agreed. But the borders are not well defined

#

its easier to talk about applications rather than entire fields

clear ferry
#

Well generative AI is a subset of ML to be fair

deft pewter
#

If we're going to be absolutely honest, there's no intelligence in anything we've seen so far. The tools possess no ability to reason. Just like the AI bubble in the 80's, we're just talking about some hyped up algorithms.

#

It's being sold to the masses as intelligence because they know no better.

clear ferry
#

Yes, AI is a great way to market your products existing algorithms as "new"

#

Best regards, someone who works with this bullshit

#

I see great usage for ML to ease coalition of logs and root cause

#

We've been doing that for many years already on Internet facing storage systems

deft pewter
#

It's almost as if regression and classification is the best use of "AI". And none of that requires opening new nuclear power plants to keep up with the ridiculous energy demands.

clear ferry
#

To be fair most of the people who are afraid of losing their jobs to AI should already have been replaced or moved on

#

Which is also an interesting discussion with the plebs

glacial knot
#

yea, sometimes the claim to intelligence is really an indicator of some people, not the AI

clear ferry
#

Looking at how the hidden layers work in the neural network can make you think there is intelligence behind it

#

However it is either an hallucination or your algorithm is just good for the data

#

Reminds me, I should probably do some Nvidia certs soon

primal laurel
#

current architectures are not going to get us to general intelligence

#

for that I am betting on Karl Friston's work

#

but that's still more theoretical at the moment

clear ferry
#

General intelligence is probably 10 years out

#

Or more

#

I'd be on the plus side

AGI will arrive around the same time as cold fusion.

Probably fourty years later since it needs to be approved by the EU

In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter whether we have AGI or not

Man screw DHL, I need to rant. Ordered the Voice PE on launch night and even picked the expensive fast tracked delivery. Its now been in the one location since the 21st and zero updates, pihut said there are delivery delays. I understandd its christmas but 12 days with such little updates drives me mad

forest edge
#

well keep this in mind for next year

#

cause it won't improve

lucid atlas
#

DHL is a mess, mainly because there are several companies under the same brand (DHL Express, DHL Freight, DHL Parcel etc). Your parcel is often handed between these companies without your knowledge, especially when the order is not domestic. And these sub-companies almost don't talk to each other at all, they are completely separated and there is a lot of competition/hard feelings between them.

clear timber
#

its a joke to charge express and then just not update

#

was really excited for the Voice PE but alas still dont have it

static schooner
#

you'd think they'd be good with their flying trucks

lucid atlas

It's often not the flight (actual dhl express) that is the bottle neck but rather sorting terminals and trucks driving to and from them.

clear timber
#

brexit has made it twice as shitty here too

iron granite
#

The package arrived and the routing itself was not effected.

solar zealot
#

The shipment volume is incredibly elevated during these vacations (as usually). They can't make your stuff faster than any other similarly prioritized item

#

There are no special routes or additional infrastructure for such shipments

lucid atlas
# iron granite I had a DHL package, for which they lost the sender's and recipient's details in...

I raise you - I have a lot of contact with them through work (ecommerce). Once they had in some way mixed up our warehouse information with my personal information.

So one day I got a notification that I had a parcel to pick up from the logistics centre in town. But I had 50+ notifications. Probably some bug, right? The next day I had 200 notifications. And the next day...

Turns out all return parcels had been adressed to me personally instead of our warehouse. And the local post office could not change it without my showing my id. So I had to pick them all up myself and drive them to our warehouse.

Apparently they got all this from me signing up for a dev account at their site, and somehow my information from there ended up on all our return parcels from Germany...

clear timber
#

I get that its delayed and may be due to increased volumes but there is no communication, just an update 10 days ago that says processing. its a shit service when you pay for pakit plus and get nothing.

solar zealot
#

This can always happen considering logistics at scale are pretty much parcel magic

clear timber

I did and they sent me to the pihut which makes no sense as they are the ones with the parcel but in my opinion if they cant provide the paid for service there should be a refund for said service.

You can't even get a refund for the package returning to the sender if they consider the address not to be found

solar zealot
#

They may deliver multiple times a week but from time to time locations just disappear in singularities once delivery trucks show up

lucid atlas
#

There can also be fuckups from the company you bought from, most common is probably that they dont manage to print your adress in a proper way (often due to DHLs stupid api limitations ๐Ÿ™‚ ). This is often solved for a fee from DHL to the company, but with longer lead times. Or they just have to return it.

