prevented communication between containers on an IPv4 bridge network when running with --iptables=false, --ip6tables=true (the default), a firewall with a DROP rule for forwarded packets on hosts where the br_netfilter kernel module was not normally loaded"

#

looks like the issue occasionally pops up on the default bridge for some reason as well

#

so I put a firewall rule for forwarding to be allowed there as well, and that patched that up

Anyone know where I can find the config files related to integrations?

a friend of mine had her pc fried by a lightning strike in the broadband network back when they used coax. fried the tv box, the router, the surge protector and the pc. luckily she had bought the surge protector (with rj45 passtrough to protect the ethernet as well) from the insurance company, so no problem getting it covered.

i don't know how common it is, but in norway we do not have a neutral and a live on the mains power. they are usually just two phases of a 3 phase feed, and as such they are both live compared to ground. that means a lot of imported surge protectors have no effect, as they are designed for one line to be neutral.

deft pewter
#

Interesting. We don't have much 3-phase in the UK.

stuck anchor
#

it is not uncommon here to have 3-phase into homes. and even when you don't have what you get is 2 phases from the 3 phase out in the street.

kind falcon
#

Iirc norway is famous for that

stuck anchor
#

power has been cheap until we got hooked up to the european grid. now our prices are controlled by the hourly rates at nordpool

#

our power is also near 100% "clean"

kind falcon
#

unlike germany 😛

#

Close nuclear power facilities > run on coal when the sun doesnt shine. Absolutely genius

stuck anchor
#

germany is getting renewable at a high pace, isn't it? but there is a lot to cover...

#

and closing nuclear was perhaps not a wise choice

kind falcon
#

The kwh prices went through the roof last months when the sun didnt shine and there was no wind

#

Like parabolic

stuck anchor
#

there is a lot of talk about setting up one of those small nuclear "all-in-one" power stations in norway. the politicians are not saying yes yet, but some planning is being done.

kind falcon
#

Yea those are great

stuck anchor
kind falcon
#

I like the modular idea, just add bricks for more power.

stuck anchor
#

and you can set up n+1 for redundancy

kind falcon
#

Too bad nuclear power got such a bad rep. We could have been producing so much energy that no one has a clue what to do with it.

#

In a weird way the 'green' people caused global warming

stuck anchor
#

this is just the tail end of it. it started with the industrial revolution. you can clearly see the earths temps start climbing from then

deft pewter
kind falcon
#

No I mean that if we went full nuclear a couple of decades ago it might just be that we would hardly use fossil fuels in the present.

deft pewter
#

Yes. More nuclear please.

stuck anchor
#

i'm thinking that when i renovate my west wall i want to check with the power company if they can just install 3 phase into the house and hook 2 phases to the existing setup. just let the third cable be ready for when i get the internal wiring redone.

kind falcon
#

There was just too much political pressure from the same group that is now full on banning fossil fuels. I hold them in part responsible for the mess we are in now.

stuck anchor
kind falcon
#

Well if you have plenty of power you can easily store it in hydrogen.

stuck anchor
#

hydrogen has a tendency to go boom, though...

kind falcon
#

If a plane crashes it doest matter anyway 😛

stuck anchor
#

may not be deemed safe enough for aircraft for a while still

deft pewter
#

Nuclear -> electricity -> hydrolysis -> burn hydrogen?

stuck anchor
#

there are two competing companies in the uk who both have technologies to create fuel from co2 in the air and sunlight. but they are both kind of struggling with scaling the production to a level where it can be sold. that would be co2 neutral gas for your existing engines.

kind falcon
#

It costs a sh*tton of electricity but nuclear and perhaps fusion can do that. I like having solar panels so I don't pay for my fridge in the summer but it is not going to propel us into the future. If anything we need WAY more energy for the next century.

stuck anchor
#

and those suggestions about harvesting energy in space using big solar panels and pumping it down to earth... the laws of thermodynamics would make it clear that that will not fix the heating problem 😄 if anything we need to leak more heat out into space.

kind falcon
#

I can only imagine the world we would be living in. Image industrial processes at a mere fraction of the current price

kind falcon

https://www.youtube.com/@isaacarthurSFIA/videos This guy has some fantastic and totally insane ideas about what the laws of physics would allow us to do. Mirrors in space for example. Farming stars etc.

even a tesla needs some oil/grease for lubricating moving parts, so it's hard to see us shutting down oil production completely.

Synthetic oil works. We don't need to keep extracting crude oil.

solar zealot
#

That's what people want you to believe that oil is needed for maintenance

#

This post was brought to you buy manufacturing industries

kind falcon

If that would be all the oil we need we could go for 1000s of years.

deft pewter
stuck anchor
#

agree. we would still need a little.

deft pewter

I only used synthetic with my last ICE car

Doing my (small) part 😄

kind falcon

Plastics however bad at time are amazing materials and are critical for many different things.

solar zealot
#

Only oil allowed is for belts in oil baths

stuck anchor
#

and while synthetic oils can be made more eco friendly than mineral oil the reality is that they usually contain a lot of additives that are really bad for the ecosystem

primal laurel
#

using electricity to do work will always be more efficient anyway. That's you you get the primary energy consumption down, electrify everything. Take heating for example, a boiler outputs about 1 kWh of heat for every 1 unit of gas put in (in kWh). A heat pump will do 3-4 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh electrical input

solar zealot
#

Would require investment into infrastructure that costs more than 0$

Someone think about the children profits

the problem with electricity is efficient storage that is also ecological. hydro power can be produced on demand. not so with wind and solar

primal laurel
#

That's why we're building a lot of grid level storage. In NL we have no options to build hydro plants

stuck anchor
#

batteries are still terribly inefficient and messy to produce. we will get there though

primal laurel
#

Inefficient? In what way

stuck anchor
#

i'm thinking that in norway it would be interesting to use surplus energy to pump water back up to the dams.

stuck anchor

What technology can beat 92%?

stuck anchor

yes they fix a lot of the problems but production is still ramping up. a few critical problems also seem to have fixes now
