is that a pocket door?
I have no idea what that is
slides in instead of swings
all that wood looks alike.. makes it hard to seperate it out
oh weird.. in that first picture it looks like the door is only a few inches wide and dosen't cover the whole doorway lol
ah i see now
pocket door so you know what they are. https://images.adsttc.com/media/images/6520/52dd/96de/ff4c/aed5/adad/original/pt-maximizing-space-and-style-through-sliding-pocket-doors_25.gif?1696617193
I haven't seen one of those in at least 20 years, in my grandmothers house from the 60s
they have thier uses
how would YOU know? Hmm?
those tails... or ball sacks? 🤣

lol
Odd raccoons
@last cedar https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/1cn0y84/aios_with_screens_are_so_unnecessary/
That raccoon is vibbin
this is the only use for these screens i can understand
a hamster on a wheel would be funny also
as the CPU % ramps up the hamster runs faster
Just slap one of those fan LED projector screens on there
Did someone say tanuki
get your ears checked old man
Mine are mixed. Usually magnet on the door and sensor stationary, but I swapped that on a couple because it was cleaner to mount that way.
Storms huh?
We got slammed by those storms... My yard is a mess and the drive home from work SUCKED.
I coordinated a lunch with other parents of children receiving special education services at the school and the principal that happened today, we had a special speaker come talk about reducing stress and self care. It went great. 😌
Well. First. Reducing stress IS self care, so make sure you use them interchangeably.
3 easy things you can do, as long as you are intentional with your goal
- Regular exercising - walking 10 minutes a day is sufficient for this.
- Mindfulness or guided meditation - 10 minutes of this a day will significantly help reduce stress, and guided meditation helps you focus.
- Do what brings you 🌈 J O Y 🌈 - I go touch grass to bring me joy, something about being one with the earth that grounds you.
And you can merge them. I run daily... that's my exercise, my joy, and my mindfulness, in a single activity 🎉
Garden work is my exercise! Joy and a good full body workout.
There’s a lot more you can do, but these 3 are often the easiest ones to start. The hard part is creating the habit of making that time for yourself.
Mine too.
do sand gardens count?
Sand works

but thats not a mile in difference
I used freedom units to make it more understandable
Wonder if they are using WLED🤔
there are days where I wake up in the winter and the sky looks like this
only happens when its cloudy though
I think my favorite stress reliever is a good bike ride. This one was pretty fun
Just realized that doesn't show the mile markers lol. 4 mi / 6.4 km one way
Got a question for any fellow developers, completely unrelated to HA. I manage several apps that share a codebase and I try to keep the version numbers consistent, so a major change that would affect all other targets would update a major number. Currently they're on 1.6.x. But I'm migrating a legacy app into this codebase and its version number is 2.0.6, so I would have to update all the others to 2.1.x even though they didn't go through a significant update.
My question is, do I continue with this scheme or just change to the more modern 2024.x.x style?

Ugh. Once, just once, I'd like to do my 3-yearly forklift certification on a day that isn't freezing cold, in a location that isn't a drafty warehouse
I think there was hail at one point
I call your touching grass and raise you two cats 🐈 🐈⬛
That cat is huge!!! lol
lol he’s(?) cute. Huge cat. Are you feeding him steroids or something?
hahaha that’s awesome.
nah he's just a big cat.. not fat just like generally longer and a bit bigger than other cats
my mom found him outside a grandy's and the employees were feeding him sausage and stuff
and he had a messed up eye.. so we called him lucky cuz he was lucky he found us
i had to give him drops every 3 hours and the vet said he might lose his eye but nope he's 100% normal just a goofball
lol a well earned name. I have a dog that I named Potato (her real name is Gypsy). She looks like a potato. Tiny little head, big body.
My other dog was like that when she was a puppy. Got her at 1 year old and she got the dog flu. She lost 7 pounds and almost died. Vet said to just put her down, but she survived it.
Ya you gotta try
Yup. She is such a pain in the ass now though. lol
It’s like “I know I cheated death, so now I’m going to be an entitled jerk” lol
i have an old cat that hates one of my younger cats and i swear she will outlive everyone else just out of spite
and she's otherwise a super sweet cat lol
they're just wild
Hahaha yup. That EXACTLY. My Jack Russel is going to outlive me for sure.
This is my oversized derp:
I have 3 animals in this house. Jack, our one brain cell orange tabby; Monsieur, a literal alley cat my sister caught; Pearl, our German Shepard with severe anxiety.
Turns out our cat is actually a chicken

haah cool
i need some help
i need to create a video demonstrating the tech behind a smart dustbin which segregates waste automatically using image recognition
can anybody help?
what exactly do you need help with?
Wait. You mean I can't hire assistants here?
I thought that came with running this show?
I mean, if you pay enough, I'll be your assistant
you're the overlord, you don't hire people, you command them to do your bidding
I'm intrigued by making a video of my dustbin 🤔
Yeah, what's the payrate? I'll do assistant-like things if the pay is right.
Oh, excellent.
You know, breakdowns of how things work can be fascinating if done right. Like this: https://ciechanow.ski/mechanical-watch/
Bartosz is frigging amazing with his articles. The effort he puts into the animations (which are often interactive) is so impressive.
cool
yea wonder how long that took to put together
it has gravity physics
Yeah, the simulations are amazing. He has a few others too. The one about 'how bicycles work' sounds like it'd be really basic... it's not 😄
After reading that, I learned that to turn left on a bicycle, first you must turn right... and that you don't even realise you're doing it.
just had a automated litter box company compare their product to the boxer engine and the bmw b58 in response to a comment i made. not sure if I should reply with how that was a poor choice or just leave it alone lol
I have so many questions... automated litter box company???
yea was a newer company posting their ad on youtube but it was a rake style litter box
so I shared some insight
lmao I can't even imagine how that comparison happened in the first place.
There's an integration for one of them in HA.
it was a response to this
it's 2024, if you are still willing to purchase a rake style litter box with lots of complex movable parts you deserve all the headaches coming your way.
lmao and they came back with an engine comparison?!
yea and a really bad one at that
both of those engines have costly issues
Hi mate, if you purchase our product, feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns you may have. No product is perfect, just like Subaru's horizontally opposed four-cylinder engines or BMW's B58 engine. They're not perfect, but they're beautiful in their own right. What do you think?
think i'm gonna leave it alone
Well, at least they didn't mention the Mini/BMW N14 engine... credit where credit's due. lol
Lots of good reasons! You can see when it's full and needs to be emptied, how often it cleans can help you track your cat's patterns and help identify if they have any urinary problems, and some people just want everything in one thing to control.
It's a $600 litter box, though...
I haz no cats... even if my dogs are the same size as cats.
horrible creatures i suggest you stay clear
When I was growing up, my mom was a "cat lady"... after growing up with that, I swore I would never have another cat ever.
odd.. usually when you grow up with cats you yourself become one cat person
I am, and I found it on sale, I think. I was looking at one a month or so ago, lmao. 😅
When you have 30-50 cats around you 24x7, you learn to NOT choose that path for yourself. 😉
uh lol
sounds like a rescue hobby
omg so my grandma bred cats - my mom would only ever let us have 1 cat in the house at any time.