But you probably ordered at the most inconvient time. Give it some days and it will surely arrive.

I am sure there is nothing important wrong with Tado, but they just sent me an energy savings report that seems like complete nonsense, and to me it hurts the credibility of the brand

#

Somehow they were able to determine that I saved 42.3% of energy (weirdly precise) this month, presumably comparing itself against some unreasonably bad, hypothetical alternative

#

It has NO way of knowing how I used my heating before I got it

#

But even if it just had to guess, whatever guess allowed it to come up with "42.3%" seems totally unreasonable

runic cape
#

Tado also does a thing called weather adaptation, which I don't fully understand. Seems like a solution in search of a problem. Thermostats are not complicated. Cold? turn up heat. Hot? Turn down heat

#

Is it somehow anticipating it will get hot due to the weather and like... shutting the heat off ahead of time?

#

in the winter?

primal laurel
runic cape
#

Let's start with short xD

#

On Tado specifically?

primal laurel
#

buildings store heat naturally. By monitoring the weather you can anticipate interior temperature drops before they occur

#

it takes a while for the cold weather to 'propagate' inside

runic cape
#

But what is the value in anticipating it? Is it just... having the delay in the heating system itself overlap the delay in the house's thermal mass changing temperature?

solar zealot
#

Potentially more gradual temp changes as opposed to having the mass cool down and heat up repeatedly

runic cape
#

also it specifically claims that it has 7 hours of this weather adaptation, specifying "temperature adjusted due to sunshine"

primal laurel
#

there's various flavors of this stuff

#

the most simple one is to just have a temperature sensor outside, in addition to your own thermostat

runic cape
#

My heater itself, that Tado interfaces with, might have that

primal laurel
#

external controls are always going to be much more limited than whatever runs on the heater itself

runic cape
#

doesn't stop Tado from taking credit

primal laurel

doesn't all tado's stuff run 100% in the cloud?

Has anyone moved from ond machine to another, home assistant, esphome, mosquitto and zigbee2mqtt?

In my notes, I made a dummy config file for z2m, for my first box, but I guess that would now want to be the conf file from my current box, otherwise it will have the wrong key and no devices? Or do you just do that, then import the config backup? (I assume this is how to do home assistant best (import a backup))

Or is there a better channel to ask in?

Are you just thinking I should "copy" off the old box and plonk them on the new one?

Not sure what the options are, I go in via ssh, I would imagine I could copy and paste them via external storage, setting up file storage might be a very long winded way

fringe dagger

all the communication with the door button and stuff is encrypted

forest edge

the shelly 1 is a dry contact

fringe dagger

but the garage door button on a security 2.0 garage is not

forest edge
#

dunno what to tell you. mines been in service for a few years now

fringe dagger
#

is your garage security 2.0 equipped?

forest edge
#

yes, in fact I have two since I have one on my mothers garage door

#

the laser ratgdo I kind of understand cause you get that added feature

fringe dagger
#

are you positive they are security 2.0? before the ratgdo people came up with some crazy shit to get it to work

#

e.g. people who used smart relays would have to solder to the button contacts in the security 2.0 wall controller

#

and even then it was a bit of work to get it to work stable, its a low voltage enough connection that it was pretty hard to wire it to a relay without it thinking the button has been pushed randomly

#

the other solution was a switchbot and a tilt sensor lol

#

i just went and checked mine. there is literally nowhere to connect dry contacts

forest edge
#

I do see guides where some people have to use an extra remote

#

wonder if its a brand thing

ocean oar
#

I have seen a lot of pictures of decapitated wireless remotes with wires soldered to the button contacts

forest edge
fringe dagger

I do, but it's not dry contacts

forest edge
#

why would the hard wire button need that? lol

ocean oar
#

"security"

#

Not your security, mind. The security of their recurring monthly subscription payments.

forest edge
#

my wall button has the ability to turn on the garage light etc etc so it's not just a dry contact either

fringe dagger
#

Then how on earth would a Shelly help

#

How would you even wire it

#

Point is a Shelly toggles dry contacts

#

Security 2.0 units do not support dry contact controllers

#

So it can't work

#

Have to use a dedicated device with a micro controller programmed to speak security 2.0

forest edge
#

I admit my garage opener here at the house is probably like one of the first gens of the new 2.0 crap but my mothers garage opener is only 5 years old and it works just as well

