Some crazy how, there's one route that goes from ~5 minutes walk from my house to ~5 minutes walk from my office
But it still would mean nearly an hour from door to door, vs slighly under 25 minutes to drive
Yeah, I'm currrently in the process of moving 1100km from my office, I currently live 64km away
Fun stuff, I would probably be MORE frequent and EARLIER in the office after I movec
because if I drop off kids here around 0730 then drive to the office, I usually get stuck in traffic, which means I reach the office at 0930 -> 10:00
but when I move I can take a plane at 0630 and be landing in Oslo at 08:00 and the train takes 30-40m to the office, and it's a 3min walk
I've been tempted to take a bus to work, would be about 30-40mins vs the 15-20 driving
But free parking and no peak hour makes it hard to beat driving
So I've cleaned up a lot of my HA stuff, and moved a lot to the UI now, because I always just ignore it when I don't have time with sick kids around
If I can do it in the UI it is more likely it gets done
What's the "Member" role on this Discord?
Ah it seems like maybe a member of the HA org on GitHub
Core member
Not every org member is member here, as there are also language leaders (from the voice stuff) that are part of the org
but they are not core member
Double decker EV bus?
why
because it still runs most games
ooh
I was thinking about software update
so I was thinking whathappened
some kind of update that bricks GPUs?
but we're talking hardware kind of upgrade
understandable
They probably even be supported for a couple more years to come
I do heavily enjoy the new massive cooler design on the top end card
Makes them so quiet
It’s insane they’d let someone lock your package because someone else depended on it
I am aware of the left pad debacle shutting down the internet, people should be required to locally cache packages to use em or something
I wonder how many vunrabilities everything has
that star dependency is 😂
If you’re using an NPM package the answer is probably “yes”
Every company worth something does
But would companies worth something use left-pad?
Did you read the detail on all that?
Like react was using it deep down
And another couple major libs
It’s that endless chain of dependencies
It's been a while
yea, at times like that I appreciate our fat monorepo that mandates everything we use is under our control
Honeycomb
Hi all. I'm not sure the right place to post this, but some of you may find it useful. I've been wanting a way to write automation in .NET, and I've been wanting to learn Kafka. To that end, I've created this little project that uses Home Assistant's Kafka integration. Enjoy!
https://github.com/leosperry/ha-kafka-net
How to protect ethernet port?
E.g. i have a ethernet connection to my neighbour with a port in a shared utility room accessible to anyone in the complex.
I setup a pppoe connection now but what else is there? Radius?
Sounds like you need client certificates
And a switch that rejects clients without one
radius+802.1-X hardware
Shouldn't need to do pppoe then
or just run wireguard as transport layer on the untrusted link
Yep
I'm an Apple fan, and even I'll admit that this looks like something out of The Andromeda Strain:
it looks more "dystopian" than "futuristic"
I think it's all the white that makes it look like a lab coat & environment
The only "spatial" part is the space between the ears of anyone who is buying this over-priced solution-in-search-of-a-problem
"Do you wanna look like a d-bag in digital ski goggles?"
I do get the possible appeal of having a work space in AR if it was done well enough. I'd be putting windows all over the room lol
The only killer app I can think of would be something that puts name labels on people haha
that would be helpful
that way, I don't need to surreptitiously glance down at someone's badge at work, which invariably is turned backward 🙂
Didn't they wanted to do that with Google glasses
But they couldn't because people cried privacy concerns
I can't imagine someone would wear this in public, it looks so ridiculous
Who are you again? Oh, you're my VP?
You need to learn the magic of double sided print
I don't think they really intend for it to be worn while walking around. The demos that I've seen involve sitting on a couch in a room, or in an office
then why the creepy eyes? I dont get it
I wonder if it's some Apple's equivalent for building promo
Me to EVERY executive at my company and client's
when somebody calls me by my name and I can't remember who they are, that's when there's a problem 🙂
Why would there be a problem?
That happens to me on a DAILY basis at work
I should know?
if you deal with alot of people daily then how can you know them all?
nope
with a team?
yes
If I've met someone enough or for long enough for them to know who I am, I feel like I should know who they are, as it's valuable to build relationships
like I said, maybe a me thing
Do you have some sort of rare/unique feature? If not then yeah I can see why it's a concern
I am a human
lol I’m so terrible with putting names to faces it takes a long time for it to stick
Lol
I have put like 4 or 5 names to a face at my current role and I have been there since like june
the good news though
If EVERYONE is terribe at names
then no one is terrible at names
Not really did you forget how last year started?
we can lose order pretty quickly if anyone powerful makes a mistake
me utterly underestimating the data size around PhotoPrism and waking up to a full VHD. At least it was quick to expand the VHD...

Me at work today
I’m tired and I can’t focus, okay 😂
This episode is gold, my favorite from the 2015 series. The gangs actually hungover here.. but same, holiday hangover tho.😭🤣 And the delirium I have between Christmas and New Years leads me to believe...
Lol, I just realized I've never done a time based automation before now.
They've always had some environmental trigger
Does anyone know if it’s even possible to send an ssh command (without login) from my HomeAssistant pi to another pi? Essentially I have a calibreweb running on another pi but sometimes I take calibre offline to do database work. There is a web portal to shutdown the service but to restart it I need to ssh in and run a command. I want to do something along the lines of “ssh pi@calibreweb ‘<run start script>” I probably have the syntax there a little off. Can HomeAssistant handle something like this?
yes, that can be done
I’d probably have to set up a script on the HA end to send the command with a button press?
It just has to be key-based login to have no password
I had something like:
rsync_backup: ssh -i /config/.ssh/id_rsa -o "StrictHostKeyChecking=no" user@local -p 23 "rsync ... "
Every time I hear a British actor speaking in their native accent when they completely pulled off an American accent in a show (like Sarah Snook), I'm reminded that I can't even say the word 'no' with an Australian accent.
I'm watching an Australian show and that word has a truly perplexing set of sounds when said with an Australian accent
I think it has a 'u' and 'r' in there somewhere
Hugh Laurie is always one of those for me. Watching House, and then going back to Jeeves and Wooster, Blackadder, and the likes
Yep, him too
Freddie Hightower
There are a bunch that make me do a double take when I hear them speak
Narh mate.
