oh right they whole torque vs power thing
I've definitely also biked home with a pizza strapped to the rear rack on more than one occasion lol
Can't do that on that Kona
depends on the hill ๐
Is it the shocks that increase the price that much? It's only aluminum and Deore which shouldn't be expensive
likely development cost and greed
that's an ev bike?
Nope
isn't that what the whole conversation was about? range on ev bike
I don't think so lol
The range comes from the breakfast
middle earth has entered the chat
Don't forget about the determination
caffeine and nicotine
I don't think a single ebike has been mentioned, but since you asked, this was a fun project as well
this was your response to a 6k ev bike tho
so yea.. I just went with the whole thing being about electric lol
He said they aren't electric
yeah, brakes can make or break a ride
Bad brakes can be really bad
I came into seeing the convo and saw this comment. I just assumed.. the mother of all fuck ups
what a boring conversation.. not even about ev lol
Don't you mean make or brake
wish i had known prior. would have just stayed out of it
If the foilage starts to talk watch out
There's a saying in Tennessee...
only the one?
that was the saying, it is just literally, "There's a saying in Tennessee..."
i could say something, but it would be NSFW ๐
thanks captain obvious, I was asking if there were any more
It was a vague reference to George Bush (former US president) saying something stupid lol
Is there any president who didnt
there were two of them, equally stupid comments from both
"You fool me, but you can't get fooled again."
Sept. 17, 2002
tags @clever mortar about it getting all political up in here..
Even I'm not triggered yet
first of all, it's comedic license
FAIR USE
secondly talking about history
Something something freeze peach
not a current politician
save it for the judge
Judge Judeez nuts
small.
@tidal bronze just saw the good news that you were able to finally get out of burning man
must have been hard being trapped there
Go to that desert next week, pick up a lifetime supply of free bikes.
I read somewhere that they do actually do a really good job cleaning up the mess from that event unlike so many others
when mass production goes awry
Next big thing. Just like electric scooters still seem to be
it's chinese metal.. it is worthless lol
It may be poor quality but it's still a resource
thats questionable
thier entire infrastructure is crumbling around them. quite literally. why would you just remake the same things that crumble?
plenty of youtube videos showing how even thier building material is basically crap
You could just make anything else out of stuff
nothing of real value tho.. so whats the diffrence?
Why not. The value doesn't come from it's shape
they have access to quality stuff, and they do use that to make some things but the majority of it, is literally just crap
talking about the resource
chinesium best.
they are currently rebuilding entire buildings because they have a 5-10 shelf life
but they can also build a building in a few hours so why not
screw redecorating, just build a new one
I'm three cars behind you
you wish lmao
dont you mean 3 bikes
For the bikes at least it's steel which could have more use than sitting as broken bikes. Even if it's poor quality
yea they could be turned into many of the "quality" tools they pump out that breaks before it even leaves the package lol
Ah yes because that's all that can be done
don't worry, it seems like norwegian like buying all that crap up.. just give them time to pump out a bigger population
now you really wanna be sad about something. check out those massive tire mountains in kuwait
They sell it to :Ikea: for people to assemble. Can't be broken out of the box if you don't assemble it

Tires are pretty much a wear part surely we managed to sell it to others
We do that with plenty of our garbage
recycling rubber isn't as easy as it sounds when dealing with those big numbers tho
way more toxic and pollutant to the world than scrap metal
I guess you never seen the freighter/cruise ship graveyards in Africa either Sonoma
were they break them down barefoot
I have but as i just said..
A smart move. Load ship with garbage, scrap the ship
What are they gonna do? Ship it back?
Kinda amazing how this is acceptable and not done with nuclear waste, at least I hope
Historically they have. Iโve got doubts about their ability to do it this year. At minimum theyโll have to wait weeks for it to dry enough, and stuff will get buried in the mud.
Also Bangladesh https://maps.app.goo.gl/umhABR6tycnJn8qt7?g_st=ic
Pin location isnโt great, turn on satellite photos and scroll NE a bit.
Nice. Bafang BBS02? That's what I put on my Giant hardtail. Was heaps of fun but a bumpy commute. So I upgraded to a Frey full suspension (before they got stupid expensive).
It's pretty heavy and the brake disks were too small (since replaced) but other than that it has been awesome. It's the AM1000 V1 (they're up to V6 now). Some have had frame issues but I don't do enough sick jumps for that to be an issue.
Dont know where to ask this but: anyone knows if its possible to put a wifi switch on a streetlight?
@glacial knot I need some yaml loop help for a collegue ๐
yaml loop? ๐
Legally? ๐ฎ
A lot of things are possible, but if you are allowed to...

Totally illegal, aim a laser pointer at the street-light daylight switch. That'll switch it off. I used to do that when using my telescope in my backyard. Controlling power to the laser should be easy enough in HA. Ask in DIY if you need help.
I don't think our lights work that way o.0
Some do, but most of them are too synchronous in how they turn on/off for it to be on individual sensors
Ofc, i know its illegal. Its in the alley of my backyard and also for the telescope. Im not sure if we have a daylight switch on the outside ๐
Same, it look like a timer or something
Im gonna look for a fuse and maybe ill just pull it out then lol
Does it have a bump on top like this? https://www.digitalpressworks.com/dealing-with-street-lights/
Ours have access boxes on comfortable height. The "key" is just a slightly specific wrench shape
Though you are not allowed to open them
They have live wires at all times, and are fused high enough to make some crispy human
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khp3wb0QMpQ one lamp should have one, controlling a few
No, its a straight one not curved
Yeah sounds about the same as here.
Yeah, I've never seen a sensor on the street lights, they are all controlled from a central point
and switch on simultaniously
Then again, Norway probably has the highest number of streetlights per road in the world, I'm always amazed when I travel abroad that y'all don't have streetlights
Would artillery be a viable option?
There is hardly any road, small or large in Norway that doesn't have streetlight
Maybe on the freeway idk
Oh yea, I could lend you my ๐น
Lol
when I got to france the first time, I was flabbergasted, since they don't even enforce car headlights on at night
damn french people
driving from Lyon to Grenoble was pitch dark
You need to open your eyes while driving
Well ill just look for a fuse or i just cover it then ๐ซฃ

