for music sync ... should be around 10 ms? can you measure your latency?
There's a new keyboard coming out I thought was shared here that's....Matter certified, I think.
It's about 9 inches
Gotta memorize your key mapping.
SnazzyLab has a video about matter ... such a shitshow. Basically only HA supports matter 😄
Zigbee 4 lyfe
proof with a latency test 😄 I bet it's more like 300 ms than 10
so what's the issue? 😄
it's just a compliment to HA
and google is a disgrace....
switch to HA? well that was not the point of the video .. the point was to expose that matter versions / featuresets should be updated accordingly / more frequently by the big tech so that the end user don't get confused and have to check everything twice if something is working with their smart home. Of course HA is always the solution 😄
I learned a lot about the protocol through that video – I recommend watching it
not until I'm motivated to buy a device that requires it, and thus a suitable adapter
that was the conclusion of that video 😄
anyhow... we got esphome at home 😄
I'll write to the EU commission
they aren't going to care about matter 🤣
it's litteraly in the name
Amazon is already losing hilarious amounts of money on alexa
I imagine googles not much different
also it's apple's worst product
matter is sort of the opposite of what they want
ish
Because it lets other companies get data and etc if they're supporting it more readily
the more of your personal data goes through their hub shit the more they profit
matter doesn't really give them that exactly.. 😄
it's not their proprietary protocol in short, yes
but I mean ... imagine after 20 years we got RCS! it's possible.
we still need to enforce a smart energy standard for buildings. EV chargers, solar panels, batteries, HVAC, it's all proprietary
maybe in another 30 years
KNX is a standard 😄
after proper climate damage has really settled in. /s
not for energy
it's basically between S2 and EEBUS
but I hope there are at least one manufacturer who is chosen by us nerd folk because it is open?
not sure what you mean?
thats called esphome
😛
hmmm like ... easy to control through rs432 or something 😄
or MQTT by default
or what evrer
ya, if you solder in the esp32 😂
oh no, it doesnt enforce any of that
yeah but serial would require a house that has the wires in already for supporting such.. I mean yeah you could re-use telephone lines in some case but ehh.
yeah but I'm talking about the other hardware ... like Wechselrichter uhm what is it called in english 😄
the transformator after the solarpanel
inverter
yes
some inverters do have a serial output
but whether or not that protocol is documented or not...
uhm... you need to bring the power into the house anyways ... not a problem to add a CAT cable you can use for LAN or abuse for serial?
it doesn't matter, the device giving it commands doesn't have to know
that depends on how much people feel like putting holes in their walls.
thus why most things trend towards some wifi based proprietary hub stuff..
well I want accurate metrics (realtime, 1 ms latency!! the most!) from the inverter ^^
all cables running to our inverter are in the same tube, so we just added cat5
most inverters aren't going to output at that frequency.. 🤣
again. there is no way around holes with solar.
cat7 is my lowest standard 😛
I bet there are ones with analog outputs 😄
cat7 isn't a standard. 😉
way faster then
😄
I'll cut it out of the page too.
First off: There is no such thing as "consumer grade" category 7 cable. No matter what you may see advertised, anything branded as "Category 7" is not actually Cat7 - it's most likely Cat5, or Cat6 at best. "Real" Cat7 cabling is insanely expensive, is only available from commercial suppliers, and the connectors won't work with consumer hardware.
Category 7 is not a TIA/EIA standard, nor is it intended for use with 8P8C (RJ45) connectors. It is specifically for use in data centers with specialized equipment.
Category 6a is rated for 10 Gbps to 100 meters; the next logical step up from this would be Category 8.1, at 40Gbps but limited to 36 meters or less - although even data centers typically use fiber for anything above 1Gbps.
Category 7 cable has individually shielded twisted pairs and is designed to be used with TERA or GG45 connectors, both of which bond the shielding of the cable to the body of the connector so as to ground the entire cable. TERA/GG45 connectors are not compatible with 8P8C connectors, and attempting to use Category 7 cable with 8P8C may result in signal degradation due to currents induced in the unbonded shielding. It's also a real pain in the arse to terminate due to that extra shielding
If you're concerned about future proofing, Cat6a should be sufficient. If you want especially clean lines, get shielded cable, although this is unlikely to be of any benefit for the vast majority of people.
"reddit". okay from now on cat7 is cat6a 😄
Doesn't change the fact its still not a TIA/EIA standard.
smarter every day! you know before I left the house I thought "what will I learn today" – I can cross that out now 😄
if someone has a cat7 cable with an rj45 on it then they are objectivly doing it wrong
fuck electrons, go optical
I only know TAE plugs. those are for telephones back in the days ^^
no fuck both and just put conduit in your walls.
then you may have whatever you want as needed.
cat6 or 6a? cat8 or 8.1?
you gotta be more specfic
(I already can nerd as good as @unborn merlin :D)
i would love to run fibre through the house to connect my rack and desk but i have to win other people over in orfer to be able to do that and so far its not come to pass
not that you will ever really need fiber in your house..
Cat6 is good enough if you were able to swing that for 99.9% of cases.
e7?
that was a tough abbreviation
most people will call that "enterprise" but yes they do work well enough.
I heard only good things about their ecosystem with nvr etc.
i would also be fine with cat6/6a but if i am gunna run cable i might as well run fibre
most of the baffling is on their software stuff
yeah I decided against their ecosystem as well for reasons
happy now
well my house is using google wifi; thats because it was back before unifi stuff got cheaper and more accesisble
last year at my uni they did an experiment to reach 22.9 petabit/s to transfer a single file, that was the world record. Somebody might have beat it in the meantime
also since I can use Apple Cloud for endless camera recordings through HKVS etc.
solution: just multiplex more wavelengths
didn't @tidal bronze look for a solution to backup his video streams?
the solution to backup for video streams is "Build a NAS"
nah, I've been there 😄
it's so expensive
though arguably.. video recordings from cameras I would rate fairly low on the hierarchy of things to care about backing up
and then I would have to trust my skills 😄
750 wavelength channels covering 19 THz bandwidth over a few-mode multi-core fiber with 114 spatial channels
those are crazy numbers
getting truenas up is not that hard.. I'm about to
tho I'm gonna do proxmox and put truenas inside of that because I want to virtualize my gpu a bit for a few small VM things..
I have several NAS.... I haven't even turned on for years
i'm condensing my little home-server stuff
problem is: they're always full.
I built during college years ago a server that I thought I was gonna do more with.. and I didn't.
also I stopped collecting data 😄
dual xeon trash taking energy.
so switching to a 14th gen intel mobile (weird chinese board) build with 16 port SAS card and etc.
