I do note that unlike the ubiquitous Ethernet Zigbee coordinators, it's not PoE either. That seems like a missed trick
How can I use SMS 2FA without a SIM card?
I got rid of my phone, but now I'm locked out of all my financial accounts
eSIM?
Of course, that assumes you can get your old number back, which is bloodly unlikely
You are, almost certainly, up shit creek without a canoe, never mind a paddle - unless you can get them to turn off 2FA on your accounts
That is a eerily precise description of that situation
I mean, turning off your cell service while having only SMS based 2FA for any accounts is bad planning. Doing that for your financial accounts takes that to a whole 'nother level.
For most of my accounts, I disconnected SMS 2FA from my phone via Google Voice. There are still some that don't work with it, though
SMS 2FA is just a bad idea for more than just that reason, though
Sadly it's also the only 2FA many backwards places offer
I think its a EU thing where you are obligated to have 2 different apps, one for banking and one for auth
Its so strict some of the banks here will not allow android for whatever reason beginning with december or something
Weird... not a problem here AFAIK
Hell, 99% of my banking is done on my Android π
I have not yet looked into it but they sent the info out
not allow android, wdym?
Can you post that? I have access to google's internal bug tracker and if there's a real issue, it might make sense to look into that
I'm surprised the EU doesn't have some law that apps like that need to be available on all mainstream platforms
I'd change banks if mine discontinued the Android app, heh
My bank only supports SMS 2FA, and you can't disable it once enabled. Lose access to your phone? Better hike your ass down to a branch office with ID...
Supposedly they'll also let you buy a $100 hardware token, but they don't make it easy.
Yubikey support? Nope...
At least mine supports their own app, SMS, and email
Their app just triggers an SMS -_-
I have chiptan which I can use at any point it would do 2FA
Or use the App
The banks here have a little card reader you can enter a code and your card pin into, which gives you another code to use for verification with - to prove you have the card (and pin)
Also infuriating is that the SMS message they send is one character too long for the notification toast, so you can read all but the last digit of the MFA code. Gotta expand the full notification shade to see the entire code.
My bank does SMS and e-mail. I'm sure they're not perfect but from what I could find Verizon was about the best cell provider I could get in regards to hijacking protections, before I was with Verizon I used Google Voice for all my 2FA SMS.
I have a CC through another bank and they'll let you do 2FA by tapping the NFC on the card to the phone
I have it disabled though because it kept opening the bank app whenever my phone was near the card
The mobile payment function in George for Android smartphones will expire on December 31, 2023 and will be terminated for the cards digitized there at the end of the year. It will therefore no longer be possible to pay with this function from 1.1.2024.
sounds like they are retiring their non-GPay payment app, not anything related to the banking app π€
George for Android is the banking app
It always a race for me to memorize the code when the notification pops up or type really fast :). I hate it when it comes as a big message and the code doesn't fit in the notification at all π
Do your guys's phones not give you a button to copy just the code on the toast notification?
We don't do sms 2fa here
don't think so. Though if it's for an app, the app usually requests access to scan for their 2FA and I never need to touch it
only things that do are 'murican apps π
Yea, people over here don't seem to really understand information security
If it comes through as a real SMS to the phone, yes. But not with my Google Voice strategy
SMS 2FA has been retired by my bank long time ago. I have the choice between app based 2FA or a physical TAN generator and bank card.
I wish places here supported alternate methods
At least TOTP should be mandated
A vocal minority over here seem to think that any system like that is the government trying to track them and should be banned and not trusted

why is there a finder icon showing in the apple event
i thought "scary fast" refers to a eventual M3, I'm confused
It used to be the logo of the Mac in general. I guess it's just their version of a jack-o-lantern
lel, I googled "jack-o-lantern" and there is a easter egg showing
I get a valid search + Google shenanigans
Is https://hacs.xyz/ down for anyone else?
Well the web server is responding, but is sending a 0-byte document

why does nanoleaf gotta be like this
only 3 devices make up that whole first row
I dont even know what the implications of having a device be this aggressive is
It could well be just an online check that it's doing
Which without network means it tries excessively often which wouldn't surprise me
it has network
its just being blocked
oh I think see what you are saying
apparently that domain doesnt even resolve to anything though
If you're trying on your own network then you'll be blocked by the same method the bulb is
no I did some google searches about it
oh my goodness there may be a new update for them that resolves this

cute
- first time buying a home; 48 year old furnace refuses to start on inspection before first winter
- get furnace replaced; costs most of your savings
- furnace includes wifi and touch screen thermostat; only model in its line that has cloud API only instead of cloud/local
suppose having heat is better than not π
- Cloud server goes offline; furnace no longer turns on; back to step 1
Except that point will probably be earlier than 48 years
So after ~3 years of using smart radiator valves, I still don't really feel it. It is great to have them automatically turn off at night or when you aren't home, but apart from that they don't perform well imo. They are unable to gradually open the valve as well as conventional TRVs and don't heat as evenly. They are loud and malfunction or turn off when the batteries are empty. I am actually thinking about switching back to conventional valves.
What are your opinions?
It would be great if there were a TRV that is a hybrid of both worlds. One that can regulate the temperature like conventional ones and is still remotely controllable.
Could you later change the thermostat? Or is it tied to the unit
I've only switched to them over the last winter
But already have the same feeling
Probably just not worth it
Yep, the technology is not mature. It ist just a way to make money. Some even sell you subscriptions etc.
I love how much cheaper network cables are at hardware stores compared to tech ones
The solenoid moving an analogue bimetal Thermostat would be way better
But I also question the utility just in general
It's just not worth setting the temps often
does anyone know of some nice animatronic toys that are available in the EU and which can be repurposed as voice assistants? I have seen the Hasbro animatronic baby yoda, but that's out of the question because of a single cam wheel (so he can't do individual gestures) https://youtu.be/Cz4vGkufVy8?t=735

luckily I can change the unit. however, I'm looking at this as a blessing in disguise. I get to help troubleshoot an under-tested integration for it in HACS.
Skip the Apple propaganda piece they just recently posted though, that was big cringe. Justifying the price of a 120$ Apple lightning cable by comparing it to a 3$ USB power cable
yeah that price is absolutely ridiculous
Yeah, he's been doing a bunch of sponsored stuff lately
He has endless material of him answering questions or building/fixing stuff in his cave that holds my interest and seems genuine
I found his podcast to be insufferable praise for random things and often descended into name dropping and historical film references that were lost on me, but that was years ago. Do YMMV with AS content
I've watched a lot of his videos on YT and those are quite enjoyable. Never tried his podcast
looks like they killed it back in Jan 2021:
Adam and Norm have an announcement to make--this will be the final episode of The Adam Savage Project. After 8 years of recording the podcast, we're refocusing our energies on other Tested projects including the bi-weekly livestreams. It's been a wonderful and amazing run--thanks so much for listening!
