I've gotten closer to taking a bus in the past 3 years than at any other point in the past 10

#

Some crazy how, there's one route that goes from ~5 minutes walk from my house to ~5 minutes walk from my office

#

But it still would mean nearly an hour from door to door, vs slighly under 25 minutes to drive

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I'm currrently in the process of moving 1100km from my office, I currently live 64km away
Fun stuff, I would probably be MORE frequent and EARLIER in the office after I movec

#

because if I drop off kids here around 0730 then drive to the office, I usually get stuck in traffic, which means I reach the office at 0930 -> 10:00

#

but when I move I can take a plane at 0630 and be landing in Oslo at 08:00 and the train takes 30-40m to the office, and it's a 3min walk

umbral cliff
#

I've been tempted to take a bus to work, would be about 30-40mins vs the 15-20 driving
But free parking and no peak hour makes it hard to beat driving

clear ferry
#

So I've cleaned up a lot of my HA stuff, and moved a lot to the UI now, because I always just ignore it when I don't have time with sick kids around haharald

#

If I can do it in the UI it is more likely it gets done

How to protect ethernet port?
E.g. i have a ethernet connection to my neighbour with a port in a shared utility room accessible to anyone in the complex.

I setup a pppoe connection now but what else is there? Radius?

Sounds like you need client certificates

Does anyone know if it’s even possible to send an ssh command (without login) from my HomeAssistant pi to another pi? Essentially I have a calibreweb running on another pi but sometimes I take calibre offline to do database work. There is a web portal to shutdown the service but to restart it I need to ssh in and run a command. I want to do something along the lines of “ssh pi@calibreweb ‘<run start script>” I probably have the syntax there a little off. Can HomeAssistant handle something like this?

Every time I hear a British actor speaking in their native accent when they completely pulled off an American accent in a show (like Sarah Snook), I'm reminded that I can't even say the word 'no' with an Australian accent.

I'm watching an Australian show and that word has a truly perplexing set of sounds when said with an Australian accent

But not always. Because an important part of the Australian & New Zealand accents is grossly mispronouncing most vowels

Australians turn Is into Es (six -> sex) and NZers turn Es into Is (pen -> pin)

Any one here using Traefik as reverse proxy for HA? My HA container is configured to use host network. Traefik sees this and uses 127.0.0.1 to contact the service, but that ends up being inside Traefiks own container space and not on my actual host.

If I use docker network for the HA container, then it works fine except mDNS doesn't work..

Doesn’t MDNS need docker host mode to ever work?

At least I’ve never gotten it to work without it

Exactly, HA needs to have host network mode enabled, but that confuses traefik a little. Anyway, I just figured that I need to set extra_hosts for the traefik container and now it works 😄

i am having a bit of an uncertainty moment migrating the statistics from an old to a new sensor id

#

it says "check that they carried over" but it only shows them "linked" to the new entity on the energy page

#

yea nothing about the statistics carry over

primal laurel
#

you can use the energy dashboard to check if they carried over, or a card that uses statistics

#

or maybe even the dev tools itself

solar zealot
#

if i change the new sensor id to be the old sensor id the statistics on the energy dashboard are linked as it seems
but changing the id back to what it should be just unlinks them and they do not show up under the new id

same for the dev tools, i see the old but as soon as i update the id to what it should be it just leaves again

Like a snake
Or a cat

prisma briar
#

I could probably import a tiger for what he's spent on those fish

blazing musk
#

has he considered just taping up fiberglass insulation? lol

prisma briar
#

I have some foil/foam/bubblewrap insulation I wanted to wrap around the sides of the tanks

clear ferry
#

Well well, I'll be learning JunOS

prisma briar
#

I also offered to literally buy the insulation for the room out there if what I have on hand already isn't enough

glacial knot
prisma briar
#

He doesn't even have the tops of the tanks covered

#

And whenever I bring it up he gets all pissy about it. >.>

blazing musk

umbral cliff
prisma briar
#

He's going to be really pissy when I double his rent to cover the absurd amount of space and power he's using

#

Easily using 2x the space we agreed to too

glacial knot
#

again, cat

umbral cliff
#

Cats can reclaim space

prisma briar

They're also little balls of allergens

glacial knot
#

well, they will claim it. not for you, but still

glacial knot
prisma briar
#

He's left the door on that room open a few times, I've secretly hoped he'd do that and a racoon would get in or something

