I've considered going huge monitor
But my workflow prefers 3x4k
Would have liked 4
We know that your workflow is full of money
I'm on 2x 4k 27 inch but I could add one more
I will need to get rid of my Samsung one at some point
It's fucking horrible
It being capable of displaying an image is a wonder considering how broken the software is
Can't reliably use the controls, it has input auto detection but it won't automatically switch
Also the massive 6? dimming zones
wtf apple
How common is it that a modern cpu just breaks?
My 13700k died last night, replacement takes 2 days 😣
did you have pi issues too? maybe you just have bad luck lol
.
ive not seen a toasted. CPU for ages, but life happens...
i've never had a ram stick die either but have a friend who has had that happen so I know it exsists lol
ive had a ram stick die on me, when I. Desolderes tge ram chips off of it to reuse. Elsewhere
Yes my roaming pi2 zero. to play music anywhere in the world now has voice assistant.
ram sticks don't like missing. Chips for some reason
yes, the transplanted chips have worked fine for many years
You still use Pi
and eat it too
Oh boy
crunchy
5 days of Vino starts now
is that like lent but instead you can't drink wine?
*only
Oh it's always. Gotta stay home for 5 days 😞
I don't travel during major holidays.
hmmm
stuck at home for 5 days? whatever will you do? oh wait, you'll make us sick with your cooking pictures..
Might hit the beach if there's no people.
You don't have a private beach? Or at least a friend with one?
it's more fun to watch the poors
Do, but their friends come over. People, not good for your health
Don't have beer drinkers around here, sorry.
only vino
Or Scotch, yes sir
Bummer, it's taken https://www.whois.com/whois/onlywines.com
they should just take domains away from non-practicing entities 😦
I sold googledeeznuts.com now I regret 🙄
that goes without saying after watching your news lol
So Cate Blanchett likes champagne over cabernet franc?
@tidal bronzeso what kind of non meat sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard are you going to call a burger on monday?
I am thinking lobster
Got some good Szechuan peppers from China. Going to do kung pao chicken Sunday dinner

are you talking to her or just snapping pictures from a table behind her? lol
I am a huge movie buff.. i really do not know if I could ever meet anyone in any movies I like.. be too afraid of it somehow impacting how I view the movies lol
It changes everything. Worse if you work in the industry. For me ita forever ruined
I am a huge movie buff
Ain't no way... Gimme a top-5 so I can ridicule it
Champagne over wine is picture worthy
don't like her preferring to add a little sparkle to her wine?
so what you are saying is just inspire to ever meet your heroes in the porn industry cause regardless of their personality your view of them on film won't really ever change much? lol
my music up/down/on/off/next/prev/<artist>/<radio>/<podcast> on expected device is finished.
That is disgusting and I don't know if I want to stab you or applaud you. 🤣
They are the coolest nicest
and how do YOU know?
Never met a hero from the porn industy who wasnt nice.
I would say, extra nice.
Are you gona chainsaw me to death if i tell you i gona add room selection based on my phone wifi ap point if phone is home and zelky (my music pi zero roaming system) isnt active
Chainsaw? Psh... do I sound like I'm from Texas? lol (but actually... how??? Do you have an AP in every room?)
AP in every room 🤔
mud huts block signals through walls
Right?! I mean, I have 3 in my small house (way overkill)... but every room?! lol
living room master bedroom study/guestroom
we should consult with our local expert on the matter @clear ferry he just said the other day he has like over 20 or something ap/routers
LMFAO
You really believe the fiber dude?
I had 3 free tp-link mesh from my inet provider. With working ethernet connections.
so i can plug in my voip phones
@real frigate your on tweakers so i guess your not from texas
Wait what?! What the hell? lol I'm on tweakers?! I don't know if that's a compliment or an insult.
EXCUSE ME????
@forest edge 1983 December 18th 20:23 Norway used the last magnetic strip. 1979 June 5th 06:34 last PSTN call. That's according to @clear ferry
I took no part of that conversation!!! I've been framed!!!
Lies and scandal!
In fact I've been helping in zigbee this whole time... lmao
it wasn't exactly exaggeration lol #the-water-cooler message
That dude fucking cracks me up for real.
All those, "12 years ago. 19 years ago, 23 ago"
Is this where you tell me to quit talking about porn and get back to work? Of which I DIDN'T TALK ABOUT NO PORN!!! 😛
not talking about porn is a form of inhumane treatment
It’s Friday. Why are you still working?
Don't have to be sorry for the ultimate reason for all technical progress in the world.
Define "working"? Technically I'm on until 18:00 and then on-call until Tuesday morning.
lol fair... but apparently I have a reputation now. 😉
speaking of which. I need to get ready to head out. visiting the city today for the first time in awhile to go here to look for some garden tools. https://www.strasser-hardware.com/
I’m not sure you actually work ever.
Fine... I'll add you to my PRs so you can see that I'm actually working... ooooohhhh and I had 4 miserable meetings today!!!
AND! I've been quiet nearly all damn day!!!
Every one works, specially me
Why on would you need garden tools when you live in a barn?
I’m not sure 80 less messages since yesterday is something to brag about. 🤣
the whole concept is just foreign to you to the point where i question your citizenship lol
It's still less tho... and quit stalking me! Stalker McStalkerstien! 🤣
It’s not stalking, it’s using my resources!
Potato Tomato... or however that saying goes... lol
tbf, there are worse people that could be stalking me.

