we have...buzzwords
Currently I lug around a Edgeline 1000
Zimablade is more handy
And sometimes I need a "remote" node to replicate a customer situation, and an entire dl380 is quite overkill
If we have the foo fighters, why don't we have the bar savers
Two foos walk into a bar, I pity them
the zimacube mentioned above has some very weird pcie allocation choices
which alongside other stuff isnt reflected in their materials yet
id wait for the ga release, so you dont end up buying stuff you dont actually receive
Oh no. Really?
Yeah. It's a remote transceiver signal over the +5v side of the lights
so I tried to make a script that just calls media_player.play_media, telling a Roku player to open TuneIn and have it start playing a specific station, only to hit a roadblock that I'm pretty sure is a bug with the TuneIn app on Roku...
apparently they actually cared enough about my odd use case with Home Assistant to escalate it to a supervisor within just 2 email messages lmao
for details on exactly wtf I mean - to be clear, I don't need help with anything, there's just no way to make this work because of a problem with TuneIn itself:
service: media_player.play_media
target:
entity_id: media_player.roku
data:
media_content_id: 1453
media_content_type: app
extra:
content_id: s34568
media_type: live
what this is supposed to do is open TuneIn and begin playing KOST 103.5. the TuneIn app on the Roku, however, says it can't play it because there's no compatible streams. but when you search for the station in the UI on the Roku itself, it suddenly has no problem playing the exact same station.
Is it only with this specific station or also others?
other stations as well. they first claimed it was because the Roku players didn't support AAC - which is wrong anyway, but I rolled with it & then followed up with "if that's the case, how come it plays just fine when played from the UI?"
then they followed up asking for technical info & a video demonstrating what it's doing exactly, and now I'm waiting for a reply after the one I've posted a screenshot of
wouldn't be my first roundabout with a company's tech support over what ultimately turned out to be a software bug - went back and forth with Native Instruments over some libraries catastrophically breaking if the samplerate is set to 192khz when I exported my tracks, and managed to trick iZotope customer support into... providing support for an OS they don't develop for lol
the case with iZotope is especially funny, I falsely put my OS down as Windows 10 just to see where it would get me. after 12 emails back and forth I ended up in a call + remote desktop session with the person who oversees their entire customer support team, at the same I used stock GNOME with only 3 or so extensions, they could've very easily noticed what I was running wasn't Windows 10... yet somehow they didn't! (or at least said nothing about it)
it ultimately didn't lead to solving my issue, but looking back at it now I still laugh about it a bit, everything was either running in WINE and therefore looked like ancient Windows UI, or it was something obvious like the GNOME overview or the "Run A Command" dialog that I even used to open regedit for them

american toxic tipping culture leaking into AI is funny as hell

They started doing it a decade ago here, I've yet to give a tip
Tipping culture here got insane.
Every random place asks for a tip, literal cashiers have tip jars now
It's so stupid
YESSS
If anyone asks me for a tip I say || don't eat yellow snow ||
Went to a Mexican place in Georgia, they actually had a sign saying "no need to tip, we have decent wages here" that was interesting
How many times are you boosting @iron granite