#

But I'm not going to cause that/allow that to knowingly happen

#

I won't feel bad if he does it to himself though

glacial knot
#

D:

glacial knot
#

like those fish!

glacial knot
#

don't you live with 3 other humans?

prisma briar
#

Normal people I get along with

clear ferry
#

One of the houses I'm currently looking at I could cover the entire house loan by renting two apartments in the house and still make money, and I really want the house, but fuck I hate people

prisma briar
#

but I've been telling him for like 18 months now his power usage and leaving the A/C set to 62 all the time was absurd and he needed to stop, I'm at the point of telling him he's going to be paying a fair rate for the space/power he uses or he's going to be finding a new place to live.

clear ferry
glacial knot
#

semen demon just sounds like socks that started growing mold 😂

clear ferry
#

No need to bring HAOS into this

prisma briar
#

Idiot would literally leave his A/C running at full blast in the middle of winter for days on end because his computer would warm up the room otherwise. Just open a damn window

glacial knot
#

it's spelled HOA, silly

prisma briar

clear ferry
glacial knot
#

I run the heating in the morning, and AC in the afternoon on some days D:

clear ferry
#

My primary heat pump runs 24/7/365, my bedroom one runs all summer, my upstairs one runs most of winter

prisma briar
#

He'd run the A/C regardless of the weather outside because his room was insulated and would get hot when he sat there gaming all day

blazing musk
prisma briar
#

By A/C I specifically mean in cooling mode

blazing musk
prisma briar
#

He'd literally leave the A/C running when it was below freezing out

clear ferry
#

I should open a window, it is pretty warm today, only -11c

prisma briar
#

Made the rest of the house impossible to heat evenly

clear ferry
#

Better than the -32c of Sunday, and -28 of Monday and -21 of Tuesday at least

blazing musk
#

I'll stick to my Seattle mild + rain

prisma briar

The Frasier reboot was so bad

I never saw the appeal of Cheers either

The only funny stuff was the dog

prisma briar

At least I presume the dog is

clear ferry

I don't kink shame

prisma briar

They should've CGI'd the dog back to life

clear ferry

Did they CGI fraisers face?

prisma briar

No, it takes place modern-day after a gap

prisma briar
#

I watched less than an episode, everyone in the show needed a good slap

What

blazing musk
#

lol that reminds me that I couldn't get over the CGI in The Irishman not because the CGI was bad but that DeNiro walked like an old man no matter what

clear ferry
#

So, according to my wife, just like me since I was 16

prisma briar
#

Full cycle for my dryer

clear ferry
#

Holy fuck

#

Your dryer uses 10x the power of mine

blazing musk
#

Must be a normal cycle. I run "casual" because so many things we have ask for low heat

prisma briar
blazing musk
#

I missed earlier - is yours heat pump @clear ferry

dusky plank
#

ok laundry is a freebsd thingie

prisma briar
clear ferry
#

One full load cycle of mine

prisma briar
#

Probably around 1/4th the total power draw

#

But 3x as long

clear ferry
#

I need to check the exact model, i don't think this one is heat pump, my old one was

blazing musk
#

wow mine uses only 1.87/load

clear ferry
#

It's a bosch

prisma briar
#

Mine might be a bit higher because the garage it's in is only like 7C

#

It was nice having my garage heater set to 21c and getting in a warm car in the middle of winter but damn was that going to be expensive as far as power goes

clear ferry
#

Looks like it used 1.2kwh for a full cycle of extra dry with towels

prisma briar
#

So I lowered it to just keep the garage from heating which was the original purpose for it

clear ferry
#

My washroom is only 6c at the moment

blazing musk
#

we insulated our garage when we added on, even though there's currently no climate control in there

prisma briar
blazing musk
#

but our laundry is in a 3/4 bath

prisma briar
#

If I had just washed like a single change of clothes it would've probably used like 1/3 the power

clear ferry
#

What size is the American dryers? This is a big European one, at 9kg

prisma briar
#

Ours are measured in volume

blazing musk
prisma briar
clear ferry
#

You... Dry belts?

