I dont think people understand how frustrating it in to go on a long rant of things todo

#

with not a clear path

subtle pasture
#

It can, but it runs better if you boot into Windows rather than SteamOS

primal laurel
#

at 60 FPS nonetheless

late gate
#

nice

solar zealot
#

ew windows on a console

#

what is this, a cash register

primal laurel
subtle pasture
solar zealot
#

its surprisingly good

glacial knot
subtle pasture
#

The Xbox also runs Windows (The Xbox's OS is built from Windows 10's branch of WinMain)

solar zealot
#

do people actually buy those

#

eh probably, they wouldnt exist otherwise

subtle pasture
#

Also seems like SteamOS still can't launch the original Crysis at all. You have to run the Remastered version (which is a separate purchase, even if you own the original)

glacial knot
#

well, "windows". I think it's most of NT, but a lot of the userspace stuff is different

subtle pasture
#

So you basically have to boot into Windows if you want to run the original Crysis 🤷‍♀️

primal laurel
#

that's fine, the original crysis was one of the worst optimized games of all time (which basically started the whole meme)

solar zealot
#

open an issue with proton :^)

subtle pasture
#

Eh, more like hardware wasn't optimized for the demands Crysis could dish out. If you ran it in DX9 mode (which is what hardware at time-of-release was highly competant at running) it actually ran pretty great.

#

DX10 mode introduced a lot of new effects, and Crysis launched into the frey of first-generation DX10 hardware. Not a great combination.

glacial knot
primal laurel
#

I couldn't really tell due to the constant stutters, but that was many years ago

#

anyway, there is no chance in hell I am ever going to run windows on this thing

glacial knot
#

I never played it when it was new. When I finally got hadware that could run crysis it was still the prettiest game I ever played though 🤷

solar zealot
#

sounds like people here aged well

subtle pasture
#

Looks like part of the reason Crysis doesn't work on SteamOS, but Crysis Remastered does, is because Remastered supports DirectX12 (which translates very well to Vulkan)

#

The Vulkan wrapper for DX10 (which is what the original Crysis wants to default to) isn't nearly as compatible or efficient

glacial knot
#

yea, if only intel wasn't dicks and upstreamed their patches to DXVK

primal laurel
#

Still waiting for my 1TB SSD though

steel crag
subtle pasture
#

The original Xbox is a bit of a weird edge case, actually. If you aren't running a game, it's running a highly modified Windows 2000. The moment you start a game, the game takes over the hardware wholesale, kicking the OS out of memory completely.

steel crag
#

yeah Crysis I think the only game I was very hyped for and then very disappointed

steel crag
#

I built my own EEPROM reader so I could just burn hdd's for em without bothering to softmod

subtle pasture
#

Just saying, if you have a game in the DVD-ROM drive and boot directly to the game disk, Windows never loads on the original Xbox

primal laurel
#

I though the original Xbox was based on windows NT

subtle pasture
#

Windows NT 5.0 (aka WIndows 2000)

#

The original Xbox's dashboard is Windows, but games don't run on top of the dashboard, they reboot the console and run directly on the hardware.

late gate
#

do any of you use logging (loki, ES, splunk, graylog etc) and monitors (zabbix, checkmk, LibreNMS etc) and what is best for your usecase?

steel crag

although very very stripped down

steel crag

steel crag
#

I need to buy a box of hdd's and get these damn xboxes out of my house

forest edge
#

are any of you even old enough to have played the original xbox?

subtle pasture
#

Yes, lol

forest edge
#

i went the ps route, but my cousin went the xbox route

subtle pasture
#

We had a PS2 and an original Xbox. The PS2 got a lot more play.

#

The Xbox was mostly used to play Halo, honestly

static schooner
#

I got an original Xbox just for XBMC

forest edge
#

the original halo on the first xbox was always the best

subtle pasture
#

I did play the shit out of Simpsons Hit and Run on the Xbox, though

forest edge
#

xbox in general was kind of shit compared to the ps back in those days, as for game selection etc

subtle pasture
#

The Xbox could technically push 1080i, but good luck decoding video at that resolution

forest edge
#

ps also allowed local lan of sorts to coop on diffrent tv's

#

which ws neat

#

at the time

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, the Xbox also did that. "System Link"

