Lmao
I'm watching AI-Fest West, or I think that's what it is.
https://github.blog/news-insights/octoverse/octoverse-2024/
oh bah, I thought that was something very different
So far everything is co-piliot...
@real frigate were you the one that switched from GA to Gemini and back?
No he was the one that thought Transformers One was a good movie, but reality is it sucked.
I like how they edited hemsworth's voice at the end to make it sound more like the real optimus prime as if what we watched was optimus pre puberty

A proposed class-action lawsuit claims Subway is shorting its customers, saying the chain uses ads that show sandwiches loaded with more meat than it actually delivers. NBC’s Christine Romans reports for TODAY.

Me who never sees ads: "?????"
I haven't seen a subway ad since $5 footlongs were a thing.
Ugh I hadn't seen ads in so long but now desktop discord plays them in embedded player
Subway is still around?
There is only one good transformers movie.
The one optimus prime dies.
of course, where else did you think the other restaurants around LA get their food?
Humidity too high? Looks like it's too muggy and you are confusing Louisiana with LA lol
you can see through high humidity, not smog lol
probably why you can't handle humidity, water in the air is lighter than the pollution that blankets your city lol
...huh? I've never seen this.
This BT proxy thing is making me unhappy.
time to box up everything associated with it and ship to to me I suppose
Lol. This lock shit. BT proxy randomly stops responding until a restart.
Why did I even bother with BT. Oh well
I never liked bluetooth stuff. it never works flawlessly
I use BT headphones to listen to the TV at night while the woman is asleep and while it works fine most of the time, it just picks random times to be stupid.. like I have to repair to fix stupid
and you can't ever be 100% sure which side is at fault.. the headphones or the tv
I have the same issue. I agree my Shield/TV is too far from the bed but still, channel sync issues, complete audio loss, what a nightmare
I call the Spec BS
Nah, I've been on Gemini but now I'm almost completely local with ollama and gemma2/phi35 models.
Is there any difference or preference between calling an automation based on a button trigger or calling a script from a button? Seems like both would accomplish the samet hing.
you can't call an automation
Same thing, mostly. Might be a few milliseconds delay between the trigger on the automation versus the script from a tap_action. But, if you notice it, I'd be impressed.
The button would be the trigger I guess
you should always write a script and call it rather than trying to trigger an automation
buttons aren't triggers
I call my automations all the time... usually bad names when they don't work as I intend them to.
So either way works, I guess technically "calling" a script from a button press is the recommended approach it sounds like?
Yup
Anyone ever seen the companion app just start lagging to hell, dropping formatting, etc? Rebooting HA just in case, but I doubt the root cause is there.
Did a complete uninstall and reinstall and it's still borked.
sounds like cache
A while back I had a buggy 3rd party frontend module that was leaking memory like a bastard
(it was doing it on desktop too, so if loading HA in a browser eventually crashes the tab, you too might have a memory leak)
The web interface is intact. It's just the HA app that's broken. Can't auto-populate any fields, most text boxes are broken, deleting an element in an automation or script freezes the entire interface, etc...
Just got home, so I'll start trying to figure it out again.
Bad update to "Android System Webwiew" perhaps? That's definitely happened once or twice in recent memory
There were two releases yesterday and today; 130.0.6723.58 and 130.0.6723.60.
Working fine for me on .58 so if you have .60 perhaps something to look into?
seems like a great topic for #1284965926336335993
Yeah, was about to open a topic there. I was hoping I'd find a solution quickly. Apparently not in the cards though.
Uhhhh... I just tried pulling a logcat and it's magically fine again. Wtf.
Is there a way to disable buttons?
Physical buttons? Software buttons?
#1284965988642590891 or #1284966353798697001 though.
It could have been worse. It could have been Joker 2
Where do I find channel related to smart lights/switches?
No such tags in hardware nor related tech
You don't need tags for everything
(Discord doesn't support infinite tags anyway)
See #find-support for whether you want #1284966582375813201, #1284966617670881350, or #1284966353798697001
I think there's just a tag called Tag, if no tags match
Ooh okay, haha
In for a weirdo chick club tag game?
Haha yeeeees
Am I crazy or is today supposed to be beta day?
Prolly more assistant stuff that will break on my system.
3 assist endpoints are down since last month release
Does the voice expose entity section, work when you manually configure google assistant, or isn't only for nabu casa method?
Only for UI configured integrations
Oh, so I need to expose the entities in the configuration file? I was wondering why nothing was syncing all this time 🤦♂️
Remember to only add the entities you want to add. When i still used google it happily turned of the tv when i order to turn of the lights. From time to time
Hi Ready!
can we do release party here?
I think it might be expensive…
I totally thought that was the bridge of a ship overlooking the water at first 🙂
Where is this?
Do you not know where we are?
Lmao I am not going to tell you it’s the event in this server right now.

anyone her have experience with "SLZB-06M" or know which thread i'd have to check to get some info
#1284966617670881350 with the Zigbee tag
Explain the problem and somebody can help
done 🙂 I'll see what gives 🙂
the whole SLZB vs its documentation is pretty labyrinth like or absent 🙂
All virtual beers in this channel are on me.
Oh..
I need to read better.
No idea.
Oh SF. Wish I knew.
you ever want to type something but then second guess it....
Well, there was that one... y'know, nevermind.

If i die am i able to hunt my house using home assistant?
When i had a psychoses i tought my pc was haunted.
That it sometimes typed out it self did not help.
Did it really need to have a butthole?
ever see a duck without one?
I dont trust any with out a buthole.
"Ducks must be used in the drama party"
Dont feed ducks bread btw. Its bad nutrition and makes the male ducks intrested in orgies. Some how oke in the 80ties but now we should know better.
We've got a few that hang around the stream at the bottom of our property. They seem to like oats, which are supposed to be fine for them
More than a few of the ducks have less than the full quota of legs, because apparently the big-ass eels in the stream think those are a tasty treat
Yes.. no.. maybe.. let me get back to you..
When you put it like that 😄
4th time...let's see how goes
you know the plant doesn't grow from the tag right?
It helps with identity
"this is a plant. it is green."
Everytime I want tarragon, nothing at the store and plants are dead. 😕
Need to add a 2nd rachio for veggies.
did you just pour a bag of miracle grow over the sand and plant in that?
Not needed.
Sonoma, you could always go to the big city and help the guy out you know
I wish I could offer him mashed potatoes and collard greens
unless you were born there and built up the immunity to the toxins in the air and everywhere around you, you would just die. so too risk for clean air breathers
Seen anything cleaner and crispier than this?
pan the camera down to ground level lol
also, can I just say that with a name like SONOMA it baffles me that you don’t like california
that makes no sense
Secretly he is in love
that dosen't mean anything lol
it’s not much of a secret lol
Some of the best wine. Means everything

you can find that in Kansas
I’ve always thought that would be a blast
They wouldn't know what to do with it.
I hear you man, 80's are rough
speaking of the 80's.. like a double whammy for you.. a time when California was actually cool now forever gone
now we have to like go to rio to get the same vibe
I didn't know you lip synced at karaoke's
Talking about music need to add 2 more subs to the backyard
not earthquakey enough back there for you yet?
I was checking today not enough bass coverage in 2 areas. 6 should do it.
I should spend less time roaming in the backyard
your tarragon not feeling the beat?
That area is music free
poor plants.. have to suffer just listening to tweeter speakers
I had some DVC 8" in that area but moved them lol
welcome to retirement
Adding the subs means 1 more 1200w class D, yikes
just make sure you have an adequate fence built to keep you in.. nothing worse than seeing senile old farts wander the neighborhood lost

