I’m a software engineer, but I prefer the UI for automations anyway. In large part because I’m not sitting at a computer and using my phone, and also, I hate YAML. I’d rather write Python.
Love building automations on mobile lol.
I can be where the devices are.
Just write json, it's valid yaml 🙂
lol
that's why I use my laptop
Templates are amazing, for how awful they are. 🤣 It’s a good way to shoehorn new capabilities without building a bunch of new constructs, but annoying in that it’s almost Python, but not quite.
are templates just jinja2 exposed to user?
Elaborate.
I suppose I should say: I don’t like using a serialization format for writing “code”.
i hate having to use my phone to mess with that stuff
Yes. And it’s mostly Python, but not quite.
if only HA used some of the "powers" it gains by using a context free definition language
the woman's pixel 9 was already delivered. that was insanely fast since we bought it on friday
Lately I've been thinking, it would be wonderful to get a weekly log of all the automations that didn't fire and reasons
gonna see if I can squeeze another few years outn of my pixel 3 lol
honestly, I don't think you could mentally handle actually knowing how many times some automation you set up with the intention of never having to look at it again misfires
It will be a long list but would like to know. So many little things that were automated years ago and would like to know the hit rate
maybe you could get that google ai to text thing to let you know in a pleasant way
I am working on that slowly and carefully. lol
"The dryer automated cutoff time has failed due to poor understanding of home logic, your underwear is now 3 times smaller"
LMAO!!!!
I started tracking pool rpms, energy consumption, human interaction and the ability for automations to recover when interrupted. Things you learn
sounds like a headache lol
You mean humans, yep
I currently track stuff now that I don't even bother looking at anymore lol
You think you automated 100% then you notice the vac rpm's didn't recover after the pool tech interrupted the cycle. Who said this was easy.
now see to me that seems simple. just turn off the vac when someone gets near. you already stated you use cameras to track people lol
Automation to track automations lol
My laptop is hooked up to desk basically, it's inconvenient to use it.
sounds like a computer with extra steps
Uh, I dunno how to explain it better. lol. My front yard isn't visible from my office, I like being there and adjusting them where I can see them instead of going back and forth.
them* being my lights.
Cameras with person detection helps but now I need to know what they are doing.
So your lights don't report states?
So
Funny that.
I am back at my laptop to investigate specifically that.
My lights in HA are currently showing as purple but they are decidedly not.
They are definitely a white light right now, and HA isn't seeing that.
Whether the light is green or purple also doesn't help with the VIBES™ that the lights are collectively giving off
So you have issues with states
@forest edge knowing it's a person is not enough. I am testing turning off person notification based on information about the person. In this case no need to alert me with person notifications if they are gardeners.
Vibes™️ are super important.
How come you don't get states of your lights?
I've actually been shitposting and not looking in dev tools this whole time.

/sigh
I should create a support thread.
fml
The state is returning the purple. I dunno wtf is happening here.
CAN'T MAKE A SCENE FOR MY LIGHTS LIKE THIS.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Yep power cycle
"turning it of"
HA?
You want a default on color?
What kind of lights are these?
You can define default on colors in HA - but not very user-friendly. The light_profiles.csv file.
https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/light/#default-turn-on-values

I know WTH month is not for requesting new integrations but is a fix/feature to an existing integration allowed?
Bugs belong on GitHub though
WTH is about lowering barriers - they are allowed.
The more I troubleshoot this the more confusing this gets. lmao. Trying one more thing before I post stuff because I want to make sure that it's all been attempted.
I am so annoyed lol.
are the forums still down?
Weird. The link to the cookbook works for me, but the link to the WTH stuff from the announcement doesn't
Sometimes they work very slow, sometimes they don't work at all
Discourse being Discourse.
Load balancing and CDNs are hard.
you want something that won't be invented for another 70 years it sounds like
Hello so annoyed lol, I'm Joost
Papa?
Good thing we have these reliable Discord forum channels!
I almost choked on the snack bar I am eating lmao.
Strike 1
on that note since you brought it up....
playlist in plex are absolute trash
I am trying.
Perhaps scenes will work 😆
It's daddy for you
Full reset of these stupid lights and even in the Tuya developer portal it's not reflecting the right colors for the scene selection.
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
Tuya
I think we've identified the problem
tuya doesn't work well? It's so highly recommended here though!
the second you said developer after Tuya I knew whatever it was belonged in the trash
lmao
This is exactly why I didn't state the brand earlier