#

You could do multiplayer, multi-Xbox Halo matches using system link before Xbox Live even launched

forest edge
#

yea but the originl xbox was like early 2000's.. ps coined that in the mid 90's

#

that cable that linked two ps's together was not easy nor cheap to get ahold of either

subtle pasture
#

Eh? The PS2 and the xbox both launched in the early 00's

forest edge
#

i was refering to playstation.. as in the very first one lol

subtle pasture
#

Ah, the original PS1 link cable

late gate
#

Is it possible to spin down the fans in enterprise stuff like an UPS. Its so noisy I can hear it though a door. would it be an impossible job to restrict or change the fans?

subtle pasture
#

Strictly speaking, I think the first console to have a link cable was the SNES...

forest edge
#

i have every ps model here in boxes side from the ps5

subtle pasture
#

If you count running two GameBoy games in two SuperGameboy SNES cartridges (the SuperGameboy Rev2 had a link cable port)

forest edge
glacial knot
#

SNES had the sat uplink toy

subtle pasture
forest edge
#

h

#

ah

#

yea i only had the original. don't think i even ever seen any revisions

subtle pasture
#

There's a hardware mod for the original SuperGameboy that fixes the clockspeed and optionally adds the missing link cable port

forest edge
#

i would still have it too if some ex of mine hadn't stolen it

subtle pasture
solar zealot
#

could some of you help me understand some ldap relationship?
I can disable anonymous bind but that will not prevent anonymous access to the directory unless i also require auth
Except for that it might as unauthenticated bind is disabled by default?

forest edge
#

some of that gameboy stuff didn't come out till after most of the world moved on from those devices

#

some reason euros love to dwell on older tech and thus the demand remined high enough for the aftermarket mod stuff to come out

subtle pasture
#

Older host console + newer accessory. Weird.

#

Annoyingly, the SuperGameboy2 is probably still one of the best official ways to play GB/GBC games on the big screen.

forest edge
#

first and only handheld i ever bought was the ps1

primal laurel
subtle pasture
forest edge
forest edge
#

it's jkust ps1

subtle pasture
#

You mean the PSP?

forest edge
#

nm, the casde for it says ps1

#

psp

#

yes thats it

subtle pasture
#

Sony also launched a miniature version of the original PlayStation called the "PSOne", which had an optional LCD screen add-on:

forest edge
#

ws even wrong what was on the case lol

subtle pasture
#

Not quite portable, but close. lol

forest edge
#

ws very portable

#

even could wireless coop

subtle pasture
#

I was talking about the PSOne not being portable. The PSP absolutely was portable. lol

forest edge
#

is it strange i have all this old tech within almost arms reach? lol

subtle pasture
#

Nah, I have a Commodore Amiga in the other room

forest edge
#

i dunno why i had ps1 in the brain

subtle pasture
#

I got my childhood GBA out the other day to look into modding it, and found several old handhelds

#

Including this little guy, which apparently has persistent memory...

#

Batteries have been dead for 22+ years. Popped fresh ones in, and it picked right back up where I left off O.o

forest edge
#

i would still have my old pong console, atari, nes and super nintendo had i been more mature back in those days

#

i even sold my gamecube and n64

subtle pasture
#

Gotta love a Digivice having better save game storage than a Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal cartridge

forest edge
#

i had one those. didn't look like that

#

hatachi or i don't remember the name

subtle pasture
#

There were several generations of them, and re-releases

#

This is an original Gen1 from 1999

forest edge
#

you had to like feed it and pay attention to it

subtle pasture
#

It has a step-counter in it, too

forest edge
#

it got annoying pretty quick lol

subtle pasture
#

The idea was you'd put in on your belt and walk around, and it'd beep like crazy when you had "walked" to the next in-game objective

forest edge
#

yea wht i had was not that dvanaced

subtle pasture
#

Real-world random battles

forest edge
#

wtf my a key is randomly not working

subtle pasture
#

You sure yours wasn't just a neopet?

forest edge
#

was gochi? hatachi? oir was something like tht

#

was a dino looking thing

subtle pasture
#

Digivices all have a two-pin link connector on the top so you could meet up with other people and battle your digimon head-to-head

forest edge
#

i can't find the one i remember having

#

again, what i had was probably the very first one

#

only remember having to feed it and then pay attention to it

#

it quickly ended up in a drawer lol

#

everything was neon cler plastic back then too..