Yeah, that's a reasonable approximation
It's so different that it's plausible it's like aluminum+extra syllable
we're codifying our pronunciation into the spelling 🙂
But not always. Because an important part of the Australian & New Zealand accents is grossly mispronouncing most vowels
Australians turn Is into Es (six -> sex) and NZers turn Es into Is (pen -> pin)
Simple
No that first only is NZers (though it sounds more like "sux" to me). We don't do six -> sex. We do absolutely over stress the vowel "a" in every word.
NAArh MAAte.
to sound more piratey, no doubt
Could be similar origins.
figures, since Australia was colonized by the British prison population
And we are all descended from convicts.
GB probably thought that the local predator population would just kill them off eventually
Where are the bubbles from below the image coming from? Did he blow to hard and shart bart?
Maybe he swallowed a piece of soap
You jest but it is a scientifically proven fact that Australian soil is not composed of silica but is in fact just lots of very small venomous spiders.
Introducing today: smellable GIFs
Any one here using Traefik as reverse proxy for HA? My HA container is configured to use host network. Traefik sees this and uses 127.0.0.1 to contact the service, but that ends up being inside Traefiks own container space and not on my actual host.
If I use docker network for the HA container, then it works fine except mDNS doesn't work..
Doesn’t MDNS need docker host mode to ever work?
At least I’ve never gotten it to work without it
Exactly, HA needs to have host network mode enabled, but that confuses traefik a little. Anyway, I just figured that I need to set extra_hosts for the traefik container and now it works 😄
extra_hosts:
- "host.docker.internal:host-gateway"
My co-workers are all losing their mind for the championship game today
Everyone is like "Don't call me after 3pm today"
Dutch national anthem intensifies
The most anticlimatic part of the championship this year was max winning it on a staurday from a sprint race
I think it was already clear many races before that point haha
That midfield was hawt I didn’t care lol
Max is like "suck less"
Sure
But I think there is enough talent to at least challenge him. Constructors need to step up
I read McLaren has a some chance to be a challenger next year, let's see
They made some crazy progress second half last year
The spread from first to worst in single lap times is still some of the closest there has been in the history of the sport
Just nobody has max’s race pace it’s inhuman
I think a few would get close if they had the car to match RB
Charles, Lando, Lewis and Alonso for sure
Can't escape the orange vomit even in the off season
I find it weird that there is no google home app for google tv to where you can see your google home devices and interact with them rather than using voice assistant
I mean, you can use your phone for that
not all of us have it glued to our hands lol
Weird people
The worst kind are the ones that need to get their phone from another room to look something up
Yeah idk lol, I always have it in my pocket or within hand reach
That's very millenial of you
Let me call via landline to inform about the cat images I mailed
I demand a view confirmation
future generations will have implants and think you guys putting those devices to your ear is strange
I know people who spend 7 hours per day on tiktok/yt shorts
phone addiction is real
Surely a fax as well in there
No that would disconnect the phone service momentarily if I remember correctly
Just be part of the decade cycle
Mid 2000s it was cool to have the single Bluetooth earpiece
Mid 2010s were cabled headphones
Mid 2020s seem like the true wireless buds era
That's why you have two phone lines
No one is that rich!
1 bt earbud for talking then vs the double for all now isn't much of a diffrence
I hate bluetooth and mic
Well the one piece headsets were kinda horrible looking
Now people just look like mad talking to themselves
Good thing you tell me news about my company before I know it
Now didn't HPE sell off their switches to Aruba? or was it the other way around lol
@tidal bronze welp samsung is about to release their new music frame speakers. guess you'll be busy replacing all your current shitty hidden speakers with the new tech
Lol that sounded a bit aggressive
Also why hide the speakers when you can make them look intimidating
And all they hear with that is some new rapper with lyrics that are even too bad to be the output of chatgpt
Might want to make your left/right separation wider than your TV 🙂
That's an old pic at an old house but yeah they are now
surely it's all just center channels
that's some monophonic sound ya got there...
Hey just cuz rappers look like a detention desk now
that is uncomfortably accurate
Also those speakers look close but it's deceptively small looking in that picture, they're big ass speakers IRL
And yes they're noticably wider than my tv currently lol
They are loud enough to rattle your fillings loose anyways
I'm very much of the camp that if you don't spend at least as much on speakers as you do the rest of the gear you're just wasting your time/money
Agreed. Good speakers don't go out of date either
Not unless you rip a cone haha
No children allowed in the house, easy 😁
These have metal cones tho, I'd have to make my ears bleed and they'd still not rip
The only place I ever went thru speakers was trunk subwoofers, in washington state if your trunk wasn't perfectly sealed the coil would corrode and short itself out over time
Trunk subwoofers don't have the "buy it for life vibe" I don't think haha
Lol true
It was comical when I had a 1990 nissan sentra that was worth more than double if you counted the sound system
Oh shit there was a boom and my internet just went out
That’s interesting, whatever just went boom tripped my UPS entirely off???
Yikes
Nothing like having your whole cluster surprise power down
Time to buy a new UPS lol what's a better brand than tripplite
I mean even my 3d printer on the same circuit didn't even stop printing during all this
We own Aruba, and 3com, and procurve and parts of h3c
And we rebrand mellanox, brocade, collibris, arista and a few more
So juniper is just one more
I think what threw me is they went and relabeled old HPE switches as Aruba lol
@clear ferry I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
Ahahaha
I can go on and on
Also, I'm the only network consultant in norway, and pretty close to only one in scandinavia at this point
So I need to learn JunOS
JunOS is pretty ez, just a little different
They're mostly bastards who charge thru the nose for software
so just like cisco, they just do it for hardware too
I've worked with mostly any networking gear that matters the last 20 years, and I'm still astonished people who bought cisco ACI have uptime
I'm also flabbergasted that Siemens couldn't manage to copy any switch software to begin with, Scalence X series is a nightmare
Had some "trees touching the HV wire" brownouts here myself
Yeah too much of that here when it’s windy
I thought TrippLite was supposed to be good? I'm just running cheap cyberpower UPS and they're fine
Idk maybe it’s overloaded but doesn’t know it till the power cuts out haha
next will be the neuralink, only a few people will die trying it out and getting a bad software update.