wana trade?
fried ... tomatoes?
@forest edge so happy this time we are not crossing middle earth this time around. No internet goblins. I wish this was the norm
airlines can no longer afford to keep rebuilding what they lose lol
I'm still waiting to hear why you have an AP in every room...
Daft_dutch — vandaag om 23:34
I had 3 free tp-link mesh from my inet provider. With working ethernet connections.
[23:34]
so i can plug in my voip phones
Must have gotten lost in the porn discussion that I was in no way a part of.
So wait... you only have 3 rooms?
enough im alone
and i dont have a AP in the bathroom
the music in the bathroom automaticly switches to bedroom or living room music
Oh wow
lol well that's just lame... everyone needs an AP in the bathroom.
cheaper to purchase additional sam's than it is to replace lost airplanes
That is no SAM, but rocket artillery
On another note, how about that market and BTC? What a great time to be alive ♥️
O dear if im in my study it still uses my bedroom AP
lol are you starting to rethink this whole AP presence thing yet?
Restart? Wifi? Oh boy. No Bueno
Did it finally raise to $1 a coin?
Lol
Yes, the garlic +/- butter?
Garlic? No it's sweet butter tho
What a let down
mmmm
Where's the wine?
C’mon… you can do better than Texas Roadhouse. Have some standards! 🤣
Freshly baked cookies and wine 😆
100% better than Texas Roadhouse lol
nothing wrong with texas roadhouse.
Sure… it’s great when you need a good clean out
same is said for anything that isn't home cooked.. so not really saying anything new lol
Everything
how would you know? I doubt you even been in one lol
Just the name
not seafood sounding enough for you? lol
so you make the uber go through the drive thru so you can stuff your face in the backseat of thier car?
I've truly never considered taking an Uber to get takeout
Like UberEats, but you tag along for the ride
I'm disappointed that my cat has yet to figure out that there's a button on her food dispenser exactly at nose height that gives her food, but she sits there and looks at the dish and at me and back and forth until I press that button
The one we have lets you disable the button, in case your cats figure it out
My cats, I don't think that's likely to be an issue
Yeah, I can disable it. I'm just curious if they'll figure it out
It's like it was pretty designed for them to smush their nose into it
the second they figure it out is the second you regret not disabling it
holy hell batteries for tools are way too much
Hmmm, reddit job postings for Home Assistant, I wonder if they need a remote raccoon mascot?
On my phone
@last cedar the raccoon also needs to work when the inet is down.
My work as CGO || cheif garbage officer || is not cloud based
I thought your job was to become filament?
inspire to better one self and all of that
what about remote eldritch horror
I have currently 13 powered APs in my house yes
Hi to all. I'm here for the first time. I dare to share a link to my friend's project. the project regarding the automation of air alarms in Ukraine https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/s/pPZ1XjYd7P
lol isn’t that overkill or do you live in a mansion?
He's just a klepto and none of the public buildings near him have wifi anymore
Insane what some people have to go through, but great to see that HA can do something to help
I have multiple wireless labs, simulated multi site with VPN and personal wifi
small botnet
No, that lives in the garage
lol
I think you got a couple wires on your wireless
Yes, common problem, makes it wiremore
I feel like maybe you need a 12 step program or something 😉
No, I do need a payraise though
You already make more than some of the poorer nations, how much more do you want?!
At least 20% more
That could probably buy you half of Africa
or a half of cup of fanta in bangkok
that's some fine chess there
@tidal bronze you excited? https://youtu.be/RW0l1dReGRo?si=L3HcrtJdnQbJQP2O

But the queens we use would not excite you

it's a dock with a built in gpu
interesting that is also has a nvme slot
Pretty weird choice to further starve the GPU of bandwidth
You can do 4 lanes of pcie over thunderbolt and oculink is 4 normal lanes over a funky connector, that's enough for a gpu to be a major benefit over some of the crap laptops come with
It's only a 7600m anyways
egpu docks also aren't new
I think Razer makes one
Or made at least
The Razer Core x Thunderbolt 3 external desktop graphics enclosure enables full transformation of your compatible laptop into a desktop-class gaming or workstation setup. The Thunderbolt 3 design provides dedicated lanes for both graphics and I/O ensuring fluid gameplay. Connect to the future wit...
Did you figure out your Razer problem btw @forest edge? I had the program running for a bit and immediately noticed it felt sluggish
no. here for the last few days I not had it do it but it will come back.. always does lol
Oof
its software without a doubt. I think I did update the synapse like last week and maybe that cleared it up temporary but I see there is another update pending so that might bring it back. dunno
You'd think that a keyboard is about as simple as it comes these days, but apparently not
well with all the built in storage for profiles and the weird functions they introduce I wouldn't exactly call it simple
one thing that kind of urked me about this black widow is the damn switches look like they are removable but I believe they are soldered in
so there are the holes for the removal tool for dirt and crap to fall into but you can't pull the switch to clean lol

waiting for the eating then swimming competitions. watch as the crowd cheers as one of the contestants has a stroke mid way through the pool after eating 109 hotdogs
so 108 is the limit
somebody has to take one for the team, in the name of science

Is that a cow?
That gave me nightmares… while I’m awake. If that ever happens, we’ll have to nuke it from orbit.
stinky raccoon
Raccoon on Halloween
I have no words…
Well. I saw a car from the city of Cottbus (their plate identifier is C). It is followed by 1-2 letters and 1-4 numbers.
They got one combination (or chose that - more likely), which formed a NSFW word
lol what was the word??? I’m curious not.
beat ya to it? lol jk
Hahaha yeah… dude stole my thunder. 😉

This cat is scary smart.
This cat is frighteningly clever.
The owner, knowing all too well about this cat's crafty ways, preemptively placed a wedge in the door to prevent any sneaky escapes.

