Uh my learning or the change? 🤣
"so that's why noone was using them!"
I agree on making scripts, heck you can even make scripts for each event and just call it when you want too(christmas light) (football light)(Turkey Day lights) etc etc, then you're only changing the scripts....
100000000 times this
I couldn’t figure scenes out reading the docs and nothing in product helps so I gave up. Until Franck explained them during a call last week because of this release.
Ok, now this is interesting.. if I take three light bulb entities and put them in a group it makes "one bulb" then it is NOT a group.. it should be called something like "merge lights" not "group lights" then the behavior would make sense as it would merge the lights to make one...?
horse meet water!
Will he drink?
I guess I don't get how this is so different in haos vs the rest of the eco systems I've worked with. If I snap shot a scene in Hue, then restore that scene, it restores each light to its previous state..
Levels, here’s what my husband says about Home Assistant:
Take whatever you know about any other product feature names and forget how they work. Home Assistant should be viewed as a unique thing.
yea cause those work like someone put each entity into a script and called them seperatly with light_on
thats exactly how tplink does it
you just don't see the background lol
No, they work as a group since if they called the sperately you would get the "popcorn" effect of lights oming on at different times.
so anyways back to them fixing scenes
Scenes don't do that in HA???
I've never used them o.0
I remember when scenes was released. it was confusing AF right out of the gate on how they worked.. on paper tho they sounded awesome
No. as an example:
- Make a light group called "Xmas Lights"
- Put three light bulbs in it
- Set the lights to be one Bulb RED one bulb GREEN and one bulb BLUE
- do a scene:create
- do a scene restore
all bulbs turn white
ohh, if the group is the member that makes sense with how HA behaves
still slightly silly
all I remember is trying to edit a scene and seeing the previous enityb light added go from the color it was suppose to be to the color it was currently at that point in time and getting frustrated lol
Levels That only happens if you’re using the light group in the scene though not if you have the 3 individual lights in the scene
at the moment, the work around is to scene create each individual bulb.. which makes editing tough if you change a bulb you have to go change every automatin that had a scene crate in it and replace that member.. I was using groups and now I find it doesn't work that way 😛
No!
you have to like reset up every light in it to what you want prior to even clicking the edit button lol
You can keep your group, it can turn the lights all on to max brightness and the same color temp, but when it goes back to the previous you can call a script to change it whatever you want(christmas lights)
sorry hun, i need to change this one light color to a slightly dimmer color.. nevermind the rest of the house looking like an 80's disco
That might be fun
Thats the thing- I don't know what it was before.. is it game day and the lights were the team colors? Were they dark orange because it is after 10 pm? were they off since it is after midnight?
I use groups to only control on and off of lights in an area. Like, the lights in my mud room fixture are a group for my automation.
I guess you haven't seen the marketing photos that Hue puts out where they paint entire rooms in color palettes that allow you to essentially repaint a room without ever buying paint..
I use them exclusively for the dashboard (as you do it) not in any scripts or automations.
There's a custom component that implements hue-like scenes, @ember heart
It's called scene presets
no, but that does not surprise me.
Oops, It's not in HACS, you have to manually add the repo
I've discovered a new favorite color, orange LED strip around my projector screen on a red wall, its oddly satisfying
My city is hilarious sometimes.
oh! thats cool! I did miss the very well designed scenes from hue! Thx! 👍🙂
Missy,
I can’t say any of those names out loud without giggling.
No Snowplowy McSnowplowface?
I guess if I put all the scenes in place and then just never set a light color in an automation that might be another way around this.. 🤔
Why are we 2 years too late???

@weary cove there's your plowy mcplowface
WOW WELL everyone should read them out loud at least once. It’ll make you smile.
if they are not marking these plows with those names on the side.. it's all a waste
Dolly Plowton sounds like a porno lol
(installing that scene thingy as I want my hue palletes back! 😁😂🤣 )
That would be Dolly Plowtown!
hot damn! those presets are AWESOME! 😁 👍🙂

even has a whole line of preset for holiday/xmas... NICE
Now I know what I'll use when my philips sconce lights by the front door finally work with z2m 😄
My S.O. likes to "paint" with the lights in the living room and this is gunna allow simple setup of complex light colors across large group of bulbs.. COOL!!
She was not really very happy when I took out the hue hub and went to zigbeetomqtt ¯_(ツ)_/¯ she's gunna love this!
just be careful with those dynamic scenes, those don't run on the bulbs themselves but on the machine that hosts HA which can be very taxing from what I learned
was sad to see my third reality bulbs didn't allow for custom effects
It seems to just send a brightness/color value to each bulb .. it doesn't seem to need to continue to send something though..? 🤔
dynamic is just that.. you can choose for it to loop through colors etc
I don't see anything on cpu use.. I have been running a dynamic scene on 6 lights in my office for about 15 minutes now... and it doesn't seem like its affecting the cpu use at all..?
would I have to have more bulbs invovled b4 I see an impact?
more bulbs, shorter transition times etc
slow changes with few bulbs will be fine, but once you crank up the speed and add more bulbs it will show lol
good to know... TBH I have WLED for the really crazy moves.. I would expect the bubls to be slow rolling changes over minutes not seconds..
now that I have the 6 bulbs at 1 second interval and 1 sec transition cpu is hovering 9/10% instead of 6/7 so yeah.. I can see it would be a problem if I had a BUNCH of bulbs doing a disco 😄
Lol my i2s dac is being cheeck. Left channel works, right channel works stereo or mono: right channel only lol

People still use Facebook?
People are used by Facebook
People are abused by Facebook
Is nabu a european company or american? I know there's a bunch of europeans working in it. Was wondering how the shipping fees are for their devices. Curious about their upcoming voice hardware
(II know there's no support here was just wondering about people's experience with other HA-made hardware)
shipping to where?
Romania specifically, mentioned just eu as generally the shipping prices to whichever country are pretty similar
But the address line on the website looks suspiciously american to me
© Nabu Casa, Inc. - 15 Hubble Suite 200, Irvine, CA 92618
hopefully some retailer will bring it here without charging double the price for it. A pi zero 2 w here is about 30 bucks but it's out of stock everywhere exceptt stores that have it priced at $200 lol https://www.robofun.ro/platforme-de-dezvoltare/raspberry-pi-zero-w.html
oh my god thats not even a 2 w its a normal zero w
The answer for shipping fees always depends on where you buy from - Nabu Casa don't sell directly after all
Our distributors are world wide. You should be able to find a retailer without issue for Romania. 😎
So I was reading through the Open Home Foundation website to find the nonprofit information to donate (inspired by DuckDuckGo) and I didn’t see anything. It suggests a Nabu Casa subscription instead. The thing is, I can’t have my employer match that because it’s not a nonprofit.
Does anyone know how to make a direct donation?
Donations are generally only possible for larger (5+ digits) amounts
If so, you can contact them through their official channels which I suppose means writing them an email
Thank you for the quick reply! Excited for the launch stream
Still no direct way for regular people to donate. Right now, the only ones accepted are large donations (so if you have like 10k).
Donation funding models are really hard to keep consistent.
Ah. I’ve got $2k with the match.
That’d be generous! I wish we had something set up for y’all, I have been trying to figure out ways to do this that’ll stick.
Well, I get it annually. So maybe next year!
Get 5 co-workers together instead?
