Obviously beer gardens don't exist
And you're high on fumes
Or at least thats what Sonoma thinks
no we must call them something else because someone who has imitation pubs doesn't know what they are
I can't type the trend i am seeing whithout feeling @clever mortar 's wrath
well comprehension is different for everyone, it's ok
keep your beer gardens and pansy pubs.. even the lower tier's need some place to hang out
everytime i give go2rtc a chance it just frutsrates me
there, I did the Google thing
and some "best of" lists: https://travelinmissouri.com/kansas-city-breweries-with-a-beer-garden-or-patio/
case, rested. now get me a beer
from the garden
well it's gonna be argued that that article wasn't written by a native
but I'll gladly join you in the garden, with beer
there's a place that literally exists
oh I know
must be run by some furiner
zoomer gathering holes.. makes sense
I wouldn't be caught dead in any of those places. looks like daycare
daycare with beer is an interesting business proposition
drop off the kids, head to the garden, where there's beer
sure it's actual beer and not Zima?
I've seen a few Zima places that look like that.. they weren't called beer garden's either but the look fits
More like genius
serves German-style food such as pretzels, mustard, bratwurst, saurkraut, bier cheese, soup, and more
dont we all love to eat the > mustard and > soup dish
My boss and I were talking about Home Assistant in our 1:1 and I brought up HA is probably one of the only pieces of software I'm actually really excited to get updates for, and he shared that excitement. So many apps these days have nothing-updates that add nothing to the experience (or are just to shove more tracking or A/B tests in), but not HA! Every update is incredibly packed with really useful, fun, and polished features.
It's really a testament to everyone that works on Home Assistant that one can have such enthusiasm for a piece of software. It really is one of the most polished open source projects I've ever seen :)
Just thought I'd share some appreciation for all the contributors and community.
Pretty sure we even have said pigeon/ YouTuber in the discord @rough axle
I would love to know more about the pigeon experiment tbh
AMA!
a wild geerlinguy appears
Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck?
I did not read duck
It's easy to be mistead as buck
๐
Has anyone compared IPoAC to Waterfowl or Equine carriers?
A lot of eating in that duck...
IPoAC is nothing without proper QoS though
Alan cox did try it in bergen one year though
There's a paradigm shift. Previous tests have been based on comparing delivery by single avian carriers, ignoring "big sky bandwidth." There's a whole approach to QoS that hasn't been probed adequately through even statistical means. Which is all to say these experiments are by a bunch of flocking amateurs.
would this be achieved by weighing down the birds with cute little jackets lined with various different weights?
and routing protocols would be patches on their jackets kinda like biker gangs?>
I love it
The doves have a built in self defense system too, poop on demand
Oh hi mark I mean jeff
I mean
Pigeons also work when the power is off
Is the data sent by pigeons encrypted by default?
TFW our shitpost den turns into a literal discussion about shit
Story of my life
We canโt all have a datacenter at home like you tho
Smart shit happening
Actually, you can
You buy I build
To be fair I have one physical datacenter and six virtual ones
That is fair
When did Microsoft stop shipping drivers for Intel ethernet chipsets
Just didn't want to use the I225V
They stopped?
I had to plug in a usb realtek one to have it install the drivers for it
So I suppose they don't ship em (anymore)
Never had an issue on Intel ones in the past
I thankfully seldom install windows on bare metal anymore
Must be at least 6 years since last time
Do you even nvidia dlss 3.0 bro
LoL dlss
LoL novidia
Do you even vfio passthrough bro
Wonder if this is easier on thunderbolt
famous last words
Nothing is easier on thunderbolt
There's a reason thunderbolt isn't used by most people.
Yuck
๐คฎ at your yuck
DLSS is pretty yuck.
not for gaming
DLSS is crap.
I don't want to watch a computer's interpretation of detail when I could just look at the detail the the artist drew.
Also it makes things look soft and gives a lot of things weird effects if you look up close.
DLSS for videos is even worse imo
Windows didn't pick it up? That's annoying
well not if the driver doesn't ship with the OS and it's the 'network' card driver
I remember when no OS 'picked' up anything without drivers installed prior
my sweet summer children and their 'plug and play'
Windows is and has been pretty slow on actually getting drivers on the disc too.
Pretty common for hardware to be out for a year or two before it's on a disc
yeah it's so nice. There was this old type of printer I had to install for people and the drivers took 45 minutes every time
a lot of stuff just works nowadays
back in the day a 'new' printer didn't work LOL
You windows plebs
but having the os force you to be network connected during install yet it doesnt feel like having the right drivers to do that
kinda be somewhat annoyin
ummm mr, I hate to tell you but linux/unix was WORSE
you could have the driver and still need to recompile
so you hush Atx
Yea, Linux's support for consumer devices was complete garbage for a long time
I started off a BSD man
I've never had any major issues in Linux since 2004 tbh
Have any of you guys used ergotron stands?
The fact that NDISWrapper not only existed but was widely used is gross.
yeah you're talking about the summer, I grew up in the winter

Linux didn't reliably have support for non-generic features on devices until the like 2010s, and there's still a ton missing
I tried Linux for a good 6 months but eventually went back to Windows
you could get them, but with great pain and suffering
I've been running it part time since 1998, full time since 2015
Linux on a supported/compatible device you don't want to consume high quality media on is great.
But that limits it to like my work laptop
pulse audio :^) the solution to arguments because linux ppl simply dont hear em /s
As far as devices I actually interact with
It was nice during my senior year of computer science for all my projects, but once I graduated it just became more annoying for me to deal with and I got tried of booting into Windows everytime I wanted to use certain software
WINE?
Only time I boot windows is when I do Pearson Vue exams
I got somewhat into PulseAudio configs. For as much of a mess as it is It's pretty powerful once you get it set up right.
Because screw them
๐คฎ Pearson Vue
18 passed exams last year, 8 so far this year
You sound bored.
I get paid to have fun, and I enjoy validation of knowledge
I haven't taken any exams since HS, when I got my MCSA cert. Other than that I've just been riding on job performance to get where I am.
Maybe I should get some certs.
Helps getting a raise every 4 months because my boss is afraid I'm leaving when I get offers
I send her all my offers
If I did that my boss might start calling the places looking for a job there himself, and he's a good boss so I don't want him to go.