Now I know it's the devices themselves and not HA. But...I dunno wtf happened.
Sneaky
some lights can't produce acurate colors for the color selected
my magic home ones were a little off
We would've answered your question long time ago
It's not even changing the colors in the device logs from Tuya themselves.
It shows it's changing the scene but then keeps the colors.
maybe it don't speaky rgb'y
The only recent change was...an app update.
We've updated the app to make you more likely to use Hue
what about @fathom sparrow ?
Missy, did you unpower the light completly? Ive found some of my lights get angry and require a complete power off to behave
sign of pure quality right there
Ugh no, but that's because it's outside and I was avoiding it. It's cold right now lol.
I guess I should, though.
be easier to just replace the bulb with something decent lol
Its actually my third reality lights, when I was setting up the dashboards with sliders and double clicks etc I think it just overloaded the light, it wouldn't even respond to z2m
its fine now
interesting. not experinced that issue yet
I've only experienced it twice, both times it was because I was screwing around with things
It's not a light. It's outdoor path lights.
I will say zigbee dosen't like sudden fast changes lol
snip the controller part of the wires and attach something better lol
if these are led path light strings, you could use something that uses wled for example to control them
Missy its 11 F out here, if I can take a kid to hockey with temp's at 6 you can go outside an unplug a controller 😛
I've got an Olimpia Splendid Nexya S4 and want to integrate it with HA. What's the best way? I've found that a Tado AC control could kind of make it smart. The AC uses an IR remote control.
Why are powerbanks with built-in charger so vanishingly rare? If I bring a huge powerbank on a trip, I don't want to also have to bring a usb charger for it. I want it to be the charger.
They already have nearly all of the electronics. Just add 10 mm to the length and slap a C8 socket on there!
You basically have to step up to the smallest version of a "portable power station" for that.
These for instance are 250Wh (cf 20Ah/3.6V power bank ~= 72Wh), but have a C14 inlet: https://eu.ecoflow.com/products/river-2-portable-power-station
•256Wh capacity and 300W output. •Provide up to 0.8kWh a day with solar charging. •Fastest Recharge 0-100% in only 60 min. •Safest LFP battery provides 10 years of use. •Lightweight at only 3.5kg. •First power station with a TÜV Rheinland safety certification. •Boost output to 600W and run up to 80% of high-wattage appliances. •4 ways to charge:...
you mean the power banks that are also wall warts? I hate them
https://enegonelectronics.com/es/products/15000mah-portable-charger-power-bank
Seems they do exist, but I expect these are anything but high quality
I think I have 2 of that style. I never use them
I have a couple of old Xiaomi ones (of the microusb in / usb-a out vintage) which work well enough in a pinch, and then a big chungus (1.25kWh) Ecoflow which can do 2x 100W USB-PD, and 1800W through its inverter
It's of the "luggable" variety, weighs about 14kg
TBH if I need a midsize option in future I'd definitely consider the 100W PD adapters to go on my power tool batteries
https://www.dewalt.com/product/dcb094k/20v-maxflexvolt-5-amp-usb-charging-kit
I only have the 100Wh/100W-PD variant since I don't want t othink about taking it on a plane
I have a couple of power banks for my steam deck, one is approved for flights, the other not so much(to big), but in the US nobody really says anything
the only airport that has ever made any noise about power banks is China, where (years ago, at least) you couldn't carry over 10000mAh
I have 20000 mah(which is approved in US) and a 40,000(which is grey zone)
it's one thing to have to toss nail clippers or a tape measure (thanks, India), and another to not be able to carry a big power bank
From what I've read it has to do with the amount of lithium present in the battery
could probably be done nowadays thanks to GaN power electronics
I'm sure it exists
Question to all i was browing thru the Home assistant community forms and i found a intergration for ha allowing for the controll of redstone ingame thru ha can someone tell me if this is trustworthy
here is the the link
huh?
yea idk i just randomly found it
Why? Just because you can, doesn't mean you should 🙂
Could be cool, though.
do you say that in the term of why it was created or not to dowload it?
especially for modded minecraft with complicated machines
Fusion, I think its the other way around, its using redstone to control your automations isn't it?
btw love modded, tempted to start an ATM 10 playthrough
Anker has a few
yea idk i want it mostly to controll ingame machines or get notifications for low power and stuff
You can use xnet in a similar manner for that if your mod pack has it(if you're talking only in the game)
i dont think so the demo video that is provided shows the activation of an irl sensor activating smth ingame
nope talking outside of the game
i mean i dont use home assistant only for home automation i use it for other stuff like this
its convinient to have everything in one place
I'm confused, when I viewed that video it looks like redstone is replacing the automation built in within HA, or Node-Red, not alerting you that a minecraft device is low on RF and leting HA know to alert you(that being said the video is really short, so hard to know what exactly its capable of),
Retrieve entity states and output redstone depending on conditions (temperature < 24°C, door sensor = open)
Call services with custom parameters such as brightness and media_content_id in YAML
Create working automations with redstone and without having to enter the game
from the official mod page
Can it do the reverse though, read the restone state from a comparitor and output the status to HA? IE using redstone strength to output when a chest is completely full and send an alert to HA?
not sure about that probably not tho but there are ways to bypass that
the only sad part is that is not updated to the latest version so i cant even use it the way i want
is 300 MB for recorder db high? I'm trying to prune disk usage as I have a fairly simple setup but at 32GB I'm running out of space
No, it isn't.
ok thanks for confirming - guess i'll keep searching for what is eating up my space -is there a "normal" disk size recommended for home assistant?
i was using 32gb but looks like i'll have to bump it up if this usage is "normal"
it just keeps growing
or any easy way to see what is taking up the disk space - 'df -h' at command line did not make miuch sense
32GB is the minimum in the recommendations.
I been considering using my dewalt batteries as a power supply for my soldering iron since many of them now use usb c etc
following on from yesterday its seems my (now calibrated) co2 sensor seems to flaten out at about 1650-1700 ppm. so higher than hoped but not critically high i suppose
room needs more airflow
is it safe to purge the "statistics" table? in my current setup it's 208MB and i'm not sure what purpose of this table is
#1284966617670881350 with the "Analytics" tag might know.
it does but i am going to struggle to get more standard airflow. i will probably just have an alert to get me to open the door/window for a bit. but its the heat and noise retention vs airflow. i have had some ideas to fix it better but not sure how long at this place so cant/dont want to make big modifications
I have 3x 9Ah, 4x 5Ah and 2x 3Ah batteries. Nearly a kilowatt hour total.
dewalt batteries?
Yeah
holy crap.. that was a pretty penny
Certainly weren't cheap. But I have all electric garden tools, as well as power tools
did you get the tire inflator while it was on sale for BF?
if you got all those 20v's having that would be a no brainer lol
I managed to avoid spending a cent (on BF in general)
Also we have one of these: https://www.mi.com/global/product/xiaomi-portable-electric-air-compressor-2/
Which is actually a damn good piece of kit for the $40-50 USD it costs
That is the idea, yes
Our 20V MAX* Corded/Cordless Air Inflator can run on any one of three power sources** for maximum versatility: 20V MAX* battery, 12V DC, or 110V AC. Use it on the jobsite, or on the go. It features a high-pressure rubber hose for durability. The threaded chuck and included onboard accessories mak...
anyone else have that one automation that makes you smile every time it fires? I have one for when I enter home zone, and it gets things set for me, after which sending me a "welcome home ^_^" notification
sounds lonely
not wrong, but after a long day, kids, wife, etc it's nice
I don't have a particular one, but I do like that I just don't have to care about lightning ever again as that is all automated
is it me is the Snapshot enitites broken?
wait. I think I got it.
I forgot I had to restart YAML configuration. D'oh
these battery lightbulbs are an interesting concept https://www.amazon.com/DABAOLUM-Emergency-Rechargeable-Equivalent-Battery/dp/B0C77XCCV7
....damn, that IS interesting
Problem is if you like RGB shit you can't exactly combine that
that's going in the bookmarks tho
they are meant for power outs lol
Nono, I know
but the places I'd most want to light are also places I need RGB lighting
also, may or may not get to use HA for something interesting, depends on how things shake out
friend's going to do a DJ set in a suite at a con I'm going to, wanted to set up some lightshow shit for him
kinda wondering if we can use HA to expand what kinda lights we can hook up and save some money
researching Art-net and all that, I think it really depends on the latency lol
You don't think? Using more off the shelf LED strips or bulbs might be more affordable than DMX-specific stuff
No because they rarely offer high bandwidth and low latency communication abilities which can be universally controlled
There may be even more things to consider from the light output being adequate for larger distances/spaces to potential safety hazards caused by such installation
That is not really protocol specific but generally would differ from what you can get away with at home
Fair play, appreciate the input
I’m traveling to Frankfurt and Berlin and I wonder if there are any good physical stores to by smart devices? Any recomendations?
It may have been stated 100's of times, but the Galaxy Tab A9+ really is a great HA dashboard.
is that a giant russet potato sitting on the couch in the background?
All the major cool hobby tech ones closed a couple of years ago
Some hardware stores and general the large tech stores have some smart home stuff but it's mostly just the regular things
That's is the weirdest impulsive purchase of my life. I learned who Travis Scott was and stopped going to mcdonald shortly after.
It's now a family heirloom
LOL
I was gonna say, it either looked like a potato or a mcdonalds hashbrown... but edited it before i hit enter...
i had no clue that was a thing
i usually say after i'm gone, my newphews will probably just dump all the stuff i have in a bin while frustratingly shaking their heads. "why did he keep this?" as like a bunch of LEDs and ESP32s from failed/never started home projects, kickstarter rewards, and printed t-shirts with pop culture referecnes they don't understand pile into the trash.
That is the type of thing you gotta put in a will. like an evil millionaire. "no one gets a thing unless the pillow is cared for. a trust has been set up to pay a lawyer to check into the pillow's well-being each year"
this is now going in my will.
I just want it to follow the scenes it has.
I am where I've found a 3rd Tuya integration that lets me do things but now the light keeps resetting the scene it should be set to.
At one point the scene itself saved with the Tuya scene number but used the RGB from the ...light's icon.
The worst part is that I am still not at a point to post a thread because I haven't tried everything I can find.
I went to the bathroom before sleep in one night and heard a strong white noise in the hallway.... i thought it was the neighbors vaccumming, At 2 AM? Then i opened the network cupboard (its in the hallway) and guess what was making the noise: my mini pc running home assistant and other things.... i grabbed my phone and started remote desktop, turns out that the HA VM used 50%cpu in the middle of the night?
I'm highly attuned to weird noises like that
Yesterday, it was a very low rumble that almost sounded like crickets and was the pump that pressurizes my incoming water line for my espresso machine. The water tank was empty
Every time I walked by the machine I thought 'what the heck is that?'
So am I. I hear weird frequencies before most of my family.
Weird being "anything not regularly heard".
as we get older our minds can and will misinterpret common sounds as well. children at the school across the street would often sound like cat meows to me under the right conditions
I never hear anything for good 10 hours. Sleep like a baby.
hearing aids don't count pal
Hopefully I will never need it. But max now is 12.8k
12.8k what?
Frequency response. What else?
the ability to hear isn't the issue lol
I hung the Arduino/WS2811 Christmas lights today, just finished adding a new scene for 2024. We try to do a new one every year, but I'm running out of ideas, anyone else animate Christmas lights and willing to share so I can shamelessly steal ideas from it? This is a single string, nothing too fancy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SlI9g8-K_Zs
Updated for 2024, Added Tetris.
Runs on an Arduino Uno with a 200 WS2811 LED addressable light string.
Code here: https://gist.github.com/prairiesnpr/f57154f91eb77c512c3f25bca4338ad2
it's what your brain dechipers what it heard
That's not a question. West coast right? Couldn't decipher any better.
that isn't the set that has the clear bulb to make them look like normal C9's is it?
wish the front of my house was just a straight run like that lol
No, it's just the led encased in a protective epoxy, look like this https://www.amazon.com/ALITOVE-LED-Individually-Addressable-Waterproof/dp/B01AG923GI/
@tidal bronze"and before this video gets anymore awkward" he then follows with "I love you" man you cali's are weird lmao https://youtu.be/fsZW1xfmdqs?si=0uQFSdO5ZRaQHKrX&t=922