I always enjoy the "oh shit I bought another tool, better build a nice new cabinet for it and the other similar tools" videos.
Any AS drinking game has to have 'first order retrievability' on the board
The couple 3D printer reviews I watched of theirs seemed to be mostly fluff pieces too
Lots of listing features, little actual review
Prepared for candy duty
I haven't had any kids show up in the last three years so I didn't buy anything
Always ended up eating it all
i had 30-50 last year i think
That reminds me though, I need to kill my porch light automations
I ate most of mine already and contemplated buying more this morning, then decided that (simillarly), nobody comes down my long driveway anyway
I'm at the end of a cul-de-sac that's only accessible from a rather busy main road so nobody walks down here
Weird.
I guess it's more neighborhood to neighborhood
helicopter trick-or-treating? π¬
We had about a couple of hundred kids last year, this year for some reason it was about half that
Parents were always with their kids when I went trick or treating as a kid
We have a lot of sweets left π
Yeah, younger kids have parents/older siblings with them normally here
My brother and I used to fill up a wagon with candy and drag it from door to door and go for like 3 miles each Halloween, my parents came with us until I was 7 or 8.
I'm at work this night, so all candy at home for me
My neighbor used to always give out nickels and dimes for Halloween, we avoided her house.
We never celebrated capitalist holidays like Halloween when I was a kid but we did have https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virvonta where we would go bully the neighbors for candy. I don't remember anyone having parents with them
The virvonta or virpominen (meaning the act of refreshment, or of wishing) is performed by Finnish children on Palm Sunday to wish well to the households. In modern times, children dress as witches and knock at neighbours' doors while carrying salix tree branches (pussy willow), often decorated with colourful feathers. If accepted, they pronounce...
Calling Halloween a capitalist holiday seems weird to me.
Anything American would have been capitalist nonsense at the time. Just a joke
commercialized by Big Candy
Halloween is Gaelic in origins, not American.
The way the stuff has found itself here is through America, but I get that
somebody comes up with the holiday and Americans figure out how to make money from it
it's a gift
The Chinese are getting in on the act by creating "Singles day" out of wholecloth
The one thing I will say about American commercialism: we get a completely unnecessary set of "Black Friday" sales here in New Zealand.
Completely random and pointless, but if you need to buy something around that time of year it's nice to be able to buy it for less
For some time "Black Friday" has been a registered trademark here and noone else was allowed to use that name for sales. But they lost a lawsuit and the registration has been revoked.
wow paul hibbert roasted HA users lol
Again?
ah vid was 3 days ago.. so maybe not?
who?
LinknLink have just released a line of smart home products that includes an Alexa enabled presence sensor that only costs 16 quid!! See my discount below... Oh and it also works with Home Assistant ;)
This video is sponsored by LinknLink, all opinions are my own.
Presence sensors vs motion sensors is an easy one, motion sensors are waiting fo...
Unfortunately, same issue as baby Yoda: the animations are (beautifully) mechanical, so you can't control individual movements. More over, it has a beautifully engineered electro-mechanical registrator, which means you'd have to design an actual replacement PCB, which i think is too much of a hassle
I wish there was a word to express the joy I feel of having my network operating in perfect harmony
wish I could say the same about my zigbee network
There is, it's "temporary"
I mean the "roast" itself has some truth to it ngl, but then he goes on to shill for some random company which takes away all credibility
Why on Earth do these sensor pucks need an app? Just use WiFi/MQTT, Zigbee, Z-Wave, or any of the other standards that already exist. Yeesh...
Because it just works. (although it actually doesn't as he goes on to say in the rest of the video)
Honestly, at this point, the first thing I ask before any smart-home purchase is "Does it use Zigbee/Z-Wave?" and if it doesn't, then it's "can I flash it with ESPHome or Tasmota to make it not-stupid?"
π
But then you have to .yaml π¬
For Zigbee/Z-Wave/Tasmota? Where?
All that shit auto-discovers
Ask Paul I guess lol. ESPHome though
Yeah, I don't run any ESPHome devices, but the option is there π
Z-Wave is, hands down, the most no-nonsense and rock-solid standard I've used to date. Tasmota-flashed devices on WiFi are a close second. Zigbee is a distant third.
I haven't tried Z-Wave due to the prices but I've had issues with pretty much every type of product so far so I wouldn't say we're at a stage where I would recommend this stuff to everyone
I think we're maybe 95% there right now and zigbee has been fantastic for me
Zigbee is let down by the fact that it's 2.4 GHz. It'd work a lot better if it were on a different frequency.
That hasn't been an issue for me at all but it could be for some sure
Z-Wave runs on a much lower RF band, with much better wall penetration, coverage area, battery life, and update rate.
More reliable, and harder to jam
My entire Zigbee mesh would die every time my internet dropped because my Bond Bridge would enable its setup WiFi network and drown out all Zigbee coms. lol
Big F. But how often does your Internet connection drop?
a WAP suddenly appearing in the same closet at the Zigbee dongle was less than ideal
Comcast, so somewhat regularly. I have a backup 4G LTE modem now.
Yikes
Internet was out about 30 minutes last night, around 12:30 AM
It's like 1-2 times per decade here
Meanwhile my wifi connected google home devices keep hating on my OpenWRT router and drop off maybe once every other month for some reason which is super annoying
Literally using a WiFi smart plug instead of a Zigbee smart plug to auto-reset my modem in the event of an extended outage, because the Zigbee plug wasn't reliable enough.
I'd use a hard-wired ethernet smart plug if that were more of a thing, honestly.
clearly YMMV lol
If I had issues with WiFi I'd get a Z-Wave smart plug. They're pretty easy to find.
Anything that avoids 2.4 GHz seems to be a better bet, at least in my area.
90%+ of all products do that. They are designed for the general population that dosen't fiddle with stuff like HA or any kind of custom automation
In my experience, the general population hates the apps too
They wind up with 10 different apps and nothing works together
right but what other choice do they have? not like your average joe is going to learn HA
You can literally sync Zigbee devices directly to Echo smart speakers if you want, no app required
not going to see grandma writing python scripts etc etc lol
Pair and go, no muss to fuss
zigbee atleast so far through ZHA dosen't seem too reliable to me
The "smart hub that supports standards-compliant IOT devices" model works fine, and avoids most of the issues
granted some of that might be the skyconnect dongle as well but it's the point
I've been having issues with Hue bulbs on ZHA. I tried to transition mine over from a Hue hub, but the hub keeps trying to claim them back
The lights will periodically blink off, go unavaiable in HomeAssistant, then come back a few moments later. Stops if the Hue hub is unplugged.
going to be trying zigbee2mqtt soon. shame tho
Already tried that. Gave up and when back to ZHA.
lol awesome
"If this is what it takes to get Zigbee working, I'm replacing all my shit with Z-Wave"
Was basically how I felt 2 hours into trying to get Zigbee2mqtt to function properly
What would you recommend to your elder relatives right now Leapo? HA?
