i was hunting addressable for a while. then i thought. id rather have CW and WW in the same package. its a kitchen. not a dance party

I have some of those but keep in mind that they have only 30 led/m for CCT

that worried me as well

tested your 30 under a diffuser? if so how did it look?

orchid rose

30 just won't look good imo. 60 is okay if it's indirect and 144 if it's under a diffuser. Sadly you'll have to make a compromise somewhere

Took me until 4AM a few nights ago to track down the issues I was facing being related to IPv6

Thankfully the Nabu Casa integration was also broken, and the Nabu Casa wiki mentioned checking IPv6

But yeah, little annoyed that not a single error message thrown by HomeAssistant mentioned the protocol being used...

Lots of unhelful "unknown error" and "connection timeout" messages.

Oooh, I have a good one for that.
Boss of my last job (small company, maybe 60 people) was keeping about $10,000 of wine in our server room.
About 3-4mo after I left, aircon failed and cooked it all (corks popped, ruined).
He was mad, and enquired as to the envionmental monitoring.
Unfortunately, because - aside from the wine - he was a massive cheapskate, the monitoring equipment was mine (bought and paid for), and I'd taken it with me.
My ex-colleagues took some delight in telling me that story.

Very off-topic. I have a network question. I discovered a device on my network (Unifi running off a UDR) that shouldn't be there. It was a powerline device, connected to my wifi.

glacial knot
#

that's not a question yet

midnight musk
#

smartass 😄

#

I've now blocked it, but obviously somehow they must have had my wifi password right? Or at least somehow got onto the network.

#

Can I find out how this happened, or maybe even where this device is?

#

And obviously I'm changing my wifi password for that SSID to avoid a future login.

swift fossil
#

I think the UDR stores when the clients connected that could be one data point to go of from

#

Also I am not sure how a powerline device can be on your wifi I was under the impression those require a wired connection

midnight musk
#

Yeah I can see the date and time it started, it's 2am on some day in July !!

#

Yeah, it seems this was a router that connected to wifi, and then routed the data into the powerline

#

AVM Powerline 1000e

swift fossil
#

Does it show any other information it logged? Maybe the loss?

midnight musk
#

But I do also realise it can be another device that's being mis-identified by my UDR

#

The loss?

swift fossil
#

Loss can help you physically locate the device or atleast give you a rough idea of where it is

swift fossil
midnight musk
#

Ah gotcha

swift fossil
#

Yeah and its powerline so it shouldn’t be 5G but if it was on the 5G network then that should also give you an idea that the device is likely not far off

midnight musk
#

I can't see (or don't know how) which band it was connected to. I'm wondering whether I'm going to find out down the line one of my iot things are now no longer working because it was just misidentified. Maybe I should be better at naming my devices when I add them. EIther way good lesson

swift fossil
#

Yeah lol

#

What I like to do is when I add devices on my network I add the mac address in a static dhcp lease so firstly it gets a static ip and secondly I can track the device

#

Plus since it has a static address I can do stuff like give it a dns name or have per device firewall rules

midnight musk
#

Yeah, I need to start making my network more structured, and eventually more secure. Just watched some nice YT videos about it (by The Hook Up) since I'm not really knowledgeable enough myself.

#

Will follow his structure and advice.

#

It's better to have a structure early on now I only have 35 devices, once I have more it gets harder and harder to do of course.

swift fossil
#

Yeah if you are doing mac address stuff but really if you know your networking even that can be pretty easy. Just switch off non iot devices and get the list of all connected clients through either the router, the AP or another network inspection tool

midnight musk
#

Well well well... So it's my amazon Echo that has decided to identify as a powerline adapter.

dusky plank

Powerline adapters can do very weird things to your network,

I just shut off the power to a bunch of circuits to install some Zigbee fan switches and when the one attached to my whole house fan briefly turned on and then died, I flipped that breaker on and off a few times while I was trying to diagnose the wiring. It turns out that it's simply not intended for the amperage of that fan (the new Inovelli Blue fan switch only supports 2.5a (!)), but the constant power cycling caused the filesystem in my pfSense router to corrupt and I spent another 30mins getting it into single user mode from the console and running a filesystem check. At least it was able to recover without reinstalling...