Does anyone have a way to get ahold of the maintainer for aioecowitt - @light nest ? 🙂 This PR has been waiting since Oct 23 and would hopefully resolve gbs of log spam for ecowitt people 🙂 https://github.com/home-assistant-libs/aioecowitt/pull/209
Please go and re-read #rules and rule #6 about not pinging people to get their attention 😉
Also, PRs get reviewed when they're reviewed. The dev docs even mention being patient 😉
Oops sorry! 🙂
tried updating to HAOS 14 and it removed/deactivated my network interfaces. any ideas (or what channel to ask in)?
comcast xfinity is such a mess. My approved 3rd party modem wouldn't connect so an agent had to manually activate it. Now the "xfinity bridge" that allows me to use a router won't connect so they have to escalate my issue to advanced tech support.
ofc they're the only provider in my area though
You'd love this @lone dagger . I'm 3 support calls in and I havent' even gotten to the part where they need to approve my use of multiple zigbee devices
wdym "approve my use of multiple zigbee devices"
why would that be related to your ISP at all?
Because Comcast is awful.
the whole point of Zigbee and ZWave is so that nobody can tell you what to do 🙂
are they claiming you can't use zigbee because it may interfere?
I'm not sure how it would be related to your network at all
because it would only be plugged into a device on your network
My parents have Hue, and xfinity, which is comcast. They also have the basic router. I set all that up without issues down in floRida
i.e. zigbee + comcast
if the isp know what devices you have on your network then i would consider that a network intrusion. its not their concern what you have attached?
Welcome to America.
Well it's not even on the network
yeah, that's what i'm confused about
Zigbee and ZWave are their own networks
how would they even know
You could have it completely not attached to your network, just in your house. How would they know?
Did they say this to you directly or did you tell them "I plan to use zigbee"
because they can't even stop you from using it
if they attempted to block the signal, they would block all your wifi as well
"were sorry but your approved device is your own problem. contact the manufacturer" MF ITS YOUR BRIDGE THATS THE PROBLEM
I am very surprised that y'all have this much faith in the Tier 1 support of Comcast.
They are idiots following a script and will say dumb shit.
they limit the number of connectable devices, im guessing to cut data usage
that's wifi devices, not zigbee
wah!
and still completely nonsense
they count zigbee as wifi. dont ask lol
they literally can't
I'll repeat.
that's what I'm saying
how are they even seeing your zigbee devices?
they can't!
I'm late to this conversaton, but so very confused
they can see the number of connected devices because you cant use your own wifi router or firewall system
tbh I think everyone is at this point.
again that's only wifi!
you would absolutely think so
give them a nice pat on the head and tell them whatever they want to hear
but somehow they know
I guarantee you have a miss conception in this
Zigbee devices only share frequencies... its no different then if your neighbor had 500 wifi devices, comcast couldn't say crap
right
The zigbee bridge will only count as one device, but HA zigbee coordinators will either connect to HA via USB or ethernet
im going through the process rn. i'll let you know once i hit a dozen devices
it's impossible for them to see your zigbee devices
The point of zigbee is it's not internet connected
I think you confused the person you're talking to on the phone
thats like a power company charging you for the power you use from a generator. they cant possibly know
Or power from solar.
unless you use a deadmans cable and shock a line worker when they hook up power 😛
Or heat from the sun
no i just asked them to connect my wifi router to my modem today. they said they couldnt open the bridge mode and i have to check my modem
zigbee will only ever show up as 1 device on your network. It will show up as the bridge thats connecting to all your zigbee devices, that's it.
well there is that, but thats a different story 😛
and the bridge I'm talking about is not the same as whatever you're saying with "bridge mode"
oh i just talking about their wifi router "bridge" mode. the thing that lets your modem assign IPs im guessing
For those of you who don't know what a deadmans power cord is, its a cord with 2 male ends people will hook up their house to their generator in case of power outages, but it can back feed into the mains if you don't pull your main breaker
Learn how to use your own router in combination with an Xfinity Wireless Gateway.
Ok, so I literally just set up 3 weeks ago a zigbee network on that same router
so what you're asaying is 100% off base
If you're using bridge mode then you need your own router, the modem just acts as a modem only
Thats why they cannot help you
cant access 10.0.0.1 for their admin tool. cant access 192.168.100.1 for the modem settings
i have my own modem and router. CODA56 and unifi ap
an AP is not a router
did i just make a major noob mistake lol
alright, so to recap, your comment here
approve my use of multiple zigbee devices
Is off base, you don't need approval for anything
i still cant access 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.100.1. My IP and host are within normal ranges. i dont understand subnet stuff but its on autoconfig
or... "We collectively approve of your use of any number of Zigbee devices" 🙂
https://www.amazon.com/Hitron-CODA56-Multi-Gigabit-Certified-Spectrum/dp/B0BKZ4DHNL?th=1 is just modem, you need a router
i thought the Unifi AP acted as a wifi router. i def messed that up. Still cant figure out why I cant access admin settings through comcast or hitron though
Have you connected a ethernet cable to your modem to your computer? It SHOULD be able to grab a DHCP
it will also expose your pc to all random incoming requests
I was just thinking that
it all looks normal
Just go to the store and buy a 20 dollar router for now lol
can i change that?
get a router
And with that I'm headed to lunch
I mean do you really think someone is actively trying at this moment to access this random person’s network devices?
Missy if you saw the amount of random requests that hit my firewall you'd be amazed
yeah ill run over to microcenter after work
yup
ok, routers and APs are different. i think i may need to watch some home networking 101 videos on youtube
wtf are y’all doing that you’re getting random requests lol
do you have a spare PC with 2 network cards? you could install opnsense on it and make your own router
lol I’m sure you’re getting them too
everyone is constantly getting scanned
Michael, he didn't know the difference between a router and a AP, do you really think setting up opensense would be a workable soluation 🙂
this is a fair point and well made
on a totally different convesation I can't access microcenter it tells me forbiden
I’ve never seen requests myself, but also I haven’t looked in ages.
Which is odd because my work computer via VPN works just fine lol
So, did you buy the AP because you thought you'd hit a device limit with zigbee? If yes, just remove the AP for now and try to set this up without it. Your Zigbee bridge will only be 1 additional device on your network. And if you already have HA, then it will be 0 additioinal devices
no, i bought my own modem this week to prevent the monthly fee. im just getting connected to the internet right now. the issues were with the xfinity gateway modems
Modem is different than ap
ah ok, so if you got the modem, you need a router
You'll need a modem, router, and access point
most routers have built in access points
yeah i think imma grab the UI dream router. built in PoE is nice https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/udr?s=us&l=en
Yes, my sister has that
it's nice
and it's easy, however I manage it
Often times a "router" is a switch, modem AP and phone station all in one.
Yep, that's what the Dream Router is that he linked
while you're waiting youl coudl get https://www.microcenter.com/product/632419/tp-link-archer-ax1500-wifi-6-smart-wifi-router until your dream arives
xfinity has the UCI as an approved modem. its significantly more expensive than the hitron coda56 but it would make networking easy https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/internet-solutions/collections/pro-internet-solutions/products/uci
You don't need that, that's a modem
you need a router
yeah i mean return the hitron and go all UI
why!