Elon Musk spills coffee on his computer and you're like
god I remember during peak bluedouche era a guy coming into the park bathroom and just continuing his conversation at full volume while he pissed
I remember someone doing that on a conference call with like 200 people in it, they forgot to put it in lecture mode for the first few minutes and it was glorious chaos. One guy pissing and flushing, a woman asking where is the cream cheese, another guy placing an order at dunkin donuts.
i am having a bit of an uncertainty moment migrating the statistics from an old to a new sensor id
it says "check that they carried over" but it only shows them "linked" to the new entity on the energy page
yea nothing about the statistics carry over
you can use the energy dashboard to check if they carried over, or a card that uses statistics
or maybe even the dev tools itself
if i change the new sensor id to be the old sensor id the statistics on the energy dashboard are linked as it seems
but changing the id back to what it should be just unlinks them and they do not show up under the new id
same for the dev tools, i see the old but as soon as i update the id to what it should be it just leaves again
or i am not using the correct way to change it?
are you on an old version of HA?
from step 7 you should be able to change it to whatever you like and statistics will carry over
you're saying that doesn't happen?
i may be looking at the wrong guide aswell
where is this hiding
nvmd found it, its on the gist not the ha docs page
thanks ^^
do i need to rename the entire device or just the sensor
This made me laugh way too much
wait until it fails one day...

hmm just tested it, works fine for me
Reminds me of the customer doing backup of their San to the same San, and still had 3 generations of San in production, i still chuckle when I think about their systems crashing
Is there any kind of 12 step program or automation annonomus I can join. I just wrote the automation for my kitchen light with a pir sensor. It ended up beein 109 lines of code so I think I might have a problem
post the 109 lines plz
Be warned - it's a horrible mess
just drop the txt file here, so you don't spam mobile readers and desktop readers
Pastebin.com is the number one paste tool since 2002. Pastebin is a website where you can store text online for a set period of time.
that looks ok
weird, wonder what i could be doing wrong
It works, but I think I might have overdone it
automation experts are in #automations-archived
This was more a "i think maybe i need HA rehab" post than a I need help with the automation post. I seem to forget the mantra "just because I can do it, dosen't mean i should do it"
found the issue stefan!
i had to manually delete the statistics created by the new sensor
because surely the shelly added points of no usage the moment i plugged it in :)
Hmm, according to my opower integration I used -4700kWh of power today?
That totally sounds correct lol
My friend finally showed me a popsocket that doesn't suck lol https://ohsnap.com/products/snap-4-luxe
Looks like it'd be quite uncomfortable to use
It's all pretty smooth to the touch
Unless you had your hand at exactly 90 degrees to the phone, seems like there'd be thin metal pieces digging into the side of you finger
do people actually use such things?
The fact that you can still charge thru it and it's a kickstand is most of the appeal for me
I know many people who claim they can't own a phone without a popsocket lol
But i don't get the mega phones either so I don't have a problem gripping a phone without one haha
people do it the wrong way
- acquire large hands
- acquire large phone
My current phone is a Sony, they're tall and skinny. No issues holding it
I have the large hands covered lol, I can play a 13th on a piano
Stefan, do you by any chance also know how to migrate entity statistics for the influxdb
I don't think statistics are saved to influxdb. Only the state
Yep
Hello, I assume smthng went wrong during the update. The web portal isnt starting anymore. I'm accessing home assistant via homeassistant.local. Anyone with the same problem? What should I do next? Any suggestions?
This is off topic, you're better off getting support in #installation-archived
Thanks Cal
American dryers be like
Not American enough. Needs to be measured in some kind of bullshit unit like "tons", they seem to love that so much when it comes to heat transfer
I always converted tons to btus in my head
1 ton = 12000 btu
ton is kind of archaic
actual room thermal measurements aren't done in tons
BTUs are also archaic
That's in watts??? The heck???
yea, they get their own 30A 240V breakers here
https://www.homedepot.com/p/GE-7-2-cu-ft-Electric-Dryer-in-White-with-Wrinkle-Care-GTD42EASJWW/206355459
240V 22A (5.3kW)
At GE Appliances, we bring good things to life, by designing and building the world's best appliances. Our goal is to help people improve their lives at home by providing quality appliances that were made for real life. Whether it's enjoying the tradition of making meals from scratch or tackling a mountain of muddy jeans and soccer jerseys, GE A...
That's insane
Enjoying the tradition of using 5000 watts for hours
Literally just to blow it out a vent outside, too
Because it's too humid to pump inside
Whilst here your average dryer will sit fine on a 240v 10a circuit (noting 240v is nominal voltage anyway, and a normal circuit is about 16a)
Granted we only use the dryer for towels to make them soft and fluffy lol
If I hung clothes outside they'd just freeze, I have no room to hang them inside
Nor do I really want all that water/humidity around
It does feel like a waste not having some sort of exchange to pull the heat out of the exhaust air though
We just hang them inside. Perfectly fine
Helps we can open a window during winter and the worst is -6c lol
For when I have to dry things inside overnight I have an automation that switches the heat pump in the lounge from heating to cooling every 30 minutes.
Blow hot air on the clothes to evaporate the water, then switch to cooling to condense it and get rid of it outside.
It's only like -2c here right now but last night it got down to about -19c
Does your heat pump/ aircon have a dry mode instead? Could take the humidity without the cold air
Eh that's only a few minutes.
The dry mode is basically cooling + high fan speed
heat pump dryer would be nice though
Yea, that's probably what mine will look like when done
It's a nice thought to use it, but basically doesn't do anything different
This is my first load since putting the vue on
Dry mode on my minisplit is just full blast A/C
I was hoping it'd cycle between dry and heat but nope
That's annoying
too bad it can't run two coils, heat after cool
car defrost style
I do own a standalone dehumidifier too
If I could individually run cooling/heating circuits that'd be so convenient
I was quite impressed by how much water the minisplit can get rid of though. To the point where I was considering whether I could use a rainfall sensor to measure this:
6 months the dryer is only 1.52kWh a day average. My WFH computer uses more than that because it's running ALL THE TIME during work days (4.61kWh/day)
Those bird noises made me think they were from outside in real life
I wasn't concentating on what I clicked on lol
Actually my Vue convinced me to make it sleep as much as I could
I had moss start growing under mine last summer
Winter killed it though
500w per hour?
