Don't do whatever the hell you call this insulting an entire island crap
there's prolly about 50 billion in yachts tied up around my island
and this guy thinks we do coconut sephamore
you wearing your cape?
country*
I debated which word to use, tbh
aren't you afraid they are blocking the incoming trash trying to reach your beach?
well that's good.. wouldn't want ya missing out on some upgrades
that's my beach, it's not much but it's mine
well 300ft of it is mine, 150ft in either direction from where I'm standing
where are the coconut trees?
behind me
nice
they don't grow out of the rock
but you can see the pine trees in the distance
which used to be one of the biggest businesses this side of the world at one point
we had the first railroad in the americas to move lumber
more curious if that thing out in the water is a big rock or your next computer
just to the left from straight out
Why are you being a dick? Just to be a dick?
not being a dick.. not in mean sense
he started it
Oh, you're one of those guys who thinks being a dick is being friendly and bonding
It's not.
by saying a nas is cheaper and more efficient than a PC
I dunno how my countries socio-economic status ended up being a point to be made
but here we are
sonomo the kind of person to have never left his own state
he prolly can't find his state on a map of the US
Like, this started as a tech conversation then Sonoma just turned it into insulting KrAzIe for no reason.
this is the typical can't handle backlash response
No, this is the typical response people get when they're being an asshole.
you start out talking shit about what I do with my nas, get some backlash and then call me the dick
sensitive
scroll up and tell me who started this lol
We said we wouldn't trust USB for storage, you carried on insulting a country because we didn't trust USB.
actually I didn't talk shit about what you do with your nas, I just said it's not for me, and I outlined the points of failure (or those I consider to be) and why I don't use it
scroll up and call yourself a liar
and offered my solution that I do use
Just stop being an asshole to everyone all the time
fuck that. you started it
stop being a senstive snowflake
Wind it in folks
now we are being racist
don't start none, won't be none
listen to tink
Yes... you should 😉
Sorry Tink
i'm just gonna @ you the next time one of them starts it lol
get ready for ding ding ding ding ding
I don't think drawing more mod attention to your behavior would work out like you think.
So, I encourage it.
I don't think everyone views everything the same way as you
I don't think anyone views anything the same way as you
@clever mortar halp!
tagging the mod with the don't tag gif...
Have you noticed it's always you Vs everyone else? Perhaps you are the problem?
actually when i remain quiet, you guys end up arguing with each other lol
you think we don't see it, but we do
Shizo much?
Arguing is fine. I have no problems with a good debate
All you do is throw insults
one person's debate is anothers fight
No, all you do is insult people. Honestly, it's a failure of the mods here that you're still here at all.
i return insults.. least get that right
Yea but your idea of us insulting you is us saying USB is flaky
so ... show me where I insulted you to start all this today
this is what I mean. not only are you wrong on what started it.. your idea of what is right or wrong is biased off your own opinion
also show me where the points I made are invalid
So show us what started it
Lol, so you can't
we aren't arguing tho
Because you've realized we didn't start any arguments and it was all you being rude
we are just asking to please point out where we offended you so as to correct future engagements with you
or are we not allowed to disagree at all and should remain mute
it's all fine till someone can't handle it. simple as that
I think you're projecting
That's really a horrible take
trying to be helpful
well because you said "we started it" I'm simply asking you to denote in the chat timeline where it began
When you're regularly pissing off groups of people for no reason you're the problem, not the people you're pissing off.
uh...
You need to go sit under a tree and reflect or something, man
wisdom* experience*
Last chance before everybody gets a time out
stop now
There will be no further warnings
What's your solution for better ethernet than single gbit link? 🤔
Is there something on the enclosure, or would that be an additional cost? IT's already at the all flash one 😮
You can get a b550 board with 2.5Gb onboard or that has a pci-e slot open you could throw a cheap card in
Both just cost more and I was pricing that one out to be as cheap as possible
Just looking to make a box to throw at my parents house to dump backups to
yea, at that point I'm above the pricepoint of the ugreen one 🤷
I only really want it if I can run my own OS though. Gaaah! 😄
I personally don't trust ugreen, nor do I get why a company that large is doing a kickstart
They've sold some junk in the past
Just got a TerraMaster F4-424 today. Easy to run Debian on it, or anything else, and the hardware is pretty solid. Not cheap though, but you get what you pay for...
Their older units are cheaper and also pretty solid - but need a BIOS update to enable you to (easily) run other software apparently
looks loud
yea, Ideally I want 2.5" or NVMe only and then sized for that
I have debian on my buffalo NAS
😄
Pretty silent so far, just the noise of the disks
buffao NAS is admittedly old AF tho, and only supported old smb
The catastrophic collapse of a major bridge in Baltimore has drawn attention to the structural integrity of Bay Area bridges and the potential for a similar incident locally.

