sudden forge
#

its just that the contact is also arranged slightly differently

#

And yeah our sockets are shuttered, the earth pin has to at least mechanically be there

forest edge
#

maybe one day you guys will upgrade to less than car sized plugs and outlets

sudden forge
#

They actually arent that much bigger than a US plug

#

Like they are bigger, but the difference isnt super absurd

forest edge
#

all the images i've seen they are yuge

sudden forge
#

Trying to think what universal constant item I have here for scale rather than meme of banana for scale

prisma briar
#

They are huge compared to a US plug, lol

sudden forge
#

its most of the EU plugs I hate

#

Deep receptacles and such, kooky things

#

But at least we do have the simplicity here of everything is just 240V

#

Just single phase

forest edge
#

i mean

#

that is huge

#

the plug is the same size as that adapater

#

I did read your plugs are way harder to accidently trip over and yank out of the outlet.. not sure if that's a good or bad thing tho

sudden forge
#

Dunno, why are you running the cables in a way you can trip over them

#

also though, big downside

#

They have a tendancy to sit on the floor prong side up and act as caltrops

prisma briar
#

You can get US cables that come out parallel to the wall that are way less likely to pull out too

#

Like those

sudden forge
#

screw stepping on a lego brick, stepping on a british plug, that can literally break bones in your foot (known folk to do it)

prisma briar
#

I stepped on a US plug a couple weeks ago and it left two scabs

#

Just broke skin though, didn't go in

#

It was the plug on that thing

sudden forge
#

plugs themselves are pretty overbuilt for their rated current, on purpose

#

you do get people doing a naughty naughty and running >13A through them in industrial settings

#

When we have 16&32A industrial plugs available....

solar zealot
prisma briar
#

I had to yell at my friend for running 1500w of fishtank heaters, an air compressor, and a circular saw off off a single 15a receptacle through a bunch of extension cords here

#

Got an alert from HA that a circuit was overloaded and he was pulling like 2500w from a single plug

sudden forge
#

the industrial plug we use (or use outdoors) is interlocked and water resistant though, at least when mounted properly for the latter

forest edge
#

i like my 360 outlet for my chest freezer and fridge downstairs

#

they even make some extension cords now with 360 heads

solar zealot
#

Sounds interesting

prisma briar
#

That overloading stupidity is what I'm trying to fix by getting tons of power out in that room, btw

sudden forge
#

interlock specifically so you could unplug while its raining or something without risking conducting live electricity through the rain water on the plug

#

plus comes in a 3 phase variation, got one of those in the cupboard

forest edge
#

15amp breaker should have tripped around 2k watts

prisma briar
#

15a receptacle on a 20a breaker

forest edge
#

ew

#

thats asking for trouble

prisma briar
#

I didn't wire this shitshow

forest edge
#

i'm sure it will be fine. i'm just being over dramatic

prisma briar
#

Yea, 15a on a 20a circuit is fine per code, he was just constantly overloading it

forest edge
#

the plug will melt before the breaker trips but outlets same rated properly do that as well

sudden forge
forest edge
sudden forge
#

there ya go, want a big plug?

forest edge
#

we have huge speaclized plugs

prisma briar
forest edge
#

plugs for like 10g and lower will be quite big

sudden forge
#

This isnt particularly specialised, we basically only have 4 plugs in the UK that are standardised

#

A legacy lighting only plug, the standard 3 pin, this 3 phase beast and the single phase version of it

#

you got an RV or caravan with an electric hookup on it? It'll have the single phase version of this

forest edge
#

we don't do standardized outside of 110v lol

#

seen so many diffrent style rv plugs and generator outlets to make your head spin

sudden forge
#

This bastard does 32A per phase

#

and with 3 phases at 240V each in UK...