There actually is something on top but might also just be a screw for the cap
Is that a street lamp on private property? Here those often have an extra box with a light sensor like this nearby.
Street lamp in an alley
That's what the gov wants you to believe! It's a camera tracking every move!
it has an acces box with a special key (triangle)
And from what ive read on the internet, the signal (Frequency) goed through copper wires and turns them on
If its rf maybe ๐, if wires i need to acces the thing i guess
Yeah most cities in australia are lit pretty decently, but canberra has barely any, legally can't have that many to ensure its dark for the major nearby observatory
Typical street isn't too different than most cities I've seen
Canberra is esepcially bad though
Yeah if you don't have sunlight they're important
Picture from my hometown in winter, we use a lot of light
that is probably around 2pm or so
since there is some light on the sky
reminds me of my time in Sweden
sunset around 1pm
sun rose around 11am
lol
and it just got worse
2pm and that dark already?! looks nice though
in the most dark part of winter we have maybe 3-4h of any light
and never above the horizon
Thats crazy, i experience must that
Normal for you probably ๐
Just like, there are some countries where ist always dark or daylight ๐คฏ

but we have winter from september till june some years
Its cold there now? ๐ฑ
Svalbard is 26th of october till 16th of february
well, this year has been very strange, and due to global heating snow is rare in september now
when I grew up it was pretty normal
I've dug my car out of snow on my birthday, 5th of june

It actually would be really nice if i can put some kind of wifi switch in it so i can turn it of when i want
Not a lot of room under the lamp, and operating temperature would be high. In the pole would be tough to get a wifi signal. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Didnt think about that.. is sure has to be inside the pole yes.
Maybe just throw a big tarp over it
Yeah thats probably the easiest way
Ofc the simpsons can help lolll
Wife approved me to build a new computer so son can get my hand me down(5800x), trying to decide if I want b650e vs b650 AM5 board :/
Neither since those are AM5 and the CPU is AM4
Find yourself some nice B550 in whatever configuration you need
my current setup is a 5800x sorry for confusion, being given to my kid
getting a 7800x3d they are onsale at microcenter, just trying to decide if I need PCIE 5 for the graphics card
How much is the difference right now? You probably don't need it now but if you plan to upgrade the AM5 platform should stay here for a few generations
not that much 20-3o dollars, also thinking of going with a "budget" x670e board to really future proof(no such thing but you know)
I really wouldn't bother unless you plan on really using those extra pci-e lanes

#ryzen #motherboard #am5 #x67...
God I feel old, I'm rocking a 5.1 setup and many new motherboards don't even have the 3.5mm jacks for surround sound, then it dawned on me my setup is like 15 years old :/
ah yes. http on port 443
that's why they make these ๐ https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NBA-200U-External-Channel-Adapter/dp/B004HXGJ3S
actually have that in my amazon shopping basket
Its hard to get rid of Logitech THX certified self powered system thats older then my kids but still works just fine
Yeah, most systems use digital surround sound now, and use a single HDMI or SPDIF cable to transfer all audio channels.
hard to replace what just work, so its going the way of the PS/2 connection ๐
I mean, it's possible to doโjust unusual
SPDIF has been an option since the 1980's, and is/was often included along-side analog surround outputs on motherboards ๐
Yeah, just checked, my current Z690 motherboard has analog surround and SPDIF outputs
The boards I'm looking at don't, its all about compromises I guess
Which board you looking at?
I think I'm going with a Steel Legend b650e, as much as I am leary toward asrock MSI and Asus are doing it for me with the packages they are offering
aren't*
Yeah, no analog surround on that board, it requires you use SPDIF
yep, all the Asrock boards are like that this generation I think, HONESTLY i use my headphones more then anything but I still enjoy real surround sound when watching a movie or some games
I'm assuming this is a self-powered computer surround-sound system without a built-in decoder of any kind?
Because if it's a standard home theater surround sound system, you'd just connect one TOSLINK cable from your motherboard to the reciver and be good to go

StarTech to the rescue. There's always an adapter. lol
This'll take the TOSLINK port on that board and break it out into a bunch of analog outputs
logitech z506 12 years old approximately, makes me wonder if I should just upgrade and give these to my kid lol
wow ram has gotten cheap
why not just get a used soundcard?
ssds have gotten a lot cheaper aswell
not sure I get what you are saying?
unfortunately I can't do any PCI-E sound cards because oh my computer is setup vertical graphics card with a riser cable
why not usb?
Thats the plan
asus xonar u5 or u7 arent rare on the second hand market and not all too expensive
@finite atlas also picked up 2 - 2 TB Crucial NVME drives as well, p5 plus's not gen5 but honestly I'm not even sure I need gen 4 lol
I actually got them because they have dram, they weren''t to bad
so many cheap NVME's have no onboard memory
there is a good reason they are cheap :p
But I agree on not needing an NVME other then not wanting physically mounted drives in my setup(wall hanging water cooled system)
I have my finger's crossed my waterblock will work with AM5, it SHOULD as it is standard AMD mounting with thumb screws on the corners
am5 was designed, to be well compatible with existing am4 coolers
yeah its the height that becomes an issue, which I should be ok with. Going from a 5800x to a 7800x3d truely the only reason I'm upgrading is my kids computer is getting a little slow and its an excuse :/
His isn't even that bad, I think is a 3600x(maybe 2600x I forget)
with a 2070
Nephew is getting that I believe... lol its a triple upgrade
Ah the hand-me-down chain
Well I went a whole other direction and went with an MSI board instead, with the savings of not paying for the DAC and the toslink cable it only cost me 10 more dollars and it is an x670e board