clear ferry
blazing musk
#

No, the belt that attached the drum to the motor

clear ferry
#

Oh

#

Lol

blazing musk
#

it did it a third time the day before our kids were delivered and our parents pitched in for a new set

clear ferry
#

I have never had a belt shred, and my last dryer was around 11 years old when I sold it, my in laws one is probably 30 years old

prisma briar
#

Looking through the manual for my washer all the max capacity instructions are based on volume, not weight

blazing musk
#

it probably needed new bearings or something but it was already a compromise - we were in the strange situation where we were trading houses with our landlord (purchased the house they were moving out of) and we took the rental's machines because they wanted their own.

prisma briar
#

7.4 ft^3 / .2 m^3

clear ferry
#

9kg apparently equals 122L

prisma briar
#

7.4 cu ft = 210 liters

blazing musk
#

in freedom units

clear ferry
#

So, double size, 4x power usage

#

Sounds American alright

prisma briar
#

1/3 the time

#

(a 3 hour dry cycle sounds so annoying)

clear ferry
#

Also American, we just wait for stuff, same day delivery, bah humbug

#

Put it on, do something else

prisma briar
#

You've never done a load of laundry because you wanted a specific clothing item to wear?

clear ferry
#

I never wash anything less than a full load though, and I do.. probably 6-8 of them per week

blazing musk
#

lol until I started doing washer notifications I kept forgetting to rotate the laundry and having to re-wash

glacial knot
#

y'all wait for your driers? o.0

prisma briar
#

Weird.

clear ferry
#

I have enough clothes to not wash for 2 months probably if I wanted

prisma briar
#

Ah, I have like maybe two weeks of clothes.

#

Never saw the point of keeping tons of clothes

#

I can wash all my clothes and towels in two loads, my bed sheets take another load.

clear ferry
#

Outside of underwear I probably haven't thrown out a piece of clothing in over 20 years

#

I still use thinkgeek shirts I ordered in 2003

prisma briar
#

I was 12 in 2003

clear ferry
#

I was 19

prisma briar
#

So I don't have any shirts from then

#

I do have at least one button down shirt I've had since highschool

#

I was probably going to trash it next time I go through my clothes, it's getting pretty tattered and worn.

clear ferry
#

The thinkgeek shirts have been ridiculously good quality

#

Can hardly see they are worn

#

And I wear them at least once a week

#

I do love the hacktoberfest shirts too

blazing musk
#

Any shirts I wear get holes after about 7-10 years shrug

clear ferry
#

Can't say I've ever had that problem, even with the Primark shirts

#

Shoes however, I go through two pairs per year usually

blazing musk
#

I try to repair the ones I care about but that only works so much

prisma briar
#

I'll replace buttons that get torn off of shirts but not much more

#

Mostly because I can't sew worth shit

#

Most people I know won't even do that, though, they'd just trash a shirt a button ripped off of

blazing musk
#

I'm thankful my mom had me take a sewing class at 7

glacial knot
#

I have a shirt around I need to re-attach the button on

prisma briar
#

My parents dropped the ball hard on teaching me life skills

glacial knot
#

but I also need to lose weight again to wear it. So I'm being lazy

blazing musk
#

:same:

prisma briar
#

My parents never went over finances, job hunting, cooking, sewing, basic carpentry, or anything. I've just always had an aptitude towards technical stuff so I've been able to figure most of it out to a functional degree.

#

Public school never touched on any of it either

blazing musk
#

ugh my google photo content search is doing awful right now

glacial knot
#

the trick to finances is to not be poor D:

blazing musk
#

I enjoyed home ec but I was too cocky and thought I knew more than I did :haha:

glacial knot
#

also job hunting o.0 Is there much to learn about that?

blazing musk
#

know people

prisma briar
glacial knot
#

oh yea, that helps.

blazing musk
#

I got my first real job because my mom (an elementary school teacher) was in a book group with a Boeing VP and her husband was in the C-suite of a company I was interested in.

umbral cliff
glacial knot
blazing musk
#

It was tech support, but at least at a recognizable company

umbral cliff
prisma briar
blazing musk
#

I've not had to really dress up for any of my interviews. Tech companies dgaf

glacial knot
umbral cliff
blazing musk
#

Business casual maybe

glacial knot
#

if you aren't going for a banker job, appropriate attire is a best guess either way 🤷
Just dress the way you would to a date

prisma briar
#

Yea, nobody ever went over that shit with me when I was a kid, lol.

