Hi, where are channels I could actually ask questions regarding HA? In support category all seems to be read-only

Thanks. See, I'm more used to direct conversation on discord and never did it before. Here I mean 🙂

so you aren't running intelliflo? is the thing that ties it into homeassistant the intelliflo pump, or is it just the easy touch 8 panel?

My recommendation: IntelliFlo3® VSF Top of the line (variable speed and flow). IntelliFlo VS Good all around (variable speed). I removed all control panels. Running a Pi at the pool equipment, 100x better.

Yes the UI looks janky but why would you look at it once it's integrated to HA 🙂

Does anybody faced issues with the last update (core 2024.9.1 --> 2024.9.2) ? All my switches did show strange behavior - the state did toggle for 1 -2 sec then goes back to the old state. The real device did change correctly, only the state in the dashboard was wrong. State changes via the real hardware were not reported in the the GUI . Restoring the 20.24.9.1 backup fixed it. Before reporting an issue I want ask here.

i have to say, i'm pretty disappointed by the change in the discord server. i'm sure there are reasons, but i wouldn't know where to look for them in this new discord setup. i see where to go find stuff now, but i feel it is a setback. i loved the open forum of the old channels where we could just share information about the topic. i learned so much by just jumping into the channel of choice and reading what i've missed, or even scrolling back a few days. now it is just posts. as if i'm on a BBS from the early 90's

#

for instance, i wanted to just go put some random information into the zwave channel about a seemingly popular device (aeotec window/door sensor 7) that i just discovered (the battery information is different between the website support page and the user manual), but i don't think it will be useful to create a post for it. i don't need support. just wanting to share some useful information

static schooner
#

I think the aversion to writing a post because 'it's not worth it' or 'it's not useful' is just a mindset that needs to be overcome

forest edge
#

eh..

static schooner
#

The alternative is a single post that just immediately scrolls off the screen, forgotten

forest edge
#

as he said, some scroll back

drifting adder
#

but... easily searched for and then you can read the context around

static schooner
#

That all fits in a post 🤷

mortal walrus
#

for topic-specific channels with moderately low traffic, i did pretty regularly scroll back to read what i'd missed

forest edge
#

this server needs both but I agree with actual support being placed into the forum type channels

mortal walrus
#

like, half of what i know about matter and can now support people with came from just reading in the matter channel as conversation happened

forest edge
#

asking for assistant in a forum type channel makes 100% sense, but just talking and throwing out random facts or whatever.. that can reside in a normal chat channel

drifting adder
#

at the same time, i can see how it might be overwhelming for those mods

#

everyone rolling in and taggin them (like me)

mortal walrus
#

dang, vertical video makes for tall link previews, that fills my whole screen height :(

drifting adder
#

lol. a post would have saved you from that 😛

#

but i would have missed it, as it was something i wouldn't have clicked on to jump into the thread to view. shrugs

#

anyway. just venting. i suppose i'll get used to it like my jump from IRC. i had better shut up before i see someone say "get off my lawn" like i did the other night

mortal walrus
#

I'm still hoping that at some point we'll get some "on topic" chat channels again, but ... :/

forest edge
#

this is all a ploy to drive people away from discord so they can just focus on the forums /s

drifting adder
#

i think i like the idea @forest edge mnetioned. it would be good to have a support channel and general chat channel for each. HA has some many different topics, though. it might have been better to have both for at least a trial period and direct people to asking for specific support in the forum-like posts rather than just locking the general chats

drifting adder
#

waits for the "okay boomer"

mortal walrus
#

i certainly see fewer people, in part because i end up skipping a bunch of forum topics because they don't seem sufficiently interesting to be worth the effort of dealing with the discord forum topic ui - even tho they might be something that i would have read in a chat channel :/

forest edge
mortal walrus
#

kinda wish discord would show the end of the chat rather than the start so you could get some idea of the current discussion before opening a forum topic.

