I've got 2.5gb from comcast but it sucks so I have the verizon 5g modem as a backup

#

Been a number of times I've had to switch over because the comcast connection keeps dropping and I need to get stuff done instead of messing with a shit connection.

tidal bronze
#

Always lol

prisma briar

But the Verizon 5G modem gets like 200ms latency so it's not great

VZW sucks

Going to pay less for hopefully better service

I’ve found a way to get a RTSP camera feed to display in a picture-in-picture popup on my TV, without interrupting any other viewing that might be going on. Some homebrew to rebind the buttons and some scripts on it to call home assistant and it can do anything I want. It also has alexa and google home and a microphone on it but I don't use any of that

#

And I have an app on my TV to send the on-screen cursor position to my PC to control my mouse from the remote's gyro and set up a t9 system to run the keyboard from the remote's number pad

#

I wonder if anyone has hacked one of those to connect directly to a PC

I quit using my Harmony remotes for this thing

#

I captured the codes for all my devices and set up esp32's with esphome to send IR commands to everything

#

Everything I couldn't otherwise automate at least

#

I also have home assistant watch my TV and a script on my PC set to query HA every few seconds and go to sleep when my TV shuts off. My TV sends like 50 WoL packets to my PC when the TV turns on.

prisma briar
#

I use Chromecasts with Google TV on my Samsung TVs

#

They're alright

forest edge

sure, the os for those are fine tuned but for tv's it's not like google makes the tv so there is no fine tuning from the same people who make the operating system

prisma briar
#

Even then they're not exactly fast

#

And also full of ads

#

They're just better than what Samsung has

forest edge
#

if it weren't for the fact that the tv having the os built in which places the overlay over every input which is soooo nice i would have gone with like a shield and a dumb tv

tidal bronze
#

Shield FTW

prisma briar
#

Can you even find dumb tvs anymore?

forest edge
#

not in my current situation

dire spear
#

i have a stupid hisense i wish was dumb

forest edge
#

yes they still make dumb tv's.. not the best brands but they are out there

dire spear
#

its been crashing and its like 5 mins of ads before you get to anything

forest edge
#

5 mins of ads.. wtf

prisma briar
#

I disconnect my Samsung TVs from the internet and set them to turn on to an input and treat them as dumb but I know all that crap is still there in the background

dire spear
#

yeah

#

but mine still has issues. it crashes on boot

forest edge
#

google tv's you can actually pick during setup to be a dumb tv and it dosen't load up any of that shit

prisma briar
#

Heh, one of my samsung tvs had a bunch of ads on it and the way to block that was to find the service that ran the ads and put a parental lock on it

dire spear
#

they mailed me firmware (mailed!)

forest edge
#

you get a generic input selector and thats it

dire spear
#

and it worked. then locked up again later

#

HDMI-1 + eARC = Done for a bedroom

I have sheild going in to AVR in Tv Room and Master. Guest bedrroms eARC to soundbar and all Samsung. Works like a charm

dire spear
#

we had LG 78" oleds at work and they were a nightmare. colour settings would keep resetting.

forest edge
#

dire spear
#

hdr never worked right

tidal bronze
#

yes

forest edge
#

god knows you don't play console gaming or have a cable box or anything

prisma briar
#

I have a 65" C1, never had any issues with it. I bought a colorimeter when I got it and color calibrated it and it's looked great and kept settings since. I reran calibration after 4000 hours of power-on time and it had barely changed.

tidal bronze
#

I wish TV's can copy settings like when you are switching phones. Upgraded my master bedroom TV and doing colormatch etc is just a pain.

dire spear
#

i think the tv itself is fine, but the software was buggy when new.

prisma briar
#

Some of the older LG oleds were a lot less reliable

dire spear
#

we use them for screening shows, so we need a good consistent look

forest edge
#

having to do color adjustments on tv speaks for itself

#

my older samsung was perfect out of the box and still perfect now

dire spear
#

(accuracy is more complex, and we basically have up ages ago)

prisma briar
#

every panel from every manufacturer has variance and would need calibrated to get near reference

forest edge
#

all of that should be done prior to being sold

dire spear
#

yeah. we just dont bother. as long as everyone reviews on the 2 oleds, we know everyone sees the same thing

forest edge
#

and if you got a lemon you replace it

Just news, there’s somethings at the chip levels to move stuff forward I think, some Facebook stuff on Instagram needs things like hooks or asynchronous improvements, I wrote something maybe it ends up as interrupts on the chip and basically that knowledge is somewhere else, a typical web developer won’t know how to do that or access resources to vote on when that stuff is ready

#

There’s stuff like security and things like that I have no idea about, but it seems like there are a few new design things ready or demoing on chip levels

#

on Instagram, I have to unlike something and refresh the page and like it again to go to the database

