surely they been updated by now...
One would think… buuuuuuutttt lol
oh keen was a shark tank thing
I use my Ecowitt weather station to know if it's raining. Don't know if Aqara has anything but it would not sutprise me.
I usually look outside
Lots of stuff to read in the cookbook fir those starting out, @sweet dock
https://community.home-assistant.io/t/the-home-assistant-cookbook-index/707144
But that doesn't trigger HA to tell you it's raining, or remind you it's raining when there is a package or doordash delivered so it does't get wet.
I have an input Boolean that I toggle I'd it's raining
No I don't own anything horizontal so I actually don't care that it rains
It also has a light sensor to tell me it's dark, or to tell the motion lights it's dark rather.
This is the only one I’ve seen
how amazing how many things HAOS seems to automate...
From now on, whenever someone brings up that smart home locks "aren't secure" I'm going to link them to this: https://youtu.be/lod_LUp3ggc
"Security is only as good as its weakest link"
It'll (probably) never be the smart lock that the weakest link 🤣
Always carry a pocket knife, unless you are eating ice cream on a plane that is.
I know ways of opening it from the bottom without a trace
lol, seems like a race to pick it before it melts into a puddle
what the TSA doesn't know won't hurt them 😉
Phrasing, BOOM!
argh, I guess I’m going to have to move my thermostat schedule back to Nest itself
The stupid cloud API is too unreliable [to do scheduling in home assistant]
I'm really hating zwave right now grumble, sometimes simplier is better
what are people using to flash esp with in linux? can't get pip installed in linuxmint 22
I used to use tasmotizer
try pipx – it worked magically always for me
anybody know how to see disable helpers in the UI? I set it to disabled and it is gone! Don't see anything in the filters to show disabled either...
check entities panel
yeah... found it. not the most intuitive way of managing that imo, but... did get there after 10 mins of research.
Thank you for answering. I appreciate it. 😄
hey all - I'm on day 3 of learning home assistant and I'm trying to "reverse lookup" documentation to discovered solutions I've parsed together. For example, I was able to figure out {{ states('sensor.h5075_1b97_temperature') }} was the right state template value I needed for a conversion, but I'd like to know where in the documentation I would have been able to identify that's what I wanted
Also https://jinja.palletsprojects.com/en/stable/. Please note however that this in not a support channel (read the description).
yah I didn't see a "general documentation" channel so that's why I ended up here
yes I looked through that and nothing fit categorically to what I was after, either way I have my answer now
thank you
@quick tree I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
@quick tree why? Better off with low power intel system with quicksync
and AMD X3D chip
Also maybe #the-workshop.
That too, sorry
That’s why I’m asking lol been on a Mac train for like 4 years so I’m not sure what’s good
@quick tree i would not buy this
Appreciate it that’s what I needed to know
On commical note, you don't realize how dependent you are on home automation until it goes boom
For the life of me can't get docker zigbeemqtt to pass through the controller, I've given up and just ordered a POE one, since I was having issues previously anyhow
I just sit in the dark trying to figure out what went wrong
yeah, kinda where I am, ceiling fans don't work, smart bulbs don't work because the lamps they are in don't have switches on them(mother in law prevention) sooooo movie night on the 120" projector I guess lol
watch tyson gas out in 2 minutes
No I expect Jake Paul to get knocked the fuck out. 🤣
Hopefully
All we can really do is hope. 😆
What time is the main event
11 ET supposedley
that many
Playing with my LLM instance and the wrong screen was open.
@tender prism I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
qwen2.5-coder:32b is good
I avoided it BC I wanted language, not coding for what I'm using it for. Also don't think I can run a 32b at speed.
Thinking about gemma too
Bambu Labs P1P is a solid printer right? First printer.
I have cats, so not sure the movable A1 bed would be great. Would make for jumpy cats
I have a strict rule, and that is that if I get a 3D printer setup, I'm going to build it into something like a Brimnes wardrobe so it's closed off and contained, and so I can build a ventilation duct into the side of it that can go out a window.
3D printers are bad for your lungs. Definitely with standard ones, but 1000% with resin ones. Both should be in decently well ventilated spaces and neither should be in sleeping areas unless you duct them out.
That said, ducting is easier than it sounds. Step one, cut a hole in the cabinet, step two, get one of those AC vent kits, that you use for freestanding portable ACs, step 3, find a AC powered box fan, you can find small ones that will fit that 5.9 hole easily, and bam, there you go.
If you're feeling up to the task of automation, which I would think so in this channel, you can even set it up so that the cabinet automatically turns on the fan under certain conditions. Either if a print is running, or maybe if the temperature inside the cabinet is too high, or stuff like that.
I don't know how you could sleep with a 3d printer going in your room, just from noise >.>
I could also put it in the garage with a custom exhaust setup, and that would mean an A1 would probably be fine
Wouldn't need to worry about small paws without thumbs then either
if that is an option you should do that anyways
however if it gets clod in the garage that will impact prints
cold
I have 100mm, 125 and 160mm vent pipe left over
It is part of the house... how cold are you talking? I keep it about 13C at worst, it is 18C now and has a radiator (that I am too tight to keep on all the time)
It is only meant to be frost proof atm
Although, I read the P1P could be enclosed and even print abs, I don't have a desire to print it now, but may in the future
but if you get into the more interesting filimanets then the ambient cold temps can play a role
I may have to stop being tight then
What room temp would be ok for abs? If the printer is enclosed
in an enclosure you should be fine
also for FDM printers, ventilation isn't critical. Having the printer in a larger room works just fine, and a garage is even better
Having it in the cold however will mess every up
Even if they are in enclosures those are more to protect from air pushing on stuff in ways it should not than they would keep the heat in
Your most definitely not getting decent results on stuff that goes up when it's less than 20c in the room

does anyone know what integration gives the entity tts.openai_tts_shimmer?
My main server doesn't have any extra usb ports available for the zigbee usb, can I plug it in a raspberry pi and connect it through the network?
The pi could run Zigbee2MQTT and you could integrate it that way. Post in #1284966617670881350 for more.
you can use zigbee to lan adapter look at official zigbee2mqtt supported devices
Thanks
Well. Happy 20th birthday to Half-Life 2 today!
ugg make me feel so old
lol same
HL3 confirmed?
still trying to figuree out how to disasemble the Tapo Robo vacuum lol
i got all the screws, i'm thinking i need to remove the "bumper" bar, but i can't see how
ok got it
Top needs to come off
sneaky
There is some tuya vacuum thats always tries to connect to my tuya network. What can i do to tell the owners to bind there device.
make a blog for it that you hope the owners see
Lol
Lost vacuum diaries
Fan is ded. Ofc the right replacement is nowhere to be found
#the-workshop might be able to help
I remember picking it up IRL, on a disk
Big hammer!
I rebelled and played it on xbox
I played HL1 first on PS2, so I think we are equalky rebelious
Yes its open already thnx lol
can anyone help? can't get my mower to show up in my Husqvarna account, so it isn't showing up in HA. any tips?
The only automation you'll get from that is training a raccoon to drive it
Then just add the raccoon integration
I haven't been able to find one who can reach the pedals yet
It is a year younger than me, needs a fuel pump, I think, it seems to lose prime
Have you tried training 3 raccoons? One for each pedal and one for the steering wheel
Why didn't I think of this omg
Just needed a different perspective!
the 3 raccoons can even wear a trenchcoat if you need them to look more human like
bold of you to assume anybody at Valve can count that far
I set off a week to play HL1 so I could finish it before the release of HL2.