is there balcony power plant inverter compatible with homeassistant without drama and + points for local
I know there are some that use mqtt and don't validate TLS certificates
#hardware-archived can better help there
Deye inverters
Might need an addon, but they publish the data over a local web thingy
And I always wished it was inverted
nuclear fission? Noobs, I have nuclear fusion at home
a balcony at your nuclear power plant?
Set up a mic and listen for the clicks
Radon actually makes sense to track, but you're not picking it up with a geiger counter.
Hmm, I guess there are ones that can detect it, the one I've played with just couldn't.
Ah, looks like you need to specifically buy one for measuring alpha.
actually I have seen a project which did this, its not that difficult. I think it was on hackster.io
The cheaper ones cannot detect Alpha radiation. The counting tube itself shields it.
Makes sense that a transparent tube would be more expensive
You could probably find where the detector pulses for a detection and set up an esphome to count those pulses and report it
Looks like someone did that. https://devices.esphome.io/devices/geiger-counter
Our government has a Gamma detection grid and makes the values openly available. Unfortunately I'm not able to write an integration for it.
But I might be able to scrape it 🤔
where api link
That's well documented
When our government publishes data it's "Here's this xls my secretary put together, hopefully it's right"
other countries tend to have more time on their hands
Yea that happens when a country continues to maintain and improve their infrastructure instead of giving up in the 70s and letting it all rot away.
more like when a countries citizens do not want to fork out that much more in taxes to pay for that kind of stuff
That argument falls apart when you realize how often we don't do things cheaper, we just do them dumber
well thats capitalism
most the "public" made data isn't even done by our government, they are outsourced
It's another business opportunity
This system is a leftover from the civil protection during the cold war. It was created to detect and predict fallout, but can also be used in case of nuclear accidents. It was handed over to the Federal Office for Radiation Protection later.
It seems like a good idea to have eyes on stray gamma spikes in general
which isn't something that's needed in the US
would be nice if we had a better radon information though, but that would be state level
In my area they warn people who have homes in radon areas to have levels checked and pipes installed
I got an AirThings specifically because it has radon sensing
Then I learned there's a normal background level
think some building codes in some counties may require an initial test and if proven a new home may need to be built with a radon system but older homes are are just left to thier own issues
can't remember if it's state or federal but one of them provides a free radon test kit.. so atleast that's something but not enough imo
Yeah, all new houses here have to have radon treatment, and older houses aren't sellable unless they have had them measured and fixed
You can get radon test kits at most hardware stores too
$25 for a radon test kit here, looks like it's a disc of something, I assume it reacts with the radon then they measure the level of reaction when you send it in
2 is the "action level" and 4 is the "immediate action level"
I only know about radon because of the office. Otherwise i never even heard of it
yea it's a packet or least the ones i used you hang a little off the floor for like 3 days or something then send it in
but those don't do long term just an initial and radon levels can spike and what not. as in you can test during a low period and never see the bigger issue
The ones my city recommended testing facility has look like little canisters with a dark gray substance in them
idk why I'm describing it when I can just screenshot it
oh no the one i used didnj't look like that
it was a plastic packet with a hanging string that you opened on one end
Everyone who owns an apartment or house here knows about radon
I got a 'hazards' packet from the city when I moved in, went over where it was common to find asbestos and radon testing and signs of lead paint and such
It was a bunch of photo-copied one or two page pamphlets
I found lead paint on an old exterior door. Started sanding it and it smelled sweet
lol lead paint
So I stopped and tested. Bingo
I don't think my house has lead paint left if it ever had any to begin with
The lockset area was all chewed up so we disposed of it and installed a replacement.
lead paint and even products with asbestos are not as much of a fear as they make it out to be as long as you can refrain from licking it
Never seen any signs of it and I know the entire exterior/siding was ripped off and replaced in the 2010s
Disturbing it (sanding, removal, etc) are the hazard
just paint over it
The problem with asbestos here is they put it in that stupid ceiling popcorn and it all gets dispursed when the celing is cut or hit
I haven't tested but I've been operating under the assumption mine has asbestos in it
My parents did and their house is newer than mine in a similar region
Was going to be like $15k to have it remediated or we could just not do anything other than air paint it
If you remove it yourself and a regulator finds out I've heard they freak out
only because they like to make money having you pay to have it "professionally" removed
I installed an air conditioner then figured out afterwards I was supposed to get a permit for it for some stupid reason
Is it just me or does anyone else want to ping Tinkerer when he posts that gif about silent responding
Hollywood gonna Hollywood
while there is no disputing the dangers people made a lot of money making others fear it more than it really should have. the stuff has been used both residentially and commercially for years without anymore issue than anything else we currently still deal with
so many good (in terms of working for what you need it too) products have been banned it's crazy
"You need to lose weight. Here, smoke these cigarettes and snort this blow. Now go roll in that field of asbestos."
creosote would be nice to still get your hands on from time to time imo
Huh, I didn't realize Judy Garland was Liza Minnelli's mom
Who I only know because of Arrested Development, lol
Railroad ties are funny because you can only really find them under the table...
I don't know if you live in the states or not but here almost every county has a designated discard lumber yard where old railroad ties and telephone poles are stacked and even tho you can't "buy" from these yards most often than not they don't mind people taking some off thier hands from time to time.
not sure if it's legal to do that but it's less work for them
only 3.6 roentgen?
The average of the 2 nearest stations is 0.071 µSv/h
how many roentgen is that
isn't monitoring that stuff basically just you seeing your death before you actually die?
7.1 microroentgen per hour
Roentgen sounds like a meme
I think it's more of a warning signal
But now he makes sure when it rises he will lie on a piece of film
And it will display a full x-ray of his body
Jk
I could automate the change from ambient ventilation to protective ventilation now. And closing the gastight doors 🤔
Bunker Assistant
accute radiation poising is a pretty terrible way to die
When you're in a bunker you have more than enough time to set it up
Is there also inaccurate?
doomsday addon
ACCUTE
Oh
Tupp
so instead of dieing withg everyone else you choose the trap yourself in a box and die from the many ways of lack of resources kill people?
Year of the Vault
I've watched a lot of doomsday movies, I will survive
And played Fallout
yea reality won't be like in movies lol
think i'd rather die from radation than starvation or dehydration
both are pretty painful
Radiation too
radiation poisoning is the worst way to die you can imagine
again not movies.. the levels that would kill everyone wouldn't be instantly glowing green lol
I'm hype for the series
What does that even mean?
Accurate
like what happened to the scientist who died from the nuclear exposure. the levels that would kill us wouldn't be that instense (yet)
Lemme watch it rn
A number of scientists died from nuclear exposure, idk who you mean
we would all die from like cancer etc
Some from huge amounts at once, some from small amounts over time
dieing from cancer kills you in years
but it's not as painful
Maybe? Some radioactive elements bioaccumulate and the scary ones cause a lot of immediate issues
accute radiation poisoning kills you in days
Painfully
The government doesn't have a stockpile of iodine pills for nothing
The demon core was a sphere of plutonium that was involved in two fatal radiation accidents when scientists tested it as a fissile core of an early atomic bomb. It was manufactured by the Manhattan Project, the U.S. nuclear weapon development effort during World War II. It was a subcritical mass that weighed 6.2 kilograms (14 lb) and was 89 mill...
Those guys were pretty reckless from what I've heard
There have been many criticality accidents - with short lifespans afterwards
Separating a critical mass against gravity with a screwdriver by hand is wtf
pretty crazy story, watched a documentary about it
I'm a big hype now
the power armour does look very true to the game, I liked that
Dogmeat seems to be a Belgian Malinois instead of a German Shepherd, but still good
it's a slippery slope
I mean the countries flag colors are the same
RE: the "tamper":
He noted that since inertia was the key, the densest materials were preferable, and identified gold, rhenium, tungsten and uranium as the best candidates.
A gold ball is straight out of James Bond
sorry what's the context?
Ironically, it's from either direct cell damage, or the cells killing themselves because they recognize potential genetic damage (see: apoptosis)
going down the rabbit hole of this: #the-water-cooler message
Sunburn is also apoptosis
oooh. Yeah, fascinating stuff. Once you get into the manhattan project you can be in the rabbit hole for weeks
In both cases, an experiment was intended to demonstrate how close the core was to criticality with a tamper, but the core was accidentally put into a critical configuration.
Yeah, because they were using a screwdriver instead of shims
The YouTube channel "Plainly Difficult" has covered a bunch of interesting criticality and radiation accidents
The size of the gap between the reflectors was changed by twisting the screwdriver
in-sane
Now if you really want to be depressed, read about the Goiânia accident
although, that's totally something that I could do in a home DIY project
David Charles Hahn (October 30, 1976 – September 27, 2016), sometimes called the "Radioactive Boy Scout" or the "Nuclear Boy Scout", was an American nuclear radiation enthusiast who built a homemade neutron source at the age of seventeen.
A scout in the Boy Scouts of America, Hahn conducted his experiments in secret in a backyard shed at his mot...

