in the case of zigbee or any wireless contact sensor it don't matter but normally the magnet goes on the door and the sensor on the frame

solar zealot
#

reducing stress
i need those details

lone dagger
#

Well. First. Reducing stress IS self care, so make sure you use them interchangeably.

#

3 easy things you can do, as long as you are intentional with your goal

  • Regular exercising - walking 10 minutes a day is sufficient for this.
  • Mindfulness or guided meditation - 10 minutes of this a day will significantly help reduce stress, and guided meditation helps you focus.
  • Do what brings you 🌈 J O Y 🌈 - I go touch grass to bring me joy, something about being one with the earth that grounds you.
deft pewter
#

And you can merge them. I run daily... that's my exercise, my joy, and my mindfulness, in a single activity 🎉

lone dagger
#

Garden work is my exercise! Joy and a good full body workout.

#

There’s a lot more you can do, but these 3 are often the easiest ones to start. The hard part is creating the habit of making that time for yourself.

Got a question for any fellow developers, completely unrelated to HA. I manage several apps that share a codebase and I try to keep the version numbers consistent, so a major change that would affect all other targets would update a major number. Currently they're on 1.6.x. But I'm migrating a legacy app into this codebase and its version number is 2.0.6, so I would have to update all the others to 2.1.x even though they didn't go through a significant update.

My question is, do I continue with this scheme or just change to the more modern 2024.x.x style?

Requiring an authorized dealer to program something basic like a home control panel is wildly anti-consumer

#

You should discontinue that practice

forest edge
#

its hard to get a real good gauge of what people want in this project because for every one person who actively participates in the forums or on here etc, there is so much more that use HA without really ever checking the forums for anything other than what they are specifically trying to find an answer for

prisma briar
#

Home Assistant people spend a lot of time shopping around and notice shady crap like requiring authorized dealers for things

civic glade
#

Our dealers provide a service and do installs for people who either dont have time, knowledge, or any interest in doing their own automation install and programming.

prisma briar
#

So? That doesn't require them to use an authorized dealer

#

There's no justification for that

#

It's like Tesla saying you need to go to them for repairs

#

At the end of the day requiring your service people to make changes is only there to pad your bottom line

#

And having worked with such systems at an enterprise level it's really annoying.

civic glade
#

Our systems are not DIY level. So it requires an authorized dealer who has been properly trained to deploy the system.

#

Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system.

forest edge
#

this is refering to control 4?

prisma briar
#

If your ecosystem is so half-baked that it needs a professional installer to avoid pitfalls and issues it's not going to go over well in the hobbyist community

forest edge
#

or something diff

civic glade
#

Our system is in the same market as Control 4

forest edge
#

nm @tidal bronze brought up the URC control not that long ago, he seemed interested in it

civic glade
#

Those convinced against their will will be of the same opinion still. I keep this in mind so I never argue with people on the internet. Netham you are welcome to your opinion. Im not going to try and change your mind.

forest edge
#

i'll never be able to get that fancy so I don't know what the systems are that are out there lol

prisma briar
forest edge
#

@prisma briaryou realize he's just a cog in the clock asking if he should make it so HA people can bypass the whole thing you are complaining about right?

prisma briar
#

Literally the thing he asked about I provided my opinion on then he started trying to justify and defend it

#

I don't think what I said is invalid either, most DIYers will see 'professional install required' on most of the companies products and look elsewhere.

#

And selling exclusively through dealers is wildly anti-consumer

forest edge
#

there will always be products made to target specific consumers that want what those products are more designed for. it's not like the existence of them hinders diy'ers in any way

prisma briar
#

No, I'm not saying they should shut down or anything, I'm just pointing out that if they want to target a DIY hobbyist audience that stuff won't fly.

#

Which, if you notice, was what his original question was all about.

#

idk why he even asked for feedback if he couldn't handle feedback

forest edge
#

considering we still see people inquire about using HA as their product for the same kind of system he is referring to. the lines are a little muddy lol

#

paying someone to professionally install a HA system and to maintain it is no different even if all the hardware is non proprietary

prisma briar
#

That's very different

forest edge
#

how?

prisma briar
#

Namely you can fire the installer and find another or do it yourself

lone dagger
winged obsidian
#

I have no problem with providing professional services to someone who wants to pay. Requiring professional services for some bullshit like “we want to control the experience” is some bullshit. And telling an HA user of all people that they need to control the experience is laughable.

forest edge
#

the do it yourself is the only thing you lack, but who pays for that and wants to do it themself lol

glacial knot
prisma briar
forest edge
prisma briar
#

Outside of things that are far more dangerous than home automation there's no justification for authorized-only dealers.