Also, apparently Warcraft is 30 years and a day today.
Quick question for anybody using smart switches, just want to be sure this setup will work: I want to use a smart switch to primarily control a smart lightbulb and some other IoT devices in the room, without necessarily actually cutting power to the circuit, allowing the switch to turn off the light but leave my ceiling fan powered and running overnight, only actually turning the circuit off when specifically commanded to by HA. Is this something that smart switches generally are capable of? I've never used one, only smart plugs, so I just want to be sure what I want to do will be possible before I buy a bunch of parts.
#1284966353798697001 might know
Oooh!
PSA: in case you can’t find your CD from back in the day, HL2 is currently FREE on steam.

Just a simple compliment, Not really looking for help, or anything, but I am loving the WebRTC. I use Wyze Cams and Docker-Wyze-Bridge and then setup the cams. Before this, they were about 5 to 6 second delay before you saw the motion when testing. Now, with it, its less than 1 second. 🙂 Super Nice! I use them inside, so they are almost always off, but eventually will be on full tim ewhen we relocate probably so I look forward to then!
Poor Tim, having all those cameras pointed at him
don't knock self voyeurism.. it's very arousing
i was debugging discord notifications for the last 15 minutes and found out why it was saying unknown error
discord is breaking right now
yeaaah. I still need to figure out discord notifications too
does the services section still exsist under developer tools
Would probably stop my neighbour from shooting them
They have many many excellent pins oh my
Quick question, is selectattr limited to 3 attributes?
if I add 'playing' it doesn't seem to work here: selectattr('state', 'eq', 'idle'')`
#1284966664357810196 can help with that
Okay, I thought I save time asking here then creating a post, lol
no worries, just want yes or no, not too sure about racoons in trenchcoat tho
Maybe quick questions threads would be a good idea, for those who don't want to start a whole new post that'll have a single one word answer
I think the number of questions that genuinely have a one word (or one sentence) answer is quite small. There's usually clarification or follow up that results. Isn't it about the same amount of effort for a new post vs to find an existing thread and post in there, too?
And then the quick question escalates to a >1000 messages mess.
Well, you have the mess there or here, lol. There will always be mess :)
This is something we did on another large discord, and those threads are a bit of a mess, but it has helped at least keep convos to the correct topics
That's effectively what the old discord was. I think leaving a decision like that to the person that asks the question won't end well. You'll end up getting questions like "Why isn't my SSL working?" in the quick questions thread.
And for those, we direct them to make a post. As it is, those questions are getting posted here currently
The "quick questions" thread would just move the problem. It solves nothing.
My thoughts are even that wouldn't stop the questions posted in this channel, the problem would actually be spread.
isn't that whats already being done as is? lol
Nope. At the moment it's fairly well corralled. Admittedly it would be nice if people actually read the landing page in discord when joining the server, but we can't force people to help themselves.
I would love to know how many people actively try searching for an answer prior to making a post vs the old way
Yeah, users will never actually do that lol. And it's not nothing. You're giving another path for a finite number of users to take. You're redirecting some, certainly not all, of the flow
you know if the uptick of people posting in here has increased due to <name that reason> already then surely they are going to struggle searching for answers because that method is all counter inititive lol
ugh they are going too far with automated text messages
You ever have one of those ah ha moments, just had one with automations
Atleast it isnt that bad searchable as Facebook.
I didn't know people tried searching facebook
Imagine using Facebook
Amsterdam durft te vragen. (Amsterdam dares to ask) is my favorite group in facebook
Well now I feel stupid, bought a SMLIGHT SLZB-06 was annoyed it didn't work over POE..... yeah I bought the non POE version, guess I'll have a backup for just in case(ordering POE version from Alliexpress for 40 dollars cheaper then amazon)
the poe version can be both too. you can plug power into the usb port for non poe lan lol
and same price
Not the best hardware but still a thought to have
not sure how trustworthy the seller is
Generally that's a terrible CPU, but 26 bucks is only 26 bucks
Pretty sure that's from the same family as the control plane CPU in my network switch 😆
2013 Jaguar, sounds PS4 ish
Probably good enough for homeassistant
Should be better than a pi hehe
I've re-used old Dell thin clients of a similar performance bracket (4C Celeron J4xxx) before though, totally doable
Usually storage is the only big question. The Dell ones had space for a SATA m.2 drive
I know, but the location I wanted to put the cordinator has no outlets nearby and I'd rather not run a 15 foot USB power cord
wtf is a mit Netzteil?
With power brick
Its German
Yea you see it in the second image
just saying, out of option you picked the wrong one because if you had accidently ordered the poe one but wanted the non poe one, you would be still good to go lol
Yep unfortunately
every damn year I work on trying to setup the next year ready to go holiday season automations and every damn year I still have to mess with it!!
honestly just use a zigbee switch to turn on the tree..... but we don't decorate much
I just fixed the Christmas tree lights adapter. I was too cheap to buy a new one
Had to crack it open. They are definately not made to be fixed
Just needed 2 new caps tho so i just glued it back together. Its fine :p
lol
we went big this year. twinkly tree
wish they made adpaters for the prelit trees.. dumb that if you have a lit tree toper you gotta run a wire down the tree
prelit trees? They ship them burning?
Really having my whoel system go boom and building from scratch is making me learn so much more, and also realize I make things so much harder on myself(hello labels)
they need to make a plug adapter that can go between the segments with a plug or something
altho not sure how that would work with the twinkly tree since they are all independent leds
Aren't those super expensive
Do they at least be local controllable through ha
Could be worse
They are at least local control (uses JSON/HTTP comms)
the only thing I wish was twinkly had a desktop application for creating new effects
I loath using my phone
Their even more disgustingly expensive "pro" range I think does
Or at least web-based control
Also it has wired Ethernet, which I guess is nice?
For Business
The professional handshake sparkling lights
they smoke cigars in the evening
technically you could swap out the controller for something else. all the channels just plug into this green box
I probably wouldn't have bought it if that weren't the case
cause that would just suck to only get a few years out of a tree then the controller died and noway to replace or fix it lol
Do they do the location calibration through some fancy color patterns?
I think to remember that somewhere
tree mapping? you do it through the app
they did a good job on that part. pretty painless
It looks a bit like magic lol
Yes
yea
Anyone have pretty christmas lights automation? Thinking of making out front garden motion activated, includimg a speaker with xmas music
motion activated to what?
Light automation starts when someone is there? So its not running all the time?
weird someone's car horn was the same tone as that Darude song. like it didn't play the song but the tone was the same lol https://youtu.be/y6120QOlsfU?si=LrherYj2PyHQ2iZt

I asked google... it had some not very nice things to say
https://www.indiatimes.com/trending/social-relevance/google-responds-after-ai-chatbot-gemini-calls-student-a-burden-on-society-and-says-please-die-nonsensical-response-646050.html
Sorry... a "nonsensical response"
I just need something simple for home control and maybe music preferably something that doesn't look gimmicky
I don't believe there's any official statements yet, but in the last release party live stream it was talked about quite a bit.
so we don't want AI to be honest now? that sounds like a bigger mistake
pretty sure that was just a cookie cutter response to all Gen Z
Should I buy Wiser or Tado X?