#

Casual 23kW plug

prisma briar
#

There's standardized outlets for 240v here

forest edge
#

for certian things sure

prisma briar
solar zealot
#

There are supposedly ones with do 63/64A

sudden forge
#

Yeah >32 enters non standard land though

prisma briar
#

lol, fair

solar zealot
#

I wonder what madness they get used for

sudden forge
#

You also see the single phase version of this plug made with yellow plastic to do 110V

#

Comes up for some outdoor electrical equipment, fairly rare, you'll more likely see the standard blue plastic 240V

#

and red plastic 3 phase

forest edge
#

oversized audio din connector

sudden forge
#

110/240 have no mechanical difference and will interchange

prisma briar
#

Sketchy

solar zealot
#

Probably atx got two of those 75kw ones in his basement

sudden forge
#

Yep but how much 110 equipment exists here? Such equipment is already non standard

prisma briar
#

I'd be fine if high amperage and low amperage devices interchanged more but voltages should be separate

#

Don't your construction sites use a lot of 110v?

sudden forge
#

And welcome to the only place you'll find a yellow socket

#

And usually with a big warning label on it

#

I'd prefer if it was at least keyed differently

#

While I had a tesla mobile connector I did have the 32A single phase plug for it, and you could get a 3 phase one

forest edge
sudden forge
#

not that I had a tesla for long, hated the thing, now have something very different

forest edge
#

I think our car companies are transitioning to the tesla plug now

#

saw something about it on the news the other day

sudden forge
#

yeah, I dont know whats gonna happen over here

#

Tesla plug has been adopted as the "NACS"

#

I think ford and mercedes have both announced transitioning their US market vehicles to it

#

But EU already used a different plug, and tesla never used their own plug here

forest edge
#

from what I read a whole lot of people prefer it

umbral cliff
#

We have switches on our outlets here too, just over time have gotten in the habit of always switching stuff off. Just habit, plug out switch off lol

sudden forge
#

The NACS has its advantages over the J1772 type 1 or CCS type 1

umbral cliff
#

Also hi @sudden forge fancy seeing you here lol

sudden forge
#

Bonjour

umbral cliff
#

English person speaking french, run

forest edge
sudden forge
#

NACS is a similar size to a standard J1772 type 1, and does the CCS functions too without big bulky extended section of plug

#

but tesla in europe, they sold the original tesla roadster with a J1772 Type 1, and the model S just had a J1772 type 2 "mennekes" over here not the tesla connector

umbral cliff
sudden forge
#

and by the time of the model 3, they did a J1772 Type C + CCS type 2

forest edge
#

wasn't there something with those J connectors not being able to handle the fast charging or something?

sudden forge
#

The standard J's dont

#

You have an extended section of the connector for DC charging (CCS)

#

whereas tesla, they just ran DC over the AC wiring for fast charging

#

and dont actually rate their connector to as high a limit as CCS

forest edge
sudden forge
#

there ya go, CCS1 adds 2 dedicated DC lugs

forest edge
#

nice png lol

#

i'm on dark theme

sudden forge
#

same, didnt realise it would do that before I sent it, oh well

#

legit CCS connections are huge

#

and teslas way of just running DC over the existing AC connection really does neaten things up

forest edge
#

i don't think any of ours use that plug

sudden forge
#

US market EVs are all J1772 Type 1, CCS1, chademo or tesla

forest edge
#

maybe it's the l;eafs that use that big thing

sudden forge
#

Leafs dont

#

Well, newer ones actually do

forest edge
#

don't recall seeing any of the ev's i've looked at have it

sudden forge
#

But the older ones have 2 plugs

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

the J and supercharger are the only two i've seen

sudden forge
#

the leaf had 2 plugs

#

J1772 on the right, chademo on the left

#

chademo is DC only, so theyd do chademo fast charging or AC on J1772

forest edge
umbral cliff
umbral cliff
sudden forge
#

electric transit, CCS1

forest edge
#

is that a euro ford?