Although I did just get like 50h of work dumped on me because I'm the only guy on the team they want to do cluster deployments.
charge them a higher fee
50h overtime pay of course
Probably not going to go into overtime to get it done
So over two weeks then
Honestly I'm going to spend more time researching/drafting a proposal for some changes to the layout than actually doing the work
that's just normal o.0
I got a new monitor stand today I'm excited to set up ๐
Depends on the task. A lot of things I get are rather routine.
toil? Automate it!
I pretty much have it all automated
Asides from rca when servers go pop
But that's generally pretty quick
and there's always a new thing you don't have automated.
I thankfully don't do anything repetitive, so I have to figure out new stuff every time
The joys of working across 30+ product lines
With a couple of hundred different customer environments
And a lot of customers you can't even bring anything onsite
I do work across a few product lines but mainly focus on managing the clusters.
stop pressing your nose against the screen?
for what it does, it's actually very good
I mostly game on a 65" OLED, I don't need to press my nose against the screen to notice it
Are you really that unfamiliar with the concept of gaming on a TV in a livingroom?
unfamiliar with someone thinking they can complain about graphic clarity on a ginormous screen
no in misery video games are played in fields
I don't have any interlaced sources
pixels on tv's are generally not as packed. no matter what the graphics will always be less than par compared to the targeted devices things like dlss was designed for
The screen can do it, games can do it, it's just DLSS that stands in the way. I basically never need DLSS with my 4090 anyways though
Well I'm also sitting 3 or 4m away from the screen
I'm not right up on it
as i said dlss is actually very good at what it is meant for
earlier versions sucked granted
but i been using 3 on a bunch of games on a 27" with no issues at all and higher fps
I haven't really tried DLSS 3 since the DLSS 3 card I have is a 4090, but DLSS 2 was awful.
I hated DLSS2 on my 3070
I have a 3090ti for my office PC and a 4090 for my livingroom/VR setup
I used DLSS on a 3070 though
Since 2009 I've had gt240, hd5750, hd6850, gtx 970, rx5700, rtx 3070, rtx 3090ti, rtx 4090
I never really got top of the line ones until I got a VR setup and actually felt a need for it
And the 3090ti just has weird issues with displayport
Must have been the 5870 I had
Sonoma stuck in the 1990s I see
What else is new
I filed a chargeback on the 3090ti after a couple months of back and forth with nvidia's support and getting ghosted when I asked for a refund and they just never contested it or asked for it back. I had one purchased directly from nvidia.
location location location
I mean I was born so that's something ig
yea can't really appreciate it if all your memories only including crapping a diaper
y2k lol
Last decade kids still played outside
but those are like your current memories
Do they really not these days? Who here has kids?
my kid is almost an adult
and yes he played outside, so do all his cousins
When I was a kid I remember seeing kids everywhere, there'd be a couple out on each block every summer day. I don't see anything like that anymore.
Though there are also literally just less kids in my neighborhood too
They closed over half the elementary schools in the neighborhood I grew up in
Are you sure it's the kids and not just you? Also it would be slightly weird if you hang around the same places as kids
here you won't see kids out in the street playing in the day time, mostly they will be under a shade tree
but at dusk/night time they're all over
you have a raspberry pi
given this, your latest gpu is at least 2012
LIES
I'm sure mobile phones have changed things for young kids but I doubt it's that much
I'm more worried about the older kids that face social media
Maybe. There's a park 50' from my front door and other than the occasional person walking a dog it's always empty, and they closed the skate park down the road because nobody used it and it was falling into disrepair, they're going to repalce it with a community garden.
it's ok. human kind dosen't have much longer on this planet anyways
There was a blip when Pokemon Go was big that there were people everywhere again
Maybe they moved from skate parks to football โฝ fields?
Soccer has never been big here, real football has been shrinking in popularity for years.
it's kind of more region specific like hockey
Things like superbowl viewership are down like 25% from 2010
I'm sure you get the point though, that maybe the youth just has different outdoor activities that they are into
lol no
I'm not sure that's the case
I think it's more like they have more indoor options now
Why bike over to a friend's house when you can just toss on a headset?
Because it's more fun? I really don't know
It was more of a rhetorical question
Does anyone have any data to back any of these arguments?
We can just make it up as we go
you mean like intelligence declining over the last few decades they done studies for?
This is the internet sir
I apologize
It all started when cars got symbols
No, that's a completely different question
it kind of all goes together tho
No
I googled 'do kids play outdoors less' and was provided a ton of studies indicating that yes, they play less outside.
That's the extent of my citing sources though
I didn't get any smarter by kicking a โฝ with my mates. Probably the opposite tbh with the amount of times I was hit in the face
it has to do with what children find challenging and entertaining
Right, but yours were different from your parents as well I'm sure
why learn about nature when it's "boring"?
nowhere near the extent lol
it was like millennials completely dropped the ball
Wait, are you older than even us millennials? Not by that much?
don't get me wrong, a strong argument is made that tech is a major factor in the reasons
He's like 95
I mean you know how a computer works
He started on the eniac
i'm kind of immortal
Well that makes things easier since I can just post this meme
They didn't have memes in the 1960s
well there were actually
they just weren't online
They got the funniest smoke signals from the next village over