yea they make those with a base and a c9 style clear bulb case that pops on top to make them look like traditional bulbs which is why I asked. I couldn't tell in the video
In this video, Chris shows how to plan and test RGB Christmas Lights with WLED before you install them on your house. He discovers data signal issues and shows how to fix them. These are RGB LED pixels that work with free WLED software. Each bulb can be set to any of 16 million colors. You can create any patterns you want, change them anytime, a...
Those are nicer, these were a random ebay purchase several years ago.
I really need to redo them on an esp or something similar, it gets annoying having to go out in the cold if I want to apply code changes.
they need to make a new national registered list for you people
I spent all day fighting Tuya lights and finally bent them to my will. Am I real user now????
Sickening
At last I see the light.

What do you guys think is the low hanging fruit in terms of cost savings?
Someone posted something cool on the forums. Can anyone get the play store link to work for them? (not support just genuinely want to know if people can get it to work bc it didn't work for me)
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/android-tv-notifications-tvoverlay/771355/4?u=quincarter
Hi, I wrote an AndroidTV app that can display multiple cameras stream on your AndroidTV, and can pop up a live video stream that can be triggered by HA automation, although I have only tested it on a Google TV with Chromecast so your milage may very, but maybe give it a try: Play Store link Wiki for setting up Configure overlay permission C...
The idea is pretty awesome tbh. And exactly what i am looking for (based on screenshots and stuff on their wiki)
I guess yes:
You have devices that are compatible? That was my issue. And it didn't exist on my chromecast to download either. Even though i have the one they listed in their wiki 😄
It says 1+ downloads 😄 i didn't know if it was fake or if it was like a brand new app.
I used an iPhone
lol
I didn't want to ask for support 😄 it was just broad
And the link works 🙂
I guess if anyone tries it, let me know your mileage with it and what deivce you got it on.
interesting although pipup has been pretty solid for me
Back in my day, black Friday used to be an event, these days they just jack up prices the month before so they can have a "70%" sale that's really more like 15%
I believe they fit here just fine
somebody got a haircut
Here’s fine for now! I thought of doing a pets channel but didn’t want to overwhelm everybody with new things. I’ll consider adding one after the new year. 😌
any deals on humidity sensors? zigbee.
May be some in here for you. https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1305621029976018984
i picked up the aqara ones on sale
I wonder how much money I could have saved had I paid more attention to that instant coupon check box on amazon lol
Out of curiosity...any word on a release for the new HA speaker?
Well, to be clear, it's not really a speaker in the sense that most of use speakers - this is a voice device.
We haven't published any details about it yet, but it is coming this month. 🙂
I'm curious about one thing if you can answer..is it a better alternative to the box3 in terms of accuracy. Like is there more mics..guess I'm trying to get details you can't discuss lol
Yea speaker isn't even what I'd use it for. I'm using sonos currently as the output for my box3
where
Amazon. It was a flash sale when I got it. Check CamelCamelCamel
Ha, I can't discuss much, you are correct. I'd say it's a better alternative - I look forward to seeing if others feel the same. 😄
You know how it goes in the tech world - a company is really happy with something only to be demolished by say LTT.
-# I don't expect that, but it's definitely common.
Yea but I tend to think the ha crew are more inline with what customers want
I think this even without bias 🙂 It feels much more pleasant to use in my living environment. The BOX-3 ended up in the closet after a month.
is lucky to work in B2B
how cheap did you snag yours?
I converted these to Zigbee, and they can be configured to report at specific intervals:
Xiaomi Mi Temperature and Humidity Monitor 2
They are cheap and accurate too.
had two of them, upgraded to an early custom firmware and it ended up bricking..couldn't fix them via otg and soldering.
just want something that works out of the box natively so i don't have to mess with it again. also the new firmwares on those aren't moddable, iirc. i believe xiaomi changed something on them.
Yes, there were issues with the conversion at the beginning, but it's been working well for a while now. I've converted many of these for my family. Most of my Zigbee sensors had the problem of responding very slowly. The insulation in the apartment is quite good, so a delay of 1-2 minutes can already cause overheating 🙂 Now, with these, I've managed to keep the temperature within ±0.2°C.
What color? Viktor's?
is anyone aware of any sort of bathroom exhaust fan that can mount easily over a bathroom window and also be smart (or attach to a standard smart AC wall plug)
Someone might be in #the-workshop or #home-and-garden.
I'm about to open a thread in #1284966439702499400 but I wanted to check to make sure I'm not missing anything.
I'm seeing that I get "Waiting for data" pretty frequently recently.
I just got stuck in that state, but when I hit the local IP:port instead of my cloud address, it seems to load perfectly fine.
Seems to happen whenever I do something pretty intensive, like reload an integration with lots of devices / entities.
Anyone experience this before, or is this definitely a new thread territory?
Everything is new thread territory here
or even worse. Gamersnexus
To be fair Gamers Nexus at least does some investigations
and research and in my mind is an advocate for the consumer(newegg fiasco comes to mind)
louis rossman too, very much enjoy him exposing big tech. Especially apple lol
somebody needs to
yes it looks weird
Do you know how to check roles on Discord? Genuine question, because they do tell you but I am sure that there may be people who don't know how to find where they are.
you can look at someone's profile to see what roles they have but thier role has nothing to do with the color shock lol
Roles and their colors are applied by their order
You can configure this on the settings page of the guild
again. nothing to do with the color shock
Oh well that's been around since before the switch.
Our language leaders aren't in the community channels as much.
Used to be the color for nitro booster
no that was red
Maybe still is?
this is something else
Weren't you talking about this? #the-water-cooler message
I guess that's more maroon
Seems to work as expected tbh
It's more red than any other color
It should probably not be red and neither anything dark
Those work terrible on certain displays and even worse with glasses
The server booster rank is usually pink.
it "use" to be just plain red
back in the old days...
missy had adjusted that role's new color
readjusted I think cause I made fun of the first iteration lol
unless it's still fru fru
yea pink
You have probably discussed it here already? But whats about the forum. The performance is really bad, almost unusable
I wish I were a cat...
Yea, the forums seem unhappy atm.
we really need to create a few image memes on this
Probably due to all the WTH 🙂
You can be whatever you want!
Be the change you want to see in others! Poop in a box and yell at someone else until they clean it up
Ah, I’ve already chosen 🙂 There’s no path from ponies to cats anymore 😄
Well, who would take care of the cat anyway 😄
Nah, it's unrelated. We actually don't know the underlying issue. It resolves itself every time.
But there are people looking at it right now.
TOP. MEN.
Forum having issues? Seems very slow and sluggish
That little girl had it coming.
Oh 🙂
At night in the streets? With advanced science books? Highly suspicious!
She's what maybe 8, 9 years old?

hya all dont know the exact place to ask so will start here :). im looking for a cheap reliable way to have report back if a door is locked or unlocked. dont even need it to be a smart open lock :). is that a crazy question 😄
#1284966353798697001 with the "Recommendation" tag might have an idea
ok cool thx @iron granite !
So… I have a 2012 macbook pro which is still chugging along because that’s all they know how to do, but it’s not receiving security updates since a while. OpenCore is becoming cumbersome with the updates. Which distro would be best?
Depends, what are you going to use it for?
Don't worry, everyone. petro is the good guy posting this for WTH.

