creating variations of your existing dashboard to include holiday visuals would be a lot of work.

Can I gush a bit about my retrogaming setup? I'm just so happy about how it all works right now.
Got a nuc-like running Batocera connected to the TV. That runs pretty much everything up to Switch and PS3 almost flawlessly. With high-res hacks for PSX and everything.
It also has dos emulation for Dungeon Keeper and Wine for Stardew Valley. And if that's not enough it has Moonshine so I can stream games from my PC.
A PS4 controller and an 8bitdo Ultimate which starts everything up when I pick it up from the charging cradle.

Then there's an Anbernic rg35xx-h which runs a version of batocera. So that runs everything up to PSX/N64 on the go. It also has Stardew Valley.

Finally, everything runs through synthing to keep saves and even save states synced between devices and my PC.
It's sooo smooth

Hello, I'm looking to buy some Knobs and Dimmers to complement my smart home.

I found one knob with display (first one) that supports offline control, which means Tuya isn't necessary, right? The second one, however, definitely requires Tuya, which is a bit disappointing since it looks great.

Also I want to ask

The best way to stay secure with home automation is to only buy devices that use local protocols, Zigbee and Zwave for example.

quick hedge
keen bridge
#

Then they don't have internet connections to be worried about ๐Ÿ˜‰

verbal olive
#

Faaaaaaack, yeah, you're right

keen bridge
verbal olive
#

I've just got numerous Hue bulbs and a couple of Kasa switches

keen bridge
#

Hue is Zigbee.

verbal olive
#

....OH GOD YOU'RE RIGHT

#

my brain is off

#

I PLUGGED IN the bridge last night

quick hedge
keen bridge
#

Kasa is fine security wise. I don't love WiFi devices, but I have some of their plugs and they're fine.

verbal olive
#

I've got a couple of HS200P3s

#

admittedly, I only really use one to automate some outdoor lights, and the others so I don't have to get out of bed to turn off my bedroom/office lights

#

Want to do more, but as always, "where's the time"

crisp oriole
verbal olive
dawn badge
#

i had some issues with kasa smart plugs going unresponsive. i also dont entirily trust tp-link to keep them locally controllable. given they are leaning more into cloud controlled tapo than the local controlled kasa. they might decide to push an "upgrade" to make the kasas "now work with tapo" etc...

verbal olive
#

I mean, if they do that and I'm trying to stay local, I'm tearing them out of the wall and replacing them

#

I'm striving for more local control, not less

dawn badge
#

i am turning into a bit of a shelly shill these days. but their stuff is great

verbal olive
#

literally every tech nerd I know is a shill for something

#

we all have our favorites

#

one of my buddies is infatuated with ubiquiti stuff

#

actually, deadass, I'm finding it hard to disagree with him, we just found a RIDICULOUSLY good deal yesterday

dawn badge
#

ubiquiti is great but you pay for it

verbal olive
#

any of you seen this?

#

that's a MANAGED multi-gig switch for 49 bucks

dawn badge
#

yeah some of their smaller stuff is fine. and i love my U6-Pro. but their rack stuff is a little too expensive to justify

verbal olive
#

I've heard similar criticisms

#

still though

#

I will admit the surprise of the network ports lighting up all fancy was pretty nifty

#

I can't go super all-out on my current place, it's a rental

#

even with my very "ehhh, who cares as long as you're not knocking walls down" landlord, there's limits to what's wise to do

#

but I am 100% building my ass a tiny server room if my girlfriend and I get our own place

dawn badge
#

yeah, dont do anything you cant easily undo in a rented place

verbal olive
#

I had one exception to that

#

I put Cat6A in the walls

#

the place didn't have any ethernet, only really fucked up coax

#

got permission from the landlord, and I was 100% able to expense it on my taxes because it was vital for my work

dawn badge
#

thats fair. as long as its done right. if anything its a perminent improvement

verbal olive
#

Been 3 years, no complaints so far

#

oh, also had to muck with the wiring in my office a bit

#

had an engineer friend help me out so I didn't burn the house down

#

the power outlets for some reason were wired to the fucking wall switch

#

so whenever I turned off my lights

#

IT TURNED OFF MY MINIFRIDGE TOO

dawn badge
#

someone had a lamp there at some point i guess and wanted it that way

verbal olive
#

Actually, we traced the wires

forest edge
#

@tidal bronzewas not bad at all! the turkey was succulent and they made a cornbeard dressing/stuffing that was pretty good. would do again

verbal olive
#

every other room in the house is normal

#

this room was clearly finished in a fucking hurry

forest edge
#

didn't think to take a picture for you

verbal olive
#

it didn't even have neutral wires

#

also, the power comes from the breaker and is distributed, like a normal room

#

but the distribution port is....in the ceiling

#

above the fucking ceiling fan and lights

dawn badge
#

neutrals at switches is a bit hit and miss depending on age and country

verbal olive
#

EVERY OTHER ROOM in the house has neutrals

#

just not the two switches in the room I actually work and live in

#

My engineer friend was swearing at whatever coked-up 80s home builders made this shit

dawn badge
#

chaos

verbal olive
#

you can tell this shit was not built to code, the ceiling measurements aren't even

