Would overlaying coverage of a wifi network either with more aps of the same/a different network help to keep speeds up / latency low?

#

It may be my imagination but running 60ish devices on a mesh seems like it's a bit slower to load websites than before

clear ferry
#

if you are running mixed mode (2.4 \ 5ghz) on the same ssid that will usually also slow down stuff

#

when I tried that on my tp link mesh it gave me 70Mbps with mixed, and 550Mbps with only 5g

solar zealot

Currently I run all my wifi smort devices over the guest network on the same aps

prisma briar

#

Wireless meshing is generally crap in my experience.

#

UniFi's wireless meshing caused all kinds of weird problems for me when I tried it, WDS on OpenWRT was a pita to configure and never quite stable for me.

#

My dad has a TP-Link mesh with a mixed network though and other than him needing to physically power cycle APs once a month or so it works fine.

clear ferry
#

Yeah no issues with mine ever

#

Except the mixed mode stuff

prisma briar

finite atlas
#

wired 802.11r ftw

prisma briar
#

I use Unifi's fast roaming, which I think is 802.11v?

#

I looked into all that at one point

prisma briar
#

I'm pretty sure having mixed AC and 5GHz AX clients will affect AX client max speed, but AC should still give 200-300Mbps.

clear ferry
#

Might just be my clients that are funky when I did the testing

hearty rock
#

@solar zealot it's been my experience that too many APs is just as bad as not enough APs, because they talk over each other and lots of radio interference even if you have them on different channels. I've had a couple sites I've improved performance by pulling a couple APs

if your APs can't support enough simultaneous devices without bogging down, then it's time to maybe consider switching to Ubiquiti UniFi

#

also I set up an IDIoT network for all the gadgets, that network can't talk back to the main network, but the main network can initiate communication to IDIoT devices

#

also when you mesh APs, I mean connect them wirelessly instead of over a cable, you lose a big hunk of performance for every hop you get away from the wire.

#

performance - network throughput

solar zealot
#

Currently the setup is 3 aps, two of which are connected by cables. They should support "up to 100 devices", whatever that means. More capable ones from the deco line do a bit more but not by a whole lot

#

Id suspect that dropping more money into it may not give me the funky results

#

Even tho the guest network with the smort devices is 2.4ghz only for compatibility reasons while the other also has 5 enabled

#

Sadly there isn't really any debug stuff provided from those aps to figure out what's up

prisma briar
#

I have about 65 wifi devices, I've ran them off of two unifi APs before but I have four now.

hearty rock

prisma briar
#

Ah. My dog was overweight when I got her but she got down to a healthy weight pretty quickly and hasn't really ever deviated.

#

I think part of that was because she had an undiagnosed injury when I got her so she wasn't very active.

#

She had a blown disc in her spine, the vet thought she got hit by a car at some point. I had to keep her crated for 6 weeks after I got her to let it heal.

#

Didn't know until we came home after a walk and she couldn't make it up the two steps on my porch by herself.

forest edge
#

not sure if I should be using statistics senor to show just mean data or if that would ultimately smooth out more important fluctuations

#

the time the cats like to keep their front feet on the entry way while doing their buisness causes dips which I think a statitics sensor would eliminate if I understand how those work correctly

static schooner
#

I just added a state_class to start LTS

forest edge
#

I had created one statitics sensor for one cat to see how it would go. the original template sensor I have has a state class for it. both show diffrent pounds up to almost a pound diffrence

#

the statics shows a mean off a 24 hr period

#

like the cats last actual reading was 13.26 and the statics sensor currently shows 14.07. I am not 100% comfortable with that diffrence

#

vet says a cat losing so much as half a pound within 7 days is a little concerning

#

so those changes can mean a lot

is it anyone that use nordigen/gocardless bank API here that cant get new bank accounts out of it?

pale chasm
#

What strategies are there to handle storing IOT data offline and automatically uploading it when there is connectivity?