Always nice when the Ravioli is in the bonus
The abandonned radiotherapy unit
There was also that incident where those hunters found a canister to keep warm by overnight
Yeah. An abandonned soviet RTG
That was one of those old Soviet RTG generators they scattered thousands of around the country to give poor villages radio so they could hear propaganda
That said, I had to chuckle when a nearby radiation incident got compared to that in a paper I read last year.
Then cleaned up some of before giving up to spite the rest of the world
Copper thieves have died to them too
Because russia
Doesn't help that a bunch of them have polonium as the source
tl;dr contractor who should have known better tried to cut a component off the source in the hot cell, cut into source instead. Turns out they could have shipped it to its destination in the "stuck" configuration.

This is a lot of talking over still photos at the beginning (about said nuclear lighthouses), but has the actual footage of them retrieving that RTG source toward the end
Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators, or RTGs (sometimes incorrectly called Nuclear Batteries) are usually utilized in deep space exploration.
But during the 1970s and 1980s, during the height of The Cold War, The Soviet Union manufactured over 2500 terrestrial RTGs to power its unmanned Lighthouses and Radio Navigation Beacons on the Northe...
At face value it doesn't seem like the worst idea; permanent, low-maintenance power sources for putting shit in the middle of the frozen wilderness.
Leave it of course to the Soviets to half-arse it.
I like that it dispells the myth of the Simpson-style glowing green rod 🙂
It only glows with death....
Can put it on the shelf next to this?
YES
why does the the yellow and green have thier own channel but the skyconnect does not? also why am I seeing them in black on yt videos.. was there a revision?
there were some early ones made in black
Yellow and Green are HA platforms, while SkyConnect is "just" a Zigbee/Thread radio, and there are channels for that
yea but shouldn't it have it's own since it's "official"?
The conclusion of that video was weird. Russia and the international community were working together to clean up the "orphan RTGs", but when Russia invaded Crimea and was kicked out of the G8, they decided to show their displeasure by stopping the efforts to look for and dispose of the RTGs littered in their own territory
I mean, okay, godspeed with that strategy
very interesting video, though, thanks for posting!
🇷🇺Since we began exploring the former USSR we have discovered all kinds of wonderful examples of Soviet art and technology. However this time I went in search of the biggest prize of all…I just didn’t realise it would cause such a fuss as it did. Glory to the Soviet space engineers and cosmonauts! Glory to the Buran!
Check out the Instagram @la...
this video is also crazy
He's a really scummy guy
why?
There's strong evidence he's abused women and is a general creep
such as? Never seen it
I'm not sure I would use the word abuse but he's been accused of being a sex-tourist
And some of the content is in a similar vain. He's very entertaining though
He was also on trial for rape at one point in the UK and there have been stories of things like him driving women out to rural areas and refusing to take them home unless they do what he wants
Though I don't have an immediate source for that last part
There are some alleged forum posts by someone who seems quite familiar, but I don't think there's any hard evidence to really make a definite conclusion either way. Legally he's never been convicted of anything afaik, but it's worth knowing for people who watch the content imo. Myself included
nsfw https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldAndBaldrDossier/ There's a lot of stuff on there's that's pretty damning
I love to overkill
this is some mighty weird choice
why?
I'm sure it has something to do with material security, proliferation, and the potential for terrorists to obtain it to make a dirty bomb.
It seems like anyone whose territory is littered with material that's at risk for those things has a vested interest in monitoring and disposing of them safely, international community be damned
I think the Russian interest is in stoking stochastic events against their rivals.
It may not be telling the full story, but it sounds like Russia is willfully ignoring the issue because Dad (rest of the world) yelled at it
I like my messy, rat infested room!
mostly because of why a 4 year old 8 core out of the t line of a series that isnt known for its efficiency
I think I read a couple airport novels in the 1990s built on the fear of post-Soviet nuclear materials being lost and used in a terrorist event.
I think one is Fallout (Kevin J Anderson) and I guess not Soviet but Clancy's The Sum of All Fears
That's a great book. I loaned it to a coworker and never got it back
The opposite of the "one fruitcake" canon? 🤣
I saw it, it's not bad. Affleck taking over from Ford as Jack Ryan
I'm getting reminded of the poor choice of taking a date to see Paycheck in high school because nothing else on at the time interested me.
I'm sure I could have found a stupid rom-com to watch, would have been less retroactively embarrassing
you went to see paycheck in a theater? lol
very few movies these days are theater worthy
its a shame
What do you mean by that?
with how cheap cinemas have become, ya cant expect too much anymore
because most movies are borderline B rated (if you know what that means) and don't justify the cost of seeing in in a theater
I don't
A B movie, or B film, is a type of low-budget commercial motion picture. Originally, during the Golden Age of Hollywood, this term specifically referred to films meant to be shown as the lesser-known second half of a double feature, somewhat similar to B-sides in the world of recorded music. However, the production of such films as "second featu...
couldnt care less about the rating tbh
you should
some of the most entertaining movies I've seen were poorly rated by critics but had 80%+ on RT
nothing to do with critic rating
I've got a 1080 10-bit benq projector and working on the sound right now (I have a pair of "passive aggressive" Parts Express kits for front satellites, but no rears yet and a 12" Klipsch sub) so I have almost no reason to go.
Probably see Dune pt. 2 in the theater just because.
its an entertainment product, not something that belongs into art galleries
I think, despite how effective they are, the Passive Aggressives are too small for the room.
also I learned PTFE coated hookup wire isn't the best option for speaker building. If it touches anything it rattles.
seeing a movie in a theater is kind of like voting. considering most of the money a movie makes is from ticket sales. so "supporting" shit movies only yields more shit movies
hot glue all the things
what I think is funny is the PAs are so small they had to offset the passive radiators so the screws that hold tuning weights wouldn't hit each other on high excursion.
I used to have a set of klipsch Fortes II and a Klipsch sub. Was an awesome system.
The Sum of all Fears is the book that put me off reading any more of his books. I thought it was too long by a couple hundred pages. He stopped listening to his editor.
There are some B movies that work better on big screen. Not something to go see at first run prices in a chain cinema. More like something to see at the local independent cinema that has good burgers and tap selection.
you should watch more B movies in cinema. Less budget means more freedom to take risks, more opportunity to see undiscovered actors
B movies as in schlocky. Different than independent, which also may be lower budget. My local independent is good about screening those movies too.
B movie: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Not a B movie: The Grand Budapest Hotel.

