My last car drowned and I was given an extended cab F-150, this thing is ridiculously pointlessly huge.

forest edge
weak musk
#

I'm saying, just because something used to be popular or good doesn't mean it always will be. Take something, I assume familiar to you, like horse drawn carriages: once popular now not.

prisma briar
forest edge
forest edge
weak musk
#

or even currently in non-american parts of the world.

#

The obsession with trucks in the US makes next to no sense.

prisma briar
#

My dad had a much more reasonably sized 90s Ford Explorer that towed a pop-up camper just fine

forest edge
#

for town lincoln boat with v8 pulling a large camper trailer was always something to see

#

pop up camper has no weight

#

the prius could have pulled that

prisma briar
#

It was like 3500lbs fully loaded

#

The 30 ft trailer was like 12,000

weak musk
#

I think a lot of modern cars can tow just fine. It's the stopping that's the issue.

forest edge
prisma briar
forest edge
#

you gonna toss a bucket full of dirt in your back seat of your honda?

prisma briar
#

I moved all kinds of crap in my Altima

forest edge
#

i'd like to see you haul dirt in your car lol

prisma briar
#

I moved bags of dirt in it

forest edge
#

lol no bags.. raw dirt

weak musk
prisma briar
#

I don't live a live that leads me to need to move raw dirt.

static schooner
weak musk
#

90% of people don't use trucks the way you're describing Sonoma.

#

and in other parts of the world the trucks are significantly smaller and more useful

forest edge
prisma briar
#

I don't really know car mechanics

static schooner
#

don't you just need it to connect to the tongue?

forest edge
#

here suv's is the thing you should complain about. not trucks

forest edge
#

suv's here has replaced cars

static schooner
#

truck stops or slows down, cylinder compresses, applies brakes

prisma briar
static schooner
#

I was just imagining an electronics-less hydraulic system

forest edge
#

i missed what trailer you are talking about

#

you saying a pop up had it's own brakes?

tidal bronze
#

Hmmm

prisma briar
#

Yea, both the pop-up and 30ft campers my dad had had their own brakes

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

Sorry no. We don't do that stuff here

forest edge
prisma briar
#

idk why, I just remember having to calibrate their strength

#

because that stupid knob would get knocked and they'd go full brake

forest edge
#

brakes for trailers are required after the trailer itself hits a certian weight. anything light dosen't need them and is a complete waste

tidal bronze
#

Trailers..... huh

weak musk
#

Still takes strain off the vehicle regardless if it's needed....

forest edge
forest edge
#

electric brakes on a trailer don't work the same as you putting your foot on the pedal

tidal bronze
forest edge
tidal bronze
forest edge
weak musk
ocean oar
#

Totally does, usually looks a bit like this:

forest edge
#

camper, enclosed trailers and big car haulers about the only trailers you'll find brakes on. everything else you won't

ocean oar
#

Weight of the trailer pushes the piston in the hitch toward the vehicle, which applies the brakes on the trailer

forest edge
#

those are diffrent

tidal bronze
#

Guess the cookie is talking about GTS

weak musk
forest edge
#

thats an emergency brake, much like how parking brakes work

#

ah

#

well his 30ft should have had electric brakes on it

weak musk
#

and work in motion

forest edge
#

those that you listed, don't get plugged into the vehicle

#

they work by a cable being pulled when the trailer disconnects

weak musk
#

negative

prisma briar
#

Those are the emergency brakes for if it becomes disconnected

forest edge
#

not negative

weak musk
forest edge
#

that picture you posted showed it lol

#

well whatever

prisma briar
#

There is a pull cord but that photo is not it

forest edge
#

diffrent mechanisim but they are not all like that

prisma briar
#

It's a steel cable on mine that gets attached to the vehicle and if the tongue pops off it'll drag on that and pull the trailer to a stop.

forest edge
#

but your 30ft camper had eletric brakes too right?

