yes you think they are #1 we get it

All new cars*

forest edge
#

he did make one statement I didn't care for

#

saying the batteries are outlasting their cars

#

had a diagram showing battery percentage up to 200k miles

#

as if 200k is the hard "life of the car"?

#

also implied you had to drive x amount of miles to have your battery last up to 200k. those who don't drive much are sol

glacial knot
#

it is at the manufacturing quality of Tesla 😂

clear ferry
#

to be fair most teslas don't last 200k

#

heck, many don't last 70k

#

My collegues model 3 didn't pass the first EU-test after 4 years and 60k km, and that car had already replaced headlights twice, rear lights once, one window elevator, two break calipers, two heat pumps and a few door mechanisms, and the 12v battery

#

he said he has been in the shop 28 times in 2 years so far

forest edge
clear ferry
#

he's gotten the warranty extended 3 years so far

forest edge
#

early gens are going to have issues. not sure there is a vehicle company out there that dosen't have issues

#

even old established companies have issues

clear ferry
#

My audi 100 '92 had 420k km on it when I sold it in 2014

#

my audi a6 08 had 280k km on it when I sold it in 2016, my father still has it and it has done 370k km now

forest edge
#

you cannot compare diesel lol

clear ferry
#

my current xc90 I've had for almost 3 years, and done 60k on top of the 50k it had when I bought it, been in the shop twice, once for a noise from the roof curtain motor and once for rear caliper electric wire swap

clear ferry
forest edge
#

200k on a petro car is pretty good. considering at that point it's other things that make you want something new, not necessarily anything wrong with the engine or transmission etc

#

I kind of get the 200k remark on the tesla graph

#

but I don't agree with 200k being a cars eol

clear ferry
#

I don't think I have ever owned a car that did less than 250k km tbh

#

from 92->18 models

#

the only one that did 250k was a Golf 3 '93 with a blown head gasket, in 2012

forest edge
#

200k miles is like over 300km

clear ferry
#

yes

#

321 is still a ridiculously low number

forest edge
#

yea but as you said, you traded up around that range

clear ferry
#

when I still did stuff outside of home office I did 50-60k km total per year, then a car would only last 7 years

forest edge
#

so you kind of fall in line with that eol remark

clear ferry
#

based on that statement

forest edge
#

they didn't say teslas die at 200k. just they used that number in reference to eol. which I didn't care for

#

the battery chart they showed still showed like around 80% at 200k

#

but again, that lead me to thinking that 200k had to be put on the car in a shorter time frame than I would put 200k on a vehicle lol

clear ferry
#

not sure what warranty tesla has on batteries these days, volvo does 8 years or 160k km \ 100k miles , and if capacity is below 70% at that point they replace them

forest edge
#

google search states 8 year or between 100-150k miles

#

I don't get the mile or part on a battery

#

that seems dumb

#

I get miles stipulation on like mechanical parts etc but for a battery that seems stupid

clear ferry
#

not really, it defines the number of charge cycles

forest edge
#

gross.. while I get the ewaste part of it.. I do not like they can just slap in a reconditioned battery as a replacement lol

glacial knot
#

miles is probably an approximation of charge cycles that works for cars 🤷

clear ferry
#

fun stuff about evs in norway and e-waste

because the cars are so heavily subsidized, mostly any kind of damage to a car that is close to the battery mean it will be totalled, because it is more expensive to repair it (repair is not subsidized) than actually paying out the value and letting the customer buy a new car

There's a plant that's native to NZ - Harakeke, in the original Maori - for which the English name is "Flax".
Thusly named due to its use in weaving into fabric, but bearing ABSOLUTELY NO RESEMBLANCE WHATSOEVER to the European plant of the same name.
Seriously: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phormium_tenax vs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linum_usitatissimum

Phormium tenax (called flax in New Zealand English; harakeke in Māori; New Zealand flax outside New Zealand; and New Zealand hemp in historical nautical contexts) is an evergreen perennial plant native to New Zealand and Norfolk Island that is an important fibre plant and a popular ornamental plant. The plant grows as a clump of long, straplike...

