Very few know they live in a shitty place.
lololol
It's basically impossible for an american to retire in canada, y'all don't want us
Once you stop working they boot you unless you marry a citizen lol
oh, that. yeah. actually just up and moving here is not easy
i think we only allow that from other countries under the king
Yeah americans don't have a path anymore
nz for example
It used to be having 10mill was enough
But the chinese kinda fucked that loophole over
And they closed that path
americans can come under special work allowances. like VFX
but it can take many years for approval
no, what i mean it apply of PR
i dont mean work permit
I strive to be an unproductive retiree
technically you do have to work of course for those first few year
varies by country too. people from india are fast trackes. US and japan are slow
I had a coworker who him and his wife were seriously exploring countries to retire to and he was like "there's no path for US citizens to live in canda after retiring"
maybe some slim lottery path
ahh
dunno about that
dont know anyone that old
hehe
mostly in my industry people shuffle around different studios
but often they want to stay here permanently in canada.
i know at least one amercian with no intention of going back
I mean if you can find someone to marry perhaps lol
ha
Just life.
she did... but i dont think she wants to take her new wife back to the south (i forget which state she is from)
Elaborate
we used to have a map on the wall with tack for all the locations of our people. so many countries covered.
One thing for sure I don't ever won't to live in a place that rains all the time and gloomy AF like Seattle
Just life.
weather is relatively low down my list when i pick a city to live. i definitely prefer cold to hot
mostly i go by how much i get paid there haha
Missing a few ingredients there
I've known sunbirds who couldn't stand it up here, they needed to be in LA or they were freezing to death
Paid? As in wages?
What's that?
paid as in, how my will they pay me to move
100k... i stay here. 200k.. i answer email...
ha
id need quite a lot of motivation to move
Worked for myself since 2000 I don't know what that means. Someone paying for me to do things......
someones always paying, regardless of the structure
I pay others. I would be sad if someone paid me
anyhow
no pretty sure she is a 49'er
You a swifty?
luckily my job doesnt really need moving

no i last longer than 30 seconds
Tbf, my life goal is island life, not whatever I deal with here.
i saw an island for sale a few years abck
I heard winners are from Kansas ?
Is this true?
People think a little rain = doom and gloom lol
a 20 min boat ride off vancouver island
heard from where? what? I thought you were an introvert that didn't watch the news?
If yoh think Seattle is little rain. You need a raincheck bud.
That tweet
It's definitely the clouds that get you here, the ones that go with the 8 hours of sun you get in the winter.
rain makes my peaches grown nice
Wow that went south quick
It's actually true! Seattle gets less rain than...I think it was Chicago?
ah then yea we won the superbowl yet again
We averge like 38 inches of rain a year here, LA is like 15 lol
yes but LA has it all in 6 days
I wouldn't even want to transit in Seattle
The clouds are why I have home assistant and ambient lighting haha
Yes we know what you think of everything that isn't LA lol
toronto has 32" of rain and snow
Oh there are beautiful places like LA but Seattle is not one of those places. Sorry.
vancouver is 47"
ew
ha
weirdly, every single tim ive been to vancouver it has been pure blue skies
Everything in life is subjective, including my opinion of you lol
Canada is not even in the beautiful map other than some photoshop pictures of Banf
alright, were done here
To agree with this, Seattle itself is awful. It's the beautiful state around it that I love.
Dollars and cents says everything about anything. Our opinion matters 0
I live in unincorporated Redmond, I am one with the trees, not concrete.
I found a spot in seattle where I can barely see civilization, but somehow 5 min from downtown
My back yard is trees and mountains
im on top of a cliff.
Wowza. I watch YT for this.
this is my yard
I was thinking about building a pond in my side yard
i wouldnt mind a pond, but i dont want to maintain it. that waterfal is in the park about 1km away
the bike pic is downtown toronto
Very few know they live in a shitty place.
tihs has become very apparent...
Sadly yes.
imagine thinking LA was nice.
Lol
ha. so i looked up where my my grandmother lived on the BC coast, and it gets 100 inches of rain a rear.
Oh totally
your an expert aren't you? lol
Sadly, traveling a lot .makes you see things.
just a few km from alaska. (the islands that dip down)
@dire spear talking about backyards. 😆
well you shouldn't ever try and compare china to anywhere else lol
looks liek a wasteland
wheres the forest?
Lmao dude from Toronto
im not from toronto
Oh
i work in toronto
Everything has to be compared to China. Come on now.
Photoshopped
Yes it is.
that's some serious color manipulation there
Sorry man.
saturation @ 11
genuinely not really.
Highlights and shadows are clipping so bad.
Flat as fuck and real. Good.
Hmm still not real.
ha
Have you been to Banff?
thats nat geo pic. rating it in the top 10 lakes in the world
sadly i sold the condo there after my dad died. my aunt sill lives there.
its full of orchards and vinyards there
i tried to get my dad to swap the condo for a house overlooking the lak, but he was too old and wouldnt go for it
Good it's not California but I will believe what you are trying to say.
Orchards and vineyards 👍
Must be good like wine fron Washington state.
some pretty highly sought after wine from there.
Sought after by locals?
the world. the valley does go down into washington.
i think the us side is more od a desert
Any on James Suckling 2023 let me know. I will be very interested
wine tours
Not interested in BC rating own wine LMAO
@dire spear I am messing with you man. There's nothing to compare to California or California wine. Just having fun.
califorina wine is the stuff we serve to the help
Ok
😛
i dont drink wine. my dad and aunt made wine
around where i live we have lots of ice wines
We don't call any of our team players the help. Guess it's different in Canada 🙄
team players? you mean like the gardner?
