Yeah I believe taking it out isn't too hard. There might be some glue, but AFAIK that phone isn't too hard to repair in general.

The very first idea I had was to build a Home Assistant dashboard for the phone and do all of the controlling from Home Assistant > MQTT > Teslamate, but I have no idea if that will even work. I'll need some kind of data-connectivity too, and to prevent always on, some kind of tasker-style automation that turns the screen on only when the back seats have someone in them. I could potentially detect that based on whether or not the seatbelt sign has come on, assuming this gets reported by Teslamate

But I'm pretty sure the vast majority all use the same vendor's controller

solar zealot
#

The non electric ones are far nicer

Yea let me just take a break while my desk comes up to standing height ;D

prisma briar

Lol, ours at work hardly got used as electric ones, nobody would use them if they were crank or manual

gleaming crater

Electric are so cheap anymore why bother with a crank

ocean oar

I think mine is compatible with those, should buy one

#

Although, as I was talking to someone about yesterday, you really would want to modify the firmware.

gleaming crater
#

On the desk?

#

Or the upsydesk?

ocean oar
#

The upsy. Because the most fun would be every time the person using it leaves the room, lower the desk ~5mm, but modify the value going to the display so it doesn't report any change

See how far you can lower it before they notice

gleaming crater

Lol reminds me a roald dahl story

solar zealot
gleaming crater

I already had to put a custom top on mine to make it tall enough, they don't seem to make desks for people my height

dire spear

i want to have remote control over a dining table with motors. so thers no buttons on it

gleaming crater
#

There is a place in texas that makes custom standing desk frames including 4-leg ones

dire spear

theres tons of custom leg options

gleaming crater
#

Then put a nice wood top on it and people wouldn't know till it started to rise lol

dire spear

but id like home assistant voice control

gleaming crater

With the upsy that's all totally doable

#

You could have the phrase "I'm feeling fat" make the table go into standing mode lol

dire spear

haha

ocean oar
#

The only custom command I've bothered implementing to date is "hey google, flush the cat toilet" to trigger the litter robot.

dire spear
#

hehe

#

i want to it just set it to cofee table, bar, and dining height

ocean oar
#

I do enjoy that the template the LR is built on is the robot vacuum one

#

Do they make extending table legs with that range of motion?

gleaming crater
#

My desk goes a pretty wide range with triple telescoping legs

#

Might be tricky to get 'coffee table' tho

ocean oar
#

Mine says 600mm - 1250mm, that covers dining/bar but definitely not low enough for coffee table

#

Problem is you'd need 4 or maybe even 5 part telescoping legs, and that'd likely in them being a bit wobbly, as well as limiting the size of the motor you could fit

forest edge
#

@tidal bronze we having a red flag fire warning day. This what it like for you every day?

gleaming crater
#

And you couldn't just use a single drive screw either and get the full range

ocean oar
#

Yeah that's what I was thinking

#

I don't know if you could make it sturdy enough, but it'd be fun to design a scissor-lift table

ocean oar
#

It'd have to be this design of table with one big central pillar

forest edge
#

The little one coming out of the finger

static schooner
#

Inspector Gagdet was full of surprises

gleaming crater
ocean oar
#

Well I was more thinking you could hide this sort of mechanism inside:

gleaming crater
#

Ahh true

ocean oar
#

Goes low. Goes high. Only small risk of crushing injury when lowering

gleaming crater
#

Now make it rigid enough to never wobble lol

ocean oar
#

Yeah that is the challenge. Maybe a 4-sided square lifting mechanism (hinged at the corners), and with the propulsion (probably lead screw) up the centre.
That might still be rotationally "wobbly", but should avoid too much side-to-side movement

gleaming crater
#

I'll never forget the time my dad took me up in a scissor lift and was intermittently pounding a nail on a board as it drifted past as the lift swaying back and forth in the wind

static schooner
#

the angle that picture is taken from makes that thing look terrifying

ocean oar
#

I'm really not a fan

gleaming crater
#

I did that pop out box at the sears tower and I thought my stomach was going to fall out of my ass

ocean oar
#

The only thing worse than a full size scissor lift is the single-person lift

#

Turn the wobble up to 11

winged obsidian

We have a cage for lifting 2 people on the forklift. Actually feels more stable, probably because the forklift weighs ~5.25 tons compared to ~1.5 for a scissor lift

My office had vending machines that took only cards, no cash. "Had" because someone decided to centralize everything on one floor for a big common break room. Now there's nothing. ender 3 has the most standard mass produced parts you can find probably. Hence the price

look at this, happened in amsterdam couple of years ago

#

(nobody got seriously hurt)

ocean oar
#

Yeah that isn't ideal. Oil-insulated cable maybe? That is used for some MV/HV lines

dire spear
#

theres oil in the barrel caps on the poles here

#

maybe that

prisma briar
#

To put it lightly

forest edge
#

yea I doubt you were in the meat of the city when judging it lol

#

there isn't even any stops except on the outskirts on both ends of like 70 or any of the major highways

dire spear
#

i vaguely remember gas station food fro driving to BC as a kid. it was... not good.