2025 wtf lol
Give me VR and I'm in. I mean give me VR in mid-spec-PC and I might consider it
🤮
Nothing about that screams I should get it. Just not my jam
trailer dosen't show much in terms of actual game play
but knowing grand theft auto, it's gonna be awesome
Right, I'm just not feeling the aesthetic for whatever reason
too much diversity for ya?
I'm sure they'll nail the soundtrack and everything but I wish they would focus more on the looks and the VR part of it
Yeah that must totally be it
yea been hearing that more and more these days
It's based on the 1980s and obviously I'm more into the 1990s and 2000s nostalgia since I'm not quite as ancient as you
wtf where you pull that number from? certianly don't look 80's to me
some of those vehicles in the trailer are like 2020+
My ass tbh. You are right in that in that it seems to have somewhat a modern aesthetic, but it's also a Vice City game. Maybe I got it completely wrong
it takes place in south america
i dunno.. starting to lean back toward that diversity comment lol
Where is it mentioned that it's outside of the US?
That's 💯 Miami if I know anything about it - and I don't
You're right it's not the 1980s setting though as I thought at first
I guess it is florida. one thing I read said south america but after rewatching the trailer it's certianly florida lol
Well... it depends on your definition where the south begins
Somewhere around 60th parallel north at the minimum
That just might include atx so we might need to bump that number up
We as the south respectfully decline Atx, maybe the east wants him
I think he doesn't like the toilets in the south
I don't think he thinks toilets exist outside of Norway
2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series btw, might not be out on PC that year.
I'd say below 69° north
Thou areth correct
But I like me some jerk and beercans
It's just a bunch of hidden commands. https://blog.kember.net/posts/2008-04-reisub-the-gentle-linux-restart/

Yet not a raccoon dog
It does look like it

Alexa, ask MY ROUTER to disable the firewall
hahaha I have seen this as well
I love how the documentation also states that pausing the internet is ignoring alexa
Heyy
Anyone here experiment with Docker-ntp?
I'm using the defaults and it won't sync
How would that even work?
"Alexa, pause the internet"
"Ok"
"Alexa, resume the internet"
...
"Alexa?"
I have a button in HA to reboot my modem (via a zigbee smart socket)
why you reboot modem though
because the ISP provided box hangs up every once in a while
yuck
I think we had some issue on the docsis for a while? Haven't had to do that in 2 years now
I'm just lucky, my fiber fritzbox (yuck 2) provided by my isp is quite good and I never had to do such thing. And also my isp apparently has the same lease for >7 years now. I called them in the first year asking if it will change and the lady said "yes it should rotate". It never did. knocks on wood
cons: no ipv6 yet
I need to look into ipv6 again
I had IPv6 and GCNATed (SIT?) IPv4 when I used the modem as router
But setting it to bridge modem (purely modem) dropped to non-natted IPv4 and no IPv6
though the docs say it should do IPv6, so it must be a config issue
Well they have this described in their manual
It will pause it for every device except for Alexa connected
It's unbelievable that MS word still uses this dialog, like 35 years later...
Never touch a running system.
The people that usually work with those tools, dont like change.
Like Sloths.
At least they support some form of latex subset in the equation editor... can always find the right symbol that way.
IPv6 is fun. Painful to learn but easy to just have it work
It's awful. But you can render latex directly too
But I stopped using word a long time ago
Overleaf ftw
once you realize SLAAC is dumb and you want at most a subnet delegation from it, it's easy 😂
Yeah I have no clue how my IPv6 works
But it does just work, and I leave it sit there. I'll deal with it when I want to risk something breaking lol
does windows still list it as dhcp ?
🤷 I don't care what windows does
Get character map UWP from the MS store (free).
Do you think I'd use MS word on a computer I could install arbitrary stuff on?