LOL I was able to post right before it shat the bed again.
I also love the comments talking about the irony.
is there a channel to show off dashboard? or is it just #1284960456880029707 ?
Yep, show off your dash in the shameless channel. :3

I always sing it that way now.
Is Lastpass advertising another password keeper here? Have they seen their track record?!
Look in this day of remote working, writing passwords down on sticky notes is definitely super secure now.
And restore complete!
Missy trying to admin a discord server like
Okay guys, let's all share pictures of our desk this week to show how fesitve your work place is 🎄
It would genuinely not surprise me if people forget to remove their post-its
Not possible. Classified information.
I'm super impressed with how flawless backup/restore has worked for me.
The forum is overloaded. Is that normal?
No, we're looking into it
It is not normal, but known.
I'm scared to say that the WTH thread for potato forums is now loading because I bet it won't after I say it is...
Either that .. or this ..
As someone who has dealt with a LOT of incidents over the years .. all I can say is .. #hugops
I'm just glad that I don't have to do much other than tell others things fell over.
Oh and shitpost on WTH posts about the forums running on potatoes.
WAIT
I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE POTATO IS FIXED.
ZE POTAT HAZ BIN FIXED
And I am not seeing a lot of issues reloading anymore.
YAY!
Potato Core i5 installed
you may resume shitposting.
-# we never stopped
So I did something incredibly dumb today, I flashed a USB drive with HA OS and then tried to restore my backup .. which of course .. meant I was runnin off the USB stick. Instead of what I meant to do, which was boot my Ubuntu live USB and write the image to the NVMe drive, lol
But I noticed somethign odd, it didn't automatically update when it booted. I ran into issues restoring my backup because it was running an old version of the supervisor. But when I did it correctly, and imaged hte proper disk .. it did update on the first boot and the restore worked without messing with anything.
Is this expected?
Wondered if I just ran into somethign strange .. or if booting off a live USB of the OS is expected to not do auto updates...
Looking for some advice/suggestions on wired multiroom audio setups that I can use with Home Assistant... Not sure where to ask?
#1284966353798697001 for hardware recs, #1284966582375813201 for connecting it. Potentially also the music assistant discord.
@thick solstice
JA
Really? How?
Discourse has to be more scalable than that, right? Where does it run?
Oh it is, we just have more work that needs to be done to scale.
There's a bandaid fix for now, I posted in the WTH thread.

That's not available except for side loading as well. Hmm ok good to know though.
Reminds me of that time someone tweeted about how thingiverse sucked, and thingiverse replied saying ”Actually, we just bought a second raspberry pi to run the server, so things should look up soon”
I shared petro's post with the guy who was fixing things and when everything was addressed he told me that the potato was fixed. I love that I get to lean into it.
Potato upgraded. It's a Kartoffel now
GLaDOS is running on a potato, so why shouldn't a forum?
You found our inspiration.
HA green server farm
@rapid plinthare you able to adjust the temprature on your centralite?
Yeah definitely, though there can be a sizable delay before the change is reflected both on the thermostat's display and on other Hass clients. I've hypothesized that, and I don't know the exact terminology, but that it's not a truly "active" device but instead "sleeps" and wakes up every 10-30sec. Which would explain the long delay and why Hass seems to just roll with it
through z2m I am able to to set the set point but in HA I cannot adjust the climate enity. infact only thing I can do is turn the system from heat to off lol
it does show current room temp tho
all in all this thing is turning out to be a turd lol
Are you talking about a Pearl zigbee Thermastat?
on a totally unrelated topic, why do kids argue about taking showers, my 8 year is a sweaty crunchy mess after hockey, yet complains I took a shower yesterday!
I'm running zha, maybe that makes a difference somehow
Centralite did another thermostat before the Pearl, it's a much more basic thing with rubber buttons and an oldschool LCD segment display
they can be had cheap on eBay
Gotcha, pearls are cheap now too, 30bucks
no mine is the 3156105
Using the media player seek action, is it possible to use a button that has hold/release actions to continuously seek +15sec while the button is held?
Doing some last last minute shopping.. i want to setup a strip with wled.. Does anyone sell a kit with wled preloaded, case, powersuppy ready to go?
you can find controllers with wled preinstalled but I have not seen a "kit" yet
#1284966353798697001 or the wled discord
gotta love when the amazon app sends you something interesting that says a deal just for you for cyber monday, open it and it's some outrageous priced thing with a miniscule discount for cyber monday
I'll settle for a esp32 in a nice box I guess 🙂
I dunno. commercial products are around 16 bucks and are made with esp32 with wled in a very small form factor as is. unless someone just likes soldering and messing with loading firmware a person really isn't saving too much $ going diy anymore
welp didn't give myself enough time to figure out what cyber monday deal I can get for LED strips
there wasn't much of that on sale anyways
BTF-LIGHTING RGBCCT 5050 RGBWW(RGB+Cool White+Warm White) 5 Colors in 1 LED Strip Lights 5m 16.4ft 60LEDs/m Multi-Colored IP65 Silicone Coating Waterproof DC12V for Bedroom Kitchen Home Decoration : Amazon.ca: Tools & Home Improvement
thinking of grabbing some of these
in the next uh... 3 minutes

unsure if it's good value tho'
aliexpress is cheaper
they deliver to Canada? I've never used it
dont see why they wouldn't
then I'd also need to buy 6 pin controllers
that are HA local / friendly
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B096VL35RD there's this but it's Tuya which is only semi-local
BTF-LIGHTING C05W RGBCCT PWM SMD FCOB (+ R G B C W) 6PIN LED Strip 2.4GHz Tuya WiFi Group Controller Alexa Google Home Control Match with WR01RF RC03RFB RC04RFB RC05RFB RGBCCT Remote : Amazon.ca: Musical Instruments, Stage & Studio

