Hah, I often need a small computer to spin up a small off grid data center to do hardware testing

static schooner

Currently I lug around a Edgeline 1000

And sometimes I need a "remote" node to replicate a customer situation, and an entire dl380 is quite overkill

rare patrol
#

so I tried to make a script that just calls media_player.play_media, telling a Roku player to open TuneIn and have it start playing a specific station, only to hit a roadblock that I'm pretty sure is a bug with the TuneIn app on Roku...

apparently they actually cared enough about my odd use case with Home Assistant to escalate it to a supervisor within just 2 email messages lmao

#

for details on exactly wtf I mean - to be clear, I don't need help with anything, there's just no way to make this work because of a problem with TuneIn itself:

service: media_player.play_media
target:
  entity_id: media_player.roku
data:
  media_content_id: 1453
  media_content_type: app
  extra:
    content_id: s34568
    media_type: live
#

what this is supposed to do is open TuneIn and begin playing KOST 103.5. the TuneIn app on the Roku, however, says it can't play it because there's no compatible streams. but when you search for the station in the UI on the Roku itself, it suddenly has no problem playing the exact same station.

primal laurel
#

Is it only with this specific station or also others?

rare patrol
# primal laurel Is it only with this specific station or also others?

other stations as well. they first claimed it was because the Roku players didn't support AAC - which is wrong anyway, but I rolled with it & then followed up with "if that's the case, how come it plays just fine when played from the UI?"

then they followed up asking for technical info & a video demonstrating what it's doing exactly, and now I'm waiting for a reply after the one I've posted a screenshot of

#

wouldn't be my first roundabout with a company's tech support over what ultimately turned out to be a software bug - went back and forth with Native Instruments over some libraries catastrophically breaking if the samplerate is set to 192khz when I exported my tracks, and managed to trick iZotope customer support into... providing support for an OS they don't develop for lol

#

the case with iZotope is especially funny, I falsely put my OS down as Windows 10 just to see where it would get me. after 12 emails back and forth I ended up in a call + remote desktop session with the person who oversees their entire customer support team, at the same I used stock GNOME with only 3 or so extensions, they could've very easily noticed what I was running wasn't Windows 10... yet somehow they didn't! (or at least said nothing about it)

it ultimately didn't lead to solving my issue, but looking back at it now I still laugh about it a bit, everything was either running in WINE and therefore looked like ancient Windows UI, or it was something obvious like the GNOME overview or the "Run A Command" dialog that I even used to open regedit for them

iron granite

Our government has a Gamma detection grid and makes the values openly available. Unfortunately I'm not able to write an integration for it.

#

But I might be able to scrape it 🤔

prisma briar

That's well documented

When our government publishes data it's "Here's this xls my secretary put together, hopefully it's right"

forest edge
#

other countries tend to have more time on their hands

prisma briar
#

Yea that happens when a country continues to maintain and improve their infrastructure instead of giving up in the 70s and letting it all rot away.

forest edge
#

more like when a countries citizens do not want to fork out that much more in taxes to pay for that kind of stuff

prisma briar
#

That argument falls apart when you realize how often we don't do things cheaper, we just do them dumber

forest edge
#

well thats capitalism

#

most the "public" made data isn't even done by our government, they are outsourced

static schooner
#

It's another business opportunity

iron granite
#

This system is a leftover from the civil protection during the cold war. It was created to detect and predict fallout, but can also be used in case of nuclear accidents. It was handed over to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection later.

prisma briar
#

It seems like a good idea to have eyes on stray gamma spikes in general

forest edge
#

which isn't something that's needed in the US

#

would be nice if we had a better radon information though, but that would be state level

prisma briar
#

In my area they warn people who have homes in radon areas to have levels checked and pipes installed

forest edge
#

right.. they warn but they don't actively monitor or check

#

least they didn't use to

blazing musk
#

I got an AirThings specifically because it has radon sensing

#

Then I learned there's a normal background level

forest edge
#

think some building codes in some counties may require an initial test and if proven a new home may need to be built with a radon system but older homes are are just left to thier own issues

prisma briar
#

They enforce it in apartments at least I think

#

But that's different than a home

forest edge
#

can't remember if it's state or federal but one of them provides a free radon test kit.. so atleast that's something but not enough imo

clear ferry
#

Yeah, all new houses here have to have radon treatment, and older houses aren't sellable unless they have had them measured and fixed

prisma briar
#

You can get radon test kits at most hardware stores too

clear ferry
#

Our insurance companies lend us them for free

#

For long time measurements

blazing musk
#

Apparently the national average is 1.3pCi/L

prisma briar
#

$25 for a radon test kit here, looks like it's a disc of something, I assume it reacts with the radon then they measure the level of reaction when you send it in

blazing musk
#

2 is the "action level" and 4 is the "immediate action level"

primal laurel
#

I only know about radon because of the office. Otherwise i never even heard of it

forest edge
#

but those don't do long term just an initial and radon levels can spike and what not. as in you can test during a low period and never see the bigger issue

prisma briar
#

The ones my city recommended testing facility has look like little canisters with a dark gray substance in them