#

you can tell stuff isn't QUITE level in places

#

stuff isn't even finished in some places

#

but....rent is cheap for the area

#

and the house is big

#

and more importantly: I live down a short, but VERY steep and curvy private road

#

which leads into a heavily forested area

#

I NEVER get bothered unless I want to. Most people don't even know I'm here.

#

I step outside and it looks like I'm in Pacific Drive

forest edge
#

if it's not flying above or roasted and still smoking dead on the ground then it cannot possibly have feathers amirite?

verbal olive
#

OKAY

#

OKAY

#

so I'm not the only person who thinks turkey is really overrated

#

It's not that it's bad I just think there's better thanksgiving options

#

that don't leave me with weeks of leftovers

tidal bronze
#

IT IS BAD. Should never be near any table.

forest edge
# iron granite

forest edge

tidal bronze

I thought no one was going to show up and now it's a mess. Lol. Excuses didn't work.

verbal olive
#

my biggest problem with turkey

#

is

#

it's fucking DRY

forest edge
#

so learn to cook it

verbal olive
#

if you don't prep it well

#

and my ass is family to some of the worst midwestern-ass cooks known to man

#

So I grew up with dry-ass bird

#

made me hate it

same with salmon, because it was like the only fish they cooked

#

it's not that salmon is bad, I'm just sick of it

most online creators who deal with home automation or high-level technical stuff are...not great

Linus is probably the biggest YT'er that has done a video with Home Assistant involved. And he has probably hurt HA's reputation more than anyone else lol.

verbal olive

the hell did he say? I didn't even know he knew about it

crisp oriole
#

Linus cant even read a console prompt

verbal olive
#

Linus is likely suffering the same shit that everyone who gets too big or successful online gets

coarse horizon
#

He did several videos about installing motion Z-Wave switches on every switch in his home.

verbal olive
#

brainrot

coarse horizon
#

Like 50+ or whatever. And he documented just how frustrating and problematic it all was.

#

Which of course made everyone think that smart home and HA itself is probably not worth it.

verbal olive
#

Maybe it's because he's an idiot at this point

#

once you get too much money, or too large of a crowd of people fawning on your every word, stuff starts to degrade

#

I guarantee you most of what Linus does now is not tech stuff, it's marketing and management

#

he's running the LTT "brand"

#

It's like what happened with Elon, if you take away the fact that he's always been a shitty person

dawn badge
#

linus has to dumb stuff down so much for the widely targeted audiance and branding its difficult to tell where he actually stands these days.

verbal olive

I'm sure he actually knew how to program and the like at one point, but all those skills are gone

it gets a bit frustrating how much it can fuck up your brain

tidal bronze
coarse horizon
#

I've sunk a ton of hours into HA and it has been fun and worth it.

#

I think I spend too much time trying to think of new automation ideas that aren't even necessary. I just find it fun though.

quick hedge
# tidal bronze How long since you started with HA?

Few years. I often give up on trying to progress with it and leave everything "acceptable" because I've burnt out. It's one thing to tweak, it's another thing when it's affecting functionality of your home in the process.

crisp oriole
tidal bronze
quick hedge
#

The irony was most recently that I've been swapping out some Tuya lights with matter ones because Tuya worked fine with Alexa but has been horribly unreliable with HA. Anyway, after a few weeks of having swapped over a few, the HA matter container just stopped working, so now I don't even have control of them at all.

coarse horizon
#

Just yesterday I moved some zigbee buttons around. And they were working just fine despite being further away from their router.

tidal bronze
#

Tuya, oh boy.

solar zealot
coarse horizon
#

But when the LQI finally updated. I was bothered by the low number and re-paired them just so the LQI would be higher lol.

quick hedge
#

99.99% of devices available here appear to be Tuya, that's the issue.

keen bridge
#

Cheap WiFi devices are nearly always Tuya.

