airtags require a phone to be nearby, right?

static schooner
#

there are pretty much always phones nearby

but yes, they rely on the vast network of iDevices

dawn badge

the biggest thing airtags did is they reduced the barrier of entry to put a tracker on someone

i used a gps pet tracker on one dog who had a tendency to wander off. lots of places to go here with no phones nearby.

you have to dedicate an i<device> like an iphone to act as the gateway tween the tracker and haos last I checkled..?
You'll need an Apple device (iPhone/iPad) to set up and sync the trackers (at least at the beginning) . This device must be always online as it will be the one sending location information to Home Assistant.
That seems like a big ask and also a very fragile point of failure ¯_(ツ)_/¯

dawn badge

you can get a BT beacon and use esppressence to track location within house but wouldnt work if it gets out

ember heart
#

as for "pick up devices cheap" thats not as big an issue as the fragility.. all it takes is one security update from apple to make it go "poof".. not willing to invest the time to risk it all come tumbling down if they decide to close a door in their walled garden

Its a "DeskPET" - a little desktop device modeled on the Commodore PET computer. Uses a BME680 for temp/hum/pres/air qual and has neopixels and an oled + 3 buttons. Can control stuff or just tell u stuff. its fun. I think I put a thing in Show Off here a while back...

I still don’t know what it’s for is it a sensor that tells you to get out of bed?

ember heart

bed occupancy so u can make automations for when you are or are not in bed

dawn badge
ember heart

Example:
if bed occupancy on my side of the bed goes from ON to OFF and its after midnight, then turn on my nightstand lamp at %5 brightness & turn on the light in the bathroom at %5 so I can see my way to the bathroom

That’s so good

thats where I have LD2410b unit mounted

ember heart

word of caution- don't use home brew things to monitor life or death (or serious health) related things.. u make a mistake on an automation that is supposed to turn off a light, no big deal.. u make a mistake on an automation to remind u to take life sustaining medication well...

brings a whole new meaning to "kill process" O.O

dawn badge
#

yeah use it in addition to but not in replacement of

ember heart
#

I only know of one situation where a software bug killed someone. it was bad. 😦
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therac-25

The Therac-25 is a computer-controlled radiation therapy machine produced by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) in 1982 after the Therac-6 and Therac-20 units (the earlier units had been produced in partnership with Compagnie générale de radiologie (CGR) of France).
The Therac-25 was involved in at least six accidents between 1985 and 1987, ...

dawn badge
#

i saw a post somewhere about someone who had an automation if levels got so bad they may need help. it texted people to come help and unlocked the door

ember heart
#
it sometimes gave its patients radiation doses that were hundreds of times greater than normal, resulting in death or serious injury.[3] These accidents highlighted the dangers of software control of safety-critical systems.```

I would never take my libra off i just don’t know about the data libre are gathering

#

But I might just have to have the trade off

#

It would be serious if it didn’t work

#

Or was wrong

ember heart
#

one reason I would be reluctant to integrate it is that I wouldnt want an overly chatty automation make people stop paying attention or an overly nojn-chaty one make people think everything was ok because no alerts mean its fine- it can go wrong in too many ways.. I would only want to rely on the official meidcally approved software and alerting systems .. just my opin though ¯_(ツ)_/¯

midnight adder
#

Think you guys are the experts and you all saying careful so I think I will listen

iron granite
#

There is also an integration for Carelink. But that is depending on the cloud twice - for upload from the insulin pump/glucose sensor to the cloud and for integrating the cloud to HA. It's nice to have, but I wouldn't rely on it or trust it fully.

ember heart
#

👍🙂

#

we are all experts in making things that don't work the way we expected or automations that fail in surprising fashions 😄

midnight adder

Yes there a mod for libre to make it into a pump but I ain’t for that rather just inject

midnight adder

ember heart
#

again- not to belabor the point- but home assistant is designed for hobbyists to play with and make fun automations that are useful and helpful- I would NOT use it for something that could impact my health... its just not that kind of platform.. you'll also hear folks say don't use it for a commericla business or product.. its not well suited to that use..