Flax, also known as common flax or linseed, is a flowering plant, Linum usitatissimum, in the family Linaceae. It is cultivated as a food and fiber crop in regions of the world with temperate climates. In 2022, France produced 75% of the world's supply of flax.
Textiles made from flax are known in English as linen, and are traditionally used for...

As best I can tell amidst all the unrelated babbling, there are two things in this story:

  1. Governor rolled back some direction that was established by an earlier iteration of Virginia government. Somehow he wants people to believe that California passed laws in VA or something?
  2. Governor blocked some emissions standards. That will be relevant just as soon as more than zero auto manufacturers produce vehicles to the lower standards. Until then, irrelevant. That’s where the relative sizes of CA and VA economies matter.
static schooner
#

The only control that states really have here is the formulation of the gas that's sold within their borders. We're not going back to segregated car sales

forest edge
static schooner
#

the point is, though, that it's performative and doesn't matter at all

#

California will save Virginia from itself

forest edge
#

I'm more curious to see how the CA EV milage tax will play out

#

think one of the things I read threw numbers around like 30 cents to the mile rotf

ocean oar
#

That's been a contentious thing here in NZ too. To try and encourage EV adoption the government made them exempt until a threshold (I think 3% of registered vehicles being EVs).
Now there are a lot of people getting up in arms about the tax titled "road user charges", which are charged at $75 or so per 1000km (about $0.065 USD / mile).
It's a system that's been used for diesel vehicles since I can remember (and scales upward by axle count / vehicle weight). Petrol includes the tax at the pump.

forest edge
#

how do they handle the milage count to charge appropriately for the diesel?

ocean oar
#

Odometer for passenger vehicles

#

I think wheel hub counters for trucks

forest edge
#

so they are subject to like yearly insepection to obtain those numbers?

#

they are trying to do away with general vehicle inspections here

ocean oar
#

We have yearly safety inspections, so I assume that. I've never owned a diesel vehicle so haven't actually had to deal with that part of the process.

forest edge
#

so not sure how they will obtain those milage numbers to charge when a vehicle dosen't need to be inspected every year or whatever

weak musk

#

Yes, insurance

#

State Farm does it with smart phones, which seems problematic to be honest

winged obsidian
#

I don’t know how the insurance would validate either. Seems pretty easy to fake that data. Gets messy if there’s an adjuster and it doesn’t match, but in the meantime it’s not like that data is secure.

#

Bonus problem for State Farm: what do they do about iPhone? Last I checked, OBD readers that work for them have to use wifi because Apple in their infinite wisdom hasn’t exposed enough of the Bluetooth api for OBD dongles to work. WiFi dongles kill the battery if they aren’t turned off manually. Completely gross.

It’s either/or they use the phone or a device in the ODB port.

only eu gets both the 868 and 433

which is weird

since most of eu was more 433 over 315 on the older stuff

LoRa things I'm using are 922.2 / 922.4

But I think are the same hardware as for 915

The 868s have different RF bits

they need to stop separating crap like this.

Indeed, losing per-country RF regulations would make life a lot easier

I, for one, would love to live in a country with competent management who were allowing the entire 1200MHz of "6GHz" spectrum for WiFi

But nooooooo, we're only allowed to use 500MHz of it

I been running a community discord server since discord came out and I have entertained the idea of separating OT through various means like by category and even region which actually made sense in this case cause it was two separate communities due to game region limitations to begin with but in the end everyone just wanted to to be in one big melting pot together regardless

everything else is seperated but when it came to OT, people just wanted to be in one room

Toxicity is relative to the animal's weight. Great Danes tend to have sensitive stomachs, but an advantage is they can eat a surprising amount of chocolate or onions or whatever other bad thing without doing real damage. A disadvantage is when their system needs to disgorge a lot out one end or the other, it can be a lot. I had to have one pumped, and the result was a bag of liquid about the size of a volleyball.

