Reporting back. Ducking via media_player.set_volume works fine and feels more natural. Won't work for AVR in the lounge though as it only accepts relative volume, not discrete so I'll need to use mute IR code there.

Should be able to do similar ducking with my OSes as well, which should cover any other edge cases like games.

you can also get simple knobs that do 0-10v control as its just a resistor dial; though I have used the 0-10v shelly it does have the advaantage of being able to change the adjustment range (some lights dont even turn on at like 0-12% or so on the range there) so you can set that as the minimum for 'on' and then have granular adjustability inside that; and etc