#

I even utilized the shelly's gpios so I could have two wired contact sensors

#

maybe they changed shit again if yours is newer than 5 years

fringe dagger
#

Then it's not security 2.0, it never supported dry contacts. We're talking about chamberlains security 2.0 equipped garage door openers. The entire point of security 2.0 is that you can't do exactly what you're describing

forest edge
#

yellow learn buttons

#

all i know lol

#

there you go

#

that + shelly 1 would still be cheaper

forest edge
#

00f using the forum format and trying to format a post using pictures is horrible

#

least for desktop

fringe dagger
#

This is the technique I was talking about where you tap into the button contacts in a real one. People had a hard time making this work reliably but assuming they got it working reliably you'd still only have control of opening and closing the garage so you'd need a tilt sensor and some software to tie it all together, you'd have to either forgo access to the safety sensors or do something there as well, you wouldn't have the control daisy chaining like you get with the ratgdo so you'd have to downgrade the wall controller to the button

#

So I guess if doing all that work and losing some control and downgrading your wall controller is worth it to save a tiny bit of money by using a tilt sensor and a Shelly and this then sure

forest edge
#

how does the ratgdo determine door position?

fringe dagger
#

It can access that information via security 2.0

forest edge
#

myq

#

wait even myq required a sensor

fringe dagger
#

No it didn't, it talks to the opener which knows it's position

forest edge
#

there must be a switch on the rail that it closes when the door is opened

#

it's not like it's "smart", it's using the same methods as shelly uses just more compact and no access to the user

ocean oar
#

I assumed most openers would have a stepper motor and known "top" and "bottom" positions; certainly when I factory reset mine I had to manually reset the limits

fringe dagger
#

Even if it needed a sensor, the ratgdo can tap into the one that's already there

#

The zombified remote method requires a second sensor

ocean oar
#

There are definitely no (external) limit switches on mine, but it slows down smoothly over the last ~5% of its travel instead of coming to a hard stop, so it definitely knows exactly where the bottom is

#

That's why I assume it must be a stepper motor, aiming for a known location

forest edge
#

sounds like more bells and whistles to break lol

fringe dagger
#

I think most people would rather spend slightly more on a single thing that they can just hook up and have a garage sensor in home assistant then save a few bucks and have a bunch of devices working together that have to be combined

#

And downgrade their button they already have lol

forest edge
#

its not a bunch of devices

#

it's one device

#

doing all lol

#

70+ for something that just opens and closes the door and does nothing else is high to me

#

been nice if they added the ability to add additional sensors on the ratgdo at least

#

like i get temp reading, i monitor multiple door states

fringe dagger
#

It's only $45 and it also can do all the sensors that the garage already has

#

Your solution requires at minimum a separate tilt sensor a button replacement and a Shelly

#

This would achieve the same result plus access to the safety sensors and such, without replacing the button, and without an additional sensor

#

For $45

forest edge
#

well as I said, I didn't have to use that thing I linked above for mine

#

I just needed the shelly, 2 wired contacts and the temp sensor

fringe dagger
#

Then it's not security 2.0

forest edge
#

whatever

fringe dagger
#

There are no wire contacts to hook a Shelly up to

#

They'd have to be dry contacts

#

Which don't exist on a security 2.0 opener

forest edge
#

I need to switch mine to a uni so I can use the door trip sensor to use in automations

nocturne sierra
#

Yeah the security+ 2.0 openers use proprietary rolling codes to send commands along the wire to the opener. The guy who developed the ratgdo reverse engineered all that stuff to make it work.

forest edge
#

is there a security 2.0 and a security+ 2.0?