#

I don't know why pfSense doesn't run a filesystem check/fix whenever it boots

there are lots of identical instructions for "when it blows up, do this!", but it could just as easily do it on its own if it can't successfully boot

Suport Chatbots are cancer

prisma briar
#

The level of support to provide is frustrating. In my experience most people who contact support are just being lazy and wanting someone do things for them that they should be doing themselves, so the vast majority of money spent on support is a waste, but then if there's no support the ocassional person who actually needs it is screwed.

#

I get using chatbots to try to weed out the lazy people

#

On the flipside screw dealing with that as a customer.

dusky plank
#

stupid people... ts ts ts

primal laurel
#

unfortunately some things cant be done without some kind of support

#

and some people cant do anything without support

prisma briar
#

If people need that constant level of support then they need to be paying more for it, imo.

#

I don't want some demanding incompetent person's support charges rolled into the price I pay for things

#

Support is expensive

#

And having it be free everywhere has led to people being dependent and lazy

#

Legitimate support requests are fine, but seriously like 80%+ of the contacts I took in support were just people being lazy

primal laurel
#

depends how you look at it. I work at a company which has a reputation for providing very good support. A lot of focus is put on high net promotor scores. The logic is good support means higher scores means more customers

prisma briar
#

The route we took was that for certain tasks we'll provide the customer all the info on how to do it but not actually do it for them to try to avoid that ever being an option to them

#

Some of our cheaper plans are less than $10/mo and we'd have people on those plans calling in 5 times a day asking us for help with tools we didn't even sell or support, or to restore backups and reset database permissions and whatnot. We also had an annoying number of people try to use us as recurring free therapy to whine about their lives to.

#

Having to tell a customer that we're going to drop him if he doesn't quit calling us whining about his girlfriend's dislike of his financial situation is an annoying conversation to have

and for the life of me, i could not figure out how or why the sensor was detecting "presence" when I know the room is absolutely empty

#

my home office is directly above my garage, and as it turns out when the garage door opens/closes it's setting off the sensor because it's so sensistive. The little bit of vibrations in the walls.

primal laurel
#

and so they reflect back to receiver through the wall

#

very 'smart' mmwave receivers use some kind of object detection AI to figure out if the reflected object was a human or something else

#

especially in automotive

brazen fable
#

It was cheap and I'm just using it for basic light automation

primal laurel
#

yep

brazen fable
#

screek from ebay

#

looks like it'll do the job i want it to do

#

which is keep the lights on when people are in the room

#

lol

#

i use motion sensors to actuall flip them on so the false positives wont be an issue

#

i haven't toyed with the sensitivity settings yet either

primal laurel
#

the one that's in the google hub can detect your heartrate through your blanket hehe

brazen fable
#

wot

primal laurel
#

and breathing rate

brazen fable
#

allegeldy this thing can detect breathing/falls

primal laurel
#

and whether you're sleeping or not

brazen fable
#

but i haven't dove deep into it

#

for $25 though I'm impressed

#

hate that it has to use wifi though

#

and I know there are zigbee ones from aqara but I view zigbee as almost as bad as wifi

#

i highly prefer zwave these days

#

2.4ghz super crowded by me

primal laurel
#

when you first set up zigbee you need to check which channel has the least amount of wifi interference

#

that solved all my connectivity issues

#

after that it's golden

brazen fable
#

I know how that works

#

Trust me, there is no clean spectrum here

#

not in the 2.4gh band

#

even 5ghz is crowded

dusky plank
#

my cheap mmwave sometimes detects me moving in my bed which is practically a different room. its only seeing reflections through the door to the bedroom on the adjacent wall

#

had to dial it way down to -x meters

brazen fable
#

i compared the timestamps from HA to my security camera feed and it's definitely picking up the door

#

but likely to be a non issue because its not going up in that room anyway

primal laurel
#

you don't need clean spectrum. Just 'sufficiently noise free' spectrum

brazen fable
#

There isn't any.

