steel crag

forest edge

keep your beer gardens and pansy pubs.. even the lower tier's need some place to hang out

steel crag
#

well it's gonna be argued that that article wasn't written by a native

but I'll gladly join you in the garden, with beer

static schooner
#

there's a place that literally exists

steel crag

oh I know

but it might not be 'real' enough just cuz it exists

beer garden? NIMBY

I wouldn't be caught dead in any of those places. looks like daycare

static schooner

daycare with beer is an interesting business proposition

#

drop off the kids, head to the garden, where there's beer

forest edge
#

sure it's actual beer and not Zima?

last time I saw a Zima, I was an undergraduate

I've seen a few Zima places that look like that.. they weren't called beer garden's either but the look fits

My boss and I were talking about Home Assistant in our 1:1 and I brought up HA is probably one of the only pieces of software I'm actually really excited to get updates for, and he shared that excitement. So many apps these days have nothing-updates that add nothing to the experience (or are just to shove more tracking or A/B tests in), but not HA! Every update is incredibly packed with really useful, fun, and polished features.

It's really a testament to everyone that works on Home Assistant that one can have such enthusiasm for a piece of software. It really is one of the most polished open source projects I've ever seen :)

Just thought I'd share some appreciation for all the contributors and community.

Has anyone compared IPoAC to Waterfowl or Equine carriers?

clever mortar
clear ferry
#

IPoAC is nothing without proper QoS though

#

Alan cox did try it in bergen one year though

winged obsidian
#

There's a paradigm shift. Previous tests have been based on comparing delivery by single avian carriers, ignoring "big sky bandwidth." There's a whole approach to QoS that hasn't been probed adequately through even statistical means. Which is all to say these experiments are by a bunch of flocking amateurs.

I ran non-stock roms on both the G3 and G6, no change in battery life.

I didn't bother on the V35 because LG's version of Android is already pretty much just AOSP + a few bundled LG apps.

#

It's not like Samsung's garbage where the stock rom is an unusable Apple clone

I kept buying LG because LG consistently offered a non-bloated Android experience on phones that retained a MicroSD card slot, headphone jack, no screen notch, and Qi charging, all in one package.

It's the same issue that killed my G3: the switch to lead-free solder.

winged obsidian

Not quite the same thing as selling a product with a well-known fatal flaw, and not recalling it...

#

And when someone asks for a warranty replacement, replacing it with a device that has the same problem as the original unit...

winged obsidian
#

Where is lead solder completely banned? In the US, it's only required to bear a prominent label stating that it's illegal to use on plumbing for human consumption.

subtle pasture
#

"Sorry we messed up your order sir, here's an identical (also bad) replacement!"

Adds about 20 horsepower when you're running on E85. Also burns through fuel about 20% faster. lol

clear ferry
#

Saab was engineered specifically for e85

subtle pasture
#

But that's mostly because alcohol is significantly less energy-dense than gasoline

#

I want to install a flex-fuel kit so I don't have to flash the ECU to change fuel types

orchid rose
#

Requires a different air-to-fuel mixture as well so it's not always that great for older engines

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, everything in this car is happy with E86, it just doesn't come stock with a fuel mixture sensor.

#

Add that, update the ECU firmware, and you're golden

orchid rose
#

I only read up on that recently. I was always wondering why when the 95E5 came out, some cars lost more performance than that 5%...

#

We just moved to 10% bio fuel now

#

Or E10

orchid rose
#

Yeah the E5 stuff was a long time ago. Just stuck to my mind

clear ferry

Apparently the rule of thumb is cars older than 2011 won't do good on E10

#

But the car park is changing so fast now to EV I don't know how much it matters

subtle pasture
clear ferry
#

2.9 million cars in Norway, 21% of them are EV

subtle pasture
#

EV has been slow to take off in the US due to much of the US being A) huge, and B) low population density

clear ferry
#

331% increase in EVs since 2017

forest edge
#

you like rollerskates? well we got good news.. you wnt something that is bigger than a shoebox then it's iffy lol

subtle pasture
#

I was mostly referring to cars. The most common electric vehicles around here (California) are Teslas

#

And there many, many, many times more hybrids than EVs running around. Priuses are everywhere

forest edge
#

think the tesla design just suits more than the other ev cars

#

like those chevy volts or the leaf are just bland

clear ferry
#

599k EVs registered, 198k chargeable hybrids, 149k non chargeable hybrids

#

So EVs are winning by a lot

subtle pasture
#

Even then, Tesla doesn't have the range to make it super useful outside of cities. They have enough range that I could make the 5 hour drive from my house to Los Angeles in a Tesla, and then be stranded there overnight (assuming I can find a place to plug it in to recharge).