I got a cheapo low energy thing... can't even remember how they're called and a crappy synology
yeah I mean... it's something to impress the other gender I have to admit 😄
i replaced a dual xeon system a while back because of power. my entire rack uses less power than that thing did
yeah, my exact point 🤷♂️
Have an M40 in that thing right now for transcode power
the 14th gen will take less than half of one of that things cpus at idle probably and have transcoding built in..
yeah might upgrade my NAS at one point ... I think my CPU is called G450 or something... no idea 😄
that was a n100 at the times I think kinda
Starting at 3 drives on this build
I will consider proxmox when they drop the orange 😄
and put dark mode screenshots on their website
but then mind blowing 20 TB disks? 😄
my current plans are:
upgrade storage array - currently an almost full 4x16tb raid6 array with drives over 3 years old
upgrade gpu in the "big" server so i can run llm - it currently only has a 1650 super for transcoding
add a n150 to run haos on (probably via proxmox) - to replace the HA yellow
imagine rebuilding a 3 drive cluster 😄
many people seem perfectly fine using them
Also running z1 plan
with 22 tb disks
well as I"m not a manchild crying on twitter level of rich I have to go with what I can afford. 😉
HDD prices seem to be really volitile. i am hoping for them to stabalise after the post CES product releases
so you're only a millionaire doing raids with 3x 100 tb nvmes? 😄
also only went with the 12tb ones.
I'm also not an IT furry.
which source you use? 🤔
wasn't that a scandal? I think I saw a contractor who sold such disks 😄
often with the data not erased
ehhhhhhh... I don't know about going to amazon for most of that stuff tbh.
like.. serverpartdeals and etc is good.. amazon is.. ehhhhhhhh
there are some official sellers of factory recertified drives
also got a few smaller toshiba-SAS SSD's that I'll be using in another raidz1 for more important/faster data stuff
those I don't expect to ever kill.. 🤷♂️
I hope you live far away 😄 the three words SAS give me vietnam flashbacks from server rooms 😄
my HBA already supports em so.. 🤷♂️
laughs in 1920 drive arrays
I only know 1920x1080 pixelarrays
there was a deal on these few days ago at 284GBP i think it was but i didnt pull the trigger
https://datablocks.dev/products/seagate-exos-26-tb-sata-recertified-hard-drive?_pos=2&_fid=698524129&_ss=c
I still have nightmares about the SIX RACK Netapp cluster at work.
Four controllers, and from memory it was 52 4U shelves (1248x 600GB 15krpm drives).
I bet people were in awe of its performance when it was new
I am only aware of what netapp is becaus eof an LTT video. xD
so you're the folk are the ones collecting all the COMPLETE WITH ALL BONUSES BLURAYS that weigh 150GB? 😄
i am thinking about the sheet weight and also the start up power
Only disk shelves I've ever seen that had all 4 PSUs installed. Most only have 2
I honestly don't know what to do with so much storage
i got until this fills up to solve the issue, so its not critical but i am officialy in the nervous state
All xyratex 4U shelves have always room for 4, but I've only seen 2
yeah I'm planning to just grow my array when I have spare money and it needs it.. in groups of three drives
Apparently 15k drives was key 😄
hate it all you want its here to stay 😄
omg netapp ad is super convinving 😄 stockfootage AI.. AI.. AI ... more stockfootage 😄
"Oh you're using AI.. so your company is too destitute you're saying?"
at least they have a hardware product 😄
Netapp have been making bespoke storage servers for 20+ years
They're actually pretty cool
Just buy an Alletra MP B10000 or X10000
😛
As much as I hate racking 10U chunguses (chungi?), this was my favourite form factor they made.
Motherboards up the middle, PCIe expansion (HBAs, NICs, etc) in the horizontal slots on the sides.
Two nodes for HA in one box.
Seems like they've killed this one and gone back to each node being in a separate box again though
I loved racking the 18U RX8660
so turns out everyone in this channel is basically living in his own datacenter
The "Fuck your back" form factor
it's set and forget ... then you sell from the rack
small NAS is enough for me
I'd half expect to just see them attaching rails to the ceiling with something that can do pickups..
These suck in container DCs because the top lifts, so you can only go 80% up on a 48U rack
remember for that last 20%
Lift with your back and scrotum
y
no its clearly resting on his leg smh
😄
its a joke.. 😛
that's what powerlifters do
Nice to have DCs to drop into warzones
And to put in the middle of nowhere where you have water
Hilariously, they seem to have thought about that, and produce a very expensive box you can screw onto the platform 😄
https://serverlift.com/data-center-lifts/attachments/rl-500-riser/
I agree though, it's not perfect. But definitely the best of all the options I've tried
we will need this soon when WW3 starts
not sure whether the US will be an ally or an enemy yet but prepare for both
do you have faradayan cages already for your LoraWAN setup and linux hardware with all important packages installed?
They are already not an ally @primal laurel
is there a emergency linux advice btw?
Brb wiretap Germans
should I clone important repositories? how much data is that?
5 data
I bought ESPs in bulk. I'm going to become rich when I manage to save them from EMP ^^
and have a linux machine that still runs without internet 😄
i see the cool thing in youtube channels nowadays is mini racks. 10" wide i think? 4 or 8u
we are one step ahead, our new prime minister was previously the head of the secret service
tbh I'd love to see raspberry catching up and be as good as n100
it's just sad how everyone is saying "get a n100" and not "just get a raspi"
well if you want transcoding.. the rpi isn't the answer 😄
because they dropped the x264 hardware.
nothing more sexy than a nvme raid scewed onto a raspi 😄
different usecases, some overlap. Both can exist just fine
nah, I want speed
if speed was important for HA it wouldn't have been built with python
hmmmh... not even adding hvec or something?
well HA runs perfectly fine in my eyes - even on a rpi2 probably 😄
exactly 😄
Pi 5 only has a 4K60 HEVC decoder.
also it's just enough for me. but I just don't wanna hear the "get a n100 - a REAL computer!"
😛
more CPU sure, but y'know.. having hardware transcodes is just.. better?
how about a n150?
a pi is not the right device for a media server
hence it doesnt need a transcoder
the pi people probably know that...
yet weird that pi3/4 had it huh?
mpeg mafia is to blame probably
yup
two licenses would have cost a fortune maybe
oddly seemed to work just fine on the 3/4.
yeah just use a LG now, right? 😄 as it's rooted. I used when I had a big flatscreen Apple TV with some custom app that was okay'ish
well the silicon had it. It might just be the chip they chose, doubt they chose it because of the transcoder
when you are at the scale of the pi foundation you can in fact ask mfr's to give you things when planning a new massive product release..
well... you think mpeg mafia won't reasses every contract monthly if they can press more money out of victims?
but tbh ... Pi was always too bad for being a real media player imho... I used it a few times for party visuals – only was possible with those special encoding formats (only used by / invented for raspi kinda)
what I think happened is that broadcom told them the video IP cores were $$$$ and they said fuck that
The difference between the various N CPUs is confusing: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/compare.html?productIds=231805,231806,231800,231803,241636
A lot of it is just iGPU differences
The N300 seems like it would be good, just isn't very common.
yeah, n150 is slightly higher clock but also some of the minipc's with it have the psu integrated into it too so you dont need a "brick"
I'm using one of the Minisforum ones that has the N100 and runs from PoE: https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-s100
looks like a usb hub with hdmi 😄
It does throttle pretty badly when it's running from the PoE supply (really doesn't have the cooling for it), but I'm very seldom running it hard enough for that to be an issue
wild how things can get that tiny..