My mom fancied herself a "breeder" and so we ALWAYS had a shit ton load of cats EVERYWHERE.
<imagines some Highlander -style sword fight if another cat enters>
watching mechanical repair videos made in india make you both cringe and be a little impressed at the same time
Went to eat left over pizza, only to discover my family left a single slice in the box.

Well, with your allergies, at least it didn't have like 1 tiny piece of pineapple on it as well. lol
I remember when we did that with sweets, so we didn't have to remove the packaging D:
I am grateful that my family works hard to make sure I don't die.
It's almost like they like having you around... sooooo weird! lol
What is left over pizza?
Probably an American thing
When you finished the hamburgers, and now you have only the pizza left
It's what happens when you let your stomach shrink so much that you can't eat like a regular American.

They should be fired
Urban dictionary has a couple interesting definitions for jib D:
Oh man this phrase is like super old, rofl. .....honestly probably 100 years old.
old person
Because I'm a geek like that... The phrase actually originated in the 1800s. 😉
one of the parents picked up their kids in a cyber truck. first time seeing one in person.. that thing is way too small to be called a truck lol
Hey, at least I didn't assume it was from the 50s or something. 🤣
should have called it cyber el camino
lol fair... although, they did have some interesting sayings in the 50s too.
They really did.
Sometimes we watch classic Looney Tunes and they say some weird things in there that just go over our heads. Not super often, but it does happen.
Little did we know just how socially incorrect all those old cartoons were... we turned out fine though, right? RIGHT?!
its a sailing term right?
Yeah
jib is a sail
It originally referred to the nationality of the ship by the way the jib sail was cut.
sounds right to me
TIL
Jib Couture
All I'm hearing is the alternative interpretation that someone once floated to me, which is "I'm pleased to see you aren't French"

My guess would be Eurowings
As in drive to restaurants, loose a sake battle with wife, leave the car and uber home, weird? Yep.
yea sounds like something that could just be done at home with less risk of having your wallet taken lol
not so sure about that
Wallet? Is that still a thing?
not everyone wants to have some google pay or whatever chip implanted in their wrist
unless you are saying you carry a purse?
Quoting atx "not carried a wallet since 2012, January 13th" lmao.
It's European!!!
so id etc you just stuff in your undies? or do you use a fanny pack? lol
This sucks, now I have to take her shopping in Uber. Why did I start drinking at 10AM.
must be a lot of ubers there lol
yea being drunk and "shopping" would suck

Time to skew Uber wait times. 😆

Nicely done. Ledfx driving ddp?
my shitty python script driving tasmota 🤣
That’s actually pretty badass. I played around with ledfx a bit, but ended up flooding my network out doing it. Fun times.
it was fun to make. i guess it's not shitty, but it's also not smart at all because you have to enter a BPM for it to use lol
but it works and it chooses each light and color at random, so there's that