#

there seems to be a lot of overlap between #1284966353798697001 and #1284966617670881350 fwiw; hardware is listed first, so it ends up grabbing some of the topics related to support of e.g. zigbee, zwave, matter devices.

drifting adder
#

i say that because i hadn't been in here in a bit. maybe a couple of months. and then smacked with it. shrugs

forest edge
#

POD's, TOD's make sure you peeps in the US have those things added to anything of yours of value. shit is such a nightmare to add down the road and in some cases a nightmare to deal with in general

drifting adder
#

true that. don't want to have to let the courts decide

mortal walrus
#

but yeah, i'm not a fan of using a chat service as a searchable knowledge base in general - that's not what chat is for. And there's better options for forums than locking stuff into a non-web-indexed, no anonymous access, proprietary service like discord. The whole reason i joined the HA discord - a chat service - was to chat with other people who use HA about HA and related technologies :/ Not to talk about random unrelated stuff, and not to act as a support service agent.

forest edge
#

you can chat about HA, just not ask for help about HA in these channels lol

mortal walrus
#

most of the "community" channels explicitly say in the description (hmm, not sure what gave me that impression, doesn't seem to actually be the case currently?) that they're off-topic channels, and are used as such (so i have them muted).

forest edge
#

they just don't want these channels to be used for any kind of support when it comes to HA

#

the old OT was the same way

#

the old support chat channels weren't really meant to be used for general conversation that kept jumping from support to casual chat either

#

the issue here isn't what they want. it's the discord sucks for what they are trying to achieve

#

if threads weren't basically useless those would get used more too

mortal walrus
#

i'm honestly ok with getting repeated questions in support chat channels occasionally - they're usually quick to answer, and if they start happening too often it's a good indication of a shortcoming of the software or public support/documentation resources.

#

also provides a way for people newer to a project to start helping others, by answering questions that they've seen before :)

forest edge
#

I agree the other way had it's perks but it did kind of have it's downsides too

#

can't even suggest an unofficial server because the valuable information in that wouldn't ever be seen by those looking for answers lol

mortal walrus
#

honestly, the old channel layout helped me get interested in matter/thread by seeing the active conversation in those channels. so i picked up some devices, dove deep into learning protocol details while chatting with an integration dev, and eventually helped speed up the resolution of a device firmware issue that was affecting HA users by providing the vendor with reproduction steps using a standalone test tool.

proper blaze

#

I may have to stop using the voice assistant. This is absolutely mental. It picks up something that sounds nothing like the wakeword, picks up a random sentence from a video and then decides it's going to perform a seemingly arbitrary list of actions. What is even happening here?

quick hedge
#

The wakeword works, but is VERY picky so maybe it just doesn't like your voice, accent, etc. It worked if I held it up to my mouth most of the time, rarely when anywhere else. The speaker in it is bad enough that it's hard to understand the response a lot of the time.

#

I've had the best luck with Wyoming and R-Pis but as you can see above, it's... often just crazy.

The only bad thing is that it doesn’t have a HA integration, but I can just schedule it and not worry about it at all.

static schooner
#

I installed the Roborock integration, but I haven't decided what I want to do with it yet. I've scheduled cleaning, and I guess it would be nice if it alerted me if it gets in trouble, but their app already does that

and there's nothing that HA can do about it

real frigate

Exactly. I have mine flashed with Valetudo and integrated through MQTT. It’s great and all because I can schedule cleanings when I’m out of the house or in bed… but honestly, I really can’t say that I ever do anything with the vacuum in HA itself. It cleans, returns to it’s dock and then sits there for the rest of the day. lol

candid viper
#

Okay,. so this might not be a HA issue but why is everything so coy about giving debug information that might actually be useful?

I set something up and it errors (returning a 404) but the debug information doesn't even include the URI it requested.. so I have no idea what it didn't find.

solar zealot

I think Xyem was just ranting.

I turned on the debug information and got no more useful information than what the assist responds with in the first place.

But yes, just ranting 🙂

vestal sleet

And then get an idea of what certain things uses, what isn't being tracked, etc.

Though personally, I would have just made the main OpenAI one accept endpoint URLs so it could be used with any OpenAI compatible API but.. apparently that's just me 😄

I got some debug information out of the backend openai module being used (for the record, by installing something from HACS that allows me to set the environment variable OPENAI_LOG to debug) and the debug information from that.. makes it look like it is not actually using the URI I set, as the port is missing.

#

Which would explain why it is getting a 404 🙂

livid widget
#

@candid viper What you can also do, is run a reverse proxy (ie, put the local openai stuff behind something like nginx), log it... And then tell your HA to hit it.

hollow glacier
candid viper

I can see in the documentation for that module of examples with other ports being used, so I have a feeling this debug output isn't being fully honest about what it is doing.