You would still need a toner!?
the racoons and possum have gone back to that same spot i had the food pan for two nights now after I had picked up lol
reolink has had to have at least 4 different hardware specs 510 cameras over the last few years. drives me nut that the newer variations have animal detect but the older ones can't get it

Anyone track temps inside a freezer? Trying to find a solution that local only
Good question for #1284966353798697001
I have made quite a few temp management devices for restaurants and such. Do you need the probe to interface with other electronics or just a screen to display it?
I made a thread in hardware about it. I'm planning the setup to be a Home Assistant Yellow, a PoE Android tablet constantly showing stats with a TTS function for certain events (like freezer OOB condition), and zigbee sensors for an all local set up
I've been running a Xiaomi LYWSD03MMC (sending bthome adverts using pvvx firmware and esphome proxies) in my freezer and an esp8266 with bmp280 in the fridge, as well as a pair of ds18b20's in the freezer (one on the coil, one free-air) for must be more than a year now and no problems. - wifi and bt both seem to make it out of the fridge ok (it's an older one, sheet-metal door panels etc). BMP280 did not very much enjoy being in the freezer, during defrost the condensation causes the humi part to offline, but the temp still worked. Seems OK in fridge, but it's a domestic situation with only 2 people most of the time - if the door were open more often I'd expect more reliability issues with the bmp280 copping condensation. ds18b20's have been rock-solid though.

i need help now
why can ii just just a fix

- The error message tells you the problem
- I told you the fix
If you need more help please post in #1284966582375813201
That's a topic for #1284960456880029707
thank all fixed im less stressed now
Yo i am looking for some advice on how the switches / switch relay for light switches work, what happens if your network / ha is offline? i am hoping that the switch has a backup mode where when offline it switches to a "dumb mode" and just does the default toggle the light, i have tried researching online and seen that some more expensive / custom built ones have an option to do this but was wanting this as a standard, also any recommendations about whether to replace the switches or add relays?
#1284966353798697001 can help, but it depends on the switch
(also, don't put smart bulbs on switches)
i have all smart bulbs throughout the house, is this going to be an issue?
i dont think this solution makes sense, but there is a solution that does make sense
if your switches are controlled via home assistant, then how do you expect them to switch over to (not smart bulb mode) when they lose that connection to home assistant?
what you can do is use the same protocol for light switch and bulb such as zigbee light switch (inovelli blue for example) and a hue bulb, and then use zigbee binding to pair them, so that every tap on up paddle turns the light on, regardless of home assistant. the downside here is there's no override from home assistant to do other automations with a single tap then.. the binding is gonna make that single tap turn the light on, always, no matter what hass does
Okay i see, that makes complete sense when i think about it, the issue is my partner is not as big of an adopter of the "smart home" as i am and constantly turns everything off at the wall meaning most cool automations do not work half the time :/
Although the counter argument is my automations are quite simple and do not work perfectly so i can see why, maybe if i made it so seamless that it requires 0 interaction the mindset would change ig
The Principle Of Least Astonishment means that things should work in an obvious way - don't expect that you can teach people to do things differently to how they've always done it
I love tech and I love home automation. Still, your partner is right 😄
What about when you have visitors? They shouldn't have to know how to 'use' your house.
Hi, is RPi zero 2 good for home assistant?
It's a fun toy but I wouldn't use it for anything but experiments. For starters, you don't want to run HA off an SD card - they die frequently with all the reads and writes. An NUC would be better.
And 512MB of RAM isn't enough.
There's a reason HAOS doesn't support it
I currently flashing a sd for my new pi 2 zero. Fun stuff but you most know what your doing.
Flashing an SD isn't hard. Having your server die every time you need to flash a new one is just annoying. No point picking something so fragile.
Depends what your doing. I dont use much read write and use a ramdisk
Without RAM?
Its for my roaming music pi. Connected to a bluetooth speaker. So when im in the park i can play any music i want using my phone as control trough homeassistant but dont use my phones audio what normal bluetooth speakers do.
I may be daft but i know what im doing.
You can go past pluto with less.
Sometimes it is, I tried that last year and my wife walked in on me doing it. #awkward 😬
@azure rock what do you wheel? We have a JLUR on 37's with a hodgepodge of lift stuff(evo control arms, synergy springs, fox shocks etc) and a JK with 35 similar hodgepodge
I rebuild Jeeps and early Bronco's mostly, but haven't in a few years due to just life being too busy to take on another one. It wouldn't be unusual for me to put $40K worth of upgrades on a frame up resto on one, with lockers and mudders, etc - the whole works. My last one was a 72 CJ5, start with nothing more than a frame and ended with a badass wheeler in the end
Personally I prefer CJ over JK for this, and EB over LB.
So happy for Paulus, the NC team and the HA community for their recognition by Github. This is truly a fun, exciting and vigorous community that I'm pleasedto be part of.
yesterday was amazing watching the talk live
Happy Christmas everyone
I had a mtg during the event yesterday, but just watched the video. It was great!
I was really annoyed by all the 12 year olds in the chat talking about that other platform
impatient fucks
oh man, we pressed the "start event" button and suddenly we had 370 people in a channel
Another great part about the stream