StackOverflow is a joke of a site anyways. Any question that needs an answer more advanced than can be copied from a text book gets shut down under any of a half-dozen different absurd labels.
I'd take a relevant programming ebook over StackOverflow any day personally
Im looking for feedback from the hass community to see if there is interest in getting access to hard button remotes and other hardware through the URC Total Control platform that has a hass integration and will continue to be hass friendly in the future. I have posted in the forum. Please let me know if this is something that sounds interesting. Thanks. https://community.home-assistant.io/t/integration-with-urc-total-control/727921
Hello All, I am an engineer with URC (Universal Remote Control). I have developed an integration to fully integration our Total Control line of products, specifically our remotes and keypads with hass. Im looking to see if there would be any interest from the hass community to have access to our hardware. Basically the integration pulls in all...
All training an AI on StackOverflow is going to do is make a crappy skiddy LLM
True... just reminds me of the Reddit API wars... People are too kneejerk now a days.
This is true. I rarely use SO/SE at all anymore. Kinda sad as it was such a good resource back in the day...
It fell victim to it's own curation
They ended up curating out any question that wasn't low hanging fruit
There will always be interest by some for expand capabilities with other ecosystems to work with HA. that is just a safe default assumption to make. Even if there was HA specific URC products to make a profit they would sell because some already or will have that ecosystem
Its already available through our portal for free to all the current URC Total Control dealers. I was just wondering if I should try and find a way to make it accessible to the hass community without needing to go through an authorized dealer who would be required to then do the install and programming.
I think you already know the answer to that lol
Requiring an authorized dealer to program something basic like a home control panel is wildly anti-consumer
You should discontinue that practice
its hard to get a real good gauge of what people want in this project because for every one person who actively participates in the forums or on here etc, there is so much more that use HA without really ever checking the forums for anything other than what they are specifically trying to find an answer for
Home Assistant people spend a lot of time shopping around and notice shady crap like requiring authorized dealers for things
I think you are completely misunderstanding our place in the industry.
Our dealers provide a service and do installs for people who either dont have time, knowledge, or any interest in doing their own automation install and programming.
So? That doesn't require them to use an authorized dealer
There's no justification for that
It's like Tesla saying you need to go to them for repairs
At the end of the day requiring your service people to make changes is only there to pad your bottom line
And having worked with such systems at an enterprise level it's really annoying.
Our systems are not DIY level. So it requires an authorized dealer who has been properly trained to deploy the system.
Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system.
this is refering to control 4?
If your ecosystem is so half-baked that it needs a professional installer to avoid pitfalls and issues it's not going to go over well in the hobbyist community
or something diff
Our system is in the same market as Control 4
nm @tidal bronze brought up the URC control not that long ago, he seemed interested in it
Those convinced against their will will be of the same opinion still. I keep this in mind so I never argue with people on the internet. Netham you are welcome to your opinion. Im not going to try and change your mind.
i'll never be able to get that fancy so I don't know what the systems are that are out there lol
Okay, I'm going to continue thinking you're an anti-consumer company with a shoddy ecosystem.
@prisma briaryou realize he's just a cog in the clock asking if he should make it so HA people can bypass the whole thing you are complaining about right?
Yea, and I suggested he should discontinue that practice, then he started arguing about market position and ecosystems and crap
Literally the thing he asked about I provided my opinion on then he started trying to justify and defend it
I don't think what I said is invalid either, most DIYers will see 'professional install required' on most of the companies products and look elsewhere.
And selling exclusively through dealers is wildly anti-consumer
there will always be products made to target specific consumers that want what those products are more designed for. it's not like the existence of them hinders diy'ers in any way
No, I'm not saying they should shut down or anything, I'm just pointing out that if they want to target a DIY hobbyist audience that stuff won't fly.
Which, if you notice, was what his original question was all about.
idk why he even asked for feedback if he couldn't handle feedback
considering we still see people inquire about using HA as their product for the same kind of system he is referring to. the lines are a little muddy lol
paying someone to professionally install a HA system and to maintain it is no different even if all the hardware is non proprietary
That's very different
how?
Namely you can fire the installer and find another or do it yourself
I have no problem with providing professional services to someone who wants to pay. Requiring professional services for some bullshit like “we want to control the experience” is some bullshit. And telling an HA user of all people that they need to control the experience is laughable.
there are multiple authorized dealers.. so..
the do it yourself is the only thing you lack, but who pays for that and wants to do it themself lol
confused lumberjack noises
Man, you live in the middle of the US. You know well enough that there's going to be giant areas of the country with only one installer, if even that.
I think it's the fact that there ARE others that make the diffrence
Outside of things that are far more dangerous than home automation there's no justification for authorized-only dealers.
They're useless middle-men being forced in to artifically raise the price of a commodity.
those kind of ecosystems are not going away no matter what. there are TONS of people who would rather go that route than any form of DIY.. at least spin was trying to give access to others. I think that is what to focus on
That's fine for them. If they want to operate like that they probably shouldn't come to an HA server asking what HA people want, though.
To be clear, this is what @spin said that triggered my response:
Our systems are not DIY level. So it requires an authorized dealer who has been properly trained to deploy the system.
Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system.
If they want to offer their service, great. If they want to require their service, GTFO.
More for their sake than being unwelcoming
This is just bad optics for their company
Apple does the exact same thing but on an exponential scale. And yet most Americans buy their stuff. Most people just dont care
his whole thing was to bypass those parts you have issues with.. thats why I don't get the hositility
TBH, if I provide software support, I want hardware to at least be QAd by someone I trust
Doesn't quite fit the HA community though
everything anyone does to expand the abilities of HA is a good thing no matter what.. is it not?
am i missing something?
not like his addition is going to force those who want nothing to do with it to ever have to deal with any part of it
Depends on the reading for control for me
If it's QA/QC I'm on board. If it's invasive to the usage then not
You're missing that he asked for what peoples opinions' are going to be
And this is people giving him their opinion
And in return he argued
which he read and moved on
No, he read then argued then decided to leave when he realized that he was arguing a losing fight.
There are two threads of conversation here:
- Q: Should they make the integration freely available? A: Resounding yes.
- Q: Should they require a dealer to perform 100% of system installations? A: No, and please don't give some condescending nonsense like "Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system."
condescending nonsense like "Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system."
Except some people want that. Some people want to hand over a stack of cash in exchange for something that 'just works'.
the wording was to pull HA into thier system, not the other way around so it makes sense that a system already designed or whatever they call it that needs a professional to deal with, would have to do that part of for HA
If that's the market they're targeting, that's fine. If you're not their target market, you can safely move on and ignore them.
He wasn't asking for those peoples' opinions, he was here asking for the average hobbyist's opinion
Let those people purchase the professional services. Nobody is saying they should not offer them.
Again, he asked for opinions.
Yes, I saw. And none of us know that they didn't seek opinions elsewhere from other market segments.
How does that even matter?
I don't care what other fictious peoples' opinions are, he was here asking for opinions here.
Then when he got an opinion he didn't like he spewed a bunch of marketing bullshit and left.
Because y'all seem incapable of accepting that there are other views than your own. 🤷 I don't get why people are even arguing about it still.
You don't seem to even know what was being discussed
And yet you're trying to argue too
getting a little too hostile up in here for me. I got some mowing to do. i'm out
Sounds great as long as there's end user access to purchase the hardware. With Harmony EOL much opportunity out there.
For several years, I felt like URC remotes (like the 980) were the most customizable remotes on the (reasonably affordable) market, especially with their RF support. The dealer gatekeeping was off-putting, but I was able to find one who let me purchase the hardware and software to set it up myself. It was great, even if the software was a little clunky
Agreed, greet product. Used to integrate them back in the day. Yep, the dealer stuff makes little sense in 2024
when I couldn't find a dealer to play ball a few years ago when I wanted to upgrade, I moved to a different product
i loathe parasitic draw
i had an AC dealer rant to me about how diy mini splits should be illegal
and wouldnt even tell me the fricken list prices of the stuff they sold
lol could you imagine how much freon would have been let out over the years if ac units weren't generally installed professionally
I peeked at their site after our conversation today and wow. "Find a dealer" requires filling out a form, so good luck finding two to compete with each other. https://www.urc-automation.com/find-a-dealer/. But if you want to find a not dealer, here you go: https://www.urc-automation.com/legal/internet-sales-policy/
Yeah, I'm aware. Like I said, 'off-putting', and generally user-hostile
But clear, so I just went elsewhere
This is where licensing is valuable. Key difference is the source of the requirement. For example, when I had a new AC put in 2 years ago I went with a contractor who offered more than one vendor's equipment. Choice of licensed contractor and choice of equipment to get to a competitive bit.
- bid
most offer more than one brand don't they?
funny thing about whole home hvac.. there is only like 3 major companies. it's like appliances where the same crap is sold with slightly different components under a different brands name at a price difference. good ole monopoly
Yes, and I did get bids from one contractor with a choice of brands. Not the one I picked ultimately, but the point you're making remains.
Yeah, figuring out where a bid was for the same manufacturer with different nameplates was a thing too.