Wiser sounds localish with hacs
Isn't tado x local too?
matter might or might not work, probably best be asked in a forum channel
If you want both matter/thread and zigbee, then yes.
Matter itself doesn't need a dongle. Just Matter over Thread does.
or you know, just get an ecobee
IDK what that is
you can ask (or google it) in #1284966353798697001
AI needs to learn more about Uber eats 🙄
Sounds pretty ominous. Needs a smell sensor
That seems like a...different sort of order. And pretty cheap for that
cheaper isn't always better...
Walking buddy? I think that means they carry you, right?
I want to install docker on a fresh W11 install. Is there any reason I should use docker desktop instead of running docker engine in a Linux VM on WSL? I’m installing Linux in a VM regardless

Hey guys, should I be concerned seeing failed logins from localhost to /media/uploads/.git/config?
Also if I SSH into it directly, I see \[\e]0;\u@\h:\w\a\]\W $ as the prompt? seems fine when using the ssh plugin though.
This is no support channel.
#1284965172053807145 can help with the SSH issue and #1284966540617449515 might be able to help with the logins.
is there a zwave module dimmer? I had to put a zwave wall switch in attic for a lamp and rather have a module
like shelly 2pm
they have wifi version but not zwave
#1284966353798697001 can help there - tell them the country
Is there a way to run the codeproject.ai on home assistant with plugin support?
No idea if thats a addon or integration.....IF it already exists...
So philosophical question, what's worse having the same questions asked 4 times a day or having to redirect questions to appropriate area, I'm guessing the former, but both kind of seem to suck
Hey there.
Hello
Not sure if I'm posting in the right area. I'm hoping someone can point me to a definitive guide on home automation that I can use to scour for Black Friday deals. I want to take advantage of the timing right now.
I have a Zigbee hub and a few light bulbs. Looking for lots more lighting, then temp sensors and who knows what else. Thanks for any direction you might have.
The big thing I think they were trying to solve for is questions getting lost in the flood of other chat
to me that would be #1284966353798697001 with a zigbee tag
I'm really uncomfortable on Discord - I see a huge amount of info here.
@grizzled gull Thank you for that!
#find-support can usually help as well.
I'm not questioning the reason at all, I get it and its grown on me, I was just curious about trading one thing for another
Moderation and answering questions have become a lot easier with the new style.
Probably just some automatic vulnerability scans by 2b2t users.
Plus its nice just have a chat channel with fellow enthusiast that isn't scrolling super fast
oh he left
Neo, I think #1284966617670881350 is a better option sorry, didn't take a chance to review them, much more conversation about zigbee in that channel
Hey again. Sorry, but I'm not too familiar with Discord. I didn't see a specific Zigbee tag in hardware - did I miss it? Sorr for the question.
Ahh, just saw this. I'll check that out.
@tame plume also I'd like to point out the sticky at the top of the #1284966353798697001 for holiday deals
Excellent - thank you!

Gr8 fun
I'm so happy my career path diverged from technology and to healthcare, still deal with technology but I have people for it 😛
i want to kiss whoever did the electrical work in my new house
all of the lighting is on its own breaker, so i can install my smart switches without affecting anything else in the house
I build digital hospitals too, those are a fucking nightmare
Thankfully I'm so much further out then that, I act a liason between our EHR analysts and my department more then anything, I know enough to know what's not working, but don't really care about the nuts and bolts most of the time
I identify what part of the EHR isnt' working and sometimes causes but not deep into the weeds if that makes sense
On a side note, going from HAOS to Core + Dockers has actually been kind a fun in a wierd way
Yeah, we started doing digital hospitals in 2007, with full wifi coverage, bedside workstations with access to medical charts and automatic robots doing meanial tasks , And robots making pharmaceuticals , holy banana batman hospitals are unforgiving when stuff breaks
Going from haos to anything would be rewarding yes
Why the hate for HAOS, it worked great for me, it only broke on me because I did something stupid(forgot to impliment incremental backups and my VM image went to crap)
Soooo how far BLE goes. I got some switchbot curtain 3 and a hub, but I am thinking if it's possible to add it without needing the hub
O yes. the roof of my appartment compex replacement will be 100000 euro cheaper
Something like that 🙂
Hopefully, I mean hopefully, not like your esp32 lunchboxes
well that was weird, just had a google home mini factory reset itself
the most powerfull character in the universe dieing. Fake news
I'm old-school, and enjoy not being locked in to versions someone else decide for me
I can understand that
Oh Happy days, getting automations reset up, I thought the hardware portion would be the hard part, instead its the tediousness of automations lol. Who would have thought something as simple as Hey google turn the ceiling fan on high would be missed so much
HEllo

That post above gives me a headache, well so does the shaking.... turnip?
How do I get template sensors to reload the macros that they are using? I'm updating a macro and I can get the changes in the developer template but if I look at the entity it shows 'unknown' until I restart HA
YES. my Home assistant has loads of new mobile on the bike automations and sms handels. features in progress. For example some one sends me a whatsapp and im on the bike and i can call back the sender with one voice command.
My new wyoming satellite is complete™️
@sturdy sphinx cewl. Im waiting for some local guy with a 3d printer for my hardware to add voice control to my chill in the park speaker
I couldnt live without my 3d printer
I'm not familiar with this new format. Is my post blocked or awaiting moderation? It shows up in the lists of posts as greyed out, and there is no response after 5 hours.
Greyed out just means that you have already read it
has anyone setup source and zone switching on HA with toggle states and remembering what zones are active in each source when a source is pressed?
the watttime integration has been broken for a few weeks
bachya is its maintainer and could probably quickly update it to use a more recent version of his own library but has been on break for a while
what happens next? is there a place for me to flag this? (please ping on reply)
oh happy dance, finally my transition from HAOS to Core/dockers is complete, getting bluetooth working was surprisingly the biggest challange because of my host OS :/
i'm glad. was breaking my heart knowing you only had bar tenders to gab with out there... even if you do have to pay for it. lol
Looks cool! Deets? Did you post in show and tell yet?
Aww! Don't you think it's easier to hangout with people on "paper per view" ? 🤣
No, it's not original. I just followed along with this: https://www.printables.com/model/867901-home-assistant-voice-assistant-wyoming-satelite
my only originality is a small python script that runs with the wyoming service that plays a chime when it gets triggered, as this conference phone has no addressable LEDs to indicate what's happening
am i missing something or is the state of carbon intensity tracking terrible
electricitymaps doesn't sync exchange data and isn't fixable since it's closed source
watttime is broken and abandoned
i don't think there are other options
why would you even bother tracking that
its interesting to see how much carbon you're emitting and i could in theory shift energy use to decrease pollution
try #the-workshop this isn’t a support channel.
insane wind outside right now
wish we could send it your way @tidal bronze it might clear some of the smog and male the air more breathable there lol
-4c here currently, hoping for snow
25F is bikini weather tho
the decision to move the startup popup dialog box from the left of the main pain to the center in 11.x is weirding me out. us old people don't like drastic changes like that.. so sayin..
Anyone else having a problem updating simpleicons from v2.2.2 to v2.3.0?
We had -7C overnight. 38.6C heating temp (to radiators).
Insulating your house does work!
Getting loft insulated 30cm more in the next 2 weeks too. Should be able to use the left over heat from summer to heat my house for the whole winter soon
ZBMINIs are sweet btw, this is all
I wish I had deeper mounting boxes though, was a tight fit to get it in
do you jar it?