#

My use case: I'm looking to put HA on a Raspi w/cell modem in my RV. I plan to use it to track various things (location, solar & batteries, climate). I'd also like to upload the data to a server (cloud based or at home) for viewing when I'm not in the RV.
I have all the tooling to ingest information from the various sensors and I'd originally planned on brokering that to HA via MQTT since that's a good fit. I realized that there may be times where I wont be able to get cell coverage. In these cases, I'd like to store the results and upload them later when I do get coverage. MQTT is not meant to store-and-foreward.

#

This seems like a common problem for remote data gathering in the IOT world, but I'm not finding much in the way of solutions that arent super hacky or some proprietary system.

forest edge
#

using a python script you could write new values to like a txt and then read from that txt when it comes time to send an mqtt

#

there is no easy means within HA to store and send ondemand in that regard. you would have to just screate a script that does all of that and simply just use HA as the information source/sender etc

pale chasm
#

I'm fine with going around HA as far as the store and forward part. I just didnt know if there was something built-in I could leverage.

forest edge
#

not in the manor you would like.

pale chasm
#

Someone suggested storing the info in an RRD, but as far as I know, that doesnt have any built-in store and foreward functionality.

#

It would just be a marginally better option that a text file ๐Ÿ™‚

distant junco
#

I haven't used it but maybe litestream or things similar to it could be what you're looking for?

pale chasm
#

Hmmm... Could be. I'd not heard of that before. I'll have to check it out. Seems like the connection recovery bit is just a side benefit rather than key functionality, so I'm not sure how robust it is. One way to find out!

distant junco
#

You basically want some kind of replication or (two-way) diff/merge tool for the database I presume.

pale chasm
#

Yeah... Though it would only need to be one-way. No information needs to be synced back to the RV.

forest edge
#

you wanting back log for theft situations? like gps coords?

pale chasm
#

And to see the state of the battery and solar. I have a Renogy system which has a decent data output showing usage, charging, etc.

#

That was actually my main goal, but it turns out most of the cell modems come with GPS, so that was a bonus ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

how often is this RV out of cell range?

pale chasm
#

depends... The modems arent that good - could be hours, could be days. I figure I wouldnt need to sample more often than every 5 or 10 minutes. Maybe I could even have it sample every 30 minutes unless moving, then scale back to 5 or something like that.

#

The sensors are all read via Python APIs

forest edge
#

relying on those solar panels keeping that battery up

pale chasm
#

yes... I can shut down the modem entirely when it's not transmitting

#

So then it'd just be the draw of the Pi... I might even be able to get away with a Pi zero - there's not much heavy processing going on.

#

HA could be shut down when I'm not present

forest edge
#

ha on a zero is not fun, if that's what you are refering to

pale chasm
#

Ah.. Maybe that lives on a different box.

#

I'd have to play with how HA interacts with the databases... I could just run an MQTT host on the zero and the ingestor and store-and-forward mechanism. HA could be on a different box, when I'm actually present, it'd start and read from the external MQTT database.

#

Not sure... I've got the hardware, but the architecture is still in the design phase ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

I have an rpi in a barn with ha that I communicate via cell with. but the barn dosen't move so loss of cell coverage is not an issue lol

pale chasm
#

I'd like to think the 200w solar panels and dual 12v batteries would keep even a Pi4 with a cell modem easily running indefinitely. Even in the Pacific Northwest ๐Ÿ™‚

forest edge
#

yea I would imagine. but you don't need a 4 for what your doing

#

if your pulling data already without using ha, you could probably do it all from a zero

pale chasm
#

Ya... But I'm still back to the 'how to store and forward'. I'll mess with litestream. I dont have a ton of SQLite experience, I guess now's as good a time to learn. I also need to find a way to minimize SD card writes. Maybe a USB thumb drive. Or keep the DB in memory and flush it to disk daily.

forest edge
#

thumbdrive is no better than sdcard

#

my barn has a samsung endurance card in it, handled all the extreme temps thrown out it so far from over 100F to near 0f so far

If you don't have a lot of equal size drives, do zfs

If not, do unraid

You can't add single drives later to zfs

upper apex
#

im the worst with that

glacial knot
upper apex
glacial knot
#

nope. Not single drives

upper apex
#

super weakkkkk

glacial knot
#

you can add new vdevs, but you want more than a single drive in the vdev

upper apex
#

I was hearing something about vdevs

#

what is that?

clear ferry
#

Zfs is not for people with "some drives" and less than 64GB ram

#

A vdev is a grouping of disks, in a pool

#

3-10 of them and if your first vdev is 5 disks your next needs to be too

upper apex
clear ferry
#

Add five drives, then if you want to expand you'll add five more

#

Adding 10 you need to add 10 more to expand

upper apex
#

Why just never add one at a time then?

clear ferry
#

Then you have no data protection

#

First drive failure all drive data is lost

upper apex
#

Hmm..