called that shit
That QNAP nas is at a good price point but being ARM instead of x86 would kill it for me
heh videos popping up all over from places that have bridges with people questioning on if more money should be invested to better guard the bridge piers
didn't take long at all
How though? A fully loaded cargo ship crashing into a dock will go through 5m of concrete before it stops
The force that boat had in Baltimore was insane
After the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore, Philadelphians are questioning the safety of our city's bridges. Here's a look at the safety measures guarding our region's four DRPA bridges.
they will come up with all kinds of ways they think will work. point being though. now people are seeing $$ and using the fear of the boston bridge to maybe squeeze out some dough to "ease the minds"
cheaper just to better train ship captains and personnel to to prevent the collision in the first place
Cybership when?
From what I've heard it was a mechanical issue and not a training issue
a mechanical issue that may have been diagnosed prior to leaving port
it's always human error no matter how you slice it
I think all we know right now is they lost power and dropped anchor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TlIhoxIxM30 went over how the layout of the channel may have caused them to veer
✩ABOUT THIS VIDEO✩
On 26th March 2024, the container vessel, Dali, hit Baltimore's Key Bridge, leading to its complete collapse. This video is an explanation of what might have happened based on the most recent publicly available information.

that video didn't address the drastic change in direction before the collision
Yea it does
Literally went over how there was a branch off the channel that would have directed water flow down it that they couldn't compensate for without power

boats need to be made of foam. then they cant damage anything
It's just a theory but it's as good as anything else I've heard.
till they release what the crew say it's all going to be opinion
I still think the anchor is what caused the drastic direction change
982ft of foam might
lies
Clearly either the ship or the bridge need airbags 🙂
careful with that talk. tax payers don't need to do deal with that
they need to keep ice bergs around. that will scare the ships away
if we go on average of 0.33lbs/cu ft as the weight of foam, and the length is 982ft we can come to some pretty easy conclusions
Lettuce wilts and turns to mush, unfortunately
just put trolls under the bridges like days of old
not in the water!
especially in the water
dont you know nothn bout vegtubles?
then they get mold
Perhaps we need to dump cherry jello power into the water
RobC a boat that size should have been slowing/stopping for miles tho
if it was inbound
leaving there's not really an excuse
They do the green dye thing in Chicago
bridges don't get drunk and fall into traffic
i wonder what the fish think of the green dye
same thing we think of fish pee
what if they made the bridge legs from rubber.
they caught so much hell over that from environmentalist
It was in the middle of an acceleration maneuver and had just detached from two tugs when it lost power
Yeah it was leaving, had dropped it's anchor, and had no electrical power at time so it would have lost rudder
Deploy the oars!
There is a video out there covering how the loss of engine power itself could have caused some veering
We also can't see if both anchors were dropped or not (during incident) and they aren't on centre
But hey apparently the ships data recorder is now in the hands of investigators
My cat looks at a hamper of laundry fresh out of the dryer the same way that I look at a box of fresh Krispy Kreme donuts
as a litter box?
Where can I post images of my issue
Any image hosting site
Reports are that the pilot gave multiple orders at once: dropping anchor and hard to port were ordered at ~the same time. The ship was outbound on a strong tide. The data point we don't have is at what point control was lost. We can see from video the whole ship blacking out twice, but at this point it's unclear when mayday was called. Before or after the first time it all went black?
Yeah and one report is that the lights coming back on were just backup power generators and not main propulsion
That would explain the big puff of smoke the first time the lights came back - starting the emergency generator that's up on the main deck rather than the ones they normally use
Of course most stuff is at this time speculation
(existence of said emergency generator based on interview I read with a prof of naval architecture, not someone familiar with the specific ship)
That's apparently when the mayday was sent
The reason I speculate mayday was earlier is that pilot called harbor, harbor called bridge, and a 1.3 mile long bridge had traffic stopped for long enough that cars were cleared from it. Figure 60mph average speed that's anyway a full minute from closing the bridge until impact.

