I finally dedicated some time to getting my UCR2 set up and it's actually working pretty well. Fortunately, there are community-provided integrations for my LG TV, Kodi, and wake-on-lan that close the gap with the ones that are built and allow me to avoid a trip through HA for almost everything. I appreciate that the community integrations can be made into containers and that I can edit, debug, and modify how they work to my liking

#

Along with the HA integration that lets me kick off activities, it's working well and seems to be a good Harmony replacement. Going through HA was my first approach, but I found that to be slow for interactive things like cursor movement, and also complicated the setup

The box itself actually has it's own on/off behavior by default, it'll play the tone for 10-15s and shut off to keep from overheating, and wont run for more than like 10 or 15m in a single strech

#

But that's in the very loud mode, it's got a massive heat sink inside for the power driver

#

But it's verrrry quickly becoming a "bark off" button for the neighbor's dog

And it works on my own dogs, they ran out this morning and barked a few times before quickly shutting up and taking care of biz

#

But it's also not the factory one

#

Can't tell, all the stickers on it are facing the frame and I'm not pulling it out and unmounting it to check

#

I have my printers on smart outlets, if my 3D printer smoke detector goes off it kills power to them.

forest edge
#

you don't really hear about 3d printer fires these days

prisma briar

They've had a decade to work those kinks out

forest edge

prisma briar

The early fires were due to stupid crap like poor quality counterfeit XJ-60 connectors or wires being tinned before being put into screw terminals or bad firmware that lacked any 'I'm putting power in but it's not getting hotter' logic

My Ender 3 had all those issues

Gotta get some fuzzy logic in the mix

prisma briar
#

That's actually a good description of ChatGPT, marketing for VC funders

orchid rose
prisma briar
#

I think in the end it'll be a small part of a very large system.

#

I think the interest it's generated in AI is going to do more to further AI than ChatGPT itself

forest edge
#

ai coming to take away your jobs!

#

wonder how many work from home people are scared lol

prisma briar
#

I'm not particularly scared of AI taking my job. I do foresee my job having more AI management in it though.

orchid rose
#

I'm absolutely fucked by AI, but it is what it is

orchid rose
forest edge
#

it's already replacing some jobs in real world

#

only going to get worse

prisma briar
#

Technology has been obsoleting and creating jobs since the dawn of humanity. There's been multiple massive shifts in technology in living memory. I think people will be fine.

orchid rose
#

I'm not saying it won't be fine, but it will be probably the biggest change since the Internet and we should prepare for it

forest edge
prisma briar
#

I'm not sure how you got that from what I said. Every generation should optimally work less than the previous.

#

But that goes against capitalist ideals.

forest edge
#

currently there are job openings in every profession that requires someone to get off thier ass and those are not being filled because of means of making money while sitting on it

#

once ai takes those ass sitting jobs away..

#

either future generations will have to learn to work harder than previous or we be in trouble

prisma briar
#

There will be tons of skilled workers with free time and no tasks to create new ventures, things like taxes on AIs are likely, the world will correct for it.

forest edge
#

i like your positivity!

#

optimistic till the very end!

prisma briar
#

I'd argue that the issue around skilled workers is more of a cultural issue in the US than a financial issue, anyways. Too many people think every job needs to suck and try to make it happen for everyone they work with.

#

As in skilled tradesmen

#

And it's just easier to avoid working with crappy people in a structured office environment, there's more effective systems for removing those people.

forest edge
#

we gonna turn into the Kree from Marvels

#

with our ai overlord

#

just imagine how many jobs ai will quickly snatch up.. any data entry like IRS or any of that will be gobbled up

prisma briar
#

That shit was gone to computers ages ago

forest edge
#

whole lot of ass sitting jobs in the world

#

not like it will be

primal laurel
#

But more the foundation of it not the implementation

prisma briar
forest edge
#

its still a human job for most places

#

hell we haven't even got our history backed up yet fully

prisma briar
#

Data entry for things like forms and documents at any scale has had automation available for a long time

forest edge
#

eh not the same as ai

#

tax people use it but again, it's still a human that is behind the wheel

#

tax site are mostly automated but again. there is still a human at play

orchid rose
prisma briar
#

There's always a human at some point, when they're handling tens of thousands of peoples' documents a day is the human really at the wheel for each?

forest edge
#

once ai is capable of replacing the "job meeting" and phone calls to clients etc

#

I mean holy hell

#

most the jobs where someone sitting at a computer is only currently saved by the human interaction portions of it

#

call centers

prisma briar
#

I think that either greatly downplays the human contribution or greatly over-estimates what AIs are doing

forest edge
#

those are still humans

prisma briar
#

Are they?

forest edge
#

yes

#

they are

prisma briar
#

Shells of former humans at best

forest edge
#

not as many humans as it use to be but yes, still are humans lol

prisma briar
#

I started at my current place in the call center

#

Most of my job was linking people to help desk articles

forest edge
#

it's still a human doing a job.. even if you were bad at it lol jk

prisma briar
#

I was the team lead for the third shift call center crew for a while. That was a group of characters.

forest edge
#

even amazon still employyes tons of workers even tho most of the internal work is done by robots but most of those human ran jobs can already now be gobbled up by ai

#

all the way up to deliveries lol

#

have one human ceo in a sea of ai lol

prisma briar
#

People need to rise up and seize the means of production from the CEOs before that.