We’re back for day 2 of GitHub Universe, a one-of-a-kind global event for developers, security professionals, and enterprise leaders. In this keynote, GitHub...
oooooooooooh, I just skipped to that portion of the stream. Apparently they were teenagers 🤣
Not really looking for support, just wondering if anyone has any easier approaches than this.
I need to very quickly come up with a way to log 150f water temperatures in a tank for a week or so for concrete curing.
I'm thinking of using either a Govee or Inkbird BBQ thermometer over BLE. That sound like the ticket? If I could find a cheap generic BLE/Zigbee/Z-Wave/Whatever data logger that'd work great instead but I haven't been able to find such a thing.
I'd build my own with some ESP shenanigans but I don't have time for that, gotta get something reliable within about a week.
That is a good topic for https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1286093250482016328
@real frigate is your valetudo vacuum still functioning?
Yup. But she’s getting old and about to be replaced soon. lol
you're getting a non-valetudo one to replace?
Yeah… thinking about a Narwal actually.
did you ever set up the fancy map cards, etc?
Those need lots of water and have a big dangerous horn...
I mean… I do have fish tanks. lol
Fancy? No. But the MQTT Camera integration is setup and works really well.
They average 1 ton...
I could probably eat that much sushi. Wait wut are we talking about again?
can you direct it to a room from that?
Hmmmm dunno. Hold on, I’ll paste the url for the integration.
Ifyou have to tell a narwal to get a room, you have too many narwalls in your house.
i mean, you'd need at least 2, to combat the loneliness
thank you!!
@tidal bronze Got your gross soup bucket all ready to go for Halloween?
Soup? I thought that was if one of the little ones needed a potty break...
You know the best part about having 2 children who PC game is....
I get new parts more often!
Brb, having kids so I can harvest their parts. Wait, that came out wrong...
I can't have kids anyway. I don't have room in my steam family library.
exact opposite for me, I just get the latest and greatest, they get my hand me down stuff, currently a 7800x3d so not to bad for them
Didn't know where else to show this off, but cool automation I made with my car, smart lights and doorbell
its snowing here so I'm just going to sit at the end of the driveway and have a fire in a fire pit with a beer
anyone got any experience with ble and apple devices?
i have it all set up on my phone and apple watch using irk and private ble device integration, but shows unknown unless i am physically using the device, i hoped maybe the apple watch would send out a periodic update to the phone or something but so far its fairly useless if i go into a room and sit down it has no idea i am there unless i tap my watch
They do in #1284966617670881350
i did a search for ble and apple watch ble and didnt find much in the server so put it here, i might be using discord wrong tho?
Just post your question there and someone with a good or less good idea might answer.
Ah i see okay thank you i have posted
this was exactly what I needed, thank you so much!!
Yes sir. I don't think we have many kids in this community anymore. So bucket too much.
what the adults don't come through and sip from the bucket?
Not yet
your community probably does freaky stuff if it's most just adults lol
all the pineapples in the front yards
I must confess I'm completely at a loss at the current structure of this discord. I'm having an issue with Shelly Devices and MQTT Integration and don't have a breeze of an idea on where to post that xD
#1284966582375813201 for the MQTT and Shelly integration
I’m actually interested to know if there’s been any assessment of the new Discord structure?
Well I was a bit torn between add-ons, hardware and integration xD find-a-channel honestly did more to confuse me than help me 😅
Thanks anyways 👍
I think there are kids but rarely see them. Rarely see people anyway
Not scientifically proven, but: less support requests get lost in the chat stream
that sounded really bad.. you know that right? lol
Its the best thing you know right. The amount of people I encounter when I am out, do you honestly think I want to see any around when I'm home? 😆
what a hermit
Looks interesting, have you tried it? I will have to research this brand's rep
Hey folks, can anyone suggest the quickest way to play a local file scream.mp3 on motion 😉
Ran out of time to research before Halloween
Sonos or google home?

did we check if that fridge has #the-water-cooler ?
You might have to bring it into #the-workshop to cut it open and look
cut it open -> does it bleed. [no] Yay you can fix it. [Yes] your in trouble.
Should it move, but doesn't: WD-40
Does it move, but shouldn't: duct tape
I rather use my meds when i have unwanted movements due to side affects
Not sure if this is the right place for this, but is there any best practice people have discovered with regard to how to set up devices in HomeKit Bridge and not get duplicates with their native HomeKit integrations? I have devices that natively integrate to HomeKit (eg: Lutron/Hue/etc.) which I want to leave to their integration but also have them visible for status/etc. in HA.
Is the key to just set up HomeKit Bridge device-by-device instead of running it as a bridge since the categories could overlap between native HomeKit devices as well as desired integrations from HA? Or is there a way to just have it only port over devices tagged with a certain label? Thanks in advance!
#1284966582375813201 can help
So it's finally safe in here again? 😬
from molestation... never!
Grumble AAA game, from a billion dollar publisher, but run's like poo on top end hardware for no discerable reason
well now I feel bad, its not EA, its stupid windows, runs buttery smooth on ultra in linux :/
thats not windows, that's the software
Whatever it is, just happy its playable
having options is good :)

Set the trial camera back up in the backyard last night, July 18th, 2024, after a long break. This raccoon stole the show by untying an old rope in its path and tying it out of the way.
After asking the public for suggestions, I've named the clever raccoon Knottingham. Below is a link to Knottingham and two young friends/family members fiddling...
I muted that shit pretty quick
What blogs/tech sites are people reading these days? I’m removing reddit from my life, pretty sick of the blatant AI posts.
such a fitting sound track
I didn't think about it in time but the reolink one allows custom auto replies and I meant to record spooky sounds as a reply to play every time the kids rang it
Does home assistant work with Phillips smart wifi bulbs?
Can scripts automatically trigger, or do you need an automation to trigger them?
Haven't used scripts at all yet.
you need an automation or a button
they are essentially the action part of an automation
That's what I assumed, but I wanted to make sure
yes for both Hue and Wiz
Not that it'd really matter if it checked the temperature too often.
They are so smart
yes its a wiz assistant bulb will it work?
ive got an expo on computer science next Tuesday so i have to order he bulb quick