i vaguely remember going out to look at the last one we got in early 2000's but I do not remember actually seeing anything
They seem allergic to reversable pumps too
I couldn't find one around here who would even consider installing a reversable system, my only choice was DIY.
I have seen people get stuck in the door. Doesnt hurt you but it's just so stupid
what do you mean by reversible
the inground system i think is what he is talking about
we have installers for those systems here
Just one that can heat/cool
The installers around me were offering base-level cooling-only systems at like 2x markup
The systems were so crappy I wouldn't even have been eligible for a tax break on them
house a few streets down from me had that system installed. no idea what the cost was
thats litterally the only kind ive ever seen for mini split
They also wouldn't do a mini-split, they wanted to repair my central air exchanger
more profit in that i guess
The three places I called just didn't do minisplits
should contact a contractor rather than a hvac company
my neightbour got a roofing quote. the looked at the house, said all the osb needed to be replaced and the trusses were damaged, and it was $9000 or something mental for 800sft of roof..... house has no osb, or trusses, and was in mint shape.
It was going to be like 8-10k to have the central air repaired since it'd require pulling the furnace out, and they wanted the electrical inspected
shit is scary lol
Roofing companies are a scam
thats so weird. prettymuch everything is minisplits here the last 5 years
At least the ones that go door to door
idk, it all seemed really backwards to me.
yeah, trying to find a mark
Everything I got offered was like 14 seer 3 ton garbage
plenty of videos online showcasing homes in the south that regretted going mini split over central air
idk, one guy tried telling me that the air was too thin at altitude for anything more efficent to work
between the home needing to be really good insultaed and how many units you made need with sqft
I have three minisplit heads around my house
what altitude? maybes thats true, have not heard of that
Like 6000'/1800m
fireplace during winter, open window in summer
thats it? thats not even high
Yea, I dismissed that as BS
Outside of the work I just won't do like sewer work I've always had better luck doing work myself over calling somebody in
quick google says you need to dertate the units as altitude increased, but were talking like 30% at 10000ft
nothing meaningful
i dot everything, but theres some jobs i wish i had money to not do 😛
liiike, digging a trench for plumbing in rock
actually its not even the rock right now, its fricken maple tree roots
i need to buy an excavator one day
buy used for 25k. keep 3-4 years til im done. sell for 25k.
And even if you're derating it a percentage a 24 seer unit is going to be better than a 14 seer unit
The sewer work I had needed city permits to have my hookup redone, plus it was a huge mess in a cramped area.
I was pretty glad to pay somebody else to fix that, lol
My house was built with cast iron pipes in the 70s, the main one out to the sewer broke on me
While i'm pretty sure that's not what happened
The mental image of them casting the entire pipe system into the house at once amuses me
Like the tin models of ant's nests
lol
It was probably actually extruded and machined, but it was iron either way
idk, it was really messed up when I saw it.
They had a team fixing it and it still took them two days
Then they had to hang around for half a day waiting for an inspector
cast iron under a home can last forever
where it protrudes through the slab tho is a diffrent story
I'm not sure what damaged it. It was messed up when we moved in.
I didn't realize at all how badly though.
The home inspector I had look over the place when I moved in was a joke.
years ago the city had a program that would pay up to 3k for a backflow valve to be put in outside and part of that was to help pay for the replacement of the clay pipe to the main connection. they required my internal pipe to be endoscoped for any damage
mine turned out to be pretty good for being over 40 years old at the time
My parents had to get theirs replaced while I was still living there, the house shifted and broke the pipe at the foundation
Happened to most of the houses on the block
where you live that actually dosen't surprise me
Gave your house a colonoscopy, eh?
pretty much
There's a ton of clay in the soil here, foundation issues are really common
anywhere there can be hard freeze thaw hard freeze thaw will have foundation issues
That too
with global warming we don't get that here as much as we used too lol
It froze here last week
I went and walked my dog around a lake at 5 AM that day, that was pretty nice.
surprised many homes in colorado aren't built on like stilts to a degree
they do that in alaska
My current house is on jacks, my parents' had a poured concrete foundation
Last house I rented was concrete too
i wonder if they bring dirt/clay in to line a certian padding around those foundations first
I imagine they do something.
The house across the street from us had their foundation mudjacked up
So what did they find in your internal pipe?
thankfully nothing but the guy said sometimes they can find stuff sushi eaters crave
House needs a probiotic
Lol. What about the pre
Maybe sone fiber
psyllium husk
most likely continuous cast. no mold, just flows out and is sprayed with water to harden the shell
Getting ready for some Japanese egg salad sandwich
"100% plant based" is an interesting claim on a bread. Yeast is not a plant.
Not an animal either, but that's not the claim. The claim is 100% plant.
As long as it's low carb, tastes better than any regular sourdough, I am in
NorCal here, you can expect me to be a snob about sourdough
We have 92% chance of seeing it