#

Their Zigbee devices are somewhat better, but not good either.

tidal bronze
#

Honestly I don't use tuya or anything zigbee with my production system. So I can't comment on that.

coarse horizon
#

You mean no Zigbee Tuya devices, or no zigbee devices?

keen bridge
#

Tuya is 3 raccoons in a trenchcoat pretending they've created a standard, but too busy not doing anything to make the device manufacturers using it uphold it.

crisp oriole
#

I miss clicked some zigbee devices and bought some wifi power switches that where tuya. they work great.

keen bridge
coarse horizon
#

I'm using a bunch of Zigbee devices that would have used tuya if I used a gateway.

dawn badge
#

spending a little more to get something better is almost always worth it. but it depends what you have available to you i guess

coarse horizon
#

They're all working fine as far as I can tell.

crisp oriole
#

aleast you dont have to update your development trial licence of tuya anymore to keep ha working

tidal bronze
coarse horizon
#

I'm too poor for Z-wave lol. Which is why I only have one Z-wave device while I have 35 zigbee devices.

#

Mostly from Aliexpress that I bought for 5-10 bucks a piece. That's what us poors gotta do man.

dawn badge
#

i have had only negative experiences with zigbee BUT i do admit to only trying a few very cheap devices. ill probably give it a go again at some point. but for now i have pretty much only wifi devices

keen bridge
#

Aqara Zigbee devices are pretty cheap but very nice.

tidal bronze
#

Started with x10 probably in 2002 so I know a thing or two. ๐Ÿ˜†

keen bridge
#

Plus in my experience, trying to do it all at once is too much. It's better to solve one problem and figure out a good way to do it and then replicate that across the other similar problems

coarse horizon
#

I spent several years on my previous smart home. Then replaced nearly everything after I started using HA a year ago.

dawn badge
coarse horizon
#

I'd love to get higher quality stuff. But I don't think my wife can ever accept me wanting to spend $1000 on light switches even if spread over years lol.

tidal bronze
#

It's worth it.

keen bridge
#

The trick is to get her (and any other family) hooked somehow.

verbal olive
#

oh god, I come back, this convo is too real

keen bridge
#

Find something with a "wow" factor that you can set up to work with polish and then replicate that in other areas. If the implantation is genuinely great people tend not to mind spending the money for the good stuff.

verbal olive
#

also, goddamned Tuya

#

I might have to huck out the bluetooth devices from them because I can't get them to work

tidal bronze
verbal olive
#

might need a zigbee one

#

I'm stuck though, because I need the specific form factor of something they make

pysical buttons is a winner with non technical people too. "press button and x happens" is very simple to grasp

dawn badge
#

i like using dashboards for infomation/status of stuff but not nessasarily control

keen bridge
# verbal olive

The arm does the same thing. The stick on part is only necessary if it's on a switch instead of a button

coarse horizon
#

I put it right next to a ESP32 BT proxy and it's pretty fast. Almost always consistently 1 second so I'm happy with that.

tidal bronze
#

I am fully against any visual dashboard for a fully automated house

verbal olive
#

it's a REALLY specific use case

keen bridge

Mine is the same width and actually slightly shorter in the height of the body than the other ones

I just remembered the probably best "networking" thing I ever did

#

which is I harassed a local ISP for two months until they gave me fiber

#

politely, mind you. I was never rude. But I didn't go away.

#

any of y'all heard of Ziply Fiber?

#

(you likely have not if you're not in the PNW)

#

by pure speeds offered, they're actually the fastest ISP in the nation, and I was apparently in their coverage area, but they'd never bothered to actually lay the fiber lines down the small private road

#

so when I moved from Chicago, where I had AT&T fiber, to Washington, I was stuck with....Comcast's terrible options

#

Like hell I was gonna accept that when I need high speed internet for my job, so I spent literally two months politely hounding Ziply, the local government's permit board, the digging subcontractors, etc until they trenched fiber to my house

#

I literally called up the subcontractor and got to someone in a position who clearly NEVER was expecting to talk to a customer to let them know "hey, you need to resend that permit PDF. You locked it, so the local board can't paste the "Approved" image onto it."

#

And that's why my shitshack of a house has availability to get 50 gig symmetrical fiber, if I wanted to pay for it.