@forest edge when did switch from car to suv? I like the wrap ๐
last I checked California charges for property tax for vehicles so that cali tag is a dead giveaway that even to save a few bucks, I wouldn't be caught dead sporting it regardless what vehicle it's bolted on lol
Gender reveal: my RAV4 is blue. It might even be the same age as that one. Runs great, 103k miles.
@forest edge Iโd have to look up the taxes, but <$100 last year.
I still haven't decided if my RAV4 is greenish-silver or silvery-green

Just pay it and move on what's so complicated about taxes?
Only if you can catch them.
To be fair, with those short legs that might not be too difficult
Would overlaying coverage of a wifi network either with more aps of the same/a different network help to keep speeds up / latency low?
It may be my imagination but running 60ish devices on a mesh seems like it's a bit slower to load websites than before
if you are running mixed mode (2.4 \ 5ghz) on the same ssid that will usually also slow down stuff
when I tried that on my tp link mesh it gave me 70Mbps with mixed, and 550Mbps with only 5g
Currently I run all my wifi smort devices over the guest network on the same aps
Like I could switch them out for either faster ones or buy the sameish once again and replace the guest network by its own hardware
Weird
I'm easily getting 500+ with mixed with my unifi gear
If it drops to 2.4 for whatever reason then it will be slow of course but never had that happen
It's some tp link stuff. Ui gear sadly doesn't have nice to put ones
I prefer the look of Unifi gear for on ceiling, the omada gear looks too bulky
Can't wait for Atx to ๐คฎ me
I kinda like the cup style shape on a shelf as those are rather easy to hide in sight
Only weird thing is their magical ethernet backup. It either does route traffic over it or it doesn't but reverse links it over wifi
And there is no way to configure that :^)
No it doesn't...
mesh, yuck
Was your mesh falling back to 2.4GHz for some reason?
Wireless meshing is generally crap in my experience.
UniFi's wireless meshing caused all kinds of weird problems for me when I tried it, WDS on OpenWRT was a pita to configure and never quite stable for me.
My dad has a TP-Link mesh with a mixed network though and other than him needing to physically power cycle APs once a month or so it works fine.
His neighborhood has always had periodic power issues though so I blame that for needing power cycling
wired 802.11r ftw
I use Unifi's fast roaming, which I think is 802.11v?
I looked into all that at one point
I run mixed mode on my Unifi stuff and generally get 300-500Mbps speed tests over wifi.
I'm pretty sure having mixed AC and 5GHz AX clients will affect AX client max speed, but AC should still give 200-300Mbps.
Might just be my clients that are funky when I did the testing
@solar zealot it's been my experience that too many APs is just as bad as not enough APs, because they talk over each other and lots of radio interference even if you have them on different channels. I've had a couple sites I've improved performance by pulling a couple APs
if your APs can't support enough simultaneous devices without bogging down, then it's time to maybe consider switching to Ubiquiti UniFi
also I set up an IDIoT network for all the gadgets, that network can't talk back to the main network, but the main network can initiate communication to IDIoT devices
also when you mesh APs, I mean connect them wirelessly instead of over a cable, you lose a big hunk of performance for every hop you get away from the wire.
performance - network throughput
Currently the setup is 3 aps, two of which are connected by cables. They should support "up to 100 devices", whatever that means. More capable ones from the deco line do a bit more but not by a whole lot
Id suspect that dropping more money into it may not give me the funky results
Even tho the guest network with the smort devices is 2.4ghz only for compatibility reasons while the other also has 5 enabled
Sadly there isn't really any debug stuff provided from those aps to figure out what's up
I have about 65 wifi devices, I've ran them off of two unifi APs before but I have four now.
@solar zealot so what kind of symptoms are you experiencing?
ok, noob question, but when you run docker in mcvlan and the container get own ip and mac, why would it care if port 80 is used on another container? I get in use, even if every container is on mcvlan
It's mostly that sites load a bit sluggish and playing games over wifi drops a bit more packages than would be acceptable
Also to the zfs gurus here. Is it possible to add drives to a zfs pool? I have 5 available drives I would like to add to the pool, but I am not sure how to do it
No that is not how zfs works
If your current pool is 5 drives you can add a new vdev to it with the five other drives
But then a failure of either vdev results in data loss of all pool data
Shouldn't, also you shouldn't use macvlan
check out how tiny shelly's new relay is
plus esp32 so you could set up ble proxy in esphome and maybe ble tracking but i haven't been able to get ble tracking to work with my esp32 dev boards
Overlapping coverage is good for roaming devices. All static ones I would lock them to the AP with best signal.
can those be connected together? I know the support for adding disks one by one is is in pull request to the zfs project so hopefully it wont take too much time before it get accepted, @clear ferry
Kinda unreal that this isn't already a thing
Draid expansion has been in the works for 2 years already, I expect it to be ready in 2025
And that is dRAID, not raidz
anyone else get nervous before building a new computer, regretting having open loop water cooling setup right now lol
I haven't built one since 2009 and I have never bothered with water cooling, I do however work with full rack water cooled systems
So you suggest keeping two seperate pools?
alright. thats doeable. Right now I setup raidz on the pools. I guess that uses one drive for some pairity stuff
but what is the main issue if you have one big pool and do snapshots all the time?
on raidz (or raidz2)
I have one pool with 4x 8TB U2 drives as my "fast drive" for docker, vm etc and one zfs pool drive for movies, tv shows, and general storage
I also got 4x 2TB enterprise NVME, but I have no idea what to use them for
you vs the guy she told you not to worry about
@forest edge this reminded of you.
it's like a fish laid a bunch of eggs in some custard