boo
That happened to me when we went on holiday to Iceland back in 2017.
Either got clear sky with 1/9 or 2/9 on the Aurora forecast, or 7/9 with heavy cloud.
Then on our 2nd-to-last night, 8/9 forecast, clear sky... and a full moon so we couldn't see shit.
you can't even eat normal egg salad? for shame!
that sucks. think the drive in the nvr in the barn died lol
It's not normal It's better. Anything is better with Kewpie Mayo.
Kewpie 🥰
I don't like regular mayo even a little bit, but Kewpie can get in my face hole at any opportunity
@forest edge you should try a Tomago Sando. Life changing.
thats just decrusted toast
Goog picture. I don't do white bread 😆
lol, indeed. looks like mom cut off the crust
it tastes better like that
Everyone knows the best crustless sandwiches are cut on the diagonal though.
Gotta have the two triangles
I have to agree with the triangle cut.
do you go for the two or four triangle version
2 always.

Unless it's a ribbon sandwich

1762 England, nothing to do with star spangled banner.
dont lie, english people never ate something fun ever

"Non-brewed condiment": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=642x2Y3Zla0
"Non-brewed condiment" is what they call it: it's chemically very similar to proper vinegar, a mixture of ethanoic acid, colourings and flavourings, but it's put together by just combining simple chemicals rather than brewing. Hardly anyone knows, and those that do know don't generally care; so here's my question. Does it matter?
Thanks to Matt...
I agree mostly bland food but nothing beats an English breakfast with blood sausage
It's funny actually, living in a commonwealth country we have our local adaptations to "fish and chips", and having tried the authentic British version, blergh
the dish itself is horrific but acceptable
no idea how youd be like yep this neutral taste food needs to taste absolutely horrible
Also if you want a slightly strange read about a NZ foodstuff: https://thespinoff.co.nz/society/20-02-2017/finding-rosemary-in-search-of-the-unsung-hero-who-invented-kiwi-onion-dip
While sour cream based dips for potato chips are common in most places, we've got a local version with a different (shelf-stable, canned) dairy product you pretty much don't find elsewhere in the world, which is mixed with malt vinegar and powdered instant onion soup to make dip.
Nestle (I know, I know) attempted to discontinue it once, to such an uproar it feels like they probably won't try to be that stupid again any time soon.
that plate $250? lol
I don't think so. $6 or $7
They are available in any Japanese store.
TBH I don't know the price. So I could be wrong. I never ask or check prices on food.
oh wait you don't pay by cash.. you just have them scan the implant in your wrist
so you and your wife both just get the "women's menu" :). Who needs prices?

Landed on our deck about a metre away from me, strutted about for a bit, then slid down the stair rail and flew off. Little show-off

All Righ...

everyone in canada farted at the same time
Stunning! We had cloud cover.....
Normally we get cloud cover problems, this is a first for me.
I hope to get to see them properly at some point!
It's clear here tonight, sadly no view to the south from our place but with the size of this solar storm that might be unnecessary.
Also here at ~41°S things have to be really cranking to see anything, but it's far from unheard of
I am slightly south of Stockholm, in terms of degrees above the equator, I should be able to see it quite often, if it wasn't for the damn clouds!
hopefully it will be still be up there tonight
Probably 746% cloud tonight if there is still high activity 🤣
Looking out my back door
Norway?
No this looks like the USA
Stunning, none the less!
Tasmania.
Omg I was so close when I said Norway
@last cedar https://displate.com/displate/4407290 did you make this?
The fluffy cheeks match
Yeah only about 13,000Km off (if you dig straight down). 🤣
Close, but not really
I love r/shitamericanssay
I so want to go grammar police on that post... MUST RESIST! 🤣
The grammar sucks, sure. But that's not the craziest part about them.
Some Americans and their weird ideas of heritage and identity smh my head
lmao!!! 100% (and I say that as an American).
But you're presumable one of the sane(r) ones.
It's just so weird that someone whose family hasn't even set foot in a country for generations clings so tightly so something and builds their identity around it. No, you're not Irish.
Psh... you just don't know me yet... sane and me are not good bedfellows lol
And thanks for introducing me to that sub. I particularly like the post where an American claims to have invented Halloween 😂
I'm third generation Irish/Russian, My grandfather immigrated from Ireland back in the 30s and his wife from Russia in the mid 40s. People ask me "what I am" and I usually just say I'm American. I still have family in Ireland, but I'm no more Irish than I am a Martian.
I remember my mother looked into our family tree and found out we have some Scandinavian heritage. I don't gaf about that. I'm just English.
Like, it's cool that we're all a mix, but it doesn't define us. Our upbringing affects our identity way more than a few genes do.