Yes never the help.
the uber driver is a team player? lol
pretty sure they don't look at it like that lol
Of course. I would be nothing without Uber
not sure whats worse, calling workers the help, or pretending they are team players while refusing to give them a living wage. (generalisation, not you, just as a whole)
like walmart calling their employees associates
You must be referring to Midwest.
I hope you know the .minimum wage in California
yes, poor
its about the same as here
What the minimum wage there?
Lol Seattle is $19.97/hr now
It's 12.50 there and 18 here. What's the same you talking about about.
Some industries it's $20
oh, interesting, californai has wages by city
not overall
I asked GPT for a stereotypical LA image lol
@dire spear talk about what you know 🤣
i know about pizza
Meh
in any case, 20 isnt enough
of course i can, i lived there. its way more expensive and even here
Lol says the guy judging everyone’s town
I lived in most of these places.
So yep. I will speak my mind
min wage hike fucked everything up imo
"What is the minimum wage in California? Effective January 1, 2024, the minimum wage is $16.00 per hour for all employers. Some cities and counties have higher minimum wages than the state's rate"
meow
poor angelino's.. dissed by everyone anymore
too bad you people can't go back to the 80's
@forest edge why go back. You are living 80s
toronto is pretyt unaffordable right now. even if you make 100k
but your not and that's the problem lol
Dude I should not start drinking too early. Over slept last night and missed the flight. Missed AM flight drinking at the lounge. Hopefully I will wakeup to land on this flight. 🤣🤣
this is why your view of your state is so skewed.. your whole vision is blurry lol
I have to agree.
I blame my wife for last nigbt. I should've known better not to challenge her with Tequila shots.
...
she's working with that pet place to kill you off quicker for your money lol
More power to them as long as it's sudden
as much as you drink it's probably a toss up 50/50 between a stroke and heart attack lol
strokes are not fun. had family members that had that.. messed up way to live afterwards
I don't think 2 to 4 bottles of wine is abnormal. Isn't that not normal wine consumption?
in a hour?
Lol.
Day.
2-4 bottles of wine a day per person is what is called in the medical field "dead man walking"
All lies
how many milliliters in a bottle?
Its the best water substitute
Well that and coffe.
750ml
No no... For dead people it would be: "All lie"
i remember hearing about a woman that died after drinking 10L of diet coke a day. and people were blaming the coke... youd die as well just from 10l of water a day.
i think around only 300mil a day is considered ok health wise
That's before and after meal ratings.
my doctor once told me I should take a thimble shot of whiskey a day to help clear out my kidneys lol
I know what that is like from my dad. Out of jokes, I take health seriously. Told my GP text me if any of my numbers are off on quarterly tests. Will quit anything on a dime. But until such time.....parrrrrtyyyyy
aren't california doctors coked out tho?
Lol 1/3rd of heart arrhythmias are diagnosed by the person dropping dead
i wouldn't call that alert but ok
Hyper alert, sorry.
This lifestyle if not made for village people.
Dropping dead is a also a cool factor. Come on now.
the radon company that came out to inspect how to plump my house didn't call me back today..i bet those asshats think my house would be too close to the equal amount of work to pay ratio lol
my uncle died of a heart attack twice
1 hour to Detroit, why do I do this to myself 😕
Plump?
you don't karma does it as part of your punishment
wtf is plump?
oh i see i mistyped
plumb
first time feeling anything under 70?
toasty
It's 42 in the AM but 70 by 9:45AM
41 daytime ? What's up with that?
the technical term is winter
you know michigan is in the north right?
its warm
If 41 daytime is warm you are also coming from a village
this is why LA will likely be the first place to hit over 200f due to global warming
anything avobe 0f is warm this time of year
With global warming eventually Seattle will be the new LA lol
“I think I’m at the wrong burning man”
Nothing to worry. We will be the 1st ones to come up with a fix. Just like 97% that's important and vibrant in your life Is made and maintained by your loving California
Yep, you're welcome ♥️
Secrets of all that sand and 70 degree weather 🤣
like what? most tech is coming out of Texas now haven't you heard?
california dosen't really provide anything else anymore
Get over your TX bs.
face it, your state has dropped the ball and you guys will never get it back
Never. Was ranting about Tesla and TX for ages and the dude had to come back crawling.
he sent back a small portion because of cheap tx deals
Like I told you many times you ain't going to see anything but CA in your lifetime
there is nothing of CA in my life cept those who fled your state lmao
please convince them to go back, please
my phone was made in china
Runs California
my os was made in china likely lol
Sorry man
Do something productive other than cattle. Then we can talk.
Texas, that's your pipe dream.
Nothing real.
it's just the way of the world now,m you should accept it
Nopes.
i know truth is hard and hurts but it's time for you to accept it
your graphs will change just give it time, you guys had years but dropped the ball so it takes time to reflect that
Sorry Village People talking about Village People
all the chip manufacturing plants in texas wasn't built in a day lmao
does California even have any banks that aren't being taken over by the federal goverment?
We will continue this when you understand what a trillion is.
Trillian of financial and ecological mistakes? oh we know lol
Sorry bud. TX, not this lifetime. Bow down to CA and move along.
