And yeah our sockets are shuttered, the earth pin has to at least mechanically be there
maybe one day you guys will upgrade to less than car sized plugs and outlets
They actually arent that much bigger than a US plug
Like they are bigger, but the difference isnt super absurd
all the images i've seen they are yuge
Trying to think what universal constant item I have here for scale rather than meme of banana for scale
They are huge compared to a US plug, lol
its most of the EU plugs I hate
Deep receptacles and such, kooky things
But at least we do have the simplicity here of everything is just 240V
Just single phase
i mean
that is huge
the plug is the same size as that adapater
I did read your plugs are way harder to accidently trip over and yank out of the outlet.. not sure if that's a good or bad thing tho
Dunno, why are you running the cables in a way you can trip over them
also though, big downside
They have a tendancy to sit on the floor prong side up and act as caltrops
You can get US cables that come out parallel to the wall that are way less likely to pull out too
Like those
screw stepping on a lego brick, stepping on a british plug, that can literally break bones in your foot (known folk to do it)
I stepped on a US plug a couple weeks ago and it left two scabs
Just broke skin though, didn't go in
It was the plug on that thing
plugs themselves are pretty overbuilt for their rated current, on purpose
you do get people doing a naughty naughty and running >13A through them in industrial settings
When we have 16&32A industrial plugs available....
Found the guy who doesn't appreciate cee plugs for home appliances π
I had to yell at my friend for running 1500w of fishtank heaters, an air compressor, and a circular saw off off a single 15a receptacle through a bunch of extension cords here
Got an alert from HA that a circuit was overloaded and he was pulling like 2500w from a single plug
the industrial plug we use (or use outdoors) is interlocked and water resistant though, at least when mounted properly for the latter
i like my 360 outlet for my chest freezer and fridge downstairs
they even make some extension cords now with 360 heads
Sounds interesting
That overloading stupidity is what I'm trying to fix by getting tons of power out in that room, btw
interlock specifically so you could unplug while its raining or something without risking conducting live electricity through the rain water on the plug
plus comes in a 3 phase variation, got one of those in the cupboard
15amp breaker should have tripped around 2k watts
15a receptacle on a 20a breaker
I didn't wire this shitshow
i'm sure it will be fine. i'm just being over dramatic
Yea, 15a on a 20a circuit is fine per code, he was just constantly overloading it
the plug will melt before the breaker trips but outlets same rated properly do that as well
as long as there are multiple daisy chained.. that is the key
there ya go, want a big plug?
we have huge speaclized plugs
All of the outlets in this room are from the subpanel to a single outlet, heh
plugs for like 10g and lower will be quite big
This isnt particularly specialised, we basically only have 4 plugs in the UK that are standardised
A legacy lighting only plug, the standard 3 pin, this 3 phase beast and the single phase version of it
you got an RV or caravan with an electric hookup on it? It'll have the single phase version of this
we don't do standardized outside of 110v lol
seen so many diffrent style rv plugs and generator outlets to make your head spin
Ye that be cee plugs aswell
This bastard does 32A per phase
and with 3 phases at 240V each in UK...
Casual 23kW plug
There's standardized outlets for 240v here
for certian things sure
There are supposedly ones with do 63/64A
Yeah >32 enters non standard land though
lol, fair
I wonder what madness they get used for
You also see the single phase version of this plug made with yellow plastic to do 110V
Comes up for some outdoor electrical equipment, fairly rare, you'll more likely see the standard blue plastic 240V
and red plastic 3 phase
oversized audio din connector
110/240 have no mechanical difference and will interchange
Sketchy
Probably atx got two of those 75kw ones in his basement
Yep but how much 110 equipment exists here? Such equipment is already non standard
I'd be fine if high amperage and low amperage devices interchanged more but voltages should be separate
Don't your construction sites use a lot of 110v?
And welcome to the only place you'll find a yellow socket
And usually with a big warning label on it
I'd prefer if it was at least keyed differently
While I had a tesla mobile connector I did have the 32A single phase plug for it, and you could get a 3 phase one
not as expensive as i thought https://www.homedepot.com/p/Siemens-20-Amp-120-Volt-1-Pole-Tandem-CAFCI-Type-QTA-Circuit-Breaker-Q2020AFC/317050333
not that I had a tesla for long, hated the thing, now have something very different
I think our car companies are transitioning to the tesla plug now
saw something about it on the news the other day
yeah, I dont know whats gonna happen over here
Tesla plug has been adopted as the "NACS"
I think ford and mercedes have both announced transitioning their US market vehicles to it
But EU already used a different plug, and tesla never used their own plug here
from what I read a whole lot of people prefer it
We have switches on our outlets here too, just over time have gotten in the habit of always switching stuff off. Just habit, plug out switch off lol
The NACS has its advantages over the J1772 type 1 or CCS type 1
Also hi @sudden forge fancy seeing you here lol
Bonjour
English person speaking french, run
makes sense, aren't your plugs just as funky as the brits?