Today I decided it was time to buy a fan
I didn't see any monthly recurring subscriptions tho, have I been scammed?
Don't worry! It's just the trial period.
I see
I finally dedicated some time to getting my UCR2 set up and it's actually working pretty well. Fortunately, there are community-provided integrations for my LG TV, Kodi, and wake-on-lan that close the gap with the ones that are built and allow me to avoid a trip through HA for almost everything. I appreciate that the community integrations can be made into containers and that I can edit, debug, and modify how they work to my liking
Along with the HA integration that lets me kick off activities, it's working well and seems to be a good Harmony replacement. Going through HA was my first approach, but I found that to be slow for interactive things like cursor movement, and also complicated the setup
It's improved a lot over the last 6 months or so
@forest edge is a cat, and is hiding in this picture, full of raccoons. Try and spot them
Found the kitten
Oh indeed there us
Too subtle, IMO
unrealistic you mean. no self respecting cat would hang with racoons
I had to go back to Reddit and had the same failed strategy as the commenters
It's less about finding a cat and more about finding not a raccoon in the subtlest possible way
the lack of mask stood out for me
You just need to chuck it into frigate
It will instantly tell you where the dog hides
100 dogs
Great to hear.
I wrote up a few potential improvements here: https://unfolded.community/t/ui-tweaks-to-activity-setup/1772

Did you try onlyfans?
Some kind of it I guess
its an important meeting
The Kodi integration would help but without a Yamaha MusicCast integration I'm still heavily reliant on HA.
Yamaha in the mix?
Looks good.
Yamaha has an integration right

I'm a big fan of grilled corn
Don't know why people cook it in the husk, if you're going to steam it just do it in the microwave
Oil and salt, get it a bit charred around the edges. Yours looks perfect
I actually cook it in the husk on a charcoal grill with some smoking chips to give the corn both a steamed and slightly smoky flavor too.
Not for the universal remote we are talking about.
Better get on that! 🙂
Many just use the same underlying packages that HA uses
It's nice that the community integrations can be easily debugged and modified. I made them all into docker containers if they weren't released that way
@tidal bronzejust got back from eating here tonight. https://elpotrokc.com/
pretty sure the rest of my evening will be pretty similar to if I ate out your way lol
Interesting mix. 👍
Time to switch nucs to MS-01
why? because it costs more?
Oldest one is 2+ years. Don't want to replace fans and stuff in a pinch.
i'll DM my address for shipping
help ya clear out some of the clutter you keep accumulating
Too kind.
Do you happen to have any ddr4 supermicro stuff that you "don't want to break and will give to a needy raccoon"? 🦝

I made a high-powered ultrasonic dog bark deterrent box this weekend that runs esphome, complete with frigate bark detection. Being able to shut the neighbor's chihuahua up has been priceless.
frigate bark detection?
I should install one in my friends house with a nagging dog without saying anything
Frigate has audio detection with a million sound event type choices
I installed a voltage converter, esp8266 and an optical relay in one of these: https://myskunkworks.net/index.php?route=product/product&path=61&product_id=74
I made an automation that steps up the on time each time I hit a button
So first time the dogs only get 5s and it works its way up if they won't shut the fuck up
With a 5m cooldown
The box itself actually has it's own on/off behavior by default, it'll play the tone for 10-15s and shut off to keep from overheating, and wont run for more than like 10 or 15m in a single strech
But that's in the very loud mode, it's got a massive heat sink inside for the power driver
But it's verrrry quickly becoming a "bark off" button for the neighbor's dog
And it works on my own dogs, they ran out this morning and barked a few times before quickly shutting up and taking care of biz
My dog likes to go outside and give a single sharp bark at 6 AM
Go out, morning poop, single bark, come inside
Don't you announce when you poop?
My cat announces when she brings her stuffed toy upstairs
Frigate bark detection is priceless.
It doesn't detect every noise as a bark?
No, really good haven't seen any false positives. Speech is not great but still usable.
I've gotta play with the min volume levels on my setup, it doesn't always register the neighbor's dogs barking
I got a ton of false positives for other triggers like gunshots and explosions
Anytime the construction workers dropped something on the ground down the hill from me
Running default settings on all my cameras. Didn't tweak any settings. I am using for PiP pop ups when they are in the backyard.
Gotta test fire alarm one of these days
I tried buying a zigbee fire alarm detector and it sucked and never triggered
lol.
those things are kind of controversial around here due to the potential damage to hearing for animals
How come there's more PVC fittings in Amazon than HD
because amazon includes all the weird shit no logical plumber would ever use
what are you looking for the hardware store isn't carrying?
SCH 40 stuff. Adding an automated diverter valve to Spa blower so I can fine tune side Vs bottom bubbles.
yea a single 3 way valve is not going to a common thing lol
Plus bottom feed is 2" and sides are 1.5". So going to use a 3-way 2", reduce to 1.5"
you are gonna be stuck using 2 ball valves on a Y
I hate pvc ball valves
worse crap ever
you gonna pay those prices for that
those more specialty valves which are generall industrial cost an arm and leg
$50 not bad, and actuator $100
lmao
not bad he says
here you go
20 bucks
20 bucks is "not bad"
lol not plug and play with the actuator
so what the hell is the pipe that fits onto that?
The actuator screws to the top of the Jandy type valve.
yea I have a hot tub. not a pool.. no idea wtf that is lol
I work with alarms, door entry and cameras and such, I wouldn't trust anything like that, as you found out, they can be very unreliable, and it isn't something you want to be unreliable!
I have a monitored system now so I don't rely on that kinda dector anyways
This is good!