This channel right now
it's already happened.. sticking your head in the sand didn't change the outcome lmao
Go, double check the water levels in the water troughs
Where's the Lululemon stuff?
silly angelino water issue's were never an issue for anyone other than you people lol
When are you going to get in that greyhound and head over here?
when it requires a boat to complete the travel destination
Had too much fun today. Gotta get on another flight. Till next time 👊
didnt you just arrive in detroit?
wtf.. did you land. hit the airport vending machine then get back in line to board another plane?
The Texas one should definitely be more drunk and have mange or something
And like six cars backed up behind it honking for it to get out of the left lane if it's going to do 10 under
Though neither state's drivers know how to drive in snow when they come here
The bulb behind him should be burned out too
Also all the animals behind him should be taxidermied and mounted on the wall
@tidal bronzesince you spend so much time going to china we need to figure out some way for me to buy shit and you bring it back to the states for me lol
Like a chinese raccoon
I don't think racoons survive in china.. get eaten too quick
they are missing out
are starlight cameras called something else now?
just what the nerds have been missing https://youtu.be/1vWJZiRv818?si=usQnzesj9VvYOIui

Hikvisions?
There are full color
Colorvu
Darkfightrr
So many names for them now
is Darkfightrr a real thing?
hikvision cameras are expensive here. I thought that company was on the US banned list at one point too
gross they made 10 amp circuits legal
Ew that's only 1100w for you guys on 110v
it's ew cause in the future to cut cost builders will run 10amp wire on 10 amp circuits to lights etc thus making it impossible for a home owner to be able to diy tie into those lines for added uses
do you need more than 1100W for home lights?
it's against code to put a receptacle on anything less than 15 amp. so everything would have to be wired directly
not only that but 200amp is generally the max per structure for residential so when you start filling slots with 10 am breakers that are restricted you rob yourself
some builder comes through places like kitchen lights on a 10 amp circuit where as maybe only half of that is being used if that you are still stuck with that full 10 that cannot really be used for anything else
I saw that peekaboo Frenck

whatever this new trend where they are making disposable led fixtures is annoying too
some of them are at least designed to fit into/cover up an existing can light with a socket adapter but many of them don't have that
Most of those led lights have no replaceable bulbs
Yes I want to replace the whole fixture every two years because that surely is worth not using the light heaters
all my lights are standard E27, GU10 etc
if by light heaters you mean incandescent that is irrelevant. led socket bulbs existed before these throw away things
No it really isn't. If I need to pay more to replace a fixture when the lamp breaks then I would have saved in electricity it simply isn't worth it
I gladly go back paying less than a buck a lamp in that regard
well you do pay more to replace the fixture with what I am talking about vs just replacing the bulb in a standard fixture that dosen't get replaced
but thats the new trend
disposable fixtures
instead of fixtures that are designed around acceptable socket type bulbs, they are leaning more toward an complete fixture with like led strips which can only be tossed upon failure
Yea
that whole thing has to be tossed
That doesn't even make any light when it's working
I got this
novelty lights are a little different. they are trying to make normal lights used in a home in that same form factor which is dumb
Oof,
This morning I left the house late because my oldest didn't need to be dropped off at school so I just had to drop off my youngest... I'm in the face of break everything to fix everything... And I haven't cleaned out all the automations and everything out of my Google home.
Well last time I had a, break something moment with Google home if a device wasn't available or multiple devices weren't available it just said that device is not available once...
Apparently now it says it for every single device that is not available and so one of the automations I had was for Google to turn off all of the lights in the house, or at least just about all the lights in the house... So Google started having only what could be described as a " this device is not available" seizure
My husband has been working nights the last 2 weeks so apparently this has been doing this since I started breaking everything... And he just.. hasn't said anything.. Just send listening to Google say this device is not available 30 times twice a day when I'm not home..
lmao, what? Is your husband an NPC 🤣
My family won’t always tell me when stuff isn’t working right lol
Mine will tell me something isn't working when it is in fact working
if these weren't just oversized sheds i would be a little impressed https://youtu.be/fCtKYCe-GXU?si=tBMHlwXiVEOMAPOq

none of the joints are glued or nailed or nothing
Lol I just realized why you wanted that cat in a hat @solar zealot
one earthquake and that house may fall like cards lol

Are they using any crazy joins?
There are nail free designs that are quite good
Just see Japan
they are using mortise joints on the support beams
the joints weren't even that long
almost looked like dirt they were using as insulation for the roof
So it doesn’t hurt as much when it collapses on you? Lol
Damnit I can see my lawn growing already… stop it I’m not ready to mow in February!
I looked into those already
I have a pretty steep slope on my side yard
I’d have to buy their most stupidly expensive model to do that hill
Also don’t you have to bury a wire for those?
Last I looked they had one GPS model that wasn’t even in the US
I don’t think GPS is accurate enough for most yards either
just get some goats
I do want to rent a herd for my extended yard
goats and chickens. carefree yard with no bugs
I tried renting goats from one guy and he’s like “you’re too far away from me, just go buy a goat at auction and return it when you’re done”
I was like…. What???
I don’t even know if I’d be allowed to own a goat in the city lol
one way to find out
'yea this goat you know, it doesn't work properly'
I live on a hill so steep I’ve never walked my own property line, I could see the goats escaping down the hill to the neighbors lol
He’s like “the auction will take it back for free when you’re done” lol
I love goats
sorry you can only get auction credits or a refurbished replacement
goat to sell, low milage and nearly unused grass clippers
unless you have the GOAT goat
There is someone called “the goat lady” on the island by me who specializes in renting them
Wouldn't that make it a sheep
Lol
Baaaa
What if I don’t want the wool tho lol
What am I gonna do, get out a spinning wheel
Well the wool less premium goat would be a cow
They also eat more grass but they make more of a mess aswell
Lol I need goats to eat the blackberry and knotweed on my steep hill
Goats are the GOAT for steep slopes
I don't believe a fence can stop them if they easily walk up a dam
The goat rental sets up temporary fencing to bound them in supposedly
No idea what they use to contain a herd of 20-30 lol
u haul but for goats
I should book them before they’re busy all spring
My hill goes insane in the spring
Is there a money back guarantee if they are picky eaters and won't eat the right things?