NACS is a similar size to a standard J1772 type 1, and does the CCS functions too without big bulky extended section of plug
but tesla in europe, they sold the original tesla roadster with a J1772 Type 1, and the model S just had a J1772 type 2 "mennekes" over here not the tesla connector
Less dangerous to step on as they're usually in this format
But come with the longer earth and sheathing on the live/neutral prongs like the UK
Though we don't have to have an earth on our plugs here, no shutters on the outlets, too thin for coins or keys to get in
and by the time of the model 3, they did a J1772 Type C + CCS type 2
wasn't there something with those J connectors not being able to handle the fast charging or something?
The standard J's dont
You have an extended section of the connector for DC charging (CCS)
whereas tesla, they just ran DC over the AC wiring for fast charging
and dont actually rate their connector to as high a limit as CCS
thats a chunky looking plug lol
same, didnt realise it would do that before I sent it, oh well
legit CCS connections are huge
and teslas way of just running DC over the existing AC connection really does neaten things up
i don't think any of ours use that plug
US market EVs are all J1772 Type 1, CCS1, chademo or tesla
maybe it's the l;eafs that use that big thing
don't recall seeing any of the ev's i've looked at have it
But the older ones have 2 plugs
Its not too bad
But yeah it is bigger (this is the two prong version shown, so a non earthed appliance)
the J and supercharger are the only two i've seen
the leaf had 2 plugs
J1772 on the right, chademo on the left
chademo is DC only, so theyd do chademo fast charging or AC on J1772
looks like it was designed with roo defense in mind
Nah
Its good against spiders though, can wack them with it lol
electric transit, CCS1
is that a euro ford?
oh no that says us gov plate
CCS exists in the US, the issue is more that tesla dominated the fast charging station builds
wonder where those people charge thier shit at aside from home lol
only tesla chargers in my neighborhood lol
tesla superchargers all have CCS adapters at them now
They basically have an adapter for tesla to CCS as part of the cradle
ev's are kind of on a slight down curve with us now
was too much negative press
not tesla tho
whereas over here, tesla werent the only fast charger builder, and they used the same plug as everyone else
just all the other car companies
so I am not sure whats going to happen here
we dont even use the same version of J1772 as the US, but the only difference is our version has 2 extra connections so it can optionally do 3 phase
you can passively adapt between the 2
and EU teslas were 3 phase capable
i didn't think you all liked tesla to begin with
They were still the best seller for quite some time
though theyve now ended production of RHD S and X vehicles
can still buy a LHD S for UK though
which is odd as it comes with the left hand traffic headlights of the RHD cars
beam pattern is different
ah yea
just a minor issue for driving a car on "wrong" side of the road versus where it was made to be driven
saw something the other day about car led headlights are now being linked to possible blindness lol
Its weird, basically I can still buy a tesla model S, and it'll come with the RHD headlights on it, the EU charger on it (as UK and EU is the same) but LHD steering wheel/interior
Its basically an EU model with british headlights
and registered as a UK vehicle from day 1 (theres no laws preventing LHD cars in this country despite us normally being RHD)
But the 3 and Y are still being sold RHD, its very strange but I guess its part of where theyre probably phasing out the S and X
Yeah but also some of europe was also RHD back then too (not much, it was dying off) and some of those places have laws preventing registration/keeping of RHD cars
I couldn't drive with the wheel being on the right
I've driven a LHD car
It was definitely briefly baffling
But I think the bit that made it worse is that I was driving the LHD car on british roads of course designed for RHD
so that was a bit wild
lol
driving on the wrong side dosen't bother me
but getting in and out and just where the controls etc would be on a rhd vehicle would annoy me
It was more the fact that I'm driving along by the pavement
And positioned wrong for road signage
I think I'd find LHD car on American or European roads easier, but I've never had to drive overseas
Last time I was abroad I was travelling by taxi or metro
Muscle memory for the stick in wrong hand was also a mild issue. But no big deal really
Friend at uni was German and bought her car over here with her
She fell ill at an event. I drove her back to her apartment in her car
I think it would be something you would get used to
i'm right handed. i don't even like sitting in our passenger seats
I'm right handed. But it's only in recent years automatics have become popular. Most of us learned stick, operating the stick in the left hand
And there are reasons for why autos weren't as popular here, but those reasons are simply fizzling out with the advancement of automotive technology
stick with left hand would be interesting lol
clutch with left foot took me a bit to get use to
Clutch is still left foot here
We just move the pedals straight across the car rather than mirroring them
But our drivers ed is normally in a stick vehicle so you're learning left foot clutch and left hand shifting from day 1
You don't know different
Why the UK still uses the opposite side of the road from just about everyone else bar Japan and Australia, dunno tbh
old habits die hard
Doesn't really seem to bring any advantage or disadvantage (beyond manufacture of vehicles)
cars would "maybe" be cheaper if there was only one style
And there's enough other regional differences across some manufacturers global offerings that even that might fall out in the wash
Beautiful β₯οΈ !!!! was missing home. Thank you for this.
you kidding? I thought it was an arial of a landfill at first..