I have sirens, strobes and sms messaging, and it turns my ventilation system off if they trigger (by design)
Never thought about that last one but good idea
Indeed.
My system has a 110db siren outside my bedroom if it triggers, it's impossible to sleep thru I know for a fact when my kid opened a window in the middle of the night
I would not be happy if fire is not centrally monitored.
If it's a real fire, it takes very little time to lose everything
Yep.
Haha, I guess all your neighbours know too!
I have z-wave pro smoke detectors and they've been solid so far. My automations have fired every time I expected them to.
I think I had 1 ZW detector ages ago.
Here in Sweden, a central monitoring station will not call the fire brigade if a "basic" alarm goes. Installs at places like hospitals etc you can. So I really am not gaining anything by using one
Mine also do CO monitoring
Would need a camera that was also connected to the monitoring station, and it isn't easy as a private person
Here I just pay a fine if they show up and it's not a real fire
I think you get one freebie
Fire alarms here are actually connected to the fire station. No need to route calls. Routing is only for burglar alarms and I am not interested in any alarm other than fire.
Here you have to have a permit for an alarm. They pull your permit every false alarm and you have to renew it, having a false alarm without a permit is really expensive.
Here it's just another yearly fee for the permit + false alarm fines
My rational was that I could use internal cameras and call 112 myself, and perhaps unlock doors remotely to save them from breaking down doors, etc
That's a good course of action.
If they don't have forced entry some insurance will deny claims
My average fire response time is about 2 minutes. I think LAFD can handle far better than I ever could.
I had my system set up to call my phone for a while if it detected anything but my credits for my SIP service ran out
I ordered my system out of paranoia when moving into seattle, turns out I moved into the lowest crime neighborhood in town lol
I'm more worried about fire than burglary
Good for you. I haven't used a burglar alarm in a long time.
Yeah the fire is my same worry, I have one of my monitored dectors right over the 3d printer lol
Yea, the 3D printers are my biggest concern
My thermal protection settings are pretty aggressive on my firmware, unlike stock crealty firestarter firmware lol
Even then you're one inopportune MCU hang or power glitch away from the heater locking on
With home use, I wonder how an insurance claim handler will address a printer caused fire 🙂
I'm sure they have standards for it now
IT's not a UL-listed device, so get rekt
3D printer fires are pretty common
Cheaper to get it printed elsewhere
What would even be UL listed on a printer? The power supply?
Everything else is low voltage DC
Unless you've got one of those death hotbeds that puts mains voltage to the bed, but you should replace it if you do
I think normally anything on mains yeah
? most all heating elements even for blankets are the same way
What I was getting at is the part that'd catch on fire on a 3D printer isn't normally a high voltage part that'd require a listing
the nozzle is the part that catches on fire and while it's in use
thermal runaway
which is pretty much solved these days
The 3D printer ones like that are known for being quite low quality and having wires break/dead shorting to the chassis, they're about the cheapest ones you can get
Most printers have used DC hotbeds for years now
I'm pretty sure most 3d printers wouldn't pass UL testing anyways
I think enclosed printers would have a chance, open frame designs would fail in multiple ways I think
I might have a UL listed power supply on my ender 3
But it's also not the factory one
Can't tell, all the stickers on it are facing the frame and I'm not pulling it out and unmounting it to check
I have my printers on smart outlets, if my 3D printer smoke detector goes off it kills power to them.
you don't really hear about 3d printer fires these days
They've had a decade to work those kinks out
maybe in a print farm but that is likely due to someone not checking the machine before starting a print and leaving for the day lol
The early fires were due to stupid crap like poor quality counterfeit XJ-60 connectors or wires being tinned before being put into screw terminals or bad firmware that lacked any 'I'm putting power in but it's not getting hotter' logic
My Ender 3 had all those issues
not mine
I have one of the early ones from 2018
They got that stuff sorted pretty quickly
Mine also had the low quality motor drivers that made it sound like a group of electric razors were constantly running
lol
@tidal bronzeyou should see if you can get your hands on one of these for like a weekend. https://hagerty-media-prod.imgix.net/2021/08/03_Countach-Driving_Preston-Rose-Hagerty-Drivers-Foundation.jpg?auto=format%2Ccompress&ixlib=php-3.3.0
i'll come out there if you can. I wouldn't mind making the trip to vegas in one of those
its a countach lp400
Looks very uncomfortable
41 minutes and 2 glasses of Vs this. No thank you
as I said a million times.. california is nothing like it use to be lol
@tidal bronzedon't you want to get out of the car like this? dosen't it look exciting? haha https://youtube.com/shorts/5LxtF8quMek?si=nl04mNmUcj6YaoSI
Exactly my point.... LMAO
no fun at all
just remember when you watch this...
Even the latest model sucks
You don't think that's naïve?
LLMs don't actually see individual letters, they break words down into chunks that aren't strictly per-letter
Sure, but that only means they struggle with exactly these types of scenarios. It's not a good showcase that they fail at basic logic
They suck at auto-completing logical answers lol
I think Google said that LLMs weren't so good if you care about "accuracy" 🙂
Trying to find things LLMs suck at ignores all the things they're good at there was no prior alternative for.
is chatgpt really at the forfront of ai?
The question is if they can have "logic" at all or not. If they can, then I can't see why they wouldn't surpass us quite quickly
Most of what I've seen seems to suggest that LLM's do infact train some logic into their "reasoning". To understand the next token you need to understand the underlying problem
OpenAI just released footage of their new model, GPT-4o, and its pretty spooky. Times are a changing people. Buckle up.

