Which most homes in us have their water heater in heated part of house it seems

ocean oar
#

The only kind of heat pump cylinders I've seen here are basically a minisplit

prisma briar
#

How does a water heater cool the surrounding area?

gleaming crater
#

The heat pump ones

prisma briar
#

Ah

gleaming crater
#

It’s basically an AC sitting on a water tank

#

But pumping heat into water

prisma briar
#

Surely you put the outside part of that outside the house and run a line to it?

prisma briar
#

I don't actually need a new hot water heater yet but mine is 12 years old , and I'm remodeling that room at the moment anyways so I was considering a more compact on demand one

ocean oar
#

Lol, ours is 30

#

Had it inspected, turns out it's still absolutely fine

prisma briar
#

I haven't had any issues with mine or indications of failure but if I could get something that mounted on the wall and stuck out a few inches instead of taking 3 sq ft on the floor I'd take it

ocean oar
#

I wish they'd come up with some new form factors for the cylinders. I have heaps of area under the house where one could be mounted, but instead of a 300l (~80 gal) cylinder, would be good to be able to have two that are the same footprint, but half the height.
As you say, would allow re-claiming the cupboard currently storing the cylinder. Could definitely use that extra storage space.

prisma briar
#

I had my laundry, furnace, and water in the same room. I moved my laundry to my garage and am planning on running shelves all around the room to put food and dishes on

#

If I could get a small enough electric water heater I could totally put it out in my garage

#

I can't do a ton for the heat though, that's annoyingly gotta stay where it is.

#

It'd be cool if I could use a spare head connection on my minisplit compressor for a hot water heater

#

But I don't think that's how it works

blazing musk
#

Our heat pump hot water heater is in the garage. It's an 80 gallon and ran 2/3 of the house before I set it up to serve the whole house, and the 40 gallon resistive heat tank was using just as much power if not more

#

That was my first win after installing the Vue

bitter ocean

I have a very important question that probably doesn't belong in the support channels. I need a snappy saying "home is where [something about home assistant]" along the lines of "home is where the heart is", "home sweet home", the sort of twee thing you'd put on a sampler/gift

blazing musk
#

Dumb option: Home is where the smart is

prisma briar
#

I couldn't really get any more optimal energy-wise than my current hot water heater but it's huge

#

I want the space back more than anything else

#

Probably not that unit but something like it

#

I could just leave that in the room it's in now and reclaim a lot of space/get that ugly-ass water heater out

umbral cliff
#

A few states in Australia are planning to or have already banned gas for new homes. So they have to get electric

prisma briar
#

Gas where I am is like 1/4th the price of electricity, my heat pump barely breaks even with it under optimal conditions

blazing musk
solar zealot
#

it may make sense to figure out which size of tank would actually be needed

#

without knowing anything, 300l seems a bit excessive

blazing musk
#

Yeah our 80gal is probably oversized. But it's basically impossible for us to outrun its capacity

#

And not much bigger than the 50

solar zealot
#

while those tanks are very well isolated, its a bit less efficient

#

the usual ones around here are somewhere between 30-40. they fit nicely under a normal gas boiler so you dont need a ton of space either

prisma briar
gleaming crater
#

I’ve always wanted an “internal” tv station in my house, some way to have a video feed that is synched up with my Snapcast audio system somehow

#

But there is not much in the way of multi-screen video that’s meant to be perfectly in sync

#

Short of all hardwired equipment

prisma briar
#

Displays themselves add too much variance

gleaming crater
#

I’d figure the audio system would need enough buffer to not beat the video

prisma briar
#

You'd either need identical screens configured the same or you'd need something driven by the signal itself like a CRT

gleaming crater
#

And would need to calibrate each display

prisma briar
#

yea, or you'd have to do per screen calibration

gleaming crater
#

In audio I can set a latency per client

prisma briar
#

Our eyes are more sensitive to jitter/latency than our ears

gleaming crater
#

Oh for sure, it takes very little ms to notice a sound delay from video

prisma briar
#

You can get like 10 ms of variance on audio and it still sounds fine but if you get that on video it's a clear screen tear

gleaming crater
#

Eh 10 is insane if the audio zones are close enough

#

Even 1ms will make them sound out of phase

prisma briar
#

True, I was thinking in relation to the video

gleaming crater
#

Ahh yeah

#

10ms the brain will fudge it for you lol

#

Audio sync to video

#

But yeah I want like a sever that can either do YouTube music video broadcasts or milkdrop, and have it be in sync coming out of multiple Pi’s hdmi outputs across the house

prisma briar
#

It'll be a lot easier if you make it so you can't see any two screens at the same time