Probably lol https://www.rentaruminant.com/
It’s simple, just own goats!
I need to take some pictures and order some goats already
you want the miniature ones. a lot easier to fence in
https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-ms-01?variant=44385972093173 damn this little box is a beast
lmao, that will thermal throttle in 0.1 s
Seems like it's got a bit of cooling hardware but no idea what an i9 needs these days lol
base config requires watercooling
you could turn the voltage and or baseclock down
Lol when did water cooling become the standard? Granted I've only owned servers or laptops for the last two decades
ever since intel decided the only way it could keep up with AMD was to increase power limits to absurd levels
Ahh lmao
love my 5950x, its so efficient
Not like amd doesn't run insane power limited
wut
Are we gonna have the processor wars in here today
every day
AMD >
O-o
its from red vs blue
oh i know. but amd is usually bottom
Ah yes, some nice tactical crouching there.
we were forced to play halo games and watch red vs blue for "research" at the office. such hard days
i had to watch all the cinematic videos on youtube too
I did that for fun. Was I doing it wrong???
not getting paid for 3 years
ha
4 years maybe
hmmm
i started that show in late 2017 and it aired in 2021.
Never actually watched that show, but I see the RT reviews have the audience fairly split on it
Given 99% of halo's popularity came from how good it's netcode was lol, the plot was always pretty thin
h2 had a very good overall story
but for tv, they felt (wrongly maybe) they needed more character focus
which on its own is fine
but then they made some big sweeping changes to the story and behaviors of certain characters
One review was like "not my master chief" lol
then MS/343 actually stepped in to try and bring is back
so what you see in the show is AFTER it was made more in line with the games
thats part of why it took 4 years
TV shows going off the rails from the source content? say it aint so!
hehe
on the tech side. ships, etc we stayed super close to the games. most of the bg ships are literally assets i reprocessed form blur's H2A
bungee was already very inconsistent with their stuff anyyay though.
Plot designed by committee lol
Halo (the games, never saw the show) had about as much plot Starship Troopers, imo.
Lol starship troopers had more plot
when i redesigned the longsword i found out that there were 2 different ones. one being pelican size, and one being 3x bigger.
That's not a good thing for Halo, lol
Too many people miss that starship troopers is really written as a parody
ha
halo has quite some lore, both from the videogames and the books
well no, that wasnt the plot
Ain't nobody got time for that side lore lol
soren came from the books i think
The original Halo games had tasks that needed to be completed to get to the next tasks, they didn't have really lore beyond the factions in it simply existing and being at war.
then you weren't paying attention while playing lol
Too many people think Starship Troopers is meant to be a parody (including the director and many of the critics). 😁
halo 1 i think wqs kinda basic. halo 2 especially anniversary ahd a pretty deeep story (for a game)
Well satire really
It was a video game from an early era of video games when gameplay was prioritized above story, it really doesn't have much of a plot.
Not an original one by any strech lol
I didn't say there wasn't a plot, I said it was a shallow plot.
Bare minimum needed to wrap fun gameplay around
like I said, you didnt pay attention
k
You're just looking at it with rose tinted glasses.
And remembering it with nostalgia.
How much of that was from the books lol
me
ha
It's like the people who try to make arguments about how Star Wars did address some plot hole because some random extended universe book Lucas never even heard of spent three sentences on it.
I get why some franchises get all that extended lore, but I've yet to get into any side-lore ever lol
Extended lore always seemed like sanctioned fan fiction to me
Too hard to keep a consistent universe with that many cooks in the kitchen
my friend after episode 2 trailer came out said "i didnt write it, i just made the pretty space ships"
You basically need a full time autistic lore manager
Big issue of why I quit following Dr Who, heh.
kenneth
(and no, im not kidding, he would write novels to us on scale, ship type, etc)
Some shows pull that off well but none of them have these absurd extended universes where any author with an idea can search and replace their characters with in-universe characters and have it go.
i think he worked there from bungee all the way to infinite
star wars has no lore manager
they have chaos
Hence why Disney had to retroactively make 30 years of extended universe non-canon
Lol star wars basically invented side lore
my friend is still there, althogh hes mostly doing the marvel shows now
Though I suspect the extended universe stuff would have been better source material than what Disney's been making lately
disney is monitoring this chat im sure... but yeah, they seems to be all over the place. thats one of the issues when they are trying to make liek 4 shows a year vs 1 every 3
new spider movie seems to be getting horrible reviews.
Is he home yet? I've lost track
i think we are at the end of the comic movie trail and they need to pull back for a bit
Or this is the she version
maddam web
like even the trusted objective movie reviewers hate it
ive only done 4 comic based things i think. 3 were horrible, one is good. haha. done a good amount of game stuff. also usually horrible.
I think the biggest issue with comic book movies lately is that they stagnated so long and tried going on the same action thriller formula and now since everyone is tired of that all the changes they try to do to make the abstract magical universes seem fresh seem silly and absurd instead.