It does bear a striking resemblance
and also yeah.. POE gets dummy hot on things just dropping voltage down.. Unifi has a business-focused door control system that has its inside-door-open button thing just get like.. warm enough that its almost uncomfortable to touch
reminds me of this thing
i wouldnt mind something like that but i need to upgrade my racks switch to something with 2.5gbe poe and 2.5gbe + poe is starting to get pricey and then i also want sfp+... thats where the price jumps all the way up
You beat me to it slightly, I was thinking this one (which has just about all the same connectors)
beautiful hub - is it still sold?
yes
have been recommending it for years because its cheap and has plenty of ports 😂
but to be honest you might want something with usb-c now
nah, I got tons of china USB led lights 😄
need good power hubs for these
7 port hubs have always been... funky... too. Because most USB hub ICs are 4 ports, a 7 port hub is usually two 4 port hubs, one connected to the other.
yeah I learned about this recently
usb scene is weird 😄 I want full funnctionality! be able to switch every port
because the protocol has that included
but it's cheaper that way...
ah yes the bastard microusb port with the extra bit
this thing is trash, dont buy it
I only needed to see the microusb or w/e that is to know that
Honestly with that kind of quality, I'm surprised it doesn't plug in with an A-male to A-male cable
That's a usual warning sign for electronics that are best avoided
worked at a startup which had these on every desk
so you got stock options from a few and don't need to work anymore? then yes! 😄
not worth it 🤣
Is there nowhere to discuss node-red here anymore?
#1284980040940912641 has a node-red tag for focused questions. Random chatter though... 🤷♂️ ?
#1284980040940912641 with the node red tag
ouch, that's too bad, that was a nice community. Thanks for the info
Node-RED does have their own community forums, too. 🙂
dammit missy you know the younger folks don't know what a forum is can you put that into brainrot? /s
Given that we're on young-folk IRC right at this moment, give them a few years, they'll figure forums out eventually.
this isnt anything like IRC.
It has very little obnoxious involved to get into it..
I've been around since usenet on terminal emulators and on EFnet since we had to worry about flash.c and then winnuke. I understand the ephemeral issue of Discord and there's no winning either way, it's just unfortunate that we lost a few good hangouts like node-red and all the frigate talk in cameras
I think it's the easy access to memes, really.
true enough
One episode is out. It's weekly
see how good it is to not have finished S01? 😛
I had fear that it's not worth it 😦
Hi all! In the instructions for installing HASS via Docker, it says to use --network=host, which causes it to be accessible from 0.0.0.0:8123 ... not knowing Docker very well, how do I change that for it to be accessible from only a specific IP, 10.0.0.1:8123 in my case?
I've watched that show twice already, cannot wait to see ep 1.
(Sorry, didn't want to post that in any of the support channels, since it's a Docker question more than a HASS question)
ah, alright, so just the normal way. no special Docker stuff. thanks!
lmao.. so I've been fighting with getting Frigate fully working with my Reolink cameras.. problems getting the 4K streams to load at full res for recording and all that.. on a whim, I just added the cameras to HA directly.. and all the features I wanted.. just work.. I don't need Frigate at all.
What are you using frigate for?
New mobile UI for me.
eh?
thats probably because you're not catering to reolink's bullshit correctly?
I'd imagine reolink in HA uses a specific plugin to get their streams in whatever non-standard-bullshit manner 😛
probably have to use.. go2rtc as an intermediary for reolink proper streaming
I have 1 reolink camera, my doorbell, and I refuse to upgrade the firmware
so I can get the streams to load without go2rtc, but go2rtc itself refuses to load the 4K streams. it just gives a black screen for only those. Anything below that works fine
hm
You sure its not a browser issue?
I'm still thinking its probably some reolink-shit because I know the reolinks I had to use somewhere required some extra bullshit just to get streams working properly.
many browsers don't support x265
what are you talking about.. 🤣
I ran into the same issues with my camera's
more browsers and mobile phones probably support x265 than server hardware that good portion of people use do.
not reolink they wouldn't play my camera's
oh it most definitely is Reolink's fault, haha
until it got switched to x264
All I'm saying it double check its not the browser 🙂
anyway, I had the good sense to stick microSD cards in the cameras when I was putting them up, so they can just record internally and HA can access and download/play the recordings :D
Some treat HA as an extended remote control as well. So it all makes sense, I guess.
yeah, fair.. want to make a guess on how often? just curious
constant writing does burn through sd cards fairly quickly its why people prefer not to use sd cards long term on pi's..
(also why frigate has that ram-swap space instead)
If you want it to be less often, buy larger capacity cards (and make sure they're the "endurance" models), then for a belt-and-braces solution make the partition not 100% of the capacity
But temperature is still a bit of a killer
Nothing wrong with them at all. https://docs.frigate.video/configuration/camera_specific/
This page makes use of presets of FFmpeg args. For more information on presets, see the FFmpeg Presets page.
sold NVR's are less performant/feature-full than frigate is tho
this discussion was literally started by someone who was having issues with em.. 😛
I run them. No issues.
hell unifi could support so many more features if it tried to.
like.. they could get a coral accel inside probably 😛
if the software supported it I mean..
any 4K cameras? Those are the ones I'm having issues with
(and assume newer.. we bought them all in the last 6 months)
what sort of 4k are we talking.
Are we talking "actually 4k resolution" or "aliexpress china-4k" 🤣
well the videos the cameras record are actually 4K, so the optics and hardware are fine
What's the issue?
clear/highres stream won't load/gives black screen for go2rtc and frigate docs say that's needed for playback at full res
rtc url?
onvif://view:<pw>@<ip>:8000?subtype=000 though I tried the RTSP link too
POE?
I don't use onvif so can't say much.
1reolink:
- "ffmpeg:http://192.168.X.X/flv?port=1935&app=bcs&stream=channel0_main.bcs&user=sample-user&password=sample-password#video=copy#audio=copy#audio=opus"
reolink_cx810:`
Tried this already?
hmm I haven't.. I'll try that out I guess :D
also make sure you are 264 and not 265
looks like it defaults to h265 on 4k.
whether it will let you use 264 on 4k or not.. who knows 🤷♂️
yeah I'm not sure that's changable.. hmm
You got extra juice with your frigate machine? You could re-encode as well.
a lot of juice.. or a modern GPU
GPU? Are we talking watermelons?