#

Then you could probably get away with a second of video variance

gleaming crater
#

Yeah the audio on my zones heavily overlaps so I wouldn’t tolerate any variance per zone there

#

I’ve got 10 zones of audio lol

prisma briar
#

I imagine audio syncing is child's play compared to syncing the video of multiple low powered sbcs from an ip video stream

gleaming crater
#

I would imagine the whole system would need several seconds of buffer for client delivery and playback lag

prisma briar
#

Especially over a shared network medium if you're not running wires

gleaming crater
#

I have all hardline Ethernet for these clients already

#

I wanted the audio lag to be < 100ms so I could hire a DJ lol

#

From input to all client delivery

#

He still had to mix in headphones lol

prisma briar
#

You can get hdmi over ethernet adapters, I'd get those then run it to an N port HDMI switch and forego the pis

gleaming crater
#

HDMI delivery always seemed like a total crapshoot

prisma briar
gleaming crater
#

Those devices tend to hit limits pretty hard

prisma briar
#

Claims to support 50m runs, if you're going beyond that you can always throw a repeater in

gleaming crater
#

I still think this can be done as a network system

prisma briar
#

In my limited experience with these they work fine

gleaming crater
#

Video streams are pretty tiny anymore

prisma briar
#

Probably, but it sounds like a pointlessly hard way to go about it

gleaming crater
#

It lets my wiring be multimodal

#

Instead of having to run hdmi only drops

prisma briar
#

Yea, but there's no way it's going to look as good as a straight HDMI run.

#

Or be as set and forget

gleaming crater
#

Eh there’s no way to sync hardwired hdmi tho

#

You still run into per device variance without a way to calibrate

#

I feel like this is something that could be done with just an external calibration app, glue all the video streaming and playback bits together and have an app measure the lag with the camera and mic to configure each player

prisma briar
#

You'd also need a timestamped stream so all the clients could synchronize playback irrespective of network latency

#

I assume something exists for that

gleaming crater
#

If you have a player that will only play “live” and forbids seeking

#

Typically it’ll jump frames if it got behind

#

I think you can make VLC do that anyways

prisma briar
#

IP is going to introduce latency that's going to keep clients out of sync

gleaming crater
#

Go2rtc probably has all the delivery code you would need

#

I’ll have to trawl GitHub to see if anybody is working on this already lol

prisma briar
#

Hmm, if you go with multicast it'd remove a lot of the IP issues.

gleaming crater
#

Multicast is one of those things that always sounded good on paper but turned out to never actually pay off

#

So much of what I’ve seen is unicast anyways

#

And h264/5 is so efficient I’m not sure it matters until you get to a giant client count

prisma briar
#

I was thinking more that a single stream would reduce opportunities for client to client variances

glacial knot
#

partially due to the internet just being baad

static schooner
#

Mbone, baby

Anyone here ever use ddns-updater or a self-hosted DDNS? I pay for a public IP and I’m looking into alternatively paying for a DDNS service that’s cheaper, but if I can selfhost it that’d be the way to go

solar zealot
#

well really all you need is a domain

smoky birch
#

Yeah I have one

solar zealot
#

by any chance on cloudflare ?

smoky birch
#

No and I’d prefer to stay off big conglomerates

#

Looking for more privacy oriented approaches

solar zealot
#

it really doesnt matter, just check for their documentation about configuring the dns records via api