#

cause I assumed all the ones with yellow or even maybe the orange learn buttons were the 2.0

fringe dagger
#

Yes but neither have dry contacts

forest edge
#

all I see is every door opener manufactured after 2013 was the security 2.0

#

which both of mine were

After 2013 by a specific brand within specific lineups

tbh I think it's like this. PIR for the first motion โ€“ and here is the downside of PIR alone: if you stand still no motion is detected โ€“ but if you just trigger the mmwave to take over and let it decide when there is no motion/detection anymore to end the detection process

stuck anchor
# ancient vigil hey, i was wondering, what's the best sensor for automatic lighting in restroom ...

i use a sonoff snzb-03 motion sensor. some people complain that it has too long cooldown. when detecting motion it will snooze for 1 minute before checking again. but i think that is great. you want that first movement to be detected quickly, but you don't want to flood your zigbee network with motion messages.

in general motion/pir sensors are quicker to detect someone entering than radar/mmwave detectors.

when motion is detected my automation starts a countdown timer and turns on the light.

when timer reaches 0 it triggers another automation and the lights are turned off.

my default timer is 10 minutes. whenever motion is detected the automation will restart the timer. so you would have to sit perfectly still for 10 minutes for the lights to go out while you sit there.

Did the tour at Ardbeg, got stuck in the peat bog at Laphroiag planting my flag on "my" square foot of it, and it was raining by the time we got to Lagavulin so I bought a wallet at the gift shop and left it at that

Sadly Lagavullin was closed when I was there. I did do Ardbeg, Bowmore, Laphroaig, and Bruichladdich. As I was travelling alone I ended up nattering to the barman in the posh hotel in Bowmore. Someone in the restaurant ordered the most expensive whisky on the menu, so he let me get my nose in while the stopper was off. This was 2014, and it was a 36-year old Jura, apparently the barrel had been "preserved" during one of Jura's (many) liquidations over the years, and they were charging ยฃ100/35ml. Now I don't think a whisky would ever be worth that, but I was still smelling new things several minutes later.

Welsh just has weird rules, but they are consistent, once you let W into your life as a vowel it's not too hard. Or at least I settle for "only slightly mangling place names"

The curse of the Anglophone is it doesn't matter how much you like studying languages (and I do) there's no pressure so you forget it all. A* in French and 3 years of Japanese evening classes with native speakers and I can remember about 3 words between them

I think the ultimate test of computer vision and robotics is being able to navigate a crowded supermarket with a cart. It's like driving a car, but people and obstacles are always in your way

ocean oar
#

Without running over the loose children, knocking down the old lady standing right in the middle of the aisle completely blocking it, knocking oranges off the display and grinding them into pulp on the floor, or "other"

#

Or that one person who just can't get it through their thick skull that they should walk down the same side of the aisle as the side of the road you drive on, and fucks up the flow for everyone

If there were no repercussions, I would treat every supermarket trip as a demolition derby

#

Honestly, they just need to offer a "people who know how to behave in public only" shopping night.
No children. No pushchairs. No fucking about.
If you don't have your loyalty card and money out and ready by the time you've stood in the checkout line for the 5 minutes it takes to reach the register, permission revoked.
Blocking the aisle? Revoked.
Wrong side? Revoked.

I did Costco and the supermarket today and it was an exercise in frustration. Everybody blocked everything with their cart, displays littered the aisles, and pushing your cart out of an aisle without looking first.

traffic jams pretty much everywhere. I can usually avoid traffic by getting out of the center aisles, but not today

#

I try really hard not to use a cart there if I can at all avoid it

many times I just stop by the big box collection at the front and grab one

it has all the sample stations that both block the aisle and people linger there with their carts that further block the area

A lot of NZ would be good too. Roads designed by city planners in the UK with zero consideration for the terrain. So you ended up with roads that are (generously) 3.5 cars wide, but have parking on both sides, and are bus routes ๐Ÿ˜„

#

And hilariously I just blindly picked a location for the street view marker, and there's a big-ass truck up ahead

why is there parking on that road? so bizzarre

unless your device that's providing the power (switch or whatever) is "managed" and has logging that you can review.. it's going to be really hard to tell.. the easiest thing is usually try replacing the cabling

I am not sure where to ask this so figured that I would start here. I have been running ha backups for a long time with the native feature and the samba backup addon. I see the new backup features in 25.1, but when I go to the backup area of ha nothing looks different. What am I missing?

#

Update, it just appeared. No idea why it took so long. Now I have to decide whether to use this new approach.

#

I am leaning towards skipping the native stuff for now as I am uninterested in encryption since it is stored locally.

The imperial unit system is deprecated and your system is currently using us customary. Please update your configuration to use the us customary unit system and reload the core configuration to fix this issue.
what's a valid value for this? i've tried us, i've tried US_CUSTOMARY_SYSTEM, both say invalid when i reload my yaml.

#

i was using unit_system: imperial or something and now it's deprecated.