No no, I was very careful to choose 1960s and not the 70s since I know memes were coined by Dawkins
The concept of a meme is recognizable from before it was coined though
long before
As with a lot of things, it's obvious once someone thinks of it
I think we need an #angry-old-man channel
As long as I can troll on it
My kids play outside 8h a day in kindergarten, in all weather, I can attest they are outside
How old are they?
1 and 4
Adorable. Get back to us when they become unruly in a couple of years ๐
back in the day they included the measurements for gapping your own spark plugs in a car owners manual, now they have to tell you not to drink the battery acid
Uhuh
@forest edge this eel reminded me of you ๐
where is the remaining dish
You mean dishes? It was a revolving suhi place ๐
Must be on the belt somewhere else
I thought this is it
was that eel bred in a landlocked state too? or just old?
only if it keeps the kids off the grass!
You mean land of "River Beaches"? ๐คฃ
I can't believe, he said "we have beaches" without any shame.
well, I'm a beach snob as we all know
if I can't see down to 200' I'm not getting in it
also I'm used to powder pure sand
not pebbles/rocks
I got sandy loam in my backyard, so there.
Maybe you would have more luck with IP over Fish rather than pigeon
well maybe, but turtles are way more reliable
besides that would only work if I was actually at that house most of the time
I live and work on the main island mostly
and I don't have a beach here LOL
Be careful mowing your backyard, that's apparently gotten dangerous
Coyotes are pretty friendly
Is that because you threaten to cook them if they're not?
It's been ages since I got the chance to mow
she aint a lady if she aint 280

so glad to know vomit reminds you of me
๐คฎ
It's all love
and chunks
It's always strange when you start cooking and pass out on the couch and wake up to burning shishito peppers.
fumes from gross food tends to do that
you may as well go into the garage and wiff gasoline
so I'm not the only one who does that
that's half the reason I'm elbow deep in python hacking up a raspberry pi for a reminder system for the stove LOL
I think its quite normal. ๐คฃ
don't you mean orange pi? didn't think you bahamians had access to anything non citrus
The thing with shishitos is about one in ten is extra hot, and there's no way to tell which one
I keep telling you, we get more things than you do in muurica
being in a grey market is great, we can buy US, JDM, European cars and it doesn't matter
btw @forest edge I got raspberries growing
think you mean european spindle
Although, everything is better with some Furikake
Super blue moon yesterday
its ok, we won't judge you on your color blindness
I thought I saw a comet, but it was a cat hair
Was that taken on a Samsung phone?
'cause that photo looks like Samsung's stupid AI moon upscaling bullshit
Looks like you're taking a picture of the moon. Here's a nice picture of the moon!
Apparently this feature actually was documented, too, it was just only conveyed in Korean to Korean customers.
Most good photos of the moon do, that's sort of the point of the feature.
I usually shut off the AI features pretty quick though personally.