I'd keep your modem
there is 0 networking between your modem and router
I ran a motorola modem + unifi router for years
yeah ill keep the modem. i just like the UI software
plug cable in wan port on router and modem and turn them both on
now I have one of those modems for fiber, OAR or whatever they are called
theres definetly an arguement for just paying the isp the money and using their equipment at this point. if you dont know enough networking equipment to get to this point then its likely you will have other issues and they wont be able to help. plus how much is the fee and how many months are you looking at to recoop the cost of a >$200 of networking equipment
xfinity offers a whopping 4 modem choices lol

The problem with comcrap stuff is they also share your internet
they charge 20 a month
have guest wifi that you can't turn off and takes up frequencies
240 per year is unbelievable for a crappy modem/router combo
Yah, just keep your modem, buy the dream machine and be done with it
that's robbery
That's comcast
it's $300 for the dream machine and the interface is friendly, there's plenty of videos on the web that specifically use Unifi
Theres's a reason I am still on 120mbit dsl
the price tag is high, but you'll have alot of resources to use as a beginner
thanks, i def made a beginner mistake on this one
the only other internet option in my area was fios 5g. comcast has an effective monopoly on broadband in philly
thats why they have a stadium named after them
my 120mbit dsl is uncapped, is 60 bucks a month, no equipment charges, only thing I ever would struggle with is playing FS2024
You won't be disappointed with Unifi unless you run into issues. I've only ran into issues with their older equipment
I have 300mbit uncapped for 70/month also no equipment charges.
500 up/down 50/mo, no equipment
lucky, if we get fiber here it would be 65 uncapped
1000mbit
but I'm stuck in an old centurylink qwest area they don't want to put money into
I think I can get 1000 for 80/mo
only reason I even have 120mbit is because its fiber to the dslam
ah
The municipal fiber in the town nextdoor offers 2gig symmetrical for 100 which is absurd
Yeah, that's basically what I'm on
I'll be totally honest, I work from home with 120mbit/10 up and its just fine, only person who complains is my kid when game updates take to long
not the speeds, but that type of situation
dream machine is sold out in a lot of spots. i wonder if its supply chain or theyre making a new model
he can go touch grass!
do you already have the access point?
i still have the U6, didnt return it yet
my experience in dealing with unifi devices was quite bad 😂
it went a bit like this
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1adl57p/u6lr_very_high_failure_rate/
You could shell out 80 more for https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/all-unifi-cloud-gateways/products/udm-pro
if you already have the AP
My parents have that
at their cottage
they "work". until a client connects to them. then they crash and "work" again 😂
i have a small 1 bedroom apt. i dont need much in terms of reach or total devices
Then return the AP and wait for the dream machine to come in
I've never had any of those issues
found it here. it should be here in 1-2 days https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1519029-REG/ubiquiti_networks_udm_us_unifi_dream_machine.html
the devices in question were > 26 months old, no return possible. bad luck
then again, I don't have u6-LRs
bhphoto is a good site, I buy from them regularly
I have an U6-Lite, that's the newest AP I own
i buy my camera gear and rentals from adorama, but their site says it ships from the manufacturer, and the UI site says they're out of stock
Thats why i use linux with iptables
I stay away from unifi, works pretty well for me
adorama has always been great with customer service. tons of good experiences with them
i have a u6-pro and very happy with it. dont have any other ubiquiti stuff though
saved my ass several times when i forgot something on a shoot
I've heard there's issues with the 7s
i saw something about them getting a bit hotter then people expected but not much else
thanks for helping everyone. not easy being new to home networking lol. im running back to work so ill ttyl
good luck
out of interest, does anyone else randomly get failed login attempt notifications from their mobile device?
the phone works fine with android companion app etc... but randomly with no pattern i can see i get these alerts
its one of those things thats not quite right but it hasnt really annoyed me enough to put time into trying to fix it. specially as its a random occurrence
interesting mine is i would say, "most days but not every day"
well it does say MK-phone... 😛
you assumed I read it fully 🤣
I've had that happen on the mobile app sometimes.
Just a wild guess, the app was suspended by the OS and when launched back up it tries to use an expired short-lived access token or something.
App does a full refresh, logs in successfully, I get that notification and ignore it.
I swear one day someone will be actually trying to hack my install and I'd just be ... meh.
Oh my God, the internet is so expensive in America. Here it's €20/month for 2/1 Gbps.
welcome to bend over and take it America, millionares need to be billionares
Try €8 for 1000/1000 FTTH 🙂
Edit: I double checked the fine print, it's 940 down / 450 up... damn. I've been living a lie.
Well, at least here you get the speed 🙂 The 1/1 isn’t as cheap as over there, but you can get it for €12.
More than enough for any home / SOHO use
$50 for 1000/1000 ftth here
Or $70 to go to 2000/2000
At least it's come down in price lately, right?
yeah no
Give it a couple years it’s gonna get way worse
They’re talking about reducing net neutrality or reversing it I think
The crony capitalism is likely to get much worse in the near future
Does that affect the ISP's or the content providers more though
I've heard some noise about that... it seems crazy to me.
I always thought it affect content providers more(netflix, google etc)
They mentioned data caps again too idk
I just expect the future to at least suck as bad as the present
I can see the side of the arugment about making content providers pay for access to end leg though if they are using the majority of teh bandwidth
Comcrap and most cable providers already have data caps, you can pay 30 bucks more a month and get them waved though
I believe spectrum doesn't but that was a merger conditon that's about to expire
Data caps on wired? Like... monthly total usage caps?
I still laugh whenever I hear the word data caps, it's just absurd for consumer grade
before they start charging you more, yes
I moved my home server to the cloud, which is why I opted for such a high-speed connection. I don’t even notice it’s not at home anymore. Instead of 2.5 Gbps, I now have 2 Gbps access. And since I’ve upgraded the whole house so that every spot has 2.5 Gbps and the Wi-Fi can handle it, I didn’t want the internet to be the bottleneck.
Thankfully we haven't had it since 1999, and it only lasted 6 months
It makes 0 sense as they're paying for bandwidth themselves...
oh yeah that makes sense, that is probably it
The arugment they make is the majority of the bandwidth is used my a minority of the people(this was true 10 years ago, but with streaming it makes no sense anymroe)
its my phone yeah
They don't have minimum speed guarantees anyway, I bet. How my ISP solves it is just... have slow internet in times of high usage. Want a guaranteed min speed? Then you pay 30-50 eur, but it's for guaranteed bandwidth. Not monthly usage. Still,
I will say this though, having traveled globally, while our internet is expensive in the US, our estentials other then that are cheaper, so it works out it still cheaper to live here
i think its probably still statistically true but not to the extreme it used to be
Food, energy, housing is all generally cheaper in the US
Tax's are lower, but health care and higher education suck
I gladly pay 60 dollars for internet, but only pay 150 dollars a month to heat my home in Minnesota, or 15 cents a kh/w for electricity
Besides energy, is it really cheaper than let's say Europe?
$1.48/L, IDK in freedom units
Edit: $5.6/us gal
But this is after COVID + war.
$0.17/kWh so 17 cents?
Buuut, I don't need to use my car to pick up a tic-tac 🙂
I could argue with that. I’m sure there are cheaper and more expensive areas in the US, as well as better and worse quality food options. So it’s hard to make direct comparisons.
From a European perspective, my two weeks in America definitely weren’t cheap 😄 I was already shocked by the concept of tipping. 15-18-20%??? What are they talking about, especially at self-service places? And if I tried to find food that didn’t contain ingredients banned in the EU, the prices immediately doubled.
I forgot about the tipping culture!
you can always just choose not to 🙂
I don't tip unless i get actual serivce, AKA sit down, no coffee shops, no take out etc
And can you eat there a second time after?
Sure why not
My buddy married someone from italy, She lives in the US and refuses to tip! It's a general problem when we go out. We have to sneak the servers tips
lol
the old "bills in the handshake" move 🙂
What’s expensive in the EU is driving, and very much so! But in exchange, a person can go their entire life without a car here.