Mine is 8R3 Pacific Blue Metallic. Yeah, I just had to do some touch-up.
Anything that starts with Pacific is always a win.
I have to check what my color is ๐คฃ
Must be some variation of black as always
I got the email for that and just wondered if the terminals are even worse for Australian cabling requirements. My highlight of that product release was the wall panels if they do everything they pitch and if I can maybe get them connected locally to HA and doing even more fancy one day
this looks expensive
Kinda weird that Shelly doesn't just start selling switches with the features already built in
It's relative ๐
Haha, understandable
https://providencela.com/menus/dinner/ see for yourself ๐
The relay method allows them to address both loop at switch and loop at light wiring without needing a rewire, also means cosmetically you can choose what the plate on you wall looks like
I mean, the new wall plate they released also has a switch built in too
Sounds really nice
The assumption is that a wall recess can fit an additional device which sadly isn't the case everywhere. On the other hand such sockets totally will fit a switch or a socket as that's what they are meant to hold
150 bucks for their wall display kinda seems like a non solution for turning on a directly connected light fixture if that's the one you mean
rabbit turds? that a 5 star cuisine?
Oh I fully understand your position; however I am willing to bet theyโre still in the company size range where they need to be able to cover as many applications using as few production lines as possible. If they can achieve the same form factor as the Clipsal Iconic smart push button then I definitely agree Iโd love to see it
Has anyone built a very lightweight Linux OS specially for HA-connected displays around their home? I havenโt found the correct combination of search terms yetโฆ
I was given a commercial wall panel for a home automation system that looked to have windows 95 embedded and I canโt decide if I should identify the chipset and try overwrite OS, or just scrap the board and stuff a Pi in its place. Iโm not confident with those little touchscreen ribbons as far as whether they have some kind of named standard for pinout either lol
Yep sun dried
just like your tree hugging brain ๐
Misery Chiefs got beat by the boy from California.
@forest edge me and crew are outside, we got the guard coyotes hostage
And we broke your filament making machine
The game I'm playing through right now has racoons in it randomly running around.
Ain't nobody getting this delicious trash...
Oh yeah? You and what army?
...
Oh...
looks i finally get to use my wood chipper
Thatโs a gruesome mental image
Not exactly how it works, you should read the zfs primer, also dRAID>raidZ
for raidz1 it's close enough
Snapshots to where? Unless you send those snapshots to another pool they aren't gonna help with data protection
Parity is still distributed, not on a single volume, that would be raid3
And how often does that make a real difference in how you handle the raid and it's components?
Okay, so I think I will use this housing but buy a pi touchscreen and space it to sit in the same position because this expensive hardware is kinda trash.
If I buy an Amazon Raspberry Pi sensor starter kit I can probably have it also provide a bunch of info back to HA as a bonus
You'd be surprised what can go wrong when people don't understand their storage
So when do you care about this difference?
Especially in a system that doesn't allow you to pick. Where there are some performance differences to consider
The benefit is draid has distributed parity so it resilvers faster and retains better performance when degraded.
There's no reliability benefit afaik
Though I guess it would result in less thrashing on physical media since one drive wouldn't be serving all parity calculation requests.
Understanding the underlying filesystem is quite important to understand its caveats, reliability and seperate functions, like the special vdev devices and more
Sure there is, it has dedicated distributed spare, and you can have multiple spares
I still miss a situation where that property matters
Don't beat around the bush
Multiple spares is not unique to draid, and 'dedicated distributed spare' makes no sense. You have no idea what you're rambling about, do you?
It sure isn't, but the implementation of sparing in draid is very similar to most SAN the last 20 years, and a whole lot more efficient and useful since it doesn't exclude drive IO from the pool
guess we need to order more gear from them then ;D
Done and done
Except I think Iโm getting a $60 pi touchscreen to replace the hardware in my current project first, and need to decide what kind of sensors I wish to add to the build if I want to try add fancy features
i am mad. samsung doesnt seem to make 2.5" 8tb ssds which dont use the qlc garbage
and kinda no one else does make em at this size
I scrounge for hard drives in stuff thatโs being thrown out and make use of them, I havenโt paid for or researched a drive in so long
Yikes
how fun when you are rsyncing 20TB and forget to turn it on before going to bed -- I am am idiot --

