#

Yea, try staying away from any foods that smell like ammonia for a few days.

prisma briar
#

I went to a Comcast location to pick up a modem and they deactivated my current modem right when they handed me the new one at the store. Dumbasses.

#

I get home and everyone's like, "Uh, internet's out."

#

Wasn't even planning to hook it up for another like 4 hours.

clear ferry
#

you guys and your locked modems

steel crag
#

@clear ferry take your ONT to someone elses house, see if it works

clear ferry
#

Actually I can replace the ONT with an SFP and plug it directly into my switch

#

just haven't gotten around to ordering one yet

glacial knot
clear ferry
#

yeah I have never had to "activate" a modem when I had one, but that is well over a decade ago since I had DSL for a few years

#

plug old out, plug new one in, it autoprovisions

#

docsis was even more stupid, it was just point to point most of the time ๐Ÿ˜„

#

with client isolation

glacial knot
#

yea, they come pre-configured. But there's alsways the option to configure it^^

clear ferry
#

eventually, though, we didn't have client isolation in 1998

#

that was fun

#

with 300 users in my hometown

#

connected to the same docsis central as me

static schooner
#

Speaking of your hometown, I heard the US is setting up a 'presence' in the Arctic circle north of Oslo. Be sure to wave!

clear ferry
#

well

#

they have been docked in oslo for days

#

they are moving slowly north

#

apparently the "politcal" line to cross is passing my hometown

#

according to strategists

#

arctic circle is only 66 degrees north though

#

my hometown is 69

static schooner
#

Beware of importing capitalism...

glacial knot
#

They already export capitalism

static schooner
#

It starts when they build a Walmart

glacial knot
#

looks at their state fund

#

And then walmart gets out-capitalismed like it did in Germany

clear ferry
#

I think norway owns 12% of the US national debt or something

#

need to look it up

static schooner
#

It's a shame we aren't going to default on it

clear ferry
#

yes

#

I was hoping for that

static schooner
#

Seems like the problem would be less dire if we just stiffed Norway

clear ferry
#

china apparently holds 10% of the us debt

static schooner
#

Or built a Walmart for you and called it good

clear ferry
#

Just say you saw some WMD in the norwegian kings house

glacial knot
#

you mean found oil in Norway

#

oh wait

static schooner
#

Any excuse will do

clear ferry
#

we just found some new oilfields

#

so we are set for more years

#

Norway owns 1.5% of all stocks in the world fun fact, through the oil fund

lofty orchid
#

I am making progress with my food pantry home assistant project and I'm feeling pretty good about it. 2 units down with just the storage unit left to do. I'm gathering evidence that we need to upgrade our air conditioners cuz it's not even hot yet and it's running a lot in unit 8 cuz all our fridges/freezers are like space heaters and there are 6 of them in unit 8. I added a new device that uses LEDs to signal when it is appropriate to leave the back door open which is based on weather/thermostat set point temperature difference.

clear ferry

So just like regular docsis then

#

Gotcha

static schooner
#

let's see you try to run through rain, dodging raindrops

steel crag
#

I do not run in the rain, for I may slip and fall. I walk and attain the same soaking with confidence.

hollow glacier
lofty orchid
#

Not yet, I've been documenting progress along the way. There are a few more things I want to get done first.

hollow glacier
#

i would suggest a bigger led strip and maybe even a simple 3d printed "sign" with simple easy to understand verbage like "Open/Close Back door" where only one lights up

lofty orchid
#

My next step is getting an exhaust fan installed in the small room that contains 5 commercial fridges/freezers. I'm going to hit up some local HVAC companies and see if I can one help me figure out appropriate CFM for an exhaust fan and maybe even check out our old air conditioners.

hollow glacier
#

cool

#

a lot of smart fan controllers cant handle >3amps or so due to inrush current on bigger ones so be careful if you plan to automate that

lofty orchid
#

Fortunately one of the volunteers is married to an electrician so I can just buy a zigbee wall switch and have him put it in.