umbral cliff
#

I wore a suit for the interview for my current job
And the current job dress code is just wear something (so t shirt and shorts is fine for example lol)

prisma briar
#

I definitely bombed the first couple interviews I did

glacial knot
blazing musk
#

After I got laid off that job (after 7 years lol) I did learn the hard way I should interview at my first picks last not first

prisma briar
#

I'd argue day to day work attire and interview attire are different

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

I wore a suit to my first job interview. But in reality it's just the safe fallback that's only safe because when it's wrong, people usually know you just wanted to be safe 😂

prisma briar
#

Especially if day to day work attire is a dinosaur onesie

glacial knot
#

yea, you should iron the tshirt for the interview^^

#

honestly though, depends on the industry and partially position in the industry

blazing musk
#

There were a bunch of people at my first job who didn't wear shoes most of the day. We'd get work emails about using caution in the kitchenette, somebody had broken glass...

prisma briar
#

That's kind of gross

glacial knot
#

yea, don't break glass D:

prisma briar
#

I'm just imagining how dirty my feet would be if I walked around my office all day barefoot

glacial knot
#

unless others have a habit of dragging in outside dirt with their shoes, not particularly

prisma briar
#

Especially in a communal kitchen

blazing musk
#

I did it once because I soaked my shoes riding my bike to work and didn't bring a backup pair

glacial knot
#

I should check if I'm technically violating any safety requirements when I walk around the lab in socks 🤔

prisma briar
#

Might be a slip regulation or something

glacial knot
#

yea. In the desk area it's even slightly too grippy due to the carpet

blazing musk
#

"new policy after we found toe jam in the samples"

glacial knot
#

but the lab is tiled or just concrete

#

well, our lab is industrial robots. So there'd have to be a lot of toe jam on there for it to be obvious

prisma briar
#

I was a general manager at a fast food joint for a few years when I got out of school, we had to either get our floors coated with an anti-slip coating or mandate anti-slip shoes for everyone.

blazing musk
glacial knot
#

similar robots, different tasks

prisma briar
#

Is that a robot in a puddle of blood?

blazing musk
prisma briar
glacial knot
blazing musk
glacial knot
#

or was. I assume they tore it down by now

prisma briar
#

And it made dried soap stick to the floor crazy hard, damn near had to take a power washer to get it off once it dried.

clear ferry
#

Started working at 9, worked all years since except one

prisma briar
#

I started working at 15, didn't move out until I was out of school at 20 though.

clear ferry
#

We get state funding to study outside our own town

#

That covered my rent and most of my food

prisma briar
#

I didn't flunk classes but I did the bare minimum to pass most of them

clear ferry
#

Work just added on top of that

prisma briar
#

I was living at home so I had no rent/food bills but I also had no income for things like gas to get to school, other than working

#

I did spend about a year selling minecraft mods around 2010

glacial knot
#

o.0 gas for school

clear ferry
#

LOL

glacial knot
#

y'all need some busses

clear ferry
#

We had busses, I still got a car the week I got a licence

prisma briar
#

My parents lived like 40 miles from the college I went to

clear ferry
#

Northern Norway is pretty rural for the most part

prisma briar
#

The bus was just not an option for me, lol. They didn't start running early enough for me to get to class on time

clear ferry
#

Really

#

Our busses start at around 5 usually

#

And go until 3

#

Ie, 2 hours they don't go

prisma briar
#

I think my earliest classes were 7:30 AM, a 5 AM bus would have made me late

glacial knot
#

how fucking slow are your busses? o.0

clear ferry
#

Interesting, school will never start before 08 here, usually 0830 or later

blazing musk
#

yeah our public transit is "good" by american standards and I still got stuck 15 miles from home because I missed the last bus at midnight-ish and they didn't start until 5 again

prisma briar
#

They generally don't go over maybe 15 mph in traffic and in the mornings a bus will stop every other block to let people on/off.

