Those patents have finally expired tho

#

hey RobC - did I hear you say once you lived in carmel valley ? I lived there for year (torrey hills before that) how's the flooding ?

static schooner
#

yep. nothing in my yard, but haven't left the house yet

#

I did notice that I need to snake out all my landscape drains

obsidian wyvern
#

i imagine it keeps the actual snakes in check too ? 🙂

static schooner
#

I'm kinda mid-way to the top of a hill, so I don't ever expect any large-scale flooding around me

gleaming crater
#

Yeah my city has rebates for cistern systems to help combat flooding, but I’m on a tall hill that gets excluded from those rebates lol

#

Im like where do you think all my rainwater is going?!?!?

static schooner
#

I have a few rain barrels that are tied into my gutters, but at least one filled, and the overflow to the drain appears to be blocked 😭

gleaming crater
#

So you get to uncork it and replace the drain? That won’t be gross at all

#

Or is it an integral drain on a plastic barrel

static schooner
#

there's an outlet toward the top that I routed to the landscape drain below. I don't need to empty it or dig too far into it if the blockage is right there.

gleaming crater
#

I need like 3 or 4 rain barrels

static schooner
#

I don't have any automatic distribution, so actually using that water is a manual pain in the ass

#

easier just to use the irrigation system

gleaming crater
#

I thought the point was to have slow drip lines

static schooner
#

makes me feel better to capture the water, but I'm not taking advantage ofit

gleaming crater
#

Yeah I would run drip lines from each barrel along the flowerbeds and stuff

static schooner
#

that's the part I haven't done. And there's the issue of crossing concrete walkways

gleaming crater
#

Just use the pressure washer to blast a channel under the sidewalk lol

static schooner
#

I'm pretty sure that a drip system would get blocked quickly by debris

gleaming crater
#

I think you have to filter on the way into the barrel

static schooner
#

then the filter gets clogged

#

And need additional maintenance. I just haven't spent any time on it

#

the previous owners of my house installed the rain barrels, but not any additional infrastructure to use the water beyond a small hose on each

#

which is often blocked by debris. There's already a grating to keep leaves and such out, but not the dirt and dust that accumulates for most of the year when there's no rain

#

I did drain and thoroughly clean one of them several years ago, but it was a pain in the ass and a big mess and clogged again after not too long

prisma briar
#

Hyper-V isn't awful, it's no qemu but it's better than virtualbox.

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

Also the only way you can do vlans in Windows is to create hyper-v bridges on a tagged vlan then join a virtual nic on the host to the bridge

#

Or have proprietary vendor driver support for vlans

clear ferry
#

Every time I see someone run hyperv clusters i think oh god, who forced you to do this, and why didn't you contest it?

prisma briar

I've never ran Hyper-V in an HA scenario

It goes through my reverse proxy, so I can ssh in on port 443.

I did look at that at some point for the logging, but I just ended up being satisfied with it being on a non standard port that was unlikely to be blocked, and I have yet to see it blocked in any firewall

You wanna know my favourite thing about EFI? The boot filesystem and .efi binaries are universal.
Turns out when you're tired and not paying attention, amd64 and arm64 look mighty similar.
And the ARM ISO will boot on an x86_64 system, right up until the point that GRUB tries to load the kernel, and spits out a not-immediately-obvious error message.

late gate
#

okok. I think that I might do something stupid, or maybe not. U guys know I have been team unraid forever, but its just cause its been running well. I think I hit the wall now as my wishes of the OS is just not there for my need anymore. For example docker in unraid is the "app store", yeah great, but limiting for someone know know how to run compose, and if you want to run compose you loose all UI features or docker. Also that is running on a stripped down version of slackware is not fun. I have been looking at trueNAS, but the k8s are turning me off. I spun up a VM with OMV today and it seems to be a better fit with a pretty clean debian with some UI (yes I like to have some UI just cause I am lazy). any thoughts if its worth moving from unraid to OMV?

clear ferry
#

Ix systems botched version of k8s is eeeeh

#

And helm charts are so and so

#

Also kvm is more limiting in truenas

#

And you can't install your own drivers without them getting wiped on every upgrade/reboot

#

Last i looked at omv it used virtualbox as hypervisor, so no thank you

#

If you want unRAID features, just run snapraid + mergerfs, if you want truenas for zfs just run debian

OMV uses KVM

My experience with New Vegas was I preordered it, went to play it day one, every time I tried creating a new game it'd crash.

#

Tried every few weeks for months until it finally let me in then the actual game was really buggy once inside with player models randomly glitching out all the time

#

And I eventually gave up trying and never went back to it

#

One of the people I live with played through it and it just looked dull

#

Honestly it just looked really low effort

#

ill go replay the witcher 3 again...

I've been having some fun with Baulder's Gate, but it's combat system is growing old.

#

I doubt I'm going to finish it

#

Palworld was pretty fun too, but some of the larger bugs it has right now are putting me off of wanting to play more. I'm glad it showed up on Gamepass and I didn't pay for it.

#

For what I'd consider a pre-alpha it's got a ton of promise though

primal laurel
#

not sure why it's so popular

#

from the videos I saw it seemed very cheap

#

before i started to play starfield i wanted to catch up on death stranding

#

didnt seem too boring to me afterwards

primal laurel
#

I also started death stranding but didnt continue

solar zealot
#

the music is nice

but thats pretty much it

#

gmod is a better tech demo than this

primal laurel
#

I recommend all the resident evil remakes, they are very good

solar zealot
#

#

I was confused becasue the star citizen tech demo also has good music lol

reacton is dumping the entire webpage onto my screen any time I click on anything, why

Need some troubleshooting help 😅

#

I've mapped out 90% of a circuit

#

At the end of a daisy chain of receptacles, is another lead heading to who knows where

#

I was curious if it's possibly my wood Bruning fire place???

ocean oar
#

What country are you in?

dawn moth
#

Canada

#

Last picture seems to have white romex

#

But... not sure what that's doing

#

That's inside the fireplace btw

ocean oar
#

Might be worth trying something like this then: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VWCSG7G/
Works like a tracer you use for network cabling, but for live electrical circuits

#

You'd need to turn off the rest of the breakers except the one you're tracing, plug it into any outlet on the line, and use the probe to "listen" for the noise

dawn moth
#

Interesting, definitely an option

#

But I kinda doubt there's another receptacle

#

I've mapped most of the house at this point

ocean oar
#

They work through walls

#

Anything that's attached to the same piece of wire will be identifiable

dawn moth
#

Oh so if it is the fire place I could detect it?

ocean oar
#

That's the notion

dawn moth
#

Hmm

#

Do fireplaces have fans?

ocean oar
#

Can't help you there

dawn moth
#

I thought the point of most wood burning units was doe aesthetic and backup heat if the electricity or gas goes out... I honestly doubt it.. but could be wrong 😅

ocean oar
#

Iunno, they're pretty much the primary heat source in a lot of houses here

blazing musk
#

Depends on the unit, though most of what I see wood burning with fans are wood stoves, not fireplaces. Gas inserts more often have fans in fireplaces.

Ya know, raccoons building the pyramids is the most likely possibility. Again, the four hands