hollow glacier
#

yeah that wont necessarily work

#

cuz of what i just said lol

#

well it'll work until the relay contacts solder themselves together or it catches fire

lofty orchid
#

Idk what Im gonna end up with, it could just be a glorified bathroom fan

#

same end result just with a smart switch instead of a smart plug

#

glorified bathroom fan / ceiling fan is exactly what i was talking about - as long as you're <3amp or w/e the switch is rated for you should be okay

lofty orchid
glacial knot
#

if they are for actually switching mains. And not some special "only for LED lamps" dimmer stuff

hollow glacier
#

re-read what i said above

#

this is about inrush current not about overall amps

glacial knot
#

yes? if your inrush is lower than the rated current for the switch, inrush doesn't matter much

hollow glacier
#

the switches designed for lights arent meant to handle multiple amps like that

#

well it does to manufacturers

#

and spec sheets

#
glacial knot
#

Oh wow, where do you find crap like that? First hit on amazon for me is sonoff which is good up to 2200W

hollow glacier
#

crap?

glacial knot
#

3A is nothing on mains

steel crag
#

but that is a lot for smart

hollow glacier
#

the fact that you're comparing chinese hardware (sonoff) to zooz and inovelli and calling it crap tells me you dont know what you're talking about

#

so i'm just gonna bow out lol

steel crag
#

sonoff touches rated at like 1.3A

#

basics are 10A I think

lofty orchid
forest edge
#

isn't Zooz a chinese brand?

hollow glacier
#

a 15amp light switch is common - a 3amp capable fan switch is common - they are not the same switch

forest edge
#

confused what this conversation is about

lofty orchid
#

Me trying to figure out what I gotta do lol

forest edge
#

for what?

lofty orchid
#

I guess making sure I can control a fan in a non burny fashion

#

It's my 4th ha and I still feel like I have only scratched the surface

hollow glacier
#

well i just want to make sure you're helping them without potential failure with hardware

#

i like your idea i just want you to make sure you understand the limitations of smart switch + fan

lofty orchid
#

That's why I'm gonna try and see if an HVAC company will donate their time and then with the electrician make sure everything is ok. Im just the guy that controls stuff

hollow glacier
#

sparky's know very little about smart home hardware

#

they know what the book says to keep from burning things down and that's it (it's a big book)

lofty orchid
#

The Shelly 1pm looks appropriate or am I missing something?

forest edge
#

why can't a smart switch work?

#

I use a smart plug that starts a window ac unit just fine, pretty sure the switch will be just fine

#

the shelly will work too as long as what your trying to power dosen't pull over the 10a

#

you just trying to automate an exhaust fan? like a bathroom size one or something more industrial?

lofty orchid
#

Not sure yet, it might be end up being a bathroom fan if it can do the job

forest edge
#

when in doubt you can always use a dry contact relay in conjunction with like a shelly or even a smart switch and that way as long as the dry relay was rated for what you are powering it will be irrelevant what you use to trigger it

hollow glacier
forest edge
#

I use a 15a tp link smart plug to turn on and off a 15a window ac unit and been doing that for the past 2 years with no issues lol

lofty orchid
#

the building is kept around 72 and this is the data from the thermocouple amplifier boards internal temp sensors on top of the freezers. The dip is with the external doors open. I will be able to see an improvement if the fan works.

hollow glacier
#

problem is with hvac you cant just remove hot air, although that is certainly necessary, you need to introduce cooler air at the same time

#

but if you find an hvac guy with a heart they should help you for free

lofty orchid
#

I hope so lol

forest edge
#

you know if this is something you only want to run during like the "hottest" part of the day a dumb smart socket will work. hell even those industrial timer switches that pretty affordable

lofty orchid
#

I'm gonna run it roughly when the outside temperature is over 50f. If it's cold its extra heat

forest edge
#

strap a big block of aluminum onto it lol

lofty orchid
#

I made a "system is working" indicator. Our logo is a piggy bank so I bought a white plastic piggy bank on Amazon and stuffed it with LEDs, using wled I can control it so it's on when people are there, if volunteers see it off they are supposed to let me know.

glacial knot
#

you can use notify and send yourself a message as well

lofty orchid
#

Same automation turns on piggy, I only really expect it to be off if we are down down