prisma briar
#

Yea

#

It was my dad's, I only ever moved the 30ft one once, but it's got brakes. He had the transmission gearing changed to pull it better too

forest edge
#

the term "trailer brakes" should be used for the standard electric braking system. that other thing is just emergency brakes

prisma briar
#

I believe that's a hydraulic piston that gets pushed in and applies pressure like a brake pedal. It's between the car and the trailer so when you stop it gets pushed in automatically and can drive the brakes.

prisma briar
#

I've never seen one but the idea seems intuitive

weak musk
#

it also has the emergency "trailer detached" braking

weak musk
forest edge
#

not something that operates the brakes normal during braking

forest edge
#

ah it's a fairly new thing

#

wonder how reliable that is over time

#

max rating up to 7700lbs.. must been made for people who want to tow smaller trailers with thier leaf lol

#

joking. 7700lbs not some small thing lol

weak musk
#

Yeah

#

I think uhaul uses the surge braking in their car transport trailers

forest edge
#

probably

#

for commercial it would be a wise investment

#

even on smaller trailers they rent

weak musk
#

yeah

ocean oar
#

Stops people doing dumb shit anyway 😄

forest edge
#

actually about to buy a new trailer.. funny this convo came up

ocean oar
#

Ha, I do actually have a picture, of when we had to chuck one of my father's cars on a trailer.
But can only just see the reservoir:

#

Also just fwiw when you say "fairly new thing", I took this picture in 2007

#

Towing giant oversized things has never really been a thing here due to ridiculously narrow roads, so electric brakes are the anomaly, not mechanical ones

forest edge
#

2007 is fairly new to me lol

#

that trailer looks to only have two boards for the wheels and open everywhere else. nerve racking loading up that car lol

ocean oar
#

Well also we were using a hatchback as "ballast" on the hitch, and it ended up a foot in the air 😄

#

Probably more nerve-wracking when I tell you it's a Lotus Esprit

#

Not the cheapest car in the world

forest edge
#

they still make those kinds of trailers. it robs it's uses for other things imo

tidal bronze
#

What a beautiful day!

forest edge

not without the center support. i just noticed that trailer only has the a frame and not the beam in the center

even android baked in control for it

tidal bronze

I am good with it as long as they don't user the word "automation"

#

Extended remote control, yep, nothing else.

forest edge

well I think it can intergrate with HA

I thought I saw something about that

"Automation" must mean something not freaking touch control and app control.

I disagree there. touching a button to start a sequence of events is automation lol

how is touching a button diffrent from like a contact sensor?

forest edge

I don't have to pull out my phone or deal with tracking my phone or her phone or anything, it's a 100% working solution

#

the button is no diffrent than the contact sensor.. it's a trigger

tidal bronze
#

As for me if I open HA for any reason in my day to day. I have failed.

forest edge
#

you also buy more crap than anyone else here and are constantly swapping stuff out so obviously you haven't worked out the bugs yet lol

tidal bronze

It's an experiment for sure. I will never disagree there. But screen, app or button press, oh boy I have failed miserably

I would advise for multiple networks. Specially at least 2 x 2.4GHz only networks for all the stattionry iot devices.

prisma briar
#

Each twisted pair inside a cat cable carries the positive and negative version of a signal, any interference will apply to both equally, then they can be combined on the receiving end to rebuild the signal without any noise. That's differential/balanced signaling.