Anyway whatever, these light strips aren't critical so I'll get to it when I can. I just hope this Facebook Marketplace fellow responds so I can pick up and finally try these IKEA/Sonos bookshelf speakers
Goodbye Cyber Monday - Hello Cyber Tuesday 🎉
Argg. Can i vent my sinterklaas issue here? A QA vs doctor story.
In Hungary, the period from November 1 to December 15 was essentially a whole month of sales at one point...
It was a mix of Black Friday, Cyber Month/Week/Day and everything in between 😄
A special law had to be introduced stating that the original price from which the discount is calculated can only be the lowest price from the past 30 days 🙂
We have a similar law here, it's something like good must have been on sale at the higher price for at least 28 days before the sale price, and in the majority of stores if you're a chain.
What's the best channel to use for a little HA troubleshooting folks?
#1284976732428046461 is where to ask for that
Though yes I agree the new channel structure is hard to figure out and personally think its a bit stifiling.
Anyone uses iOS Shortcuts to control their devices?
The devices in HA?
This will turn into a topic for https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1284965926336335993, assuming there's an actual question
This is awesome, 25k donation from duckduckgo 🙂 #announcements message

thats awesome
cut to video of Missy diving into a pile of gold, Scrooge McDuck style
Hmm
No donations to things like IA or Blender
(FoSS software and archiving is how we achieve privacy)
As does HA, EFF and practically every org on that list :p
They donate $1.1M and yet, not good enough apparently…
It is up to the donor to decide, where the money goes to.
Also, I’m pretty sure their mission, with the spread privacy tagline, it support projects that are actively promoting privacy or privacy, focused alternatives to things. That’s why you see open Home foundation and signal in there.
This reminds me… I get a $1k donation match annually from my company. Time to put that to use!
HA is great but there is stuff with even more impact https://numfocus.org/
Don't want to post this in the Beta channel, but for scenes, are there any plans to get tilt cover working in there?
I’m not seeing a direct line to open code for science and privacy. Sure, it would probably have some impact on privacy down the line, but that’s not the goal for DuckDuckGo as I understand it.
They are a privacy focused alternative to Google, so they are supporting orgs aligned with that. Who knows how they selected recipients? There are probably plenty of worthy organizations that didn’t make the cut, but whining about not supporting “enough” is toxic.
They already do work.
agreed
They do but they don't. I can add the entity, adjust its open percentage and save it. But the scene wont work fter that. Get: "Failed to perform the action scene/turn_on. Entity cover.office_blinds does not support this service."
Just created an issue https://github.com/home-assistant/core/issues/132191 with details from the log.
I just did exactly that 🤔
Really? This may be a just me thing...not sure why, nothing unique about my setup.
I created a scene for the tilt blinds closed, opened them again and ran the scene. The blinds closed.
Did you do open/closed or by percentage?
eh doesnt matter, both methods dont work for me
same error
How well would an orange pi zero 3 run HA? I am debating to pick one up
What's creating your blinds
Template covers do work, SwitchBot Blind Tilt ones directly don't. Strange.
240 for SwitchBot, 251 for the template.
No one said anything about "not supporting enough" except for you. The only question asked was why some orgs were listed and others weren't, and I think that was answered. Not sure what's toxic about that :p
For further troubleshooting we should move to #1284966582375813201
That's your problem
@iron granite does your switchbot support open/close and stop?
I'll try.
-# never used those entities directly
They open_tilt, close_tilt and stop, but don't open/close
The template ones uses open/close for the tilt as well
Yeah, your template cover supports open/close/and stop
where your switchbot does not
OPEN = 1
CLOSE = 2
SET_POSITION = 4
STOP = 8
OPEN_TILT = 16
CLOSE_TILT = 32
STOP_TILT = 64
SET_TILT_POSITION = 128
1+2+8+16+32+64+128 = 251
16+32+64+128 = 240
And the scene just understands open/close
Not well
home networking day. stuff coming in today: unifi ap, zigbee router, light controller
very happy yall convinced me to run proxmox. i can get OPNsense running too
I just have the switchbot tilts, and ive grouped them in some instances using helpers.
ah sorry just saw the rest of the convo.
I do love a good "rebuild my network" day.
did they ever make it so that we can assign like template entities to devices yet?
don't think you can make a mqtt helper through ui
you almost could do a work around but then your boned on any set functionality lol
What would be the minimal requirement to run well on an sbc?
Rasp Pi 4 is the lowest I'd go, but by the time you add a SSD and SSD adaptor you're better getting a n100 mini pc
TBH I'd skip the 3 and go right to the 4 a small form factor PC
peersonally wouldnt go less then 4gb ram but a rpi4 is probably about the min
they really should have made a lite version
a mini pc is probably best but if you want easy and min spec then get a green
being able to slap a bare bones on a zero would be awesome
My vms are less than 4gig
100% depends on how you use HA.
i am sure its fine but i like breathing space. i have seen it spike a bit if i load a couple of addons too
i think its unhappy
thing has been a workhorse
I scored this the other day for like $70 shipped... I'm thinking about attaching it today, do I have to install an app to get this thing working?
time to put it out to pasture
its going to outlast everything else
at least it has purpose. i have some 3b+'s in a draw somewhere waiting for a turn to shine again
the only pi's I have now that are not being used for something are my zeros

i have 2 proxmox servers so stuff gets chucked in them these days for the most part
well thats your issue.. pi's are meant to be used in places where you can't just do that or throw in some docker lol
i just use dell sff pc's... dirt cheap and great systems.. toss in some ssd/nvme and some extra ram, you got docker out the wazoo
fair point. i use them on occasion but have had less use of them for the most part. got a cm4in my yellow and a cm4 on a pikvvm though
only shows 12 containers in the list, but there's 36 containers running
do you have multiple production HA instances running at your house?
no, I just have HA instances at 3 diffrent locations
I have just recently been introduced to OPNsense, after I went to try and download PFsense again, lol
I would have more if they made a lite version of ha
the new ui in opnsense is weird
not as much as a fan over the previous
i am a fan of and currently use opnsence but have used pfsence in the past
out of interest, what would you strip out to make it "lite"?
I have no idea.. just know currently a fresh install of it uses more ram than a zero can have
could probably remove much of the ui if not all of it
Just install an ancient version, something before 0.70, those needed less RAM 😛
don't even want to think of the headaches that might be lol
That would be closer to version 1.0 anyway.
Has there ever been a 1.0 version?
I am trying to figure out the lowest idle possible machine. I got an n100 and a couple NUCs and from checking the lowest idle watts I can manage was 6w, I was trying to find something that could go lower....if it's possible
a green
Isnt that a rpi4?
Also can I run anything else on it like a file server or adblock
"Green has a low power consumption: under heavy load, it uses ~3 W, 1.7 W when idle."
from the documentation
you could run them as addons and as long as your not smashing it i imagine it would be fine
Ya it's for only a few users
green is a neat little device, runs much faster than you would expect. I'm very happy with it
And I can get it ordered to anywhere in the world?
i dont see why not
There are exceptions.
who did you put sanctions on @iron granite ?
I doubt someone would offer deliveries to North Korea for example.
yeah i imagine not, but in general beetween the resellers i imagine you could get it shipped almost anywhere
Legal sanctions, high import fees or delivery costs might be a deal breaker for some countries.
thanks to all the trade wars its no longer economoical to ship from anywhere to everywhere
as always, money talks. if you were determined and had lots of money you could probably get one delivered to the moon 😛
At times like this, I’m glad to be European. Though it’s a bit strange because a package from the US or China takes 5-9 days, and it’s the same within the EU if I’m not ordering from a neighboring country.
For the wifi one, most probably.
With the poe one, it gets an address via dhcp iirc, and you don't need the app 🙂
although, as much as i like home assistant i am not sure i would like it to control the air lock on a moon base...
just set it's default state to closed
Currently working at a hospital (final phase of bringing it online), using proper stuff to sort the operating room sluces, and I can say it feels sketchy AF 🤣
an airlock is always closed (at least half of it is anyway)
there are home assistant installations in North Korea. surely with hardware
Wouldn't that make it by definition half open at all times?

currently trying to work out the line of "unsupported use case" to "very unsupported use case"
They have disappeared.
Is this the optimistic airlock?
Yes
If I were Kim Jong Un, I’d also stick to running open-source stuff 🙂 Though he can afford to have one custom-built for himself.
Pessimistic would be half closed