I've never seen a residential connection that expensive

prisma briar

I think I get TV with my internet but I'd have to pay for a cable box rental I don't want

steel crag
#

that's why I bought mine

#

but they still make you pay insurance on them

crude shoal
#

Not sure if this is a HA thing more of a javascript thing. Does anyone know what's wrong with this? I'm getting 401 unauthorized. I used the real auth token.....

function loadWebhook() {
const myHeaders = new Headers();
myHeaders.append('Content-Type', 'application/json');
myHeaders.append('Authorization', 'specialAuthKeyxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx');

fetch('http://home-assistant:8123/api/services/automation/trigger', {
  method: 'POST',
  body: '{"entity_id": "automation.my_automation"}',
  headers: myHeaders,})
}
loadWebhook();
prisma briar
#

You need to have 'BEARER' before the key I think. Sec, lemme check my code

dusky plank
#

That special auth key looks suspiciously wrong

#

Yes, you need a bearer token

prisma briar
#

Go to the Home Assistant dashboard, click on your name on the bottom left, scroll to the bottom, create a 'Long-Lived Access Token'.

#

It'll spit out a random key like eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJpc3MiOiIyN2EzMDhkNzczMzE0Yzk2ODE1OGM0OWU5ZDc1ZDYzMSIsImlhdCI6MTY4NTY3OTAzNiwiZXhwIjoyMDAxMDM5MDM2fQ.c5tU3nLeZXfN84PF70cEKbQF24R8zu_fgJ6-BnchmFA . You want to have the header set as ('Authorization', 'Bearer eyJhb...') as per https://developers.home-assistant.io/docs/api/rest/

Home Assistant provides a RESTful API on the same port as the web frontend (default port is port 8123).

crude shoal

It works. Thanks. I wanted to run an automation when a specific dashboard view gets loaded. Now I can do it from this javascript. I'll add the part to check the current url using window.location.href hopefully will work.

tidal bronze
#

Depends on the place, if Michelin, 100%! experience, presentation, conversation all that matters. And No, I would not expect that from the Mexican grandma selling tamales from a cooler at the street corner. But I enjoy and appreciate both equally.

orchid rose
#

It sounds like you have different criteria for both which is what I find interesting. Why does fine dining need to be seen differently from what those "grandma tamales" offer?

tidal bronze
#

I think, food is like everything else, there is a learning curve to it. I doubt everyone can enjoy everything the same way. Fine dining seen differently? Not seen differently, enjoyed differently. Would you expect same level of ride comfort from a Toyota Vs a Range rover?

orchid rose
#

Sure, I agree with that. It's the presentation part that I don't get. You posted a couple of pics and none of those resonate with me in any way artistically so why should I pay extra for it when I can get the same taste experience from that "grandma tamales". If it was somehow aesthetically pleasing on top of tasting amazing, then I'm 100% for that but from my limited experience, if anything, it seems to be the opposite

tidal bronze
#

Most of the time pictures won't do justice to the creativity when it comes to taste. Is every creation taste amazing, look amazing? Nopes! Is every street taco end up not being dry? Nopes.
It's not good judge anything without actually trying, that's all I gotta say about anything.

orchid rose
#

But you just said experience, presentation, conversation is all that matters...

tidal bronze
#

I think you misunderstood me everything has to come together for a 1 to 3 star experience.

#

Even if the food tastes amazing and experience is shit, it's shit.

#

Have you dined at a Michelin 3 star restaurant?

Rather than define a bunch of separate REST calls, you can make one request and define several sensors from the response

#

Raccoon is satisfied, now back off topic

forest edge
#

whats the benefit using that over say MQTT?

#

aside from not needing the broker etc

static schooner
#

they're completely unrelated

forest edge
#

in terms of sending data

static schooner
#

the 'benefit" is that one uses a REST endpoint and the other uses an MQTT broker

forest edge
#

is that itself a benefit?

static schooner
#

they're really not related. completely different ways to communicate with a server or device

#

no

forest edge
#

I know, but you can use rest the same way as mqtt in the regards of updating sensors etc from two end points that support both and was curious if there was any beneit of one over another

#

I never used HA to send rest calls outside like sending stuff that only supported rest api

#

so i didn't know

static schooner
#

While MQTT defines a standardized way to publish and subscribe to topics to allow devices to communicate, the topic names and payload format still need to be understood by both devices, so it's similar to REST in that way.

