It any any way or scripts to analyze an ES CPU to see if it support what it supposed to support? I know some early editions might miss lanes, and are clocked lower etc, but the late ES versions are like RC candidates and are equal to the final product. But I would guess it would be a script that you can run to check whats there or not?

late gate
#

I relised how much CPU power (at least cores) it needs to actually handle firewall, vlan and IDS passthrough. forget 10G with a CPU you get on aliexpress fanless "routers"

#

machine to machine is no problem, but when the router is involced its more of a hazzle

#

unless opnsense is horrible bad at routing

#

The Netgear I bought some weeks ago I already sold

#

Netgate

#

and using opnsense again now. I could not stand the UI on pfsense from 1998 (not that opnsense is pretty in any way)

#

also switched from nextdns to controld cause the opnsense service is much, much faster and confirgurable

hollow glacier
#

Cloudflare says why

late gate
#

why to what?

hollow glacier
#

why use nextdns and whatever controld is

#

instead of CF and quad9

late gate
#

nextdns and crontrold is two very good ad blocking services

#

they work extremely well vs adguard

#

ofc you should setup it a bit, like pushing all local tld like local, lan, home.arpa etc directly to unbound

#

it will also cache locally, so you get no dns delay in lookup, but it is very good at removing ads and other threats

#

you can also fake your country

#

pr page and service

hollow glacier
#

oh you're not talking about upstream dns you just dont run adguard or pihole?

#

gross

late gate
#

I use it as a regular external DNS with the perks it block (of course you have full control what yo block), but you should reroute local dns to a local dns

#

doesnt have to, but I see no need to have any external lookup for my local services

#

I see no problem using those over 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1

#

only difference is that on those two services you can control the lookup

#

wil full support of dnsec etc

hollow glacier
dusky plank
#

Um, that totally sounds like my setup with adguard and unbound

#

Nothing special, works really well. Local dns is all resolved by unbound

clear ferry
#

Still haven't seen it built in, then again most modern laptops don't have a network jack built in

ocean oar
#

I keep telling the likes of network vendors I deal with to help me out on that point. Switches need a serial connection of some description, and more and more are making that a USB port.
Why not make it a USB-C, add a few bucks to the BOM for a PD controller (when the hardware sells for ≥$20k, what's a few dollars more?), and use those ridiculously over-specced PSUs for something useful.
If I'm stuck there in the datacentre sitting next to it, should at least be charging my laptop for me.

Imagine having UPS. What's the point when the grid never goes down

static schooner

I find them annoying. I never need them because the power doesn't go out, so I just need to replace the battery when it dies. And I usually find out the battery is dead when I need to turn off the circuit breaker to install a switch

What really pisses me off is places that try to charge "disposal fees" for dead lead-acid batteries, which they're immediately going to turn around and sell for scrap.
The scrap price isn't that high ($0.80/kg here, and a 9Ah UPS battery is about 2.5kg so only $2 each), but if you're not being paid to dispose of them, someone is double-dipping.

young sigil
# finite atlas Just get a UPS for your whole house. With a variable electricity price you might...

Nope. Did the math using two years of energy data saved with home assistant and influxdb. I checked a number of systems and sizes. Best case I'd pay a battery system off after 20 years. It is only guaranteed for 10. Biggest problem is how far southI live. I have plenty of excess solar in summer but bugger all in winter, and that's when my energy use is highest. The UPS function would be handy though.

ocean oar

Also your power company might decide they don't like it anymore. They want to charge you what they charge you, not let you do your own time-of-day load shifting and pay as little as possible.

Supposedly the market for whale meat has gone way down, Norway being one of like 3 countries who still hunt them

#

There was a recent Freakonomics episode on it

#

One of the hunters was going off on some story about how killing whales is good because they eat other fish that they want. Seemed like nonsense

I don't think I've ever been anywhere where whale or seal was an option to eat.

We eat quite a bit of grouse in Norway

#

It's interesting

#

Usually birds are called white meat, but grouse is almost as red as whale

low harness

So is ostrich

clear ferry
#

I've never had that either

#

Swedes have it in the freezer of the super market though

low harness
#

Ostrich farms used to be the hot thing around the -00s. Good stuff, but I haven't had it in 15+ years

clear ferry

I've had croc and snake though

#

Eel is interesting too, if done right

Smoked eel is a Chrismtas dinner staple around here. But breaded is nice too. My wife accidentally caught one when fishing in the stream next to our property once.

State of California - Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General

OAKLAND — California Attorney General Rob Bonta today issued a statement in response to Senate Bill 478 (SB 478), a bill that he sponsored, being signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. Coauthored by Senator Bill Dodd (D-Napa) and Senator Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), the legislation will prohibit hidden fees (also called ‘junk fees’) in Califor...

#

now do this but in every single country and state please lol

clear ferry
#

Pretty sure that is illegal in most countries already

#

Good that the US is following along

static schooner

California, that is, which often leads on such things

shy comet
#

california has enough sway to influence teh world, good example is in 2018 the state mandated all cars sold in it need a backup camera...low and behold every single manufacturer followed suit

shy comet
#

basically your bill is the item you ordered plus tax and thats it, nothing else

I think there used to be "California" models, mainly for emissions, but it's easier/cheaper not to bother

shy comet
#

now all we need is gas prices to come down and these pesky mosquittos to go away

the heat wave this weekend seemed to have brought a new swarm in 😦

I actually paid >$7/gallon for a couple of gallons to tide me over until I got to Costco, where I paid $6.xxx

#

it's insane

#

I remember paying $0.74/gallon one time when I was in college (early 90s)

shy comet
#

it was $2/gal shortly after 9/11 and that was considered very high at the time lol