#

its not "mission critical" level device

midnight adder
#

I use it because it’s local and I can control my data better 🙂 don’t like big tech having it, also I do like to play with iot stuff

ember heart
#

as an example, I still have my hard-wired UL approved smoke detectors.. in ADDITION to my HAOS monitored ones 🙂

midnight adder
ember heart
#

I also keep a physical key on my keyring to unlock my door if the zigbee is not working

iron granite
#

But there is a reason, why all the sensor or pump related software has to be approved.

stuck anchor
#

instead of bed sensors i use an app called sleep cycle that monitors my sleep using the mic. and the alam time set in the app comes up as next alarm for my phone in ha and can be used to ramp up the lights 30 min before wake up time

midnight adder
#

Like me I have a security key yubikey in my safe just in case 🙂

ember heart
#

I could see using it to keep track of how often it is using up its battery to help forcast when you would need to buy more batteries.. or maybe use it to add up its values over time to help predict when you have to buy other supplies.. but thats about the edge of where I would go with medical related

lone dagger
#

For example, some people might like being able to show the graph of their glucose levels.

#

But you shouldn't rely on it for running medical devices.

dawn badge
#

yeah for historical stat tracking it could be awesome but not depended on for "inject now"

ember heart

I have 2x yubikeys.. one on my keyring and one on my wifes keyring. we can both unlock the lastpass vault. I plan to move to valutwarden as soon as I can finish getting it setup.. I have till june of this year (thats when my yearly lastpass renewal comes up)

the drives houd be around 30° C mostly when running.. a tad lower is even better

Ohh good 🙂

ember heart

unborn merlin

toasty - some guys came in to repair the ac in our server room. afraid to spill water on the rack beneath they wrapped the whole isle in plastic wrap... didn't take long before servers started shutting down

ember heart

my 24 bay primary server shows curently averag across all spining drives is right at 30° C

midnight adder
#

That’s good then 🙂

ember heart

lowest temp in the array is 27° C higest is 33° C

desert cave

Backblaze actually now includes drive reliability stats for drives that are run hotter than recommended :D

midnight adder
#

Ohhh handy

unborn merlin
#

so what I'm saying is HDD"s are like what vivek said about american workers. /s

#

😛

ember heart
#

yeah hotter running is bad for mechanical bearings and with finite lubricant that tends to get thicker as they dry out due to heat- it can really imapct drive life

midnight adder
ember heart
#

I also use "spin down" which is controversial- but it keeps the overall tempertaures in the system down.. plus a lot of my drives don't really need to spin often

stuck anchor
#

spinning up drives with a hairdryer - ✅

midnight adder
ember heart
#

spin down is when u tell the drive to stop its spinning motor and the platters stop sppinning. it is usually done as power saving for when the drive is not needed.. so u set a timer sorta like the timer on a screen saver- It makes it to the drive will spin down if not accessed for like - 30 minutes

desert cave
unborn merlin
midnight adder
unborn merlin
#

new datacenters at this point should all be using fucking ground-sourced heatpumps.

ember heart
#

itgs controversial since the spin up is hard on the drive too.. there's debate on if spin down/up is harder on the drive than running 24x7 and keeping the drive cooler..

midnight adder
unborn merlin
#

Actual reason: we really enjoy having indentured workers who will take abuse to stay here.

midnight adder
#

I get you thank you @ember heart

dawn badge
ember heart
#

essnetially in-rush current when the drive is introduced to power again after spinning down creates electrical surge and mechnical shock to the drive.. ot some extent... but its not a settled debate..

unborn merlin
#

whereas ground source heat pumps..

dawn badge
unborn merlin
#

the earth is a giant thermal mass that will never care about how much you dump into the ground.

midnight adder
unborn merlin
#

yeah; well just build it well and you can still service well-enough and have backups.. 😄

unborn merlin
midnight adder
#

Ahhh

#

So in time we will know the answer

ember heart
#

I recall reading (on reddit I think) of a guy thaty poured a small concreete pad outside his house for his BBQ patio and he put a zig-zag of copper pipe serpentine in place before he poured the concrete then used that instead of a radiator for his server rack. He had a rack in the garage and the patio he was pouring was on the other side of the wall from the server..