#

it works vastly different between different sites

#

some may offer such solutions already, but add some hefty restrictions

smoky birch
#

yeah my domain is on namecheap and the GitHub project ddns-updater says it’s supported

solar zealot
#

they have limited support for only A records

#

sadly no ipv6 that way

#
#!/bin/bash
ip=$(curl -s http://whatismyip.akamai.com/)
#ipv6=$(curl -s http://ipv6.whatismyip.akamai.com/)
curl -s "https://dynamicdns.park-your-domain.com/update?host=@&<your.domain.tld>&password=<yourapipassword>&ip=$ip"
#

basically with namecheap its just doing this

smoky birch
#

Idk if my ISP even supports IPV6 as it stands, I think when I used their public IP configuration in my router I had to disable it?

solar zealot
#

i cant tell

smoky birch
#

actually I stand corrected

#

Last night I remember it had IPV6 addresses

#

When I goofed up my router

#

And couldn’t access the login page

solar zealot
#

there are several reasons for why simply handing your ipv4 over to them doesnt work properly, but those are usually all related to nat/ shared ipv4 configurations which may vary for your contract

smoky birch
#

Makes sense

#

Do AAAA records support ipv6?

solar zealot
#

yes thats what they are for

#

but namecheap doesnt support doing that with their built in ddns setup

#

you would need to call different endpoints around it to make this works

smoky birch
#

Sounds gross

solar zealot
#

yea its been a requested feature, for quite a while

smoky birch
#

I’ll explore my domain options then because I am coming up on a renewal

#

Appreciate the info!

#

Just pay a lot for a public IP, it’s $10USD/month

solar zealot
#

thats quite hefty

#

you should make sure that not having this ip wont make you fall back to some shared ipv4 kinda plan

#

i mean if ipv6 works thats fine but there are still too many devices and networks out there that do not like that stuff

smoky birch
#

Yeah I’ll check with them

#

@solar zealot where can I track/find the namecheap feature request?

prisma briar
#

If you have a VPS or server running anywhere (other than home) you could delegate a subdomain to that server and use whatever dns server you want for it.

solar zealot
#

so they did not work on that for > half a decade for now

gleaming crater
#

My only regret about switching to cloudflare… was not doing it sooner

#

They have robust APIs for everything, and it’s just so easy to manage domains and dns

solar zealot
#

they dont offer that many default tlds

#

kinda sadly

Yeah I can’t put my .homes domain as the registrar but I can do everything else there

CES challenge: find something without AI

static schooner

there, you'd use bold colors and have it blend in

tidal bronze
#

Such a buzz kill now

prisma briar
#

Stick a transparent screen on top of a mirror and people could cycle through clothing patterns and have it superimposed on them

#

Would need something like the 3DS's camera that could determine your perspective in relation to the screen

#

But that's a solved problem

static schooner
#

looks like they're pitching it as more of a display piece when you're not watching TV

#

like the "picture frame" screen savers

#

so it doesn't just look like a giant black screen

I kinda get that

blazing musk

I mean, you can at least get one that massages your anus with warm water

prisma briar

I have a bidet attachment on my toilet, but it's only cold water

#

Some cheap-ass thing from Amazon, it's started leaking so I'm probably going to take it out.

blazing musk
#

static schooner
#

tidal bronze
#

Toto and done.

prisma briar
#

That's like 15x what I spent on mine, lol

static schooner
#

It's the requirement of a power outlet nearby that always stops me from pursuing one

prisma briar
#

That's why I got the shitty one I got, it just takes water from a splitter added to the toilet line

static schooner
#

it wouldn't be a showstopper in any of my bathrooms, but it's a hassle that I haven't decided is worth it

prisma briar
#

I don't have any convenient power for mine

#

I'd probably have to tap into a light above the vanity

static schooner
#

I'd have to run it through a vanity for two bathrooms and the other 2 I have a wall with power on the other side

prisma briar
#

I was only thinking of the private bathroom hanging off my bedroom since that's the one I use 99% of the time

static schooner
#

interior walls, so it probably really wouldn't be a big deal

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

Honestly even the cold water one I like

#

It's like washing your hands in cold water before the sink has warmed up, not the best but not that bad.

tidal bronze
#

I added faucet water temp display on approach.