that banner on desktop has been missing for quite awhile
It is inside it
Blah, this battery is designed as a flat rectangle with two metal pins sticking out, just waiting to short on anything metal.
But you can use your tongue to check its charging status
Hold my beer while I short two 18650's on my tongue
Smells burned here
It's legit a fire hazard until I get it fused
Until then just not keeping 18650's in it while it's not in use, heh
I imagine that the high-output 18650s intended for vaping and such would be spectacular
These are some Westinghouse 18650's I found on clearance at Walmart
I don't vape but my friend said they didn't fit his because his vapes need flat ends and these have bumps on the positive side
I just ran into that with the ESP32-S3-BOX-3 bases
I managed to cram a button-top variant in there, but haven't actually tried to use it yet
I didn't know it was a thing
I hit the opposite modding a Gameboy to take 14500's instead of AA's, I ordered ones without the bumps on them.
The two 18650's are for making a replacement battery for a Sega Nomad, heh
devices should be springy enough not to matter
The way the shell on the Gameboy Color is formed if the battery is completely flat it will hit a plastic edge before it touches the contact
It needs the bump to raise it past that lip

Requiring a slightly different battery to accommodate the hardware rather than the opposite just seems a weird choice for replaceable batteries
The problem is that the model number is the same
I just used a small piece of foil to bridge the gap until the correct batteries got in.
I probably could have modified the GBC shell to take a flat 14500 but I try to modify original console shells as little as possible.
As long as it can't learn from input and requires a super computer to train I don't think we have to worry about skynet
now we know why modren tv's come with cameras and microphones

Everything related to fonts and printing is kinda frozen in time.
And when Microsoft includes a modern alternative along-side the legacy version of something, people complain that functionality is duplicated (Control Panel / Settings App being a prime example).

Honestly, I'm kinda thankfull Microsoft has maintaned such stringent backwards compatability. The MSP I work for has a few print shops as clients, and we can run their ancient software and silk-screen printing machines on Windows 11 no problem.
Those same machines require PowerMac G3/G4 towers if you want to run the associated Apple software.
And nobody wants to maintain PowerPC Macs in a production environment in 2023 🤢
Not one, but two CPU architectures ago for Apple. Not that I'd be at all surprised to find something using a 68k Mac in that kind of industry either
I wanted to play one of the old Cyan Myst-derivative games that I had on CD and it was PowerPC-only. Luckily, it also included a Windows version and I could play it in a Windows VM running on my Intel Mac 🙂
They also re-released the original point-and-click version of Myst (and its sequels) with updated binaries for modern operating systems:
https://www.amazon.com/Myst-10th-Anniversary-DVD-PC-Mac/dp/B0000AFWWH?th=1
Myst / Riven / Exile with no weird compatability tricks required ^
did it look like crap on a non crt monitor?
Oh, yeah, the original releases still work, but require the installation of ancient versions of QuickTime and whatnot
The original Rosetta was retired by then
And in the case of Riven, playing from a single DVD is a much nicer experience than swapping CD-ROMs every time you ride a maglev train
looking forward to the remake
Is Riven finally getting a remake?
They've remade the first Myst so many times I've lost count
The most-recent VR edition was an interesting experience. lol
I just finished Obduction, bought Firmament
I still need to wrap up Obduction. Such a great game
I get super-absorbed in those games
And it's nice to see Cyan Worlds do something other than Myst
Pre-release interviews talked about how they had multiple meetings where they kept running out of steam because they couldn't come up with another compelling Myst sequel.
Then someone had a lightbulb moment and asked "what if we do a new IP?" and the meeting took off.
I feel like there's some "What has 4 legs and looks like a chair? A dog!" joke in there somewhere:
real question is, what moved to make it trigger in the first place
Raccoon jumped off it, probably
I disabled almost all the motion and object masks that I had in place when I moved to my latest Frigate+ model and am still tuning. It could have been a wind gust moving a nearby fern more than I expected
Obduction felt rushed to me. The storytelling wasn’t complete.
I loved the puzzle with the Russian thing, though. So satisfying when you finally realized.
It is always raccoons
except for you.. you know whatever caused the motion alert wasn't a racoon amirite
I can't tell you all my secrets
how will I own all the doormats if you can all think like me
The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) transforms discrete time-domain signals into the frequency domain. The most efficient way to compute the DFT is using a fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm.
This Tech Talk answers a few common questions that are often asked about the DFT and the FFT. It covers an overview of the algorithm where you’ll be...