#

And that's just traveling between two cities in the same state. I've driven to Seattle in Washington (two states over) before, and no EV could do that in one shot...

clear ferry
#

That's the great thing here, won't be more than 30km between chargers

#

And the majority of them are 150kw or more

forest edge
#

nothing beats gas

clear ferry
#

You can easily drive cross country with 1h stops here and there

subtle pasture
#

A few things beat gas on energy density, but they're nowhere near as safe or cheap as gasoline

orchid rose
#

nuclear is pretty good

clear ferry

static schooner
#

You've successfully electrified part of one state

subtle pasture
# static schooner

Population density is a more impressive figure:
15 per square Km for Norway.
98 per square Km for California.

clear ferry
#

Now do what you say you are so good at, be innovative

forest edge
#

if they can get ev trucks and suv's to be worth a shit, then you will start seeing a shift

subtle pasture
#

The issue is, most of that population density is concentrated in cities, leaving vast swathes of nothing in-between with zero infrastructure.

clear ferry
#

No need to being Missouri into this

forest edge
#

i would even consider an ev truck, but not one that's going to run out of juice after a few hours of towing a trailer lol

subtle pasture
#

The one place where EV trucks shine is rolling downhill. Regenerative breaking means extended runtime and less wear and tear on the actual breaks vs. traditional trucks.

#

If you're dealing with a lot of hills, there's a case to be made

clear ferry
#

Yeah, a lot of companies are looking at electric trucks now

#

Norway is basically 90% hills

forest edge
clear ferry
#

Just in my Leaf I get 4-5% battery back on a 1h drive to a customer across a mountain

subtle pasture
#

There's a niche for electric trucking, but it's not a big one.

clear ferry
#

Politically it might become a requirement for any inner city delivery here

forest edge
#

delivery services like amazon are already massively switching. i see them all the time

#

but those vehicles get swapped out for a fresh one mid day I believe

forest edge
#

anyone know of any kind of poe smart switch? like a passthrough that cuts power to the device. would be nice if it was powered off the poe rather than some seperate power supply. maybe wifi or zigbee or even bt controlled

subtle pasture
#

@forest edge Like, you want to be able to cut PoE power to a downstream PoE device?

#

Because most managed PoE network switches have port control, and can do that

clear ferry
#

I've never seen a managed Poe switch that couldn't

#

I can't count the number of times a person has thought that shutdown will kill the power though

subtle pasture
#

That said, the only managed network switch I know of that can be powered by PoE (PoE PD), while also providing PoE power to further downstream devices, is the Cisco SG250-10P

clear ferry
#

Never seen that, only heard of it

#

Then again, I mostly work with spine leaf stuff these days

#

Very little campus

subtle pasture
#

It can provide between 22w and 62w of PoE power for downstream devices, depending on how you power it.

#

Looks like the going rate for a used one is $200

#

Your other option would be to use a PoE injector to supply power to your target PoE device, and then control power to the injector with a smart plug.

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

What's supplying the PoE in the first place?

#

Switch or injector?

forest edge
#

switch but don't have control over the port

subtle pasture
#

@clear ferry We may have just found the first PoE switch without port control

#

@forest edge Is it unmanaged or something?

forest edge
#

it's a nvr, so it's not the first lol

subtle pasture
#

You sure you can't just enable SNMP and tell it to turn the port on/off over that?

forest edge
#

no access

subtle pasture
#

How much PoE power you need?

#

I might have a jank solution. lol

forest edge
#

well there are plenty of workarounds. just looking for something more compact and simple

#

can't be impossible for a device to be powered by the same poe it passes through while having the baility to cut power to the downstream via some means like BT or zigbee, wifi ect

#

just can't find a commercial product that does that

subtle pasture
#

I mean, I mentioned one: Cisco SG250-10P. But it kinda requires 60w PoE to power itself + downstream devices.

#

And it's a full 10-port managed PoE switch

forest edge
#

as of right now my only "small" solution is to put the whole NVR on a smart plug since rebooting the device doesn't cut power

#

i need 1 port in and 1 port out.. small lol

subtle pasture
#

PoE splitter + smart relay + PoE injector?