I am planning on sticking a GPU in the server, haha
get a battlemage gpu or something 😛
Try it out. Pretty sure you can sort this out.
It's interesting. Seems to attempt to lessen the friction of needing to press and hold to do those 3 things. I am not too bothered by it.
good thing i didnt purchase one yet ^^ ;D
So tell us about your frigate setup
I mean, I know a few people have a hateboner for Reolink and apparently their older cameras are garbage, but other than the connection issues, the cameras themselves have been great.. good image and sound quality, no cloud account requirement.. tbh a big help would be if Frigate had their own community, lol
Ironically I don't have my own 😄
but I do manage two for someone else at their house/business. 🤣
Oh, that explains a lot 👌
oh there's a few reolinks.
though unsure whether reolink or unifi are more annoying; the unifi cameras just.. eat goddamned CPU cycles up for some reason. 🤷♂️
its not all unifi; only external
the inside cameras (of which there are many) we elected to not have the place spend 3000$+ to do. 😛
I am just about to planning on which new cams to put up. Not having Frigate work properly kinda defies the purchase. But on the other hand there aren't others available here which i would consider
Even got a coral :'v
What kinda dip? So many options but me hungry.
'available here'? You can't ali order? 🤔
Of course I can order ewaste, but why would I want to do that
I already have such in place, it's terrible
I mean.
You can in fact get decent chinese cameras that work the same.
(Reolink is of course, also just chinese cameras..)
I'm really not enjoying to find out which ones are good
I mean.. I recently got a few that used for the warehouse; then ordered some more for later use that are outdoor style cameras that.. I believe are the same chipset inside.. If ye want I can share 🤣
oh and they have open telnet port.. and the password is known/cracked. 🤣
I think I'd rather not have a camera based on that
this looks 10000000x better
A lot of rolls
and as said.. that'st he lower res one. (and of course a lot of rolls, its a textile warehouse.)
I mean I could just ignore frigate and buy their NVR but that would be a bit of a cheat, especially as that ain't even good
That view is this camera at 4MP. https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807212792794.html
so there is an 8MP too.
Whomst can we stick poke to fix it ;D
thats also the indoor camera
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805348227700.html
This is the outdoor version, same sensors I believe as far as I've poked about them
There are a few small caveats about it
- it doesn't like to connect if its not on a 192.168.1.x network to start (you have to go in and enable dhcp and such; in fact dhcp is only enabled once at the start otherwise; unsure why)
- the keyframe settings are a bit odd.
on the other hand.. 18$ for POE 4MP, 26$ for POE 8MP..
that is not bad price wise I think
and the telnet port is open and available.. for fixing issues if need be or taking a deeper peek. 🤣 (though I had to fix a few over the UART on a camera thats settings decided to get locked up after some vlan shit before I knew about the first caveat..)
also as a note.. as I found this out myself sadl
their cheap PTZ (https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806177994524.html? ) does not work with frigate
doesn't support the relative-moment thing and etc. 😦
its controllable yes and can be moved on the frigate controls.. but can't auto-track.
and the app to set it up sucks ass. 😦
70-100 bucks without shipping ain't exactly cheap
hm?
That kinda purchase is a bit too suspicious for me ^^

Flying Eyes 10% OFF: https://flyingeyesoptics.co...
that's what their "non discounted" price says
oh please you know how aliexpress works
they pretend thats the price and that they're giving you a sale; when that is the regular price.
You don't usually get those once logged in in my experience if they even consider shipping it to you
I've looked up the camera module inside of these things
they sell for 15$ on alibaba
I don't know how they fucking sell these things so cheap
It's either the fakest thing or it's simply ewaste that needs to go
for sure
I even have a firmware dump.
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256803242651876.html module inside.. probably an expensive seller.
I do wish it was supproted by openIPC tho, that'd be awesome.
But its not and I don't understand firmware dev enough to make it so. 💔
thats one of the neater.. but at the same time basically nearly worthless open source things.. They don't list any cameras that are known to have supported chipsets anywhere. 😐
damn... again I can cross one off my list for what I learned today 😄 cool stuff this IPC – do you know any cams? 😄
No.
Or I'd be buying and flashing them
oh it has a supported hardware tab 😄
they only list chipsets.
which guess what..
none of the sellers list that shit
you can buy raw modules.
But at that point you may as well just strap a pi zero2w and a camera together and shove it in a 3d printed case.
well guess what... there might be actual people working there answering questions 😄
or don't they know either 😄
its a telegram thing, and not really and they don't really.. do that much
telegram as in app or how long it takes 😄
as in the app
well, gimme the contacts, I'll ask 😄
who knows? it doesn't matter I didn't get any information. 😄
maybe try to get a technician not a regular joe probably doing child labor 😄
the karen style
telegram is where I asked.
aliexpress sellers
are not going to give you shit.
they don't know or care. 🤣
that doesn't work in not-america on the internet.
we can crack them 😄
do they have telephone? 😄
maybe we can guess the direct number for the techician department
substantial amount orders always work
aliexpress sellers.
Do not have technician departments.
they're rebadging shit from somewhere else
okay... hm. we need to get closer to the source then.
the default password on those modules is the same as the keview cameras
which tells me they're literally just slapping it in a generic box (it literally just says their company name and HD camera on it)
like in every biz... always best to cut the middle man 😄
honestly somebody needs to move there and establish some business relations.
I'd do it. Save some money folks 😄
https://openipc.org/cameras/vendors/novatek <- they have the module this camera uses listed; just no supprot
what about this: https://www.chip1stop.com/BD/en?makerCd=SIGM&keyword=SigmaStar+Technology&keyWordFlg=true
A site for ordering SOC's with a MOQ of 50?
https://xonztech.com/product/5mp-ip-camera-moduleswith-zoom-program/ they seem to produce

what's the latest and greatest sony sensor for those boards?
SONY IMX335 <-- good?
the issue is.
its not really.. all that cheap.. to throw togethre your own quick power module+watertight seal + IR led module + etc on top of that and put it in a waterproof case
thus what makes openIPC sort of a joke unless your goal is spending more than you really should ever have to; to have fully-yours-cameras functioning as they should.
well choose to get spied from Tapo or pay for it!! 😄
no, you see this is what VLANs are for.
no internet, no worky worky
you put the chinese camera on a VLAN... and it gets to see nothing except to be talked to by your server.
Shit, I do that with non-Chinese cameras at work
(most of ours are Axis, which seems to just be an expensive option but not providing output of significantly higher quality)
yeah aight let's go all in ^^
let's start with coding a cloud so we can offer subscriptions (9,99€/month)
@forest edge your fav
In my neverending quest to find all sorts of random crap in thrift stores to build up the smart home...... found a roomba at a goodwill for ten bucks. New battery and charging dock are already on the way.