Weren't Chia Pets a 90s thing?
2007 apparently
pet, sure
Got some big fat WAF with my latest automations. I tied my space heaters to home assistant and now it's seamless, a full on sort of bootleg zone heating system
My brother got me a wifi photo frame for Christmas and it's a gold mine of both yikes but also potential.
It uses an ESP chip for wifi and it runs Android. I ran an nmap on it and lo and behold, port 5555 (adb) is open. So I connected. And it worked.
Then I tried to get root access. Just running adb shell su was enough. No security, no privilege management, nothing.
There's gotta be something I can do with this but I'm not sure what. Maybe I could have HA upload photos to the album, turn it into a display, or something else.
This looks like something || you may put up your bum ||
I can't figure out what's going on in that video
the raccoon is walking through the frame on only its front paws?
There are a few of these in my family’s homes. Nothing much you can do for non-tech people who want to be able to keep adding photos by just sending via app or email.
In my case though, we have some of these where the photo selection is static, so I just load the 20-100 photo rotation on there locally and keep it offline.
and there's a lot of inches to Cartman's body. Just not vertical
He's just big boned
exactly
Or some invisible person using it like a wheelbarrow. That's what I'm going with
I mean, is this Raccons Got Talent?
The circus does raccoon auditions at night?
That is some exorcist shit lol
I watched a presentation someone gave about one of these wifi connected photo frames. Turns out it was being used as part of a VPN/proxy botnet. Proxy advertised that you'll get a brand new non VPN IP every time
And it was using the photo frames lol
Even I am flaberghasted
Candidate for Stupid Pet Tricks for sure
Probably the exact same model given this is a huge security flaw.
It's not like they have any other security flaws such as, say, not validating or sanitizing text inputs in fields such as album names or photo descriptions, allowing someone to upload code which would be executed by the frame.
People being afraid chatgpt turns into skynet
Meanwhile connected photoframes doing actual harm
The real question is what hardware does it have that it shouldn't? Probably isn't a camera, but maybe there's a microphone?
If you can put a file into a gallery and have it beamed remotely to the photo frame, aside from local network access what else are you getting as a bundle deal?
local network access

The contrast is pretty extreme on OLED. Have to compare to IPS later but it's very hard to read for me.
I think the Pixel6 I got is OLED? 🤔

I prefer it

Everybody was complaining about the update so I turned updates off for the discord app lol
I like OLED Black but I'm still on a discord app version from last year because I was annoyed when the Android app switched from a native Material app to React Native.
To me the only weird thing about OLED Black is that the pixel response time is a lot worse
I got an update for discord in may
With the new theme
Reverted back to the old theme and not willing to change lol
Because it is absolute black. Turned off oled pixels take a while to "start up"
I'm aware
hi all! is there anyone from Zurich/Switzerland here?
i do always feel kinda bad for ordering tools and supplements i know i wont use to a reasonable extend
what the hell am i supposed to do with a thousand pieces of heat shrink tubes
i need, like two
And that it probably would have cost more for fewer
pretty much
they will get added to the pile of <large amounts of> leds, capacitors, plugs and resistors
sadly they closed all the local tech stores where you could pick up small quantities of such stuff
just put them out for free on facebook marketplace, I am sure you'll find someone who needs them!
I used to be able to go to Radio Shack and buy a few overpriced resistors
Or Fry's
for all the excess i now have around, i could have bought the sensors instead of making them myself
We still have Jarcar in NZ / Australia, where you can still go and pay $1.80 for 10 resistors, but like you say sometimes that's all you want
seems like a fair price
Yeah I have no issue with it, because like you I usually don't want 1,000
The next generation is going to get a ton of forgotten crap
i remember them hand picking those kinda amounts from big boxes
Thanks, Amazon and AliExpress
somehow nobody makes good outdoor zigbee gear
I know I've crapped on about this a lot, but it is why I ended up with my (expensive, but I'd not say overpriced as such) LoRa gear.
Proper IP67 rated outdoor sensors and 5-10 year battery life. Very little not to like
i tried reading something into that but it seemd weird
probably very reasonable for sensors but very restrictive in how much you could possibly send
Oh yeah
You have to be... efficient... with the encoding. This is the hex version of the payload from one of mine: 01755c0367e50004686f077d0903 which contains temperature, humidity, co2 and battery level in 14 bytes
pretty cool
i think i stick with my basic pubsub esp stuff tho 🙂
no idea if those sensors will survive being submerged
In case you're wondering how that value works:
[0175][5c] = 92 (% battery)
[0367][e500] = 0xe5 = 229 (× 0.1°C = 22.9°C)
[0468][6f] = 111 (× 0.5% = 55.5% humidity)
[077d][0903] = 0x309 = 777 (ppm CO2)
how much did that unit cost you
Gateway was about $250 USD equivalent, the temperature/humidity/co2 sensor about $100.
Like I said, expensive but I don't consider overpriced considering the long-ass battery life (and cute e-ink display)
thaats a bit too expensive for my liking ^^
The outdoor one is cheaper too (no screen): https://www.milesight.com/iot/product/lorawan-sensor/em300-th
Yeah I totally get it. I just have more money than I do free time and motivation
if it works why not
Also check out this in awe at the size of this lad battery one of them has
That is a D size primary lithium battery rated for 19Ah @ 3.6V
Similar Wh rating to a lot of laptops
thats a lot
never knew they make lithium ones that size
especially not after they cheat on the 9v ones
Non rechargeable Lithium batteries have higher capacity.
That battery will go boom if put on a charger.
that sounds pretty wasteful
Which would be fun, because the electrolyte isn't flammable, but it is corrosive
Llithium is crazy flammable.
I haven't personally seen one and YouTube isn't giving any results but I've been told LiSOCL2 more detonates than ignites when recharged.
Even better
It also has twice the w/w lithium content of a Li-MnO2 3V battery, so that's fun
sounds like a handbag on a plane kind of thing
They can also go spicy from being discharged too much, you need to stop using them around 2v.
Lithium batteries are nuts.
The lithium grows tendrils under that voltage and they can physically stab through the dialectric and short to the other side.