We'd about 5% take apples over sweets
and that's how you end up with random maleware running on your network
"Lets get these cheap temp sensors"
but this is zigbee
and that's how petros comments are irrelevant
Although, I guess you also have bad zigbee devices that just take down networks by being noisy
Mesh spamming... I've had a few sensors like that when I was starting out my mesh and OMG was I ready to just say screw it to Zigbee altogether.
Worse one (recently) was a Tuya mmWave sensor that was trying to send updates every 100ms to the mesh updating a stupid lux value. No matter what I did with debouncing in z2m and such, it would still just do what it wanted. I was SO happy to rip that thing out.
hello, i have a question and i have no ideea which is the right channel for this
i have followe this https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/google_assistant/#yaml-configuration, now i can see some devices on my google ho me app from android
my questions are
- can't i also see there the input number?
- can i usethe google assistant tts to trigger a home assistant automation? (like instead of typing in the home assistant chat box)
There’s no support here - only chill.
Im sure we cover mental support in this channel
just hit 500 days of uptime on my ubiquiti router and AP
The USG was my favorite Unifi device (aside from the UDMP). I think I hit something like 400 days of uptime once and then a storm came along and took out the power longer than my UPS could go for.
yeah it would've been higher if a computer didn't short out 500 days ago lol
hahaha fair
I wonder how long it will last though, I've lately noticed that a coil started whining
I did such horrible things to my USG though. When I first got fiber and deleted the ATT modem... oh man, that was fun. heh
TBF, mine was like 5(?) years old and only got replaced when the backplane started having issues and randomly wiping the ARP table whenever someone sneezed in the house.
Yes
What zigbee RBG lights do you guys like for your setup? I have some Heus, but they're starting to die/flicker so it might be time to replace soon.
Hue, Innr, Gledopto, Tradfri
#1284966353798697001 with the recommendations tag would be a better place to ask though
What’s everyone’s thought on this solar quote: $23,500 for 6.7kw solar and a Tesla power wall 3 battery?
Solar is $2.03 per W
It depends on how the ownership etc is structured in the quote....
I need to do that for my setup. On AT&T business so I could get public IPs
100% would NOT recommend. Zero out of 10 stars. ATT and their "smart AI scan your traffic" crap makes it a cat and mouse game of if the certs will stay valid and endpoints up. It's a nightmare. Finally just threw my modem into full passthru mode and deal with it on the UDMP side.
Aaah fun, well good to know!
To run a dashboard on a Raspberry PI, do you guys recommend raspberry pi os in a browser or LineageOS?
Raspbian desktop with chrome in kiosk mode would be my go-to. Lineage gets weird sometimes.
Pardon my ignorance, but does kiosk mode just mean F11? Or is there a way to make it full screen automatically?
- FullyKiosk
but that's for Android, I don't know what the equivalent would be for Linux
Xdotool a cli script can press F11
qutebrowser can be configured to leave out the nav bar
kiosk mode just removes the url bar and other things to make it just show what's on the screen nothing else i think
havent used that in years...
https://blog.dakboard.com/diy-wall-display/ back when this was cool
The walls are like 10ishk of that?
Seems a bit too expensive
I believe so
They were the cheapest quote
Also it’s 23k now because of power wall shipping delays
So they are cutting a discount
All the other quotes were 28-30k
Keep in mind this is socal pricing
Actually power wall was 9500 per quote now that I’m looking at it
Other vendor I was considering (before they suggested I commit tax fraud for the solar rebate) wanted to charge 13k for the pw3
gotta be careful with that. i've read articles and there are even YT videos on people who got hosed taking the lowest bid on a solar install
They all seem to go out of business or get acquired, too
Can someone please help me get nest integrated? I have followed the documentation about 10 times and can not get it going. I am able to get it to authenticate but devices are not showing up. I have tried restarting the nest, moving it to a different/fake room. The API looks like it is active. I am not sure where to go from here
That's an #1284966582375813201
if you are planning to go heavy with the google stuff.. just do nabu.. in the long run it so much less annoying
I haven't even checked mine to see if it still works lol
Is there a frigate addon discord?
Sad. Wanted to say im thankful and happy with the new beta search feature. But you know with threads......
Honestly home assistant has a forum already, i find it on this discord sad.
I don't understand, what that has to do with Frigate not setting up their own Discord and relying on others for support outside of GitHub. Whatever.
welcome to your legacy lol
😆
You’re not wrong.
I did get several compliments on it in person while at GitHub Universe, though!

do people complain in person tho?
They complained about problems they had in HA itself, so probably.
yea but that isn't like directed
I don't think people complain directly in person anymore.. well younger people.. us older people have no issues lol
I think one person did say they weren’t a fan of the forums style while at the meet up, but Discord also isn’t their favorite platform.
i'm going to be like that here soon, silly to update every month to install where you don't do much adding too lol
That’s great, though, right? Don’t HAVE to update to keep things working.
well the downside is falling behind breaking changes
and since those are only listed on the blog.. one would have to do some back research just to ensure they weren't down for x amount of time due to something they had no clue about
HA need to just hurry up and figure out an auto update method that can't break anything lol
That would be boring. No Alexa Media Player drama and so on.
Welp, I bought more tuya devices because they were cheap and surprised pikachu'd when they weren't perfect.
rotf
Very interesting fact! Very well put together… I can correlate the rise in crime, homelessness, divorces, cheating. The loss of intelligence from our children….. to our social ills to this. It would be interesting to see comparisons to European countries …
This is a time line of time we spend on things
that video is so funny yet so scary
the channel that posted that video is an idiot but that video was funny
🤣
Lol, I see how it is
I miss boughed wifi powerplugs instead of zigbee. luckaly some tuya. Just setup local tuya integation
but arnt we amongst friends right now.
I'm keeping my HA stuff to zigbee and Zwave only (barring obvious exceptions like smart TVs). I don't want smart devices junking up my IP assignments.
if you can count some online racoon as friend
then you gonna hate matter, kick me elmo
Yup :P
I don't trust smart devices on Wi-Fi anyway tbh. I need to move my hue stuff over to ZHA so I can remove the hub.
doesnt help Sono. tuya has many diffrent brand names
you can always tell if it's tuya before you buy lol
I mean, my latest purchase was smart plugs. Was hoping 20A rating meant they wouldn't heat up at all when in use, but no such luck.
But I knew I was buying Tuya. I made that choice consciously.
was the brand name in chinese symbols?
Brand name was Tuya :P
I don't think i've seen a 20amp smart plug
I got two.
you shouldn't be plugging crap that needs over 15amp in into one regardless
oh. 120volt right? nothing scarry you peeps are doing?
I mean, technically I'm only running around five amps right now. But that heater goes up to 1850W, so I figured a safety net would be good in case someone switched it to high by mistake.
I run an window ac during summer and a space heater during winter off one without issue and the 1500w rating is the suggested cap for a standard 15amp house breaker anyways
The temperature graph from the Shelly mini that I installed for the path lights is funny.
Doubt the lights are more than about 0.75A total, so I'd imagine the relay's coil is doing most of the heating.
thats internal temp
spikes when under load
or when the space around the unit collects heat
It's fairly tightly packed into a plastic junction box in the crawl space under the house
I'm not entirely sure why they bother showing you the temperature, but hey, silly shark fin graph 😛
well they do have temp limits
maybe to make sure the thing isn't going to burn up.. dunno
most likely just an added gimmick to make the sale sound better
Probably
Does anyone know if there's (maybe via HACS) something that makes automation creation a bit faster and "more assisted"?
I thought something along the lines of "choose a device > press a button > ask what the button should do" and so on.
That's called Blueprints
And the automation UI does that to an extent. But use entities not devices, it'll save you a world of hurt later.
What the... I think TikTok is listening, literally right now I got a Smart Home guy on TT showing "Switch Manager" from HACS doing exactly what I wanted to do here via a GUI, just clicking the button you want and then adding the action it should do
... the internet works in mysterious ways sometimes
tiktok should die in a fire
There are marketiers marketing that
Just realized I may be hard-pressed to fit a 120vac-3.3vdc converter in a single-gang wall switch box with everything else...
you shouldn't do that anyways
Why?
they generate heat
Yeah, but what is the alternative if I want to slap a z-wave chip into such a box?
Make sure the heat can go somewhere
you are going to have to elaborate more. why in a single gang box?
shared with what? a switch?
Swamp cooler control box. Figuring out the hardware I'll need at the moment. The z-wave chip is 3.3vdc 30mA peak.
just a relay?
I mean, I could always toss a two AA battery caddy in there instead, but that's not small either and batteries suck.
why not just buy a zwave switch
Three position for the fan motor, two position (open and closed) for the pump, both 120vac.
I haven't seen a switch that'll do what I need at all, much less in single gang.
Could always widen the box if I have to, but I'd rather not if I can avoid it.
sounds like maybe you might need to put in a double.. BUT I believe there are zwave modules much like how the shellies are, there might even be a double version like the shelly 2
those modules are designed to go in behind a physical switch, even the double horizontal switches
Main reason I'd rather not widen the box is because we have three swamp coolers, one switch is in an inconvenient spot and one is in an outside wall.
Only one is where it'd be convenient to do.
not sure if the dimmer portion has options or not
...thanks Amazon. Just crash out of that link why don't you.
The concept is good, but that really wouldn't do the job.
I'm setting this up in part for my parents, who're both 79. Part of the requirements is that I need to be able to switch control between manual and automatic. I just figured I'd add a button to toggle a software switch and use that as a condition in the automation. Then we can just switch it to manual during the winter months when the coolers are drained and covered, and switch back to automatic for the summer when the coolers are set up again.
how does that not work?
I mean, I could try to do everything through HA, but my father in particular would get frustrated and end up turning off my pihole by mistake or something.
How does it work? It needs to be able to toggle the pump and switch the fan between three states (including off). The dimming could cause serious problems, and I don't see any way to rig up the dual-state motor.
yea the dimming is what I wasn't sure about. does the motor use seperate leads for high/low etc?
Yes
both are always on at same time right? the fan and pump?
It's a standard swamp cooler, which means it's normally controlled by this:
And no, pump and fan need to be controllable individually.
The vent options are pump off, the cool options are pump on.
That's the typical switch. The only "smart" one I found is a headache and a half and requires running extra wiring to the coolers.
does the switch between the pump being in high or low need to be automated?
I have no idea what you're asking.
oh its the fan that has a high and low
Yes
does that need to be automated? switching between high and low? or can just on or off be ok?
These are very simple systems. There's a block of cardboard-like media, a pump to saturate it with water, and a fan to pull air through it.
In the height of the summer months, high and low matter. Low is fine until you start getting over 90F in the day, then you need high.
I was planning on automating it based on forecast.
so it "has" to be automated or can the switching between high and low be manual?
It -could- not be smart at all. But it -should- be automated. If I'm going to do this, stopping halfway sucks.
your putting yourself in a bind being locked to a single gang box BUT you can use a 3 way physical switch to swap between low and high and use a zwave double module behind the switch to operate power to the 3 way switch and to the pump
Is the fan a kind where you have to supply power to only low or high and it gets angry if you do both, or if you power both does it just run on high?
I don't honestly know. I would assume powering both is bad, but I'd have to look into it.
if there are two leads supplying power to both at same time would be bad lol
Yeah, that was my assumption.
my attic fan motor looks like the same wiring as what kick posted. i use a 3 way switch to swap between low and high mode on it
what I posted above should work
in a single gang
BUT you do lose out automating swapping between low and high
however
you could use a smart 3 way switch lol
and a module behind it
that be super tight tho, since smart switches are usually thicker