#

And there aren't direct routes

glacial knot
#

y'all need some actual busses 😂

#

what the fuck?

prisma briar
#

So often you'll need to go to a depot and transfer to another bus at least once on a trip

blazing musk
#

all the people here bitching about the current transit levies... they could have had a billion dollars in subsidies in 1969 for it but NOOOO it got voted down

prisma briar
#

There's areas of the city I grew up in I'd have needed a half-dozen different busses to get to from where I lived

#

Also the closest bus stop to my house was around 2 miles away

clear ferry
#

40miles here by bus would usually be 1h including around 30-50 stops

prisma briar
#

If I could stay on one bus, sure, but I'd have to get off at a depot and wait for another bus

#

They generally ran twice an hour

#

The busier routes maybe more but I was in the suburbs

clear ferry
#

Twice?

#

Ours usually do 6-10 per hour

prisma briar
#

If I had that I'd go everywhere by bus

clear ferry
#

And there are multiple lines covering the same stretches

#

So in reality, probably 40 departures per hour for some

prisma briar
#

There might be some slight overlap between routes here but it was generally coincidental and only for a couple blocks, and basically completely random

clear ferry
#

I currently live in the middle of farmland, and even here the bus does 2-3 per hour, we are talking middle of nowhere though

#

The one past my parents house does every 10 minutes for the main line, but it has 3 other ones passing by

blazing musk
#

yeah I wish public transit here was frequent enough I didn't have to think about it

clear ferry
#

I have done public transport maybe 3 times the last 15 years, all were to pick up new cars

prisma briar
#

I found this map someone put together of all the 'frequent' (at least one every 15 minutes) bus and lightrail routes in Denver

#

There's 15, and one of them only drives back and forth between the ends of a strip mall that's past it's prime.

#

Once you get on that core network it's not bad but getting to it sucks

#

And another 4 of those 15 are all on the same road

#

It's a notably long road, but still just that one road

clear ferry
#

Since the US is so dependant on archeic technology like fax, landlines, desk phones etc

#

what is the postal service like ?

prisma briar
#

In my experience extremely reliable and cheap

clear ferry
#

5 years ago they figured out we don't get enough letters to justify daily delivery, so we moved to every other day, so 2 week 1 and 3 week 2, etc

#

and even then I only get maybe... 1-2 letters per month

prisma briar
#

I get delivery 6 days a week and our postal system will do Amazon packages on the seventh

#

Some deal Amazon made with the postal union

blazing musk
#

Also they're subsidized by junk mail

prisma briar
#

Yea, lots of spam mail

clear ferry
#

interesting, I'd figure you rely a lot more on letters for communication when you rely on all the other stuff

#

I just put a sticker on my mailbox 15 years ago, haven't gotten any advertising since

prisma briar
#

Not sure why you think faxes/landlines/desk phones are common over here

clear ferry
#

I work with a lot of US people, in a US company 😄

#

they all have desk phones, and faxes

#

and I've seen a lot of people in this channel discuss landlines and calling their dealers to fix stuff

prisma briar
#

My company moved away from desk phones years ago

blazing musk
#

none of those in tech but faxes are still things for "private" stuff like medical records

clear ferry
#

Yeah, I haven't had a desk phone since 2004, most companies haven't since the early 2010s

prisma briar
#

I think I have a VOIP number but I just use my cell phone so I don't have to keep a stupid voip app on my phone

clear ferry
#

or to be fair, vpn based

blazing musk
#

yeah our "efficient" market has a number of competing solutions so none of them talk to each other

clear ferry
#

I did get a good chuckle when I saw the booth of people who "help you" with your taxes at walmart when I was in Atlanta

prisma briar
#

Our HR still has the ability to send/receive faxes, but it's all done from a workstation through a cloud fax provider and at this point is basically just a fancy way of removing the metadata from PDFs

blazing musk
#

we'd have automatic taxes if we didn't have Intuit, H&R Block, etc. lobbying to keep them complicated

prisma briar
#

If you actually need someone to prepare your taxes for you you don't go to a booth in a walmart, if you're a layman you can do your taxes yourself.