I wonder how well the integration for it will work with HA...
probably depends on how old it is.
if its reached the mfr's "Fuck you pay us for a new one" date.
...or how quickly my cat will decide it needs to be bugged constantly. XD
It's a 600 series. I checked continuity on the motors, they're all fine, nothing else looks toasted, I'm swapping the battery out because it's flat, and getting a new dock because it didn't come with one.
Apparently it doesn't map, I guess? Or maybe it does? No one can agree. But eh, I don't much care if it does or not, long as it tidies up a little. XD
(it's a 694)
lol they had a chinese knockoff there too, one of the deewhatever ones... that has no bin. XD
Not that it was missing, but that it just.... doesn't have one. It doesn't vacuum at all. I'm still trying to figure out why it exists. XD
But yeah, if the roomba can pick up a little cat hair from time to time? Good enough for me. XD
I'm a little surprised there isn't a 3d printed DIY smart vacuum project that I can find.
I'm sure there's something out there, but there's a lot of data that would involve, between IR mapping, connectivity, scheduling(that part is simple at least), and running all the relays to run the suction and sweeper motors properly.
Also battery management, mapping to dock, etc.
all of those parts are simple.
They're all individually simple. Getting them all to behave on top of each other is where it gets interesting. Especially since you'll need gaskets too, so a straight print won't do the job.
there's one for mowing grass. Does that help?
hehe.
I'm aware of that, several even
I love the mower roombas. Especially how people complain about them. XD
"But they don't cut tall grass!" They're not supposed to. They're maintenance bots, not full growth cutters.
it's one of those things that is simple to build, extremely difficult to get perfect
you won't have full growth if you use them right*
Checkout openmower
I foresee that with this roomba being a problem. I'm..... not great at keeping things off the floor. XD
should've bought that new-new one that has a robot arm to pick up socks smh
If I could get my hands on a workshop and all the money, I would make house androids. But like... NOt shitty like musk's scam. XD
(obligatory "TELL 'IM BOUT THE SEX ROBOT, KRIEGER!" reference here.)
I doubt AI is going to bring us robotic house slaves, sorry
Long as it can get the laundry off the floor, maybe cook, MERCILESSLY DISPATCH THE SOLDIERS OF THE DYSTOPIAN FUTURE OVERSEERS, maybe scrub the countertops, I'm good...
You know. The little things.
lets start by doing the laundry first
also I need to cook first
good that it's 1:50 am 😄
but let's be honest... we badly need one then 😄
nice, maybe you can do a workshop one day 😄
"and this alarm notifies me to change underwear, the nfc in each pant is registered and it will be noticed when I don't change with a alarm that goes louder and louder"
yeah maybe not screaming but a soothing voice? 😄 breathing into your ear
NO! It's more fun without them!
oh you get pain when it's not adjusted?
sux... but didn't I read they have now a fix?
like to completely reverse diabetes
mood tho. Adderal is still on shortage, so my ass just has to deal with it and supplement with coffee
why shortage?
can't you get something similar?
Because America. XD
The DEA severely limits provisioning for adderal because they are dumb. So even as demand increases, provisioning doesn't.
it's just a stimulant, right?
is it true that the DEA has its own judges?
like all in one? executive and judicative in one
Pretty much, but with a bit more complexity involved, both in the chemistry and how it interacts with the condition. And yeah, kinda.
so just take the next best?
The Office of Chief Counsel for the DEA have a weirdly large amount of unchecked power.
The next best is "Lots more coffee". Which is what I do. XD
ritalin?
hmmm so maybe call DEA
But yeah, the DEA gets to tell doctors that your condition isn't real if they think you might be potentially maybe possibly going to sell them. Even if you definitely won't.
lmao yeah, nah, we don't get to do that here. XD
wth? so DEA now doctors
I almost miss working in that shithole pharmacy that was CVS.
hehe. Welcome to ameeeeeeerica. XD
nobody trusts doctors in the US I guess
because I could just.. search the system to find a place that had some
The DEA and the insurance companies both get to make medical decisions for you that your doctor can't. Even though neither of them are doctors.
stimulant production quotas are assigned on like a yearly-or-something basis
and medications are produced in.. large batches
then rotated on the line to make something else
Yarp.
so when a shortage hits; its not really that its not being made enough so much as..
well, then make waitlists ... easy
its not being made at all right now
Or to put it another way, my country is a bureaucratic nightmare. XD
great
narcotic scripts (which is where C2 like stimulants are..) are on expiration dates
In my state and many others.
30days from script date without fill? its now needing a new fill.
how about you rework your drug scheduling. Alcohol is most dangerous to start with
because lobbying
Yeah, I'd love it if we could just Do that. But no one in charge wants to because then they look "soft on crime" and "helping the druggies", so they all avoid it like a third rail because they care more about their career than helping people.
and why all this stuff?
probably because america was perfectly fine doing the opiate crisis
Also we tried banning alcohol at one point, it gave us the framework for crappy primetime reality shows and Nascar.
which is probably one of the reasons controls are stricter now
I have to say tho that americans are kinda known to "all" have adderal addictions 😄
because we spent the 90's dispensing opiates like they were fucking pez.
sooo ... maybe it's a thing that America has a prescription drug problem???
This always makes me giggle.
Governments: "We can't give you adderal, it's addictive and you'll become dependent."
Meanwhile, people with ADHD: "lol forgot to take my meds again today."
(Adhd brains are weird that way)
thankfulyl I get 3 month supplies of my adderall.. and don't take it every day (weekends or when I'm doing stuff I enjoy so I do have some amount of buffer.
I got ADHD
Yeah, I feel like regulatory bodies don't realize quite how task forgetful we can be. And that we're really, REALLY bad at getting signals from our bodies that we need to do a thing, i.e. Eating, much less taking a pill on time. XD
Like, I regularly forget why I went through a doorway with laundry in my hand when what I was doing was taking my laundry to the laundry room. XD
but I know for a fact that methyphenidad is just melting your brain in the long run... also you always gotta be looking for preventing rebound etc. ... it can be tough at times. So I stopped that. It for sure helped but so is THC ^^
... yes "for a fact"
thc sadly doesn't do anything good for me. I've got a ton of nerve damage on top of everything else, so everything I get from THC is ALL the bad stuff.
many different definitions of that, that I've noticed.
Yeah, I was ignoring that part XD
@warm helm I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
ignoring that we have many many many requiremnents and safety checks on things we give to children and yet..
when all they need is a little attention 🫨
(But yeah, the nature of the nerve damage is fun because it means a lot of autonomous stuff doesn't behave as it should. Like Balance, and Walking. Combine that with tremors and a bunch of other things and I'm not allowed thc or alcohol. yaaaaaaaaay immune conditions. XD
Hint: we're less shitty at detecting these neurological issues now.