homeassistant likes mqtt right? mosquitto or emqx?
interesting. wonder what the challenge was
not tried emqx but I use mosquitto all the time without issue
wtf the tesla doorlocks and other things are powered off a seperate 12v battery. i didn't know that
The challenge was that it didn't like the gigantic number of topics with super long payloads
Pass 🙂
oh how interesting.. its supposed to be the more scalable one
i'm waiting for the fully automatic with rotating brushes model myself
It was really buggy and unstable
I think that big cat doesn't need more treats
It was funny to see him squeeze through the opening, though
we currently have one of those arch brush things and the cats love to "self sooth" on it all the time
it removing access hair is just a bonus lol
yah. I think the newer cars maybe use the main battery for the 12v system, but I could be wrong on that
Yes the feature of not having a key
Not like they'd get far if they try to steal it :^)
-Hey all. Not sure what Support channel this falls under or if this is a RPi Community question.
-Since I installed Home Assistant OS via the Pi Imager I can't seem to gain access to the RPi4 itself via SSH.
-I've tried the SSH plugin via HAOS and Putty on my PC. Connection Refused which means, to me at least, I'm on the right ip/port being it was not a refused reply.
I've searched quite a bit but to no avail.
You should probably ask in #1284965172053807145
Will Do - TY @distant junco !
almost commented to that but then i'd be just as bad as everyone else in this channel..
Please elaborate.

What software are you guys using for phone gallery backups? Photoprism, nextcloud, combination? Would love to have shared albums with family.
immich
But so far pretty much any is somewhat of a disappointment
Once you have large enough libraries the apps struggle a lot to figure out updates
Im slowing using nextcloud. But i dont know if you easily can create a photo album
They can't build ocis fast enough for how much this is needed
Looks like immich is the easiest one to use. I can't see my grandma navigating through nextcloud... So should I run immich for photos only, then nextcloud for everything else and disabling the nextcloud photo integration as to not confuse everyone including me?
What are ocis?
owncloud infinite scale
kinda a rework to go to significantly debloat it
It's pretty great in that but it's not anywhere close to being complete
If you are trying to use it as if you would use onedrive with a lot of files it's definitely worth looking at
oh nextcloud phots is acutally quite nice.
going to download my google photos. and also put those on my nas
Syncthing. Might not be the best for sharing with family though.
I remember setting up owncloud like 10 years ago. Then I abandoned it and 3 years ago when I came back to set up something similar, suddenly owncloud = bad so installed nextcloud. And now owncloud good again?
Don't u mean nextcloud memories? Iirc nextcloud photos suck
I'm not sure where to look for this... I have setup HA instances at my home and my parents home. My thinking is that I could log into each instance on my phone but I'm not sure if its actually possible to use the HA app (on android) with more than one instance?
edit: https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/getting_started#adding-additional-servers
Hi, I havent tried this, but in the app if you go to settings and look for "Companion App" you can add servers there
#1284965926336335993 can help
unfortunately nextcloud happened to set the wrong priorities suffering from them adding more tools to the owncloud php base which hasn't been exactly great in the first place

The animals, who are originally from North America, typically weigh around 10 kilograms (22 pounds), but large males can reach 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
I just finished Mega Man Legends. What should I play next?
gotta say after having experienced some non optimised software for other stuff, HA's touchscreen support even on the web browser is pretty top notch
I dont even use my trackpad anymore, just touch and keyboard
👍
44 sounds a little low from some of the one's i've seen.
omg guys I'm going crazy. Every saturday somewhere between 12:40pm and 1pm my kitchen lights shut off. I have no idea why. The HA logbook just says it was turned off. No indication why. The TP Link app shows nothing. No automations set up in alexa
I cannot figure this out
Be sure to check your automations
I had a bunch of Matter devices go offline. They came back when I restarted the devices.
But it's funny how I needed to test the automation with those devices many times to get them to work correctly again.
It's like they needed practice to get back in sync or something like that.

Hello everyone. I’m remodeling and currently have very little devices, mostly wifi. I can change protocols at this point and was wondering if I should change to something else. What is recommended? What has a good price?

Ok. This server has changed a lot since it first started…
Yep sure has!
you could almost call it #offtopic-no-support
but that would be too straightforward
What if we seek emotional support?
Then you will be offered a cup of concrete. To harden the fuck up.