I saw a similar picture from someone on twitter who found a fussy thing in their Ali Express package
I do wish they'd reveal the age of the person who brought it in. Big difference between an eight year old girl doing that and a grown woman.
you know the answer to that....
Yeah. It didn't happen. Publicity stunt for the charity.
that is very likely as well

probably. it wasnt very smart, it tried to eat a porcupine and died
What's that?
I've got ollama-web-ui-lite installed, I think it's been superceded by a new version but it works for me
I have a CLI version of it working but it takes so much memory, basically impractical for most machines

surely you have an opinion on what the right gpu for a media server is
(before someone would buy an a3000 for twice the money of a 3060)
I could totally make use of a few A3000s
I run a P4, it cost me $40 and is shared between multiple containers
That said, I'm currently installing 6400 H100s

With that count I doubt they'll notice if one falls off the truck
Im deploying... a 1060
me too
dont those g/rtx gpus be troublesome in virtualized envs?
define troublesome
I'd guess somewhere in the $250M ballpark, depending on how much Nvidia likes them. 800 servers, 8 GPUs each. Plus a buttload of interconnects.
No ignoring the fact you need 100 racks or so to fit all that, either.
More feature locked than troublesome
i just remember it doing weird code 43 errors
That was artifical lockdowns, they quit doing that during the 2000 series
All you had to do to get around that was mask a couple VM features
There's a hack to get vGPU working on turing/ampere but it doesn't work on ada
Total is around 430M usd
I wrote some cuda code for tensor cores. I respect the people who can optimise code for those things, not easy
Heck, each server has 8 400G cables, that are $2500 each
146 thank you
i just want to plug it onto proxmox and have it work ;D
Why are they $2500? o.O I have 12 strand fiber cables here that'll easily do 400GB each that only go for like $400 on eBay.
Might even be able to do 400GB per strand, highest I've ever looked into was 100GB
800g to 2x400 split infiniband
Oh, so half of it is the infiniband keys
Yes
Infiniband go brrrrrr
8 cards per server
Plus 4x25G and 1G management
Such cabling wow
Have you got the new chungus switch to go with that? https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/networking/products/infiniband/quantum-x800/
You know shit's getting real when non-modular switches are growing to 4U tall
I haven't played with infiniband yet, though I did set up Soft-RoCE and get RDMA between two generic linux hosts on a normal network
Performed like ass
I've been playing with infiniband for 17 years
And now I'm probably gonna be involved in 6 of the largest clusters in the Nordics 😬
One of them ingests data from APJ and AMS over 20Gbit intercontinental links
I see why Nvidia is making so much money at the moment
AI train gotta slow down at some point...
I think we're going to see a revolution in training in the next year or so that makes these large setups somewhat overkill, but then something else will be found to use them.
I have very little faith the type of AI companies are deploying now will scale in performance much more at all
I just want more vram

isnt that standard?
Standard?
for tabs to have oled screens
unless its apple, then it sometimes lacks on a thousand buck device
nice
both my phones have oleds. very pretty. dont have any larger ones though. (cept tvs at work)
I'm quite fond of my OLED TV
mine is awesome. Hugely gigantic difference from the LED backlit one I had before
Which brand works best with HA? Thinking of upgrading my 65" heater plasma.
I treat mine mostly as a monitor with everything connected to a single input routed by my receiver. HA can turn my LG OLED from a few years ago on and off with no problem 🙂
Sony (Android) TV here, works fine but Sony seem to have slightly non-standard names for a lot of the controls so if you're doing remote.send_command actions you have to figure out what all the buttons are called
Pretty classic Sony behaviour, TBH
What's funny though is sometimes it was only the wrong decision for the time
Of course 5 years later when everyone else is doing that thing, Sony have long since given on and moved onto their next doorknob-level strategy
But someone in that organisation is doing ALLLLLLL the drugs, for sure
so many of their ideas are great, but they try to lock them down and it kills them

Star Trek The Next Generation Season 2 Episode 4 The Outrageous Okona
I have one of those
I didn't make it (off the shelf LoRa IO module), but works great
https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/iot-controller/uc300
This has 4× digital input, 2× relay, 4-20mA inputs, 0-10V inputs, PT100 temperature inputs, RS-485, and RS-232
Also inbuilt programmability 🙂 So I have an input that the GDO pulls high when the door is moving, when that goes low->high it turns the garage lights on for 1 minute, basically a brighter version of the courtesy light on the unit
With Meshtastic you can use MQTT with LoRa out of the box.
Should be quite easy to create some MQTT switch with that.
Depending on the mesh in your area, the range could be really good
How far away is your garage?
they'll need a car to reach their garage at that point
yea, we know that you can't stand people with healthy habits
I need to apply for building a garage at my new house when i take over
Yes, flex on us by dying faster
The current garage is from the 80s and pretty small
My car won't even fit I think, but it will be good enough for my rack and storage
sometimes i'd almost rather put my server etc in one of those external studios like what the brits convert their sheds too
this would suck https://youtu.be/dV35wcMMF6s?si=yrGTurvmAxX2fCUF