It's just like those people that claim they can drink a lot because they are [insert nationality here]. Ugh... no, you can drink "a lot" (but usually not) due to your genetics. Has shit to do with where your family is from. MAYBE environmental factors play in too, but zip to do with nationality.
lmao @summer mesa
Yeah, genetics is a factor here. Don't a lot of Asian folk have what basically amounts to an alcohol allergy? Not all of them though - so you can't even claim it's a nationality thing. It's just more prevalent in some places.
I'm always very suspicious when people start attributing things to genetics. It really is rarely a dominant factor, and it feels like a horrible slippery slope from there to outright racism.
I think the one time I can somewhat accept the "I'm X" arguments is when it's at a community level. Like how NYC historically had such an Italian influence, which still shows now.
I have a one word rebuttal: Sake lol (kidding though)... I've never heard of an allergy like that. I might have to change my opinion.
This is what I'm referring to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_flush_reaction
Yes, there is a specific alcohol response which is somewhat correlated with east asian ancestry: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2659709
snap
Huh... TIL.
Around 30–50% of East Asians carry the rs671 (ALDH2*2) allele on chromosome 12, which results in a less functional acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme, responsible for the breakdown of acetaldehyde, and accounts for most incidents of alcohol flush reaction worldwide.
Most certainly can be attributed to genetics. But it's still wrong to extend that to any kind of stereotype.
holy crap that is a fascinating read... Thanks guys!
Genetics is amazing. And it's great that thanks to the modern scientific process (of challenging what we think we know), we've realised that it's not just about the genes you inherit... it's about whether they even get triggered to express their properties. Epigenetics is fantastic.
Also, things like eye colour. People always believed that you inherit the relevant genes from each parent, and the dominant one wins. But that doesn't explain situations where you can have an eye colour which can't be explained by your parents, and doesn't explain the change in eye colour during your lifetime.
Researchers used to think that eye color was determined by a single gene and followed a simple inheritance pattern in which brown eyes were dominant to blue eyes. Under this model, it was believed that parents who both had blue eyes could not have a child with brown eyes. However, later studies showed that this model was too simplistic. Although it is uncommon, parents with blue eyes can have children with brown eyes. The inheritance of eye color is more complex than originally suspected because multiple genes are involved. While a child’s eye color can often be predicted by the eye colors of his or her parents and other relatives, genetic variations sometimes produce unexpected results.
https://medlineplus.gov/genetics/understanding/traits/eyecolor/#:~:text=Eye color is determined by,front layers of the iris.
I think there is definitely some truth to it. We adapt to our environment, we always have

Summer already? 😁
lol and here in the Eastern US, there's not been snow on the mountains for months now...
I mean... atx lives inside the Arctic circle 😂
Is it just me or does LPCAMM2 look like it just exists to drive new memory kit sales?
Like this just looks like it adds significant complexity which will make swapping memory significantly more difficult
Eh? Isn't one of the main selling points that it's easier? It's a screw-in module instead of the soldered-on crap that's become way too common of late.
Well the sodimm variant is a tool less clip in design
Noice. That's where they keep one of the Stargates, right?
Two actually
So this now needs tools and has a more complex socket which people need to be careful around
I must be totally missing the point of it
If you're comparing to the toolless ones, it's worse... but soldering has become way too common now. Over that, it's a clear improvement.
And needing to be careful around the socket? Anyone that opens the case of a device should do so at their own risk. If they mess up pins, that's on them.
There was nothing really to mess up with the old design
Wonder if it's about bandwidth tho that shouldn't really be a socket issue...
If the price for LPCAMM2 and SODIMM modules are the same, or within 5%, i see absolutely no issue with it.
Ontop of using less volume inside a machine, it optimizes the electrical layout of the connection from the CPU -> RAM by a lot, improving stability of faster RAM modules.
hm maybe that will become useful with next the generation of memory
prices currently seem to be about the same as the sodimm modules
tho now i wonder
From what i've seen, one can expect at least 20% higher speeds.
the name lpcamm2 suggests that a non low profile version exists
ah yes, Lieutenant Manager
too bad it does not translate well from german to english
yes
No
Nein?
Nee!
i dont know if this is a term but i have a crippling home assistant addiction and ikea is my remedy since they sell very cheap smart home stuff
Any Eurovision predictions here?
Joost
From a convo I saw in another discord I'm half expecting a riot because Joost got disqualified
Dutch can't handle an L 🙂
Lol, the people I saw complaining were all Dutch.
You mean the swedes