#

what if im not worried about the data

clear ferry
#

Then, sure, but it makes no sense with zfs

upper apex
#

Its realatively easily replaceable

#

just a lot of downloading ๐Ÿ˜‰

clear ferry
#

Zfs is not for your usecase

#

Unraid is

upper apex
#

So ZFS is essentially Raid 1?

clear ferry
#

No

upper apex
#

Mirrors the data?

clear ferry
#

It has things similar to raid, but no

#

You add multiples of drives, that are each their own "raid" group

#

That go in the same pool

#

If one of those raid groups fail, data is gone

upper apex
#

giving you one path correct?

clear ferry
#

One pool, yes

#

As does unraid

upper apex
#

and yeah data is split up between all drives so if one goes everything goes

#

hmm

#

so if I needed 44TB of storage, and wanted ZFS.. I would have to buy two more drives?

#

or only 22TB of ZFS with what I have now.. ๐Ÿ˜•

clear ferry
#

Three drives in a raidz1 will give you 2x drive capacity

#

And if you want to expand in the future you need to add 3x22 drives

glacial knot
#

if it's data that's easy but annoying to get again just use btrfs ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

clear ferry
#

Don't use btrfs for anything but mirrors

upper apex
#

Its plex data.. put it that way

#

lol

clear ferry
#

My zfs pool is 20x8TB drives

upper apex
#

so would be annoying to re-find 44tb of data

#

but wouldnt be the end of the world

#

so your suggesting unraid

clear ferry
#

For your usecase yes

#

How much memory do you have?

upper apex
#

72gb on the main machine

clear ferry
#

That'll suffice for zfs, but still for expansion unraid is better

upper apex
#

so I understand unraid runs baremetal.. That same machine has my video card in it I need for transcoding.

#

should I virtualize unraid?

clear ferry
#

Unraid runs docker containers and vms

#

Don't virtualize unraid

upper apex
#

ahh so unraid is similar to truenas were you can add other containers?

clear ferry
#

Yes

#

But unraid has proper docker

upper apex
#

an you add portainer on it?

clear ferry
#

Truenas has a botched Kubernetes thing

upper apex
#

or does unraid have a descent GUI or working with the dockers?

clear ferry
#

Don't use portainer, and unraid has gui container management

upper apex
#

alright frick truenas then

#

and last question i think

#

can I pass through a GPU in docker for a plex server?

#

I know i can with proxmox and truenas

clear ferry
#

Yes

upper apex
#

and we talking acutal docker docker

clear ferry
#

Yes

upper apex
#

or unraids own version of containers

clear ferry
#

No

upper apex
#

alright so lots of support

clear ferry
#

It's just a frontend

upper apex
#

hmm

dusky plank
#

hmmmmmm

upper apex
#

so 100% you suggest installing unraid baremetal

clear ferry
#

For your usecase yes

upper apex

clear ferry
glacial knot
upper apex
clear ferry
#

Yeah, I don't use any of these, no idea, I manage my stuff myself

upper apex
#

ahh ok

glacial knot
#

oh, you mean with unraid? I don't think they have that

upper apex
#

aight

#

with docker..via portainer, right now I spin up a container per app

#

does it make more sense to spin up one container and add mutiple apps to the same container?

#

that makes sense?

glacial knot
#

no

upper apex
#

not even sure what they are running, some version of linux?