So I have an hp ellitedesk g4 mini that's been freezing up more and more often; requiring a physical reset. Finally scanned the ram, and bought some new sticks.
I got 1 error on the standard 4 pass with 2 16gb sticks. However, both individually pass in both slots.
How much should I worry about this?
has anyone managed to get an alexa dot with a toshiba tv working together? granted, the skill reviews are pants, however, they have to work, right?!
Steps I took:
Linked TV in my Amazon account via a code; Added the skill to Alexa App; Looked in the Alexa App to see the "linked" TV is unavailable/offline; When I tell Alexa to search for devices, 2 new ones come up, the app thinks the TV is a light, and they're still offline/disabled/unavailable.
Yes and I usually don't care to keep a tab of the crater count. ๐ It's just the moon for me
Obligatory fuck amazon
Give Bezos more money, he doesn't have enough
Not enough yachts!
More registration income for the Bahamas!
My solution is usually to integrate the target device with HomeAssistant, and then expose the device to Alexa using either Emulated Hue or the HomeAssistant skill.
That way, when Alexa inevitably has an issue (like a skill randomly becoming disconnected), it's a single skill to fix rather than a dozen.
I swear, Alexa is getting worse at pretty much everything. Google Home doesn't seem to be any better, either.
https://old.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/166mi3j/amd_x_pcmr_starfield_worldwide_giveaway_win_a/ make sure to enter to win a fancy amd cpu+gpu
i'll only take one of them off your hands as a thanks for linking this when you win
protip: dont give amazon or google access to a microphone inside your home
It is. My theory is that as they try to expand the vocabulary of what it can do its accuracy deciding what you want it to do decreases. As it stands, the fallback if it's confused is to read a random wikipedia article based on whatever word it thinks it heard.
throws Android phone out the window
The fallback for me seems to be "choose a random light to turn on instead of the one I asked for"
I think hard about light names to keep them distinct. It helps a little.
Strictly speaking, my preferred smartphone OS was Windows Phone. I have a fundanemtal disagreement with how Apple does both hardware and software, so I'm literally only using Android due to a lack of any other options...
ew
ultimately there's a pick your poison decision that everyone has to make, however, google is literally an ad company and using their hardware and or OS is fucking gross
and amazon.. well somehow they managed to be even worse
apple is just anti competitive, anti consumer, and overpriced
It's amazing how crap Android runs on hardware that's 4x more powerful than a Lumia 950
Culture shock was moving from a phone that ran buttery smooth with 5 days of battery life to an Android phone with much, much, much better specs... that performs worse and is lucky to last 36 hours on a charge.
weird my pixel 3 still gets almost a week out of it's original battery
I've had an LG G3, LG G6, and now a LG v35. At their best they get about 2 days of battery life.
I'm looking into getting a Sony Xperia One IV, and the battery life on that also seems to be about 2 days at best.
all LG phones.. maybe it's not android? lol
Nah, nothing to do with LG.
sure sure
I ran non-stock roms on both the G3 and G6, no change in battery life.
I didn't bother on the V35 because LG's version of Android is already pretty much just AOSP + a few bundled LG apps.
It's not like Samsung's garbage where the stock rom is an unusable Apple clone
I kept buying LG because LG consistently offered a non-bloated Android experience on phones that retained a MicroSD card slot, headphone jack, no screen notch, and Qi charging, all in one package.
Yea, I'm mildly annoyed by my Pixel's battery life
got 2 pixel 3's in this house. one was replaced under warranty due to port issues but both phones been trucking fine with battery usage all this time. mine i've had since it was released
It's worth mentioning that the LG G3 and the original Pixel are basically the same phone. lol
Slightly different shell and slightly different stock roms. Both were made by LG.
I have the 6. But only for another 2 months ๐คท
My girlfriend stopped buying pixels after she had to get one warranty replaced 4 times. Same failure every time (the phone would start flaking out and eventually bootloop to death)
Each phone lasted about 11 months before the issues started.
which one was it? I've read like the 4 or 5 had some issue but it was a manufacture issue not a design issue
It's the same issue that killed my G3: the switch to lead-free solder.
that's The Bahamas ๐
Same thing that killed a lot of GeForce 8 graphics cards, as well
hasn't lead solder been ban for like 20 years?
define banned.
lol geforce 8?
You mean the bahamas
@forest edge GeForce 8000 series, aka the Tesla series of cards.
as in sold to bahamaians at a discount
I have pre-ban solder.
You can also still buy it somewhat easily
no, it's a place so it's The Bahamas.
And yes, leaded solder has been banned for quite a while. The issue is, the lead-free formulations that replaced leaded solder were also crap for a good long while.
Sorry, mentally switched at the same time as moving from the Ukraine to Ukraine.
confused. you saying you disliked the original pixel and never went back because it's issues like 20 years ago?
somewhat ironically, lead solder is still used in health care appliances
So we had a good 5 to 8 years of hardware that's just doomed to failure because the lead-free solder they used was terrible
nah, that implies respecting it as entity ๐
We never bothered with the Pixel line again because Google was ass about the replacement every single time, and kept giving us phones with the SAME hardware fault.
They should have issued a recall
lol
I don't disrespect where you live, so it's not really that hard is it?
i get stubborn over things too. I once got food poisoning at a local joint and never went back, regardless how people tell me how good the place has been for the past 10 or so years
Not quite the same thing as selling a product with a well-known fatal flaw, and not recalling it...
And when someone asks for a warranty replacement, replacing it with a device that has the same problem as the original unit...
Where is lead solder completely banned? In the US, it's only required to bear a prominent label stating that it's illegal to use on plumbing for human consumption.
"Sorry we messed up your order sir, here's an identical (also bad) replacement!"
That doesn't make it better...
I believe in Misery it's still sold as a topping for paint chips.
Most electronics in the US have switched to lead-free solder, except for special use-cases where lead-free alternatives still aren't up to scratch.
That's definitely true, but not the same as an outright ban.
RoHS certification requires lead-free solder
The EU mostly bans it, but still has some broad-ish exemptions
I just needed to know it wasn't time to start panic-buying.
I don't know you, the jabs won't land quite the same. give it time
Leaded solder can still be freely purchased and used for hobbyist electronics and repairs, so you're good
I keep a spool of it around for repairing really old electronics, because mixing leaded and lead-free isn't a great idea
That's fine, I'm not going anywhere
old person alert
๐ด
That's old? Uh oh.
It's great for electronics /and/ it's a delicious dessert topping!
Don't forget to clean your teeth with Radium toothpaste
Got a new monitor stand
i did something stupid and have no idea how to resolve it
got an lxc volume which somehow ended up on the wrong disk filling it completely
moving this to another one doesnt seem to work and neither does starting the vm to remove some stuff
is there any way for me to both keep the data and move it over?
hm looks like i cant move mountpoints at all
That's pretty slick. Ergotron?
Automate it now! ๐
Not sure how often I'd want to move my triple-monitor setup around, though. Maybe if my desk were sit/stand
yep!
Lol, of course it's ergotron. Smooooth
I mainly like the floating design and how much desk space I have now
It's a bit off-topic for them, but the guys on Reddit /r/datarecovery/ might have ideas. They're definitely experts with https://www.hddsuperclone.com/.

do you watch nfl? or any other sports? https://github.com/vasqued2/ha-teamtracker you have automations setup with rgb(w) bulbs or light strips around the house reacting to scores of games or who has possession of the ball or touchdowns?
No sports.

well
there is always https://github.com/awawa-dev/HyperHDR

bro everyone has their own, what you think we short on coconuts?
skill to create the legend board
maybe in Misery you'd have to share a coconut
Does this count?
no, that's just ambient tv lighting. nothing special about that.
Youโre right, letโs compare your non special reactive lighting
face it. ambient tv lightning is just RGB for your PC. and we see how that is going
nah man it's pretty immersive irl
just means your tv is too small
I do have ledfx running allover. TV back lights are elementary
Finally home for 3 days, time to add more subs to the back yard.
don't want to see any sand on the ground huh? just speakers
Got them few months ago didn't get a chance to put them in. Gotta dig 3' holes ๐
Easy with that sand.
you know wireless headphones would be cheaper and sound better right?
When they start performing well in water one day
they make waterproof headphones. under the water isn't going to sound any diffrent that listening to speakers above lol

Hey
recieved a warning from ISP that something in my network is port scanning
ideas on how to detect
Especially considering how few consumer ISP customers would know what a port scan is.
Unless they mean its port scanning the internet, plenty of automatic tools that would flag to the ISP for that
ISPs in general donโt care. Especially on private lines imo
If he would port scan the whole internet probably nobody cares, its just getting throttled to ๐
Some may though
Get enough abuse emails sent to the ISP and you'll probably get an email
when you open a webshop, and it asks if you shop from that country in the EU
and you say yes
and half of the products just vanish
No lead solder for you!
Got an email from my ISP about one of my switches pushing through discovery stuff. They seem to scan what's up there
Well that's what I thought as well but they even pointed out which device it was
Since then I do be a little scared
tell that the 2kg in my basement!
leave me and my sweet tasting solder alone
Its a date ๐ฅฐ

how did you figure that out?