sudden forge
#

No

#

Hence the US government plate

forest edge
#

oh no that says us gov plate

sudden forge
#

CCS exists in the US, the issue is more that tesla dominated the fast charging station builds

forest edge
#

wonder where those people charge thier shit at aside from home lol

#

only tesla chargers in my neighborhood lol

sudden forge
#

tesla superchargers all have CCS adapters at them now

#

They basically have an adapter for tesla to CCS as part of the cradle

forest edge
#

ev's are kind of on a slight down curve with us now

#

was too much negative press

#

not tesla tho

sudden forge
#

whereas over here, tesla werent the only fast charger builder, and they used the same plug as everyone else

forest edge
#

just all the other car companies

sudden forge
#

so I am not sure whats going to happen here

#

we dont even use the same version of J1772 as the US, but the only difference is our version has 2 extra connections so it can optionally do 3 phase

#

you can passively adapt between the 2

#

and EU teslas were 3 phase capable

forest edge
#

i didn't think you all liked tesla to begin with

sudden forge
#

They were still the best seller for quite some time

#

though theyve now ended production of RHD S and X vehicles

#

can still buy a LHD S for UK though

#

which is odd as it comes with the left hand traffic headlights of the RHD cars

forest edge
#

what do you mean left hand traffic headlights?

#

as in the angle?

sudden forge
#

beam pattern is different

forest edge
#

ah yea

sudden forge
#

just a minor issue for driving a car on "wrong" side of the road versus where it was made to be driven

forest edge
#

saw something the other day about car led headlights are now being linked to possible blindness lol

sudden forge
#

Its weird, basically I can still buy a tesla model S, and it'll come with the RHD headlights on it, the EU charger on it (as UK and EU is the same) but LHD steering wheel/interior

#

Its basically an EU model with british headlights

#

and registered as a UK vehicle from day 1 (theres no laws preventing LHD cars in this country despite us normally being RHD)

#

But the 3 and Y are still being sold RHD, its very strange but I guess its part of where theyre probably phasing out the S and X

forest edge
#

prob from the war days

#

I know we left a whole lot of shit over there

sudden forge
#

Yeah but also some of europe was also RHD back then too (not much, it was dying off) and some of those places have laws preventing registration/keeping of RHD cars

forest edge
#

I couldn't drive with the wheel being on the right

sudden forge
#

I've driven a LHD car

#

It was definitely briefly baffling

#

But I think the bit that made it worse is that I was driving the LHD car on british roads of course designed for RHD

#

so that was a bit wild

forest edge
#

lol

#

driving on the wrong side dosen't bother me

#

but getting in and out and just where the controls etc would be on a rhd vehicle would annoy me

sudden forge
#

It was more the fact that I'm driving along by the pavement

#

And positioned wrong for road signage

#

I think I'd find LHD car on American or European roads easier, but I've never had to drive overseas

#

Last time I was abroad I was travelling by taxi or metro

#

Muscle memory for the stick in wrong hand was also a mild issue. But no big deal really

#

Friend at uni was German and bought her car over here with her

#

She fell ill at an event. I drove her back to her apartment in her car

#

I think it would be something you would get used to

forest edge
#

i'm right handed. i don't even like sitting in our passenger seats

sudden forge
#

I'm right handed. But it's only in recent years automatics have become popular. Most of us learned stick, operating the stick in the left hand

#

And there are reasons for why autos weren't as popular here, but those reasons are simply fizzling out with the advancement of automotive technology

forest edge
#

stick with left hand would be interesting lol

#

clutch with left foot took me a bit to get use to

sudden forge
#

Clutch is still left foot here

#

We just move the pedals straight across the car rather than mirroring them

#

But our drivers ed is normally in a stick vehicle so you're learning left foot clutch and left hand shifting from day 1