Who wants to run a local AI with camera feeds who can tell you what's going on in natural language? I let some (relatives) teens use my back yard and one threw gasoline on a fire pit. I'd love to have a local mutimodal AI that told me things were going south fast
This kind of thing isn't very far away? Bet a 5090 could run it
©Warner Bros. All rights reserved
Oh yea?
Sure, I figured you'd need to run a separate local server with an open source model and a high end GPU
I've seen people tying it to their doorbell and it telling them it was UPS or Amazon or something else happening.
But if you have a gaming PC, it can't always be busy, right? I have ollama set-up.
What do you use that for?
doesn't the frigate beta 15 have that built in it?
My ideal setup is a fully separate NAS with about 70TB of storage, a HA on dedicated hardware, and a homelab server with whatever I need to run local AI models. It ain't gonna make me lag when I'm in a raid
We guys in this discord are gonna have local AIs doing complex tasks for us in 5 years
I use the ollama install to edit my YT video descriptions currently. It's connected to HA but haven't done anything with that connection yet. But stuff like this is possible: https://discord.com/channels/330944238910963714/1285170312840876032
I can't tell if his messages are genuine or AI...
Is this our future on an anonymous Discord?
Is this very server??
they pop in any discord server
Like the Digimon Movie (1999)
I run ollama with 3 local LLMs (gemma2, phi35 and dolphin-mixtral) on a moderate server with 32gb ram and 8gb GPU for creating notifications, weather forecasts, and local camera snapshot processing. It’s not blazing fast like Gemini, but it does work.
I do. lol
hello
I am an ex-programmer but very new to home automation
I wanna know a few things, idk if there's a channel for this so i'll just ask here
- Assuming I dont get Home assistant yellow, do i need a Zigbee dongle if the devices can connect via bluetooth/wifi?
- What is the best human presence detector according to you guys, suggest a budget friendly one and absolute best one please
- What hardware will I need extra to run home assistant on a raspberry pi 4? I have read about home assistant yellow and green but I think just a raspberry pi 4 will be cheaper and will do basically same thing unless something extra is needed

Having a hard time figuring out this flow. I want to have 3 buttons to cast various dashboards of cameras. However, I'd like to change the icon based on whether or not it's currently casting, as well as stop casting if I click on the button again.
I have scripts set up to cast the individual dashboards so that part is done, but I'm stuck on the icons based on state and the stop-on-button-push. Not sure if using an input_select is approprtiate here or some other way of updating state and calling different services. Thank you

@clear ferry I checked your balls earlier today, they are holding up really nicely.
And for everyone else, this is far more amusing if I don't give context 🤣
You said "atx". That's enough context for sensible people to know not to ask more.
I have so many questions but I am not going to ask them.
Because as far i know its regression.
Dont know if beta touched it. Anyway to tired now.
but are you running the beta?

His balls are great
Exactly this
would i mention beta if i didnt so.. yeah i run beta
That's what I was wondering. There are people who go into beta to talk about their issue they have with previous versions

Well what be touched should be in the release notes. but im in the bus.

any news on the rumored speaker from home assistant..?
Finally, AD with Fedora Workstations.
No public announcements. Some early testers/devs have received them. So things are progressing.
can't wait to finally get rid of my google mini speakers.
Hello! One of the things I have been trying to do with my instance is create a Dungeons and Dragons room controller! As I add more and more scenes, my automations are getting very complicated and difficult to replicate (16 Lights, Screen, Audio, and Google Home for Sound Effects). What I want to do is create an add-on for the community that lets you create games in a room. DnD, Family Feud, etc is what I was thinking. It would be a more in depth version of Philips Hue entertainment zones and what you can do with them. I was looking for feasibility and feedback on the idea of this project before I take a swing at it (Who knows maybe people prefer their large automations for this kind of thing). Thanks!
If one person finds a need for something, there will surely be others. That's just the fact of things so if this is something you want to create for yourself and hope others will find use out of as well, rest assured others will.
I imagine it working somewhat like the alarmo add-on. Adding in lights, screens, and speakers to a "room" and then using actions on when said room will trigger, and when the sound effects will become options on a dashboard. Does this seem like the right way to go or should this be more of a blueprint or something else?
Noone can really answer that. This is a project in your head and it can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. Some of the "integrations/addons" that get made for HA grow quite large and have people helping contributes etc etc.
There really is no limit what you could have an addon for this purpose do.
many plug in type zigbee devices can act as routers however not all lights can, you will have to make sure whatever your looking at can. also while the idea of "routing" to extend zigbee coverage sounds great on paper, it is not always so simple. routing devices range and performance can range all over the place and devices that have to connect to them can sometimes be spotty
why they always recommend putting the coordinator in the very middle of a mesh
depends what materials and interferences the signal has to overcome
weird
the slotted and castle nut are the same
that prevailing torque lock nut is the only one I've never used
I am in the weird position of probably going to call ahead to a hotel and ask them if I can temporarily swap out their light bulbs in a room

for what purpose
group managed to secure a suite at a party con
friend of mine wants to DJ a room party
wanted to see what I could do for lighting for that
if you rented the room, why do you have to ask? why not just swap them out when you get there?
friend is worried hotel will get angry
as long as you put the ones you took out back when you leave
That's my thoughts
though technically, I'd probably want to know what kind of bulbs are used
would be pretty stupid to show up with the wrong kinds
I initially though HA would be a good fit, but he has a DMX controller
that's probably going to be the better option
can use Art-Net
you could always call and ask but that would be a weird conversation. Hotels/Motels are in to make money which means they use readily available cheap replaceable fixtures etc. I dunno what country you are in but here in the US every hotel i've ever been in has been the traditional screw in light bulb. once in awhile you might see a florecent tube in like a bathroom
Change lights in a hotel room huh? 🤣
I've worked staff for a bunch of conventions. As long as nothing is damaged and it's put back the way you found it when you leave, rearranging the room is perfectly fine
you don't want to have better mood lighting while you stare out the window at all the people sweating outside?
in china?
Even here. Other than some fancy ornamental fixture with Edison vibe most lighting is embedded.
China was next level 10 years ago. US hotel lighting needs some TLC for sure. 😆
that's a stupid move imo
Definitely easy on the eyes and uniform.
but costs more to replace assuming it could be replaced with exact part
even incandescent lights were more recycable than the led ones lol
ah yes trustworthy multi functional space heaters
I am tired of Amazon A19 range, completely useless
just don't get the 100w bulbs
Not having that warmth is killing the mood of everyone which is why society is going mad!!!!!1111
what do you mean by range?
Thank you for joining my ted talk
Everything with A19 base
you mean the fixtures?
you are not making a whole lot of sense.. you mean your just tired of bulbs? want everything to be strips?
So when you hear A19 you automatically lean to fixtures? Middle earth is strange
wtf does a19 base mean then?
and if you are refering to the actual bulbs, wtf did you mean by range? which was my very first question lmao
Looks like things confuse you a lot and that frustrates you eh
Turn on that dehumidifier
your as bad as that guy who says "that one" and point in a general direction of a wall full of shit
Yep, that's the one
here get you some tiki sconces for 500 a pop lol https://a19.com/shop/tiki-totem-sconce/
A19?
yup
Is this a regular sized cylinder
Range?
about that much
a couple meters depending on how much you throw it
do they even make bulbs that aren't CW?
Checking what's available in the spectrum
is that what you meant by range? the color range?
how is an led bulb any diffrent than an led strip? lol
other than you can easily replace the bulb
I need to try Phillips bulbs.
ah.. you been buying the @clear ferry norwat special and got tired of the pastels lmao
Pastel?
you don't remember his christmas lights?
Oh lmao. Yep.
house looked like he was throwing a baby shower complete with a huge lit up penguin