Meh, that's definitely a runon sentence.
the genre hopping i like, but i agree after 10 years of relentless explosion focussed movies they are a bit jarring
The only superhero anything I still watch is "The Boys"
It definitely exceeds the daily quota of superheroes
I watched the second season of Loki and it didn't disappoint but I think the last superhero movie I saw before that was Black Adam
Which was alright but suffered from the rock sucking
thats the 1 "good" one in my list haha
esplodin heads and homelanders lasers
I watched like an hour of dr strange multiverse of madness before turning it off. It came out not too long after I got a VR headset and had a (very poorly done) 3D release I tried out.
Maybe this VR headset will add a dimension to the plot that didn't exist
Nah, it was one of those really lazy 2D->3D conversions where they basically just cut everyone out and layer them on the scenery like pieces of cardboard
3d needs to go away
closes one eye
they are all conversions now. noone shoots with real 3d cameras
It either needs to go away or movies need to be actually shot in 3D, 2D->3D conversions suck
Eventually they'll just AI hallucinate the 3d lol
i did RE4/5 with real 3d cameras. it was horrific production wise, but the result is good. (not the plot).
i did saw 7 in stereo camera too, but they botched the rig so bad it was unwatchable
I can only speak from a niche consumer PoV but I liked 3D. I had a 3DS I always ran 3D on, I had a 3D headset for my phone in like 2016 I'd watch 3D movies on, I saw 3D movies in theaters a few times
Part of the problem was I had no way to legally play a 3D movie on any of the platforms I had
I liked GotG in 3D a lot, it was well done and the 3D worked
i cant see 3d so i dont care one way or the other, but the process of doing it 'right" for live action is not worth the effort for the most part
lightfield recordings when
that was a conversion too. same method as dr strange.
what happens in some movies is they try to make 3d a "feature" and thats when it fails
vs just being enhanced viewing
I think the parts of GotG I remember popping were all CGI things like huds and CGI characters
even the full cgi is often a conversion (although i dont specifically know about that one)
Other than that the only 3D movie I remember looking really great was Avatar
about 6-7 years ago it just got dropped full stop
avatar was the same rig ad resident evil
Yea, I've given up on 3D.
it was done well
bad movie, haha but good 3d
i worked on 5 of the 6
bleh
but 4 was the big stereo one
i had to do a 3-4 min sequence in rain, while correcting millas bad acting
i hate 3d
haha
There's also been things like injected shader hacks to morph games and add 3D based on lighting depth maps for a while that work to add 3D to some old games
but thats kinda why we dont bother now. that cost SO much extra money
That and the consumer experience is been almost resoundingly shitty for 3D
All the theaters with glasses where you come out with tired eyes, or expensive equipment that cuts you off from reality
3d won't go anywhere before there are good volumetric displays if you ask me
If they made a large single person 3DS screen I'd buy it
If the bigscreen beyond offered anything over my current headset asides from being small I'd consider it too
I'm pretty sure they have desktop monitors that are glasses free like that already
I'd totally go to a theater for a glasses-free 3d experience
But really that tech is still just a clever way of splitting the signal optically
I'm talking true volumetric displays tho is what needs to happen
I'd love to have an ultrawideNdeep monitor lol
isnt that impossible? i thought that only worked for a single user
i dont remember anymore
I remember something about one that could do like three people, but they're definitely not going to work for a theater full of people
ah
And I don't think that ever actually came to market, I couldn't find it when I looked a while back
For it to be multi-perspective it's gotta be something where it's rendering things with true depth
Like if you could have a thousand-layer display for example
lenticular screen
Or one of those rotary style volumetric displays
the 3ds was basically lenticular
There have been some very basic volumetric displays using focused lasers to ionize light
we used to have this cool 3d tech where they would make the screen like 40 ft deep, and put the actors in it
I kinda liked 3d movies but the effect breaks down with any translation of the image
With photogrammetry it might be possible to better create those types of scenes but I'm sure that tech is far far into the future. It's still pretty cool stuff though
6 degrees of freedom on a 2D screen offers much more convincing 3d effect than 3d movies ever could
light field movies

Hey, has anyone played around with android 14 routines? I want to make a web request when I wake up and go to sleep, using Samsung health's sleep detection. I see there's a section where I can look at the custom actions all my installed apps have registered (currently only some actions from the clock app). I was wondering if anyone knew of an app that would make a web request? Thanks!
@tidal bronze there is nothing beautiful about your city lol https://youtu.be/m1q6Lo_LuP0?si=knuvcSJseRB2ayrl
I fly an airplane above 10,000 feet to film Los Angeles from a new perspective rarely seen before. Because of the airspace restrictions of LAX, it's difficult to fly over many parts of the city, especially at altitudes above a couple thousand feet. So I put some cameras on a small airplane and went above the LAX airspace restriction of 10,000 ...