#

They're not hard

blazing musk
#

god, have you ever tried to use the free level of TurboTax though? So many traps for trying to push you into paying.

prisma briar
#

Yea

#

My state has offered free state-level e file since before I started filing my taxes though

blazing musk
#

We don't have state income tax because Gates, Bezos, et. al. like it that way and it was established in our constitution before they were a thing

prisma briar
#

Income taxes were introduced as a way for the government to continue to function after the passage of alcohol prohibition since beforehand the majority of the government's budget was from alcohol taxes

#

We should just go back to that

blazing musk
#

heh WA alcohol taxes are no joke

prisma briar
#

Legalize everything, tax it all

clear ferry
blazing musk
clear ferry
#

This one is hilarious

blazing musk
prisma briar
#

It's stupid and annoying but not really that much of a thing

#

Also state but for my state it's just 'fill in the value from this box on the federal form' for everything

blazing musk
#

Just a waste of time. Like arguing with health insurance over denials.

prisma briar
#

Pretty much

clear ferry
#

ho ho

#

health insurance

#

I'm not poking that nonsense

prisma briar
#

In my experience health insurance billing has been such a mess they were unable to justify or defend any of their bills

blazing musk
prisma briar
#

I literally got three different bills for three different amounts with the description 'Hospital stay' then the date of the stay

clear ferry
#

Remember I saw once an invoice for $1200 for one advil and walking into the ER

prisma briar
#

Insurance was supposed to have covered everything for mine, they waited years to come after me then came after me with that nonsense. I disputed it when it got reported to my credit and won

clear ferry
#

do you have to pay to have it or is yours included in your job ?

#

I've seen people pay more per month for it than I've paid in health expenses the last decade

prisma briar
#

Even employer-provided insurance is still paid, it's just generally a lot cheaper

#

I pay like $250/mo for insurance or something through my employer

blazing musk
#

And some employers pay fully; others you pay a share or it's paid for the employee and you pay a share for the dependents

prisma briar
#

Group insurance policies

blazing musk
#

I've had 2 employers that pay fully. The rest asked for $1-200/month

clear ferry
#

I'm capped at $200 a year for all medical expenses, I seldom hit that

prisma briar
#

Private health insurance costs also are paid before any income tax is taken out

#

I guess mine is only $180/mo

#

But I don't pay income tax on the money I earn to pay it

blazing musk
#

also co-pays. Mine went from $25 last year to $30 now. My "good" employers have had $10 co-pays.

prisma briar
#

My insurance is fine. If I had to buy my medicine without insurance it'd cost slightly more than I'm paying for insurance every month and insurance has a number of other perks, too.

#

Mostly because of stupid patents

blazing musk
#

then insurance coding for the same procedures can change how it's paid. I got dinged my deductible for a colonoscopy because it was billed as a "diagnostic" instead of "screening" and everybody, including the govt agencies that are supposed to handle that bullshit said "not us, talk to <other entity>"

#

"No Surprises Helpdesk" more like "No Help Helpdesk"

glacial knot
#

you'd be surprised if you actually receive help 😮

clear ferry
#

I've done a few of those conoloscopies

#

I'm not paying to get filled with gas

#

I do that for free and enjoy it

glacial knot
#

we all know you are a pervert 😉

clear ferry
#

¯_(ツ)_/¯

#

ero-sensei

prisma briar
#

On another note, I wonder if I can find a home assistant addon that adds a container with grafana/influxdb to log to

glacial knot
#

do you mean ero-manga sensei? 😂

clear ferry
#

what

#

log to?

prisma briar
#

Yea, HA can export to influxdb

clear ferry
#

yes

#

I have done that for years

#

but, it sounded like you wanted grafana \ influx to log to something else

prisma briar
#

No, I want HA to log to grafana and influx

clear ferry
#

or you could just run a sane install of HA and run those as containers

prisma briar
#

That's no fun

clear ferry
#

haos nonsense kids these days

#

I need to start making some good graylog dashboards soon

blazing musk
#

I don't have time to fiddle around so I run mine as add-ons

clear ferry
#

and get those into HA somehow, or just do tab rotation on my kitchen screen

prisma briar
#

Is there a grafana addon?

blazing musk
#

Yes

prisma briar
#

yay I can be lazy

clear ferry
#

I don't really call 3 minutes to run docker compose pull && docker compose up -d once every two weeks or so for fiddling

blazing musk
#

I have mine set up to log to Victoria Metrics

prisma briar
clear ferry
#

but you have to have someone make the addon first, and then you are locked to whatever version that addon is running, and whatever config variables it has exposed

blazing musk
#

But yeah, all of my graphs are from Grafana add on

clear ferry
#

do add-ons still auto update ?