I have no idea what that is 😦
do you put the left over heat from summer into jars and then release in winter?
like canning
no that is just you and your farts probably
anyone run HA on a pi5
probably a lot of sad people yes
don't mind him. his country still runs off steam engines
Make sure to leave your windows open to get some fresh air through.
but wet racoon smells delish
it seems to have a decent processor quad core 2.4ghz . better than the green / yellow boxes?
anything would be better than a green \ yellow, so that is an unfair comparison
mouldy potato would be a viable upgrade
Do yourself a favour and skip the Pi. Use an NUC if you're after a low TDP device that can actually run smoothly. At least you can shove in a real SSD (preferably m.2) instead of relying on SD cards.
lots of great chinese minipcs too
Even with UK energy prices, my NUC barely registers on my usage. And it's way better than a Pi for a similar price.
since NUCs are a thing of the past
do you need the storage space for HA?
Well, whatever they're called now 😂
It's not about the space. It's about the constant read/write operations and burning out SD cards constantly. You'll see that's a theme here when people complain about HA falling over on their Pi.
all containers containing my smart home probably totals 12GB in all
i see 🤔 have to read up about it
any N100 or newer miniPC is cheaper \ better than a pi
a pi is great for a mobile home, or for a one off demo
other than that, it is a horrible choice
I bought a Pi years back. I don't regret it, since it's a fun little toy to tinker with. But since it's not much more to get a mini PC, just do that 😄
pis are more expensive than minipcs these days
Mine still sees use. It's sitting in the middle of my house running monitor. I could probably decommission it and just run that on my NUC.
Or an ESP32
But it's a 3(?) that I got for peanuts many years ago. Not worth buying a new one.
Yeah, that's how I'd do it if I didn't have the Pi laying around already. But I cba with buying/making enclosures for all my ESP stuff.
Should be moving house soon, so maybe there's a workshop and 3D printer in my future...
I need to get mine back running, just moved houses
gonna print some cases for my ESP32-S3 touch displays
great fun for the kids
I'm still at the 'keep everything away from the kid' stage 😂
Been a while since I've made anything new... what's different about the S3? I only have regular ESP32 and ESP8266 lying around.
I've included my daughters since they were around 3 months, I was wiring up the house while they were on the floor playing around, and programming stuff while they were sleeping on top of me
my eldest was 14 months old when she said "daddy can you print me a rainbow unicorn"

This is the one I'm playing around with
bought some rechargable batteries for it too
so it can be plugged in, and also carried around
Sweet. That looks pretty slick. How do you go about modifying the UI?
it is all openhasp
I found new software for your HA Swtchplate. #openHASP This firmware uses json strings to make awesome screens on your HASPone device.
Let's see if I can make this work!
Update... See part 2 in the next stream of Christmas here: https://youtu.be/_14Jaj4FjM4
Website for the software and links to get the hardware:
https://www.openhasp.com/0.6...
You using these as room controllers?
That was the intention
and scrollable screen so you can change room
I need to sit down and learn this one day
Pendragon is highly underrated guitarmasturbation
that songs flow is really fooked up
You mean "progressive rock"
is that what it's called
I would only consider maybe 20% of that song being "rock" lol
constant tempo and rythm changes is a characteristic of progressive music yes
I do mostly neo progressive and progressive metal these days, but I've dabbled a bit in progressive jazz metal in the past
that's a ride of its own
fun fact, I was supposed to play a concert at the Ventian in Las Vegas, but it got rescheduled to Fira in Barcelona 😦
yea i'll go back to the real hair bands. you can keep that all to yourself lol
Or would that make it a sad fact 🤔
Yes!
We have mechanical ventillation with heat recovery!
Next you'll be telling us that LPs have higher audio quality than digital recordings
To be fair, they probably should be higher quality!
CD quality is still higher quality than them
Even if they are analog, they just can't compete
I haven't bought a CD since 2007
I have bought a few LPs since
Mostly because I enjoy the covers a lot and I do have a record player
LPs degrade slightly with every play too, right?
Practically yes
I have LPs from the 70s that have been played extensively that are still fine though
so it depends on usage and care I guess
I had Momentary Lapse Of Reason on repeat for almost a year in my room in the 90s, still plays fine
careful, you'll anger the QF with your snarky comments
😈
ATXs basement is large enoug to fit all the lps
I haven't bought physical media in a decade probably, I just do good lossless flac files
i suspect that the wear you get on an lp in a good record player will tend to mostly be gradual attenuation of high frequencies… so probably not all that noticeable (especially since people naturally lose hearing in higher frequencies as they get older)
Would be interesting to figure out the damage vs tolerances on this equipment
They absolutely did make them the cheapest way possible
they still make them
big pancake press
now they come in all kinds of interesting colors and designs
but still not as neat as the old silver and gold ones
is this "progressive" rock because it's ai created? https://youtu.be/uzVWKix--UA?si=YE2n-6uc9SDjyWYB

Do ears or vinyl wear our first? Sounds interesting!
Do they make them out of raccoon tails?
Is there a way to add a logbook card for an ESPHome device? Not an ESPHome entity, but the entire device like is shown when you look at the device summary?
that's an #1284966582375813201
I totally screwed up my Zigbee ZHA trying to change the radio, how can I get it working again?
Yea I posted there yesterday and there is no response. This new format is terrible
So I restart the entire home assistant and it seems to work but it never prompted me to Overwrite Radio IEEE Address which is concerning
It says I do not have permission to post to #find-support
Correct.
well threw the third reality zigbee bulbs in my outside lights...
then realized these things can't do custom effects like the magic home ones..
so now I gotta dive down the whole build your own bs
still daytime out, so not sure. they look just like the magic home ones but won't know about brightness till later
I have one exterior light on the side of my house that has no close zigbee routers to it. was shocked it paired up lol
almost as if the zigbee signal made a hard left around a concrete foundation to connect to the others on the outside
Was the visualization option removed from ZHA? I can not find it...
Where is the Zigbee channel here? I can not find it to post these questions
I posted yesterday in #1284966582375813201 because ZHA is an integration. And they just replied no no no this is not the right place!
for ZHA #1284966582375813201 is correct. for zigbee devices working with HA then #1284966617670881350
However it is more likely to find a Zigbee expert in #1284966617670881350 with the "Zigbee" tag.
grumble, I wish there was something between workstation stuff/smaller server stuff and gamer stuff, all I want is a new intel machine with quicksync 770 integrted graphics and a no frills mobo without lights and other crap
looks like some sort of exploding star
@real frigate is that enough routers between shit and the cordinator for ya? lol
Guess I'm doing stuff wrong because thats similar to what my zigbee mesh looks like lol
other then having a lot more end devices because I was cheap with bulbs before I knew better
Looks like a detailed map of middle earth👌
is it weird that I don't want to write an automation that fires off every 3 seconds to change the colors of 4 bulbs? lol
You could have the zigbee-fish like my network
I like how that image is so small that discord had to blow up instead of shrink it
more like a minnow
Add more… 🤣
if they pan out I plan to add a sensor to my mailbox now that it can reach lol
Mailbox?
did california switch to email only?
99% of my mail goes straight into the recycle bin when I take out the trash. I'm sure it's amusing watching me squint in the dark to try to figure out if something is important
Mostly jury duty, election ballots
Property tax statements, that's about it.