Fun, opened up a subpanel I hadn't been in since moving in and found one of the breakers wasn't tightened right and was arcing/melting
o well, I didn't need that circuit anyways
I might've noticed earlier if I had ever once used the outlet it's wired to
But I don't really find many uses for a 240v only 6-20R outlet
6-20R? 🤔
Winking lol
I didn't think to explicitly look for a neutral but I saw a red and a black going to the breaker for it so it might be wired with 12/3 and just need the outlet replaced to get 120v
oh wow, that's ugly
might have been for a kiln. those use to be all the rage
It had an A/C hooked to it when I got it but somebody had smashed in the A/C and broke a refrigerant line
ah
I put another A/C in but it's only a 120v A/C so it's on another circuit
Also never gets used
pre ran 240v lines are nice especially in certian locations
I want to put a L14-20R on it which I can either run 240v appliances off of or break out into two 120v 20a circuits with something like https://www.amazon.com/Parkworld-60868-Adapter-Generator-Receptacle/dp/B07S4CM8KW/
Funky plug because it twists to lock
sounds over complicated
Er, that block is the wrong plug
Yea but I won't have to pull wires, I can use what's there
technically you don't have to pull wires regardless. you already said you ran a 110v line for a diffrent thing so just leave the 240v dormant
Right now I have to unplug the A/C when I want to run 120v power tools out there
I want more 120v outlets
Yea, if the 240v circuit cable only has two conductors and a ground I'll reidentify one as neutral and wire it up as a normal 120v outlet
But if it has three then I can get two separate 120v circuits out of it and leave 240v available too
what size is the breaker? I think those funky outlets are only lik 20amp
Current breaker is 20a
30a from service to subpanel, 20a from subpanel to this 240v outlet, and 15a to two other 120v circuits.
it's likly just a black, white and ground wire like maybe 10 gauge
I definitely saw a red wire but I didn't think to look if there was a neutral for it too
I'll go do that, now I'm curious.
if there was a red then yea.. you'll have a black and white as well.. i have never seen any cable with just like a black and red etc
Yea, it's 12/3
It's coming off of a subpanel already. Should run a 20a circuit.
with 12g i would just convert to 110v and forget about it. not too many 240v appliances require that few of amps
I might. I was thinking I could do a 4 gang loaded up with 120v outlets too.
easily. i have more than that off one 20amp on 12g in this house
omg the forest is an amazing game
I didnt even play it
never played it. i played the first one tho
but Sovietwomble made a 4 hour video about how the game is shit
and that video was amazing

It talks through several survival games that suddenly got a story
and it talks about the story of the forest
that dosen't have racoons
This is the level of depth the video takes
Hmm, a l14-20r and a tether to break it out to four 5-20r's is cheaper than four 5-20r's and a 4 gang box.
Also wtf home depot why do you only have expensive ass gfci 5-20r's
cheaper on amazon
why would you need a gfi?
i see 20 amp outlets on lowes for like 4 bucks
that game is great. Played through it completely several times with friends
Eh, swapping to a single $8 outlet and a $16 tether with 4 5-20r's sounds a lot easier than replacing a 1 gang box with a 4 gang box, finding a 4 gang in use cover for it, and wiring 4 5-20r's in it
Plus the former lets me keep 240v if I ever need it
well whatever. technically you could just put a single outlet and use extensions if needed lol
even get some surge protection on the cheap doing that
Something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005HSLDDS
Generator Locking Extension Cord Locking 20A 125/250V to Straight Blade 15A/20A 125V, With "T" terminal-fitting, NEMA 5-20R Flabellate connector, Quaternity Outlet NEMA L14-20P male plug, Max Power: 5000W Rating 20A 125/250V to 20A 125V Cable SJTW 10/4 Cord Length 1.5ft Configuration NEMA L14-20P...
Not really an extension
More of an adapter

they make all kinds
you could get one with usb ports or whatever
swing out outlets which are nice
plus it completely covers the box so you don't even need a faceplate when you screw it on
7 buck 20 amp breaker, 4 buck 20 amp outlet and one of those
super cheap
That dongle I linked will give me two 120v 20a circuits from a l14-20r for ~4800W of power, that one you posted is ~1,800W max
The more I read back on this convo, the more I appreciate living in a single phase country
that one i posted only used one of the outlets
so I'd have a 120v outlet with out of phase hot on top and bottom?
That's got to be a code violation, lol.
wut? it's all connected to the same outlet
I have two opposing 120v legs and a neutral, if I use them all I can get functionally two 120v circuits from it
For twice the wattage of just running a normal 120v circuit
Yea, like it's already wired. Two 120v breakers with a shared neutral
its possible i've seen it
It's fine
not sure why you would want to do that tho
because it lets me use existing wiring and get 5000w from it
a single 20amp breaker can handle a whole lot of shit. i doubt you would ever need a double
I have a single 20 amp outlet at my workbench in the garage and one outlet is plugged into one of those power bars with 10 outlets on it and I ran two space heaters and a work light off that one outlet and never tripped the breaker
There'll be times there's a space heater running out there with an air compressor and 1500w of fishtank heaters and a circular saw or drill press or whatever
And a shop vac
well then yea if your doing all that shit
I'm not trying to get more outlets out there for the hell of it
although that sounds like more than just two single 20 amp breakers can handle
I have two 15a breakers too
8/3 running from the service panel to subpanel (though currently on a 30a breaker in the main box for some reason), and 2x20 and 2x15a in the subpanel
but you can do it, just break the tab that connects them
Yea, I just looked it up, it looks fine
I have seen those extenders like i linked with double plugs so I wonder if those do actually split
infact i may have one here
i can't go unplugging them to check, they being utilized
Hmm, I might go with a split receptacle with each outlet on opposite phases then. All I'd need for that is a single 5-20r.
Easy to spot when I got my friend's fishtanks off of a 50' extension cord
I know for a fact they make those extenders with duel plugs, for what your doing i don't know if thats why but you could just use these instead https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Splitter-Grounded-SPS1630W-37/dp/B07X3NT2Z7/ref=sr_1_23?keywords=dual%2Bplug%2Boutlet&qid=1707905652&sr=8-23&th=1
When you need more power turn to the Philips Grounded 3-Outlet Tap With three grounded AC outlets each wall adapter transforms your existing outlet into a centralized location for all of your compatible devices Perfect for your home office or workstation this powerful accessory is a great way to ...
one in each outlet
lose the ability to securly screw it to the outlet tho
I'm not really trying to get a ton of outlets there, I just want to get literally any outlets there that I can use.