It's all good. Most filmed landfil then. It's not for middle earth to decipher.
nothing to decipher. you guys would probably shit yourselves at the sight of a plant
I feel bad for those 15 moutain lions trapped there lol
There is a distinct lack of green and curves in that video
You learn something new everyday π
I FOUND A CIRCLE
felt like i needed to call my doctor and get screened for pollution related cancers after watching that video
For curves you gotta be at 6' above ground level.
tbf its always interesting seeing the world from a different perspective
regardless of what it is you're looking at
I'm just comparatively a country bumpkin and dont like cities π
had some folk raving that manchester is such an awesome city. Me: spent every minute there counting down how long before I can leave this nightmare
Same feeling I have when I travel.
most Angelino's who had lived there for years probably wouldn't even know what city that was if they saw that video
London, sucks, paris, sucks. Munich was actually pretty neat and I would like to return. Every city in the UK? Sucks.
Large towns? Suck.
I actually love London.
That makes a lot of sense, tesla never bought the model x to australia, makes sense they're phasing out of RHD cars
Also disagree with London sucking, I like London. Driving in London was fun here, more fun than driving in some cities here lol
You have a strange idea of fun
London despite being the busiest city in the UK is genuinely not the worst to drive in from my experience
Nottingham. Nottingham is the worst for driving
It's like a giant ballet
I've driven in the centre of London before... that was the slowest drive I've ever done
Here it's just people wanting to fight you doing anything
and I dont know how nottingham manages to induce more rage in me than central london does
But it does
Took me longer to drive a few hundred miles to London than to get from the edge to my destination
Tbf I think what made nottingham worse is that gmaps in particular is just woefully wrong there
It has no idea where to go
Yeah I would get sick of driving in London if I had to do it frequently
I only experienced it when learning to drive
it'll happily try and force you the wrong way down 1 way roads
so most of my rage there was probably sat nav related
I do live in the city here with the worst drivers in Australia. It's chaos sometimes
whereas gmaps in london is sensible, it tells you which lane to be in before a junction and is usually correct about it
Last time I was in London Google Maps said it'd be quicker to walk across London than get a taxi
Then again theres a spot in edinburgh where gmaps tries to make you drive down a footpath
A footpath that is in fact a staircase
I dont live far from the St Ives car trap which has been equally fantastic for witnessing sheer stupidity
all clutches are left foot lol
I like driving here, 20 minute door to door commute to work plus free parking
Convenient and cheap
Peak hour is literally an hour, and easily avoided too
Alas my town its now a 30 minute commute to get to work by car
there's several of those here, google maps tried to have me drive thru peoples driveways
but thats due to a double whammy of floods and road works
We'll be back to 5-10 minute commutes in a day or 2 once the waterlevel goes down
Shame
That's closer to how long it takes me to take PT to work lol (35-40 mins)
Have you tried doing a top gear and turning your car into an amphibian /s
alas, my route to work aint even underwater XD
Its just the sheer amount of redirected traffic
still, this was saturday in St Ives
There are more warning signs out of frame
My route to work involves a short walk... don't even have to leave the house π
I actually did do this before, but it caused more traffic from gawkers
some even indicating theres a literal hole in the road to prevent cars
and yet the most common excuse: I didnt see any signs
most days my traffic is solely based on if the cat trips me up walking to my office
Some people are pillocks
I have a 1 minute 45 second commute today Tink
at least someone can follow signs XD
I was told the same by a few Taxis π€£
I have the dog version of that problem
cat version easier imho
but today I actually have to leave the house, unless someone would like to share their secret of mounting cameras on a roof remotely
and this shit is why I don't care to travel
I do that one day a week lol
I like the office though
@forest edge you busy today? It's Valentine's day.
