yeah dimming wont work with Neutral im pretty sure you need to dim the live

dimming switch I guess just changes the amount of volts/amps/w/e it gives it unless it just acts on some circuit as a potentiometer, but that circuit likely does the same thing anyway

I usually work with DC, but even in AC with its kooky reversing I'm pretty sure you'd need to dim on live not neutral

You need the light to draw at least 20W, which it probably doesnt, so you'll need a shelly bypass

The most genius feature of our house when we moved in was someone had mis-wired one of the 2-way light switches, so there was a switch that in one position turned on one of the outside lights on the house, and in the other position turned on the path lights 😄

I think the one annoying thing here is that all the switches have the side screws, but then also use the wire holes in the back of the switches for wiring. Whoever wired this house left all the side screws for every switch all the way out, so there's nice unshielded metal plates sticking out all over, and some of the switch boxes are split between multiple circuits

(leaving the screws out violates code here, but I bet it's the same for the whole neighborhood)

How long would you consider "reasonable" for a restore of a backup? 1.1gb backup restore on an i3 NUC into a VM with 8gb RAM, been going for close to an hour now.

I need some ideas. I'm trying to affix this LED strip under the kitchen cabinets but it's sagging because it's heavy. I'm out of those little metal brackets, and double sided tape won't stick to the back of the strip (it's got this silicone thingy that's really slick). I can't drill into the bottom of the cabinets. I'm trying to use regular clear tape but it isn't working either. I tired super glue and it doesn't adhere to the silicone.

You can also try Museum Putty, I use that in my RV and it holds like crazy and is easily removable and leaves no residue or marks

Both the silicone and the Museum Putty will be at most hardware stores if there is one nearby. 3D prints are good, but you can't just use any plastic, you need to make sure it can hold up and not deform from the weight

I think ping + automation is the way to go. I do that, and if it goes off line toggle the power on and off via zigbee plug, and the machine is set to start on power failure.

So, the full story of how I found out things were way bad was before the anniversary stream last week I accidentally unplugged my gateway while setting up something else. I didn't notice that when I plugged it back in the 2.4 band never came back up - so all my lights were hella broke.

2 days later and I am trying to run our robovac who...has no connection. So I had to do some troubleshooting.

When all my lights tried to connect as the gateway booted back up, it uh...didn't like that and fell over instead.

hahaha you haven’t been in MY MINI. 🙂 But… also, drafting comes into play when doing really twisty roads when there’s almost no visibility around a tight corner (mostly in mountain settings). So, if you’re not right up on the Mini in front of you and you lose sight of them and they have to stop quickly, much higher chance of a rear end collision.

We’ve kinda solved that with some drivers that are scared of that by using radios, but that still relies on the driver being fast enough to toggle the radio and speak.

the channel names excluding any description for them is a basic general path.. for most cases whatever issue a person has will somewhat ring a bell with those basic channel names regardless how complex the issue may be, the descriptions just better fine tune it but they are not a end all be all

If you're not set on it being WiFi (because WiFi is pretty much the worst choice for everything), I'd recommend looking at Zigbee switches/buttons. As a bonus, you can run them on batteries almost forever. I'm a big fan of the Aqara buttons. I have no experience with WiFi switches/buttons to make recommendations there.

i don't think anyone makes a reasonable wifi battery powered smart switch, simply because there's no way to get good battery life. Many wired switches support a "smart bulb" mode where they always pass power through, and the switch just provides events to home assistant - that might work for you?

Sounds like you may be best positioned for HA OS (either bare metal or a VM). The alternative would be the container install, but if you don't currently (or plan to) manage containers, that route probably doesn't make as much sense. As a new user, don't consider the remaining 2 options (Core or Supervised)