prisma briar
#

Judging by the pending addon updates I have no

blazing musk
#

They post update notifications, but you still have to manually acknowledge them

clear ferry
#

nagging

#

got it

#

better than people that run watchtower at least

prisma briar
#

There's an auto update slider

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

gah kill it

#

gross

clear ferry
#

Reminds me, need to setup cloudflare companion again

#

was nice to deploy a container and have it create dns entries automatically

prisma briar
#

I don't think I even have docker on my host

#

I do have a couple LXC containers with docker in them though

clear ferry
#

yuck lxc

prisma briar
#

I like it

clear ferry
#

I'm gonna call @glacial knot and say you said that

blazing musk
glacial knot
#

I liked lxc back when docker wasn't a thing 😂

#

these days, docker is just easier
And podman can adopt most of that ease, with most of what lxc offers over docker

#

we did some fantastic things with lxc and xfs in the before days

#

wouldn't do it that way anymore these days

clear ferry
#

Not tried podman yet

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

well, I had another one that did it for opnsense too

umbral cliff
#

Wonder if there's a way to autocreate DNS entries into a windows DNS server

clear ferry
#

probably yes

#

also yuck windows dns

#

I primarily used cloudflare companion in my k8s lab, to autodeploy services with ipv6 exposing

#

with lbmetal

umbral cliff
#

Plus syncs across networks easily

clear ferry
prisma briar
#

Nothing like weird-ass primary-primary DNS configurations and back-channel zone transfers

#

🪟

blazing musk
clear ferry
#

I remember I was troubleshooting why a customer had issues deploying software to his computers a few years ago

#

appears someone had disabled dns timeout in their windows dns

umbral cliff
#

I just do basic DNS stuff there lol
Fuck anything more advanced with windows AD

clear ferry
#

so every entry still existed

#

with 42 different hostnames per ip

umbral cliff
prisma briar
forest edge
#

Wonder if a magnet will force it open

forest edge
#

it's only a matter of time before you start hearing about home thefts due to "smart locks" like how you did with all those kia thefts

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

locks should not be complex and allow multiple means of opening them

#

that thing had nfc, keypad, bio lock, used wifi and othe protocols

#

all it takes it finding a weakness with something that, that company itself didn't even invent just to open it

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

wait, what? Was that the actual issue? Is that why it hasn't been an issue at all here? 😂

forest edge
#

auto thefts still happen, that was just a more of drop the ball situation which got alot of PR

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

1998 in Germany 😮

umbral cliff
#

That's why a USB could make it start. You bypass the key part, and just turn the ignition dial

#

Normal countries it's bad that you can do that
But at least you can't start it with a USB

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

Jup. About the time it needs to flow through bureaucracy

umbral cliff
#

Plus doesn't mean manufacturers weren't including them before that date either

glacial knot
#

Apparently a German insurance company pushed hard for it, the moment they saw them on the market

forest edge
#

all in all further proof that the more complex you make something the more vulnerable it is

umbral cliff
#

The Kia issue shows that when you ignore important security features they make it more vulnerable

glacial knot
#

Nonces just make security more complex. Let's drop them 😮

#

@clear ferry what do you think? Nonce or not?

clear ferry
#

you mean vendor specific names for the same shit ?

glacial knot
#

???

clear ferry
#

define: nonce

glacial knot
#

Number used once. The common definition in security

clear ferry
#

oh, when I hear nonce I think of the definition used once, as in cisco VPC vs IEEE MLAG

forest edge
#

cars with push button starts also get a lot of thefts

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

the more complex a vehicle it with eletronics and means of starting it the faster someone can steal it

#

they were clocking people stealing shit in like seconds.. not minutes

glacial knot
#

The Kia case is the opposite of what you claim 😂

umbral cliff
#

Push button starts are using advanced repeaters, just don't keep keys close to the car (which is good advice as people are more likely to break in and steal the key anyway)

Older cars are more vulnerable, and car theft has been trending down over time. Especially with things like immobilisers, or being unable to hot wire a car, alarms, etc

forest edge
#

granted there has been improvements over the old "hot wire" but we went right over the happy medium and onto the next easy thing imo

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

as i said, it's not just the kia thing

#

all push button vehicles are noted as being easier than other types

umbral cliff
#

which is only because of repeaters existing
You just don't put your keys right by the door, or close to where the car is being kept overnight