25% of the stuff i order online gets shoved in the mailbox
DMV business
Like the auto function on some thermostats?
Yep
been there, done that
Do tell
as in I wished that eons ago and gave up
I can't. Nest and Ecobee are simply useless to me
although now that I got my space heater under HA having seperate thermostats is required for me
I haven't dabbled much with that, I know my Centralite Pearl and Hi and Low setpoints so all I would need to impliment auto is change the heat vs cooling is a trigger on outside temp
or inside I guess
Generic works like a charm but conditional UI elements and multiple thermostats, just too much brew-ha-ha to deal with
I live in a climate though that I shut HVAC off for a few months each spring, and fall so I just manually change the settings, didn't turn heat on until Nov 1st, have had windows open since late August
I still need to work on weighted averages and fne tune average zone temp, to account bedroom fireplaces. Nothing is ever simple 😁
Minimum of 2 temp sensors per room/area.
aren't you running HA on like an i9 with like 64gb of ram and it still can't keep up with your temperature controlling? lol
I thought I was overkill with a 5700x unraid box
HA runs like butter. But accounting for every possible variable, i9 can't solve that. 🤣 yep my quest to completely automate things......
you are going to be the first person in history to install HA on a quantum computer
IBM is going to be like, you wanna run what on our machine?
I am happy with HA speed. Just battling Forced Air + Fireplace logic in certain rooms. Guests coming over is never fun. Lol
I just pictured your central air sucking in all the smoke into the room
Some fireplaces are in bedrooms anyway.
oh so I wish you would pop up on the news clips i watch. that would make my year
My sister always accuses me of trying to build a house sentient enough to kill us, I think I need to introduce her to you QF
Been years and I could never dial in guest scenarios to the T. Oh well, struggle continues.
i am accused of making the house "dementia friendly"
"the oven is still on"
"please ensure cup is in the coffee machine"
"the car has been left unlocked"
etc...
I saw something last night were a wife set a guys alarm clock to 5am with horrible music, his revenge was to have her toothbrush which is bluetooth enabled triggle a whole bunch of stuff 5 minutes after she was done, screaming from speakers, making the robo vac start, red lights flashing from the bulbs a whole bunch of stuff, it was hilarious
Most of my house systems are closed loop, so no notifications at all. My first goal was to eliminate 99% of notifications
"evil automations" a nice thread that one
Was that on here? I forget where I saw it, it was late
Yes that! lol
one of my evil ones i commented has blown up
Truthfully that’s the only way the remaining notifications are useful. Too many = noise.
Yep. Years ago I had TTS for everything. Lmao.
yeah you don't want to get to notification fatigue
The whole notification thing brings back memories of my first yahoo mail account where I signed up for everything because I wanted to get emails so I wouldn't miss things.....
I do get silent Telegram stuff like this. Just things to go back and check as a log. But no notifications with bells and stuff
i try to keep the notifications for things that require human interaction and also at predicted times to give infomation. dont want it spamming too much at random times
I kinda don't have anything like that. The only important thing used to be water leak, even that now goes silent, since shutoff valve is automated.
tts notifications are better for others in the house so i tend to keep it with that. but stuff thats exclusive to me generally just appears on my dashbaord unless its critical
I don't use a dashboard at all. 😆
this is my main landing page, you can see the (currently empty) notification section at the top. stuff appeears there when needed. still a work in progress but isnt everyones? 🙂
generally have that up somewhere on my screens to see status at a glance
I run those buttons on my moms ha. i actually like those
very clean
still too big for my dashboard tho
Looks clean!
ugh cycling through colors on bulbs is too resource intensive for HA imo
ew look at that gross cord coming off that
if i were your guest i would complain
I know.
those lenovo things are actually holding up great
nothing more perminent than a tempory setup right?
Love the switch frames
atx was talking about an esp/display kit earlier. those things are slick. don't care much for how hard it is to display what you want but once you got it setup it would be awesome
there is a zigbee version lol
i am thinking of building a better setup with a rpi and the new screen they just dropped. its a decent enough resolution for the task
I like the zigbee idea.. get that crap off wifi
then for those that like actual buttons
i mess with a load of random stuff and see what works. put it up and see if its actually used and if its not try something else
just do stuff and spark ideas approach seems to work for me
I spot a local deck
you do indeed
i wrote up making the setup here - https://github.com/MichaelMKKelly/LocalDeck-Light-Switch-Mount
ill probably get another one at some point but i think ill be waiting for the hardware revision
Does this use some kiosk mode?
I have yet to get one, but I've also made my own 9 key pads that work in the same way, have like 4 or 5 of them around the house
the statistics helper does that does it not?
Didn't manage to get that going on the m11
yes, kiosk mode and fully kiosk app
Interesting
Maybe it's something related to android 14 I've experienced
It either wouldnt turn off or wouldn't turn on the screen properly
i will admit to it not switching on/off perfectly all the time but it mostly works. but its supposed to be tempory until i put a better setup in place so it doesnt bother me that much. a rpi and a pressence sensor with zones is the eventual plan
I returned the tab and was disappointed ^^
But it's a cool device for how cheap it is
Even has a pen (and an LTE version exists)
i got that tablet super cheap on ebay. i wouldnt have bought a new one to expiment with. i tried to use an old one i had laying around but that went badly..... as in the battery exploded and set on fire whilst in my hands and i had to put it in an explosion containment bucket outside rapidly
Ouch
why isn't kiosk mode baked in HA already? rather it be account setting or dashboard
I don't get how that hasn't made it in core yet lol
Mostly because it needs extensive device permissions to work
so what
tbh i am happy it happened in my hands in the middle of the day whilst i was awake and alert. and not in the middle of the night whilst it was in a box under the bed
i dont think that exists. although i would love it if it did. you can maybe query the database directly but i am not sure
Probably digital signage systems can do all that without magic
Just they are a bit pricy
Even tho some are Poe powered even
Reminder: this is not a support channel. Just chill.
We do chill
Ask in #1284966664357810196
🥶
Oh no ender is freezing
oh shit ukraine jumped on that US missle clearence
man I hope we don't start seeing nukes flying
would be cool if dashboard views could be accessed individually with a specific link. would still have to log in but that would make it easier. just use the view link on kiosk software
? they can
Bold assumption that they would be able to fly :^)
i mean that shows only them and no menus
daputin already stated they would consider it
hope you all have your radiation suits
right, thats what I was refering to with kiosk baked in
But this is politics which aren't great for chilling
is war politics?
pretty much yes
yeah, just a ?kiosk=on or something would be nice but i guess its low on the priority list
-# aqara just released a water valve controller, that's fun.
well one of intergrations had you add =kiosk at the end of a url i think
ooo thats cool. i am waiting for this to maybe ship - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/aquaro-water-monitor/aquaro-smart-water-monitor-get-leak-alerts/description
Subscription spotted
aquaro is supposed to have a directly connecting HA integration. but if it turns out to be cloud then i guess its the same as them not shipping. its a kickstarter so its a diceroll anyway
That naming is unfortunately close to Aqara (which I keep mistyping as Aquara)
Nice, ultrasonic. Let us know how it performs.
will do. they said hoping to ship in about a month as of 8 days ago when they look addresses. i am hopeful to see it before cristmas
Yes all digital fotos i have are now in nextcloud
Possible to put a timer in this switch? Do Shelly make anything? I'm trying to have the ability to delay start / schedule start my dishwasher so I can run it overnight.