Rebranded Samsungs are also good, a lot of the hpe ones are either Samsung or hynix
Used that is
Great U2 deal too
If the bidding doesn't go too High
@clear ferry if you are setting up a NAS today what would be the most power efficient and low noise setup?
How many bays?
I'd say any mini itx with a n95/100 and a chassis with the required bays, HDDs would entail some kind of fans either way, with SSDs you might get away with fully passive cooled
N100 has a tdp of 6w and gives you 4 cores and 3.4ghz
If only storage even that is overkill
If doing more, depends on the load
16GB memory does allow barely zfs, if only zfs though
Would work, for small workloads
Wouldn't recommend it
16GB lowest I'll recommend for zfs
to top it off, i also added a 16gb optane cache for zfs to the 8gb of total ram
gave the 1tb hdd mirror array a useable speed
Yikes
You can just plonk down 32gb onto it
Thank you
@static schoonerThink I may have already asked you, even recently in fact if you had used HA to track your cats weights or not?
I don't remember, so much shit has happen over the past few months it's hard for me to retain lol
Nope
do you not track thier weight at all? or just glance at the app and rely on vet visits?
Hmm, I never considered tracking my dog's weight like that.
I maintain a 2 week glance in HA but do long term track using influx
I have a fat cat who is on a diet at the vet's suggestion
She's 16lb, should be closer to 10
Ah. My dog was overweight when I got her but she got down to a healthy weight pretty quickly and hasn't really ever deviated.
I think part of that was because she had an undiagnosed injury when I got her so she wasn't very active.
She had a blown disc in her spine, the vet thought she got hit by a car at some point. I had to keep her crated for 6 weeks after I got her to let it heal.
Didn't know until we came home after a walk and she couldn't make it up the two steps on my porch by herself.
not sure if I should be using statistics senor to show just mean data or if that would ultimately smooth out more important fluctuations
the time the cats like to keep their front feet on the entry way while doing their buisness causes dips which I think a statitics sensor would eliminate if I understand how those work correctly
I just added a state_class to start LTS
I had created one statitics sensor for one cat to see how it would go. the original template sensor I have has a state class for it. both show diffrent pounds up to almost a pound diffrence
the statics shows a mean off a 24 hr period
like the cats last actual reading was 13.26 and the statics sensor currently shows 14.07. I am not 100% comfortable with that diffrence
vet says a cat losing so much as half a pound within 7 days is a little concerning
so those changes can mean a lot
@tidal bronze aren't you using flume to meter your water?
Yes
is your current meter from the city a "smart meter" or just the old dial ones?
smart as in, smart for them to access not for you to get access lol
Smart, I can read from RF as well. Flume is easier.
curious cause mine is some sensus or whatever flex smart meter but it's data is encrypted. not sure if the flume would still work strapped to that thing vs an old school one
wait is flume cloud or local?
Flume will work. Cloud
gross
Cloud/Local I am good, as long as shit works. Flume works
welp I can't use flume, just checked the meter compatiablity on the flume site
Oh flume is not compatible with wooden water buckets? Such a shame
the opposite it would seem lol
if i had some ancient mayan meter it would have been fine
You should invest on getting running water done before a meter ?
Then again why flume? you can go 1 bucket, 2 bucket .....
Just do a text entry on HA problem solved
Both my meters are RF readable but only 1 is flume compatible
I might able to just pull the data from our more advanced water infrastructure. like my eletric. still gross cloud but atleast I won't be forking out 250+ on a device to force cloud access down my throt
We get a rebate for flume from LADWP
enjoy that quarter
Why did they encrypt the data? Worried barn folk might hurt themselves with numbers?
who knows.. maybe if it weren't we'd be stuck in the olden times like you west coasters
watering sand..
almost 1500 gallons in one day?

thats 133mยณ of water. how many avocado plantations are there??
You should've seen before the new sprinkler heads. ๐คฃ
No avocado. Lemon, pink grapefruit, apples, orange, blood orange, guava, and the usual veggies and herbs
at least the tasty stuff

is it anyone that use nordigen/gocardless bank API here that cant get new bank accounts out of it?
What strategies are there to handle storing IOT data offline and automatically uploading it when there is connectivity?
My use case: I'm looking to put HA on a Raspi w/cell modem in my RV. I plan to use it to track various things (location, solar & batteries, climate). I'd also like to upload the data to a server (cloud based or at home) for viewing when I'm not in the RV.
I have all the tooling to ingest information from the various sensors and I'd originally planned on brokering that to HA via MQTT since that's a good fit. I realized that there may be times where I wont be able to get cell coverage. In these cases, I'd like to store the results and upload them later when I do get coverage. MQTT is not meant to store-and-foreward.
This seems like a common problem for remote data gathering in the IOT world, but I'm not finding much in the way of solutions that arent super hacky or some proprietary system.
using a python script you could write new values to like a txt and then read from that txt when it comes time to send an mqtt
there is no easy means within HA to store and send ondemand in that regard. you would have to just screate a script that does all of that and simply just use HA as the information source/sender etc
I'm fine with going around HA as far as the store and forward part. I just didnt know if there was something built-in I could leverage.
not in the manor you would like.
Someone suggested storing the info in an RRD, but as far as I know, that doesnt have any built-in store and foreward functionality.
It would just be a marginally better option that a text file ๐
I haven't used it but maybe litestream or things similar to it could be what you're looking for?
Hmmm... Could be. I'd not heard of that before. I'll have to check it out. Seems like the connection recovery bit is just a side benefit rather than key functionality, so I'm not sure how robust it is. One way to find out!
You basically want some kind of replication or (two-way) diff/merge tool for the database I presume.
Yeah... Though it would only need to be one-way. No information needs to be synced back to the RV.
you wanting back log for theft situations? like gps coords?
And to see the state of the battery and solar. I have a Renogy system which has a decent data output showing usage, charging, etc.
That was actually my main goal, but it turns out most of the cell modems come with GPS, so that was a bonus ๐
how often is this RV out of cell range?
depends... The modems arent that good - could be hours, could be days. I figure I wouldnt need to sample more often than every 5 or 10 minutes. Maybe I could even have it sample every 30 minutes unless moving, then scale back to 5 or something like that.
The sensors are all read via Python APIs
relying on those solar panels keeping that battery up
yes... I can shut down the modem entirely when it's not transmitting
So then it'd just be the draw of the Pi... I might even be able to get away with a Pi zero - there's not much heavy processing going on.
HA could be shut down when I'm not present
ha on a zero is not fun, if that's what you are refering to
Ah.. Maybe that lives on a different box.
I'd have to play with how HA interacts with the databases... I could just run an MQTT host on the zero and the ingestor and store-and-forward mechanism. HA could be on a different box, when I'm actually present, it'd start and read from the external MQTT database.
Not sure... I've got the hardware, but the architecture is still in the design phase ๐
I have an rpi in a barn with ha that I communicate via cell with. but the barn dosen't move so loss of cell coverage is not an issue lol
I'd like to think the 200w solar panels and dual 12v batteries would keep even a Pi4 with a cell modem easily running indefinitely. Even in the Pacific Northwest ๐
yea I would imagine. but you don't need a 4 for what your doing
if your pulling data already without using ha, you could probably do it all from a zero
Ya... But I'm still back to the 'how to store and forward'. I'll mess with litestream. I dont have a ton of SQLite experience, I guess now's as good a time to learn. I also need to find a way to minimize SD card writes. Maybe a USB thumb drive. Or keep the DB in memory and flush it to disk daily.
thumbdrive is no better than sdcard
my barn has a samsung endurance card in it, handled all the extreme temps thrown out it so far from over 100F to near 0f so far
If it's on a separate drive, at least a death-by-write wont take out the OS.
pis can do overlay-fs and also read-only. each will increase your sd card life substantially
Unlimited dd'ing!