The 6-20r there now is useless to me
20 amp outlet is a waste with just one thing plugged to it unless it's something that draws that much which right now the only thing I think that gets remotly close for 110v is a hair dryer
those are even rated for 15 amp
but think they pull at the top of the watts around the 1800 mark
Isn't the max something can be listed for a 15a receptacle for limited to something really conservative like 1200w?
1500
I might be thinking 12a
hair dryers are allowed cause it's something that isn't constantly ran
point though, not many 110v things get close to the 2400 of a 20 amp breaker
thats why on one 20 amp breaker in my house i have like a min of 5 outlets
5 seperate outlets
hell my comp room i'm in with a server and all kinds of shit is off 1 20 amp breaker
we're talking multi computers, all my networking shit a tv desk lamp and cieling fan lmao
would be a waste to plug a single thing into a 20 amp outlet
unless you go back to your air con
A larger air con was something that crossed my mind
I need to fix insulation before I worry about that though
Why is your friend in a fishtank?
It's an outdoor area that someone built a frame over and covered with clear weatherproof plastic for the roof, it's basically a big greenhouse. I want to put something reflective on the top to keep the room from heating up. As it is I'd need like an 8 ton A/C to overcome the heat coming into the room during the summer. Stupid room gets to like 130F.
If it seems reasonable after fixing the insulation I might get a bigger A/C.
It's kind of jank. The previous homeowner here was, uh, creative.
money be better off going towards improving the room lol
I doubt I could do anything to the room other than tear it down and return it to being an outdoor patio
One half is connected to the exterior wall of my house, the other half is connected to the exterior wall of my neighbor's
replace that roof for sure.. I see those older fiberglass roof things they use to use for decks crumble under uv exposure.. can't imagine plastic being any tougher lol
And the back part uses a fence for support
I've been considering building a carport out front to park my cars in and using my garage as a workshop instead and ripping that roof down
Too much hail here to leave my car outside all year
Plus my garage is insulated and heated
was that space used for plants?
cause I seen makeshift greenhouse all fucky like how you make it sound
That's my best guess
The only thing it's missing is any water hookups
I ran my own out there
It's a concrete slab with astroturf on it with a roof ran between two houses
with a subpanel and outlet only covered by plastic?
I wouldn't even bother trying to cool or heat such a space
that just sounds like wasted energy
outlets have in use covers, the subpanel is in a more finished 'shed' area that was made by laying a shingled roof over the walkway between my house and my neighbors to get to my back yard
Whoever owned this house before me was creative.
older homes generally are.. maybe not quite to that extent but I've seen some shit
I was considering gfci breakers for the subpanel though, but wtf why are they so expensive
it was how people did things
I wouldn't bother with gfci breakers
you can daisy chain multiple outlets off a single gfci outlet which will give to protection to all for a whole lot cheaper
Not when a gfci outlet is only $20 to a gfci breaker's $100 I won't consider them
but outside.. you may even need one of those arc ones
gfci outlets aren't be all end all for outdoor stuff.. seen them melt under high humidity
gfci's required for outdoor/wet area outlets though
And the leaky-ass roof over an outdoor patio is both, heh
technically the area is grandfathered so codes don't really hurt you in that sense as like one day you may sell the house
I wouldn't invest heavily untill after you better secured the area
My plan was to treat the outlets as outdoor outlets. The power tools all have a covering over them so they're not getting wet.
just sell the house "as is" and presto.. let it be someone else's problem lol
Eh, needing to replace a few outlets with gfci isn't worth selling a house over
just saying you don't "have" to put gfci outlets in
the structure itself is likely not even code by today standards
which prob means when you bought the house you bought it "as is" and that same thing carrys over when/if you sell it
Oh, I want the GFCI for safety.
There's like 200 gallons of water in the room, the roof leaks, it's got astroturf that holds water
you cannot duel break a gfci and the gfi breakers are stupid expensive
But I think code also applies to them and I'd rather do stuff right if I can.
you are going to end up spending more than worth
that structure is your biggest issue and untill that is resolved.. why go down the rabbit hole? your almost better running an extension cord off a gfci outlet to power shit out there than to mess with those exsiting outlets
I'm not even sure what I can do with the roof, tbh.
It's rigid plastic, and they're 2x6's
and some 4x4's
Yea, rip it down was what I was probably going to do
then sheet it and do it right.. or at the very least get some of that metal roofing stuff they use on barns
if you plan to live there for years stay away from plastic and fiberglass

It has stood up to some decent hail
looks like that corrugated shit they use for those yard signs lol
i've not seen that stuff before unless it is the same stuff for yard signs
are there tree limbs above it?