THIS. XD
We used to take kids with those problems and just shove them in a 'special' class. And then they'd just drop out because they weren't getting anywhere.
It isn't that they need More attention, it's that they need Different attention. Seriously, how many folks do you know who were in the G&T classes as kids, and now they're burned out as all hell ADHD adults.
proper workers that we can just abuse*!
G&T?
😄
(for those outside of Amurka, G&T is Gifted and Talented, which is a nice way of saying "We know you're smart, but also we'll just pile expectations on you instead of working with you and your condition."
oh yeah I saw the Simpsons episode 😛
Obligatory "Simpsons did it" joke here.
anyhow ... as a European I can only recommend all of you to move to our continent.
😄
free drugs
free healthcare
But yeah, in my case, picked up material faster than anyone, pushed my math skills beyond everyone by several grades, but hated doing homework because of what I'd later find was a change in venue condition issue. Also literally never studied but always got top marks on tests. XD
lots of jobs
Like..... I don't UNDERSTAND studying. I either know it or I don't.
let's go with instead of european or american
"Maybe learned something from the nazis."
"Definitely didn't learn anything from the nazis."
I mean, they were shitheads, but maybe that chocolate would help the adhd kids XD
😄 wdym? you're not gonna Blitzkrieg us now?
the drug supplies are limited and the rest is in a secret location
(historical reference: The wehr developed a chocolate bar with meth in it for soldiers. XD )
Yaaaarp. THough to be fair, this was in the era of medicinal tonics that "cured everything" but were like..... heroin, cocaine, thc, and a LOT of alcohol.... XD
they worked ..?
Which.... I mean, I guess, it's really hard to have a sore throat if you can't feel your entire body.
I think the one that blew my mind was one that promised to help colic. In babies.
And I'm just like "...bruh." XD
"Plus side, your baby isn't crying as much. Downside, he is absolutely whacked out on smack."
well, ... got a crying baby? dunk some bread in beer and let the baby suck ^^ it was common back in the days 😄

This is my most requested video of all time! In this video I test a bunch more crazy recipes from the notorious 1933 chemical formulary. Uranium crayons, co...
Yeah, my ex's dad would give them whiskey shots at bedtime, which explained SO much. XD
is he making meth or not
There was like an asthma cigarette in one of those series actually.. And then a "cough solution" that involved chloroform
and his response to the latter was
no need for uranium chalk
"Well if you're not breathing you're not coughing."
actually that sounds super toxic 😄
Yeah, pre-war stem toys were..... interesting.
There was a chemistry set for kids that had all manner of radioactive materials in it. XD
Sometimes I wonder how we survived as a species. XD
a friend of mine got an old set like this
but some stuff you had to get from the drugstore
I guess so the sets don't explode in masses in the shops 😄
I've got a small collection of steam-powered toys from the early 1900s.
Literally fill it with water, light the burner, and go
Boomer has entered the chat 😄 with his steam collection
They still sell those. You can get little stirling engines on Amazon that are kinda fun as a desk toy.
"watch out kids, this was back in MY days"
I can taste the lead poisoning from here.
did you know coal power plants emit more radioactive material than nuclear power plants?
^^ nah
maybe that connected to esphome or something actually doing something useful...
Some of them are kinda pretty tho. XD
can it be converted to a fan in the summer?
(That one is also a USB charger. Turns the power into electrical)
no way 😄
Photo is from ebay, not my one.
This one is later (1960s), but definitely seems they were toys for children, in the normal sense.
Just with fire, and shit
destroy your iPhone 16 battery in one easy step 😄
I imagine the wattage is.... disappointing. But hey, it's a fun little trinket. So in theory, you COULD turn it into a fan power source XD
lol I doubt it would destroy it, but it would be a really slow trickle charge most likely XD
I had a cooler one
also with gearbox
oh but mine was not steam powered... that is some smoker there 😄
This one claims it can generate 3W: https://www.bioliteenergy.com/products/campstove-2-plus

Are there any custom-trained Ollama models for HomeAssistant? Or do people just use the largest llama-3.x they can fit into their hardware?
oh I read 3kW 😄
hm. not really much tbh 😄
Those tiny mechanism models like that are neat though. I really want one of those engine models that used to be all over facebook videos.
"Build yourself a V8 the size of a soda can with about 500 tiny screws", that kinda thing.
(then again, I am the nerd who enjoys minecraft create mod just so I can build a bunch of crap and watch it run. XD )
Speaking of...
Is there a way to integrate HA into a server monitor for existing services on winserver?
i.e. a minecraft server, stash server, etc, just so you have a line in your headsup with the server status, and a quick-restart button that closes it and restarts the executable
though that does make me also wish we had stash integration for HA. It's like plex but for adult things. Wonder if it would be a pain or not to make that happen.
eww.. windows server?
It runs smooth and does what I tell it to, and it's a lot less temperamental than a lot of linux options I've tried.
listen we're not all that republican speaker of the house who has his son spying on how much porn he watches.
Tried rockstor, it hilariously did not work right and kept not realizing it existed, tried truenas, that one kept rolling itself back on updates without asking and STILL failed to actually believe it existed... XD
winserver just runs. And that's all I ask of it. XD
pics or it didnt happen
that's a screenshot photoshopped to a black background
Wait wait wait, the Pi goes inside? Neat
tbh I am not sure if I cut my drywall for this screen 😄
but I'm also spoiled by good displays
I'm curious to see people's reviews on Shelly's new one once it's shipping
https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/6/24334151/shelly-wall-display-x2-ces-2025
if you can cut drywall you can hide cables
it's easy
also when wireless power 🙂
I saw some projects making use of this for tiny LEDs already
no idea... do iPads have a magnet on their back with Qii?
that'd solve it kinda
or ...any other Android tablet I guess
just needs chrome in fullscreen mode for HA or the app
the issue there is..
Shelly didn’t announce pricing or a release date but said that the Shelly Wall Display X2 should be available internationally in Q1, with US availability to follow.
Its made not for US's wall boxes.
not to start.. And we'll see if they port it over.
what a bad photoshop
look closely how it's mounted
I was wondering because this doesn't look like 7"
are you.. not aware how thin things can be?
now I see it's competely fucked up
and how they tend to work on their other mount-to-wall like things..
most of the "Do stuff" is mounted protruding into the box
it's flying in the air!
hahaha, that's messed up
use what you have ofc
shelly found the 4th dimension
Well I'm not in the US, but I'm still dead-set against pre-ordering anything, in any case.
here is a better picture
here is the better link even: https://www.shelly.com/de/blogs/media-kit/shelly-group-premieres-shelly-dimmer-gen3-and-shelly-wall-display-x2

If you look at the original one, the back will probably be similar.