Is it anyone who been testing a bit unbias on whats the best to run on a wall dashboard? I have a couple of generic andorid 11 15.5" tabs with POE. They are just ok so not super much processing power RK3566 w 2GB ram). I have been looking a bit at the KIOSK app, but many is complinaing its a resource hog. Best would be to run the native client, but again quite power hungry? and at least many say the wallpanel.xyz is the least resource usage. I have two things I am trying to figure out 1. How to run HA lightest possible and 2. possibility to control the tab via MQTT (execute commands like screen, alerts, reboots, and get all system resources out so I can see what is booging down things). Any thouhts?
does it even matter how many resources are being used? like its not having to serve a secondary purpose while being connected to power all the time anyway
controlling the device i think should be possible through adb features if i recall correctly
I was thinking so that I know if its enough for usage. I am planning to work with some companies to bring homelab and home assistant tools to the public at a great rate, but I am trying stuff out so I can stand behind them. But for that I need real data
personally i wouldnt worry too much about the performance of something that displays what effectively is a web page
but for the device selection itself, it may be more important that it comes without a battery. saves money weight and a potential cause of failure
true. its not meant to be super fast, but it need to be responsive when you click a button. For those purposes fully kiosk or native HA app could be best as it provide more data
the tab I am testing now I an get at around 150USD with 16inch display and POE, but I think personally it could benefit of 4-8gb ram and a big faster CPU. The cost difference is not extreme
from what I know lovelace renders a lot on client side, so its a bit more load than usual, but yeah ofc thats why I want to test all options 🙂
I hate Unity. It's super borked left and right and somehow stuff that can be tested locally will fail to build
I went into yesterday’s yard work with a slightly tight lower back, but listened to my body as I worked. I woke up this morning and my back is feeling pretty good.
As the RN who helped me through my back surgery said, MOTION IS THE LOTION.
Or we've just never asked them...
Didn't we learn anything from the dolphins?
You assume we learn things.
lol
as with the dolphins, you may learn things you don't like
blissful ignorance
Why ask the dolphins? They're only the second most intelligent species on Earth.
First being ravens you mean?
I know where that's from
I thought the chimpanzees were the ones running experiments on us
Close
oh wait I actually thought it was hitchhikers guide
It is 😄
oh
The mice were that ones that were ||running an Earth-sized simulation to figure out the answer||.
But I prefer the dolphins because they ||at least tried to warn us that the Earth was about to be demolished||
wow yeah, I forgot a lot of it but remember like arthur dent and some of the ships. There was this spaceship with an improbability drive where if it calculated how improbably something was it literally made fuel/ propulsion for itself
Yes, the Heart of Gold.
My 10yo son wrote me a poem for (US) Mother’s Day!!
ChatGPT is a hell of a tool 😉
lol he has absolutely no access to that.
10 and dosen't have a cell phone? that is shocking lol
Unlike a lot of other parents, I control a lot of his internet access still.
Correct, no phone. An iPad but it’s locked down.
good for you, pretty sure all this internet access is why the general overall IQ is dropping between every generation
The hand nearly hands like hands do
He has some computer access but most websites are inaccessible.
I never remember how vectors work
but it hasn't
So I worked for Xbox support and that taught me quick how smart children are when their parents are not tech savvy. Which is A LOT more than you’d expect lol.
not the first time we had this discussion in here, plenty of proof has been submitted @primal laurel
They get clever with their workarounds.
thats no diffrent than children knowing how to work the VCR etc
you have submitted zero proof
our young minds are sponges with way better eyes
I mean, that doesn’t negate my point?
lets just drop this here for everyone's sake cause the second I go back and link to the past discussion this is gonna end up being a mod thing lol
Also knowing a VCR is a little less complicated than understanding how networking works…
nah absolutely not going to let you make this ridiculous comment every time
where is the proof?
do remember how ridiculous it was to program an old-school VCR??
No because my dad did all that. 🤣
hey dont knock it!! i earned money off my family and neighbours knowing how to use a VHS
it was peak engineer-design and well before anybody cared about the humans who need to use the device
and the stakes were high - you could miss your show and never be able to see it again!
one of the worst things i have ever seen was by Motorola - one of theirr phones had this "massive" 99 entry phonebook!
the prroblem was....it was not linked to the dialer 😉
u could not dial anyone out of the phonebook - I had post it notes stuck inside the battery flap
lol
funny how true that was
And now all those shows are somewhere on YouTube.
I have never figured out who uploads them, why, or where they get them. The answer no doubt is somehow profit.
And this brings us to today's sponsor: NordVPN!
The beach is an all-you-can-eat buffet for the Roomba
I tried to get AI to generate the famous tribble scene but with roombas
Didn't work, but the result is interesting
At least the solar storm gives us some pretty colors before it destroys us all.
I find it annoying that everyone assumes every call is made from a cell phone anymore. as if landlines don't exsist
it's not just from general businesses either i have had medical offices do the same which is really dangerous imo
landlines? Is this the 90s 😂
Though what assumption about phones do they make that doesn't work on landlines? 🤔
texting
you talk to someone, they assume your on a cell and then they try texting you later and there is no kickback letting the person know the text didn't go through
Huh, my parent's landline supported SMS. though I don't know if it's builtin to DECT or something proprietary
Never tried to write any from it though. But receiving worked
These days everything's VOIP here either way, and the local router would have it in the web interface
with the exception of at&t landlines here are voip as well. but still no sms ability i am aware of
it was never free here but it was very cheap
Here they tend to bundle it with the internet service which isn't really legal but they still do it
I think it's 3 number included and additional ones are pretty much free
I just don't want to bother with migrating a number
And have no use for a number that makes it harder to reach me
because nobody uses it
could be fun to play with SIP and a VPN to use it from my phone while I travel though 🤔
Even if you don't intend to call a lot of people
It's a great device to have in an emergency
physical buttons, a defined location where to find it
I used to have a landline in my last house that I just had forwarded to my cellphone. Then I decided that was silly 🙂
last time my grandparents used it was something like 15 years ago. Now that's saying something lol
if I used my landline number, I'd just use the app though D:
way too lazy to setup a DECT phone
My parents still use theirs because that number has been in use for 2 decades
And it's a 4 digit one^^
I kinda use mine for most things as it's effectively free calling to most businesses
is for me 🤷
though mostly because I just use the corp number that has EU wide free calling
I wonder if you still have to sign up for long-distance service on a landline ...
Well yes there are contracts that allow that, but realistically it makes no sense that this isn't the norm
yea, with VOIP everywhere they should really stop pretending that calling and SMS should be billed
that's one giant mindset change moving to cellphones - nobody cares what area code you're using or where you're calling
Like you already pay for the access and a data cap
No data cap either 🎉
Those contracts sadly tend to be scams around here
Like it's either capped to a daily limit or if you actually use it to large extends they simply terminate the contract
yea, it's the top spec Vodafone corp volume contract^^
no way im going to use a corp phone to do anything personal
Using your own devices to do corpo stuff is far worse id think
this is crazy easy and done automatically by the service to switch too
🤷 I'm fine with using a phone that has a corp profile
The only thing the OS allows control over outside the corp profile is the full device wipe
i've had the same landline number hosted by like 3 diffrent providers my whole life
still requires me to know it and tell them 🤷
to know your own number?
Without one, how do you guys even send a fax to your gov
Oh wait that's a German thing

I never sent a Fax D:
yea
it's an additional fee, yes
even for voip
which is dumb lol
Yes the manual switching labor of fiber
gotta point that flashlight at the right direction
Feels like a junk fee that they can only charge until the government calls them on their bullshit
i'm not so sure that is the case. the last time I had swapped my modem out they screwed up my phone part and I had to talk to a completely separate department to get that fixed and the dude was telling me there was all kinds of government restrictions when it came to the phone
I don't know what is bs and what isn't but it would make some sense for the government to use a fee as a means of gathering a list of what locations can make international calls etc
Just be like me, get work to pay for phone and laptop, don't run any corp software on any of them and treat both as personal devices
And that is the reason why I'm never doing MDM, random guy in Bangalore hits the wrong button and wipes my whole phone
🤷 pracitce a proper backup routine and it doesn't matter
We do hardware attestation and onboarding with USB HSM
Though I could write code in the phone if I chose to do so
I've seen people program python on an ipad on a plane
Without an external keyboard