#

Mac user here. Not perfect, but less suck overall.

snow hedge
#

I'm a big fan of analyse use case and pick appropriately. Linux is great if you're a software engineer, or if you only want to use a web browser and nothing else. OSX is great for music production, if you're a gamer you should probably be on Windows, etc etc.

forest edge
#

very little these days you can't do on windows

winged obsidian
#

When I go to meetups of sw engineers, the mix is usually very heavily macs with <5-10% linux and windows. Which way the linux/windows balance tips tends to depend a bit on the meetup topic.

forest edge
#

I dunno how anyone can like mac

snow hedge
winged obsidian
#

It's rarely a can/cannot do issue, especially with WSL2. More about ergonomics.

#

In my particular role, the biggest aggravation turns out to be Visio. Omnigraffle is 1000x better. MS has gotten every thing else effectively to parity.

#

and homebrew covers the vast, vast majority of CLIs you'd find on Linux.

snow hedge
#

To be fair, I don't think I could do half the stuff I do on Linux every day on Windows, Windows might be able to do it to some lesser/worse degree, but for example, I run hyprland, a tiling window manager, Windows can't do that, there are some Windows tiling managers, but they are vastly inferior.

winged obsidian

I also use a lot of JetBrains, which (mostly) DGAF which platform it's on.

winged obsidian
#

Production systems in my world are almost all either RHEL or Windows servers, or K8S. None of those makes for a competent desktop.

glacial knot
#

K8s on desktop is fun

#

But you need to push through quite a bit of the isolation to get useful graphical output

snow hedge
glacial knot
#

I don't think I've ever seen a windows server in practice o.0
Besides the one server my old job had for RDP to use crappy windows only software marketing liked

winged obsidian
forest edge
#

that's just personal preference tho.. not some indicator that windows cannot do most of what linux can if not all

#

it's getting harder and harder to really rip on windows tho you have to admit. linux never closed that gap like so many had hoped

winged obsidian
glacial knot
forest edge
#

the whole games aspect is what frustrates most of my friends who daily drive linux.. always got a chuckle out of that

snow hedge
forest edge
#

well windows does.. just not the fine tune features you want lol

#

(yet)

winged obsidian
forest edge
#

thats really only because someone hasn't made that manager yet as well.. not that it cannot be done

snow hedge
#

problem is by the time windows catches up, Linux will have already left and done something else cool. I'm probably going to be migrating to NixOS soon, declarative builds is something that Windows can't do.

glacial knot
#

Just use windows CE

snow hedge
#

glacial knot
#

Also kinda why I'm not gonna try nixos again
It's a very weird hybrid of pre-built and dynamic system

And I want either or, since I get to do proper measured boot with one

snow hedge

Suppose I'll find out if I hate it when I give it a go 🤣

forest edge

Windows users....

winged obsidian
snow hedge
# forest edge most people who have an issue with windows seems to have a job or something that...

Amusingly, the thing that actually pushed me to switch to Linux originally was:

2006, 32bit OS were the norm. Bought new PC with 8GB RAM, so needed 64bit, choices were XP 64bit or Vista, went with Vista. System would boot once, and blue screen on subsequent boots. I tried reinstalling a few times, then gave up and went to Linux. Never really looked back. I did eventually figure out that Windows update was installing a broken driver for my network card, but by then I was happier on the Linux side

🤷

forest edge
#

thats weird

winged obsidian
#

On Windows servers, my complaint isn't that things can't be done. It's the low bar of dipshits who can do it so very wrong, and the antiques that remain in production with mystery dependencies.

snow hedge
#

Windows update breaking windows installs is weird? 🤣

forest edge
#

every windows version had it's issues no doubt but can't say i've ever met anyone out of the gate have issues to drive them to thinking linux was somehow easier to work with lol

snow hedge
#

🤷 I'm the odd one out I guess, Linux just worked. Windows as apparent didn't.

forest edge
#

I remember the big push computer companies tried doing when they first sold computers for slightly cheaper that came preinstalled with ubuntu vs windows

#

that did not go as they had hoped lol

snow hedge
#

I'm happy that framework exists, they allow me to choose no OS for my laptop saving me £100+. I really hate paying more for a laptop to purchase an OS that I'm literally going to day one wipe.