got something against regular income?
yes
boo.. boo on you sir!
Depends on where I am at the time. If I made a LoRa thing I could make it show the status of the garage door though
Though mostly I want to replace my built-in receiver because it only gets like 5m range and I'm tired of having to drive right up to my garage door, press it 10 times, then wait for it to open
Also if I made a LoRa thing it wouldn't be vulnerable to every skiddy with a flipper who found out what a rolling code attack is
+1 lora garage door, can only recommend
I don't think they need someone to trigger the button while in range anymore
lora has no message delivery guarantee or ack, so unless you built that in yourself you don't know whether the action was actually performed
that is quite easy to do fortunately
not really
i'll stick with my shelly with temp probe
I saw big cats today!
meow
Looks like it needs a good belly rub
Yes!
Ah, my question was because i get 25m range on battery operated ZigBee, so Lora has little value to me still
Zigbee would probably work fine for me too
But then I don't have an excuse to play wih LoRa
I had one earlier, wanted to monitor the chicken coop at my daughter's kindergarten, but they stopped having chickens
It is roughly 1km from my house
Should you monitor the chicken or rather the fox
i made this as a joke for people offended by fruit pizza... .but its actually awesome haha
banana on pizza is great
this is granny smith apple with brown sugar, cinamon, nutmeg. it creates the "sauce". then theres cheddar and cream cheese.
its definitely still pizza as opposed to a desert pastry
as long as you don't try to add pineapple, we are fine
hehe
not for the memes, I just generally hate warm pineapple
I refuse to accept this being a pizza
oh no, do you happen to be Swedish?
just stop calling it pizza, this is not pizza
says the one who eats raw bacon
i refuse to accept you as a racoon
Well yes I clearly am a cat with a hat
no such thing as raw bacon. by definition it is cured, even if it is not cooked twice
i ate that whole pizza. ha. not sure if id make it again, but genuinely good.
at least he doesn't bite life pig
thats bacon... but its not raw. you can safely eat it like that. not sure anyone would want to though
Do not eat uncooked bacon, it is not safe.
not true at all. it IS already cooked.
fully cured
yea, eat some nice Mett instead
again, strip side bacon from a package is GROSS... but its not unsafe
tl;dr: don't.
oh no, it's still a perishable, like almost all your entire food. including the things you eat raw
longer one says it's probably fine
yeah thats a pretty dumb article, sorry
You're not supposed to cook your burgers medium either but I do
I'll die any way I want
i dont eat beef, but if i do its gotta be well done to death
hehe
likewise, i like crispy bacon. but thats not a safety thing. thats just what i like
redder the better 🙂
animal
for burger it depends on how well I kept the cooling on the meat....
But yea, for proper steak well done is sin
hamburger?
Ground beef
Mett
yes, hamburger
Uncooked
but that looks very industrial 😦
tar tar. yeah, gross. but its still hamburger
Mettbrötchen!
There's something wrong with you if you eat ground beef raw like that
who said beef?
thats what tar tar is
It looks like beef, I hope it's beef
anyhow. you people are wieird
Tartar is usually processed in some way
Most french restaurants I've been to actually sear it for 1s on all sides
But some dont
Spices are a thing for a reason
dont eat raw egss
this is why noone looks to the french for cooking. raw burgers, snails, frogs.
Tell that to the Japanese
japanese cant cook either. they forget to put everything in the oven
I don't eat raw egg too often, but when I make tartar I do, just the yellow though
pretty normal in germanic countries, we also eat it
So, french can't cook, Japanese can't cook, are you American perchance or just German?
What's the point of tartar? I don't get it
as long as the beef is of decent quality
actually, when i cook egs i leave the yolks runny/raw