I'm only basing my perception of the US on what amounts to memes, so please don't take me too seriously.
I'm sure Europe is similar to the US where the big tourist area's are more expensive
Oh yeah, we all fat, ride buggies in walmart, and drive lifted trucks
ofc.
Especially you.
Just the worst of us.
I walk in walmart, thank you very much
uhhhhh ummmmm I don't shop at Walmart...
burn!
Ok, not quite that kind of memes
Nice clarification.
Neither do I lol.
I will admit I have a jeep on 38" tires that I use once in a while as a people mover when our family vehicles are unavailable.....
And run HA supervised!
WE ALL HAVE OUR FAULTS
I'll sit on you
I didn't start this... I didn't start this...
So, curious question, are HAOS addon's curated? Or is it like running dockers else where where the update just shows up when the repo is updated?
ooh err missus
I was thinking fat guy smothering him to death, get your minds out of the gutter

... This used to be a talk about economics 5 minutes ago.
I’m really good at derailing things.
Do I want to?
Chris did you see the discussion of snow plow names yesterday?
No, I didn't 🤔
As a european , when in the US visiting a Walmart is a must !
For the over the counter drugs and 20gal ketchup bottles, yes
Ah, actual names for snow plow vehicles. Like snowy mcplowface
I’m sure all that gold will start trickling down any day now in a veritable shower
No complimentary sidearm at customs?
And I miss the Toys 'r Us from 30 years ago ...
have you ever went to one of those on black friday?
here is was an absolute nightmare
more so than other stores cause it was packed with parents trying to do xmas shopping and they would get brutal
No , but seeing a toy store with caddies was surprising
The kid in me was very excited ... It must have been a parents hell
Should I be removing the HACS music assistant integration after 2024.12? Is the official integration a complete replacement?
The real American experience is getting into a fight in a Denny's parking lot at 2am
Rip toys r Us, but at least fao Schwarz still exists
Nooo Waffle House is where its at!
We still have Toys R Us in Canada!
Grocery shopping at night is quite strange also ...
I'll have to go to one next time I go up north then!
At 2 am there was us buying stuff we didn't have in europe , a cashier , a security guard and a cleaning guy ...
The cashier : why so many chili spice mix ?
Well, I can finally start doing my HA on Linux. Ended up using dual network switches (gonna go for a Netgear switch though to replace them), so as a result, having bought an extra Ethernet cable, my Linux box is now Ethernet connected to the network, so hopefully that means I can bridge my internet to HA without breaking everything...
just tuned into the release party and all I can see is this huge dead pixel.. crazy stuff
Hi!
I am new here, i got HA at Uni and during the course i started liking it a lot. I bought myself a NUC pc and i am installing HA in HAOS now, about to get some integrations in my home
HAOS is a good idea right? I had HA on Docker on my pc, but i run into too many problems wiht BT and forwarding i decidet to have dedicated unit for that, do you guys think i made right choice?
HAOS is a great way to deploy HA.
🫡
BT and fowarding, were you running Unraid by any chance?
not sure what that means
If you don't know what it is, then you don't 🙂
HA runing ina container in docker coudn't get BT from adapter thats a USB stick
for me pass through a BT dongle via docker I had to install bluez stack
so i got annoyed and i ordered a NUC
in the host machine
and put -v /var/run/dbus:/run/dbus:ro
But you're better off with a NUC 🙂
If it makes you feel better, I struggled with passing through my USB zigbee adaptor, I just said screw it and went with a network zigbee controller 🙂
i'll buy zigbee once i have sigbee stuff to connect
so far i only want to integrate lights in my apartment, all my devices, and my own Engineering Project with ESPhome (most hyped)
Zigbee is cheap and stable, doesn't take much to get started
FWIW, if you use alexa_media_player you might want to hold the upgrade to 2024.12. There is a bug with some python dependency. I had to restore the backup
AMP continuing its streak of breaking with updates, I see!
It is a tradition!

it's afraid of being replaced by VoicePE and can't handle the stress
you'd think it would step up, but it's crumbling under the pressure
It should more be afraid about its potential core replacement.
wonder if the new python version is gonna wreck pyscript
@forest edge there was another update to the third reality bulbs, not sure what it change, but maybe they read the comments here and added what you wanted 😛
doh! well one can hope
on a totally offtopic note, HEVC is dang efficent, I'm converting PBS recordings of Nova from TS (mpeg2) to HEVC(h265) and is 75-80% smaller
@forest edge thats not the most recent update
what shows in z2m for me
maybe it's just a bug fix since they didn't mention it on the site
My Zigbee coordinator melted down this morning, I am really regretting not having a spare on hand, nothing works 😭
which one
It's a POE cc2562p2
Pretty sure the POE board died and took the rest of it with it
sonoff but you just don't want to say sonoff?
Not sonoff, one of Tubes. He's been amazing, even though he's out of stock and waiting on parts, he's digging through his parts bin to get me a new one ASAP. Sounds like this is maybe the second failure ever, so nothing wrong with them, just happens.
Big lesson is, it's the only portion of the system that I couldn't swap to something else
I have a backup HA Docker container ready to go on another server, just nothing as far as the coordinator
actually over the years I read a lot of melt downs in association with poe so that kind of stuff doesn't shock me regardless what device it's on
Interesting, I've had really good luck with POE, this is the first failure of anything POE
At one time I was even considering powering the rpi via POE
switches, cameras, iot devices.. you name it.. i've read about how it almost burned a house down lol
even rpi's lmao
Given a large enough set, it's eventually going to burn a house down, that's for sure
Really Frigate?
yeah I think I'll need to up that camera
Anyone having problem with 2024.12 version?
nope, still waiting for 2024.12.3/5 to drop
I thought it did? I just did and it seems to break it
I'm currently trying to roll back
Haven't seen major issues
So at this point I recommend upgrading and collecting data
I am sitting on this update for a couple of days waiting for an AMP update. otherwise other people in the house will be annoyed at me. if only i had some other kind of voice hardware that i could replace it with
how do i activate the new dashboard setup/movement of the entities and stuff?
ok
i think you can convert old views too now actually but i havent tried it
Isn't AMP the thing that caused crashes all over the place at one point?
its had some issues to be fair
people too can be eaten by birds too; I see no problem here. /s
or you can throw a year sub at frigate+
get your models/usage out of it.. and then keep the models (you can, and even deploy it on multiple servers but not use the full frigate+ integration; have one setup for someones work+home)
and get better detection overall.
and the other labels of course.. though I do wish they integrated to the frontend and automations easier. 🤔
i see your person, and raise you a dog
The basic model doesn't know about deer
In general, I've had the best luck with 90% confidence or more
But it might not have helped there
yeah I've got a few from inside a textile warehouse that thought rolls were people.
getting the frigate+ model trained wasn't difficult and now..
I use 95%+ with the F+ model and my false +/- are completely gone
vast majority of 'person' is 90%+
I can't remember the last time I got a false detection
really tried to think of a better way to automate an office but just went.. "nah, homeassitant and frigate it is."
controls aisle lights and shit.. turns them off to save electricity as needed.. etc 😄
also converted from bullshit fluorescent to LED's but not quite done with that yet.. still.. damned worth it 😄
a workable solution to almost anything these days is AI and a camera. i am not sure how i feel about it
🤷♂️
I mean.. I don't consider frigate's useful stuff in the same heap as the AI slop thats out there
it runs locally on a damned 4w board.
that's the difference between useful ML and ai slop to me.
hell, the cameras I used for the warehouse had their own onboard person detection; I just didn't like not having it exposed as it should be to me and all so.. frigate is better overall.
nuts what you can get with cheap chinese SOC's these days.