#

in theory, you could put an MQTT broker somewhere that both devices can make outbound connections to, but the devices can't directly communicate with each other

#

or a device can publish once to the MQTT broker and the broker can service many calls from many clients without putting that load on the original device

well aside from the resources of the broker itself, was curious if there was any kind of efficiency benefit or some thing

REST is, by definition, a polling interface. MQTT allows clients to maintain a connection and be notified when there are changes

forest edge
#

i didn't know mqtt was a maintained connection. my whole setup between my barn and home and another house is my first experince with mqtt and i've only ever used rest just to deal with devices that supoort that so was curious

#

derp i did know mqtt was a maintained connection thats it, i just woke up like 15 mins ago i need my caffeine be back

umbral cliff

Lol your rent is no more than 2000$ a month

umbral cliff
#

Cheap for the area

agile jewel
#

Still. You have 100k a year left for yourself

#

That's like mind blowing

umbral cliff

Minus tax
Minus bills
Minus food

agile jewel

Cook at home

umbral cliff
#

Food is still not cheap

agile jewel
#

With 130k you live worry free live with restaurant food every day

umbral cliff
#

I think you're trying to use the cost of goods and services from your country
Vs what other places are

agile jewel
#

The costs are not in the same proportion to the wage

umbral cliff
agile jewel
#

Your costs might be 60-100% depending on what it is (like rent etc - electricity is way cheaper in the US) but you still make 4-6x the wage

#

So your rent is 50% more expensive, food is well... Same price. Except veggies, eggs, those are like 2-3 times fore expensive for yall

#

But you still have 4x the wage

#

With less than double the expenses

#

The prices of housings went up 300% in the last 10 years

#

It's crazy

#

And wages? In the last 10 years? Maybe 20% ?

umbral cliff
#

I don't get why you're so surprised that wages are higher overseas, hell even between Australia and New Zealand, Australia is better paid on average iirc

#

And those are comparable areas

agile jewel
#

Really? Why so many people trying to get visas to NZ?

umbral cliff
#

I don't know

I just know for the last few decades more NZers have moved to Australia than Australians to NZ (and there's no visa needed for either way there)

agile jewel

I've got a friend who has skin rash when on the sun

His invalidity pays more than my wage xD

In Australia

Yet the gov pays

It's also incredibly hard to get. So if he can live off of it, then well done him

Now i got another 300$ phone for about 2 years

umbral cliff
agile jewel
#

I think he also gets extra money from gov for housing

#

I can ask

#

But basically, if he doesn't go out to the sun, he has no health issues. He just stays home and plays games all day long

#

Which isn't something I'd want to do. I'm glad i can go out on the sun

#

But like...

#

Not working a single day in his entire life and getting free money

#

More than what is considered a good pay in my area... I'm kinda jealous

umbral cliff
#

It's all relative

agile jewel

Below poverty?

#

How can someone below poverty afford to buy a flagship phone every day

#

Buy a new gaming laptop every 2 years

umbral cliff

Every day???

That's impressive

For reference my salary (a grad) is just over double (it's around 4000 a month). Even splitting rent with my partner it's still tight
Leaves around $2000 for bills, groceries, etc
And it's still just okay, anything less I would struggle

But we're also not super frugal either because I believe in being comfortable as well

Then we moved over to Linux and i was speed ๐Ÿš„๐Ÿš…

So connecting to windows AD was fine. But creating a new user on the server itself... Finding that tool in the hill full of functions was a pain.

And all the BS new windows UI which is completely useless and you need to find the legacy windows 7 panels to get the job done ๐Ÿ˜’

  • setting up a tailscale subnet in another country
  • buying a UPS and figuring out a way to make it work with NUT via blazer_usb
  • setting up a new Z2M server on a Pi abroad, adding some smoke detectors etc. and figuring out a way to connect my local HA to it while already having a MQTT integration for my local Z2M. (heard there's something called MQTT bridging)