Modern PoE injectors crank up the voltage/current carrying the signal to the point that it can be used as a source to power things, old ones just used unused lines in the wire for power.

solar zealot
#

i see i see

ocean oar
#

Put another way, normal Ethernet signalling voltage is -2V to +2V, when you're doing PoE you just have one pair that's doing 46V to 50V instead. Still 4V peak-to-peak, just with a big DC offset

#

(or two pairs, for the higher power version)

prisma briar
#

I thought they got the DC offset from running two pairs at a different voltage

ocean oar
#

One pair as ground, one +48V

prisma briar
#

Yea

ocean oar
#

Although again I guess it wouldn't matter if it was -24V/+24V

#

DC is weird

solar zealot
#

How does it figure out how much voltage is required

#

Or is this part of the connection handshake before data moves through it?

forest edge
#

well i put that ant infested reolink go pt out at my spring fed pond. curious see what critters I see

#

@last cedar maybe we'll see some of your family members get eaten

prisma briar
#

There's a passive standard that just sends power down the line but iirc it's limited to 100mbps connections. Most that you'll encounter send just enough power to negotiate until the receiving device requests more power.

Passive ones can blow devices if used wrong, active ones should be good.

#

You're unlikely to need a passive one for anything

ocean oar
#

@solar zealot Voltage is constant. Current is negotiated.
There are now 8 PoE classes; Original 802.3af has class1 (4W), class2 (8W), class3 (15.4W). 802.3at class4 (30W). 802.3bt class5 (45W), class6 (60W), class7 (75W), class8 (90W).
1-4 use a resistance-based detection handshake, 5-8 use LLDP to negotiate.
And in all cases there's allowance for 15% loss in the cable, so the power allowed to be consumed is 3.8/6.5/13/25.5/40/51/62/71W respectively.

prisma briar
#

There are 24v and 48v PoE standards.

#

Generally the adapter is one or the other

solar zealot
#

Interesting interesting

#

So it's a kinda 'buy the right stuff' compatibility

prisma briar
#

Your device will probably list something like 802.3af or 802.3at, that's basically the class qupada mentioned.

#

idk about bt but I've never seen an af or at injector that didn't do the full af/at spec.

You can get PoE extractors to power non-PoE devices over PoE, too

#

Basically regulators that give you a constant voltage and pass the data through

#

I had my ISP modem powered off of one of those before I switched ISPs

ocean oar
#

One of my colleagues is doing that with the ONT for their FTTH install, because the people who owned his house before him got it installed in a monumentally stupid location 😄

prisma briar
#

I had cut out a section of drywall and put an access panel over the hole, put a shelf inside, and had my ISP cable modem and a switch sitting in there.

#

But when I moved ISPs I moved where it was coming into the house so I pulled that panel and put the drywall back

ocean oar
#

ONT installed above the kitchen bench, for no particularly good reason:

prisma briar
#

lol

forest edge
prisma briar
#

With how they ran the fiber into my house I could easily get to the cable and move it anywhere I wanted.

#

It's just sorta sitting on the ground under my house

#

Assuming that's a hollow wall you could easily cut an access panel into it and put that stuff in the wall

ocean oar
#

But because 4-pair Ethernet cable costs less than 2-pair phone cable due to economy of scale, swapping the jacks is usually an option if your house is relatively new

forest edge
#

it would make no sense to install the fiber jack where there was no networking

#

although with that said, I have seen them do that in apartments

prisma briar
#

nothing about that makes much sense

forest edge
#

the fiber jack would be in the middle of the wall in a bedroom lol

prisma briar
#

My ONT is in my garage

ocean oar
#

You are forgetting though that the installers give remarkably few shits, and will install it on the inside of the closest exterior wall to the street

prisma briar
#

The first guy who came to install my fiber literally walked back to his truck and left when I told him where I wanted it ran.