Yea
Did have one branch stab through it but it was massive, probably would have stabbed through my roof if it hit there
yea see i wouldn't trust that
is the outlet in question atleast better placed like under the houses eve or something? or directly exposed under that plastic stuff?
well it sounds like you are back to a single 20 amp breaker and single 20 amp gfci outlet lol
atleast that outlet is better protected
A dubiously outdoor outlet I'd absolutely be running on an RCD/GFCI
gfci is only code cause it protects the person.. those things do not keep your house burning down. shocked the arc one's aren't also required for outdoor
least the arc ones give better protection against fires
It's all just layers of protection, some homes here in UK even have surge protection devices at the breaker panel these days
You can get whole home surge protectors here too
They just snap into your service panel where two breakers would go
I dont have one myself, or an arc fault detector
But all of my breakers (there arent many, british ring mains plus small home) are RCBO's as we call them
Dunno what you'd call it in the US, but a GFCI and a traditional overcurrent breaker in one
I don't understand why gfci outlets wouldn't work with a 12/3 wire and a shared neutral between them
Surely I could do two gfcis at least
we don't have an over current
not that i am aware of
anything aside from just the breaker tolerances
over current breakers are normal breakers
^
Thats what a breaker does
If it was just a plain switch it'd be an isolator switch not a breaker
I mean, a gfci outlet here won't trip on over current
We dont. We'd call a traditional breaker an MCB. A GFCI an RCD. Both do different things. And a combined unit that does both in one we call an RCBO
arc might
arc breakers dont trip on overcurrent
no?
no
I thought maybe they would
Nah, they just detect the electrical noise an arc causes and trip on that
arc outlets and breakers didn't even exists outside of commercial application when i rehabbed this house like 17 years ago
least they weren't available at any big box store that I remember
arc protection is yeah, relatively new
And not really required by code in domestic settings in many places yet
I've only seen arc fault breakers online
they make combo oputlets now that have both arc and gfci
You can get gfci breakers at home depot and lowes now though
those things are pricey lol
GFCI breakers themselves are pricey
arc fault detection involves digital electronics
talking about just the outlet tho
ground fault detection doesnt, nor does overcurrent
breakers are always pricey outside the norm
I can't even get gfci for this subpanel I have, it only takes thin breakers and apparently you can't get thin gfci breakers
Yea, it's a tiny little panel that takes 4 slim ones and that's it
and in many countries, the standards that protection devices are certified against require overcurrent and leakage to be pure analog. So arc fault doing overcurrent protection digitally could be a thing but would only be accepted as a secondary layer of protection and would still require you to have an actual overcurrent device
interesting
who knows what the future holds.. maybe one day breakers/outlets can detect IQ and trip for saftey
Hmm, I bet it actually takes two full size ones and they just jumped the 240v slim one across the gap in the middle
my hager combo devices are slim fit
but I dont know if our breakers are a different form factor to US
i never seena slim only panel not to say they don't exsist but yea.. it's probably a 2 breaker subpanel with 4 slims
you sure they aren't tandem breakers?
taking 2 bus bars in at the base
This is one of ours (overcurrent only)
Tandem is what I meant by 240v breaker, yea
my home only has 3 breakers
But its a small home, and we tend to have a lower breaker count than the US anyway where we slap sockets on rings
what does sockets on rings mean?
oh nm
I know
tinkerer explained it to me one time
you guys do weird wiring lol
ring circuits are wtf
yea
Tbf, we think the same about split phase
Some modern british homes arent ring anymore
lack of breakers would suck for me
So do have higher breaker count and just run things the US style, "spurs" out to the sockets
Yea but it's why they have fuses in their plugs, which seems nice
oh yeah every plug has a fuse in it
yes and no.. exactly how reliable are those?
Probably more reliable than a breaker
The only UK plugs I've came across had glass tube fuses in them
do you have to replace the whole outlet upon blown fuse?
and with a lower trip current rated to the device rather than rated to the wiring of the home as a breaker is
no, the fuse is in the plug and replaceable
Yea, it's just a glass fuse in a holder
pretty sure this day and age most americans don't even know those plugs even have fuses lol
thats kind of handy bust replacing fuses would suck
rather just reset a breaker lol
you gotta keep fuses in the battery drawer lol
We still have a breaker, but the breaker is rated to protect the home wiring
Even in the US you can have issues with device cords failing before the breaker trips
usually that is user error tho
The fuse protects the device cord, its likely to trip before the breaker
Do your power strips at least have resettable breakers?
No
we don't care if idiots electrocute themselves here as long as the devices are not at fault
They still have a 13A fuse, the limit of a british socket
Our power strips here generally have a built-in resettable breaker that can be returned to operation with the push of a button
We also tend to stick a switch on every socket individually - dubious advantage that and some older ones dont have it
my strip for my workbench has it but I have others that don't
Some have those stupid ones built into the power switch, those seem to fail a lot
and we can get fused sockets, but they are not the norm
I don't care for the size of your sockets and switches
Switched sockets sounds annoying
I do like the plastic sheath around the pins you guys have now though
Wish we had that
tbf though, if you think the switch is annoying
just leave the switch on
it isnt interlocked
whats the point of the switch?
its just a rocker so you can turn that outlet off, why? big shrug
do you guys use it like a reg flip switch?
I dont use it
I'm just imagining my dog figuring out how to turn the lights on and off
I could maybe see using the switch on like kitchen counter outlets but certianly not anything lower down
the funny one is when some chinesium stuff sheaths the earth too
which they shouldnt
lol
I've got a few power cables where the ground is the same length as hot/neutral, that's supposed to be a no here.
A non earthed device is allowed to have a plastic earth pin on its plug, thats fine. But some chinese earthed stuff imported here has a partial sleeve on the earth pin, which due to how the earth is constructed in the socket means it wont actually connect the earth
the earth contact is closer to the face of the socket so ends up resting on the sleeve, just to guarantee that the moment the earth pin enters the socket it makes contact
Here the earth pin on the plug is supposed to be longer so it makes contact first
