#

I don't even trust wifi cameras anymore cause look how easy that shit was to jam now

prisma briar
#

They still need to be at your door for unlocking your door to be of any use

#

which could be done in 10 seconds with a bump key

#

If even that long

forest edge
#

well that depends on the lock

#

but you have two locks on the door

#

not just a deadbolt

prisma briar
#

I replaced my lower handle with one that only latches

forest edge
#

ah

#

well grade of deadbolt also matters

#

for kicking in strength

#

I've seen how easy lower grade deadbolts break

#

but 3 and higher are a little tougher

#

my barn door for example was kicked in once

prisma briar
#

if somebody was going to kick in my door they might as well just throw a rock through the 4'x4' ground level windows

forest edge
#

lol

#

well an opened door is slightly less obvious than a broken window

#

not as loud either to do

prisma briar
#

It's a normal Schlage deadbolt from what I could tell

#

With a mechanism bolted to it

forest edge
#

I would have one of those 4 point twist locks you see in movies but the woman would kill me

#

yea see i could never do that

prisma briar
#

I toyed with the idea of pairing a maglock with the state of the deadbolt for extra reinforcement

#

But decided that would have been potentially problematic if I ever lost access to my home network for some reason and the lock was down

forest edge
#

lol

#

some things just shouldn't be smart.. dumb still has it's place imo

#

when doors that open themselves and close become the standard then i'll switch cause of no choice but for now

prisma briar
#

Keeping things dumb because they need to be reliable is one thing but keeping a door lock dumb because of fear of hacks seems like it's ignoring the rather theatrical purpose these locks play to begin with.

forest edge
#

how many years have they exsisted?

prisma briar
#

pretty sure electric door locks are quite old, and even if they aren't the components in them are.

forest edge
#

locks like that mag lock you were talking about, sure

#

battery powered shit, not so much so

prisma briar
#

I'm fine trusting a 40 year old technology.

forest edge
#

why it take 40 years to catch on..

prisma briar
#

Also even if the mechanism breaks it's still a normal deadbolt that can be turned with a normal key

prisma briar
#

And i'd argue they still haven't taken off in residential because most people don't care

forest edge
ocean oar
#

Ones that look like this have been common enough here in NZ as long as I can remember

forest edge
#

I remember those being hacked too

#

hacked in the sense people would get through them

prisma briar
#

hotels have had electric keycarded doors since before I was born

forest edge
#

those are still not safe either

#

safe

prisma briar
#

lol, 99% of door locks in America are probably not worth the metal they're casted from.

forest edge
#

well these days they are likely chinesium

#

when its been around for another decade or two i'll consider them

prisma briar
#

these things were everywhere 20+ years ago when I was a kid

forest edge
#

the ones i saw looked more simple with a verticle row of like 5 or 6 push buttons

prisma briar
#

And similar styles

forest edge
#

yea

#

like that

prisma briar
#

I've seen those too, those are mechanical

winged obsidian
#

Meanwhile, have any of you upgraded the strike plates on your doors?

forest edge
#

i have

#

my shit is metal for the third of the door in the middle

#

even my storm door has twist locks on the bottom and top lol

prisma briar
#

I put some 8" screws into the plate on mine when I swapped the locks out

#

It was held in with like 1/4" screws when I got it

winged obsidian
#

prisma briar
#

I'm not sure I've ever locked my storm door, lol

forest edge
#

we mainly use the garage to enter and exit so the front door is always locked

prisma briar
winged obsidian
#

My side door is usually unlocked. Anyone can get in if they step around the dog shit.

#

I don’t have Great Danes anymore, so the poops aren’t as big as they used to be.

prisma briar
#

I never lock anything but my front door. There's no way into my back yard from the front and the rear of my back yard is an 8' tall fence on my side but about 15' above a steep hill on the other side.

#

A previous homeowner built a shed into the path between my house and the neighbors that should be there for back yard access

forest edge
#

sounds like a nightmare should you ever need to get equipment back there

prisma briar
#

Biggest thing I've moved back there is a 3 ton AC unit, it took two of us but we got it.

#

We put it on one of those automotive sleds for working on cars and wheeled it through my garage

forest edge
#

when i was a kid people use to leave thier doors unlocked. hell my parents left our front door unlocked except at night but these days I lock all the doors even when i am home

#

every exterior door i have is metal enforced and even the glass is strengthen lol

#

course some of that has to do with prices for that kind of stuff was cheaper back when i done it

#

back then 300k could get you a small mansion around here now a shit shack is 200k+

prisma briar
#

yea, house prices are stupid

#

I'm just glad I managed to get one before shameless investors bought them all up.

forest edge
#

I been seeing double couples looking at houses for sale, in fact a double couple just started renting one near me

#

must be how the newer generations moving into moving away from parents are able to afford to do so

prisma briar
#

I lived with 5 other people for a couple years to save up for my house

#

Easy to save up when your monthly bills are only $500.