#

that was all the rage in those days

#

crazy how the xbox 360 controller is still the most sought after controller for pc games

subtle pasture
#

It kinda "just works" with everything

forest edge
#

the newer one's didn't need the dongle to connect tho

subtle pasture
#

PC games usually share a codebase with their Xbox counterpats, so all the gamepad integration is already tuned for either an Xbox 360 or Xbox One gamepad

#

I went with an 8BitDo Ultimate, which is basically a Xbox One gamepad clone

#

Has some extra features, and hall effect thumbsticks, which are impervious to stick drift

forest edge
#

i saw those in vintage stock the other day when i went looking. wasn't sure if they were wireless

#

they were like 130 or something

subtle pasture
#

The Ultimate is wireless. It includes a 2.4 GHz wireless adapter in the charging base, but it also supports bluetooth

forest edge
#

thought about the razer one but mostly because the guts of the joystick can be replaced to deal with future drift issues

subtle pasture
#

Just get a gamepad with hall effect sensors. They literally never wear out and can't drift

forest edge
#

sounds expensive.. wasn't some of the one or x ones that way?

#

the razer one was already like 150

#

it was 60 for a brand new xbox one controller and 30 for a used xbox 360 controller lol

#

everything else went over the 100 mark

subtle pasture
#

None of Microsoft's official gamepads use hall effect. It's not expensive to implement, it's just not common 🤷‍♀️

#

The Dreamcast and Sega Saturn both used hall effect sensors for their thumsticks

#

The only reason I can think of not to use hall effect is because you expect other parts of the controller to fail before a potentiometer-based thumbstick does.

#

But given how the thumbsticks seem to be the very first thing to go on a lot of gamepads, it seems like a no-brainer to use more-resilliant tech

forest edge
#

not bad, good call

subtle pasture
#

I've heard good things about that gamepad. I almost got it instead of the 8BitDo Ultimate

forest edge
#

well in a way the 8bit one is a better buy, atleast through amazon

#

it comes with the charging dock at the same price

subtle pasture
#

It's worth mentioning that, if you're planning on using the gamepad with an Xbox, the KingKong 2 Pro only works wired. The 8BitDo Ultimate works wireless (but requires that you connect the included 2.4 GHz USB dongle to the Xbox)

forest edge
#

nah i'm done with consoles.. still using my xbox360 for pc games but got bad drift going on now

subtle pasture
#

That said, the dongle is inside the charging cradle (can be removed), so if you're already plugging the charging cradle into your xbox, you won't even notice the add-on

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

Well, that's handy. lol

forest edge
#

is a good video to show the diffrences

subtle pasture
#

I'm curious what the alternative input modes on the KingKong do. I've used the 8BitDo Ultimate with my Switch, PC, and Android phone, and it worked fine

#

I'm guessing there's an edge case somewhere that the KingKong might handle better

forest edge
#

the one thing i like about my xbox controller is the fact the battery is replaceable

#

the controller would be unusable at this point for as long as i have had this controller

subtle pasture
#

Yeah, and even Xbox One gamepads (aside from the Ultimate) still have that going for them

#

The reason why is actually kinda funny... Microsoft has an agreement with Duracell

#

They're contractually obligated to offer gamepads with replaceable batteries

I have like 7 original Xboxes

#

Oldest console I played new was the genesis

prisma briar
#

Nice.

#

I bought a couple lots of broken ones on eBay a few years ago and fixed up what I could.

steel crag
#

yeah I mostly bought em at yard sales etc for parts

#

I think I hacked at least half of them for sure

prisma briar
#

All of mine are TSOP'd or chipped

steel crag
#

I did read all the EEPROM's too

#

I made my own EEPROM reader because lazy

#

zener diodes and some 1K resistors IIRC

prisma briar
#

I pop mine open, bridge the write pin on the BIOS, boot splinter cell, move to x-blast OS, and flash evox m8+.

steel crag
#

I just premade the hard drives once I had the hdd lock key

prisma briar
#

tsop mod will boot an unlocked drive

steel crag
#

cuz I got tired of borrowing my buddies splinter cell

steel crag
#

I had a machine specifically to make xbox hdds

#

it was much easier to just build a stack of hdd's then lock em

#

at least for me

prisma briar
#

If not for the time it takes to attach an eeprom reader I'd probably agree

#

I have a ton of old consoles. I think I have 13 hooked up right now

steel crag
#

I have it so I just touch the pins to the header

#

so literally like 2 second hook up

steel crag
#

I think I have my old gameboy too actually

prisma briar
#

I have Genesis/SNES/PS1/N64/Dreamcast/PS2/Xbox/PS3/Xbox 360/Wii U/Xbox One/Switch/Series S/PS5 hooked up, and a couple wiis and a bunch of Xboxes in storage