The technology isn’t slop, it’s the product that is
I mean.. the hallucinations make the technology slop
Hallucinations come from either lack of data or overuse of synthetic + being overly reinforced to always respond
good thing they've already stolen everything on the internet and are actively polluting the place now amirite?
good thing the tech can exist without rampant mass theft right?
... wait, no it can't actually? 🤔
It can. I know some folks that introduced a from scratch model to detect cow health for farms worth hundreds of millions
Like I said wrong tree.
Corps did that, a tool is just a tool
and there was no way for existing machine learning to have done that without ai slop?
The very first models were done with completely public domain stuff buddy, you don’t know what you are talking about…
coral TPU has existed since 2019.. chatgpt came out in 2022..
I feel like you don't need generative-ai-bullshit to predict trends.
you need machine learning.
they are two different things.
This is what happens when you get your takes from Twitter and reddit.
don't use either of the cesspools actually, but thanks. 😉
Repeating this one last time: from scratch model to detect cow health, the team took millions of photos of cattle.
Another, shark detection at beaches, from footage from four years of drone patrolling at beaches.
.... and that's not generative ai slop.
Fairly obviously.
Shifting the goalposts.
no, pretty concise line.
I told you earlier the technology is not what makes it slop.
You have shifted them, goodbye, this is like talking to a brick wall that sounds like my father
they're different technologies; at the core.
Good luck with that though.
At the core it's all ML on Nana
Though the network designs are diffy
New Frigate version looks pretty sick
and facial recognition part of 0.16 as well
Does anybody know if you can access Wyze's camera motion sensors if you have a home hub integrated into HA?
Did someone say AI ?
Don't u dare release them from ya basement
Yeah zi fiddled with it at Uni, just i don't have at home anything to integrate with zigbee (YET)
i see the AMP plugin is up to it's tricks again
Those all feel like discussions for #1284965988642590891 . This one's not a support channel.
Same procedure as almost every month.
It's great fun, highly recommend
Oh Microsoft...
I want to copy a bunch of cells with formulas in excel, without the references changing, tight?
So after discovering there's weirdly no paste option for this, I find the "official" method from the microsoft forums - either copy to notepad and then paste back, or do a search and replace to change all = into #, copy and paste, and then replace back...
So I select the cells I want, open the Find and Replace dialog, and just to make sure I click "Find all" to check that it only finds within my selection. It does. Excel-lent!
Except that's ONLY for Find. When you click Find and Replace in the same dialog box the selection is ignored!
Is there like a youtube video on how to use card mod? I am slightly confused on how to make it work. I followed the readme git repository it still doesn't give me a understanding how to use Card Mod for LoveLace.
I'm sure people can help if you ask in #1284965988642590891 - though the forum thread is likely to be another good place
Thank you. Going to ask there.
is the zigbee network visualisation still a thing in ZHA
I really need to pull the plaster off and make a proper dashboard for myself rather than having the default.
Hey everyone, new here just wanted to pop in and say hello. Working on my smart home a lot at the moment. Just wanted to increase my cool factor by showing off my latest addition (I think my flat has a ventilation issue)
Under 1000 seems fine
Would this channel be appropriate for off-topic?
Yes
Do read the channel topic, as always 😉
Finding that on the mobile app is a chore
Discord making dubious design decisions ...
this was just as i had started to air the room out, I've closed a window now and it went from 600 to 1100 in like 15 mins, either way if there's no CO2 issue, it's still reaaaaaaally cool to have on my dashboards
Yeah, definitely good to monitor it in case it goes too high. And you'll definitely see big swings based on open/closed doors/windows. Jus sayin 1000 is perfectly safe.
They reckon over 1000 starts to make you feel sleepy. A few thousand for headaches. And if you hit tens of thousands... run 😂
yeah my main issue is that i've been waking up recently feeling groggy, headaches, nausea and I ruled out a lot of other potential issues, and it seems to have only started during the winter when I have kept the house sealed up, so I want to monitor it closely. I have some window/door sensors too so I can corrolate it to having them open or closed
30% for my health, 70% for the cool tinkerer factor
Tile or Samsung trackers? Haven't had one in hears. Kiddo needs some. He uses Samsung phones and tablets if it matters but whichever is better rn, tile or Samsung or a new alternative if that.
1000 is pretty high, I feel the effects easily around there
My house normally stays around 400-600 and I like that as a comfort zone
The reading will be vastly influenced by a lot of factors about your room and outside air quality
Brain fog and other problems start around 1000 though, best to fix the problem before it gets higher from there
It also harms sleep quality at that point too, it's a reason people are encouraged to sleep with their bedroom doors open, to allow more circulation and prevent CO2 buildup
There is not really a distinct problem that can be fixed about it. You can't really breath less or post install properly efficient outside air systems
As a gamer I have learned to maintain higher order brain functions at co2 of 3000
You know this wasn't an issue 50 years ago when houses actually breathed 😛 That being said even our house which is old is now super tight due to weather wrap and new windows, we have to have a fresh air inlet in our utility room otherwise we get back drafts down the fireplace
Anybody here use Govee products in HA?
Lots of people do
I know, because it's been discussed in #1284966582375813201 a few times in the last week alone
Mechanical ventilation
The point I was making is the air issues we are having is because of how tight houses are, not how to fix it 🙂
That being said, I laugh when I read about people installing 800 CFM hood vents and then having issues with smell through out the house when air is being pulled own chimenys(both fireplace and/or appliance)
Lol our brand new house breaths, the furnace/AC have a fresh air vent it uses to mix in outside air to the return from the house
I'll check there! Thanks!
Steve-O I think the bigger issue is retrofits
What device do you use to measure that? I have a air gradient device that will throw alerts even when I'm not in my home office.
It's currently at 1027... but i've been in and out,.
I'm very tempted to buy https://shop.ecowitt.com/products/wh46-indoor-7-in-1-air-quality-sensor-ndir-co2-pm1-0-pm2-5-pm4-0-pm10-temperature-humidity-sensor I already have an ecowitt setup

I think mine is just running normal? I haven't delved into esp home yet.
I bought Tiles this week
I got the diy kit for mine too
No clue how that will work though
What made u decide
So I did all it (and added a few more sensors too)
Lol fair
We did notice a distinct difference when the CO2 was over 1000, opened windows and almost immediately felt better
With regards to using esp home vs the stock firmware? it was more accurate?
🤷♂️ I never ran the stock firmware
I figure they're both reading the sensors the same, unless the stock has some equations it uses to calculate values based off the readings (like aqi) (though I use iaquk hacs integration for aqi)
Esphome may do some magic depending on the sensor
But i think the ESP home firmware is brewed by the same folk?
Is esp home pretty easy to set up? I have a few extra ESP devices sitting around, and I want to build one of those M5Stack weight sensors.
I think it's pretty easy to use, the only annoying part can be the initial flash, but after that you can get WiFi setup and OTA all the updates afterwards
I use esphome Web from Windows for that initial flash
I've never even come close to that value... are you living in a sealed box? 😄
esphome-cli ftw!