Anyone here familiar with OpenWRT bridging?
no
@dawn moth I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
The OpenWRT forum might be the better place to ask
hotspots like to do client separation, so thats a problem

Weird question for the off-topic chat:
How would you do ventilation in a very well isolated energy efficient house?
HR+++ 3-layer glass panes, floor isolation, roof isolation, extra isolating layers on the walls, etc.
Obviously, I don't want to just pull cold air in, and it needs to be automated as much as possible, but in a loosely coupled kind of way
There are ventilation machines that extract heat from the outgoing air, but I would want to do that in a centralized place in the attic on the ventilation shaft, rather than put one in the living room and one in each office. Both because of cost and because of the noise that the decentralized ones add. But then I lose out on a possibility to automate and regulate per room, and although I do recover the heat, you still feel the cold air coming in through the regular ventilation holes
so supposedly there is a ventilation system in the house
Sort of. There is a ventilation shaft and it connects to the kitchen (the thing above the stove), toilet and bathroom. But none in the living room directly.
There is no active ventilation installed yet
So I am free to choose in that regard
We are going to replace the windows and basically the entire backside of the house, the outside of the living room
It's a concrete house from the 70s, the walls have been isolated already, the rest we're going to take care of in the first year we live there. We're moving in this spring
But for planning out the windows, the kind of glass and ventilation holes, we need to have a plan
from the people i know who have such air system, its mostly just centralized heating and then under floor distribution to each room with some valve type of thing to block it off
kinda similar to in floor heating
Thanks! We want to do floor heating too, that's the first thing we're going to get done there before we move in
i dont know how about the recovery on that works, but if thats left alone, i suppose this wouldnt be difficult to wire smartly into ha
So there should be no problem pulling cold air in, as long as you recover the heat on the outgoing air?
I'll still need to manually open and close the ventilation valves per room then I guess, unless there is some smart ESP32 design that will turn the knobs
i kinda feel this would be not a comfort issue due to centralized pre heating, but i could guess the outwards ventilation could be set to circulate instead of blow outside to some extend
but thats totally out of my knowledge
It's all very complicated, some people say that HR+++ glass does not make sense if you have a ventilation hole where cold air comes is
you could check the net for fitting smart valves if those units cant be bought with some already
That would be ideal, but the house does not have the required tubes for this. A per-room solution does work both ways, but is costly and creates noise
Thanks I'll do that!
You might want to contact an expert for that. With additional insulation and poor/wrong ventilation you could get a problem with mold.
Is it normal that some LEDs glow oven if I switched power off?
I now build a special smart plug for it

How did you turn power off?
Normal smart plugs/infrared plugs
Does the same happen, if you turn the powerplug by 180 degrees?
Never testet
Of course when I had a spare NVIDIA 1080TI laying around I had to try to run it with tdarr to transcode stuff. Its running in a thunderbolt case
Gotta get this going one day.
im suprised how painless it was to setup
Changed the ConnectX-3 to a ConnectX-4 when I was at it. running 30 degrees cooler
I think I have a few 1080s collecting dust. Next year 😆
I got about 5-600fps on transocoding 254 to 265 on this 1080. so much better than using the iGPU
looks like I can save 5-6TB on running the videos through it, so why not
That's amazing. Tired of adding drives. This would be the way to go.
If you look at the progression of the size of the heatsink on mellanox's 10/25Gb Ethernet cards, the 6 definitely ought to be a winner
yeah, the 3 got super warm at least
I put a fan over all my 3 sas cards and the mellanox and that drove down the temperature a lot just to get some extra airflow over them
the cards are very old now though, but I guess they do their job
yeah, they are getting small. the operation temp is not like 80 degrees like 3?
Im so happy putting a i9-9900T in the router. no more issues with speeds between vlans etc
Why do you need an i9 in a router?
More speed is more better
Threadripper it is then
Ripping all the network threads
192 should be enough
no way this is real
tasty
Seems like an easy way to break your neck if someone spills water on the bench
less hoarding more sending stuff to me
Looks terrifying
Put your feet off my... Oh, nevermind!
They've ignored me 💀
To my understanding the hotspot should just kinda expect all the traffic is coming from a single client 🤷
I doubt my Hotspot is gonna support the layer 2 protocols, surly the ISP thought of it
So I'm expecting my best bet is Relayd
no need for relayd if you handle your hotspot like a wan
Does dbrand already sell skins for them?
yeah since launch I think
also pretty sexy
nice

Does anyone know why Unifi Integration is replacing the ESPHome icons?
#general-archived
But likely because it also sees the device by tracking wifi clients
And then I think it's arbitrary which wins?
I just woke up, was thinking why is the HA bot asking me things, is it sentient
ok thank you
@next crag haha, excellent, thank you 🤣
wow, this Nanoleaf thread+matter bulbs must be the most buggy device I have bought in the last decade or so. Nothing really works well at all with the device or their app or apple home, not even trying with HA (as I read currentfirmware + HA is a no go)
I mean, cutting edge means you will bleed
I thought the QA people were the ones paid for the bleeding 😂
they outsourced it to customers
You have to pay QA, customers pay to test
And then there's HA users...
Looks like last year I had 2 spare smart plugs, I was setting xmas stuff and re-enabling the xmas automation I've noticed that I need 2 smart plugs XD I guess I'll need to order a couple of zigbee ones.