#

Capitalism just doesn't work in a world without demand for labor.

orchid rose
orchid rose
forest edge
#

was always so comical about those articles and movies scene that insinuated that robot replaced jobs would fill human needed jobs with repairing the robots but they never showcased how the sheer amount of jobs replaced by robots only ever opening up a fraction of the amount of jobs for humans are repairmen lol

orchid rose
prisma briar
# orchid rose You're going to have substantiate that somehow

His statement implied the majority of WFH jobs were in danger of being automated away, I think that that either downplays the human contribution or over-estimates what AIs are capable of, especially in regards to things like knowing what's really true or not or having consistent judgment.

forest edge
#

but the job itself doesn't need all of that extra complexation

prisma briar
#

What job? What complexity?

#

idk about other peoples' jobs but a small part of my job is human interaction

#

An AI could do all that and I'd still have more than enough work to have a job

forest edge
#

most likely will

prisma briar
#

idk, the human interaction for my job is basically limited to understanding the tasks assigned to me

forest edge
#

and you don't think an ai will be able to do that?

prisma briar
#

To go to my meetings for me?

forest edge
#

like i said above

prisma briar
#

Or to do my full job ?

forest edge
#

its only a matter of time but they are working on that lol

prisma briar
#

Meetings without the rest of my job is useless, the rest of my job is directed by the meetings, even if an AI took my meetings for me I'd basically have to have a meeting with the AI afterwards to get filled in.

forest edge
#

right now that human interaction is your jobs security but that won't always be the case

prisma briar
#

No it's not

#

I'm flattered you think my people skills are why I have a job

forest edge
#

communication between humans is not some barrier that cannot be breached

prisma briar
#

It's also not the barrier to an AI doing my job

forest edge
#

job meetings won't even exsist once those jobs are replaced

#

the only thing they need to figure out is how to get an ai to handle talking to humans and doing what is relayed to it

orchid rose
#

The question is in what jobs the AI will be less efficient than a human. Right now, I'm clearly more useful than ChatGPT, but it's been literally two years since we even learned about these existing. I'm completely fucked but I think as a society we can fix that

forest edge
#

well fast food places are replacing the person who takes the order with ai right now lol

#

what happend to that burger joint we saw a glimpse off a few years ago where the cook was ai with a robotic arm?

orchid rose
#

Anything customer related is fucked

forest edge
#

in the end landscapers and some tradeskills like plumbers will be all that's left lol

#

and a shit ton of ai repairmen lmao

prisma briar
#

I welcome AI removing shitty fast food jobs, then maybe society can quit pretending they're a valid career and the people who work them are meaningfully employed.

forest edge
#

robotic repairmen i mean..

orchid rose
#

The experts in the scene seem to think they are done in the next five years. It's absolutely wild

prisma briar
#

AI is going to screw over tradesmen, too. A bulk of a master tradesman's value comes from their ability to do schematics and drawings, when an AI can take a photo and shit out a schematic.

forest edge
#

the problem will be how the economy handles the transition. we're already suffering from one massive transition

we're gonna switch over, go broke and then everything shuts down

While US companies pay federal corporate income taxes levied at 21% or (8.84% in California where Nvidia is based), tax breaks expanded by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as well as the CARES Act enacted in 2020 meant 55 big corporations in the US paid nothing in corporate taxes that year. Instead of paying a collective total of $8.5 billion, they received $3.5 billion in tax rebates, amounting to $12 billion in corporate tax breaks. Nvidia is a beneficiary of these two laws.

Easier than having multiple single-outlet plugs, since all those things are plugged in at a single location

forest edge

your using an indoor power strip outside?

#

I get the outside lighting stuff. I use a KP400 for xmas lights

Where's that 680hp Astro?

All low-voltage lights, and none of their transformers are outdoor-rated either

#

Probably could have gone with mains voltage lights for the most recent install, but didn't see any real reason to

Looking for suggestions for a non cloud thermo stat.
I love eco bee but I hate how HASS only operates via cloud.
I hate that I can only get motion on HK.
Been looking at honey well systems so I can use dampeners in my ducks for zoning purposes. But when I look on integrations I see that honey well has a cloud symbol just like ecobee.
Goal is to localize thermostat control.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

dumb thermostats are the future

Well, we have an external sensor and then TRVs

#

To be specific

solar zealot
#

It's one of the smart things I don't get why it exists. You set it to a comfortable temperature like -once- and then it automatically turns the heat on or off as there be demand

Everyone loves rgb and extra apps

#

And cloud services

#

I agree 100% btw, some things don't need to be smart, it just needs to work

#

The outdoor sensor just sets the water temp, roughly, idea is that you didn't always have trvs, but our house gets too warm otherwise

real frigate
#

lol @ rgb trvs... like, why?!

I have yet to insulate the loft properly, but I run it as an underfloor heating curve, otherwise all the trvs just all close 🤣