Can someone direct me pls? I have an idea for an app I want to build on top of home assistant, but I'm not sure what the right way to "package" this would be (add-on, integration, completely separate)

I want to build a score keeping app for ping pong where users can press a zigbee button on each side of the table to regsiter a point, then have a wall-mounted display that shows the score and some other information like who's turn it is

#

I think I can just build this as a completely separate nodejs app that webhooks into HA to get button press state, but it would be cool if I could do this in a such a way that the data is stored somewhere in HA

How bad of an idea would you say is it to Magnet mount an access point

fathom sparrow
#

magnet mount it closed?

#

as long as it has the ability to disengage automatically like the real magnet mount systems, then it's fine

#

the magnets don't work when the power goes out, so you can leave. They are connected to a fire system, so you can leave

#

if it doesn't have those capabilities, I think it's a bad idea

solar zealot

ChillBar_noted do I need to check with local authorities if I can have a pipeline installed for the fire system

they all had multiple ways the door would disengage the magnet

I'm relatively new to HA, I've got it all active in my home (running in a VM on a QNap), but the light switches I bought are Zemismart ones, and they can't be controlled individually. The 3 gang ones all switch at once if I try to toggle one output.
How do I go about debugging this and working out how to create a custom handler? I can't find anything about this online...

fathom sparrow
#

what do you mean custom handler?

#

You want to integrate this into HA?

#

if yes, you need to reverse engineer the API if someone hasn't done that already. And chances are, it may not be possible

tiny wigeon
#

Yes, I'd like it to work the same as any other supported switch 🙂

#

It's recognised as a TS0013, but obviously has something different

fathom sparrow
#

This is a TUYA product?

tiny wigeon
#

It sends all the correct events to HA, and it's just the activation codes from HA to the switch that are somehow wrong

I'm not sure how or why it's seen as a TS0013

It's just not shown on the site

If that doesn't work properly with the ZHA integration, you can attempt to create a quirk. I've never done that but you should create a topic in #1284966617670881350 and tag it zigbee

otherwise you can switch to Z2M and see if it works by looking in their device catalog

That only works if your garage door supports it

you can do that with chaimberlain group garage door openers only if you solder to the leads of the button

chaimberland group owns

Chamberlain — the company's do-it-yourself line of garage door openers.
LiftMaster — the company's line of garage door openers for professional installers.
Raynor — the company's line of garage door openers for professional installers. This line of professional installers is slightly less common than LiftMaster.
Craftsman — re-branded Chamberlain models sold at Sears. Those products have a "139" model prefix to denote that the Chamberlain Group made them for Sears.
Clicker — a line of universal garage door remotes.
summer depot
#

I'm ignorant 'splain it . Every garage door I've ever had used screw terminals to connect a dry switch on the motor unit

fathom sparrow
#

Garage door openers now, you cannot use the leads because anyone can splice the line and touch the wires, oepening your garage door

#

so all 'signals' over the line are encrypted with a code sent from the opener to the button and vice versa

#

i.e. you can't just plug in a relay

tidal bronze
#

Yep

fathom sparrow
#

and chaimberland group has a strangle hold on the industry by owning most of the companies that produce them, so they force you to use a cloud based app called myQ that does not play nice with 3rd parties

#

and it's limited in functionality

tidal bronze
#

You can always solder direct to PCB Momentary Tactile Push Button legs.

summer depot
fathom sparrow
#

Yep, that's what I did in the past, now I just use ratgdo because it offers open/close states instead of using a separate tilt sensor

fathom sparrow
#

keypads, push buttons, everything now is an encrypted signal, so no matter where you put it, it can't open your garage if you splice the wires

tidal bronze
#

As long as you go direct to button you are good.

fathom sparrow
#

which you can't do on the keypads outside your garage

#

so, it's all keypads fault

#

if you have an old garage door, ~15+ years old, you'll probably be fine

tidal bronze
#

Got rid of keypads sometime ago. Ugly

summer depot
#

Don't have any key pads. Just hard-wired switch near the door from house to the garage . Our phones are the keypad. Opener is 5 years old . Some kind of Linear.