#

All over the house. Even with on demand water recirc I would hate to put my hands under cold water

prisma briar
#

Addressing the hot water situation in my bathrooms is on my to-do list

#

It takes 5 or so minutes to get hot if nobody has used it recently

#

Because my hot water heater and my bathroom are about as far as they could be in my house

tidal bronze
#

No recirculation?

prisma briar
#

Nah, this house is too cheap for that

#

Everything fancy here I've added since I moved in

#

Cheap-ass house in an expensive-ass city, yay.

tidal bronze
#

You don't need a return line for recirculation now.

prisma briar
#

What, does it just pump back and forth into a tank on either end of the house?

#

Into/out of

tidal bronze
#

Pretty easy to add

static schooner
#

Around through the hot water tank

tidal bronze
#

PNP now

static schooner
#

I turn it on for the dishwasher and when I go upstairs at night. Otherwise, I just deal with the cold water

prisma briar
#

I wonder if they work with instant water heaters

tidal bronze
#

Mine in BLE. Esphome to BLE. I use stats sensor of human presence sensors to kick it in. Usually it's 83 degrees by the time you reach a faucet

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

I was planning to replace that sometime soon, I might do both at the same time

tidal bronze
#

You can get the heater with recirculation built-in

#

I would definitely go with separate pump and bypass valves.

prisma briar
tidal bronze
#

I heard good things about that. Go for it.

prisma briar
#

Do those make it take a while to get cold water?

tidal bronze
#

You mean at the bypass valve?

prisma briar
#

In a sink drawing from the return side of the hot water loop

tidal bronze
#

When pump runs cold is not super cold.

#

Technically that would be impossible 😀

prisma briar
#

Yea, that's what I was thinking

#

The area I'm in is known for good quality drinking water so I generally just drink cold tap water

#

Hot tap water could be annoying

tidal bronze
#

If your pump is activity driven, I dont think you have much of a problem. Unless you are a hot shower and super cold glass of water kinda guy.

prisma briar
#

I'm fine with room temperature water but hot water is eh

#

for drinking

tidal bronze
#

You will be rocking

prisma briar
#

I think I'm going to get that too

#

I'll keep my current hot water heater for a couple months in case that one sucks

tidal bronze
#

I highly recommend Noritz

prisma briar
#

Different price range, lol

tidal bronze
#

I think so but have so many units installed and rocksolid.

#

One and done kinda unit

prisma briar
#

idk, $700 isn't that crazy for one.

#

Hmm, are tankless heaters noisy? I've never actually been near one now that I think about it

tidal bronze
#

Hmm not new models.

#

Depends on load

static schooner
#

I would think that they're generally located where noise isn't a big deal. Garage, basement, attic

prisma briar
#

I don't have that option

#

My hot water heater is audible from my office

#

It's not loud enough to be a problem but if it was louder it would be

static schooner
#

I can hear my recirc pump when it's running. Just a low hum

#

But mine is in the garage

prisma briar
#

My hot water heater and furnace are in a closet right ouside the opening to my office

#

I took the dining area separated from the kitchen by a bar for my office, the hot water heater is in a closet in the kitchen

static schooner
#

My furnace is louder then my hot water tank or recirculating pump

#

Just from the fan

prisma briar
#

Same, which is why I use my minisplit as often as I can

#

I can avoid using the furnace at all most days of the year

#

Though not this week

#

Supposed to be -22C later in the week, yay

#

ffffff

tidal bronze
#

Wowza

#

As for sound you the slight spin-up sound might bother at start but you get used to it.

#

I sit about 20 ft from it, if I have to use desktop.

prisma briar
#

I'm moving a 3D printer into the room with my hot water heater

#

So that's about the volume I'd like to keep it at

#

Finally getting it out of my office

tidal bronze
#

Oh 3d printer is louder

prisma briar
#

I've basically given up on getting it completely silent in here since I can still hear fish tanks through a layer of sound insulation I put on that wall when everything else is silent.