#

If I hadn't of done that I'd still be renting and with current interest rates likely would be for some time still.

#

I got my house right before rates shot back up in 2022

#

Actually that's a lie, I would still have got a house it would have just been more rural.

#

It's disgusting how much I spent on rent that I'm never going to see again

forest edge
#

lol

#

last time I rented anything it was only 600 a month

prisma briar
#

It's slightly annoying how much nicer of a house I could have if I went to somewhere rural compared against how much I'm generally not fond of rural living.

prisma briar
forest edge
#

renting was nice too, included electric, water and even cable tv and internet was discounted lol

prisma briar
#

I've lived in apartments where internet was included but I never used it

forest edge
#

i lived on the third floor tho so f that

prisma briar
#

I always got my own connection

forest edge
#

I would have had to pay the repair costs of removing anything else

#

since the place was prewired for coax

prisma briar
#

the apartments I lived in provided centrally managed wifi

forest edge
#

although it wasn't like fiber was a thing then anyways

prisma briar
#

But also had coax drops in the units

forest edge
#

it even came with a panic button in the master bedroom

#

which I thought was odd

#

was this push button on a cable that came out of the wall

#

i wonder if that was some requirement by law or something

prisma briar
#

heh, I worked at a fast food place for a bit right out of school and one day somebody dropped a box while unloading a delivery and managed to catch the panic switch on the wall and rip it off/break it into multiple pieces. Had the local police show up with their guns drawn and demand to search the place.

forest edge
#

lol

#

i never pushed it to see what would happen

#

just know they called it a panic button when i moved in

Just normal third reality plugs

#

They're gas, so just normal 120v

forest edge

not seen a furnace hooked up via plug

#

usually they are on thier own dedicated circuit hard wired

static schooner
#

Mine are on their own circuits, just via outlet

forest edge
#

my issue is, this is an older gas furnace and I have read that start peak amps can reach around 20 amps

wouldn't be able to use a shelly

I need to put a meter on it tho to find out tho

I am immensely jealous of all these people that have furnaces that are so silent they need a sensor to tell them it’s on.

forest edge
#

this is a furace located at my moms i the workshop and it is anything but silent

#

but i can't hear it a mile away

#

confident a vibration sensor would trigger but what I wouldn't want is for shit like thunder to also trigger

#

ordered a zigbee clamp monitor from aliexpress.. i'm sure i'll see it sometime in 2027

prisma briar
#

Wire a voltage sensor up to the power-on contact on the furnace control board? When you see voltage between it and neutral it means the contact in the thermostat is closed and it's turned on.

#

For ensuring it's actually working i'd go with a thermostat

forest edge
#

I like the clamp route (assuming the reading is anywhere near accurate) because you can see if there is upward amount of draw over time to help determine is something should be looked at prior to failure

prisma briar
#

Yea but it wouldn't catch if the blower was on but the gas failed or something

#

mine still turns on the blower when turned on even if the pilot light is out

forest edge
#

Well the room has a temp sensor as well as gas detector so if the gas dosen't ignite and the furnace fills the room that will be detected already

#

I just want to know how often it kicks on, but a bonus benefit of logging the draw

#

this is just a gas heat furnce btw, no ac or anything

prisma briar
#

I have a clamp on mine, here's how it looks when I turn my blower on/off

#

Guessing the first took more current because it was the first time it'd been powered on in a few months

forest edge
#

yea thats the peak usage

#

then it settles out

#

what are you measuring that in?

prisma briar
#

watts

#

120v line voltage

forest edge
#

i'd convert it to amps

prisma briar
#

it's measured from the clamp in amps, this graph is that times the measured line voltage

#

but that's done in esphome and I don't think I have it sending amps to HA

I don't think he can even turn on half the lights in his house if the internet goes out

#

He kept calling me for help on it too and I haven't touched an Alexa thing since playing with their API in like 2017.

forest edge
#

surprise he even messes with that type of smart stuff

#

they make dumb smart stuff that work just as good and don't have to deal with any of that other crap

prisma briar
#

Yea, he could've got one of those outlets that has on/off pegs on it

#

or water valves

forest edge
#

yea they make mechanical alternatives to all that crap

prisma briar
#

he could've just hired someone to replace the float valve in his swamp cooler, too

#

he wanted me to do it but he has the swamp cooler mounted 15' off the ground and built a carport under it so idk how to even get to the thing.

and I'm not going to hang off his roof to do it

Hello, can someone help me pick the best Synology NAS, not interested in it being able to transcode since I have Jellyfin on a different Proxmox server with a dedicated GPU.