It won't work unfortunately as it's an integrated dishwasher. The buttons are on the top and are hidden once the door is closed
So crap it doesn't have delay inbuilt.. it's a Bosch one and not even that old
Think I found something: https://click-smart.com/products/smart-fcu
my bosch like that has a botton you press a few times to delay the time to start, not sure how the dishwaster would start because when its closed teh buttons are disabled, I don't think it starts when you restart power, (although I vaguely remember something about what happens if it loses power)
now you say. my sash washer also has a delay
Unfortunately this isn't the case for me. Just went through the manual 😕
What part? the delay button? or what happens after power is cut?
i put a shelly pm behind my a fused spur for power monitoring of a washing machine. you could definetly do the same with a relay if you wanted to. however theres a motor in a dishwasher so the relay might get upset with he inductive load (this is why i went for a monitor only). also does the dishwasher come on straight away when power is applied?
found a old screenshot of my windows XP laptop
Feeling reallllly frustrated right now. My neighbor came by earlier and rang my doorbell - keep in mind, it NEVER gets rang, maybe twice a year.
It crumbled under the weight of his puny finger. When I answered he handed me bits and pieces that fell off, and told me what happened. And when I touched it to just get a glance, it crumbled further. Like trash.
This damn thing isn't even 4 years old - an Amcrest AD110.
I'm pretty pissed off, but I guess I'm in the market for a new doorbell.
Does anyone have any suggestion for a doorbell that operates on the standard doorbell power terminals and allows local video streaming? I have absolutely no problems with the Amcrest other than this crumbling issue, but I'm so pissed I want to know what other options people have had success with.
The AD110 has an app that lets me do 2-way talking, but I rarely use that and have external IP/DNS blocked from the device, but togglable by a button on my phone (ssh command to my firewall, nerdy stuff). I'm more interested in local-only access for motion detection and seeing what's at the door before I approach it.
Anyway. Frustrated guy here just needs some guidance and talked off the ledge 😅
sounds like a new company on my "avoid if possible" list. i imagine the plastic perished to the UV of the sun, i say this with no experience at all but I can say that if i was buying one now that i would look at the reolink stuff they have various options
I think eufy and ubiquiti too— but #1284966353798697001 will likely be able to offer specific ideas/recs.
wtf.. this thing exposed to direct sunlight all day? mine never did that
Considering I have southern hemisphere ozone hole "oops, all ultraviolet", surprised my Ubiquiti camera has been a-ok out in the elements
3.5 years, aside from that it's pulling Ubiquiti's classic trick of burning out the LEDs (IR lights are probably half as bright as they were when it was new), zero issues
Not really, and even if it were I'd expect it to stand up to that
Reolink poe, but the non poe version! Give it a look
It has 2 terminals on the back of the poe one, as well as the network port, I assume the wifi one dors too
When did it become hard to use a yubikey?
Before I would just touch it to log in to some websites.
Now I have to first tell my password manager that I want to use a hardware key instead.
Then I have to tell windows I want to use a hardware key instead of Windows Hello (whatever that is).
And then I can touch it to log in.
@clear ferry is this how your servers get so much ram?
memmaker.exe
What if you enable zram
I think that will make it faster due to the remote swap bandwidth
Man, I kinda wish there was an OpenScale integration. Or any kind of scale integration. Not having to involve my phone in the process would make me more likely to bother.
Create a feature request on the forum
Huh, looks like there's a hacs integration for one brand... Now I just have to decide if it's worth buying a new scale just for that laziness.
Or that.
Morning! Looking to build my own Home Assistant setup. But I do have a rather unique way I want it to send me errors, that will probably involve creating my own HA integration & Android+WearOS app
Warnings or errors?
lmao this a guy from the HA dev community
errors. I'll also create something to send me warnings, and something else to send regular updates
But basically my plan is, if there's an error, I'm gonna get the Home Assistant to call me
have you checked spook?
just looked at it and not what I'm after, but could still be useful
what are you after
Looking for a way that when something errors out (as in the integration completely falls over) my phone gets called over the internet by HA
But part of the reason I'm probably gonna still need to build my own stuff is because I want the call screen (at my end) to have a very specific theme to it. So I'll probably need to generate my own call out in the Home Assistant to ensure it goes to the right caller on my phone
none of that really sounds custom
system log integration with normal andriod/ios notifications (actionable)
I specifically want it to call me though (over the internet, rather than via the phone networks)
Not just push a notification. Not to mention I want to use a very specific call screen on my phone for it that I'd need to custom make.
call you like voip?
Yes
But with a very specific custom designed incoming call screen on my phone & watch (since the call screen I'm drawing inspiration from Android Honeycomb)
But why errors. Like tts of a error message makes sense.
There's some custom VOIP "notification" options - integrations and add-ons - out there
Yes, it would be a TTS related to the error message
Like "This is your Home Assistant calling. [Integration name] has stopped working due to [Error reason]"
https://github.com/arnonym/ha-plugins would be my bet.
So it sounds like HA already has everything there so will just need to create my own custom call screen specific for the HA calls. And feed it back into the HA system. I'll keep the Pixel call screen for cellular calls though (that Google Assistant call screening).
@rich sphinx Best to go to integrations setup a topic. I can help. I do a lot with voip. but i dont have calls like that
Roger, will go to Integrations once I've acquired the HA and started the setup of it
Does the HA yellow have a WiFi module in it for the PCM4 to use, or do I need a WiFi module for the Pi4?
That's assuming I'll have a spare ethernet port always available
I tried to move from a 4 port switch to an 8 port and that 8 port one is breaking the Hue Bridge
I guess most wifi will work.
Home assistant os uses linux and linux works with most wifi drivers if not to new or unique.
not sure how a switch could break hue bridge
newton knows a way
Well when I plug it into the 8 port, it refuses to connect to the internet, but works fine in the 4 port. Other devices connected to the 8 port connect to the internet fine
can you see the mac addess on the local network?
I'll have to check when I try to hook up the 8 port next
I kinda need to get the 8 port working anyway... got other devices I need to add 😑 (e.g. PiHole, secondary PC)
is it a managed switch or unmanaged
I believe it's unmanaged
are you managing vlans?
if yes, that's why it won't work
unmanaged switches are dumb, and they remove all special things you do on your network
how do you know what "special" things i do on my network? hmm?
my multi hostapd guest network is kinda special.
The 8 port switch is the model TL-SG108E(UN) 6.0
Oh... it appears this one does support VLAN... I wonder if that's what's happening
And that's the 4-port
sure hope this OTA update for these third reality bulbs fixes the weirdness with operating them through HA
Random rant. I absolutely love Home Assistant.........BEST THING I ever geeked out on. End Rant
W opinion
John Deere is costing American farmers $4.2 billion a year by restricting them from fixing their own tractors. Apple, Amazon and major automakers use the same strategies on everything you own. It's bad for consumers and local mechanics, but excellent for corporate profits.
More Perfect Union’s mission is to build power for working people....
WTH, Third Reality has bulbs now?, are they better then singled at least?
And they are repeaters...........
Funny, I often get this urge to just shout that out somewhere... glad to see I am not the only one!
Just so well handled
@stable wolf - I am getting tired of your dashboards taunting me with how good they look, while I have no sense of style at all. Any chance someday you would be putting out a simple style guide on how to think through making stuff decent looking? Awesome work you guys are doing. Definitely in my top 5 software packages!