A tree

I think to remember that someone talked about some docker host os with no data persistence by default here
Anyone remember the name of that thing?
For some reason I think of nixos
But that's probably not it
There's https://www.talos.dev/ but it's more k8s geared than docker
I bit the bullet and enrolled to the beta just for fun, my bulb is updating to firmware 3.6.54 , went to the forum they point you to when enrolled in the beta to look for the release notes and there is no update to that subforum for years, except for some spam bot messages 😂
lmaooo
Ok, enough playing with this, back to the seller, this product is a joke, the bad google translation of the app is a joke, the forum is a joke...
Shame since the nanoleaf stuff I have used is great
Granted only used it in the apple homekit app, works great there
in my case it wasn´t working well even there, I only wanted a bulb that I could trigger a sunrise scene from an iOS automation, HA support is desired but not fundamental, and the scenes worked wrong from the Nanoleaf app and blocked the bulb when launched from the home app. I have a Wiz wifi+matter bulb here that works pretty well with both HA and iOS , gonna pick up another one that have that sunrise mode and try. Too bad it is not thread, I wanted to get rid of adding more devices to my wifi network, but...
nice heels @calm wind
since when is this a thing
I think since this year @red rock
But it only works, if @silent is at the beginning of the message
how do you do that? 🤔
literally how @iron granite describes it
it says @silent but it still notified me, weird
Nice!
guys, weird question, can I control power of a specific usb port on my pi that has HAOS running so I can power on and off something?
more context: I was playing soldering and assembled a 4x4x4 led cube, but I dont want it to run 24x7, and its usb powered. I could have an usb switch, but that would defeat the purpose, once all my lights are already being controlled by HAOS
Over the last week, I've been continuing my 3D printing journey by getting my Octoprint system up and running. I've also been integrating Octoprint with Home Assistant. One of the annoyances I encountered along the way is that the Ender 3 will accept power over the USB connection. This is useful for programming, but annoying in normal use. This ...
this should work
thanks, let me have a read
thanks I think that will do the trick, now the only concern and where I have to be very careful is to power off the correct USB, not the one that has my skyconnect 😉
I'm fairly certain that's an all or nothing thing on the RPi
You can either have them all powered or none powered
darn, than no. I needed to turn of a specific port, just so the led cube doesnt remain powered on all night
the link does mention each port beind addressed, so we might have a chance, just need to specify the correct one
unless hub-crtl.c goes all in
It also mentions he had to turn off every port for it to actually shut off.
the part that he does not address and where I think it my fail me is that he is not using that in his HAOS host, but in another pi.
I could probably do something like that had I had another PI where the USB ports were less important, but the current one holds my antenna as well
I'm pretty sure he's controlling an RPi dedicated to his 3D printer over wifi.
yeah, he does mention his PI count is up to 5, so I reckon its not gonna be his HAOS one
ok, back to the drawing board
The behavior is different between RPi 3 and RPi 4
RPi 3 has two groups of two ports that can be turned off, RPi 4 is all or nothing
for pi 4b you need a hub that supports it then
but apparently those hubs are quite rare
so, not the usb on the board itself
im not sure if turning off the power also disables communication. Probably not
but if it doesn't, they you could also externally power the stuff you want to keep alive
any dumb hub will do in that case
You could do something like put a relay or mosfet on the power line for that USB cable and control it from a gpio pin too
there is the option of having a smart plug on mains and a regular usb charger to juice up the cube, similar to what I have for christmas lights,
now that mosfet relay idea might be something to read on... im learing this tinkering pish (at a later age, I might add) but hey, why not
using GPIO to power the cube might be doable
GPIO cant supply power
You can't pull power directly from GPIO pins
hmmm
You might get like 50mA out of them, might be enough for a single dim LED
I was thinking:
rpi --> powered hub --> anything you want to keep connected (like zigbee)
rpi --> cube
Then turning off power will not affect the hub but your cube will turn off
hmmm, I see what you mean
kind of like when I turn off my pc my headset is still charging
or go with this if feeling too lazy?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Splenssy-Wireless-Flexible-Portable-Compatible/dp/B09ZXF7DK5/ref=sr_1_15?crid=SRDE6PEPU6B9&keywords=zigbee+smart+usb+plug&qid=1702483111&sprefix=zigbee+smart+usb+plug%2Caps%2C71&sr=8-15
Turn your USB devices on/off using a remote switch or a Raspberry Pi, Arduino and other devices! This module enables power to a USB device to be turned on/off via a USB power switch (MOSFET). Power goes IN via the micro-USB side and OUT via the USB-A side. The maximum current rating for the switch is 2.5A. The onboard
There is a 5v pin on the header with the GPIO pins but there's nothing special about it compared to the USB port 5v (except it's not switched at all). If the light doesn't need any data at all you could power a mosfet or relay from that 5v pin
But you can't power it from the GPIO pin itself
this one you could control via GPIO
I've done something like that before
now that might be something...
im willing to try that
imma order me up one or two of them
thank you
this works nicely with it
Congratulations?
Like, I'm going to a party on Friday
And me and a girl got the brilliant idea to go as Tinkerbell and captain hook
(theme is heroes and villains)
(I low key like her)
She's posting some pictures on bereal where she's creating a new Tinkerbell dress because she couldn't find a green dress
So I'm like, aaaaa
What do I get
I can hardly find anything that fits me and is like captain hook
And the party itself isn't that brilliant, as in, it's in a cellar in Utrecht
So I also don't want to put in too much effort
So I want to be the best Ali Express version of captain hook possible
Go as ICQ. A flower mask and a tshirt with the contacts list. And shouting "Oh ohhhhhh!"
And when she asks, why you aren't Hook, you can answer: "Because ICQ"
Play some music and when she asks say you're a music pirate
We already said we will be doing this
and she's already working on it
but now I found this cool hat
which looks like a pirateish hat
but now I still need a jacket
I actually have a Swedish navy coat here somewhere