#

I have a GBC/GBA/PSP/DSi XL/New 3DS XL for handheld

steel crag
#

oh I forgot about the DS

#

is that a Nokia N800 on the right of the second shelf down, right side?

prisma briar
#

No, that's a 'New 3DS XL'

#

(Yea, Nintendo literally put 'New' in a product name)

steel crag
#

lmfao

#

I also have a Halo special edition Xbox

#

😄

#

that's a v1.6 right?

prisma briar
#

Pretty sure I have a 1.4 in mine, that was non-functional when I got it and I swapped the board.

#

I had to tape over the extra post so it didn't short out

steel crag
#

oh word? I thought they only came with 1.6

#

either way I have every rev board in my house LOL

prisma briar

I think it did, but the board that came with mine was dead

steel crag
#

ahhh gotcha

prisma briar
#

And I put a 1.4 in

steel crag

the 2600 was ours but I played on the pong console too

#

I still have our 2600 but I don't think I have any cables left

prisma briar

I had a 2600 as a kid but it was long past it's retail date at that point

forest edge
#

good you kept it. wish I had kept mine

steel crag
#

well I say 'our' but my brothers don't know I still have it muhuhahaha

#

the joys of getting everyones hand me down shit as a little brother.... is you get to keep it

prisma briar
#

My 2600 crapped out on me and I was a kid who had no idea how to repair things

steel crag
#

if we let my brother 'fix' it it definitly wouldn't work

forest edge
prisma briar
#

Mine just quit turning on. I opened it up and looked for anything obvious but I was like 8.

#

Probably was just a bad cap or something

forest edge
#

I don't fully remember what the fate of mine was. nor do i remember what happened to my nes. i only remember the snes cause a fucking ex stole it lol

prisma briar
#

I had an NES as a kid too, sold it along with a bunch of other stuff in my early 20s for rent money.

#

And just never cared to buy one back again

forest edge
#

I had the robot, the gun even powerglove lol

steel crag
#

I had an ex move in "why do you have a rice cooker? it's so uneeded, what a waste of money" who then stole it when she moved out

forest edge

the powerglove ws such shit

prisma briar
#

The robot was a pretty stupid gimmick too

steel crag
forest edge
#

buddy had the track and field thing, i never hd tht

steel crag
#

well I come from a LARGE family, I'm one of 7 kids and I have hundreds of cousins

#

so we had it setup in the big house on the farm and all the kids would compete in track and field at night 😄

we also learned that we could break the entire game by sitting on the edge of the bed when doing long jump and raising your feet up for more than 5 mins

prisma briar
#

The non-Halo green one was an odd find, those weren't released in the US and I tracked it's origin down to Singapore, it was the only country that used ntsc-j and a UK-style plug I could find.

#

But it was shipped to me from Oregon, and worked fine on arrival.

#

Once I swapped it's PSU with a 120v PSU at least

#

For the gem I sanded the paint off of a normal gem and filled the 'XBOX' text with glow in the dark acrylic paint. I have a couple UV LEDs below it that cause the Xbox text to glow.

steel crag
#

man I'd consider stealing that it's so nice

#

I wonder if my buddies CNC machine could... you know what NO

#

lol

prisma briar
#

You can still find the ghost shells but they haven't made them in a long time and stock is running out so they're not $30 anymore

#

They're also getting brittle with age

#

You have to stop screwing it on before any resistance is given level brittle

#

Also the transparent DVD drive cover is only compatible with Thompson drives, which are generally regarded as the worst. I had a decent working one on hand though.

umbral cliff
#

Or at least was back then

prisma briar
#

Xbox was ntsc-j in singapore

#

idk what was standard there but the xbox was ntsc-j there.

umbral cliff
#

That is very weird. Singapore used PAL for broadcast tv

#

If it was Asia using NTSC-J for Xbox then Hong Kong is another country that could've been included there

prisma briar
#

Hong Kong xboxes were pal

#

(I looked all this up when identifying where mine was from)

umbral cliff
#

Now that's just weird. Singapore and Hong Kong and Malaysia are usually part of the same release group

prisma briar
#

Though the Hong Kong ones also had more relaxed region locking

#

Oh, I guess Hong Kong xboxes were NTSC-J too

#

It's hard to find concrete information on this stuff, most of what I can find is forum posts.