only just came here to see if theres anything for my anki Vector.... 3 years later ๐

I assume you've seen the Dream Labs stuff, the Facebook group and Discord for the Anki Vector?
I don't seem to find any valid invitation for the discord group and on Facebook only one group seems to be working but, I don't I'll be getting any answers over there.
In the mean time I've managed to something workable but by far it can be called an integration lol.

Unboxing the OnePlus Keyboard 81 Pro
they just don't want to spy on your phone anymore
OnePlus made a keyboard?
Hope they put in the switches the right way around so that they don't ghost click and everything overheats when you use the numpad for half a minute
I do love my OnePlus 8 pro, but it's time for an upgrade
You should consider having this unicorn graded before reselling ๐
Reselling? What nonsense
I noped-out on that keyboard almost immediately.
I have a laundry list of issues with it, but suffice it to say, anyone considering the OnePlus keyboard should probably consider the Keychron Q1, which the OnePlus keyboard is based on:
https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-q1?variant=39898878771289
Keychron is love
Curious what the issues are (haven't even looked into the OnePlus keyboard just curious), apart from the fact it's OnePlus that is
Lots of odd design choices that I don't appreciate. I'm not a fan of non-standard condensed layouts (which this uses), the chrome plaque with a glass nob on it looks tacky/gawdy, it includes per-key RGB lighting but then slaps completely opaque keycaps on them, and then the height adjustment doesn't have any detents or any kind of locking mechanism.
I'm also wary of anything LED backlit, because I'm highly sensitive to the flicker from cheap/slow PWM circuits. The reviews and the spec-sheet don't mention the switching frequency, which often means "we didn't list it because it's not good. Enjoy your keyboard being a strobe light!"
Lol, incandescent bulbs did have that one thing going for them. Small hot wire stays hot ๐
But based on, did they copy it or did they rebrand it
Neither, it was made in partnership with Keychron
It has the same PCB inside as the Keychron Q1. The case is custom.
Yeah, I use my number pad waaaay too much to ditch it
Entering IP addresses, phone numbers, bank card numbers, PIN numbers, etc.
Keychron K4
Your personal identification number numbers? ๐
Sorry being an ass
Don't forget extra keys for shortcuts or for your soundboard
Shus
Do you have any use for num pad?
People who don't want a numpad likely overlap with people who don't want a webcam in their notebook
It yields the most important dedicated navigation keybinds
i only use my numbpad for keybinds in cheats
Numeric keypad is a must for me too. I wanted a Chromebook for a while but never pulled the trigger until the first one with a numeric keypad came out back in 2019
I don't think @forest edge calculates hay bale dimensions on the regular ๐ค

Sorry Bubba not going to happen in your lifetime. Pick another state.
did the ostrich say something?
What do you use a Chromebook for
paperweight
Email, interwebs, budgeting, SSH
work at times o.0
my main corp laptop is a proper linux install. but we have a stack of chromebooks in a corner to grab when I need a secondary device
My corp device is also Linux, against company policy
There is a loophole if we work in r&d we can run Linux, so I'm just using that excuse
Haven't run the corporate windows nonsense since 2012
And I don't use my Chromebook anymore since my firefly weighs next to nothing
corporate windows ๐ that's not been a thing for me. Ever
I've got a corp laptop to do whatever with
And then a work Citrix thing to use for anything else there too.
We got dell xps15s and some people game on them
I got a Lenovo Carbon X1
and there's some internal guide for installing steam on the corp linux distribution o.0

Anyone running proxmox?
is it a bad thing that I want to ping ATX?