Or is all day literally 24hrs?
W/h o.0
it's ~200w at idle but it's running like 10 hours a day on weekdays
and compiling, gaming, etc do run it up
is that including screens? 🤔
My office is at 6.3kWh today but I also had my 3d printer running for like 9 hours
yes, and it's a little inaccurate, the PC is probably closer to 3.5-4, there's a mini fridge on the same circuit
Something in this room is taking like 150w and I can't identify what.
what sort of pattern? I had a mystery resistive heating item (spikes at regular intervals) that I realized was the snake heater
Just constant load of ~150w
Oh, wait, it's the PoE switch for my cameras and APs
nevermind
lol
Snake o_O
haha that's how me figuring the snake heater was
oh he's just a regular old derp corn snake
I forgot that was on this circuit because I ran the power/ethernet cables for that switch through a hole in the wall to a protected box outside that actually houses the switch
this dork
That's a snake alright
250w idle snake
One of the people I live with has some fishtanks in a woefully uninsulated room. Half the reason I got my Vue was so I could see exactly how much he draws so he could pay his fair share for it.
Expensive snake
Can it do tricks?
Actually after I realized it, I noticed the power was mostly during the low thermostat setting
so it's cheaper than running central heat
This is ridiculous (top is his stupid fishtanks)
literally this is cheap
This is literally not cheap
I don't care if he pays for it but as it is I'm subsidizing heating these stupid fish
Energy monitoring is how I discovered our housemate in 2020 had the heating cranked to 26c overnight
Ran constantly, 5.6kwh per day of just extra heating for no reason (since she could turn it down and it would've comfortably stayed at 22-23 anyway)
Then she forgot to turn them off in the morning too sometimes lol
it's a grow op
It's like 200 gallons of fishtanks in an uninsulated room in a high elevation Colorado winter
Because common sense eludes him
Has he thought about getting a cheaper pet
Like a snake
Or a cat
I could probably import a tiger for what he's spent on those fish
has he considered just taping up fiberglass insulation? lol
I have some foil/foam/bubblewrap insulation I wanted to wrap around the sides of the tanks
Well well, I'll be learning JunOS
I also offered to literally buy the insulation for the room out there if what I have on hand already isn't enough
The cat could take care of the fish problem as well
He doesn't even have the tops of the tanks covered
And whenever I bring it up he gets all pissy about it. >.>
evap cooling
Yeah @prisma briar you thought about getting a cat?
'oh whoops it went for a swim in a warm pool with free snacks'
He's going to be really pissy when I double his rent to cover the absurd amount of space and power he's using
Easily using 2x the space we agreed to too
again, cat
Cats can reclaim space
They're also little balls of allergens
well, they will claim it. not for you, but still
sounds like a you problem
He's left the door on that room open a few times, I've secretly hoped he'd do that and a racoon would get in or something
But I'm not going to cause that/allow that to knowingly happen
I won't feel bad if he does it to himself though
D:
like those fish!
don't you live with 3 other humans?
Normal people I get along with
One of the houses I'm currently looking at I could cover the entire house loan by renting two apartments in the house and still make money, and I really want the house, but fuck I hate people
but I've been telling him for like 18 months now his power usage and leaving the A/C set to 62 all the time was absurd and he needed to stop, I'm at the point of telling him he's going to be paying a fair rate for the space/power he uses or he's going to be finding a new place to live.
Yes, one female version of me and two semen demons, so they are kinda stuck
semen demon just sounds like socks that started growing mold 😂
No need to bring HAOS into this
Idiot would literally leave his A/C running at full blast in the middle of winter for days on end because his computer would warm up the room otherwise. Just open a damn window
it's spelled HOA, silly
/rant
I run the heating in the morning, and AC in the afternoon on some days D:
My primary heat pump runs 24/7/365, my bedroom one runs all summer, my upstairs one runs most of winter
He'd run the A/C regardless of the weather outside because his room was insulated and would get hot when he sat there gaming all day
exposure does wonders
By A/C I specifically mean in cooling mode
you're supposed to suffer in a puddle of your own ball sweat
Or open a window and put a fan in, or open his bedroom door and let the hot air out
He'd literally leave the A/C running when it was below freezing out
I should open a window, it is pretty warm today, only -11c
Made the rest of the house impossible to heat evenly
Better than the -32c of Sunday, and -28 of Monday and -21 of Tuesday at least
I'll stick to my Seattle mild + rain
The Frasier reboot was so bad
TBF, the original wasn't great either
I don't kink shame
They should've CGI'd the dog back to life
Did they CGI fraisers face?
No, it takes place modern-day after a gap
I watched less than an episode, everyone in the show needed a good slap
Mem: 326M Active, 6668M Inact, 566M Laundry, 1624M Wired, 860M Buf, 6615M Free
never seen 'Laundry'. is that new?
What
lol that reminds me that I couldn't get over the CGI in The Irishman not because the CGI was bad but that DeNiro walked like an old man no matter what
So, according to my wife, just like me since I was 16
MR ANDERSON
Must be a normal cycle. I run "casual" because so many things we have ask for low heat
I ran an auto-sense load with default settings
I missed earlier - is yours heat pump @clear ferry
ok laundry is a freebsd thingie
It used about 4.3kWh for a load
I need to check the exact model, i don't think this one is heat pump, my old one was
wow mine uses only 1.87/load
It's a bosch
Mine might be a bit higher because the garage it's in is only like 7C
It was nice having my garage heater set to 21c and getting in a warm car in the middle of winter but damn was that going to be expensive as far as power goes
Looks like it used 1.2kwh for a full cycle of extra dry with towels
So I lowered it to just keep the garage from heating which was the original purpose for it
My washroom is only 6c at the moment
we insulated our garage when we added on, even though there's currently no climate control in there
I did an auto sense load with towels and my bath robe in there
but our laundry is in a 3/4 bath
If I had just washed like a single change of clothes it would've probably used like 1/3 the power
What size is the American dryers? This is a big European one, at 9kg
Ours are measured in volume
I had an Asko for a while and it felt tiny. We have a Kenmore now (Asko dryer kept shredding belts) and it's much bigger.