dawn badge
#

linus put pipes under his swimming pool i think i saw at one point

midnight adder
#

I seen him before on YouTube

ember heart
# midnight adder Can they not do tests and settle it?

not only does it take time, but the type of bearings and the lubricant and the type of circuit used to send power to the drive motor all play a role in evaluating this. it would be very hard to get "apple to apples" type comparisons...

unborn merlin
#

yeah, he did

dawn badge
unborn merlin
#

which is Close to a ground source heat pump

#

except he's just dumping the heat into the thermal mass of the pool instead.

midnight adder
unborn merlin
#

I think he also has a loop through his solar panels too

#

panels cooler -> more efficient -> etc

dawn badge
#

i would love to bury pipes outside to use as a cooling solution but its alot of work

shell basalt
#

I, too, like laying pipe

unborn merlin
#

yeah, you either have to dig a horizontal trench at least 6~ or so feet below and do the pipes

ember heart
#

bleh.. my 2nd unraid server is doing a parity sync right now so 18x drives all being constantly rad at one time has pushed my array temps up to average 43° C at the moment 😦

midnight adder
#

Put your server in a cave in the artic

unborn merlin
#

or you drill boreholes like 50-200m deep.

I don't really get the whole "datacenters using a shit ton of water" thing either

desert cave

namely, it's water cooled, and is on a barge

unborn merlin
#

I get it requiring a startup cost of water

#

but why the fuck is it not closed loop?

dawn badge
#

build at a river and you dont need a closed loop

desert cave
#

other than a really old IBM datacenter, I don't know of any that aren't closed loop (the barge one uses river water, but that goes through a heat exchanger to a closed loop within)

stuck anchor
#

that server room that got the plastic wrap had the cooling hooked to the citys water heating loop fed by garbage disposal. feeding heat out to the loop

midnight adder
#

I really really want to build a water cooled pc

#

But I would break it I think

desert cave
#

it's really not, haha

unborn merlin
#

involving river or salt water in any way is a bad idea in my opinion.. 😄

desert cave
#

well.. okay, if the river has enough flow, and it doesn't regularly hit 120f/49c in summer, then yeah it could work

unborn merlin
#

contaiminants in water.. is how you get things corroding and etc..

dawn badge

honestly water cooling for desktop is pretty pointless these days unless you have a specific purpose for doing it

unborn merlin

yep.

#

hell, the 5090 and 5080 are two slot cardsbecause they've just got such high efficiency on the coolers now.

stuck anchor
#

i have aio cooler on my cpu as well as gpu that came with its own. it is very quiet

dawn badge
#

if you go AIO performence is compariable to good air cooling and if you go custom the maintaniance is chaos

midnight adder
#

Ohh so you can’t just leave it?

dawn badge
#

i do currently have an aio on my cpu but i wont bother on my next one ill just use a decent air cooler

unborn merlin
#

nope.. 🤷‍♂️

midnight adder
#

What maintence is there?

unborn merlin
#

most tubing/systems do have some slow evaporation issues and etc.. you will have to do maintenance eventually

midnight adder

Ohh

unborn merlin

AIO also has those issues but a lot slower ebcause they use different tubing usually

#

a lot of people do custom watercooling for aesthetics too.

stuck anchor

I created a post in the installation section. I hope I did it correctly. I'm not super familiar with discord.

Am hoping to be out of Apple soon

midnight adder
#

But then who to go to all companies are as bad

stuck anchor
#

that's when you run linux...

midnight adder
#

They got Ubuntu touch but don’t run on many phones

#

I need to make my own phone with my own os

dawn badge
#

you can degoogle android

midnight adder
#

With custom roms

unborn merlin
#

you buy a pixel and run AOSP or w/e on it then.

midnight adder
#

But iam no way clever enough for that

stuck anchor
#

maybe look at the distros supported on the pinephone and which other phones they run on

unborn merlin
#

Or whatever other phone that allows you to easily unlock and access things.

midnight adder
#

And chips

#

Specifically modem chips

unborn merlin
#

yes yes, as you claim and etc.

Did you know that..

You aren't in fact important enough to care about?