fathom sparrow
#

I was thinking of adding one, I left my house this summer, accidentally locked the door and didn't have my phone on me

fathom sparrow

Aladdin Genie series

summer depot
#

Linear is the brand don't know the model

fathom sparrow
#

well, ya got lucky with your brand

#

everywhere around where I live is Liftmaster

summer depot
#

So reading between thew lines are you saying that those openers that you referenced only have RF based control. No hard wired buttons?

fathom sparrow
#

No, they have hardwired buttons

#

but the communication over the hard wire is encrypted

tidal bronze
#

The lift master 2 conductor now carries, temp, motion sensor and button trigger.

summer depot
#

ahhh not just a dry contact but some kind of over the wire protocol

tidal bronze
#

Yep. So you can't use the wire as a NO contact

summer depot
#

that sucks but I see why if people had outdoor keypads

tidal bronze
#

Battery powered keypads are RF bound.

#

Sucks, no. Just solder direct to inside button and good to go. No matter what comms they use you interact with a mechanical switch.

summer depot
#

Then hook up a Z-Wave or Zigbee remote dry contact switch to the switch button contacts ... not difficult.

fathom sparrow
#

Yah, I soldered to one of the RF remotes, I soldered to the hardwire one at one point. But the ratgdo has been the best bang for the buck so far. Don't even need an extra button/remote

#

The benefit to the ratgdo, is that it costs the same as a zwave or zigbee remote, but it also talks to the garage door opener

#

so it provides open/close info, light info, sensor interruption info, and lets you open, close, and stop the garage door

#

and the wiring is almost the same as a relay

summer depot
#

Looks like the ratgdo revere engineered the protocol

fathom sparrow
#

Yep

#

it's a dude out of upstate NY that reverse engineered it and put it on an ESP32

tidal bronze
#

ratgdo looks nice.

fathom sparrow

now he sells it for $30

I'm not sure that guy hacked it himself

they've used the same signal encryption for the last 15ish years

# tender prism Hi! You lost? (Also Sir GoodEnough...)

I love how it's surprising that I'm here, I'm pretty sure I was here before I was on the forums and I've been serving and administering Discord servers since Discord first released, lol. I chose not to actively participate here because I find support systems on Discord tend to be chaotic and messy until threading came along. Obviously it has changed so I'm kicking the tires.

I bet there's an entire swath of people that are upset that Padwan and Jedi went away. I have no idea what drove the new rank of "Crow" but whatever it was, someone is mad lol

iron granite
#

That wasn't the case, tbh.
More the transition of the support channels from a chat to a forum-like experience.

azure rock
#

That's a total transformation of Discord in a very major way, so it's very understandable that it would upset folks

#

I'm loving it now, honestly, where I was neutral to "could care less" before

iron granite
#

We got some feedback, that the new structure led to fewer questions being left unanswered. They get more attention than a short mention in a stream of chat messages.

azure rock
#

And that's exactly why this is far better. It's also why I mentioned that Discord was never good for support, especially when you have as large of a user base as this, and that's the main reason: questions get lost in the stack

#

Chat is Discord's DNA, I don't think they figured it would become such a globally used platform when it was first written to replace Vent as a way to talk to friends while gaming or co-opping on something

mortal walrus
#

Right - that "chat" vs "support" thing is where people like me are annoyed with the new layout - it's better for support, sure, but in exchange we've lost some spaces that had grown a bit of a chat community around particular aspects of HA or related technologies.

#

i'm here to hang out with folks using ha, talk about some of the tech stuff, and sometimes help people out; not to go through support tickets :)

azure rock

Fortunately you still have a handful of chat channels to use, best of both worlds

Would love to get some ideas. Although no Goog love for Amazon. A delivery person wearing a blue shirt with a blue and white logo is placing two packages on a doormat. Wild, I found that setting in the shelly app. Still buzzing. I'm unsure if I'll be able to hear it when the housing is up in the attic, but perhaps it's better to just return this one. Is there a way to uncover all these setting in HA? @forest edge and @civic rivet i figured out the issue. (And clearly did not go to sleep) Using a dumb dimmer with a slider isn't supported with the shelly dimmer 2. You need a "3 position retractive" to toggle the light and hold for dimming. Interestingly wiriing the dumb dimmer to sw1 and N (instead of sw1/L) will make it so the toggle works but alas, the dimming slider does nothing

#

I'm still trying to figure out the stipulation about minimum voltage draw in non-neutral installs.

#

This light only draws 5w, so even hooked up to a pair of them i guess i would need some bypass device?