Is that kg of water?
You... Dry belts?
Load
No, the belt that attached the drum to the motor
it did it a third time the day before our kids were delivered and our parents pitched in for a new set
I have never had a belt shred, and my last dryer was around 11 years old when I sold it, my in laws one is probably 30 years old
Looking through the manual for my washer all the max capacity instructions are based on volume, not weight
it probably needed new bearings or something but it was already a compromise - we were in the strange situation where we were trading houses with our landlord (purchased the house they were moving out of) and we took the rental's machines because they wanted their own.
7.4 ft^3 / .2 m^3
9kg apparently equals 122L
7.4 cu ft = 210 liters
in freedom units
Also American, we just wait for stuff, same day delivery, bah humbug
Put it on, do something else
You've never done a load of laundry because you wanted a specific clothing item to wear?
I never wash anything less than a full load though, and I do.. probably 6-8 of them per week
lol until I started doing washer notifications I kept forgetting to rotate the laundry and having to re-wash
Never
y'all wait for your driers? o.0
Weird.
I have enough clothes to not wash for 2 months probably if I wanted
No. Weirdo
Ah, I have like maybe two weeks of clothes.
Never saw the point of keeping tons of clothes
I can wash all my clothes and towels in two loads, my bed sheets take another load.
Outside of underwear I probably haven't thrown out a piece of clothing in over 20 years
I still use thinkgeek shirts I ordered in 2003
I was 12 in 2003
I was 19
So I don't have any shirts from then
I do have at least one button down shirt I've had since highschool
I was probably going to trash it next time I go through my clothes, it's getting pretty tattered and worn.
The thinkgeek shirts have been ridiculously good quality
Can hardly see they are worn
And I wear them at least once a week
I do love the hacktoberfest shirts too
Any shirts I wear get holes after about 7-10 years shrug
Can't say I've ever had that problem, even with the Primark shirts
Shoes however, I go through two pairs per year usually
I try to repair the ones I care about but that only works so much
I'll replace buttons that get torn off of shirts but not much more
Mostly because I can't sew worth shit
Most people I know won't even do that, though, they'd just trash a shirt a button ripped off of
I'm thankful my mom had me take a sewing class at 7
I have a shirt around I need to re-attach the button on
My parents dropped the ball hard on teaching me life skills
but I also need to lose weight again to wear it. So I'm being lazy
:same:
My parents never went over finances, job hunting, cooking, sewing, basic carpentry, or anything. I've just always had an aptitude towards technical stuff so I've been able to figure most of it out to a functional degree.
Public school never touched on any of it either
ugh my google photo content search is doing awful right now
the trick to finances is to not be poor D:
I enjoyed home ec but I was too cocky and thought I knew more than I did :haha:
also job hunting o.0 Is there much to learn about that?
know people
Nobody ever told me things like wear a suit to interviews, lol.
oh yea, that helps.
I got my first real job because my mom (an elementary school teacher) was in a book group with a Boeing VP and her husband was in the C-suite of a company I was interested in.
I only ever do hour long laundry cycles
For the occasional time we do towels
soo, nobody lied to you? 🤔
It was tech support, but at least at a recognizable company
I was 5 in 2003 lol
Well, more wear appropriate attire and what that was than suits in specific
I've not had to really dress up for any of my interviews. Tech companies dgaf
I need to find some song to link for nepotism 😂
I like wearing nice stuff for interviews
Gets me mentally in the zone
Business casual maybe
if you aren't going for a banker job, appropriate attire is a best guess either way 🤷
Just dress the way you would to a date
Yea, nobody ever went over that shit with me when I was a kid, lol.
I wore a suit for the interview for my current job
And the current job dress code is just wear something (so t shirt and shorts is fine for example lol)
I definitely bombed the first couple interviews I did
when I visited HQ, I saw some people in dinosaur onesies
After I got laid off that job (after 7 years lol) I did learn the hard way I should interview at my first picks last not first
I'd argue day to day work attire and interview attire are different
That's amazing
I wore a suit to my first job interview. But in reality it's just the safe fallback that's only safe because when it's wrong, people usually know you just wanted to be safe 😂
Especially if day to day work attire is a dinosaur onesie
yea, you should iron the tshirt for the interview^^
honestly though, depends on the industry and partially position in the industry
There were a bunch of people at my first job who didn't wear shoes most of the day. We'd get work emails about using caution in the kitchenette, somebody had broken glass...
That's kind of gross
yea, don't break glass D:
I'm just imagining how dirty my feet would be if I walked around my office all day barefoot
unless others have a habit of dragging in outside dirt with their shoes, not particularly
Especially in a communal kitchen
I did it once because I soaked my shoes riding my bike to work and didn't bring a backup pair
I should check if I'm technically violating any safety requirements when I walk around the lab in socks 🤔
Might be a slip regulation or something
yea. In the desk area it's even slightly too grippy due to the carpet
"new policy after we found toe jam in the samples"
but the lab is tiled or just concrete
well, our lab is industrial robots. So there'd have to be a lot of toe jam on there for it to be obvious
I was a general manager at a fast food joint for a few years when I got out of school, we had to either get our floors coated with an anti-slip coating or mandate anti-slip shoes for everyone.
similar robots, different tasks
Is that a robot in a puddle of blood?
yeah my wife did the same and anti-slip shoes were mandated because you never could get all the grease off the floor
We opted for the floor coating, but it had to be reapplied twice a year
the blood is hydraulic fluid iirc.
And yes, it's an art installation
or was. I assume they tore it down by now
And it made dried soap stick to the floor crazy hard, damn near had to take a power washer to get it off once it dried.