I personally suspect it's people using VPNs to post memes.
nope, it can be "no open" or "half open"
Why would they lock the air, it's not guilty of the crimes presented in this court
i assumed that was an executive decision to hide them
Double fail safe should be fine 🙂
anyone ever tried to get HA running on "Red Star OS"?
I don’t think they’re browsing the internet 😄 The internet is a bit expensive there.
Not capitalism software would probably run fine on communism os
Have you tried Hannah Montana Linux?
nothing a tcp over dns tunnel cant fix.
ooo i saw someone mention that the other day. i had forgotten about it until then. it was ubuntu under the hood i think?
Gotta get Miley Cyrus in on supporting that.
Two devs make the features in half the time right???
in the same way 2 musicians play a song in half the time of 1 😛
One starting at the beginning, one starting at the and and meeting in the middle.
if a song is played backwards is it still the same song?
It's called agile
Different song, because everyone knows that playing music backward exposes satanic lyrics
YVAN EHT NIOJ

if i wanted to try and make my own home assistant green, what would be the closest possible hardware should i be looking at? raspberry pi 4? or what?
Subliminal messages are only allowed if they tell people to buy Tuya.
AYUT EHT YUB
Yeeeee, Pi 4 is pretty good.
Is that what was happening with the hissing HA Yellow?
how would a rpi5 2gb compare to say a rpi4 4gb for ha os?
I'd personally suggest going with the 4GB even with it being an older model.
Others may have differing opinions, though.
the reason i brought up the rpi5 2gb is because i heard its newer than the other rpi5 and its more power efficient
I definitely wouldn't do less than 4GB, and I don't even have that much stuff in my HA install
Totally possible that in general it's better, but with HA I'd also say 4GB is gonna be better.
Would it still be #1284966353798697001 for enquiries about Thread enabled smart lights (even if not necessarily for HA)?
Also, a 4 shouldn't be taking up too much power.
Thread tag in there. 🙂
gotcha, just because I'm kinda done with these Hue shenanigans and gonna see about replacing them...
I am not sure but part of me feels that it would be bad to buy a rpi4 when the rpi5 is out 😄
I'm also starting to work through replacing my Razer gear (but the Naga Pro + Tartarus Pro will be difficult ones to figure out replacements for, especially the Tartarus Pro with its analogue switches, though interchangeable sideplates for the Naga Pro won't make things easy either)
it is!
but i do believe the rpi5 is much more power than the rpi4 as well though
what do you all think of the orange pi? i see them being much cheaper and more powerful
Looking at that, I'd say only get the 5 if you plan on going hard, but still 4GB.
Some people buy Pi 2s and run this stuff still.
So, if money isn't an object, get the Pi 5.
I use to own like 5 rpi3 but i sold them all several years ago
I’m more of a micro PC fan 🙂 An RPI fully equipped costs about the same as a refurbished PC. The power consumption can be great, and it’s much more durable over time.
yeah by the time you add a ssd hat you may as well get a mini pc
I am running HA right now off a n100 with docker but i was thinking to get ha seperate from this machine and onto a seperate lower power devices that i would leave on 24/7
I got a couple other minipc that i thought to run on , they are intel nuc but i tested their idle watts and they sit at 6w.. i saw that a lot of these devices could run much lower than that
your banging against power consumption vs performance here you gotta pick a side
Or just go all out on performance and build a dedicated solar setup for all of your computing needs.
I mean, who hasn't built a sustainable power plant to run HA with?
lol
urgh... ffs... trying to find information about if a specific product supports Matter and it's... not easy (parents already have them, but trying to see if they support Matter so I can bridge them all together)
I have a Dell Optiplex 5050 Micro (Core i5 7500T), it cost €120 with an SSD (256 GB) and RAM (2x4 GB). It consumes 8-9W in idle mode.
That's the only way I do things.
Plebs.
Exactly.
she says as she has her gaming PC hosting her ollama instance so that she has fast responses from a local LLM instead of relying on cloud LLMs
Looking jealousy to everyone with a local LLM with video card. My call screening voicemail runs with out
Gah... I've had to ask on the product page on Amazon for the product in question, because Google search is coming up blank
my "big" server only has a 1650 super, if i tried to run an llm on that i think it would cry. might upgrade it if i can get a cheap 2nd hand card during the next generation upgrade when it comes along early next year
i dont know, in this day and age, that feels like a very high idle power consumption
I wasn't using this PC because I abandoned Windows as quickly as I could when I got hired at NC.
Well, that’s it, but it runs quite a few Docker containers, the HA, has both an NVMe and a regular SSD, plus Zigbee/Bluetooth/WiFi, so that’s the total. I might even power a fixed motion sensor off it. It’s better than the previous setup 🙂 and I have no issues with speed. 8W is negligible, even with the horror of the new electricity bill.
It's actually a streaming PC so its GPU isn't as good as the CPU - but that's fine in my case.
I don't think I can run more than one on this device, though...pretty up there with RAM usage already.
As a follow up for others that might have questions (keywords: Reolink wifi doorbell camera app), here's some info I found:
- Don't tighten the plate down too much, it flexes easily and the doorbell won't mount
- You do need the app for wifi, but an account isn't needed so you can set it up easily
- If you have a chime already, it will not be triggered and you must use the included outlet unit
4a) RTSP info/url - https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/900000630706-Introduction-to-RTSP/
4b) RTMP info/url - https://support.reolink.com/hc/en-us/articles/23528840063769-Introduction-to-Real-Time-Messaging-Protocol-RTMP/
Thanks for the info 🙂
Hmm.. I can't seem to connect via RTSP/RTMP though... It's enabled per the UI both on the app and in the HTTPS server (which is working fine)... but yeah... can't connect via what the docs say
BTW for Reolink devices, you don't need a mobile app to connect to them. They also have desktop apps you can use for the setup, too :D
that is interesting information!
So I'm finally getting started with automations and it seems by default the dropdown only shows specific devices, not rooms/groups/helpers? How do I select a whole group of lights to control?
I just used the windows app to set up all my POE cameras. It made it a lot easier to dig through settings
make a group then use it
maybe the app isn't refreshing the list
nope, no 'kitchen lights' listed
there's the light control option instead of devices but it only provides on/off/toggle, no brightness etc?
maybe I should be editing yaml directly
best to start a thread in #1284980040940912641
I'll search there thanks
if I've had an open issue for a long time and there's no input, is it approprate to add a git hub issue on the integration (core)?
because... I did
Hi, are there any good books or extensive guides on Home Assistant out there? I saw this book Home Assistant: Das umfassende Handbuch(Home Assistant: The Complete Handbook) but I unfortunately can't read German. That's kind of what I'm looking for though
well... found a new potential switch for £150
from UniFi... 16 ethernet ports of which 8 are PoE
various youtube guides is probably the best place to start to be honest. as you learn you will learn how to search for what you need to know
whats your switch requirements?
Mainly something that'll work with the Hue Bridge and has PoE (8 ports minimum). But I feel 16 ports would give me a lot of room to maneuver.
I'd plug my ATEM, HyperDeck, and both PCs (in the Enthoo case) in non-PoE ports. Pi 3B would probably be modified to use PoE and would use a PoE port, Hue Bridge would also be modified to do so.
poe+ vs poe++
1gbe vs 2.5gbe
sfp or no sfp
lots of variables when it comes to switches 😛
PoE type doesn't matter really... don't see myself needing more than 15.4 watts per port. 1GBE is fine. SFP not needed. The UniFi is PoE+ (so up to 30 watts per port, with a total supply across all ports of 45W)
ubiquiti stuff is awesome but you pay for the awesomeness
ehhh its not THAT awesome .. but i am fond of ubiquiti for the home gamer that wants a bit more than the regular SOHO networking gear
wait.. you're telling me this damn reolink doorbell will let you have an auto-reply voice message, but you can't change the noise it makes when someone rings it!??!?!
i have a tp link TL-SG1016PE in my rack at the moment. i am looking to replace it soon but only because i want to have a 2.5 poe switch. if you want something a bit cheaper then i can recommend that