#

hehe

#

i think they were all husky stations

prisma briar
#

I don't remember exactly where I stayed, other than it was I think a comfort inn and it was a mile north of the missouri side of the river

#

It was 2010 I was down there

forest edge
#

again if it was a comfort inn you were not in the city

prisma briar
#

Like August/September

#

The event I was there for was at the convention center

forest edge
#

power and light district?

#

convention center is kind of vague to a degree

prisma briar
#

I spent a couple evenings there

#

Some open courtyard plaza

forest edge
#

that sounds like power and light which is on the north part of kansas city

#

which is next to 70 and 35 highway

#

but there is no comfort inn

#

or trucker stops

static schooner

prisma briar

This place and some building where the outside facade was a bunch of book spines are all I remember with enough detail to point out

this place

#

Which is a cool af library

dire spear

O_o

bad ai render

#

hehe

forest edge
#

thats power and light. that was called the sprint center

winged obsidian
#

There's a Comfort Inn at 3240 Broadway. That would be East of I-35, South of I-670, West of 71. Are downtown and "the meat" different areas?

forest edge
#

power and light is like the northern nipple of the city

winged obsidian
#

Just North of I-670?

forest edge
#

there is kansas city, than there is kansas city north. power and light is right on the edge

static schooner
#

When do you expect power and light in other parts of the city?

forest edge
winged obsidian
prisma briar
forest edge
#

yea the city is broken into pockets

prisma briar
#

I was just out of highschool, I didn't have fancy hotel money

forest edge
#

as you head south of there you get more into the "fancier" part and then back north where power and light is it's like older

dire spear
#

fancy hotel money in kansas cant be more than $4

forest edge
#

and all inbetween you have various shitholes and then some will be nicer

dire spear
#

4.50 tops

#

hehe

prisma briar
#

#

it "looks" old, ran down

winged obsidian

Pretty sure I went to that one. They were advertising being on diners, drive in's, and dines?

tidal bronze

Depends if the sauce and rub is made 0 sugar

forest edge

Q39 would be your best bet for some odd request

#

the other places would just laugh outloud

winged obsidian

tidal bronze

I do like BBQ, although I prefer single piece of meet that was given 💯 attention 😀

After all this time you still don't my eating habits huh

forest edge

maybe there was tree bark in there somewhere?

winged obsidian

There are some surprisingly good wines sold in boxes. Also many that are as bad as you'd expect.

forest edge

Wine, never from a box unless it's the new age keto wine. Cuz 3g sugar is little too much. Lol

we need another big war to get us back on track

history has proven that wars do help

primal laurel
#

Are you going to fight in it?

forest edge
#

probably. i'll man the big button

winged obsidian
#

I question whether running away from the one in Ukraine and towards another civil war would be as helpful as wars past.

forest edge
#

Ukraine dosen't really impact us

#

another civil war here would be interesting

#

we'd probably just end up with another canada

dire spear
#

and long as you dont get any war remnants on our side

winged obsidian
#

It'll end with North American being divided among three countries

#

Canada, Mexico, and Quebec.

forest edge
#

no

#

it will be canada then canada 2 then the south

dire spear
#

they pretend they wanna leave but the dont really

prisma briar
winged obsidian
#

Canada keeps holding the wrong referendum, putting it to vote in Quebec instead of the rest of the country.

dire spear
#

the issue with it was similar to scotland, where the question was BS

#

because half the people voting to leave still though they would get healthcare and the dollar etc

#

(from canada)

#

there was no comprehension of what being a separate country asctually meant for them

forest edge
#

candy strippers

dire spear
#

likewise brexit. no understanding of what would happen

#

(and everything that has happened was predictable)

#

now we got idiots in alberta thinking they will separate... they are land locked. good luck with that haha

#

"wed like to export out only resource of oil please".... yeah, no.