raw egg is one of those things I dislike the texture of
Eat. Like most food
It's delicious
its to pretend they are wild beasts hunting down cows in the forest
I don't think any of these are dangerous or anything like that, but I just don't quite understand why you wouldn't want the maillard in there as well
I've never seen a cow in a forest here. Just deer and boar
Raw whale is also quite tasty, especially as sashimi
raw egg whites can be dangerous
All of these can be, but I don't believe they are here
We have proper food hygiene yes, and healthy animals
No but it shouldn't be bad either
Won't eat raw chicken, but a friend of mine did for years
ewwww
I want it
Oh raw chicken is something I wouldn't eat. Pork is probably fine
oh, right, thats the other one that is potentially very bad
chicken I'd avoid simply because we have no culture for it, so I wouldn't trust them
chicken is dangerous
im allowed to have 2 chickens here. whenever i get my yard done, i might think of getting some. (for eggs).
just for fun mostly
You are limited to the number of chickens you can have?
as a rule, you may not have farm animals, but they started allowing chickens a few years ago
Oh, never heard of that, we can have whatever we want afaik
farm animals (not as pets) are regulated, so you cant just have them in your yard
if i was in a rural area i could just have a real farm
but not in the city
"That the City of Hamilton allow residents to have a maximum of 4 hens in their backyard if they have sufficient outdoor space" oooh.. 4 chickens now
Yeah, we can hold chickens in the middle of the Capitol if we want
just need to be able to afford the space
there's probaby some veterinarian authority that will haunt you otherwise
yes basically thats the reason here. you need to take care of farm animals to a standard
and usually thats not viable in a house
but i guess they feel 4 chickens is managable
you are sorta treating them like pets in a way
cat,not cattle D:
my uncle had a real "personal" farm. with pigs and geese and a horse
i dont think he had a cow
I had many friends in high school with a proper farm, quite normal around here
theres not many farms in the toronto area gotta go like 100km away
there are fruit orchards and fields
apples, peaches, mmm
In Belgium they can have whatever they want i believe, i had a friend who had multiple deer and several hares in their backyard, even a cow at some point
I went to school in a small town as well so had some farmer kids there. My family also had cows before but the gubbernment paid to get rid of those at some point
4 hens lay 800 eggs a year. wow. i dont even eat 100-150
we have 'volkstuintjes' here. Like this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening)
An allotment (British English) or community garden (North America) is a plot of land made available for individual, non-commercial gardening or growing food plants, so forming a kitchen garden away from the residence of the user. Such plots are formed by subdividing a piece of land into a few or up to several hundred parcels that are assigned to...
hares are wild here. they live in everyones yards.. stealin my veggies
We probably use close to 400 eggs a year in our house
had a small greenhouse. Tomatoes, cucumbers
i think we call them rabbits (i dont know what the real difference is)
I have a greenhouse, mostly grow tomatoes, but I have lots of fruits and berries too
yea, in school we had a couple kids with farms.
though lifestock tends to be centralized. They mostly lease out the land for that, even if they own enough
Two different animals
i dont like tomatoes so i skip those. gonna do carrots, corn, lettuce, spinach, cucumbers this year. plus peaches and apples
well i know that, but to me they seem the same. ha
One is easy to run over, one will break your transmission box if you do
hahaha
I'm not even kidding
Had a colleague who hit a hare, and there was a hole through the front of the car
And transmission was split in half
that is a jackelope
Yes
My grandparents lived in the town the idea originated from, they were everywhere there
ha
By 'they were everywhere' I mean fucked up taxidermied amalgamations of multiple animals, not actual jackalopes.
In the age of AI that looks pretty normal
They used to have a yearly festival called the Jackalope days
This animal does not exist for any who are unfamiliar
It's literally just deer antlers stuck on a rabbit
pretty sure I've seen some blurry pics from a distance
might have been bigfoot, hard to say
looks like a budget Wolpertinger
My favourite ever Bigfoot sketch is the one from robot chicken though
made famous but the full house guy
I want it
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39865810 oops, that's a fun one
i think i saw a review of that, it didnt go well
the idea is neat though
Depends if you saw the aluminium or abs one probably
The aluminium ones extra features aren't interesting for me
So I'll probably order the abs one
Doesn't that fuck up your battery life?
I already saw one these like 10 years ago
Wouldn't care, I'd use it in meeting rooms or in the office
That said, I also leave home office 27 times per year

The office
just use the proper screens in the office 😮
without a mention of how many desks you got, that tells me nothing at all
Roughly 50, plus meeting rooms and silent booths
Just need 1
No kink shame
I ain't ever going back to an office
I just posted that on linkedin and three country managers liked my post
So I guess they agree
The traffic is just getting ridiculous
Just cycle 🤷
_laughs in owning two houses _
why not?
It should be blatantly obvious, there are reindeer everywhere
They taste great though
so..? you could bring fresh food?
you're not going to drive that either
planes are a thing 😮
I'm at 1100ish in the last 1.5 years
I drive 6-10k extra a year just to let the kids sleep
My eldest had tummy aches and only driving soothed her
So I would often drive 150km with her on a single trip
The bed probing on the MK4 isn’t half bad.
Ti-83 spotted, very based
Can’t live without it
Mine died 😦
pretty sure you can run Doom on that
I can't remember which games, but I definitely had some on it
while you're waiting for your print to finish
I played soooo much mario in highschool
I remember i had a TI at one point, but that was 23 years ago, so can't remember the model
The point I stopped caring about school
It was probably that one
What color does that look to you?
Gray frame
Mine was all black
I see
Pretty sure mine had a larger screen too
But the lorge cxiit is a bit too expensive for it just doing numbers
Must have been 82 then since I believe we are around the same age and I had the 83+
That seems to be all-black
Aha, it wasn't an TI at all
Did it even run games? Smh
Casio CFX 9850GB plus
10¹²
The Casio looks pretty sexy as well
I only played with it, I was mentally done with math at that point
Just wasn't a thing in British schools. If you were lucky you had 12 digits of 7 segment display, but not everyone even had that
Graphing calcs were explicitly banned on syllabus and in exams for most modules
Having a physical calculator is like the best thing ever
Ours were allowed for all, as long as the teacher could wipe them
So we had to do backups