#

Can literally find pages saying those regions took NTSC or PAL authoritatively

umbral cliff
#

The Singapore grid is 50hz which is what pal was mainly for, and NTSC for 60hz

prisma briar
#

I can't find anything saying that these are PAL and when I got it it came with a UK-style cable and was coded for NTSC-J in the eeprom

umbral cliff
#

Weird

#

Hmm middle east maybe? @prisma briar

prisma briar
#

THe manual it came with was Singapore/HK/Korea

umbral cliff

Those manuals look like they could be for Japanese/ china/ any English language region

prisma briar

It's korean/chinese/english on them, I think they all had english

glacial knot
prisma briar
#

Most japanese would be able to read the chinese fine though

glacial knot
#

same as most Germans could decipher dutch. You still wouldn't use that manual 😂

prisma briar
#

Not really, it's a formal official character set in Japanese.

glacial knot
#

that's like saying anyone that speaks English should be able to read French due to the same alphabet 😂

prisma briar
#

No, it's not.

#

Each character in Kanji means a word, they're the same across China and Japan.

#

It's literally the furthest you could get from a latin character set

glacial knot
#

ahh, yes https://jisho.org/search/自動販売機 https://www.mdbg.net/chinese/dictionary?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=vending+machine
clearly they are entirely equivalent

The english/french is a bit far (though also slightly fitting, since it's about imported words that remain similar), but if you think it's any better than dutch/German you have no idea what you are talking about

#

written Chinese is mostly decipherable from Japanese knowledge, but trying to just read it as Japanese makes absolutely no sense

prisma briar
#

I don't speak either of them but have been told by multiple Japanese people they can read Chinese just fine.

glacial knot

especially around tech, where Japan mostly uses English (or sometimes German) imported words

prisma briar

prisma briar

Literally all I said was Japanese people can read Chinese writing fine. Which is true.

#

You even agreed to it.

glacial knot
#

being able to read (i.e. intelligible) is far from being same enough to be reasonable on a product that takes itself serious

prisma briar
#

Never disputed it, it's pretty obvious that a Japanese-localized product would be in Hiragana. All I said was they could probably read it too.

glacial knot
#

you claimed that they are literally the same

#

And that chinese would be a valid official writing 😂

prisma briar
#

Then you started whining about it being French vs Dutch which is complete bullshit

glacial knot
#

Dutch and German is even closer 😂

#

And French and English has similar relationships

prisma briar
#

Sorry, I didn't feel like going into the specifics of "They're mostly the same but have drifted apart over a few centuries but are still close enough to be read and understood fine by either population," largely because that's pedantic bullshit nobody cares about.

umbral cliff
#

I am normally good at that

prisma briar
#

The US and UK get different localizations because wording sounds funny between the two, doesn't mean they're not both English. Just varying dialects of it. Everything I've ever heard, including the Japanese classes I've taken, has said that Kanji and traditional Chinese were about on the same level of variance.

You're literally the first person I've ever heard claim that they're wildly divergent -- and everything I can find now indicates that they're actually really damn close and you had no idea what you were talking about when you said they were like French vs English.

What a goofy conversation about Japanese and Chinese languages. Japanese uses a system that includes hiragana, katakana and kanji. Hiragana is phonetic. Katakana can be considered as very roughly an italic form of hiragana, and is used mostly to render foreign words. About 2,000 kanji are used widely and are considered the minimum for general literacy, but 3-10,000 are also used. Borrowed kanji may be used either for common meaning of the symbol or be#cause it’s sound-alike for the Japanese word. This article describes it better than I can: https://www.nippon.com/en/japan-topics/b05607/shared-sounds-kanji’s-patterns-of-pronunciation.html

nippon.com

Sometimes part of a kanji indicates how it may be pronounced. Looking out for these patterns can give a boost to reading skills.

#

A Japanese person who says they can read kanji just fine may be referring to knowing the kanji used in Japanese. It may give clues when faced with a wall of Chinese text, so they might get the gist of it, but “read it just fine” would be an exaggeration.

he National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a final ruling this week that permits automakers to finally add Adaptive Driving Beams (ADB) for vehicles on US roads.