I loved driving all over the world
why you lonely? lol
I did go out on a bike ride over the weekend to view the flooding, that was fun
You don't have to drive to travel
I enjoy the office too... but I only have to go in every few months
well at least I have the same screen at home and at work
Rode through some of the shallower bits
but I do not enjoy the office, too many .... humans
I was there in December, I'll be back in March
and not enough cats
That's fair
At least in the office I have a mechanical keyboard and 2 1440p displays, so it is basically as good as at home
Not some shitty office equipment lol
but thankfully everyone in my office is family π
mech keyboard and an ultrawide 1440p display in office for me
That's the fun part. Can give your colleagues shit. Our team manager gives us shit and we give them shit back too lol
I only got a 27" main screen at both places, but this is where the office shines... I have a 27" and 2 55"s but at home I only have the 27" and 1 55"
oh they are all too afraid to give me shit, I'll turn off their wifi
actually I just booted everyone off the wifi again so there's that π
How mean
bosses orders
she spots them far too much on their phones on the new HD cameras I've put everywhere
π
You must their favorite human
I giveth, yet I taketh away
typical.. beach life and yet still glued to the phone
wait till they realize all the sensors I installed
I just spent all of last week on my beach, whatta ya mean
Just slack off on the computers instead
well it's a farm store.... the butchers don't have PC's, neither do the shelf boys or packing staff
you just said everyone was on their phones.. typical younger generations
but when meat is sitting defrosting not being unloaded/loaded and everyone is on the phone....
oh well they are at work after all, no beach in the store
Not everyone has to drive to town to use the internet.
actually some of these kids do not have internet at home
are you ever "not" in town?
so I do kinda feel bad for em, but at the same time if they weren't a problem they would have had wifi still
I see more people older than me on their phone in the office than the younger people lol
Most of the time.
older is allowed.. likely for buisness reasons anyways
Nope
Not when they don't have work phones lol
you clearly don't see the 50+ year olds watching tiktok all day
flying over green places dosen't count
I wonder what time I should go to work today
it seems no matter what time I get there I'm always there till closing
I know, no internet
closest thing to experience actual life you ever get lol
This sucks. Not home for Valentine's day. π
I dont have a valentine anyway, just gonna snuggle my cat when I am home
older people on phones are just trying to catch up and keep up with their kids who can't ever put the phone down lol
She was extra cuddly this morning
sonoma I was on the beach and glued to my phone to take this π
by that math I have 3 valentines π
what do kale eaters get their mates for this day anyways? pieces of bark?
this was last week, any time I tried to retrieve my hand, she woke up, moved back onto my hand and dozed off again
If the cat I have that looks like that wasn't trying to scratch my door down rn I'd have thought catnapping was afoot π
Depends on the flowers.
oh there's a patch of white, deffo not mine π
yeah and she has some more white underneath her
theres a little bit just about visible lurking in her armpit there
there is no tie so you know it's not @umbral cliff 's cat
cats!
dogs
I dont live in the US so I have no problems with the police or their dogs π
neither do I π
you think this is in the US Stefan? #the-water-cooler message
KrAzIe242 is back π
I've been up to nefarious things
now I have questions π
my soldering irons have been busy
also hard to be back to someplace you never left, I lurk a LOT
you think im in geoguessr??
no but look at the ocean my guy
the sand
and that's on a day when the water is "murky"
Krazie's survival is based of american tourist bread crumbs and selling sand for american fish tanks
well you're not wrong
He is propably the owner of all HA instances in his country
there's 2 I don't own for sure
Oh... HA is expanding
A fat cat from Edmonton has made a splash on TikTok for his workout routine.
Peaches the Purrmaid, weighing nearly 25 pounds, has been swimming in an effort to lose weight.
During the pandemic, owner Chastity Emes attempted to get Peaches to accompany her on walks to drop the weight, but didnβt have much luck.
βI had a harness for him and tri...
yup and one of them is on this island and the other is on the island my other house is
so when I put HA in the other house, then it will be +1
yes, its an ocean. What am I supposed to see lol
it's clear
there is no ocean that looks like that in the US π
either way I thought you knew I was from The Bahamas π€·ββοΈ
this is a big hint π
considering there are only 14 HA installations in Krazies world, this convo isn't far off lol
there's 14 now?
yea
I haven't checked in a while
that means my buddy DID get it installed on his RPI3
nice
if you were Haiti you would be the only one lol
yeah and being the only one in Haiti with HA wouldn't be a good idea
π nope, sorry
wtf virtual HA install over took rpi 4's
a long while ago
not pi's as a whole but the 4
yeah I know
but I stopped running on Rpi and went virtual, which lead to the HA installs in my country almost doubling because now I have test machines π
im never ever touching a stupid rpi again
things that were taking me months to figure out I did in 49 seconds in ESPHOME
well
what does that have to do with an rpi
ill give you some context
I used to run HA on my RPI's
they aren't supported anymore
so then I used them for other things, and went virtual
trying to use them for even more things, I got frustrated
when I got my batch of ESP's I tried some things I wanted to do and they worked right so
so stop trying to use rpi 1 lol
hence why I'm never touching them again
and pico
the only thing older pi's are useful for are print servers and network usb hubs
actually haven't tried a pico yet, but have something in mind I wanna do with one
well they can print serve in the bin they are in
if it can run on an esp then you probably shouldnt run it on a pi in the first place
as long as they can do it unpowered and not connected
have you met me?