#

Lol

#

Part of that is my own doing too. I mean zigbee still works but I prefer not to add to the problem

#

zwave is just better/more reliable

#

I've probably got around 200 of my own devices eating 2.4ghz

primal laurel
#

meh, I doubt it's so bad it cant work at all

#

zwave is so expensive

#

not worth it IMO

brazen fable
#

a little more expensive, sure, but it works better and i have to replace it less often

#

I just had to replace 2 more zigbee outlets because they crapped out

#

for $5 more i get zwave 800 ones with future LR, faster response times, and it's just a higher quality product

primal laurel
#

I doubt that had anything to do with it being zigbee

#

crappy products are crappy products

#

zigbee is very cheap to implement as a manufacturer, while zwave is very expensive to build for

#

thats why there is such a large difference in price for common devices

brazen fable
#

Yeah because they hold zwave to a minimum standard to get the tag lol

#

that and the chip monopoly

primal laurel
#

but it also means many chinese manufacturers (tuya...) produce only zigbee

#

which tends to be crap

brazen fable
#

also a lot of the issues I suspect were from the sonoff adapter. I switched over to the skyconnect and it got a lot better

primal laurel
brazen fable
#

because my hue bulbs all work really well 99% of the time

#

im also fairly impressed though with the innoveli zwave color bulbs

#

going to pick up a couple more of those for outdoors to serve as outdoor "antenna"

#

they've been super reliable

#

Plus I love that with HA I can use any kind of wallmote to control anything lol. Like in my main office I just used a spare lutron pico and tied it to my innoveli bulbs hahahah

The frequency Z-Wave is using has the advantage of going through basically everything.
Our house is particularly horrible for RF, because the walls are solid timber (no cavity, just 44mm of solid pine), 5GHz signal is basically unusable after 2 walls, and 2.4GHz almost goes through 3 (and that's with my Ruckus APs, the Ubiquiti ones didn't do nearly that well).
I use a lot of LoRa stuff (which like Z-Wave is 900MHz). The gateway is mounted under the house, and I have stuff in my detached garage (about 40m from the house and quite a way uphill) which has to go through 1) floor 2) outside wall of the house 3) concrete retaining wall 4) our neighbour's entire house 5) another concrete retaining wall 6) outside wall of garage 7) floor of the garage. Still works perfectly.

#

I was wondering about how well Zigbee is going to cope with that. Seen people reporting signal issues going through one plasterboard cavity wall, not sure how much fun it's going to be

primal laurel
#

Zigbee uses repeaters

#

It's a mesh protocol

#

So as long as you have enough bulbs or switches or whatever is close enough there's no problem

ocean oar
#

Well that is the thing; might require outfitting a lot of rooms all at once to get enough nodes in the mesh

primal laurel
#

Just the ones that need coverage. One bulb is enough

#

If you go zigbee you want everything zigbee

#

So no wifi or zwave

glacial knot
#

don't put "smart" things on 802.11 just in general

#

dumb idea

#

they might go to the internet directly 🤢

#

not sure if 802.3 is better though

primal laurel
glacial knot
#

a, b, g, N, ac, ax...
You know, 802.11
Zigbee is (similar to? I think) 802.15
I guess zwave doesn't have IEEE standards 🤔

primal laurel
#

I mean, anything besides wifi

glacial knot
#

😕 I'm not sure what you are saying

primal laurel
#

You say 802.11, that's just WiFi right?

glacial knot
#

technically, since WiFi is a trademark
But most non-deeply techy people I know use wifi for stuff like zigbee as well, so I like using the IEEE standards family as it ensures some familiarity with the pedantry

umbral cliff
glacial knot
#

yea, my main issue is the shitty wifi AP that doesn't do VLANs 😦

brazen fable
brazen fable
#

although to be fair, and full disclosure, I run 2 zwave and 2 zigbee networks

ocean oar

brazen fable
#

Seems expensive for no apparent gain

#

lol

#

and only a 700 series radio to boot

ocean oar
#

Apparent gain is my server rack is a solid steel box, putting USB-attached RF equipment inside is basically a non-starter