#

What does this have to do with home automation? Basically I want to connect everything to a database and while they can call apis, I think things like fibers or other concepts have to have a lot of code that people don’t like because there’s not a robust interrupt system for databases conceptually

#

I was reading about the crypto threads on the new raspberry pi, which makes me think they are handling the storage of password or other secure details that can’t be scraped from the ram easily

#

just now in 2024 it came out, there were pos systems for like 10 or 20 years with this issue

#

so maybe it’s just about expectations and celebrating when there is major progress like this

#

It’s like there was one line of text mentioning this, but mark Zuckerberg has to go testify in front of the senate about hurting kids or something like that lol

#

maybe for data collection it could be at the same scale as there’s a bunch of heart beat metrics missing, it’s not the same as getting 100909000000 track2s stolen, but maybe major reporting events could get missed and when stuff is missing people get paranoid like “am I getting hacked” is there someone preventing me from storing this important data etc

They're crafty, I had a friend find out they had come in across the power lines to break into his attic crawl space

dire spear

i have them here, but they arent an issue. there used to be rats cause of a hole under one of the rooms, but i filld the whole crawl space with gravel so now the rats have moved to someone else house. there was a family of skunks living under a neighbours porch for a while.

tidal bronze
#

That and IR distribution as well

prisma briar
#

I was considering getting an HDMI switching matrix and running HDMI cables from my entertainment center to all of the bedrooms/my office under the house

#

Would probably cost me like $400 and would let me switch all my devices to any TV

#

There's no reasonable full speed 48Gbps systems that can distribute though (that one is ony 18gbps so it'll cap out at 4k60)

#

And installing an HDMI distribution system that I know is going to be insufficient from day one is not really something I'm interested in.

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

I was still just thinking about it

tidal bronze
#

Oh ok.

prisma briar
#

Planning on holding out until I can get an HDMI 2.1 system

tidal bronze
#

My use case is not distribution, just don't want any components in the house. So all home runs to media rack in the garage.

prisma briar
#

Ooh, there's decently priced long hdmi 2.1 cables available now

static schooner
#

must suck to have to go all the way to the garage just to pop in a VHS tape

tidal bronze
#

Lmao.

#

Shield BT control was a no go so all Shield pros got USB IR receivers.

prisma briar
#

I mostly just want to be able to bring my video games or PC to any room

#

It'd be nice to not need a local device for playback in every room

prisma briar
#

Or be able to send my PC to all the TVs if I'm walking around the house or something

#

Ooh, if I got an hdmi matrix I could use it as my sound distribution system too...

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

Yea, I'm seeing that

#

I haven't looked in about 18 months

ocean oar
#

Those are remarkably cheap compared to some of the stuff I've seen, too

dire spear
#

should i put fibre in my tiny house for the tv run then?

ocean oar
#

Is there enough depth to the walls to have conduit running everywhere?

#

Because if so, then that

prisma briar
#

You're renting it out, right? That sounds like something else to maintain.

dire spear
#

ahh, maybe then just rely on conduit for changing in future.

dire spear
#

some buyers will rent them other uses them for themselves

prisma briar
#

Maybe just have a sectioned off space near the TV to put stuff?

#

For the size your house is you could probably get away with normal HDMI cables too

#

As long as you can make it a somewhat direct run

dire spear
#

would have to go up into the ceiling, across the house to the other side. id say 30-35 ft run

#

it would have to be installed after the house is assembled OR have a connection junction at the house joints (you can see them labelled in the drawing, the house is moved in 3 sections)

prisma briar
#

I'd try to make it changeable or it's going to end up like a dead phone jack or useless coax jack that only does cable tv

dire spear
#

yeah

prisma briar
#

But I also don't really know what complexity that adds to this, I have a crawlspace that makes running wires pretty easy.

dire spear
#

conduit is pretty viable

ocean oar
#

See what I was envisaging is this sort of arrangement, but probably plastic conduit:

#

With a bunch of things you might need to connect arriving in one location

dire spear
#

hm

ocean oar
#

But having to split the entire building for transit, that complicates things

dire spear
#

yeah

#

theres quite a few issues with connecting the modules on site. the point of modules is to make it easy, but if you still need a whole big crew, and a crane, etc you dont save as much as id hope

#

shipping in 1 pc is possible, but would add like $10000. cause you need to drive like 2000km with 2 escort cars

ocean oar
#

Yeah I'm more than familiar with that "fun". It's a surprisingly common thing here in NZ to cut a house in half, plonk it on a truck, and drive it long distance.

dire spear

I don't think you have ever seen me complain about anything I consider production. That's why you gotta test and test.

forest edge
#

what happened to good ole days of just having patience and letting the fauct flow till the water heats up

tidal bronze
#

That's the good ole days. If I can run all the lights without any interaction for years I can do anything else. lol

ocean oar

There's been something of a crisis of water leaks in our city, perhaps the council fixed a leak in our neighbourhood