#

I might put another layer on the other side of the wall too.

#

The complete silence goal is for music enjoyment though, I can handle ambient noise otherwise.

#

blazing musk

You have access to an expander? I've rented a cordless one twice but I may buy a manual one just to have around.

#

Since the cordless ones are like $800

prisma briar
#

I'd only be doing two connections so I'd just get a manual one

Or rent one

#

Not sure if Home Depot rents those

I'd need to read into PEX a bit more first

#

Seems to work ok

static schooner

I like it. It's super-flexible, holds bunch of food, has a convenient "snack" button, ties into the same app as my Litter Robots

#

I also have the Aqara Zigbee one for my other cat. It's more basic, but still does the job

#

The schedule just got out of whack with that one and I had to factory reset it to fix it, so that wasn't great

ocean oar
#

The biggest downside of the Petkit one is their slightly fucked-up app that only allows one device to be logged in.
So if you want to be able to use the phone app and the Home Assistant integration, you have to make a 2nd account and share it, so one is logged into each.

static schooner
#

big enough to fit a fat cat sitting on top of it

ocean oar
#

Curiously, does the Whisker one cope with daylight saving? Because I've noticed the Litter Robot (or at leat the LR3 that we have) doesn't.
Had the overnight sleep mode set for 22:30 - 06:30, when DST hit that became 23:30 - 07:00. Had to hard reboot it, and toggle sleep off/on to fix it.

static schooner
#

I didn't see an issue. I don't use a timer for my Litter Robots

I think the LR4 makes about 10% as much noise as the LR3, so you probably wouldn't need it

you don't need a TV for your hottub

#

typical american lol

static schooner
#

the heat opens the pores and makes it easier for the advertising to soak in

forest edge
#

I've read some people's outside tv's die just from early morning dew

gleaming crater
#

It’s been going for most of last year lol but I didn’t expect much

gleaming crater
forest edge
#

i've had a crt tv outside on my deck for years tho with no issue. just gotta be smart with it

gleaming crater
#

I have the tv in a well covered area so it’ll never get direct moisture, but yeah condensation is where it’s at

#

I should just open it and spray it down with some electronics waterproofing spray

forest edge
#

plenty of ventilation and not running it during super humid days should be fine

gleaming crater
#

I live in Washington state, it’s all humidity all the time here

#

It’s just an outdoor tv is like 10x the price if this lasts even a couple years it’ll be cheaper

tidal bronze
forest edge
#

outdoor tv's are overpriced imo. looked into those when i built my deck

primal laurel
gleaming crater
#

They all seem to start at a grand and go from there

tidal bronze
#

That's cheap used to start at 7k

gleaming crater
#

This tv was 125 after tax and shipping lol

tidal bronze
#

I guess you will find out and update us 😀

#

How are you handling audio from the TV with jets?

gleaming crater
#

My hot tub came with 4x50W speakers

#

You can sit right in front of one and hear fine

tidal bronze
#

Nice.

forest edge
#

wish mine had speakers

gleaming crater
#

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised the speakers were installed when I didn’t order the stereo, I just wired my own amp

#

Must be cheaper than trying to make 2 shells for that line lol

tidal bronze
#

Sound is the hardest thing to handle

gleaming crater
#

I have a zigbee sensor on the lid to start the music automatically when it opens lol

tidal bronze
#

Running 6 tops and 1 sub. Could use more after a few drinks 🤣

gleaming crater
#

I bought a marine sub that turned out to be way too big to fit in the cabinet

#

It sits between the tub and the house tho and vibrates the whole area lol

tidal bronze
#

Mines in-ground, getting low end in the spa is a quest. Running the sub 3' sub surface.

gleaming crater
#

I kinda wanted that monoprice outdoor sub you can bury for the yard

tidal bronze
#

I run something similar all over the backyard.

gleaming crater
#

I just have outdoor speakers in all the eaves for the yard right now

gleaming crater
#

Mmm audio

tidal bronze
#

Outdoor sound is not easy to perfect. I run tops, rocks and subs. In-ground dual VC subs takes the cake.