Fixing rebuild most of my self hosted stuff with Promox
on a scale of 1-10... how bad of an idea is it
lol
Great option if you need to segregate things or run different operating systems for some reason
Given most self hosted stuff runs under Docker on Linux... that's the route I'd go
@upper apex I converted your message into a file since it's above 15 lines :+1:
Well thank you lol
I need a True Nas solution as right now im pointing things at each individual HDD.. vs a pool
Do you have a multiple of equal disks?
yeah removing a cluser F of old disks and adding two 22TB tomorrow
so maybe true nas or unraid?
would only being using true nas for its hdd pool/share abilities though
lot of peple.
Fixed that for you
did i say "allot"
You can't add single drives later to zfs
im the worst with that
*yet
work on that is now sponsored ๐ฎ
Even if its a matching drive?
nope. Not single drives
super weakkkkk
you can add new vdevs, but you want more than a single drive in the vdev
Zfs is not for people with "some drives" and less than 64GB ram
A vdev is a grouping of disks, in a pool
3-10 of them and if your first vdev is 5 disks your next needs to be too
didnt understand this last part
Add five drives, then if you want to expand you'll add five more
Adding 10 you need to add 10 more to expand
Why just never add one at a time then?
Then, sure, but it makes no sense with zfs
So ZFS is essentially Raid 1?
No
Mirrors the data?
It has things similar to raid, but no
You add multiples of drives, that are each their own "raid" group
That go in the same pool
If one of those raid groups fail, data is gone
giving you one path correct?
and yeah data is split up between all drives so if one goes everything goes
hmm
so if I needed 44TB of storage, and wanted ZFS.. I would have to buy two more drives?
or only 22TB of ZFS with what I have now.. ๐
Three drives in a raidz1 will give you 2x drive capacity
And if you want to expand in the future you need to add 3x22 drives
if it's data that's easy but annoying to get again just use btrfs ๐ฎ
Don't use btrfs for anything but mirrors
My zfs pool is 20x8TB drives
so would be annoying to re-find 44tb of data
but wouldnt be the end of the world
so your suggesting unraid
72gb on the main machine
That'll suffice for zfs, but still for expansion unraid is better
so I understand unraid runs baremetal.. That same machine has my video card in it I need for transcoding.
should I virtualize unraid?
ahh so unraid is similar to truenas were you can add other containers?
an you add portainer on it?
Truenas has a botched Kubernetes thing
or does unraid have a descent GUI or working with the dockers?
Don't use portainer, and unraid has gui container management
alright frick truenas then
and last question i think
can I pass through a GPU in docker for a plex server?
I know i can with proxmox and truenas
Yes
and we talking acutal docker docker
Yes
or unraids own version of containers
No
alright so lots of support
It's just a frontend
hmm
hmmmmmm
so 100% you suggest installing unraid baremetal
For your usecase yes
any kind of software I can install on the other devices for and has some type of kuberneties/cluster type thing going?

https://www.talos.dev/ and please report back.
Proxmox and can add other nodes/servers and interact with them within the same GUI
Yeah, I don't use any of these, no idea, I manage my stuff myself
ahh ok
oh, you mean with unraid? I don't think they have that
aight
with docker..via portainer, right now I spin up a container per app
does it make more sense to spin up one container and add mutiple apps to the same container?
that makes sense?
no
not even sure what they are running, some version of linux?
but each spin up of that opperating system is using a little bit of resources
containers are incredibly light on the OS. You'll spend more resources on some kind of process manager in the container than spinning up another container
haha alright
and you just run the chance of some odd bugs with some cobbled together not really process management
Plex needs to be able to run at full capacity... wonder if it will run poorly via docker
running it on windows atm.
sonar/radarr (I use the hotio containers) annoy me because they run s6 and require root to start the container, then drop privileges later
while I just want to have the entire container locked down D:
there can be some difficulties with getting the GPU accessible properly. But once you have that, it'll run essentially as on host
What about ESXI? Heard of that? Pros/Cons?
@upper apex free version can be limited, mainly about how backups can be handled, paid version is mega bucks unless you use vmug advantage.
It is however very very stable and runs on any old server hardware flawlessly
I have some experience with dockerโฆ still thinking Unraid is still a great option if not the best
Docker used to use lxc as backend
In the before days
I'm a VCAP-DCV if that counts
So I might have heard of esxi
Only worked with it for 16 years though
That's 2011 or so isn't it?
Into 2014 at least iirc
But yea, a good bit ago
Almost the average age of a HAOS user since then
Me using docker inside an lxc
gotta love that the only way to get Apple to get rid of their proprietary crap is to force their hand
or you know, vote with your wallet for a product that suits you the best
it's more messed up that "enough" people continue to "want" to buy into apple products but then want to complain about something to the point to have to "force thier hand".
eh I kinda think its a good thing the way it went down. Too many devices doing their own thing makes it impossible to keep up with cables. Some of which you cant even simply replace
imagine what the world would be like now if everyone as oberfail stated, voted with their wallets? there wil always be a replacement for a company and the advancement and talent dosen't come from the compnay, but from the people

they kinda already voted with their wallet lol just may have done it begrudgingly
they were almost forced to adopt RCS surprised they didnt
its not like every single carrier has proper support for it now
apple is one of those companies that think they are too big to fail. Google is no different really but these products aren't made with your convince in mind, they are made to show just how little the average IQ is and how easy it is to serve shit on a paper plate and make someone pay out of pocket for it lol
If either jurisdiction requires it, it's a couple years until its enforced either way
Enough time to get some heads out of the respective asses
Afaik we have had it supported on all carriers since 2019
the game is to find the loophole and keep making people eat crap and those who do it with as little overhead possible wins
while some neat things have come out of the last couple of decades like non vomit inducing VR and electric vehicles that can do over the speed limit and make it to the grocery store and back i'm overall still disappointed with how fast tech is moving
agreed....EV will be worth it when they figure out how to power trucks and others. Until then if you like to road trip a EV car only slows you down
VR also feels like its in its infancy so excited to see what happens in the next 5-10 years for that
haha just watched that last night
if VR can get that good then i'll be impressed. but that movie shows a dark side to that tech at the same time lol
haha yea i dont see us hanging out in VR to see animated versions of ourselves like the movie....the next iteration of video chat will be what most people do
gaming on the other hand.....consoles are going to meet a sudden stop once the masses see what VR gaming is all about
i wouldn't be so sure. you see how dependent we've come to delivered goods and how lazy our work force is.
putting the final nail in movie theaters and other forms of entertainment that generally got people to leave thier homes is right around the corner. coupled with working from home etc etc
I could easy see most of our pop living most thier lives in VR lol
Ehh
VR with just glasses and hand tracking is still constantly breaking the natural input method
And without enough space and some game scripts written for that Space, that's not going to change
Mobile AR (Pokemon go, but no clunky phone) might be the actual game changer
movie theaters are not gong anywhere....maybe mom and pop and AMC chains etc... what we will see happen is a Disney theater opening up and other theaters alike. Giving a better experience with characters and themes can probably charge more too
not to say i like movie theaters charging more but im thankful we have assigned seating now and no longer need to wait in massive lines and can get food brought to your seat
yea not sure about that, first person shooters in VR are a game changer
your optimism is frightning lol
nothing like being able to peak around a corner or duck and point your arm etc...
movie theaters are cash cows if good movies are flowing in
it's all activities that get people out of thier homes, is mainly what I want pointing at
we have discussion in this server already about how little we see kids play outside.. it all kind of falls in line with where we are already moving towards
thats the inflation impact though lol
is it? or maybe inflation just killed off the little percentage still holding on
dude if we had gaming to the level kids have now where you can make like $15k a month im sure we would also be in the same boat
gaming is a sport now
wasnt one in the 80s
kids are now running off starting businesses lol
we kind of did with some esports. now instead of being a select few anyone can make gaming a career lol
making money while playing games has been a thing since pacman etc
cnat hate man....most parents now a days would rather their kids play video games than stare at YouTube
I don't see much of a diffrence there
the only benifit games have is it's not some asshat around same age doing something illegal
one allows kids to exercise logic and reason the other they just stare at with a blank face
strategizing and communicating is also essential life skills
have you been to a fast food joint lately? they develop that blank face regardless lmao
only in the drive thru, i dont go in unless i need to pee lol
i am not as optimistic as you. If I was younger I would probably legitimately fear what may happen in 20-30 years from now lol
Why you calling @forest edge names? So he should stop staring at youtube ?
You will deprive him of his primary source of news.
speaking of citizens from a state that has gone stagnant