Adaptive headlights, available on many vehicles in Europe, Canada, and Japan, have been prohibited in the US due to rigid and outdated federal regulations. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (standard no. 108) specified requirements for lamps and reflectors dating back to 1967, which standardized binary hi / low beams, which as a result stifled newer headlight technology.

But now, after the passage of President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure bill late last year, NHTSA was directed to amend FMVSS no. 108. The agency was given two years to take action but was able to make the change a year and a half ahead of schedule.```
#
Adaptive Driving Beams are a headlight technology with automated beamforming, controlled by a computer that aims lights in different directions. It can brighten your path directly ahead and dim the lights that shine outward that could blind oncoming drivers. In its final ruling, NHTSA sought to “ensure that ADB systems do not increase glare to other motorists beyond current lower beams,” which was a concern when the agency previously assessed the technology in 2015.```
#
There are also even more advanced ADB systems like Audi’s Digital Matrix headlights in the latest E-tron models, which can create a “carpet” of brighter light ahead, and even widen the beam to another lane in preparation for a lane change.
#

this is pretty old tech, that is now being allowed in the US

#

All the european cars in the US have the system, it is just disabled in software

#

even tesla has had this system since the model s I guess

#

just disabled in software

that explains my system load

adsl2? not even heard of that but yes, we have dial up options.. don't think that will ever not be an option even in cities

Quick google search found a 2023 article from a Finnish website that says the average 5G latency is about 20ms compared to fiber. The 1-2ms stuff is just marketing nonsense

clear ferry

I don't doubt that at all in larger cities where you have a station with line-in-sight. And even at 20 or 30ms or whatever it's unlikely to make any difference for anyone

#

But the 1ms stuff was and still is just dumb

clear ferry
#

It will be 1ms in ideal situations

#

But probably not very much real life

#

It might be on 6g

#

Yeah, sub ms and 100Gbit for 6g

#

Will probably need very dense tower population

orchid rose
#

I really wonder what do we need these for though

clear ferry
#

As a fiber replacement

#

For inner city probably

#

And the IoT world

#

Each device will have an ipv6 address and roam between all points

#

Say... 40 sensors on a bus

#

Talking directly to the internet

orchid rose
#

5G came with such ridicilous hype already. It was supposed to revolutionize healthcare and self-driving cars. None of it obviously happened and currently most people will do fine on a 100Mbps connection with decently stable (doesn't have to be fast, just stable) response times

#

IoT is a meme for most people and will remain that way for a while I think. We're a bit special here

clear ferry
#

More devices, more bandwidth, more real time data instead of time shifted data

#

IoT is already big, lots of stores have hundreds of sensors in each store

#

You just don't know

#

Edge computing, optimizing and restocking

orchid rose

I mean most of my friends are boomers as well so maybe the youth is more into IoT than I've seen irl. But I really doubt it. I'm still the only one in any of my gaming communities that talk about this stuff and those consist mostly of younger guys

#

Text-based data already takes no bandwidth. It's just video really that you need it for and we're reaching a place where there's not that much we can improve

clear ferry
#

You say that, but 40 devices per m2 streaming sensor data realtime adds up

#

On top of all the consumers of data walking around watching 4k videos on their phones

#

And say if 100 Teslas drive past, that is a lot of sensor data being pushed through

#

And updates pulled down

#

Only 3000 Teslas sold per month in Norway

#

Quite a bit of data

orchid rose
#

Right, but that's not consumer level networks and for the infrastructure itself you would still use fiber because it's cheaper and easier

#

What do the customers need a 10GB 7G connection for?

clear ferry
#

And smart trains, and smart buses

#

The consumers don't, but the infrastructure does

orchid rose

#

Last i checked

#

With 3000 new Teslas per month in Norway, plus all other EVs

2-5TB per Tesla per week of data generated without self driving

@forest edge I don't know if got or saw the email from the LitterRobot guys, but they claim that the latest firmware should solve a bunch of the very common issues that I saw early on. For what it's worth, both my 3 and 4 have been working flawlessly for ~6 months now, and only the 4 has been receiving firmware updates. I switched to their litter, which is a little heavier, and I think that helped. This is what they said about the new firmware for the 4:

Fewer Interrupted Cycles

We’ve improved Litter-Robot 4’s ability to accurately detect what is and isn’t your cat, all while keeping safety a top priority. Now it can better account for natural dust and hair, which had previously made Litter-Robot vulnerable to interrupting cycles.