#

(I do not, it's like 900 dollars a month)

they have not advanced quickly

mostly focused on enthusiasts, but that focus means they benefit from the attention of most of the actual talent in home automation

So they've quietly amassed a tech advantage that trumps the other offerings out there. The only things that stopped that from being widely available is that it's not as easy to use as something more plug and play

#

now that that's changing, I see more people paying attention to it

lone dagger

It's still not nearly as plug and play as we want it to be. I'm still very much new to this shit. I'm technical but this is a different level for me.

the ocd about is quite humorous

verbal olive
#

if you want stuff that's built to last, you gotta pay for it these days

#

and do a bunch of research to actually FIND it

lone dagger
forest edge
#

I seriously didn't even see it in the first picture lmao

shell basalt
#

especially since you could write/find some image processing that will digitally erase it

lone dagger
#

I dunno if we can do that during live streams...

forest edge
#

it's black friday.. the camera is giving you an excuse

shell basalt
#

yeah.. capitalism! consumerism!

verbal olive
shell basalt
#

find that camera that's marked down 50% after raising the price 100%!

verbal olive
#

I know people who do a fuckton of post-processing before OBS puts their video out

forest edge
#

instead of doing any of what these people are suggesting.. i say you make it bigger.. maybe add some additional ones to form a smile face or something

verbal olive
#

that's actually why I ended up doing vtubing

shell basalt
#

yeah and I think OBS has hooks that allow image processing too

crisp oriole
verbal olive
#

the culture I could do without, but the tech is fascinating

shell basalt
verbal olive
#

I'm too disorganized to use those price watch sites

#

actually, my push for HA usage is kinda related to that

#

the more automation I do, the easier it is to organize my stuff

forest edge
#

like wtf is that

verbal olive
#

I...don't know

crisp oriole
verbal olive
#

it's only got the one picture

lone dagger
forest edge
#

use a marker to circle it so everyone on the next stream can enjoy what you will obviously be thinking and looking at during the whole stream lmao

lone dagger
#

Well, the good news is that dinner is almost ready and I can stop messing with this.

shell basalt
#

i'm still processing my late lunch/early thanksgiving dinner since I was on my own .. body kind of wants to go into another food coma

verbal olive
#

never heard of Streamyard, jeez

forest edge
#

thats why I always eat early. need the rest of the day to be active to burn off enough to even be able to sleep

verbal olive
#

I guess I take OBS for granted a bit

#

also, fixed my issue, lol

forest solstice
#

Does home assistant natively support Apple Silicon yet?

verbal olive
#

should have done this in the first place, just deleted the server and re-added it

forest solstice

#

Alr I got a Mac mini I'mma install it in then

crisp oriole
#
lone dagger
verbal olive
#

also, anyone have experience using HA for adblocking?

#

I tried a long time ago, couldn't figure it out, gave up

forest solstice
#

Ye, I've been seeing a lot of LLM stuff on the HA Facebook group but I really don't want to pay cloud costs

crisp oriole
#

There is an addon for addblocket

verbal olive
#

but with google continuing to be horrible, I kinda wanna revisit it

verbal olive
#

also might move my shit to firefox

#

chrome is kinda ass these days and firefox is the only one that'll let the old ublock origin version work

verbal olive
#

unlesss the HA setup makes it necessary

crisp oriole
verbal olive
# primal laurel

yeah, that's what I've got on my instance, just...could not for the life of me figure out how to make it work

forest solstice
verbal olive
#

I can probably figure it out with enough work, just wondering if it's WORTH it

primal laurel
#

like this was 1 minute work

verbal olive
#

oh sure, I'm just a dumbass and my knowledge is spotty

#

the DNS config is where I got lost

crisp oriole
verbal olive
#

if I remember correctly, it's been years

verbal olive
primal laurel
#

just google it

#

its not hard

verbal olive
#

I know dude, I'll figure it out

primal laurel
#

you could have fixed it already in the time spent talking here haha

verbal olive
#

this ain't for tech support, I was more asking about how people's experiences with it have been

#

tech companies have been playing a lot of bullshit games trying to kill adblockers, wondering how this has fared in the face of it

forest edge
#

chrome runs weird on some sites now

#

even on amazon

#

I dunno why they had to go and ruin it

crisp oriole
#

On my travel laptop i use falkon a lightweight qt browser works great.

Untill the new beta arived

verbal olive

the natural life cycle of tech products in the current state of the industry

#

I'd stopped caring as much about stuff like this until I finally left twitter earlier this month

#

I'm on Bluesky now, and I'm actually ENJOYING posting for the first time in forever

#

you don't realize how much just absorbing stuff passively online, whether toxicity, ads, or other stuff kinda leaks into your brain

#

so now I wanna shove all that stuff out as much as possible for my own mental health

Found another video in Korean that shows the same method for the A6000

lone dagger

The only difference is the number the date/time option is under.

4 on the A6000 instead of 5.

But it's gone! ironmouseHYPE

I use to do a bit of astrophotography. Hot pixels are easier to fix in camera than in post.