#

They're useless middle-men being forced in to artifically raise the price of a commodity.

forest edge
#

those kind of ecosystems are not going away no matter what. there are TONS of people who would rather go that route than any form of DIY.. at least spin was trying to give access to others. I think that is what to focus on

prisma briar
#

That's fine for them. If they want to operate like that they probably shouldn't come to an HA server asking what HA people want, though.

forest edge
#

I mean.. that kind of not right lol

#

all should be welcomed..

winged obsidian
#

To be clear, this is what @spin said that triggered my response:

Our systems are not DIY level. So it requires an authorized dealer who has been properly trained to deploy the system.
Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system.

If they want to offer their service, great. If they want to require their service, GTFO.

prisma briar
#

More for their sake than being unwelcoming

#

This is just bad optics for their company

primal laurel
forest edge
#

his whole thing was to bypass those parts you have issues with.. thats why I don't get the hositility

glacial knot
#

TBH, if I provide software support, I want hardware to at least be QAd by someone I trust
Doesn't quite fit the HA community though

forest edge
#

everything anyone does to expand the abilities of HA is a good thing no matter what.. is it not?

#

am i missing something?

#

not like his addition is going to force those who want nothing to do with it to ever have to deal with any part of it

glacial knot
#

Depends on the reading for control for me
If it's QA/QC I'm on board. If it's invasive to the usage then not

prisma briar
#

And this is people giving him their opinion

#

And in return he argued

forest edge
#

which he read and moved on

prisma briar
#

No, he read then argued then decided to leave when he realized that he was arguing a losing fight.

winged obsidian
#

There are two threads of conversation here:

  1. Q: Should they make the integration freely available? A: Resounding yes.
  2. Q: Should they require a dealer to perform 100% of system installations? A: No, and please don't give some condescending nonsense like "Thats how we can control the end user experience. And provide the best possibility that they will be happy with our system."
deft pewter

The sewer work I had needed city permits to have my hookup redone, plus it was a huge mess in a cramped area.

My house was built with cast iron pipes in the 70s, the main one out to the sewer broke on me

Hardly anyone knows, and those that do know don't generally care; so here's my question. Does it matter?

While sour cream based dips for potato chips are common in most places, we've got a local version with a different (shelf-stable, canned) dairy product you pretty much don't find elsewhere in the world, which is mixed with malt vinegar and powdered instant onion soup to make dip.

I'm always very suspicious when people start attributing things to genetics. It really is rarely a dominant factor, and it feels like a horrible slippery slope from there to outright racism.

Around 30–50% of East Asians carry the rs671 (ALDH2*2) allele on chromosome 12, which results in a less functional acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme, responsible for the breakdown of acetaldehyde, and accounts for most incidents of alcohol flush reaction worldwide.
Most certainly can be attributed to genetics. But it's still wrong to extend that to any kind of stereotype.

real frigate
#

holy crap that is a fascinating read... Thanks guys!

deft pewter
#

Genetics is amazing. And it's great that thanks to the modern scientific process (of challenging what we think we know), we've realised that it's not just about the genes you inherit... it's about whether they even get triggered to express their properties. Epigenetics is fantastic.

#

Also, things like eye colour. People always believed that you inherit the relevant genes from each parent, and the dominant one wins. But that doesn't explain situations where you can have an eye colour which can't be explained by your parents, and doesn't explain the change in eye colour during your lifetime.

#

Researchers used to think that eye color was determined by a single gene and followed a simple inheritance pattern in which brown eyes were dominant to blue eyes. Under this model, it was believed that parents who both had blue eyes could not have a child with brown eyes. However, later studies showed that this model was too simplistic. Although it is uncommon, parents with blue eyes can have children with brown eyes. The inheritance of eye color is more complex than originally suspected because multiple genes are involved. While a child’s eye color can often be predicted by the eye colors of his or her parents and other relatives, genetic variations sometimes produce unexpected results.

Is it anyone who been testing a bit unbias on whats the best to run on a wall dashboard? I have a couple of generic andorid 11 15.5" tabs with POE. They are just ok so not super much processing power RK3566 w 2GB ram). I have been looking a bit at the KIOSK app, but many is complinaing its a resource hog. Best would be to run the native client, but again quite power hungry? and at least many say the wallpanel.xyz is the least resource usage. I have two things I am trying to figure out 1. How to run HA lightest possible and 2. possibility to control the tab via MQTT (execute commands like screen, alerts, reboots, and get all system resources out so I can see what is booging down things). Any thouhts?

solar zealot
#

does it even matter how many resources are being used? like its not having to serve a secondary purpose while being connected to power all the time anyway

#

controlling the device i think should be possible through adb features if i recall correctly

late gate
#

I was thinking so that I know if its enough for usage. I am planning to work with some companies to bring homelab and home assistant tools to the public at a great rate, but I am trying stuff out so I can stand behind them. But for that I need real data

solar zealot
#

personally i wouldnt worry too much about the performance of something that displays what effectively is a web page

#

but for the device selection itself, it may be more important that it comes without a battery. saves money weight and a potential cause of failure

late gate
#

true. its not meant to be super fast, but it need to be responsive when you click a button. For those purposes fully kiosk or native HA app could be best as it provide more data