#

But came home from work one day and it was "fixed"

tidal bronze
#

I am yet to figure out how these LD2450 zones will work with guests. I guess I will find out soon. lol

dire spear
#

i had a house once with super low water pressure i hated it so much haha

ocean oar
#

I've lived in a few. I swear too in this country they used to install showers to suit people around 1.5m tall.
So many places I've lived the shower is pointing at your chest and you had to bend down to get your head wet.

dire spear
#

ha

ocean oar
#

Fixed water pressure + replaced our shower head with a combo rainfall one. So much better

dire spear
#

i have a rain fall one. i like it

ocean oar
#

NZ

dire spear
#

but i only have a temp water heater during renovations right now. runs out in 5 mins

tidal bronze
#

Hot water runs out????

forest edge
# ocean oar NZ

here they had start putting on these flow pressure valve things so that pressure from the main cannot exceed a certian psi regardless

dire spear
#

yes. 6 gallon tank

tidal bronze
#

Wowza

dire spear
#

the old system was a direct tank on the gas boiler. but that all got removed

#

eventually there will be a new 40 gal tank

tidal bronze
ocean oar
#

We also replaced the tiny 850x850mm early 90s original shower with a much larger 1200x900mm one. Aside from upgrading from frosted polycarbonate walls to clear glass (nice to get good lighting in the shower), the extra space is very pleasant

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

Not the house regulator. I mean any faucet or shower

dire spear
#

my shower is 1.1m x 780mm or so. i forget exactly

#

small house, small stuff haha

tidal bronze
#

Too funny Amazon has 2 options, California shower and rest of the country shower

dire spear
#

new shower heads here i think have to be 1.8 gal/m or elss

forest edge
#

half is typical here but when I rehabbed this house i put 3/4 all throughout lol

tidal bronze
#

I don't have pressure issues at all. Just the built-in reg of anything you buy now.

dire spear
#

california is 1.8. so same as here.

#

honestly i dont have an issue with it

#

but i guess im just used to it

tidal bronze
#

I do have separate pump and tankless just for master waterfall etc. Took out all the regulators before install.

forest edge
dire spear
#

just instal a pressure washer 😛

forest edge
#

dare I ask what you mean by waterfall? assuming your refering to something in your master bathroom

tidal bronze
#

lol

#

This freaking, rain/waterfall shower gizmo. I have no idea. Wife wanted it.

dire spear
#

ha'

#

i saw a kohler one that was like 2 ft square.

tidal bronze
#

Yep exactly that.

#

So got her a dedicated tankless separate from the main house so she can got to town.

dire spear
#

haha

#

tankless doesnt work here sadly. otherwised id get one

#

our water is way too cold

forest edge
#

funny thing is i doubt it was the local goverment that took steps to reduce your all consumption of natural resources but the federal government stepping in and saying.. No.. you spoiled brats only get 1 piece of candy at a time

tidal bronze
#

lol

dire spear
#

you need 120A heater just to get a warm shower

ocean oar
#

Two tankless heaters in series? 😆 One heats from freezing to lukewarm, second one from lukewarm to hot

#

I mean parallel probably works too. Half the flow through each

dire spear
#

still the same problem. if you only have a 100-150A service, you cant use is. and thats 99% of homes

#

except very new ones

ocean oar
#

Oh electric. Yeah, that could be a problem.

dire spear
#

yeah. no gas on this house

#

gas is slowly going away for homes. 10 more years and probably no new houses will be allowed gas

#

we'll see

forest edge
#

my grandfather had a solar water heater system put in like the 70's or 80's and it was it's own seperate water tank that the primary water tank would cycle through to passively heat up the water and keep it heat up during the day instead of using the burner

ocean oar
#

Same deal with gas here. They're steadily increasing the daily fixed costs, and connection/maintenance costs to make it unattractive. Our neighbours found this out the hard way just recently when their gas main started leaking.
Quoted $8k to replace the gas line. They decided to go with a heat pump hot water cylinder for about $11k instead.

dire spear
#

yeah

#

heat pumps are great.

#

i had one in my condo for 16 years. finally the compressor died

#

thats not a mini split one though

#

all in one unit in the wall.

ocean oar
#

The people who owned our house before us bought an off-brand grey market import on clearance.
It pissed out all its refrigerant and died at about 6.5 years old.

dire spear
dire spear
#

they are cheap, but i dont expect them to last as long as a fujitsu etc

ocean oar
#

At which point I - not so much discovered as I already knew the score from talking to the comercial HVAC guys at work - also in the "environmental" category that R410a is being priced up the wazoo to deprecate it.
Quoted $500 + tax per kg of refrigerant (unit took 1.4kg). Plus parts, if you could even get them.

dire spear
#

but, 2500 vs 15000... take your pick