#

Which was stupid, I'd already drilled all the holes for it.

forest edge
#

well here they have to hook everything up so doing an install like that would harder than if they routed outside around to where the networking is lol

#

our g fiber infrastructure is in the front between two houses. in order for them to hook mine up they will have to circle around 3 sides of my house outside lol

ocean oar
#

I got a bit lucky, the installer was perfectly happy to accommodate my oddball request.
My network rack is in the under-house crawl space (I bought an IP54 rated outdoor cabinet for it), and they were happy enough to put the ONT inside it for me.
Likewise, I'd drilled a hole in the cabinet and installed a compression gland, so all they had to do was run the cable and terminate it.
Probably helped that the conduit they were running the fibre through is about a metre away.
Handed them a 3U rack blanking plate and told them to screw the ONT onto it 😄

forest edge
#

as in open air under house?

ocean oar
#

It's enclosed, but far from sealed

prisma briar
#

They put an outdoor junction box on the side of my house that has a normal fiber connection on it and ran a pre-spliced 100' cable to my garage. Only about 50' was needed so I have a giant coil of it in my garage.

forest edge
#

ah basement-less houses here will have those. where they put the hot water tank, furnace etc

prisma briar
#

I'd be worried about mice and insects putting it under my house

forest edge
#

humidity would be my concern

ocean oar
#

Big steel box:

#

I'll probably jinx it saying this, but 3 years in and not a single spider has gotten inside

forest edge
#

is that a joice behind it held together by those tack plates? lol

ocean oar
#

35 years in an earthquake-prone area and the house hasn't fallen down, probably fine 🤷‍♂️

#

There is a 2nd one on the other side of the post

forest edge
#

it looks l notched so probably intentional

#

so you gotta crawl under there to reset your network? lol

ocean oar
#

Yes, but I've rebooted the ONT once in more than 3 years, and had to manually intervene in the switch, router or UPS exactly never

#

At this point I don't think I've opened it in more than 6 months

prisma briar
#

run a power switch for it inside

ocean oar
#

The ONT is now on one of the outlets the UPS can toggle independently... just waiting for the day that never seems to come when I might need to use that

dusky plank
#

linked article says:

As we described, you cannot normally fly a drone over people. An exception to this is if you fly with a privately built drone with a weight below 250 grams or a drone purchased on the market with a class identification label 0

#

so nothing for me to read

neon hawk
#

it has a camera on it

#

that changes everything

dusky plank
#

article says nothing about that

neon hawk
#

look up the rules for your country also - they can vary

dusky plank
#

there are no rules for camera drones below 250g

#

they are known as "toys" not drones

neon hawk
#

not when it has a camera

dusky plank
#

in your country maybe

neon hawk
#

where do u live Germany?

forest edge
#

lol 3rd world

dusky plank
#

as said, there is no such rule which forbids flying that toy over people

neon hawk
#

ok, good luck with that

dusky plank
#

there are privacy concerns because of the camera, but no rules

#

no luck needed, my friends fly self built drones for years and had no trouble

neon hawk
#

u built the neo then?

dusky plank
#

that's just critical people seeing "rules" for these drones

#

there are practically none, you are a KAREN

forest edge
#

the neo supports the fpv googles? wtf?

dusky plank
#

why tf everybody type google

forest edge
#

goggles

neon hawk
#

no i am a licenced pilot of many years experience pointing out flying around uninvolved people is dangerous and against the rules

dusky plank
#

yes, now let that be a lession for you

forest edge
#

least they made it backward compatiable with the controllers. something that urked me when looking these things up with dji

dusky plank
#

oh they are not compatible, only the O4 controllers are

#

so you can buy a mini 4k which got released a few months earlier and can't use any of that gear

forest edge
#

wtf

#

go and think maybe they did something cool just find out.. nope

dusky plank

Lost a tire sidewall, now 4 new tires. Sucks. Never seen TPMS readings zero out that quick. 🤣 Me like run flats

rapid osprey
#

You still have your blue ridge mini splits in home assistant?

cunning onyx
#

I sure do

tidal bronze
#

Run flats won't do that. Something metal must have hit the 3mm, gaping hole. Wife was driving on the freeway and said "hey tire pressure says zero" 🙂 I said let's go home and check 🙂

just wrap a new rubber band around the rim and you'll be good to go

static schooner
#

fortunately, you can keep some spares in the glovebox

tidal bronze
#

All those tok ads for battery powered compressors, such a waste. We got rubber bands

#

@static schooner hot enough?

static schooner
#

frickin' ridiculous. I've had my AC running for like 3 months now

tidal bronze
#

Last day I guess.

static schooner
#

never had to do that since I moved here in 2007

#

If it's not the temp, it's the humidity keeping my windows closed. It was like 80F at 10:30 last night

tidal bronze

90 - 105 pretty crazy.