I'd be so tempted to throw a bunch of non-rechargeable lithium AA's on a charger and leave it plugged in there
Dumping voltage into something like a cr2032 makes a pretty good pop without actually causing damage
On the flipside I saw photos of someone trying to recharge some 2600mAh 3.7v 14500 Li-SOCLโ cells and there was a pretty big chunk of the charger missing afterwards
i can give you a 18650 cell that is guranteed to cause some little drama, ask my cermaic sink with a small 18650 inprint
I think every single time I try to set up autofs on a new Linux machine I end up with an executable auto.nfs by accident (probably copied some executable file to use as a template) and it takes me forever to realize that a file that just lists mountpoints must not be executable or autofs tries to execute it as a script and fails
the resulting logs are utterly useless in figuring out what's wrong
Don't think I've ever dabbled with autofs
I don't know if it's any better than a static mount, but I like the magic of it
It's like a Directory of Requirement from Harry Potter - you ask for it and it's just there!
I usually just do fstab, then cry when boot hangs because I forgot about required fields
I guess that's one advantage. it's only mounted when it's accessed
and then unmounted if it's not in use after a while
I think the number is now over 90% automatic in Norway
Correlation to 85%+ EV sales probably
did any recent caddy update break how they handle stuff? somehow both client and remote_ip point to the container itself which breaks effectively everything
Nope. I hate manuals
Too painful if I'm in traffic
No need for a manual anyway
The joke now is that you have to pay more and wait longer to be able to shift slower and have a higher 0-60
Used cars in Aus are more auto than manual, so manuals cost more
Finding a worthwhile manual in the US is near impossible anymore.

What's hilarious is auto-insurance rates are actually cheaper on manual cars around here, because they're stolen significantly less often <_<
Stealing proof
It pays to be a car theif who can drive stick, I guess
i dont think so, because manual cars sell for less, dont they?
When I grew up probably 49/50 did drivers licence for manual, now I don't think anyone does it
They sell for less for the same reason they're stolen less: Fewer people can drive them.
i'll officially do in a few months and inofficially already do learn to drive manual
or maybe it's because people who drive automatic are bad drivers ๐ค
this simply can not be, people that learn less how to drive a car sure drive better!
I currently have one of those hybrid systems where it has an automatic transmission, but you can pop it over into manual/sequential mode and wind out gears all you want.
Had to look up the actual numbers, in 2018 only 18% did automatic transmission drivers licence, in 2021 the number was 51%
I'm guessing it is up since then
Also enables the paddle shifters ๐
down-shifting into a corner with paddle shifters always feels pretty good, not gonna lie
All my cars from MY2000 and newer with automatic transmission has had manual mode, isn't that normal in the US?
As a racing-fan I'm very much partial for paddle shifters. Best of both worlds
Nope, plenty of cars only have park, reverse, neutral, and drive...
Last time I saw that was early 90s mercedes
My girlfriend's car is like that. I get annoyed every time I drive it because I keep grasping for the non-existent paddle shifters. lol
I've had paddles on two cars, hardly ever used it, and the transmission in the Volvo is so smooth I'd probably never use it if I had it
A hire car I had a while back had paddles, as it was a sports convertible it made for a fun, and license risking, drive