and not get sick?
i can't even read an article on my phone while in the passenger seat of a car for very long
I've literally read dozens of books on my phone
while moving?
reading small print while moving is the only time i get motion sickness
It probably relates to how used you are to it
you not watch that british video i posted a week back about how us going from state to state is the same as you going from country to country?
Guilty... I use Working Copy a lot on my phone and iPad all the time. lol
who knows.. i may have actually traveled further than you if it was broken down lol
As someone who doesn't get motion sick, it drives me nuts when my passenger is unable to help navigate because they can't read anything. I mean, I get it, but it's frustrating
Probably not, I've travelled 7800km just the last two weeks
in 2024? i didn't think people still bought gas station maps
I just yell "hey Google, drive to XYZ"
I didn't say "gas station maps". Google searches, other stuff better done with map apps on the phone
it's certainly gotten better with car integration, but it's still helpful for non-drivers to be able to look for things when in an unfamiliar area
Yes, my wife is an excellent co pilot
i think motion sickness is hard to escape with age
Especially when driving abroad
I jut wish more doctors would tell us about the "hard switches" that occur at certian ages when we were still younger
Can't say I've met one yet
Unhelpful front seaters are better than those that comment on your driving
There kinda is nothing worse than this
well, then you get to comment on their walking 😉

Say hello to GPT-4o, our new flagship model which can reason across audio, vision, and text in real time: http://openai.com/index/hello-gpt-4o/
Text and image input rolling out today in API and ChatGPT with voice and video in the coming weeks.
Some of the demos showcasing how it works in realtime are quite impressive
Do what I do... find a really twisty road, drive it really fast and never give them the opportunity to do anything but scream and hold on to the "oh shit" bar. Works every time 😄
It's much less scary on front wheel drive cars
There ain't a whole lot that can go wrong
You haven't driven with me. lol
true. But there's always a large difference between tech demos and the real world (remember Devin)
I tend to have zero fear when I drive AND I push my front wheel drive to the limit.
what does that mean? front wheel drive to the limit?
just below it breaking off and driving away itself?
I chew through tires at an alarming rate. lol
Typical cars get what, 20K miles+ per set of tires? I typically go 7K-10K during spring and summer lol
front wheel drive cars are scary especially with ABS
the front heats up faster and more and will tend make braking even harder
I typically turn my traction control off. Can't control ABS though 😦
That's what drilled and slotted rotors are for
Along with "true" ceramic pads.
Plus, I rarely actually use my brakes... I'll use engine braking first unless I absolutely need to use my brakes.
I miss having a stick shift specifically for this sometimes.
As an educated mechanic, this is technically what you are supposed to do. In theory, you wouldn't be following too close to someone to need to slam on your brakes. In practice...well....you know.
That usually applies. But not when you are driving in a Mini group. Because of where we normally drive where there's a lot of blind curves and such, you want to be close enough to the car in front of you so that you don't lose sight of it around a curve. So, most of us that are very experienced will typically be about a 1-3 feet behind the car in front of us... think of it like drafting.
margin of error: zero
I pull it off with an automatic in "manual" mode. Mini specifically designed the transmissions and ECUs to allow for a more "stick shift" like experience.
The ONLY thing that sucks is that I can't drop into 2nd gear if I'm above 48mph.
I drive in 3rd in my automatic if I am in the city (2500-3000rpm is optimum fuel usage) and up into Drive when on the highway. My husband rarely does the same. 🤣
Our traction control light recently came on too and I am like psh whatever like I need you anyway.....
lol yeah... I've had passengers who scream at me when I'm pulling 7500RPM in 2nd gear around a curve. I just sort of laugh at them.
One of the first things I do in any new car is read up on the power curves of the engine so I can understand what the most fun RPM range is
Things get more complex with a turbo, since they don't usually account for that
(or put a Stage1/Stage2 in it just to really have fun with it)
I haven't yet fully explored sport mode in my new car
Ugh... BMW's docs on the twin tubro B48 engines are a JOKE. No explanation of power ramps or anything.
What did you get?
I had that light pop on in my last car in the always in the same places and the car manual basically said "maybe you should slow down??"
The XC90 with its hybrid design is actually quite rubbish in winter when it comes to sleet, I was driving up a windy mountain and had to turn off traction control to get around corners safely, 320bhp in front and 90bhp in the rear doesn't really cooperate properly, even if it is really good at winter, but sleet up this mountain was not great
F that... lol go faster and power out of the curve... hahaha
Skoda Superb estate
197 hp TDi
Even in non sport mode it's got quite a lot of go, as I've accidentally found a few times
Ooohhhh that's pretty!
On the B48?
7.3 on the superb it seems
Would have expected less since it is quite light actually
Psh... they're all going in a straight line!
Although, love the Gen2s though... except for the craptastic N14 engines...
I use to like going fast in boxes but then I bought a motorcycle
lol I'm not allowed to have a motorcycle. I've been told in no uncertain terms that I will end up with my face on a milk carton if I do.
road sign you mean lul
Eh, side of a mountain... road sign... take your pick.
My problem is that I would drive it like I drive my Mini
I thought about a motorcycle, then I remember, I stopped being suicidal
bad drivers in norway?
no, it's just statistically a horrid mode of transportation
Yeah, fair.
I wouldn't ride a bike where it's freezing 90% of the time regardless lol
🤣
If I want to feel the wind I'll just roll down the windows of the XC90 and pass you by
in the scenarios where you are not the one doing dumb stuff, motorcycles can actually avoid many accidents pretty easily
some you are sol but with good awareness I have dodged many fender benders lol
i despise the motorbikes in my area - driving slowly down my street all the time revving their engines hard so it angers everyone and scares the pets
one day....there will be a nice puddle of oil and diesel on the road...
pretty sure they call it wonka mobiles not motorbikes https://youtu.be/snB3vmY60Dk?si=7yq9wgdGQ8NQEU8E&t=47

Being diesel slows it down a bit - the petrol version goes a lot faster. Still, can't say I often need to go 0 to 60 ... more 30 to 70
Hah