‘Always Go Home’ Mode

Litter-Robot 4 now has improved functionality so that it always returns to home position so that you never have to worry about your cat being without a clean bed of litter.

#

that last bit was my constant complaint - it would get stuck upside down and leave nowhere for my cats to go

#

They're also releasing the "Smart Scale" feature to track pets, but that's become less interesting to me now that my two cats have decided to use separate LRs. They don't share at all from what I can tell

Cats!

subtle pasture
#

It helps that one of my cats is significantly larger than the other, so it's easy to tell them apart by weight range 😛

static schooner
#

same with mine - ~9.5 & 16.5

solar zealot
#

we need pictures of those cats

#

I call this one Cat on Catfood Box:

subtle pasture
#

Here's Gandalf being a majestic chonker

solar zealot
#

i would steal those cats

subtle pasture
#

Gandalf the gray, even. lol

static schooner
solar zealot
#

ah yes the typical dll

subtle pasture
#

Oof, last time I saw that it was part of a DRM scheme...

solar zealot
#

all i wanted was to create an archive

#

this seems to be some usb related driver stuff

forest edge
forest edge
subtle pasture
#

My cats aren't similar weight, so the logic is literally "Weight between 5 and 11 lbs is Sphinx. Weight greater than 11 lbs is Gandalf"

#

Making 5 the minimum was to weed out false positives

forest edge
#

oh nm it's gandalf and gandalf average. thought that was 4 cats lol

subtle pasture
#

Ah, yeah, I also added a moving average to deal with measurement noise/variance

forest edge
#

i'm trying to do the same but with 4 cats and 2 LR's.. two of my cats clock in the exact same time from time so challenging

subtle pasture
#

I think this is where LitterRobot's camera is supposed to come in

forest edge
#

no, that won't be used in that manor

#

according to the email

subtle pasture
#

Then what's the camera even for? lol

forest edge
#

all that will be is a snap shot of whatever cat that is in unit

subtle pasture
#

And it won't use AI to recognize the cat in the photo?

forest edge
#

no

subtle pasture
#

Lame

forest edge
#

infact they sell the camera mount, not a camera that goes in it

static schooner
#

They literally call the feature SmartScale

subtle pasture
#

There's even a cutout in the dome for the cable to pass through

forest edge
subtle pasture
#

I don't really see the point of the camera, then...

forest edge
#

diagnostic reasons? i dunno

subtle pasture
#

Like, at least use it to detect stuck clumps so it can attempt a second cycle...

#

Sounds like I should just throw an ESP32CAM on it and have it run tensorflow myself

#

I can get cat and clump detection working no problem

forest edge
#

I don't think object detection is that good. if you look at the pictures of other cameras that has been mounted to thier camera mount the image isn't all that well and i don't mean quality.. just the angle and everything

#

being able to tell apart one cat from another would be no simple task

#

not like dog from cat

subtle pasture
#

The nice thing about highly constrained scenarios is it's easier to optimize for them

#

The camera is only ever going to look at the inside of the litterbox, and only ever see 1 to 4 cats. That's a much easier thing to train for than "you might have to detect any kind of object at any given momen"

my dream is to own a litter robot when I grow up

forest edge
umbral cliff

I'm debating an LR for real tho, it's actually cheaper to buy one than it is to build an outdoor cattery for them

#

hell it's cheaper to buy two of em actually

forest edge
#

wut, how is that possible

#

stupid units were like 750 a pop

subtle pasture

My cats actually prefer the LitterRobot. The moment they realized it was always clean, they were hooked.

steel crag
subtle pasture
#

I kept the old litterbox around for a little while, but they'd literally only use it once before going "meh, too dirty" and hopping into the LitterRobot. lol

steel crag
forest edge
subtle pasture
#

So far so good on my LR4, aside from one instance of it faulting upside down

#

Cat dander on the motion/proximity sensor freaked it out

steel crag
steel crag
#

that's just the wire, not the wood I need, nor the price of my labor

subtle pasture
#

No, the cat did their business and it tried to cycle, but stopped midway through

umbral cliff
#

I still think it would end up like a cat washing machine
Spinning them around and around

The LitterRobot stops immediately if there's any kind of motion detection, or if the motion sensor can't detect anything

cat wire

forest edge
#

well one 780 purchase is cheaper than two LR units

static schooner
forest edge
#

what kind of litter was it?