My parents are mostly just sticking to things that work directly with Alexa, and I try to guide them towards standards-compliant devices that support Zigbee, Z-Wave, or MQTT over WiFi.
I didn't want to have to maintain an HA instance for them, but I'd set it up if they wanted
But you're a certified nerd and they are not and that's my point. It's not quite self-sustaining right now
it's getting closer
Lutron's hardware is also solid as a rock, but it requires their own hub (which has a local API, thankfully)
They can handle adding a new smart plug via the Alexa app and whatnot. Really, they just need to be told which hardware to avoid.
The market being flooded with crap cloud-only devices is the biggest issue right now
not going to change very soon
matter is suppose to somewhat address the multiple app thing tho I thought
Why is that an issue? From the privacy or from the functionality point of view?
Not sure why I'd use Matter over Z-Wave, still. lol
price
zwave is retarded expensive
why I see less zwave stuff on shelves at big box stores
Functionality. It sucks having devices randomly not work because some server in China is down. Or worse, having a bunch of devices stop working because the company that was hosting the cloud service closed up shop.
That's why choosing standards compliant local-control devices is important.
If I use a Z-Wave smart plug, it's never going to just stop working due to forces beyond my control in another country.
actually many devices have a local api but it's just not always open
I have one chinese cloud based device I think installed with HA. It has never failed me. While I agree with the sentiment that local > cloud, I don't think it currently matters to most consumers
HomeKit was also supposed to solve that, yet here we are...
well in a sense it kind of has for apple lovers
Yeah, except for all the IoT hardware that doesn't support HomeKit because they want you to use their cloud
even apple seemed to have loosen thier grip a little to accomidate more stuff to work with it
Still waiting for my Abode gateway to support HomeKit
Currently it's still connected to HA through the cloud. I wouldn't have bought this alarm system is HomeKit weren't promised...
But Abode just can't seem to get the feature out the door.
abode is a rather small company in the grand scheme
Can't do any reliable automation between HA and my alarm system because it depends on the cloud. Sucks...
it's kind of like those chinese companies you were refering that can close up shop at any point
Yeah, but if it supported HomeKit I'd still have a connection to HomeAssistant even if they closed...
And it was supposed to support HomeKit
wll the only thing the rest of can do is vote with our wallets but while the majority still outnumbers us that don't care about cloud etc.. we will still have what we have
I've had issues maintaining connections to my Ecobee thermostat, Abode alarm system, and LitterRobot, all due to cloud-side issues.
Thankfully the Ecobee supports Homekit, though it took several emails back and forth with Ecobee support to actually get Homekit to connect.
And due to the limitations of HomeKit, I still have to keep it connected via HomeKit and the cloud, because not all functionality is available using HomeKit.
I hav not had too many issues with litterrobot
I have 3 of those plus monitoring a 4th at my moms
the remote monitoring part is nice
Mine disconnected from the cloud for 6 hours today. Didn't get an alert that the drawer was full. Cat decided the floor was a nice place to go...
ah
Literally a shitty situation π
well gotta least look at the thing once a day lol
Oof
I have an automation that has Alexa verbally notify me that the drawer is full or the litter is low, every hour on the hour, until I take care of it.
HA alerts drawer is full while there is atleast still 3 cycle left for it to do
But the LitterRobot needs to be connected to the cloud for it to work, which is... stupid...
Don't you get annoyed about the nagging?
Probably less annoyed than with turds on the carpet
connect an esp to the light output of the LR.. boom local notifications
You can go by the drawer-full status, or drawer-full percentage if you want to let it roll a bit longer before emptying it.
I'd rather Alexa nag me than have to clean cat shit out of the carpet (or worse, out of a roomba)
nah by default the machine alerts full with still 2 cycles before stopping. the LR3 was the same way
Roombas like to finger paint, doncha' know?
but in HA you get like 3 cycle I think when it triggers as full
For fun, the percentage is also just an estimate on the lr3, dunno about the 4 (seems like with its weight sensor it should be able to be a proper measurement). It's just guessing at 24 cycles to full so each is ~4.1% (except when it's nearly full)
Yeah, but you can ignore the dawer-full status and use drawer percentage instead.
why would anyone do that
Just wait for it to report 95% full, regardless of the status message
my 3 just keeps monotonically increasing until it reaches 99% and I manually reset it
Fewer trash bags used? π€·ββοΈ
that makes no sense unless there is something wrong with your machine
I'll clean it out, cycle/reset, and it still says it's 99% full
the drawer is always packed full when it alerts full
Mine works the same as yours, and trips the "drawer full" status well before the drawer is actually full-full
you need to recalibrate
I find that once it's "full" the first time from an empty bag (~4 days, for 2 cats), I can shake the drawer to flatten the contents and reset it, takes another 2.5-3 days to actually be full
Done that several times, it usuall reports "drawer full" status when the drawer 75% full
something is off then
And that's the LitterRobot app reporting both "Drawer full " and "Drawer 75%"
you not doing the recalibrate right
It knows the drawer isn't full, but reports full anyway π€·ββοΈ
my drawer is over flowing if I let the additional 2 cycles go when I get the alert of full drawer
I'd rather have my problem. lol
It starts complaining about a drawer-full condition well before the drawer is overflowing
just a little litter.. not like poop fall down lol
I'm running an LR4, dunno if that makes a difference
I can confirm the LR4 uses weight to detect how full the drawer is, because it will sometimes spontaniously trend downwards after sitting for a while (urine evaporating, making the drawer lighter)
weight and it also uses a sensor that pers down into the drawer when a cycle is at end point
the recalibrate os for that sensor
Kinda hoping someone figures out local control for the LR4. I'd even be willing to flash it with alternative firmware to get rid of the cloud component.
And I still think it's crazy that none of the LitterRobots have a built-in audible alarm.
If the damn thing could beep on its own, we'd miss a lot fewer alerts and errors.
ARCHLNX or NIXOS as a vanity plate?