#

it would be better if the US submitted to canada though.

forest edge
#

no thanks.. you guys are worse than mexico

dire spear
#

we are gonna build a wall around the us

#

(even the coasts)

#

will be a canadian and mexico built wall though... so it will work

forest edge
#

wood instead of metal, snow instead of concrete

winged obsidian
#

Are you going to make us pay for the wall and the ladders?

dire spear
#

there will be a timmyis ever 4 km

forest edge
#

I doubt your country could even pull that off.. most of you are too stoned to make it very far from your homes

dire spear
forest edge
#

I actually knew a friend of my dad's who had paid for a new truck in pennies. I didn't get see the transaction but it was a truck load and they actually accepted it

prisma briar
#

Back when I worked at a pizza joint after highschool we had a couple customers come pay us with coins for like $100 orders. The banks hated my deposits the next day.

dire spear
#

ha

#

i had somoene buy a $450 bike in loonies

#

you cant realyl refuse it, its money

#

so you spend 20 mins counting it twice

prisma briar
#

We turned down large bills because we didn't keep that much in our drawers and people trying to buy a $12 item with a $100 kind of sucked

#

Frequently it was "Well, do you want $20 in coins?"

forest edge
#

a pizza hut had trouble breaking large bills?

prisma briar
#

It was a Papa Johns

forest edge
#

pizza joint nm

prisma briar
#

I say pizza joint because it sounds more respectable than Papa Johns

forest edge
#

papa johns never had a dine in that i am aware of so they started with just deliveries in mind

prisma briar
#

There were a small number that had sit-down areas but it wasn't full service

forest edge
#

tho with that said, the drivers should have been able to break large bills

prisma briar
#

Lol no, drivers carried $20 in change

#

Start sending people out with rolls of cash on them and they become targets

forest edge
#

yea but 100 is not really target worthy

#

its not like they have to carry enough to do back to back breaking of large bills

#

3 back to back stops at most?

prisma briar
#

Sometimes delivery drivers would take two or three orders in one trip

forest edge
#

it would be a shit deal for all 3 needing to break a 100 but the odds of that would be slim lol

prisma briar
#

At the time the website told people drivers only had $20 in change

forest edge
#

i believe that

prisma briar
#

idk if it still does, haven't had Papa Johns in a long time

forest edge
#

still weird tho

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

I stayed there for too long, but I was a general manager by the time I left

dire spear
#

100's mostly

#

not sure thats still the case with the new plastic money we have

prisma briar
#

That might have been another concern. We were told it was due to robbery concerns though

dire spear
#

ah, thats fair

prisma briar
#

Even then while I was there for about 5 years two stores and a half dozen drivers were robbed

dire spear
#

oof

prisma briar
#

None of mine, thankfully

winged obsidian
dire spear
#

every once in a while i have a large bundle of bills and i dont like carrying it to the bank

prisma briar
#

Papa Johns corporate owned all the Denver market at the time so there were about 25 stores all under one umbrella

tidal bronze
dire spear
#

mostly im paranoid ill drop it

dire spear
#

i dont think ive ever seen a papa johns here.

dire spear
prisma briar
#

What I was told when I worked there was that our dough was special because we put more sugar in it than other places

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

And Papa John's pizza sauce sucks

#

heartburn in a can

dire spear
#

i put sugar in my dough to feed the yeast. not enough to make it sweet

tidal bronze
#

Fast Pizza and donuts, is hard to find in LA now.

dire spear
#

i remember my pizza place offloading cans of clearly labelled d grade tomatos

#

not inspiring (although im sure its fine)

prisma briar
#

Papa Johns had these huge regional distribution centers/packing centers that served like 10 states that did their dough and another factory for their sauce

tidal bronze
#

Isn't that how they all do it?

dire spear
#

oh they dont make dough on site?

prisma briar
#

I toured one of the dough production lines once, was a bunch of seemingly over-engineered machines

#

that separated everything into size and put them into trays

forest edge
#

you must not go down in LA much lol

#

i do not believe donuts are hard to find anywhere

prisma briar
#

No, it was made in a factory then shipped in a refrigerator truck to the store, then left in a cooler at the store for a couple days until it was proofed up enough to use.

prisma briar
#

Yea, it was always live dough

#

I did get a couple frozen shipments in, I sent them back to the distribution center

tidal bronze
# forest edge donuts? really

Krispy creame went away long time ago. We do have a few small donut outlets here and there. Then again who in their right mind would think of eating one.

dire spear
#

timmys switched their doughnuts to frozen dough and everyone said omg they are horrible now i am offended.... but they had actually switched like 6 months earlier.

prisma briar
#

Sometimes the distribution center would short the store like half a week's inventory so I'd have to call all the neighboring stores and scrounge items.