I think I'd rather have the 16 ports tbh (please send any further communication to the thread I created rather than replying in this channel)
be careful with those responces if someone mishears then you get in trouble - https://www.independent.co.uk/tech/smart-home-lock-out-amazon-b2358107.html
this is another sell for home assistant but still could cause hastle i guess
well no one except me has access to my doorbell, so i'm not too worried abou tit
yeah its not the doorbell i am worried about. some delivery driver decides they heard something they didnt and boom amazon account goes boom (substitute amazon with xyz as required)
also automated messages saying "i'm not here" tell people your not there. you can see them breaking in on the camera but they are still breaking in
maybe i am just paranoid though
well, that actually started an FTC investigation into Amazon that causted them to pay out 5.8 million, so they can shut my account down if they want the smoke
anyway, i'm just frustrated you can't change the chime sound on the unit, but you can have it say things automatically if you don't answer... what kinda bass ackwards feature set is that?
it has the outlet chime, but that sounds like a grandma's doorbell more than anything, and lets you change it but they all suck
can you silence the chime and put your own sound in the "auto responce"?
could put up your own speaker and use HA to play whatever you want on button press
also, I don't think the Nest Doorbell lets you change the responses or the chime sound...
i use an esp32 to activate an old chime on bell press from ring bell through HA
the amcrest i had did, although they were also cheesy they were better than the reolink chime companion outlet thingy... i currently have it set to gas station sound
Makes me wonder if I could make it so if the Nest Doorbell rings, I get a phone call 😅
the app doesn't do that already? the amcrest and the reolink do that
i thought about trying to do this through pbx
I get a notification, but not a phone call
it's not a "phone call" persay, but it does pull up a answer/hangup interface with a preview, and then you just can talk, listen, and watch as you wish
I get a notification with a video preview (no sound), have to go into the app to reply
the plug in chime sound can be changed
they even released holiday sounds for it
i'm on latest firmware and don't see any of those... but, it's just weird you can't do it on the unit itself
you do change it on the unit I believe, not through the ui
santa is coming!
the chime sound, you change it by the button on the unit I believe
yes, it should have 3 buttons on it. one changes the chime and the other two are for volume
What's the point if I can do it in the app?
oh wait. you may have the V2 one
I forgot the released a second iteration that allows some of that to be changed through the app
afaik there's only one wifi model
anyway, the complaint is the main unit that the person presses - you can't configure that sound... just on or silent
they released a V2 of the chime unit
what? you can do that too
not in HA currently
how? i only have the switch to enable/disable
oh the ding dong
thought you were talking about the reply thing
you could disable the chime and just use whatever sound you wanted for the reply
on auto mode it triggers with each press
they released halloween sounds for that just this year
we were suppose to get a 4k variant of the doorbell this year
maybe they will add some more functionality to that when it does
eh this was cheap and the amcrest disentigrated
garbage
and not to mention that was like the 4th one because the firmware kept bricking itself... and i don't mean like an update.. it would just... die...
I turned the ir lights off my ad210 or whatever it was off
mine never activated anyway cuz of a street light
this is completely off topic but.. im thinking of getting in to unifi as i hear a lot of HA users are in to it. I was curious and this is probably a dumb question. the unifi u6+ is poe that connects to the unifi poe switch..does this also give the u6+ a wired backhaul or is that still wireless?
I found my first HA bug
ubiquiti 🤢
Added 'Samsung Smart TV' integration and the TV had the default name that included a doublequote (55" The Frame) and a bunch of stuff is breaking because of it, I can't rename it even
i don't use unifi but isn't that the point of a switch?
i have a u6-pro it is powered by and connects via its ethernet port. i am very happy with it
i'm guessing lol.. its powered by the switch but i was just curious
what does that mean lol
Once I get back to helping manage this building I'll be recommending an upgrade to UI's NVR, maybe upgrade a few cameras
poe doesnt replace the data lines. it runs on top of them
well im thinking of going to it from tplink x4300 pro. im having drop outs with it and after resets etc im just getting tired of it. plus mdns isnt working properly
unifi is alien to me. never had any of those products before
unifi keeps doing things right, they keep adding requested features
PD -> PSE (power delivery -> power sourcing equipment)
i am very happy with my u6-pro. and if i had to buy an AP now i would look at that or even the u7-pro
it's part of POE standard, it has to do both
yea i suspected it did.. like i said dumb question but it's just me being paranoid
I just hope they come up with a better intercom for buildings
better to ask for the peace of mind
ive only got a total of like 55 connected devices so didnt want to break the bank with the pro
I think unifi people rave about unifi to others so they can feel better about themselves suckering someone else to fall down that crap hole lol
i'm guessing..you don't like unifi
lol, to be fair i only have an AP. their switches look nice but they cost too much i think
unifi is like the apple of networking
otherwise save your money, and build a small switch yourself out of old office equipment
tplink must be the motorola then. because i'm hating it more everyday
my current wishlist includes a tplink - TL-SG3428XPP-M2 but i caant justify the £600 atm
i'm trying to avoid a server rack etc etc lol.
but the more shit i add the more it's starting to weigh
ibeacon tracker keeps tracking random nearby beacons lol
get one of those small wall hanging ones
stick it in a closet
a rack makes sense in the end because you can keep all your stuff neatly together instead of all about the place
any new stuff goes straight in and you have power and network right there ready to attach
depends how big you plan to go in the future mind
yea..makes sense except for the fact i didn't have that in mind when i ran the ethernet cables in the attic. trying to give myself an excuse to not go up there again and redo it
you think 2 u6+ would cover 1800sqft?
do you people just fish wires to the cieling or wall just hang those?
may depend on your walls but most likely fine
studs n sheetrock
fishing ethernet for me is a pain because i have pearl lines in the exterior walls. unfortunately im good with sheetrock
I go a bit beyond
if i can't fish it, it ain't happening.. i can't bring myself to have wires exposed like that
although that's just for the art displays
thats my thing i never think that far ahead lol. when i was running ethernet i didnt have HA yet...so yea
understairs cupbaord doubles as server room so it goes onto the wall with the ont
anyone use the orbi gear?
or is that heresy
i think overall im just done with mesh setups. they are nice for average use but seem problematic for anything more
stop dumping iot stuff onto your wifi
some people hate on using wifi for iot, but i havent had any issues with it.
it eventually impacts noticeable performance
to be fair i dont have any devices i would consider high throughput that are on wifi
That’s why I had to get an AP.
lol well that makes all the diffrence @dawn badge
yeah and having a decent AP
My HA follows the solar panels. No sun, no HA
Gosh the Aqara FP2 presence detector is so good
It just works once configured in app
Cant wait to permanently mounted it
@tidal bronze you about ready to run out front wearing a reindeer costume? https://youtu.be/LWjPR9oxqP0?si=HJqC8G4b40Xua0QL
Crazy Rocketman Bob Maddox wishing all a Merry Christmas.
Dashboard? Sorry I'm talking about a physical button, not the web interface
Then it depends entirely on the type of button and how it interfaces with HA
Zigbee, zwave, some WiFi thing, ESPHome, etc
wifi button? 😨
The only things allowed on my wifi are stuff that a) needs the bandwidth, and b) moves around. Laptops, phones, the occasional portable game system. Anything else, either it gets a cord or I go out and hunt down a Zigbee equivalent
omg. I just figured out a REALLY annoying issue! Story Time! 😁
I have automations that change lights on motion. I usually have the automation do a scene create with the light group before I make a change so I can restore it back to its original state after the motion finishes. Seems like a simple thing ¯_(ツ)_/¯
But.. I noticed that when some motion automations would run, the scene restore would work but the color was .. off (like more orange or more blue than expected). Since it was more or less working, I ignored it till tonight.