follow me on instagram!: https://www.instagram.com/oohgust/
follow me on twitter!: https://twitter.com/oohgust
my gaming channel: https://www.youtube.com/@ducktheaugu...
And every single paper or podcast that I've watched from the experts in the field seems to agree with that. Unless I come across Yann LeCun
There are models that are passing 'theory of mind' tests requiring them to figure out the perspective of another participant
It has the confidence and lack of awareness of a 5-year old 🙂
It's pretty clear they're doing actual logic at this point, it's just a race to refine the processes that the logic results from.
No need to bring my daughter into this
He could have meant you too
But like semantic word logic
Can you expand on that?
I'm at least at a prepubescent level thank you, constantly horny and in opposition
tmi
Yw
Semantic relationships between words allow it to reach a logical conclusion because of limited remaining choices
sounds about right
That's all you think these are capable off?
Ars had a great article on the inner workings recently
Got a link handy?
Thanks
Yea but that could also be all that human memory and recollection is
We just have a bigger working memory than any LLM by far
It's more of like a showcase of what AI could do
There is much more fundamental work required to get natural AI
chatgpt is a showcase of what's achievable at consumer scale.
OpenAI is one of the best funded so it's probably right up there
chatgpt is a nice showcase of what happens if you just throw money at the problem
it's only one mistake from self aware right lol
Is that a criticism? Because clearly for now money is what matters
What do you mean by true AI?
Current AI would be one of like hundreds of systems that'd interconnect to make AGI
anything that resembles the kind of intelligence we see in nature
I expect it would start small
think of a mouse
We have things like worms mapped out and 'emulated'
Nothing on the scale of a mouse though
Most intelligence in nature is exceedingly dumb though, isn't it? It's only just us and a few other species that can do any meaningful general intelligence
The concept of intelligence is too poorly defined
You can find people that'll argue if dogs can think or not
That's not how I view it
and we keep redefining it every time the AI overtakes it
But it's too much to explain here on discord, if you really want to study it I recommend looking up the lectures of Karl Friston
I 100% believe that is the way forward
dolphins to rule the world
but it's exceptionally difficult, computationally and mathematically
First time I hear of Karl so I'll put him on my radar
It's too abstract to quantify, which, imo, makes it a marketing term and not a meaningful term.
Mushrooms to the rescue
Marketing, yep, progress!
sounds tasty
Gotta get some fuzzy logic in the mix
That's actually a good description of ChatGPT, marketing for VC funders
You don't think it will actually change anything?
I think in the end it'll be a small part of a very large system.
I think the interest it's generated in AI is going to do more to further AI than ChatGPT itself
ai coming to take away your jobs!
wonder how many work from home people are scared lol
I'm not particularly scared of AI taking my job. I do foresee my job having more AI management in it though.
I'm absolutely fucked by AI, but it is what it is
I mean that's possible but neither the money or the experts seem to disagree. It's a strong position to take
Technology has been obsoleting and creating jobs since the dawn of humanity. There's been multiple massive shifts in technology in living memory. I think people will be fine.
I'm not saying it won't be fine, but it will be probably the biggest change since the Internet and we should prepare for it
future generations will be harder workers than previous? that sounds like a stretch lol
I'm not sure how you got that from what I said. Every generation should optimally work less than the previous.
But that goes against capitalist ideals.
currently there are job openings in every profession that requires someone to get off thier ass and those are not being filled because of means of making money while sitting on it
once ai takes those ass sitting jobs away..
either future generations will have to learn to work harder than previous or we be in trouble
There will be tons of skilled workers with free time and no tasks to create new ventures, things like taxes on AIs are likely, the world will correct for it.
I'd argue that the issue around skilled workers is more of a cultural issue in the US than a financial issue, anyways. Too many people think every job needs to suck and try to make it happen for everyone they work with.
As in skilled tradesmen
And it's just easier to avoid working with crappy people in a structured office environment, there's more effective systems for removing those people.
we gonna turn into the Kree from Marvels
with our ai overlord
just imagine how many jobs ai will quickly snatch up.. any data entry like IRS or any of that will be gobbled up
That shit was gone to computers ages ago
He's a neuroscientist who invented fMRI. And he is now working on natural AI
But more the foundation of it not the implementation
Data entry hasn't been a career choice in forever
its still a human job for most places
hell we haven't even got our history backed up yet fully
Data entry for things like forms and documents at any scale has had automation available for a long time
eh not the same as ai
tax people use it but again, it's still a human that is behind the wheel
tax site are mostly automated but again. there is still a human at play
Sounds very interesting and I will check it out. I generally just see a lot of people who are against it from what I feel like comes more from their values point of view
There's always a human at some point, when they're handling tens of thousands of peoples' documents a day is the human really at the wheel for each?
once ai is capable of replacing the "job meeting" and phone calls to clients etc
I mean holy hell
most the jobs where someone sitting at a computer is only currently saved by the human interaction portions of it
call centers
I think that either greatly downplays the human contribution or greatly over-estimates what AIs are doing
those are still humans
Are they?
Shells of former humans at best
not as many humans as it use to be but yes, still are humans lol
I started at my current place in the call center
Most of my job was linking people to help desk articles
it's still a human doing a job.. even if you were bad at it lol jk
I was the team lead for the third shift call center crew for a while. That was a group of characters.
even amazon still employyes tons of workers even tho most of the internal work is done by robots but most of those human ran jobs can already now be gobbled up by ai
all the way up to deliveries lol
have one human ceo in a sea of ai lol
People need to rise up and seize the means of production from the CEOs before that.
Capitalism just doesn't work in a world without demand for labor.
Not necessarily. Afaik it's a limiting factor right now though
You're going to have substantiate that somehow
Sorry against what?
was always so comical about those articles and movies scene that insinuated that robot replaced jobs would fill human needed jobs with repairing the robots but they never showcased how the sheer amount of jobs replaced by robots only ever opening up a fraction of the amount of jobs for humans are repairmen lol
AI generally or more of the idea that they can overtake human intelligence. Like as if there's something special about us
His statement implied the majority of WFH jobs were in danger of being automated away, I think that that either downplays the human contribution or over-estimates what AIs are capable of, especially in regards to things like knowing what's really true or not or having consistent judgment.
but the job itself doesn't need all of that extra complexation
What job? What complexity?
idk about other peoples' jobs but a small part of my job is human interaction
An AI could do all that and I'd still have more than enough work to have a job
right but as i said before.. that part can be replaced by ai at some point
most likely will
idk, the human interaction for my job is basically limited to understanding the tasks assigned to me
and you don't think an ai will be able to do that?
To go to my meetings for me?
like i said above
Or to do my full job ?
its only a matter of time but they are working on that lol
Meetings without the rest of my job is useless, the rest of my job is directed by the meetings, even if an AI took my meetings for me I'd basically have to have a meeting with the AI afterwards to get filled in.
right now that human interaction is your jobs security but that won't always be the case
communication between humans is not some barrier that cannot be breached
It's also not the barrier to an AI doing my job
job meetings won't even exsist once those jobs are replaced
the only thing they need to figure out is how to get an ai to handle talking to humans and doing what is relayed to it
The question is in what jobs the AI will be less efficient than a human. Right now, I'm clearly more useful than ChatGPT, but it's been literally two years since we even learned about these existing. I'm completely fucked but I think as a society we can fix that
well fast food places are replacing the person who takes the order with ai right now lol
what happend to that burger joint we saw a glimpse off a few years ago where the cook was ai with a robotic arm?
Anything customer related is fucked
in the end landscapers and some tradeskills like plumbers will be all that's left lol
and a shit ton of ai repairmen lmao
I welcome AI removing shitty fast food jobs, then maybe society can quit pretending they're a valid career and the people who work them are meaningfully employed.
robotic repairmen i mean..
The experts in the scene seem to think they are done in the next five years. It's absolutely wild
AI is going to screw over tradesmen, too. A bulk of a master tradesman's value comes from their ability to do schematics and drawings, when an AI can take a photo and shit out a schematic.
the problem will be how the economy handles the transition. we're already suffering from one massive transition
we're gonna switch over, go broke and then everything shuts down
and back to sweeping the streets with brooms
Which someone is going to have to verify
I went to a Wendys a few months ago and got some guy in a call center at the call box
There's always a UBI but there's absolutely no way we'll agree on that by the time it's necessary. I don't think us two will
no shit?
Is that a thing in other places? I don't go to fast food a lot but I've always talked to a person in the actual building I was at before.
I haven't been active as much the last month or so, I probably missed it
AI chatbots using ChatGPT tech are now taking fast-food drive-through orders across the country at chains like Hardees, Del Taco and Checkers. Made by a company named Presto, AI in drive-throughs uses automatic speech recognition to convert an order into text so the AI system can understand it.
WSJ’s Joanna Stern put the tech through a series o...