need an army of smart home enthusiast lawyers to take that on
There was quite a lot of opinion in there
The big yellow headline makes a big statement with no backing
I thought the video would have some legal substance and left disappointed
It's what I would call clickbait
i awlays under the impression that reverse engineering was something protected
I do agree that successfully reverse engineering an API doesn't in any way imply theft of code or IP
it's no different from buying something, taking it apart to see how it works, and using it
I don't know if this API is local or goes through the cloud, but if the latter, it seems like more of a T&C issue
The video bit too much off-topic in my opinion. Too much "I may not be on Youtube for long anymore" and "Why I do what I do"
What is that all about? I don't know any of the history there
About how big companies bully unwanted stuff away and that he can't say everything freely on YT
It just wasn't clear to me whether the kind of diatribe in that video against Mazda was the catalyst for that and why it would jeopardize his videos. The clickbait headline followed by 'I'm not a lawyer and don't really know what I'm talking about' is poking the bear, but I don't know what could be done about it
That stuff is everywhere now

New in HA 2023.12.0: the "Hotdog" and "KΓΆttbullar" integrations
definitely "meatballs"
does that mean we go back to 100% yaml?
And specialized IKEA shelves for HA Blue, Yellow and Green
BLΓ
, GUL and GRΓN
You get HA in parts and you have to combine them (correctly) to run it
why do I have leftover screws?
Propably an add-on, but maybe it's screwed
Whenever I end up with unused parts I like to assume I simply found a more efficient way to assemble the product
so nothing changes then, got it
HemHjΓ€lparen?
We'll just get rid of this extra weight and....profit
Where we're going, we don't need roads wheels
Had a mysterious disappearing data earlier today,
Would call myself a newbie,
While migrating a HA install from a usb pendrive to a SSD,
OMV DB was corrupt, while HA was running off a USB pendrive perfectly, both on Lan and thru cloudflare.
I am unable to track HA backups now ππ
Someone experienced tried to help,
But with no backup or folder visible,
Will have to start a fresh.
Not much of rocket science, but fresh omv install wont let me have a working docker now.
As this is a off topic,
Hope I am not banned for this post π

It's crazy how much of my job is reading error messages back to the people who send them to me.
Well, did you <whatever clear instructions the error message provides>?
"No, I just clicked ok on the popup"
That's 99% of helping people here and on the forum.
The remainder (also in my work) is playing 20 questions with people.
Heaven forbid they give you all the information at once, expected to be a freaking mind reader
The other 1% is "Have your tried to turn it off and on again?"
So... also just like here then
There's a reason I quit volunteering to help in forums, heh. It's so tedious and repetitive. Same as being a mod, modding correctly is so tedious and frustrating and the second mods quit caring for even a moment everything goes to shit.
??
This
Someone WLEDed this lamp
As the IKEA StrΓ₯la looks just like the new Home Assistant logo, I had to enhance it with addressable LEDs
Running WLED on a Wemos D1 mini (ESP8266), fully integrated into Home Assistant
This is very ot, but would be be fine to do a function test on PC parts without a cpu cooler installed
no
Don't have to be well connected to it but you'll probably need something there so it won't overheat immediately
I want to see that IKEA lamp in the HA blue
By the way, five Nights at Freddy's movie is a really good one
It's amazing how well modern computers function with insufficient cooling, but none whatsoever might be a step too far.
We had a batch of servers at work with bad heatsinks (had a vapour chamber, which was corroding and leaking).
CPUs would be pegged at 96Β°C under even moderate load, but still worked (at about 1/3 the speed of a normal one).
Still got a few more C of wiggle room, no problem.
Anyone in the HA discord end up here b/c you left reddit after the API charge drama? Just curious where ya'll are at and how ya'll are doing.
never actively used reddit, i only googled "<problem> reddit" to get good solutions to problems
And get annoyed at all the deleted accounts and posts.
I am on reddit for the raccoon sub reddits, there are at least 3
i use discord and the facebook group.
facebook groups are fun dont use facebook for anything else
The HA Facebook group is good for HA unrelated videos π€£
my front porch light is now so much smarter
i already had an automation to gradually turn on the light to 50% at sunset
now, if it's during the day and i press the switch button it will just toggle the light from 0% to 100% like normal. if it's after the sun has set, though, it will toggle between 50% and 100%
in addition, if i long press the switch button it will open the garage door and set the light to 100%, then when i leave it will go back to 50%. when i get back it will get set back to 100% automatically until i unlock the front door then lock it again
and the location stuff only happens after sunset
Iβve told my wife the goal is whenever she presses a button in the house sheβll have absolutely no idea what will happen.
"self destruction countdown has started, press the correct button to abort"
this is your last chance to push the cancellation button
my whole philosophy has been to make it so that everything in the house works as it would in a "dumb home" both when home assistant is online or if it crashes
there's just additional functionality when everything is connected properly
hi guys i'm looking for a motion sensor with dimmer function , i would like to dim the lights more during the night or when it's dark
someone who can advice me maybe? i'm looking into the sonoff catalog
#hardware-archived can help with suggestions
Has anyone looked into managing a setup with multiple Android devices? I know automation with Ansible, Chef, Puppet, ... but is there something similar for Android? Like, setting up 9 Android devices with certain apps (including their configurations) etc?
(Looking to roll out 9 Sonoff NSPanel Pro in an identical way, with only a few variables that are unique per device)
I do the same. She still makes fun of me π€·ββοΈ
@last cedar
π¦
i just did the coolest home automation thing i've ever done
so i have a temperature sensor in every room
i also have a motion sensor in every room
until now i've been using an unweighted average of every temperature sensor as my thermostat temperature
i just worked it out so that now, it's a weighted average and the weight each temperature sensor gets is proportional to how much i'm actually in that room
for example i'm in my office 20%-25% of the week
so it gets 20%-25% weight
nice
This is life goals tbh π€£
That's how most houses here are set up
Unless they're like 2500+ sq ft
Save 300 bucks, loose hundreds in inefficient heating over the years
yeah, my house is only like 1200sqft and single story
most houses in america only have a single thermostat per floor
if even more than one
how exactly can i get zoned heating and cooling for only $300?
i'll jump on that in an instant
Well the manifold + valve combination costs about that much
oh well where i live i need cooling as well as heating
which is why i don't have radiators
but instead have forced air
That's kinda cool from what I've heard
Don't need to open windows to get the moisture down
the technology is pretty cool too, it's a heat pump so it's the exact same process to heat the house as it is to cool it
all you have to do to change the mode is reverse the flow through the exterior unit
Cooling the house while heating a pool...
that'd be nice if i had a pool lol
too expensive + i wouldn't use it often
if i ever build a house i want to do ground source heat pump for heating and cooling
if i'm feeling really fancy, ground source heat pump with a radiant floor heating loop, along with the usual hvac system for air conditioning and cooling
what's worse is when that redditor ends up being your past self
"who wrote this? it's amaz... oh."
A short minute of silence for the MyQ integration

Hard to feel sad or mournful when it was explicitly self-imposed by them
But painful for the users
It's basically enshittificaton with fewer steps.