the added sand in my burger is what gives it that exotic taste
those are some cheap burgers, gimme
you don't want it. the beef is old and the sand is plentiful
but I kinda do
Shame that you haven't had one. You haven't lived in the states till you've had that animal style.
animal style? you refering to the crunch of your burger where it taste like eating broken glass from the sand?
I really wish the shelly stuff was more available in and for the US. those products have been bar none the best I have ever had in terms of smart home stuff
there's lots of stuff outside misery
lots of hot trash
My best friend and her boyfriend bought a house
And I was messaging with him about what stuff to buy for making stuff smart
And at some point she was like
I have one thing I am worried about, he really wants to make stuff smart
And I was like, look, I will probably be more enthusiast about making everything smart than him
gotta be kind of selective otherwise you end up spending more time "messing" with such devices than actually just turning on a light and going about your buisness etc
but messing with it is part of the hobby
i get that, and it's fun to a degree.. but life is short and there are plenty of other things to do
honestly, I love playing with it
Like, it needs to work when I need it
but tinkering around with stuff is beautiful
theres no turning back from an animal style burger and fries lol
@tidal bronze you ever do a custom order? like 3x3 or 4x4 lol?
Always. Now flying Dutchman

do they have a cork fee?
this made me lol irl
sir, could you make my food taste less good?
They serve beer in Belgian McDonald's
Make sure that animal is with chilis and "fries well," for the extra crispiness.
they actually only eat petri dish grown meat in california so it wouldn't make much diffrence
I usually get In n Out to go specifically because I want beer too.
Beer!? Not usable
Beer would only make sense in a michelada while having some Cajun crab.
i live less than 5 min away from one so i always opt to go home, burger is still hot by the time i get home
Now we are talking.
thats the main thing, burger needs to be hot
the best is when you leave the drive thru, park and start eating when your on the road
just cook your own at home
Hot with loads of pepperoncini
i do and their delicious but not the same as in n out...even if you try to make the spread hard to replicate
even if you have spread its not the same
Yes sir. Can't replicate the spread
just means your cleaning your grill/pan too often
the flavor comes from all the previous burgers cooked before it
It's thousand island, sriracha, x, y, z
The Misery Petri Dish, they call it
really you taste sriracha in there??
Yep
we are one of the top 3 beef states. you got good chance your eating meat i spit on lol
all our cows are mid state off the 5

look it up, you think california is leading in the beef?
oh wait, of course you auto assume that
and wrong as usual lol
Why lead with one when you can lead
when you have the best pot and wine on earth you kinda get to assume you lead in most things lol
Yes sir.

Asking because by # of cattle it's MO #3 and CA #15, but the chart @forest edge just shared says by value CA is #7 and MO is #9.
Can't wait

Soo... lawnmowers.... anyone have a recommendation for a compatible one with Home Assistant that you're happy with?
๐
Most lawnmowers are compatible with all yards, actually.
Our garden has an un-fenced stream at the bottom. Gonna say that ones that pretend they can get by with GPS and computer vision are not compatible with mine. Ones with a boundary wire would be fine.
You just bury the boundary wire, pretty common, I haven't seen them ever implemented without them, most Norwegian gardens have a cliff or river or potato field or strawberry field or some kind of raised Terrance
I think the newest ones even can make virtual boundary wires
Like the roborock
Yeah, it's the "virtual" one I don't trust. Physical cable-with-power-flowing-through that defines a hard outer limit, that is definitely the smart choice
Weather looks nice ๐
Winter is coming, was 7c this morning, love it when the car heats itself
Other side of the world, it's just starting to get warm here. Finally switched to wearing shorts
Put it on the Barbie?
Next door to. I would say "always blow on the pie" but that is a VERY specific reference that people are absolutely not going to get outside of NZ

And no I haven't heard that one before

So Police Ten-Seven is one of those shows that follows the Police around on patrol, that is one of the more famous segments
I can say too, I have been to Norway. But for 4 days / 3 nights, on holiday