It should have more than 4 bays, at least 8GB of ram since I’ll run some LXCs and maybe a few VMs. I’m thinking about the DS1522+

But is there a better model?

Also is it true that the upgradeable RAM, NUC card, and and the SSD for caching is proprietary and i’m only limited to the options that synology sells?

Yes. Outdoor

I don't really pay attention to accuracy - I have 3: the new Tempest, the Weatherflow Air, and a cheap Oregon Scientific that connects to two other display units

Sorry for kicking in the door mid conversation, but does "accurate temperature" really matter as long as all devices show roughly the same? 🙂

ocean oar

The IoT requires the controller (SmartZone) system, and a whole-ass separate VM called "vRIoT" to control it.
Also it's clearly designed for specific uses, so most of the supported stuff is wireless door locks / lighting. Probably great if you run a hotel.

prisma briar

The Unleashed control software is a fork of the (old, and now discontinued) "ZoneDirector" series, designed to run on the APs

#

Licensing: Unleashed: Comes with a perpetual license for an unlimited number of users and includes all features. Controller: Requires a license based on the number of APs and user count, with different feature sets available at various price points.

assuming mixtral isn't lying I'm not paying a license for a controller

forest edge
#

z wave is too pricey for the license for companies to really throw that in on a whim

#

still surprise zigbee doesn't come on more consumer routers/ap's

prisma briar

My worry is that its hard coded to send data and initiate a connection. It has no open ports, so it might be impossible.

wraith pier

Hm. I can't comment from personal experience, but the few users I know are full of praise.

#

And at the rate they are squirting satellites to orbit, it's bound to improve all the time.

subtle pasture
#

I know three people who've tried Starlink. Only one kept it, and they only use it as a secondary ISP for when Comcast is having an outage <_<

wraith pier
#

Anyhow, I've got 200kb/s DSL where I live now, so that's an academic question for me.

subtle pasture
#

I suppose if DSL is the alternative, Starlink would be an improvement

#

Bandwidth-wise, at least. DSL tends to still have some of the best latency around.

wraith pier
#

I don't do much gaming, so latency is not an issue for me. The only issue I have is some lag in video calls sometimes, but that's manageable.

tidal bronze
#

Haven't checked my home speed in ages. 🙂

#

Even my lenovo is on built-in 5G and that's that.

subtle pasture
#

The 5G / LTE network around here is sad by comparison. 4 mbps down / 1 mbps up

real frigate
#

I wish I could get my full 2.5gb from my fiber, but I haven't invested in any 2.5gb/5gb switches yet.

subtle pasture
#

And that's with the phone synced at 5G to a local tower

tidal bronze
#

5g low band? or is it LTE masked

subtle pasture
#

It's actual 5G. My previous phone had the fake "5G that's actually LTE" thing going on.

tidal bronze
#

hmmm. 5g low would be around 13, probably not many bands available

#

Provider?

subtle pasture
#

AT&T

tidal bronze
#

Ohhhhhhh

#

that explains that. I would be happy with 4 🙂

subtle pasture
#

I've seen as high as 40 mbps over 5G if I walk outside the house and into the yard. lol

#

But yeah, as soon as I'm inside, speeds are like 3 to 5 mbps

tidal bronze
#

So you must be locking to single band and low throuput at that.

subtle pasture
#

WiFi calling is basically mandatory to actually make a phone call while indoors

tidal bronze
#

Wifi or VoNR?

#

if you have 5g it would be VoNR

subtle pasture
#

What would the 5G radio have to do with WiFi calling?

tidal bronze
#

🙂

#

Wifi calling is pretty old. Carriers now prefer VoNR

subtle pasture
#

Right, and VoNR would be used when making a call over 5G...

#

WiFi calling kicks in when there's no service

tidal bronze
#

VoNR takes priority if available, wifi then LTE

#

I don't know how ATT handles it

#

So you must have manually set to wifi preferred

subtle pasture
#

There's no setting for that

#

WiFi calling is either allowed or it isn't

tidal bronze
#

Hmmm

subtle pasture
#

It looks like AT&T didn't start deploying VoNR in the field until late 2023, so it's possible my local tower doesn't even support VoNR. lol

tidal bronze
#

Most likely

#

HD+ voice is much better on VoNR than Wifi

subtle pasture
#

This is it for WiFi calling settings

#

It's either on or off 🤷‍♀️

tidal bronze
#

I don't like wifi calling specially with AP handoffs. Call merge swaps holds all go south