Q: How do you sell a piece of hardware once, then finance running the cloud service forever?
A: Very clearly, you don't.
I'm not sure how they ever thought they were going to monetize it when OpenGarage and Ratgdo almost immediately replaced the built-in functionality
a mixture of vendor lockin, planned obsolescence and cloud dependence
Or the low-tech solution: Just use a dedicated RF remote instead of the app.
Even non-techies can avoid the online service and monetization.
I effectively built my own OpenGarage-like device before it was a thing you could just buy. ESP8266 flashed with Tasmota, with an ultrasonic range sensor to detect door state, occupancy/motion sensor, and a disassembled official RF remote paired to the garage door opener to handle opening and closing.
I suppose it also helps that devices like this existed prior to the advent of smart garage door openers, and work just as well as the built-in functionality (sometimes better).
Mine is LoRa, because a) I already used a bunch of LoRa stuff, and b) my garage is ~40 metres from the house, through the neighbour's entire house and a concrete retaining wall.
It also let me do some nice things like switching the lights on the roof of the garage on when the door opens (great for backing into the garage at night)
Wired into the door opener with good 'ol trusty Cat6 cable π
(also powered from the opener, which is nice)
Is this low-tech enough?
avoid Swift. got it.
Always link to the source: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/main/proposals/0004-remove-pre-post-inc-decrement.md
"Mr serviceman"
Clearly a product of a different time
for sure
the system has a key switch near the door (lost to time/previous owner) and a remote with similar DIPs (also lost)
part of me is actually considering keeping the box mounted for aesthetics but the whole opener needs to go. system is ca. 1978-82
Any suggestions on how to mount a tablet to the wall?
I think the heavy duty command stirps wiht velcro would probably be fine. I want to find something though that works like how the hooks attach to the wall. Where it like slots into place top down
Except I just want that without the hook part
My plan - when I finally get around to it - is to stick the tablet into a deep picture frame.
Get a mat board cut to the size of the display, and use double-sided tape to attach the tablet's bezel to the back of it.
Then just hang it on the wall like any other picture.
Even gives you some space behind it, should you want to hide cables
now, if the tablet happens to have wireless charging, you could also embed that into the frame back
I was thinking a PoE to USB-PD adapter, but that also works
saves the use over time on the port
Basically something like this, but minus the glass:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/635212156/new-black-shadow-box-deep-display-frame
Also figure it'd probably work out cheaper to get the frame/mat custom-made by a local picture framing company, avoiding paying for glass or anything else
reasoning
yeah. read the reasons. still stand by my comment. π
idk i have heard other bad things about swift and i never intend to use it
but still, at least removing ++x makes sense, if not x++
I come from C/C++ land. cold, dead hands.
With the exception of whatever horrible shit #5 would ever be hoping to achieve, that's all "introduction to programming" level stuff
And I'd say the ++x version would be more important to keep than the x++ version
I mean it does presume you're the kind of horrible person who likes a do {} while (--x > 0) type loop from time to time, but the pre-decrement version doesn't really have a replacement otherwise
my loops are typically --x because I'm a monster
Ouch
but I also know the whys
Just ended up going with this:
https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Adjustable-Degrees-Rotating-Reader/dp/B094TZQD34
Nice cuz it even rotates
actually not a bad idea
most overkill motion lights automation ever
me with my home assistant
i am 100% saving this to send to my coworkers lmfao
Looking at this makes me wonder if the automation editor could benefit from using a graph layout to make complex automations easier to read
pretty sure that was prototyped a while ago
this could honestly be made a lot neater if there was some kind of "wait for state" action that could start the timer at execution, instead of having to use a wait for trigger with a timeout and then an if statement afterwards
maybe not idk
my brain is a little fried from having made that lmao
that sounds like a wait_template
well the reason i used wait for trigger with a state condition is so i could do "motion has cleared for 2 minutes", so if it clears for 30 seconds and is detected again it will just wait until the next time it clears instead until it hits 2 minutes
it would just be nice if i could do some kind of "starting now" for that, so if motion is already cleared it just waits for two minutes from the point of execution instead of waiting for it to detect and then go cleared again
me finding new ways to overcomplicate a motion light automation
unfortunately the history_stats platform is kind of broken so i'll probably be reverting this change
It's a hero perpetual motion machine
GCP is kinda fun
I have now, after 25 years of dual monitors
I qualify, but different generations, and the older one restricts me to DisplayPort for 4k/60
Annoying
Slightly different spec versions
If I don't use exactly the set of connections and cables I'm using, it either doesn't work, or forces me to 30Hz or some nonsense
How do you keep the temperature in there, by the way? Do you have a mini-split or something?
Had you moved our last winter or will this one be the first?
@last cedar I see you were a star in Lidl's Christmas advert this year
A Magical Christmas with Lidl. Gift a toy to Lidlβs Toybank and share the magic.
ok so
i just setup a $5000 overkill wifi 6e setup for a guy a few weeks ago and just got a message saying the "internet isnt working very well". when i logged into the controller i found 91 devices added to the trusted wifi network (not the IoT network) and most of them are wifi 4 1x1 mimo shit like govee bulbs
I've been there since January I think
Also if you thought the other house was a steal
where is the secret raccoon stash
In the second apartment
Doormat wholesale peice is as volatile as human money, got to pay the bills somehow
Great advert tbh
If it didn't have the raccoon it would be too long though
This is amazing, I could legit not see the rest of my family for years, at 336m2
I am now just shouting from my chair that my code and setup works and its beautiful
it no longer is secret now huh π

That house is perfect though, 4 bedrooms, 2 offices, cellar for my racks, and the two apartments I can make enough to cover my loans with Airbnb if I just rent them 14 days per month
This is either some Norway math or lost in translation:
Well, municipal taxes
it's the "asset value" and "total price" parts that seem out of step
And the asset value is taxable value but your translation is interesting
Since we use , where you use .
it's worth x, but for you, it's x*5
So it's 6.5m and the taxable value for our irs is 1.3m
It has to do with I'm not sure the English word
But we have wealth, and we have loans
equity?
So if I have no loans and only that house I own items valued 1.3m
amortization?