winged obsidian
#

They had a gravy train to keep going.

forest edge
winged obsidian
#

Right, and they had no real interest in fixing that.

forest edge
#

i think there might still be some articles with dell customer support issues that showcased just how bad it got

winged obsidian
#

Probably, althought TBF showcasing all the ways Windows has gone wrong for various customers is...voluminous.

forest edge
#

well thats another thing in itself. I believe it was easier to help people over the phone with windows than linux

#

the irony is, windows started out not that much diffrent than how linux is and yet people managed alright back then but then I guess UI made the masses lazy or something lol

snow hedge
# forest edge the average joe could not operate ubuntu

depends what for, my mum daily drives Ubuntu, and statements like "It's not doing what I'm telling it to do" while touching the non touch screen are examples of her technical level. If you just want a web browser and nothing else, and an environment where the user can functionally do no wrong, Ubuntu is actually really good for that. I know my mum can click on all the "You've got a virus" popus and nothing will happen 🤣

winged obsidian
#

UI made the "masses" exist. Joe average computer user in 1990 had a very different set of skills than in 1995, 2000, 2010, 2002.

#

(FWIW, I was using X-Windows in 1990, and good luck supporting that beast over the phone 😄 )

snow hedge
#

haha yea, chromebook is also a good choice for that sort of use case

winged obsidian
#

My wife and one of my kids are both teachers. Having their students on those has been hugely helpful. Their own district-issued machines are macs 😉

forest edge
#

now we enter the realm of flavor linux vs flavor linux lol

snow hedge
forest edge
#

which is just as fierce as the linux vs windows haha

winged obsidian
#

Flavour rather than flavor from some, no doubt.

snow hedge
#

aww, custom emojis disabled 😦

winged obsidian
forest edge
snow hedge
#

Also I suppose touching on window manager stuff again, but, one thing that works really well for me in Linux land. We have workspaces (which I don't think exist on Windows or OSX?), basically think virtual monitors that you can switch between.

I have 4 physical monitors, each with 10 workspaces, and I can switch with keybind combinations, so super+3, 4 switches monitor 3 to workspace 4. I can also send windows to a workspace the same way just hold shift. 🙂

winged obsidian
#

I meant all the window managers, wasn't referring to android at all.

#

The only android in my house is a few TVs. I have no problem with Android itself. Not a huge fan of the amount of DNS blackholing my AdGuard had to do for those boxes though.

android works for what it's installed on

#

my mom is still chugging along on her asus chromebox 3.don't even remember how old that is and they still release updates for it

snow hedge
#

the hardware is fine, the software isn't

winged obsidian
#

Incentives in Android marketplace versus iOS have some weird differences, because the HW upgrade dynamics are different. People are more likely to change brands for Android, iOS has the lock-in aspect.

snow hedge
#

for reference, OnePlus dropped support for the 6 back in 2022

forest edge
snow hedge
forest edge
#

yea well.. that will likely never change lol

#

they all have to lock in thier own

snow hedge
#

Agree, sadly. There's nothing on the horizon that'll fix it.

forest edge
#

but as you said, you still could bypass and go another route

snow hedge
#

I do yea, but it still results in a lot of perfectly good hardware going to landfill, which is sad. I'm sure in the future society will look back on this stuff poorly.

winged obsidian
forest edge
#

they designed phones to be chucked

#

that was purley greed intentional

#

but that has nothing to do with android itself

snow hedge
forest edge
#

not really.. it's not much diffrent than diffrent flavors on linux

#

the manufactures build thier own

snow hedge
# forest edge the manufactures build thier own

Huh? On a normal Linux distro, the manufacturer doesn't have any say in whether I can update or not. I don't have to like, wait for Asus to release a new kernel for my motherboard, I just update?

forest edge
#

like blaming debian for something mint sucks at lol

forest edge
#

but again the base android at the root is not at fault

#

the only thing android is at fault for is back support for apps in earlier versions.. but that again is the same with any os

winged obsidian
snow hedge
# forest edge thats the difference between proprietary

No it's not, the same can be said about Windows and OSX which are proprietary, but not about Android.