gleaming crater
#

Hopefully your neighbors still like you haha

tidal bronze
#

Now and then I get compliments on the playlist. Lol

#

I go for good low end with immersive sound so not trying to blast the neighbors out

gleaming crater
#

Doesn’t matter how loud I get, I’ll never be louder than the neighbor practicing his drums

tidal bronze
#

Wowza. I would do a back flip if I hear that.

gleaming crater
#

His practice room is an addon he built himself, I don’t think it’s insulated properly lmao

forest edge
#

sounds like a noise complaint to me

gleaming crater
#

Thankfully it’s like every 9th Sunday, the rest of the time he’s traveling

tidal bronze
#

I have a surgeon that does 140bpm+ EDM like that. I make sure I am travelling when that happens.

gleaming crater
#

The neighbor between us are about to have a baby, I’m sure they’re gonna have a word about his drum solos

tidal bronze
#

Running out of space in HA VM is no fun. I need to start monitoring things. Set it and forget is not working 😕

forest edge
#

less automations that tell you that your obsession with speakers is perfectly ok should save you up quite alot of room

tidal bronze
#

Lol. Few packages were 0 bytes and found out about 0 space when some lights were not turning on. 🤣

gleaming crater
#

That just gave me an idea

#

Have the ability to set notify devices to user accounts

#

And the system could automatically send alerts to admins for system health issues

tidal bronze
#

My issue is that I don't want notifications from HA or want to use the UI 😆

glacial knot
#

automation is great 🙂

glacial knot
#

I still wonder if I shoul setup some voice asisstant over the occasional UI use

#

with the developments this(last) year, it might make sense

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge the number of years seeing and listening to alerts. I don't want to see or hear anything anymore. Automated in the background or don't want it.

gleaming crater
#

I’m the opposite, I don’t want to talk to my system ever

glacial knot
#

I'd rather yell at this, than navigate the UI

forest edge
glacial knot
#

don't let things get wrong™

tidal bronze
#

I used to get leak alerts now not even that.

forest edge
tidal bronze
#

I will get a text from a cleaner saying please turn on water, some water fell on the sensor

#

For a slow leak and sprinkler leak, flume takes care of that.

forest edge
#

you should be more involved with your day to day life not block it out lol

#

you must be easy as hell to steal from

glacial knot
#

it must suck to actually have to worry about that on the daily

prisma briar
#

I also generally toggle all but the device I'm looking at on it

#

Just something I threw together real fast so I could see the immediate impact changes have on power levels

tidal bronze
#

Whole point I'm spending this much time trying automate things is to enjoy the disconnect.

prisma briar
#

I just set up grafana for my ha install a few days ago, I haven't spent much time customizing it yet

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

Most Americans would call people constantly worried of being stolen from without good reason paranoid.

tidal bronze
#

@prisma briar used to be deep into power monitoring, now not so much. There's only a few things you can change in daily activities to make a sensible energy savings.

He's actually going to end up fully paying for my Vue in about three months, lol.

prisma briar
clear ferry
forest edge
#

not seen or heard of that

gleaming crater
#

Crime is very relative to area

tidal bronze
#

I do have a few automations that help to keep grid draw to the minimum like pool pumps heaters etc. Leverage solar production times etc. @prisma briar

forest edge
#

theft is a normal thing anymore and it's not always for things you would expect

prisma briar
#

I don't have solar and my power is a flat fee so I could care less what time of day I do things

glacial knot
prisma briar
#

I had a homeless guy get into my camper shell and steal a basket of laundy once, but it wasn't even locked

#

And honestly I probably would have given it to him if he'd asked

tidal bronze
prisma briar
#

God I'm so glad I don't have to load all my laundry in my car and drive to a laundromat anymore. Living at that place sucked.

clear ferry
#

That's also an interesting thing

#

Is that still widespread in the US ?

forest edge
clear ferry
#

I don't think I've seen it here outside documentaries from the 60s