#

but each spin up of that opperating system is using a little bit of resources

glacial knot
#

containers are incredibly light on the OS. You'll spend more resources on some kind of process manager in the container than spinning up another container

upper apex
#

haha alright

glacial knot
#

and you just run the chance of some odd bugs with some cobbled together not really process management

upper apex
#

Plex needs to be able to run at full capacity... wonder if it will run poorly via docker

#

running it on windows atm.

glacial knot
#

gaming on the other hand.....consoles are going to meet a sudden stop once the masses see what VR gaming is all about

forest edge
#

i wouldn't be so sure. you see how dependent we've come to delivered goods and how lazy our work force is.

#

putting the final nail in movie theaters and other forms of entertainment that generally got people to leave thier homes is right around the corner. coupled with working from home etc etc

#

I could easy see most of our pop living most thier lives in VR lol

glacial knot
#

Mobile AR (Pokemon go, but no clunky phone) might be the actual game changer

shy comet
#

not to say i like movie theaters charging more but im thankful we have assigned seating now and no longer need to wait in massive lines and can get food brought to your seat

shy comet
forest edge
#

your optimism is frightning lol

shy comet
#

nothing like being able to peak around a corner or duck and point your arm etc...

shy comet
forest edge
#

it's all activities that get people out of thier homes, is mainly what I want pointing at

#

we have discussion in this server already about how little we see kids play outside.. it all kind of falls in line with where we are already moving towards

shy comet
forest edge
#

is it? or maybe inflation just killed off the little percentage still holding on

shy comet
#

gaming is a sport now

#

wasnt one in the 80s

#

kids are now running off starting businesses lol

forest edge
#

we kind of did with some esports. now instead of being a select few anyone can make gaming a career lol

#

making money while playing games has been a thing since pacman etc

shy comet
#

cnat hate man....most parents now a days would rather their kids play video games than stare at YouTube

forest edge
#

I don't see much of a diffrence there

#

the only benifit games have is it's not some asshat around same age doing something illegal

shy comet
#

one allows kids to exercise logic and reason the other they just stare at with a blank face

#

strategizing and communicating is also essential life skills

forest edge
#

have you been to a fast food joint lately? they develop that blank face regardless lmao

shy comet
forest edge
#

i am not as optimistic as you. If I was younger I would probably legitimately fear what may happen in 20-30 years from now lol

tidal bronze
#

You will deprive him of his primary source of news.

forest edge

speaking of citizens from a state that has gone stagnant

tidal bronze
#

One-day when you get on that greyhound and come down here

forest edge
#

I can eat at the very exact same place we have here? oh exciting!

forest edge
#

it's like in and out.. but diffrent..

tidal bronze
#

Exactly, it will never be In N Out

forest edge
#

the added sand in my burger is what gives it that exotic taste

orchid rose
#

those are some cheap burgers, gimme

forest edge
#

you don't want it. the beef is old and the sand is plentiful

orchid rose

but I kinda do

I really wish the shelly stuff was more available in and for the US. those products have been bar none the best I have ever had in terms of smart home stuff

steel crag

there's lots of stuff outside misery

forest edge
#

lots of hot trash

red rock
#

My best friend and her boyfriend bought a house

#

And I was messaging with him about what stuff to buy for making stuff smart

#

And at some point she was like

#

I have one thing I am worried about, he really wants to make stuff smart

#

And I was like, look, I will probably be more enthusiast about making everything smart than him

forest edge
#

gotta be kind of selective otherwise you end up spending more time "messing" with such devices than actually just turning on a light and going about your buisness etc

red rock
#

but messing with it is part of the hobby

forest edge
#

i get that, and it's fun to a degree.. but life is short and there are plenty of other things to do

red rock
#

honestly, I love playing with it

#

Like, it needs to work when I need it

#

but tinkering around with stuff is beautiful

shy comet
#

@tidal bronze you ever do a custom order? like 3x3 or 4x4 lol?

tidal bronze
#

Always. Now flying Dutchman

shy comet
#

the largest order ive ever seen was a 10x10

#

filled their entire "eat in the car" container

tidal bronze
#

Wish they served almond flour buns

shy comet
tidal bronze
#

I don't have that issue anymore. Stopped drinking soda few years ago.