In my view, the reasons are, largely:

  • Android provides no generic software update mechanism, every other OS does.
  • Google enforces features such as locked bootloaders for a lot of basic functionality
forest edge
#

its sticky to compare anything linux to like windows

#

the most is like comparing osx to that homebrew mac

snow hedge
#

It isn't when the point I'm making is that "Every other OS on the market can software update without manufacturer intervention but Android can't" 🤣

forest edge
#

linux flavors have thier own update servers

winged obsidian
#

Oh, you mean the x86 boxes that were hacked to run osx a few years ago?

forest edge
#

it's not generic in that sense

snow hedge
forest edge
#

but you blame android.. not the manufacture for that

#

I don't agree with blaming android for something someone else compiled with the intention of locking it down

snow hedge
#

I blame Android because, as I said, Google enforces features such as locked bootloaders and provides no update mechanism, which every other OS does

forest edge
#

there are tons of things that run some form of linux that is locked down that it's ewaste and yet we don't blame linux for that

snow hedge
#

Correct, Android phones are one of them, so we blame Android, not Linux, consistency 🤣

forest edge
#

which every other os does.. you have to limit that view to every other phone os.

snow hedge
#

Disagree, computing doesn't suddenly become different because the form factor is a phone

forest edge
#

it's was originally designed for phone only

#

it only grew beyond that

winged obsidian
#

It's hilarious that you two are talking about this like it's a technology issue. It's the economics, stupid.

snow hedge
forest edge
#

yea but you are blaming android lol

#

not the manufactures lol

#

thats my issue

snow hedge
# forest edge not the manufactures lol

Correct, because if the software was designed correctly, the same as literally every other OS, the manufacturers wouldn't be in a position to prevent you from updating 🤷

winged obsidian
#

Google does not sell Android to consumers. Google sells Android to handset manufacturers. If manufacturers wanted easy updates to handsets, Android would support easy updates to handsets. It is that simple.

forest edge
#

then they wouldn't use android lol

#

and we'd be stuck with something that did give them that power

#

see the point?

winged obsidian
snow hedge
#

🤷 if we are deeming phones end up in landfill after on average 3 years as designed correctly, I give up 🤣

forest edge
#

it's 2 not 3

snow hedge
#

based, great design 🤣

forest edge
#

they want the avergae lifespan of a phone to be 2 years

#

everything is going that route

#

hell cars are like somewhere around 10 years now lol

snow hedge
forest edge
#

but they didn't want you too

winged obsidian
#

I'm the guy with the 2020 phone running the latest OS version. You are the consumers in the market that is willing to buy a phone every 2-3.

#

(Also the guy with a 2012 model car, lol)

forest edge
#

snow hedge

#

Apple has been making an adjustment to deal with people holding handsets for longer the past few years. Mainly a function of the market-altering carrier locks.

forest edge
#

winged obsidian
forest edge
#

its all a scam tho.. baiting you in with false hope lol

snow hedge
winged obsidian

The adjustment has been to focus on more expensive phones.

forest edge

snow hedge
#

Also framework seems to be proven for now, they have released a fair few mainboard upgrades

forest edge

#

I have apple tv on the basement TV by the stationary bikes, my work office TV, and the tv room projector, but a googleTV with chromecast 4k on the tv room tv

#

i like both

prisma briar
#

I'm fond of my WebOS TV.

#

My Samsung TVs are both crap and unusable without dongles

forest edge
#

gross

torpid grove
#

I'm fond of treating every TV as a dumb TV, so they can't brick it

forest edge
#

i never cared for lg or samsung's os

#

not sure samsung uses the same as they use to tho

#

nope, they still do lol

prisma briar
#

I like LG's because it was easy to root and customize

forest edge
#

heh I had forgot the woman likely put her phone in airplane mode so the ha location card just did this quick update drawing the line across the country

real frigate
#

My LG has been delegated to one of my computer monitors. But my Vizios are pretty good. But I still have ATVs hooked up to them as well. So, really just dumb monitors at that point.

prisma briar
#

My LG is my main screen but 99% of the time I'm only using it with my PC.