#

the tab I am testing now I an get at around 150USD with 16inch display and POE, but I think personally it could benefit of 4-8gb ram and a big faster CPU. The cost difference is not extreme

The only thing the OS allows control over outside the corp profile is the full device wipe

Without one, how do you guys even send a fax to your gov Giggle

I never sent a Fax D:

i can't even read an article on my phone while in the passenger seat of a car for very long

clear ferry

I've literally read dozens of books on my phone

while moving?

reading small print while moving is the only time i get motion sickness

Yes

In planes, cars, trains, boats

It probably relates to how used you are to it

You are right, Sonomo has been outside his state at least once

you not watch that british video i posted a week back about how us going from state to state is the same as you going from country to country?

As someone who doesn't get motion sick, it drives me nuts when my passenger is unable to help navigate because they can't read anything. I mean, I get it, but it's frustrating

Probably not, I've travelled 7800km just the last two weeks

I just yell "hey Google, drive to XYZ"

static schooner

I didn't say "gas station maps". Google searches, other stuff better done with map apps on the phone

it's certainly gotten better with car integration, but it's still helpful for non-drivers to be able to look for things when in an unfamiliar area

Yes, my wife is an excellent co pilot

i think motion sickness is hard to escape with age

comical

real frigate

Typical cars get what, 20K miles+ per set of tires? I typically go 7K-10K during spring and summer lol

forest edge
#

front wheel drive cars are scary especially with ABS

#

the front heats up faster and more and will tend make braking even harder

real frigate
#

I typically turn my traction control off. Can't control ABS though 😦

#

That's what drilled and slotted rotors are for

Along with "true" ceramic pads.

Plus, I rarely actually use my brakes... I'll use engine braking first unless I absolutely need to use my brakes.

lone dagger

As an educated mechanic, this is technically what you are supposed to do. In theory, you wouldn't be following too close to someone to need to slam on your brakes. In practice...well....you know.

real frigate
# lone dagger As an educated mechanic, this is technically what you are supposed to do. In the...

That usually applies. But not when you are driving in a Mini group. Because of where we normally drive where there's a lot of blind curves and such, you want to be close enough to the car in front of you so that you don't lose sight of it around a curve. So, most of us that are very experienced will typically be about a 1-3 feet behind the car in front of us... think of it like drafting.

margin of error: zero

real frigate

The ONLY thing that sucks is that I can't drop into 2nd gear if I'm above 48mph.

lone dagger
#

I drive in 3rd in my automatic if I am in the city (2500-3000rpm is optimum fuel usage) and up into Drive when on the highway. My husband rarely does the same. 🤣

#

Our traction control light recently came on too and I am like psh whatever like I need you anyway.....

real frigate
#

lol yeah... I've had passengers who scream at me when I'm pulling 7500RPM in 2nd gear around a curve. I just sort of laugh at them.

clever mortar
#

One of the first things I do in any new car is read up on the power curves of the engine so I can understand what the most fun RPM range is

clever mortar

Things get more complex with a turbo, since they don't usually account for that

real frigate

(or put a Stage1/Stage2 in it just to really have fun with it)

I haven't yet fully explored sport mode in my new car

Ugh... BMW's docs on the twin tubro B48 engines are a JOKE. No explanation of power ramps or anything.

The XC90 with its hybrid design is actually quite rubbish in winter when it comes to sleet, I was driving up a windy mountain and had to turn off traction control to get around corners safely, 320bhp in front and 90bhp in the rear doesn't really cooperate properly, even if it is really good at winter, but sleet up this mountain was not great

Even in non sport mode it's got quite a lot of go, as I've accidentally found a few times

7.3 on the superb it seems

Would have expected less since it is quite light actually

Psh... they're all going in a straight line!

Although, love the Gen2s though... except for the craptastic N14 engines...

forest edge

I use to like going fast in boxes but then I bought a motorcycle

real frigate

lol I'm not allowed to have a motorcycle. I've been told in no uncertain terms that I will end up with my face on a milk carton if I do.

road sign you mean lul

real frigate

Eh, side of a mountain... road sign... take your pick.

real frigate

My problem is that I would drive it like I drive my Mini

forest edge
clear ferry

no, it's just statistically a horrid mode of transportation

real frigate

Yeah, fair.

forest edge

I wouldn't ride a bike where it's freezing 90% of the time regardless lol

real frigate

🤣

clear ferry

If I want to feel the wind I'll just roll down the windows of the XC90 and pass you by

forest edge

in the scenarios where you are not the one doing dumb stuff, motorcycles can actually avoid many accidents pretty easily

#

some you are sol but with good awareness I have dodged many fender benders lol

neon hawk

i despise the motorbikes in my area - driving slowly down my street all the time revving their engines hard so it angers everyone and scares the pets