Yes!!! Thats whyvibasked in hardware post!! So im looking forward to it
They are on Amazon already
Amd you want to know what's odd? I dont even see release date to see how long they been out
I'm going to replace some of singled ones with those, some i won't only because they are special cases(edison bulbs)
identified 8 bulbs I can replace...... may just order 3 for now to see how they work, hesitent to replace lights on switches because my mother in law....
I love discord, but loath it in a way, it makes me spend more money 😛
omg they have tilt sensors now too!
The are really putting out a lot of new things, soil moisture sensors that's awesome for drip irrigation
ooooh, I gotta look at that
THIRDREALITY Smart Soil Moisture Sensor, allows remote monitoring and data viewing, making plant care more convenient than traditional methods.Featuring a reliable capacitive probe, it delivers accurate, instant moisture readings, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. Build a smart irrigation...
I'm currently using ecowitt sensors which are fine, but having other options is awesome, which are about the same priced, and for my distant gardens they are a better choice due to being lower frequency then zigbee, but for stuff around the house these look awesome
never tried singled only other zigbee bulb i've tried was innr which also works well. yes they are routing devices
singled are end devices only, which for some situations is better
not sure what situations lol
Bulbs on light switches that get turned off and on a lot
someone else apparently asked about them in this post and i commented https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1307467236541468735
yea but if you don't need it to be a routing device then that shouldn't impact anything anyways
True, given the price point though I see no reason to buy singled though
We are trying to make the default dashboard, especially Sections view, to let any users create aesthetically pleasing results easily 😄 so you don't need style guide or sense of style
hah, thanks! You guys are awesome
no sense of style..
I feel seen and embraced
mowhawks aren't that bad
Lol mow hawk, I'm imagining a guy on a John Deere lawn mower with a mohawk
Are there any brick and mortar stores in Northern England where one can buy a home assistant yellow and a raspberry pi pcm4?
Unless they are listed as official resellers, maybe but unlikely
You probably should check the web on stores in your area and check with them if they have such inventory
There's the official raspberry pi shop in Cambridge.
But that doesn't stock HA yellow.
That's South England
I'm quite a bit up north in West Yorkshire. Would prefer a brick and mortar store I can go into
it's that like driving from San Diego to LA? 🙂
It's a little longer of a drive than from Houston to Houston
Which is my favorite drive time reference
I’ve found some tablets originally used in office environments to show occupancy of meeting rooms. They run android 7.1. Would it be possible to run like fully kiosk on them? They’re called Meetio - Room MR-IE10
if you can access the underlying android os then I don't see why not
but you should ask in #the-workshop
Oh, thanks!
ok are you dev's occasionally moving and changing the "create a backup before you update" button to try and trick people into leaving it checked prior to updating something like an addon? I'm feeling very suspicious here
you may be onto something there
There honestly aren't many in the UK. But the places linked on the HA yellow site are a good place to order from. And delivery is fast in my experience.
(The Pi Hut is such a dangerous website for me, I always order more than I'd planned 😂😂)
Yeah I'm specifically wanting a brick and mortar store
As I said, there aren't many. The only UK stockist of the yellow is online only.
And raspberry pis are not exactly available in Poundland which is all basically all that's left on the high street.
I think RS have stores in Newcastle and Manchester. They seem to sell RPIs.
Our network is made up of 17 RS Local branches, located across the UK and Ireland.
now I know the UK equivalent to Dollar General and The Dollar Store 🙂
We shop in charity shops mostly. 🤣
Is this the one you're meaning? https://www.amazon.com/REOLINK-Doorbell-Detection-Storage-Assistant/dp/B0B7S3JSG7
2023 New Release - Reolink Video Doorbell Camera (WiFi Version) This wired WiFi doorbell camera has 5MP resolution.Together with 180° diagonal, it will be much easier to catch more surrounding details. Yes!
I have the poe one, it is great
Integrates well with home assistant too
It reads really great on paper... Local storage natively is really nice, although I just use motioneye and webhooks.. nothing fancy yet
I have teh same camera, I've been putting off doing the firmware update because I swore I saw something that made it break in frigate
I upgraded mine about a year ago, as they added iframe adjustment and a couple other things
this is a newer update, I just disabled the firmware update reminder because it works just fine the way it is
I'm curious, the chime box thing, is that necessary? Or can i still depend on my existing wired chime box?
I use blue iris and the fps and iframe intervals should be the same for the main and substreams
i wanna use blue iris but i'm a linux-only house 😄
No idea, I didn't have an existing box 🙂
although i did recently find out how to easily manage a windows vm via docker without any kvm software needed myself... so i might give that a try
There is a blue iris docker I've seen floating around, not sure it works
ooh?
Blueiris in a docker using wine! Contribute to jshridha/docker-blueiris development by creating an account on GitHub.
not sure why i didn't even look for that
that's exactly how i was going to do it, too 😆
well not fluxbox, but yeah
To be fair, you would probably want iGPU with quicksync with any beefy setup
hmm yeah i don't have a beefy setup fortunately
And that may put docker out of the equation
Eh? You can pass through GPUs to dockers, doing it now with Emby and a 1050ti
oh so like the nvidia gpu container wouldn't suffice? this is a Dell SFF pc, no gpu just integrated jun
but on my desktop yeah i use my gpu with docker for some stable diffusion stuffs
You can use cuda or quicksync
if you wait a little longer they will be releasing a 4k wifi version
Does Blueiris use coral?
It can
hmmmmmm... do you know how long is a little longer? this thing has fallen off the mounting bracket and is so brittle, and exposed to the elements
i can't kill the breaker switch because my HVAC is on the same circuit
Blue iris (can use deepstack also) uses something called code project for ai, that has a coral plugin
supposed to be this year
You won't need to turn it off, if the weather does it for you 🤣
hahah well as long as it doesn't burn down my house mother nature can have it
Question: Has anyone made their own HVAC controller with HA, got rid of their commercial thermostat and controlled the systems with direct relays? Any handy links or channels I should be in? Or is this just total folly and avoid avoid avoid?
I'm thinking about how to go 100% HA... no sleep til Brooklyn. My HVAC installer wants to swap thermostats and I'm starting to think that they all have issues, and there aren't many that can handle several accessories like fresh air vents and multi-level heat pumps
I have seen thermostat manifolds controlled via HA on reddit
So I wouldn't be surprised tbh
heh my first initial instict is "how hard could it be? an esp32 and a few relays" but i know nothing about that
I use a dumb thermostat with no scheduling but zigbee that controls our hvac, kind of a middle ground, nice to have a fall back though
but i have a zwave thermostat that works great, haven't touched it since the house was built
I have an ecobee, but control all of the scheduling/setpoints in HA.
I have weather compensation on flow temp and then normal thermostatic valves on the radiators now, difficult to trim the heat with all the extra insulation I keep adding 🤣
My intuition is to go with ecobee but it doesn't have a lot of relay outputs for different HVAC accessories... so it's a difficult choice
I'd be hesitant to go 100% software driven on a thermostat, because even dumb zigbee/zwave thermostats have emergency heat setting for fall back incase something happens to HA
That's what I've always thought in the past as well. Also, moving out is a lot easier...