I meant I was talking to some Indian guy in a call center on the other side of the world, not that I was talking to an AI
Not sure, that was the only time I've been to Wendys in years.
fast food is a great place for teenagers entering the work force to experince and learn how working is
replacing it all with ai will cost us in the end
you wait and see
"Here, child, learn how to be a slave. It's for your own good."
that is not how that is
and if you view it as such.. your perception is so screwed lol
Wait, no... That's not how it works
Anyways, those jobs are increasingly going to people who are treating them as careers and not summer gigs before college.
those jobs are going to ai because right now noone is filling those jobs
I seriously blame tiktok, youtube
too many people wanting to make bank by doing nothing or something stupid easy and don't want to even want to think about working a real job
even I got to see the whole "professional gamer" thing come to light from that not even being a thing
professional gamer makes as much sense as professional football player
all those kids who threw away their lives trying to make money in something that either never actually happened or blew out
You say that like they try being a youtuber for three years, fail, then that's it, their lives are over
its not just 3 years.. i have a friend who knows someone who has been trying to do it for almost 15 and counting
he dosen't work, he just mooches off his parents etc
and yes.. going for years on end never actually having a job does impact your life
impacts your resume, impacts your credit and everything
credit is a joke, 'I tried following my passion and failed and now need a real job' isn't a resume killer
the person who is task to hire someone is required to pick the dude who has worked for more time than the one who hasn't
I think we are incredibly special. The brain runs on so little power yet it is capable of such complex tasks. Natural AI will have to be as efficient if it is to ever thrive in the wild
dude.. i mean person
There's a lot that goes into a hiring decision beyond workforce experience, and every industry has entry-level positions.
if you think writing down "failed trying to follow my passions for x amount of years" counts.. you are mistaken
If you think people hiring for entry level positions care you are mistaken
every industry has entry level positions
Or you go to school and get a degree and get a job like that
That kind of hubris will be our downfall. Sure we might be superior on efficiency right now but that doesn't seem to matter much
yes we will always need someone to scrub toliets.. but ye who has failed to achieve thier passions really going to take such a job?
no
and they will continue to waste away
Not just superior. In another galaxy. The type of AI you see now is just throwing computation at the problem. The motto seems to be "if I have seen the world then I can reason about the world", but that's not at all what intelligent lifeforms in nature are doing. They learn by exploring, trial and error, they form expectations and adjust if they are in error
in a galaxy far far away..
Surely you see if you get that wrong, you get it very wrong? There's a possibility that's it's not just about compute but literally every expert says that it is
self aware, conscious ai will literally just be one mistake away lol
and then it's capabilities will grow exponentially
hopefully it dosen't have internet access when that happens
I'm not even sure that's the case, but people like Eliezer Yudkowsky make a great case
Get what wrong exactly?
I dont think it's about bigger models or more GPU's. That's going to stagnate (is already)
That if you underestimate the issue you end up being left behind, but if you overestimate the chance what the other side is capable off, you're completely fucked
Ah. The type of AI i am talking about is mostly academic still. Which is where the type of AI you now see in commercial deployment was about 30 years ago. All in due time
You don't think there's a realistic chance that these AIs will take over in the next two years then?
two years? I doubt even that
10 years.. they will be all over
but still lesser roles
Take over what exactly? I think a lot of companies will go flat on their face when they figure out this type of AI fails in the real world in some spectacular ways
And that they need a nuclear power plant to power it
in 10 years @prisma briar will actually start to be afraid of losing his job lol
Nah. But learn to use it as a tool. Because that's what it is at this stage
Still won't be afraid then
its better for you to see the future coming rather than be blind sided by it
FUD.
But that's too easy. Let's call out those who will fuck it up and why
my friend in jersey is WFH for an online gambling company. he use to do the geofencing stuff but now he's doing something with coding or something and he's even starting to get a little twitchy with how ai might just up and replace him out of the blue
The companies claiming they can replace developers
All going bankrupt
That's a pretty hot take and they might be right
if I was younger I would want to be more optimistic about it for my own sake but I'm not. short of the thing nuking us i am kind of curious to see just how bad it can get lol
Bring on the Anarchy, natural selection at its best
If you were younger you'd be just like me. Obviously praising the tech
I am young, I am studying this stuff at uni, and I think we should be more realistic about what this type of AI can really do for us
Fascinating
@forest edge I can deal with strawberries with one R 😋
why you posting the stock of a company that does most it's work in taiwan?
Most?
well they were planing to expand to china. not sure if they had already or not
I am sure those countries are proud
just putting this out there.
While US companies pay federal corporate income taxes levied at 21% or (8.84% in California where Nvidia is based), tax breaks expanded by the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act as well as the CARES Act enacted in 2020 meant 55 big corporations in the US paid nothing in corporate taxes that year. Instead of paying a collective total of $8.5 billion, they received $3.5 billion in tax rebates, amounting to $12 billion in corporate tax breaks. Nvidia is a beneficiary of these two laws.
wouldn't want ya thinking anything that isn't true lol
Blame Danny's
ironically it plays a big role why you citizens pay out the ass in taxes lmao
All for love
ok you modern hippie
That's it, I'm paying my taxes in $LOVE
make sure you post the video of you attempting that
Why attempt? Love comes naturally
That moment when sawzall pvc blade breaks.
Weird the tool didn't come with a BAC threshold 🤣
how do you break a blade?
you shouldn't even be using a sawzall. they make pvc cutters that go up to 3" lol
Couldn't locate my ratcheting cutter
Welp, it's been few hours since I find it hard to locate myself
Tomorrow it is then.
why put off till tomorrow what you can completely mess up and destroy today?
Don’t we have an AI for that yet?
Couldn't miss the omakase reservation made 2 months ago 😆
wtf is that? sounds like one of those "happy ending" you might request after am massage
and you reserved that for two months?
Good places are usually 2 to 6 months out.
"happy endings" are just that good huh?
I see why you are confused. You guys don't have that kinda eateries where you live 🤣
I am sure that we do just not something listed lol
we have those ritz country club places
Not on tock
20-75$ is $$$ how far does that scale go? 😂 $$$$$$?
like i said, likely something not listed lol
That's $$ . Wait listed are usually 325 to 750 a person.
your screenshot has 3 $ signs for it^^
Depends on location
I thought it was just for bay area that food is stupid expensive
Now if it had been good 😂
SF got some great places if you can get a reservation
I'm gonna be there again in September
probably spend a couple days in SF, unless I'm busy and stay in MTV
all that money and I bet anything this is what he recieves https://youtu.be/AM7k8wFdM_Y?si=gzhgsUPqATNJTjpN
Aphotic, Nari and if you can make the drive French Laundry
Nari looks good 👍
French Laundy would be the best 3* experience this side of the country.
Plus, you can expense it as 'laundry'
is the 3 star where the waiter walks like a penguin while wearing a penguin suit or is that 4 star?
Best one ever. 🤣🤣
Some. But most 3 stars would have a dedicated person per guest. 2 and 3 star difference is mainly service.
do they hold the fork and feed you?
5 stars they hold the fork
6 stars they chew and baby bird the food to you
You don't even want to know what happens at 7 stars
Intubation. Matches the price ladder
So basically human fois gras?
Is this why the scram at chernobyl went wrong?
It does actually look a lot like a control rod

