no shit? why it take this long?

lone dagger
forest edge
#

"so that's why noone was using them!"

grizzled gull
#

I agree on making scripts, heck you can even make scripts for each event and just call it when you want too(christmas light) (football light)(Turkey Day lights) etc etc, then you're only changing the scripts....

lone dagger
#

I couldn’t figure scenes out reading the docs and nothing in product helps so I gave up. Until Franck explained them during a call last week because of this release.

ember heart
#

Ok, now this is interesting.. if I take three light bulb entities and put them in a group it makes "one bulb" then it is NOT a group.. it should be called something like "merge lights" not "group lights" then the behavior would make sense as it would merge the lights to make one...?

forest edge
#

how is that not a group?

#

you are grouping multiple together

grizzled gull
#

weak musk
ember heart
#

I guess I don't get how this is so different in haos vs the rest of the eco systems I've worked with. If I snap shot a scene in Hue, then restore that scene, it restores each light to its previous state..

lone dagger
#

Levels, here’s what my husband says about Home Assistant:

Take whatever you know about any other product feature names and forget how they work. Home Assistant should be viewed as a unique thing.

forest edge
#

yea cause those work like someone put each entity into a script and called them seperatly with light_on

#

thats exactly how tplink does it

#

you just don't see the background lol

ember heart
#

No, they work as a group since if they called the sperately you would get the "popcorn" effect of lights oming on at different times.

forest edge
#

so anyways back to them fixing scenes

glacial knot
forest edge
#

I remember when scenes was released. it was confusing AF right out of the gate on how they worked.. on paper tho they sounded awesome

ember heart
glacial knot
#

ohh, if the group is the member that makes sense with how HA behaves
still slightly silly

forest edge
#

all I remember is trying to edit a scene and seeing the previous enityb light added go from the color it was suppose to be to the color it was currently at that point in time and getting frustrated lol

weak musk
#

Levels That only happens if you’re using the light group in the scene though not if you have the 3 individual lights in the scene

ember heart
#

at the moment, the work around is to scene create each individual bulb.. which makes editing tough if you change a bulb you have to go change every automatin that had a scene crate in it and replace that member.. I was using groups and now I find it doesn't work that way 😛

grizzled gull
#

No!

forest edge
#

you have to like reset up every light in it to what you want prior to even clicking the edit button lol

grizzled gull
#

You can keep your group, it can turn the lights all on to max brightness and the same color temp, but when it goes back to the previous you can call a script to change it whatever you want(christmas lights)

forest edge
#

sorry hun, i need to change this one light color to a slightly dimmer color.. nevermind the rest of the house looking like an 80's disco

ember heart
lone dagger
#

I use groups to only control on and off of lights in an area. Like, the lights in my mud room fixture are a group for my automation.

My S.O. likes to "paint" with the lights in the living room and this is gunna allow simple setup of complex light colors across large group of bulbs.. COOL!!

#

She was not really very happy when I took out the hue hub and went to zigbeetomqtt ¯_(ツ)_/¯ she's gunna love this!

forest edge
#

just be careful with those dynamic scenes, those don't run on the bulbs themselves but on the machine that hosts HA which can be very taxing from what I learned

#

was sad to see my third reality bulbs didn't allow for custom effects

ember heart
#

It seems to just send a brightness/color value to each bulb .. it doesn't seem to need to continue to send something though..? 🤔

forest edge
#

dynamic is just that.. you can choose for it to loop through colors etc

ember heart
#

I don't see anything on cpu use.. I have been running a dynamic scene on 6 lights in my office for about 15 minutes now... and it doesn't seem like its affecting the cpu use at all..?

#

would I have to have more bulbs invovled b4 I see an impact?

forest edge
#

more bulbs, shorter transition times etc

#

slow changes with few bulbs will be fine, but once you crank up the speed and add more bulbs it will show lol

ember heart
#

good to know... TBH I have WLED for the really crazy moves.. I would expect the bubls to be slow rolling changes over minutes not seconds..

#

now that I have the 6 bulbs at 1 second interval and 1 sec transition cpu is hovering 9/10% instead of 6/7 so yeah.. I can see it would be a problem if I had a BUNCH of bulbs doing a disco 😄

comcast xfinity is such a mess. My approved 3rd party modem wouldn't connect so an agent had to manually activate it. Now the "xfinity bridge" that allows me to use a router won't connect so they have to escalate my issue to advanced tech support.

#

ofc they're the only provider in my area though

#

You'd love this @lone dagger . I'm 3 support calls in and I havent' even gotten to the part where they need to approve my use of multiple zigbee devices

fathom sparrow
#

wdym "approve my use of multiple zigbee devices"

why would that be related to your ISP at all?

lone dagger

Because Comcast is awful.

static schooner

the whole point of Zigbee and ZWave is so that nobody can tell you what to do 🙂

fathom sparrow
#

are they claiming you can't use zigbee because it may interfere?

#

I'm not sure how it would be related to your network at all

#

because it would only be plugged into a device on your network

#

My parents have Hue, and xfinity, which is comcast. They also have the basic router. I set all that up without issues down in floRida

#

i.e. zigbee + comcast

I moved my home server to the cloud, which is why I opted for such a high-speed connection. I don’t even notice it’s not at home anymore. Instead of 2.5 Gbps, I now have 2 Gbps access. And since I’ve upgraded the whole house so that every spot has 2.5 Gbps and the Wi-Fi can handle it, I didn’t want the internet to be the bottleneck.

I could argue with that. I’m sure there are cheaper and more expensive areas in the US, as well as better and worse quality food options. So it’s hard to make direct comparisons.

From a European perspective, my two weeks in America definitely weren’t cheap 😄 I was already shocked by the concept of tipping. 15-18-20%??? So after discovering there's weirdly no paste option for this, I find the "official" method from the microsoft forums - either copy to notepad and then paste back, or do a search and replace to change all = into #, copy and paste, and then replace back...
So I select the cells I want, open the Find and Replace dialog, and just to make sure I click "Find all" to check that it only finds within my selection. It does. Excel-lent!
Except that's ONLY for Find. When you click Find and Replace in the same dialog box the selection is ignored!

but yeah, am defo liking Home Assistant. Especially now I'm running it on my Linux box (but it means I have to use WiFi to get online because the Home Assistant has taken the Ethernet connection)

As for how I've been able to do this... double network switch jank... until I can get myself that unmanaged switch

WAIT A MINUTE! I just saw LaMetric Time on there... I might be able to do full Google Assistant integration with it as a result... and control it from the Google Home... Dang