I am the king of probably shouldn't
I was advised against running HA on my pi for years π
HA runs fine on a pi. Just needs an SSD and not an SD card
then they just dropped support, only way to ween me off the teet
on a 1B+?
cuz that's what I have 2 of
he can't get anything newer lol
infact what he has likely fell out of some tourists bag
I can, it was just for a long time not worth it
1B+? isnt that like 20 years old
old enough to drink and have children!
speaking of which, my son's 18th birthday was yesterday
I wonder what the most cheapiest thing you can run HA on.. not talking about bargains deals or any of that shit either
A pi zero 2 maybe lol
nah can't on zeros
a VM on a machine you already own
The zero 2 is 64bit
oh yea
samsung smart fridge display
thats not cheap
one of those media displays you can hack
subjective
digital pregnancy test
getting for free or whatever dosen't count lol
I wanna see HA on a C64
I mean itβs reallllly hard to beat the zero 2 at $15 bux lol
well a $15 old PC would
just any cheap SBC will do
well this suggests yes https://www.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/swhsln/can_a_raspberry_pi_zero_2_w_run_homeassistant/
if you're a linux wizard you can probably make it run on anything
I mean all they dropped was 32 bit support
they didn't delete the older images tho π
Yes itβs just the 2nd largest open source project on the planet
Youβll get left in the dust so quick
These releases are impressively feature rich
latest one uses more memory for whatever reason
think it may have been a 10% jump on my rpi4
by who?
I mean anybody clinging to a pi 1 isnβt about staying up to date lmao
I still have an Atari
so I don't see your point
I also have 3 PS4's I don't use
shrugs
pi 3, very literally, just a die shrink&repackage
Ahh yes lol my bad
I wonder if the bahamas will be one of the first to catch fire in the coming years with global warming lol
has to be the nicest places to go first right
well it's 95% water
and remember, we are basically desert islands anyway...
but.... if the seas rise.... we're borked.
Live on boat, ez
exactly
turn the flight deck of an aircraft carrier into a vegetable patch
well there aren't so many aircraft carriers in The Bahamas to choose from
but, there's a boat yard about 400 yards from my house here
π
Thats what guns and iron cahones' were invented for
ride boat around to find aircraft carrier. Make it yours. Grow old or die trying
I live at the top of a hill, not a huge one, but I have to wait for a reasonable amount of people to have drowned first
downside, said hill may become an island and I have no boat
So alas, once my hill becomes island, if the water continued to rise eventually I too would become drown
need help with water? call us
And the hill aint so big either XD
the dutch have built quite a few of our sea ports π
Picture doesnt really do its actual height justice, but also shows we're hardly talking much elevation XD
my hill is 35m above sea level and steep drive up π
We're a similar altitude from sea level
where I live currently is pretty high above sea level in comparison to the surrounding areas
was really one of the main points of buying a house here "don't build on reclaimed land"
Checked, my house according to one map is 31m from sea level
ok I really gotta go to work now before they start calling me
the problem is that the river is 15m above sea level, and has currently burst its banks, its a bit damp
we have no rivers π
and this would have been part of my normal commute
Estimation: about 2-3 feet deep
Not atrocious per se, but errm, definitely want your waders on if you're gonna go through there
that path normally continues sloping downwards a way and theres some bushes down there somewhere, or there were
though in january we had worse flooding and the water was a good halfway up the bin
January caused a chunk of road surface to be ripped up
revealing that the road was literally just asphalt chucked on top of some victorian cobble
My wife has worked at the same vet clinic for 18 years, our dogs get to go to work just because so they thankfully have no clue if it's going to be a day with extra stabbings lol
Vets are mean, even when they give treats
One of our dogs has to greet everyone in the clinic when she arrives lol
I think my cats generate extra gravity when I try to get them out of their carriers
good luck, I'm not helping you at all
Lol our cat will brace himself like an X in his carrier to lodge himself
Lol do you give your dog trazadone for that stuff
nah he needs to man up
Lol as long as he's not bitey
My sisters cat is the only cat I have ever witnessed that is totally okay with carriers
just go put her favourite toy in the carrier with some treats, she'll go loaf in there
close door, pick it up, no distress. Open it other end, out she trots
doesn't bark, doesn't bite, always calm. 10/10 good boy
We're still breaking the barking with our youngest dog, she loves to go out into the yard and flex on people passing by
with good training you can do it
I want to build an ultrasonic emitter in the spot she likes to bark as a negative reinforcement for barking
@tidal bronze this thing still going strong
aside from having to refresh the browser after a couple of the many updates to HA over the time of having it, not had to do anything else
is that one of those cast dashboard views?
lenovo smart clock
I finally removed my alarm clock from my bedroom, I have an HA dashboard to configure the 'light alarm' in my bedroom and my snapcast automatically plays white noise when we turn off the lights for bed
just using this as a HA dashboard display
but it has google assist built in which is nice sometimes
When I have time I want to spin up an in-home LLM model on my server and add microphones to all the snapcast nodes around my house
I've booted all the smart speakers from my house long ago and don't miss them lol
I used to lodge with a guy that had google home speakers
Good lord, he got them more or less as they came out, they were paired with his google account. But they had no way to ID who was speaking and couldnt tell us apart
So while we were experimenting we discovered I could place alarms on his phone etc
Oh goody my ratgdo(s) no longer have enough room to accept new OTA updates?