whoa, woke up to all this
Can't disagree
Is anyone in here decent at coding and webhooks/writing integrations? I just have a guy who got under my skin a bit on instagram and am curious what it would take to do what he’s doing, but open source free instead of charging a subscription to people…
All the information and tools to learn how to do what you want is online and available. You just have to be willing to learn.
Does anyone use HA for task management? I’ve been looking for ideas and examples
Yes people do, you can ask in #1284965988642590891 for help/ideas with the home assistant todo feature
anyone use the third reality zigbee bulbs?
No
amazon is doing 4 for 30 bucks which is decent
my current bulbs which are wifi was 3 for 25
I know their other stuff is pretty good. May be worth taking a flyer on them
they no longer sell them so I gotta switch to something. thinking of switching to zigbee
Code in progress always recommends wiz, but I think that’s WiFi?
Jira Assistant :P
with this one exception of thirdreality on average zigbee bulbs are like way more over wifi ones
it's crazy
I do like the majority I see all have the matter stamp
not that I would use matter but still
The only other zigbee ones I’ve seen are hue. I had a couple zwave bulbs back in the day that sucked
We should be in #1284966353798697001
not really. there is nothing support about this
There is a recommendation tag
how can you recommend something you never used?
🙃
I went ahead and bought the TR ones. so i'll know for next time if they are shit or not lol
I have TR plugs and a tilt sensor and those work just fine so color range and brightness will be the deciding factor on if these are shit

I genuinely don't know where to ask this. This feels like such a basic question yet I am completely lost.
I have been using HA OS for a few months now, configuring stuff via the UI. Now I want to look into the YAML config files, make things declarative, put it in a git repo etc.
But I cannot for the life of me find the configuration for most of the addons I have installed.
For example I see the config files for zigbee2mqtt and glances, but not wireguard, influxdb, and others.
Where should I look? Where should I ask these questions?