I drive a 2013 Toyota GT86, so that explains their presence in my car. lol
Like when I put the Volvo in sport mode, 410bhp available in two engines, and lowers the vehicle 5cm
GT86, this guy is a nerd
i just dont feel like spending 40k for a car
when i can have more fun with a shitbox that costs 2k
Gal, even ๐
Yaaas queen
Great car, though it can get expensive to drive (requires premium).
I have mine flashed to run on E85 right now ๐
The Swedes love e85
Adds about 20 horsepower when you're running on E85. Also burns through fuel about 20% faster. lol
Saab was engineered specifically for e85
But that's mostly because alcohol is significantly less energy-dense than gasoline
I want to install a flex-fuel kit so I don't have to flash the ECU to change fuel types
Requires a different air-to-fuel mixture as well so it's not always that great for older engines
Yeah, everything in this car is happy with E86, it just doesn't come stock with a fuel mixture sensor.
Add that, update the ECU firmware, and you're golden
I only read up on that recently. I was always wondering why when the 95E5 came out, some cars lost more performance than that 5%...
Yeah the E5 stuff was a long time ago. Just stuck to my mind
Apparently the rule of thumb is cars older than 2011 won't do good on E10
But the car park is changing so fast now to EV I don't know how much it matters
That's assuming the injectors in those older engines are even capable of squirting enough fuel for E86 to work.
2.9 million cars in Norway, 21% of them are EV
EV has been slow to take off in the US due to much of the US being A) huge, and B) low population density
331% increase in EVs since 2017
Also, big oil has to lobbylobby
not to mention the actual tech just isn't refined for every vehicle type
you like rollerskates? well we got good news.. you wnt something that is bigger than a shoebox then it's iffy lol
Gotcha
I was mostly referring to cars. The most common electric vehicles around here (California) are Teslas
And there many, many, many times more hybrids than EVs running around. Priuses are everywhere
think the tesla design just suits more than the other ev cars
like those chevy volts or the leaf are just bland
599k EVs registered, 198k chargeable hybrids, 149k non chargeable hybrids
So EVs are winning by a lot
Even then, Tesla doesn't have the range to make it super useful outside of cities. They have enough range that I could make the 5 hour drive from my house to Los Angeles in a Tesla, and then be stranded there overnight (assuming I can find a place to plug it in to recharge).
And that's just traveling between two cities in the same state. I've driven to Seattle in Washington (two states over) before, and no EV could do that in one shot...
That's the great thing here, won't be more than 30km between chargers
And the majority of them are 150kw or more
nothing beats gas
You can easily drive cross country with 1h stops here and there
A few things beat gas on energy density, but they're nowhere near as safe or cheap as gasoline
nuclear is pretty good
But yeah, a car that can only drive 5 to 7 hours before it konks out and needs an overnight recharge is... not super appealing to a lot of americans
Overnight charging would be home charging
Most modern stuff can do 40m 10-90%
Or charging anywhere there isn't an official charger, like most of the empty countryside in the US. lol
The us needs to adapt, dial up is so out of fashion
Begging a random gas station rest stop that's 50 miles from the nearest town to use a wall outlet sounds... not fun
Most gas stations in southern Norway are replacing 1/3 of their pumps with ev charging now
Yes
no matter how many times people have to remind those little countries, they seem to intentionally forget
Population density is a more impressive figure:
15 per square Km for Norway.
98 per square Km for California.
Now do what you say you are so good at, be innovative
if they can get ev trucks and suv's to be worth a shit, then you will start seeing a shift
The issue is, most of that population density is concentrated in cities, leaving vast swathes of nothing in-between with zero infrastructure.
No need to being Missouri into this
i would even consider an ev truck, but not one that's going to run out of juice after a few hours of towing a trailer lol
The one place where EV trucks shine is rolling downhill. Regenerative breaking means extended runtime and less wear and tear on the actual breaks vs. traditional trucks.
If you're dealing with a lot of hills, there's a case to be made
Yeah, a lot of companies are looking at electric trucks now
Norway is basically 90% hills
what case? you could spending 3/4 time going down hill and still run out of juice before you make it to location B
Just in my Leaf I get 4-5% battery back on a 1h drive to a customer across a mountain
I already stated the case. lol
There's a niche for electric trucking, but it's not a big one.
Politically it might become a requirement for any inner city delivery here
delivery services like amazon are already massively switching. i see them all the time
but those vehicles get swapped out for a fresh one mid day I believe
anyone know of any kind of poe smart switch? like a passthrough that cuts power to the device. would be nice if it was powered off the poe rather than some seperate power supply. maybe wifi or zigbee or even bt controlled
@forest edge Like, you want to be able to cut PoE power to a downstream PoE device?
Because most managed PoE network switches have port control, and can do that
I've never seen a managed Poe switch that couldn't
I can't count the number of times a person has thought that shutdown will kill the power though
That said, the only managed network switch I know of that can be powered by PoE (PoE PD), while also providing PoE power to further downstream devices, is the Cisco SG250-10P
Never seen that, only heard of it
Then again, I mostly work with spine leaf stuff these days
Very little campus
It can provide between 22w and 62w of PoE power for downstream devices, depending on how you power it.
Looks like the going rate for a used one is $200
Your other option would be to use a PoE injector to supply power to your target PoE device, and then control power to the injector with a smart plug.
yea looking for something inline though
switch but don't have control over the port
@clear ferry We may have just found the first PoE switch without port control
@forest edge Is it unmanaged or something?
it's a nvr, so it's not the first lol
You sure you can't just enable SNMP and tell it to turn the port on/off over that?
no access
well there are plenty of workarounds. just looking for something more compact and simple
can't be impossible for a device to be powered by the same poe it passes through while having the baility to cut power to the downstream via some means like BT or zigbee, wifi ect
just can't find a commercial product that does that
I mean, I mentioned one: Cisco SG250-10P. But it kinda requires 60w PoE to power itself + downstream devices.
And it's a full 10-port managed PoE switch
as of right now my only "small" solution is to put the whole NVR on a smart plug since rebooting the device doesn't cut power
i need 1 port in and 1 port out.. small lol
PoE splitter + smart relay + PoE injector?
Is this passive PoE or an actual PoE standard?
poe injector on a smart plug is a workaround, but that's not compact
since from what I read those injectors can work on a poe line without passing the power beyond them
Also, can the endpoint run off of DC rather than PoE?
yes
Ooooh, solution then!
but again, thats not compact
TP-Link PoE Splitter | 802. 3af Compliant | Gigabit Port | 5/9/12V DC Power Output | Up to 100 meters(325 feet) (TL-PoE10R). The PoE Splitter TL-POE10R fully complies with IEEE 802.3af standard, and can work with all IEEE 802.3af compliant PoE switches and PoE Injector such as TP-LINKโs TL-POE150...
That + a Shelly
that requires there to be a plug at the location you install that
oh i see
It gets PoE and splits it out to non-PoE ethernet and a DC power output
So you power both the Shelly and the camera off of the DC jack, and loop the power back through the Shelly's relay before it goes to the camera
Shelly always gets power, camera is switched
If both the camera and she shelly run off 12v this is going to be real easy ๐
but not compact
It's the size of a PoE splitter with a Shelly sitting on top of it...
Does it need to be smaller than a deck of playing cards?
The only real downside is you then need to run a seperate cable for DC from the Shelly to the camera
there has to be something out there that is exactly what i am wanting. this right here is so close. just no passtrhough https://shop.m5stack.com/products/esp32-ethernet-unit-with-poe
PoESP32 Unit is an Ethernet ESP32 lan Unit supports PoE. This module adopts ESP32 as built-in MAC, and IP101G as physical layer transceiver. Default firmware with ESP-AT, supports TCP,MQTT, HTTP protocols. It can connect to server with simple AT commands through serial port, achieving data transmission and remote control functions.