#

i use tidy and not had any issues

static schooner
#

I was using Tidy Cats in the plastic container

forest edge
#

weird

static schooner
#

it was pretty dusty, so I was on the lookout for a new type

forest edge
#

you weren't using that lightweight stuff were you?

static schooner
#

I tried that for a while and it sucked

#

cats tracked it literally everywhere

static schooner
#

I liked that it was lightweight, but it was not good

subtle pasture
#

This it what I'm using. Seems to work fine

forest edge
#

yea that lightweight stuff shouldn't even exsist. i can't imagine it even being healthy for cats

subtle pasture
#

Activated Charcole is a real good thing to have for litter that gets recycled as often as this does

forest edge
#

I just use the traditional clumping stuff, sometimes has light blue top, red top but most often the black colored top on the 35 pound plastic pal

#

workout carrying multiple of those pals in the house.. thankfully the LR's cut the amount of trips i have to do that lol

steel crag
#

I even forget what brand litter I buy, but also in the 35lb pail

static schooner
#

you can get it delivered

steel crag
static schooner
#

oh well. they have special cardboard delivery boxes for it

forest edge
#

oof $30 for 20lbs

steel crag
#

I mean I could get it delivered to my freight forwarder in Miami, and pay an arm to get it here, then a leg to pay customs

forest edge
#

use to be able to get the 35lb pals for like 12 bucks on sale.. those days are long gone 😦

steel crag
#

it's like $55 for a 35lb pail here

forest edge
#

it's 19.68 for the 35lbs on chewy

steel crag
#

that sounds about right

#

whatever it costs you in the states, double it at least and that's the cheapest I can prolly get it

#

usually the rule is 2x-3x base cost

forest edge
#

by the time you add in plane costs shit should be higher on island lol

steel crag
#

plane costs? only drug dealers can afford to ship by air

#

I'd have to wait on the boat

forest edge
#

ship by turtle back?

steel crag
#

which is around 1week to get things

#

anything I order takes like 2 weeks before it's in my hands

forest edge
#

thats really not that bad

iron granite
forest edge
#

considering not all that long ago, everything would take 1-2 weeks for me to get as well lol

steel crag
iron granite
#

Ah... a common reading error. It says "living for working stuff"

steel crag
#

that's not true, else my Air conditioner would work too

iron granite
#

Is it living?

steel crag
#

I'm more like working for semi-broken stuff

forest edge
#

aren't air conditioners forbidden in the bahamas?

steel crag
#

hahahahahahaha

#

if there was anything forbidden here, it wouldn't be that

#

you want a nationwide riot?

#

could you imagine the tourists as well ?

forest edge
#

thats kind of sad if the natives need air con

#

watched a documentary on the sad case of native hawaiians and they don't need it. Course with the whole homeless aspect there it's not like they have much of a choice but even many of the homes show no signs of having air con

steel crag
#

but I would like to sleep the whole night and not wake up and have to take a shower to dry off

steel crag
forest edge
#

all of them.. it's what the documentary was about

#

about the conditions of the native hawaiians since tourists have moved in

#

many are homeless and sleep in tents.. it's depressing. like more so then the shit that happens like in california etc

#

like we screwed them just like we screwed the indians cept the indians got reservations and native hawaiians got a low paying no benifit job and thier land stolen

steel crag
#

well the native Bahamians mostly all got wiped out when Columbus arrived, so there's very very few of us even left

tidal bronze
forest edge

Golden? you are confused.

tidal bronze

Have you ever seen a Californian or a New Yorker talk about another state or a country?

tidal bronze
#

I have to becuse, you gotta give shit where shit is deserved. But we usually don't even think about other territories. It really doesn't matter.

forest edge

new yorker was a very bad example to bring up lol

tidal bronze

That was a hard question, I mean really!? Have a you see a social post like that?

#

Californian talking about Massachusetts?

forest edge
tidal bronze

Not even bashing, just thinking about it?

forest edge

hard to not think about another state when thier literal shit spills into the open media

wait, your an ostrich

tidal bronze

Oh ok. 🤣

your head is too far buried to even know what news is lol

tidal bronze

It's been like 15 years since I watched or read news.