You got power cuts/loss too?

There are a lot of folks in the coastal region here that don't think they need AC. Those people are wrong

it has been shockingly nice here for being end aug/sept

Nice? Lmao!!!!

It's NEVER nice, sorry

Less shitty, yes. Nopes, never nice

calm down, don't get your blood pressure up lol

AC, no AC, AC, no AC, AC...

#

I think the solar production is down because it's so damn hot

forest edge
#

what temp do you try and keep your home at?

static schooner
#

80 upstairs unoccupied and 77 downstairs where I am

forest edge
#

oof you like it warm

static schooner
#

it's just the downstairs AC cycling

#

it's not so bad at 77 here in my office

forest edge
#

high humidity outside?

#

I would think low 80's outside with windows open would maintain those high 70 numbers

static schooner
#

59% now, same as inside. you might be right

oh yea that humidity is gross

I don't even look at my consumption this year. NEM bank should take care of it though

I usually count on accumulating over the summer, but that isn't happening this year. I don't think I'm going to like my true-up next May

Most months I just owe the $12 connect fee. I tend to collect a lot in the bank.

meanwhile in MO it's nice as hell

@tidal bronzelooks like something you should watch. https://youtu.be/OEXJmNj6SPk?si=yfa7bww_sawWLXSs

We put 7 Uber & Lyft drivers in one room and had them open their apps.

We found Uber paying different drivers different amounts for the same ride. Lyft too.

It’s proof corporations are using secret algorithms to pay workers less. And all of our jobs could be next.

More Perfect Union’s mission is to build power for working people. Here’s ...

I drove uber in 2015 for a couple months in between jobs, it was actually a pretty fun job

#

Saw a lot of odd characters

#

At the time there was a driver drought in my area so they were paying something like $22/hr guaranteed if you didn't get enough rides to make that rate that night.

forest edge
#

when I am ready to retire I thought about doing that but not for uber or lyft, we have a service here for the elderly which probably wouldn't irritate me as much as having to deal with young drunks

Be aware, my model had like "security USB ports" with little ridges so a normal usb wouldn't fit. I ended up just cutting that plastic off with some snips.

prisma briar
forest edge
#

that was precovid.. shit looks way diffrent out there now lol

prisma briar
#

The Midea A/Cs take the one on the right, you can open the sheath on a normal USB port and mod it to fit, that's what I did

cunning onyx
#

I basically did the same thing, but like, very very messy

prisma briar
#

I gently opened the metal part up at the seam on the back then it basically falls off and the plastic part can be accessed, then it can be gently bent back into place when done

static schooner
#

what kind of "security" is that?

cunning onyx
#

Same as all the other "security" bits

#

annoying, cost wasting, BS

prisma briar
#

They carry +5v and rx/tx serial, not USB. I think it's so you can't plug a normal USB device in that does who knows what.

static schooner
#

ah, so they're actually incompatible

#

still wires, but used differently

prisma briar
#

Probably lets them reuse almost all the USB tooling while being physically distinct

cunning onyx
#

on the plus side, been working great for years!

prisma briar
#

Mine have been solid too. I got the PCBs made at jlcpcb.

cunning onyx
#

I have so stopped thinking about them, they just run with the automation and controls I have and do exactly what I want. The ideal outcome really, especially for the complex setup I have.

I have a 15 pro max and I think I maybe use 20% of what it’s capable of. I will say that as a code editor on the run kind of device, it does REALLY well. But otherwise, yeah, I barely scratch the surface in terms of usage.