#

Is this passive PoE or an actual PoE standard?

forest edge
#

poe injector on a smart plug is a workaround, but that's not compact

#

since from what I read those injectors can work on a poe line without passing the power beyond them

subtle pasture
#

Also, can the endpoint run off of DC rather than PoE?

forest edge
#

yes

subtle pasture
#

Ooooh, solution then!

forest edge
#

but again, thats not compact

subtle pasture
#

That + a Shelly

forest edge
#

that requires there to be a plug at the location you install that

subtle pasture
#

Nope, not at all

#

That's a splitter, not an injector

forest edge
#

oh i see

subtle pasture
#

It gets PoE and splits it out to non-PoE ethernet and a DC power output

#

So you power both the Shelly and the camera off of the DC jack, and loop the power back through the Shelly's relay before it goes to the camera

#

Shelly always gets power, camera is switched

#

If both the camera and she shelly run off 12v this is going to be real easy ๐Ÿ‘€

forest edge
#

but not compact

subtle pasture
#

It's the size of a PoE splitter with a Shelly sitting on top of it...

#

Does it need to be smaller than a deck of playing cards?

#

The only real downside is you then need to run a seperate cable for DC from the Shelly to the camera

forest edge
#

there has to be something out there that is exactly what i am wanting. this right here is so close. just no passtrhough https://shop.m5stack.com/products/esp32-ethernet-unit-with-poe

wintry hazel
#

Hey, this is more about straight up electrical rather than automation; but does anyone here run a segment of their home on a completely separate off-grid power system? Iโ€™m an electrician and doing one for a public space where controversial infrastructure works cut off the feed to a clock and due to heritage areas it canโ€™t be easily reinstated, so since itโ€™s a very low draw we are doing off grid solar and Iโ€™m just like โ€œI could do a whole whole garden/outdoor watering and lighting project off this conceptโ€

forest edge
#

wouldn't solar driveway lights be the same thing?

wintry hazel
#

The drive way lights would be;

forest edge
#

when you say segment I think you are refering to like running a portion of stuff inside your home on solar vs grid, like fridge etc

#

anything outside and seperate I don't see as being anything diffrent than any traditional solar light or even those solar fountain pumps

wintry hazel
#

But Iโ€™m talking big, like if you have a full sized panel, MPPT charger, Deep cycle battery and are running a much bigger amount than a light or two

#

As I say, the job is to run a clock tower; but if it goes well enough I may do a pump, automated watering, security, and outdoor house and garden lighting all on a system calculated for that

forest edge
#

There should be lots of people in here who run their home off solar. it's essentially that. The way you had worded yourself before made it sound like you had something more complicated in mind

wintry hazel
#

Nah my home in general is fine with grid power and normal solar system I just kinda wanted to hear if someone is stoked on a particular brand.

forest edge
#

well that will vary on country and area I would think. I watch videos on solar all the time and like europe has shit we don't have access too and vice versa

#

i've seen some very basic setups to shit that just looks too complicated for what it's doing

wintry hazel
#

I guess I could have asked in hardware if I truly expected an mppt 12v charger might also be reportable in HA.
My dream home sold not long ago but it was on enough land that Iโ€™d want to not run power to a couple of applications

#

Voltage drop and whatnot

forest edge
#

go all in or not at all imo. between dealing with the grid and all the extra stuff to pull and feed back too, and the overall cost vs life expectancy and actual output.. just too much lol

wintry hazel
#

Yeah. Atm living alone in a small home my solar was feeding in enough that I was only paying a portion of the daily charge but recent politics and cost pressures have tripled my bill

forest edge
#

some places here in the states the power company really rips people. they do not get back for the same as they pull.

wintry hazel
#

Oh yeah thatโ€™s the same here. My feed in is about 4x my consumption

forest edge
#

basically giving free power back to the grid so it can be sold to your neighbors at x the rate lol

#

my ideal setup would be whole home with natural gas backup generator "just incase"

#

thankfully though when some part of a solar system starts to die the person seems to be aware of it before just total loss.. at least that's how it appears when i look this stuff up

wintry hazel
#

But yeah, we have water restrictions here too, and often no unmanned hoses or always on taps unless if you have the little sign that says โ€œay itโ€™s on rainwater tanksโ€

you are simply missing the fact, that bycicles arent comfortable to ride

You can spend effectively car money and they still lack basic features nowadays

If you don't ride one regularly I could see that though Oberfail

How do people think it's fine to spend good money on something which is worse than what you could get a decade ago

I have and it's not terrible with proper clothing

My colleague who just got divorced bought two bikes

I didn't know I was making such a controversial statement ๐Ÿคฃ

He got two for 6k?