But since I would have 6.5m in loans I end up -4.2m in wealth
Which is tax beneficial
I'm lost on what "wealth" means there
Wealth in Norwegian taxes is what you own, like houses / cars etc
clearly not appreciation
That gives you positive value
Which means you pay more tax
Loans give you negative wealth
Which is tax favorable
You always want more loans than you have assets
And houses are default tax asset value 25%
It's different from the US I know
The interest is deductible, but also the Value
Having no loans means you would pay more taxes
Because you have wealth
Which is why rich Norwegians move abroad, because if you own assets they have to pay tax
Like... Bezos would pay 50% tax here, for his entire fortune
"having" in the US doesn't usually mean much, only when you transact. Unless you count dividends
i suppose having to finance a pizza isnt counting towards deductions
that doesnt sound healthy
Since I have loans, but still probably am in the 10% of Norwegian income I pay around 32% tax
Kindergarten is deductible too even if it is highly subsidized
Buying books for school is deductible even if school is basically free
Having to drive to work is deductible if it is a certain distance
What's the distance
Over 50km from home to office
That's quite far
And it has to be more than 84 days a year I think too
If it is 50km each way
If it was 100km each way it would be 42 days
And then you start getting money back per km
If my math is correct
Anyone else see that mint is shutting down?
I've got literally 15 years worth of data in mint
What's mint
for a second i got spooked and thought linux mint
I've been looking for a replacement, but they've been shut out of several of my accounts for a while. It's kinda like MyQ that way
I tried Copilot Money and they're missing several accounts that I want. And some companies had special deals with Intuit, so others are shut out
I was actually looking to use the mintapi lib (scraper) to try to make a integration for HA. Right after I joined their discord the news broke. They've discussed a few good alternatives like YNAB, lunch money, and Monarch
We were also discussing using something like plaid directly, but it doesn't seem like plaid works well for personal use
Copilot Money uses Plaid for many of their integrations and most of the limitations that I found came from them
Mint shutting down has lit a fire under their competition, though
I just got used to Mint integrations breaking and I stopped relying on it to be accurate. It's taken forever for them + the financial institutions to figure out how to do 2FA with aggregators, and lots just won't play ball at all
Mint just tells you to disable 2FA when syncing and then reenable, but I can't even figure out how to do that with my account
For some obscure connections I had issues like comcast but my main providers worked pretty well
E*Trade, Empower, and my mortgage servicer all don't work anymore for me, and that makes it kinda useless. I just use it as an aggregator and ignore all the budgeting stuff
in any case, I hope someone can establish relationships with the financial institutions and build an equivalent or better solution
it would probably work better if you don't use 2FA anywhere
Something something local is best
Why that feeder can't store a local schedule who knows
The one I have does π€·ββοΈ
the one I use makes quite clear that it can do everything locally, and even has a battery backup in case the power goes out
I feel like I can hear that cat from here in the US
I mean alternatively apparently I could re-purpose it to dispense human treats?
https://www.sensibledefaults.io/blog/reverse-engineering-cat-feeder/index
After some late-night Amazon'ing I got a PetKit FreshElement Solo, which I turned into a positive reinforcement machine!
my cat feeder is one of these:
with a shelly 1 to make it smart
the schedule lives on the shelly 1 since it's flashed with ESPhome
You know it must be good, because they didn't waste any money on a fancy website π€£
an update:
https://blanknam3d-handbook.blogspot.com/2023/11/philips-wiz-tunable-white-smart.html
had a problem with smart bulbs that I previously had no trouble with just randomly dying when used in a certain room. spent the entire rest of my day figuring out why it happens & fixing just one bulb, then well into early morning throughout the night writing up about it + the internals of the Philips WiZ tunable white bulb
as for if my fix works long term? have yet to find out. but I'm happy to have just finally figured out exactly what's failing in them lol
Could you please post this sort of thing in #automations-archived . It is not off topic enough for here. Not enough trash pandas.
Something was off topic for off topic? π΅βπ«
this is how i shitpost online
@iron granite literally on with support right now asking for verification that they don't want any of my money - I will rip this opener out of my garage
Support rep doesn't even know what home assistant is
"I'm so very sorry, we are trained on our current partnerships, you can see them by tapping discover and then partners in the app"
Ratgdo is on back order π¦
Passkeys will gain traction, slowly
I'm switching to passkeys wherever I can,
I'm just annoyed the Bitwarden is only just starting to roll out passkey support
(and the first attempt for the browse plugin was a clusterfuck)
Good luck to you my human - hope install is easy
i just figured anything in support category was for support
not just sharing something
i just want any bank in the US to support yubikey authentication
there's no reason that the account i use to watch silly videos should be more secure than the account my paychecks go into and that my mortgage is on
the only thing financial institutions do right from a security standpoint is short sessions
Theyβll likely support passkey and leave the Yubikey integration to the OS layer. Iβve found itβs still pretty rocky between 1Password, native, and hardware.
i have no idea what you mean "to the OS layer"
webauthn is a pretty easy to implement 2fa standard which supports both security keys and passkeys
@finite atlas @iron granite @young sigil y'all awesome π¦
yubikey door lock when π
i spent way too much time going down that rabbit hole a while ago lol
it would technically be possible if you had some kind of mortise style lock and just put an NFC reader in the exterior wall by the doorbell or something
then just use a commercial style electric strike plate
run yubikey's webauthn over nfc thing on a raspberry pi or something
i ended up just getting a Level Bolt and adding it to home assistant as a homekit device tho
very reliable since my esp32 light switch directly next to the door can proxy the ble connection
sounds cool
huh
Need to give it more than 64 KB of RAM
Greedy supervisor nonsense
it happened when I saved a piece of yaml with a card type that didnt exist
switch yt with trashpandas and its accurate ^^
you sure?
They're just really good at it, so you don't hear about any crashes. Plane took off and landed without incident.. isn't news
isn't that a rabbit?
most
moist
Exactly, most moist raccoons can't fly a helicopter
if you are an asgardian indeed it is
I just now bought a atom lite on amazon and delivery is free in 9 hours, crazy.
Bummer to see Java falling and C# rising. Although by numbers C# is still fairly far behind
At least ruby is continuing to die off
I like the fact rust is growing
Erros
Never again Amazon! Not for cable π‘
Every meme needs a typo

@forest edge don't even think....π€£
Irony is the dogs name is Slippers..
Loved it.
Are there specific brands of solar panels and battery backup systems that play better with HA than others? I'm in the US and am collecting some quotes from suppliers but want to know if there are any brands I should avoid?
in theory you could buy whatever seems like it will pay off the fastest (<10 years) and add external power monitoring
#integrations-archived can probably better answer that though
lol, just gonna try all the channels!
personally i have a good time with hoymiles equipment, but they do funky communication stuff
not sure how good their bigger equipment is tho
Got to love waking up to find that your hass had a hiccup and forgot how to talk to supervisor -_-
all the other services running happily, nodered and such still ticking, dns working perfectly.... bounce the hass frontend and shbam all the automations start working sigh
time to figure out why it's probably not home assistant causing it lol
Resizing the disk/data partition for HAOS was refreshingly automated.