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

There's plenty in east coast

prisma briar
#

There's a couple good donut places here. Voodoo up in Denver, there's a place called Amy's Donuts by where I am

dire spear

krispy cream couldnt compete with timmys here and didnt last

forest edge
#

@tidal bronzewe'll have to get some donuts when you come.. that way you can live a little

prisma briar

Voodoo donuts in denver used to be open 24/7 and if you went in at like 2 AM you could get a 5 gallon bucket full of the previous days' donuts.

#

Dunno, generally came across as a skill that does have quite a low barrier to entry, but a long way to go to master

#

But not everyone had to be a master, only proficient in their villages needs

dire spear
#

well, its a bit like painting. takes a little learning to paint a wall. a lot of skill to do an a+ job. but then painting the monalisa is a whole different category

dapper quartz
#

The funny thing is that aforementioned Mona Lisa was nothing more than just another mundane order from a rich guy.

dire spear
dapper quartz
#

Sure. As nowadays, not everyone needs a georeplicated Cassandra cluster.

sudden forge
#

Interior decorators, those people you generally hire because you don't have the time, not the skill

#

And ya know what, no disrespect intended to them

dire spear
#

not getting this at ikea

#

(one of the more famous artists that used my shop)

sudden forge
#

Clearly we see value in paying someone else to paint our houses for us, or the career wouldn't exist

dire spear
#

i love how catty artists are though

#

i asked that one once about another piece in the shop how much it would be in her gallery "oh that wouldnt go in the gallerys i sell at"'

#

ouch

dire spear
#

most people see no value in art though

#

its kinda weird

#

pay $1000+ to paint a room, but an art painting? pft! $50 at ikea

sudden forge
#

But in a sense it's my point, pretty much anyone has the ability to paint a room themselves to a decent standard

sudden forge
#

Bingo

#

I was quite proud of my handiwork on the last room I painted

dire spear
#

would you pay $45000 for that horse sculture though...

sudden forge
#

No

dire spear
#

me neither

#

(even if i was rich)

sudden forge
#

I have no interest in owning such a thing at any price tbh

dire spear
#

exactly

#

id take it as a gift

#

ha

#

but someone happily paid 45k for it

sudden forge
#

It's not that it's bad or I don't appreciate it either

dire spear
#

i only sold one glass work

sudden forge
#

But I look at it and just go nah, not my thing

dire spear
#

(well besides cats)

dapper quartz
#

most people see no value in art though

Of course. And somewhere between consuming luxury goods and mundane paintings lies the sweet spot for craftsmen and artisans of all kinds.

sudden forge
#

Friend is trying to sell some of her craft projects at various crafting fairs and etsy and such

#

Tbf at the crafting fairs doesnt do too badly

dire spear
#

glass has almost entirely died off as a skill

#

pottery is on the ropes

sudden forge
#

But regular complaint: oh its too expensive.
But folk dont appreciate that a lot of this hand made stuff takes a lot of time. She does factor in roughly how long it takes her to make it as an element of pricing, paying herself less than minimum wage

dapper quartz
#

pottery

Press [X] to doubt. Why do you think so?

dire spear
#

smithing there is still some work, for gates, railings, etc

sudden forge
#

Eh, even smithing for gates and railings, its more for the artful than the functional

#

Welder and some bar stock

#

Welding is a skill I'd love to learn, but right combination of time, money and space hasnt come up

dire spear
#

welding is extremely easy to learn

#

i learned to stick weld in about 15 minutes

#

takes a little longer to get good at it of course.

sudden forge
#

i'd like to make my own bike frame at some point

dire spear
#

ha

sudden forge
#

Nothing fancy, just hey look, I made a real basic steel frame

dire spear
#

i have a tig kit, and also a torche for brazing. but i havent had a place to use it lately

dapper quartz
sudden forge
#

I'm in a small rental house without space for proper workshop stuffs

dire spear
#

well, unemployed from pottery

#

many of them made custom tableware for local restaurants.

sudden forge
#

kinda neighbourhood where just getting a jack out to work on your car gets you looks of being a fucking weirdo

dire spear
#

hannun looks to have started up again. i think just in her house

#

she does porcelain mostly

sudden forge
#

See that I am more likely to welcome into my house than the horse 😛