#

idk why I'm describing it when I can just screenshot it

forest edge
#

oh no the one i used didnj't look like that

#

it was a plastic packet with a hanging string that you opened on one end

clear ferry
#

Everyone who owns an apartment or house here knows about radon

forest edge
#

prob worse in the north

#

more rock the more likely you are to have it

prisma briar
#

I got a 'hazards' packet from the city when I moved in, went over where it was common to find asbestos and radon testing and signs of lead paint and such

#

It was a bunch of photo-copied one or two page pamphlets

blazing musk
#

I found lead paint on an old exterior door. Started sanding it and it smelled sweet

forest edge
#

lol lead paint

blazing musk
#

So I stopped and tested. Bingo

prisma briar
#

I don't think my house has lead paint left if it ever had any to begin with

blazing musk
#

The lockset area was all chewed up so we disposed of it and installed a replacement.

forest edge
#

lead paint and even products with asbestos are not as much of a fear as they make it out to be as long as you can refrain from licking it

prisma briar
#

Never seen any signs of it and I know the entire exterior/siding was ripped off and replaced in the 2010s

blazing musk
#

Disturbing it (sanding, removal, etc) are the hazard

forest edge
#

just paint over it

prisma briar
#

The problem with asbestos here is they put it in that stupid ceiling popcorn and it all gets dispursed when the celing is cut or hit

#

I haven't tested but I've been operating under the assumption mine has asbestos in it

#

My parents did and their house is newer than mine in a similar region

#

Was going to be like $15k to have it remediated or we could just not do anything other than air paint it

#

If you remove it yourself and a regulator finds out I've heard they freak out

forest edge
#

only because they like to make money having you pay to have it "professionally" removed

prisma briar

And when Microsoft includes a modern alternative along-side the legacy version of something, people complain that functionality is duplicated (Control Panel / Settings App being a prime example).

#

Rock, meet hard place 🤷‍♀️

#

Honestly, I'm kinda thankfull Microsoft has maintaned such stringent backwards compatability. The MSP I work for has a few print shops as clients, and we can run their ancient software and silk-screen printing machines on Windows 11 no problem.
Those same machines require PowerMac G3/G4 towers if you want to run the associated Apple software.

And nobody wants to maintain PowerPC Macs in a production environment in 2023 🤢

[0175][5c] = 92 (% battery)
[0367][e500] = 0xe5 = 229 (× 0.1°C = 22.9°C)
[0468][6f] = 111 (× 0.5% = 55.5% humidity)
[077d][0903] = 0x309 = 777 (ppm CO2)

solar zealot
#

how much did that unit cost you

ocean oar

Gateway was about $250 USD equivalent, the temperature/humidity/co2 sensor about $100.

Weird question for the off-topic chat:
How would you do ventilation in a very well isolated energy efficient house?
HR+++ 3-layer glass panes, floor isolation, roof isolation, extra isolating layers on the walls, etc.

Obviously, I don't want to just pull cold air in, and it needs to be automated as much as possible, but in a loosely coupled kind of way

#

There are ventilation machines that extract heat from the outgoing air, but I would want to do that in a centralized place in the attic on the ventilation shaft, rather than put one in the living room and one in each office. Both because of cost and because of the noise that the decentralized ones add. But then I lose out on a possibility to automate and regulate per room, and although I do recover the heat, you still feel the cold air coming in through the regular ventilation holes

solar zealot
#

so supposedly there is a ventilation system in the house

misty pumice
#

Sort of. There is a ventilation shaft and it connects to the kitchen (the thing above the stove), toilet and bathroom. But none in the living room directly.

#

There is no active ventilation installed yet

#

So I am free to choose in that regard

#

We are going to replace the windows and basically the entire backside of the house, the outside of the living room

#

It's a concrete house from the 70s, the walls have been isolated already, the rest we're going to take care of in the first year we live there. We're moving in this spring

#

But for planning out the windows, the kind of glass and ventilation holes, we need to have a plan

solar zealot
#

from the people i know who have such air system, its mostly just centralized heating and then under floor distribution to each room with some valve type of thing to block it off

#

kinda similar to in floor heating

misty pumice
#

Thanks! We want to do floor heating too, that's the first thing we're going to get done there before we move in

solar zealot
#

i dont know how about the recovery on that works, but if thats left alone, i suppose this wouldnt be difficult to wire smartly into ha

misty pumice
#

So there should be no problem pulling cold air in, as long as you recover the heat on the outgoing air?

#

I'll still need to manually open and close the ventilation valves per room then I guess, unless there is some smart ESP32 design that will turn the knobs

solar zealot
#

i kinda feel this would be not a comfort issue due to centralized pre heating, but i could guess the outwards ventilation could be set to circulate instead of blow outside to some extend

#

but thats totally out of my knowledge

misty pumice
#

It's all very complicated, some people say that HR+++ glass does not make sense if you have a ventilation hole where cold air comes is

solar zealot
#

you could check the net for fitting smart valves if those units cant be bought with some already

misty pumice
#

Thanks I'll do that!

iron granite
#

You might want to contact an expert for that. With additional insulation and poor/wrong ventilation you could get a problem with mold.