Never had any of that either, moved out at 16 and learned it all as i went along, and I flunked most classes in school except music and language
Started working at 9, worked all years since except one
I started working at 15, didn't move out until I was out of school at 20 though.
We get state funding to study outside our own town
That covered my rent and most of my food
I didn't flunk classes but I did the bare minimum to pass most of them
Work just added on top of that
I was living at home so I had no rent/food bills but I also had no income for things like gas to get to school, other than working
I did spend about a year selling minecraft mods around 2010
o.0 gas for school
LOL
y'all need some busses
We had busses, I still got a car the week I got a licence
My parents lived like 40 miles from the college I went to
Northern Norway is pretty rural for the most part
The bus was just not an option for me, lol. They didn't start running early enough for me to get to class on time
Really
Our busses start at around 5 usually
And go until 3
Ie, 2 hours they don't go
I think my earliest classes were 7:30 AM, a 5 AM bus would have made me late
how fucking slow are your busses? o.0
Interesting, school will never start before 08 here, usually 0830 or later
yeah our public transit is "good" by american standards and I still got stuck 15 miles from home because I missed the last bus at midnight-ish and they didn't start until 5 again
really really slow
They generally don't go over maybe 15 mph in traffic and in the mornings a bus will stop every other block to let people on/off.
And there aren't direct routes
So often you'll need to go to a depot and transfer to another bus at least once on a trip
all the people here bitching about the current transit levies... they could have had a billion dollars in subsidies in 1969 for it but NOOOO it got voted down
There's areas of the city I grew up in I'd have needed a half-dozen different busses to get to from where I lived
Also the closest bus stop to my house was around 2 miles away
40miles here by bus would usually be 1h including around 30-50 stops
If I could stay on one bus, sure, but I'd have to get off at a depot and wait for another bus
They generally ran twice an hour
The busier routes maybe more but I was in the suburbs
If I had that I'd go everywhere by bus
And there are multiple lines covering the same stretches
So in reality, probably 40 departures per hour for some
There might be some slight overlap between routes here but it was generally coincidental and only for a couple blocks, and basically completely random
I currently live in the middle of farmland, and even here the bus does 2-3 per hour, we are talking middle of nowhere though
The one past my parents house does every 10 minutes for the main line, but it has 3 other ones passing by
yeah I wish public transit here was frequent enough I didn't have to think about it
I have done public transport maybe 3 times the last 15 years, all were to pick up new cars
I found this map someone put together of all the 'frequent' (at least one every 15 minutes) bus and lightrail routes in Denver
There's 15, and one of them only drives back and forth between the ends of a strip mall that's past it's prime.
Once you get on that core network it's not bad but getting to it sucks
And another 4 of those 15 are all on the same road
It's a notably long road, but still just that one road
Since the US is so dependant on archeic technology like fax, landlines, desk phones etc
what is the postal service like ?
In my experience extremely reliable and cheap
5 years ago they figured out we don't get enough letters to justify daily delivery, so we moved to every other day, so 2 week 1 and 3 week 2, etc
and even then I only get maybe... 1-2 letters per month
I get delivery 6 days a week and our postal system will do Amazon packages on the seventh
Some deal Amazon made with the postal union
Still daily and reliable but certain interests are trying to gut it to privatize it
Also they're subsidized by junk mail
Yea, lots of spam mail
interesting, I'd figure you rely a lot more on letters for communication when you rely on all the other stuff
I just put a sticker on my mailbox 15 years ago, haven't gotten any advertising since
Not sure why you think faxes/landlines/desk phones are common over here
I work with a lot of US people, in a US company 😄
they all have desk phones, and faxes
and I've seen a lot of people in this channel discuss landlines and calling their dealers to fix stuff
My company moved away from desk phones years ago
none of those in tech but faxes are still things for "private" stuff like medical records
Yeah, I haven't had a desk phone since 2004, most companies haven't since the early 2010s
I think I have a VOIP number but I just use my cell phone so I don't have to keep a stupid voip app on my phone
they are just sent via the internet, dedicated health network
or to be fair, vpn based
yeah our "efficient" market has a number of competing solutions so none of them talk to each other
I did get a good chuckle when I saw the booth of people who "help you" with your taxes at walmart when I was in Atlanta
Our HR still has the ability to send/receive faxes, but it's all done from a workstation through a cloud fax provider and at this point is basically just a fancy way of removing the metadata from PDFs
we'd have automatic taxes if we didn't have Intuit, H&R Block, etc. lobbying to keep them complicated
Those are basically all a scam
If you actually need someone to prepare your taxes for you you don't go to a booth in a walmart, if you're a layman you can do your taxes yourself.
They're not hard
god, have you ever tried to use the free level of TurboTax though? So many traps for trying to push you into paying.
Yea
My state has offered free state-level e file since before I started filing my taxes though
We don't have state income tax because Gates, Bezos, et. al. like it that way and it was established in our constitution before they were a thing
Income taxes were introduced as a way for the government to continue to function after the passage of alcohol prohibition since beforehand the majority of the government's budget was from alcohol taxes
We should just go back to that
heh WA alcohol taxes are no joke
Legalize everything, tax it all
Our government does them for us, and we just have to agree or change what we feel needs changing
yep, and it could be that way here because the IRS already has all the info.
Nobody likes the IRS. But recent budget and staff cuts have made it increasingly difficult for the department to do its very important job. Don’t take our word for it. Ask Michael Bolton.

For most Americans filling out this form is all 'doing their taxes' entails
It's stupid and annoying but not really that much of a thing
Also state but for my state it's just 'fill in the value from this box on the federal form' for everything
Just a waste of time. Like arguing with health insurance over denials.
Pretty much
In my experience health insurance billing has been such a mess they were unable to justify or defend any of their bills
you don't need to. it should be shot into the sun wholesale
I literally got three different bills for three different amounts with the description 'Hospital stay' then the date of the stay
Remember I saw once an invoice for $1200 for one advil and walking into the ER
Insurance was supposed to have covered everything for mine, they waited years to come after me then came after me with that nonsense. I disputed it when it got reported to my credit and won
do you have to pay to have it or is yours included in your job ?