So one of the things you'd be examined on when I was in school was plotting functions
I remember there was a fake wipe app for it but I never used it
Abacus?
And of course a calculator that can plot it for you... They saw as cheating
No just an ordinary one
When was this @sudden forge?
Probably around 1966/77
With real buttons tho it's great
I left school a tad over a decade ago
At that time if you took A level advanced maths, you could have a graphing calc
what's an ordinary physical calculator? o.0
I left school 19 years ago
Wild, we were practically made to get one here in the early 2000's
But AQA and EdExcel for SATS, GCSE and all other maths courses were nahhh, no graphing calc
Obviously the mechanical ones smh my head

python and a mech-keeb? 😂
There was a specific Casio that was recommended, but it was basically just a bog standard scientific calculator, same vein as FX-350
I forget the exact model number they recommended when I was there, just googled for school supplies, and that's the model that showed up today, and looks similar to one of mine growing up
But graphing, nope
That's quite interesting, I didn't know it varies that much even within Europe
UK is its own
graphic calcs were in a very small niche during my school times
In most degrees
Yeah a lot of EU schooling is wildly different anyway
I think now they are in a larger but still niche
But it means frankly never owned one
I have owned calculators sure, I used to have an HP that had an RPN mode I quite liked using through uni and first few years of my job
Norwegian school is probably also quite weird, we started with dedicated laptops for primary school pupils in 2003 and tablets from 2013
But it suffered an unfortunate office chair wheel related event
I know Americans who had the Ti-83 so I always assumed it was a global thing
I read this as wheel chair related, and it was a lot more sad
Well, my boss is an occasional wheelchair user
So, that wouldn't be entirely impossible either
Mmm....Computer Shopper
I have considered making my own calculator since, like I've done plenty of macropad firmwares for folks and designed one singular macropad in past
Fun fact about the TI-83+, it's link port is particularly noisy and if you put an app on it that uses PWM over the link port to play a sample you can pick it up with an AM radio from a couple inches.
And a calculator is basically just a macropad with a display and a different firmware
pro-tip, always pick up the free Computer Shopper when you're leaving Comdex, not as you walk in 🙂
if anyone is planning to travel back in time like 25 years...
Also it's 768 bytes to store a TI-83+ screen and XKCD comic #768 is about how TI-83+ screens suck
They ghost real bad
Which actually let them do pretty decent greyscale for still images
Wasn't that all lcd's back then?
They only made the 83+ for 5 years it seems
For their new calculators they have color screens. They still have the main z80 for running it but also have an ARM controller running micropython the z80 talks to over uart so they can run python
I guess those ones aren't new anymore
A pi is suspiciously powerful next to this
Ipod touch was the main villain to these I guess
specific purpose hardware is always surprisingly slim compared to GP hardware
People managed to get blue color on the TI83+ by overvolting pixels. That was pretty cool.
eh, ipod touch alone? Probably not
I think the measure is if it can run Crysis
But general widespread availability of smartphones for sure
and tablets/similar devices
Certainly for end users anyway, schools dont normally allow that sorta thing to fly
Well the "current" gen z chips belong into a museum and not devices
🤷 I have no experience with the graphic calcs. Are they slow enough to notice the outdated compute?
Yes
Yea, a ti-83 takes like 30 seconds to plot sin(x)
I can only imagine they still have half a trillion units in stock and they need to go
Before they change to a cheap esp/stm chip
is TI affiliated with either?
Graphic calculators are just cash cows. Schools force you to buy them
Before either of that, I'd expect them to come up with a risc-v core
I still hold out to buy one of those cx-ii t calcs
They have a wifi module
Which is an optional pair addon for another 50 bucks