But yeah, EU wall box
if you load 4 of them in one dashboard there's no point having it in 4k, can't you do something about that?
hm. I'm not sure I'd invest into that shelly display... where the hell should it get the currently playing song from. Who plays MP3 nowadays (through a wall panel even)
I can already see it having tons of flaws 😄
because it's not open enough
Outputs
1 relay output
also a single output on something that large is a bit of a joke
I guess they're thinking that you're losing a light switch installing it, so they're just offering a replacement
I think it can, the other one could
probably runs android
which other one?
understand, but you're not going to be able to view the higher quality anyway. Unless you click on one stream
yup they have a good reputation all in all
I think just their dimmer has been burning down many houses 😄
you mean like the mystery bridges that collapsed?
wdym mystery bridge 😄
it was the aliens
it was a plane
nothing wrong with mushrooms 👍
Android8.1 said somebody on reddit
speculated price 250€ or 300€
not sure ... you can get great iPads or other tablets for that price
also this is kinda some unsolved problem... nobody's gonna use this anyways 😄 it looks cool for 5 min and then it's useless
With a side of garlic butter claws 😀
mushrooms with crab.... eh...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DHFSDV46?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 I picked up 8 of these to replace some yeelight (XIaomi home server registration required Dx ) so I could locally control them. These suckers are extremely bright. I am really impressed.

What else?
@forest edge My Jeep misses you making fun of it.
its a jeep does it really need someone actively making fun of it?
I had two jeeps.
just for context
😛
Yes, it does. It requires a lot of attention, be it good or bad 😂
ah yes old jeep computer starts having issues
where did they put the ECU?
Up above the wheel well of course!
With nothing between it and the wheel!
GENIUS DESIGN!
Oh jeeze, I didn't realize that's where it was located.
at least in one I had
super fun getting to play the
"lol you made a left at the light and your engine turned off, have fun with manual steering."
Looks like mine (2016) is behind the wiper fluid tank on the driver side, plenty shielded from road water.
This is part of the jeep experience though, right? 😉
had tires come off twice.
once was because BJ's overtightened lugnuts
the other time?
Fuck knows.
both times while driving of course
super fun.
🙃
I once had my hub studs snap resulting in the brake rotor riding the inside of the wheel until I came a stop. That was a terrible day...
yeah after that I bought a torque wrench
I do my own checking of things these days
Jeepers creepers
What in tarnation, I have never had a wheel come off in 22 years of driving, with 20-40k km per year last summer alone was 25000 over 3 months with 4 different cars
old shitty cars.. overtightening lugnuts.. etc
Then again, I've had one flat tire in 22 years
I've always changed my own tires, until two years ago I put my tires into off-site storage
Relevant fact is also Norwegian have two sets of tires per car, and we drive each of them 5-7 months per year
And I usually replace them every 5 years
Was fun to move from 16-21" tires btw, 16" was $500 for 4 tires plus rims, 21" was $1800 for 4 tires, no rims
Interesting. I never even considered having two sets of tires for different seasons.
In Texas our "winter" lasts a few weeks, spread out across a couple of months.
I'd say "shots fired", but that might be another Texas pun
Holy CRAP batman
winter tires used in summer would wear out in no time. and summer tires on winter roads - not for long (involuntary offroading)
I love winter, proper 4wd go brrrrrrrr
Old quattro's are great
Modern cars are fine if you turn off all safety mechanisms
i used to have a range rover. that was a nice car in the winter. and the summer.
Not sure about the range Rover, but the land Rover has lots of issues in Norway
Due to the gearbox design which is partially open
And it accumulates sloppy snow and freezes
They might have fixed it in the post 2010 models
i know a few land rover owners and have never heard of that problem. had a land rover defender for years. of course the ones i know about are not fancy new ones like the newer discovery models and such
Yeah these were the older ones
But do you live in arctic climate?
Oh right you are Norwegian too
Doesn't happen on the west coast I'd assume
west coast, so not as arctic as other places in the country
Yeah, exactly
Only rain, two days of snow per year
Kinda like texas

I still haven't seen snow on the west coast ever, and I commute to Stavanger, Bergen and Ålesund quite a bit
Oh wait, one time, when I went to Kvam herad
But that is Inland
we get several snow cycles each winter. a snow cycle consists of a few days of snow. just enough to get the plows out, get heaps of snow everywhere. then light rain for 2 days to get that snow soaked. and then freezing cold for a week. long lines of elderly people with broken hips at the er, etc.
Btw, this is the brightest it gets in winter here @peak cloud
SHOTS FIRED!!!!
That's crazy. Does the lack of sunlight ever cause widespread depression?
That sucks, I'm sorry to hear that 😦
If you're joking, that's not something to joke about.
Damn man, please feel free to reach out anytime you need someone to talk to. I don't care what time of day it is. I can PM you my phone number and you can text/call me.
Usually I have to put thick blankets on all my windows
It will be my first summer up here in 17 years since I moved south, so maybe it has improved
We'll see
you are further north than me then. here we just get extremely short days in winter and short nights in summer. at mid-summer it doesn't get dark even if the sun is below the horizon.
i've been to tromsø a few times. loong ago
Is there an automation to snooze seagulls?
That's another thing with midnight sun
Seagulls don't go to sleep either
They are up all night
My town is even well known to have agressive seagulls
We call them the rats of the Arctic
My friend's parents don't have HA installed, but I reckon if I can snooze the gulls I can convince them to install it.
Soo glad I don't live by the coastline
Our offices in Houston gets flooded each year
Have they tried not putting them in Houston
Sadly the UK doesn't have the concept of "far enough from the coast to get away from the gulls"
That sounds about right. I'm also happy that I don't live in South Texas.
I should get a trip to our main offices in texas soon, unless the us goes full handmaid's tale

or they flood again:D
Living in Texas and not having traveled much makes it difficult for me to understand the size/distance for other countries. Is every part of the UK just so close to the coastline or what?
Surprised they even know water
If you do, let me know! I would love to meet up! I am only 5-6 hours away from Houston!
The furthest point from the sea is about 70 miles in the UK
We're a small weirdly shaped island
Unfortunately there is France in close proximity as well, so not just seagulls are of an issue

What about us, we look like a guitar, but if we weren't there Sweden would look like a ball sack @keen bridge
*with several sub-islands we may or may not acknowledge/include
Oireland
That one's special and involves more recent wars/conflict
LOL
Maybe y'all need a checkup up/down there
Holy bonkers, that's insane!!
This ain't Texas
Thinnest point of Norway is just 6km
That would barely fit an American between aisle 3 and 4
This season was one of the best
I love taskmaster
With Rhon just coming with new stuff from Greg
OMFG my wife and I love Taskmaster! We're nearing the end of the 17th season and not looking forward to it being over 😢
THEY REACHED THE END????
Fuck
I didn't get that message
I hope not, I just meant the end of what we have available to watch.