Well, we was both a wise man and a well known time traveler
Not if you go with @clear ferry
Because its not ESP HOME ISNT IT!!!
Anything under 2TB RAM is junk for him
between a couple megabytes for MCUs and a couple TB
esphome with 2TB?? that would be memory leak save
and with 128 dimm's using 16gb sticks
But with a 2TB mem and a memory leak of 1 mb a minute still gives you 4 years before a crash.
1992 called
pots or isdn?
Then you download more RAM. Not so hard
4096 dimms, 512MB, DDR
you can only download swap. and that is very slow.
I download more RAM all the time. I'm on 24E9 RAM now.

does anyone know why if i connect my external hard drive to my phone nothing shows up on my phone, but the light of the external drive blinks, and if i connect it to my laptop i can see the files and everything?
it may not power up properly, be an unsupported file system or the os doesnt know what to do of that drive
likely not supplying enough power to the drive. is enough to make the led light up but not for the drive to initialize
@tidal bronzei'm just now getting around to updating my dewalt tools from the old 12v/18v to this new 20v/60v and the kit I bought that has the drill and impact in it came with a $100 gift card for this site https://us.nakedwines.com/
can you believe this horseshit?

I love that it lets you select other just to then deny you access
I have no idea why my wifi does that, but that doesn't seem good does it
That happens, it's RF. If you don't notice anything in latency or speed I wouldn't worry about it
I think more like too many tuya
transitivity = broken
Forget the tools, get that wine.
What APs
the cheapest decos
doing normal stuff works just fine but anything that relies on udp is yoinky
I am not sure what decos are. RSSI swing looks wonky as well.
decos = TP-Link mesh
Oh ok.
Supposedly not bad little devices, but TP-Link keeps putting out crap firmware updates that seem to toast them from time to time.
Never tried them so got no clue.
Me either. I had a chat with someone recently that had them and finally ditched them for Eeros. I'm not sure that's a step up, but whatever works I guess?
Which reminds me... I need to upgrade 2 out of my 3 APs soon lol
I've been thinking of going 6 as well then again 90% of the devices are 2.4
Yeah, same... But I was thinking about going with the 7 just so I don't have to upgrade them for at least a few years. My UAP-AC-Pro is starting to show it's age finally.
I run unifi, 6 APs average 145 wifi devices. Not perfect by any means. But shit works.
lol same, but only 3 APs and 105 wifi devices. Def not perfect, but I can't really complain (except for a weird DHCP issue I have with the AC-Pro).
that and an app only setup
My issue is outdoor esps, very rarely they would have 0 tx/rx. Then again I need to add 2 more APs to the backyard. So can't blame unifi. I ran the direct burial cat6 sometime ago. Didn't get the chance to install the APs
but they were cheap with less than 30 bucks a node
sadly im out of money to upgrade to some netgear stuff
Netgear?
yea they have better™️ mesh systems from what i heard
sadly also the subscription shit but at least no cloud+app only setup
Why mesh? No ETH runs?
not enough
Why would you want to drown the backhaul channel, might as well use it for devices.
two of those nodes are in places where there is an eth backhaul available, but the third doesnt
also i cant really use more generics aps as they kinda suck look wise
dont really enjoy dish sized spaceships on my walls
I have IW and Ceiling. I do prefer IW
the skill points have been put on concrete walls and not on network infrastructure xD
Concrete, wowza
23 years been doing this home automation RF crap, I would still rate 1. zw 2. Wifi 3. Zigbee
Zw yet to disappoint me 😀
what you dont have fiber connected iot devices??
Never had the need. I do have end points all over but in love with zw
thats what someone who spent too much money on wine would say
Come to think of it most my triggers are wifi, action zw and sub second response. Can't turn a light on faster than that. 😆
I had a BAD experience with zw years ago and went full in on zigbee devices. Plus, the price differences (at the time) made a lot of my decisions for me. Then I started moving more and more to WiFi. I think I have 9 zw devices compared to 102 zb and 105 wifi now.
It's different for everyone. I have gone through about 5 to 600 zw devices. I leave them as regular switches when I rent the place. Out of all those I think 2 or 3 devices failed. This house I think 140 some zw, 130 wifi and about 60 zigbee
I basically switch out everything thing to zw, even outlets before moving in.
wifi iot devices are super reliable but they congest your shit like none other lol
Not when you have an enterprise-class network 😉
don't make me call in the expert @atx...
lmfao! I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO GO THERE!
The 1883 fiber dude?
In Norway the flush handle is connected to valve via fiber.
he is never in here when he gets brought up anymore lol
Perhaps since they are now smaller than Nvidia?
Come on now, show some respect. Where's the fiber?
@forest edge so got my plumbing project done. By the time I remembered to get the blade from HD was too late to drive. Lol. Dremel saw blade to the rescue.
"Register for Fusion 360 for personal use". And then it asks for "work phone"...
lmao.. when all else fails.. a hot butter knife is your lowest point right?
I didn't know fusion had a free side