since i only have one VM that is turned of default i dont need a whole libvirt integration. reverting to cli
Those configs aren't exposed via text files that you can alter.
Typically you configure things via configuration.yaml or the UI. They never reside in both places
stupid chatgtp and outdated syntax
And addon configurations are buried inside an addons directory on the OS that's not accessible unless you know what you're doing.
Oh damn I see. That's ... very unfortunate!
Just make backups
How could I work on moving my configuration to configuration.yaml?
you can't move everything into configuration.yaml and you can't move addon configs into configuration.yaml
Use the built in backup system
Okay
So I'm a little confused now, all the guides I see people configuring YAMLs, I just struggle to figure out where that YAML resides
that's inside configuration.yaml
But that is not addon configuration
addon configurations are not inside configuration.yaml, they never have been
they never have been editable outside the UI either
so I'm not sure where you're seeing people editing those configs via yaml
There's an option in the UI that allows you to view the addon config as yaml
I perhaps naively assumed that because you can view the addon config as YAML in the UI it would also be editable as such on the filesystem 😅
is there any way to overwrite the state text in dashboards? I have a bunch of doors and want them to list Open/Closed instead of On/Off, but no matter what I do in my raw yaml I don't seem to be able to replace this unless I write custom templates per door in configuration.yaml which seems like a very unclean solution to my problem
The answer will be device_class, bit you didn't say where these door sensors came from.
More a topic for #1284965988642590891 though
yeah but with the new server design all channels are locked down to read only, and quetsions are forwarded here if I understood the community-updates correctly
they are a collection of aqara/shelly/sonoff door and window sensors. I have them classified as Window and Door respectively in the entity properties window I can bring up from the cog in the overview pane. Is this what you are referring to?
Those are the old channels.
The new ones are forum style. If you cannot see them, go to id:customize and select them to be shown. There is also #find-support for further guidance.
in the entity card the sensor would show Open and Closed, so I'm a little baffled that the state in dashboards is forcing it to on/off
yeah, I noticed. Discord is a very poor substitute for a forum or reddit, so I gave it a few searches and then opted to chat about the problem instead. That's why I would use Discord anyway.
This isn't a support channel. The support forum channels are meant for that. Or for short questions, the #the-workshop channel can be used.
There’s no support here - only chill.
device_class is set to Window... so it should report state as Open, interesting...
For stock cards anyway
Then it's definitely #1284965988642590891
Man, I’m looking at the Support channels and everybody’s problems are so advanced, I’m just just starting out with Home Assistant and I am so lost with so many different issues and I don’t know anybody that uses Home Assistant so I’m not sure if this is a problem because I am blind and using voice over to access Home Assistant or if it is Just me doing things wrong
Like as an example, I have three cameras from aqara and I can’t even figure out how to get them to show up in Home Assistant. The only thing I can find to add the devices is either a matter device or a Zigby device, but these cameras are neither.
Everyone has started at zero sometime ago. Don't hesitate to post support requests to the channels, even if you think, they might be trivial. Even if they are, you likely will get a hint in the right direction.
I want to start a project, create my own esp32 smart photo frame, but i want to use an existing photo frame, any recommendations on a 7x5 / 9x7 lcd display that integrates with esp32 natively?
I guess, it’s just so hard for me, like I said, not knowing if it’s just something that I can’t do because I need VoiceOver on or is it that I just really don’t know how or what I’m doing in this thing and I don’t know why just I don’t wanna waste peoples time if it is because it’s something that can’t be done with VoiceOver on
The ESPHome Discord might be the better place to ask that specific question.
Yeah i tried there first but its so inactive that i don't think i will get a response, its just overwhelming for me
You can try the #1284966353798697001 channel with the "Recommendation" tag, but the ESPHome experts are more likely active on their Discord.
In your case I would start in the #1284966353798697001 channel with the "Cameras" and "New to HA" tags to get advice on how to integrate them in Home Assistant. If you need help with the specific integration, the #1284966582375813201 channel can help. And if you need help to get the integrated cameras on your dashboard, the channel #1284965988642590891 can be helpful to you.
As I said, don't hesitate to ask. Not everything is as obvious for beginners as it looks to more advanced users.
when you have a sensor, is there any way in home assistant to list all the possible states it can report or is home assistant blind to what these can be?
Depends on the integration and entity
eumm. what is a good method. when you want to share a very limited dashboard of hass to someone?
Its a 9 year old who wants to be a hacker. i have a kali setup. but it takes quite some ram on my server so i want it off when not used.
It's curious to me how you can barely interact with scenes before you end up activating them. I was renaming some scenes to make it easier to find and lights were just coming and going all over the house. 😂
Wife was solidly confused. 😅
I mean ... that is in the spirit of doing twice the work to do simple things ...
do outdoor-rated zigbee smart plugs not exist? only one i've found is Embrighten and their amazon page is confusing but pretty sure it's out of stock https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08429W9B5
Personalized lighting is at your fingertips with the Enbrighten Zigbee Dual-Outlet Plug-in Smart Dimmer. Enjoy extensive control of floor and table lamps, fans, and other fixtures when paired with a compatible gateway. For further convenience, the smart dimmer connects directly to the latest Alex...
or alternately how dangerous is it to use an indoor-rated one outdoors? it would be under cover so no direct rainfall but it can get as cold as -10 C
#1284966353798697001 has a recommendations tag and can help
there are tons of google results for people looking for the same thing - pretty sure it doesn't exist
Not sure how much your searched but there's more than just embrighten : https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/supported-devices/#s=outdoor
Must say. Not a fan of the new channel styles. So much harder to find stuff
Also a load less engaging I feel like
thanks hadn't seen this database
looks like LEDVANCE is the other option
wonder if they're available in canada with north american plugs
definitely seems like an underserved market regardless
I thought the community died when I came in here. Is there another channel that just talks about HA and General Support?
Also the water cooler sounds like I'm at work or something in my house which feels icky.
There's another one here too: https://zigbee.blakadder.com/search.html
No, because there is no "general support". You have very specific support problems, and several channels where you can chat about non-support topics.
Every channel has a description for what it is. And several of the people who help in this server will tell you they enjoy the changes. 🙂
Ok well where do people generally talk day to day about HA as it doesn't seem like this is the channel. I've never seen moments go by where nothing is being said about something. So I am a little shell shocked.
Depends on what you are talking about. Here's where less than 12 hours ago Sonoma asked about a recommendation.
Should he have gone into #the-workshop? Yes! That's where hardware side chats are.
Audio/video convos? They often happen in #the-media-bar. #home-and-garden is where people talk about wider home projects.
There is a space for everything. The biggest change is that it's not in one single channel.
I guess the separation makes it look less active
the important part is that you get what you want out of it, not necessarily how it looks
There isn't a space to just chat about problems though. 😄
Those always go in support channels
that's true, on purpose
I can tell you on purely number comparisons (not channel chats) the total number of messages has not dropped at all in here.
Intentionally. If you have a support question, post it in the right space. A "problem" is a support issue.
Yeah, like I said, I know.
But it's false to say that there's a space for everything.
It ain't coming back, dunno what to tell y'all.
Because that is one facet that was entirely axed from before.
Please let me know what is missing for you.
A place to idly chat about things that I might have problems with. 😄
I'm being annoying on purpose, sorry.
They are forum channels.
You are way more likely to get individualized help in a forum channel than posting in here and watching chat move by.
Some people might just flood the channel with raccoon pics
You are asking a very obtuse question that has no answer unless there is a specific scenario.
Other times I might just inquire about something, see if someone happens to have had a similar situation, and chat about it a bit.
What is your scenario?
make your own "channel" for that by posting somethign in the appropriate channel
I have posted several threads in the hardware thing and am patiently waiting for replies to roll in
would my question have been on-topic in the workshop?
It would have, yes! You can always delete and post in the chat itself - as long as you aren't crossposting it's fine to move a convo. 🙂
Lets say I've been toying around with something, and it gave me a bit of issues. So I'll mention these issues, just to chat/vent a bit, since I'm not at a point where I want to write a whole support thread. I could do that before. Now I'll be pointed to a support channel.
No, you'd go to #the-workshop.
The tinkerer's workshop!
Do you have a dedicated room or shed specifically to tinker with hardware in? Fan of protocols, how they work, and want to talk without things being support focused? Chat with your fellow hardware enthusiasts here! Commiserate over your struggles or celebrate your victories over technology here.
Every channel has a description for its use.
also "write a whole support thread" is a bit of a strawman
I get what he is saying though.
whatever you plan to post can be a post
That's a bit ableist, sorry.
There is quite a difference in the mental load and impact of those things.
I think the issue with the-workshop is it is specifying "hardware"
protocols
Yeah, that's the first thing I noticed as well.
Fan of protocols
Sorry, I didn't intend to start a whole thing, I know there's been friction already. I'll stop now.
Y'all's point is "there is nowhere to chat". There are.
I just didn't like the message that suggest you can do anything you could before, when that isn't really the case.
I think the-workshop is a good title and a place to chat for what he is describing minus it specifing that it is for hardware
you say that after stating "specifically hardware"
This is the description of the workshop.
I am very confused on what you are talking about. Are you taking something else I said literally?
"Do you have a dedicated room or shed specifically to tinker with hardware in?"
I thought this was stating that the discord channel was was the room in this thought experiment.
I don't have a dedicated room as it is my whole house. I'm not a fan of protocols.
That’s a bit too literal.
Chat with your fellow "hardware enthusiasts here"
I'm not sure how many more times it can specify this room is for hardware and for me to not think it is not for anything else but hardware discussion.
I feel like I would discuss HAM radio there.
Eh, maybe. But if you look at a lot of the past chats there, it does skew outside of just “hardware”.
the workshop channel is for people who are hardcore enough to have a room in their house for tinkering with hardware
lol or people who are just into everything.
solders some wires to @real frigate
I mean… @lone dagger is a cyborg. I’m just a twisted daemon.
The hardware shed is what it’s specific for. Do you have a shed that is dedicated to hardware at home, is what that says.
if you just want to generally spitball talk about coding things is this also the place?
Depends on if there is a community channel that works well, or if it gets into deep troubleshooting some will redirect to support channels.
or about dockers, containers, vms, etc?
Installation is where things would be redirected if there was a long convo about it.
But I’ve seen people talk about it here.
is there a workshop for coders chat?
I mean, what’s so wrong with being pointed in the right space?
The developers category??
Kinda depends on what you're using those things for. If you're using contains, VMs, "dockers" for HA, that's #1284966540617449515
(I'm not trying to be obtuse, just trying to understand this layout so thank you for your assistance)
if for Frigate, #1284966353798697001 -> Frigate. If for Z2M, #1284966617670881350 -> Zigbee
More like scripting and coding your own custom things for fun and letting people poke at them with random comments
it's not rocket science guys
find somewhere to post, yes, you might have to spend a moment finding where to post. Sorry.
Is it rocket surgery though?
Is it a active rocket?
|| saw that the power is in watts, not kW ||
Hopefully not in here 😭😉
Do you want to see his active rocket?
Not at all, this is the raccoon shit posting channel
No that is lost glory
They make a pill for that