I've seen people pay more per month for it than I've paid in health expenses the last decade
Even employer-provided insurance is still paid, it's just generally a lot cheaper
I pay like $250/mo for insurance or something through my employer
And some employers pay fully; others you pay a share or it's paid for the employee and you pay a share for the dependents
Group insurance policies
I've had 2 employers that pay fully. The rest asked for $1-200/month
I'm capped at $200 a year for all medical expenses, I seldom hit that
Private health insurance costs also are paid before any income tax is taken out
I guess mine is only $180/mo
But I don't pay income tax on the money I earn to pay it
also co-pays. Mine went from $25 last year to $30 now. My "good" employers have had $10 co-pays.
My insurance is fine. If I had to buy my medicine without insurance it'd cost slightly more than I'm paying for insurance every month and insurance has a number of other perks, too.
Mostly because of stupid patents
then insurance coding for the same procedures can change how it's paid. I got dinged my deductible for a colonoscopy because it was billed as a "diagnostic" instead of "screening" and everybody, including the govt agencies that are supposed to handle that bullshit said "not us, talk to <other entity>"
"No Surprises Helpdesk" more like "No Help Helpdesk"
you'd be surprised if you actually receive help 😮
I've done a few of those conoloscopies
I'm not paying to get filled with gas
I do that for free and enjoy it

we all know you are a pervert 😉
On another note, I wonder if I can find a home assistant addon that adds a container with grafana/influxdb to log to
do you mean ero-manga sensei? 😂
yes
I have done that for years
but, it sounded like you wanted grafana \ influx to log to something else
No, I want HA to log to grafana and influx
or you could just run a sane install of HA and run those as containers
That's no fun
haos nonsense kids these days
I need to start making some good graylog dashboards soon
I don't have time to fiddle around so I run mine as add-ons
and get those into HA somehow, or just do tab rotation on my kitchen screen
Is there a grafana addon?
Yes
yay I can be lazy
I don't really call 3 minutes to run docker compose pull && docker compose up -d once every two weeks or so for fiddling
I have mine set up to log to Victoria Metrics
I have a nice friendly 'Install' button
but you have to have someone make the addon first, and then you are locked to whatever version that addon is running, and whatever config variables it has exposed
But yeah, all of my graphs are from Grafana add on
do add-ons still auto update ?
Judging by the pending addon updates I have no
They post update notifications, but you still have to manually acknowledge them
Reminds me, need to setup cloudflare companion again
was nice to deploy a container and have it create dns entries automatically
I don't think I even have docker on my host
I do have a couple LXC containers with docker in them though
yuck lxc
I like it
I'm gonna call @glacial knot and say you said that
I liked lxc back when docker wasn't a thing 😂
these days, docker is just easier
And podman can adopt most of that ease, with most of what lxc offers over docker
we did some fantastic things with lxc and xfs in the before days
wouldn't do it that way anymore these days
Not tried podman yet
Oh that's neat. But that assumes you want a service public
well, I had another one that did it for opnsense too
Wonder if there's a way to autocreate DNS entries into a windows DNS server
probably yes
also yuck windows dns
I primarily used cloudflare companion in my k8s lab, to autodeploy services with ipv6 exposing
with lbmetal
I have windows AD
Windows DNS works well
Plus syncs across networks easily

Nothing like weird-ass primary-primary DNS configurations and back-channel zone transfers
🪟
"I'm down with Bill Gates, I call him 'Money' for short"
I remember I was troubleshooting why a customer had issues deploying software to his computers a few years ago
appears someone had disabled dns timeout in their windows dns
I just do basic DNS stuff there lol
Fuck anything more advanced with windows AD
That's just funny
nice
this just cracks me up

Pretty sad that it isn't Tuya compatible

AI Powered alignment
Aka 2 infrared bulbs checking for bounceback against the strike plate
Wonder if a magnet will force it open
it's only a matter of time before you start hearing about home thefts due to "smart locks" like how you did with all those kia thefts
I would say less chance of that vs the Kia thefts
Kia was just not including a simple thing required, an immobiliser (which is required in certain countries)
locks should not be complex and allow multiple means of opening them
that thing had nfc, keypad, bio lock, used wifi and othe protocols
all it takes it finding a weakness with something that, that company itself didn't even invent just to open it
Which is different to Kia which just didn't have an immobiliser
wait, what? Was that the actual issue? Is that why it hasn't been an issue at all here? 😂
auto thefts still happen, that was just a more of drop the ball situation which got alot of PR
Pretty sure I read that was the issue
And at least in Australia immobilisers were required from 2001 lol
1998 in Germany 😮
That's why a USB could make it start. You bypass the key part, and just turn the ignition dial
Normal countries it's bad that you can do that
But at least you can't start it with a USB
3 years isn't a crazy difference
Jup. About the time it needs to flow through bureaucracy
Plus doesn't mean manufacturers weren't including them before that date either
Apparently a German insurance company pushed hard for it, the moment they saw them on the market
all in all further proof that the more complex you make something the more vulnerable it is
Huh
The Kia issue shows that when you ignore important security features they make it more vulnerable
Nonces just make security more complex. Let's drop them 😮
@clear ferry what do you think? Nonce or not?
you mean vendor specific names for the same shit ?