Lol I guess they defined the wrong board with the new revision and it only thinks it's outta space
Yep, they are very nice.
They do get used so I am happy witg the time spent setting up
I've been mostly happy with the tablet I put in my kitchen, I do regret going cheap with a fire tablet tho it's kind of a fight to keep it from phoning home
Is there any good free MDM solutions for android out there?
as in connecting to amazon?
If I don't block it from the internet it tries to force me to log into an amazon account before showing the loader
ah
But fully kiosk still can auto launch over that lol
i guess you cant do a fresh instal on it? i assume its locked to that version of android
But it's still a horribly gimped device
There's not many jailbreak options for the current firmware amazon ships
ah
Android tablets are so cheap nowdays anyways
And if you do enroll with MDM you can have it not include any extra apps
And do a suuuuper clean device
But I'm not interested in paying monthly to manage a tablet in my kitchen lol
i was thinking of a waveshare touch panel with a remote pc.
but there are advantages to it being a self contained android tablet too
fully kiosk has amazing integration support with HA
There is a service call to send it to any given URL
Or just a switch entity to turn the screen on/off
hm
it's only $9 for life on a device too
so basically it makes the device seamlessly lod a website ap full screen? (quickjly looking it over)
yep
neat
So like doorbell gets rung? push a dashboard url or a camera stream straight to the device
I don't even use the official app on my tablet anymore as a result
Shoot, it's got better video playback in fully kiosk than even vlc does on an android tv
Know what's stupid? That a USB C plug acually fits in a USB A receptacle, and feels pretty good doing it.
That's nothing. Both USB-B and USB-A plugs fit nicely into RJ45 ports. "Universal" indeed
Also googling "usb rj45 meme" turned up this cursed object:

Just some light crunching, it's still good
I could sort of see a point to that if it was a female RJ45...
Oh yeah, USB 1.1 (usually) or 2.0 (rarely) over twisted pair baluns definitely work (janky, but functional), for some value of work
Definitely not advisable, but in a pinch
Lol I just got out of a vendor call, they tried to warn me "they're not the cheapest" but I don't think they know how much they undercut the other quotes I've gotten
I got some usb converter kits that came with those, they never worked
But the rest of the adapters in the kits did and that's what I wanted them for
Nebraska furniture Mart sells those Brilliant smart switches. The fucking two touch dimmer with screen is 500. Holy shit
Das a lot of money for a light switch
Their smart home selection is kind of nice tho. So many govee etc to actually look at rather than some jpg online is nice
They had a 55" Samsung Odyssey curved monitor setup and omfg. Gen x are going to go blind by age 30
Curved displays are good for exactly one person too
and aren't gen x already hitting 40? lol
30s millennial here
Shoot the youngest genx is technically 43ish lol
Meant Gen z
I'm right on the cusp but I claim the "oregon trail generation" aka the analog-to-digital generation
Or the even worse name for it lol: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xennials
Sad but true π¦
The raccoon business sector isn't keeping up apparently
Larger monitors are probably better for eyesight than smaller ones that us old geezers grew up with since you don't have to focus up close
Yea I don't agree with that. Go press your face against a big screen TV and tell me how relaxed your eyes are lol
55" monitor on a PC desk is too big and too close imo
IMHO 32" 4K is about right for normal on-desk viewing distances
You'll have less of a reason to press your face against the display with a larger display than you have with a smaller one
50cm upwards should be safe according to a quick google
Well that depends on resolution too
Yesn't. Do you watch higher resolution screens closer?
Ive had one on my desk for about 5 years but it's not my primary
nothing wrong with a good template. {{ true if (((states('input_number.days_in_month')|int - (now().day - 10 if now().day >= 10 else (states('input_number.days_in_month')|int - (10 - now().day)))) / states('input_number.days_in_month')|int) * 15 + states('sensor.glitch_data_used')|int) < 15 else false }}
bigger screen and high dpi means your still pressing your face to read shit lol
That's not my experience at all
It highly depends on the content and your personal preference though
my tiny 34" 1440p gaming monitor is about the same distance away as my previous 24" was and I don't think most people watch their 4k TV's from under 50cm either
34" is a far cry from 55"
I tried a 34" curved monitor once. didn't like it but there is no comparison between a 34 and 55 lol
4k 27 inch is perfect
55" is bit more than 4x the size of a 34" which is why I mentioned it. I think there's a limit on how close you want to comfortably get to before you will rather stay further away than maximize the pixels per degree of view
Our sight is pretty limited after all and having the screen too close causes all kinds of uncomfort
I have a 92" projector screen that I watch from 2.5m away most of the time, but I often notice myself leaning forwards when watching movies. It's because movies were made for big screen and stuff in you peripheral vision is of lower importance. The resolution is nor the size are the important factors here
movies ect and resolution of tvs is way diffrent
not to mention 8 ft is not the 1.5 or so a normal desktop monitor would be
Why is it different?