#

Just like you wouldn't put your car keys in the garage next to the car with older cars

forest edge
#

if someone has any kind of remote capabilites to start thier vehicle rather via fob or online, breaking the window in some vehicles allows someone to drive the thing away without tripping the auto shut off

#

this is just scratching the surface of what is leaking of how people are stealing vehicles.. the FBI here done announced there are tons of ways for people to steal vehicles these days where it only takes the person, in public view a few seconds to get in and drive away

umbral cliff
#

If you have an app, then sure you could have people steal your password, more reason to use mfa there

umbral cliff
clear ferry
#

I wish my Volvo could do FOB remote start, apparently that is legal in the US, but not in europe due to security

forest edge
#

like your solution to something that shouldn't and wasn't even a problem before lol

umbral cliff
#

Most crimes will go after what cars are easy though, a car from the 90s vs a car from 2023, thief will take the 90s car since its easier

umbral cliff
forest edge
#

just diffrent means

umbral cliff
#

Like requiring an immobiliser

#

Which is mandatory in the eu and australia for example

#

Though i'm sure you will say an immobiliser is useless

forest edge
#

quick search pulls up that NZ is the highest vehicle theft country in the world.. pretty close to you lol

umbral cliff
#

Ok? NZ isn't australia though

forest edge
#

just ironic cause you tried to make it a US only thing yet it's your neighbor that leads the pack lol

umbral cliff
#

I'm not making it a US only thing
I was mentioning one of the things that stops car thefts, is required in some countries but not others, I only knew aus and USA off the top of my head

#

Just like remote start, no clue the legality of it in australia, but its obviously legal in the us and not in europe

forest edge
#

my overall point still stanbds. the more they make sure like vehicles and home locks more complex, the easier it will be at some point for someone to take advantage of

umbral cliff
#

Or they make it more complex and it helps prevent thefts, like immobilisers

You can't disagree that made car ignition systems more complicated. Yet it also made things more secure

forest edge
#

I had said they had made improvements but instead of stopping when it worked they just kept going

Somebody tried to steal our rarely-used Suburban which doesn't have an immobilizer but does have a hall-effect sensor to determine if the ignition cylinder was actually rotated.

They broke the sensor completely off in their effort 🙃

blazing musk

We don't bother backing. The laser is basically just a tennis ball, point it at a reference on your vehicle. It's filtered through a diffuser to make a line

I put a low-tech piece of blue painter's tape on the garage floor where the inside edge of the door lands. As long as I can see it in the backup camera, I'm good

Looked at an instant hot water heater, it wants three 40A 240V circuits

#

Or 80% of my whole home's service, lol

glacial knot
#

if it's instant, just put a couple super caps right in front

#

shouldn't pull the power for long

prisma briar
#

I imagine it pulls that as long as hot water is being drawn

#

A natural gas one might work for me

#

but idk how to work with gas D:

glacial knot
#

ventilate. that's about all there's to know about gas^^

prisma briar
#

Yea, my existing hot water heater has ventilation, I imagine that'd work for an on demand one too

glacial knot
#

though, while I haven't looked myself. My parents recently looked at kitchen stuff
And apparently the current cool tech is essentially a reservoir close to the faucet that's very well isolated

#

so you can draw 10l or so, which is generally good enough

gleaming crater
#

Just be like Brazil and have those shower heads that hook straight to mains power

ocean oar
#

The beauty of on-demand gas hot water is you can just put them outside. No need for a flue

gleaming crater
#

My house will never get a gas hookup :/

#

It woulda been like 50k/house to extend it before the city said no new hookups

ocean oar
#

Mine either, likely. NZ is on the path to phasing out residential gas (by cranking up the daily and per-kWh charges to discourage new installs), in favour of heat pump hot water and induction cooking

gleaming crater
#

Yeah my city has rebates on all that new kinda equipment

#

I could get $500 off a heat pump water heater here

ocean oar
#

Cost of installs here can be pretty grim here too. My next door neighbours just discovered their gas main was leaking, were quoted $8k for the replacement gas line, or $12k for heat pump hot water.

#

With the dramatically lower cost of operation seems like a no-brainer, probably break even on that in 4-5 years.

gleaming crater
#

The water heater tho seems like a bit of a lie

#

It’s cooling your house and your furnace is working to heat it back up

#

Unless it’s in an isolated area