Hello, all. I used to run home assistant a few years ago, then house got hit by a tornado, yada yada. I am just starting a rebuild from scratch, and am trying to "catch up" a little bit with what I used to know about home assistant, but some things have changed and progressed predictably. My first question is, does home assistant have an add on or integration or something which would be either a DNS server or DNS logger? Currently, my home router is serving DNS, but has no logging abilities at all. My goal is to be able to log and examine DNS requests made on my home network so that I can see who/what is going where. Thanks in advance for any guidance.
A few people in a room for a few hours can do that
@frigid panther Adguard or PiHole i believe are both supported in various ways
Thanks, Paradize. I'll look at both. I used to run PiHole, but at the time, it was blocking a lot of things that caused my wife to doubt my networking abilities, lol. So I uninstalled it back then. Maybe it has a "look, don't touch" mode or something.
You can use both PiHole and AdGuard without blocking anything
Thanks, Tink.
does esp home need to hace an additional device set up as a hub? or can I just flash the firmware onto the air gradient and set it up like i did with the stock? Also, there's a stock integration, so what advantage does esp home give over the stock fw? you mentiuod OTA updates
ESPHome doesn't need a hub, no
Home assistant just talks to it natively
You do need a Wi-Fi network though for it to work
I don't think there was an integration when I built my air gradients, or it was through their cloud which was a big no thanks for me, esphome keeps all my data local to my systems
It gave me access to the sensors without any issues and an open source firmware that I controlled rather than someone else controlling
TIL you can click the heading in a graph to make it wider o_O
Pihole isnt a dns server so much as dns ad blocker and does caching + can verify responses. You will want to setup unbound too and hook pihole up to unbound.
Wait what?! Thanks I just tried this and I never knew this
Works with yaml editor for dashboard cards as well (although the window is argubly still to small...) and probably other places as well. Maybe the most hidden feature in the UI?
WTH aren't they expanded from the start 🙂
Oh I knew this but never got the use case
I guess I don't open that many graphs
man this automation code issue I am having is really throwing me for the loop and I can't find anything on the google to help with the error

ya I posted in there
silly question: im good to set up zigbee stuff via ethernet before my router/ap comes in, right? connecting my router for the first time wont mess with my IP or home networking in a way that would affect my NUC?
to talk about use of integrations (in this case, specifically the amazing acaia one, which i think @indigo mural wrote), are there integration specific channels? not about troubleshooting or installing, just about cool uses for them
Why does my logitech mouse have an AI now? Like just stop.
I think it really depends on the subject, tbh. That's what the other community channels are sometimes used for. 🙂
To feed the algorithm
fair. ok, well, if anyone else uses the amazing Acaia integration would love to brainstorm on cool uses. i am irrationally excited at tracking the weight/timing of espresso shots, but also working out how to use it effectively 😁
Thanks for the praise, I'm glad you like it ☺️. I think such discussions (idea sharing) happen more on the community forums than here on Discord.
OOOH coffee fan, okay. Probably #the-kitchen or #home-and-garden - I'd talk about it in either of those myself. :3
Not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the regular home networking router? Zigbee is wireless, how would you setup Zigbee via ethernet?
Will the integration work with the Pearl do you think? I don't remember it being listed but curious if there's a reason why it wouldn't
Zigbee coordinators can be ethernet
The nature of troubleshooting and tech advice.
Try it and let me know. It’s not in the docs because I don’t know, but there was a GitHub issue during the beta which sounded like it does
can I ask a quick question here
no.. only long drawn out questions allowed
i have a file here config/www/tmp/ptz_motion.jpg
^^this is not going to be a quick question
Wait... so there's an entire house in here?
Not just a water cooler in the middle of nowhere? 🤯
(I... omitted to explore)
I feel like I just levelled up and unlocked new areas.
It is no secret: our voice hardware will be revealed on 19 December 2024. Language leaders have already got their hands on the device, and are working extremely hard to polish support for their language.
Oh... interesting... wonder what this will be

Is that going to allow some LLM stuff in said hardware I wonder
i read that as Polish with a big P for a moment. and was wondering about the challenges of the Polish language
Same.
LOL.
https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc75095651/executive whee! 7.0 off the coast near Eureka, CA
LLM stuff is already allowed, you just need to install the integrations for them.
talking of voice, whilst we are waiting for santa to come... AMP is now fixed for those that use it
The hardware doesn't come with anything special in that regard.
But will that hardware be able to do the LLM stuff on its own hardware?
Or will I need external hardware for that still
its an esp32 (i beleive) so lets face it, its not going to be doing anything major
Hmm, so it sounds like I need to upgrade my 3770K machine to an RTX 4090 🤣
the question is, can i replace my families amazon devices without them noticing any different in use?...
There's MicroWakeWord on device, but nothing Large about it. It can manage "I need to start listening now!" all on its own, so highschooler level?
I use my llama3.2 model on my Radeon 6700 XT. So if you are using local definitely need to have some decent hardware. If you are using cloud based LLMs, though, you do not need it.
Basically the same as now without the voice hardware.
I'd be using a local LLM. My main desktop has an RTX 3070 in it, but that's my gsaming rig
my 3770K machine has a GTX 760
Well, technically my streaming rig, but it was bought from a gaming PC builder.
and my secondary desktop (Ryzen 7 5700G) doesn't have a dGPU
hmm... might look into an AI ASIC as well...
i do really should update the gpu in my server to be able to handle messing with llm's but its not high on the wishlist
yeeah thats the side effect i guess
my rack already sits about about 150-160 most of the time
not sure how a big gpu and a llm will effect that
I sit at around 67 on idle, so not too bad. But it goes to 212+ when I engage with the llm.
Wonder how much an AI ASIC would cost me
is that meaningfully different from a GPU?
how often do you engage the llm? i assume its only pretty short spikes?
yes but ASIC has a much narrower focus than GPU
Are there any reasonable options for a consumer on this front?
but for the area where the ASIC is designed for, it significantly outperforms a GPU
I'm expecting the ASIC AI to cost me in the region of £100M for a basic one
Yeah, very short bursts. Right now, I am still in the process of setting up my notifications with it so it's still only triggered when I am testing things. I don't think the bursts would be too bad on daily use once I finalize things, though...
WE SHALL SEE
Oh. oh... a... bit outside my budget.
thing is, I'm a bit stuck for options is all... so I need a separate device for it
you expect it to cost 100 million? Am I reading that right?
I'd say wait a bit more, let the big CPU makers make that investment.
Everyone and their grandma is investing in TPU cores. I have a ~15 TOPS accelerator in my AMD 7840HS, and current/future generations are reaching 50+ TOPS.
That, combined with software efforts of optimizing waste on the models themselves, we'll have something workable and open source soon-ish. 🙂
Not sure why you are being dismissed, I don't think that's the right approach especially towards new users. Seeing it time and time again.
Anyway, if you created the www folder for this instance, you need to restart HA. Have you done it?
The documentation for this can be found here: https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/http/#hosting-files
So my 5700G machine could do it? At least as a temporary measure until I can get specialist hardware for it? (Like for streaming I bought myself an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO
because this isn't a support channel.
So tell him that?
Been told that the GTX 760 with CUDA could do it. Interesting.
i got it working with direct ip and not homeassistatn.local
thanks
It's been said here ad nauseam and is in the channel description.
I just earlier learned there's a #machine-learning community channel that's more fit for this type of chat, I think there's many nuggets of wisdom in that chat history already said. 😁
DOH. Didn't realise that was a channel either
Especially for new (discord) users it's not easy to spot or know of channel topics. Just easier and a better approach to just send them to the correct channel rather than poking fun. Not blaming you too much, it was just an example of something I've seen time and time again which doesnt fit with the initiative of being beginner friendly and all that. But whatever.