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, well, my only other option is missing calls and texts because the signal is so poor here

#

WiFi at least makes things reliable

tidal bronze
#

Makes sense. Although SMS should come through even if you don't have data

forest edge
#

sure steam games would dl faster etc but in general

subtle pasture
winged obsidian
subtle pasture
#

And SMS would still require some kind of cell connection, which often isn't available indoors, so even SMS winds up using WiFi

winged obsidian
#

My WiFi ends up 5G anyway. Dumped Comcast in favor of AT&T Air. Lower bandwidth, but sufficient for 4K streams.

hell the quoted me almost 1 mil for the small ranch I want to build out at my farm

it would be only be just slightly bigger than what I currently have and they quoted me 1mil lol

it's stupid

They are meant to be bought and sold, repeatedly. 🙂

Of course not. Why would you?

100% local with the one I'm using. Gateway supports The Things Network - and their own service - but mine's just talking MQTT straight into HA.

think you showed me this before, don't think that is something I can even get easily here

ocean oar

Probably (USD) $300-400 for the gateway, sensors start in the $50 kind of range.

forest edge
#

I would build my own gateway but from what little i've read, finding devices that will work with it is not so easy

#

because of the frequency bs

#

and I guess those devices also require a handshake or something

#

I don't understand why something like that would have to be so complicated lol

#

I would use 433 but not sure my sdr could handle the heat in the barn

prisma briar
#

It'd probably be cheaper to run a raspi + zigbee module and send state updates over mqtt on lora from that than to buy individual lora sensors

If you had any number of sensors at least

Hello, i’m DIYing my NAS and I have a few questions about TrueNAS, please feel free to start a thread to answer, I’ll be thankful.

  • Is it okay if the HDDs are 18TB?
  • I only bought 3x 18TB HDDs, what are the requirements I must abide to if I want to add more HDDs in the future?
  • I heard that ZFS keeps all HDDs running 24/7 which consumes power and emits more heat and noise than Unraid which only spina the disc you’ll use, is that correct and how severe is it?

this stuff is scary to me when it comes to modren builders/contractors. https://youtu.be/u0ph2Kg0ak0?si=fOs-IxRwdvQ3hilw

We see roofers and homeowners install power roof attic fans all the time, and we often find them to be incorrectly paired with make-up ventilation so that they either 1) do NOT cool the attic when they are running or 2) depressurize the attic when they are running (turn the attic into a vacuum) and pull the conditioned air from the home. Size is not really a problem.

The problem comes from rebuild times with "only 1 parity" disk.

Using 3 disks you would run what truenas called z1, so you would have just less than 36TB raw and a "parity disk".

If you run backups you should be fine, but the idea is an 18TB drive takes a long time to rebuild and there is an increasing chance of failure during a rebuild, the larger the disks are.

ZFS runs all disks, starting and stopping disks as say unraid does, also wears out disks. Depends how often you are accessing the data. I don't believe anyone has done an hours running vs start stop cycles for drive wear though.

#

I would personally grab another identical 18TB drive if you really want to run trunas, and run a Z2 (36TB raw and 2 parity disks) but it depends on what you are comfortable with.

My old setup is a 4x8TB in a Z1 and I am moving to a 6x12TB on a Z2.

yes a huge problem with raid is your second disk failing during rebuild which is common. Raid just sucks in many ways. I like unraid. Latest iteration of ZFS is also good. At least with unraid if I ever had a catasrophic issue somehow, I could just pull the rest of my drives and read the data in whole, no problem. Only downside to unraid vs zfs is you don't have file level consistency but the vast majority of my data is.... hashed lets say... so thats not a concern

I was quite impressed with how... usable... ZFS has gotten recently.
Have one of these JBODs: https://www.areca.com.tw/products/jbod-4038.html, attached to an MS01 with a SAS HBA stuffed up it.
Just runs stock Ubuntu, no special NAS OS or anything.
Had a disk failure last week, and it actually turned on the error LED on the JBOD (and an annoying screechy alarm) and everything, I guess if your enclosure supports SES it JustWorks™ now.

I know I got an open-box one from a lot some guy broke up on ebay but it was the same price as two UniFI U6 Lite's and gets better coverage than the two U6 Lites did. I also had an AP AC Lite and an AP AC Pro I was using for IoT stuff

prisma briar

It also does zigbee and ble which I was going to try out but it looks pretty bad once I actually read up on it and it's not free

I'm not 100% sure if the Ruckus will repeat Zigbee messages across units over wired backhaul but I think that's the advantage they bring

#

but also expensive and geared towards hotels