#

😄

#

i use linageOS on my xiaomi phone but to be fair i have the google stuff on it.

unborn merlin
#

use a hotspot then; and connect via wifi to it with a phone then.

#

pure data over vpn or w/e

midnight adder
#

Profits

#

And they use osint so they scrap your data even if you done nothing wrong

#

I was connecting a Roku the other day and it was calling home with my ssid location when I pressed certain buttons

#

It’s horrific the data these companies get

stuck anchor
#

i don't worry about google. they know a lot about me and use that for profit but they don't sell my personal info. many apps though... will happily sell anything they can get

midnight adder

i am a user of the google infasctrucutre (workspace account and all) but i am set up to not "depend" on it for the most part

midnight adder
#

You can’t 100 percent get away with no data being leaked

#

Everyone has a digital fingerprint

#

No matter how careful you are

unborn merlin
midnight adder
#

You just got to think is it worth the trade off

unborn merlin
#

so either stop whining overall about being tracked by maybe-exists modem stuff.. or just move on.

dawn badge
#

i do just enough that it stops the majroity of easy stuff. but if someone wants to go the extra mile to get my stuff then they can find out that i am not that exciting

midnight adder
#

Don’t think that was a nice comment to say I was moaning

unborn merlin
#

there is only so much that can ever be done to hide ones footprint. and are we individually important enough to modem root? probably not, no.

#

plus its not actually needed

stuck anchor
#

you can put a lot of effort in and it's for nothing if you install the wrong app

unborn merlin
#

since things like stingrays exist. 😉

#

no need to use some complicated hardware exploit when you can just use hardware that hijacks the connection to start with,

This

someones dancing up to the political line again 😛

unborn merlin

that does tend to happen with the conspiracy thing rightful or not; yes.

dawn badge

probably best dropped

midnight adder

It’s not a conspiracy though

Peagsus is defo not a conspiracy

#

It’s out in the wild now

dawn badge

anyway, i am gunna go try sleep some. good talking to you all this evening

for the speed cameras

midnight adder

Does it work?

stuck anchor
#

it did work in a controlled test and was quickly patched here according to rumors

midnight adder

So maybe if some cameras on old firmware it would work 🙂

i doubt the ocr is done in the camera

There also was a story about a family that had lots of problems with law too. Turns out they lived in the geographical center of someplace and all the whois for IPs returned their coordinates lol

unborn merlin

law enforcement being lazy? whaaaat..

mild canopy
#

quick question: does anyone know what timespan is considered "after sunset"?

#

how long "is after sunset" check will return 1?

#

midnight?

#

sooner than that?

unborn merlin
#

... any time after sunset.

#

which is an existing time thing probably retrieved from somewhere or calculated based on location+time

stuck anchor
#

until sunrise maybe?

mild canopy
#

i've noticed some automations don't work late at night so it's not until sunrise.

#

that's why i'm curious what is considered "after sumset" and what's not any more 😛

midnight adder
unborn merlin
#

here's a more fun story.

midnight adder
#

You can create your own isp now that would be good 👍

stuck anchor
#

what do the sunset/sunrise tests do when it's a month until the next one?

mild canopy
#

lol

midnight adder
#

Does it not work the same but just on the days you put it?

mild canopy
#

how do you perform a test?

unborn merlin

and also yes, usually there are

#

we like our protectionist rackets in most places!

#

its why google fiber never really managed to expand as far as they had hoped

mild canopy

I mean i can't speak for you guys, I live in Poland and here ANYONE can be an ISP, as long as they obey the law.

# midnight adder What is dark fibre?

A dark fibre or unlit fibre is an unused optical fibre, available for use in fibre-optic communication. Dark fibre may be leased from a network service provider.
Dark fibre originally referred to the potential network capacity of telecommunication infrastructure. Because the marginal cost of installing additional fibre optic cables is very low ...

#

Literally just unused fiber lines that were installed in the 1990's/2000s time

#

but fiber is fiber.. it still works and can just be picked up and used.

midnight adder
#

I think here most fibre is leased to other companies to use

#

Not sure if there any dark fibre but am sure there is

mild canopy
#

even better! existing fiber can be upgraded with multi-color transcievers

#

you can pump more than one laser into single strand without adverse effects