#

Wish they served wine there. Will be daily lol

shy comet
forest edge
#

sir, could you make my food taste less good?

red rock
winged obsidian
forest edge
#

they actually only eat petri dish grown meat in california so it wouldn't make much diffrence

winged obsidian
#

I usually get In n Out to go specifically because I want beer too.

tidal bronze
#

Beer would only make sense in a michelada while having some Cajun crab.

shy comet
tidal bronze
#

Now we are talking.

shy comet
#

thats the main thing, burger needs to be hot

#

the best is when you leave the drive thru, park and start eating when your on the road

forest edge
#

just cook your own at home

tidal bronze
#

Hot with loads of pepperoncini

shy comet
#

even if you have spread its not the same

tidal bronze
#

Yes sir. Can't replicate the spread

forest edge
#

the flavor comes from all the previous burgers cooked before it

tidal bronze
#

It's thousand island, sriracha, x, y, z

winged obsidian
shy comet
tidal bronze
#

Yep

forest edge
shy comet
#

all our cows are mid state off the 5

tidal bronze
#

Lmao. @forest edge is thinking too much. You should've let him feel important for once

shy comet
#

you always know your driving by them when you forget to switch the air to circulate

forest edge
#

california isn't even in the top 10 for beef

#

surprise you even see cows there lol

shy comet
winged obsidian
forest edge
tidal bronze
#

Well other than watching news from NY and CA ๐Ÿคฃ

shy comet
#

our news is ๐Ÿฟ material...even moreso with these crazy smash and grab robbers

forest edge
#

it's ok, i'll just keep my smile knowing quad has a 1 in 3000 chance of ingesting some cow poop I scrapped off my boot when he goes to in and out lol

tidal bronze
#

@forest edge show me your cows

shy comet
#

cant believe they used bear spray on security on the one in glendale tahts crazy

forest edge
#

everytime you post some chart that texas pie just keeps getting bigger and bigger lol

tidal bronze
#

Once again, you missed that class in high school that taught you your trillions

forest edge
#

maybe it's linked to you trying to brag

#

post more and faster, lets see if we can watch california dip to second place together lol

tidal bronze
#

Can brag all day Bubba got the charts to show it. I am waiting for your top 10 cow chart?

forest edge
#

look it up, you think california is leading in the beef?

#

oh wait, of course you auto assume that

#

and wrong as usual lol

tidal bronze
#

Why lead with one when you can lead

shy comet
#

when you have the best pot and wine on earth you kinda get to assume you lead in most things lol

tidal bronze
#

Yes sir.

forest edge
# tidal bronze Why lead with one when you can lead

Beef production in the United States is a vital sector of the agricultural industry, contributing significantly to the nationโ€™s economy and food supply. The U.S. is one of the worldโ€™s leading beef producers, with a long-standing tradition of cattle ranching and a diverse landscape that supports various production systems. With a vast land area, ...

tidal bronze
#

Too drunk to click links. Post charts.

forest edge
#

thats ok, if you can't click a link you can't understand a chart either lol

tidal bronze
#

I can distinguish sizes

#

Come on playa time to show up

forest edge
#

shh

#

let him see it

winged obsidian
#

Are the Misery cattle sick or something?

shy comet
forest edge
#

there is your chart

shy comet
tidal bronze
#

@forest edge number 3 right on.

winged obsidian
#

Asking because by # of cattle it's MO #3 and CA #15, but the chart @forest edge just shared says by value CA is #7 and MO is #9.

winged obsidian
tidal bronze
#

Yikes

#

@shy comet just imagine the good shrooms going retail ๐Ÿคฃ

forest edge
shy comet
#

does this mean the definition of california sober is about to change?

winged obsidian
tidal bronze
#

Dude come on now @forest edge you don't know where missouri stands in the cow game?

#

Only game in town right?

tidal bronze
#

It's easier when the thermostat flies to you right?

shy comet
tidal bronze
#

Shit's about to get "real"

You just bury the boundary wire, pretty common, I haven't seen them ever implemented without them, most Norwegian gardens have a cliff or river or potato field or strawberry field or some kind of raised Terrance

#

I think the newest ones even can make virtual boundary wires

#

Like the roborock

ocean oar
#

Yeah, it's the "virtual" one I don't trust. Physical cable-with-power-flowing-through that defines a hard outer limit, that is definitely the smart choice