It wad free for years
oh I must have glossed over that the last time I looked
Used it daily, welp, back in the day.
speaking of which.. do I need to resnd my address?
Yup, fusion was great as a free product... then they got greedy.
Sadly yes.
No ju ju bees for you.
curious how the bambu suite is compared to the other stuff these days
They don't make it straight forward to find.
Here's a question, do you guys think esp devices will run for 10+ years?
Flawlessly like zw?
I think it's Russian roulette based on some esp devices in some products I have had that's failed within 5 years
Eh, I have some ESP devices that are going on like 6 years now with no f/w updates or anything... they keep on chugging, but I think it really depends on the board itself.
But mostly it's all my esp-8266 boards. Those things are like little tanks.
Mine too. I think the oldest I have is buried somewhere near the pool. Been running 5+ years. I am afraid to even dig up that stuff. Lol.
And I have some old Sonoff first gen in-line switches that I flashed to esphome years ago that are still going as well.
And those things... lol they spend 11 months of the year either baking in the attic (or freezing some years) and they just keep on going. Same!!! I don't want to ever touch them until they die.
Yep 1st gen sonoff still going strong
I've actually been thinking about seeing if I can still find the 1st gens... maybe ebay? 🤔
All my subs were running on 1st gen sonoff. Now they are on web power switches
web power switches?
huh... you're giving me ideas...
Built in MQTT.
Almost all my devices are connected to one of those. With or without HA power cycle is a breeze. Since I travel a lot I need a backup plan for everything 😀
I assume you also have the kill switch/blow up the house/destroy all the evidence fallback in case you're discovered...
I wish. What about the gun safe?
Gotta do the Better Call Saul strategy of buying the house next door and digging a tunnel
Doubles as a wine cellar
That's the front
Are you stating these from experience? Lol
I imagine that I'm secretly a super spy...Or am I?
what in tarnation
Easy tiger.
the thing is almost 200 bucks
why would you need something like that?
hell the outlets aren't even oriented right for maxmium wall wart capacity lol
They were never made for barns. Keep calm
those things weren't made for anything
can't even picture a commercial application lol
it does looks weird. i will give you that. guest be like, "wtf is that?" you be like.. "Oh wait till you see my new toy!"
I can kind of see the rack mounted variation
We have more industrial versions of those for bouncing devices in a lab
Typically called PDUs
I use single outlet smart plugs for various things but can't imagine what to use a strip for
come on down. i think you'll like the entertainment lol https://youtube.com/shorts/F1Bfqpm-X9U?si=vlLcjaawpGYH6IGd
The van race where you are required to hit the jump at least once a race!
they cant park there
I have one of the 3-outlet TP Link Kasa power strips that controls my dumb outdoor lights.
One set of festoon lights, one string of fairy lights, and an IR floodlight.
Easier than having multiple single-outlet plugs, since all those things are plugged in at a single location
your using an indoor power strip outside?
I get the outside lighting stuff. I use a KP400 for xmas lights
Rollin with Sienna eh?
Where's that 680hp Astro?
No, it's under the house in the crawl space
All low-voltage lights, and none of their transformers are outdoor-rated either
Probably could have gone with mains voltage lights for the most recent install, but didn't see any real reason to
Thursday nights right after baby buggy bumper cars
I can roll with that
Here I thought I can go for a 24hr fast and wife wants adana kebab 🤔
Story of my life.
can confirm. prices in california are just shy of alaskan prices

Looking for suggestions for a non cloud thermo stat.
I love eco bee but I hate how HASS only operates via cloud.
I hate that I can only get motion on HK.
Been looking at honey well systems so I can use dampeners in my ducks for zoning purposes. But when I look on integrations I see that honey well has a cloud symbol just like ecobee.
Goal is to localize thermostat control.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
#hardware-archived might be able to help
dumb thermostats are the future
I don't even have a sensor on the inside of our house 🤣
Well, we have an external sensor and then TRVs
To be specific
It's one of the smart things I don't get why it exists. You set it to a comfortable temperature like -once- and then it automatically turns the heat on or off as there be demand
But then they can sell you new rgb trvs, with and app!
tbf, the one thing I use smart thermostats for is to turn on/off when a door or window is left open. I keep the temp pretty much static all the time, but if it's nice out and I open the windows, I want the heat/ac to turn off.
Everyone loves rgb and extra apps
And cloud services
I agree 100% btw, some things don't need to be smart, it just needs to work
The outdoor sensor just sets the water temp, roughly, idea is that you didn't always have trvs, but our house gets too warm otherwise
lol @ rgb trvs... like, why?!
I have yet to insulate the loft properly, but I run it as an underfloor heating curve, otherwise all the trvs just all close 🤣
That sounds like it could be a valid use case for an AC if you forget to close the windows for hours