#

You don't know different

#

Why the UK still uses the opposite side of the road from just about everyone else bar Japan and Australia, dunno tbh

forest edge
#

old habits die hard

sudden forge
#

Doesn't really seem to bring any advantage or disadvantage (beyond manufacture of vehicles)

forest edge
#

cars would "maybe" be cheaper if there was only one style

sudden forge
#

And there's enough other regional differences across some manufacturers global offerings that even that might fall out in the wash

tidal bronze
#

Beautiful β™₯️ !!!! was missing home. Thank you for this.

sudden forge

And tbf my car is Japanese built in first place, where they drive RHD

#

regardless of what it is you're looking at

I'm just comparatively a country bumpkin and dont like cities πŸ˜›

forest edge
#

don't have to tbf, LA is a shithole lol

Same feeling I have when I travel.

forest edge
#

most Angelino's who had lived there for years probably wouldn't even know what city that was if they saw that video

sudden forge
#

London, sucks, paris, sucks. Munich was actually pretty neat and I would like to return. Every city in the UK? Sucks.

#

Large towns? Suck.

tidal bronze
#

I actually love London.

umbral cliff
#

Also disagree with London sucking, I like London. Driving in London was fun here, more fun than driving in some cities here lol

clever mortar
#

You have a strange idea of fun

sudden forge
#

London despite being the busiest city in the UK is genuinely not the worst to drive in from my experience

#

Nottingham. Nottingham is the worst for driving

umbral cliff
clever mortar
#

I've driven in the centre of London before... that was the slowest drive I've ever done

umbral cliff
#

Here it's just people wanting to fight you doing anything

sudden forge
#

and I dont know how nottingham manages to induce more rage in me than central london does

#

But it does

clever mortar
#

Took me longer to drive a few hundred miles to London than to get from the edge to my destination

sudden forge
#

Tbf I think what made nottingham worse is that gmaps in particular is just woefully wrong there

#

It has no idea where to go

umbral cliff
sudden forge
#

it'll happily try and force you the wrong way down 1 way roads

#

so most of my rage there was probably sat nav related

umbral cliff
#

I do live in the city here with the worst drivers in Australia. It's chaos sometimes

sudden forge
#

whereas gmaps in london is sensible, it tells you which lane to be in before a junction and is usually correct about it

clever mortar
sudden forge
#

Then again theres a spot in edinburgh where gmaps tries to make you drive down a footpath

#

A footpath that is in fact a staircase

clever mortar

I've seen the photos from that

#

Some people are pillocks

sudden forge

I dont live far from the St Ives car trap which has been equally fantastic for witnessing sheer stupidity

so stop trying to use rpi 1 lol

I tried a 34" curved monitor once. didn't like it but there is no comparison between a 34 and 55 lol

primal laurel

4k 27 inch is perfect

orchid rose
#

55" is bit more than 4x the size of a 34" which is why I mentioned it. I think there's a limit on how close you want to comfortably get to before you will rather stay further away than maximize the pixels per degree of view

#

Our sight is pretty limited after all and having the screen too close causes all kinds of uncomfort

#

I have a 92" projector screen that I watch from 2.5m away most of the time, but I often notice myself leaning forwards when watching movies. It's because movies were made for big screen and stuff in you peripheral vision is of lower importance. The resolution is nor the size are the important factors here

forest edge
dire spear

when you stare at a computer, your eyes are at a set focus distance for hours and hours on end. usually one very close to your face. with younger people its not that big a deal, but as you age the lenses become more resistant to deformation and it can take a long time for them to change focus. it sometimes takes several minutes for me to be able to focus on far things after working at my computer for hours.

orchid rose
# forest edge does all screens look the same to you?

Good lord... My point was the opposite of that The Sphere looks like a screen because we watch it from afar but up close it looks like shit. That doesn't mean it's going to hurt our eyesight if we look at these spread out LEDs at 3 feet

forest edge

I don't see pixels on bigger monitors spread out like that tho

static schooner
forest edge

density is too compact

#

it would be less eye strain if they were spread oput

and even though we may not consciously see the individual pixels on 4k or 8k or whatever. our eyes still do and are still impacted by it