#

That's where I play movies and YouTube from

real frigate
#

Same... and work too.

#

It sucks going into the office and going from a 60" monitor to a 27". lol

prisma briar
#

I have a desk with a 34" ultrawide for sit-down stuff, I only use my big screen for games and movies/tv anymore.

prisma briar
#

It was my main screen when I got it but sitting 3' from a 65" OLED was obnoxious

real frigate
#

lol true, but I'm so used to it now, it's hard to go back to a smaller screen... Plus, all the screen real estate...

#

Amazingly I still have good eyesight at least.

I have considered shifting to a huge ultrawide

#

But my head won't let me

#

as in there's not enough room for both your head and the ultrawide? or what

#

Yea, it's room filling

prisma briar

His head or the ultrawide?

Yes

# neon hawk what do u guys think of the new branding?

Truthfully, I don’t like it. Nothing to do with the aesthetics on their own merits, it has to do with being the yet another light blue icon with an outline of a house. My phone is starting to turn into one of those Star Trek panels with no labels and all the same shapes.

The mobile home thing is quite interesting though

#

Don't know any other country that does it

#

Nor understand why it is called mobile when it 99% the time is stationary and without wheels

real frigate
#

Oh, a lot of them still have the wheels attached. They just put skirting around the bottom to hide them. The reason is they are typically really cheap compared to a traditional house and mobile home parks usually make a killing on renting out spaces to them.

clear ferry
#

Different countries different stuff, Norway people mostly own their own house, apartments is usually an inner city thing, Amsterdam you can't own, only rent, US houses are just either a ditch or absurd mansions, and eastern Europe is most highrise apartment buildings

real frigate
#

Yup. True. I don't know about other coutries, but the US is the only place that I know of where we put these mobile homes in high-risk tornado areas. LIke, who was the brainiac that decided to put "houses" made out of tinfoil in a place where they can be torn apart in seconds???

clear ferry
#

Insurance companies love this one trick

real frigate
#

Insurance is actually optional in some states (South Carolina being one of them).

clear ferry
#

I've seen people in car crashes in the US who definitively don't have insurance

#

They run like the road runner

real frigate
#

YUP... HUGE problem here. I've been hit a couple times by uninsured drivers... I have to pay more on my insurance because of them.

clear ferry
#

LOL

#

That just makes no sense

real frigate
#

Yeah, it's messed up.

clear ferry
#

If someone hit my car (with or without insurance) I wouldn't pay a dime

real frigate
#

lol one would think that would be the way it is, right? I mean, that's logical. What's funnier is that when someone gets pulled over with no insurance, they get a citation. No jail time, nope. Just a citation which they rarely ever pay.

#

SOOOO messed up.

clear ferry
#

if you get stopped without insurance here you will be cited $15 per day until you insure it, that said you cant drive a car with licence plates because your plates aren't valid unless the car has insurance

#

you probably won't be allowed to drive anywhere with it either and have to leave it wherever you are stopped

#

we can opt for either jail time or citation if we are stopped for anything in traffic, last I got a ticket it was to be too close to the car in front of me

#

$800 citation

#

that would be 7 days in prison

#

but that would also mean it would be on your record

#

which is not very nice

torpid grove
#

where is that?

clear ferry
#

Norway

solar zealot
#

15 bucks for every day huh

#

That's less than the insurance cost over a year for people who start to drive

#

Imma come to Norway and commit a bunch of crimes... that's better than a studio apartment here!

That actually surprises me, tbh... with prison cells that nice, why are there good people at all? 🤣

clear ferry
#

Our houses are nicer, and the healthcare is still the same for convicts 😄

neon hawk
#

what are the re offending rates in Norway Vs USA?