Wasn't expecting it to just do it on reboot
anyone tried this library?
omegle is no more
it's something that seems to happen when uptime of the pi gets to a few months, frontend has issues talking to supervisor till i power cycle
Didn't know it was still a thing
That sounds a lot like a pi problem not home assistant tho
Ive never had that kind of uptime cuz each haos update resets uptime I think
What are you using, then?
I use an old laptop because it was free and has a newer gen intel
Mini pcs are very popular these days as an alternative
If you search m910q here Iβve posted about them a lot
Pi 4 is fineeee for HA
Used a pi 3 for years
Only problem is the SD card
they're still a shitty solution
sure they are
Why
you spend more money buying a pi4+microSD (or ideally an SSD and usb to sata adapter) + power cable than you do on a more performant mini pc
you can search #hardware-archived i've had this discussion way too many times
True, but if you're like me you always have a pi laying around. The fact that a mini pc is better (I know) doesn't make a pi shit
How's the addon compatibility situation? Cuz i know a lot of the images are gonna be targeting the arm of the rpi4, would switching to a x86_64 architecture possibly lock me out of the addons i've been using?
a shitty solution comparably* then
no addons will work regardless of arm or x86 or whatever
you literally backup and restore and then reboot the host os and you've got everything you had on your underpowered SBC
pointing to end users who often dont know any better isnt really helpful lol
points to discord server
That's your 'shitty' opinion
Prob need to grow a brain
yeah you need to just walk away dude this isnt acceptable
from my pov, ya both are escalating with each other tbh
i'm not calling names, that is against the rules
differences in opinions and experiences are part of life
Lmao don't read too much into it, I don't care at all
you cared enough to feel the need to state that π
It's just sad to call a solution which 50% of the community uses 'shit'
a lotta words for not caring.
btu yeah that hardware you were mentioning defo looks a lot more powerful and affordable than rpi4 8GBs
it'd be nice to get something with more oomph
The thing is you don't need it
It's wasted on HA
HA will run on on your grandma's 1970's toaster
not for the tasks i'm wanting to use it for
Uh... a new Steam Deck version will be available next week. OLED π€
https://store.steampowered.com/sale/steamdeck_2023
oooooo nice
At least for the 512 GB and 1 TB version
ha choked out on my rpi3 cuz i was trying to use nodered and esphome on it simultanously, esp when it came time to update the firmware for the devices i built
I ran that for years, never had issues
That was literally my setup for 4 years until I got a nas
Good for you!
Might have had a PSU issue or something
Fun fact, other people's needs and experiences can differ from yours! Just because you didn't have a problem doesn't mean other people won't!
Probably can't upgrade mine, I think oled needs different hardware
Yet I also ran node red and esphome
Pi 3b
If you're going to respond like this why even tell me haha
And then you used that experience to be dismissive of other people's limitations! Yaaay!
They happily upgrade yours - for the full price. And you can keep the old one
Because in order to communicate, humans do a thing called "giving context to their experiences", where they provide information on the environment that caused a frustration!
People are being dismissive of the pi for no good reasons. Pi is awesome
I think the green has even less flops than the pi 4
Got a green at my place now
Nas at the parents
ayo that's pretty awesome customer service
Not sure it would do that for oled only. The bigger battery is very nice
Looks like they're gonna be working with ifixit to make repairability easier again
i'm sure it won't be long before that hardware gets tested to see if someone could do a inplace upgrade if the parts are Compatible Enough
I used ifixit to buy/replace the ssd on my steamdeck. Also used their tools when I replaced the battery, ram and ssd on my laptop. Great company
if we could magically upgrade the older decks to the new battery, that would be pretty cool
but i suppose that wont fit
Not sure. If it's a chemistry upgrade it may fit
Some people will be crazy enough to make a disassembly YT video soon
I've been looking at replacing the backplate with something good looking
Replacing the whole shell might be too much
Also started running emudeck
Gotta watch that though. See the debacle of the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds, they changed from a 3.6V to a 3.85V battery (supposedly due to supply issues), but then sent out a firmware update that started charging all of them to that voltage. Killed the battery in everyone's that had the older batteries, and they've had to replace by the looks thousands of sets of them.

I was excited for a second, but it looks like they haven't fixed my primary complaint about the original display: No VRR support.
Variable Refresh Rate should be standard on this thing, given its middling performance.
I was really hoping they'd match the screen on the Asus ROG Ally
hmm yeah that would have been nice
FSR3.0 compensates a lot of the low FPS issues I have
Isn't that only in 2 games?
Also, frame generation tends to work best when your framerate is already above 60.
It's great for people who own high refresh rate monitors, who can maintain 60+, but struggle to keep their 120+ Hz monitor maxed out. Turn on framegen and away you go.
That isn't really the case for most modern titles on the Steam Deck. They'd be better off with VRR so the refresh rate matches the framerate (reduced latency, reduced judder, no tearing, etc.)
Literally only 2 games have FSR 3.0... it has to be built into the engine
for example in hogwarts legacy it gets me from ~30 to ~60 fps
sorry I meant FSR 2.0/3.0
3.0 is too new
FSR 2.0 doesn't do frame generation, only upscaling, and it doesn't work well with resolutions below 1440p in my experience
The Steam Deck is already only 800p. Upscaling from even less than that isn't gonna be great
tbh, im not sure exactly what it does. All I can say is it looks great and I get 60 fps
do you have a steam deck?
FSR 2.0 renders the game at a lower internal resolution and then uses intelligent upscaling to blow the low-resolution image up to your monitor's native resolution
But the lower your native resolution is, the lower that internal resolution gets, and things get muddy real quick...
Not yet. The ROG Ally seems like a better buy at the moment, anyway.
windows 11 on a handheld... dear god please no
And I've used FSR 2.0 in a number of titles on my desktop
Yeah, Windows 8.1 would have had a better UI for it
Though if you're just launching directly into Steam Big Picture mode, like the SteamDeck does, then it doesn't really matter if it's Windows under the hood
You can run more games thanks to it being Windows, though. I will say that...
my laptop is ROG. Armory crate UI is so bad it makes me cry
My desktop runs an Asus motherboard. I just didn't bother installing Armory Crate. lol
it looks like somebody took a gamer design from the 80's and upscaled it
Everything can be controlled through the BIOS and preferred 3rd party apps anyway
is that true though? with proton being as good as it is atm
Yeah, there are a number of games the SteamDeck still can't launch unless you install Windows on it
Or they're missing options because Proton doesn't fully emulate later DirectX versions
It's... frustrating
The original Crysis insta-crashes if you try to run it in SteamOS. The Remastered version runs, but it's even heavier than the original, and won't run properly on lowest settings. lol
price wise, the cheapest ally I can find is about 760 euro. I got my steamdeck for 300. That's a significant difference
Boot to WIndows, fire up the original release of Crysis, runs fine.