Do you watch the various international versions?
I've started on assorted worldwide versions, some of the subtitles are better than others.
Season 18 is already available though
We haven't yet, but I plan to delve into those as soon as we finish S18.
I want to see someone like Jimmy Carr in there tbh
Jimmy Fallon would be a better fit I think
I've been relatively surprised how generally beloved NZ's version seems to be.
I think perhaps just that most of our contestants seem to be a bit unhinged.
Not quite in the same manner as the Norwegians, who just seem to prefer power tools and fire to solve tasks though.
Oh that would be cool indeed
Power tools and fire sounds amazing
I don't think he'd handle our endless mockery well enough
Guz Khan was hilarious
You should watch 8 out of ten cats does countdown
it's still running and not wedged at the bottom between two huge boulders?
-# the size of a small boulder
Barely running -- I've got a rear main seal leak that's dropping oil like crazy. So worried that it might sieze up at any moment.
good thing it's a jeep. should be fairly easy to fix diy lol
😂 Yeah, that's exactly what I thought when I bought it.
Our new supercomputer went into production this week in Stuttgart I see @glacial knot
proceeds to put JB weld on the area of the leak.
will we see about this on known yt channels in the future
breaking out the good stuff? duct tape seems to be the norm
duct tape, superglue and sugru should be in the toolbox. hammer and crowbar for the stuff that should be moving but doesn't.
I guess I should start keeping some duct tape in my Jeep for the norm issues.
and in case you run out of fuses on the road...
a neighbor found that the 2000 amp one really blows fast when you use it directly across the terminals on a 24V truck battery. he woke up a few meters away completely confused.
the norm issues for you sound like it would be taping your wheels on?
i've actually seen screwdrivers jammed into between the fuse terminals on a building before
Hi everyone,
how do you all make automations resistant to home assistant crashes or outages?
I've been thinking a lot about that because I had that happen recently and a bunch of automations broke.
What I mean by that is when you have an automation - lets take an easy one and say lights go on when presence is detected - and HA has an outage and then devices start reporting again to HA then you might run into an issue where the sensor reports first and says presence detected and then the light reports later but the automation already ran but the light did not receive the command to turn on because it was not yet connected to HA. In that scenario the light will only turn back on once the presence is cleared at least once (aka you leave the room).
I've thought about building some kind of state machine logic that just triggers every X seconds in HA or with appdaemon but that feels like a lot of work and maybe I run into other issues when I do that because its not the HA way. idk I just feel like the automation kinda lack the sophistication to handle these things (I programmed PLCs for a while).
Whats your take on this and how you you all mitigate these problems?
If homeassistant isnt working properly there isnt anything you could do from homeassistant to trigger things
you probably want to move to making a thread in #1284980040940912641 but serious question... how often do you get outages? do you have unstable power or something?
At best you would manage to setup a fallback logic in case homeassistant doesnt communicate with your device, but that is a very device specific task
i guess you could write a script that runs a series of status checks and sets things right then run that on startup
I'm pretty sure HA waits for integrations to be ready before it lets automations fire
I don't think so
I've never had any issues with restarting in that sense. Of course you're going to miss some stuff while rebooting
as in, I think automations is somewhere down in the chain
but its not that every integration completely finished set up when automations are set up
Neat. I might go there for a concert this year
At a university?
Then what happens to the automation calling a service of an integration which is not ready? It just fails?
yes
as in
we are now doing the movement to create services during setup
as in, don't have them rely on a working config entry
What you gain is consistent services, all services are always available
downside is that all service are alwas available, also the ones that might not work with your model
yeah but there a some timing issues with external zigbee2mqtt serveres
And you still need a working integration for a service to work, but if for example your HA can't connect to your inverter during startup, it will still create the services
keep in mind that zigbee2mqtt is mqtt, and thus async
I just wanted to start a discussion about it and see what others do I dont really need help with anything :)
yes what I mean is that depending on the situation it might not get picked up or report the wrong status back (lights show as on but are off)
its not about the frequency and not really a problem for people that know what they are doing.
Does zigbee2mqtt show the updated state? Maybe you have some retain setting on which causes MQTT integration to show the old state until a new one comes in
rather than unknown/unavailable
I mean this happens at most a few times a year but it got me thinking about the reliability. Lets say a friend wants a smarthome - I would not set up HA for that person if the person can just about manage to turn on his PS5 and nothing more. I just think HA "breaks" way to often for that and a big reason why are the way automations are implemented imo. I think automations are somewhat easy to understand and implement but there is a reason state machines are used for industrial automations.
I guess this also is defined by how your integrations are set up and what devices you use
I frequently run into the problem where I go into a room at the exact time the lights turn off (the 1 second fade out time) and then the motion sensor triggers the lights dont go back on but report as on in HA - but thats a different issue and prob has something to do with my setup - not the thing I wanted to get into :)
Like for example do you know the sleep analyser from Withings?
That works via webhooks. But if you restart HA, you lose the state, as we can't do a request to know if you are in bed or not
So I get a lot of people asking me if we can restore that state on boot
I noticed that automations work really for devices that constantly update they status but that is just because it constantly triggers automations
But I don't like that, as for example you could have a power outage at night, and continues through 10AM, when you're at work
and then when power comes back, everything goes into "you're sleeping" mode
so I rather have people build their automations calculating in that their mat can be unknown after a restart
my setup and power is stable enough that i dont ever really think about this kind of thing and if it happens ill deal with it at the time
although i did have some issues with long running automations that if i did restart for an update or something it broke them so i moved them to state machines
@red rock yes but then you would just have a state machine - which is rather annoying to implement in HA. And also you dont have "real time guarantees" in HA but that is not really necessary in most scenarios.
But HA is one massive state machine 🙂
btw just to clarify here - I would like to recommmend HA that is why I am talking about it :)
The key is to not have long running automations 😅
i use input select helper to make state machines
yeah thats why i got rid of them all
realistically i wouldnt set HA up for someone that is not technically initiated in such a way that they can learn and deal with stuff
thats an idea - I just wish there was a native way to create state machines through the gui - just a dropdown - classic automation/state machine automation - something to think about I guess
At this point I believe that someone must want to do something with home automation and be willing to learn it
but wouldnt it be great if you could just set it up and forget about it
Got a friend who already a few devices and running in Google Home a green
and I was really hyped, and now I still feel I have to prove the value of HA to him
What non technical person knows what a state machine is? Or how to program one?
well i use a standard automation to change the input select between states based on various paramaters. but its not super simple i grant you
thats not a state machine
No what I mean is: The technical person implements it and then the non technical person uses it without the need for the techy to constantly fix things - in an ideal world I would like to be able to create a smarthome for my mother and update it once or twice a year and not think about it - but that is not to point we are at right now
And I think the deep integration of state machines into how HA works would help