yes i did it. I got a daily and monthly data counter on my phone that turns red if im going over my daily quota
Eww data caps
Movies vs other content
just do the adb shell reboot -p command and keep yourself from going over automaticly
text, font.. web browser 99% of what you do on PC that you don't on a tv
it's that stuff that causes most eye strain
You can always run with 300% ui scaling lol
yea and see like a qtr of the whole page
dpi is weird on big monitors
Right, but at some point we reach(ed) what the human eye can do and then the text and font become irrelevant
ok well I think that was a few monitor sizes back..
I still see pixels on my 1440p
a 55" curved monitor that your keyboard sits inbetween the two ends is not healthy and as i stated Gen Z will be going blind lol
I'll need a source for that π
being able to see the individual pixels cannot be good lol
wut
That makes zero sense
I used to be able to see pixels on a retina display and now that shit's basically invisible to my older eyes lol
Human eyes are pretty shite. We figured that brain power is better spent elsewhere. It's not like other animals are being hurt by our shit screens
if you see shit that close.. there is an issue lol
What's the issue?
do you wear glasses?
I think there is a case for too much close-range focusing will cause myopia
If you never focus to a distance > 20 feet
I am 100% sure my eyes got worse during covid
Also old age does a number on everyone's eyes lol
They don't stand the test of time
old age isn't the issue
eye strain is
you can have eye strain and not even realize it
I do not
may wanna pick out a pair lol
Y tho lol
because they can
i get mine replaced every 3000 miles
is that ms flight sim?
It looks like a model swap on the real f1 game
oh
could be an unreal engine template. making a racing game takes like 20 mins and the enviros are often alreay avaialble
Formuladank would do that much work for a shitpost lol
Do you think you get eye damage from watching something like The Sphere from up close? Since that's what it looks like. Or well actually it's far worse
Sticking with the F1 theme here
one you don't stare at the sphere for multiple hours daily and two that is not the same as a monitor
How is it not the same?
look up the specs?
does all screens look the same to you?
you sure you don't wear glasses?
when you stare at a computer, your eyes are at a set focus distance for hours and hours on end. usually one very close to your face. with younger people its not that big a deal, but as you age the lenses become more resistant to deformation and it can take a long time for them to change focus. it sometimes takes several minutes for me to be able to focus on far things after working at my computer for hours.
Good lord... My point was the opposite of that The Sphere looks like a screen because we watch it from afar but up close it looks like shit. That doesn't mean it's going to hurt our eyesight if we look at these spread out LEDs at 3 feet
I don't see pixels on bigger monitors spread out like that tho
I noticed that in the last couple of weeks when they showed closeups of that dude climbing up it
density is too compact
it would be less eye strain if they were spread oput
and even though we may not consciously see the individual pixels on 4k or 8k or whatever. our eyes still do and are still impacted by it
So there's a threshold where it hurts your eyes because they are too spread out but not spread out enough? It's plausible but do you have anything to back this up since I've never seen it?
i have 0 doubts there are studies of how monitors damage our eyes online
Give it to me then
no
Right
thats dumb you want to disput that lol
strain has got little to nothing to do with the "monitor" and is about maintainign fixed focus.
that is the "strain". the muscles are literally straining.
there are things monitors can do that are hard to look at, like flicker, high contrast etc, but they are a different problem in you brain. eye strain is muscular.
getting glasses with the blue light filter may or may not be quite a relief to some of it
Flicker has been understated for sure. As someone who likes to run their screens pretty dim it annoys the hell out of me when they flicker
i cant use crt's, they would trigger migraines. and i cant do the sitting in the dark thing.
the dark thing is funny. half the studio whines its too bright, half whines its too dark. to thew point them made lighting zones. haha
Not even the high refresh ones? 120Hz CRTs were in many ways the high point for me. In many others not so much lol
the last crts i had were 72. we never had anything better and migrated to lcds as soon as they were acceptable
the crts were impossible to maintain colour correction as well so it was all the better
2004 or so was the last crt
i used
I went from 120 to 60Hz LCD. It was a sad day.
ha
if you game i can imagine. for me it was a big upgrade, cause i didnt really care about ghosting, lag, etc
dealing with 19-21" crt's was not fun
the apple cinema display (and equivelant pc monitors using the same LG panesl) was the first "acceptable" consumer monitor for us
tv's of same size weren't nearly as heavy
sony 24" crt
mmm
thats the last crt for pro use ever made. some people were so upset
i thik it wqent away in 2006 or so.