Comes with the forum format I think, that people accidentally end up here.
Basically, blame discord.
If you know that this isn't a support channel, instead of helping you could also redirect them. 🙂
Perhaps we could get some chat bot commands we could use?
Go to channel #fdfdsfs to get help!

I'm new to all of this. The HA Yellow just arrived today, but I haven't been able to find the CM5 8gb Lite or 16gb Lite in stock anywhere.
Is the Orange Pi CM5 (Rockchip), which is more widely available, also an option to use with the HA Yellow? Or are these not interchangeable?
All goes along in #beta -> release. Users complain about hacs on facebook. I see a trent.
No. Those are not confirmed to be compatible and there is no compatible HAOS image available.
hmm, where's the best place to ask about where to move a certain device to a room? I can't tell if #1284966582375813201 or #1284965988642590891
thanks, I'll look for that after I finish this HA Core Update
no worries, to be honest i am not sure where i would have put that question so was easier to just answer it in this case
but this is right now
yeah it takes a few minutes
Looks like proof that there was a gunman on the grassy knoll
Probably integrations since the Devices page is in that section. But that was really quickly answered, acceptable.
but yeah, hopefully once I've installed this update, I can get this figured out. Seems Elgato is a bit of a butt. If I can't figure this out, I'll forward it into a thread in #1284966582375813201
i should get a drawing tablet at some point instead of just using mspaint 😛
I do plan to get an iPad Air
but yeah, am defo liking Home Assistant. Especially now I'm running it on my Linux box (but it means I have to use WiFi to get online because the Home Assistant has taken the Ethernet connection)
As for how I've been able to do this... double network switch jank... until I can get myself that unmanaged switch
WAIT A MINUTE! I just saw LaMetric Time on there... I might be able to do full Google Assistant integration with it as a result... and control it from the Google Home... Dang
That worked even for the Elgato stuff, you're a star, thanks.
Is anyone good with electrical stuff? I want to try using a standard E26 to E12 candelabra converter in my old ceiling fan fixture that has a t12 bulb. The glass base is only 5cm so standard bulbs won't fit
What's a proper channel to discuss buying the Raspberry Pi CM5 for HA Yellow?
#1284966353798697001 has a Yellow tag that would probably be best here. 🙂
Does it have a purple tag?
People in #the-workshop may actually be able to help out here.
Took the back plate off the amcrest and the thermal paste is dried as well as they covered what looks you be the dev port 🤣
The Pogo pins are neat, didn't expect that

I tried to make Celeron J3455 process speech-to-text and text-to-speech
to be fair it's very quick and sounds nice with text-to-speech, but speech-to-text... 😄 Either fast and works like this or takes 40 seconds but is reasonably accurate
I'm curious if N100 would handle it better haha, I'm not very keen on spending entire evening on spinning one up and transferring Homeassistant to it to try right now tho
(I was saying "living room light on" by the way)
I'm curious, what's this device do? I tried looking at the manufacturer site, but apparently european rights to privacy are not one of their top concerns.

Kinda got that from the "Easier to block europe than respect GDPR" shtick 😅
Matter support seems great too
What's the matter with that? (Sorry in advance I just need to)
will defo test that more
hi all. just received a home assistant green (1 week delayed via amazon) today
went thru setup etc, created login and password via my password manager, so I know it is accurate
it auto logged me out after 20 minutes or so, went to log back in, invalid username and password. super pissed off right now
went direct hdmi to monitor, at HA> tried all of the password reset commands etc
invalid commands blah blah
sudo doesn't work either
tried factory reset via power button power cycle several times, nada
any other ideas? or do I really need to go buy an SD card and reader to factory reset this.
Try posting in the support group #1284966540617449515
will do, sorry about that
posted, would really appreciate any help, I about to punch a hole thru some sheetrock
damn near tried it all, @dawn badge nailed it
Can someone explain something pretty dumb im sure. But is homey a device to use with ha or is homey its own ha software? I'm a little confused.
ah ok sweet.
or apple home
do you know the differences are between homey and ha?
no
one is ha and the other is homey
ya know, I wish the phones and watches connected via the mobile HA app would show up under the device list in HA
they do
omg I had filters enabled, hence couldn't see them
you switch on which stuff you want to expose in the app then it appears in the mobile app integration
it's half past midnight, can I use that as an excuse for not noticing that sooner?
sure, why not. 😛
I'm dabbling with dashboards atm... wish the "HA managed" dashboards allowed phone battery to be displayed on them but alas... had to create a custom dashboard from scratch for that
anyone here have a kwikset 910 deadbolt?
start a thread in #1284966353798697001 and maybe someone jumps in
very cool. I may just keep mine as is for now. I'm only a year into HA, and not even that, since I've not really messed with it since installing.

In other news. What do I need to know about zigbee products. I got a garage door tilt sensor, only for it to click when I was putting it together that I needed something to pair it with....
I feel like the mods are glad we took it to a thread 😄
Are there good Zigbee smoke detectors? Ideally without cloud requirement
Zigbee devices never require a cloud connection. If you want recommendations post in #1284966353798697001 with the recommendation tag.
To whomever fixed/updated the alexa media player integration... Thank you! You are appreciated. 🔥❤️
My Govee bluetooth button that I bought just to control the space heater that I'm still using despite the recall just got discovered in HA, cool.
is there a good place to get help with govee and ha implementation?
anyone having problem's with Pironman 5? after the new update?
Sounds like #1284966582375813201
When I setup my HA, 6 months ago, I was lucky because my ISP (Digi Romania) has a free Dynamic DNS.... I just setup let's encrypt and that's it
Also, I pay 8$/month for an 1Gbps fiber internet plan....
😦 I wish
If I install the HA OS on rasp5, can I also run other programs alongside?
Only HAOS add-ons.
So jealous
Where you do live… I pay $80 for a gig fiber…
hysteresis...... in the UI Threshold.... where can that be fixed? I did add the Dutch translation just now, but the English baseword is incorrect
I pay like 60€ for 1000/50 docsis
I just signed up for 2gbit up and down thats deploying in my area for 89 USD a month
Not sure why.... I think its because 1gbit was only 10 dollar cheaper lol
The biggeer laugh I had was their advertising for the masses, they consider 500mbit a starter package ok for 1 or 2 streams....(as I'm sitting on 120mbit and ble to do multiple 4k streams) and work from home with some good QoS
I pay £36 (~$46/€43) for VDSL (68/22). Annoyingly I was meant to get FTTP but the cabinet and/or conduit was full
You're getting scammed, hard. Only 1 provider in your area?
No, but I do really like this provider and they're not much more expensive than the alternatives, I get near line-speed, incredible reliability, a static IP, and a tech-savvy helpdesk.
"Hey my router blew up, what standard does it need?"
"8111.¾ Section Foo"
"Thank"
Only way to go faster is a wireless provider, but I used one when I moved in and it caused me issues with things like my work VPN.
Scammed hard? If that's UK prices, that's pretty standard. And it only goes up from there if you want fiber.
I am also looking for this.. I think someone recommended the integration channel. I'll ask over there and mention you so you can follow.
You don't need fiber. You can get 1gbit on copper
Sure, FTTP/FTTC. Whatever. It's priced based on the speed, not on the material it passes through. Consumers don't care about that.
Well regardless of the medium no-one's doing anything faster to here according to all the switch and comparison sites.
hey there. quick one, i tried googling, but to no avail.. is there some way to pass message through translation service? I'd need to get the messages my witty AI generates for me to be in Czech, sadly llama doesn't speak it, so I'd need to pipe it through translation for my better two thirds ..