This morning I activated a new dusk light scene for xmas. It sets my west driveway light to green and the right driveway light to red. And tonight, when my automation detected motion in the driveway, my lights went to bright %100 and "daylight" color as the automation instructs. BUT THEN.. instead of the lights going back to xmas red/green, they BOTH went to a light blue color! WTF?!
So, it seems that if you scene:create a light GROUP entity, then when it restores the scene, it sets the color to be roughly the "average" of the light colors in the group! So in my case one bulb red, one bulb green means both bulbs restored to blue! 🤯
SO, I changed the scene create to include EACH LIGHT entity in the group, instead of the single group entity, and NOW it restores the lights to their individual colors! I'm now revisiting all my scene creates and changing out the group entity for the individual member entities to fix this. 🤦 Oh well, at least I solved a mystery! 😁😂🤣
a win is a win
I wonder if I should submit this one in the "WTH" thing this month 🤔
TBH the "fix" I am doing is really a work aorund. It makes it so I have to hunt entity group members down in automations if I change them..
e.g. if I replace a bulb in the "driveway" light group, then I would have to go remove/replace that single bulb in every scene:create 😦
light groups averaging seems like an intended behavior
well mine turns on from frigate seeing a person and then waits 5 minutes and turns it off again
Light group averaging means that if I have 4 bulbs that are set to red, green, blue, yellow, and I snapshot that group, when I restore it it does not restore it to the state of the snapshot. seems like it fails..?
putting things in a group together usually means that you want them to be the same thing
I mean, we have RGB bulbs for the specific purpose of making color palettes.. haviong a snapshot restore decide to just paint all bulbs with one color brush is weird.
individual lights in a scene is the correct way to go about it
I mean, yes, snapshoting each bulb does work- but it makes the "group" non-functional for snapshots.. its weird.
I mean, if I am a waiter, and customer 1 orders a large beer, and customer 2 orders a small beer, and then I return later and hand each of them a medium beer- I don't think they would be happy 😁😂🤣
i may be wrong but from what i understand a group is specifically for making things the same. if you don't want them to be the same then don't use a group (i dont want to come across as harsh but i think your using the wrong tool for the job)
I mean, if I snapshot a group, the members should be returned to the state of the snapshot.. not averaged together... its just weird..
on/off would work because you cant average that. but as soon as you mess with brightness/colour it will try to average those numbers to make everything in the group the same
I have a lot of lights with multiple bulbs in them... like Dining room Light has 3 bulbs, so I shouldn't make a dining room light group.. instead I should make all my automations call out individual members as the "right" way to do that? I mean.. my kitchen island has 5 bulbs and the back patio has four... in all these cases I should instead be calling each individual bulb in each automation?
No, I use groups for my dining room lights, but I want them all the same!
the idea is that if there is motion in the driveway, I turn the lights on high and bright for security.. but then they need to return to the previous state. The previous state depends on time of day and/or color palette
the scene:create was supposed to allow the automation to return the lights to whatever light/color/brightness they were before the scene engaged
dont dynamically create scene. just have 2. 1 for normal and 1 for driveway motion and use an automation to switch between them.
or do you change your "normal" setting on the regular?
I would still ditch the scene
I have a lot more than just 2 though... after sunset and before 10 pm they are certain bright/color.. after 10pm they go more orange and dimmer.. at mightnight they go to a nightlight till sunrise.. also if there is a football game, I change to the team colors.. if its hallloween its ornage and green, if its in December its green/red... so having the automation know what the light was before it ran is very difficult.. the scene:create seemd like the right approach but the group restore is NOT restoring to what it was which seems like a failure.. its not called "Light Group Average" - it seems like it should restore the entities in the group to each ones previous state.
learn how to make advanced scripts lol
also, my wife likes to play with color palettes in the living room. she makes lights look like this:
yeah i think your fundamentally misunderstand the point of a group. it means "i want to group these things together because i want them to be the same"
or similar... if I snapshot that room, I would expect it to return to those colors.. not jsut smear the room one color based on an average of the lights in the scene
so I am back to how do you group large numbers of RGB lights like as shown in the picture above?
wait, your trying to make each of the bulbs in the same fixture be a diffrent color while calling forth a helper group that combines them?
you could use a scene for that if you wanted but you have to individually put the bulbs into that scene because you want them to be different
That’s what I do.
I have a group of lights that individual entities are different colors. if you scene:create with the group entity, then restore that scene, it just sets all the individual bulbs to one color that was created by averaging all the different colors together. SO if you have agroup of two RGB bulbs, one is set to full red, one is set to full green, then you scene:"create that group, and resture it, both bulbs turn BLUE.
Tedious but works the best.
Is that just a lightbulb hanging from a wire?
it was a random example I grabbed from google.. I don't know if thats how they did it.. it was an example of a group of lights all with slightly different colors
yea you can't call forth a helper group in that way
Oh so it's ai generated
"pendant light" fairly common (in the uk anyway)
-# I think it’s just an example image…I was right. 😂
Lol
lights that are in a group are basically smushed as a single light in essence
Pendants normally aren't in the middle of a living room though and have a shade over them
have seen them in living room but your right, they usually have a shade
I can see that it is doing that, but again it seems like itas not the right way to implement this. If I have 5 lights in a group, and I scene:create, those 5 lights should be restored to what they were pre-snapshot.
Nope
not the way it works
i am going to leave it here, you have been told your doing it wrong and won't accept it.
for example, if I have a wall sconce with one bulb pointed UP and one pointed DOWN and I have the up bulb at 50% and the down bulb at %100 so the path is lighted better than the ceiling, if I scene:create and restore it then both bulbs would be set to 75% which is NOT restoring its state
We get what you’re saying. It’s not correct.
in that situation you don't group the lights. you just scene capture each enity and call forth the scene
the scene itself in a way "groups" the enities in it
I hate scenes.. have i mentioned that yet?
1000x easier to just make a script that involkes the light turn_on to each enity/group seperatly
This is eactly what I did and it works at this point.

The point I making is this-
If you were writing a program and you had an array of variables called "Group" and in variable Group(1) you stored a value "1" and in Group(2) you stored a value 100, and then you read back the value for Group(1) and it was 50, you would think the program was broken. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
no
No, you’d read the documentation of both the group and the scene features and realize “I didn’t understand this”
Scenes are difficult, but once you know how to use them they’re fine.
introduce your new variations of groups known as blobs
I only fucked up twice.
groups in hue and groups in tp-link and groups in amazon echo all restore the member states.. this is the first system I've encountered that works like this. its so weird..
thats cause how they are grouped is done diffrently
😁😂🤣
But they do.
it only took the person who created them out of thin air to explain how to use them did things click huh? what about the rest of us?!
Long time users don’t understand our pain, @ember heart.
Snashot scene of RED bulb and GREEN blub
Restore scene: Blue bulb!
wtf??
HAOS: "working as designed"
🤦
now see that's out of context
Because you’re controlling them as one bulb in your example
I legit only learned how to use them properly last week. And I’m grateful we’re making it so the scenes don’t activate when you edit them this release.
when you snap shot a group it's not a red bulb and a green bulb.. it's one bulb