californian reporter states those who escaped state are unhappy.. how original lol
title might as well been, "Butt hurt californian citizens cry over others finding happiness in a different state"
The article actually cites US postal service data to determine that a shitload of people are moving out of Austin, TX...
Seems like people aren't happy there. lol
prob local just trying to get away from the tree huggers
Austin is one of the most liberal cities in texas. The locals are the tree huggers >_>
My sister lives there
sure it still dosen't hold a candle to the least liberal city in california tho
You underestimate how conservative some places in California are. We're home to 50% of those "State of Jefferson" whackos.
The ones who want to lop off a chunk of California and Oregon and form a new deep-red state.
it's the ratio of who is in power that counts
I mean, if you don't want to count those northern areas, there's also Bakersfield and Fresno. Both are conservative, even compared to Austin, Tx.
Hell, we have Oakdale, CA, which has an active feud going with with both Bandera and Stephenville, Tx over who's the actual "Cowboy Capitol of the World". It's always fun being stuck in rodeo traffic in the middle of California...
all that says is you have lunatics and noone has ever disputed that
We also have a large amount of conservative areas thanks to the entire central valley being agricultural.
I'm not sure where people got the idea that California is this solid blue monolyth
Faux News?
During the pandemic I saw a decent amount of news from Republican enclaves in California having very different policies than most of California.
Hey, this is more about straight up electrical rather than automation; but does anyone here run a segment of their home on a completely separate off-grid power system? Iโm an electrician and doing one for a public space where controversial infrastructure works cut off the feed to a clock and due to heritage areas it canโt be easily reinstated, so since itโs a very low draw we are doing off grid solar and Iโm just like โI could do a whole whole garden/outdoor watering and lighting project off this conceptโ
wouldn't solar driveway lights be the same thing?
The drive way lights would be;
when you say segment I think you are refering to like running a portion of stuff inside your home on solar vs grid, like fridge etc
anything outside and seperate I don't see as being anything diffrent than any traditional solar light or even those solar fountain pumps
But Iโm talking big, like if you have a full sized panel, MPPT charger, Deep cycle battery and are running a much bigger amount than a light or two
As I say, the job is to run a clock tower; but if it goes well enough I may do a pump, automated watering, security, and outdoor house and garden lighting all on a system calculated for that
There should be lots of people in here who run their home off solar. it's essentially that. The way you had worded yourself before made it sound like you had something more complicated in mind
Nah my home in general is fine with grid power and normal solar system I just kinda wanted to hear if someone is stoked on a particular brand.
well that will vary on country and area I would think. I watch videos on solar all the time and like europe has shit we don't have access too and vice versa
i've seen some very basic setups to shit that just looks too complicated for what it's doing
I guess I could have asked in hardware if I truly expected an mppt 12v charger might also be reportable in HA.
My dream home sold not long ago but it was on enough land that Iโd want to not run power to a couple of applications
Voltage drop and whatnot
go all in or not at all imo. between dealing with the grid and all the extra stuff to pull and feed back too, and the overall cost vs life expectancy and actual output.. just too much lol
Yeah. Atm living alone in a small home my solar was feeding in enough that I was only paying a portion of the daily charge but recent politics and cost pressures have tripled my bill
some places here in the states the power company really rips people. they do not get back for the same as they pull.
Oh yeah thatโs the same here. My feed in is about 4x my consumption
basically giving free power back to the grid so it can be sold to your neighbors at x the rate lol
my ideal setup would be whole home with natural gas backup generator "just incase"
thankfully though when some part of a solar system starts to die the person seems to be aware of it before just total loss.. at least that's how it appears when i look this stuff up
But yeah, we have water restrictions here too, and often no unmanned hoses or always on taps unless if you have the little sign that says โay itโs on rainwater tanksโ
So with a tank and solar you can do whatever you like with fancy irrigation and stuff
i run the entire house somewhat off-grid
Anyone remember what this two slots are called with the two end screws? Its two undocumentated slots on my router
It is mini pcie
that makes sense!
idk why netgear put a lot of stuff on their routers like sim slots etc without documentating it
Because they can reuse it for other products
And don't have to document it because it is protected IP probably
Love when a recruiter contacts me saying he has an exciting offer, and I tell him what I want, he says that would be impossible and I need to lower my expectations, and I tell him it is barely more than I have today

Maybe y'all need to up your offers
๐
Recently got an "exiting offer" from some recruiter
And every single thing they said was worse than my current place...
All I want is 100% WFH from a non capital location and 20% raise
The latter I will get at my current job if I just finish my promotion presentation
Id also get exiting if id happen to hire people for a steal. They ain't lyin :^)
Exciting for them isn't exciting for me
Just don't forget to put the card under the standoff and just smash it

But we can't have nice things
Talking about a monster pc the size of a credit card and saying "can't have nice things" in the same sentence ๐คฃ
But I do understand
"nice"
They do be pretty bad but for a simple backup solution to a random usb enclosure
Why not
Just plug a random usb enclosure to your proxmox box and back it up that way

Facts
Well bikes got significantly worse in recent times
Horrible people running everything
How so?
you are simply missing the fact, that bycicles arent comfortable to ride
I don't have an issue ๐คทโโ๏ธ
there's a bot in #general-archived
I was about to get something larger
You can spend effectively car money and they still lack basic features nowadays
Like lights
If you don't ride one regularly I could see that though Oberfail
How do people think it's fine to spend good money on something which is worse than what you could get a decade ago
have fun riding one in not great weather conditions
I have and it's not terrible with proper clothing
I didn't know I was making such a controversial statement ๐คฃ
Only $6000 total
Thats what you nowdays pay for "inexpensive" bicycles
Yea kinda true
They were used though
But electric sucks anyway
i like the somewhat regulated electric bikes we have in germany
Like for the price of a decent motorcycle or scooter you get the bare minimum to move around. And when you park it it gets stolen
even my brothers bare-minimum bicycle got stolen out of the locked basement
Bike theft is certainly an issue, I agree with that
Just modify your bike with some spicy electronics, so when someone tries to ride your bike, a LiveLeak banner appears above him shortly before he gets tazed by the bike.
I see, that's how electric bikes start making sense
What kind of distances do you ride?
cyclist.. gross
I mean stuff like this is pretty great: https://twitter.com/JoePompliano/status/1696145554986639383
Over 100,000 people attended Sunday's Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort.
But with event organizers closing public roads, 45,000+ people took bikes, and the rest used the train or bus.
This is what the parking lot looked like!
No other country could pull this off ๐