Most expensive wifi modem ever (all the rnd they had to do for these!!!11111)
wifi, we didn't have that in the olden days
Hey, we had wifi pretty early thank you
Pretty sure I had it at home in 2000, I rolled it out on all schools in my area in 2004/2005
Then again I had FTTH in 2004
I think 2004 was the first time I used WiFi, would have been 11g
Never (mercifully) had to deal with b
b wasn't that bad, don't get me started on 10Base2 and 10Base5
Then again I also made homemade crossover lpt cables for head to head gaming
I had a parallel port null modem cable back when, but it was a commercially made one
I think you got like 1.2Mbps?
Using that tool in windows called "direct cable connection"
I never actually had to use coax ethernet though, which I can't say I'm too sad about
I've dealt with my share of BNC cables (including making them) for SDI video, but narrowly missed ever using it for Ethernet
Maybe for your skill level kappa
Meanwhile I was other extreme
I had 56kbaud dial up in 2010
worse, with wifi
Yikes
We had 56 in 1994
Then isdn in 95
DOCSIS in 1998
ADSL in 2000
And then FTTH in 2004
I lived on a farm, that was all we could get, out of DSL range, and waaaaaaay too isolated for anyone to ya know, run fiber or coax out to us
As of about 2 years ago when mum finally moved out of that house, the fastest internet available wired was still only 1 megabit
But it is within 4G coverage, so at that point she was using a 4g hotspot
using lte is hardly ideal, but hardly the worst fate ever either
And FTTH in 2018
the only real problem is no techies left in the house once I was gone, and our relationship is flakey so I certainly wasnt spending much time round there
The 4g hotspot in question was legit one of the lil micro USB recharged travel hotspots
i had dsl in 1998 ish. up til a few years ago. now i have fibre.
it gave awful wifi coverage of the house and struggled with cellular signal pretty bad, was very fussy over where it was
I could have probably setup better, but meh, it worked. And her current house despite being a literal thatched roof cottage has fiber to property
If I had a dollar for every time our dev team ignored a critical part of their job and asked me to provide an API last second to fix it...
which team are you in again? D:
I'm on the team that handles directing our sysadmin team plus all the random jobs that don't fall under another department, like creating APIs to interface with our systems and testing new products to give opinions on them and random crap like that.
Like part dev part sysadmin part products
My official title is 'Systems Architect' but that's always been largely meaningless to me.
My official title is close to "potato with a side of sarcasm"
The EMEA director just called me "the wizard"
My wife just calls me "a dick"
My previous job title was "help desk" and during that role I mostly set up AD/federated all our services/took control of all the shadow IT that was around my company
That was fun but paid shit
I took over help desk after a guy I'm pretty sure quit right before he was going to get fired for theft, that was a mess when I took over.
Both figuratively and literally, he couldn't even use his office because it was full of trash.
Just tried booking my masters review, which means ww recognition inside the company, but as the Americans love corporate bullshit they say "Q2 reviews are closed, please come back in Q3"
what is a masters review?
The American concept of paybands is so weird
Ah, yes you are 20% above the median of your current payband, we need to bump you to the next payband
Ah yes, this requires an off cycle
sure it just makes it easier to organize budget
not really.
People's salaries don't change randomly at high relative rates without pay bands
What's a GAAP? o.0
I don't fully understand half of our numbers, but if they are not positive we fail as a company according to corporate capitalism
All companies have to grow every year for some reason
Non-GAAP(1) of $0.48, down 24% from the prior-year period and down 8% sequentially, at the high end of our guidance range of $0.42 to $0.50
HPE estimates fiscal 2024 revenue growth to be flat to 2%, in constant currency(1)(5), and fiscal 2024 GAAP operating profit growth to be in the range of 7% to 11% and non-GAAP operating profit(1)(4) growth to be flat to 2%. HPE estimates GAAP diluted net EPS to be in the range of $1.81 and $1.91 and non-GAAP diluted net EPS(1) to be in the range of $1.82 and $1.92. Fiscal 2024 non-GAAP diluted net EPS estimates exclude net after-tax adjustments of approximately $0.01 per diluted share, primarily related to stock-based compensation expense, amortization of intangible assets, transformation costs, acquisition, disposition and other related charges, structural tax-rate adjustments, H3C income, and adjustments related to the sale of H3C. HPE estimates free cash flow(1)(3)(5) to be at least $1.9 billion.
ah yes, pencil pusher's justification to exist
We just call them excel cowboys
Like a fellow?
Fellow is further
Master - distingushed - fellow
I'm currently at level 4, master is 5, and means I have to hold a presentation for 8 emea leaders and they convene to discuss if I'm to be moved up
More info: http://www.cardotcom.com/news/2011-funny-renault-ze-advertisement/
Renault is electrifying the car market with its brand new advertising campaign combining humor and education. This campaign aims to support the shift to a new era in the automotive industry: electric cars.
Interesting, let's see Paul Allen's level
philips also has fellows, but those are mostly research people that write patents I think
Yes, I'll probably never be a fellow
But I know multiple distinguished technologists that are less technical than me
So that is my goal for the next 5 years
Sounds super weird
Murica usually is
The lobby of elitism and the 1%
But let's not forget exceptionalism
cant see myself slaving away for some company to obtain some made up title after 30 years
Good thing I'm just having fun, I haven't slaved a single day the last 17 years
Fun stuff when your job is your hobby
may be so, but its still somebody else telling you what to do and how to do it
Not really
I accept what I want to do
And seek out my own work
Based on interest
And I'm the person who decides how to do it, and how other people should do it to some degree