My end goal is to have what I have now, but monitored with an esp32
This is exactly why I don't have a HA based setup
I always had a mind to sniff compressor comms to the central air system as well
Can you imagine if it goes down and your pipes freeze or something?
My ventillation setup uses modbus, I need to get it into HA
yeah I guess it's not just about the thermostat when dealing with HA, some other integration could take the system down, then what?
could you imagine your pipes being exposed enough to be able to freeze
Texas enters the chat
it's an issue in a place like Colorado US
time to wrap them pipes
@forest edge how many BTU is a raccoon licking a pipe from the tongue heat?
It can get cold enough to still freeze your pipes-- even if wrapped (and in your house)
(In Colorado US)
in a barn maybe
lol ok Sonoma
Minnesota here.... issue with Texas ius they put all their pipes in the outside walls, we have 95% of of plumbing on inside walls or insde the building envelope
I have been looking at air water monoblocks, we get down to -25C here. But you send water to and from it, no antifreeze it seems. I don't see how it is good if power went out
The irony of my question is whether it's easier to design a relay system on ESP32 or whatnot than find the right thermostat. Intersecting "what works with HA" and "what has enough driver terminals" is pretty challenging
People that do that sort of "not off the shelf solution" seem to get custom pcbs made too
Brian what are you tring to do?
my trees snapped in the ice storm a few years back... that pissed me right off...
I would say it is definately possible, but it isn't going to be easy
you don't realize how expensive trees are until you replace them
facts
But they grow out of the ground! Trees are free!
You could always run multiple thermostats for different zones but control them with HA with the thermostats still having their emergency settings
replace?
Solve for: "whether it's easier to design a relay system on ESP32 or whatnot than find the right thermostat. Intersecting "what works with HA" and "what has enough driver terminals" is pretty challenging"
stupid HOA....
HOA.... ewwwww, they are putting in a new neighborhood accross the street from me with one, I'm going to wash my Jeeps by hand and work on them in the driveway just to rub it in
yeah... sad thing is once covid hit, they basically did nothing and a billion people moved into the area and now there's like 10-15 people living in every house, and car chases end up in our area... you know, right around the $700k-1MM homes... Austin has turned to shit, very quick and i'm ready to gtfo
Would you really want a relay btw? Wouldn't you want a granular "screw motor" to adjust valves?
it's not really better anywhere else lol
yeah well that's why i'm looking at property where i need to drive to see my neighbor 😆
Well it's an air-source heat pump and dual-fuel (natural gas) gas system, so it's all controlled with 24v binary signaling.
if you already have $$ then don't delay.. if you don't then don't expect anything to get any cheaper lol
so the dual fuel is the backup for when it gets really cold?
right
so why not setup 2 dumb thermostats and set conditions on outside temp
So you want to control what is heating, rather than controlling the actual distribution within the house?
surprised the powers that be haven't ran you all off to the the-workshop yet lol
Eventually both, but for now just avoid investing more time with weaksauce integrations for thermostat manufacturers that don't play ball
sorry!
Popcorn consumption by the mods must be high
Geez guys, this would really be better in the #the-workshop
Brian no integrations at all needed
I am just enjoying not talking about raccoons for once tbh
Ah! Is that where I am supposed to be? That's a tip I was looking for as well (TY)
doctor said your illness was terminal?
-# are you an imposter
Start a post and I can share my thermostat and my automations if you want, no need to use an integration other then zigbee
I think you're making this more difficult then it has to be 🙂
I think he passed away. was sad
Ok maybe I get it now: Don't worry about which thermostat, just get one with enough driver terminals and has Zigbee, the rest is software
dunno if the wife took over hot dog duty or not
No! Still making youtube vidoes!
oh really?
James Blackwell iirc
I thought they posted a video about him being super sick and on the way out
wonder if the racoon mass body heat healed him
Blackwood
Thanks all!!
the guy with the guns?
I think they are the cause of global warming tbh
or just get 2, because they are just glorified relays
Yeah, he was sick for a while, but still making videos 🙂
can I post ebay links? nothing fun unfortunately, or do I need to post that in the workshop?
cow and racoon farts huh?
I would guess so 🤣
the amount of missing pet posts that pop up this time of year is always so sad
Yeah, these I know are all strays
Old House got lots of dumped dogs though in the area
I would end up taking them in
We ended up with 6 cats 🤣
and you didnt send me one?
@tidal bronze ever landed at this airport? https://youtu.be/M2cN49Cfg9Y?si=XeV4l9TGB6dl6kaI

when the automated thing announced the 500ft above those homes I knew it was going to get interesting then 200ft above that road with the car.. was like yea.. f that!
Anyone using a WiFi smart lock that is HA friendly?
Thanks. Will look at that when I get home.
Not yet 🙂
Some of them are not fit for indoor house cats, but most of them are good cats
Some are dicks, food guard, and beat up the other cats
what do people think about a echo show 15 as dashboard
op
They have a store in Leeds too! So even better
trying to get my vacuum integrated into HA https://youtube.com/shorts/0e8iWc3kmoE?si=PgoBlPo85ML57jR0
@lone dagger you safe?
i dont know who sarah is but i suspect there has been a drop in spouse approval factor requirement somewhere...
LOL
Anyone ever make an automation and thing they have it perfect, then they let it run for a day and realize they screwed it up and then have ah ha momment think to yourself "I'm an idiot"
isnt that most automations?
maybe....
everything is trial and error
I sent this to my colleague, because youtube was being weird and decided I needed to watch it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_C3D0rcFXrY
He described it as "accurate depiction of most people's home automation"
(For licensing or usage, contact licensing@viralhog.com)
The Automato/Catsup Crapper/Ketchup Robot is challenged to dispense ketchup on 6 items in and obstacle course in under 30 seconds.
it sort of does what its supposed to do but needs fine tuning... so yeah sounds about right
So I nuked my HAOS VM and went with a docker setup, my previous setup I used Node Red for most of my automations though using HA entities, this time around on a fresh config, I've decided to just use strictly HA automations and honestly for everything so far I've wanted to do its worked ok
dont think i have ever heard of anyone going from haos to docker. haos is so much more flexible. I havent actually ever used nodered. i should probably try it at some point but i havent had much issue making stuff with HA automations so it seems a little redundant
Eh, I figure HAOS is just a supervisor anyhow, if I'm already running a machine with dockers, I'll take out the middle man
hey, if it works for you then thats what matters
I mean yes I know it does more then just a supervisor, but in the grand scheme of things it what it boiled down to in my head, plus it let me tinker more
i am running it on a ha yellow currently. if i was to run it on other hardware i would run haos on one of my proxmox servers
might get a n100 minipc at some point for it and a couple of other things though. too many ideas not enough implementation
NR? Did you come across stuff that HA couldn't handle?
Didn't even try, wanted to learn something new and it was a good oportunity
Ah
Kinda along the same reason I went with docker setup vs haos
I enjoy the putzing around
Nothing wrong with that, as long as production is untouched 😀
My wife really loves it when I take down the entire house entertainment system, yes I play with my production box lol
Wowza! Life will stop here. Lol
nothing critical though, I will say waiting until I got a new POE zigbee cordinator and not having lights throughout most of the house was interesting for 2 days
i mess around alot on prod to be fair but i do have a "canary install" on proxmox i use if i end up needing to restart alot or need to repro a problem on a setup with less stuff etc...
Will not fly at my place. Even I don't know what switch is for what lol.