You can only make me so hard
ha
we have a few but i didnt have one on my desk. i had viewsonic 21's
have used dell P series since 2004 now. 24 and 30"
they had reliable colour
well reliable "enough"
Dell U and P series monitors are actually really good value for money
And they always have boring standard stands with VESA mount conversion options, not bizarro shit
(looking at you here especially, Samsung)

Edible Arrangements
Found these Persian pink roses. She's not that mad I am not home. But I messed up on getting reservations for the weekend. Still at it.
They suck most of the time. Sour pineapple and grapes. Yuk.
Maybe a drive-in? It's easier when you can manage your own reservations
shari's berries, now with more mold!

i stumbled on a reddit thread a while back and damn

A Camemberry
i looked at strawberries today. $10 a pound. sigh
Been ages and we don't do drive in or drive through
you doing work there?
i designed everything there in another life. my friend owns most of the drive ins around here.
(i didnt design the buildings, they are form the 50s, but i did the revamp)
in 1999/2000 ish
i used to do his buyers screenings too, which was fun
i guess once sun is down* you want that shit dark tho
he wanted for that theatre to stay to a 50's sensibility. so real neon, etc
this place prints money, so he just wants what he wants,
which is cool
We have a real gas tube decorative sign in our office kitchen. It is a very nice shade of red.
I mean LED ones are fine, but really are no comparison for the real thing
There are some pretty convincing LED rope diffusers that look like neon from a distance
he went out and got quotes from a big design firm here and they drew up a modern diner with a bunch of random 50s ish decor. complete opposite of what he wanted
oh so a fridays but 50s shit stapled to the wall?
lol
I've also been trying to convince the higher-ups that we need to drop ~$100k on a split-flap display.
There's this company that makes them: https://www.oatfoundry.com/split-flap/
Scales in increments of 1 row Γ 8 columns, I think the quote was $96k for 32Γ6.
(for the design fee)
Ive thought about printing my own
There are a few designs online
There is one for home use
wow. almost every "changable" sign now is just an lcd or led.
3200 bucks lol
Just $3,295
The best part about those is the noise they make while changing display
my brothers grocery store got all e paper price tags a couple years ago. the price must have been insane. they have like 1000 locations and 1000s of items on the shelves
Tho I'd maybe rather have a flipdot display if I was going mechanical
Yeah that is a large part of why I want it. Still remember the racket the old airport departure boards made
ha
Flip digits split flaps old fashioned retro gas pumps industrial displays. Go back in time and feel the magic.
Curious combination of ideas, a mechanical 7-segment
I assumed you meant this kind: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip-disc_display
The flip-disc display (or flip-dot display) is an electromechanical dot matrix display technology used for large outdoor signs, normally those that will be exposed to direct sunlight. Flip-disc technology has been used for destination signs in buses across North America, Europe and Australia, as well as for variable-message signs on highways. I...

More shed work. the one on the right is my existing "huge" steel framed shed. doesnt look so huge now.
When did you add a deck to a shed lol
Thereβs overkill and thereβs the shed with stairs to its front door
those must be some wealthy raccoons
racoons need nice housing too
if i build it for my yard, it will basically be a dining room / bunkie guest room with the outdoor kitchen. not allowed to have a bathroom. the other shed is office work shop / cnc machine shop
"The tree of smart home must be refreshed from time to time with the tears of Tuya & MyQ users"
hasn't tuya got a little better over this past year?
i thought they had made more local abilities available etc
I think, better doesn't mean good π
my tuya 433/zigbee relays have been working great so far (knock on wood) thankfully no wifi involved
wish I could say zigbee was working great lol
Kinda wonder why some of their stuff bugs out so randomly
low budget, shit engineering
Like id expect theyd do it right once and then sell it cheap en mass
Ah more profits that way
if you're forced to build the cheapest product possible you will cut corners everywhere you can
which is what happens to tuya
meets bare minimum certificaiton, nothing more
and then they try to pull you into their cloud scam to sell you more stuff and make you dependent on it
tuya is certianly not the only company who does any of what you just said
when i was in NFM yesterday we walked past these stuffed dogs and they made them motion activated to make a wimper noise.. talk about fucked up marketing geared towards kids lol
buy our extended cloud storage now, every time you open their app
has on board storage for at least a month but only allows 1 day of viewing back
They found a better solution for ours
To install a microsd you must open the camera and void the warranty
bruh
Even if they would be like yea no issue with that, you'd still have unsealed the whole assembly and added a ton of moisture
A smart design to sell some more
Well it's not apple, id probably not be buying some more π
thankfully i have not seen anything like that