I should have done the masters 10 years ago really, but I've been having too much fun and putting it off
People ask me "do you want to help with this"
I say "yes" or "no"

I don't know who hurt you
thats very strange
That's just figuring out who is best capable to do work but with asking people
Noone has ever ordered me to do anything
Even if I've been on call they have asked, even though I've signed up for the on call myself
And I've been working for.... 20 years in IT and 30 years total
IT must be completely different from engineering then
Probably yes
Which is why I asked who hurt you
Either that or the work environment in the Netherlands is toxic
I would almost say you worked for Amazon
what if you say no, and there is nobody else to do the job? what happens then?
Then the customer has to wait
Which is often, because I'm the only one who does 15+ products in Norway
And half a dozen in Scandinavia
Glad I'm not working in that toxic environment for sure
Unless country manager asks me to please prioritize a customer I say what I want to do in what order
If there is a multi million dollar contract at stake I'll probably reprioritize because that project will be fun for me when it is delivered
its not toxic
you've somehow ended up in a situation where you are the only person who can do a specific job, and now you have the luxury to select what you want to do
that is not normal (*at least not for people with a contract)
No, we don't force people to do stuff that they don't want to usually
I had a colleague who didn't want to learn a new product for 3 years
Which is a large reason why I know that many products, my colleagues don't want to
I just like learning new stuff
what the fuck
One of the primary reasons I've refused internal offers from US managers, I don't want a US manager, they are closer to what you describe
If I deliver on expectations noone cares what I do with my hours or how i distribute them
this has nothing to do with your manager
It seems like a rather standard thing to do in a client focused work field
You can and in fact should deny work you wouldn't be capable of or hired for doing. At least within reason
yes its very normal to make clients wait because your colleagues dont want to learn new technologies
If you don't have educated staff you can't serve that field
Yes, which is why there are multiple vendors
And wait times isn't uncommon in any industry
Unless it is system down you can wait
We really need another big economic crisis to set some priorities
Atx can only forklift so many gpus into systems a day
Yes, your industry sounds horrid, it needs a correction soon @primal laurel
You jest, but the water cooled racks need a fork lift, they are 800kg without servers inside
Add water for a few hundred kilos more
Floor structure required
Yes
Oh god
This is the 2012-> Apollo 8000 closed loops
Nice
This is the current gen with quick release connection for DLC
Next gen I can't show you

industry? what do you mean
Does it be significantly different?
Whatever toxic nonsense you work in
Redundant and nicer
Well guess you don't need the old one anymore then(I'll take em for free)
Well, lots of DCs retrofit old racks with rdhx
We don't make them, but we supply them
Helps to live in a country where you can do air to air exchange 360 days a year
And access to a lot of water
I think you lost touch with reality
Enjoy suffering
Far from it
What channel is most appropriate to ask for hardware recommendations when I don't need any particular protocol?
That channel sounds like it's about HA hardware, like the hardware HA itself runs on
Actually, maybe I misread the topic
👍
general hardware topic
Anger, accusations, and legal action are firing up on the Big Island after a construction company built a half-million-dollar house on the wrong lot.

as much as a headache to sort of that out.. i actually wouldn't mind in the long run lol
The women had a good pint at the end - how does one come on your property, build something, then sue you for it?
its why in the end she is gonna come out smelling like a rose no doubt
Seems like the government screwed up by approving permits without a site survey, but maybe they have lax laws
i dunno. you would think hawaii would have most of the same normal cookie cutter laws we have here
in my point of view. the land owner holds all the cards and someone just built her a half million dollar house for free
course she is now stuck with the taxes that come with that but hell.. worth it imo lol
wtf just now reading abot this https://youtu.be/a7EBLuNIfEc?si=nSk_0n5XBfGnBKfw

Don't all systems for the last 20 years have dual bios?
Ok, n00b alert incomming....
I have a growatt solar inverter and i want to get some information out of this inverter with help of a ESP-01.
I have the YAML code, and its valid.
Now i cant find the ESP..
Who would want to help a n00b out...
Pls DM 🙂
If not allowed here please tell me...
What do you mean you can't find the esp?
^ and ESP stuff is mostly discussed in #diy-archived. Don't expect people to DM though since it's often useful for everyone so they can use the search later