???
define: nonce
Number used once. The common definition in security
oh, when I hear nonce I think of the definition used once, as in cisco VPC vs IEEE MLAG
it's not just the kia thing. that was just what went all super viral
cars with push button starts also get a lot of thefts
And was a simply fixed issue, it didn't go viral overseas because laws existed
the more complex a vehicle it with eletronics and means of starting it the faster someone can steal it
they were clocking people stealing shit in like seconds.. not minutes
The Kia case is the opposite of what you claim 😂
Push button starts are using advanced repeaters, just don't keep keys close to the car (which is good advice as people are more likely to break in and steal the key anyway)
Older cars are more vulnerable, and car theft has been trending down over time. Especially with things like immobilisers, or being unable to hot wire a car, alarms, etc
granted there has been improvements over the old "hot wire" but we went right over the happy medium and onto the next easy thing imo
The only easy thing you've properly mentioned is the kia incident
Which most countries have moved well past that being an issue
as i said, it's not just the kia thing
all push button vehicles are noted as being easier than other types
which is only because of repeaters existing
You just don't put your keys right by the door, or close to where the car is being kept overnight
Just like you wouldn't put your car keys in the garage next to the car with older cars
if someone has any kind of remote capabilites to start thier vehicle rather via fob or online, breaking the window in some vehicles allows someone to drive the thing away without tripping the auto shut off
this is just scratching the surface of what is leaking of how people are stealing vehicles.. the FBI here done announced there are tons of ways for people to steal vehicles these days where it only takes the person, in public view a few seconds to get in and drive away
If you have an app, then sure you could have people steal your password, more reason to use mfa there
Repeaters are the big one, again just don't have your keys close to where the car is if you're afraid of that
I wish my Volvo could do FOB remote start, apparently that is legal in the US, but not in europe due to security
like your solution to something that shouldn't and wasn't even a problem before lol
Most crimes will go after what cars are easy though, a car from the 90s vs a car from 2023, thief will take the 90s car since its easier
Judging from ATX, seems like its a problem in the US but not europe lol
car thefts are not confined to the US
just diffrent means
Correct
Other countries take efforts to protect people
Like requiring an immobiliser
Which is mandatory in the eu and australia for example
Though i'm sure you will say an immobiliser is useless
quick search pulls up that NZ is the highest vehicle theft country in the world.. pretty close to you lol
Ok? NZ isn't australia though
just ironic cause you tried to make it a US only thing yet it's your neighbor that leads the pack lol
I'm not making it a US only thing
I was mentioning one of the things that stops car thefts, is required in some countries but not others, I only knew aus and USA off the top of my head
Just like remote start, no clue the legality of it in australia, but its obviously legal in the us and not in europe
my overall point still stanbds. the more they make sure like vehicles and home locks more complex, the easier it will be at some point for someone to take advantage of
Or they make it more complex and it helps prevent thefts, like immobilisers
You can't disagree that made car ignition systems more complicated. Yet it also made things more secure
I had said they had made improvements but instead of stopping when it worked they just kept going
Look up the meaning of nonce in the UK.
For me it was a 5 min bike to station, take train, 5 min walk to college
Now I just bike to uni because it's so close
Is ti being raided right now?
Texas instruments?
I'm still wondering what has made you leap to that conclusion
Twitter probably
I got an alert that servers might be melting down somewhere
I mean, I can totally see how that vague statement links to a raid
I live in north Texas and someone bombed Fort Worth yesterday or last week
when people have crypto issues I have alerts that sugar metabolism changes
it’s the coral honeysuckle
It's the what what?
Probably some story from long ago
like someone who’s expecting someone to trade for them and notices there was no trade and they get angry for a while and is like “someone forgot to make my trades of the day”
But it’s really they are using something like maxmsp and machine learning together to trade crypto
Or do 3d rendering in the same way where or some way to easy send too much stuff to a gpu or cpu and it over heats server rooms
4k tv's are kind of tedious.. least android variants of them
every damn resolution has it's own settings you have to adjust

Somebody tried to steal our rarely-used Suburban which doesn't have an immobilizer but does have a hall-effect sensor to determine if the ignition cylinder was actually rotated.
They broke the sensor completely off in their effort 🙃
I live in a town that’s suing Kia for making such steal-able cars lol it’s rampant here
I do find it funny I’m like the only person on my street that actually parks inside their garage
Why park your car in it when you can store more s*** in it?
I love not scraping my windows
(we park in our garage but there's no space for the Suburban)
My wife’s X3 barrrrrely fits lol
I had to hang a tennis ball to help park in the right place
We did the laser
When I moved in there was one opener and 2 doors, the guy installing modern openers was like “that one you have? We call it the childkiller because it predates those safety standards”
I thought about doing something less low tech so it worked in either direction
She has to get out to check her bumper when she backs in
We don't bother backing. The laser is basically just a tennis ball, point it at a reference on your vehicle. It's filtered through a diffuser to make a line
I put a low-tech piece of blue painter's tape on the garage floor where the inside edge of the door lands. As long as I can see it in the backup camera, I'm good
I closed the garage door on my rear bumper before I discovered the magic of the tape 🙂
Wut
Is that く or just crappy <?

Cat? What cat? I don't see any cat...
I see leftover fluff. Spontaneous catbustion
She loves to crawl under there and go to sleep
I picked up our cat this morning and he farted in my face
That's how you know he loves you
exactly
Is that a thing ?
yes
Ohhh
oh that's pretty cursed lmao
Don't you hate it when you accidentally buy a tracksaw?
that's not a bad price. 3456 makes it look like an error
I have been watching for a while, expecting them to cancel the order 🤣
Box box?
Looked at an instant hot water heater, it wants three 40A 240V circuits
Or 80% of my whole home's service, lol
if it's instant, just put a couple super caps right in front
shouldn't pull the power for long
I imagine it pulls that as long as hot water is being drawn
A natural gas one might work for me
but idk how to work with gas D:
ventilate. that's about all there's to know about gas^^
Yea, my existing hot water heater has ventilation, I imagine that'd work for an on demand one too
though, while I haven't looked myself. My parents recently looked at kitchen stuff
And apparently the current cool tech is essentially a reservoir close to the faucet that's very well isolated
so you can draw 10l or so, which is generally good enough
Just be like Brazil and have those shower heads that hook straight to mains power
The beauty of on-demand gas hot water is you can just put them outside. No need for a flue
My house will never get a gas hookup :/
It woulda been like 50k/house to extend it before the city said no new hookups
Mine either, likely. NZ is on the path to phasing out residential gas (by cranking up the daily and per-kWh charges to discourage new installs), in favour of heat pump hot water and induction cooking
Yeah my city has rebates on all that new kinda equipment
I could get $500 off a heat pump water heater here
Cost of installs here can be pretty grim here too. My next door neighbours just discovered their gas main was leaking, were quoted $8k for the replacement gas line, or $12k for heat pump hot water.
With the dramatically lower cost of operation seems like a no-brainer, probably break even on that in 4-5 years.
