My favourite solution for this is monitor.

Only catch is that you depend on fixed MAC addresses and, by default, newer phone OSs randomise MAC addresses for privacy. But if you're trying to check whether members of your household are home or not, just get them to change the setting to fixed MAC.

most phone OS's to randomise the MACS but they also usually save the mac and use that random address for that network. so until something causes it to rerandomise (reconfiguring network or reinstall OS or something) it works just fine

Can I gush a bit about my retrogaming setup? I'm just so happy about how it all works right now.
Got a nuc-like running Batocera connected to the TV. That runs pretty much everything up to Switch and PS3 almost flawlessly. With high-res hacks for PSX and everything.
It also has dos emulation for Dungeon Keeper and Wine for Stardew Valley. And if that's not enough it has Moonshine so I can stream games from my PC.
A PS4 controller and an 8bitdo Ultimate which starts everything up when I pick it up from the charging cradle.

Then there's an Anbernic rg35xx-h which runs a version of batocera. So that runs everything up to PSX/N64 on the go. It also has Stardew Valley.

Finally, everything runs through synthing to keep saves and even save states synced between devices and my PC.
It's sooo smooth

which is I harassed a local ISP for two months until they gave me fiber

politely, mind you. I was never rude. But I didn't go away.

by pure speeds offered, they're actually the fastest ISP in the nation, and I was apparently in their coverage area, but they'd never bothered to actually lay the fiber lines down the small private road

so when I moved from Chicago, where I had AT&T fiber, to Washington, I was stuck with....Comcast's terrible options

Like hell I was gonna accept that when I need high speed internet for my job, so I spent literally two months politely hounding Ziply, the local government's permit board, the digging subcontractors, etc until they trenched fiber to my house

I literally called up the subcontractor and got to someone in a position who clearly NEVER was expecting to talk to a customer to let them know "hey, you need to resend that permit PDF. You locked it, so the local board can't paste the "Approved" image onto it."

And that's why my shitshack of a house has availability to get 50 gig symmetrical fiber, if I wanted to pay for it.