#

thats the only thing worth comparing

weak musk
#

hahaha yep

#

it's <20% in norway

#

it's 76.6% in the US

real frigate
#

it's 76.6% in the US
That seems low to me. lol

weak musk
#

People really flock to the shining brutalist architectural examples found in US prisons.

real frigate
#

I toured the Brushy Mountain State Pennitentary recently... Holy crap that was eye opening. It's not still in use, but man oh man... the conditions were BRUTAL!

weak musk
#

can't be too brutal based on this

neon hawk
weak musk

real frigate

But, tbh, the real reason I went there was the road that leads out of the prison... First time I have ever been terrified of a road.

weak musk
#

Looks like a great reason to have a motorcycle

real frigate
#

Or a Mini Cooper

real frigate
#

That first S turn was insane. Then the rest of it... oh man... so much fun, but also terrifying as well. No guard rails and an insane drop off.

weak musk
#

that sounds like the road through Rocky Mountain National Park

real frigate
#

Love those classics too. The first Italian job was soooo much better than the remake. Although, the gen 1s that they used for the movie were some of the best that I ever drove.

tail of the dragon and such

real frigate
#

Yes sir!

#

The repaved Tail of the Dragon. SO MUCH NICER. I was just up there on Sunday and my poor tires were screaming around the bends.

#

But we also have the Diamondback (NC-226A) which is technically more challenging than the Dragon is.

weak musk
#

I still need to do it. I had a trip planned there before I moved west and it fell through due to timing.

real frigate
#

I still hold a record of one of the fastest times from the bottom of the mountain up to Little Switzerland. 8 min, 33 secs.

#

YOU SHOULD! Bucket list item for sure.

weak musk
#

Yes definitely. LOTS of cool things to do in that area of the country

real frigate
#

100%. Part of the reason why I live where I do. I'm about 2.5 hours from the Dragon, 1.5 hours to the Diamondback and about 3 hours to the Claw of the Dragon as well.

weak musk
#

That's prime.

real frigate
#

lol is it sad that I kinda chose my place to live because of the car I own? That's not crazy or anything, is it?

forest edge
weak musk
#

I bought my house because it had the best yard for my dog. Do with that what you will.

real frigate

@neon hawk Do you have a link for that IR blaster???

neon hawk
real frigate
#

Thanks!

neon hawk
#

i was helping a guy getting his homemade IR system working - now its working he wants to build Keith's version

real frigate
#

I really like how Keith's version looks and seems to work. I am still searching for the Harmony Hub replacement of my dreams and I am slowly getting to the point where I know I'm going to have to just build it.

weak musk
#

Gotta get in touch with that guy in the video I linked last week

neon hawk
weak musk
#

that's sick!

real frigate
#

I keep going back and forth on it, tbh.

weak musk
#

what do you need a universal remote for? I had/have a harmony but I barely need it (it really just powers on the sound bar + tv on my older tv at this point)

real frigate
#

For everything? So, my media in the living room has a TV, soundbar, AppleTV, XBox, PS5, etc. With my Harmony and HA, I can just tell Alexa to turn everything on, set the inputs, and then control the specific device that I need to (AppleTV for sources/content, soundbar for volume, etc).

#

In my office, I have 3 "monitors" (2 TVs and one actual monitor), plus a soundbar and my PC with an IR receiver. With a universal remote and HA, I can toggle all of them on, set the inputs and issue commands to the PC.

neon hawk
#

a touch screen that I can control a ton of things for and on the main page its a dashboard

#

in the next week orso I am going to be totally rebuilding that device to use the new LVGL support in ESPHome

real frigate
#

Alright… SOLD!!! I’ll put in an order for the parts this week.

neon hawk
#

havea look at lilygo and m5stack stuff - u might find a device that fits your needs already

#

with a touch screen and a rotary encoder built onto an S3

real frigate
#

Ok. Thanks @neon hawk I kinda do want to build it on my own, but then my laziness looks at me and says “buy it” lol

weak musk
#

Sony tv, Yamaha receiver, Apple TV in the mix of that. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s been solid for me thankfully.

If you are in an area affected by the heat dome or extreme heat, remember to drink more water. Rise in humidity can make it harder for you to feel when you sweat and you can get dehydrated faster. 😌