Strange midlife crisis

#

They aren't even electric

finite atlas
#

Thats what you nowdays pay for "inexpensive" bicycles

solar zealot
#

Yea kinda true

clear ferry
#

They were used though

solar zealot
#

But electric sucks anyway

scenic radish
#

Wtf

#

I paid 300 USD for mine new lol

finite atlas
#

i like the somewhat regulated electric bikes we have in germany

solar zealot
#

Like for the price of a decent motorcycle or scooter you get the bare minimum to move around. And when you park it it gets stolen

finite atlas
#

even my brothers bare-minimum bicycle got stolen out of the locked basement

scenic radish
#

Bike theft is certainly an issue, I agree with that

finite atlas
#

Just modify your bike with some spicy electronics, so when someone tries to ride your bike, a LiveLeak banner appears above him shortly before he gets tazed by the bike.

I see, that's how electric bikes start making sense

I mean stuff like this is pretty great: https://twitter.com/JoePompliano/status/1696145554986639383

Over 100,000 people attended Sunday's Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.

But with event organizers closing public roads, 45,000+ people took bikes, and the rest used the train or bus.

This is what the parking lot looked like!

No other country could pull this off ๐Ÿ‘

Going to watch race cars go around the track with your bicycle may sound a bit weird but it makes a lot of sense

forest edge
#

the never finding your bike again or the being forced to use any other means of getting there aside from walking because someone closed down any access for motor vehicles?

glacial knot
orchid rose
#

You can't fit 45000 cars there but you can 45k bikes. And with just drop a GPS ping on your bike when you get there and you should find it easy enough

solar zealot
#

Or you just utilize the good ol brain to remember where you parked it

#

Kinda nice that people don't steal such stuff there

orchid rose
#

I'm sure bicycle theft is an issue around there as well but most people ride those cheap dutch bikes which aren't worth stealing

#

According to a report by the Dutch Cyclists' Union, approximately 500,000 bicycles are stolen in the Netherlands each year, which equates to about one bicycle stolen every minute

According to recent data, an average of 1 in 3 bikes in Amsterdam is stolen each year

forest edge

wasn't refering to stealing

solar zealot
#

I guess if it's cheap enough it doesn't matter

#

It's not like making a bike would be expensive and not heavily marked up

finite atlas
#

no no the 1000โ‚ฌ pricetag is barely marked up

scenic radish
#

I don't have to go far to get to most places I go on a regular basis

orchid rose
#

Right, that's what I thought. For rides like that even a cheap bike will do fine. If you want to do longer rides regularly the higher-priced options are more comfortable (materials/size-adjustments) and faster (=more fun)

finite atlas
#

Sure, if you want pure titanium handles, a platin frame and all the bells and whistles

orchid rose
#

For 1000โ‚ฌ you don't get that much. Depends on the type of bicycle you're trying to build and how much stuff you need

orchid rose
#

stuff like gears, brakes, curved handles, combined levers etc all add up very quickly

finite atlas
#

i still remember buying a bike in like 2010
it was 200โ‚ฌ and was more than enough, just a bit heavy for 8 year old me

forest edge

there are bicycles, mountain bikes and ev motorcycles here. pretty much the three types and you pay accordingly

Iirc this one cost about 1000โ‚ฌ to build myself 10 years ago. Chinese carbon frame and decent parts 1x11 gears

throw away bikes

orchid rose

It was a fun project

#

It doesn't even have disc brakes or fancy gear levers which would have been another few hundred euros

forest edge
#

atleast spring for an mtb so you can have options imo

#

those city asphalt only bikes are just trash

scenic radish
#

Yeah but mine has full wrap fenders so I look super cool riding it

orchid rose
#

That's not actually a road bike, it's a "cyclocross" which can handle terrain just fine as well, you just swap the tires

last cedar
#

Your fav @forest edge

scenic radish
#

The stock wheels and tires on my bike were absolute shit

#

Glad I replaced them

orchid rose
#

The thing with bicycles like with a lot of things is that they look pretty much exactly the same on the outside but there's a lot more to it. For example, my tires stopped getting punctures from random gravel once I bought ones that were just a bit more expensive. 15โ‚ฌ vs 25โ‚ฌ iirc. The cheaper ones use nylon or something as puncture proofing and the more expensive ones use kevlar

#

That one has Schwalbe and mine has Continental

#

both have been good

You can take any bike you see in public which is not locked as long as you leave it in a public place unlocked afterwards in austria. Completely legal

And even if you don't ride on the ice yourself, that gravel doesn't disappear when the ice melts so for a few months of the year all the roads are just covered by gravel

It gets better in the winter since snow isn't actually that slippery

ahh, no. brakes are a bit useless if not used lightly ๐Ÿ˜‰

Slowing down is for the weak anyway

orchid rose
#

There's literally like one hill where I live so I usually get away with it but there was one time where there's this longer downhill part. The rear wheel just immediately locked up and turned into a ski instead which made no difference to my speed so they only way to stop the bike was to throw it sideways which worked ๐Ÿ˜…