Looks like last year I had 2 spare smart plugs, I was setting xmas stuff and re-enabling the xmas automation I've noticed that I need 2 smart plugs XD I guess I'll need to order a couple of zigbee ones.

I bit the bullet and enrolled to the beta just for fun, my bulb is updating to firmware 3.6.54 , went to the forum they point you to when enrolled in the beta to look for the release notes and there is no update to that subforum for years, except for some spam bot messages 😂

in my case it wasn´t working well even there, I only wanted a bulb that I could trigger a sunrise scene from an iOS automation, HA support is desired but not fundamental, and the scenes worked wrong from the Nanoleaf app and blocked the bulb when launched from the home app. I have a Wiz wifi+matter bulb here that works pretty well with both HA and iOS , gonna pick up another one that have that sunrise mode and try. Too bad it is not thread, I wanted to get rid of adding more devices to my wifi network, but...

guys, weird question, can I control power of a specific usb port on my pi that has HAOS running so I can power on and off something?

#

more context: I was playing soldering and assembled a 4x4x4 led cube, but I dont want it to run 24x7, and its usb powered. I could have an usb switch, but that would defeat the purpose, once all my lights are already being controlled by HAOS

Over the last week, I've been continuing my 3D printing journey by getting my Octoprint system up and running. I've also been integrating Octoprint with Home Assistant. One of the annoyances I encountered along the way is that the Ender 3 will accept power over the USB connection. This is useful for programming, but annoying in normal use. This ...

#

this should work

jade totem
#

thanks, let me have a read

#

thanks I think that will do the trick, now the only concern and where I have to be very careful is to power off the correct USB, not the one that has my skyconnect 😉

prisma briar
#

I'm fairly certain that's an all or nothing thing on the RPi

#

You can either have them all powered or none powered

jade totem
#

darn, than no. I needed to turn of a specific port, just so the led cube doesnt remain powered on all night

#

the link does mention each port beind addressed, so we might have a chance, just need to specify the correct one

#

unless hub-crtl.c goes all in

prisma briar
#

It also mentions he had to turn off every port for it to actually shut off.

jade totem
#

the part that he does not address and where I think it my fail me is that he is not using that in his HAOS host, but in another pi.
I could probably do something like that had I had another PI where the USB ports were less important, but the current one holds my antenna as well

prisma briar
#

I'm pretty sure he's controlling an RPi dedicated to his 3D printer over wifi.

primal laurel
#

not true, you can turn off power per port

#

that's what uhubctl does

jade totem
#

yeah, he does mention his PI count is up to 5, so I reckon its not gonna be his HAOS one

#

ok, back to the drawing board

prisma briar
#

The behavior is different between RPi 3 and RPi 4

#

RPi 3 has two groups of two ports that can be turned off, RPi 4 is all or nothing

primal laurel
#

for pi 4b you need a hub that supports it then

#

but apparently those hubs are quite rare

jade totem
#

so, not the usb on the board itself

primal laurel
#

im not sure if turning off the power also disables communication. Probably not

#

but if it doesn't, they you could also externally power the stuff you want to keep alive

#

any dumb hub will do in that case

prisma briar
#

You could do something like put a relay or mosfet on the power line for that USB cable and control it from a gpio pin too

jade totem
#

there is the option of having a smart plug on mains and a regular usb charger to juice up the cube, similar to what I have for christmas lights,

#

now that mosfet relay idea might be something to read on... im learing this tinkering pish (at a later age, I might add) but hey, why not

#

using GPIO to power the cube might be doable

primal laurel
#

GPIO cant supply power

prisma briar
#

You can't pull power directly from GPIO pins

jade totem
#

hmmm

prisma briar
#

You might get like 50mA out of them, might be enough for a single dim LED

primal laurel
#

I was thinking:
rpi --> powered hub --> anything you want to keep connected (like zigbee)
rpi --> cube

Then turning off power will not affect the hub but your cube will turn off

jade totem
#

hmmm, I see what you mean

primal laurel
#

kind of like when I turn off my pc my headset is still charging

The Pi Hut

Turn your USB devices on/off using a remote switch or a Raspberry Pi, Arduino and other devices! This module enables power to a USB device to be turned on/off via a USB power switch (MOSFET). Power goes IN via the micro-USB side and OUT via the USB-A side. The maximum current rating for the switch is 2.5A. The onboard

prisma briar
# prisma briar You can't pull power directly from GPIO pins

There is a 5v pin on the header with the GPIO pins but there's nothing special about it compared to the USB port 5v (except it's not switched at all). If the light doesn't need any data at all you could power a mosfet or relay from that 5v pin

#

But you can't power it from the GPIO pin itself

primal laurel
#

I've done something like that before

jade totem
#

now that might be something...

#

im willing to try that

imma order me up one or two of them

She's posting some pictures on bereal where she's creating a new Tinkerbell dress because she couldn't find a green dress

I can hardly find anything that fits me and is like captain hook