Going to watch race cars go around the track with your bicycle may sound a bit weird but it makes a lot of sense
the never finding your bike again or the being forced to use any other means of getting there aside from walking because someone closed down any access for motor vehicles?
goes as fast and far as you go
that's why other methods are seen as freedom ๐
You can't fit 45000 cars there but you can 45k bikes. And with just drop a GPS ping on your bike when you get there and you should find it easy enough
Or you just utilize the good ol brain to remember where you parked it
Kinda nice that people don't steal such stuff there
I'm sure bicycle theft is an issue around there as well but most people ride those cheap dutch bikes which aren't worth stealing
According to a report by the Dutch Cyclists' Union, approximately 500,000 bicycles are stolen in the Netherlands each year, which equates to about one bicycle stolen every minute
According to recent data, an average of 1 in 3 bikes in Amsterdam is stolen each year
wasn't refering to stealing
Well it says stolen doesn't it
so you buy a new bike, which gets stolen, so you decide to buy a cheap "used" bike someone else stole
ggwp
great economy
Gotta say, love my remarkable
ye it's a bit of a problem
Used it today to describe a migration plan for some servers
"a bit"
Great to be able to draw and highlight stuff
33% of getting your bike stolen per year
And take notes on the go
May as well call it a consumable product at that point
I guess if it's cheap enough it doesn't matter
It's not like making a bike would be expensive and not heavily marked up
no no the 1000โฌ pricetag is barely marked up
On a regular basis, usually no more than 1-2 miles / 1.6-3.2 km one way lol. I've done some 10+ mile / 16 km trips though
I don't have to go far to get to most places I go on a regular basis
Right, that's what I thought. For rides like that even a cheap bike will do fine. If you want to do longer rides regularly the higher-priced options are more comfortable (materials/size-adjustments) and faster (=more fun)
You'd be surprised
Sure, if you want pure titanium handles, a platin frame and all the bells and whistles
For 1000โฌ you don't get that much. Depends on the type of bicycle you're trying to build and how much stuff you need
Oh for sure
stuff like gears, brakes, curved handles, combined levers etc all add up very quickly
i still remember buying a bike in like 2010
it was 200โฌ and was more than enough, just a bit heavy for 8 year old me
there are bicycles, mountain bikes and ev motorcycles here. pretty much the three types and you pay accordingly
If you are stealing it, you could get quite much for 1000โฌ
I just have a basic 7-speed city bike. Works well for my needs and the occasional long trip
Speeds 6 and 7 rarely see use lol
aka he hits a curb the wheel flys off lol
I hate those, can't get up any hill ever without pain
Just live in a city with no hills anywhere 4head
indeed
Iirc this one cost about 1000โฌ to build myself 10 years ago. Chinese carbon frame and decent parts 1x11 gears
throw away bikes
It was a fun project
It doesn't even have disc brakes or fancy gear levers which would have been another few hundred euros
atleast spring for an mtb so you can have options imo
those city asphalt only bikes are just trash
Yeah but mine has full wrap fenders so I look super cool riding it
That's not actually a road bike, it's a "cyclocross" which can handle terrain just fine as well, you just swap the tires
Your fav @forest edge
What brand tires do you have
The thing with bicycles like with a lot of things is that they look pretty much exactly the same on the outside but there's a lot more to it. For example, my tires stopped getting punctures from random gravel once I bought ones that were just a bit more expensive. 15โฌ vs 25โฌ iirc. The cheaper ones use nylon or something as puncture proofing and the more expensive ones use kevlar
That one has Schwalbe and mine has Continental
both have been good
You can take any bike you see in public which is not locked as long as you leave it in a public place unlocked afterwards in austria. Completely legal
puncture from gravel? wtf lol
I'll have to check those out. I have Infinity Sport tires from Specialized. I like them a lot
Americans would use bikes if theyd have automatic gears :^)
When the roads get icy they put gravel on the roads to stop you from dying. That can at times be bad for tires
who the hell rides a bycycle on icy roads?
Finnish people
no comment
And even if you don't ride on the ice yourself, that gravel doesn't disappear when the ice melts so for a few months of the year all the roads are just covered by gravel
It gets better in the winter since snow isn't actually that slippery
i rode in a blizzard once... was fun to see the looks on the faces of the snowmobilers
That sounds like fun
with 1.5" wide tires too, not these "fat tire" stuff they have now ๐
Winter cycling on a road bike can be fun too but don't expect that the brakes do anything with slick tires
ahh, no. brakes are a bit useless if not used lightly ๐
Slowing down is for the weak anyway
There's literally like one hill where I live so I usually get away with it but there was one time where there's this longer downhill part. The rear wheel just immediately locked up and turned into a ski instead which made no difference to my speed so they only way to stop the bike was to throw it sideways which worked ๐
lol, i mostly did downhill-ish MTB, with regular MTB riding to get to the downhill parts ๐
Who's gonna make fun of me first
saddle bags??? ๐
get yer UberEats game on
Why would we, this is a fine bike with a lock probably opened in second by people on yt
That looks pretty awesome actually
and steel frames are quite comfortable too unless you have to carry them
i used a Camel-Bac, rather than saddle-bags ๐
Are there even big red styro cup holders for bikes
Thanks! I'm happy with it. Pretty great value for the price
i want to get one of these: https://konaworld.com/products/process-153-29 but i keep buying server parts and CNC machine parts instead ๐ฆ
Use the cnc to make a bike
it is a woodworking CNC
free money bug or something
damn, MTBs are expensive
BROWN handles and seat? ๐คก
They made due with wood wheels in the past:^)
Also solves the slipping in winter issue. The ride will end fast
also usually a CNC is only defined by it's blades ๐
most metal isn't cut at 24K RPM
Stock ๐
Haven't gotten around to replacing them
so you adjust the speed
Wouldn't it work at those speeds if you'd just move into the material slow enough
I have no idea
i thought it was for when the brakes don't work, like wearing the brown pants