The prices are a lot closer in the US, with the ROG Ally starting at $599 and the equivalent SteamDeck being $549
There's a cheaper Steam Deck at $399, but it has half the storage of the Ally and loses the OLED screen.
where did you find an ally for 600?
$50 isn't much of a difference when comparing entire computers, imho
Both the Asus store and BestBuy have it for $599
The "Extreme" edition is only $20 more at $619
weird, thats at 800 eur for me
US prices vs EU prices can be wonky
I think the steamdeck can get more out of hardware, simply because it runs linux and not windows
That hasn't really been the case so far. It's pretty much a wash in most games, with a few favoring one over the other (or straight-up just not launching on SteamOS)
SteamOS generally works well, Windows also generally works well
Windows has a pretty efficient pipeline for 3D graphics, as well it should, considering the Xbox runs a variant of it.
im not comparing it to the ally, just the fact that linux allows you to modify everything up to the lowest level driver and windows doesn't gives linux an advantage
especially because valve worked together with AMD on the low level drivers for linux
Eh? The graphics drivers are closed source on both Windows and Linux
There's an open-source driver for AMD GPUs for Linux, but it's incredibly slow compared to the closed-source driver from AMD
which was developed with valve
The closed-source AMD driver for Linux predates all Valve hardware by decades...
not for the steamdeck hardware, it was developed by valve and AMD together
specifically for linux
What are you claiming was developed by them together, exactly?
Because the closed-source AMD driver that the Steam Deck runs is the same one you'd run with any RDNA GPU
It's not steam deck specific
it is
its a huge selling point in fact
what's ROG going to do? they're always going to be limited by what windows offers
Again, it's not all that custom. it's a Zen2 CPU with an RDNA2 GPU.
Totally off-the-shelf designs for AMD
You can literally install SteamOS on the Ally...
It also runs an AMD APU. lol
The Ally's APU is about 50% faster than the Steam Deck's
so? it ships windows
And?
it runs fine with Windows, but you can put SteamOS on it if you think it's so much better
so thats what's supported and developed
Just like you can throw Windows on a Steam Deck to run games that won't run under Proton
im going to run whatever they are developing
Ok, well that leaves the Ally with a wider selection of games it'll run than the Steam deck, and it runs them faster. I'm not seeing the downside here >_>
I'm not saying the Steam Deck is bad, I'm just not sure it's the best buy out of the two
clearly in the EU it is, because the price difference is insane
I mean, I'd probably pay the price difference for the better screen.
but I would never buy the ally because it runs windows 11
120Hz 1080p with VRR is a real nice upgrade over 90Hz 800p without VRR
I really want linux gaming to grow (and linux in general)
I think steamdeck is a great way to support that
And the CPU and GPU are both faster, so that's good too
True, but I don't even have the option of 1080p on the Steam Deck
The Ally can run 800p all day if you want, with VRR, and at 120Hz
You also get the option of using FSR to upscale 800p to 1080p, which is gonna look better than upscaling 560p to 800p
And again, don't get me wrong, it'd be neat to see a $50 cheaper ROG Ally with SteamOS preloaded. I'm sure that'd sell well too.
As far as Valve hardware goes, I'm more excited to see what their next VR headset is gonna be. I've got a Valve Index, and it could really use the addition of eye tracking and a wireless connection.
im sure it looks better. Im just not sure it's really necessary on a screen that small
Well, if you think that, then turn the resolution down and enjoy the higher framerate and better battery life.
The Ally just gives you more options than the Steam Deck π€·ββοΈ
It also is significantly more expensive
They entry for 700 bucks vs 350ish
I mean the steamdeck has a higher DPI than my 4k monitor. It's pretty insane how good that looks on such a small screen
I was comparing like-for-like. The cheap Steam Deck loses the OLED screen and has half the storage...
That's a major downgrade
There is no better performance of the more expensive one
As close to like-for-like as I could get. All Steam Decks have the same performance
I bought the cheapest 64GB refurbished and put a 1TB SSD in it
And I'd want the ROG Ally explicitly because I like the sreen a LOT better than the Deck's screen
I think I got the best deal
So comparing to a Deck with an even worse screen made little sense to me
but have you seen it in IRL?
I know what a 60Hz LCD without VRR looks like. lol
It struggles with text on games that don't like non 16:9 aspect ratios
But that's more on the game than the deck
btw, I just noticed valve has also reduced the price of all the base models as well
very nice
It's a pretty sensible upgrade if they figure out low brightness modes
Most importantly it's not disappearing in the ditch for software support
I worry about that, honestly. Valve seems to be better these days, but there's a trail of old/discontinued hardware in their wake
The original Steam Machines, the Steam Controller, the Steam Link. All dead.
Steam Link got updates till the end of 21
They generally still work (aside from the original Steam Machines), but good luck getting replacement parts if anything breaks.
Similar to the controller, those things sold by weight at the end
Valve has a habit of just throwing products at the wall to see what sticks
It was the bulkiest controller I've ever held in my hands
Hold an original Xbox "Duke" controller. lol
I managed to sell my steam con it rather recently
No idea why anyone would want one
Apparently Microsoft thought the North American market would prefer a larger controller, assuming the market would (on average) have larger hands.
The Duke was very quicky discontinued in favor the "S" controller
Very sensible decision
I think Microsoft also misjudged the number of children vs. adults that would be playing on the console
They just were ahead of the times
They kinda were. The original Xbox is a weird thing as far as 6th gen consoles go
It's in the same generation of console as the Dreamcast, PS2, and Gamecube, but it's the only one to have built-in networking, built-in mass storage, and a full online service.
it's basically a prototype for the 7th generation of consoles.
there was also a recent (last 5 years) re-release of the Duke (because nostalgia sells) that replaces the center orb with a LCD that shows the OG boot screen
Sad me who didn't were around to have fun with that stuff
modded ours a few months ago to mess around with that resurrection of the original Xbox Live called Insignia
can it play them directly from isos?
I put in a new hdd last year, changed to sata
I like my Steam Controller, I was particularly happy with the release of Steam Deck because it brought more attention to Steam Input, with them maintaining it and more devs implementing support for it properly. Like some games just can't take a mouse input and a stick input at once but steam deck makes more devs implement it.
Hi Boys
what about the girls?
No girls allowed here, this is a boys and raccoons zone.
@last cedar do you agree?
Well, being both a girl, and a raccoon, I am still trying to process
I might need to go on grape binge
Am I allowed because I am a raccoon though?
Of course there is a GIF of a raccoon eating a grape
Argh, I'm too slow
Cleanup friday