#1284966915055288530 might be able to help
I've got an upcoming house move and I'm in the same position. Although I'm going 5G because the current owner let us know that the copper connection really sucks at the address. Really hoping someone upgrades the local infrastructure in the next couple of years 🤞
right. I'll ask around there. cheers
It requires some political action. When dense areas are upgraded providers should be forced to not leave less dense areas behind
It requires nothing from me. The UK government already have in place schemes to pressure providers into action in more rural areas. There are special funds and subsidies allocated to it.
The estate I'll be moving into has a scheme lined up to install fiber. The timescales are just unclear, so I'll get a cheap wireless contract for now.
Heh, I'm in London, it's just this one road is oversubscribed and there's no room in the conduit 😄
200 down, 5 up, $80 / month, only other "providers" are cell based or satellite based
Annoyingly this is 10 min from downtown of a major metro area
is there any trick to get tts working with sonos speakers? I test the message and hear my currently playing audio mute, but the tts message doesn't play. Not sure if its an issue with google tts or my sonos
Got reolink video doorbell to play with (and replace non functioning doorbell), hook it up in office, works first try, HA updates firmware, all good. Go to install it and have to replace dead transformer. Should I just install a power outlet in the box instead of a 120vac->16vac transformer, and use the dc power brick over the LV-bell cables?
#1284966353798697001 might know
doing the google thing, camera takes ac or dc input, so probably doesn't matter that much
insert doctor who meme photo here.....
any particular patch cables for 2.5GB ethernet?
the patchiest of patch cables
Isn't less patchicity sufficient?
2.5 works on most things. thats one of the reasons why it got popular. it works in buildings already wired in cat5e from years ago
so even old Cat 5 will work?
5e yes, older 5 might be okay for short patches but might be flakey
2.5GBASE-T and 5GBASE-T can be deployed at a cable length of up to 100 m on Cat 5e or better cables
generally you can go about half the length on cat5 .. so 50m or shorter
(but even on cat5e.. if you get up to 2gbps, you're having a good day)
Yeah, I would say make sure you have ethernet connection of some kind in all rooms. I believe there are some countries in Europe that actually build new homes like that now, but I could be misremembering.
was gonna say what is this south korea? 🤣
put conduit with pull lines in your walls. 👍
beside that?
STP (shielded twisted pair) CAT6/7 whatever.
I mean you could use multimode fiber stuff.
But then you're becoming LTT and I doubt you're gonna just be given the endpoints for free to convert on each end.. 🙃
When I was building my home theater room, I used oversized conduit between the TV and the network/av closet and used paracord as pull cord (which I attached to both ends of the tubes so it could be used forever). It's saved me a few times. If I was building a house I'd run conduit like this to all major rooms in addition to 2 ethernet drops.
but yeah.. if I could go back in time..
Goddamned fucking conduits in every wall.
I know some states require that for wires.. it sounds nice.
I want cable wormholes
just set up for directional wifi links
yea, everything here runs in conduits, but in houses they are often not big enough to just throw in more lines as you'd want
yeah but good proper mesh wifi is built off good backhauls between the points and etc 😄
big issue in my parent's place. the interesting conduits are already cramped :/
rip out the tv lines and phone lines. 😛
that's why you leave the conduit empty when you're building and run hardlines (ethernet+whatever) in parallel to the conduit lines.
Illinois (or maybe just Chicago) requires metal conduit for electrical, but I don't know if they do for low-voltage. And you don't want to run those together
or you just run sewer pipes for conduit
eeeeehh.
big conduits get big expensive real fast 😛
yeah, definitely keep power and LV stuff away from each other.
we don't require conduit for power here (unless it's outside of the wall) and LV can be run without conduit as long as it has fire rated cable sleaves.
current home was built.. just before ethernet became more.. real and useful
so none of it is there by default.. I could do drops from attic crawl areas but..
ehhh..
annoying. 😄
My house was built in the late 80s and the first thing I did when I bought it was get a guy in to add Ethernet drops everywhere
the previous owner strung a really long Ethernet cable through holes they punched in the wall between rooms/closets/etc. to get it from their "office" to one of the other bedrooms
and they still had ADSL filters installed on a few of the POTS phone jacks 🙂
yeah our house nhad a bunch of those piss-poor cable-booster things in it too
from when we used cable service
from when we went to verizon the guy had to go through and tear em all out because of how hot the signal comes out of the optical terminal.
We've identified the cause of global warming
its somewhat amazing the crackhead shit that passed code in the past.
Hidden weed farms?
thats based on the idea that they had codes and inspections when some homes were built .. a lot of the codes that are enforced today didn't even come around until the 1980s.. stuff like insulation standards
sure they did, I'm sure the queen came by to check every house there. /s
So interesting little bug I discovered with automations(not sure if its still there) if you change an automation, the first time it triggers it uses the same value as it had previously. I was having issues with my thermostat setup being all wonky and thats what I figured out what happening
paracord 👍 oh and plenty of jboxes
Romania it is
Is there really no channel on here to just bounce off stupid things we have stupid questions about in HA before we start looking for "support?
Make a post in the right channel
Finished with my sinterklaas poems. for tomorrow. Always works best when applying pressure.
i'm curious if i'm the weirdo on this one..So a shelly relay is like 20 bucks and hue bulbs "depending the type" are like 30 to 50 bucks. am i the only one who likes to use hue instead for light automations? theres something about hearing a "click" that makes it seem like a motion activated switch on a wall vs the seemless hue bulb fading on. really dumb question just sayin
have you tried a shop vac?
Hahaha I don’t think it’s dumb! The satisfaction of how something sounds is very relatable to me. 😆
I don’t use Hue but I understand how pleasing it can feel.
I have to admit, I don't like hearing things click
Smart switches where you hear relays I do not like
I have clicky clacky keys on my keyboard, and I do like having the physical sound of the switch happen in my smart plugs. I dunno why. I’d probably find it weird coming from my lights, though…
Don't use relays for lights use dimmers. That way you can have a fade on/off.
-# and make sure you use dimmable (LED) bulbs
We'll have none of that new-age rubbish here. Incandescent only.
I too miss having a giant drawer full of replacement light bulbs in nine different shapes for all the bullshit variety of light fittings around the house, and having to change one every week or two
where do i find amazon plugs on HA? (i have nabu casa, so i am not sure where)
Doesn't the MagicHome integration work with Amazon plugs? If that's what you mean. https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/flux_led/
HA Cloud only connects HA devices to Alexa. Not the other way around.
i see ty
After much tweaking and asking both chat gpt and claude, I finally got a CO2 level meter I like. 😄
just checking, you are joking with the number, right?
getting a bit close to danger levels, 280 off
nvm that is in acceptable range, misunderstood the range lol
hello, i just found out about home assistant, where can i see some cool home assistant setups to give me some ideas of what can be done with it?
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLERasyubmasVHFLS0ZR4vdg3PVC09hE99&si=ghRGYorxZsI9C9K8
here are some home tours powered by home assistant.
Had my very first psu die. shit was shocking at first lol
sounds like a confession to mass transit man slaughter
they said southren.. were they talking about moving to texas? maybe we should check their news
or did recovering californian mean they moved back to ca?
@forest edge every time I see this it reminds me of you 😅😅
because it's what you would be like should you ever exit your vehicle in any other state than califronia? lol
Oh boy. I am dying here
